OPEN LETTER FROM ATHENA OF VAGABOND CHOPPERS– I know that you are the most newsworthy source that we all have out there, and I am writing this in hopes that you will read it and print it in your upcoming news.
I want to say that I am so proud to have been a part of the Pink Ribbon Chopper Build, it was an awesome Daytona and we were treated so well by everyone ( Donors, Builders on site, Daytona International Speedway and spectators alike) and again I am so thankful to everyone who helped make this happen.
A good friend Charlie Bretchel was at the build and taped the entire project. Last night I finally got to watch the DVD he sent to me and it was phenominal, I cried. ( That is the chick factor, hahaha )
I watched twice and the second time around I heard myself say something that really disturbed me. Even though it was in a jokingly lighthearted situation- I feel the need to correct my statement and explain what happened. So here goes-
Six of us were working under a 10×20 tent building a bike with media people and spectators all under the same roof- everything went smoothly once the build was underway- no sweat. When it came time to fire up the bike, one of the chicks put the seat on, okay things were moving so fast when I walked up to the chopper to start it up- It rolled over once, twice and smoke came from the seat area. I normally do not start a chopper in my shop on the lift with the seat on- I leave it off and start it with my meter attached so I can check the charging system. Anyway, I immediately, pulled the seat off and found a very dangerous situation. The battery was installed and the rubber pad underneath was all bunched up which made the battery post touch the frame rail, I grabbed the battery cable with my bare fingers as it was melting along with the battery post, and ripped it off- I had blisters for weeks- another two to three seconds and the battery would have blown up in our faces and surely the paramedics and fire department would have been needed.
So I yelled out we need a battery, got one (Thanks Eddie Trotta) and went at it again- the float in the bowl was stuck and we were getting no fuel- we handled it Kate and I dropped the bowl, wiggled the float and got it all back together- No one watching knew what had happened as we handled it in a professional manner and quickly moved through it.
It fired to life and runs great. When I watched the video- I saw myself turn off the key and begin saying thank you’s- then someone in the crowd yelled out you were sabotaged!!! That is when I made a joke and said- “Sabotage by S&S” and laughed- That was not at all funny in the after sight of it. I am and have always been an avid S&S Chick from the beginning of my motorcycle riding and building history in the early 80’s- I actually spent many times at the races with the crew and Mr. Jim McClure.
No one brought this to my attention, I don’t know how many people have seen the video on Charlie’s site or on YouTube, but I want everyone to know that I was just joking around, actually if it was not for the sticky float in that carb, (which I have not experienced in quite some time) the chopper would have roared to life and then blown up in our faces. So that carb actually saved us all from being hurt and humiliated.
Brett Smith and everyone at S&S are awesome people and I would never want anyone to mistake the fact that they put out GOOD QUALITY parts. I am actually dying to get one of the X Wedge motors for a build I have blue-printed in my brain. I want everyone to know that S&S offered to donate a motor package but Custom Chrome had already been kind enough to donate a Rev-Tech 110- so I used an Evo S&S “E” Shorty Carb body and manifold with an S&S Twin Cam Aircleaner Kit on the Rev Tech ( Thank You Brett Smith and Crew ) in place of the Mikuni, because I am an S&S chick and I can make that carb perform top-notch on any motor.
The build was fantastic- I started fabrication in my shop the Thursday before the actual assembly at Bike Week. We painted it (base coat) the night before we left. So it was extreme for sure and we Kicked Ass as I see it. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is so proud and ready to start using it in promotions and set up a raffle/auction for October which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Well, thanks for letting me get that off my breast- excuse me I mean chest. SMILE!!
Thanks for being you, You Rock
All my love & respect

ANNOUNCING THE FIRST COOL BACKREST PLATES FROM IRON SPIRIT–Ironspirit owner, Jim Van Landingham, enjoys riding his 2005 Harley Road King around Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties enjoying the sweeping back roads and generous compliments from other Harley riders. What are the other riders complimenting Jim on? The cool Skull, Spade and Iron Cross backrest plates his company manufactures.
“I’ve owned a number of bikes”, states Van Landingham, “and after purchasing my Road King, I spent the next couple of months searching the web, scouring the parts catalogs and making a ton of phone calls looking for a suitable replacement for the ugly factory triangle backrest mounting plate.
I thought that if I have to put the backrest on when my girlfriend rides with me, I didn’t want it to take away from the looks of the bike. There is nothing attractive about the factory plate. And as with most business ventures, the need, or in this case my desire for something that didn’t exist created the birth of Ironspirit.”
According to Van Landingham, “Ironspirit products are designed to customize your stock Harley Davidson touring motorcycle or “Bagger” as most riders refer to them that will set you apart from the crowd. These custom polished & chrome plated mounting plates, seen at the 2007 V-Twin Expo, are an easy direct bolt-on replacement for the stock triangle plate the factory provides with their pads for the detachable sissy bar upright. And they are totally made in the United States.
Ironspirit currently manufactures three designs, Skull, Spade and Iron Cross with more designs on the table, including several targeted toward woman. “We ride and are constantly asking for input from other riders. A few of our upcoming designs are those that have been requested over and over. More women are riding “Baggers” and we have several designs we will be releasing for that portion of the market”, stated Van Landingham.
Ironspirit produces backrest mounting plates for Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle backrests, saddlebag latches as well as apparel and may be contacted at 805.433.5033 or info@ironspirit www.ironspirit.com.

