Wednesday, December 12th, in the afternoon at around 3:00 p.m. champagne bottles must’ve popped open at Custom Chrome Europe in Bad Kreuznach/Germany: They are the first aftermarket-distributor to crack the tough EURO-3 homologation. Custom Chrome Europe can offer the well-established RevTech 110 in E3-conform version, allowing to build new custombikes in a street-legal fashion for all the countries where those emission standards apply. You say that’s possible with the Milwaukee-made engine too? Correct, but: Thanks to intensive research and development – both in terms of time and money – the RevTech 110 has achieved EURO-3 emission standards WITH CARBURETOR!
Interested? For sure! “We have seen the EURO-3 task quite early and reacted accordingly, starting the development well ahead of the new laws,” explains Holger Mohr, President and Managing Director of Custom Chrome Europe, “since we offer our own exclusive motorcycle line, which has only two years ago been homologated for Europe, we had the duty in the name of our customers to take on the challenges of EURO-3. And we have acted rather than reacted.”
In fact, a lot of dealers and competitors smiled in face of the T-shirts “Euro 3 – Viva la Revoluci?n” that were printed for the November 2007 Big Twin Expo at Rosmalen. Especially since – at that time – most other distributors and engine builders just had a questionmark on their face and all one answer: “Our manufacturers are working on a injection solution.” Who’s laughing now?Basically, most engine manufacturers thought the homologation of a carburetor-fed engine for out of question, technically impossible – to many factors that influence each other have to be dealt with when emissions have to be minimised to achieve EURO-3. To achieve EURO-3 with an aircooled V-Twin is a difficult task, even with electronic fuel injection. Using a carburetor did yet seem completely impossible. It’s sad but true, people who make those laws do neither care about the technical consequences of their restrictions, nor do they care about the look and the style of motorcycles. Custom Chrome Europe does.
They know: Very few custombike creators could dig into the wide and complex variables of electronic fuel injection systems – as beneficial in terms of power and performance these systems nevertheless are. Bulky electronic components such as blackbox, sensors and cables are difficult to hide and are contrary to a clean look – even the lure of programmable torque- and power-curves does not attract then. “Electronics = Devil’s work” is programmed in the brain of too many old-school customizers who use their EFI, ABS, ASP and god-knows-what-else equipped cars every day.
V-twin riders are somehow more conservative and carry rather a screwdriver than computer-mouse and laptop. A fact that did not evade the CCE staff: “On purpose we did not choose the easy way, even though our path would be much more difficult and costly”, explains Mohr, “we have a very clear idea of what our customers want – and we go to extremes to give them what they want. Even if the solutions are off mainstream or thought impossible by others.”
“Reaching the EURO-3 emmision values with carb is a great achievement”, adds General Manager Andreas Scholz. “the RevTech 110 is the version with the biggest displacement on all of our RevTech engines. Thus, the EURO-3 homologation of both RevTech 100 and RevTech 88 is only a matter of time, not a question of technical realisation.”Technical details of the coup d’etat are of course kept confidential: Too much know-how and work had been invested to give it away. So much is known: Cleaning the wasted gas is performed by especially developed catalytic converters, of which no less than four are rumoured to be placed in the exhaust system. Along with a newly developed “Secondary Air Induction System” the emission limits are met. You don’t have to be a specialist to realise that the inlet side has to be modified somehow too. The sensational fact is: All this is achieved without additional electrical or electronic components. “We are not only the first to offer a solution to our customers”, explains Scholz, “we offer one without the necessity of advanced computer- and software knowledge …”
During the last years, the RevTech engine in all its finish- and displacement-versions has become one of the “top sellers” of the CCE engine program – one that is mounted with pride even in the most high-class customs such as Marcus Walz’ “TuNero” and all Custom Chrome Motorcycles up to the new “Cuba Libre”. “The Lamb 2”, the “Best of Show” bike of the dutch “Big Twin Expo” at Rosmalen – and the first European bike to win a ticket to the World Championship of Custombike Building to Sturgis – is also powered by a RevTech 88. NEW AFFILIATE SHOW IN SPAIN– LLUNATICA’S Bike Show is the latest event to join the World Championship of Custom Bike Building affiliate program. The event takes place in the Festival and Concert enclosure of Benic?ssim on February 7-10.
The show originally began in 1996 in Vilanova i la Geltr?, where it was organized by Joan A. Martinez, who is better known as Dr. Guerra. In 2000 Dr. Guerra moved to Benic?ssim in Castellon and began running his bike show there.
Over the years the show has become a truly international event with participants from Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, France, England, Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic and Greece. Last year’s show saw 2,500 bikers register to attend, with an additional 2,000 visitors over the weekend.

Hey,
This is a wild day and you’ll love the News. It’s packed fulla crazed notions, wars, laws, new products, surprises and deals. I’m not kidding. Sometimes I hit the news as if I’m running a marathon. Sometimes it’s an uphill battle and others are downright inspiring.
I’ve got to tell you that I always look forward to Thursdays, even though it means 14 non-stop hours until completion. I’m not going to pump this up into a hype about this 120-page news Thursday. Although, I will mention a new whiskey Sin Wu stumbled on at a Trader Joes. They had a stack of Bulleit Whiskey crates on sale. “I liked the bottle with the cork,” Sin said and brought home a jug. I took it to a dinner with the good Dr. Nutboy and we popped the cork. I generally don’t like any whiskey except Jack and an Irish Whiskey (12-year old) Tullamore Dew. But this hit the spot. I lost the first bottle to the Doctor and had to find another. As you can see I sampled this one.

