Paradise Bikernet Weekly News for July 15th, 2021

Thursdays are often wild days. Thursdays are tough since I’m trying to focus on the news. Brothers are calling about Sturgis plans, which are ever-changing. We are working with Markus Cuff on a feature around a new whacky Petersen Museum Exhibit on long distance travelers. I’m working on a report about stolen motorcycle stories. I was thinking about a fictional series, but I may just post the real stories. There are lessons in each one. In the meantime, remember to ride free. We are living in the best of times. –Bandit

It’s another strange day in paradise. I’m watching the series Designated Survivor. It’s an incredibly well-done series about the Capitol being blown up and killing the entire federal government, and this guy (Kiefer Sutherland) must assume the role of President and pull it all back together, plus go after the bad guys. It’s a nail biter of the first order.

Of course, a big aspect of the show is about politics and power. We are also living in a time when the game changed, and you must look at anything political groups throw at us and wonder what’s behind the program and what are their motives.

For instance, what was Al Gore’s motives. Did he want to save the planet or make millions. He’s gone from being a millionaire with a little over one million to being worth over 300 million and climbing. He lied to the public and to young students for personal gain. Then he had the audacity to claim that anyone who came forward with new or related facts was a denier.

What’s interesting is the bullying aspect of each effort. Climate alarmists threatening you with denialism if you don’t agree. The BLM will threaten to burn your building down. The Critical Race guys will have you thrown out of your job. Remember when they told your kids to report bullies. Where do we report these guys?

So, what’s the goal? Is it money or power. Fortunately, Trump is now suing big tech companies for denying him the right to free speech. Hopefully, someone will sue the Climate Alarmists who lied to the public about doomsday for personal gain.

I find it interesting. We are living in the best of times. Folks couldn’t be healthier and happier than ever in history. Hang on for the news:

CHECK THIS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–The Tropics just logged its Second-Coldest Temperature in History, as ALL-TIME Record Cold sweeps South America

It’s been a historically chilly first half of the year for many locales –despite what the obfuscating mainstream media prints and bleats– and it is a fact that the global average temperature has regularly dipped below the 30-year baseline in 2021: in March, April, and June (click HERE for more on that).

And now comes the news that the Tropics has just logged one of its coldest temperatures ever recorded.

The reading comes from South America — a continent that has been suffering record-breaking lows and snows in recent weeks:

The Chaco Region (or Región Occidental) is a semi-arid region in Paraguay, known for its weather extremes.

The mercury can easily climb to 100F as well as tumble below the freezing mark.

A few days ago, Chaco logged a historic -7.4C (18.7F).

This was the second-lowest temperature ever recorded at such low elevations in the tropics, worldwide.

It also adds to the numerous ALL-TIME cold records busted across the South American continent of late…

In the early part of the 20th century, motorcycle culture was a homegrown phenomenon. It grew out of the passion of riders for their evolving sport. The camaraderie that developed around riding and attending competitive events led to the formation of motorcycle clubs that hosted destination rides, family picnics with motorcycle games and other riding competitions.

The newly reinstalled display case in the Clubs & Competition gallery highlights clothing from club members from primarily the 1930s and 1940s. The clothing selections on view include full dress uniforms, shirts, sweaters, jackets and caps, customized by the owners with their club name and logo, and pins or patches indicating membership in the American Motorcyclist Association. The H-D Archives collection includes Motorclothes apparel sold in H-D product catalogs but also non-H-D produced clothing items that have been proudly customized by riders.

Gail Anderson’s 1986 Softail® Custom motorcycle, “Harley Fox,” built by her partner Bob Burrows, took top prize at the first Ladies of Harley® (LOH) ride-in show during Daytona Beach Bike Week in 1987. With her custom bike and themed riding gear, Anderson presented a striking image that fit the growing visibility and exciting new options for women riders in the 1980s.

The Harley-Davidson Museum is proud to announce its collection has recently grown with the addition of a 1957 Model FL that was ridden by famed Mexican stunt rider and racer Alfonso Sotomayor Canales.
Harley-Davidson’s history in Mexico dates back to at least 1913. In the 1920s, the brand was more frequently spotted throughout Mexico City as the motorcycles proved popular with the local traffic police who would also perform stunts with their Harley-Davidson® bikes.

After racing from the 1930s into the 1960s, Sotomayor launched his own stunt riding career by performing the famed “Salto de la Muerte” or Jump of Death. Learn more about Sotomayor’s feats of derring-do and Harley-Davidson’s early entry into Mexico with this new display located in the Custom Culture area.

His wife thinks he’s pushing himself too hard,
so for his birthday she takes him to a local
strip club.

The doorman at the club greets them and says, ‘Hey, Vern! How ya doin?’

His wife is puzzled and asks if he’s been to
this club before.

‘Oh no,’ says Vern. ‘He’s in my bowling league.

When they are seated, a waitress asks Vern
if he’d like his usual and brings over a Budweiser.

His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says, ‘How did she know that you drink Budweiser?’

‘I recognize her, she’s the waitress from the golf club.

I always have a Bud at the end of the 1st nine, honey.’

A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Vern, starts to rub herself all over him and says, ‘Hi Vern. Want your usual table dance, big boy?’

