CHILLY BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for December 15th, 2022

Hey,

Wild snow in Sturgis. I can feel the four solid days of whiteness waning. Yesterday, I spent hours trying to clear a path to the front door only to be immediately snowed over.

Go ahead, call it Global Warming. The high yesterday was 14 degrees. “You could feel it,” I said and kept shoveling.

Let’s hit the news:

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION ALERT– ALL BIKERS

ABATE of Wisconsin has been asking the State Department of Transportation to fully investigate all crashes involving not only Tesla’s, but all vehicles with Autonomous Technology built in, to learn the impact of this technology on Wisconsin roads. This is our chance to help the Motorcycle Riders Foundation in getting Congress members to request the same from NHTSA.

The survey only takes a minute to complete so PLEASE, complete it and forward it on to all your family and friends. Let’s get all eight Wisconsin Congress members to sign on to this very important letter.

You Have Until Thursday to Help Protect Bikers…

The Co-Chairman of the House Motorcycle Caucus, Rep. Tim Walberg of Michigan, is sending a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding self-driving cars and motorcycles. Crashes involving self-driving cars and motorcycles have made news over the last few months and Rep. Walberg and his colleagues on Capitol Hill are seeking answers.

In the letter to Ann Carlson, Acting Administrator of NHTSA, lawmakers are asking basic questions like, “Should motorcyclists take extra precautions when sharing the road with this new technology?”

Want to help?

The letter goes out Friday… ACT NOW!

TUCKER Hires Dallas Cowboys Executive to Fill VP of Marketing Role

Fort Worth TX – December 13, 2022 – Tucker Powersports today announced the hiring of Lesley Madsen as the company’s Vice President of Marketing.

Madsen’s role at Tucker is focused on delivering impactful marketing programs for the company’s “owned-brands” as well as the products distributed by Tucker. Madsen left her role at Dallas Cowboys Merchandising to join Tucker earlier this month.

Tucker President and CEO Marc McAllister had earlier announced a restructure of the company’s Sales and Marketing functions and his plan to bring new leadership into the company.

“Lesley’s experience in marketing, brand building and distribution makes her a natural for this role at Tucker,” said McAllister. “She will bring her strategic and analytical approach to our marketing efforts and will help us provide better support for our brands and our dealers.”

“I grew up in a family that loved the outdoors,” said Madsen. “My family’s dedication to scouting gave us a true appreciation for outdoor adventure. This opportunity with Tucker gives me a chance to leverage my professional talent to support our dealers and customers who share the same passion.”

Madsen’s business background includes seven years with the merchandise arm of the Dallas Cowboys with responsibility for supporting retail and wholesale marketing and distribution for the Dallas Cowboys and 81Eighty organizations. Previous to the Cowboys, she held leadership roles in marketing, advertising, public relations advertising and digital communications with major brands in electronics and entertainment.

THIS JUST IN FROM THE NATIONAL MOTORIST ASSOCIATION
Guns in Motor Vehicles–What Are Your Rights

On June 23, 2022 the US Supreme Court ruled in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen that New York’s law requiring citizens to show a “Special need” to obtain a gun carry permit/license violated the Second Amendment.

Writing for the majority, Justice Clarence Thomas said,

“We know of no other Constitutional Right that an individual may exercise only after demonstrating to government officers some special need.”

How will this decision affect a motorist’s right to legally carry a gun when traveling within their state and from state to state?

Prior to this ruling, each state set its own laws. Now, each state will have to revise its carry laws to cover both residents and non-residents driving in their state with a legally owned gun. This change will create many discrepancies, arrests, court fights, and federal court cases that potentially could run for years, if not decades, before being clearly resolved.

The first volley fired in response to this Supreme Court ruling came on August 1, 2022, when New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a bill requiring anyone who wants to get a carry permit to provide the State with access to all their social media accounts for the previous 3 years. The new laws went into effect in September and by November, legal challenges, and temporary injunctions, went to the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The three-judge panel ruled to reinstate the enforcement of NY’s carry law amid the ongoing legal challenge.

For me, the new laws appear to violate an individual’s Fourth Amendment right to privacy and First Amendment right to free speech.

What’s the Carry Law in Various States?

Some states, like New York and California, will do everything they can (as they have been doing) to make owning a gun, and especially carrying/driving with a gun, by a resident or visitor, almost impossible. In Texas where I live, we already have a “Constitutional Carry” law that allows any adult that is legally allowed to own a gun to carry it–open or concealed—in a vehicle (with minor and reasonable limitations).

Currently 25 states have “Constitutional Carry.” They are Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Remember each state has different age requirements and other possible restrictions.

Also, if you have a concealed carry permit and plan to travel out-of-state, check out this website, usconcealedcarry.com for more details on states that permit reciprocity (includes a map for easy access).

Advice for Carrying Firearms during an Interstate Road Trip

My advice to all motorists who would like to travel armed is to call the state’s Attorney General’s office in each state you intend to travel to for clarification on current carry laws in vehicles. I would not call the state police as they are often uninformed, misconstrue what the law actually is, or are not current with the latest state law updates, or court rulings.