WOMEN RIDERS HAVE CHANCE TO JOIN H-D DAYTONA WOMEN’S DAY RIDE– MILWAUKEE (January 11, 2007) – Harley-Davidson female enthusiasts are encouraged to enter for a chance to win a spot on the Harley-Davidson Women’s Day Ride, held March 4, 2008, and join Karen Davidson, great-granddaughter of one of the Company’s founders, as well as the six Get Down to Daytona contest winners on the last leg of their ride into Daytona.
To enter, women riders should go to www.harley-davidson.com/womensride by Jan. 23 and fill out a short entry form. There is no purchase necessary, but women are encouraged to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Summer Camps (a small donation of $25 or more is greatly appreciated). Daytona Bike Week Women’s Activities
Tuesday, March 4, is Harley-Davidson Women’s Day at the Ocean Center. The Women’s Day Ride will arrive at the Ocean Center at approximately 10 a.m. Upon arrival, Karen Davidson will introduce the six winners of the Get Down to Daytona contest. Interactive seminars will be given throughout the day on how to pick up a motorcycle, customization and MotorClothes. More details will be announced in the next few weeks.
At the Daytona International Speedway Wednesday, March 5, from 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m., there will be women-only demo rides on select 2008 Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycles. Demos are free, but riders will need to bring a helmet (full-face helmet and long pants for Buell demos) and a valid motorcycle license. Each woman who takes a demo ride during that time will be automatically entered into a drawing for a women’s helmet. Men who come along with the women who participate in this special demo time will have the opportunity to attend a customization seminar and Q&A session with a Harley-Davidson factory technician.
All week at the Ocean Center, March 2-8 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., women can visit the Harley-Davidson Interactive Women’s Area featuring giveaways and prizes, motorcycle information, and a historical and informational women’s display.

BIKERNET METRIC DEPARTMENT DELAYED ONE WEEK–Due to a new whiskey on the premises, the entirely new Bikernet Metric department and site was delayed maybe as much as 10 Days.
When staff sobriety is again a priority we will launch the new major Bikernet department addition devoted to the Metric Cruiser. Don’t hold me to it, but we’re shooting for a launch by the end of next week. That’s January 25th, the day I roll out to the Grand National Car and Bike Show in Pomona. I’m judging the bikes again. It’s the granddaddy of bike shows.

W8LESS ROTORS ARE SHIPPING AND MAKING NEWS–Yet more good news: W8less brake rotors meet or exceed FMVSS 122 standards?..PERIOD! This has been the case since completion of the 4th test several month’s ago. There is no need for any other testing to meet these standards. I spent some time with Chuck Greening this AM to confirm all this. Here’s some more detail of our discussion.
All FMVSS standards must be passed before a new vehicle can be certified as road worthy: it’s something Harley and other manufacturers must do. But in reality it is a vehicle certification of which the brakes are only a part of the overall system. Due to this requirement, OEM suppliers, like W8less are often required by vehicle manufacturers or builders to put their products through the FMVSS testing to confirm to the that they can meet those requirements before, not after, the manufacturer/builder considers them as components on the vehicle. This kind of component testing before the fact is totally optional from a Federal stand point??but only to the extent that the manufacturer doesn’t require it!
How did we do? Great! The two key tests are the 1st Effectiveness Test and Final Effectiveness Test which measure stopping distance at various speeds (30/60/80/115mph) of a single brake rotor (as opposed to a complete front and back rotor system) and compare them to minimum standards. The 2nd Effectiveness Test uses the same test criteria but changes the standards to reflect the performance of both front and rear brakes simultaneously. Thus the 2nd Effectiveness Test is not appropriate for our single rotor and yet when conducted found that our single rotor has essentially the same effectiveness of a double rotor system!
Here’s the results of the stopping distance test:
1st Effectiveness Test??simulates initial “break-in” of brakes on bike (only lower speeds)
30mph DOT standard =121′ W8less = 46.7′ 61% better than DOT standard
60mph DOT standard =484′ W8less = 162.2′ 66% better than DOT standard
Final Effectiveness Test??simulates post “break-in” period
30mph DOT standard = 97′ W8less = 45.2′ 53% better than DOT standard
60mph DOT standard = 388′ W8less = 188.9′ 51% better than DOT standard
80mph DOT standard = 689′ W8less = 328.6′ 52% better than DOT standard
115mph DOT standard = 1423′ W8less = 936.5′ 34% better than DOT standard
Bottom line: W8less brake rotors smashed DOT standards across the board! It is not a stretch to state that we stop 50% faster than the DOT standards. Why then all the talk about doing another test with a thermocouple in the brake rotor? It’s not mentioned anywhere in the FMVSS 122 test and indeed temperatures were taken as specified from within the brake pads. The reason given by Chuck Greening was that “??.we wanted to see what was going on in the rotor?..” apparently because of its ability to dissipate heat so rapidly. While perhaps an interesting engineering artifact, it is entirely unnecessary for W8less purposes or to satisfy FMVSS 122 standards.

NYC PASSES PLASTIC BAG RECYCLING BILL–Last week, New York City took a giant step forward in the fight against plastic. New York’s City Council passed a bill requiring large stores and retail chains to collect and recycle plastic shopping bags. According to a New York Times report: “New York is by far the largest American city to enact so broad a measure to limit the environmental impact of the bags. Altogether, each year the country is estimated to use 86 billion bags, which end up blowing down city streets, or tangled in the stomachs of whales, sea turtles and birds, or buried in landfills where they enjoy free rent for 1,000 years.”
Other cities like Melbourne and San Francisco have banned bags outright. San Francisco was the first city in North America to ban non-recyclable and non-biodegradable bags made from petroleum products. Africa has moved toward a continent-wide plastic bag ban, and just last week, China’s cabinet issued a directive banning their production, prohibiting stores from handing out free plastic bags after June 1st and imposing fees on their usage.