Vern’s wife, now furious, grabs her purse and
storms out of the club.

Vern follows and spots her getting into a cab.

Before she can slam the door, he jumps in
beside her.

Vern tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it.

She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every 4 letter word in the book..

The cabby turns around and says,

‘Geez Vern, you picked up a real bitch this time.’

Gettysburg Bike Week Celebrates 20th Anniversary in Style with Record-setting Rally–Gettysburg Bike Week finally got to celebrate two decades of being one of the premiere motorcycle rallies in the country. The 20th anniversary rally, cancelled last year because of Covid, happened at the Allstar Events Complex in Gettysburg, PA, with festivities kicking off Thursday, July 8, 2021, and running through Sunday, July 11.

“We had to wait an extra year to celebrate our 20th,” said GBW event coordinator Kelly Shue. “Last year was a nightmare for everyone, but to see the joy on people’s faces to be out, socializing, cutting loose a bit—it made the wait worth it.”

The rally set attendance records as people, hopped on two wheels and enjoyed a normal social event for the first time in many months. Throngs of folks reveled in a slate jam-packed with motorsports and entertainment events—Mini-Bike Racing, the Moto Motion Stunt Show, Shinerunner Cornhole Tournament, Battlefield Ride of Chrome, these were just a few of the many highlights over the weekend.

And there was music galore: Fade To Black, the country’s preeminent Metallica tribute band, headlined opening night on Thursday, with Colt Wilbur Band and Dave Bray USA warming them up to a great Thursday crowd. Buckcherry laid down a blistering set of hard rock that had heads banging Friday night. Playing support earlier in the evening, Jasmine Cain returned to GBW for her second year in a row, and Honeypump got the evening off to a rollicking start. In the marquee Saturday-night-headlining-slot, KIX kicked out the glamrock jams as only they can, preceded by locals Small Town Titans and Redemption Road.

All of this in addition to one of the biggest vendor villages in the country, an epic swap meet, the Antique Bike Show, two poker runs and some of the best motorcycle terrain in the east had the record crowd in high spirits.

If you have already had an experience in life, why can’t you manifest it at another place and at another time? By the practice of yoga, you should break those limitations and be transported to the terrain of experience.

We human beings, particularly of this century, are intellectuals. Even the yoga we practise is intellectual yoga. I’ll give you an example so you can confirm this for yourself. Have you eaten chocolate?

Of course, everybody has, and some eat it every day. Now, sit quietly and try to experience the taste of the last chocolate you ate. Can you enjoy the taste of a chocolate without a chocolate? No, it is not possible. You know how sweet it was and how delicious it was, but you cannot experience it. That is the limitation of an intellectual mind. We have a lot of knowledge but we lack experience. If you ate a chocolate yesterday, why can’t you experience its taste now?

What you refer to as visualisation, I call an experience. The Sanskrit word for experience is anubhava which literally means ‘to be’. If you want to visualise a rose, you have to be a rose. If you want to visualise pain, you have to be the pain. If you want to visualise the guru, you have to be the guru. So, the definition of experience is, to be that. It’s not merely feeling or imagination; it is not illusion, it is a transformation of the total force of the mind. You can transform yourself into a rose, your guru, Christ or even a chocolate cake.

THE QUEEN OF HARLEY-DAVIDSON PASSES–
Harley-Davidson announces the passing of Nancy Davidson who is widely regarded as the “first lady of motorcycling”. Nancy and Willie G. married in 1957. She was working as a school teacher and when Willie joined Harley-Davidson in 1963, she focused on raising her family.

When Harley-Davidson launched the Harley Owners Group in 1983, Nancy and Willie connected with Harley-Davidson customers through shared riding experiences. Together, Willie and Nancy logged thousands of miles, getting to know some of Harley-Davidson’s most loyal and committed riders.

The couple traveled together to hundreds of motorcycle events, including Daytona Bike Week, Sturgis and many international events. In 2010, Nancy was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame, in recognition of her long-term positive impact on the motorcycling community.

I Used To Be A Normal Person. As a man, I used to think I was pretty much just a regular person, but I was born White, into a two-parent household which now, whether I like it or not, makes me “Privileged”, a racist & responsible for slavery.

I am a fiscal & moral conservative, which by today’s standards, makes me a Fascist because I plan, budget & support myself.

I went to High School, got in some college, got a degree & have always held a job. But I now find out that I am not here because I earned it, but because I was “advantaged”.

I am heterosexual which, according to “gay” folks, now makes me a homophobe.

I am not a Muslim, which now labels me as an infidel.

I believe in the 2nd Amendment, which makes me a de facto member of the “vast NRA gun lobby”.

I think & I reason, and I doubt much of what the “main stream” media tells me, which makes me a “Right-wing conspiracy nut”.

I am proud of my heritage & our inclusive American culture, making me a xenophobe.

I believe in hard work, fair play, & fair compensation according to each individual’s merits, which today makes me an anti-socialist.

I believe our system guarantees freedom of effort – not freedom of outcome or subsidies which must make me a borderline sociopath.

I believe in the defense & protection of America for & by all citizens, now making me a militant.