You will likely be directed to a state website that has the latest updates of that state’s laws on the carrying of a weapon, both on your person and in your vehicle. I suggest that you make written notes of the date, name of whom you spoke to, and a detailed account of those conversations just in case you have an issue, and carry them with you.

I see great confusion and inconsistencies all across this country as states try to comply with this latest Supreme Court ruling while at the same time protecting the public’s right to carry a gun on their person and in a motor vehicle. It’s important to learn how to navigate the ever-changing landscape of gun ownership and transporting your personal firearms in vehicles. Drive safely.

A Final Thought

Another issue not addressed yet by any court is how states will handle legally owned guns in motorhomes, fifth-wheels, and conversion vans, which are considered a “home” or “castle” when used as a temporary residence versus a car, pickup truck, or SUV.

BOOK REVIEW OF THE WEEK—Inconvenient Facts by Gregory Wrightsone, CO2 Coalition

I read it through and it should be on the reading list of all the greenies out there. In the words of Walter Cronkite ”That’s the way it is.” The greenies use untruths, half-truths and fear to promote their agenda.

An agenda that will send us into the pit of despair sooner than later if we don’t snap to.

Stating facts is lost with all the sensationalism and of course money being wasted on the promotion of an ill-conceived notion. Yes, solar has a place supporting equipment where wired power isn’t available or practical. But to power a city …no.

Everything I’ve read on Europe’s energy situation points to a self-inflicted kick in the balls.

I am certainly no expert but the direction we are heading is just a recipe for disaster.

Saw the video on the Bikernet blog which spells it out for even the densest person to see that we as a people are heading down the wrong road worldwide. The saying ya can’t fix stupid certainly applies to those who blindly follow the greenies.

ATLANTA (December 15, 2022) – Pirelli Tire North America is pleased to announce the return of its #PirelliNation road race rider program for the 2023 racing season. As the official tire of the MOTUL FIM World Superbike Championship, Pirelli and its DIABLO™ Superbike lineup are the go-to tires for racers around the world, which includes three consecutive victories at the world-renowned Daytona 200.

Pirelli remains dedicated to the grassroots part of the sport, continuing with its motto, “we sell what we race, we race what we sell” and offering all riders the ability to purchase the same race compound tires found on the bikes of their favorite professional riders and World Champions like Alvaro Bautista, Jonathan Rea, and Toprak Razgatlioglu.

The road race community program ensures racers are the first to know about the latest Pirelli news, be notified of the newest Pirelli products, receive updates on national marketing opportunities, and be given access to technical advice and service at select races. Pirelli’s team will also identify and select several candidates who can purchase race compound tires at preferred pricing and be outfitted with Pirelli team-branded gear. Residents of the United States are eligible for the program.

Racers accepted to the program will be awarded with several brand benefits in 2023.

“It was a great introductory season for the #PirelliNation road race rider program, which saw our brand achieve tons of success,” said Oscar Solis, road race manager, Pirelli. “The Pirelli DIABLO Superbike range, and all race compound tires, are developed alongside our professional riders in the World and National Championships before eventually making their way into the hands of local racers and everyday consumers. This strategy allows Pirelli to continuously work on the development to ensure the latest technology is incorporated into the same tires available at local dealers. This road racing community program has allowed us to strengthen our relationship with racers across the nation and provide them with the education and knowledge necessary to choose the best tire for them to reach success.”

Pirelli’s high-performance DIABLO Superbike lineup offers several different compounds including, SC1, SC2, and SC3 on the front and SCX, SC0, SC1, SC2, and SC3 on the rear. View the complete range of DIABLO Superbike tires on the Pirelli website.

Song: “Start Me Up”
Rock Group: The Rolling Stones
Album: Tattoo You (1981)
Songwriters: Mick Jagger / Keith Richards

If you start me up
If you start me up, I’ll never stop
If you start me up
If you start me up, I’ll never stop

If you start me up

Spread out the oil, the gasoline
I walk smooth, ride in a mean, mean machine
Start it up

If you start me up
Kick on the starter give it all you got, you got, you got
I can’t compete
With the riders in the other heats

If you rough it up
If you like it you can slide it up
Slide it up, slide it up, slide it up

Don’t make a grown man cry
Don’t make a grown man cry
Don’t make a grown man cry

My eyes dilate, my lips won’t wait
My hands are greasy, she’s a mean, mean machine
Start it up

Start me up
Give it all you got
You got to never, never, never stop
Slide it up, whoo
Oh baby, just slide it up
Slide it up, slide it up, never, never, never

You make a grown man cry
You make a grown man cry
You make a grown man cry

Ride like the wind at double speed
I’ll take you places that you’ve never, never seen

Start it up
Let me tell you we will never stop, never stop
Never, never, never stop
Start me up
Never stop, never stop

You, you, you make a grown man cry
You, you make a dead man come

REJECT NET ZERO— Embrace Energy Freedom

“Net zero by 2050” policies would be apocalyptically destructive if fully implemented. They should be totally rejected in favor of energy freedom policies.