BIKER BUNNY ROAST TO BENEFIT THE ANIMAL ALLIANCE OF GALVESTON (no bunnies will be injured)– The Bunny Roast is back this Easter weekend as it started out-a jammin good time. Held at west Galveston Island’s Crazy Oaks on Stewart Road (12410 Stewart Road), this year’s event will be held March 21-23, 2008. Last year the featured well known bands were Bert Wills, Janet Z, 98 in the Shade, Mark May and many others. The line-up for this year will be even more spectacular. ARIZONA SENATOR PUSHING HELMET LAW– Senator Julian Carroll, when he was governor decades ago, signed the first helmet law, but in recent years, lawmakers repealed that law. Now he says, because of the rising cost of health care, helmets need to be mandated again.
“Is that once they (riders) get injured, and their chance of survival isn’t that great without helmets, but if they survive, the state ends up picking up the bill,” says Sen. Carroll, D-Frankfort.
And, Carroll says many times the taxpayers end up ultimately paying more. But he says passing a helmet law isn’t very likely this session, because many lawmakers oppose the bill.
Carroll says some say helmets restrict the ability of riders to turn their heads and see traffic. Others tell him they don’t agree with his assessment of higher health costs because crash victims can’t pay for their own life long care.
“What I’m talking about is those individuals who end up getting a head injury and it’s so significant that they require hospitalization or care the rest of their lives,” says Carroll.
I find this statement below offensive and prejudice against the motorcycle community. For the lack of research you as the author of this article is very one-sided and a great disappointment in your report on this subject.. “but if they survive, the state ends up picking up the bill,” says Sen. Carroll, D-Frankfort.”
1. There is not a list of approved helmets, NO LIST-NOW LAW!
2. NHTSA and NTSB and DOT do NOT certify or approve helmets. This is left up toeach helmet manufacturer.
3. NHTSA contracts Performance Test ONLY according to of a hand full of helmets each year ( not always the case) from May through September. There are thousands of helmets in the NHTSA data base, a number of these are still being sold on the shelf today, this does NOT include counterfeit helmets. For the NHTSA and the NTSB to continue this thirty year+ BAND-AID for all the Amputee, Paraplegic, TBI, Blunt Force Trauma survivors isas antiquated as the test equipment and helmet debate they use today.
4. VMT (Vehicle Miles Traveled) is the basis for motorcycle Injuries and Fatalities. This data is skewed and inaccurate as stated by both the NHTSA and the NTSB, and DOT. NOT every state has participated in collecting this data over the last thirty+ years….

BIKERNET TECH OF THE WEEK, RHINO COATINGS FOR BIKES–I’m writing 1- to wish you a great and successful New Year and 2, I saw a very impressive product demonstration on TV recently.
About two years ago I goaded two of my friends to spray their bikes with Rhino Liner truck bed coating since the flat and denim black finishes were very popular anyway. One owned a Buell and the other a 1200 Sporty. Both on plastic and sheet metal the finishes were aesthetically perfect (professionally applied of course). The durability had yet to be tested.
The Buell had a low speed lay down about six months later that resulted in faint surface scratching (at 35 mph). The Sporty, after having a girder front end installed without modifying the kickstand, had a tendency to fall over standing in moderate to high wind conditions. The owner actually bragged about his bike being able to get kicked over, not get a single nick or scratch and fire up and run. It’s hit the deck 10-12 times without a single noticeable defect in the finish.
Now onto the show. Discovery Channel has a new show called Smash Lab coming on this and every Wednesday after. The preview I saw had them trying to test the true capacity of Rhino Liner and whether it could be used to protect buildings from collapsing when explosives are used.
They rigged up a pickup truck with ALOT of explosives without the liner, the results need to be seen to truly appreciate the excess of damage. Another truck with the liner and the same blast did extraordinarily well. They also hit it with buckshot at close range and as a concrete wall liner. All with varying degrees of success, but all impressive.
If you find time check it out or tape it. It’s pretty cool. And I’ve seen first hand how tough this shit really is. For the price (Both my buddies paid $150 for their skins and tins each) you really can’t beat the look, durability or protection (sparking or shearing on impact) offered by this product.