I am proud of our flag, what it stands for and the many who died to let it fly, so I stand & salute during our National Anthem – so I must be a racist.

HANG ON FOR THE EUROPEAN REGULATORS–Europe plans aggressive new laws to phase out fossil fuels.
The legislation is expected to be in sharp contrast to vague aspirations by various other countries to neutralize their emissions by midcentury.

European officials are preparing to introduce ambitious legislation designed to wean one of the world’s biggest and most polluting economies off fossil fuels far more quickly than other nations have pledged to do. The proposals could include phasing out coal as an electricity source as well as imposing tariffs on polluting imports — an idea with the potential to set off global trade disputes.

The European Commission’s package of around a dozen legislative proposals, expected this week, is designed to swiftly reduce the emissions of planet-warming gases and meet an ambitious climate goal, already enshrined in law: The 27-nation bloc has said it will cut its emissions of greenhouse gases by 55% by 2030, compared with 1990 levels.

The proposals, known as “Fit for 55,” are just that — proposals. They will take many months to negotiate among the 27 member countries and the European Parliament before becoming law. And they will most certainly invite scrutiny of Europe’s own reliance on extracting and burning fossil fuels in its own territories, from oil and gas drilling in the North Sea to coal mining in countries like Germany and Poland.

The most contentious element is something called a border carbon adjustment tax. It would impose tariffs on the greenhouse gas emissions associated with products imported from outside the European Union and, in effect, would protect European companies from goods made in countries with less-stringent climate policies. Among the products that it could target, according to a draft leaked in June, are steel, cement, iron and fertilizers.

This carbon border tax could not only shake up global trade and invite a dispute over protectionism in the World Trade Organization, it could also create new diplomatic fault lines before international climate talks taking place in Glasgow in November.

All eyes are on targets set by the United States and China, which currently produces the largest share of greenhouse gases, and, more important, how they will get there.

China and India have publicly criticized the idea of a carbon border tax. Japan isn’t keen. And the United States has said only that it is evaluating the idea of its own carbon border tax.

Exactly which products the tax would target is still unclear. The United States, for instance, is particularly concerned about the potential effect on American-produced steel, and it remains to be seen whether the border tax proposal would take into account the carbon emissions intensity of imported steel.

The United States is in a tricky position with respect to a prospective European border tax. The Biden administration is keen to restore trans-Atlantic alliances, including on climate change. And yet, with no prospect of carbon pricing legislation in the United States, several U.S. companies could be vulnerable.

The Biden administration has dangled the prospect of a carbon border tax of its own, though its prospects would likely be dim in a divided Congress. “It’s not off the table, certainly, in any of the discussions,” the White House climate adviser, Gina McCarthy, said Tuesday at a conference organized by Bloomberg. “There are many ways in which you could look at a carbon border adjustment as an opportunity here.”

Other aspects of the legislative package are likely to be contentious within the European 27-country bloc itself. Efforts to phase out the sales of new internal combustion engine cars for instance are likely to face objections from some European carmakers. (Bloomberg reported this week that France opposed a proposed 2035 ban on new gas-burning car sales.) Efforts to phase out coal from electricity generation are likely to face opposition from countries with large coal operations, like Poland and Hungary.

This emission/pollution border tax means various products can be taxed. It is not about cars or motorcycles. Steel, cement, fertilizers, etc will become uncompetitive for export to Europe. Keep in mind, if they pass this legislation, next they will pass a tax on plastics made from fossil fuels, including medical equipment.

They believe this benefits the world. How about rescuing the slave labor making Nike and other brand shoes, clothing in Bangladesh, the slave labor making Apple iPhones in China and now not allowed to commit suicide with nets installed in the buildings there, the slave labor including children mining gold, diamonds and mobile / laptop battery materials in Africa.

Maybe put border tariffs / tax on slavery associated with products imported from outside the European Union?

Why stop there? Maybe border tariff on products associated with human rights abuses? All the oil producing Arab nations including Saudi Arabia can be told their oil is not only causing greenhouse gases but affecting human rights and democracy.

What about the world’s biggest constant export market – military products? Will USA’s exports for military use get exempted since it is a stockpile by other nations, unused since there is no war going on in the importing nations?

ELECTRIC SHORTS OUT–Electric Vehicle Lawsuit: Prolonged Driving While Sitting on Giant Battery Caused Electromagnetic Radiation Injury

Electric Vehicle owner Josef Tater has filed a lawsuit against Nissan North America, Inc. in the US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He seeks up to $10 million from Nissan stating that his electric vehicle permanently damaged his health and destroyed his family and career. Tater claims that his 2015 Nissan Leaf caused serious health problems from prolonged driving while sitting on the giant battery that emitted large amounts of low-frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation.

RPM Act Gains Steam in the U.S. House of Representatives

Support for the bipartisan Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2021 (RPM Act), H.R. 3281, continues to expand each day as members of Congress receive an outpouring of support for the bill from racers and the motorsports community. Over the past few weeks 17 House members have agreed to cosponsor the bill, including U.S. Representatives David McKinley (R-WV), Robert Latta (R-OH), Ann Kuster (D-NH), Morgan Griffith (R-VA), Jim Hagedorn (R-MN), Scott DesJarlais (R-TN), David Kustoff (R-TN), Glenn Thompson (R-PA), Carol Miller (R-WV), Matt Rosendale (R-MT), Trent Kelly (R-MS), Jared Golden (D-ME), Elise M. Stefanik (R-NY), Andy Barr (R-KY), Jay Obernolte (R-CA), Michael Cloud (R-TX), and Austin Scott (R-GA).

