WHY WOULD I GET MARRIED?– You have choices in life: You can stay single and be miserable, or get married and wish you were dead.

At a cocktail party, one woman said to another, ‘Aren’t you wearing your wedding ring on the wrong finger?’

‘Yes, I am. I married the wrong man.’

A lady inserted an ad in the classifieds: ‘Husband Wanted’.

Next day she received a hundred letters. They all said the same thing: ‘You can have mine.’

Dick Allen wheel use

BIKERNET TECH REQUEST OF THE WEEK–Bandit, my name is Tyler King I am 25 years old. I have a wheel that belonged to my father for as long as I can remember. He passed away in 2002, tragically he was hit by a car on his Harley. I am blessed to have had Richard King aka (RED) as my father. He lived in Anaheim CA most of his life.

I am hoping you can tell me if this is a true Dick Allen 12 spoke mag or not. The marking on the wheel is San-Francisco.Calif, American Racing and Series 300 D.S. The tire is a Dunlop SP sport 185 V R15. I am planning on trying to sell it on eBay and would like to know close to what the value may be for it. Any info you may have for me would be greatly appreciated fill free to email or call me hdking4@yhaoo.com As far as I know Dick Allen didn’t have anything to do with the 12 spoke. Dick had them on several of his bikes and may have done some adapting but as far as I recall they were made by American until Perry Sands bought the prints and rights in the mid to late 70’s.

Sam and I have several of them but as you know they are magnesium and a real pain in the ass.Hope I’m not way off base about that, but I think that’s the way it went down. You can buy them today from ET.

Darryl Worley’s New Chopper…..Built By… In addition to having Tennessee Titan quarterback Kerry Collins and critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter Jamey Johnson guest-star in his latest music video, “Sounds Like Life To Me,” Darryl Worley also invited his motorcycle hero Kendall Johnson to make an appearance.

Johnson owns the award-winning Kendall Johnson Customs out of Winston-Salem, NC, and he built Darryl’s super-stretched chopper with a wicked copperhead-themed paint scheme.

After making some tweaks to Darryl’s new ride, Kendall delivered it to the video set and then hung around for some cameo shots. Darryl rode the chopper in several scenes of the clip, including riding down a closed section of highway into the sunset.

Darryl co-wrote “Sounds Like Life To Me,” which is rising up the national country airplay charts, with Wynn Varble and Phil O’Donnell. The video was directed by Birmingham-based duo The Erwin Brothers for Revolution Pictures, and it should be hitting the airwaves within two weeks. The video isn’t out yet, but you can here the song on youtube here

Triumph

Triumph 2009 Bonnville SE Lives Up To Its Legend–A restyled yet still iconic Triumph Bonneville SE is hitting North American streets in 2009 with a 1970s retro flair and more nimble handling.

The Bonneville legend was born when Triumph broke the motorcycle speed record at the world-famous Bonneville Salt Flats and became the motorcycle of choice by Hollywood stars of the 1950s and ?60s. The new Bonneville SE includes all of the features of the 2009 Bonneville as well as a performance-minded tachometer, attractive chromed tank badge and stylish brushed alloy engine casings.

New handlebars bring the controls closer to the rider and a new seat reduces seat height by more than one inch to just 29.1 inches for a more relaxed riding position. Adjustable brake and clutch levers readily adapt to riders of various sizes. New, cast-alloy 17-inch wheels are reminiscent of ?70s styling and are lighter than the previous year?s model for a more maneuverable and agile ride that inspires confidence in anyone who rides the bike. The Bonneville?s signature parallel twin exhaust note exits megaphone-style mufflers that were popular in that era.

?The Triumph Bonneville has a classic design that stands the test of time, but we also recognize that you can always improve on a good thing,? said Jim Callahan, North American Marketing Manager for Triumph Motorcycles. ?The Bonneville SE does that by incorporating a ?70s retro look that is all the rage and modern technology that provides an even better riding experience.?

Triumph?s venerable 865cc air-cooled parallel twin engine remains the heart and soul of the Bonneville SE. Its 360-degree firing order gives the new Bonneville the engine characteristics of a classic twin, while twin balance shafts and state-of-the-art production techniques ensure 21st century refinement and reliability. Ninety percent of peak torque ? a very healthy 51 ft.lbs. at 5,800rpm ? is maintained from around 2,500rpm through to the redline, providing smooth and effortless acceleration through all five gears.

The original Bonneville was synonymous with the rebellion and independence of its heyday and became famous along side of Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood and other Hollywood legends. Although the latest Bonneville shares the name and timeless looks of the original, it features a modern chassis and fuel-injected engine. The 21st century Bonneville continues to keep its star appeal and counts George Clooney, Nicolas Cage, Pink, Alanis Morrisette and Ewan McGregor among its list of celebrity owners

The Bonneville SE is available with either Jet Black or two-tone Pacific Blue/Fusion White paint while the Bonneville is available in Jet Black or Fusion White. A new, optional rear luggage rack has also been added to the long list of genuine Triumph accessories.

The 2009 Bonneville and Bonneville SE are now available at authorized Triumph dealers throughout North America.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON REPORTS FIRST QUARTER 2009 RESULTS, RE-AFFIRMS FULL-YEAR SHIPMENT PLANS, AND PROVIDES STRATEGY AND RESTRUCTURING UPDATE–Company Generates Net Income of $117.3 Million, Inclusive of Restructuring and One-Time Tax Charges.First Quarter Revenue, Net Income and EPS Decrease.

MILWAUKEE, April 16, 2009 — Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE:HOG) reported decreased revenue, net income and diluted earnings per share for the first quarter of 2009 compared to the year-ago period. Worldwide retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the first quarter declined 12.0 percent and U.S. retail sales declined 9.7 percent from last year’s first quarter.

“While we are mildly encouraged by the fact that the U.S. retail sales rate declined less in the first quarter than in the prior two quarters, we remain cautious and continue to expect 2009 to be an extremely challenging business environment,” said Jim Ziemer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc. “We continue to make good progress in executing our strategy for the economic downturn, and we will continue to manage our business with strong discipline.”

In January, the Company announced initial estimates that its planned unit volume reduction and operations restructuring would result in the elimination of about 800 hourly production jobs during 2009 and 2010. After further development and refinement of production and restructuring plans, the Company now expects that approximately 300 to 400 additional production jobs will be eliminated over the two years.

The Company today reaffirmed its plans to ship between 264,000 and 273,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to dealers worldwide in 2009, a 10 percent to 13 percent reduction from 2008.

First Quarter Results Summary

Net income and diluted earnings per share during the quarter were significantly affected by costs associated with previously announced volume reduction and operations restructuring activities and by an unrelated change in Wisconsin tax law. The Company recorded pre-tax restructuring costs of $34.9 million during the first quarter. The Company also incurred a one-time $22.5 million tax charge related to a change in Wisconsin tax law enacted mid-quarter without public hearings and which applied retroactively to Jan. 1, 2009. In light of these one-time costs, net income for the quarter was $117.3 million compared to $187.6 million in the first quarter of 2008, on revenue of $1.29 billion compared to $1.31 billion in the year-ago period. The Company reported diluted earnings per share of $0.50 in the quarter, versus $0.79 a year ago.

The Company shipped 74,670 Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the first quarter of 2009 compared to 71,868 motorcycles shipped in the year-ago period and within the Company’s guidance for the quarter.

Second-Quarter Shipments and Full-Year Gross Margins

The Company plans to ship 55,000 to 59,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles during the second quarter of 2009. The Company also reaffirmed its expectation for full-year gross margins to be between 30.5 percent and 31.5 percent, which compares to 34.5 percent for the full year 2008. The decrease is primarily due to an expected unfavorable shipment mix versus 2008, the allocation of fixed costs over fewer units, and expected unfavorable foreign currency exchange rates versus 2008.

Strategy for the Current Economic Environment

On Jan. 23, 2009, Harley-Davidson announced a three-part strategy for managing through the global economic downturn and strengthening its operations and financial results going forward. That strategy consists of: 1) continuing to invest in the Harley-Davidson brand; 2) creating the appropriate cost structure; and 3) obtaining funding to support the lending activities of Harley-Davidson Financial Services (HDFS).

“We have a clear strategy and we expect that it will enable us to emerge from the economic downturn in a position of strength,” said Ziemer. “And our team continues to execute our strategy with confidence and conviction.”

Brand Investment

In the first quarter, the Company’s “Ride Free” Sportster motorcycle trade-up program successfully created consumer interest and reinforced the brand value of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Starting in April, the Company rolled out a national “Super Ride” program. This program provides an expanded opportunity for U.S. consumers to test ride a wide range of Harley-Davidson motorcycles at participating dealerships.

“Demo rides have proven to be one of the most effective ways to turn dreamers into customers and to get current customers excited about a new motorcycle. Through all of our marketing, we are reaching consumers in ways that support the brand and the value proposition of our motorcycles,” said Ziemer.

Cost StructureThe Company is proceeding on schedule with its previously announced volume reduction and plans for consolidating production operations. Planning also continues on schedule for the consolidation of Parts and Accessories and General Merchandise distribution through a third-party provider. In early April, the Company completed the transition of its U.S. transportation fleet operations to a third-party provider.

In January, the Company initially had estimated that the planned volume reduction and restructuring actions would result in the elimination of about 1,100 jobs over the course of 2009 and 2010, consisting of about 300 non-production, primarily salaried positions and about 800 hourly production positions. The Company now estimates that an additional 300 to 400 hourly production jobs will be eliminated.