“Net zero by 2050” policies would be apocalyptically destructive if fully implemented and have already been catastrophically destructive when barely implemented.

They should be totally rejected in favor of energy freedom policies.

What are “net zero by 2050 policies”?

Government (coercive) actions whose primary and binding goal is the net-elimination of CO2 (and other greenhouse gas) emissions, whose number one source is fossil fuel use, by 2050.

In practice “net zero” means: rapidly eliminate most fossil fuel use.

“Net zero by 2050” policies include:
  • Escalating restrictions or bans of fossil fuel development
  • Escalating restrictions or bans of fossil fuel use
  • Mandates of alternatives
  • Subsidies for alternatives
  • (Often) hostility to development
  • (Often) hostility to nuclear
What are “energy freedom policies”?

Government actions to protect the ability of producers to produce all forms of energy and consumers to use all forms of energy, so long as they don’t engage in reasonably preventable pollution or endangerment of others.

Energy freedom policies include:
  • Protecting the freedom to develop fossil fuels and other forms of energy. E.g., deep geothermal development.
  • Protecting the freedom to use fossil fuels and all other forms of energy. E.g., “decriminalizing nuclear.”
  • “Net zero by 2050” is currently the number one cultural and political goal in the world
  • Committed to by most world governments
  • Supported by leading corporations and financial institutions
  • Privately committed to by leading corporations and financial institutions
To determine the best policy toward fossil fuels—the energy source that powers most of the world, but whose CO2 emissions have a warming impact on its climate system—we need to follow a common-sense principle that is not common practice: carefully weigh benefits and side-effects.
Carefully weighing the benefits and side-effects of continuing fossil fuel use includes factoring in:

1. Fossil fuels’ overall benefits
2. Fossil fuels’ “climate mastery” benefits (which can neutralize negative side-effects)
3. The climate side-effects of fossil fuels with evenhandedness and precision

I believe any honest and informed attempt to carefully weigh the benefits and side-effects of continuing fossil fuel use will conclude that “net zero by 2050” is apocalyptically destructive and that we need the “energy freedom” to use a lot of fossil fuels and rapidly develop alternatives.

A note on “net zero by 2050” policies.

Unlike other proposed policies one might criticize, these are not untested, let alone promising policies.

They are tested-and-failed policies that are harming billions of lives right now. Even though they are only at 1% implementation!¹

To show you how destructive “net zero” is and how good “energy freedom” is I will carefully summarize the evidence regarding fossil fuels’ 1) benefits, 2) climate mastery benefits, and 3) climate side-effects, and based on each factor show what net zero vs. energy freedom would do in practice.

The benefits of continuing fossil fuel use — 3 essential facts

1. Cost-effective energy is essential to an abundant and safe world

2. Cost-effective energy is desperately needed by billions more people

3. Fossil fuels are uniquely able to provide cost-effective energy

NEWS FROM THE MIC–What the Midterm Election Results Mean for Powersports

The midterm elections will affect you, your company, and all of powersports, in the year ahead and beyond. But what should you expect in 2023?

The Republicans have taken the U.S. House of Representatives. The Democrats have increased their hold on the U.S. Senate.

Across the states there are new governors and new legislatures.

Looming are new regulations and reporting requirements for the PFAS chemicals used in many of the products we make and sell every day.

Tariffs on Chinese imports still threaten to raise prices and drop sales on parts, accessories, and apparel.

Right-to-repair bills could create huge service and warranty problems, and even lead to damage for brand reputations.

Members of the Biden cabinet will still have a tremendous impact on what happens with our nation’s highways and with public land access.

Politics matters to the bottom line for each and every company in the powersports industry. These issues matter to riders and drivers everywhere. So you will want to know what’s going on in Washington, D.C., and in states from coast to coast.

Scott Schloegel, the MIC senior vice president at the Government Relations Office just outside Washington, will be online and will summarize it all for you in one well-packed presentation that should not be missed.

LATEST CO2 COALITION ACTION–Are Carbon Taxes a Good Idea? Happer and Everett versus Hartley

The Global Warming Policy Foundation recently published a paper which argued in favor of carbon taxes as the economically optimal way to address global warming. CO2 Coalition Chairman Dr. Will Happer and Director Dr. Bruce Everett take exception to this analysis. Why carbon taxes are a bad idea. The authors conclude that CO2 has:

• no impact on human and animal health,

• a substantial positive impact on plant growth and crop yields,

• positive impacts from the modest warming observed so far, and

• no empirical support for net damages, which remain a prediction, not an observation.

It’s difficult to extract from this analysis any basis for supporting a Pigouvian tax on CO2. The United States currently emits roughly 5 billion metric tons of CO2 per year, mainly from fossil-fuel use. Despite the best hopes of climate activists, renewable energy is too costly and performance-limited to replace the fossil fuel economy.

Read the whole tamale on the CO2 Coalition Website.

HAGERTY’S 11 HOTTEST COLLECTOR PICKS INCLUDES A KNUCKLEHEAD

Welcome back to the Hagerty Bull Market List, our annual deep dive into the collector cars (and bikes) climbing the value ranks. This year, 2023, marks the sixth installment of our expert insights. Click to read past Bull Market Lists from 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.