Rep. McKinley’s support for the RPM Act is particularly noteworthy. Rep. McKinley serves as the Ranking Member of the House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change, which has jurisdiction over the legislation. The Congressman cosponsored the RPM Act bill as a result of the strong support that his constituents voiced for the legislation and the importance of the bill to the racing community in West Virginia. Rep. McKinley also cosponsored the RPM Act during the 2019-2020 session of Congress.

The RPM Act must be enacted into law to guarantee your right to modify street cars, trucks, and motorcycles into dedicated race vehicles, and ensure that industry can offer parts that enable racers to compete. It is imperative that lawmakers continue to be reminded of the importance of passing the RPM Act. Currently, 82 members of the House have cosponsored the bill. NEWS FROM THE GAS STATION–Gas prices climb 40% since Jan. 1, experts predict they’ll get even higher
The average price for a gallon of gas is $3.13, the highest price so far this year.

Filling up your car will continue to cost consumers more. The cost of gasoline has jumped exponentially since the beginning of the year, and experts predict prices will continue to rise through the summer.

The average price for a gallon of gas is $3.13, the highest price so far this year and a 40% increase since the start of 2021. It’s still lower than the 2014 peak of $3.70 and the 2008 all-time record of $4.11, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). GasBuddy said the 2018 national average of $2.97 would actually be $3.18 in 2021 dollars.

“We believe it’ll rise another 10 to 20 cents at the pump between now and the end of August,” AAA representative Jeanette McGee told CBS, who pointed to the sudden increased demand in travel, businesses restarting after COVID shutdowns, and rising oil prices.

In California, prices are already well above $4. Los Angeles drivers are paying an average of $4.33 per gallon, nearly a nine-year high, said GasBuddy.

“With imbalances in supply and demand continuing, motorists will continue digging deeper to pay for gasoline, as prices are likely headed nowhere but up until global supply starts to catch up with the surge in demand,” said GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan.

A dispute between the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia has hampered oil production by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Although the U.S. is not a member of the group, the White House said it is exerting pressure on those countries and key stakeholders.

INDUSTRY CRITIC NEWS–
People imagine recreating a buzz around motorcycles by making a movie around themes of Easy Rider or The Wild One.

But that is not even needed.

Movies such as The Great Escape and Terminator 2 were not attempting to showcase motorcycles or bikers.

The scenes involving a motorcycle was a very small yet immensely memorable part of those movies.

Those movies were aimed at a broad audience across demography, not for a small segment of motorcycle riding movie-fans.

Such movies are the ones that attract new riders, new customers, people who never thought a motorcycle would be fun to have and ride – because they are more likely to have seen that movie and loved the movie.

Apart from that hit rock songs such as The Doors “Roadhouse Blues” or Steppenwolf “Born To Be Wild” create curiosity in people who had never considered riding a motorcycle.

This week’s feature post is about the Sturgis rally in the early 2000s—the “Aughts”. It is post four of a five-part series leading up to the 2021 rally. Here’s an excerpt…

We not only rang in a new decade at midnight on January 1, 2000, we rang in a new century. All sorts of Y2K conspiracy theories built up around what was going to happen at that moment—including the end of civilization. But I for one, literally put my head in the sand by parking myself, Catherine, Kiera, and Sean in a palapa on a beach in Mexico—with no phones or connection to the outside world. (Could there be a better place for it to all end?)

Of course, nothing happened, and life just went on. Funny thing about the first 10 years of this century, even though the decade ended 11 years ago, there still is not consensus on what to call them. Some say, the “Early 2000s”, but probing deeper this seems to end with the economic crash of 2008 rather than 2010. Others simply say, “The 2000s”, but wouldn’t this refer to the entire 21st century? For the purpose of this feature, I’ll go with the “Aughts”, which the dictionary claims to be “the ten-year period from 2000 through 2009”.

The biggest defining moment of the Aughts must be the 9/11 attacks—which did change life as we knew it. Its impact was felt throughout our society and impacted so many aspects of our lives. It was certainly felt in the motorcycle world and in Sturgis, but we’ll save that in-depth discussion for another day. I’ll continue where I left off, with the unprecedented growth Sturgis had seen in the 1990s.

As the Aughts got underway, the same upward trajectory established in the ‘90s continued. For me, this was to be the most incredible decade in Sturgis to date. The excitement never ended. There was more and more to see and do, and it all seemed easier than before. This was also the time when I started my annual themed art and motorcycles exhibition series at the prestigious Journey Museum in Rapid City in 2001(now it’s held at the Buffalo Chip).

Since the history of Sturgis has always been in tandem with the rest of the motorcycle world, what was good for motorcycling was good for Sturgis. You could tell things were good when you were at a hotel during the V-Twin Expo trade show in Cincinnati and competitors were fighting over who was going to pay for the next round of drinks!

