The State of The Hurricane Address

 
We survived our first hurricane. The damn thing lasted nine hours! It just hovered and stalled over the region for nine hours. Floridian’s have said there were 200 mph “gusts.” 

Debbie and I and the Maltese have been living in an apartment complex waiting for our new home to be ready. The complex was built three years ago to latest hurricane standards. We were not in a mandatory evacuation zone, so we stuck around.
 

WOW! Our utilities were out for four days. There was a temporary fuel shortage since many stations’ canopies sailed away, there was no power for several days and some areas weren’t accessible for fuel delivery because of flooding and debris.
 

I have a buddy who sold Porsche cars to the “who’s who” down here for thirty years. Before ‘Ian hit around 4:00 p.m., as a precaution, he moved his twenty year old Corrolla (typical car sales pro transportation) across the street to his neighbor’s driveway on higher ground.

The eye of the storm passed at 11:00 pm, things were calm, so he thought he’d move his car back to his driveway. Equipped with a big flashlight and dressed in a rain slicker and thigh waders, he ventured outside for the first time to find his street under several feet of water.
 

Shining the light across the street he saw his car, but then his light caught a seven foot python gliding through the water in his path. As he entered the street in thigh high water, he shined his flashlight up and down the street when about twenty yards away, he saw what we Floridian’s know well.

Those two hollow yellow eyes a few inches apart attached to a partly submerged long snout reflecting the light which belonged to an eight foot ‘gator.
 

My pal said he hurriedly crossed the street as stealthily as possible. When he reached his car, he opened the door not realizing there was water up to the dashboard. Once the water drained, he tried to start the car and in his words, the motor turned over but it sounded like a motorboat, “glub, glub, glub…”

Then, it died.

He shut the car door, and quietly sloshed back across the street with his flashlight’s beam leading the way. At his front door he removed his rain gear and entered his home. As he sat down on his living room couch to tell his anxious wife the tale of what had just happened, the eye of the storm passed and the high wind and torrential rain resumed.
 

Next thing their living room wall exploded as storm surge from Charlotte Harbor a couple miles away came down their street.

They’re slugging it out with their insurance company and FEMA since their home needs extensive repairs, including mold remediation.

This is only one story. There are thousands.
 

But hey, we have the best Governor and we’re impressed with how quickly ‘Humpty’s restoration is being addressed.
 
 
 
There’s also been wonderful disaster relief response from well funded Christian organizations such as “Just the Crumbs” out of Mississippi and “God’s Pit Crew” out of Danville VA. Five weeks later they’re still turning out thousands of meals from huge trailer commercial kitchens manned by local volunteers and delivering them to stricken communities.

Back to us. Debbie sold the massive motor-coach on the first phone call back in April and the bike and car trailer went bye-bye a month later. Perfect timing considering the price of fuel and RV part supply chain problems.

I don’t miss the maintenance but we miss traveling this way. Debbie is urging me to get a B+ van so we can resume summer/fall travels. They’re more nimble and the Mercedes powertrain has plenty of torque and fuel economy is pretty good, so we’ll see.

Maybe we’ll catch you guys next summer…unless there’s no diesel fuel… LORD!
 

Our new community a few miles east was not badly affected by the storm and we’re hoping to move in to our new home on a lake this spring.

You and Allison, Debbie and I, couldn’t be in better States at this time in our nation’s history. Healthcare in Florida is terrific. I whip out my Medicare card at doctors offices and it is like the American Express Black card. Ha!

Triumph Announce New Street Triple Lineup For 2023

Limited Edition Street Triple Moto2 Edition Headlines The Show

Triumph has announced a shakeup to its ever-popular Street Triple range today, introducing not one, but three evolutions to the family, creating what it says is “the most powerful Street Triple range ever.” Building off the success it has forged by being the sole engine supplier for the Moto2 racing category, Triumph now introduces the Street Triple R, Street Triple RS, and the Street Triple 765 Moto2 Edition – the latter of which will be relegated to just 765 units worldwide.

Unlike Honda, whose CBR600RR engine was the basis of the Moto2 category during its birth, Triumph has used the racing category to advance the 765cc three-cylinder engine shared between the race bikes and production bikes. The latest Street Triple range is the beneficiary of those advancements.

All three models will get the updated 765cc Triple, which features new pistons, connecting rods, and wrist pins (aka gudgeon pins if you’re British) on the bottom end. The combustion chambers are revised for increased cylinder pressure limits, since the compression ratio has now gone up 4.7%, from 12.65:1 to 13.25:1. New valves and higher lift camshafts round out the top end changes. The R, which is now the base model, peaks at a claimed 118 hp at 11,500 rpm, while the RS and Moto2 top out at a claimed 128 hp at 12,000 rpm. Peak torque is 59 lb-ft at 9,500 rpm, with a notable increase starting at 7,500 rpm compared to the previous model.

Triumph says all six internal gear ratios, as well as the final drive ratio, have been changed compared to the outgoing model for shorter overall gearing. What you should feel from the saddle is faster acceleration (likely at the expense of top speed) in every gear, aided by an up-and-down quickshifter on all three models.

From a tech standpoint, a Continental IMU is fitted to all three models, allowing for optimized cornering ABS and a more refined traction control system (which can also be turned off). As part of the update, the riding modes (four on the R, five on the RS and Moto2) have been refined as well with what Triumph calls, “more dynamic throttle maps.” As part of these new maps, the ABS thresholds are tailored to each mode, giving the rider more or less sensitivity depending on the mode. For the RS and Moto2, the Track riding mode is equipped with a minimally invasive ABS setting.

Visually, the Street Triple range gets a new look that’s sharper and more aggressive, but still very familiar to the original Street Triple from 2007. The new 3.96-gallon fuel tank is smaller than the previous 4.6-gallon tank, but has integrated side panels with an angular design that integrates with the radiator cowls. This flow is continued with the headlight surround that also incorporates the air intake. There’s also a new color-matched bellypan for RS models (available as an option on the R).

