J&P JUNE BONANZA–ANAMOSA, Iowa ? WOW!! That is the best word to describe the two-day 30th anniversary bonanza planned for Saturday and Sunday, June 27-28 at J&P Cycles, outside Anamosa, Iowa.

In a town with a population of roughly 5,000 people, it?s not common to hold an event with attendance numbers close to or exceeding 15,000 people. Last year?s one day J&P Cycles? Annual Open House did just that. For that reason, the 30th Anniversary celebration has been stretched into a two-day extravaganza complete with more entertainment, more events and more fun!

One of the highlights of this Open House is sure to be the motorcycle builders who will be in attendance. Not one or two, but THREE well-known bike builders will be in Anamosa at J&P during this event. Cory Ness, Rick Fairless and Brian Klock will all be onsite, all weekend long, answering your questions, posing for photos and signing autographs.

j&p CoryNess

Cory Ness, son of famed bike builder Arlen Ness, has been a part of the bike building industry basically since birth. Now, as the chief designer behind Arlen Ness Enterprises, Cory is the president, running the day-to-day operations, designing new parts and accessories and still finding time to design his own bikes. Many of Cory?s personal creations have appeared on the covers and inside spreads of motorcycle magazines around the world.

j&p RICK FAIRLESS

Rick Fairless began his love interest with motorcycles at an early age. At 19, he went to work at his uncle?s paint store, working his way up the ladder. After growing tired of the paint business, he decided to go after his love of motorcycles and in 1996 opened an Easyriders franchise in Dallas. Today, Fairless runs Strokers Dallas, which sells Big Bear, Big Dog and Victory motorcycles and builds customs as well. Rick became even more well known when his business became the setting for the SPEED show, Texas Hardtails in 2005.

j&pKLOCK WERKS

Brian Klock found success in South Dakota with a full-time shop that builds various custom motorcycles. Open since 1997, Brian has found his niche with Klock Werks, building bikes and working with his line of custom parts, including bag fillers, bagger dashes, handlebars, speaker grilles, windshields and more. His wife, Laura, is by his side in business, serving as vice-president at Klock Werks. She also isn?t afraid to ride! Laura piloted the World?s Fastest Bagger to an AMA National Land Speed Record in 1996. The following year, she piloted the bike to a SCTA National Land Speed Record.

In addition to these great bike builders, meet and greet former American Thunder TV Hostess Michele Smith, motorcycle stunt rider Jason Britton and the Motorcycle Monster at the J&P Open House. The Daytona Harley-Davidson? Drill Team will be there as will the ILL Conduct Stunt Team. Meet with representatives from over 60 companies, see the Teresi Dyno Drag, Motorcycle Rodeo and much, much more!

We hope you?ll join us for our celebration June 27 and 28. It?s J&P?s chance to thank customers for their business, and has turned into the largest one day event in the Midwest! Don?t miss it!

J&P Cycles is the world?s largest catalog retailer of aftermarket parts and accessories for Harley-Davidson, V-Twin Cruiser, Sport Bike and Gold Wing motorcycles. BIKERNET OPENS OFFICIAL ZOO NEAR GRIFFITH PARK IN LOS ANGELES– A small zoo in Georgia obtained a very rare species of gorilla. Within a few weeks the gorilla, a female, became very difficult to handle. Upon examination, the veterinarian determined the problem. The gorilla was in heat.. To make matters worse, there was no male gorilla available.

Thinking about their problem, the Zoo Keeper thought of Bobby Lee Walton, a redneck part-time worker responsible for cleaning the animal cages. Bobby Lee, like most rednecks, had little sense but possessed ample ability to satisfy a female of any species.

The Zoo Keeper thought they might have a solution. Bobby Lee was approached with a proposition. Would he be willing to mate with the gorilla for $500.00?

Bobby Lee showed some interest, but said he would have to think the matter over carefully. The following day, he announced that he would accept their offer, but only under five conditions:

‘First’, Bobby Lee said, ‘I ain’t gonna kiss her on the lips.’ The

Keeper quickly agreed to this condition.

‘Second’, he said, ‘She must wear a ‘Dale Earnhardt Forever’ T-Shirt.’

The keeper again readily agreed to this condition.

‘Third’, he said, ‘you can’t never tell no one about this.’ The keeper

Again readily agreed to this condition.

‘Fourth’, Bobby Lee said, ‘I want all the children raised Southern

Baptist. ‘Once again it was agreed.

‘And last,’ Bobby Lee said, ‘I’ll need another week to come up with the $500.00

MIC Encourages Support Of Legislation To End Lead Ban–The Motorcycle Industry Council and the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America have announced their support for two new bills that would overturn the lead ban that resulted from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, which effectively stopped the sale of off-highway motorcycles and ATVs designed for kids 12 and under.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) does not appear likely to grant the Industry’s pending exclusion petitions, and as a result, the MIC has intensified efforts to get Congressional support for a legislative solution.

On March 17, Senator John Tester introduced S.608 to amend the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 to exclude secondary sales, repair services and certain vehicles ? including youth ATVs and motorcycles ? from the ban on lead in children’s products, and for other purposes.

On March 18, U.S. House Representatives, Rehberg, Burgess, Pomeroy and Simpson introduced H.R. 1587 to amend the lead prohibition provisions of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 to provide an exemption for certain off-highway vehicles and for other purposes.

The MIC is working with the sponsors to provide necessary relief to the powersports industry. “It’s time to start letting kids ride safely again on vehicles designed for their use, and finally put an end to this untimely economic debacle,” said Paul Vitrano, general counsel, Motorcycle Industry Council and Specialty Vehicle Institute of America. “We’re very pleased to see that Congressional action is being taken to end the ban, and we’re working with the bill sponsors to ensure these bills would provide immediate and critical relief to the powersports industry.”

Hey,

I’m going to jump right into the news. It cooled off today like some April fools weather bit. It’s supposed to be sunny, bright and riding weather. This is destined to be outstanding news, so let’s hit it. Then Sam Dixon is due to show up with Playboy model, Michelle Manhart, with a body-painting specialists, make-up and hair designers, and he’s planning to shoot her with our Salt Shaker.

I gotta dust off the bench and find a clean rag. Oh, here’s my hot tip for the day. I discovered a tap removal company here in LA. If you have a tap broken off in a part, you can send it to Jim Durish, and he’ll remove it. He calls in Electronic Disintegration. He’s also associated with Cunningham Rods. AMDwinner
Big Twin Motors are the first-ever Italiian winners of the European Championship

Italian builder scoops European Championship–An Italian competitor has won AMD’s Official European Championship of Custom Bike Building; the first time an Italian competitor has done so in a year that saw three Italian builders in the top ten.

Gigi Esposito and Luca Pizzano of Big Twin Motors from near Naples in Southern Italy repeated their January win of the AMD Championship Affiliate event, the Verona International Custom Show at Motor Bike Expo, Verona, Italy with “Panster”.

Second place was taken by former World and European Champion Stellan Egeland (SE Service, Sweden) with his radical departure, radical BMW, radical technology demonstrator “Harrier”.Third place went to Finland’s Andy Niemi/Flying Choppers whose much-admired and thoroughly convincing homage to early seventies choppers “Cloud 9” has been winning or placing at most of the events he’s shown it at since it made its winning debut at Twin Club MC’s Custom Bike Show in Sweden last year.

AMDwinners
The top ten places this year were shared among builders from seven different countries

As ever, the competitor-judged ‘Freestyle Class’ based AMD Official European Championship was generously staged on behalf of the market by Custom Chrome Europe at their popular annual Dealer Show, with Custom Chrome vendors putting up a whole slew of parts and parts credit prizes and Custom Chrome themselves underwriting the DHL bike freight vouchers worth some 5.000,00 euro each that the first three win for competing at this summer’s 6th annual Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building at Champions Park on Lazelle Street, Sturgis in August.

Our thanks to Custom Chrome, their hard working staff, to their vendors (which included a record number of new vendors for the firm at the show this year) and to our advertisers and Official Partners for helping make this event the annual institution it is.

The recession-defying second largest ever field of 116 outstanding custom bikes (from an all-time record 16 different countries) showed that the market is proving “robust” in the face of the negativity and concern that had worried it as the year started, and with Custom Chrome sources unofficially intimating that dealer parts and accessory sales for the weekend “may well turn out to be even better than last year” the central message from all the season’s trade shows so far, that “there is still good business to be done out there” has been yet again reinforced.

