Harley-Davidson White Sox Is What a $5,000 Makeover Does to a Street Bob

by Daniel Patrascu from https://www.autoevolution.com The name White Sox has been linked to the Chicago-based baseball team for more than a century. So tied is this name to the club that you almost never get to see it used on anything or for anything else. At least in America. In Germany, on the other hand, the term White Sox is not such a resounding one. There, as in most of Europe for that matter, baseball is almost non-existent, so when speaking of White Sox people there usually mean just that: white stockings. Or, in the case of custom motorcycle garage Thunderbike, the term means whitewall tires for one of their latest products. Having started off as a Street Bob, the build was christened White Sox not because of an imaginary connection with the baseball club from across the ocean, but because its wheels are wrapped in whitewall tires, designed this way as a tribute to the “bobber look of the ‘50s.” The overall design of the bike follows the usual language of the German shop. The blackness of the build is offset by the said white on the tires, but also on the fuel tank, where the Harley-Davidson lettering was specced in this color. The Street Bob now has an entirely new stance compared to stock. That is partially due to the remade rear end, the new seat, new fenders, and a lowering kit that brings the height of the bike down by 30 mm. As usual, Thunderbike does not say what exact changes it made to the Milwaukee-Eight that powers the two-wheeler. The only thing we are informed about is that the powerplant now breathes through a Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde exhaust system. As for the cost of the build, no official figure was announced. The parts listed as used on the motorcycle amount to a total of around 4,400 euros ($5,200), but that does not include the exhaust system, labor, and of course the base bike itself.

THE SALT TORPEDO BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for October 29th, 2020

Hey,

The weather is rapidly changing. The election is almost over and I hope everyone voted. Next week will be damn exciting. I have confidence in America and as you know, in freedom.

Here’s the really good, positive news from the Bikernet Headquarters in Wilmington, California. We may have a plan for moving some unwanted staff members to Deadwood and keeping the Wilmington fort. That’s not the news.

Micah McCloskey came from the valley to the coast on Sunday, when the traffic is nil around the Port. With the help of Zack and Gearhead, we lifted the Salt Torpedo off the lift and set it on the deck. Micah guided it into the backyard and fired it to life. The JIMS engine sounds magnificent with the exhaust system build partially by Bub and partially by me and San Pedro muffler. It was recently repaired after we rolled the torpedo during a test run.

Zack jumped on his Sportster, which we recently rewired and repaired and prepared to pace the Torpedo on it’s first handling test. Mike Stevenson and I recently did our damnest to align the Torpedo after the new front axle was installed, and the wheels repaired. Paughco also built us a new gas tank.

I installed the bottom of the belly tank last week in hopes that our test would be successful and we could prepare for a speed run, maybe in the desert. Micah assured me that he would take it easy on his first pass down Harry Bridges, the largest thoroughfare leading in and out of the Port of LA.

It sprinkled in the morning, the first rain of the season, so the worn asphalt was slick. Micah followed the code and took it slow for the first couple of blocks. With Zack pacing him he slipped along the wide boulevard and then turned right for the return pass. I stood in the street to watch the Torpedo heading back towards the shop. It seemed to be tracking straight.

Micah was positive but wanted to let the street dry, so he could make one more pass and hit some speed over 50 mph. We waited and shot the shit in the shop. The sun threatened over the harbor and dried the cracking asphalt.

More confident, Micah slipped under the canopy with his race helmet on and fired the JIMS 135 Twin Cam to life. He popped over the gate railing, into the street with Zack beside him and blasted down the street. He was back in a flash and again seemed to track perfectly. He blasted into the shop with his gloved thumb held high.

Sometime today, I’m going to make a call about a speed run in the desert. Let’s hit the news.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY
October 29, 1929

Stock market crashes on Black Tuesday
Black Tuesday hits Wall Street as investors trade 16,410,030 shares on the New York Stock Exchange in a single day. Billions of dollars were lost, wiping out thousands of investors, and stock tickers ran hours behind because the machinery could not handle the tremendous volume of trading. In the aftermath of Black Tuesday America and the rest of the industrialized world spiraled downward into the Great Depression.

During the 1920s, the U.S. stock market underwent rapid expansion, reaching its peak in August 1929, a period of wild speculation. By then, production had already declined and unemployment had risen, leaving stocks in great excess of their real value. Among the other causes of the eventual market collapse were low wages, the proliferation of debt, a weak agriculture, and an excess of large bank loans that could not be liquidated.

BLACK TECHNICIANS AT HARLEY–
I read the story on Paris McGowan it very uplifting to see another woman in the field but the story is Incorrect she is not the first female black technician at Harley-Davidson she is actually the third.

To explain why I said she is third with the history behind my statement along with the details of the 2 women before her. I am not discrediting her accomplishment but the lack of research to claim she is the first is a total discredit to the two ladies before her.

The first black Lady is named Alisha Healy she is a Master Technician of the Rubber City Harley-Division in Ohio she has been in the position as Master Tech for 9 years and was featured in the magazine Harley’s University Shop Talk Magazine article Women on the Rise 2018. She talks about her struggle and determination to be in a field dominated by men and an inspiration to other women in general.

The second black lady who is not only Black but Hispanic is Selena Terrazas she is 25 years old she graduated from Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix AZ in November of 2017 specializing in Harleys Davidson motorcycles. Her first position was with Top Rocker Harley-Davidson in Canoga Park Ca for a 1 and 1/2 year she now has moved to Harley- Davidson of Santa Clarita and has been there 1 year with advancement training to be completed at MMI again to become an Advanced Technician her current career time is 2 1/2 years. She is known around the dealers in California and Harleys Master Techs as the first women they have worked with in California under Harley in the past 30 years.

Please understand that an article that showcases women of color should be correct since there are other women in the field that may not be known to the author but substantial researched should be done to give credit to all women.

In conclusion, I am the mother of Selena Terrazas and I am extremely proud she is in her career and has encouraged her to be independent and strong in the world where men dominate a field. As I am the only Black female in my company who is a Property Inspector in a male-dominated field of working with Commerical, Residential, New Construction housing for investors in the Southern California Region and out of state properties.

As a woman of color, I pride myself and my children to excel and take on positions that challenged the mind. I commend the article showcasing Paris Mcgowan but not the statement she is the first, that should go to Alisha Healy then followed by my daughter Selena Terrazas and Paris McGowan who have broken barriers in Harley as black female technicians.

Sincerely

UNDISPUTED: INDIAN CHALLENGER OFFICIALLY BECOMES “KING OF THE BAGGERS” WITH DRAMATIC VICTORY AT LAGUNA SECA

Inaugural Bagger Road Race Sees Indian Challengers Claim Two of Three Podium Spots as Road Racer Tyler O’Hara Takes the Victory on the S&S Cycle Indian Challenger & Frankie Garcia Takes Third Place on the Roland Sands Design Indian Challenger

MINNEAPOLIS (October 27, 2020) – Indian Motorcycle, America’s First Motorcycle Company, added to its racing legacy with a historic win at the inaugural Drag Specialties King of the Baggers invitational at Laguna Seca Raceway.

Facing a field of 11 Harley-Davidsons, the S&S Cycle Indian Challenger, piloted by highly decorated motorcycle racing Champion Tyler O’Hara, captured the win, while veteran rider Frankie Garcia put his Roland Sands Design Indian Challenger on the box with a third-place finish. Claiming two out of three podium positions, the Indian Challenger dramatically showcased its superiority on one of road-racing’s most iconic and technical tracks.

The historic race played out in truly dramatic fashion. Barely, 24-hours after an accident where he “looped” his 600-lb. machine during qualifying, Frankie Garcia rebounded taking the holeshot.