At the back, the upswept design gives the Street Triples a nose-down, aggressive attitude which complements well with the new, freer-flowing exhaust, which itself is redesigned.

All three models have a 6,000-mile (10,000 km) service interval, two years unlimited mileage warranty, and two years of Roadside Assistance. For the US and Canada, bikes will be available starting in Spring 2023, making these technically model year 2024 motorcycles. Semantics, we know, but a point worth mentioning.

TANKS FOREVER, FOREVER TANKS

This mess started with a ride to a tribute concert in Hollywood, one of the rare times the whole staff of ER rode together. A brother, Lee Selwin, was run down on the streets near Sunset Boulevard, and we rode to the rock concert at the Palace Theater. Turned into a nostalgic night club, I stepped back stage where I met Markus Cuff who photographed the event.

With the encouragement of artist, Robert Kalafut, I started to work with Markus on tech articles and ultimately bike features. Hell, I’m still working with Markus who also became one of our main tattoo photographers.

Markus was forced into retirement over medical issues and issues with the magazine trade. He can’t cover tech articles and bike feature photography, but I continue to dive into his vast archives in search of motorcycle gems.

Since he has a library of 35 years of related photography we dug into his shots of antique and custom motorcycle tanks. We started to kick around a story line, which led us to the design and engineering team at Harley-Davidson, specifically Brad Richards and Jeremy Nesthus. Brad is the Vice President of Design and Creative Director of Motorcycles at Harley-Davidson Motor Company. 
 

Jeremy is the System Groups Manager for Fuel and Styled Systems at Harley-Davidson Motor Company. He has been with H-D for 20 years working in Parts & Accessories, Systems Integration, NVH and as a Technical Platform Lead.

In this first chapter we delved into very nature of the gas tank, construction, shapes, sizes, manufacturing processes, mounting and materials. We also spoke with motorcycle restorers, bike builders and antique curators.

At one time a gas tank was just a fuel cell with a petcock mounted over a Briggs and Stratton engine. Remember?

Hell, tanks have gone from being soldered fuel cells, sometimes with lead, silver and or brass, to MiG and TIG welded, manual welding all the way to robotics.

Tanks were originally tin pounded over bucks or wooden forms and then pressed with solid steel molds and now hydraulically deep-drawn metal shapes.

As tank shapes slipped from utilitarian to lifestyle driven components, they became the “Cherry on top of the magnificent V-twin engine configuration,” said Brad. Prior to joining Harley-Davidson in February 2015, Richards was Chief Designer at Ford Motor Company and also responsible for managing the design of F-Series Truck products including the aluminum 2015 F-150 and the 2018 Ford Raptor.

With technological advances and more lifestyle demands tanks forced manufacturers to up their stylistic game with hidden welds. “We make the difficult, look simple,” said Brad.

I asked the factory guys about the two iconic tank shapes, Fatbob tanks and Sportster tanks.

“I was recently challenged to evolve Harley-Davidson’s product experience and to deliver a consistent Look, Sound and Feel of our motorcycles,” Brad added. He expanded his responsibilities in August 2022 to deliver an authentic Harley-Davidson user experience that builds a strong emotional connection between rider and machine that many of our customers desire in our products. Let’s see how his mission plays out in the future. It’s a tough one.

Brad pointed out that the new Sportster Nightster tank is not a tank at all but an air cleaner cover. The fuel tank is once again utilitarian fuel tank stashed under the seat.

One of Jeremy’s most proud work projects included the Technical Lead delivering Sportster S to production. “Collaborating with world class H-D employees and using world class tools to enable the visuals on the Sportster S was exhilarating,” said Jeremy.

Jeremy focused on another motorcycle design topic. Form grappling with function. The tank under the seat like oil tanks under transmissions lower the center of gravity and improves handling. Hell, all the tanks on EVs are fake, to make the bikes like we expect them to look.

There’s the on-going challenge of what we expect a bike to look like verses the physical experience,” said Brad. “With the tank under the seat the bike feels 60 pounds lighter.”

Jeremy added another major benefit to the new Revolution Max powertrain. “It afforded us a powerplant for numerous models,” including the new Pan America, all terrain Harley.

Back to tanks, Brad pointed out that each new model has a new tank logo design unlike many other brands. Harley-Davidson endeavors to watch the market and events like Born Free for new, trick and innovative tank art.

We also spoke to Don Whalen, motorcycle curator and founder of Sierra Madre Motorcycle Company, who pointed out that some early manufacturers positioned the fuel cells or gas tanks in pipes manufactured into the frames. Oil supplies also found themselves in frame tubing. He reminded me of repairs to vintage motorcycle tanks at radiator shops. The pressure tested tanks had seams or cracks sealed with lead.

It’s a constant challenge to manufacture a motorcycle in vast quantities and meet multiple criteria. But Jeremy, who has been riding since his uncle hoisted him onto an H-D gas tank for his first motorcycle ride, hit the nail on the head. “I’m drawn to winning,” he said. “Harley-Davidson designs, engineers the most desirable motorcycles in the world, and I just had to be a part of that.”

Hang on. With the next batch of tanks, we will cover the paint designs and materials from metal flake, flames, panels and candies with masterminds in the field like Dave Perewitz, the Emperor of House of Kolors, John Kosmoski, and helmet artist Atomic Bob. Hell, I toured the new factory paint facility back in the ‘90s.

Another H-D Recall: Nearly 200,000 Harley Touring Models

  • Nearly 200,000 Harley Touring Models Could Have Brake Light Issue
  • On affected bikes and trikes, rear brake lights could light up even when riders are not braking.