“We don’t make any job reduction decisions lightly,” said Ziemer. “But based on further planning since January and a deeper analysis of our production requirements, we have now determined that fewer production employees will be required. We will continue to work with the union leadership as we move forward, and as always, we will appropriately manage Harley-Davidson based on business conditions and the needs of the marketplace.”

On a combined basis, Harley-Davidson expects the volume reduction and restructuring activities to result in one-time charges of approximately $120 million to $150 million over the course of 2009 and 2010, including $34.9 million incurred during the first quarter of 2009. The Company now estimates ongoing annual savings of approximately $70 million to $80 million upon completion of the restructuring actions, with 2009 savings estimated to be $20 million to $25 million and 2010 savings estimated to be $40 million to $55 million.

HDFS Funding

The Company continues to act on a number of fronts to obtain the necessary funding to support the lending activities of HDFS. In February, the Company raised $600 million for HDFS through the issuance of senior unsecured notes. Harley-Davidson, Inc. also preserved about $54 million in cash during the first quarter through a reduction in the dividend paid in March. On March 18, 2009, the Company extended its $500 million asset-backed commercial paper conduit facility to March 2010, and in coming weeks anticipates increasing the size of that facility to provide additional funding. At that same time, the Company also anticipates renewing a substantial portion of a $950 million, 364-day senior unsecured bank credit facility which is due to expire in July 2009. In addition, the Company intends to access the term asset-backed securitization market in the second quarter of 2009, which transaction the Company expects to be eligible for the Federal Reserve Bank’s Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF) program.

“We continue to make good progress on funding the needs of HDFS through the paths we have identified previously and anticipate that we will be able to obtain the needed liquidity,” said Tom Bergmann, Chief Financial Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc. and interim President of HDFS.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER FINDINGS FROM DR. WEIL, 4 Ways to Live Past 100–If living a long life is important, you may want to adopt some of the habits that super centenarians have in common. Super centenarians – people who live to be 110 or older – share four common characteristics that may support their long life spans. Throughout their lives, they have remained:

Physically active. Even as you get older, daily physical activity should be a priority. Modify your routine to incorporate small steps, such as daily walks, using the stairs instead of the elevator, or taking up hobbies that involve exercise, such as gardening, playing tennis or hiking.

Positive. Maintaining an optimistic outlook is important to managing stress and preventing related health issues such as heart disease. You can easily train yourself to start looking at the glass as half full. Begin with some simple self-reflection and meditation, and use humor for coping with negative thoughts.

Social. A network of family and close friends is vital to optimum health. You can enjoy the benefits of a well developed social life by spending time with people who make you happy, joining community groups or clubs, volunteering, and participating in support groups. The DrWeil.com Community is a wonderful place to make connections with like-minded people.

Spiritual. Regardless of your religious affiliation (if any), feeling a connection with nature, a higher being or purpose cultivates spirituality, and is an important part of graceful aging.

TEAPARTYKID

Malcolm Smith Protest A Success–Malcolm Smith leads the industry on the rogue path to protesting the CPSIA.

Many are currently fighting the injustice of the CPSIA ? which has banned the sale of youth OHVs ? by going by the book to make their voices heard. But Malcolm Smith remembers a time when motorcyclists were rebels. He, and a number of others in the motorcycle industry, decided to take the rogue path and protest to the CPSIA in a more aggressive manner. Yesterday, industry, media and supporters rallied at Malcolm Smith Motorsports in Riverside, California to witness Malcolm publicly selling three banned youth OHVs.

“We’re selling a few bikes, and only a few because I can only afford so many fines!” Malcolm Smith said with a laugh. “I’m going to have to ask the public to donate to pay them if they put me in jail.”

In the most extreme circumstance, Smith was prepared for the possibility of being arrested in his bold act of defiance, but no such thing happened… which may have been a let down for some. Husqvarna’s Scot Harden showed up with a “Free Malcolm Smith” t-shirt on that he had made just for the occasion.

While “Johnny Law” wasn’t present at the rally, Malcolm Smith Motorsports could still face harsh penalties from the federal government ? namely a fine of $100,000 per offense (totaling a possible $300,000 fine).

“I don’t think they’ll do it, but if they do, it’s going to hurt right now considerably,” Smith admitted. “I’ll have to get a loan to pay it. Hopefully everybody will send five dollar checks in or something.”

Smith went into the rally with eyes wide open, aware of the possible consequences. In fact, he’s ready to take the next rebellious step in protest if the CPSC doesn’t respond in the next few weeks. Malcolm has declared he’s going to “Boston Tea Party it” in the Long Beach harbor.

“I’m going to get a little motorcycle, get it certified that you don’t have any oil in it or any pollutants ? gasoline or anything ? put it on the back of a Sea Doo, get a couple girls with bikinis and ride around Long Beach Harbor where all the containers are coming in, go in front of the Queen Mary and push it in the ocean,” Smith declared.

teaparty

One thing is for sure: Malcolm’s not going to stop protesting until something is done to resolve this issue. What does the rest of the industry think of his bold tactics? While the MIC and SVIA are keeping it clean and taking the proper channels, they are (on the record) steering clear of being associated with Smith’s renegade tactics. Still, on a personal level, Smith has received overwhelming support from just about everyone in the industry.

“I actually had some high up industry people call me and say, ?This isn’t the official word, but we’re personally backing you. We’re glad you’re doing it,'” Smith said.

He’s not afraid to put his name and his business behind his public act of defiance, and neither are Troy Lee of Troy Lee Designs, Glen Helen Raceway owner Bud Feldkamp or racing legend Jeff Ward, all of whom purchased an OHV from Malcolm Smith Motorsports yesterday at the protest.

“This has been ridiculous for a while so I’m glad Malcolm is putting his foot down and saying, ?Hey I’m going to sell bikes and I’m willing to face the consequences,'” Troy Lee commented just after buying a KTM 65 SX for his son, Max. “I want to ride with my kid. He’s at a really fun age and we have some of our best times on our way to the races and from the races, talking about the day and what happened. I just feel it’s so wrong.”Kids made their own picket signs in the parking lot of Malcolm Smith Motorsports, while inside, the “grown-ups” signed letters which were faxed to California Senators on the spot.

Malcolm showcased his outrage at the “lead law” by carrying around a baggie of pure lead fishing weights which were purchased that day by his wife.

“We’re trying to make the government listen to us that we have a right to ride and that the ruling is just absurd,” Smith said.Smith has been in contact with mainstream media including USA Today, and even had a spot on KFI 640 AM with John and Ken on March 19, following the protest.Smith summed up his intentions to the crowd of supporters on hand at the protest: “It’s just a big hill and I’m going to go up it one way or another.”

riding training

Mandatory training bill in North Carolina?now with mushy language–This is how it started in Florida and Now if you want a Motorcycle License it is Mandatory you take the class at a average of $300.00 per course.

The course gives you a certificate to turn in to the Department of Motor Vehicles who issues a license. It should be noted: Applicants are no longer tested, and Everyone is Forced To Pay to get a Motorcycle License. Do Not Let This Happen Elsewhere.–Rogue

Two years ago, the Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE of North Carolina successfully beat off a mandatory training bill?but you can’t keep a bad bill down. It’s back and its passed the Senate and is before the House.

Last time, the bill would’ve abolished permits altogether, and the problems with that are both obvious and were obviously heeded. This time it does allow a rider to have a motorcycle permit?a rider just can’t renew it. This makes sense?a rider needs a permit to practice but should move on to endorsement or give up a privilege that was only meant to be temporary.

What’s most interesting about this year’s rendition is the editions it has gone through and how the language has changed?and what happens as a result.

Under NC’s current law, to obtain a motorcycle endorsement, a rider must prove competency to “drive” a motorcycle by passing a road test, passing a written or oral test and paying a fee.

Senate Bill 64 was introduced with this key new text: “To obtain a motorcycle endorsement, a person shall demonstrate competence to drive a motorcycle by passing a riding skills test administered by the Division or by providing proof of successful completion of the North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program Basic Rider Course or Experienced Rider Course.” And pay a fee. While it still includes a skills test, it removes the requirement it be a road test. In this version, a written or oral test is removed and not included in any other way.

Note the difference a few words make. The rider must pass a riding skills test but only has to successfully complete a training course to get a motorcycle endorsement. While one can assume that there’s no difference between the two that’s not what is says and this is exactly how loopholes are created.

Whether it’s meant or not, the effect is to remove the legal requirement to have to demonstrate the skill and competency required to operate a motorcycle?in addition to having to prove one can operate that motorcycle in traffic. The second edition?and third?change that language is even more radical ways: “To obtain a motorcycle endorsement, a person shall demonstrate competence to drive a motorcycle by passing a written or oral test concerning motorcycle and providing proof of successful completion of one of the following:

The second edition adds the written or oral test back in but makes competency to drive a motorcycle a matter of passing either a written or oral test.

This time, however “or” is replaced by “and”?taking a course is now required but the rider still has to only prove successful completion of a course.

From having to prove competence on the road, to having to prove competence in skills?all mention of the necessity of skill has been removed in the text of the bill.

Once again, we trust that skills testing is essential to passing the course because we trust that the state motorcycle safety program would allow nothing else?and we have means, as citizens, to insist that be so. But it’s no longer just the state program that has the right to set the standards for successful completion.

The bill adds not one but two other avenues to taking a course that would yield a motorcycle endorsement at the end: The Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course or Experienced course or “Any course approved by the Commissioner.”