As always, the hard part was paring down the initial list, as so many models have experienced upticks in value over the past couple of years. This year’s list contains some of last year’s leftovers, including the Toyota pickup and Harley Knucklehead, which didn’t make the cut in 2022, either because we couldn’t find a suitable example or because not enough pizza was thrown by their supporters during the intense “discussions” over the final 10.

The lesson, as always, is that if you want it, don’t wait.

1936–47 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead
Harley-Davidson Knucklehead front three-quarter action

Among the many American motorcycle manufacturers that existed before World War II, Harley-Davidson emerged a victorious survivor. It was with its first production overhead-valve motorcycle, the 1936 E/ES/EL (later known as the Knucklehead due to the shape of the valve rocker covers) that Harley sealed that victory.

With that series, the company set out to fix the problems and the dirty image of previous motorcycles, such as the side-valve models with their total-loss oil systems that dumped the black stuff on the roadway. Harley turned to overhead valves and 61 cubic inches to create a cross-country touring machine.

The Knucklehead was available in three versions from 1936 to ’38: The E, with 37 horsepower; the ES, for sidecar use; and the EL—the “hot” version—with 40 horsepower due to higher compression. When buyers saw more horsepower, they paid for it, and in 1938, Harley dropped the E model from the lineup. That makes an E Knucklehead one of the rarest and most desirable models today.

The war ended civilian production for a time, and the last of the Knuckles was produced in 1947, before the new bike, later referred to as the Panhead (the valve covers looked like pie pans) was introduced in 1948.

Throw a leg over this low and long cruiser and understand what freedom and rebellion meant when your grandfather was in knee pants. Once you get it kick-started—that can be a workout when the bike is cold or, indeed, hot—the engine does the classic potato-potato while your bottom settles into the single seat like it’s a leather diaper.

1938 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead
Highs: A solid and stolid hunk of genuine Americana; quicker than just about any car you could have from 1938; consistent youth appeal means the long-term investment prospects look bright.

Lows: No push-button start; can be as cantankerous as any 80-year-old; unfamiliar controls from before everything was standardized.

Price Range: #1 – $143,000 #2 – $101,000 #3 – $68,800 #4 – $46,600

THE OIL FILES OPENED TO LOS ANGELES

The powers in Los Angeles decided to put a moratorium on any oil production activities in Los Angeles. They can’t drill and can’t even service existing wells, which is dangerous. My Sportster riding, canyon-carving, welder friend is out of work and struggling.

We started to discuss CO2 and he mentioned that strips along the Long Beach freeway were made available to growers of all sorts years ago. The flowers, vegetables and succulents planted along the freeway flourished because of access to additional CO2.

If you need a certified welder in the LA/Long Beach, CA area, give Toby a call. 424-215-9525

THE OLD BIKE HUNT—Got a call the other day from that wild Sportster rider in Los Angeles. He ran across this. He called it a 1936 Harley. I spoke to the owner who was given this bike when he was 15 years old. He thought it was cool, but he wasn’t really a biker so he got it running, rode it to High School once and parked it for 40 years.

Then a friend came along who was more into bikes and suggested they go through it. They tore it down to the frame, had Doctor John straighten it, and they went through the driveline and put it back together. Now he wants to sell it.

I took a look and asked my resident expert, Cabana Dan to check it out. He immediately noticed the wrong wiring and there was something going on with the neck of the frame. Someone filled it in.

I asked the owner for a shot of the numbers, which started with 53G, which meant the engine came from a 1953 Servicar trike used for parking enforcement. But this is a two-wheeler, so we looked at tanks. They are ’41 to ’46 vintage. The last 45 two-wheeler was built in 1950, and the last time they used VL styled springer frontends was in 1939. Chances are the 45 could be a 1944, but when the engine blew, they replaced it with the ’53 trike engine, but that doesn’t explain the VL springer?

Dan ran across a similar parts bike and this is what he built. This would be perfect for Billy’s board track racing in Sturgis and Daytona.

Dan also has this 45 project for sale with the engine rebuild by Carl Pusser.

Let’s see what we come up with …

THE HOLIDAY BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN–IT SNOWED LAST NIGHT

We received about 2 inches of snow yesterday and

8:00 am: I made a snowman.

8:10-A feminist passed by and asked me why I didn’t make a snow woman.

8:15 – So, I made a snow woman.

8:17 – My feminist neighbor complained about the snow woman’s voluptuous chest saying it objectified women everywhere.

8:20 – The gay couple living nearby threw a hissy fit and moaned it could have been two snowmen instead.

8:22 – The transgender man.. women…person asked why I didn’t just make one snow person with detachable parts.

8:25 – The vegans at the end of the lane complained about the carrot nose, as veggies are food and are not used to decorate snow figures.

8:28 – I was being called a racist because the snow couple is white.

8:30 – I used food coloring to make one of the snow couple a different color and be more racially inclusive.

8:37 – Then accused of using a black face on the snow-person.

