BIKERNET METRIC BANNER 400

NEWS FROM BIKERNET METRIC EDITOR–What is going on in the metric world? No really! What IS going on? I have been locked up inside my shack for awhile now and I am starting to get a little cabin fever. So, here is what I do know.

Terry Lee of Envy Cycle Creations and builder of some of the most radical exhausts in the American V-Twin industry is building a 750 Honda chopper. Talk about coming over to the dark side. This goes to prove that building and riding should be about just that?.building and riding. I am sure when this piece of work is done, it will work as well or better than some of the other bikes he has. I can?t wait. The bike sits just like many of us chopper freaks like and it is all one-off stuff. The tech article is on its way and should be up soon. For now, you will have to look at this teaser of the bike.

Speaking of teaser?..have you all joined Bikernet?s Cantina? You should. For a limited time, bikers that sign up also get a raffle ticket for a chance to win the Brass Balls Military Bike. Bikernet will also give five dollars of the subscription price to the cause. So, join now! www.bikernet.com/cantina

There will be music, beer a ride in bike show (no trailer bikes) and tons of bikes. For more information, check them out online at www.norsemenmc.com .

That is all for the week. Send me more metric stuff, products, news and customs and remember. It is not what you ride it is how you ride it! Full throttle life styles!

DAVENPORT IS DONE FOR 2009–Biggest year ever, and I wasn’t there. The bros were, though. Don Whalen and Rodan came home with a couple of bikes, including this 1917 100-point restoration.

The previous owner told Don, “This bike is guaranteed to do 61 mph in a block.”

“How the hell did you figure that?” Don asked

“That’s what the cop gave me a ticket for, 61 in a 35 mph zone.”

Marijuana farming rebounds in economic hard times– BARBOURVILLE, Ky. — Machete-wielding police officers have hacked their way through billions of dollars worth of marijuana in the country’s top pot-growing states to stave off a bumper crop sprouting in the tough economy. The number of plants seized has jumped this year in California, the nation’s top marijuana-growing state, while seizures continue to rise in Washington after nearly doubling the previous year. Growers in a three-state region of central Appalachia also appear to have reversed a decline in pot cultivation over the last two years.

Officers in those areas, the nation’s biggest hotbeds for marijuana production, have chopped down plants with a combined street value of around $12 billion in the first eight months of this year. While national numbers aren’t yet available this year, officers around the country increased their haul from 7 million plants in 2007 to 8 million in 2008.

“A lot of that, we theorize, is the economy,” said Ed Shemelya, head of marijuana eradication for the Office of Drug Control Policy’s Appalachian High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. “Places in east Tennessee, eastern Kentucky and West Virginia are probably feeling the recession a lot more severely than the rest of the country and have probably been in that condition a lot longer than the rest of the country.”

Growers in Appalachia are often hard-luck entrepreneurs supplementing their income by growing marijuana, authorities say. Troopers thrashing through the thick mountain brush there typically find plots that could easily be tended by a single grower, while officers in the two western states have focused on larger fields run by Mexican cartels with immigrant labor.

The demand for domestically grown marijuana is at a record high, in part because stricter border control has made it more difficult to import pot from Mexico, said Dave Keller, deputy director of the Appalachian High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. Keller said growers large and small across the country are trying to fill the void.

The ailing economy isn’t stopping users from spending money on pot. In fact, Shemelya said the demand appears to be rising with the unemployment rate.

“I’ve never seen any decline in demand for marijuana in bad economic times,” he said. “If anything, it’s the opposite. People always seem to find money somewhere to buy drugs.”

The number of plants destroyed in California has increased over the last three years, said the assistant chief of the California Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement, Kent Shaw. The total increased from 4.9 million plants in 2007 to 5.3 million in 2008.

Already this year, Shaw said, California authorities have exceeded last year’s total. To the north, authorities in Washington have seen the numbers jump from 295,000 plants seized in 2007 to 580,000 in 2008. Lt. Rich Wiley, commander of the Washington State Patrol’s narcotics unit, said his officers have confiscated 540,000 so far this year and that he expects to meet or exceed last year’s numbers.

The amount of marijuana confiscated in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia fell from more than 1.2 million plants in 2003 to just more than 700,000 in 2007. But in 2008, with the economy faltering, narcotics officers witnessed another marijuana boom in the mountains, and they again confiscated more than 1 million plants in the three states.”The economy or lack of economy has always driven the marijuana trade,” Shemelya said. “It still is the cash cow as far as illicit drugs. It offers the greatest return on investment.”

THE SAYTA BONNEVILLE EXPERIENCE–I have a lot of full custom bikes and love to ride them but when you?ve got that much money and time invested in something it?s hard to take it out and beat it up on a daily bases. When you leave a $50k bike on the street in front of the bar its hard to be relaxed.

Not that everyone shouldn?t own one or two full customs, but that you should also have the modified stocker that is replaceable. That?s what I set out to do with a ugly, heavy, 1999 Harley Dyna.

I was helping Dirty Dave finish up the build on his Streamlined Sportster for Bonneville Salt Flats when he talked me into taking something to the salt myself. I figured the Dyna might be fun to get out there so I changed the bars out for some clip-ons and banged out a front fender. We rolled into Bonneville after a couple late nights of working on the bikes and a 12-hour drive and settled right in with the other salty dogs. We took the first day to get everything squared away with tech inspection and registration then got right on the track the next morning. The first run I figured I?d go out and feel the salt under my tires and maybe just break 100mph.

Taking the bike up to speed felt smooth and comfortable; I think all the time I?ve spent on dirt has paid off. As I passed 107mph my speedo cut out so I just kept rolling it on and before I knew it I?d passed the 3rd mile and it was time to start decelerating. Rolling into the pit I heard over the speaker my numbers and a time of 131 mph. Right away I thought to myself lets go again?

Watch for the whole story in a Bikernet feature. He went home with a 145 mph record.–Wrench

BST CARBON FIBER WHEELS LESLIE PORTERFIELD GO 240 MPH AT BUB SPEED TRIALS– DAYTON, Ohio. (September 9, 2009) – BST-sponsored Leslie Porterfield won the Top Time Award at the sixth annual BUB Speed Trials, a motorcycle-only event at the Bonneville Salt Flats that certifies AMA- and FIM-sanctioned national and world speed records.

After rains turned the racing surface into a loose, soggy mess, this year’s course wasn’t ripe for record-breaking runs. Traction was extremely difficult to find, but conditions got better as the week came to a close.

On the meet’s final day, Porterfield made a one-way pass at an average speed of 240.382 mph, shattering the Altered Partially Streamlined Blown Fuel 1350cc world record by 13 mph. Her return pass of 228.470 mph gave her an average speed of 234.275 mph. Incredibly; this milestone was soon bested with just minutes to spare before the Speed Trials ended.

Nonetheless, Porterfield’s record-breaking 240 mph run netted her the BUB Enterprises-sponsored Top Time Award for “sit-on” motorcycles (as opposed to fully enclosed “sit-in” streamliners), the first time this prestigious prize was won by woman.

Honored with the recognition, this seasoned racer was ecstatic: “The salt conditions were incredibly challenging this year and this 240 mph pass is the fastest my turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa has ever been,” said Porterfield. “It was a great comfort knowing I had wheels that were up to the task! The BSTs not only look fantastic, but also gave me gearing options I didn’t have previously. These tough wheels perfectly withstood this extreme test of speed.”