As has the general perception that in custom market terms at least, Europe is “The” market to be active in at this time.

Always a stunning showcase and hot-bed of cutting edge, best practice and radical new-thinking custom bike design and engineering, the common reaction to this year’s entry from competitors, vendors and dealers alike was that the standard in competition represented yet another new high.

Whether or not that was the case, the most significant and apparent impressions that the thousands who witnessed the weekend will take away with them is of a market that is changing, and changing for the better, right in front of our eyes.

AMDshowbuilding
Despite the recession, 116 bikes entered the competition from a record 16 countries

A market that is embracing performance engineering as central to the meaning of customizing as the 21st Century’s first decade draws to a close, and of a market that is going to be characterized by a massive diversity of styling as we enter the second decade.

A market where all possible trends will work side-by-side to attract more customers than ever into the lifestyle, rather than one where any one trend is dominant at the cost of all others, or where only one style of riding is considered “cool”.

Euro Cycle OEMs Seek Government Assistance–Motorcycle manufacturers in Europe want the European Commission and EU member states to help the motorcycle industry defy the economic crisis with measures similar to those devised for the car sector.

Members of ACEM, the professional body representing the interests of 12 manufacturers and 15 national associations in Europe, met recently at Ducati headquarters in Bologna, Italy, to discuss the situation.

The European Commission recently announced multiple initiatives to help Europe?s auto manufacturers fight the economic downturn. EU countries are offering billions of euros in aid to carmakers and the European Investment Bank, the 27-nation bloc?s lending arm, is stepping up loans for auto research in response to the downturn. At a March 1 meeting, EU heads of government ruled out a centralized rescue program for the car industry while pledging more coordination of national initiatives such as fleet-renewal programs and a possible increase in EIB research loans.

ACEM says, due to its similarities to the car sector, the motorcycle industry should be entitled to the same benefits.

?The motorcycle sector needs the same urgent and drastic measures aimed at preventing a prolonged period of recession, supporting manufacturing and continuing to drive forward the environmental goals that are shared by policy makers and manufacturers,? organization leaders announced following the meeting.

?Not unlike the car sector, the motorcycle industry is experiencing the same kind of problems and, despite our lesser size, we need the same kind of tools if are to successfully overcome this downturn,? said Stefan Pierer, ACEM President and CEO of KTM Sport Motorcycles.

New motorcycle registrations in Europe in 2008 were down 8% compared to 2007. Two-wheeler sales during the fourth quarter of 2008 were down 34% (down 42% for mopeds and down 28% for motorcycles) compared to the same period of 2007.

?Another pressing issue to resolve remains the limited access to credit due to the non-functioning of the financial market,? Pierer said. ?Action must be now taken without further delay to lift bureaucratic barriers and speed up implementation at national level. A coordinated European policy would not only ensure more fairness and respect for EU competition rules but – more importantly – greater efficiency in a single, European market.?

In other ACEM news, the organization unanimously confirmed Pierer as president of ACEM for another two-year term and welcomed two new members: BRP and ARGE2RAD (the Austrian association of motorcycle manufacturers and distributors).

BIG BEAR CHOPPERS INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION–In these times, companies are faced with big decisions with their business model, human and equipment resources, sales channel, and product development. Big Bear Choppers (BBC) is agile enough to successfully maneuver with the current environment, resulting in immediate growth and penetration in a global export sales channel, efficient lean manufacturing and fresh product design. Yet BBC?s brand equity is large enough to have an international brand recognition and presence, due to continued world wide media exposure, and growing positive viral customer word-of-mouth.

Big Bear Choppers has pursued aggressive expansion into foreign markets, and their 2009 business planning indicates close to 50% of planned turn-key motorcycle shipments will come from foreign markets, as the result of the slow domestic market and growing demand internationally. Single-line dealerships carrying the BBC brand of motorcycles are starting to sprout up more and more, with already established dealerships in countries like Australia, Canada and Switzerland -solely representing and selling Big Bear Choppers. Other existing international multi-line dealer body consists in countries like India, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Dubai, Taiwan, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, England, Germany, and Sweden. Current negotiations are in process covering additional strategic countries -not ready for public knowledge.

BBC is currently analyzing countries? Gross Domestic Product and targeting metropolitan shopping/urban areas of developed, or developing, countries with affluence and moderate-to-strong demand for luxury goods. And culturally, people across the world desire to ride an American chopper, to own a piece of cool Americana; we produce a product that is highly appealing, in-style, and in-demand world wide. Think of super-cars from Italy or electronics from Japan. Our American culture of choppers is powerful across the planet.

So what does this mean for you as a person living in the US? Our production and revenue is, and will continue to be strong, making it financially possible to continue in providing industry leading motorcycle designs through proper engineering. With survival on everybody?s minds lately, our mind-set is to expand the BBC Empire to the ends of the earth.

David Hope and Vroom Racing Support Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks, Real men CAN wear pink–David Hope and John Hammock of Vroom Racing have joined forces with Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks, BCFO, Springfield, MO. Hope will wear the Pink Ribbon for BCFO while competing in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class of the NHRA (National Hot Rod Assoc.) Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

Hope came up with the idea of sharing a marketing program with a non-profit for Vroom Racing. ?With the economy so unpredictable right now, we realized that a joint venture with such a great organization that serves our regional area would be a positive experience for both Vroom Racing and BCFO.?

Hope goes on to say, ?Our family business, Nevada Auto Mall is supportive and we will be having a fundraiser in August (when contributions are traditionally low) to kick off the Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Nevada Auto Mall will be contributing a portion of the cost of every oil change during August. We?ll also be selling pink ribbon magnetic decals for BCFO.?

Stephanie Lutes, Director of Development for BCFO was thrilled with the idea. ?We were kind of taken by surprise. The phone call and information on David Hope came at a great time in our fund raising efforts. Hope and Hammock will be at our office in April 28th to show us the new bike graphics and their NHRA race rig, we?re excited.?

Vroom Racing is supported by Red Line Oil, Brown Machinery, Lozano Brothers Porting, Route 66 Harley Davidson, World Wide Bearings.

MIC DRAFT LETTER TO CALIFORNIA LEGISLATOR REGARDING MOTORCYCLE SMOG TESTING–Dear Senator Pavley:

As stated on your website, SB 435 is intended to address the excessive emissions caused by the replacement of catalytic converters with more polluting ?custom? exhaust systems. To accomplish this objective, the bill would amend the Health and Safety Code to require biennial ?Smog Check? inspections for model year 2000 and newer motorcycles beginning on January 1, 2012. The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) agrees that the removal of catalysts on late-model motorcycles is a problem, but for the reasons described below, we are certain that adding motorcycles to the Smog Check program will not be an effective solution.

The fundamental problem with attempting to prevent catalyst removal through biennial inspections is that it takes, on average, less than one hour to change a motorcycle exhaust system. The vast majority of owners who have removed catalysts can be expected to reinstall the catalyst only for as long as it takes to pass Smog Check once every two years.

There are three other problems with a change in legislation that causes model year 2000 and newer motorcycles to be treated just like cars and trucks under the Smog Check program. First, Health and Safety Code section 44012 specifies that the test performed on all vehicles registered in ?enhanced? areas ?shall require, at a minimum, loaded mode dynamometer testing.? The dynamometers used in Smog Check stations were not designed for motorcycles and it has never been demonstrated that high-volume dynamometer testing can be safely and cost-effectively done for motorcycles. Being ?single track? vehicles, motorcycles are unstable when operated on a chassis dynamometer. Failure to properly restrain the front wheel significantly increases the risk of accidents.

The second problem is that dynamometer tests will not be effective in identifying catalyst removal. Unlike passenger cars, motorcycles are certified based on each manufacturer?s fleet average emissions: a particular model is allowed to have higher emissions if another model has sufficiently low emissions to allow the average of a manufacturer?s production to meet the applicable standards. This makes it infeasible to make a pass-fail decision based on the measured emissions from a particular model. The problem that the bill is attempting to address (i.e., the removal of catalysts) can be more reliably determined through a simple visual inspection.

The third problem with treating motorcycles like cars and trucks is that the motorcycles most responsible for excessive emissions would be exempted from testing. As the bill is written, motorcycles would be subject to the provisions of existing law that exempt from testing ?all motor vehicles six or less model-years old.? This provision makes perfect sense for cars and trucks because there is an overwhelming body of evidence that very few cars or trucks emit excessively until they are more than six years old. However, catalyst removal is just as much of a problem with new motorcycles as with older models. In addition, newer motorcycles are ridden much more frequently. By the time they are more than six years old, annual average mileage accumulation has dropped significantly.