HARLEY OWNERS GROUP MEMBERS WILL RENDEZVOUS IN ADIRONDACKS THIS SEPTEMBER–MILWAUKEE, Wis. (April 23, 2007) – Adirondack Park in New York will become the playground of hundreds of Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) members as they ride hard and rest easy during Adirondack Rendezvous, a mind-clearing trek through the scenic landscape of upstate New York September 3-6, 2007. The rally site, and gateway to the six-million acres of “forever wild” Adirondack Park, is Lake Placid. Although known around the world as the host for the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, it is soon to be known among H.O.G. members as the perfect place to unwind after exploring the maze of tree lined roads through the Adirondack Mountains. Ride into the northern reaches of the park on a 115-mile journey to North End Harley-Davidson in Plattsburgh. Riding through Wilmington Notch, the road squeezes between the AuSable River and a 2,000-foot cliff. The twisty mountain road continues past Whiteface Mountain, displaying a spectacular natural skyline. Heading north from Keesville, ride along the shores of Lake Champlain and take in the surrounding Adirondack vistas. From Plattsburgh, the mountains meet the river as the road winds through the Alder Brook Mountains along the Saranac River back to Lake Placid. The road heads west on the second day for a stop at Iron Block Harley-Davidson in Adams Center. Through the course of this 320-mile ride the road travels over four different scenic byways: the Adirondack Trail, the Central Adirondack Trail, the Black River Trail and the Olympic Trail, with landscapes as varied as the motorcycles traversing them. Historic, picturesque small towns along the route will entice riders to dismount and explore. Past Lake Champlain and beneath the Adirondack Mountains, the Lakes to Locks Passage waits to sweep participants south to Fort Ann and McDermott’s Harley-Davidson. With steep granite outcroppings flanking fjord-like rivers, this land feels more like Norway than New York. Trace the AuSable Chasm through Elizabethtown and Port Henry before rejoining the Adirondack Trail in Glens Falls. The Adirondack Trail heads north to Blue Mountain Lake where the Adirondack Museum offers the opportunity to learn about the history of the area. Head back to Lake Placid via Tupper Lake and the Adirondack Trail, a gentle, winding road through the mountains. Registration is open to all H.O.G. members beginning April 18. Event capacity is limited to 600 people. Cost is $175 plus $7 shipping and handling per person. To register for the H.O.G. Adirondack Rendezvous, members can visit LA CALENDAR MOTORCYCLE SHOW UPDATE–16th Annual 2007 LA Calendar Motorcycle Show Weekend July 14-15thNew! Massey BIKERNET READER’S LOSS–Last night one of my best friends, Lane O’Donoghue, lost his Dad, Tim, incircumstances that I cannot understand? The attached pic is one of fond memories from 1990 when I had just completedthe 1990 Melbourne Marathon (right) and then got on the piss with Tim and Lane. Bye Tim! –Ramon BONNEVILLE ASSALT WEAPAN SUGGESTIONS FROM READER– Bandit, I’ve been reading about your LSR bike and I remember something from back in the 90’s that BMW did for a prototype bike. They had a fully enclosed clamshell design though, But they were saying there was 1/5 the drag on the bike compared to just bike and rider. That’s why the small cc bike can get to such high speeds. As for as ground effects, I think you would have to get a lot of surface area very close to the ground, or force the air to be at a lower pressure like Ferrari uses to suck their cars to the ground with some kind of ducting. Just my own thoughts, hope it helps. –Clint Continued On Page 3

Hey,
I just returned from a 24 hour blitz to Carson City, Nevada and back to Los Angeles, over 1000 miles and a three hour meeting with Ron Paugh, at Paughco, and Rick Krost from U.S. Choppers. Paughco is going to produce Rick’s boardtracker frame and various other components as the relationship grows.
I will have more news on this biz deal as we move forward. Some exciting shit coming. I crawled out of bed Wednesday morning at 3:30 a.m. and hit the road. I snuck back into bed the next morning at 4:30. I’m in a daze, but I discovered something about Ron and the Paughco clan. They moved 40 container loads of parts and equipment out of North Hollywood about 15 years ago and hauled ass to Mound House, Nevada, five miles from Carson City. I finally figured out why. There’s four whorehouses within two blocks of the massive Paughco headquarters. There’s the Bunny Ranch, The Star Lite, the Bunny and one more I missed.
Guess where we’re moving the Bikernet Headquarters? Let’s hit the news. Then I fill you in on this weekend:

FIRST H-D DEALERSHIP IN MOROCCO–As some of you may know I started this adventure of opening the first Harley-Davidson dealership inMorocco 13 months ago. Where my son his wifewhich is Moroccan and my granddaughter live. Now finally we are ready for our Grand Opening next month, which of course you are all invited.
Most of you probably don’t know to much about Morocco, as well as I didn’t a year ago.So here is what I have learned so far.
Some of the best roads and scenery for motorcycle riding. Great weather, very much the same as southern Calif. hundreds of miles of amazing coastal line, and they speak French and Arabic. One of the most popular riding areasfor the European motorcyclist.
The Harley dealers in France and Spain have manyHarley rides a year in Morocco.

CLASSIC FRISCO CHOP FOR SALE–Hey bud- here’s that bike- I still have to wire it and put pipe clamps on- should be done by end of week. It has an S&S top end only big bore kit in it with cherry ’66 dual plug heads.
This thing supposedly runs like a raped ape. The engine/tranny have about 1000 miles on them- all fresh rebuild. Everything else is brand new. It has star hubs w/ hyd brake routed to handlebars for stopping on hills, push clutch and slap shift. 15″X4″ rear with 19″ front. New tires etc.
I went through it from a to z and it has new clutches etc, etc…. it’s a sweet little set-up.It’s a pretty true to form 70’s Oakland/Frisco style bike. Look closely at what’s goin on and you’ll see what I mean.
Anyway, it carries CA ’55 paperwork and will make someone a nice super reliable ride. The cases and tranny are suuuuper cherry and unaltered. And yes, the derby covers come with it.
I want $11.5 for it. It has a cherry NOS sporty tank, so I left the decals instead of painting. But you could take over and paint for new owner to make it super duper Hapoonistic…

TEXAS HOMEBUILT SOFTAIL–Here’s the pics of my new bike. It’s simply a Softtail with some minor changes. It’s simple by today’s standards. It came out sharper than intended. I actually wanted it to look kinda ratty. After the dust settles I’ll keep dickin around with it. I plan on doing another but I’m not sure what to do yet.
Keep the shiny side up.