But it was O’Hara who immediately established a commanding lead through the first three laps. With five laps remaining, an off-track mishap sent O’Hara back to third and Garcia to second, allowing veteran rider Hayden Gillim to take the lead. From there, O’Hara began a patient, methodical comeback, working his way past Garcia and dramatically passing Gillim while diving into the famed “corkscrew” during the penultimate lap. O’Hara held strong for the final lap winning the inaugural race by 1.9 seconds and earning the title “King of the Baggers.”

“It’s an incredible honor for us to race on this historic track at this historic event, against a field of incredibly talented teams and riders, and we’re absolutely thrilled to come away victorious,” said Gary Gray, Vice President – Racing, Technology and Service for Indian Motorcycle. “Tyler, Frankie and the S&S Cycle and RSD teams did an incredible job and ultimately, they were able to show the world just how special the Indian Challenger is. We couldn’t be more proud of them or our bike.”

Race fans witnessed history, as the inaugural King of the Baggers reached social media viewers in record numbers – recording over two million views and more than 30,000 Facebook shares.

“Watching 13 baggers carving through Laguna Seca’s famed “Corkscrew” was a special moment in motorcycle racing,” said Reid Wilson, Vice President for Indian Motorcycle. “That said, watching the new Indian Challenger defeat 11 highly-modified Harley Davidsons was a monumental achievement and dramatic validation for the work our product designers and engineers have put into developing the Indian Challenger.”

The inaugural King of the Baggers race could not have been more appropriately timed for the Indian Challenger. In a year that saw Indian Motorcycle introduce the new bagger with the Challenger Challenge – a dealer test-ride program that invited riders to compare the Indian Challenger head-to-head against the Harley-Davidson® Road Glide® Special – the inaugural race created a dramatic extension of the marketing program in a full-fledged competitive racing format.

The victory at “King of the Baggers” also came on the heels of Indian Motorcycle Racing earning its fourth consecutive Grand National Championship and Manufacturer’s Championship in the American Flat Track racing series.

Biker Calls for Community Support to Win Custom Bike Build on Popular TV Show

Local biker makes an appeal for votes to bring attention to his cause.

Orange County Choppers is giving away an opportunity to build a custom chopper to the fan with the most votes. The show’s main character and owner of Orange County Choppers Paul Teutul Sr. wants to give one lucky bike enthusiast the opportunity of a lifetime.

World of Soul Motorcycle Community’s founder Terry Hardy wants you to vote for him.

The winner will receive a custom dream bike built entirely from scratch. This year’s winner will also join Paul Teutul Sr. and the Orange County Choppers crew on an upcoming episode and receive their very own feature on the cover of Cycle Source Magazine!

Terry is a community advocate who is involved in encouraging bikers to surface on the issue of education, primarily exposing students to Historically Black Colleges and Universities through a college tour experience.

“Fifteen years ago, I found my passion in motorcycling and using it as a platform to help students get to and through college.

My most recent motorcycle’s engine failed me. I have struggled to get back behind the throttle under the circumstances; an over $45,000 expense. A new motorcycle is necessary to reach riders where they are locally, regionally and nationally to garner attention and support.

I want the exposure of a custom-build featured on the Orange County Choppers show.

To have a bike built by a national icon such as Paul Teutul Sr. and be featured on the cover of a magazine would be good, not only for me, but for Chicago also as we move forward a major campaign to support students with their pursuit of a post-secondary education.

I would take the motorcycle to major rallies and at as many motorcycle industry trade shows our budget would allow. I would take it to various high schools and college campuses as part of our promotion to support the motorcycle community’s role in education.”

Vote for Terry Hardy at https://dreamchopper.com/2020/terry-hardy-2 today and every day until voting for the top 15 candidates ends Thursday the 5th of November at 11PM EST.

JUST IN FROM THE FACTORY–Harley-Davidson officially spins off new electric bicycle company with stunning first model

This is it. Harley-Davidson has been teasing us with the prospect of their own in-house electric bicycles for over two years. And today the bar-and-shield motorcycle manufacturer has finally announced its new dedicated electric bicycle brand known as Serial 1 Cycle Company.

The brand’s name is an homage to the very first motorcycle ever built by Harley-Davidson in 1903, named “Serial Number One.”

Back then, motorcycles were essentially just bicycles with a small engine placed in front of the pedals.

And so it is fitting that the company’s first electric bicycle is a nod to that very first H-D motorcycle. Check out both in the video below to see how well they nailed the tribute.

As Serial 1 Cycle Company’s brand director Aaron Frank explained in a statement provided to Electrek:

When Harley-Davidson first put power to two wheels in 1903, it changed how the world moved, forever. Inspired by the entrepreneurial vision of Harley-Davidson’s founders, we hope to once again change how cyclists and the cycling-curious move around their world with a Serial 1 eBicycle.

The new e-bike brand from H-D actually began life as a skunkworks project in Harley-Davidson’s Product Development Center.

As the company explained, they began with “a small group of passionate motorcycle and bicycle enthusiasts working with a single focus to design and develop an eBicycle worthy of the Harley-Davidson name.”

Ultimately, they decided along with H-D to spin off the brand into a dedicated electric bicycle company that could focus purely on delivering a premium e-bike product and experience.

In addition to Aaron Frank, other major players from H-D’s in-house e-bike program that made the jump to Serial 1 Cycle Company include Jason Huntsman, president; Ben Lund, vice president; and Hannah Altenburg, lead brand marketing specialist.

The Woman Marine Pilot

The teacher gave her 5 th grade class an assignment: Get their parents to tell them a story with a moral at the end of it.
The next day, the kids came back and, one by one, began to tell their stories.
There were all the regular types of stuff… spilled milk, pennies saved, etc.
But then the teacher realized, much to her dismay, that only Janie was left.
Janie, she asked, “Do you have a story to share?”

‘Yes, ma’am. My daddy told me a story about my Mommy. She was a Marine pilot in Desert Storm, & her plane got hit.

She had to bail out over enemy territory, & all she had was a flask of whiskey, a pistol & a survival knife.

She drank the whiskey on the way down so the bottle wouldn’t break, & then her parachute landed her right in the middle of 20 Iraqi troops.

She shot 15 of them with the pistol, until she ran out of bullets, killed four more with the knife, till the blade broke & then she killed the last Iraqi with her bare hands’.

‘Good Heavens,’ said the horrified teacher. ‘What did your Daddy tell you was the moral to this horrible story?

‘He said to stay away from Mommy when she’s been drinking.’

NEW OLD FROM THE NATIONA MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM--1974 Triumph TR5T Trophy Trail. By 1973 two-stroke powered motorcycles dominated off-road competition of all types. Yet in 1972, Triumph Corporation, USA decided to field an ISDE team of three riders on their 500cc twin, the TR5 Trophy Trail. This was late in the life of the traditional British motorcycle. Frames were iron lugged with steel tubing, suspension travel minimum and true weight near 400 pounds. Yet a group of riders skilled at handling these big machines did well in international competition.

The International Six Days Enduro is a traditional event held annually at various points on the globe since 1913. With no cooperation from the Triumph factory, project manager Bob Tryon and six techs in their southern California shop, reworked six freshly uncrated stock machines. With a combination of after-market and custom fabricated parts they built one bike, thoroughly tested and perfected it, went about completing six total and headed for Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the site of the 1973 ISDE. Dave Mungenast, John Greenrose and Ken Harvey each finished this grueling enduro with silver medals, a great accomplishment made greater when considering the dated technical status of their machines.