8:39 – The middle eastern gent across the road demanded the snow woman be completely covered.

8:40 – The police arrived saying someone had been offended.

8:42 – The feminist neighbor complained again that the broomstick of the snow woman needed to be removed because it depicted women in a domestic role.

8:43 – The ‘council on equality’ officer arrived and threatened me with eviction.

8:45 – The TV news crew from MSNBC showed up. I was asked if I know the difference between snowmen and snow-women? I replied “Snowballs” and am now a sexist.

9:00 – I was on the news as a suspected terrorist, racist, homophobe, and sensibility offender, bent on stirring up trouble during difficult weather.

9:10 – I was asked if I have any accomplices. My children were taken by social services.

9:29 – Far left protesters offended by everything marched down the street demanding that I be arrested.

9:45 – The boss called and fired me because of the negative association with work that had been all over social media.

10:00 – I cry into my drink because all I wanted to do was build a snowman…

Moral: There ain’t no moral to this story. It is what this world has become because of a bunch of snowflakes.

MORE NEWS FROM THE LAW TIGERS CREW— How to Get a Motorcycle History Report Free

You’re considering buying a used motorcycle, but you want to make sure everything is above board. Whether you’re buying from a private party or a dealer, you should still get a motorcycle history report to verify that the bike is not stolen, there’s not a lien you should know about, and everything is being represented accurately.

Instead of paying for a report, which can get expensive if you’re looking at multiple bikes, why not get one for free? It’s faster and easier to do than you might have thought possible! In this article, we’ll show you how.

Motorcycle history report

What Is in a Motorcycle History Report?
One of the most compelling reasons to review a motorcycle history report before you finalize a purchase is to confirm the bike has a clean title. The last thing you want is to end up with a stolen motorcycle, one that has a lien attached to it, or one that has significant undisclosed damage.

There are different sections to the reports, and you’ll typically find the following information:

– Ownership history

– Liens and loans

– Last odometer reading

– Market value

– Vehicle specifications (including but not limited to fuel efficiency, maintenance, and warranties)

– Other specifications (weight, engine, length and width, etc.)

– Accident history (including serious repairs)

– OEM recalls

– Whether the motorcycle was used as a taxi, rental, etc.

Get a Free Motorcycle History Report in Two Easy Steps
Thanks to modern technology, you don’t have to wait in line at the DMV and pay to acquire detailed motorcycle history reports. Using the Internet, you can now use a VIN lookup service and get these reports for free. Just follow these two quick steps, and you’re done!

STEP 1: LOCATE THE MOTORCYCLE’S VIN NUMBER.
Short for Vehicle Identification Number, the VIN is a unique identifier assigned to your bike. Think of it as the motorcycle equivalent of a Social Security Number. The only difference is that, while Social Security Numbers are nine digits, a VIN has 17 characters, consisting of both numbers and letters.

Not sure how to find your motorcycle VIN number? Though there are variations on where the VIN is, for most models, you’ll be able to find it either at the steering column base, near the cylinders, or stamped on the frame.

STEP 2: GO ONLINE.
Several websites will allow you to check your motorcycle’s VIN free of charge. Once you have the VIN, you can go to VinFreeCheck or VINCheck, enter the VIN, and you’ll get a free report that includes collision reports, detailed history records, odometer readings, real-time market pricing, and more.

If you don’t have the VIN, you can simply enter the license plate on the website and access reports from there. However, you’ll have to pay for those reports, so we recommend taking the extra couple of minutes to locate the motorcycle’s VIN before proceeding.

Free Motorcycle History Reports Versus Paid Reports
Keep in mind that obtaining a free motorcycle history report will not always give you as much information as a paid report. However, this is a great first step to getting some background information about a motorcycle and its history. You can always purchase a more comprehensive report later if you decide you are serious about buying the bike.

We like the free options because you can evaluate and compare the histories of multiple motorcycles without paying upfront research costs. Once you narrow down your selection, you can always buy a report for your top choice.

Motorcycle Knowledge is Power
Being armed with information about a motorcycle before purchasing it can save you a lot of money and heartache down the (open) road. At Law Tigers, our team is composed of passionate motorcycle readers ready to help. To learn more, visit our website or give us a call at 1-888-863-7213.

MERRY XMAS—Let’s hope our society puts the Christmas back in Xmas this coming year. They will, but they are sure taking their time.

We’ve had a major debate about wheel sizes, tires, brakes, you name it. The above wheel from the Pandemic is a 40-spoke Black Bike Wheel with a black star hub and black rim.

My chemical cabinet was damaged during the move and I needed to modify a latch to make it stay closed.

The Hamsters group wants to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. The other day someone said, “How long have you been a Hamster?” I counted. Did you know Hamsters can count? If I’m correct, it’s like 35 years.

This is my son’s ’58 Chevy in front of the famous All-Saint Tattoo Parlor in Austin where he works. Stop by, if you’re in the area.

Back to the wheels. I’m working with Black Bike Wheels on another set of black rim, black hub wheels with stainless spokes. We tried a Hydraulic mechanical rear brake. I don’t want to mess with Irish Rich’s frame design and the stock elements. We decided to go with a 19-inch, 40-spoke, but with a hub for a Sprotor brake set-up from Hawg Halters.

