ABATE OF ARIZONA–CALL TO ACTION SB1001 highway safety fee; repeal; VLT

There has been an overwhelming displeasure with the process of the original bill. It was our understanding at the beginning last session, that the original bill would be to rescind the VLT for alternative fuel vehicle exceptions. In fact, part of the testimony was the fact that so many large trucks, who do the most damage on our highways, are converting to alternative fuels. Obviously, that’s not what happened. And it has been obvious by the public outcry, that the setting of the fees by the ADOT Director is not something the voting population is happy about. I could give you survey results of how motorcyclists in our state feel about this legislation, but I am sure you all are too familiar with the displeasure. I’ll just leave a few numbers for you – From $35 to $99. Single mom. She has a beater car and a daily driver motorcycle to get back and forth to work. The motorcycle saves her a tremendous amount on fuel. The $64 increase is more than 2 months of her fuel costs on her bike. This is what one motorcyclist in Tucson just received and is the typical increase for a motorcyclist.     I could go on and on with examples, but I am sure you get the picture of the negative financial impact this has had. ABATE of Arizona is in favor of Senator Ugenti-Rita’s bill to repeal this absurd fee and we ask that you CALL your State Senator and ask them to urge Senate President Fann to schedule this bill for a floor vote. Also ask your Senator to vote yes so, we can have a unanimous yea vote on SB1001. Find your State Senator here:   Senator District Party Phone Sylvia Allen 6 R (602) 926-5409 Lela

8-Time Land Speed Record Holder to make first appearance at Ireland’s biggest motorcycle promotional event Scottsdale, AZ (Feb. 5, 2019) – America’s Queen of Speed, Valerie Thompson, will kick off one of Europe’s largest celebrations of two-wheel racing and cruising at the 2019 Carole Nash Irish Motorbike & Scooter Show on March 1 in Dublin. Thompson is the only woman to attempt breaking the world’s fastest motorcycle record of 376 mph and the first female to exceed 300 mph in a two-wheeled streamliner. She set a new land speed record of 328.467 mph (528.616 km/h) at the DLRA Speed Week competition and survived a horrific 363 mph crash days later during the World Speed Trials in early 2018. “This will be my first visit to the Emerald Isle, and I can’t wait to get there. I’m looking forward to opening the Carole Nash Irish Motorbike and Scooter Show, especially as Ruth Lemass, the event organizer, has convinced me this event is one of Ireland’s biggest and most fun motorcycle celebrations,” said Thompson. “I hope to test drive some of the new 2019 models and experience Ireland’s beautiful cruising roads,” added Thompson. Thompson holds eight land speed records on a variety of bikes ranging from Harley-Davidsons to BMWs to Streamliners. She is a member of seven different land speed racing 200 MPH Clubs, one 300 MPH Club and is the only motorcycle racer ever featured in a Super Bowl commercial. “Valerie’s many land speed accomplishments have always impressed me and I’m definitely one of her biggest fans,” stated Ruth Lemass.  “I’ve been following Valerie’s amazing career over the past three years and I’m so pleased she has agreed to attend our event as the World’s Fastest Female on a motorbike – a world class achievement,” added Lemass. CUSTOM CYCLE ENGINEERING TO THE RESCUE–BIKERNET TECH

Frank and Frankie loaded the wrecked bike and delivered it back to the Bikernet Headquarters, where we started to wait for the repaired Spitfire girder. Unfortunately, it never arrived, and Frankie’s mom and bike building boyfriend, Domenic, pushed him to replace it with a glide. I didn’t like the notion of a glide for this bike and wanted to give Paul a shot to straighten it out. But ultimately, we started to look around and discussed it with Tim at Custom Cycle Engineering. Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki Go 1-2 In San Diego As Cianciarulo Takes Over Points Lead