According to the Triumph Factory Records only a total of 921 TR5T’s were made in 1974 with 759 of them shipped to the United States. The TR5T was touted as an ‘off road’ bike, and the majority (634) were shipped to the East coast Distributor Triumph Corporation in Baltimore. The other 125 were shipped to the West coast Distributor, Johnson Motors. Perhaps that split was because the bike made a great name for itself in the East due to its performance in the 1973 ISDT held that year in Massachusetts, or the West coast riders were riding Bultacos, Huskys, Maicos, Pentons, even Hondas by then.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE MOTORCYCLE SHOWS THE THRILLS OF DRAG RACING’S FUTURE IN “SCIENCE OF SPEED”–Watch Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Drag Racing Team Launch into the Future

MILWAUKEE (October 29, 2020) – See what it takes to win in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship and the future of drag racing with the 10-time champion Harley-Davidson™ Screamin’ Eagle™/Vance & Hines drag racing team in Harley-Davidson’s latest production “Science of Speed.” Team racers Eddie Krawiec, Andrew Hines, and Angelle Sampey talk through the skills, strategies, and experience of running a motorcycle through the quarter-mile dragstrip.

“Science of Speed” looks at how electric vehicle propulsion will change the sport of drag racing by comparing a 2020 Harley-Davidson FXDR motorcycle to a 2020 Harley-Davidson LiveWire™ motorcycle. With the LiveWire motorcycle’s immediate torque and seamless twist-and-go acceleration, the racers are immediately aware of what the future of fast can bring: more time for preparation before launch; thrilling, instant acceleration; and seamless speed to the finish line.

“Let me tell you what’s amazing,” said Sampey. “That was the first time I rode the LiveWire. I could not wait to get it on the track. The LiveWire is so easy to ride. Just twist the throttle and go – and you really go!”

On September 4, 2020, Sampey, a three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, set new records for elapsed time and top speed by an electric-powered production motorcycle with the LiveWire on a drag racing course. She stepped off her Harley-Davidson FXDR™ Pro Stock competition motorcycle to pilot the LiveWire bike to capture world record-breaking runs on the quarter and eighth-mile, covering the eighth-mile distance in 7.017-seconds and the full quarter-mile course in just 11.156 seconds at 110.35 mph. The 2020 LiveWire motorcycle’s top speed is limited to 110 mph.

The Harley-Davidson LiveWire motorcycle is an all-new, all-electric model designed to offer riders a thrilling and high-performance motorcycling experience infused with a new level of technology, and the premium look and feel of a Harley-Davidson product. The LiveWire motorcycle is capable of rapid acceleration with just a twist of the throttle – no clutching or gear shifting required.

The instant torque provided by the H-D Revelation™ powertrain delivers exhilarating acceleration from a stop; the LiveWire motorcycle can rush from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 100 kph) in 3.0 seconds and 60 to 80 mph (100 to 129 kph) in 1.9 seconds. Because maximum torque is always on tap, roll-on acceleration for passing is outstanding. An optimized center of gravity, rigid aluminum frame and premium adjustable suspension components give the LiveWire motorcycle dynamic handling. With up to 146 miles of range (city)*, performance is optimized for the urban street-rider.

The H-D Revelation™ electric powertrain produces minimal vibration, heat, and sound, all of which enhance rider comfort and creates a unique riding experience, even on the drag strip.

Licensed riders can take a complimentary test ride and feel the performance themselves on the LiveWire motorcycle at select EV Authorized LiveWire Harley-Davidson dealerships in the United States, Australia, Canada and most European countries.

*Estimated riding range: 146 miles (city) / 95 miles (combined). Riding range estimates provided following SAE J2982 Riding Range Test Procedure and are based on expected performance of a fully-charged battery when operated under specified conditions. Actual range will vary depending on riding habits, ambient weather and equipment conditions.

Funny at the time we are dealing with these things, we never think years down the road, when we will still go over them?

BIKERNET BOOK OF THE WEEK CLUB–Chevrolet ½-ton C/K-Series Pickup Trucks 1973-1987 – “Built to Stay Tough”
Norm Mort

Taking a slightly different angle to ‘open top’ motoring, Norm Mort’s latest book takes a look at the Chevrolet C/K-series ½-ton pickup trucks, the trucks “Built to Stay Tough.”

This new book from our Those were the days … ™ series covers the 3rd generation C/K series, and includes specifications, model option details, and explains the market forces that influenced the pickup’s evolution. The book includes rare cutaways, previously unpublished photos, and some great examples of restored and customized vehicles.

Following a brief history of Chevrolet’s building of the corporation’s ½-ton pickup trucks, the book takes an extensive look at Chevrolet’s ½-ton C/K-Series pickup trucks, with emphasis on the all-new model, followed by a year-by-year description of the evolving 1970s models, and the various market demands that often led to the introduction of niche models to broaden market base.

Chevrolet reacted to a changing marketplace that included a greater interest in 4WD, while being detoured by fuel shortages, ever-changing fuel economy and pollution regulations, and the constant quest to reduce overall weight.

Paperback • 7.48×7.97in (19×20.5cm) • 96 pages • 112 pictures

Chevrolet ½-ton C/K-Series Pickup Trucks 1973-1987 – “Built to Stay Tough” costs $25 US (£15.99, $32.99) and is available now.

CLIMATE AT A GLANCE REPORTS— Livestock and Methane

Bullet-Point Summary:

American ranchers and meat consumption have virtually no impact on overall greenhouse gas emissions or climate.
EPA reports cattle and beef account for just 2% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.
EPA reports all livestock account for less than 4% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.
By contrast, crop production accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than total livestock production.

Short Summary:

Climate activists, many of whom are vegans for other reasons, often claim that ranchers, livestock, and meat production are a leading cause of rising greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), however, has compiled information on greenhouse gas emissions by source. According to EPA, beef production accounts for just 2% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, while livestock production as a whole, accounts for less than 4% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. By contrast, agricultural crop production accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than total livestock production. This is the case even though the United States leads the world in beef production.

The primary manner in which livestock impacts greenhouse gas emissions is through methane released when livestock burp or pass gas. Yet, this is clearly not a growing problem, as U.S. methane emissions actually declined between 1990 and 2018, according to data compiled by the EPA.

And with the smaller 1-inch design I was able to wrap the manifolds with sharp bends around the primary tubes fairly easily. Of course, it would be a lot easier to do this with the manifolds off of the car and I highly recommend removing them to wrap them. However, I gave it shot with them still on the vehicle.

Before I started I devised a plan of attack. I started with the first primary tube and wrapped it down to the main collector and past the second primary. For this, I wrapped one complete revolution around the primary tube, then removed the wrap and folded it over itself. Then I could gauge how much wrap I needed by overlapping the folded over portion working my way down the tube without actually wrapping it. That way I wasn’t feeding 50-feet of wrap through a small area. Once I cut the length of wrap I needed to start I secured the top of the wrap by the head using Speedway Motors stainless steel exhaust wrap ties, part number 91560014 in 14-inch length. To secure this style of tie you feed the length through the head just like a normal zip tie.

Stainless Steel exhaust wrap ties

However, the head on these don’t have a clip and the length of the tie is smooth. So you pull it tight onto itself and cut the excess off. I then used a pair of needle-nose pliers to roll the end over on itself up to the head of the tie to secure it tightly and not leave any sharp edges to catch on.

securing exhaust wrap tie

With the first primary tube wrapped I moved to the second and repeated the process until the entire exhaust manifold was covered. This was fairly easy to accomplish with the exhaust manifold still on the car and leaning over the fender. But as I stated earlier it would be a whole lot simpler to wrap the exhaust manifold off the vehicle and re-install.

I did extend the wrap all the way down the downpipe on my exhaust as well utilizing 50-feet of wrap per side. With both sides done I noticed a considerable difference in heat exposure versus the unwrapped manifold. This resulted in dropping my underhood temperatures and keeping my Big Block Chevy running cooler. It also gave my vehicle that old school performance look and covers up a pretty unsightly cast iron manifold.

