HANG ON!—The Holidays are fast approaching. Hell, Thanksgiving is next Thursday. And a new Panhead project just landed in the shop. We are ready for a speed run with the Salt Torpedo, but Micah is or was trying to escape Los Angeles and California. He looked in Prescott, Arizona, but didn’t find what he needed. He’s a member of the Uglies and has Carlos and Emma in Auburn, so he went to check it out. He’s currently in escrow. That may delay our trip to El Mirage. Tomorrow, we will cover another Cruz Tool kit and how we used it with a Bandit’s Dayroll. We have more road tests of CVO models and I’m working on another Sam’s Picks of the Week. Hang On! Proposed California Fee Increases Threatens Motorcycle Industry

September 17, 2020 For Immediate Release “Proposed California Fee Increases Threatens Motorcycle Industry” Empowered by changes to state law, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has begun the process of increasing certification fees for original equipment manufacturers and aftermarket manufacturers. The CARB certification is required to sell motorcycles and parts in the state of California and has ripple effects throughout the nation. The stated goal of the increases is to help offset the cost to California for enforcement and operations of its clean air policies. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is concerned that grossly inflated certification fees will further hamper the aftermarket parts industry’s ability to remain viable. In these trying economic times, increasing fees on the manufacturing industry will no doubt have wide ranging effects. MRF President Kirk “Hardtail” Willard stated, “Putting additional financial strain on aftermarket parts manufacturers will without question impact the average consumer. Motorcycle shops, dealers, manufacturers and distributors are all key components of the motorcycle ecosystem. Anything that impacts the motorcycle industry eventually impacts the motorcycle consumer. The state of California should not destroy the motorcycle industry in an attempt to balance its budget.”

I know the whole world is trying to grapple with this Covid mess, while I hide out in the Badlands surrounded by peace and nirvana, deer and pine trees. We are still two weeks from the rally, but tourist and bikers are everywhere. This morning five of our bikes are being delivered to the Bikernet Covid Hide-Out in the Badlands by Haul Bikes. I’ve got the shop set up and ready for minor repairs and already have a brazing project on the bench, maybe two. Every day is exciting when it involves motorcycles. My grandson is trying to coerce a couple of buddies to ride from LA to Sturgis to escape the madness and mayhem. It’s interesting. When we need fresh air, fresh outlooks, or new adventures, just mount up and ride. Let’s hit the news. I joke about the adage from the India-based movie “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” Great flick: Everything will be all right in the end. If it’s not all right, it’s not the end. Think about that anytime you’re in a jam. Think about it, when strange shit is happening in your hood, in the country or in the industry. Harley seems to be struggling, but I look at it as a transition. And everything will be cool, when they come out of it. I’ve spoken to shop owners all over the country about the times. Here’s a good one. “We had a slow week when the Covid hit,” said Randy Aron of Cycle Visions in San Diego. “Ever since then we’ve been cooking.” So, keep smiling, riding free and rockin’ the world. It’s all going to be so interesting as the country comes to grips with what’s going on in the streets. Do you want law and order or pandemonium? I need to start working on new fender mounts for the Salt Torpedo. Oh, and I heard that the Sturgis Rally powers are meeting on the 15th to make the final decision on the rally. I road tested the funky Panhead last weekend, and I’m almost finished re-editing my first book for reprint. It’s coming out again soon. So, there you have it.