Cruising For Cures
By Johnny White |
Funny sounding title ain’t it. The story actually should intrigue the adventurer in all of us. Sharon Wynn has raised a family to include children, grand children, and even a great grandchild. She has helped mold the young minds of children for over 30 years, as a part of Texas’s educational system. You could say Sharon led a rich and full life worthy of taking time off to sit back and relax, but that’s not her plan.
You see, Sharon was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2002. Being a two-time survivor of cancer forged a steely resolve in this lady, She stands up and wants to fight when others lie down and die.
“I refuse to just sit and maybe survive.”
She devised a plan to embark on a journey across America. She plans on traveling 10,000 miles in 1000 days with the sole mission of raising money to assist in finding a cure for these horrible diseases, cancer and congestive heart failure. This trip would be quite the accomplishment no matter the mode of travel, but Sharon plans on making the trip on a Harley-Davidson. What better way to see the states, I say?
We here at Bikernet salute Sharon and want to help her on her journey. Part of her plan is to gain 100,000 names and pledges for support of her cause. Just check the list of cities and dates to see if the traveling grandma will be coming to a town near you. We at Bikernet will publish updates on her travels and be able to post news of her journey right here on Bikernet.

SCOTT JACOBS’ MOST RECENT HARLEY-DAVIDSON PAINTING– Here is the excerpt from the owner of the 1908 Harley, John Parham, who was kind enough to allow Scott access to this incredible ALL ORIGINAL bike to memorialize on canvas.
Ron:
It’s original paint unrestored. It runs and was originally owned by a man from the Galesburg, IL area. It was on display in Walters Brothers H-D Dealership in Peoria for many years.
The bike was painted over and we stripped the paint off to find this original paint underneath. It is one of the best examples of an original paint 1908 Harley in the world. It is on display at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, IA. I have owned it for around four years. It is one of the most prized motorcycles I have in my collection right next to my 1912 original paint Henderson 4-cylinder bike.
The bike was dissembled and gone through by Dave Ohrt from Clinton, IA. The bike had been over painted with a dead chicken (paint brush). So we were actually very lucky there was as much original paint underneath the repaint as there was.
The bike will be also be featured in American Iron magazine in the next couple of months.
Best regards,
–John W. Parham

NEED A PLASMA CUTTER QUICK–We?re beginning the Bonneville Bike sheet metal operation tomorrow at the Bikernet Headquarters. I need to interview Ralph Randolf of Knockout Customs for his Snap-On bike feature (see the home page). It looks like Bikernet is working with Jesse Jurrens of Legends and Independent and their Sturgis Rally Park location as a sponsor. We need to wrap up the contract tomorrow morning, then it?s off to the sheet metal shops.
Next week we?ll launch a bike feature from Avon and two Girls of Bikernet features. The girl you see here is part of the mix, from RFR in Texas and there?s a knockout from Andreas in Europe. Oh, I?ll try to launch an Australian story, a Bonneville Assalt weapan update and maybe the Kristine Tech from Chop N Grind team. There?s more, but my brain is fried. Let?s ride.
Ride Forever,

NEW MOTORCYCLE PARKING LAW IN CHICAGO– Chicago motorcycle and scooter owners will be required to park their bikes “perpendicular to the curb” — or as close to 90 degrees as possible — under an ordinance advanced recently to ease Chicago’s notorious parking crunch.
The City Council’s Traffic Committee approved the Mayor Daley-sponsored ordinance with the support of ABATE of Illinois and the AMA Community Council – Chicagoland.
The ordinance also calls for receipts spewed out by Chicago’s pay-and-display parking machines to have adhesive on the back to accommodate motorcycles that have no place to secure them. Motorcycle owners will be asked to affix the sticky new receipt to the bike’s headlamp.

MORATORIUM ON DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS IN EUROPE– The European Commission (EC) eventually managed to obtain a moratorium on daytime running lights (DRLs) to be voted at the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle (WP29). Unfortunately, the position and interests defended by EC representatives radically defer from what was initially announced to the Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA).
Following the EC’s consultation on DRLs and FEMA interventions motorcyclists’ concerns regarding the intention to introduce compulsory DRL for all vehicles throughout Europe seemed to have eventually found solid footing at the EC. Dr Stefan Tostmann, Head of the European Commission’s Road Safety Unit, announced that the Commission would call for a 6 month moratorium in the United Nations vehicle regulations harmonizing process.

ANNUAL STURGIS ART EXHIBITION TO BE PRESENTED BY MICHAEL LICHTER IN STURGIS AT THUNDER ROAD AUGUST 3-10, 2007– Sturgis, SD – April 15, 2007 – Michael Lichter announced today his 7th annual motorcycle-themed exhibit, “One World Choppers,” to be held in Sturgis at Thunder Road during Bike Week. “One World Choppers” was inspired by “The British Invasion” of music from 1964-1966. After R&B and early Rock & Roll made it overseas, “Beat” groups like the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds brought a changed Rock & Roll back to the United States; and the rest is history. In a similar way, Harley-Davidson motorcycles were exported all over the world, adapted to local means and local culture, and something new was born.
“One World Choppers” is limited to 24 foreign-born builder-artists, including some that live and work in the USA and others that will ship their bikes and art from overseas. The show will demonstrate how builders from abroad have influenced and contributed to the contemporary custom motorcycle scene in America. Foreign-born two-dimensional artists, whose work, while less known in America, is of great importance in their own countries, will provide art for the accompanying wall displays. Editors of the foreign and domestic motorcycle press will provide accompanying text and commentary. Given the increasing interdependence of countries around the globe, this exhibition is particularly relevant because it brings together such a diverse group of people who share a common passion, and will stir thought and dialogue on contemporary issues, particularly globalization. Our One-World continues to get smaller, and what has happened with custom Harleys and custom choppers is a great example.
Confirmed participants as of this release include:
Alan Lee (Gangsta Choppers, Los Angeles, CA, representing Belgium)
Chica (Chica Custom Cycles, Huntington Beach, CA, representing Japan)
Frank Pedersen (Motorcycle Works, Olathe, KS, representing Norway)

The exhibition will be held inside the Thunderdome at Thunder Road, three miles east of downtown Sturgis. “One World Choppers” will open to the public Friday morning, August 3rd and will remain open through Friday, August 10th.
The Thunderdome is at Thunder Road, The Custom Capital of Sturgis, and part of Glencoe Nation. In addition to hosting “One World Choppers,” Thunder Road will be host to six custom bike shows, including: the Metzeler show; Rat’s Hole Show; Sculptures In Steel; Feel The Thunder Race Bike Show; Trike Wars: The Battle Of Three Trike Show; and The HORSE Backstreet Sturgis Invasion Show.