QUEEN OF NOWHERE–Before I met Jenny, all I wanted to do was meet Jenny. She was my first and only Instagram idol. The minute I got Instagram in 2013, the first people I followed were girls that rode bikes. There were only about 4 of them that were continually posting being on bikes, going on rides, and just having a cool biker attitude and style. I hadn’t owned a Harley yet and thought that these girls were so strong and badass on their big bikes.

Jenny was out there with her sparkle panties, a line of colorful sequined panties that she and all her friends wore on their motorcycle trips, traveling all over the West Coast. I was so jealous of their lives and thought their crew was so amazing. I hadn’t had any other women to ride with yet.

After following Jenny and her crew for some time, I eventually met them. Back then, there really weren’t many women riding and posting about it on Instagram, so friendships were easy to make. There was a biker party down in LA and I went up and introduced myself to them and since then, it’s history! We have traveled together in Utah, rode around the Oregon Coast, frolicked many many consecutive Falls in Joshua Tree, and even collaborated with her brand Strange Vacation.

Jenny is an extremely spiritual individual and we’ve had some really big talks at very big times in both our lives. She was the first person to visit me at my first home in California and I saw her off in her Sprinter van in Canada which she lived in for over a year.

KRAWIEC LAUNCHES HARLEY TO PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE WIN IN HOUSTON–Krawiec Jumps to Second Place and Title Contention at Finals Next Weekend

HOUSTON, Texas (October 26, 2020) – Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec battled to a Pro Stock Motorcycle victory at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park on Sunday. The win moves Krawiec into contention for his fifth NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship with one event remaining on the 2020 schedule.

The victory in Houston ended a long drought for Krawiec, who last won a Pro Stock Motorcycle final at Brainerd International Raceway in 2018, despite nine subsequent final-round appearances and a string of strong qualifying performances this season.

“Pro Stock Motorcycle is so competitive right now. You can never take winning for granted,” said Krawiec. “We have strong Harley-Davidson motorcycles and a great team. I feel we always come prepared to lead the class, but sometimes there’s some luck involved. Today things went my way.”

The Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team races competition Pro Stock drag bikes inspired by the Harley-Davidson® FXDR™ 114, a high-performance cruiser based on the Softail® platform that combines the unrelenting power of the Milwaukee-Eight® 114 engine with the liberal use of new weight-saving aluminum and composite components to amplify every aspect of performance.

Krawiec qualified third for the Houston finals with a best elapsed time (ET) of 6.799 seconds. In Sunday eliminations, Krawiec defeated Michael Phillips in the first round, got a win in round two when Jerry Savoie did not make the start, and defeated Hector Arana Jr. in round three to advance to the final against Ryan Oehler. Krawiec posted his quickest run of the day in the final, a 6.801 ET to best Oehler’s time of 6.905. Krawiec now has won 48 Pro Stock Motorcycle finals in 85 appearances.

Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines teammates Angelle Sampey and Andrew Hines also qualified for eliminations at Houston. Sampey was the number 2 qualifier at 6.789 seconds, and lost in the first round on Sunday. Hines, the defending Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, qualified fifth at 6.811 seconds and lost in round two.

Krawiec leaves Houston with 504 points, tied with Scotty Pollacheck for second place in the Pro Stock Motorcycle standings and 78 points behind first place Matt Smith. Hines is in fourth place 496 points, 86 points out of the lead. Sampey is in fifth place with 447 points. The final race awards “points-and-a-half” so Krawiec and Hines have a shot at catching Smith.

The Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines drag racing team will close out the 2020 season Oct. 30 – Nov. 3 at the Dodge NHRA Finals presented by Pennzoil at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nev.

BIKERNET BLOG COMMENT FROM A READER–
Just read the blog about Mr. McCarvel’s good fortune at having a long-lost bike show up out of the blue.

Made me think back when my ‘49 pan was stolen. It was in a shop and coming along. It had a brown over silver metal flake with ribbons on a coffin tank ( 70’s ). 21 front on a 4 over girder front end.

The owner of the shop, as I understood it, got into some money trouble with a local bike club in Massachusetts in the Bellingham area and the end result was they took his shop along with the bikes being worked on as payment.

I tried in vain to try and get it back. I understand the sense of loss and I am happy that McCarvel was able to get his machine back. Once in a while a feel–good story is a good thing.

EMERGENCY COVID BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY OPEN—NO MASKS…

This is a sad story of the depression that can haunt a snowflake.

Marcel was sick and tired of the world; of Covid 19, Brexit, Russian belligerence, global warming, racial tensions, and the rest of the disturbing stories that occupy media headlines.

Marcel drove his car into his garage and then sealed every doorway and window as best he could. He got back into his car and wound down all the windows, selected his favorite radio station and hit the cars ignition.

Four days later, a worried neighbor peered through his garage window and saw him in the car. She notified the emergency services and they broke in, pulling Marcel from the car. A little sip of water and, surprisingly, he was in perfect condition, but his Tesla had a dead battery.

AHDRA race coverage/pre-race report

AHDRA motorcycle drag racing series race coverage/pre-race report

recent event: AHDRA’s MTC Engineering Sunshine Nationals

when: October 17-18, 2020

where: Orlando Speed World, Bithlo, Florida, USA

next event: AHDRA’s MTC Engineering World Finals

when: November 6-8, 2020

where: Gainesville Raceway, Florida, USA

AHDRA Nitro Keeping the Florida Autumn Blazing Hot!

All-American motorcycle drag racing series AHDRA is keeping it hot with some serious action in the Sunshine State. October 17-18 saw AHDRA’s MTC Engineering Sunshine Nationals at Florida’s Orlando Speed World, which will be followed up by the MTC Engineering World Finals at legendary Gainesville Raceway on November 6-8.

The Orlando race apparently generated enough heat to set off Sunday showers that rained out all of eliminations other than Saturday, when some serious qualifying and eliminator action threw down under partly cloudy skies.

The Pro Dragster class was so enthusiastic that they alone lobbied to run their Orlando eliminations during Gainesville qualifying. Jim Martin qualified number one in the carbureted nitro class with a 7.312 at 170.17 mph, leading a very tight field that saw Florida’s own Preston “President” Bartlett qualify number two with a 7.370 at 174, Atlanta number one qualifier Sam White third at 7.374 at 162, and veteran Rocky Jackson fourth with a 7.57 at 164.

Add in racers expected to come to Gainesville—studs like Tyler Wilson, Michael Ray, Chaz Kennedy—and plan on big action in the small displacement class.

There’s nothing small about Top Fuel, which outdrew NHRA’s seven-bike Dallas field by one. Numidia winner and NHRA Top Fuel Harley record holder Bob “Opie” Malloy qualified number one in Orlando with a blistering 6.29 at 214 mph on his iconic, high-gear only, nitro Buell.

Atlanta number one qualifier Tracy “Bad Apple” Kile was number two in Orlando with a 6.51 run early in the day before slapping the wall on his pipe side in the third round. Kile—whose bike made a hard move due to a bad tire soon out of the gate—was uninjured and the bike repaired in time to race on Sunday.

Kile wasn’t the only TF rider to contact Orlando’s concrete, as Floridian Don Becker scraped the opposite wall as Tracy and much further down the track. Becker qualified seventh, and he and Kile were slated to meet in the round one that never happened.

Cordova winner Rich Vreeland qualified third with a 6.77 and was laddered to meet Jim McMillan, who qualified sixth and represented himself well in his first-ever nitro outing.

Rocky Jackson doesn’t just race the little bikes, he qualified fourth in TF and was paired with Armon Furr. Malloy was to face Larry “Grey Ghost” Stanley.

Expect an even bigger, more competitive filed when fire hits the hole in Gainesville.

Eliminator ran eliminations on Saturday and local hero Mike “Big Train” Terry took the win, expertly piloting his show-stopping chopper in the final round against Vance Houdyshell, who redlit by -.033. The Train chugged down the track to consistent laps in the 12.25 range.