In what is surely an accident, MSF is given first place above the NCMSEP, but, at this time at least, the NCMSEP teaches the MSF course. It would appear, then that it is redundant to mention both. However, it allows any provider?including dealerships?that uses MSF curriculum to operate apart from the NCMSEP without any oversight or approval. Or I allows MSF to set up its own system of franchises.

But more importantly, this isn’t the driver’s license-waiver?this is the endorsement itself. As such, anyone who teaches MSF curriculum can hand out motorcycle endorsements for “successful completion” of the course without any outside authority determining what “successful completion” is. Unless, of course, MSF is going to start operating a state or national system to provide oversight to providers who are not part of the state system. Say, for example, from MSF’s regional “campus” in Georgia.

Even so, we know what the MSF courses teach and that there are evaluations as part of successfully graduating from the course. We know that actual riding skills are minimally tested. That is now, however, and no guarantee that the standards will remain the same in the future.

One of the more subtle effects of the bill is to remove the power of the state to determine what the standards of competency are for motorcycle operation in any way. The Division of Motor Vehicles no longer is responsible and those through the NCMSEP apply only to that option for getting a motorcycle endorsement.

Instead, a trade group of motorcycle manufacturers who have a financial interest in more people “successfully completing” the course and buying motorcycles have the power to determine the standards for a state and to exercise what has been?and still is?seen as a necessary government function?granting a motorcycle endorsement.

As long as the good riders of NC believe that there will be some skill level required to “successfully complete” some no-name or brand name course that should be good enough. Loopholes schmoopholes, right?

BILLY LANE Plea deal at impasse, Lane faces June trial– Attorneys have reached an impasse on a plea deal in the DUI manslaughter case against celebrity motorcycle builder Billy Lane.

Lane, 39, was not present in court Tuesday morning for a docket hearing, where it was anticipated he might enter a plea.Circuit Judge Robert Burger set a June 9 pretrial conference. If no plea deal is reached by then, Lane’s trial is tentatively set to begin the week of June 15.

Two separate hearings were delayed last week because of ongoing plea negotiations.Lane was charged two years ago with one count of DUI manslaughter in connection with a Labor Day 2006 traffic accident in which 56-year-old Sebastian Inlet park ranger Gerald Morelock died.

Police said Lane’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he crossed a double-yellow line to pass slow traffic on State Road A1A south of Melbourne Beach and crashed his Dodge pickup truck head-on into Morelock’s small Yamaha motorcycle on Sept. 4, 2006.

In light of ongoing legal discussions over the permissibility of blood evidence at trial, prosecutors in late December added an alternative charge of vehicular homicide, which requires the state to prove Lane was driving recklessly but does not include the drug or alcohol element needed to prove DUI manslaughter.

Both charges are second-degree felonies, punishable by up to 15 years in prison.Defense lawyer Greg Eisenmenger had said in February the amended charge factored into Lane’s decision to consider a plea agreement.

But Eisenmenger said Tuesday that prosecutors and defense attorneys realized they had different interpretations of verbal negotiations on the plea deal.”We had reached what we thought was a plea agreement in this case. We disagreed with the interpretation of what that agreement meant,” Eisenmenger said Tuesday.

“I’m cautiously optimistic we’ll be able to work through that impasse,” he said.

CRANE CAMS CONFIRMS – AUCTION SALE PROCEEDING AS SCHEDULED– Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. EDT.

on! Today, Crane Cams announced that it is “…committed to its scheduled auction date of April 22, and is entertaining as many interested buyers as possible.” Crane Cams further stated that “Crane has no agreement to sell its assets to Scorpion Performance, nor has it received any offer of any kind from Scorpion.”

LiquiTec was retained by Crane Cams to conduct a public auction of the company’s assets on April 22, 2009 and is also working to sell the assets before the auction to a variety of buyers who have expressed interest in the company’s very well-established high-performance valve-train and ignition components and product lines.

LiquiTec is handling all negotiations in connection with the sale of the Crane Cams’ assets. Contrary to public statements and news releases issued by Scorpion Performance suggesting that a transaction with Crane Cams was “nearly complete,” and that Scorpion Performance was meeting with Crane Cams to “finalize the details,” LiquiTec has had no discussions with Scorpion Performance whatsoever.

Bob Gaudiosi, Vice President of LiquiTec Industries in Mequon, Wisconsin said, “Scorpion’s repeated public statements suggesting their purchase of Crane Cams was imminent has created significant confusion in the marketplace. However, let me assure you, the sale is on and always has been.”

LiquiTec is currently working with a variety of buyers who have expressed an interest in buying Crane Cams and related trademarks, its very popular product lines and related intellectual property, its inventory and its machinery.

Don’t be misled. Everyone has an opportunity to buy the Crane Cams assets. Act now because there are just 9-days remaining. LiquiTec is accepting bids now for inventory, trademarks, patents and product line IP. An auction sale of all remaining inventory and machinery will take place on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the company’s former headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The sale will also be broadcast over the internet via BidSpotter.com. For more information or to register to attend the sale, visit www.liquitec.net or call (800) 852-9252. The sale will be conducted by David S. Gronik, Florida Auctioneer License # AU3852

BUSINESS OWNERS FIGHT MYRTLE BEACH HELMET LAW–MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A group of business owners have joined forces with a state representative to fight Myrtle Beach’s helmet law.The Business Owners Organized to Save Tourism (BOOST) announced Monday morning they are taking steps to encourage bikers to visit the Grand Strand and salvage tourism dollars they say have been driven out by the mayor and City of Myrtle Beach.

The group announced plans to file a lawsuit against the City of Myrtle Beach, claiming its new helmet law and administrative court system are unconstitutional.

The group is represented by State Rep. Thad Viers (R-Horry County) of Coastal Law, LLC., and Todd Kincannon of Barnes Alford Stork & Johnson of Columbia.Viers said Monday he has petitioned the South Carolina Supreme Court to exercise “original jurisdiction” so that the court could take the case immediately in hopes that a speedier resolution will result.

In a press release, the group said they were hired to “help defend bikers who have been ticketed by the City under its new helmet law and challenge the legality of specific elements of the ordinances.”

Viers and company claim the helmet law, which requires cyclists wear DOT-approved headgear goes above and beyond the South Carolina law.”BOOST believes the ample laws exist to reduce the congestion, noise and limited behavior problems associated with the longstanding rallies and that the new ordinances were not designed to control or improve the problems, but to eliminate an entire segment of tourism,” said spokesman Tom Herron in the release. “We find it appalling that the City would first raise taxes by 3 mills in June and then, three months later, decide how to spend those tax dollars to drive away the rallies. This is clearly an example of government excess.”

Additionally, they claim the administrative court the city created was done so outside of the South Carolina court system. Viers called the system “something you’d see in an Eastern European country before the wall fell.”

In the meantime, BOOST said it is launching a campaign to welcome bikers to the area through billboards and fliers. They say bikers are encouraged to obey local laws, but that they are welcome and events are still planned.

In its press release, BOOST said the program includes an advertising campaign to inform bikers that the May rallies have not been canceled; an effort to restore some portion of the moneys lost to hotels, restaurants and other businesses; a campaign to inform residents that the elected officials have increased taxes while “practicing selective tourism – a practice which effectively decreases tourism revenue that would obviate the need for additional taxes;” and encourage bikers to “have fun, ride safely, obey the law and respect our residents.”

BOOST describes itself as “the fast-growing group that’s been organized to fight back against what it calls ‘blatant anti-rally actions and statements by the City of Myrtle Beach and other local governments and months of intentionally negative press’ that members say are taking an unnecessary additional toll on tourism in the already sagging economy.”

MASSACHUSETTS BAN ELDERY NUDITY–I recently read about an new law in MA. Apparently there was a problem with abusing an coercing our older generations into posing for nude photos, so the state of MA decided to ban it.

Massachusetts Revokes Consent of Adults Over 60 By Dr. Marty Klein

Massachusetts state representative Kathi-Anne Reinstein has introduced a bill making it a crime for anyone over 60 to pose nude or sexually for a film or photo. The person taking the photo?whether a lover, artist, or commercial porn maker?would also face jail time.

Adding insult to injury, the proposal amends a bill designed to punish those who make child pornography. It treats fully functional adults who happen to be over 60 the same as children under 18; it explicitly takes away their right to consent to be photographed in a lascivious way.

Reinstein’s office says she proposed this bill in response to requests from senior advocacy groups. They claim there’s an epidemic of “elder sexual abuse,” and cite a handful of ugly cases. What pressure groups and legislators fail to mention is that there are already laws criminalizing coercion, and protecting the mentally incompetent. Other than that, Massachusetts’ millions of older people have the right to make their own choices, poor or not.

The law also criminalizes nude or sexual photography of the physically disabled?again, regardless of mental capacity. Apparently, in Massachusetts you lose control over your sexuality when you lose control over your legs. And don’t forget the small matter of the U.S. Constitution; see Marc Randazza’s excellent coverage of the legal aspects of this law.

Note the report card for 29 veterans and military charities, see below–Americans gave millions of dollars in the past year to veterans charities designed to help troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, but several of the groups spent relatively little money on the wounded, according to a leading watchdog organization and federal tax filings.

Eight veterans charities, including some of the nation’s largest, gave less than a third of the money raised to the causes they champion, far below the recommended standard, the American Institute of Philanthropy says in a report. One group passed along 1 cent for every dollar raised, the report says. Another paid its founder and his wife a combined $540,000 in compensation and benefits last year, a Washington Post analysis of tax filings showed.