In addition to toppling land-speed records, BST wheels have been proven internationally at every level of FIM Grand Prix competition and in winning 12 national championship titles around the world. BST wheels are DOT-legal for street use in America. Approved for WERA Superbike and Formula 1 roadracing classes, they are currently undergoing AMA Pro Racing’s homologation process.

From the salt to the street to roadrace courses, BST wheels transform the ways a bike accelerates, handles and stops. They’re available for Japanese sportbikes through Brock’s Performance. For more information on BST products and other Brock’s Performance parts, go to BrocksPerformance.com

Carnation

Carnation Milk – 65 YEARS AGO– A little old lady from Wisconsin had worked in and around her family dairy farms since she was old enough to walk, with hours of hard work and little compensation. When canned Carnation Milk became available in grocery stores in approximately the 1940s, she read an advertisement offering $5,000 for the best slogan.

The producers wanted a rhyme beginning with ‘Carnation Milk is best of all.’

She thought to herself, I know all about milk and dairy farms. I can do this!

She sent in her entry, and several weeks later, a black limo pulled up in front of her house. A man got out and said, ‘Carnation LOVED your entry so much, we are here to award you $2,000 even though ……….we will not be able to use it!’

PPG ANNOUNCES ?OUTSTANDING USE OF COLOR? WINNERS AT NSRA NATIONALS–STRONGSVILLE, Ohio ? September 9, 2009 ? PPG presented three vehicles with its coveted ?Outstanding Use of Color? awards at the 40th annual Street Rod Nationals held August 6 ? 9 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. Hosted by the National Street Rod Association (NSRA), the gathering attracted more than 11,000 cars this year. The PPG awards were announced during the Circle of Winners program at the conclusion of the 4-day event.

PPGFORD

The ?Outstanding Use of Color? awards are given out yearly with the winners chosen on how well their vehicles exemplify the elegant, rich and vibrant palette of PPG finishes. The winners of the PPG awards for 2009 were a 1948 Ford F1 pickup owned by Paul and Carol Gerritsen of Dandridge, TN, a 1939 Ford Deluxe convertible owned by Marv and Jan Bok of Auburn, IN and a 1934 Cadillac 4-door sedan owned by Ronnie and Janet Black of Ringgold, GA.

The Blacks used PPG?s Deltron products to achieve a dramatic Santa Fe Poly- and berry red-toned finish on their Cadillac. The Gerritsens used the Vibrance Collection to create a spectacular combo of dark khaki and dark kiwi custom pearlescent green shades for their Ford truck. The Boks opted for a cabernet hue out of the Vibrance Collection for their Ford ragtop.

PPGTRUCK

?Winning this award is great,? said Marv Bok. ?The first thing people at the show noticed on the car was the paint. The color came out exactly the way I wanted ? an elegant, deep candy red. I am thrilled with the results I got with PPG?s paint.?

Selecting just three cars from the vast field of attractive entries was a challenge.

?Picking winners is really tough because there are just so many incredible paint schemes people create for their cars and trucks,? said David McConnaughey, collision product manager for PPG. ?You think you?ve seen it all and then some very imaginative people come along and use PPG paint to create new finishes that are genuinely beautiful and eye-popping. This year?s winners were amazing.?

The NSRA?s Street Rod Nationals draw tens of thousands of street rod fans every year, making it one of the largest exhibitions of its kind in the world. PPG is the organization?s official paint product sponsor.

What industry leaders are saying about the SEMA Show– ?For almost four decades, the SEMA Show has been our single most important event of the year and it will be even more so this year. As the industry pulls together to get through these difficult days, manufacturers can’t afford to be out of sight and out of mind. Far better to be creatively smaller than to not be there at all.?
?Barry Meguiar, President, Meguiar?s Inc.

“American Beta was attracted to the SEMA Show because of the new Powersports Section. By including motorcycles, ATVs and other outdoor recreation products, Beta immediately wanted to be included. We felt the SEMA Show would be a great place to showcase our 2010 models to not only the avid off-road motorcycle rider, but the car and truck audience as well.”
?Tim Pilg, Marketing Manager, Beta Motorcycles

“As Bushwacker gears up to attend its 39th SEMA show, we look back on history and review the industry exposure, information and energy that it provides. This show marks the one event where industry insiders and professionals from all disciplines come together to meet and discuss advancements and market issues that affect us all. VETWALL

VETERANS FIX WAR MEMORIAL–Frustrated with poor maintenance by the federal government, the group that built the Vietnam War memorial is aiming to improve its little corner of the National Mall by taking over lawn care for 13.5 acres marred by weeds, moss and brown spots.

Officials with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund said they were moved to act after reading an Associated Press investigative story on the lack of federal money for the mall, despite needed urgent repairs to the area known as “America ‘s front yard.”

The AP’s story in July analyzed congressional spending since 2005 and found the mall has been at a disadvantage in competing for millions of dollars in extra funds doled out by lawmakers, compared with sites that are represented by powerful members of Congress. The entire mall, covering some 650 acres, is in the District of Columbia, which has no vote in the House or Senate.

Lawmakers frequently direct money to projects back home, but even as the problems became obvious at the National Mall – including the seawall visibly sinking in front of Thomas Jefferson’s memorial – Congress killed a bill last year that would have funded repairs. In January, lawmakers nixed $200 million in proposed stimulus funding for the mall.

The private Vietnam veterans group plans to spend $96,000 in the coming months to repair a broken irrigation system and provide weed treatment, fertilization, aeration and other work.

The group, which is working with the National Park Service to make sure the improvements adhere to the agency’s specifications, intends to continue maintaining the grass in the long term, Fund President Jan C. Scruggs told The Associated Press on Wednesday.Repairs to the irrigation system are scheduled to begin today.

One prominent Vietnam veteran involved with the fund, Texas, who owns the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs, remembers noticing problems when he spoke at a Memorial Day event at the monument this year. It had been years since he had visited the wall.

“I made just a passing comment: ‘Gee, it doesn’t look too good around here,'” said Holt, who chairs the fund’s campaign to raise money for a planned education center to be built on the mall. “I thought maybe it was because of a drought.”Scruggs said he and Holt realized they needed to act if they wanted the grass to be improved any time soon.

“He said, ‘Look, why don’t we fix our corner? That way we can set the standard for the mall,'” Scruggs said. “Americans – we don’t wait for the government to take care of things.”

Scruggs said he hoped the effort might inspire other groups to take over lawn care elsewhere on the mall.

The National Mall did recently receive some stimulus money, and officials hope to soon start major renovation of the Lincoln Memorial grounds and reflecting pool, as well as repairs to the sinking seawall in front of the Jefferson Memorial.

Scruggs said the quality of the grass conveys a message to those who visit the monuments.”Good grass visually has an impact on people,” Scruggs said in an e-mail. “Places like governors mansions, the White House, corporate headquarters, the American cemetery at Normandy have impeccable grass.”

BIKERNET NUMBERS REPORT FOR AUGUST OF 2009–Okay, we buckled. Another site complained about the readership numbers we posted in a press release, even called me a liar. I took offense to that, since we have never lied about our Web Trends numbers.