Diesel locomotives trains actually drive their wheels with electricity, and so does the Harley-Davidson Livewire. Donnie Huffman is the best marketing vehicle The Motor Company has for their electric bike, which draws a constant, curious crowd around it in the staging lanes and as it silently moves around the facility. And then it goes out on track for the Trophy class and knocks down steady 11.55s (give or take) for the win. His Orlando runner-up was Tennessee’s Loren Potter.

Atlanta Zippers Performance Modified winner Gary Douglass followed that success up with T-Man Performance Pro Mod number one qualifier in Orlando with an 8.75 at 135.

Modified number one honors went to Jeff Workman with a 9.33 at 141.

FuelTech racer Mike Motto won GMS Racing Engines Extreme Gas and Outlaw Street at Numidia and Atlanta, and qualified number one in both classes at Orlando—an 8.39 at 156 in X Gas and 8.31 at 160 in Outlaw.

Horsepower Inc. Hot Street number one qualifier went to Rockingham winner Scott Schenkel with a 9.93 at 131, just a smidge ahead of Numidia and Atlanta winner Charley Douglass’ 9.94 at 132.

Numidia Mad Monkey Motorsports Draggin’ Bagger winner Branon White qualified number one in Atlanta, then did it again at Orlando. This time around, White set the class record with a 9.615 at 140.24 mph.

“We made a gear change the week before Orlando,” reported White. “Round one of qualifying I made a mistake and held the clutch too long. To our surprise that was a new record! The clutch was welded together, I could not even grab the ticket—there was no way to stop!”

Bagger racer Greg Quinn stopped considerably more quickly than he intended in Q3 when his ProCharged, former Tii Tharpe bike flipped to 12 O’clock and over backwards on launch. Quinn was OK and his bike will buff out.

“We do have the 2020 Draggin Bagger Championship sealed,” continued White. “My teammate Travis Groff is second in the points race but is not safe, so our concentration will be on him.

“Gainesville will be epic! It’s been a great season, and going into Gainesville we have two bikes with a championship sealed. The Wild Child Ryland Mason, as a rookie, has won the Pro Street championship. This guy had never rode a dragbike before this year!”

Crosby Blair has ridden a dragbike or two, and runner-upped in multiple classes in Atlanta, but was numero uno qualifier in Vreeland’s Harley-Davidson 9.70 Super Gas at Orlando with a 9.719.

Super Pro 10.30 Index number one qualifier was Robert Dumars with a 10.347.

The Atlanta Pro Eliminator 10.90 winner Stoney Westbrook qualified number one in Orlando with a 10.913.

Keith Carper netted Crete’s Performance Street Eliminator 11.50 number one qualifier with an 11.508.

As the Mad Monkey said, Gainesville will indeed be epic as the finest facility in all of drag racing welcomes the hardest working, All-American motorcycle drag racing organization in the business.

And the best tracks aren’t the only thing AHDRA has to offer, there’s Big Money as well. AHDRA will have a $5000 ET shootout on Saturday after qualifying, so get in there and get that cash!

AHDRA’s Bill Rowe and his family, crew, and sponsors—especially MTC’s Eric Hochstetler—look forward to welcoming all the racers and fans to one last race in Florida sunshine before everyone settles their bikes in for the winter.

Championships will be awarded in all categories at the AHDRA Banquet at host hotel Best Western Gateway Grand, located right behind Gainesville Harley-Davidson. Ask for the raceAHDRA room rate.

Don’t miss the chance to stage your bike and race down the hallowed Gainesville Raceway 1320 on November 6-8. This is what the racing life is all about, so trailer up and live the dream!

Sam’s Picks for the Week, October 27, 2020

This effort has forced me to think about all the bullshit in my past, the good and the bad. It makes me think about how and why I survived. I’m sure Sonny had to face the same demons when he started to write about his life. I have a close friend who was a member of the Outlaws for 20 or so years. He spent seven years in prison in the east.

I recently wrote about the fights I was in during the time I was a member. It’s posted in the Life and Times of Bandit. I needed to set the record straight after George Christie’s book. I don’t talk much about anything else I was involved with.

The violent side of life subsided and I became aware of the chopper mission. Sex, chrome and creativity. We were living is strange untamed times. The moral fabric of our society became unleashed with rock and roll, hot rods and choppers. We were free like never before and girls were also free to explore and exploit their beauty like never before.

Harley shines as CEO Zeitz’s turnaround plan boosts profit

by Rachit Vats from https://www.reuters.com

Harley-Davidson Inc beat profit expectations on Tuesday as tighter inventories helped drive up prices and it reined in costs as part of Chief Executive Officer Jochen Zeitz’s restructuring plan, sending its shares up as much as 28%.

Overall shipments were down only 6% in the third quarter, recovering from a 59% slump in the prior quarter, indicating a rise in demand for the maker of large cruisers.

The sharp recovery from the pandemic lows comes as CEO Zeitz looks to recharge the business by shifting the focus back to big bikes and traditional markets like the United States and Europe.

Harley also tightened supplies and cut production, driving up prices for pre-owned bikes, which used to be a drag on new motorcycle sales.

“We are managing inventory in line or rather a little short of demand,” Zeitz said. “Dealers are selling new bike at or very close to MSRP (manufacturer suggested retail price) and higher dealer profitability.”

Global dealer inventory was down 30% in the quarter and Zeitz said the company was planning to exit 40 unprofitable markets.

The company exited the world’s largest two-wheeler market, India, last month and recently announced a plan to develop and sell a range of premium motorcycles under its brand name in the country along with Hero MotoCorp.

Retail sales in its biggest market, the United States, where Harley has not recorded a sales rise for the past six years, fell 10% from a year earlier, but was much less than the 27% slide in the second quarter.

Total expenses fell 26% to $196.9 million in the quarter.

Net income rose 38% to $120 million, or 78 cents per share in the third quarter ended Sept. 30. Analysts were expecting a profit of 21 cents per share, according to Refinitiv data.

Motorcycles and related product revenue fell to $964 million from $1.07 billion a year earlier.

Harley Davidson withdrew its official presence in India last month only to kickstart an all-new innings, this time in partnership with Hero Motocorp. News about the American cruiser specialist scouting for a suitable partner in India has been circulating for a while now with Hero Motocorp and Classic Legends (Jawa’s parent company) touted as front runners. Now, it is official.
Harley Davidson partners with Hero MotoCorp
Harley Davidson has announced that it has entered into distribution and licensing agreement with Hero MotoCorp as a part of its Rewire strategy. As a part of the distribution agreement, Hero MotoCorp will be responsible for selling and service Harley Davidson motorcycles through the American marque’s existing network of outlets.
Hero’s well established dealership network would also be used to expand Harley’s market coverage. In addition to motorcycles, the Indian partner will also take care of retailing HD parts, accessories, general merchandise, riding gears and apparels.
Hero to develop Harley motorcycles

The most interesting aspect of the partnership is the licensing agreement according to which Hero MotoCorp will develop and sell a range of premium motorcycles under the Harley Davidson brand name. No further details about this arrangement have been revealed as of now.

The Harley Davidson – Hero MotoCorp partnership is a great news for the Indian motorcycle enthusiasts. Owners of existing Harley Davidson motorcycles will be able to get service as well as spares at Harley Davidson dealerships as well as at Hero dealerships.

The country’s largest two wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp and Harley-Davidson on Tuesday announced a wide ranging partnership for the Indian market, days after the US cult bike manufacturer announced its exit from the country.