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (February 3, 2019) – Adam Cianciarulo and Garrett Marchbanks made it a Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki 1-2 inside a rain-soaked Petco Park with Cianciarulo getting his third win and the rookie Marchbanks getting his first career podium in second. The win propelled Cianciarulo into the points lead as the Western Regional riders head into a four-week break. Marchbanks broke back into the top-10 and sits eighth in the championship standings. The story to start the day might have been about the rain, but by the end of the night it was all about Cianciarulo. After scoring second in his heat race, Cianciarulo rounded the first turn of the main event out front to take his second holeshot of the season. He quickly was gapping the field as the rest of the riders struggled to keep it on two wheels. Cianciarulo had a comfortable lead as he crossed the checkered flag of the shortened race eight seconds ahead of his teammate Marchbanks to claim his ninth career supercross win. “This feels so good because the mud brings in added stress and you never know what will happen,” said Cianciarulo. “I just visualized the win, getting through the first turn first and focused on staying in control. My team made a great call going to the Dunlop paddle tire and it helped get me out front. I’ve never won two in a row before so that feels great.” Marchbanks showed his speed early with a third in the only timed qualifying practice. After finishing 17th in his heat, Marchbanks was forced to go to his first LCQ where he took the win. The extra track time seemed to help keep Marchbanks comfortable and confident for the main event. He started in the top five and kept pushing toward

34,709 Recent Crimes Committed by Illegal Aliens: Where’s the News Coverage?

By Kumar Balani There were 34,709 crimes of various types committed by illegal aliens in fiscal years 2016, 2017 and the 11 months of 2018, according to the United States Customs and Border Patrol or CBP, one of the seven components of the Department of Homeland Security. While the largest number of crimes – more than fifteen thousand or 44 percent of the arrests and convictions of illegal aliens – were for unlawful entry or reentry, all the other crimes – 19,510 offenses or 56 percent – caused financial, medical, physical, psychological or sexual harm, impairment, or damage to the hapless victims, or led to their deaths.  This includes crimes such as ‘driving under the influence’ of alcohol or drugs or narcotics, or the possession, trafficking, and transport of deadly weapons and drugs – that resulted in, or had the potential to result in harm to or death of people. The range of crime types during this three-year period was so wide that almost 5,700 or one of every six crimes were placed under the category of ‘other’. Needless to say, these ‘other’ un-categorized crimes may also have caused bodily harm. The United States provides means for people who entered it, to adjust their illegal status to legal, temporary-stay nonimmigrant visa status for various purposes, such as business, study, or tourism. Before the expiration of any of these visas, the nonimmigrant visa holder, with the assistance of a practicing attorney on immigration law, can apply for permanent residence, if eligible. Conviction for crimes makes it more difficult. Biz India Online News conducted extensive research to find coverage of these crimes on the websites of major news media in the United States, from June 2016 when the campaigns for the US presidency were in full swing, through January 2019, and concluded

LATEST REPORT FROM THE NMA– Are Cyclists Vision Zero Zealots—Readers’ Responses:

Last week, we emailed and posted on our website a guest newsletter entitled Are Cyclists Vision Zero Zealots? written by Eric Berg, an NMA Board Member, an NMA Life Member, an avid sport bicyclist, and a staunch defender of motorists’ rights. Readers, including some of whom (like Eric) are bicyclists, responded with interesting perspectives which follow.   Eric Berg is certainly correct when he states that these issues are usually not black and white. I suspect that’s particularly true even within groups like the Washington Area Bicyclists’ Association, to which I belonged most of the years I lived in that city, and Mass Bike, to which I now belong.   I’m a leisure/commuter cyclist (and a long-ago veteran of a Seattle to Boston ride). I’m very much opposed to efforts to discourage driving, notably the 25 mph speed limits that have sprung up all over Boston and other metro areas. (I would note that Washington DC now has speed bumps in neighborhoods all over the city.) If these laws were enforced (so far as I can tell, they are not enforced in the Boston area, but I am uncertain about that) they would increase stop and go traffic, since reducing speeds means more cars will be on the road at any given time, and the increasing traffic density will cause traffic snarls.   As for Vision Zero, this idealistic campaign ignores the law of diminishing returns. A better way to reduce fatalities and maimings–both laudable goals–would be to ban use of electronics and infotainment in moving vehicles.   I don’t ride on streets nearly as much as I used to–I rode 3,600 miles annually during the 1980s and early ’90s─because I’m especially afraid of people texting. I am lucky to live very close to bicycle paths that take me