THE BUCKSHOT PRODUCT REVIEW– How many times have ya tried to squeeze that last few drops of dead dinosaur inta yer gas tank an’ only succeeded in dribblin’ it down yer paint job like slobber from a droolin’ dog? Yeah, I thought so. I’ve tried pullin’ the little rubber boot on the nozzle back, but then it won’t shut off by itself, an’ before ya know it, gas is sprayin’ all over like a shook-up beer. Not only is that bad fer yer wax job, but every drop ya spill is just more money in the OPEC boys’ pockets. Plus, if yer like me, ya just hate buyin’ another rattle-can of Rustoleum ta do a re-paint on yer scoot every time ya fill up!
The other day, I ran across a handy little gadget that’s helped me solve the problem of gettin’ my tank full while keepin’ gas off my paint. It’s called Big Al’s McCuff. Ya just slip it on the nozzle before ya stick the nozzle in yer tank, an’ it lets ya fill up right ta the brim without spillin’ a drop. If you’ve got a hotrod, a boat, or most anything that takes gasoline, the McCuff will work on it, too. It even comes with its own carryin’ case. I’m stressing. The sun hasn’t been out in days, and I’m beginning to get a sense of winters in Seattle. I like those warm rays. My stress level is exaggerated this week ’cause we’re filming the Sturgis Rider Live Talk Show at the Bikernet Headquarters on Saturday, and I’m the goddamn host. How the hell did I get wrapped up in this? Our guests include the Executive Editor of Hot Bike, Eric “the quiet man” Ellis, Deacon Jones, blues legend, Gard Hollinger of LA Chop Rods, and Sin Wu in the Kitchen, plus the Charlie Brechtel Biker Blues Band.
Something that eases the stress is all the good shit flying around this industry. A Hamster brother of mine, Jim Waggaman, of Air Streem Studios, and his co-worker Chris built a custom 1980 Yamaha SX for a shop helper who was down on his luck. We will feature it next week and it will be the first bike feature posted in the Bikernet Metric area due to be launched in January.
The Bikernet crew did the same for a longtime writer in this industry who had to sell his motorcycle to pay the rent. We dug up a Sportster and got him back on the road. So you’ll witness more articles on Sportsters over the coming months.
Finally Dr. Terry notified me that Time Magazine (Dec. 7) touted the custom motorcycle industry as a cool find for enhancing collections, and they spoke of Roger Bourget and Desmosedici RR as wild builders to consider. In the same month Forbes exclaimed the same virtues on our industry with Kid Rock, Russel Mitchell and Paul Cox as examples of fine two-wheeled artists. I didn’t know Kid Rock built bikes? AHDRA HEADQUARTERS ANNOUNCES IMPORTANT NEWS REGARDING THE 2008 SCHEDULE.PHOENIX EVENT MOVED TO SPEEDWORLD; CALIFORNIA AND VEGAS OFF THE SCHEDULE FOR 2008.–The All Harley Drag Racing Association (AHDRA) has announced immediate revisions to the 2008 Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Championship Series schedule that was originally released in early December.
The first announcement affects the Phoenix, AZ, event scheduled on March 29th and 30th. Although those dates will remain the same, the event location has been changed to Speedworld Dragstrip in Wittman, AZ.
Located approximately 20 miles from Phoenix, the facility has undergone notable improvements since AHDRA’s last appearance there in 2000.
AHDRA President Craig Tharpe explained that the reason for the move from the previous location (Firebird International Raceway) was a result of scheduling conflicts and concerns expressed over the track’s length that is needed for the high-powered Top Fuel bikes. “Ultimately, the track was not available on our desired dates, and fortunately for everyone involved, Speedworld was available,” he noted.
“Our efforts were to keep the event in the Phoenix area and in conjunction with the opening weekend of Arizona Bike Week activities,” Tharpe continued. “Speedworld Dragstrip actually puts us closer to a lot of the Bike Week activities”.
The most significant changes to the AHDRA 2008 schedule come at the season’s end, as AHDRA has announced that it will not hold national events in Pomona, CA, or Las Vegas, NV, in 2008.
The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) has been hosting AHDRA’s Championship Finals for many years. Unfortunately, efforts to secure a suitable date for 2008 were unsuccessful.
According to Chris Blair, Vice President of Racing Operations at LVMS, the facility will be hosting a major special event at the Drag Strip in November of 2008. Details on that event are not yet available, but Blair said final details would be coming soon.
AHDRA President Tharpe said that it has always been a risk holding the event in mid-November with uncertain weather conditions, and moving the event any later would certainly not be an option. “It turned out that there were no availabilities in October due to AHDRA’s secured and established Rockingham date and with the NHRA event already scheduled at LVMS,” he pointed out. Tharpe went on to say that while it is a huge change and thus an adjustment for the organization, they would try to make the best of it. “We will sit it out in 2008 and see what happens in 2009,” he said.
The impact of the Las Vegas cancellation has additional implications-namely, by forcing the cancellation of the Pomona, CA event as a national points race.
With the AHDRA Championship finals consuming three full days of racing, it is not possible for the finals to be held in Pomona because of numerous noise restriction curfews and limitations imposed on the allowed number of race days at the facility.
“We were barely able to get in our standard two-day event before nightfall at the facility-which does not have permanent track lighting,” Tharpe stated. “With the large number of competitors turning out for the final race of the year, it would not be possible to secure enough track time to accommodate our event at Pomona Raceway.”
Tharpe and many key members involved with California Bike Week and the Love Ride worked together for a great length of time to implement AHDRA’s involvement in the 2007 Pomona event and Tharpe says that he is still talking with the group to explore other possibilities available to maintain the valuable relationship.
AHDRA’s Championship Finals will now be held October 10-12 at the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Nationals in Rockingham, NC.
Tharpe explained that the Rockingham event is already one of the largest on the AHDRA schedule, and hosting the National Championship Finals there could bring phenomenal growth to the already successful event.
“Thankfully, we had already extended the Rockingham event to three days for 2008, which made it possible to easily move the finals there,” he commented.
“Steve Earwood and the staff at Rockingham Dragway are a fantastic group and provide an excellent track for us. Last year, at least nine national records were set at the event. With the fan popularity already established, bringing the AHDRA National Championships there could make it an all-around record-setting event”.
The season-end turn of events will also affect AHDRA’s National Championship Banquet, normally held on the Monday following the Finals in Vegas. Tharpe said that a date and location for the 2008 banquet have yet to be determined, but will be forthcoming.
AHDRA’s Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Championship Series will now host eleven national points events in 2008 and one non-points event in Sturgis, SD.
AHDRA contestants may choose ten races to be used in calculating National Championship points.

NC HELMET LAW FIGHT–Last summer, I spent a lot of time, as an individual citizen, presenting arguments against helmet law and enforcement. I was the only biker in Raleigh to request motion for repeal on the grounds of vagueness, in house and senate judiciary committees.

If the case goes to trial and the biker is wearing anything on their head that could be construed as a helmet, we have won cases under the old law, and stand a strong chance of winning many trials under the new statute also. You can register at bikercourt.com and help anyone log helmet tickets. There are a couple lawyers we speak with, but most of us who are providing assistance to anyone are not lawyers, so the best we can do, legally, is to inform people of many valid arguments against to support our preposition that the statute and the standard it references are vague, and the ways in which lawful enforcement is likely to have many problems.
We have been teaching people how to understand their rights during a roadside stop. It is amazing how many people don’t have a clue, answering questions they do not need to answer, and allow a search. A helmet is personal property, and roadside stops should not be reason to prompt FMVSS 218 compliance testing without consent to search, particularly since the only full testing includes destruction of the helmet.
On the Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, we began encouraging all motorcyclists to put electrical tape over their helmets DOT label, or paint over them, or label over them, as is their right as owner of the helmet. This is not a violation of federal law, and would totally screw up all plans for enforcement if all motorcyclists did this, because LE plans to ticket all people wearing helmets with no DOT label.
On New Years Day we organized and helped organize helmet protest rides in 4 counties. You might have seen the news reports and videos. We will build on this momentum with more protest actions.