Here’s an odd shot looking out and in at the same time. How about a couple of snow shots. One on day two and one from day three.

Holy Shit, our neighbor stormed the door this morning and the Redhead let him in.

A portion of the digs today around noon. It’s never dull around here. My son is coming out next week with his lovely wife Erika and my granddaughter Maxine. We’re going to have big fun for Xmas.

Ride free and easy into 2023.

Bandit’s Cantina The Series: 101st episode

by K. Randall Ball with Illustrations from George Fleming and Dick Allen

Joey, running late, rode his Sportster hard up Washington Blvd heading inland. The once proud city crumbled around him with crime, grit, trash, drugs and homelessness. He darted around destitute RVs, parked and rotting in front of once active marble foyers to penthouse suites in slick high-rise buildings. The once proud city lay in trashy ruins where no one honored anything including law enforcement.

A drug addict, the needle still sticking out of his forearm stumbled into the street. Joey slammed on his drum brakes and skidded to miss the dying addict as he collapsed on the once busy and active thoroughfare. He slid sideways, dodged the dead druggie and peeled up Washington until he could see the concrete pillar, freeway overpass crossing over the wide asphalt 4-laner. He hit his rear brake again hard and leaned left under the freeway where a large area was designated for skateboard stunts.

2022 HARLEY SADDLEBAG GUARD BAGS

As I got ready to go on a short trip this weekend, I thought it might be a good time to let you know about Harley’s Saddlebag Guard Bags or Crash Bar leather storage bags.

I have been using them for many years, and when I got my new Ultra Limited it was one of the items I wanted to install.

I find them very convenient to store stuff I want to reach easily, like the kickstand pad I use often when parked on soft surfaces. With it in the Guard Bag, I can reach down and grab it without getting off the motorcycle.

Things like rolled up t-shirts, socks and underwear fit perfectly. I prefer to carry water or Gatorade in my left one as opposed to on the handlebars. Okay, you have a wide variety of choices as to what you want to put in them.

There is a right and left bag so that they fit the conture of the guard correctly.

The bags are made of sturdy synthetic leather with dual zippered openings and Velcro type closure

The bags contain an internal zippered, soft pouch perfect for smaller items.

To install the bags, remove the saddlebags and secure the leather bag to the guard with the heavy-duty snaps. I suggest putting the bottom on first and pulling up to install the snaps. It will be very tight at first and eventually loosen slightly as all leather does.

My saddlebags, the Guard Bags and the rest of the bike were finally packed, so off to enjoy my weekend. I hope you do the same.

Safe Motorcycle Riding Tips for Women

No, there isn’t a new seafaring hover-bike unveiled here. We men may be comfortable in same fixed clothing and gear on motorcycles, well-worn, tested & true. However, women have such a range of choices, they often end up selecting a two-wheeler that’s most commonly known and popular, based on their daily clothing.

Everyone is aware of female motorcycle riders in the Western nations, who can straddle a heavy Harley-Davidson or Triumph or safely manage breakdowns on restored vintage models. There are famous female motorsports professionals including record holders such as Valerie Thompson or 2022 WXC National Champion Rachael Archer from AmPro Yamaha Team.

Women in Asia however seem to be on scooters. They don’t prefer trousers as travel wear most of the week even in metroploitan cities and urban, hip joints. Sometimes, because pants look weird for them in public places. Most of the times its because they have such a wide range of ethnic and Western wear dresses that trousers are “just a stupid thing Men are stuck with at the workplace.”

I was thinking of upcoming weekend’s motorcycle trip and the women who are riding regularly and are on Royal Enfields. These are the heaviest bike you will find on most Asian roads for men and women. Only the financially wealthy or celebrity seem to have V-Twins or SBKs. Consideration is also the expense of maintenance of such big bikes and large amount of fuel it consumes.

With options and popularity of light-weight and middle-weight motorcycles gaining ground, many developing nations have found new customers for motorcycles in women population. Previously only seen on scooters, they are now more comfortable straddling the motorcycle and beating the stereotype.

While it may be common for women in North America or Europe to be seen riding a heavy bagger or land speed record prototype, women elsewhere have to deal with bad roads, congested traffic, roadside vendors and no available parking.

Here are some basic points that women aspiring to ride a motorcycle can benefit from. Get going and enjoy the thrill of the open road. Long distance riding trips is possible with modern tech and gadgets leveraging the power of information, directions, road side assistance and community development for female riders.

1. Buy the motorcycle which is right for you and not the one that your best friend is riding. Trends are great but a suitable bike does not have to be the one everyone rides.

2. Become acquainted with your motorcycle’s features, specifications, limitations and power. Don’t let it surprise you far off from home.

3. Get the mandatory and basic gear such as riding boots, gloves, eye protection. Your safety is your responsibility too.

4. Get a pre-purchase demonstration and trial ride to see if you believe in the product. It costs quite the penny, it will be with you for a long while, its something you should be able to depend on. So take trials on different models and find your match!