This skinny individual told us that Web Trends doesn’t count and we need to run with Google Analytics for proper numbers. I asked around the web industry and never received confirmation that one source was better than another, but recently we decided to hook up Google Analytics for a comparison. So here ya go from both sources.

According to Google our reach over the last three months has improved 12 percent, our page views increased 52 percent and something else about the site improved 36 percent (I can’t find that puppy again). That’s odd, August is usually a down month since so many riders are in the Badlands or on the road to somewhere. Here’s the numbers after just one month with Google. We’ll see, over the next three months how the Google numbers and Web Trends stack up.

Web Trends:
Unique users: 274,000
Visits: 480,000
Page Views: 781,000
Hits: 8.4 million
Average time on site: 7.29

Google Analytics:
Unique Users: 111,265
Visits: 159,863
Page Views: 536,503
Time on site: 3.29

I’m still getting my feet wet with this bullshit, but I discovered a couple of interesting facts from the Google Analytics Bikernet Report. Over 18 percent of our readers came back to Bikernet between 15 and 200 times during August. We also discovered that 30 percent of our readership spend between 3 minutes and 30 minutes when they visit Bikernet.

There’s our report from August. Don’t hesitate to contact us if we can be of any additional assistance. Again, I’m just getting my feet wet with this report. I’ll learn more as time flies and we deliver more updates.

Ryan was one of the ninety 18 to 25 year olds that wrote an essay for the contest which ran for October 1st 2008 through August 15th 2009.

The prize for the contest is a 1942 Harley Davidson WLA bobber in pieces, and two months shop time at Carl’s Cycle Supply in Aberdeen South Dakota. As soon as Ryan finishes building the bike and rides it, he will get the title for the bike and get to keep it.

The A.M.C.A. Foundation has also put up grant funds to help pay for all of Ryan’s travel and living expenses while he works on the bike.

A team of over 30 judges composed of people who donated the parts gathered at this year’s annual Super Swap Meet in Davenport, Iowa and narrowed the 90 essays down to the top three, then finally picked a winner.

Tim Yeates, one of the judges on the team described the process of choosing the winner, ?All of the essays were outstanding. It was very difficult to choose just one. Ryan’s essay stood out because he took the initiative to get involved with motorcycles on his own without any outside family influence. He loves working on bikes, and understands the importance of promoting the old motorcycle hobby, and the A.M.C.A.?

The judges spent nearly two hours choosing the winner for the contest, all of the entrants went the extra mile and did a great job. All of the people who entered the contest will receive a free 1-year membership to the AMCA, as well as a pass to The National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa, Wheels Through Time Museum, in Maggie Valley, North Carolina and Vintage Spokes, in Rock Island, Illinois.

Ryan plans to work on the bike for a month on his Christmas break from Lakeland College, and resume work five months later in May when his freshman year of college is finished.

Ryan says, ?I am still in shock that I won the contest. I don’t think it will really settle in until I see the sign that says, ‘Welcome to South Dakota.’ It is a huge honor that you have picked me, and I want to thank everyone in the AMCA who has made this contest possible. I cannot wait to start working on the bike!?

The bikes assembly will be chronicled on the AMCA’s Website, as well as in The Antique Motorcycle, and on Bikernet.com. Once the bike is completed it will be featured in American Iron magazine. Check out www.antiquemotorcycle.org, www.bikernet.com, and www.caimag.com for updates and details!

We will publish Ryan’s essay in the next couple of days on Bikernet.com.–Wilburn Roach

BAD PROSECUTORS, Brevard man wrongfully imprisoned for 27 years recalls ‘nightmare’Prosecution ‘tried to destroy me,’ Dillon tells Rotary Club– To a hushed crowd of 100 people, William Dillon detailed his arrest, trial and murder conviction in 1981, calling it “a complete nightmare.”Then the 50-year-old paused, composed himself and told his audience that he was raped during his first hour in prison.

“Once that happens, you’re labeled,” Dillon said slowly. “It sticks with you and everyone knows it. I had given up.”

Dillon, who spent 27 years in prison, was released late last year after the state dropped charges against him. On Wednesday he mesmerized the Indialantic Rotary Club during its weekly luncheon with his tale of perseverance, DNA testing and hope.

Dillon told the crowd that he had nearly given up on the dream of ever winning his freedom and clearing his name. He said filing a motion to test DNA evidence in his case was a shot in the dark. Little did he know that a yellow T-shirt — critical in the state’s case against him — would yield favorable DNA results and eventually lead to his freedom.

He also had some harsh words for those who sent him to prison, using fraudulent dog handler John Preston and dropping rape charges against a jailhouse snitch in exchange for his testimony. The same State Attorney’s Office, he said, fought for two years against his request for DNA testing.

“Justice shouldn’t be a farce marked with funny business,” he said. “Everyone is entitled to a fair trial. But they are making such a mockery out of justice. I feel like they tried to destroy me and they nearly did.”

Several Rotarians wiped their eyes and were visibly moved during the 90-minute speech.”It’s scary to think that can happen,” said Noirin Foley, wife of Rotary President Michael Foley. “But it’s amazing that he came out so together. To be able to channel that energy into something positive is amazing.”

DIRT BIKE BAN HEARING– Congressional hearing set for Thursday to get information on the law that bans the sale of dirtbikes and ATVs for kids

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Federal lawmakers have scheduled a hearing for Thursday, Sept. 10, to receive an update on the status of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) that essentially banned the sale of kids’ dirtbikes and ATVs, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

The AMA is urging all concerned motorcyclists and ATVers to contact their federal lawmakers to exempt motorcycles and ATVs from the law, which took effect in February. The law stopped the sale of dirt bikes and ATVs designed for children age 12 and under, although the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) subsequently issued a stay of enforcement of the measure until May 2011.

Under the law, all youth products containing lead must now have less than 300 parts per million by weight. The CPSC has interpreted the law to apply to various components of youth-model motorcycles and ATVs, including the engine, brakes, suspension, battery and other mechanical parts. Even though the lead levels in these parts are small, they are still above the minimum threshold.

The Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce will hold Thursday’s hearing, titled: “Consumer Product Safety Commission Oversight: Current Issues and a Vision for the Future.” CPSC Chairwoman Inez Tenenbaum will be the only testifier.

This hearing is the first one sponsored by this subcommittee since the CPSIA passed 13 months ago. It is important that motorcyclists and ATV riders let Congress know that they are concerned about the lead-content requirements of the CPSIA, and that they want youth-model off-highway vehicles excluded from those requirements.

Riders should contact their U.S. representatives and let them know how the CPSIA has created a severe and unwarranted disruption to families who ride together responsibly, and a deleterious effect on youth amateur racing. Because the fastest way to permanently address this issue is through legislation, riders should urge their representatives to support H.R. 1587, introduced by Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-At Large-Mont.), to exempt youth-sized motorcycles and ATVs from the CPSIA.

You can find contact information for your elected officials at AmericanMotorcyclist.com. From the homepage, click on “Rights,” then “Issues & Legislation,” and enter your zip code in the “Find your Officials” box. Additionally, a prewritten e-mail is available for you to send to your representative immediately by following the “Take Action” option and entering your information.

ATV riders can do the same by going through the Rapid Response Center on ATVAonline.com.