As part of the deal, Hero MotoCorp will develop and sell a range of premium motorcycles under the Harley-Davidson brand name in the country. Besides, it will take care of service and parts requirements for the Harley bikes. Further, Hero MotoCorp would sell Harley accessories and general merchandise, riding gear and apparel through a network of brand-exclusive Harley-Davidson dealers and its existing sales network in the country, the companies said in a joint statement.

“These actions are aligned with Harley-Davidson’s business overhaul, The Rewire, and the company’s announcement in September to change its business model in India,” it added.

This arrangement is mutually beneficial for both companies and riders in India, as it brings together the iconic Harley-Davidson brand with the strong distribution network and customer service of Hero MotoCorp, it added.

In September, Harley-Davidson had announced discontinuation of sales and manufacturing operations in India, a decade after it started selling its premium bikes in the country.

As part of the development, the company had announced plans to close its manufacturing facility in Bawal (Haryana) and significantly reduce the size of its sales office in Gurugram.

The exit from India is part of the company’s global restructuring activities.

In the second quarter of 2020, Harley-Davidson had initiated restructuring activities like workforce reduction and the termination of certain contracts that would result in the elimination of approximately 700 positions globally, including the termination of approximately 500 employees.

The Milwaukee-based company refers to restructuring actions related to employees and other services as ‘The Rewire’.

From its entry to exit, Harley-Davidson’s journey in the country witnessed governments of India and the US using it as a bargaining chip.

In April 2007, the then Indian government had relaxed emission and testing norms, paving the way for import of Harley Davidson bikes to India, in return for allowing mango exports from the country to the US. The import relaxation was restricted to the shipments of motorcycles up to 800 cc engine capacity or above subject to compliance to Euro III emission norms.

Later in 2009, the company announced the establishment of its operations in India, followed by starting of sales of its bikes a year later. Then the company set up its completely knocked down assembly plant in Haryana and started rolling out assembled bikes from the unit in the early part of 2011.

The company’s assembly plant at Bawal in Haryana was its second facility outside of the US after Brazil, and it had planned to use the unit to export to Europe and South-East Asian markets.

In the recent past, US President Donald Trump criticised India’s high import tariff on the iconic Harley Davidson motorcycles as “unacceptable” as the two countries negotiated for an elusive trade deal.

Hero MotoCorp and Harley Davidson to partner for Indian market

Hero MotoCorp on Tuesday said that it has entered into a distribution and licensing agreement with American motorcycle maker Harley Davidson to develop and sell a range of premium motorcycles under the Harley Davidson brand name.

The announcement comes almost a month after Harley-Davidson Inc. announced that it will discontinue sales and manufacturing operations in India as part of a global strategic restructuring plan ‘The Rewire’.

“As per a distribution agreement, Hero MotoCorp will sell and service Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and sell parts & accessories and general merchandise riding gear and apparel through a network of brand-exclusive Harley-Davidson dealers and Hero’s existing dealership network in India,” Hero MotoCorp said in a statement.

It added that as part of a licensing agreement, Hero MotoCorp will develop and sell a range of premium motorcycles under the Harley-Davidson brand name.

“This arrangement is mutually beneficial for both companies and riders in India, as it brings together the iconic Harley-Davidson brand with the strong distribution network and customer service of Hero MotoCorp,” it added.

Harley-Davidson Announces New Electric Bicycle Brand

from https://www.benzinga.com

by Ronan Glon from https://autos.yahoo.com

Many auto companies are making the move to an electric future. Harley-Davidson Inc, the company best known for loud, gas-powered motorcycles, is starting the electric journey in a different category.

Harley-Davidson announced its new brand as the Serial 1 Cycle Company, which will produce electric pedal bicycles. The name is an honorable mention to the first motorcycle produced by the company, simply named “Serial Number One.”

In statements provided to Electrek, Serial 1 Cycle Company’s brand director Aaron Frank said the project began with a small group dedicated to make an electric bicycle worth of the Harley-Davidson name. The first models will be available in March 2021. The current pictures shared are more of a concept, and the final design has yet to be revealed.

Harley-Davidson has created a sub-brand named Serial 1 Cycle Company to enter the e-bike segment. It hopes offering smaller and cheaper products will allow it to increase its profits by reaching younger buyers.

Every mobility start-up needs a utopian slogan, and Serial 1 is no exception: it aims to “change the way the world moves.” It was founded by a group of cycling enthusiasts employed by Harley-Davidson, and every member of its executive team has previously held a top-level position at the motorcycle manufacturer. There’s no word yet on whether its products will be sold in Harley stores, or if they’ll be distributed in brand-specific spaces.

Regardless, the first Serial 1 e-bike is a retro-styled model that draws design inspiration from the 1903 Serial Number One, which is the oldest-known Harley-Davidson motorcycle. It rides on white tires, its frame is painted black, and the rider sits on a brown seat propped up on a set of vintage-looking polished springs. Powertrain specifications haven’t been published yet, but it’s interesting to note the rear wheel is driven by a belt rather than a chain. Gold decals create another visual link between the bicycle and the original Serial Number One.

Additional details about the company and its products will be released on November 16, 2020, and American deliveries are tentatively scheduled to begin in the spring of 2021. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but e-bikes are rarely cheap, and nothing suggests the members of Serial 1’s design-led range of models will be an exception.

Why e-bikes?

Harley-Davidson enjoys a 117-year-old reputation in the motorcycle world, and its name resonates all over the globe, so what’s the point of building electric bicycles? In one word: profitability. It pointed out the e-bike segment was worth about $15 billion globally in 2019, and it’s expected to grow at an annual rate of over 6% between 2020 and 2025. Meanwhile, the motorcycle sector became hostile and unpredictable environment after the Great Recession, and its recovery stalled during the 2010s. COVID-19-related lock-downs were another punch in the company’s gut; retail sales in the United States fell by 10%, while motorcycle revenues dropped by 12%.

While every motorcycle manufacturer faces these challenges, Harley’s problems are compounded by an aging target audience. It’s having a shockingly difficult time luring a new generation of buyers into showrooms. Affluent 30-somethings may not be as interested in vacationing on a hog as their parents (or their grandparents) were, but Serial 1’s big bet is that they’ll be open to the idea of riding an Instagramably retro electric bike around town.

Yamaha Introduces the New 2021 MT-09 Hyper Naked

Yamaha Introduces the New 2021 MT-09 Hyper Naked With Class-Leading Specifications Increased Torque, Decreased Weight and Radical New Looks.

MARIETTA, Ga. – October 27, 2020 – Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, today introduced the 2021 MT-09 as the new model in the company’s Hyper Naked motorcycle segment. Featuring a torque-rich engine, decreased weight and radical new looks, the all-new MT-09 fully showcases Yamaha’s signature Master of Torque design.

The Dark Side of Japan

As the first decade of the 21st century was coming to an end, a group of visionary designers and engineers were working on what would become one of the iconic motorcycles in the history of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. It was to be the beginning of a whole new chapter in the history of Yamaha.

The idea was to create a new kind of machine whose primary function was to inspire, excite and impress. A radically different motorcycle that would herald a new beginning, defy convention and be the catalyst for change, not just within Yamaha but also in the world of motorcycling. A bike that was designed to be ridden just for the thrill of the ride and would instill a real feeling of belonging and a clear sense of identity to a new generation of like-minded individuals.

It became clear that the future of motorcycling was going to be all about the emotion, the thrill, the feeling, the excitement. The rest is history. Quick, agile and aggressively styled, the naked MT-09 instantly attracted a new breed of younger riders who loved its brutal good looks, big-torque engine and adrenaline-charged ride. With its strong emphasis on the thrill of the ride, together with a focus on premium quality, minimalist design and the use of pure technology that enhances the riding experience – The Dark Side of Japan philosophy has inspired every Yamaha Hyper Naked model since day one and continues to be the force that makes every MT much more than just a motorcycle.