5. Practice in a safe setting. Take an experienced motorcycle rider along. Make sure you are not practicing on public roads and have access to first aid and other assistance. Practice makes perfect and soon it would be your second nature, with natural reflexes.

6. City riding finds everyone in a hurry. Don’t be aggressive and watch out for surprises at every corner and traffic signal. Defense is the best offense for many motorcyclists, male or female, in city rush hour. Be kind. Give pedestrians the best possible signals and horn alerts. Everyone on road may not be attentive and may even be listening to music on earphones or talking / typing on phone. So don’t let your guard down just because its the same route to college or office or marketplace.

7. If you are in touch with other women who enjoy two-wheels on a daily basis, even if not all of them have a motorcycle, form a group. Share and care about your experiences on motorcycles Vs others on a scooter.

8. Let go and give a pass to those with an ego !!! Many a times, there will be those men, women and children who feel joy and respect for a woman choosing to ride a motorcycle instead of a scooter. Sometimes you may also meet those on motorcycles or cars wanting to challenge your skills for no fault of yours. Let go but be determined. Be bold but give their fat ego a pass. The way of the two-wheeled warrior is to discourage unsafe riding rather than instigate. Your good vibes will bring support from any and all on the road.

9. There are Laws and the Unlawful. You must stay tuned to changing news about motorcycling laws and regulations in your city. For example, motorcycles may not be allowed on some expressways to allow high speed transport for larger vehicles or flyovers closed for repairs. Helmets are often mandatory and actually beneficial — they will keep your hair & skin protected from the elements apart from safe in a mishap. Yup, ask your dentist for some horror stories of motorcycle riders if you don’t believe me.

Just because the signal is green or it’s the correct lane does not mean there won’t be drivers / riders who break the signal or drive on the wrong side of the road. You may have to accommodate these unlawful fools while managing your ride to and fro. Never let anyone convince you to ride under the influence of alcohol because “there are no cops on that route” or “you only had one drink”. Treat yourself as a princess and take command of your own self and your motorcycle.

10. Often, motorcycle manufacturers include a bonus called RSA, which is Road Side Assistance, free for the first year. Whenever you face a technical problem or breakdown of your motorcycle, you will be able to call the Toll Free number to get support from the nearest registered mechanic. This can include a range of issues such as tyre puncture, empty petrol tank, battery fuse fault, even towing for a road accident.

If the motorcycle has a major fault and under warranty, they will tow your bike to the nearest Authorised Service Center. This way, you can have assured support not just in cities but most other regions within the nation.

RSA is not common for scooters but getting common with middle-weight motorcycles such as Royal Enfield, Honda CB 350, BMW G 310, KTM 390, Hero XPulse 200, etc.

Even if its not included, you can buy one from an RSA service provider. Also, for second year, if you choose a custom insurance policy, the RSA can be included in insurance renewal / modification as an add-on to the policy document.

Now get out and ride! Tell ’em Bikernet.com sent ya. Get yourself a 5-Ball Racing gear while you are planning your next adventure.

Bike-Farm Melle wins European Biker Build-Off 2022

Indian Motorcycle Dealer Bike-Farm Melle wins top spot with a nearly 3:1 voting ratio

Last weekend, during the Custom Bike Show in Bad Salzuflen, Germany, the finals of the European Biker Build-Off saw Indian Motorcycle Dealer Bike-Farm Melle gain nearly three times the votes with their Indian Chief based Longfork Chopper “Purple Haze” over Harley-Davidson Bielefeld to take the title.

First held in 2007 and the highlight of the famous Custom Bike show, the European Biker Build-Off sees two teams competing to complete their custom bike in just three days, live, under the eyes of the trade show visitors. This year’s title fight was even more exciting as both finalists come from the region, just 30km from each other: Bike-Farm, the Indian Motorcycle dealer from Melle and Reibchen + Stegemann the Harley Davidson dealer from Bielefeld.

From Friday to Sunday at noon, the creation of two extraordinary custom bikes could be followed on the show stage and by 1 pm on the Sunday, the time had come: Judgement Day. With 529 to 179 votes, nearly a 3:1 ratio, the audience chose Bike-Farm’s ‘Purple Haze’ Indian Chief chopper as the clear winner.

“A classic long fork chopper based on the 2022 Indian Chief! It’s absolutely stunning what the Bike-Farm crew has created here. This bike radically brings to flower the seeds that are at the core of the current Chief lineup: The spirit of the past combined with the technology of today.” said Ola Stenegärd, Director of Industrial Design at Indian Motorcycle. “We always had the builders in mind during development and we worked really hard to make the reimagined Indian Chief a delight to work on. So, it’s such a pleasure to see this great canvas to create motorcycle art.”

Not only has ‘Purple Haze’ been completely designed around the current air-cooled Thunderstroke 116 engine, it also still features all the electronic amenities of the original Chief Dark Horse from which it evolved: from ABS to GPS navigation, via the touchscreen of the original gauge now cantered in the revised Chieftain tank.