It is particularly important to contact members of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection. They are U.S. Reps.:

TOUGH AS NAILS THURSDAY NEWS–

Coleenlead

Hey,

I’m stuck in Bikernet Solitary Confinement. The girls hatched a plan to escape to Palm Springs and lay by a pool for several blistering days.

“Any day but Thursday,” I hollered in a board meeting.

Sin Wu sneered at me, stroked Coral’s soft creamy-white leg and said, “Okay, we’ll leave Wednesday.”

What the hell. I’m just one man? Wait, there’s the Code of the West that governs everything. “No Snivelin’,” is right at the top of the list. This is going to be a helluva news, albeit scattered with typos and mistakes.

One comment before I head into the Bikernet Content Library. A travel writer said to me recently, “Didn’t think anyone would be interested in what I was thinking during a ride?”

I pointed out the contrary, then I ran across this in the latest issue of Smithsonian magazine. They were concerned that all the roads had been covered, so travel journalist were out of assignments unless they blasted to the moon. Jan Morris made the follow observation:

Ah, but what they feel like is something else, and in a profounder sense the best travel writers are not really writing about travel at all. They are recording the effects of places or movements upon their own particular temperaments–recording the experience rather than the event, as they might make literary use of a love affair, an enigma or a tragedy.

With that let’s hit the news:

Badcops

ROGUE, REAL BAD COPS REPORT, Fire chief shot by cop in Ark. court over tickets–JERICHO, Ark. ? It was just too much, having to return to court twice on the same day to contest yet another traffic ticket, and Fire Chief Don Payne didn’t hesitate to tell the judge what he thought of the police and their speed traps.

The response from cops? They shot him. Right there in court.

Payne ended up in the hospital, but his shooting last week brought to a boil simmering tensions between residents of this tiny former cotton city and their police force. Drivers quickly learn to slow to a crawl along the gravel roads and the two-lane highway that run through Jericho, but they say sometimes that isn’t enough to fend off the city ticketing machine.

“You can’t even get them to answer a call because normally they’re writing tickets,” said Thomas Martin, chief investigator for the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department. “They’re not providing a service to the citizens.”

Now the police chief has disbanded his force “until things calm down,” a judge has voided all outstanding police-issued citations and sheriff’s deputies are asking where all the money from the tickets went. With 174 residents, the city can keep seven police officers on its rolls but missed payments on police and fire department vehicles and saw its last business close its doors a few weeks ago.

“You can’t even buy a loaf of bread, but we’ve got seven police officers,” said former resident Larry Harris, who left town because he said the police harassment became unbearable.

Sheriff’s deputies patrolled Jericho until the 1990s, when the city received grant money to start its own police force, Martin said.

Police often camped out in the department’s two cruisers along the highway that runs through town, waiting for drivers who failed to slow down when they reached the 45 mph zone ringing Jericho. Residents say the ticketing got out of hand.

“When I first moved out here, they wrote me a ticket for going 58 mph in my driveway,” 75-year-old retiree Albert Beebe said.

The frequent ticketing apparently led to the vandalization of the cruisers, and the department took to parking the cars overnight at the sheriff’s department eight miles away.

It was anger over traffic tickets that brought Payne to city hall last week, said his lawyer, Randy Fishman. After Payne failed to get a traffic ticket dismissed on Aug. 27, police gave Payne or his son another ticket that day. Payne, 39, returned to court to vent his anger to Judge Tonya Alexander, Fishman said.

It’s unclear exactly what happened next, but Martin said an argument between Payne and the seven police officers who attended the hearing apparently escalated to a scuffle, ending when an officer shot Payne from behind.

Doctors in Memphis, Tenn., removed a .40-caliber bullet from Payne’s hip bone, Martin said. Another officer suffered a grazing wound to his finger from the bullet.

Martin declined to name the officer who shot Payne. It’s unclear if the officer has been disciplined.

Prosecutor Lindsey Fairley said Thursday that he didn’t plan to file any felony charges against the officer or Payne. Fairley, reached at his home, said Payne could face a misdemeanor charge stemming from the scuffle, but that would be up to the city’s judge. He said he didn’t remember the name of the officer who fired the shot.

Payne remains in good condition at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis. He referred questions to his lawyer.

“I know that he was unarmed and I know he was shot,” Fishman said. “None of that sounds too good for the city to me.”

After the shooting, Martin said police chief Willie Frazier told the sheriff’s department he was disbanding the police force “until things calm down.” The sheriff’s department has been patrolling the town in the meantime.

Alexander, who works as a lawyer in West Memphis, resigned as Jericho’s judge in the aftermath of the shooting, Fairley said. She did not return calls for comment.

STATE LINE IS IN TROUBLE, BIKERNET TO THE RESCUE– The Terrible Herbst family bought the entire Primm Nevada concrete footprint a couple of years ago, behind unrelenting success with gambling outlets in their gas stations. Then fate hit with a law restricting gas station gambling, followed by the our economic downturn. Their State Line casinos Whiskey Pete’s, Buffalo Bills and the Primm Valley Resort were hit hard.

State line is a blue collar Oasis run by a couple of bikers. For years it struggled to make a dent in the Vegas market, until recently. Vegas has become so large and congested, the bros went looking for somewhere else to go, away from Los Angeles, San Diego or even Bay Area traffic. Primm is the place and more and more riders escape, even Las Vegas, to hang out by the pools in Primm, where there’s no congestion, or crowds, just babes, good food and entertainment.

We sent Jon Towle, who is currently road testing a 2010 Road King, into the desert, just over 200 miles from downtown LA, to check out the action 50 miles south of Vegas. We’ll bring you a complete report in a couple of weeks. He still owes me the 2010 lowboy Sportster Road Test.

A dentist noticed that his next patient, a little Old Lady, was Nervous so he decided to tell her a little joke as he put on his Gloves.

‘Do you know how they make these gloves?’ he asked.

‘No, I don’t,’ she replied.

‘Well,’ he spoofed, ‘there’s a building in Canada with a big tank of latex and workers of all hand sizes walk up to the tank, dip in their hands, let them dry, then peel off the gloves and throw them into boxes of the right size.’

She didn’t crack a smile.

‘Oh, well. I tried,’ he thought.

But five minutes later, during a delicate portion of the procedure, she burst out laughing.

‘What’s so funny?’ he asked

‘I was just envisioning how condoms are made!’

RUSTYPARTYFLYER

PHONES IN CHURCH–A man in Topeka , Kansas decided to write a book about churches around the country. He started by flying to San Francisco and started working east from there. Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and making notes.

He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign, which read “Calls: $10,000 a minute.”

Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The pastor answered that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to heaven and if he pays the price he can talk directly to GOD.

The man thanked the pastor and continued on his way. As he continued to visit churches in Seattle , Phoenix , Salt Lake City , Denver , Oklahoma City, and around the United States , he found more phones, with the same sign, and the same answer from each pastor.

Finally, he arrived in Texas , upon entering a church in Peaster, Texas , behold – he saw the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign read “Calls: 35 cents.”

Fascinated, he asked to talk to t he pastor, “Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to GOD, but in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads only 35 cents a call. Why?”

The pastor, smiling benignly, replied, “Son, you’re in Texas now … You’re in God’s Country, It’s a local call.”