There is an alternative to Smog Checks that would be much more effective in preventing the removal of catalysts from motorcycles. With MIC?s encouragement, the Air Resources Board recently adopted a regulation allowing the sale of catalyst-equipped aftermarket exhaust systems. Until this recent change, it was illegal for a manufacturer of aftermarket exhaust systems to sell a system with a catalyst even if the aftermarket system was as effective as the original equipment system. Under the new regulation, motorcycle owners can customize their exhaust systems without increasing emissions. Now what is needed is an incentive for owners to use emissions-legal systems every day (not just one day every two years).

For more than two years, MIC has been working with the Society of Automotive Engineers on the development of a new sound test procedure for on-road motorcycles that will discourage the replacement of catalyst-equipped exhaust systems with unbaffled pipes. The new procedure is expected to be published within a few months. Legislation allowing the California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies to take enforcement action based on this new procedure not only will protect the public from obnoxiously loud motorcycles, but also will be highly effective in identifying motorcycles that have had a catalyst equipped exhaust system replaced by a system with unbaffled pipes.

MIC would be pleased to work with your office and the American Lung Association on the specific changes to the Vehicle Code that would accomplish the objectives of SB 435 using the new sound test procedure. We have draft language available, if you are interested in pursuing this alternative approach.

Sincerely,
Pamela Amette
Vice-President

wheels thru time build

WHEELS THROUGH TIME ANTIQUE MOTORCYCLE UPDATE–Several months back, we were tracking the progress of one of our latest bike builds here on my blog. The bike being built was quiet a rare one — a 1942 Harley-Davidson FL Knucklehead. We captured much of the build on video, and as of this week, you can see them in our Time Machine Video Archives!

The project at hand came to my doorstep in an interesting way. One day at the museum, a fella pulled up with truck and trailer, came up and introduced himself, and let me know he had something that may be of interest to me. After talking a bit, we made our way out to his trailer and, to my surprise, he uncovered a1942 Knucklehead in complete and running condition. “Its for sale” he said. And after a bit of talking, we made a deal.

Wheels through time

The bike looked good at first, but after a few days to look at it, we decided it wasn’t all that I thought it was. I’m telling you, this was a real “look before you leap” story. After removing a few parts, and then a few more, then a few more, we had the bike torn down to a bare frame and set of engine cases. Not where I expected to be!!!

FROM BIKERNET METRIC, What is going on in the Metric world– Well, our friends over at AFT Customs have created a new website (www.aftcustoms.com). This site has many of the bikes that Jim Giuffra and his team have built over the years and the new site shows ALL of the girls from the modeling agency.

Probably the coolest part of the site is the new videos that they have put up. The videos show the building of the World Champion bike, Er Hed and the photo shoot around it. Big deal? They shot the bike in a mine approximately 600 feet under ground!

If you are an Easyriders reader, make sure you check out the March issue. Andrea, one of the AFT Customs Girls is the Fox Hunt winner and she sits poised on Scott Hultquists? Mas Te Kill Ya bike. If you are going to the Arlen Ness show in a couple of weeks, bring your Easyriders mag and come by the AFT Customs? booth. Andrea will be there in person to sign the photo spread.

Also, I have a great photo shoot of a hot lil? red head on a CB 750 chopper. Give me a couple of days and it will be in the features section. The builder learned how to fabricate on this bike and has since gone on to build some really twisted frames at a very reasonable price?and, they will build them to fit HD or Metrics at your request.

A good buddy of mine has also expanded into the bike world from the hot rod industry. Todd Evans, winner of several awards at this year?s Sacramento Easyriders, has been building bikes for years but mostly as a hobby or to help out buddies. Now is going full throttle into the two wheeled world. I will keep you posted on what is going on. He has a new bagger comin? our way, a Sporty and a bitchin? Busa! He also has a paint exchange program that I am taking advantage of.

I will show the before and after when I receive them in a about a week?hurry up UPS?I am dyin? on the vine! Look out, this riding season is going to be kick ass?.I can feel it in my old bones.

Biking In India, Part 1

India

The Bombay Travel Woes:

Being a biker is no special feature to most commuters on Indian roads. In a country where population outnumbers job opportunities, people are more than willing to travel miles to reach their place of work. Real estate rates in the premium South Bombay area are so exorbitant that the average employee has to live in far-flung suburbs and uses public transport to reach the offices. The estimated population of Bombay is 12.6 million. (Census is carried out once every 10 years by the Government. The population of India crossed the billion mark at the turn of the millennium.) There is a huge influx into the city from various parts of India since Bombay is reputedly the financial capital of India. This is the city that never sleeps. You can get food & cigarettes at roadside stalls past 2 a.m.

The local trains ((Central Railway & Western Railway ) are the lifelines of the Bombayite commuter. Next come the Government run buses (BEST), which have the widest network of routes and stops within the city; among the best in Asia. The local trains and buses stop their services only between 2am and 4am. Such is the demand for transport that the authorities can afford to ply their services at odd hours. A double-decker bus is as ordinary a sight here as in London.

Using Bombay’s Roads:

Though most of the major roads have been upgraded from tar to concrete there is a clear bias between the affluent South Bombay and the congested suburbs. The working class living in the suburbs have to face potholes, Municipal / telephone / gas workers digging up roads ad hoc, overflowing gutters/drains, open manholes, bold traffic violation and bolder corrupt cops.

If you fantasize about riding your steed during a beautiful Indian monsoon, don’t. Monsoon travel is hell in Bombay irrespective of whether you use roads, rails or even airplanes. If you want to see how the roads look during monsoon Google Images for “Afghanistan after the bombing”, that is how bad Bombay’s roads become after the onslaught of rains.

India5

But there are a few good highways and bridges in Bombay, which in the early morning or late night becomes a privileged spot for racing among the youth whose parents have too much money to keep it to themselves.

India3

Media:

Bombay is also the Cine capital of India. The city which produces the most number of movies, mostly in Hindi language; another attraction for people to arrive to Bombay in the hopes of becoming a celebrity. A Hindi language movie “Dhoom ” set off a craze for superbikes and now you can spot the imported Hondas, Kawasakis and Yamahas on city streets. The villain biker/robber in the movie played by actor John Abraham has signed on as a brand ambassador for Yamaha . The media and the general public do not view biking as a negative trait yet. It is a common & economical means for daily commute.

India4

Current Indian Bike Fare:

As said above – ‘common & economical’ is what defines the majority of bikes sold in India, a major drawback for power enthusiasts. The manufacturers wish to have huge sales by reaching & appealing to the masses. The masses need an affordable bike with low maintenance and high mileage. So most of the bikes with million plus sales figures are 100cc and 125cc sissies. The market for two-wheelers (motorcycles, scooters, non-geared scooterette, mopeds) in India is estimated at 5.5 million annually (Two-wheeler Prices ).

Hero-Honda (a joint venture of Hero Group with Honda Japan) leads this 100cc segment with its Splendor and Passion range priced at Rs.44000 and Rs.46000 respectively (US Dollar 1 = Rupees 43.56). These two bikes still have consistent admirers even after years of their launch (Splendor was launched in 1994). Recently Hero-Honda re-launched these two with better-styled upgrades such as dual-tone paint job with the nametag Splendor+ and Passion+ (sic +). Hero Honda has been the undisputed market leader for a long time and now faces a threat from Bajaj and its own partner Honda (Hero Honda Sales and Income. Note: India uses the measurement unit of ‘lakhs’ and ‘crores’ instead of Million for currency denomination. 1,00,000 is One Lakh and 1,00,00,000 is One Crore).

Bajaj Auto Ltd has the next biggest market share in motorcycles and is closing in on the market leader (Bajaj Sales ). While in the west and south India Bajaj's market share as compared to Hero Honda is 1:2 and 1:4 respectively, in the north and east it is close to 1:1. Their Bajaj Discover DTS-i 125cc is available at Rs.50000 with an electric start, disc brake and alloy wheels.

It is leading in sales currently for the 125cc segment this year.