Other core components have also been adopted and adapted from the original bike such as the footrests and brake systems. The frame, with a full 48° rake, was manufactured by the Dutch experts VG Motorcycle Specials, and all other components are custom-made by the Bike-Farm crew: Sheet metal parts such as the tank cover with integrated gauge and GPS transmitter to the fender were created in-house just like the sissy bar, seat, wheels, handlebars, final drive, intake and exhaust system. Even the seal-less, oil-free fork with its Teflon-lubricated sliding tubes incorporating Progressive Suspension Cartridges. Finally, Lange Metallveredelung took care of the chrome surfaces, while Vossi Lackcenter Melle traditionally handled the finishing of the paint.

“The entire bike was created within just eight weeks,” as workshop manager Tristan Frische recounts. “With four men, we wrenched, shaped and turned day and night. All the more we are delighted with this title. Not only have all the electronic features been retained, but also the fully road legal, including remaining Euro 5. So, this dream bike will soon be seen quite regularly on public roads.”

In case anyone feels inspired to build their own Longfork Chief Chopper: the VG frame is available for order at Indian Motorcycle Melle, the Indian Chief, of course, at any official Indian Motorcycle dealer.

More information about the ‘Purple Haze’ and Bike Farm/Indian Motorcycle Melle can be found on www.indian-melle.de and on their social profiles at Facebook and Instagram.

Deck the Walls with Skate Deck

The world as subscribed by Michael Richardson’s art is full of Southern-fried funk, eye popping graphics, face melting illustrations, metal-flake designs, screamin’ guitars, and fast vixens.

In three words, Richardson creates, “soul-satisfying stories,” through his artistic view. And he adds a twist to his designs. His work is peppered with Easter eggs.

Easter eggs, you say? For those uninitiated, an Easter egg is a message, image, or feature hidden in art. For example, Ethan Van Sciver hid the word “sex” in the background of nearly every page of New X-Men #118 Comic Book, (November 2001).

I started writing after an earful from Bandit asking me what I had done lately? I hadn’t done anything. I’d just walked in after dropping the Sporty and wrenching my back. I told him that but Bandit gives no fucks. So, I took a Delta 8 gummy from Original Origins and sat down to write. Suddenly a creative jolt overtook me…

Mike did the inspirational trick. He is a multidisciplinary visual artist living and working in North Carolina. I met the creative one while producing the Flying Piston Benefit Builders Breakfast in Sturgis and found his art captivating. We bought his original skate deck displayed at the “Art on Deck” feature of the Flying Piston Benefit auction. Then used his deck to engage people at the charity breakfast to hold, comment, or as a tug of war. Auction attendees just loved it.

This skateboard art is a psychedelic tribute to Easyriders’ artist, David Mann. The bull skull represents Sturgis and is poking up through the pavement and ripped the tire. The chopper is coming down the highway and the rider will rescue her and load her up for the run to Sturgis. And you also see a set of eyeballs of an animal that’s hiding with the chopper flying over his head. Quite a bit of action on the skate deck.

Mike has been making art since he could hold a crayon in his little mitt. Traditional artists never resonated with him. What did resonate with him was comic books, old vinyl album covers, and skateboard art from the late ’80s, early ’90s.

He is a guitar player and grew up around family members who were really big into music. What captured his imagination and had a big impact on him was the crazy illustration located in the inside sleeve of the Guns and Roses album, Appetite for Destruction.

It turns out it was underground West Coast artist Robert Williams’ controversial painting depicting the interruption of a robot rape by an avenging metal angel. I know, Robert was out there…

As Mike looks back on his early work he can see Williams as a big influence even though he didn’t really know him or his work for many years. It turns out Williams worked for Ed “Big Daddy” Roth in the ‘60s and was big in motorcycles and Hot Rods.

Another influence was skateboarding. One cultural icon that he leaned into was Jimbo Phillips out of Santa Cruz. The old illustration design combined with that crazy Hot Rod monster style provided a lot of room for Mike to create innovative designs.

His 2nd board for the Flying Piston Benefit is a space theme one. The astro-monkey has his honey on his space chopper and it looks like he is flying away from the moon. He’s cruising out in front of this little alien dude who is super-surprised that there’s somebody else floating through his galaxy.

The alien is supposed to be the craziest thing out there, but then you’ve got this monkey, cruising through the solar system on a space chop. I think that CBD gummy altered my artistic prospective, but I wasn’t sure in which direction.

When Mike isn’t helping out the Flying Piston Benefit, he does logos, branding campaigns, illustrations for apparel companies and illustrations for bands. Significant amount of work goes into designs that get merchandised through t-shits, cups, stickers and the like. In addition, he illustrates kids books.

In 2005, Mike earned a BFA in painting and printmaking from Appalachian State University, and received an associate’s degree in graphic design and illustration from Guilford Technical Community College in 2010.

Currently, Mike is the creative force behind Rebel Soul Studio, where he uses his eccentric illustration style to create poster prints, apparel, stickers, skateboards, hand-painted custom shoes, and original paintings. Mike lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife Jennilee and their two amazing children, Olivia and Hendrix in the shell of a rusting ’59 Cadillac.