In essence, it would seem that Lance came over to the UK with at least one HD 883 Sportster engine, which he then put in a Norton Featherbed and competed on, with great success on short circuits here in the UK in 1967.

As many of us know from our involvement in our State Motorcyclists Rights Organizations, politics and public policy is not a spectator sport. And the same is true with “member” organizations, whether they have 100 members or 290,000 members. Its those who participate are the ones who call the shots, sets the priorities and the organizations’ agendas.

The AMA Board of Directors consists of 12 positions. Six of those are from Industry and AMA members have no “say” in who those Industry Directors are. It may take three years, but the opportunity exists for members to stack one-half of the AMA Board of Directors with six leaders from the motorcyclists rights community. And that Plan begins NOW with this Election for the Northeast and Southeast seats, and continues with nominations each May and elections in early 2009, 2010 and 2011.
After this January 15, 2008 election, in May – nominations will begin for January 15, 2009 elections of the Southeast Region and South Central Region.
In May 2009, nominations for the January 15, 2010 elections of the North Central Region and Northwest Region will be held.
In May, 2010, nominations for the January 15, 2011 election of Northeast Region and Southwest Region will be held.Thereafter, the term of office of each Director, regardless of Class, shall be for three years. Each director shall hold office until a successor is elected.
I appreciate and thank all the SMRO leaders, AMA Clubs and Promoters in the 13-State AMA Northeast Region, for all the work and support you’ve given me in this election to the AMA Board of Directors. I hope I win. But once I win, . . . I’ll need company on the Board. Your company, your leadership, your vision.

Hey,
Can you believe it? The Holidays are caput, finished. Even at this old age, I feel a loss after Christmas tree light are unplugged. But don’t go away mad, this year promises a new, more lively spirit. There’s something in the bleak harbor air, hovering over the Bikernet Headquarters, like a typhoon season warning.
I’m rambling, but it’s true. This weekend, barely into the year, the Easyriders Show season kicks off with the ER Pomona Bike Show, with a new centerfold competition, bands, babes and all the new customs on the scene for 2008. Hang on as John Green and his lovely crew, keeps the tour alive all over the country for seven weeks runnin’. They’ll hit Pomona, then Vancouver, Sacramento, Charlotte, Memphis, Dallas and Columbus for the Invitational.
We rock from there right to Daytona for Bike week and the season is kicked off with enough action to fry eggs on all the freeways in the country. Let’s hit the news. Just thinking about the first couple of months makes my head spin. At the end of the news I’ll lay out just the first month of this year and our Assalt Weapan plans for the World’s Fastest Panhead.

The baby moose stayed around with his horses and slept in the barn. When the moose was of size he started harnessing it with his work horses. H.O.G. MEMBERS WON’T “WANT TO MISS A THING”–Aerosmith and Kid Rock Set to HOG the Stage at the Harley Owners Group 25th Anniversary Concert at Miller Park
MILWAUKEE (January 2, 2008) – Today, the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) announced that legendary rockers Aerosmith and Kid Rock will headline its 25th Anniversary concert at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, on Thurs., Aug. 28, 2008. The ticketed concert caps the free day-long Club H.O.G. 25 anniversary celebration that coincides with Harley-Davidson’s 105th Anniversary events during Labor Day weekend in Milwaukee.
“Camaraderie of the open road is at the core of the H.O.G. experience, so what better way to celebrate 25 years of H.O.G. history than by riding the world’s best motorcycles to Milwaukee with thousands of your closest friends,” said Mike Keefe, vice president and general manager, Harley Owners Group. “Our event also celebrates the start of the next 25 great years of riding together with H.O.G.”
Only H.O.G. members will have the opportunity to purchase the 40,000 tickets available for the 25th Anniversary concert at Miller Park. Concert tickets go on sale Wed., March 12, 2008, at 8:00 a.m. Central Time (CT) and will be sold on a first come, first served basis, including 6,000 seats on the stadium infield. BONNE BELLE HEADING TO DEPARTURE BIKE WORKS–Yvonne Mecailis just finished her rendition of the Chris Kallas drawing on the tanks base painted by Jim Murillo. We’re about to load the 1940 45-inch roller into a H-D crate and ship it to Departure Bike Works in Richmond, Virginia. It’s been separated from its driveline too long.
Lee Clemens is mounting a K-Model top-end on the 45 and preparing a new Sportster transmission to fit the 45 frame and transfer the power to the rear wheel. Hang on for more reports as we rumble into 2008. If you’re in Virginia and need engine work or fabrication, give this crew a shot.
LEROY GOES TO A REVIVAL– Leroy goes to the revival and listens to the preacher. After awhile the preacher asks anyone with needs to be prayed over to come forward to the front at the altar. Leroy gets in line, and when it’s his turn, the preacher asks: “Leroy, what do you want me to pray about for you?” Leroy replies: “Preacher, I need you to pray for my hearing.”
The preacher puts one finger in Leroy’s ear, and he places the other hand on top of Leroy’s head and prays and prays and prays.
After a few minutes, the preacher removes his hands, stands back and asks Leroy: “Leroy, how is your hearing now?”
Leroy says, “I don’t know, Reverend, it’s not until next Wednesday.”