On October 21, 2022, Harley-Davidson issued a safety recall for 199,419 different 2019 through 2022 Trike and CVO Trike and 2020 through 2022 Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles. The fault involves a software issue that determines when the rear brake lights on these bikes are illuminated.

In certain cases, the rear brake lights may stay lit up even if the rider has not activated the brakes and is not braking at that time. This condition could cause vehicles following those bikes to misjudge when a bike in front of them is actually braking, thus increasing the risk of a crash.

A total of 31,572 2019 through 2022 Trike and CVO Trikes with VINS ranging between 1HD1MAF14KB850024 and 1HD1MCP19NB854018 (not sequential), manufactured between the dates of July 6, 2018 and June 23, 2022, are involved in this recall. This includes the following models:

  • 2019 FLHTCUTG and FLRT
  • 2020 through 2022 FLHTCUTG, FLRT, and FLHTCUTGSE

Harley-Davidson advises that motorcycles produced after June 24, 2022, have both a new pressure switch and a software calibration update that fixes this issue. Therefore, they should not be affected by this recall. The company notified its dealer network about this issue between October 21 and 28, 2022. It is also sending owner notification letters between October 26 and November 2, 2022.

Owners of affected bikes should arrange service with their local authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, who will perform a software update to affected Touring and CVO Touring motorcycles at no charge to the customer. Likewise, owners of affected Trikes and CVO Trikes will receive both a software update and a new pressure switch, also installed at no cost to the customer.

Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson’s number for this recall is 0635.

But there are good times ahead and the truth is coming to the surface. When someone says, “Fossil fuels are bad, hell you can see the smog,” here are some simple facts:

Over the last 10,000 years, 6,100 years were warmer than it is now and there were no fossil fuels or SUVs.

Seas have been rising at a steady pace for 200 years, since the end of the little ice age.

Burning Fossil Fuels helped the planet avoid dangerously low C02 levels, not the other way around.

There you have it, the facts. Your straight pipes are cool and so is the ol’ lady’s SUV. When it’s warming life is abundant. When it cools or another ice age approaches, we’re in trouble.

Classic of the week: 1963 Aermacchi Ala Verde

translated by most sources, “ala verde” is Italian for “green wing.” After only moderate success with the streamline-styled Chimera*, Aermacchi took the sloper 175 cc engine out to about 250ccs and adapted the stylish Chimera’s single shock spine frame into a more conventional twin shock design. The 175 and 250 versions began a 15-year run in a range of street and racing bikes. The design became a popular street bike, but also achieved amazing results in the hands of racers here, in Britain and in Europe.

Unusual with its sloping single cylinder and spine frame, this Aermacchi design was otherwise straight forward using an overhead valve air-cooled single cylinder engine. Initially using six-volt battery ignition, race versions incorporated magneto ignitions, and later machines were higher revving short strokes with five-speed gear boxes. You can imagine maintenance was simple even if you had to pull the engine, important with race bikes.

Aer Macchi means “air machine” in Italian. Aermacchi was founded in 1912 by Giulio Macchi to build airplanes. Soon after World War II, in 1951, the company expanded to make motorcycles. Harley-Davidson, looking for a way to get proven small motorcycles to their dealers, around 1960 bought a 50% share of the company, and adapted an existing Aermacchi, a 250cc motorcycle to become the Harley Sprint.

Indeed, through this 175 cc four-stroke pushrod “sloper” engine design, the Harley Sprint engine began its life. Note the dual branding on this bike’s tank graphics. Many more two-stroke and four-stroke Aermacchi-built bikes became part of the Harley-Davidson line.

Designed by Alfred Bianchi, introduced in 1956 and very radical for the time, the original Chimera was not a sales success; some documents state less than 125 of the 175cc machines were built. Available as both a 175 and a 250 it was later redesigned as a more conventional motorcycle which gave birth to the Harley-Davidson Sprint available in displacements up to 350 cc’s. Typical for the time and Italian design, the bike shifts on the right and has no intake air filtration, unusual is the left side kick starter.

A close look at this motorcycle, located in the Museum’s Cafe Racer exhibit, reveals a few custom touches. The forks have been stripped of their sheet metal covers, have been polished and alloy seal retainers installed. The front fender is trimmed a bit and the front drum brake ventilated. The seats on most Ala Verdes are decked and completely upholstered whereas this bike has a stylish hard finished seat cowl of unknown origin and special inner fender. Rims are polished alloy instead of chrome plated steel.

When you visit the National Motorcycle Museum you can take in American Picker Frank Fritz’s Sprint, John Parham’s Pebble Beach winning blue and cream Chimera* 175, and other great Italian designed motorcycles. This Ala Verde is from the Jill & John Parham Collection and all of these Sprint versions are on the Museum website under MOTORCYCLES.

FILM REVIEW OF THE WEEK–Another Showcase of Motorcycle Action

This week I recommend watching the wild action-comedy featuring a Triumph motorcycle with a blonde rider who ain’t James Bond.

He is the “Hitman’s Bodyguard” (2017) killing Belarus assassins to keep the outlaw hitman alive so that the killer can testify in International Criminal Court in Prague against a genocidal dictator from a former Soviet State, while keeping the compromised Interpol out of the way.

How is that for a complete breakdown and synopsis?

Well, that doesn’t do “justice” to the balanced dose of action and comedy. Obviously the two leading men developed a very comfortable rapport off-screen and this reflects in their scenes.

Here are snippets :
“This man single-handedly ruined the word m*****## , Do you know how hard that is to do?”

The motorcycle action has poster boy Ryan Reynolds riding on a cool Triumph through the lanes of Amsterdam, where all those bicycle riders wonder what that thing on two-wheels is?

“Relax m*****##, if you hear the shot then it wasn’t meant for you.”