Richard H. Esau Jr., executive director of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation, based in Annandale, said the cost of fundraising limits how much his group can spend on charitable causes. ‘Do you have any idea how much money it costs to advertise? It’s unbelievable the amount of money it takes to advertise in the print and electronic media,’ he said. ‘I’m very proud of what we do, and we certainly do look after everybody. The point is we do the right thing by veterans.’

Borochoff said many veterans charities are ‘woefully inefficient,’ spending large sums on costly direct-mail advertising. ‘They oversolicit. They love to send out a lot of trinkets and stickers and greeting cards and flags and things that waste a lot of money that they get little return on,’ said Borochoff, who plans to testify before Congress today.

The philanthropy institute gave F’s to 12 of the 29 military charities reviewed and D’s to eight. Five were awarded A-pluses, including the Fisher House Foundation in Rockville, which the institute says directs more than 90 percent of its income to charitable causes. One group received an A, and one received an A-minus.

Jim Weiskopf, spokesman for Fisher House, said the charity does not use direct-mail advertising. ‘As soon as you do direct mail your fundraising expenses go up astronomically,’ he said. One egregious example, Borochoff said, is Help20Hospitalized Veterans, which was founded in 1971 by Roger Chapin, a veteran of the Army Finance Corps and a San Diego real estate developer. The charity, which provides therapeutic arts and crafts kits to hospitalized veterans, reported income of $71.3 million last year and spent about one-third of that money on charitable work, the philanthropy institute said.

In its tax filings, Help Hospitalized Veterans reported paying more than $4 million to direct-mail fundraising consultants. The group also has run television advertisements featuring actor Sam Waterston, game show host Pat Sajak and other celebrities. Bennett Weiner, chief operating officer of the Better Business Bureau, said the agency has 20 standards for reviewing charities, including that a charity’s fundraising and overhead costs not exceed 35 percent of total contributions.

The American Institute of Philanthropy, a leading charity watchdog, issued a report card this month for 29 veterans and military charities. Letter grades were based largely on the charities’ fundraising costs and the percentage of money raised that was spent on charitable activities.

CALIFORNIA SMOG TESTING PASSES FIRST HURDLE– SB 435 Passes Senate Transportation and Housing Committee.

SB 435 (Pavley), the bill that adds motorcycles to the Smog Check program, passed the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee today with only one member voting in opposition. During the presentation of the bill by the author and the primary sponsor, it was stressed that motorcycles emit “14 times more pollution than cars per mile of operation” and that tampering with emission controls causes emissions to be further increased “up to 10 times”. The author stressed that surveys indicate catalysts are being removed from 38 to 87% of new motorcycles and that Smog Checks are needed to address this problem.

Under the procedures used by this Committee, only two people are allowed to testify in support or opposition. If more than two people wish to testify, they are directed to only state their name, the organization they represent, and whether their organization’s position is support or oppose. Opposition testimony was allowed only from the California Motorcycle Dealers Association and ABATE, and it was not effective. Neither witness made the point that a biennial inspection will be ineffective in reducing tampering. Instead, they argued that motorcycle emissions are not significant and that the cost of Smog Check would discourage the sales of new motorcycles. When I had the opportunity to speak, I bent the rules a bit and stated that MIC hoped to work with the bill’s sponsor on alternative language that would be much more effective.

After the hearing, I was able to spend 10-15 minutes talking with the bill’s sponsor, Bonnie Holmes-Gen from the American Lung Association, and one of Senator Pavley’s staff members. I briefly explained MIC’s concerns with the bill and received a commitment from them that they would meet me at my office at 11 a.m. tomorrow for a more thorough presentation of MIC’s position. It is notable that neither ARB nor the Bureau of Automotive Repair was represented at the hearing. This indicates that the Administration does not yet have a position on the bill.

The way the legislative process works in California, little can be accomplished in public hearings. Parties with specific concerns are denied the opportunity to speak to those concerns at a public hearing when more than two parties are in opposition. The only effective way to communicate MIC’s concerns with the bill will be through meetings with individual members or their staff.

This will be an uphill battle given the current make up of the Legislature, which is why it is probably important to have an attractive alternative that the author might be able to go along with. It might be useful to try to bring ARB and BAR into this. At the staff level, both ARB and BAR agree that the enforcement of a noise standard would be more effective in reducing catalyst removal. ARB could easily claim the same SIP credit for sound testing and remove Smog Check from the SIP.

UNCLE MONKEY’S FAT TIRE DISCUSSION–For almost twenty years now I have listened to my brother-in-law?s grand vision of his dream bike. The bike of his dreams, a low slung pro street custom that he will one day build. I?m still waiting. After twenty years he and his ranting have grown old. All things considered his idea of a dream bike has varied very little in the last twenty years other then the ever-expanding rear tire. He has become obsessed with building a fat tire bike.

Unfortunately every couple of years the tire manufacturers push the limit and his dream bike has had to change and mutate to include the fattest tire available 200, 250, and finally 300. I haven?t had to heart to tell him they make a 330 now.

Every year he laughs and scoffs at my Fat Boy, my Sportster, my chopper, my shovelhead with their puny rear tires. I should build a fat tire bike he tells me. And one day I might but in the mean time, unlike him, I?ve been riding. We all have been riding. We all have ideas of what our dream bike will look like one day.

Until that day comes we are usually more than happy scooting across the countryside on a ratty Sportster or Jap bike or whatever; riding what we can afford, what we can keep running. We make every bike our own. We spent hours polishing cases and rebuilding motors and trannies on bikes that are often far from what we dream of. But we do it. With every busted knuckle, every blood blister we are one-step closer to that dream bike. Few of us would every give that up with an all or nothing attitude. To us this is it all.

The market changes, evolves, and grows. Returning war vets stripped down baggers to be bobbers, and then chopped the frames to make choppers, before being replaced with chrome and billet softails. From there the market has de-evolve; moving back towards choppers, to bobbers, to once again baggers. Few people are building fat tire bikes especially 300 tire ones. Most builders have settled down to stock or 200 series tires to anchor their bikes at the back. A beautiful bike will always look good no matter when or how it was built or how wide its rear tire is. Will fat tire choppers be popular once again, the answer is when not if.

As for my brother-in-law he?s wasted the last twenty years of his life driving in his car dreaming about a bike that probably will only ever be just that; a dream bike.

S&S Cycle and Richland Center High School have very close ties. Our entire third-generation leadership–President Brett Smith, Senior Manager of Engineering Michael Scaletta and Education Lead Tom Smith—all graduated from RCHS.

During their time at RCHS, one teacher in particular, Francis “Fuzz” McCauley, made an impact on the S&S family. Not only was Fuzz the AG instructor, he was also a shop instructor. And, as Smith family tradition would dictate, shop class was important.

parts

Calling on a few good friends, S&S put together a plan to have the kids in Fuzz’s shop class build a chopper that would get raffled off to support the Richland FFA Alumni, which supports the leadership roles of the RCHS FFA.

Kevin Alsop of Big Bear Choppers in Big Bear, California. donated a BBC Merc Rigid bike kit. The bike kit features a frame with 48-degrees of rake, three-inches of stretch, a 116-inch wheelbase and a seat height of just 23-inches. Adding to the cool chopper look is an 18-inch over BBC springer front end featuring an additional two-degrees of rake.

The sheet metal covering the Merc is straight out of a California custom show. BBC includes their flowing fenders, swoopy gas tank and a very cool barrel oil tank built into a battery tray.

workin

S&S provided an 88ci engine and the project was off and running. Working during shop class and after school, a team of students took the Big Bear Merc from a pallet loaded with boxes to a rolling chassis. Tyler Burns, an RCHS student, and coincidentally the recipient of the S&S Second Generation At Large Scholarship Program Award, really took the lead in the build. His father, Tim Burns, has been an S&S employee for a long time so the motorcycle thing was in his blood too. Tyler, and his fellow students, completed the build with some help from the S&S Technicians along the way.

paintin

Once the final mock-up was done, S&S called in a favor from Doug Wozney of Dougz Custom Paint. Doug took the time to work with the kids and design a paint scheme that incorporated the school’s colors and logo, the Big Bear Choppers logo, an S&S logo and a Dougz logo. The finished goods are magazine worthy.

right

The class delivered the finished bike to the S&S Training and Certification facility in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to be fired-up for the first time. Third generation S&S family members, Brett Smith, Michael Scaletta and Tom Smith participated in the start-up and the kids cheered as the v-twin roared to life!

left

Obviously this is a great cause to support. Raffle tickets are going to sell for $5 each or you can get five for $20. The drawing will take place July 8th, 2006 at the S&S Cycle La Crosse, Wisconsin facility.

Checks can be made out to the Richland FFA Alumni and sent to the FFA instructor, Fuzz McCauley, 23200 Hornet High Drive, Richland Center, WI 53581.

I’ll take five.–Bandit

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER, DR. WEIL WING REPORT, 4 Ways to Boost Metabolism–As we age, our metabolisms slow down, which can lead to gaining extra, unwanted pounds. But small dietary adjustments can help minimize weight gain. Try these suggestions:

Eat small meals throughout the day. This encourages steady caloric burn and a consistent metabolism.

Choose healthy carbohydrates. Replace refined, high-glycemic-index carbs with unrefined, low-glycemic choices. The latter do not cause the spikes in blood glucose levels that encourage the storage of fat.

Use spices. Capsaicin (the compound that gives chili peppers their bite), black pepper and ginger all boost the generation of heat in the body, leading to more calories burned.