India8

There is no competitor matching such specifications at such a price. Discover gives 65 km/ltr. Before ‘Discover’ they promoted ‘Boxer' which was available at a very competitive price of Rs40,000 for the low end segment. Bajaj’s other successful product is the Pulsar available as a 150cc or a 180cc. Pulsar has been judged as the best stunt bike made in India. But the two variants lack product differentiation in terms of their styling.

Bajaj has already announced that 2006 will see the launch of Pulsar DTS-Fi 250cc with many industry firsts (in India) such as rear-wheel disc brake, led tail lights, twin stocked headlamps (one parabolic & another projector type), larger diameter front disc brake, etc.

If Bajaj is able to attract a following for power bikes then Pulsar 250cc will usher a new era and a new personality for the ‘Indian Biker’. Honda, which had launched its solo venture Honda M&S India Pvt. Ltd., would have to match the new Pulsar and ditto for Yamaha India. TVS has already launched the TVS Apache with similar specifications and pricing of the existing Pulsar. TVS had a good run with its 150cc Fiero and economical TVS Victor in the past (TVS Sales ).

India7

Honda (solo venture) made a disappointing maiden entry with the conservative, fuel-efficient Unicorn 150cc. A good slogan ‘Be a Wing Rider’ had few takers. Such attempts to grab the mileage-conscious as well as the power enthusiast are bound to fall on their ugly fiberglass arse. Yamaha’s Fazer 125cc was good on looks but failed to match Pulsar’s performance. Its poor-man’s cruiser called Enticer 125cc is now out of production. Having ridden my Yamaha Enticer since 2003 I have to say it is lightweight (115 Kg.) and easy to handle, though calling it a cruiser is a stretch. It is a totally run-down version of the international Yamaha Royal Star. The new cheap cruiser is Bajaj’s Avenger (Rs.70000), which has the same styling of its erstwhile expensive Eliminator except that it now has 180cc DTS-i engine of the Pulsar.

India2

Bajaj looks set to capture the biking interests of Indians. Its only negative feedback so far is poor after-sales service at Authorised Service Centers. On the after-sales front no one beats Hero Honda, which has the widest network of dealers and just about any mechanic is able to fix your Hero Honda product. Also Bajaj Pulsar aficionados complain that the 180cc variant has a long waiting list even though the customer is shelling out Rs.8000 extra for the performance ride. Dealing with such issues now will ensure Bajaj’s home base lead as the market opens to bigger bikes.

The Original Indian Cruiser:

So now you think that the Indian biker is a real wuss who rides a snail and locks his wallet before visiting the gas station. Well, let me introduce you to a mid 19th century brand – Royal Enfield . They set shop in England as Enfield Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and registered as ‘Royal Enfield Manufacturing Co. Ltd.’ in 1893 with the trademark “Made like a gun”. They went from making needles to pedal-cycle to a quadricycle by 1897 and even a motorcar by 1904.

Riding a motorcycle was a painful experience for bikers back in 1909 and the hobby was never meant to catch on.

Royal Enfield surprisingly launched a 2¾ hp V twin engine shown at a motorcycle show that year. Soon by 1914, Royal Enfield was supplying motorcycles to the British War Department for the First World War with various models under production.

The Indian debut happened in 1949 with the 350cc Bullet when Madras Motors started assembling the Royal Enfield motorcycles to supply it to the Indian Army. The Bullet would disappear from most regions of the biking world but Enfield India Company thumped along. In 1994 the ailing company renewed its reach after they were acquired by the Eicher Group.

Today the ‘Bullet’ is regarded as an icon of Indian biking. It has the widest following among military and police professionals.

The new slogan “Everyone makes way for the Bullet” is winning a new generation of cult followers.

The new management intends to create a brand image through clubs, planned tours , branded accessories and merchandise to recreate the type of success that Harley-Davidson has in USA. Their original 350cc & 500cc Bullet is still sold with its sturdy cast-iron engine generating the unique thump. The more attractive newer brands are the 350cc Thunderbird and Machismo models. They have an all aluminum lean burn engine and constant vacuum carburetor for improved performance (this engine sadly lacks the classic thump but warms up faster than the cast iron engine).

India10
Nope, it’s not a Bullet, but we’ll find a shot soon.

Also if you want a custom chopper in India the most recommended bike for a chop is of course the Bullet. Their fans, known as ‘The Bulls’ or ‘The R.E.D.S.’ (Royal Enfield Discoverers) are a class apart (Popular Bullet club in Bombay and one in neighboring Pune city). Only the Bullet can boast of maximum biker clubs in India and rates highest in customer satisfaction . Any tourist interested in touring India on a bike goes for the Bullet Standard 350cc or 500cc iron engine. For a 50 year old technology that is indeed impressive.

So if anyone reading this does not admire the fiberglass pansy bikes on their street, get out and get a Royal Enfield motorcycle. Whether you drive on the road or off it, riding this ‘King on Wheels’ is a pleasure uncomparable to any destination you will reach.

India11
We asked Vicky from Killer Machines Choppers what she thought of your article. She wants to see that Bullet and a shot of your riding it.

Motorcycle group protests actions by State Patrol–SEATTLE – A motorcycle rights group is demanding answers from the Washington State Patrol.

They say during an annual rally at the Capitol this year, a state trooper recorded the license plate numbers of those attending.

The sergeant was seen wandering through the parking lot and using a voice recorder to take down the license plate numbers from motorcycles. At one point he even backs into the bushes to get a better look at the tags.

“Seeing an officer from the State Patrol in the bushes, doing this is just shocking,’ said Martin Fox, an attorney for the motorcycle rights group ABATE.

Fox says ABATE members were inside the Capitol building, meeting with their legislators when the trooper recorded the license tags.

“My concern is anyone going to the Legislature to have their views heard are being put on a list and it’s not what we do in America,” said Fox.

The State Patrol says rival gang members were seen riding onto the Capitol campus and this recording was just good police work. “Motorcycle gangs do have a record of violence against each other, and if something broke out it would be nice to have a record of who was here,” said Sgt. Freddy Williams.

“They want to know why it was being done and where this information was going,” said Fox.

“I can see how it might be cause for concern, but your license is public record, public knowledge, it’s there for everyone to look at,” said Williams.

License plate numbers are there for everyone to see, but even the State Patrol acknowledges that if you saw someone recording your plate number, you’d want to know why and just how that information would be used.

UNCLE MONKEY REPORT–What?s in the box?A friend of mine is anxiously awaiting the arrival of his brand new Road King Classic. He called the dealer to tell him that he wanted to keep the box that the bike comes in. It?s not an uncommon request as many riders ask for it. I just don?t understand it.

Often before the bike is even fired up for the first time at the dealership, the person has had a sundry list of parts and accessories installed on the bike. The bike becomes an extension of themselves and their personalities.

The box, it would seem, becomes worthless. (I?m sure all you guys who bought a 100th anniversary ?collector? bike and left it in the crate will one day be able to recoup the financial investment.) More often then not the bike is ridden home, the box collapsed so that it fits into the backseat of the car, or worse yet laid on the floor with the bike loaded on top of it. Nice tire marks.

Once home these boxes are tucked away in a dark corner of the garage never to be seen again, much like that chopper you vowed you?d ride until the bitter end. Others are hung with care on the garage wall for all to see and to collect dents and scuffs from the kids playing, spray can paint tests, and oil and grease smudges before being pulled off to be thrown under the wife?s car while you repair it.

I?m not saying it?s wrong, I?m just saying I don?t understand it.

COLLECTOR CARS TO BE OFFERED IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES AT ANNUAL CLASSIC CAR AUCTION OF MICHIGAN–From pre-war toy trucks, to Evel Knievel?s personal motorcycle, to a nine-ton 1950 Flxible Motor Coach, RM?s ?Classic Car Auction of Michigan? event will offer a wide selection of rare collector vehicles at the Rock Financial Showplace, Novi, Michigan, April 25 & 26

Ypsilanti, Michigan – March 24, 2009 ? The classic car hobby transcends generations of collectors who enjoy the thrill of the hunt for memorable cars and trucks of their younger days, many of which can be found at auction events such as RM?s ?Classic Car Auction of Michigan? event at the Rock Financial Showplace, Novi, Michigan, April 25 & 26.

One of the largest collector vehicles ever to be offered by RM is a factory-built 1950 Flxible Private Luxury Motor Coach which will be up for bids at this event along with hundreds of other unique cars, trucks and motorcycles.