There are real outdoor adventures too, through cow pastures and hitching a ride in a van full of nuns.

“I know hamburgers who know more about love than you.”

Great camaraderie by the actors, great action movie punchlines, great chase, meaning of justice and limited “rights” of the lawmen against evil guys. The gun action and unarmed combat are as good as the first “John Wick” movie.

Triumph is really capitalizing on memories of yore in Hollywood by offering Triumph motorcycles to cool well-produced movies.

I enjoyed this more than the last James Bond movie (who isn’t sick of that dead lover of Bond angle anymore ? It’s as lengthy as a Martin Scorcese movie in recent times)

DON’T FORGET TO VOTE— Midterm Election Polls Show Americans Want Their Freedom

When President Joe Biden (D) again called for a ban on popular, commonly-owned semi-automatic rifles on October 13—a goal the White House press secretary repeated on October 24—he was attempting to dictate to Americans what are the key issues at stake in this midterm election on November 8.

But then, President Biden has long misunderstood the American love for freedom.

President Biden said in July that “the American people agree with this common sense action” when referring to a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to ban the sale of firearms that use a technology invented in the late nineteenth century.

So Biden, and one supposes many members of his administration, believe that taking away the freedom to own an old technology—semi-automatic firearms have been popularly sold for well over 100 years to the American public—is a winning campaign issue at a time when far-left policies have arguably caused a crime wave.

The thing is, voters say they don’t buy this false narrative.

A survey by The New York Times/Siena College? found that just 1% of likely voters said “gun policies” are the “most-important” problem facing America today.

Actually, instead of blaming semi-automatic firearms for the actions of murderers and other criminals, millions of Americans have bought their first gun over the last few years—and the number-one firearm type first-time gun buyers purchase is the semi-automatic pistol.

In the Times/Siena poll, 44% of likely voters said the economy and inflation (26% said the “economy” and 18% said “inflation”) were their top two concerns. ?The old adage “it’s the economy stupid” is still relevant.

And this poll was hardly an outlier. Actually, as The Hill reported on October 18, “Inflation, crime and immigration are entrenched as voters’ top concerns heading into next month’s midterm elections.” The Hill was citing a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll.

Also, a Monmouth University poll found that “[f]ewer than 1 in 10 select … gun control (9%)” as their most-important concern in this election; in fact, the same poll found only a 30% approval for President Biden on gun control.

This, of course, hasn’t stopped President Biden from calling for new gun and magazine bans. Americans already own over 24.4 million of the semi-automatic rifles Biden would call “assault weapons.” It is difficult to even measure the huge number of so-called “high-capacity” magazines Americans own today. Clearly, these rifles, along with semi-automatic handguns and shotguns, are in common use and therefore have constitutional protections.

All of this shows that the Biden administration is living in an ideological bubble. It believes that blaming freedom for a crime wave is a believable argument—even when policy changes, such as cash-free bail policies in some areas, are obviously letting violent criminals walk, allowing them to continue to prey on the public. Despite a lot of mainstream-media spin, a large percentage of voters are not buying the Biden administration’s false claim.

This election is, and must be, a law-and-order referendum that will, hopefully, force public officials across America to alter policies to target the criminal class in our society, not our freedom.

The long wait is over: The federal replica car law has finally taken effect. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a regulation in March permitting replica manufacturers to begin production of completed vehicles.

The law allows low-volume manufacturers to sell up to 325 new fully-functional replicas per year that resemble production vehicles from at least 25 years ago. Enthusiasts will now be able to purchase reimagined versions of classic vehicles, including everything from Roaring Twenties cars and 1930s roadsters to 1970s muscle cars and rare exotics among others.

Having a chance to sell brand-new heritage cars consumers could drive off the lot was just a dream in 2011 when SEMA worked with lawmakers in the U.S. Congress to introduce the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act. Years of advocacy on Capitol Hill by SEMA and its kit car allies led to the replica car provision becoming law as part of the 2015 highway bill.

Thirteen years and going strong as ever! The Born-Free Motorcycle Show couldn’t have grown into what it has become if it hadn’t been able to stay relevant. And in my opinion, it has not only remained relevant, it has become more relevant each year.

This year Born-Free 13 was the first show to be held on the last weekend of June, its usual timeslot, since the pre-Covid Born-Free 11 in 2019. (Born-Free 12 was finally staged, after several government-mandated postponements, in August of 2021.) The excitement and energy of the invited builders, as well as the crowd, was as palpable as ever and perhaps even more so. To me, it felt like they never skipped a beat.

DIRECT FROM THE CLIMATE DOOM DEPARTMENT

In 2009, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, under the auspices of the Clean Air Act, falsely determined that carbon dioxide was a pollutant. This is known as the Endangerment Finding and has been used since then to enable EPA to regulate and control CO2 emissions.

It is this authority that is being used to shut down coal power plants, kill internal combustion vehicles, ban natural gas for home heating and the misguided attempt to achieve a net zero economy.

On October 14th, the Concerned Household Electricity Consumers Council petitioned the United States Court Of Appeals For The District Of Columbia for a review of their petition to repeal the Endangerment Findings.

The CO2 Coalition, along with Doctors William Happer and Richard Lindzen, filed an amicus brief in support of their petition.

Our amicus brief found that the Endangerment Findings should be rescinded immediately because they were based on:

  • Speculative theories and not on the scientific method
  • False science based on consensus, fabricated material, and models that don’t work
  • Government opinion, not real science
  • Censorship of any science that contradicted their notion of man-made catastrophic warming

In addition, we found that net zero will disastrously reduce food worldwide and eliminate the major source of low-cost energy for the US and people worldwide.

This is a hugely important case that is only now making its way through our legal system.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA AND VETERANS DAY

The 11th hour has become synonymous with Veterans Day, originally called Armistice day, in recognition of the document signed at the 11th hour, or the 11th day, of the 11th month. In reality, the Armistice ending the war to end all wars was signed around 5 am on November 11th.