Drink green tea. The main antioxidant polyphenol in green tea, known as Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, stimulates the body to help burn calories. Dr. Weil recommends drinking a few cups of quality green tea every day.

LEADSHOT

THE BROTHERS LOST EDITORIAL FROM UNCLE MONKEY–We all bear the scars. Animal, Indian, Bubba, or perhaps Sweet Mary, the names of our brothers and sisters who have fallen on the road, fallen never to ride again. At the time we vow that we will always remember them, remember them with every ride, and remember them with every drink. We attach their Memory patches, pins, and crosses, the badges of our pain. Ways of remembering them, honouring their memory. We feel that the pain will always haunt us, always be part of our thoughts.

But time moves on. Time has a way of pushing our memories to the background, out of the here and now. They become a faded photograph on the mantle of our consciousness. We don?t do it with intent; we don?t do it out of disrespect. The hole in our soul that their passing had left has slowly been filled with friends who came forward to help us in our time of need. Eventually we grab our jackets and sling them on without thought, without notice of the words that were to remind.

As we ride down the road we race the wind. Pushing our machines, pushing ourselves. We get lost in the moment, lost in the time, lost in the here and now. It is then that we catch a glimmer, just beyond the edge of our eyes, in the swaying tall grass, in the echo of our pipes. We do remember. We remember their wicked smile; we remember their tall tales, and short tempers. We remember nights spinning wrenches, and knocking back cold beers. They are there once more, once more at our side, once more racing the wind, taking the long way around with us. They are there sharing the road, sharing the passing countryside. As the tears stream from behind our sunglasses we blame the wind, blame it for remembering.

Cybersecurity Bill Proposes Unprecedented Government Power Over the Internet–A cybersecurity bill introduced today in the Senate would give the federal government extraordinary power over private sector Internet services, applications and software. The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 would, for example, give the President unfettered power to shut down Internet traffic in emergencies or disconnect any critical infrastructure system or network on national security grounds.

The bill would grant the Commerce Department the ability to override all privacy laws to access any information about Internet usage in connection with a new role in tracking cybersecurity threats.

The bill, introduced by Sens. John Rockefeller and Olympia Snowe, would also give the government unprecedented control over computer software and Internet services, threatening innovation, freedom and privacy.

CDT President and CEO Leslie Harris said, “The cybersecurity threat is real, but such a drastic federal intervention in private communications technology and networks could harm both security and privacy.” April 01, 2009

BIKERNET ARTICLE ASSIGNMENT– Several years ago, you wrote a wonderful piece about my business partner Algie and our shop Killing Machine Choppers when we were located in Lake Elsinore.

I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a “human interest” type article about my husband David who is serving on his 6th tour in the middle east. He is working for the DOD and is building the American side of the base at Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan. Previously he was stationed in Iraq.

Currently I’ve taken his BigDog to USKustoms located in the San Francisco Bay Area– for some serious custom work and two dear friends Craig Morgan and Perry Mallot have flown over from Australia to do the paint work. Perry and Craig were voted and honored as the two greatest painters in the southern rim of the world.

I’ve included some of the work in progress pictures to share with you and see if you might be interested sharing the talents of each of these wonderfully gifted craftsman.

The theme of the bike is “Bat Outta Hell”…. as you can see in the pictures… the main piece of art is the Bat.. with it’s wings raised like a Phoenix rising out of the ashes into the light. If you look closely at it’s talons you can see he’s clutching a soul from Hell….

God Bless America!

THE GOOD DR. WEIL RIDE MEDICATIONS–Looking for a cost-effective, natural treatment for a variety of outdoor-related ailments? Check out aloe (Aloe vera). The gel extracted from the inside of aloe leaves can be used topically for the treatment of sunburn, mosquito bites, and rashes from poisonous plants, as well as first and second degree burns, skin irritations or inflammation.

It?s a good idea to keep a potted aloe in your kitchen – just slice open a leaf and apply the gel to the affected area. You can also keep aloe lotion (look for those with a high percentage of aloe gel) or a gel product in your first aid kit.

Be aware that topical use can trigger rare allergic reactions and may delay surgical wound healing. Always contact trained medical personnel for burns with significant blistering.

Bikernet noise study banner
Click on the Banner for the Bikernet Noise Study.

SILVER CITY, NEW MEXICO WRITE BIKERNET–Bandit, I am the chair of a noise comm. in Silver City, NM and motorcycle exhaust are one of many sources of noise and discussion. I have explained to citizens, business owners, motorist and lovers of fireworks that we are not picking on anyone we are picking on everyone. The research has been exhaustive about the ill effects of noise, duration, db levels and location all effect the impacts of noise.

Our communities have become much noisier with technologies and affluence so there is now a general movement to quiet our communities, that means everything is up for discussion not just motorcycles. In regards to the safety of motorcyclist vs. exhaust db levels the emergency services people have a similar argument, louder sirens help notify motorist to their presence. The answer is not an ever increasing noise level for all motorist to know that other motorist, cyclist, pedestrians and motorcyclists are in the vicinity.

The problem is that it takes very little effort to acquire and maintain a drivers license, we have altered the way teenage drivers may acquire a license and who they may drive with in a vehicle but that has only postponed the almost inevitable accident from 16 years of age to approximately 18 years of age, but at least we have tried something to make it safer for motorist.

It is now time to try something again, more stringent testing with simulators or real world drivers test, knowledge, better vision testing and reaction timing. These kinds of testing will hopefully weed out those drivers that should not be driving or maybe provide a restricted license. Most all motor vehicle accidents are attributed to inattention, it should not matter what the distraction is the outcome is always the same, there should be stiff penalties for offending parties to let them understand that driving or riding is a great responsibility and should be taken as such.

I have many friends that are motorcyclist and most have been in some kind of accident, I hope that noise is not the answer to a safer riding experience.

–Joe Hutto

Hey Joe, What you wrote was very well put, and I appreciate your consideration. I will forward this to a member of the MIC V-twin committee and to the president of the MRF (Motorcycle Riders Foundation), also. Let me try to put this into context briefly. A siren is used only in an emergency. When a motorcyclist needs his pipes to save his life, they shouldn?t be unduly muffled. I believe loud pipes save lives, but they don?t need to be loud all the time. So how do you deal with this issue?

I lean toward education over more costly legislation, testing, and restrictions. Work with your local motorcycle rights group, shops, dealerships and spread the word?Don?t abuse your motorcycle noise. If you must, pass Daytona?s anti-revving law, which allows an officer to ticket anyone who abuses his ability to make noise. That?s simple, effective and affords a balanced approach without noise testing equipment, certified exhaust systems, etc. Here?s a link to our Bikernet Noise Study. http://www.bikernet.com/news/PageViewer.asp?PageID=902. Thanks much for taking the time to reach out to us.

HINES TAKES SCREAMIN? EAGLE? V-ROD TO HOUSTON SEMI-FINALS–Hines Sets Track Record to Lead Qualifying; Krawiec Advances to Second Round.

HOUSTON, Texas (March 29, 2009) ? Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines rode a Harley-Davidson V-Rod? to the No. 1 qualifying position and advanced to the semi-final round in Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations at the O?Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec, the defending NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, qualified sixth and advanced to the second round of eliminations.

Taking advantage of the 54-degree temperature and low humidity, Hines claimed the 23rd top qualifying spot of his career with a 6.889-second pass in the first round on Saturday, at the time a new Pro Stock Motorcycle track record and the sixth-fastest ET in Pro Stock Motorcycle history. Krawiec qualified sixth with a 6.983-second run.

?We took advantage of optimal conditions in the first session,? said Hines. ?To run this strong in just our second race with the new Screamin’ Eagle V-Rods is great. We had the set-up just right. That was an impressive run.?

Hines opened Sunday eliminations with a 6.946 run to score a win over Suzuki rider LE Tonglet (7.204), and used a 6.934 run to defeat the Steve Johnson WyoTech Suzuki (7.011) in the second round.

A red-light start by Rum Bum Racing Buell rider Shawn Gann gave Krawiec a win in the first round. In the second round, Krawiec rode his Screamin? Eagle V-Rod to a personal-best ET of 6.932 seconds, but that was not enough to defeat the NitroFish Suzuki of Matt Smith, who made a 6.865-second run to set a new national Pro Stock Motorcycle ET record.

?Smith had a great pass,? said Krawiec. ?We had just installed a new engine for the second round, and I made the best pass of my career at an NHRA event. It?s clear the new V-Rod has a lot of potential and we?ll just keep dialing it in.?

Making his second consecutive semi-final round appearance of the season, Hines left the line 0.013-second early to give a win to Douglas Horne. Horne lost to Team Scream Suzuki rider Craig Treble in the final round.

?I chunked the rear tire in the second round, and the new tire affected our set-up for the semi-final round,? said Hines. ?To compensate, I focused a little too much on the tree and got the red light. This one?s on me.?

After two events on the 17-race 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule, Smith leads the standings with 174 points. Hector Arana is second with 172 points, followed by Hines in third with 152 points. Treble is fourth with 151 points, followed by Horne with 125 and Krawiec in sixth with 107.

The next event on the 2009 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule is the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals, April 16-19, in Atlanta.

The company hopes for funding to come from BRP?s shareholders, as well as contributions from other institutional sources.

However, Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services has just lowered BRP’s long-term corporate credit rating in response to the OEM seeking an amendment allowing it to use the new funding to repurchase debt at a discount. The notes in question would mature in 2013.