THERE IT IS AS WE CLOSE OUT 2008–Whatta year. I don’t care if the economy sucks, or housing loans are screwed, ’cause no one knows how to save a nickel anymore. Next year will rock, bike builders will create amazing masterpieces, brothers will give it all they got to break records in Bonneville and we’ll party like there’s no tomorrow.
No matter what the market does, the sun will shine and the roads will remain wide open. Our bike building nature will scream for an outlet, and the girl next door will still drive us wild.
So it all looks good to me. Bikernet readership numbers grew again this year, over 75 percent, and I want to thank everyone who stepped up to help us set another record in Bonneville, with the World’s Fastest Panhead. In the next week I hope to unveil our plans for 2008.
I wish everyone a terrific 2008. I may be optimistic, but my victorious vibe speaks of good shit on the horizon. The buzz is high, more and more younger guys want to build and ride bikes than ever before. Custom motorcycles represent the true American spirit of freedom.

Hey,
Just a couple of days past Christmas and we’re scrambling toward the first. We thought we’d take a day or two off, but the content keeps flying at Bikernet, so I’m forced, by the gods of chrome, to keep up.
We’re just about to launch our new BikernetMetric.com section and we already have content rolling in on new models, a Kawasaki custom bike feature by Jim Waggaman and security for bikes during the winter.
I’m in trouble. I don’t know the models, the history or even the wrenches. The guys at JIMS are trying to develop tools for metric cruisers. Fortunately we have a team for Bikernet Metric, made up of two generations of metric bike owners, Bob Osias, the boss of MetricThunder, a parts distributor and shop, plus his son Matt will take on the job as editor. Jeff Najar will supply content for North Carolina and Josh Placa has Sedona, Arizona covered, the vortex of the Metric Revolution.
I ain’t doing shit. I’ve got my hands full with the American side. Me, Sin Wu, Renegade, Wilburn Roach, Wrench and Snake are staying put, right here. We’ll sit back with a bottle of Jack and a case of Coronas and watch. The section is due to launch on the 15th of January, unless the Digital Gangster, our Web Master Guru, goes on strike. Believe me I know how lucky we are. I stand at the graves of my family who were all coal miners. My great, great grandfather (Pappy) dug coal by hand. For every coal car that he filled up, he got 10 cents. He might dig 6 hrs of slag to get one car of coal. All he got paid for was the full car of coal. They were poor but proud people, who looked you in the eye when they spoke to you.
I still have his hunting gun. I can’t think of better folks to come from. I worked in a coal mine when I was 19 for a little over a year. I know how lucky we are to be able to do what we love, whether we make a ton of cash or not. We’re standing in the sun, riding by the moonlight, chasing broads and enjoying our freedom. It couldn’t be better.