Over the course of the next 6 hours, nearly 3,000 men would lose their lives in the final hours of a war that had already claimed the lives of 20 million military personnel. The final death of WW1 came at 10:59 am one minute before the guns of war would fall silent.

Private Henry Gunther was a German-American drafted in the fall of 1917; most accounts state that his final actions were motivated by Gunther’s need to demonstrate that he was “courageous and all-American.” A chaplain from Gunther’s unit recounted, “As 11 a.m. approached, Gunther suddenly rose with his rifle and ran through thick fog. His men shouted for him to stop. So did the Germans. But Gunther kept running and firing. One machine gun blast later, he was dead. His death was recorded at 10:59 a.m.

In every conflict, inevitably a final service member pays the ultimate sacrifice. In World War II, Private Charlie Havlat, the son of Czech immigrants, in the closing days of the war, found himself liberating his parents’ former homeland – word of the cease-fire reached his position minutes after he was killed.

Officially, the U.S. has never declared a final casualty in the Korean War; since the armistice was signed, nearly 100 U.S. Soldiers have been killed in combat on the Korean peninsula. On April 29, 1975, Charles McMahon and Darwin Judge were two of a small number of Marines tasked with safeguarding the U.S. Embassy in Saigon. They had been deployed for only 11 days when they were killed by a rocket attack. The U.S. would complete the process of withdrawing from Saigon the following day.

Staff Sergeant Ryan Knauss was the last of the 2,461 Service Members who died in Afghanistan; he along with 12 of his comrades was killed in a suicide attack during the withdrawal from Kabul.

In every war, there is always one that must fill the dignified but dubious role in history as being the last to give the full measure of devotion. Each year on the 11th day of the 11th month as a nation we pause, not only to honor those that have given their lives but for all those who believed so deeply in American exceptionalism that they were willing to give their lives to defend it.

For most Americans talking about war is conceptual, something learned through history books, news reports, and movies – those that have served do not have that luxury. Not only should we remember that the democratic principles we hold so dear have been defended by generations of Americans whom we honor on Veterans Day, but more importantly we should take inspiration from that sacrifice.

Our country, despite all our self-imposed differences, needs to look to our Veterans and see that there are no divisions in a foxhole – there are only those who stand in defense of democracy and those who stand against it.

While we may only celebrate Veterans Day with a few moments of silence each year, we have an opportunity to use those moments to find our own way to serve as part of our commitment to living up to the legacy of our Veterans.

When the Armistice was signed in 1918 when the Japanese surrendered, and when the last flights departed Kabul and Saigon – these were not simply endings – they were new beginnings. We honor those who serve by recommitting ourselves to making the sacrifices necessary to preserve our way of life.

As Adlai Stevenson once stated, “Patriotism is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.” Let this Veterans Day be a new beginning. Go forth and find a way to serve, our nation, our communities, and each other – we owe it to our Veterans.

NEWS FROM THE LITHIUM MINES— 

E-scooter battery sparks blaze, 15 e-bikes damaged

Hours after the ‘faulty’ battery of an e-scooter manufactured by a Jaipur-based Tech Startup company “Batt:RE” was returned to a Vasai dealer by the owner for replacement, it exploded.

The battery, under warranty, was not being charged when sparks led to the explosion and a fire. While no one was injured, 15 e-bikes and furniture of the showroom were destroyed.

It is the second case of an e-scooter battery of the same company exploding in Vasai. Last month, a 7-year-old boy died after the battery, being charged, exploded.

While e-scooters in both cases are of the same model, the batteries belong to different companies.

Battery was seized by the fire brigade. The Manickpur police station said it will be sent for forensic analysis.

FROM LAW TIGERS– Motorcycle Safety Inspection
6 Step DIY Checklist

How often do you examine your motorcycle before you hit the open road? Before every single ride? Sometimes? Almost never?

We’re not talking about a brief check to make sure you’ve got two inflated tires. Instead, we’re referring to the land vehicle equivalent of a pilot’s aircraft inspection. While you don’t necessarily have to be as comprehensive as an airline pilot, we highly recommend taking a close look at your bike before jumping on and going for a ride.

We’ve outlined seven steps you should walk through to verify your motorcycle is road-ready.

Step 1: Start with the Obvious
Do a 360 look around the bike and look for anything obvious that seems unsafe or out of place. Specifically, you might notice a crack in the frame, loose footpegs, or leaks. If anything needs to be repaired, make sure you handle those repairs before making any trips.

Step 2: Look at Your Wheels
There are a couple of things you should be looking for here. The first is adequate tire pressure. Make sure that the tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended psi.

Next, check the tread to make sure you’ve got proper traction for the road. Look for even wear and enough remaining tread. You can tell you’ve got enough tread by putting a penny head down in the tread’s grooves. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, then it’s time to replace the tires.

Step 2: Check the Brakes
Here, you’ll want to look at your brake pads to ensure they haven’t experienced excessive wear. If your brake pads had grooves in them when they were new (and most do), make sure that there is still evidence of a groove.

We also suggest testing your brakes (both front and rear) to ensure they work.

Step 3: Confirm Electrical Systems are a Go
Whether your bike is brand new or vintage, you’ll at least need to ensure the battery is in good working order. Check the terminal cables to verify they’re firmly attached and make sure there’s no corrosion. If you do notice some gunk, a simple baking soda solution can wipe things clean.

Turn the ignition key and examine the display to ensure everything that should light up does, and no warning lights appear. You can also take this opportunity to check all of your lights, including headlight and taillight, your turn signals, and your brake light. Give your horn a quick honk to be sure it’s functional and audible.