Payback, in Spades

He stepped into the chilly night, the clean air a welcomechange for his abused lungs after the stuffy confines of the tavern. To counter the shocking effects of pure oxygen, he fumbled in his jacketpocket for the crumpled pack of Luckys. He pulled out abent but unbroken smoke and fired up the Zippo lighter, revelingin the slight petroleum flavor it lent to the harsh tobacco. He pulled thesmoke deep into his lungs, expelling it in a curse.

“Fucker!” he hissed, his eyes lighting on the spanking new Dynagleaming under the streetlight. He fought the urge to kick the bike over. Howcould he have let the bastard take him for so much at the table? Shit, he shouldbe walking out with a pocket full of cash, not some smart ass Valley RUB.He lifted his foot to knock the bike from its stand. Serve the bastardright and he had the money to fix it now. But he couldn’t bring himself tointentionally damage the sleek machine. It wasn’t the bike’s fault thather rider was a total asshole.

Looking over the smooth, graceful curves of the bike, he couldn’t helpbut think of Dee — she hadn’t been at the bastard’s side tonight. Home allalone? Hell, that would be payback in spades. He chuckled at the thought. One night with him and she’d be throwing rocks at the bastard. The chuckleturned into a devious laugh. He flicked the cigarette into the gutter andheaded for his own bike.

Straddling the Softail, he thumbed the ignition, still chuckling. Heknew the bastard would be still suckering people out of their hard-earnedcash at the pool table, there was plenty of time. And what if he did getcaught? All the better. More than one pedestrian shivered at the sound ofthe wicked laughter blended with the throbbing of the big Twin 88.

The lights were on. He sat on the quiet bike for a moment, staringat the house, wondering at the sudden pang of what could only be guilt. Hetried to shrug it off, but it gnawed at his conscience. Dee was just aninnocent, no more at fault than the Dyna for the bastard’s lizard-likepersonality. As he stared at the house, he saw a shapely shadow pass infront of the window. He had a sudden vision of full, soft breasts and doe-like hazel eyes. Shit, he was doing her a favor if it broke her awayfrom the bastard’s inexplicable hold over her.

His mind made up, he swung off the bike and walked to the front doorwith his typically slow, long strides. His finger hesitated for a split secondbefore stabbing at the doorbell. The door opened before he could changehis mind again and he was looking into those warm eyes.

“Bill? What are you doing here?” The hazel eyes flicked past him asif looking for the bastard. “Is John with you?”

“No. He’s still at the Stumble. I just wanted to come by and seehow you were,” he lied. “Since you didn’t show up with John tonight I wasworried you might not be feeling well.” The lies flowed smoothly.

He was rewarded by the wide, bright smile. “I’m fine. I just didn’tfeel like going out tonight. Come on in for a beer?”

He shrugged casually, his heart accelerating slightly. “Sure, but Ican’t stay long. I gotta work tomorrow.”

He watched the full hips sway as he followed her to the kitchen, wondering how their roundness would feel under his fingers. He had toforce his hand to stay at his side. The light from the refrigerator gleamed offthe soft flesh that pressed up from beneath the snug sweater as she leaned into retrieve two beers. He swallowed hard. This wasn’t fair, but shit, therewas no way he was going to pass on this now.

She smiled again and handed him his beer. He nodded his thanks andtook a long swallow.

“I was just about to watch a movie. I know John won’t be home tillafter closing time.”

“What movie?”

She blushed a little. “It’s a chick flick. I can put in something alittle more macho.”

“What were you going to watch?”

“Oh, ‘Fried Green Tomatoes.’ But I could put in Steven Segal orsomething.”

He smiled down at her. “I happen to like that movie. Besides, Ishouldn’t stay long. You know how John is.”

“Oh screw him. Have a seat. Should I make popcorn?”

He settled onto the couch, shaking his head. “No, you just relax. Iknow you worked today.” He was astounding himself with the cavalier lies thatwere spilling so easily from his lips. He almost felt bad for how easily thiswas going, but not too bad. He suppressed a smile.

His eyes ran over her from heel to hip as she bent over the VCR andslid the tape into the slot. She straightened up and ran herfingers through her soft brown hair. He looked into those warm eyes again, holding her gaze a few seconds longer than necessary until she flushed slightly and lowered her lashes.

“C’mon and sit down. Put your feet up and enjoy your movie. I’lljust stay for the first bit, then I’m off.”

She settled onto the couch next to him, near enough that he couldsmell the light floral fragrance he had noticed her wearing on several otheroccasions. His mouth watered. The movie rolled.

Before he knew it they were on their fourth round, the movie was halfover and she was sitting close enough that their thighs touched. Both werelaughing uproariously at the screen. She turned to him, her eyes shiningand her sweet lips curved into a happy smile. It was more than any man couldhave resisted. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled thosedelectable lips to his. He felt her stiffen beneath his arm but he refusedto relinquish his hold as he pressed his mouth to hers in a devouring kiss. Her hands were against his chest, pushing him away without conviction. Thetaste of her against his tongue set a fire in his groin that was not goingto be easily extinguished. The hands on his chest found their way to hischeeks as she began to return the kiss with equal ferocity.

With his free hand he pulled her legs across his lap, cradling heragainst his chest without losing contact with the now-insistent mouth. Finally, she feebly pushed him away. Her lips were swollen, her eyes brightand her breath came in trembling, shallow pants.

“No Bill, I can’t do this. I can’t,” she said without conviction.

He kissed her softly on her deep cleavage. “Why not?” His tonguetraced a trail between the full breasts, her breath caught.

He began slowly unbuttoning the tight sweater. The knit fabricpulled away as it was released from its restrictive embrace and more of theluscious breasts were exposed. There was no stopping now as her soft asspressed against his now explosively hard erection. The sweater came off, exposing milky white skin and rigid nipples straining against the red satinof her bra. He kissed each nipple through the smooth fabric. No protestsescaped her lips, only soft moans. He reached around behind her andunhooked her bra, slipping the straps from her smooth shoulders and completelyfreeing the breasts he had seen in his dreams. Cupping one gently in his hand, he licked and kissed the nipple to the accompanying music of sighs and moans. Helet his lips find the hollow of cleavage, burying his face and inhaling thesweet fragrance. He pushed her back onto the couch and began kissing hisway down to the buttons of her jeans.

The protests came again, with even less sincerity than before. “No,really Bill.”

One button at a time gave way beneath his fingers. Her fingers woundinto his hair. There were no protests now, she was barely breathing. Hepulled the jeans from the round hips and down off the shapely legs. Hekissed the delicate skin of her inner thighs, marveling at the silkysmoothness. He could smell the musky sweetness of a woman fully arousedand he kissed her gently through the satin panties. He could almost taste her.The panties followed the jeans onto the floor, revealing the gleaming blackcurls and glistening pink lips of her vulva. He licked softly, savoringthe sweetly delicate tang. To soft moans of encouragement he nuzzled, nibbledand kissed. Her back arched and the moans changed to a barely articulatestream of mumbled words. He pushed her to the brink and beyond, her bodyconvulsing and a cry escaping her lips.

“Oh my God, Bill. Stop, stop…” she whispered breathlessly, pullinghim away and up to her mouth. She kissed him hard, he pretended to not see thetear that escaped from the corner of her eye.