Powerhouse manufacturers like Big Dog and American Ironhorse may have started as “Harley clones”, but they grew to build close to 5,000 beautiful “custom” bikes and choppers a year. As they were sold through authorized dealer networks, it was imagined that they could eventually be legitimate challengers to Harley-Davidson.

Great aftermarket engine and transmission companies like S&S, TP Performance and Baker Drivetrain grew to supply all of the bike manufacturers that sprung up, as well as the new demand from the growing number of garage builders. And countless smaller aftermarket parts companies popped up with great ideas and products—some not so great.

As we built up toward the 100th anniversary celebration of Harley-Davidson in 2003, everything connected to the V-Twin world seemed to race off showroom floors, and the aftermarket business roared. There seemed to be enough business for everyone.

The new LiveWire One tries to compete in price with popular electric motorcycles but still it is not only fugly compared to Zero Motorcycles, the Harley-Davidson marketing avoids mentioning the real charging time of 11 hours for full charge when using the charge cord given to the customer.

All news showcases their claim of one hour charge at fast charging stations but that’s not what the customer gets to take home for $20,000+ and no list of public fast-charging stations have been provided by LiveWire in their grand announcement or their dedicated website.

BMW electric scooter is expected to cost more than available electric scooters but it is a BMW and like its cars their motorcycles always cost more. However, despite eye-catching design the BMW scooter has a poor range of 62 miles and 81 miles for its two variants. Top speed of 75 mph is good enough for those who buy scooters for urban commute.

Still, the large German company with its financial and technical resources hasn’t got a real-world replacement for the petrol scooters and motorcycles.

Tesla boss Elon Musk with the best electric vehicle in the market has of course in the past denied any electric motorcycles being made since he considers motorcycles dangerous and unsafe for the bikers.

NEWS FROM THE GEARHEAD DIARY—During the days of old there were jockey pilots. A crew of us from Torrance went to Old Miners days in Big Bear back around 1980. My friend, Terry had recently bought the bike that Eddie Paul had built for the ‘ Streets of Fire ‘ movie.

The bike overall was pretty bad ass, but it had issues. It was put together with slightly used parts and the wiring was totally substandard. She had pretty red paint, a rigid wish bone frame, jockey shift with a suicide clutch and baby ape hangers. The good thing was the red vixen haul ass like the rest of us.
 

 

I loved watching those guys in the day throw a shift on that jockey shifter. He had blazing red eyes in the bone skull shifter knob of that bike. It looked kind of eerie at night but real cool. The front end was 2 inches over with a 21-inch Speed master on her. That was really the way to do it. Eddie Paul could build some cool shit back in those days.

My friend, Big George had a Shovel /Pan with an old school stroked 98-inch Harley. He would grab a gear and just try to keep up. I watched him grab a gear with one hand, hold the apes with the other, clutch with his foot and the front end would come off the ground a couple of feet. That is just plain old skill for any rider. That old stroked Shovel had 80 inch crank wheels and stroke plates on the bottom of the cylinders.
 

 

That is just how the builders did it back in those days. There is nothing like the rides of those guys that ran a jockey shift system. I grew up in the days when we spent money on fast choppers and fast hot rods.

Those days you threw a shift on a hot trod with a Muncie with a big block and it would go sideways, and you threw another shift just to hopefully get it straightened out. It was fast cars, fast hot rods and fast women.

This story is a tribute to guys like Eddie Paul, Ed Walker, Vic Larough, Bandit and the riders that built some really cool sleds.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT—Thursdays are often wild days. Thursdays are tough since I’m trying to focus on the news. So, everyone is trying to call, text or visit. Brothers are calling about Sturgis plans, which are ever-changing.

I need to make room in the Boulder Canyon property for a couple of bikes to clear them out of the Deadwood digs. My son is coming out next week. Monday the bros are starting flooring in the basement.

We are working with Markus Cuff on a feature around a new whacky Petersen Museum Exhibit on long distance travelers. If I’m lucky we will show you next week.

I’m working on a report about stolen motorcycle stories. I was thinking about a fictional series, but I may just post the real stories. There are lessons in each one.

I am working on another Bandit’s Cantina episode number 95. Hold on.

In the meantime, remember to ride free. We are living in the best of times. Some folks just don’t want to get it.

Women-only motorcycle club rides across 48 states in 8 days

Forty-eight states in 10 days, from Kittery, Maine to Kennewick, Washington was the adventure 28 women took to honor a motorcycle legend.

“I didn’t know anyway to come out to Washington to put an event on so we came up with the 48 in 10,” Tameka Singleton of Bessie’s Belles said.

The group of ladies is from all over the United States.

They met up in Maine in early July to start their ride in honor of Bessie Stringfield.

“She kind of gives us an inspiration and we use that everyday you know just ride motorcycles,” Singleton said.

In the mid-1900’s, Bessie was a female motorcycle pioneer. She was the first African-American woman to ride the continuous United States all by herself.

She eventually founded a motorcycle club, became president and was inducted into the American Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

Tameka Singleton said Bessie is the reason they completed the cross country journey.

“The logistics are crazy, being resourceful. These ladies have made this ride what it is,” she said.