New MT-09

Lighter, more powerful and more technologically advanced in every area, the dynamic MT-09 is the purest expression of the Hyper Naked core values. The new MT-09 delivers an even more dynamic performance as well as more agile handling. Equipped with advanced electronic controls and an all-new chassis, the 2021 MT-09 is the ultimate package that delivers outstanding value in the 900cc Hyper Naked class.

New CP3 engine

To achieve a more torquey and agile feel, the 2021 MT-09’s 890cc engine has been completely redesigned and reduced in weight. Virtually every major component is new, including the pistons, connecting rods, camshafts and crankcases. Despite its larger capacity and higher power output, the 2021 powerplant is lighter than former models.

The torquey CP3 engine delivers ‘real world’ performance, enabling the rider to fully utilize its road-focused power delivery at everyday riding speeds. The larger-capacity engine makes the 2021 MT-09 an even more exciting and rewarding motorcycle that delivers stronger performance in every type of riding condition, whether it’s fast or slow, wet or dry.

Strong torque and power with increased economy

One of the key design features of the new 890cc engine is the completely new fuel delivery system. For 2021, the fuel injectors are mounted to the throttle valve side – versus attached directly to the cylinder head – for a better fuel atomization that also reduces the fuel adhesion to the intake port walls. This new system produces outstanding combustion efficiency and contributes towards the new model’s 11% increase in fuel efficiency.

New APSG ride-by-wire throttle

The MT-09’s Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) now features a new Accelerator Position Sensor Grip (APSG). Similar to the unit featured on the YZF-R1 and R1M but equipped with model-specific friction and throttle opening settings, this lightweight ride-by-wire system replaces the previous model’s pulley set-up to give excellent feel and reliability.

New intake and exhaust systems

The all-new 890cc engine is equipped with a redesigned high-efficiency air intake system and a newly designed exhaust. These systems are designed to enhance the sense of acceleration and torque when the rider is accelerating from a stop or powering out of a low-speed corner.

As the engine speed increases, the intake sound becomes more dominant and heightens the feeling of acceleration felt by the rider. This is accomplished via a new intake system with an air cleaner box featuring an all-new three duct layout, with each duct having a different cross section and length, further enhancing the MT-09’s torque-rich riding sensation.

Optimized transmission and uprated A&S clutch

To match the 2021 model’s increased engine performance, the transmission has been optimized by slightly raising the ratios on the first and second gear. To handle the torque, Yamaha’s Assist and Slipper (A&S) clutch uses a new material for its friction plates, and the cam angle is changed to give a lighter pull at the lever for an even gentler feeling when downshifting.

Die-cast aluminum Deltabox chassis

The 2021 MT-09 features an all-new lightweight CF die-cast aluminum Deltabox chassis that has been developed in unison with the larger capacity 890cc big-torque engine. Featuring larger twin beams that run directly from the steering head assembly through to the swingarm pivot to give optimal strength, the newly designed aluminum frame, subframe and swingarm are lighter, making a significant contribution towards the increased agility of the 2021 MT-09.

For enhanced handling characteristics, the frame’s longitudinal, lateral and torsional rigidity balance have been refined, with a 50% increase in lateral rigidity for high levels of straight-line stability. To match the more compact frame and shorter front forks, the head pipe position is lowered by 30mm, giving an increased feeling of front-end grip when cornering.

High-rigidity swingarm

The new 250g lighter aluminum swingarm has a straighter right side for a more symmetrical appearance that complements the next-generation body design. To achieve better stability, the 2021 swingarm pivot is mounted between the frame structure to reduce unsprung weight and enhance the rigidity balance of the new frame.

Next-generation MT design

With its bare, beautiful and functional look, the new MT-09 represents the next major step in the ongoing evolution of the MT DNA. The design strips away everything but the essentials and presents an exterior that reveals the mechanical beauty of the bike to visually express the sound, torque, freedom and agility.

Flexible riding position

The riding position was designed to accommodate riders of varying physiques via adjustable handlebar clamps and footpeg mounting points, allowing riders to set a position that gives them a feeling of fit the moment they get on the bike. The fuel tank and seat have been refined to give the rider a feeling of being one with the machine.

6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)

The new MT-09 is the first Yamaha Hyper Naked model to be equipped with a high-tech 6-axis IMU. Developed from the system that has been used on the YZF-R1 since 2015, the MT-09’s 6-axis IMU is 50% smaller and 40% lighter.

Constantly measuring acceleration in the forward-backward, up-down and left-right directions – as well as the angular velocity in the machine’s pitch, roll and yaw directions – the 6-axis IMU sends data in real-time to the ECU which controls the electronic rider aids. The class-leading array of rider aids includes lean-sensitive Traction Control System (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS) as well as a front wheel LIFt Control System (LIF) and Brake Control system (BC).

Lean-sensitive rider aids

By monitoring the speed difference between the front and rear wheels, the lean-sensitive TCS optimizes the drive force of the rear tire during acceleration. The SCS adjusts power when a rear wheel slide is predicted, allowing the rider to focus on their riding. Similarly, the LIF enables the rider to concentrate on the road ahead by adjusting engine output to control front wheel lift and smooth out machine behavior when pulling away and accelerating. The BC system works with the ABS and independently controls and modulates the front and rear brake pressure, helping to prevent wheel lock-up during hard braking when riding upright as well as when banking.

Three TCS modes

The TCS has three switchable modes, and each mode integrates three of the rider support systems so that the intervention levels are changed all at once in Modes 1 and 2. Mode 1 delivers moderate intervention while Mode 2 gives strong intervention and Mode M enables the rider to select manual settings. These electronic aids reduce the workload of the rider for more concentration on the road ahead.

3.5-inch full color TFT display

The new 3.5-inch full-color TFT display shows clear and precise data. Its lightweight construction and mid-sized layout blends seamlessly with the new LED headlight assembly and maintains the compact and agile feeling from the rider’s viewpoint. The bar-type tachometer changes color as rpm rise and fall, and the display includes a clock, gearshift indicator, water and air temperature and more. The new display is linked with the 6-axis IMU, and riders can switch between displays and also select their preferred mode for the electronic aids via a handlebar-mounted switch.

LED projector lighting

Compact, powerful and modern, the MT-09’s new full LED headlight assembly features a single central bifunctional projector headlight with multiple LEDs that provide a broad, even and powerful beam with soft edges for both low and high beam settings. Twin LED position lights present a bold new face for the MT-09, and they project a signature Y-shape icon to give the bike a predatory stare that represents the future direction of MT design. The theme is continued at the rear where the lightweight LED taillight projects a Y-shape illumination that confirms the bike’s next-generation MT DNA.

Quick Shift System

For the ultimate acceleration, the MT-09 gets a Quick Shift System (QSS) that ensures seamless and clutchless full-throttle upshifts and smooth downshifts. Together with the A&S clutch, this electronic aid transforms the riding experience and enables the rider to optimize the torque levels for more thrilling acceleration as well as higher levels of chassis stability and control when downshifting.

10-spoke Spin Forged wheels

The new, Yamaha-exclusive Spin Forged front and rear wheels are lighter with a significant 11% decrease at the rear wheel, making a big contribution to the bike’s agile handling character.

Fully adjustable KYB® front suspension

Featuring 41mm tubes that give smooth suspension action and maintain high levels of flex resistance, the new lightweight high specification KYB front forks are fully adjustable for preload, compression and rebound damping to match the character of the compact new higher rigidity frame while reducing the tendency to pitch. The new adjustable KYB rear shock is set up to suit the all-new chassis.

Front brake with radial master cylinder

To match the higher engine performance and more dynamic chassis character, the high-tech MT-09 is only the second Yamaha model to be equipped with the YZF-R1-type front braking system. Featuring a Nissin radial master cylinder in which the piston moves in a direction that’s parallel to the brake lever travel, this Supersport-class technology gives a more linear supply of hydraulic pressure to the dual front disc brakes for excellent controllability.