OHIO STEPS UP– The Ohio General Assembly Senate Bill 158 and House Bill 388 proposed additional penalties for those vehicle operators convicted of, or pleading guilty to, right-of-way, marked lane, or failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead violations that resulted in serious harm or death to another person.
The Ohio Right-of-Way Working Group, a coalition of motorcycling and bicycling groups, is seeking new legislation during the 127th General Assembly (2007-2008). Senator Joy Padgett (R-Coshocton) and Representative Jon Peterson (R-Delaware) introduce new legislation in the Senate and House, respectively.
The legislation proposes the following changes to the Ohio Revised Code covering right-of-way, marked lanes, and assured clear distance ahead violations: establishes a highway safety education fund, to be used ONLY for educational activities related to highway safety. A portion of any additional fines collected would be placed in this new fund; allows the courts, in addition to any other penalties already in place, to assess the following for violations that result in serious harm or death to another person; additional fine: up to $500 for serious harm; up to $1,000 for death; license suspension: up to six months for serious harm; up to one year for death; points on license: at least two, but no more than four, for serious harm; at least two, but no more than six, for death; and makes a citation for a covered traffic offense involving serious harm or death non-waiverable, i.e., requires a court appearance by the person receiving the citation.
We need your help today — the bills need co-sponsors. Call or e-mail your state senator and state representative to politely request they become a co-sponsor. Visit the Ohio StateWatch area of the AMA Rapid Response Center or the Ohio General Assembly Web site to learn who your elected officials are. Use your own personal experiences and the talking points provided on the website to make your case why this legislation is necessary.

TRIBUTE TO WIL PHILLIPS FROM JOHN COVINGTON–Wil Phillips was a very talented motorcycle designer/engineer. Wil was one of the first people I met when I got my first Harley, I think his shop was called Hawg Dawgs in Burbank. When I met him he was doing a bunch of work on celebrity and high profile musician’s bikes at the time. He cut and welded the rear swing arm shock mounts on my ’85 FXWG to lower it back in the day.
He actually stopped working on Bruce Springsteen’s bike to get my stuff done, and that really made me feel like he was a real kind of person, always taking the time to fully explain all the how, what and why’s to what he was doing to my bike when I was very green. I knew he was very passionate about his work the first day I met him.
When I opened my first little motorcycle shop in Sun Valley I would buy his parts directly from him. Not a lot of people know it, but he innovated the adjustable lowering kits for Softails. I think he produced those first lowering kits because he was tired of cutting up and welding on Softail frames to drop the rear end suspension. I clearly remember his yellow “Ride 1” packaging, and then seeing his innovative adjustable Softail lowering solution knocked off by tons of companies – but none of them had the inherent quality of the original pieces made by Wil. His stuff was always bulletproof.
I haven’t seen him in person since ’87 when he went off on me at the Mikuni Bike Show in Santa Monica thinking I ‘stole’ his Rubbertail design. At the time apparently we were both looking for different solutions to some of the handling issues with Softail’s, and rubber-mounting a drive train in a chassis never interested me – he spent a lot of time and energy looking for solutions to the issues inherent in the design with rubber-mounting V-Twin engines. I think sometimes he let his passion get in the way of his financial success.
He was one of those guys that was very inspirational to me in the motorcycle design world with his mindset that the stuff that H-D delivered on their bikes wasn’t the end all “perfect” package. Wil always displayed out of the box thinking with his designs to find ways to improve upon the status quo. He had “his” way of doing things that sometimes became very complex and complicated engineering solutions.
I could always relate to his challenges in the motorcycle industry where flash seems to draw in the money while he stayed focused on meat and potatoes solutions to making bikes handle and ride better.
He definitely made a huge mark, directly and indirectly upon a ton of the custom bikes built that are rolling on the road today. There are so many solutions that Wil innovated or inspired that ultimately ended up on factory H-D bikes that he will never get proper credit for.
He was a trail blazer, and I always respected his passion as a designer and engineer. Wil will be sorely missed.
RIP Mr. Phillips.
–John Covington