She fumbled with the buttons of his jeans, her fingers clumsy in hereagerness to release him from his confines. She didn’t even give him achance to get the jeans beyond his slender hips before she was guiding himinto her. It didn’t matter. He still had on his boots, that didn’t mattereither. All that mattered now was a hot, wet, tight pussy and soft lipskissing him hard enough that he thought she was going to draw his soul outthrough his mouth. He drove into her with a force that bordered onsavagery but she hooked her legs around his waist and pulled him in ever tighter, demanding more until he came with a shuddering surge and a yell. Hecollapsed against her soft body, kissing her deeply before burying his faceagainst her neck, feeling the dampness of her skin and inhaling thefragrance that now made him think of raspberries.

“Oh God, Dee,” was all he could manage for a long moment.

He finally managed to push himself up onto his elbows and lookdown into the hazel eyes. Tears were threatening to spill out from behind thethick lashes and he felt that pang of guilt again.

“What’s wrong?” As if he didn’t know.

“I shouldn’t have done this — it was wrong. I know John can be a jerksometimes, but…”

“But what?” Bill was suddenly angry at the bastard, again or still,he wasn’t quite sure.

“But he loves me…” she trailed off, her voice cracking.

“OK, so I’m a total dickhead,” he thought, now angry with himselftoo.

He sat up, hitching his jeans and tucking his still-wet dick backinto his pants, “I…I guess I should go, before John gets home.”

“Yeah, sure.”

She sat up and started gathering her clothes, then disappeared intothe bathroom. He didn’t know if he should wait or just leave. He was feelinglike the supreme asshole now, making John look like a saint. Oh well, shit, payback was hell, right?

She emerged from the bathroom, still rumpled, her makeup alluringlysmudged, her lips red and swollen. But it was the eyes that stopped him. The warmth and happiness had been replaced with an injured innocence. God,he was a fucking jerk.

“Aw baby, don’t look that way,” he took her in his arms, pulling hertight to his chest and kissing the top of her head.

Before she could answer, the front door slammed open with a violentcrash. “GOD DAMN IT! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?” John burst intothe room like a psychotic Rottweiler, screaming, snarling and red faced. Before Bill or Dee could respond, John grabbed her by the arm andyanked her to him, backhanding her hard across the mouth. “You fucking cunt, Iknew it! God damned slut!”

He raised his hand to slap her again but Bill managed to react, grabbing the fist before it could do any more damage to the soft lips.

“Don’t touch her again or I’ll kill you,” he snarled into the rabideyes.

“I’ll kill you first, you son of a bitch.”

John wrenched his arm from the iron grip and took a couple ofstumbling steps backward. Even without the reek of Jack Daniels it was easy to see the guy was shit faced. Bill stepped back away from the raging drunk, waiting to see where this was going. He didn’t have to wait long. A sharp hunting blade emerged from the sheath tucked into the waistband of John’s jeans. Even drunk, the guy steadied the blade with cold accuracy, the drop tip wavinggently in the direction of Bill’s throat.

“I’m gonna kill you first, you bastard, then I’m gonna kill her forfucking around on me.”

Bill had no reason to doubt him and began moving slowly away, lookingfor any available weapon. A cold metal click grabbed their attention. Bothmen turned to see the brunette standing in the kitchen doorway, blood tricklingfrom the corner of her full mouth and a Colt .45 steadied in both hands. It was aimed unerringly for John’s chest.

“Drop the knife John,” she said softly in a voice that neither manwould have argued with.

The knife dropped from nerveless fingers. “I wasn’t gonna hurt himhoney, just scare him a little. I was mad, you know…” he trailed off feeblyat the cold glint in her eye.

“Nobody hits me. Nobody.” The trigger clicked once more into fullcock, the barrel lifted ever so slightly until the bead was steadied on theterrified face of the suddenly sober man.

“Jesus, Dee, what are you doing? I didn’t mean it, I was just pissed. And drunk…and…”

“Nobody hits me,” she repeated. The cold voice sent chills downBill’s spine. She was really going to shoot him.

The terror was too much for John. His face turned chalky and hisbladder cut loose. The room was filled with the reek of strong piss. Dee steppedcloser, the gun ever steady. Both men watched, immobilized by the coldhatred burning in the hazel eyes. She stopped about three feet from thetrembling, panic-stricken bully. Bill could only watch with horrified fascination. In a swift move, her foot lashed out and she kicked John square in the crotch with an audible crunch. Bill winced reactively as the injured man crumpled to the floor, gasping and retching at the explosive pain radiating up from his damaged balls into his gut. Bill couldn’t pull his eyes from the morbidsight as John began puking onto the carpet, writhing in his own urine andvomit.

“Nobody hits me,” Dee reiterated. Bill cringed away as she turnedher attention onto him, but she gave him a small smile. “Could you give me aride to my sister’s, please?”

“Huh? Uh, yeah, sure.” There was no way in hell he was going to arguewith her. “But at least put the piece in your purse, OK?”

She flashed him a grin, “It’s not loaded,” then went to get her coat.

Bill leaned over the thoroughly humiliated bastard rolling in his ownbodily fluids and said softly, “Payback is hell, ain’t it pal?”

He was still chuckling as he escorted the pretty brunette out to thebike waiting at the curb.

Paul Yaffe Down Under Interview

PY2

PY:

Editor's Note: Late last year Paul Yaffe visited Australia to be a part of the country’s leading biker event, the Gold Coast Bike Week, held on Queensland’s sunny Gold Coast. Heavy Duty magazine and Bikernet contributor Glenn Priddle took pics of the event and interviewed Paul.

PY1

Paul, welcome to Australia.

PY:Thank you for having me.

Are you enjoying Gold Coast Bike Week?

PY:Yep, sure am. This is my first time to Australia and it’s been a fantastic trip. The people here are very warm and friendly and the Custom Central guys are a great bunch of guys. The bikers here are just like they are all over the world; they’re enthusiastic, passionate and love the lifestyle.

PY3

How did your visit come about?

PY:Brad Parpit, the owner of Custom Central and Australian Motorcycle Importers and I have been working together over the past 8 months to get Paul Yaffe’s Original product line and the Bagger Nation’s product line in their warehouses and into their shops. Now we’re starting to build some bikes for them. It just seemed to make sense, the timing was good. We just sent them a couple of containers that they received – they’ve got a big Paul Yaffe display in their store that I wanted to see. I want to turn it into kind of a kiosk and do some point of purchase stuff for it; packaging and signage and that type of stuff.

It just made sense to come out. This is Brad’s first year being part of Australia’s Gold Coast Bike Week. It worked out to come down, put faces to names, meet his crew, and offer any assistance I can in any of his purchasing or choices.

Where is his shop?

PY:It’s near Brisbane; specifically it’s at 682 Beaudesert Road, Rocklea. It’s a brand new shop and he’s done a really nice job with it. It’s a big shop. They’re carrying full lines of my stuff, plus West Coast Choppers, Custom Chrome, several different exhaust lines. They’ve got an excellent clothing store upstairs with all kinds of lifestyle clothing – it’s really nicely done.

Is it just parts and accessories?

PY:No, it’s parts and service. They’re doing some custom builds there and stuff and some fabrication. He has a separate dealer network which is Australian Motorcycle Imports that is his dealer-based wholesale company and that’s two huge warehouses several miles away from shop that are filled with product. It’s very impressive, an amazing warehouse.