Sam’s Picks for the Week, October 27, 2020

Sam picks for the Week October 27, 2020

This effort has forced me to think about all the bullshit in my past, the good and the bad. It makes me think about how and why I survived. I’m sure Sonny had to face the same demons when he started to write about his life. I have a close friend who was a member of the Outlaws for 20 or so years. He spent seven years in prison in the east.

He constantly tells me about shit he did or was involved in. Some are terrific stories, which I might share with you. I was only around the Hells Angels for 2.5 years. I recently wrote about the fights I was in during the time I was a member. It’s posted in the Life and Times of Bandit. I needed to set the record straight after George Christie’s book. I don’t talk much about anything else I was involved with.

It’s interesting to talk to my Outlaw buddy and members of other clubs. Some were actually clubs. Some were brotherhoods and families. Others were just drug driven gangsters. Most ended up in jail or dead. It was one trick bag after another, very little brotherhood at all. But different charters had different personalities.

Okay, so I escaped club life and returned to my fulltime gig with Easyriders magazine. We were having our own drug-related issues. It was mostly a constant party.

Lou Kimzey, who was my boss bought a tennis ranch in the Malibu Hills and my office was a motel room over-looking pine trees. We used the motel rooms as offices and some of them surrounded the pool. It was sort of a worn old tennis resort, but it was cool as could be for our purposes.

We started In The Wind magazine and then Iron Horse magazine, which contained metric bikes. There was a large building facing the parking lot and it became the art department. We were at the corner of Malibu Canyon and Kanan Road right next to Calamigos Ranch where the Love Ride ended for several years.

I remember four Hells Angels coming into my office one day, pissed off about something in the magazine. I don’t remember what the issue was, but I dealt with it. David Ortega was one of the Ventura members. He spread a rumor that I owed him money. He made me an iron bed frame earlier. It was an opportunity to ask him if I owed him any money, which he admitted that I didn’t. Nothing more was said and they left.

I didn’t hang out with anyone in particular. I was constantly riding with bike builders and members of the staff or helping them with bikes. This is one of those lessons I try to share with younger riders. If you hang out at the same bar constantly, you’ll end up in trouble. That trouble will escalate if you keep going back. Some folks don’t learn and pay the price.

The same applies to the story above. I didn’t go to Ventura to look for David, I waited until he was on my turf to confront him. The same applies to cops. Stay away from them and they’ll stay away from you.

I remember riding to the Kern River run one summer. I’ll never forget riding through some fields South of Bakersfield. I was riding my first cone-motor Shovelhead. We slipped off Highway 99 at Wheeler Ridge. The fields were flat, spinach green and vast. I ran an open primary and when we came to an intersection, my bike didn’t shift well. It wouldn’t come out of gear.

When I looked down, some of the clutch splines were creeping into the open. I had to keep rolling. Hot as hell, we didn’t stop until we reached a town just before we were scheduled to slip into the hills. It could have been Weedpatch or Edison. I found a gas station owner who had a repair shop out back and a set of torches.

Even though it was a sizzling hell, I tore the bike down and discovered clutch splines pulling through the hub. I had a terrible time getting enough heat to the hub to allow me to gas weld the splines back to the thick steel hub. I couldn’t mess with the bearing surface of the hub. The splines were smashed on the backside like rivets. Ultimately I shifted to building the weld up on the splines.

Miraculously, I was able to tack the splines enough to allow me to ride to the camp site up the winding two-lane highway 178 passed Bodfish and Miracle Hot Springs alongside Lake Isabella.

The deeper we rolled into the canyon the more motorcycles we heard. We rolled along the winding road past Kernville into the camping area along the stream. That’s when the party started. It was beautiful, and the heat was at bay with the strong cooling stream whipping down the hillside around massive granite boulders and pine trees shading the camping area.

It was in the afternoon while we were drinking tequila and chewing the fat, when a member of the crew approached in a panic. “A guy pulled a knife on one of our riders,” he said and pointed to a rock formation separating our campsite from another.

I approached a surfer looking guy wearing a Hawaiian shirt and shorts, wielding a long ivory-handled Bowie knife. He had long hair as I approached him and told him to put the knife away.

“No knives,” I said. “If you want to fight go for it, but no weapons.”

As soon as I turned my back to leave this jackass pulled that long blade again and slashed out to strike one of our riders, a young kid who was just having fun.

I spun and hit this bastard with my half-full bottle of Cuervo Gold, which immediately knocked him off his feet and he fell to the rocky surface below. I jumped on him, took the knife and said, “Go for what you know mother-fucker.”

Later that night my buddy Toby approached me a couple of times. The guy from the other camp wanted his knife back. “You know the code,” I told him. “Use it or lose it.” By the way, I didn’t break the fifth of tequila. It lasted until I finished it. Then shit got strange.

The next morning, I rolled out of the hills along winding paths and my clutch held. The Shovelhead motored easily to the 5 Interstate and onto a two-lanner leading into the west side of Ventura county. I held onto that knife for a couple of decades before it disappeared.

Easyriders represented freedom, the freedom to build, create and sexual freedom. In a sense it was pure, but there’s an on-going struggle in life when it comes to sex. It’s fun, pleasurable, alluring but it was designed for just one purpose to have children and further the race.

The brother who truly understood the code was a family guy, who had a wife and a couple of kids but he also enjoyed the creative aspect of building bikes. He understood the connection between the shape of a woman’s body, her glistening eyes and carefully applied make-up and the shape of his chopper, the flowing lines, the chrome and the pinstriped make-up.

When the rest of us hungry dogs finished working on our bikes, we smoked a joint and went looking for love, and the family guy returned home to his crew. The lure was hot and heavy every day, and some family guys broke down and were sucked into the scene by some slippery broad with erect nipples and perhaps the desire to use her sexual prowess to destroy a man or his family.

Don’t look at me. I’m guilty of every sin. Even today, I’m reading about the moral man and how women’s desires are different. They aren’t as deceived by shape and beauty, but they can be manipulated by the power and strength of a man. It seems they are wired from the beginning of time to find a man who will give them stout offspring and financial security.

I’ve thought recently about the Chopper code, and the outlaw life. I’ve thought about kids today and how the new Easyriders Magazine could be successful. Many young folks grew up today around parents struggling with new freedoms, running from relationship to relationship, broken homes and disappearing folks.

They are more settled and have no desire to follow the same path. I see it in my grandson’s eyes. He’s a tattoo artist who wants to build bikes, drive a cool sleek ’62 Impala, but when it comes to women he is constantly tested, but he seeks only stability and integrity when it comes to the opposite sex.

I think about my evil ways. I ponder the violence, the sex, the girls in every town and state, the passion, and the desire for custom everything. Maybe it’s something embedded in my eyes that seeks only sleek lines and rounded curves. Choppers give us all those things purely, without strings and attachments. They almost contain the touch with chrome and pure pearlescent lines, but not the warmth of a woman’s smile or the softness of her touch.

The book the Moral Animal, by Robert Wright proports to tell us: Why we are the way we are, through the new science of evolutionary psychology.

I’m still digging through it and questioning how three kids from the same family and upbringing can follow three distinctly different paths. What makes one brother stick with one profession and one wife throughout his entire adult life and the other sticks with only choppers and sex, gets married five times, lives with a half-dozen other women, leaves jobs, starts businesses, write books, set records, travel around the world and is constantly searching for something new with choppers always at his back?

The conundrum of life never ends for the adventurer and the blue-collar outlaw. Hang on for my next report. I discovered an old dusty plastic bag stuffed with a multitude of small envelopes from the ‘60s. My mother save every letter I wrote home from three tours off the coast of Vietnam. Hang on!