And finally, while you’re here, check the rotation of the handlebars to ensure a full range of motion.

Step 4: Examine Your Hoses
A leaking or detached hose can leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere. At worst, you could end up in an accident as you lose fluid or power from a faulty hose. Take a quick look at your hoses to check that they’re connected properly and free from cracks.

Step 5: Ensure Proper Hydration
Just like humans need to stay hydrated to survive, your motorcycle also relies on fluids to operate. The most important fluids to check are engine oil, fork oil (which is necessary for lubrication), and brake fluid. If your bike uses transmission fluid, remember to check those levels as well.

Step 6: Verify Your Gear is Operational
The final step is to make sure that all of your gear is in top shape. Examine your helmet and make sure it’s not cracked, and you can see through the visor. Even a superficial crack that seems cosmetic can affect the structural integrity of the helmet and diminish its protective capabilities in a crash.

Another factor to consider is whether your clothing, gloves, and shoes fit properly, are comfortable, and allow for an adequate range of motion.

The Importance of Motorcycle Safety Inspections
These inspections only take a few minutes, and they can mean the difference between a fun-filled ride and one that ends in tragedy. Nearly two million scooters and motorcycles were bought by customers in the fest festive season, signaling a healthy revival in demand across rural and semi-urban markets, where sales had languished over the last three years as the pandemic hit the purchasing power of entry-level customers.

Heavy Industries Ministry announces new safety tests for electric vehicles

These tests will enhance human safety of the battery used in these vehicles by requiring checks at three levels – the battery pack, battery management system (BMS) and the cell, as per a circular from the ministry.

This comes at a time when many have raised questions around safety standards of EVs sold in India following a spate of incidents of these vehicles spontaneously bursting into flames, leading to the loss of multiple lives.

TRIBUTE OF THE WEEK

It’s with deep sadness we heard of the passing of Diane Morrow, wife to the racing and performance icon Carl Morrow and mom to racing legend Doug Morrow. The family was also extremely close to Evel Knievel.

I met Diane several times at the Carl’s Speed Shop facility in California. Carl and I were team members on a Monster Garage episode. I also had the opportunity to see the delightful Mrs. Morrow in Daytona at their new headquarters a couple of times. Doug called to tell me about her medical issue and how serious it was, but then only a week later she passed.

She was special to the end.

ADVENTURE RALLY CELEB ANNOUNCEMENT
Ryan Villopoto, Multi-Time Supercross & Motocross Champion, to Appear at Adventure Rally & Camp

Ryan Villopoto, a multi-time AMA Supercross and Motocross champion, will be making an appearance at the Adventure Rally & Camp this week at Stagecoach Trails Resort in Julian, Calif. Villopoto will be riding a Yamaha T700 at the Adventure Rally & Camp.

Villopoto won his first championship in 2006 in MX Lites. He followed that up the next year with another MX Lites title as well as the AMA West SX Lites championship. Villopoto made it a three-peat in 2008, claiming his third consecutive MX Lites title.

In 2011, the West Coast native claimed both the AMA Supercross 450 championship and the AMA 450 Motocross title. In, 2012, Villopoto was the AMA Supercross 450 champion. He repeated the next year and made it three straight titles in 2014. Villopoto also claimed the 2013 AMA 450 Motocross championship.

The Adventure Rally & Camp is a three-day challenge for riders of any skill level and their bike. During the day, riders take part in self-navigated scenic trail rides and look for elusive checkpoints laid out by the Adventure Rally & Camp staff. At night, competitors build camaraderie, along with industry guests, often around a campfire with movies, music and cold beverages.

Teams of two or more will take part in challenges on the trails as well in special tests, during the Adventure Rally & Camp. The special tests are conducted at the Stagecoach Trails Base Camp and are designed to test riders overall adventure skills.

Arizona Senator Rallies for Passage of the RPM Act
Since being elected to Congress in November 2020, U.S. Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) has proven himself to be a strong ally and defender of motorsports.

Sen. Kelly is an original cosponsor of S. 2736, the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2021 (RPM Act), and he has championed the bill both publicly and behind the scenes.

Sen. Kelly recently spoke at a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing about the importance of the RPM Act and amateur racing, noting that his wife, former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords, raced motorcycles on the track.

“Racing is important to many Arizonans – and it’s a part of our state’s legacy,” he said. “The RPM Act will help provide certainty to Arizona’s amateur racers and auto mechanics from EPA regulations, which could harm their ability to enjoy the hobby of motorsport.”

Hurricane Ian caused billions in damage and upended lives, but few people expected that it would cause electric vehicles to burst into flames.

But that’s just what happened.

In the days following Hurricane Ian, the saltwater flooding in coastal areas caused the lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles to combust.

Firefighters in Naples, for example, needed to extinguish six blazes in EVs that had been submerged in seawater.

Heather Mazurkiewicz, a spokesperson for the fire department, said firefighters needed “thousands upon thousands” of gallons of water to extinguish the EV fires — much more than what a typical gas car fire would require.

2023 Federal Legislative Agenda

At the 2022 Motorcycle Riders Foundation’s (MRF) 38th annual Meeting of the Minds Conference held in Des Moines, Iowa a legislative strategy session was hosted by the MRF’s Legislative Committee. The purpose of the session was to establish and prioritize the MRF’s 2023 Federal Legislative Agenda.

Legislative issues fall into one of three categories, high, medium and monitor. This list remains fluid and can be adapted depending on the issue and political environment.

Below is a brief description of the issues on the MRF’s 2023 agenda. The January 2023 issue of the American Biker Journal will have more detail on each of these legislative priorities. As a reminder, all MRF members receive a copy of the American Biker Journal with their membership.