S&P says it lowered BRP’s long-term corporate credit rating to CCC-plus, down from B-minus. Reps at S&P said that if the debt repurchase goes ahead as planned, the bondholders won’t get back all the principal and interest payments that they would have otherwise received. BRP officials say they believe that S&P’s decision is based on overly rigid guidelines that do not appropriately incorporate the company’s particular situation.

The OEM insists it is not making a distressed debt offer, and says the proposed amendment to allow for repurchases of a portion of its term loan at a discounted rate with new capital reflects management’s motivation to reduce debt levels.

BRP’s portfolio of brands and products include Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles, Sea-Doo watercraft and sport boats, Evinrude and Johnson outboard engines, Can-Am ATVs and roadsters, as well as Rotax engines and karts. The company operates manufacturing facilities on three continents and distributes product to more than 80 countries.

In December, BRP drafted a plan to cut production by 20 percent and to eliminate 980 jobs. The OEM said the global economic recession was forcing it to take conservative actions to reflect the retail and inventory realities of the marketplace and cut expenses to a minimum.

Hard rockers Tesla Stellar Chip Lineup– BUFFALO CHIP CAMPGROUND, SD ?? Sacramento based hard rockers Tesla has joined the stellar lineup at the Legendary Buffalo Chip Campground. They will play Thursday, Aug. 6 during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

In 1986 the band City Kidd was renamed Tesla for Nikola Tesla, an inventor and electrical engineer credited with inventing the radio transmitter before Marconi. Tesla has derived their name, song and album titles and some lyrical content from the events relating to the dispute between Marconi and Nikola Tesla.

The band?s music is heavily influenced by the blues, heavy metal and hard rock. The band has always been more about their music than the glitzy make-up and costume rockers of their early years.

?Tesla provides a hard rockin? component to our musical lineup that combines the blues with the metal influences our Sturgis Rally crowd loves,? said Rod Woodruff, campground owner.

The band has 23 charted hits and six albums that have gone gold, platinum or double platinum accounting for more than 16 million albums sold.

Their current album ?Forever More? which was released on their own label and produced by Terry Thomas, included the hit ?I Wanna Live? on Billboard?s U.S. Mainstream Rock Chart. Thomas also was their producer for their Bust A Nut album, which included the hits ?Mama?s Fool,? ?Need Your Lovin,?? and ?Alot to Lose.?

The band includes vocalist Jeff Keith, Frank Hannon on guitars, keyboards and vocals, Dave Rude on guitars, Brian Wheat on bass and Troy Luccetta on drums.

Other confirmed performers for the Buffalo Chips concert series include: Aerosmith, Toby Keith, George Thorogood & the Destroyers, Lita Ford, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, Billy Squier and counter-culture comics Cheech & Chong. Information and reservations are available at: www.BuffaloChip.com .

HARLEY-DAVIDSON CELEBRATES HISPANIC RIDERS AND ENCOURAGES HARLISTAS TO SHARE THEIR STORIES–The Motor Company Celebrates the Spirit of Latino Riders and Enthusiasts With New Section on its Web Site.

MILWAUKEE (April 8, 2009) ? Harley-Davidson Motor Company is celebrating the dedication and pride of Hispanic riders and enthusiasts by launching a new section on its Web site. As authentic as the Motor Company, the Harlista interactive experience will feature true Hispanic Harley riders. A Harlista is a Harley rider of Latino heritage.

The new interactive section highlights the appreciation of Latino Harley riders and enthusiasts. Harlistas can share and submit personal stories, photos and videos of their life on the open road by visiting www.harley-davidson.com/harlistas. Some of the stories will be selected for an opportunity to be featured in an upcoming documentary produced by Harley-Davidson.

?There is a longstanding history between Hispanics and Harley-Davidson and we want to celebrate it,? said Karina Jaramillo-Saa, manager of market outreach, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. ?We are very excited about our Harlista site and can?t wait to share in the spirit of our riders and see their wonderful experiences.?

Harley-Davidson has been a previous supporter of the Latin Billboard Music Awards, Lowrider Tours, Los Angeles? Fiesta Broadway and one of the largest Latino motorcycle clubs in the U.S., the Latin American Motorcycle Association (LAMA).

Merging the Latino and Harley experience is the foundation of this effort that captures the warmth, compa?erismo (camaraderie) and trust one would sense in the presence of a true Harlista. The interactive experience will further encourage the camaraderie among Harlistas and also serve as a community to inspire those who want to ride.

?Harlistas share in the pride and passion of Harley-Davidson,? said Mario Nieves, president of LAMA whose story is featured at the site. ?Riders come from all walks of life. From Central to South America, the Caribbean and North America, Harlistas share a rich and proud history. This centralized online community gives us a space to share in that passion.?

Mario is joined by Mike Ramos and Victor Camarillo, fellow Harlistas who share their stories and are also featured in additional material available at local dealerships.

Harlistas are encouraged to share their personal stories at www.harley-davidson.com/harlistas and have an opportunity to be part of the Harlista documentary if selected.

BIKERNET SPORTS COLUMN–A Husband takes his wife to play her first game of golf…..the wife promptly whacked her first shot right through the window of the biggest house adjacent to the course.

The husband cringed, “I warned you to be careful! Now we’ll have to go up there, find the owner, apologize and see how much your lousy drive is going to cost us.”

So the couple walked up to the house and knocked on the door. A warm voice said, “Come on in.”

When they opened the door they saw the damage that was done: glass was all over the place, and a broken antique bottle was lying on its side near the broken window.

A man reclining on the couch asked, “Are you the people that broke my window?”

“Uh…yeah, sir. We’re sure sorry about that,” the husband replied.

” Oh, no apology is necessary. Actually I want to thank you… You see, I’m a genie , and I’ve been trapped in that bottle for a thousand years. Now that you’ve released me, I’m allowed to grant three wishes. I’ll give you each one wish, but if you don’t mind, I’ll keep the last one for myself.”

“Wow, that’s great!” the husband said. He pondered a moment and blurted out, “I’d like a million dollars a year for the rest of my life.”

“No problem,” said the genie. “You’ve got it, it’s the least I can do. And I’ll guarantee you a long, healthy life!” “And now you, young lady, what do you want?” the genie asked.

“I’d like to own a gorgeous home complete with servants in every country in the world,” she said.

“Consider it done,” the genie said. “And your homes will always be safe from fire, burglary and natural disasters!”

“And now,” the couple asked in unison, what’s your wish, genie?”

“Well, since I’ve been trapped in that bottle and haven’t been with a woman in more than a thousand years, my wish is to have sex with your wife.”

The husband looked at his wife and said, “Gee, honey, you know we both now have a fortune, and all those houses. What do you think?”

She mulled it over for a few moments and said, “You know, you’re right. Considering our good fortune, I guess I wouldn’t mind, but what about you, honey?”

“You know I love you sweetheart,” said the husband. I’d do the same for you!”

So the genie and the woman went upstairs where they spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying each other in every way. After about three hours of non-stop sex, the genie rolled over and looked directly into her eyes and asked, How old are you and your husband?”

“Why, we’re both 35,” she responded breathlessly.

“NO SHIT.” “Thirty-five years old and both of you still believe in genies?”

WHEELS THROUGH TIME RACE TEAM HEADS TO MAXTON MILE–(Maxton, NC)This past weekend, the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC, travelled to Maxton, NC for the East Coast Timing Association (ECTA) Land Speed Races to compete in the first east coast speed trials event of the 2009 season. The team, consisting of members from North Carolina, Michigan, and Indiana had unbelievable success over the weekend, coming away with 5 new ECTA-certified land speed records with machines in various classes.

During the April run, hundreds of racers and spectators gathered for the two-day event, and were met with blue skies and perfect temperatures for land speed racing. Competitors from near and far brought their best, fielding new and old machines alike, in order to take a chance at making history.

Each machine fielded by the Wheels Through Time race team exceeded 60 years of age, all of which would compete in various vintage classes for their respective records. In total, the team fielded five vintage machines for the speed trials, including the oldest machine to ever run at an ECTA event — a 1930 Harley-Davidson 750c.c. Model D. Prepared and ridden by museum curator and founder, Dale Walksler, the little Harley-Davidson needed to break 85 miles per hour in order to break the record in the Altered Vintage Production Gas class. Scorpion Reduces Helmet Prices–It is no secret that the powersports nation is facing some belt-tightening, so dealer-direct helmet supplier Scorpion recently introduced its own stimulus package ? reducing retail prices on select lids up to 13 percent off of normal MSRP.

That means Scorpion?s EXO 400 series has been reduced from the $149-$179 range to $129- $159, and the EXO 1000 series has been reduced to $289- $309 instead of the original $319- $349 range. The prices vary by graphics.

?Scorpion wants to pass along some savings during these tough times,? explains Scorpion President Rick Miller. ?Economy of scale and some additional assembly line efficiencies at the factory have made it possible to offer the EXO 400 and top of the line EXO 1000 helmets at an even more affordable price. Rather than messing with rebates, or confusing programs, we want to pass the cash savings to the customer.?

scorpion side

Recent upgrades at the Kido Industrial Co., Ltd. factory and a shift to a ?just in time? manufacturing process means all the helmet components are made on-site as opposed to being shipped in from sub-contractors from distant locations.

Almost every operation needed to create the helmets is located at Kido?s 810,000 sq. ft. facility, including both fiberglass/Kevlar and polycarbonate shell molding, EPS liner manufacturing, liner sewing, water-decal production, clean-room paint booths, drying rooms, assembly, packaging and shipping.