Easily recognized for their bulbous streamlined bodies and split windshields, the fifties era Flxible often made cameos in many famous Hollywood movies such as The Wild One, Vertigo, North by Northwest and Key Largo.

This remarkably original recreational vehicle on offer at the Novi event is one of only five examples built and was designed for its first owners the Slawik family at cost of $20,700 in 1950. Most notably, this is not a converted passenger bus but a purposely designed luxury coach that represents the epitome of 1950s travelling elegance. In 1958 the Flxible was parked in proper heated storage until it was acquired by its present owners in 1995.

The Flxible retains its original Buick eight-cylinder engine and Koehler generator and is equipped with air brakes, power steering, a roof-mounted air conditioner. The lavishly designed interior features mahogany paneling and stainless steel trim. Other accoutrements include a full galley, private intercom, Pullman-style bathroom, special lighting and a circa-1956 Chrysler Hi-Fi radio/record player. Benefiting from careful ownership, this unique, two-owner land cruiser runs and drives as new and has recorded a mere 24,000 original miles.

For the two-wheel collector, this event will offer a one-of-a-kind motorcycle custom-built for the legendary American daredevil, Robert Craig ?Evel? Knievel. More than just a showman, Knievel was one of the highest paid entertainers at the time and rewarded himself with numerous luxury cars, jets, yachts and of course, motorcycles. One of his favorite rides was a personalized 1980 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead Golden Eagle that features genuine 24K gold plating and inlays. This special bike is being offered complete with a copy of the bill of sale from Evel Knievel and photos.

Some of the smaller auction lots include several highly prized pre-WWII metal toys produced by the Buddy L and Steelcraft companies such as an early 1920 International Harvester Truck, a rare 1920 Tri-Motor US Mail Plane and an operating 1928 Little Jim Mack Steam Shovel. The ten examples offered at this event are from a private collection and have been properly restored to their original condition.

In support of Michigan’s rich automotive history, representatives from the MotorCities National Heritage organization will be on site to share the latest news on the many exciting events held in Michigan during Autopalooza August including the Meadow Brook Concours, Festival of Speed & Style and the Woodward Dream Cruise. www.autopaloozaaugust.com

The Classic Car Auction of Michigan weekend kicks off with a vehicle preview on Friday, April 24th from 3pm to 8pm. Doors open for the auction at 9am on Saturday and Sunday, with the auction action starting at 10am each day, and ending at 8pm Saturday and 4pm on Sunday.

Ending

ANOTHER JAMMED WEEK–I did something unique this week. As an admitted mad man, I set goals weekly. My first major goal this year was to publish my next book, but not just any book. I’m going to begin a series of books based on one character, Chance Hogan.

kimmy daytona
Kimmy will be a featured bartender at the Broken Spoke this year. Tell her you’re from Bikernet, for a special deal.

I wrote this bastard beginning three years ago in the Horse in monthly installments about the adventures of Vince and Chance, then decided to modify it. That stumbling obstacle was similar to turning a long Denver Chopper into a motocross bike. It wasn’t easy. Last summer I spent a long weekend rolling through chapters, while locked in a mountain cabin, and I roamed close to the manuscript I wanted, but not close enough. Over SuperBowl weekend I snuck away to Primm Nevada, thanks to brother Joe, and locked myself in a room for 4 days (I did escape for the SB party–helluva game). I returned home, attempted to back up my computer and lost everything.

Okay, so I could have fired myself, gone on a drunken rampage and shot all the animals in the headquarters, or just buckled down and hit the keys once more–knowing full well that the next run at each chapter would be even better. That brings us up to date. This week I hit the Monday and Tuesday Bikernet content hard , so I could turn the phone off on Wednesday and hammer through one chapter after another. Thursday is news day, do-or-die. Friday and Saturday I’ll hide out again. Hopefully by Sunday I’ll be in good shape again.

Don’t miss Gootie’s StreetWalker Exhaust tech on the home page. It’s got character, or more than one..

I’m no Tom Zimmeroff, when it comes to writing skills, but I want this to be my best goddamn book yet. Then next week I’ll meet with Chris Kallas and discuss the cover art. I would like to have printed copies sizzling in my hands by June. There’s the goal for this weekend.

There’s the Black Bike Wheel on the Paughco Factory Racer frame with Avon Tyres. I’m still working on the tank, below. Not sure it’s straight.

Next week I will deliver on a 5-Ball Factory racing report. I’ve made considerable progress in the shop. We have two engine techs boiling to the surface, one from Rev Tech and one on the massive JIMS 131-inch monster. We’ll bring you an I-beam frame built custom from Conspiracy Cycles in Michigan and a package arrived from Scotty today. He lives on the road and we’re going to devote a section on Bikernet to his road tales. So hang on. There’s never a dull moment on Bikernet.

BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS – I HATE THESE TITLES AND I AM HUNGRY.–Sin Wu

Mongols
Here’s official news about the Mongols in the U.S.

AUSTRALIAN CLUBS DRAW MORE HEAT DURING AIRPORT FIGHT– New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees says it is too late for peace talks to stop an escalating and fatal feud between five rival bike clubs, but a self proclaimed ‘gang expert’ says the suggestion may be the only solution.

The national president of the Comancheros’ motorcycle club, Mick Hawi, yesterday called for the talks after months of unrest, shootings and fatal assaults came to a head in Sunday’s fatal brawl at Sydney Airport’s domestic terminal.

Four Comancheros members have been charged with affray over the fight and refused bail. They were arrested while trying to leave the terminal in taxis after 29-year-old Anthony Zervas was pummeled to death with a metal pole. In response, Mr Hawi has temporarily banned the club’s members from wearing gang colours or riding motorbikes.

The police Gang Squad has made it clear it is not negotiating with the bikers and has put them on notice, saying officers are concentrating on every step they take.

But Monash University researcher Arthur Veno, who has spent a large part of his career studying motorcycle clubs, says peace talks are the only way forward. He hopes bikers will create a “confederation of clubs” where they thrash problems out at weekly or monthly meetings.

Veno knowingly or unknowingly, is being seen to be echoing an initiative that had already been put into place (by the clubs) and was in the process of being discussed and, potentially ratified and acted upon. Veno says a model that has worked in north-east America allows just two members from each club to attend the meeting. “The model that is on offer, as I would see it, is that the bikies clean their act up through a form of what’s called the confederation of clubs or they face the fact that they’re going to be under incredible police scrutiny, which is in nobody’s interest, particularly the majority of non-criminal members,” he said. But the researcher believes the Comancheros’ push for peace is not sincere.

“They are directly under the hammer and quite frankly, I have very little trust in the Comancheros, based on my experiences with them in terms of their intentions…” he said. “I would be cynical but nevertheless, I would take the opportunity to do what they say in the good faith that it would allow for the establishment of a confederation-of-clubs model.”

Rees unconvinced NSW Premier Nathan Rees is not convinced peace talks will solve anything. He is planning to fast-track a crackdown on motorcycle clubs, based on South Australian laws that treat bikies as terrorists. “The key departure from history here has been the spilling over into the public domain of violence,” he said. “We will not tolerate that and that’s why… we’ll be reviewing existing laws with a view to bringing [new legislation] in as quickly as possible.”

Under the planned laws, motorcycle clubs would be outlawed, the type of employment bikers can seek would be restricted and police intelligence networks would be expanded. Mr Rees says it is extraordinary that suggestions have been made that police officers should provide protection during any planned talks, but Dr Veno says peace talks are more likely to succeed than the planned legislation.

“Our only hope really is to grab the bull by the horns and try these lateral kinds of moves,” he said. “If we do this, we’ve got a chance at actually bringing alongside a peace and a sense of public safety, which is the real problem when you look at the amount of crime that the clubs are involved in. “For example, in NSW, all ‘gang’ crime accounts for 0.6 per cent of total crime. Now, how much resources do we want to pour down that tube? “I think if we can get the bikies up and into a peace negotiation situation, which results in a functional confederation of clubs where wars are diverted, that’s a hell of a lot cheaper and a hell of a lot more effective than legislation.”

Former Wisconsin State Senator set to complete one million mile ride on Same motorcycle–Hupy & Abraham, S.C. Announces Landing Party on April 4, at noon, to Commemorate First Time Anyone Has Ridden One Million Miles on the Same Harley-Davidson

Milwaukee, Wis. ? The law firm of Hupy & Abraham, S.C. announced today a landing party set for Saturday, April 4 to welcome former Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien back to Wisconsin as he becomes the first person to ride one million miles on the same Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The feat will earn him a world record from the Iron Butt Association, an international group that oversees and governs safe, long-distance motorcycle riding challenges.