The 2023 Motorcycle Riders Foundation Legislative Priorities List

HIGH PRIORITY OBJECTIVES:

  • Profiling – Sustain lobbying efforts for the passage of resolutions or legislation that promotes awareness and prohibition of motorcyclist profiling.
  • Renewable Fuels – Advocate for targeted changes to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) including supporting the universal availability of approved fuel blends, containing no more than 10% ethanol by volume.
  • Autonomous Vehicles – Advocate and monitor any legislation or regulations related to motorcycles concerning connected and autonomous vehicles (AV):
  • Emission Regulations – Engage the EPA & Congress on any activity related to motorcycle emission regulations including efforts by California and other states that endangers the future of motorcycling
  • Definition of a Motorcycle – Seek a more appropriate and up to date federal definition of a motorcycle which reflects the current set of vehicles on the roads today.
  • Crash Avoidance – Promote the theme of crash avoidance versus safer crashing, urging NHTSA and the DOT to focus on crash prevention and rider education.
  • Helmet Laws – Oppose any mandatory federal helmet, apparel, or conspicuity standards
  • Black Box / Data Recording – Pursue legislative language that any collected or available vehicle data is the property of the consumer and in which the consumer has the choice to opt-in to having their personal data communicated to interested parties.
  • Internal Combustion Engines – Work to ensure the survival of internal combustion engines.

2023 MEDIUM PRIORITY OBJECTIVES:

  • Surface Transportation Reauthorization (Highway Bill) – Advocate and pursue legislative efforts related to the next highway bill reauthorization (expiring in 2026).
  • Roadway Design – Pursue safer roadway design strategies in federal infrastructure legislation or discussions.
  • Discriminatory Legislation – Oppose any motorcycling, motorcycle, or motorcyclist-based discriminatory legislation or rules proposed by the U.S. Congress or by any governmental agency.
  • Vulnerable Roadway User Terminology – Monitor and ensure that motorcycles and motorcyclists are a specific and unique category or classification.
  • Gang, Club and Other Language – Monitor and respond to federal legislative or regulatory activity concerning the usage of the terms gang, club, known associate, and associate when referring to motorcyclists.
  • Taxes – Encourage fair treatment of motorcyclists in any change to federal taxes related to transportation.

2023 MONITOR ITEMS:

  • Distracted Driving – Work to discourage any/all forms of distracted driving.
  • Sound Testing – Monitor any SAE Motorcycle Roadside Sound Testing or EPA action.
  • International Partnerships – Continue participation in motorcycle-related activity in the European Union, United Nations, and Canada informing the membership of key developments.
  • National Studies – Continue monitoring any national studies concerning motorcycles
  • Exhaust Systems – Monitor and vigorously oppose any federal standard proposing stamping and certifying of motorcycle exhaust systems.
  • Opponents – Monitor private and public organizations that oppose the legislative agenda or mission of the MRF.
  • Tolling – Monitor fair tolling concepts on federally funded roadways and projects supported by federal bonds and issues related to congestion tolling.
  • Lane Filtering and/or Lane Splitting – Monitor and support federal efforts to study and review the benefits and concerns of lane splitting and lane filtering.
  • Emissions – Monitor and report on any litigation related to motorcycle emissions violations.
  • Tariffs – Monitor any tariffs on imported motorcycles, parts, or apparel.
  • Incentives – Seek fair tax rebate and or credits for the purchase of electric motorcycles similar to those offered for electric automobiles.

GUNFIGHT RULE
 
“Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.”

In a gunfight, the most important rule is … HAVE A GUN!

The following are shooting tips from various Concealed Carry Instructors. If you own a gun, you will appreciate these rules… If not, you should get one, learn how to use it, and learn the rules.

RULES
A) Guns have only two enemies: Rust and Politicians. Rust can be prevented, but Politicians cannot.

B.) It’s always better to be judged by 12 than carried out by 6.

C) Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you

D.) Never let someone or something that threatens you get within 7 yards.

E.) Never say “I’ve got a gun.” If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they should hear is the safety clicking off, or the hammer cocking.

F.) The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes …when only seconds count; the response time of a .357 is 1,400 feet per second.

G.) The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always Win – there is no such thing as a fair fight. Always Win – cheat if necessary. Always Win – 2nd place doesn’t count.

H.) Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets .. you may get killed with your own gun, but they’ll have to beat you to death with it because it will be empty.

I.) If you’re in a gunfight:
(a) If you’re not shooting, you should be reloading.
(b) If you’re not reloading, you should be moving.
(c) If you’re not moving, you’re dead.

J.) In a life-and-death situation, do something … it may be wrong, but do something!

K.) If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?

L.) Never fire a warning shot, that is just one wasted bullet, which could be needed within moments.

M.) You can say “stop” or any other word, but a large bore muzzle pointed at someone’s head is pretty much a universal language; and, you won’t have to press 1 for Spanish/Mexican, 2 for Chinese, or 3 for Arabic.

N.) Never leave a wounded enemy behind. If you have to shoot, shoot to kill. In court, yours will be the only testimony.

O.) You cannot save the planet, but you may be able to save yourself and your family.

Here’s a shot of a billet machined ARCH motorcycle gas tank with the fuel pump bracket on the inside.

We are having a flag pole built by a local welder. I’m handling all the gear and the piece at the top. This is the basis for the first wing.

I’m working with Markus Cuff on the tank feature and he just completed the art and design for Carla Olson and Stephen McCarthy’s new cd.

I built this stand for a massive sink in the shop. I followed the Dream Girl’s art with tools to support the stand. I’m waiting on Wolf’s plumbing to hook it up.

We are waiting on a story about Deus Ex Machina, a struggling company. I remember visiting their location in Los Angeles. Hang on for the story.

I took this bracket and filter off the ’48 UL. It leaked around one of the hose fittings. I brazed it and replaced the bastard. Done deal, I could take it off the lift.

Exciting, the lift was cleared for my winter project.