?This is one of the reasons why Scorpion can provide more for less,? adds VP of Sales & Marketing Eric Anderson. ?We are vertical partners with our factory at Scorpion Sports compared to some of the competitors, so we can afford to pass along increased cost savings directly to our dealers and sell to customers at a lower MSRP.?

BIKERNET FINANCIAL PAYMENT-PROTECTION PLANS FOR MOTORISTS COMES TO BIKERS–Those looking for a little extra peace of mind before purchasing their next automobile now have competing programs from Hyundai, General Motors and Ford that all offer some sort of payment-protection should you lose your job. Hyundai even promises to take back your vehicle if you find yourself unable to fine suitable new employment. But what if your desired form of transportation has fewer than four wheels?

Enter Starved Rock Harley-Davidson/Buell in Illinois, the first motorcycle dealership to offer such an incentive plan that we’re aware of. The program, provided by WALKAWAY USA, lasts for the first 12 months for free, and after that additional coverage can be purchased that will allow the rider to “walk away” from the loan. Of course, there is plenty of fine print to go over, so be sure to check out the press release after the break if you’re interested in knowing more.

Starved Rock Harley-Davidson(R)/Buell(R) First to Offer a one-of-a-kind Motorcycle Return Program in Illinois.

OTTAWA, Ill., April 2 /PRNewswire/ — Starved Rock Harley Davidson/Buell has made an agreement with WALKAWAY USA, LLC to offer financial protection to motorcycle purchasers who may have reservations during these challenging economic times. Effective immediately, customers who purchase and finance their motorcycle at Starved Rock Harley Davidson/Buell will have the option of returning their motorcycle to the dealership should they experience one of several life-changing events.

This program, the first of its kind in the motorcycle industry, offers customers peace of mind and financial security, and is complimentary for 12 months from the date of purchase. Customers are also able to purchase additional coverage above and beyond the 12 month complimentary offer, which allows for even greater flexibility in the event that something affects their financial or life situations. The program is available to any rider, regardless of age, health, or employment history.

This one-of-a-kind program provides protection against negative equity and allows customers to “walkaway” from their loan should they experience one of the covered qualifying events.

WALKAWAY coverage includes: involuntary unemployment, physical disability, loss of driver’s license due to medical impairment, international employment transfer, self-employed personal bankruptcy, and accidental death. The enhanced coverage options include longer terms of loans up to 84 months, as well as payment protection in certain situations, which can help protect a customer’s credit rating.

Tom Eiden, Dealer Principal, states, “We are very excited to be able to offer this unique and timely program to our customers. This program provides our customers with the peace of mind that goes with knowing that should the unthinkable happen, they are protected in many ways from having to make payments on a motorcycle that no longer fits within their budget. The fact that it is offered to every customer of ours that finances with one of our lending partners–complimentary for 12 months–only reinforces that we are here to take care of everyone that chooses to do business with us.”

BIKERNET THURSDAY EASTER NEWS – A MILLION MILES ON ONE HARLEY-AMAZING, JR CYCLE PRODUCTS OPENS, NEW STURGIS RALLY SITE, ANGRY PINUPS CLASH ON THE GRIDIRON, D&D BOSS FAT CAT & GHOST PIPE DELIVERS THE ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE ON 2009 BAGGERS AND MORE.

Lead shot
Photo by Sam Dixon in Bikernet shop.

Hey,

Life is nuts and I’ll keep this short, since the news is kicking my ass today. My 86-year-old mom is fading after a helluva run at life, while Sin Wu spent the night in a spare bedroom with a young cat while she gave birth to three kittens. Amazing how this cat handled everything, from finding a suitable nest (a box of old Bandit boxers, and letting Sin Wu know where to stash it), fluffing it just right, having her kittens, cleaning them, herself and overnight becoming a competent mother. Amazing, this life and death stuff.

kitty face

So say a prayer for my mom, rejoice in new life, but keep it to a minimum, and let’s hit the news. I’ve got to load the factory racer and haul it to Chica’s for a rear fender construction. That’s the agenda for tomorrow, plus stop in Long Beach to check a Ariel square-four project and see Dennis at Todd’s Cycle.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON, INC. NAMES KEITH E. WANDELL PRESIDENT AND CEOCOMPANY UNVEILS BROADER ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP CHANGES– Matthew S. Levatich Named Harley-Davidson Motor Company President and COO James A. McCaslin to Become Executive Vice President for Corporate Product Planning Enrico D’Onofrio to Assume Senior Post at MV Agusta.

MILWAUKEE, April 6, 2009 – Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE:HOG) has named Keith E. Wandell President and Chief Executive Officer, succeeding James L. Ziemer, who is retiring. Wandell, 59, currently serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls, Inc. (NYSE:JCI), a $38 billion global company. Wandell, a 21-year Johnson Controls veteran, starts his new duties at Harley-Davidson May 1.

“Keith Wandell is a seasoned global business leader who brings tremendous energy, passion, and organizational and talent development capability to his job as Harley-Davidson’s new chief executive,” said Harley-Davidson, Inc. Board Member Barry K. Allen, who serves as the Board’s Presiding Director. “His vision and values make him a great fit, and he is absolutely the right person to now lead Harley-Davidson on its exciting journey.”

The Company also announced the following organizational leadership changes which, according to Allen, will also serve as a catalyst to drive Harley-Davidson’s strategies for growth, operational excellence and leadership development going forward:

?Matthew S. Levatich becomes President and Chief Operating Officer of Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Levatich, 44, is currently President and Managing Director of MV Agusta, the Italian motorcycle maker that Harley-Davidson, Inc. acquired last August. While at MV, Levatich spearheaded the restarting of MV’s operations. In his 15 years at Harley-Davidson, Levatich has held positions of increasing responsibility in the U.S. and Europe, including Vice President and General Manager of the Company’s Parts and Accessories business, and Vice President of Materials Management.

?James A. McCaslin moves to Executive Vice President for Corporate Product Planning, reporting to the CEO. In this newly created position, McCaslin has broad oversight of motorcycle product planning and development processes across Harley-Davidson, Inc. McCaslin, 60, has served as President of the Motor Company for the past eight years.

?Enrico D’Onofrio, 51, assumes the post of Managing Director, MV Agusta. D’Onofrio joined MV Agusta as Corporate General Director earlier in 2009, overseeing all administrative functions including finance and human resources. Previously he held senior management positions at motorcycle maker Ducati, including CFO, and at Proctor & Gamble in Europe.

All three appointments are also effective May 1.”On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I also want to thank Jim Ziemer for his 40 years of service to Harley-Davidson and wish him well on his upcoming retirement. All of us who have worked with Jim throughout the years have benefited from his leadership, his selfless commitment to the Company, and his contributions to making the brand one of the most admired and successful brands in the world,” said Allen.

REPORT FROM INSIDE BANDIT’S CANTINA–A little guy is sitting at the bar just staring at his drink when a large, trouble-making bikie steps up next to him, grabs his drink, gulps it down in one swig and then turns to him with a menacing stare as if to say ‘Well, – whatcha gonna do about it?’

The little guy starts crying.

‘Come on man I was just giving you a hard time’, the bikie says, ‘I didn’t think you’d CRY. – I can’t stand to see a man crying.’

‘This is the worst day of my life’, says the little guy between sobs.

‘I’ve got to admit it – I’m a complete failure -I just can’t do anything right.’

‘I overslept and was late to an important meeting,- so my boss fired me.

When I went to the parking lot, I found my car was stolen and I don’t have any insurance.

I left my wallet in the cab I took home.

I found my wife in bed with the gardener – and then my own dog bit me.

So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all.

I buy a drink – I drop my capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve – then you show up and drink the lot! ‘

Former Wisconsin State Senator set to complete one million mile ride on Same motorcycle–Hupy & Abraham, S.C. Announces Landing Party on April 4, at noon, to Commemorate First Time Anyone Has Ridden One Million Miles on the Same Harley-Davidson.

Milwaukee, Wis. ? The law firm of Hupy & Abraham, S.C. announced today a landing party set for Saturday, April 4 to welcome former Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien back to Wisconsin as he becomes the first person to ride one million miles on the same Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The feat will earn him a world record from the Iron Butt Association, an international group that oversees and governs safe, long-distance motorcycle riding challenges.

Hupy & Abraham, S.C. is the sole sponsor of the ride, providing more than $5,000 to offset the travel and maintenance costs. Zien is a longtime friend of attorney Michael Hupy, president of Hupy & Abraham, S.C., and a former client of the firm. Attorney Hupy also testified before the Wisconsin Senate Judiciary, Corrections and Privacy Committee in 2006 in favor of Act 466, the right of way violation bill requested by ABATE. Zien was chairman of the Judiciary Committee at that time.?We are excited to see the culmination of Dave?s journey next month,? said attorney Hupy. ?It will be a monumental occasion when he caps the million mile mark in Wisconsin.?

Zien?s odometer is expected to hit one million miles as he rides into Hal?s Harley-Davidson in New Berlin, Wis. at noon on April 4. Zien will be joined by John “Rogue” Herlihy, a Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame member, Bruce Arnold, an Iron Butt Bun Burner 4500 Trifecta title holder, and Tony Sanfelipo, Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame member, founder of ABATE of Wisconsin and 16-year employee of Hupy & Abraham, S.C., as he travels the more than 1,400 miles from Melbourne, Fla. to Milwaukee, Wis. Dozens of Wisconsin Patriot Guard riders will also escort Zien on a route lined with over 100 American flags as he completes the final leg of his journey. The celebratory event will include remarks from the president of the Iron Butt Association and local elected officials, as well as a check presentation from Hupy & Abraham, S.C. for a $5,000 donation to a veteran?s organization of Zien?s choice in honor of his work as a champion of veteran?s rights and Marine combat veteran.