ARIZONA BIKE WEEK MARKS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL RALLY FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON–At Arizona Bike Week, March 28 through April 1, 2007, Harley-Davidson offered demo rides of 2007 models from Thursday to Sunday. Also, the H-D Traveling Museum was on-site to show visitors the incredible and extensive history of Harley-Davidson.
On Saturday, March 31, West World of Scottsdale hosted “A Tribute to Excellence” to celebrate the accomplishments of Willie G. Davidson, who signed autographs there and also on Sunday at the Firebird International Raceway at the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) Pit Stop.
On March 31 and April 1, Arrowhead Harley-Davidson and Chandler Harley-Davidson presented the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Arizona Bike Week Nationals, which featured an all Harley-Davidson drag race. Also on April 1, Arrowhead Harley-Davidson hosted the 11th Annual Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Rally and Silent Auction, which featured a more scenic route with a new destination and raised over $8,000 for MDA.
The Harley-Davidson New Product Trailer was open from Thursday to Sunday and featured 12 H-D motorcycles, three of which were accessorized with Genuine Parts and Accessories. The New Product Trailer also featured core and seasonal MotorClothes merchandise and Parts and Accessories displays.
THE AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST ASSOCIATION– (AMA) announced that bipartisan bills have been introduced in both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate that would end health-care discrimination against motorcyclists, ATV enthusiasts, and participants in other legal recreational activities.US Representatives Michael C. Burgess (R-Texas) and Bart Stupak (D-Michigan) introduced HR1076, “The HIPAA Recreational Injury Technical Correction Act.” On the same day, Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) introduced identical companion legislation, S 616.
The bills seek to bar employers from discriminating against those who take part in activities such as motorcycling, ATV riding, skiing, snowmobiling or horseback riding in the health-insurance programs they offer their workers.
HIPAA originally prohibited employers from denying health-care coverage based on a worker’s pre-existing medical conditions or participation in legal activities, such as motorcycling. But later federal bureaucrats reversed the law, writing rules to allow health-insurance discrimination against motorcyclists and others who engage in legal activities like ATV riding, or horseback riding — employees were guaranteed the right to health-care coverage, but not guaranteed any benefits under those plans.
Motorcyclists were outraged when federal bureaucrats went against the will of Congress, and the AMA immediately lobbied legislators to right this wrong. Others involved in the effort include the All-Terrain Vehicle Association, the American Council of Snowmobile Associations, the American Horse Council, the BlueRibbon Coalition, the Motorcycle Industry Council, Motorcycle Riders Foundation, and the National Ski Areas Association.
Enthusiasts can send letters of support to members of Congress through the AMA Rapid Response Center at www.AMADirectlink.com.
MASSACHUSETTS MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS PERIOD– Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick proclaimed the last week of March through the last week of April as the Commonwealth’s Motorcycle Safety Awareness Period, to remind motorists more than 165,000 street legal motorcycles will be back on the roads, and to help prevent accidents and injuries.
Paul W. Cote, the current Legislative Director of Modified Motorcycle Association of Massachusetts, Inc.(MMA) and AMA Community Council activist, said most motorcycle/car accidents can be prevented by simply looking for a motorcycle on the road.
As a result of a $15,000 grant from Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation, the statewide MMA’s all-volunteer membership has purchased and erected large “Check Twice — Save a Life” motorcycle safety signs in more than 150 communities to remind motorists that motorcycles will be on the roads soon.
THE LEAN AND HUNGRY NIGHTSTER DEBUTS IN MILWAUKEE–On Thursday March 29, the House of Harley-Davidson in Milwaukee hosted a Nightster Motorcycle Launch Party. The event – the first of its kind – was held at the HiHat & Garage on Milwaukee’s East Side.
Motorcycles lined the street outside the bars, but the motorcycle that stole the show was actually inside. On display within the HiHat & Garage were two 2007 Harley-Davidson XL 1200N Nightster motorcycles – the newest, grittiest, bare-knuckled edition of H-D’s Sportster motorcycles. More than 200 people attended the event to witness this exclusive debut of the Nightster.
The event also showcased the H-D Styling team responsible for bringing the Nightster motorcycle to life. With original Nightster sketches on display, the event took on the vibe of a bike night crossed with an art gallery installation.
In addition to throwing a leg over the new Nightster, attendees were treated to various giveaways including exclusive t-shirts, hats, stickers and key chains. The prize of the night was a sweepstakes for a Riders Edge New Rider Course for one guest and a friend, courtesy of the House of Harley-Davidson.
Look for additional Nightster Launch Parties as Harley-Davidson brings its newest motorcycles to the streets.

MICHEL AMALRIC AND HIS BUELL XBRR WIN FRENCH PRO-TWIN SEASON OPENER–On March 31 and April 1, the first round of the French Pro-Twin championship was fought at an unseasonably cold and wet Ledenon race track in Southern France by the Macadam Moto Team’s Buell XBRR. The XBRR, ridden by Michel Amalric, faced up against many Ducati motorcycles, as well as a few Suzuki and Honda motorcycles.
In qualifying, Amalric won the first pole of the season, challenged only by another Buell XBRR ridden by expert French rider Bruno Destoop, as well as veterans Louis Luc Maisto and Jean Yves Bonnet and newcomer Jeremie Rasting.
The day of the race, riders were faced with good and bad news. The rain that poured down all day finally stopped in time for the start of the race, however riders were still faced with a rain soaked track. For Michel Amalric, running with full wets, the race was won comfortably with a 5.909 second gap over second place finisher Jean Michel Molinier. French female racer Fabienne Migout battled Destoop for third place and prevailed. Out of 40 starters, only 22 riders finished the race.

RIVERA PRIMO NEW BIKERNET SPONSOR–A few words from Mel Magnet, the CEO of Rivera-Primo:First on behalf of the staff and management of Rivera-Primo®, I would like to reiterate something that has been on this page before and continues to be a source of pride for us all. We offer our sincere, heartfelt sympathy, and gratitude to the families of the American soldiers who lost their lives fighting for liberty on foreign soil. They died fighting for our continued freedom, and security, something many Americans sometimes take for granted. To all those brave Americans who continue to serve in Iraq and elsewhere around the world, we wish you a safe journey home.
The last two years has been a period of great change for our company. We moved into a state-of-the-art 40,000 square foot facility with complete manufacturing and distribution capabilities. This has given us unparalleled control over our quality and output and has made us in every sense of the words, a ‘world-class’ manufacturer. We also merged our two great companies (Rivera Engineering & Primo Products) into one more efficient, streamlined entity which we now proudly call Rivera-Primo, Inc.® Our new ‘Diamond’ logo represents the quality and precision that you would find in a priceless jewel.
Our 33 years of “Quality & Performance” continues with more belt drive and clutch choices than ever before. From the massive 3-1/2″ wide Brute Force with carbon fiber guards and outer bearing supports, to the 3″ wide Brute IV Extreme which retails as low as $1295, dependable power transmission continues to be the exclusive domain of Primo Belt Drives, and we continue to ‘smoke the competition’! Primo’s latest innovation is the all new Direct Drive 3 1/2 inch wide open primary belt system which relocates the starter to the area between the front and rear pulleys and the ring gear to the area behind the front pulley, giving a builder the latitude to further drop seat height as well as turn over a high compression motor with little effort. (Watch for tech installations on Bikernet.com. )
Rivera-Primo? continues to be the ‘King’ of carburetion and best place to get a high performance carburetor kit no matter what the brand name. We have in-stock, ready to ship Dual Mikuni & single Mikuni carb kits for most applications from Shovel and iron XL to twin cam motors. MOSQUITOS MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL IN THE WORLD–Now wait a minute. A mosquito is not an animal. There’s a controversy or competition going on between the notorious Deer Association of America and Mosquitoes World Wide, Inc. Deer proudly proclaim to be the most Dangerous Animal in America and seem to take some pride in their outlaw status. Now Mosquitoes have come out of the woodwork to tout their standing as the world’s most deadly insect. Seems someone dies every 30 seconds from mosquito caused Malaria in the Sahara, mostly kids.
Remember, deer are still bad in the U.S., so don’t ride at night in rural areas.