The ride started on July 5th, Tameka said they covered 15 states and hundreds of miles in the first day.

On their journey, they had to get proof that they stopped in all 48 states. So, they would stop quickly, get gas and carry on.

“Texarkana is in Texas and Arkansas – so it counts,” Tameka laughed.

The women rode with minimal sleep.

“Two to four hours of rest a night,” she said.

As they reached the west, the ladies dealt with extreme conditions.

“Now we have to go through that desert, and we have to go across New Mexico and it was hot, and that’s when somebody turned hell on,” Tameka said by the time they reached Idaho, the historic heatwave had started.

Eventually they ended their journey in Kennewick, beating their goal of 10 days.

“48 in eight, all women, what more can you say? Just watching my sisters like, they were having hard times but they never stopped and that is really the biggest reward to see people standing in this state that probably never would have been here otherwise, and for that Bessie Stringfield has really inspired all of us,” Tameka said.

The ladies spent their Tuesday at the Harley Davidson in Kennewick, to get their bikes serviced and tuned up before hitting the road again. Tameka said next up is a ride to Miami, Florida.

Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements by Harley-Davidson®, a collection of technologies intended to enhance rider confidence during unexpected situations or adverse road conditions, are designed to match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration and braking, in a straight line or while in a turn.

A round, 4.0-inch-diameter TFT screen displays all instrumentation and supports infotainment generated by the rider’s Bluetooth®-equipped mobile device and helmet headset, including music, incoming and out-going calls, and navigation supplied by the Harley-Davidson® App. All-LED lighting includes a Daymaker® Signature LED headlamp designed to produce a homogenous spread of light, eliminating distracting “hot spots.” The headlamp has a distinctive oval or capsule shape that adds style to the front end and will identify the Sportster® S model to other riders and motorists.

Optimized Chassis
The powertrain is a stressed member of the chassis, eliminating the traditional frame, a design that significantly reduces motorcycle weight and results in a very stiff chassis that contributes to precise handling. A welded tubular steel trellis swingarm features a braced design and stamped X-member to further stiffen the chassis, while its shape adds distinctive style to the motorcycle.

The Sportster® S model is equipped with fully adjustable, premium front and rear suspension – SHOWA® 43mm inverted cartridge forks and a SHOWA® Piggyback reservoir rear shock. Rear suspension features hydraulic pre-load adjustment using a convenient knob located on the left side of the motorcycle. Lightweight cast aluminum wheels with a staggered, five-spoke design are shod with wide Dunlop®/Harley-Davidson® Series GT503 tires. Premium Brembo braking components produce outstanding braking feel and performance. The single front brake features a new Brembo radial monoblock four-piston caliper and a 320mm diameter disc. The rear brake is a two-piston Brembo caliper and a 260mm diameter disc.

Forward foot controls and a low handlebar put the Sportster S rider in an aggressive posture on the bike. Unladen seat height is 29.6 inches, low enough for most riders to get feet down at a stop. Brake and clutch hand levers are adjustable for reach, to best match rider hand size or preference. The Sportster S model is pre-wired for accessory heated hand grips for added comfort in cool weather, and is equipped with two dedicated power points for heated riding gear (heated hand grips and heated riding gear/apparel each sold separately), plus a USB-C port for charging a phone or other device. An external ambient temperature sensor and a low-temp warning on the display screen alert the rider to changing conditions. Cruise control and a proximity-based security system are standard equipment. The steel fuel tank holds 3.1 gallons.

Mid-Control Conversion Kit
Relocates the left and right rider foot pegs and foot controls from the Original Equipment forward position to a mid-position on the bike. This may place the rider in a more athletic position and may also provide an improved fit for riders who cannot comfortably reach the forward controls.

Honda CB200 Modified Into An Electric Motorcycle

The electric powertrain of the modified Honda CB200 has fitted onto a stylish aluminum enclosure

Manufacturing EVs from scratch is an uphill task in itself but it is a whole new level of challenge when one has to convert a vehicle already fitted with an IC engine. We have earlier witnessed such projects being undertaken in four-wheelers such as Land Rovers and VW Beetles but this time an electric powertrain has been fitted into a motorcycle.

An aftermarket workshop named Omega Motors, based out of San Francisco in USA, has converted a 1975 Honda CB200 into an electric motorcycle. The donor model back in 1970s and 80s was a hot-selling retro-style motorcycle with a cafe racer design. The makers of this modified prototype haven’t tried to alter the design of the motorcycle in any way.

Updated Styling
Rechristened as Omega EV200, it still retains a part-scrambler and part-cafe racer design with round headlamps, single-piece ripped seat and wire-spoke wheels lending it a retro appeal. The electric CB200 gets refurbished front forks, wheels and brakes while retaining the cable-actuated front brake and rear drum brake.

Subtle modifications have been made to the chassis in order to incorporate a battery and electric motor setup. The frame has been shortened and the welded-in rear fender has been chopped off.

The pillion footpegs have also been removed while a small part of its spine has also been cut in order to weld a mounting plate for the controller. Interestingly, the motor mounts from the original bike have been left intact while the new battery pack and electric motor are attached via a set of custom mounting plates.