SAVING AT THE PUMPS–Take these tips from auto experts and obsessive “hypermilers” on how to go farther on a gallon of gas.–By Katharine Mieszkowski
Dec. 24, 2007 With oil flirting with $100 a barrel, and $3 gas looking like the new normal, perhaps instead of resolving to curb your gluttony in 2008, you should pledge to train your car to be a fuel sipper. “Every time you get into your car and turn on your ignition you can save money,” says Bradlee Fons of Pewaukee, Wis., who teaches seminars on efficient driving. “It helps the country with national security and oil dependence, and it helps the world with global warming.”The most efficient way to save gas, as any “one-less-car” transportation activist will attest, is to leave your car in the garage.
When you’re in the market for a car, choose the most fuel-efficient model. That should get easier to do in the coming years as automakers comply with the just-passed law to move America’s fleet from an average fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon to 35 by 2020, a 40 percent increase.Yet there are also simple steps that every driver can take with an existing car, truck or SUV to save fuel simply by improving driving habits. “If you’re an aggressive driver, and many, many people are, you should become a moderate driver,” says Philip Reed, senior consumer advice editor for Edmunds.com. Adopting a mellower approach on the road not only will ameliorate your road rage but could save you the equivalent of $1 a gallon, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, by improving your fuel efficiency as much as 33 percent.
Adopting a lower cruising speed can also help your car go farther with less gasoline. The efficiency of most cars rapidly declines at speeds over 60. In fact, every 5 miles per hour over 60 you drive is like paying an extra 20 cents a gallon for gas, according to the Department of Energy.
In stop-and-go traffic, strive to maintain one consistent low speed instead of accelerating and braking, accelerating and braking. To do this, drive in the slow lane, and maintain a long buffer zone in front of you, so you won’t have to slam on the brakes to avoid rear-ending the next car.
Any time you hear the engine revving high you’re gulping fuel. If you drive a stick shift, and you’re cruising along in third, shift to fourth, and hear the revs of the engine drop. Your car is the most inefficient when the engine is still warming up, so taking fewer trips by combining errands into one trip will save gas. Drive to your farthest destination, and then do the errands closer to home on the way back. When choosing your route, avoid hills if possible, so you won’t be wasting energy hauling thousands of pounds of steel up an incline.
If you’ve got 57 books in your trunk that you keep meaning to donate to the library, but never get around to doing, try this experiment: “Take all that stuff out, and put it in a wheelbarrow, and push it up and down the driveway once, and you’ll see how much energy it takes,” says Wayne Gerdes. Gerdes invented the term “hypermiler” to describe the obsessive drivers like him who strive to wring every last mile out of a gallon of gas, exceeding the EPA’s estimate of how far a car can go per gallon.
The more weight your car has to carry the harder it works, even though the overall gas savings are small, about 1 to 2 percent per 100 excess pounds eliminated, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Reed at Edmunds doesn’t worry too much about excess weight in the trunk, since he believes this tip was crafted back in the 1970s when New Englanders would keep 150-pound bags of sand in their trunks in hopes of getting better traction in the ice and snow in winter.
Avoiding excessive idling is also a must. Anytime you’re idling for more than 15 seconds, such as at a railroad crossing or when waiting curbside to pick up your child from school, turn off your engine, advises Fons, who co-founded the Milwaukee Hybrid Group, which gives tips on what he calls eco-driving. The bigger your engine, the more fuel you typically waste idling. But whatever car you have, when it’s idling it gets — duh! — zero miles per gallon. Idling is one of those bad habits that die hard.
Keeping your car tuned up can also bring some gas mileage improvements. Keeping tires properly inflated and frequently changing the air filter are the two biggies. “Gasoline is only one of the fuels the car burns,” explains Reed. “The other is oxygen, so feeding it with clean oxygen is very important.”
If you really get into saving gas, you can invest in a scan gauge, which costs about $170. It will inform you in real time what miles per gallon your car is getting. (Hybrids already come equipped with them.) Gerdes, who says he once got 127 mpg (over the course of 90 miles) in a 2004 Toyota Prius, believes drivers can realize a 15 percent savings on fuel overnight by buying and heeding a gauge.
It used to be said that driving with the air conditioner on was a big fuel waster. But in all but the oldest jalopies with primitive air conditioners, that turns out to be an old wives’ tale. “The air conditioners that we have now are highly efficient,” says Reed from Edmunds. “Yes, they do take more power from the engine, but we’re talking about 1 or 2 percent.” The alternative of driving with the air conditioner off and the windows open doesn’t offer a significant gain in gas mileage. On the contrary, when Edmunds conducted road tests to measure whether the altered aerodynamics of driving with the windows open impacted gas mileage, they noticed a decline in fuel economy if all the windows and the sunroof were open.
Driving experts say there’s no need to wait for years to benefit from the new fuel-efficiency law. BIKER LOBBYISTS MEET WITH NTSB
A meeting was arranged with the Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board on November 28, 2007 by James D. ?Doc? Reichenbach II, State President of ABATE of Florida, Inc. and Chairman of the Board of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists. NCOM and ABATE invited the Motorcycle Riders Foundation?s lobbyist and Vice-President of Government Relations Jeff Hennie to attend the meeting also to discuss the NTSB?s recent recommendations that all states enact mandatory helmet laws, as well as future and past developments in motorcycle safety.
The lobbying team met with Mark V. Rosenker, NTSB Chairman, and Robert Sumwalt, NTSB Vice Chairman. ?NCOM, ABATE and the MRF explained our views on this subject with extreme prejudice that helmets are not saving lives,? said Reichenbach. ?Facts and figures were presented to the board for their review.?
The gist of the 3-hour summit is that the NTSB will look into the discrepancies that NHTSA has been putting out in their statistics and will report their findings to the motorcycling community. While there was agreement on certain issues, the helmet issue is very far apart and no headway was made on either point of view.
?The fact remains that the NTSB stands behind their recommendations and supports them entirely,? reported Hennie. ?The MRF, NCOM and ABATE of Florida made it clear that we would continue to oppose any recommendations that call for personal protective equipment laws and crash mitigation.?
ABATE of Florida, Inc. and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists want to thank the MRF and Jeff Hennie for accepting our invitation to attend this meeting and work together on a united front.
LETTERS TO TROOPS RETURNED OR DESTROYED
Hundreds of thousands of holiday cards and letters thanking American troops for their sacrifice and wishing them well never reach their destination. They are returned to sender or thrown away unopened.
Since the Sept. 11 attacks and the anthrax scare, the Pentagon and the Postal Service have refused to deliver mail addressed simply to “Any Wounded Soldier” for fear terrorists or opponents of the war might send toxic substances or demoralizing messages.
Mail must be addressed to a specific member of the armed forces – a rule that pains many well-meaning Americans this Holiday season.
Last season, despite the rule, officials say as many as 450,000 pieces of mail not addressed to anyone in particular managed to reach Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington. But they were returned or, if they had no return address, were thrown out altogether, because the hospital lacked the manpower to open and screen all the unsolicited mail.
USO spokesman John Hanson said that like the military, the nonprofit service organization does not deliver unopened mail to unspecified recipients. He said the USO worries about security as well as hateful messages from war critics.
The USO is one of the organizations the military is encouraging people to support with donations as an alternative to sending cards to unspecified soldiers. The military is also referring people to the American Red Cross and a Defense Department Web site where supporters have posted thousands of messages to troops.