THE BLACK LIST TOUR BRINGS A HIGH-OCTAIN MIX OF CUSTOMS, EXTREME SPORTS, ART AND MUSIC TO THE FULL THROTTLE FOR STURGIS 2007–Sturgis, SD – April 20, 2007 -An all-star roster of the nation’s top custom builders and athletes are changing the face of motorcycling events, by producing a ground-breaking entertainment platform called The Black List Tour. The Black List Tour is a hard-core fusion of skateboarding, Moto X, hot rods, custom bikes, music and art, designed to redefine and revolutionize rally entertainment, and provide the ultimate platform for cross generational expression.
“Our goal for the tour is to showcase the custom lifestyle on a whole new level. The blacklist Tour will allow people to experience custom culture on a new level.” Said Black List Tour Coordinator Chad Petit..
The Black List Tour 2007 Sturgis participants are:
-Twisted Choppers, defined by their metalworking mastery, were winners on Discovery Channel’s Biker Build-Off, featured in Michael Lichter’s coffee table book, Choppers-Heavy Metal Art, and have had over 30 national and international magazine features.

Hey,
I’ve had a whacky coupled of days. I wish I could explain and maybe I can. Sometimes I feel project overload behind a constant stream of content stacking up to be downloaded onto Bikernet, bike projects and Bikernet building projects. In a sense I dig it. I’m like the content addict. I love posting articles and working with brothers and sisters on bike features, girl features, techs, you name it. If it’s in my e-mail or stacked on my desk I need to post it. Can’t wait to share it with Bikernet readers all over the world and I know that it will be archived forever.
Then there’s a day, once in a blue moon, when the only articles I have are incomplete, I’m waiting for a bike chart, a few more images, something. Suddenly I’m a duck outta water. I study my list of projects and look for loopholes, the project I missed or someone I forgot to call. I jam down to the shop and stare at the Bonneville Bike Lift. I need to hit a metal shop and buy some sheet metal. We’re waiting for Valerie to fly in and straddle this beast. Then it dawned on me, the news was just a day away, and I felt whole again. Let’s hit it:

“Dad why are wedding dresses white?” The father looks at his son in surprise and says, “Son, all household appliances come in white.”

BIKERNET READER TECH QUESTION–Just read your article on Softail shock absorbers. Have a Softail Deluxe which I want to stiffen up a bit. When I look at the adjuster end of the shocks, the plates that have the holes in, are flush with the end of the shock body, does that mean they are as stiff as they go? I assume the plates move along the body when you turn them. Maybe they don’t. Any ideas?
–Phil L.
Hey,
Bandit is right on the rear shocks. Both shock are adjusted the same, this is important!!
You use the HD spanner wrench (P/N 94455-89) to extend or compress the shocks springs to a desired position.
Mark adjuster plates for ref. before messin with them. This is so they can be adjusted the same.
1. Turning adj. plates OUT (toward the locknut) increases the spring preload to carry a heavier load.
2. Turning adj. plates IN (away from the locknut) decreases the spring preload to carry a lighter load.
3. Tighten the locknuts against the adjuster plates.

MAXXIS BRITISH SUPERSPORT SERVES UP SIZZLING THRUXTON THRILLER– The MAXXIS British Supersport series served up another thrilling race at a sun-drenched Thruxton circuit in Hampshire on Sunday.
Michael Laverty took his Relentless Suzuki GSX-R600 to the top of the podium for the second time in two races to make it a maximum 50-point haul. The 25-year-old from Toomebridge in Northern Ireland spent most of the race staying out of trouble, allowing the battling pair of team-mate Ian Lowry and Virgin Media Yamaha rider Tom Grant to clash at the final Club Chicane.
Grant lost the front of his Yamaha YZF-R6 on the penultimate lap on the raised kerbing, and the following Lowry could not take evasive action, riding over the luckless Grant – thankfully neither rider was injured.
With both riders out of the race, Laverty was free to take the win from ex-250cc GP star Jamie Robinson, while Grant’s team-mate Billy McConnell inherited third place. In fourth nearly two seconds adrift was James Westmoreland on the Centurion Racing Honda CBR600RR, while close behind and making a late-race dash for points was Stuart Easton on the Islion MSS Discovery Kawasaki. The 23-year-old former British Supersport champion putting in some quick laps towards the end of the race on his Ninja ZX-6R machine.
Laverty said: “I like to think I’ve got a 100% record so far, as this year on the 600 I’ve won one 600 race in Ireland, one Superbike race in Ireland, and now the first two rounds of the British Supersport Championship! I’m hoping I can keep that up!”
The MAXXIS British Supersport Championship now heads to Silverstone in Northamptonshire over the weekend of April 27th-29th.

RICHIE MORRIS RACING BUELL THIRD AT MOTO-ST HOMESTEAD 500K–HOMESTEAD, Fla. (April 14, 2007) – Richie Morris Racing/Daytona Harley-Davidson/Buell riders Shawn Higbee and Dan Bilansky raced a Buell XB12R Firebolt back from an early three-lap deficit to place third in the Grand Sport Touring (GST) class at the Homestead 500K, the second round of the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series.
Six laps into the race, the Richie Morris Racing Buell was forced to make an early pit stop to bleed their brakes, putting the team three laps behind the GST class leaders. Hard riding by Bilansky and Higbee and smooth pit work allowed the team to climb back onto the podium. The Richie Morris Racing Buell team completed 108 laps and finished 16th overall. They continue to lead the GST point standings.
The James Gang Racing/Hoban Brothers Buell XB12R sponsored by Hal’s Speed Shop and Buell of Appleton and ridden by Paul James and Jeff Johnson raced at the front of the GST class and battled for the lead until a warped rotor forced the team to make several unscheduled pit stops in the final 40 minutes of the event. This dropped the team back to fifth in GST and 21st overall with 105 laps completed.
The GST class was won by the RPM Motorsports/Keesee Racing Ducati shared by the father-and-son team of Todd and Kyle Keesee, who completed 110 laps of the 2.21-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway road course to finish 12th overall. Second in GST and 15th overall went to the Touring Sport Ducati Racing team of Pete Friedland, Phillip Green and Frank Shockley, who completed 109 laps.
The Roadracingworld.com Suzuki SV1000S shared by Chris Ulrich and Michael Barnes was the overall winner of the event and of the Buell Motorcycle Company Super Sport Twins (SST) class, completing 117 laps at an average speed of 89.563 mph. The Sport Twins (ST) class was won by the Pair-A-Nines Racing Kawasaki EX650 shared by Jimmy Felice and Jay Springsteen, who finished 13th overall.
The next race on the 2007 SunTrust MOTO-ST schedule is the VIR 500K, April 27-29 at Virginia International Speedway, Alton, Va.