Specs & Features
Speaking of specifications, the motorcycle has been fitted with an electric motor sourced from Golden Motor and raed to produce 5kW (6.7 bhp) of continuous supply and peak power of 10kW (13.4 bhp). This motor feeds energy of a 1.6 kWh battery pack specifically designed and built for Omega EV200. Omega has also added a Kelly Controls controller which has been packaged neatly under the modified fuel tank and seat.

Coming to its performance, numbers are fairly modest with a top speed of 60mph (96.5 kmph). However, the electric bike weighs only 111 kilos which is 22 percent lighter than the stock CB200. The motorcycle offers a riding range of only 48 km on a single charge while charging the battery takes five to eight hours.

There isn’t much to offer in terms of features but Omega has got the stock analogue speedometer and switches working. Most importantly the clutch lever has been repurposed to work as an analogue regenerative braking control. The most attractive addition is a small digital display to reveal battery-related information which has been covered with the same piece of leather as the custom seat.

Red River Harley Davidson hosts 33rd annual Poker Run and Ride

WICHITA FALLS — It was April Fools’ in July for those over at Red River Harley Davidson who hosted their 33rd annual April Fools’ Poker Run and Ride.

All the proceeds benefit The Friendly Door and its Meals On Wheels program. Dozens participated to support the cause.

For company service writer Bobbie Gilmore, the Red River Harley Davidson poker run ride has been something she’s been doing for as long as she can remember. At this year’s 33rd annual ride, she and others said it felt good to be out riding together again.

“Everyone that knows Red River knows this is a nostalgic ride for us,” Gilmore said. “Everyone wants to be a part of it and get in on it, and you just tie in just by being here and we’re all a family together riding.”

The event started with an 80 mile motorcycle ride, followed by lunch and raffles. The ride has only gotten cancelled three times in the past, one being last year due to the pandemic.

“COVID killed it earlier, and they just got cleared,” Gilmore said. “So they got cleared, we’re ready to go, let’s do it.”

“It really has a big turnout,” Tom Venhaus, a chairman for The Friendly Door, said. “For them to give up their time on a Sunday to do the ride and then to come here and we do lunch.”

This year, the proceeds from the poker run will go to The Friendly Door Senior Center of Iowa Park.

Gilmore said, “It benefits The Friendly Door in Iowa Park. They’re a great facility that helps the seniors and also does meals on wheels.”

Officials with The Friendly Door said they will continue to cherish their relationship with Red River Harley Davidson and that they value their support.

“And to say ‘Hi, we appreciate you coming, we appreciate you supporting the center,’” Venhaus said. “Without their support, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do for the senior citizens here.”

Venhaus said each event like this one helps the center stay open to serve those seniors in the community. “Anything that we do we try to better the conditions for the senior citizens here.”

Red River Harley Davidson said they are looking forward to next year’s April Fools’ run, and they hope it will be another year of fun on two and three wheels, all to help a great cause.

Although today’s ride was a hot one, it did not stop the community from showing up. Employees at Red River said they look forward to actually having next years April Fools’ run in April.

I love riding motorcycles, but kind of hate the care and maintenance that they require — especially when it’s my own bike. Luckily, I live in a place where things are dry and dusty rather than wet and muddy, so I can get by most of the time. But when it’s time to buckle down and wash the bike, there are a few motorcycle cleaning products I always turn to.

In addition to keeping your bike clean, it’s important to clean and lubricate your chain (if you have one) and make sure your helmet is free of crud and dried bugs. I’ve listed some of the best motorcycle cleaner products here. They’ve been good to me over the years for both purposes and hopefully you’ll appreciate them too.

Best general motorcycle cleaner overall – S100 Total Cycle Cleaner
I’m one of those people who like a clean motorcycle, but hate actually cleaning their motorcycle. That used to mean that I’d just live with a dirty motorcycle most of the time, but not since I found S100 spray cleaner.

This cleaning product is awesome and it’s easy to use. Spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes and hose it off. It does a great job of removing dirt, road grime, grease, dried-on bugs and whatever else I’ve accumulated on my adventures. It’s also safe on plastics like your motorcycle windshield and metals, so no worries about it harming any exposed components on your motorcycle.

Best general motorcycle cleaner overall runner-up – Muc-Off Nanotechnology Motorcycle Cleaner
The Muc-Off Nano Tech bike cleaner spray is awesome. It smells better than the S100 and it’s biodegradable. Muc-Off also sells it in concentrate form, which I love, so you don’t have to constantly buy new plastic bottles.

Like the S100, it’s a spray on and rinse off affair and it does a great job of removing caked on road grime nastiness from all parts of your motorcycle without sending a bunch of harsh chemicals down the drain.

Best motorcycle quick detailer – S100 Detail & Wax spray
Sometimes you just need to touch up your bike before heading out on an all-day ride with your buds. I mean, you don’t want to show up and have the least shiny two-wheeled machine, now do you?

This S100 Detail and Wax spray is great because it’s specifically geared towards motorcycles and does a good job of shining paint and powder-coat. It’s easy to use, too. Just spray on the detailer and wipe it off with a good microfiber towel.