IS YOUR MOTORCYCLE GIVING YOU CANCER?
Author Randall Dale Chipkar has published a book called ?Motorcycle Cancer?? in which he speculates that radiation from motorcycle engines could be a modern day “Black Plague”.
Saying that the prostate is one of the closest delicate glands invaded by the radiation along with the colon and neighboring organs, Chipkar a few years ago was going to buy his dream cycle, but he placed his extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic field (EMF) Guass meter over one of the seats of an idling bike and was shocked to see the extremely high radiation readings.
“It’s a paradox that thousands of motorcycle riders participate in fundraiser rides for cancer awareness when the event itself may be causing cancer…I have met countless avid motorcycle riders diagnosed with similar forms of cancers and disorders. All of these riders had a type of extremely low frequency electromagnetic field radiation shooting up from their motorcycle seats…The motorcycle industry needs to further investigate this EM danger and implement protective measures to minimize rider radiation exposure…People should not have to gamble with their health because they love riding motorcycles…Historically, organizations claimed ‘inconclusive proof’ concerning electromagnetic health issues. However, inconclusive proof does not mean that something is safe,” says Chipkar.
But critics of people such as Chipkar claim that these doom-and-gloom concepts regarding radiation have been heard before and have been conjured up since the 1950s, when atomic energy had firmly become embedded in Americans’ psyches, and they never amount to anything other than conspiracy theories.
The critics say that it is too easy to scare people about exposure to radiation because those who can gain from the fear mongering fail to make distinctions between different kinds and levels of radiation exposure.
FLORIDA BILL TARGETS ?THRILL RIDERS?
After an eye opening ride-along with the Florida Highway Patrol and witnessing motorcyclists pop wheelies, race along over 100 mph and dangerously disregard road rules, State Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera filed a bill in Tallahassee that would toughen penalties on speeding, stunt driving and hiding or flipping license plates.
“They’re just blatantly riding in excessive speeds, putting themselves in danger and putting other motorists in danger,” Lopez-Cantera said. “It’s just too much.”
Law enforcement officers said they are powerless to pursue them and are frustrated as they watch their tactics, like flipping the bike’s license plates so they can’t be traced. “That tag needs to be permanently attached to that motorcycle,” one FHP trooper said. “The problem has gotten worse. The laws need to be changed. The penalties need to be stiffer.”
Rep. Lopez-Cantera is trying to do that. “Something has to be done. They have to actually fear the law because right now they don’t,” he said, explaining that if his bill becomes law “They’ll lose their bike. Their motorcycle license will be revoked for 10 years, and it’s a mandatory arrest so they will go to jail.” The bill could come up for a vote next year.
UNEASY RIDERS: HORSES RISKIER THAN MOTORCYCLESHour-per-hour in the saddle, more riders are seriously injured riding horses than motorcycles. That is the surprising revelation of a new study from researchers at the University of Calgary, Canada.
The hospital admission rate associated with horse-riding injuries is 0.49 per 1,000 hours, compared to a rate of 0.14 per 1,000 hours of motorcycle riding, according to the study published in the American Journal of Surgery.
From 1995 to 2005, there were 7,941 trauma patients at Foothills, including 151 who were severely injured while horseback riding. Seven per cent of the riders died of their injuries and 45 per cent required surgery, the study said. Almost half of all riders who were seriously injured (48 per cent) suffered head injuries, and 54 per cent suffered chest injuries. Most riders were hurt by falling or being thrown from the horse, followed by being stomped or kicked.
The reason this happens, said Rob Mulloy, an assistant professor at the University of Calgary and co-author of the study, is that “horses are independent beings with their own agenda.” Not to mention that horses weigh up to 500 kilograms, move at a speed of up to 65 kilometers an hour, elevate riders up to three meters above ground and kick with a force of nearly one ton.
Dr. Mulloy, who is also a trauma surgeon, said he does not want to discourage people from riding, but hopes the study will serve as a wake-up call about the need to use protective equipment, especially helmets. “You know, cowboy hats are pretty useless,? he said, adding that he takes comfort in the fact that about half of rodeo riders now wear helmets and a large number of cowboys who drive cattle out of the hills are also helmeted.
AUSTRALIAN STATE OUTLAWS ?BIKIE GANGS?South Australia announced intentions to ban so-called ?bikie gangs? such as the Hells Angels and the Bandidos in what the government said would be the world’s toughest crackdown on ?terrorists within our community.?
South Australian Premier Mike Rann named eight motorcycle clubs he said were involved in murder, drug trafficking, prostitution, extortion and weapons smuggling. ?This is an evil within our nation and we in South Australia intend to lead Australia in the fight against bikie gangs,? he recently told reporters.
The Australian Crime Commission’s 2006 report found there were 35 outlaw motorcycle gangs in Australia, with 3,500 members in all six states last year. Rann said the ban would involve around 200 club members, as well as associates. Outlawed bikers would be prohibited from meeting or communicating, or risk five-year jail terms. ?We cannot find anywhere in the world where this level of response to bikie gangs has been taken,? he said.
Police would also be empowered to dismantle club headquarters and force members to account for any unexplained wealth or income. ?We are coming after them and we will hit them where it hurts by taking away their ill-gotten gains, their Harley-Davidsons and their liberty,? said state Attorney-General Michael Atkinson.
WEIRD NEWS: BLIND PEDESTRIANS FIGHT AGAINST ?SILENT? DEADLY HYBRIDS
Can hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles be dangerous? To blind pedestrians, the answer is ?Yes,? because they can be silent killers.
As manufacturers look for ways to improve the fuel efficiency of their vehicles, alternatives to relying solely on gasoline engines are being adopted for both cars and motorcycles. Companies are looking to gasoline-electric hybrids, diesel engines, all-electric vehicles and fuel cells.
But one negative impact of such vehicles is in regards to their near-silent operation in city driving. Since most hybrids turn off their gasoline engine during low-speed city driving and rely on electric motors for propulsion, the most noise that many people may hear from the vehicles are a slight electric wine and a hint of tire noise. Deemed too quiet, some electric and fuel cell motorbikes now even come equipped with an artificial audio ?vroom? with adjustable volume control.
Blind pedestrians have taken this issue to heart and are going after hybrids as they feel the silent vehicles pose a serious safety threat, and the U.S. National Federation of the Blind (NFoB) is putting the issue back to the forefront.
The NFoB has worked with the Association of International Auto Manufacturers (AIAM) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) to look into the possibility of forcing automobiles to emit recognizable sound at all time. The AIAM is even looking into “the possibility of setting a minimum noise level standard for hybrid vehicles,” according to safety director Mike Camissa.
The Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have expressed little interest in the idea.

BRITNEY SPEARS HITS MOTORCYCLIST
On Tuesday evening, November 13th, troubled entertainer Britney Spears hit and hospitalized a motorcycle-riding member of the paparazzi as she was trying to evade photographers at a Beverly Hills Hotel. The rider sustained serious injuries and was taken to Ceder-Sinai Medical Center.
?This came as Spears is already facing hit-and-run charges as well as claims that she ran a red light with her kids in the car while on a cell phone,? said a news report by Entertainment Hollywood. Britney’s driving has taken a bad turn ? the 25-year old singer has run over people three times in nearly a month, one of whom was a sheriffs deputy and two were paparazzi.
Spears appeared in court the following day at an emergency custody hearing with Kevin Federline. K-Fed?s attorney convinced LA Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon to ban Spears from driving with their kids. Federline has temporary custody of Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, because Spears has defied court orders.