PY4

How does the Australian bike scene as exemplified by Bike Week compare with the American scene from what you’ve seen so far?

PY:Mmm, how would you compare it? Well, it’s smaller though I want to say it’s very similar, you know what I mean? I feel like I’m at an Easyriders Rodeo, basically, it’s that kind of thing. If there was camping out on the grass and at night there was the zoo, you know, out on the campgrounds, it would be just like an Easyriders Rodeo. Lots of spectators, fun and games, dynos, bike games, bands, shows, girlies – you know, it’s all the things bikers love.

They love to come out and see all this. The fans of motorcycles too, just seein’ all the different brands and seein’ all kinds of people’s work. You know, hooking up with different shops and stuff that they might not have known about. It’s great place to network for the whole motorcycle industry I’m sure.

PY5

How do you find riding on the right side of the road?

PY:Weird, really weird to start with! It’s hard enough just being in a car on the wrong side of the road. Every time we’d go around a corner and a car would come I’d say, ‘oh my god, we’re gonna head on!’ So that was startling.

Then a few days ago, I got on a bike and I rode with a bunch of guys, so that wasn’t too bad, I just kinda followed their lead, you know. Then the next day, I got up in the morning and everybody had left, so I was on my own and totally got lost, went all the way down to the beach, halfway down the Coast. That was a little weird including the fact that I went into oncoming traffic twice, but managed to see what I was doing and stopped in time.

It’s just what you’re used to, so, it’s cool. We went up into the canyons the other day, to where that natural bridge is up there. It was absolutely beautiful, like riding up into a rain forest. It was gorgeous, great riding.

How long have you been in business?

PY:This is my 22nd year.

Most of Australia would know about you through the Discovery Biker Build Off Series. You were really riding a wave then as that show really made media celebrities of builders.

PY:It sure did, it certainly did, and it changed that part of our lives.

Put you on the map for the public, so to speak?

PY:Yeah! Well, as ‘Paul Yaffe Originals’ – as a brand name and as a recognised builder in the country – we were very successful before the Biker Build Offs. We had a very successful parts catalog with many distributors in Europe and in the States, so business-wise we were doing very well. But I didn’t walk through an airport and have people ask for my autograph, which now happens and that’s a bit weird.

During the three or four years when they were airing them, and we did the four shows, there were probably around 20 different other shows we did also. We did one for NBC TV, we did travel channel stuff and we did American Thunder Episodes and Speed Vision Specials – we did a lot of shows. I think about 40. We have a four-hour loop of shows that runs in the shop.

It got crazy and then the shows started hiring us as celebrities to come and do autographs and sign posters and that was pretty weird too. I think I’m lucky as it never really went to my head, it was just somethin’ to do, you know, ‘Glad You want me to come and hang around, we’re all gonna have some fun’. I didn’t change my business plan, I didn’t go buy some huge expensive shop or start treatin’ myself like a rock star.

It was kinda fun while it lasted and there are new shows coming up all the time and we’re happy to do what we can, but things in the industry are settling down and getting back to normal and that’s fine with me.

PY7

Well, you can probably get on with what you really want to do eh?

PY:Sure, Sure. It’s been very nice here to walk around. People say ‘hi’ and ‘nice to meet you’, whatever, but in the United States there’s a different air about it. People are more … well, they are almost of the opinion that they know you because they’ve seen you on TV and they act like they’re your best friend and that’s somewhat intrusive at times. Australians seem a bit different, it’s, ‘Hey, nice to meet ya, I’ll let ya have some space’. It’s very nice, very nice.

Did the Discovery Series make a big difference with your sales?

PY:No, no, I wouldn’t say so. We were crazy busy before it started. I’d say for the past 10 years, maybe more, we’ve constantly had 40 –50 pretty high end crazy ‘ground-up’ builds. My company is also a little more diverse than most. I have my parts catalogs, I have my distributor businesses, and I also am part of several design teams for different corporations like Custom Chrome, SuperTrapp a couple of different wheel companies that I do design work for.

Actually, I do a lot of royalty-type design work. I’m on a couple of engineering teams, problem solving stuff like that. I also have a retail store and I also have a service business. If choppers slow right down, I’ve got plenty of other things to do. Some of the guys that are so focused, the guys that do big ‘ground-ups’ and I think those guys are really hurting. For us, you know, the fab shop just started makin’ more handlebars instead of building more custom frames. We’re just doin’ something different and they were actually happy with it.

The ‘ground-up; customs can get a little stressful, ‘cause they’re so involved. Our engineering standards at our shop are, well let’s say I’m a fairly tough guy to satisfy. I’m so much about the riding; it’s not so much the show as much as the bike has to be totally rideable when it’s done and reliable too. I’m tooting my own horn here but we do a really good job. We have a very reliable and very durable bike. I don’t usually see my customers unless they chip the paint. Or need an oil change. Once I build the bikes they love ‘em.

So would your philosophy be considered Function over Form?

PY:I’m very motivated by form …

PY8

But you’re still thinking it has to be functional?

PY:Oh yeah! I wouldn’t head off in a direction that won’t work, just to look cool. Sometimes I see some of the wild stuff they’re doin’ out there and part of me goes ‘I could do my own crazy stuff’ then I look at the bikes and think, ‘Well, that won’t work, it’s not rideable’. When I’m a judge at a show I’ll walk right past a great crazy lookin’ bike, ‘cause I know it’s got a half gallon gas tank and the chain’s already rubbin’ on both ends of the swing arm and so on. I think, ‘Who’d wanna ride that?’

The bikes I build, I ride ‘em to Sturgis, I ride ‘em to Daytona, my customers ride with me, we ride all over the country.

I’m a Hamster, which is all about riding custom motorcycles and we ride thousands of miles every month going to different events. That’s really what we’re about, and that’s why I got into this – because of my love of riding. You know what I mean? The custom stuff and the designs and stuff I do is to enhance that, and there’s some ego involved too, everybody likes cool stuff. To me it’s all about riding. I think our industry is settling back to being all about riding. And the people who treat this as a lifestyle and the love of the lifestyle are always gonna be doin’ stuff. They’re always gonna want cool stuff, wanting a set of handle bars or a set of pipes or whatever. The people that have jumped on the fad, or saw us on TV and thought, ‘I’m gonna make a million bucks and be a rock star’, well they’ve been disappointed and they’re going’ home with a few less bucks in their pocket and that’s fine with me too. Yeah, that’s quite fine with me. I really like this lifestyle, it’s what I live.

Well, I can witness that. I was with Keith Ball on the way to Sturgis and we were having a meal. Then we noticed that you were in the booth next to us at Flagstaff with your buddies and all your bikes lined up outside on your way there too.

PY:Yeah! 2008 was my 21st year of riding to Sturgis. I build a bike every year and ride it there.

That’s great.

PY:This year I copped out a little and I rode a bagger! Normally I’m on some little hard tail that kills me all the way there! But this year I took Suzy with me. It was a custom bagger, mind you!

PY9

Yeah! it wouldn’t be regular bagger.

PY:No, we put on 23 inch wheels, so on and so forth, but yeah, we rode the touring bike up there.

PY10

What’s your background?