Best waterless motorcycle wash – Muc-Off High-Performance No Rinse Bike Cleaning Spray
What do you do if you have a dirty motorcycle and you don’t have access to a hose? Either take it to a coin-op car wash to use the pressure washer (which kind of sucks) or grab the awesome High-Performance Waterless Wash spray from Muc-Off.

Like basically every Muc-Off product, this bike cleaner is easy on the environment while still being tough on stubborn dirt and grime. All you have to do is spray it on, let it soak for a minute and wipe it off. After you wiped the dirt off, get a new clean microfiber cloth and buff your bike until it shines. It’s super easy and packs into a backpack or side case for easy motorcycle cleaning on the go.

Best motorcycle chain cleaner and lube – Maxima Clean Up and Chain Wax
Keeping your motorcycle’s chain clean and lubed is a miserable task, but it’s critical if you want to keep your chain and sprocket in tip-top condition. There are as many different products and techniques and old-timey sage wisdom for cleaning and lubing motorcycle chains as there are stars in the sky, but I’m going to recommend what works for me.

The Maxima products — Clean Up chain cleaner and Chain Wax — are the perfect one-two punch for chain maintenance. Clean Up does an excellent job of removing dirt, debris and and acting as a degreaser for old gross lube while at the same time being gentle on the delicate O-rings inside your chain. Chain wax is a spray-on chain lube that goes on wet and then dries into a waxy coating that resists coming off and doesn’t encourage dirt to stick to it. The best part is that Maxima offers it in a combo pack with a decent penetrating lubricant as a bonus.

Best motorcycle chain cleaning brush – Simple Solutions The Grunge Brush
As we’ve already established, cleaning motorcycle chains sucks. It’s greasy, grimy work and depending on how nasty you’ve let your chain get, it can be hard work, too. Having a good chain-cleaning brush in your cleaning kit is a huge help and my personal favorite brush is the Grunge Brush.

The Grunge Brush has stiff bristles that clean your chain on three sides at once, plus longer bristles at the other end for getting into your sprocket teeth and so on. It’s cheap and effective and it even has replaceable brushes, so you’re not constantly buying new ones. When paired with a good chain cleaning solvent like Maxima’s Clean Up, this makes the work of chain maintenance a whole lot easier.

Best motorcycle wheel cleaner – S100 Motorcycle Wheel Cleaner
There are a zillion different wheel cleaners on the market and they all do something a little different, but one of the things I like best about the S100 motorcycle wheel cleaner is that it is a thicker, more gel-like formula which sticks to your wheels better. It does a great job of getting brake dust, dirt and other grime off as well.

The other nice thing about the S100 Motorcycle Wheel Cleaner is that it’s gentle, which means it’s safe on all kinds of wheels — be they painted, powder-coated, aluminum, magnesium or stainless steel. If your bike’s wheels are too dirty for normal bike wash to take care of, grab a spray bottle of this.

Best motorcycle chrome cleaner and polish – Simichrome Polish
Unlike most cars these days, it’s easy to buy a brand new motorcycle with a bunch of chrome. And chrome looks great until it starts to dull or pit, but then it looks like crap. Thankfully the solution to that dull chrome problem is easy: Just polish it!

If you’re going to undertake that task, you’re going to need a good chrome polish compound and one of my personal favorites comes straight outta Germany. It’s called Simichrome and it works really, really well. All you need to do is apply the elbow grease with a microfiber towel using this metal polish and get ready to be blinded by the shine.

Best complete motorcycle cleaning kit – S100 Motorcycle Detailing Kit
If you’re detecting a theme with the S100 products here, you’re not mistaken. The fact is that S100 offers some of the best motorcycle-specific cleaning and detailing products around and at reasonable prices. Still, what if you don’t necessarily want to buy each product by itself? Thankfully there’s a motorcycle cleaning kit.

The S100 detailing kit comes with everything you’ll need to detail your motorcycle short of a hose and water — including a drying towel. Even better, it comes in a tidy little carrying case, so you can keep all your motorcycle cleaning supplies together and not let things get lost in the back of some dank, daddy longlegs-infested garage cabinet over the winter.

Best motorcycle helmet cleaner – Motul Helmet Clean
Everybody knows that riding with a motorcycle helmet is a good idea — hell, it’s even the law in most places. What people might not know is that while keeping your helmet clean is a good thing, using chemicals is a huge no-no — even on the outside. Luckily, there are a few great helmet cleaning products on the market and my favorite comes from Motul.

The Motul helmet spray not only does an epic job of loosening dried on bugs and dirt from the shell of your helmet, it also offers up a nice shine that is more resistant to getting bugs stuck on it in the future. Spray it on, let it soak and wipe it off.

For the inside of your helmet, never try and clean the pads and liner when they’re still inside the shell. Always remove them and wash them gently according to your helmet manufacturer’s guidelines.

The difference between the two events is The Cannonball allows riders to have a support team / trailer with spare parts, tools and shop equipment to follow the rider Coast to Coast. This allows early machines to be repaired and often rebuilt at night before the next days race. In the Cross Country Chase, the Rider has no support and must carry all spare parts, tools and gear on his own bike and make his own roadside repairs as did riders throughout most of history.