The landing party was free and open to the public. For more information, please visit www.hupy.com and click Dave Zien?s photo on the homepage.

SEVEN DWARFS FIRST GUESTS AT CHURCH OF BIKERNET —The Seven Dwarfs went to the Vatican, and got ushered in to see the Pope. Dopey led the pack.

“Dopey, my son,” said the Pope, “What can I do for you?”

Dopey asked, “Excuse me, Your Eminence, but are there any dwarf nuns in Rome?”

The Pope wrinkled his brow at the odd question, thought for a moment and answered, “No, Dopey, there are no dwarf nuns in Rome.”

In the background the dwarfs started giggling. Dopey turned around and gave them a fiery stare, silencing them.

Dopey turned back to the Pope. “Your Holiness, are there any dwarf nuns anywhere in Europe?”

The Pope, puzzled again, answered, “No Dopey, there are no dwarf nuns anywhere in Europe.”

This time, all the dwarfs burst into laughter. Once again, Dopey turned around and silenced them all with an angry stare.

Dopey turned back to the Pope and said with a slight pleading tone, “Please, Mr. Pope, are there ANY dwarf nuns in the entire world?”

The Pope shook his head, “I’m sorry, my son, there are no dwarf nuns anywhere in the world.”

The other dwarfs collapsed into a heap, rolling and howling with laughter, tears running down their faces as they began chanting: “Dopey screwed a penguin, Dopey screwed a penguin!”

Kids and chrome

Kids & Chrome, sponsored by Bikernet.com, 2008 Raises $120,000 for Children?s Home Society and Sturgis Motorcycle Museum–RAPID CITY, SD ? While we all know there is something about kids that opens people?s hearts, the combination of ?Kids? and ?Chrome? brought folks to not only open their hearts, but their pocketbooks as well. Kids and Chrome Foundation announced this week that its 4th Annual Kids & Chrome benefit dinner and auction event, held during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, raised $120,000 in support of two vital Black Hills non-profit organizations: Children?s Home Society, the ?Kids? in the foundation?s moniker, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, the ?Chrome.?

?The Dakota,? a one-off custom bagger, created for Kids & Chrome by Tom Binyon, of BaggerWorks Custom Touring Motorcycles in Wichita, Kansas, was the featured auction item at this year?s event, bringing $40,000. The 2008 ?Pit Boss,? donated by Lehman Trikes of Spearfish, South Dakota, also topped the list of auction donations, raising $22,000. Additionally, the 2008 Legends Ride, a celebrity-charity event produced by the Legendary Buffalo Chip to support the mission of Kids & Chrome, raised $38,000 for the foundation, according to Rod Woodruff, Buffalo Chip President and CEO.

?Kids & Chrome provides a very unique, one-of-a-kind platform that unites the eclectic world-wide community of motorcycle enthusiasts, who join us each year during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, for a very philanthropic and genuinely worthwhile cause,? said Jim Burgess, President of the Kids & Chrome Foundation, promoter of Kids & Chrome. ?It?s just a remarkable event,? Burgess continued, ?that gives us a chance to welcome folks around the globe and publicly thank all of our friends in the industry who come together each August in support of Kids & Chrome, Children?s Home Society and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.?

Funding provided by Kids & Chrome supports the therapeutic programming of the Children?s Home Society, a home and school for children with emotional and behavioral issues, many of whom are victims of severe abuse and neglect.

Kids & Chrome?s funding also supports the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame in its mission to preserve the history of motorcycling.

?The dollars raised through the Kids & Chrome Foundation allow the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame to continue to bring the history of motorcycling alive for its visitors,? said Christine Paige Diers, Executive Director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. ?It is our hope to be able to expand the museum in the next few years using proceeds from the Kids & Chrome events. Without this support, plans for expansion would still be only a distant dream.?

Next year?s Kids & Chrome benefit dinner and auction is slated for Wednesday, Augsut 5, 2009. For more information and event updates, visit, www.kidsandchrome.com, or contact Ronda Gusinsky, Executive Director, Kids & Chrome Foundation, at 605/716-9190.

NEW DUANE BALLARD PROJECT BIKE–It’s starting to look like something. Taking it to someone this week that can turn my shitty spot welds into something more solid. Then I can finish the tank.

Still trying to figure out what I’m going to use for brakes and a few other things. What’s everyone else working on?

I’m shooting for the end of June but we’ll see.

MAYBE BANDIT SHOULD HAVE SUED THE DEER–MONTEREY, Calif.?A Monterey County man will be getting millions of dollars from the state for the injuries he received when he crashed his motorcycle after hitting a wild pig.

Adam Rogers is confined to a wheelchair after hitting the pig on Highway 1 near Carmel late at night in September of 2003.He sued the state Department of Transportation, claiming the state was responsible for his injuries because it knew wild pigs were crossing the highway.

The jury agreed, and awarded Rogers $8.6 million.Jurors determined that state officials failed to take action even though they had evidence that a stretch of the highway was dangerous because wild pigs were crossing it.

The attorney representing the 45-year-old Rogers says most the award will be used for future medical bills.

THE UNCLE MONKEY SOAP BOX IS NOW OPEN, Where have all the old bikes gone?– I am very fortunate to have a large circle of friends, customers and readers, almost all of which have ventured down to the local Harley dealership to purchase a shiny new Harley. With the considerable drop in price from several years ago it only makes sense and as I pull my Evo Fatboy out of the garage I can?t help but be a little jealous.

New bikes are everywhere as more and more people are joining the sport and even more women are taking the reins to their own horse. The question I have to ask though is where have all the old bikes gone?

While a couple of my friends still have an old Panhead or Shovel in the garage that they tinker on; on the whole everyone traded their Evo Heritages and Fatboys in on new bikes. The market should be flooded with an over abundance of used Evo Harleys for cheap but I can?t find any.

As I checkout the rows of bikes at the local hangout and at the toy and poker runs I would expect to spot at least some of those old bikes even if it with new paint and parts but not one can be found. Living in a province with a total population of less then a million, once you drill it down to number of riders; Harley riders; we become a fairly tight knit community and yet no one knows of anyone buying an old Harley. Calls to friends across North America reveal a similar phenomenon in their areas. So, where have all the old bikes gone?

The dealers are tight lipped about it only giving a vague ?Oh, someone bought it.? answer. The bikes weren?t sold locally because the 1000+ bikes would be easy to spot. Years ago Arlen Ness bought every Mexican Police bike he could get his hands on but I find it unlikely successful master builders like Arlen are scooping them up to be stored until transforming them into another masterpiece.

Maybe the answer is in wild conspiracy theories. Perhaps the factory crushed all the old bikes to choke off the chain of supply to those that want to build choppers. Gone will be the days of ?true? Harley choppers. Perhaps it is a ploy to drive up the cost of new Harleys? With no old bikes customers have to purchase new ones. Calls to local dealers reveal a wait list of over a year for a new Harley but yet the company is scaling back production; creating even more demand; driving up the price.

Again I can only speculate but you have to ask, ?Where have all the old bikes gone??

cobra building

COBRA SELLS ELECTRIC BIKE EXHAUST COMPONENTS?–Yorba Linda, CA — April 1, 2009 — In a stunning announcement today, Cobra Engineering President, Tim McCool, released information to the media as well as Cobra’s national distributors about the company’s new line of exhaust systems for the growing electric scooter market.

“Transportation technologies are rapidly moving to electric vehicles, mostly electric cars. But now, research has shown us there is a small, but rapidly-growing demand for electric-powered scooters. We plan to achieve and maintain a number-one market share of the two-wheel electric exhaust industry,” McCool said.

McCool then pulled the cover off a smattering of contemporary electric-powered scooters — all equipped with Cobra’s new “Watt’s Happening” line of high performance electric exhaust systems. Those media guests in attendance were at first impressed when the scooters were “fired up” so-to-speak. Yet after just a few minutes of complete silence, the spectators were soon bored to tears by the lack of an exhaust note.

Then, in an obviously orchestrated move, Cobra’s VP of Marketing, Ken Boyko entered the stage to announce Cobra’s new “Exhaust System Enhancement Kit” for most popular electric scooters. The CESE kit is powered by a compact, built-in DVD audio output device that links to the rider’s throttle inputs. The Cobra engineers say the enthusiast will not only have a scooter that sounds like a high performance motor vehicle, but he will be able to “tune” it to taste. The rider can choose sound tracks ranging from Pan Head Harleys to Yamaha’s Moto GP racer.

Boyko went on to explain that the DVD also delivers your choice of 11 output levels. “If you are cruising down the road with your exhaust system set on the “11,” the loudest setting and the police pull you over,” Boyko explained, “you can quickly turn the output knob to the “1” setting, making it difficult for the authorities to write you for excessive noise.”

When asked which electric scooter model will get the first fitment of the CESE electronic exhaust system, McCool and Boyko said they have targeted the soon-to-be-released cruiser-styled Panda 16, a 1600-watt machine from offshore scooter manufacturer, Soy Industries. In closing, Boyko said the all-new Panda scooter when equipped with the Cobra CESE system will allow the rider to switch from a wide variety of various exhaust notes plus a righteous rendition of the all-time biker classic, Free Bird.