The New Matt Hotch
By Paul Garson |
While he builds hi-visual impact motorcycles, some people call California Master Builder Matt Hotch “The Invisible Man” thanks to his ability to make lines and cables disappear to create a totally uncluttered, seamless design.
Growing up in Minneapolis, he was up on two wheels by age 10. “My Grandfather was one of those guys who came back from WWII and was in one of the early motorcycle clubs, one of those guys who hit all the hillclimbs and sorta terrorized the local communities. He and my Dad had all the tools up on peg-boards in the garage, and since we didn’t have much money, we were always dragging junk home and making something out of it.”
”I got my first car when I was 12, a VW, and went through 60 of them by the time I was 17. I’d buy them and part them out.
In the same time frame he traded a VW Baja bug for his first Harley, a ’69 kick-only Sportster. “It was straight out of the ‘70s chopper with two square headlights,” Matt said. “I lowered it, added forward controls, and drag bars. As far as working on it, I’ve always jumped in feet first. My friends brought me their bikes. I’d screw them up and learn how to do it right for my own bikes,” laughs Matt.
By 18, he had already done a couple frame-ups, and at 20 he opened his business, Hot Match Custom Cycles in Fullerton, CA and tried to make a living building bikes. His shop was down the street from McMullen Publishing, at that time home of Hot Bike magazine and several other mags, and by 1996 he was doing a lot of tech articles for them. “I also got some good direction at the time from Skeeter Todd and Jesse James as far as parts and stuff. I got some of my first patents and starting selling my parts and just kept building crazy bikes.” (His current patents include his flushmount gas camp and springless kickstand.)
Over time Matt’s line of parts prospered and he was able refocus his full creative attention on the kinds of bikes he really wanted to build. “I was in a position where I could express my full creative instincts without worrying about catering to economics and any other restrictions. No one else touches them except me, and they’re warranteed for life,” says Matt. “Even after the customer sells it. I can do that because I only build four or five bikes a year and charge a lot of money.” (For those that want to join that rare company, the minimum entry fee is $150K, the average a cool $200K and there’s a 4-year waiting list.)
Asked how he’d describe his style of bike, Matt replies, “The thing that got me noticed was hiding all the cables, the ultra-sanitary look. I saw a lot of nice customs being built but they all had wires and cables just dangling all over the place. I’ve always built my bikes around the components, around the cables and wires; even if I could just find an inch, it would be make a difference. As far as Old School, New School, I’ve always liked the look of old choppers and bobbers, because that’s the school I’m from, so I guess you could say I’m New School or Retro. But I guess you’d call my bikes Super Radicals and they’re bought by customers with a lot of money but who also appreciate the bikes as works of art. They give me free rein, exactly where I want to me.”
About two years ago Matt moved to new facility, a 16,000 sq. ft. building on the historic registry circa 1924, originally an orange packing house and that features 24-foot ceilings and oak floors. “When I walk in here, it gets my creative juices flowing.” The place is divided into a 4,000 sq. ft. showroom and office area, the remaining 12,000 sq. ft. filled with his fabrication tools and assembly benches. When you walk in you see Matt’s eclectic collection of “toys” from dirt bikes to go-carts to golf-carts to hotrods to electric wheel chairs. Asked about the chairs, he laughs and says, “We souped up a couple of them and screw around on them just for the fun.”
A recent slate cleaning of staff and business attachments has seen Matt’s business turning into a family affair, his father who had retired and his sister-in-law and wife now composing the “staff,” while Matt’s in the middle of the 12,000 sq. ft. workspace doing his thing seven days a week, although he’s often on the road because of his “celebrity” status.
Asked about that, Matt, who’s actually not a limelight kinda guy, says, “I guess a measure of that is our 18-wheeler truck and selling T-shirts. We’ve got a whole line of clothing plus we do the bike tours and shows. I actually like the smaller events in the Midwest and East Coast. They hire me to make appearances and I sit there signing posters 12-hours a day. For some people that might get old, but I realize this means a lot to the people who support you, who come to the shows and stand in line for your autograph and to buy your T-shirts.”
Matt’s also signed up to endorse various products including a line of Hardchrome exhaust pipes as well as promoting a company called Formotion that offers a line of motorcycle mounted clocks and watches including the special $9000 diamond encrusted watch, he’s morphed into his recent Biker Build-off project. He ended up incorporating it into the bike’s gas cap.
Matt rather humbly says, “I’ve always been the most expensive. When I hit the $100,000 mark, everybody else started charging more money, so I had to keep raising my prices. I have a pretty strict interview process before someone can buy one of my bikes. All my costumers become very good friends, we hang out, go on vacations together. I have to be able to work with them for a long time since I warranty my bikes forever. Just because they have a lot of money doesn’t mean they automatically get a bike. Most of my costumers are in their mid 30s. They love the motorcycle for what it is. They come from all over the world. In fact, I have one guy from Ireland who discovered the cure for Mad Cow’s disease. My customers are really interesting people and buying one of my bikes is like joining a fraternity, so we have a lot of fun.”
Part of the pricing is a response not only to the bike’s appearance but to its drivability.“I never deviated from buying the best materials to build a bike. It’s a handbuilt bike that’s forever, so every element that goes into it reflects that principle. For example, one bike I built had a one-off motor, a 140-inch Delkron 4-cam round cylinder engine with a Patrick Racing top end. That and the Discovery Bikes obviously put me in a whole different league.” He laughs and says, “The first Discovery deal was pretty stressful. I actually lost hair over it. I have long hair and got stress baldness, loosing a patch of hair in the front, but fortunately it grew back.”
Matt’s built two Discovery bikes and is “the Reigning undefeated Champion” after winning both his individual and the overall competition two years in a row. He’s sold a “bunch of bikes” as a result of the TV shows and is also conjuring up his third Discovery bike, a major departure since it’s based around a classic British Vincent V-twin, but with a 26-inch front wheel and as Matt puts it, “a bunch of crazy stuff.” As for the choice of the 1950s Vincent, the fastest production bike of its time, Matt says, “My grandfather had one when he was a hooligan and hillclimbing.”
Filming is set for August and Matt’s teamed with his friend, Roger Goldhammer. “I always wanted him to be on the Build-off .We have mutual respect. I think he’s the best, and he thinks I’m the best. We decided to race at Bonneville and not each other, so it will be a lot of fun. It’s open to the public and will be at the BUB Run What You Brung event in September.”
The other big news is that Matt and his wife are enjoying their first child, a boy born on Christmas Eve. His name is Ryder Josef. “It’s the most amazing thing that’s ever happened. I just can’t wait to share everything with him.” Asked him if he’d already bought him his first bike, Matt says, “I’m building him a truck, a Bronco rock crawler.”
Matt, a major golfer, is off to the Playboy Golf Tournament then to Puerto Rico this summer for their big island paradise event, along with his bike building buddy Eddie Trotta, then hunkering down for the next Biker Build-off. To check out his schedule of appearances and for a look at more of his radical machines log on to www.hotmatchcycles.com or www.matthotchdesigns.com.