Hupy & Abraham, S.C. is the sole sponsor of the ride, providing more than $5,000 to offset the travel and maintenance costs. Zien is a longtime friend of attorney Michael Hupy, president of Hupy & Abraham, S.C., and a former client of the firm. Attorney Hupy also testified before the Wisconsin Senate Judiciary, Corrections and Privacy Committee in 2006 in favor of Act 466, the right of way violation bill requested by ABATE. Zien was chairman of the Judiciary Committee at that time.?We are excited to see the culmination of Dave?s journey next month,? said attorney Hupy. ?It will be a monumental occasion when he caps the million mile mark in Wisconsin.?

Zien?s odometer is expected to hit one million miles as he rides into Hal?s Harley-Davidson in New Berlin, Wis. at noon on April 4. Zien will be joined by John “Rogue” Herlihy, a Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame member, Bruce Arnold, an Iron Butt Bun Burner 4500 Trifecta title holder, and Tony Sanfelipo, Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame member, founder of ABATE of Wisconsin and 16-year employee of Hupy & Abraham, S.C., as he travels the more than 1,400 miles from Melbourne, Fla. to Milwaukee, Wis. Dozens of Wisconsin Patriot Guard riders will also escort Zien on a route lined with over 100 American flags as he completes the final leg of his journey. The celebratory event will include remarks from the president of the Iron Butt Association and local elected officials, as well as a check presentation from Hupy & Abraham, S.C. for a $5,000 donation to a veteran?s organization of Zien?s choice in honor of his work as a champion of veteran?s rights and Marine combat veteran.

There will also be a surprise announcement made at this celebration that you won?t want to miss.

The landing party is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit www.hupy.com and click Dave Zien?s photo on the homepage.

ALAN LEE and the Chopper Challenge MONSTER ENERGY DRINK BIKE–We are in the “Pre-Production” phase of season II of, The Chopper Challenge. Most of the builder spots are filled with 2 or 3 that could swing a couple of ways.

At the moment, we are targeting May-June for filming to begin with a (tentative) release date of Aug-Sep 2009. We are in the trenches negotiating with the new 9 proposed brands that will represent each episode/build.

The audience will be treated to a few new twists to the show such as a “Chopper Girl Model Search” where we’ve picked 9 girls to drive the Chopper Challenge delivery truck (this years truck is a radical fab and is aptly named “Lucky 13” “Bubba the Truck” from season one, will also have appearances as well as The Chopper Challenge Semi, as we travel from shop to shop, etc.) allowing the audience to vote for their favorite “Pin-Up Girl”…

We are expecting big things for this season with the addition of our trucking sponsor (Keyboard Carriage) who have provided us with an awesome custom semi-truck fully dedicated to carrying our bikes from the show to all of the major motorcycle events in the country (appearances this year: Sturgis, Vegas Bike Week, Daytona Biketober Fest, Daytona Bike Week, and Lacoinia to date, etc.) Working very hard to make the show the best it can be and in a timely fashion!

American Motorcycle Dealer

Fairchild Corporation Files Chapter 11–The parent company of the business that private labels some of Harley-Davidson’s apparel (among other OEs), Fairchild Corporation of McLean, Virginia, has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Reorganization.

The company said that it planned to seek court approval that would “allow it to continue to conduct its business without interruption” and that the company “expects that it will continue to manage its properties and operate its business” on a “debtor-in-possession” basis.

Fairchild entered the motorcycle apparel industry in 2003 when it bought private label contracts (such as that with Harley) and significant US (Intersport Fashions West) and German/international motorcycle apparel distribution, design, manufacturing and retail operations from the troubled Eurobike conglomerate in Germany, after that business had itself gone bankrupt following a decade of rapid expansion.

Industry observers are saying that the present recession and impacts from elsewhere in its portfolio have combined with the always highly competitive nature of the motorcycle apparel market, with its notoriously low margins relative to capital and debt requirements, to make it difficult for the Aerospace parts distributor and property owner to maintain investment levels and profitable trading in its motorcycle apparel industry businesses.

In January Fairchild sold 51 percent of its ownership of the 95-store German Polo motorcycle apparel chain in a deal headed up by long-time Polo Managing Director Klaus Esser. A week before its filing, it fully sold its other European retail chain, Hein Gericke, in a deal led by a four-strong British/German management buy-out team.www.fairchild.com

BIKERNET CODE CORRECTION DISPUTE–Last week Renegade wrote: I’ve always been bothered by the negative slogan, “Ride it like you stole it.” Stealing bikes is against the Code of the West on the highest order. But we like the notion of riding like hell and we’re looking for a substitute.

Hey! Is he serious or what?! I’m so over the Government’s(and everyone else’s) euphemizing, politically-correctifying,and sugar-coating everything under the sun to the pointwhere our lives aren’t worth squat anymore.

Renegade, sorry, man, but just get over it!!! Bike theft is animportant part of our cultural history — not one we liketo think about or dwell on — but a part. As soon as westart sweeping away little bits of our heritage becausethey displease us somehow, we begin to lose the very fabricthat binds us together.

So, while you’re searching for a more politically correctsubstitute, I’m gonna continue to RIDE IT LIKE I STOLE IT!

Eslick and Buell Complete Fontana AMA Daytona SportBike SweepPrivateer Buell Beats Factory Kawasaki?s Hacking in Both Races–East Troy, Wis. (March 24, 2009) Danny Eslick swept the AMA Daytona SportBike double-header at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, March 20-21, winning both rounds of the weekend aboard his Bruce Rossmeyer?s Daytona Racing/RMR Buell 1125R in dramatically different fashion to achieve his first career AMA Pro Racing wins. The victories were also the first in AMA Pro Racing competition for the Buell 1125R.

In Saturday?s Race 1, Eslick jumped out to the lead on the first lap, and as Team M4 Suzuki?s Martin Cardenas, Monster Energy/Attack Kawasaki?s Jamie Hacking, Team M4 Suzuki?s Jason DiSalvo and Erion Honda?s Jake Zemke engaged in a dogfight for the second and third steps on the podium behind him, he broke away for a commanding wire-to-wire victory.

The 22-year-old Broken Arrow, Okla., rider lead by more than seven seconds at one point before backing down on the final lap to take a celebratory wheelie across the start-finish stripe. His victory margin was 2.5 seconds over second place Hacking. Eslick also recorded the fast lap of the race, a 1:27.832.

?I got a good start and broke away from those guys,? said Eslick. ?They were battling each other back there and I had sort of a lonely race up front. I just kept my head down and kept watching my lap timer. The Buell 1125R was awesome.?

Eslick again charged to the front and lead every lap of Sunday?s Race 2, but had a much tougher fight on his hands from Hacking. After an early three-lap caution period, Eslick reassumed the lead on the restart and built a small gap, and by the time Hacking worked his way up from fourth past Erion Honda?s Jake Zemke and Graves Yamaha?s Josh Herrin into second on Lap 13, Eslick had jumped out to a 2-second lead. But Hacking clawed his way back into contention, closing the gap to just 0.151 second by Lap 19 and setting up a battle to the checkered flag as the pair broke away from the rest of the field. At the stripe, Eslick bested the veteran factory rider by less than a tenth of a second. Team M4 Suzuki?s Jason DiSalvo made a late-race charge to nip teammate Martin Cardenas by a photo-finish margin of 0.031 second for third place. The gap from Hacking to DiSalvo was eight seconds.

?I got the holeshot and I built a little bit of a gap, but then Jamie was all over me. He never really showed me a wheel, and I kept waiting for a big move from him but it never happened,? Eslick said. ?It was an awesome weekend and it was just spectacular to get my first two [AMA Pro Racing] wins.?

?We are so honored to have this great Bruce Rossmeyer/RMR/GEICO team and a rider like Danny Eslick,? said Erik Buell, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer of Buell Motorcycle Company. ?Danny is exploring all the differences of the Buell, like ZTL brakes and fuel in the frame, and he likes what he?s finding. AMA Pro Racing?s new Daytona SportBike class is great competition, with six brands finishing in the top ten. It?s going to be an incredible season to watch motorcycle racing in America, and best of all to watch an American sportbike finally battling for wins.?