A couple of brothers want to come over for the initial phase of setting the VL, XA, S&S Knucklehead project up on its wheels. We need a name for this puppy.

I’m anxious to see it on wheels. I’m just using a couple of wheels I have in the shop. That’s an 18 on the rear and a 19 front, which makes sense for the gravel roads around here. I wanted to go slim and classic, so I may replace them. I’m not up on tire sizes. I wouldn’t mind running a fat 19 rear if that’s possible and a 19 front. I wonder what’s available in 21-inch tires?

Okay, it’s almost whiskey time. Hang on for reports next week. If we can plug the Knuck together, I will write up the first tech next week. We are trying to order a JIMS 5 in a 4-speed transmission case. Randy at Dakota V-Twin is trying to chase one down.

MotoGP 22 Game Review: its the season for living-room-speed

You’ll find that it can feel way more accessible to beginners while simultaneously catering to a more sim-focused crowd.

The ongoing MotoGP season has been an absolute blast so far, with each race offering plenty of entertainment for motorsport fans to enjoy. We’ve seen fantastic performances as well as embarrassing mistakes from riders like Aleix Espargaró, Francesco Bagnaia, and the reigning world champion Fabio Quartararo, whose DNF in Assen is sure to spice up the title challenge after the summer break.

Since we’re currently waiting for the action to restart at Silverstone on August 7, it’s a perfect time to discuss the newest installment of Milestone’s officially-licensed videogame franchise. Just like its predecessor, MotoGP 22 hasn’t managed to butter everyone’s toast, and a common complaint you’ll hear people make is related to the lack of any major improvements over last year’s title.

In all fairness, the game isn’t considerably better than its 2021 counterpart, but subtle tweaks and baby steps are what we’ve come to expect from annual sporting releases of this sort. Nonetheless, it is a shame the developers haven’t taken the opportunity to make the career mode more interesting, nor did they add the dynamic weather feature that people were hoping for.

As far as graphics are concerned, substantial steps have been taken to refine the overall look of textures, liveries, and, most notably, riders’ faces. Whereas the previous MotoGP was rather awful as regards the latter, I was pleased to find that facial models are vastly improved this time around. Credit where credit is due; this year’s GP racing sim from Milestone Interactive offers the best visual experience of the whole series!

Aesthetics aside, the gameplay feels responsive and way more accessible to beginners than that of prior releases. New players may access a plethora of comprehensive tutorials to learn the ropes, and the various assists can certainly make the learning curve feel less terrifying. Turn them off, and you’ll be punished for the slightest mistake, but the game’s difficulty is perfectly manageable when some (or all) of these functions are employed.

Giving you the ability to find an ideal balance for your skillset, MotoGP 22 is a much better pick for newcomers than its forerunner. One should not, however, rely too heavily on things like braking point markers or the color-coded ideal trajectory line, as they’ll often cause you to brake later than necessary and end up in the gravel.

Even though more seasoned players won’t be using these aids anyway, it’s something to keep in mind if you’re just starting out. As for the AI, I found it to be a little more aggressive and spatially aware than before, though there’s copious room for improvement left in this area. Instances where other riders bump straight into you on corner exits, are still present, so be prepared to deal with such annoyances from time to time.

An additional layer of complexity is added by the freshly-introduced ride height device (RHD), which can be used when accelerating out of turns to prevent wheelies. Furthermore, many found the curbs to be harsh and largely unusable last year, and that’s one aspect of track design the developers have addressed since then. As the physics were also updated, they may feel a bit weird at first, but it’s not too much of a hassle to get used to them.

While the career and quick modes fall firmly within what we’ve grown accustomed to over time, the same can’t be said for the documentary-style Nine: Season 2009 campaign. Directed and narrated by Mark Neale, the said mode takes you on a trip down memory lane to a time when four contenders battling ruthlessly for the world title.

Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa, and Casey Stoner; are all coming within a few points of one another in the first half of the season. The Doctor went on to secure his seventh and last championship in the premier class that year, and you’ll be stepping into the shoes of multiple riders as the storyline progresses through iconic moments.

Separate chapters depict every race from Losail to Valencia, with each of them providing various challenges for players to complete. These are intertwined with approximately 50 minutes of footage from the 2009 season, alongside Neale’s masterful narration describing how the events unfolded. Add smooth gameplay and the thrilling wail of inline-fours to that equation, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for pure bliss!

Regardless of the mixed feedback MotoGP 22 has received thus far, this nostalgia-rousing element really sets it apart from older iterations. Most players seem to agree that it’s an enthralling experience, and I’m personally hoping to see Milestone deliver more like it in the future. Besides the single-player game types, one may also join online lobbies to race against other people or bring some friends over and engage in good old split-screen duels.

Menus are way tidier than the cluttered mess we saw in earlier releases, with the main background showing bikes from different teams every time you fire things up. Not that it’s such a huge deal, but it definitely is yet another step in the right direction for this franchise. Although there isn’t much of a soundtrack to talk about here, the music you will be hearing doesn’t become irritating after a few minutes or so, which is much appreciated.

Conclusion : Folks may call MotoGP 22 a reskin all they like, but what they need to understand is that developers can’t afford to stray too far from the established formula on yearly sports titles. Just look at the incremental manner in which EA Sports’ series is progressing, and you’ll immediately see what I’m trying to convey. With this being said, it’s time to answer the pivotal question: is the game worth your hard-earned cash?

Priced at 50 bucks on Steam, Milestone’s latest Grand Prix sim packs just the right amount of novel content to be categorized as money well spent. The brilliantly-executed Nine: Season 2009 affair is heavily responsible for this, though it’s far from being the only thing that makes the new MotoGP stand out. With its (optional) welcoming attitude towards beginners and subtle yet effective refinements, I’d say this installment is totally worth checking out.