Ride Hard, WHO IS JACK SCHITT?–For some time many of us have wondered just who is Jack Schitt? We findourselves at a loss when someone says, ‘You don’t know Jack Schitt!’ Well, thanks to my genealogy efforts, you can now respond in an intellectual way.Jack Schitt is the only son of Awe Schitt. Awe Schitt, the fertilizermagnate, married O. Schitt, the owner of Needeep N. Schitt, Inc. Theyhad one son, Jack. In turn, Jack Schitt married Noe Schitt. The deeply religious coupleproduced six children: Holie Schitt, Giva Schitt, Fulla Schitt, BullSchitt, and the twins Deep Schitt and Dip Schitt. Against her parents’ objections, Deep Schitt married Dumb Schitt, ahigh school dropout. After being married 15 years, Jack and Noe Schitt divorced. Noe Schitt later married Ted Sherlock, and because her kids were livingwith them, she wanted to keep her previous name. She was then known as Noe Schitt Sherlock. Meanwhile, Dip Schitt married Loda Schitt, and they produced a son with a rather nervous disposition named Chicken Schitt. Two of the other sixchildren, Fulla Schitt and Giva Schitt, were inseparable throughoutchildhood and subsequently married the Happens brothers in a dual ceremony. The wedding announcement in the newspaper announced the Schitt-Happensnuptials. The Schitt-Happens children were Dawg, Byrd, and Horse. Bull Schitt, the prodigal son, left home to tour the world. He recently returned from Italy with his new Italian bride, Pisa Schitt. NOW when someone says, ‘You don’t know Jack Schitt,’ you can correct them. –Crock O. Anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 bikers will ride through the Osage Indian Reservation and the scenic Tall Grass Prairie Reserve to the tiny northeastern Oklahoma community known as PAWHUSKA! Twice a year the Osage County Independent Bikers (OCIB) hold two annual bike parties at Biker Park, USA in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. First in May is “Mayfit”, with a repeat performance in September as “Biker Days in the Great Osage.” Both rallies are for adults only and are not for the meek and fainthearted. If nudity and vulgarity offend you, then you need to stay the fuck home. Pawhuska is not a motorcycle rally, it’s a Biker Rally and known at times to be wilder than a two-bit whore on nickel nite. Known as “Neutral Ground”, Pawhuska is more than just a gathering of friends. It’s a rite of passage for the new rider and a tradition for the clubs. As a matter of fact, Nelson and Pam Carter and the OCIB have been organizing bike rallies for more years than most have been riding. With a schedule of events that include Bike Shows, Burn Outs, to the most down and dirty Skin to Win contest you’ve ever seen, there is no way you couldn’t have fun unless you were either deaf or dumb. Sprinkle all of this with a bunch of ‘neked” girls and cold cheap beer, and you’ve got the ‘makins’ of what an old-school rally is all about! For 2007, MAYFIT proudly features the legendary CURTIS MOORE BAND, for some of the hottest Southern Fried Blues Rock to be heard. Moore, who is commonly known as the “Rowdy Redneck Rocker”, has shared the stage with famous groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, The Marshall Tucker Band, David Allan Coe and Willie Nelson, to name just a few. You can even sample some of Moore’s menu at myspace.comcurtismooreband. The MAYFIT rally may not be one of the biggest, but it is dam sure one of the best in the mid-west! Admission is $15, with a $15 admission for cars and $50 admission for Motorhomes. No one under 18 admitted. I have disassembled it, cleaned all the shafts, bushings, zerks, replaced neck bearings, etc, reassembled, and put it on my ’81 shovel in an ’86 Paughco rigid. It seems to work well, but I was wondering if you might have any info concerning how tight to set the nuts on the crossshafts. I do not know if this affects ride quality or not. Each end has a deep acorn nut on it with a set screw. I do not know whether to tighten them down, or leave a bit of play and then set the setscrews or what. I know you have been at this for a very long time, and perhaps would have some experience with a girder. –Preacher TOMMY THOMPSON FOR PRESIDENT PARTY– I want to thank you for all the help you have been so far in helping Tony and I promote Tommy Thompson for President. We will continue to keep you informed on what progress is being made as well as continue to update the Team Tommy.org website. There are numerous things we are presently involved in and they include getting people to know who Tommy Thompson is. Getting people to attend the party in Ames Iowa on August 10th and then having Iowa residents vote on the 11th Along with getting people to know who Tommy is we have started to contact well know people in the world of motorcycling to endorse him. We are already receiving and have commitments for endorsements from motorcycle publications, Hall of Fame members, Motorcycle Rights Leaders, and others. By all means they should check him out and the website before they do. Endorsements will be posted on the Team Tommy website. I am sure that after Tommy is elected we will look back on these endorsements and the other ways that people helped. I do not feel that there are any other candidates that will be as helpful to those of us that ride and especially to those that have motorcycle related businesses.