BONNEVILLE RACING UPDATE–Just a quick note to let you know the the FIM has released the ‘Appendicies for World Records & Guidelines for Road Racing International Meeting’ or in other worlds- the FIM rulebook!

I will post the link to this rule book on our website soon, however I have also included the link here for you now:http://www.fim-live.com/en/fim/fim-official-documents/

It is the first document listed… and this year both books needed to attempt a world record are in the single volume (yay!).

For future reference- you can find it in the Official documents section of the FIM website, or linked in the rules and records section of the BUB speed Trials website.

No word yet on an FIM listing of the current world records, though I was told this is being worked on. Until then, we do have a supplemental list on the BUB website in the FIM rules and records section with a full listing of the current records that have been set at the BUB meet.

FIM licensing packets are on their way to me from the AMA. If you are interested in competing in FIM, there is checklist on our website in the FIM entry section that covers what you need to know. Please also email or call us ASAP and we will get your postal details so we can send out a packet as soon as they get to us.

ANTIQUE MOTORCYCLES AND COLLECTOR CARS SALES ARE UP–Recent auction results have shown that the collector car market continues to show strength, despite the current economy. As we prepare for our Classic Car Auction of Michigan event April 25-26 in Novi, we would like to interest you in a story regarding several unusual examples of automotive history as you will read below and the current state of the collector car market.

It is estimated that over 8,000 different automotive marques were produced around the world since the dawn of the automobile in the late 1800’s. At the epicenter, the State of Michigan hosted over 700 various automobile manufacturers throughout the evolution of motoring. Of those, over 300 brands were produced in Detroit alone. RM’s two-day weekend event will showcase several examples of these iconic automobiles, many of which were built by the predecessors of today’s automotive workers, along with hundreds of other rare and desirable collector cars and trucks.

Virtually all hardcore riders answered they would give up their spouse or significant other before their motorcycle, according to the recent results of a consumer study commissioned by Allstate Insurance Company. Also, riders across all classifications were twice as likely to give up their television sets before their motorcycles – a testament to the passion many Americans feel for their bikes and riding.

These and other insights were revealed in an online survey of 500 male bikers nationwide, weighted to represent the total population and commissioned by the Northbrook, Illinois-based insurer earlier this year. Allstate developed the study to stay current about changing demographics and interests of those who ride motorcycles.

“Similar to car enthusiasts, millions of Americans invest significant time, energy and money to celebrate their love of motorcycles,” said Jeff Deigl, assistant vice president, specialty product lines for Allstate. “It’s important to constantly update our understanding of who’s out there riding and what’s important to them. After all, we don’t just protect the bike – we protect the rider, as well.”

Who I am and What I Ride Participants had the opportunity to identify their “biker classification” as a Sports Bike Enthusiast, Stressed Out Executive, Hardcore Biker or Weekend Warrior – which led the field with a 31 percent response rate. The majority of the participants who could not identify their classification labeled themselves as Baby Boomer Riders.

Among the riders surveyed, Harley Davidson drew the highest number of clicks when participants named which makes of motorcycles fill their garages. Thirty-five percent of participants own at least one Harley and spend an average of $20,600 for the bike. An additional $2,250, on average, is spent for accessories. Honda emerged as the runner-up with 30 percent of participants owning at least one.

How Much I Ride and Why Allstate’s study found that seven in 10 bikers ride at least once a week, including almost 45 percent of the participants who ride several times a week.

So, bikers are loyal to their passion, but why? Provided a long list of reasons to ride, bikers rallied around the idea of “riding is more fun” as their most common answer with 78 percent agreeing. “The feeling of freedom”, “the way it makes them feel” and “to relieve stress” also produced high results – all reaching more than 300 clicks.

In a nod to rising gas prices, 63 percent of respondents named “the fuel economy” as a top reason why they ride.

Where to Find Me Motorcycles allow their owners to socialize in a number of different outlets. Bikers unite at rallies and local clubs, philanthropic rides and around the water cooler with one commonality – their love of riding.

More than half of participants attend rallies, including one of the most well-known rallies – the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which topped the attendance list, and the Daytona Beach, Fla. rallies (Bike Week and Biketoberfest).

One in five bikers belongs to a riding club, which predominantly consists of Hardcore Bikers. Even more riders participate in charity rides, including a “Ride for Life” event – typically to support a cure for a disease or other common cause. Two-thirds of bikers ride to work, taking advantage of the parking incentive motorcycles present.

Not only can you find bikers atop their ride, half of the surveyed participants – most of whom are Hardcore Bikers – ride with their spouse or significant other.

Ultimate Road Songs As motorcycles continue to have an established presence in American culture with more than 6 million registered bikes, one thing is clear – bikers continue to live with the attitude they were “Born to Be Wild,” the most popular song among survey participants. Below is a top five countdown, beginning with the most popular, of cruising music, selected by surveyed respondents.

“Born to be Wild,” Steppenwolf “Radar Love,” Golden Earring “Take it Easy,” the Eagles “Born to Run,” Bruce Springsteen “Freebird,” Lynyrd Skynyrd Something for a Rainy Day To satisfy a biker’s daily fix – whatever their classification may be – for anything and everything motorcycles, Allstate designed www.allstategarage.com, a site that features specific elements, including:

“Plan a Ride,” which uses the most up-to-date satellite imaging and mapping software from Google. This feature allows riders to create their own routes, chose from a list of scenic rides or check out what fellow riders have posted as their favorites. “Build a Bike,” a 12-step process that allows enthusiasts to pick from various parts, accessories and paint colors to create their own bike. “Calendar,” featuring upcoming national and local events. “Garage TV,” a tool that incorporates professional mechanics giving tutorials on many different safety concerns for motorcycles. “Get a Quote” and “Find an Agent” features, which enable site visitors to enter information online for a quote or locate a nearby Allstate agent. “Motorcycle Coverage,” which provides the ability to research various coverage options and features. “Safety Tips,” which provides checklists and safety reminders.

Why your motorcycle seat needs SaddleGel!–Without question SaddleGel is the most important breakthrough in motorcycle seating technology in decades. This amazing product will increase the amount of time you spend on your motorcycle, creating the comfort necessary to ride all day. Every type of riding is more enjoyable, from touring to dual sport, canyon carving to street cruising.

When it comes to motorcycle seat comfort technology, nothing compares to a Saddlemen seat with SaddleGel. The proprietary SaddleGel technology was gleaned from the medical industry with specific origins in wheelchair pads and hospital beds. The gel was used (and still is) to prevent bedsores for those confined to beds for long periods of time and for people in wheelchairs?some for their whole lives. Know anyone that rides as much as a person confined to a wheelchair?

In the early ?90s, the experienced riders at Saddlemen figured out a way to incorporate all the benefits of gel into a motorcycle seat and quickly learned it was far more comfortable than standard seats for a variety of reasons. For one, SaddleGel isolates engine and road vibration, a common cause of rider fatigue. Saddlegel is a molded solid with fluid-like properties that will not slide to one side or move around in your seat like water in a plastic bag; instead the proprietary design eliminates pressure points at the hip bones and tail bone by evenly distributing your weight across the surface of the seat. Otherwise, pressure points or ?hot spots? can hinder blood flow, causing pain and discomfort. Normal circulation is never lost on a seat with SaddleGel, and it keeps your rear end comfortable on a long ride, and ready to respond quickly as road conditions change.

Saddlemen SaddleGel is extremely advantageous, but we were able to maximize the benefits of it by developing a seating comfort system around it. Our integrated seat designs include a selection of materials that work together to make our seats as comfortable as possible, while still giving your bike show-quality style. Read more about Saddlemen?s Comfort System Technology (CST) here.

LIFE LONG FREEDOM FIGHTER GONE– It is with sadness that I have to tell you all that Bob Illingworth has passed on. He lived his life with cancer courageously right up to the end. His light and inspiration will be missed.

A celebration of his life will be forthcoming. As soon as plans have been made we will let you know.

Thank you all!
Colleen and family

I’ve known Bob Illingworth for more than 30 years. Bob’s life was always about freedom and supporting motorcycle endeavors. He spent his entire life fighting for our sport, and no one did it with more dedication and aplomb. He didn’t live for making money or building power; He lived for our rights and heritage. He was a rare man of pure integrity. I’ll always miss him.–Bandit

Hey,

It’s another whacky news day, here at the Bikernet Interplanetary Ivory tower headquarters in the third world country between San Pedro and Jesse James’ Long Beach, California. We’re in the industrial section directly adjacent to the Port of Los Angeles where one in every 10 incoming containers is tested for WMDs.

Three times a week we have fire and security drills. Half-naked women follow the armed men to the roof top carrying bandoleros of ammunition and chilled bottles of Corona in case there’s a fire.

We picked up my 23-inch dimpled wheels from Black Bike Wheels last week for the 5-Ball Factory Racer Project. Wait till you see them on the bike.

That’s all the bullshit you’re gonna get outta me this Thursday. Let’s hit the news. I’ll report on Bikernet project bikes and content at the end:

HR 1388 ?GIVE? Act Forces Mandatory Service Requirement on All Young Americans–Passed by the House of Representatives with a 321-105 margin, HR 1388: the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, dubbed the ?GIVE? act, would require the US government to develop a plan to implement a ?mandatory service requirement for all able young people?.

Already males ages 18 through 25 living in the U.S. register with Selective Service to keep records in the event Congress and the President authorize a draft. What is the purpose of the service requirement under the GIVE act?

The purpose of the GIVE act is to ?To reauthorize and reform the national service laws?, specifically the National and Community Service Act of 1990. HR 1388 reads:

?(9) recognize and increase the impact of social entrepreneurs and other nonprofit community organizations in addressing national and local challenges;

?(10) increase public and private investment in nonprofit community organizations that are effectively addressing national and local challenges and to encourage such organizations to replicate and expand successful initiatives;

?(11) leverage Federal investments to increase State, local, business, and philanthropic resources to address national and local challenges;

?(12) expand and strengthen service-learning programs through year-round opportunities, including during the summer months, to improve the education of children and youth and to maximize the benefits of national and community service, in order to renew the ethic of civic responsibility and the spirit of community to children and youth throughout the United States;

?(13) assist in coordinating and strengthening Federal and other service opportunities, including opportunities for participation in emergency and disaster preparedness, relief, and recovery;

Here?s how it would work. Young people will know that between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service. They?ll be asked to report for three months of basic civil defense training in their state or community, where they will learn what to do in the event of biochemical, nuclear or conventional attack; how to assist others in an evacuation; how to respond when a levee breaks or we?re hit by a natural disaster. These young people will be available to address their communities? most pressing needs.

In fact, Obama and Biden ran on the idea of required community service for our youth:

Obama and Biden will set a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year, and will establish a new tax credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year.

I like the idea of a tax credit for public service, but I do not like the idea of mandatory service for our youth. Mandatory requirements do not ensure our youth will develop a sense of lifelong community service, and many churches and high schools already have such requirements for youth.

HR 1388 is currently on the Senate?s calendar. A cloture motion on the motion to proceed to the measure has been presented in Senate. Although I am in favor of community service, I am not in favor of mandatory service, as the GIVE act could take away our individual freedom. I am also concerned at what the goverment will deem service, like biochemical attack training mentioned in Emanuel?s book. What happens if a child does not complete their mandatory service requirement if the GIVE act passes and one is developed?

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER DISCOVERY–The Worst Food in America–Men’s Health magazine has released its list of the worst foods in America in 2009. In the top (most unhealthy) position: a large Chocolate Oreo Shake from ice cream retailer Baskin-Robbins. According to the popular publication, this drink contains an astonishing 2,600 calories, which breaks down as 135 grams of fat, of which 59 are saturated, 263 grams of sugar and 1,700 milligrams of sodium.

For some perspective, consider that most adults need to consume between 2,000 and 3,000 calories per day to maintain a proper weight. So this single drink has more calories than most adults need in a whole day, and in an unhealthy distribution of macronutrients as well – ideally, an adult should get about 67 grams of fat, of which no more than 11 grams should be saturated.

Needless to say, steer a wide path around this caloric bomb, and all other manifestations of the cookie-or-candy-bar-in-a-blender beverages. If you crave sweets, go with dark chocolate that contains at least 70 percent cocoa solids. An ounce or two, a few times a week, provides heart-healthy flavonoids, and stearic acid, the type of fat it contains, does not raise cholesterol levels.

Larry Barry and bandit
The Gun Master, Larry Crow, center stage at the Full Throttle in Sturgis when guns were drawn.

Master Custom Gunsmith Larry Crow, owner of Competitive Edge Gunworks and member of the Prestigious American Pistolsmith Guild, is joining Bikernet with monthly articles for 2006. Larry is not only a premier custom gunsmith but also teaches courses at his facility in Bogard, Missouri. Larry is a Board Member and Summer NRA Instructor at Murray State College in Tishomingo, OK. He is an avid Cowboy Action shooter and Missouri State Champion.–Bandit

Larry and Barry
Larry Crow in the ballcap awarding Barry Wardlaw of Accurate Engineering a special 45 caliber pistol, customized by Mr. Crow. Or was Larry trying to wrestle the weapon away from Berry?

shot10

Todays topic will cover home defense. In these troubled times we live in, we are hearing about alarming amounts of home invasions. What is the perfect home defense firearm?

Just like if I was going to overhaul my Harley, would I need a wrench or a screwdriver?

There is no one firearm that will serve every purpose. I believe the firearm that will fill the bill most often would be a home defense shotgun.

shot3

Handguns play a very important role in defensive situations as they are much easier to pack in a holster.

rug2
Here’s the .45 Rugar modified by Competitive Edge Gun Works for Bandit and Accurate Engineering Series of Panhead engines.

rug3

We find in the privacy of your own home shotguns are a much wiser choice.

rug6
Larry Crow customized this pistol, like I would a bike. It’s got special sights, modified action, engraving and special grips.

rug4

rug1

Handguns are somewhat more difficult to shoot accurately under stress. They will typically over penetrate, which can do harm to someone in an adjoining room. It is very difficult to be accurate with a pistol when sound sleep, a noise wakes you up and you need to think about many immediate choices that are facing you and your family.

shot4

A 12 gauge pump shotgun has a sound, even in a dark room, that is known all over the world when the action is slammed shut! Also, birdshot is a much more effective deterrent in the confinement of your own home, rather than slugs or solid projectiles.

shot2

One of the reasons we feel that the shotgun is the best choice for home defense is that with a properly fit shotgun a 100 lb. woman can fire hundreds of rounds a day in competition. If a shotgun fits the smallest person in your home, a larger person can accommodate it rather easily, compared to the smaller person trying to accommodate the shotgun that is too long.

shot5
This shows the tactical light Larry added to the Remington 12 gauge shotgun.

A tactical light is extremely important as it will light up the darkest of rooms like daytime. A light is the most important item that you should have for a home defense shotgun. You must be able to identify your potential target. Quite often a blast of this light in the face is an effective deterrent.

shot6
See the porting holes along the top of the barrel. Also note the extended magazine. With the extra cartridge container and the 4 extra shells in the stock, this puppy will hold nearly 20 rounds

In my 870 Tactical Shotgun, Home defense DVD, I show a small woman shooting a shotgun very rapidly and with excellent control. The porting of the barrel significantly reduces felt recoil and muzzle rise. While back boring also decreases felt recoil it increases patterning. With this shotgun one can generally hit paper-plate size targets at 100 yards with regularity with slugs.

The Tactical shotguns that we produce at Competitive Edge Gunworks and are offering to the public are the same high custom quality that we offer to law enforcement officers.

shot9

The CEGW Bandit Defender starts live as a Remington 870 pump shotgun. We chose the 870 because it is the tactical shotgun of choice of 90% of military and law enforcement agencies. The Bandit model includes CEGW Signature Action Job, Surefire lighting system, tiranium ghost ring night sights, ported and back bored barrel, spare ammo carrier and speed feed stock assembly, big head tactical safety, and finished in CEGW tough as nails OD Green and black tactical finishes.

shot1

The gun will include the Bandit Defender and Larry Crow engraved on the barrel and as with all custom CEGW firearms, I personally test fire each firearm.

shot8
Checking the stock fit to Black Market John’s arm.

We offer the tactical shotgun with a variety of stock lengths. A good rule of thumb to measure proper stock length is to place the stock in the fold of your arm facing upright with your trigger finger extended, your trigger finger should easily reach the trigger.

shot7
The stock of this customized shotgun holds two extra rounds on both sides.

Since tactical type firearms used in defensive situations are typically fast on and off the shoulder, you typically require a shorter length of pull than would a hunting or target type firearm.