PY:Well, that’s a kinda sordid tale, a little bit of it anyway. I mean, as a kid growing’ up I had all sorts of jobs, grocery bagger to whatever. Then I fell into a job managing a shoe company, a retail sales company. Through a chain of events – and here I’ll make a long story short – I ended up designing high end women’s shoes.

Really?

PY:Yeah.

Sorry, didn’t mean to laugh.

PY:That’s okay, I laugh at it too! I was very good at it. Because of my designs a huge international company was created but I hated it. While it was successful for me at an early age (I was very young, 18 or 19 years old at the time), I quickly found out that the fashion industry is not for me. It was not what I wanted to do, but it did afford me the ability to play with my motorcycles, which was just a hobby back then.

I liked doin’ stuff in my garage and then – long story short again – a lot of friends saw the stuff I was doin’ to my bike, they liked it and then it was ‘Hey, will ya do that to my bike?’ So we first started out doin’ stuff with buddies on the weekends in the garage. I just liked it and I wanted to learn more about it. Some of the natural talent I had was in fabrication, particularly metal bending. Sheet metal forming was something that came to me, absolutely self taught. But I wanted to learn more about four stroke engine theory, electrical theory and so on. I wanted to know the ins and outs and what makes ‘em tick from the bottom up. So I moved from Los Angeles where I was born and raised and went to Phoenix where the Motorcycles Mechanics Institute is located and I attended MMI for a year and a half.

In the United States that’s the official Harley Davidson training centre. You go through about six months of rigorous two and four stroke college, and then you actually get your hands dirty and get into all kinds of different aspects of mechanics. At the end of it you take about 6 months of classes of specific Harley Davidson theory learning about their cool V-twins. So I went through that always thinking that I’d move back to LA, but by the time I was done with school I’d kinda gotten comfortable with Phoenix, which was kinda a small town when I first moved there.

PY11

It’s not so small now.

PY:No, now it’s not! It’s unbelievable what’s happened there. I’m glad I bought some real estate early on!

How big is your shop?

PY:It’s 12,000 square feet.

How many staff?

PY:Twenty right now. The Bagger Nation stuff is doing very well.

Is it easy to find staff?

PY:No, absolutely not! None of my staff had any motorcycle experience when I hired them. I refuse to hire from within the industry.

Really?

PY:I won’t do it. Just a lot of bad experiences.

So you want to teach them yourself?

PY:What I do, is if I want a fabricator, I’ll go to a gate shop or a tech college and pull a welder out of there and teach him what he needs to know. My guys are career guys and they’re very well taken care of. They make a good living. They all have houses, mortgages, families, and 410ks. Some of my guys make about the same as I do. It’s well deserved; I’m only as good as my crew.

PY12

Are they mainly bikers?

PY:Well a couple of ‘em are. One of the oldest guys that works with me I went through school with. He’d moved to New Mexico and opened his own shop. He did it for several years then called me up and said he didn’t want to do it anymore. He loved motorcycles but just didn’t want to be the boss. So he asked if he could come and work for me. I said, ‘Hell yeah, you’re awesome’ and he’s been working’ for me forever. The guy that runs my whole shop, I initially hired him as a guy to sweep the shop and pick up. Now he runs the whole company. I protect myself, all my guys have contracts and non-disclosures and non-competes and so on. I basically tell ‘em, ‘You come and work for me and I’ll take care of you, but don’t think in three years you’re gonna split and go open your own place’ and we have the handshake and we have that agreement and they all stay. I have a very happy crew, they get along great, they’re practical jokers too which makes it a fun as well as a nice place to work and we get some really cool stuff done too.

It’s a simple equation eh, look after your staff and they’ll do the right thing?

PY:Yeah. Parts drivers will come and go but my fab team, my service team, my design team, my marketing team, my management – they’ve all been with me a long time. I think the least is 10 years.

PY13

Where do your creative juices come from, your parents?

PY:Well, I’m an orphan and adopted. My dad was a biker and he had an old Triumph Chopper and a couple of Enduros in the garage that I stole regularly as a kid. My parents certainly let me do stuff though. I had a kinda natural mechanical aptitude when I was young. I wanted to take everything in the house apart and see what I could do with it and they pretty much let me run with it.

They were a little uneasy the first time I put a welding kit in the house and they weren’t too happy, but they let me run with it! They’ve always been very supportive. I think my love of hot rod culture and bike culture comes from the fact that I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, California. And there are some people who would argue that that’s where the hot rod culture started from. I was out and about around town cruisin’ Van Nuys Boulevard when that was famous and they made movies about it. That’s what I grew up with. It’s what I know.

How did you get involved with the Hamsters?

PY:Well, you know it’s funny, when I was about 13 or14 years old, I had already had a love for cars and bikes and in my neighbourhood there was a local bike night at a diner and I’d take the bus over to that part of town then ride my skateboard to the bike night. Grady Pfeiffer, Billy Westbrook, and Don Hotop – all these guys would hang out there. They’d be there and all have these amazing bikes. I’d bug the heck out of them ‘Mr. Mr. Tell me about that … whatever’ and they’d go ‘Getaway kid’ but they were absolutely my heroes and my early inspirations.

That’s what got me into wanting’ to cut stuff up and get into custom motorcycles. And they were Hamsters. Now I’d never really had any great interest in shows, but through business and wanting to make a name for myself well, you go to shows and you show your bikes.

The first professional show I attended was the Laughlin River Run which I think was 1992. I brought out an FXR that I had done and they put me in the Radical Builders Class and I thought, ‘Oh, oh, I’m f**ked!’ I mean it was Arlen Ness, Donny Smith, Pat Kennedy, Dave Perewitz, Ron Finch – I could go on and on dropping’ names of guys that were all in this class and here I was, this little kid with long hair down to my ass, and I’m rolling’ this bike in and I can’t even talk! Anyway, long story short – I won the show!

Really?

PY:Yeah! I’ll remember it to this day. They called out my name and I almost fell over. Then some builders came over to me and basically said, ‘Who the f**k are you?’ We started talking…’

PY14

They were cool huh?

PY:Oh yeah! Totally, yeah, totally. Actually Keith Ball came over to me and said the same thing. I said, ‘I’m Paul and I’m from Phoenix and this is what I do’. He said ‘F**ken A!’ So, from that meeting, Keith wanted to do a Master Builder article, but I said, ‘Isn’t it just a little premature?’ as I felt I was just getting started.

Keith said, ‘No, it’s not.’ He’d just started the magazine VQ which had a feature called Master Builders, so in VQ#4 or something, I don’t exactly remember which issue; he made me the Master Builder. That was my first magazine article.

How old were you then?

PY:I was 29 and the article on me that he did really started things rolling’ and brought some attention to the shop. The guy I was sharing accommodation with at the time was working for Microsoft and he knew about the Internet, which practically nobody had heard of at the time, but he was part of developing it. He made me a website and back then nobody had a website. Well we just started rolling’. The parts that were on that bike I made by hand with a little mill at the shop and I just started makin’ 10 at a time. I started going to shows with my little parts in the back pack.

On that bike?

PY:Yep. The bike went on after that, to be the ‘International Show Car Association’ (ISCA) International Champion – so it won everything. It was huge. Now building it had been a little private passion of mine and I kept it hidden under a blanket in the corner of the shop and I’d work on it at night when everybody else had gone home.

About halfway through building it one of my customers called in very late one day and it was uncovered as I was working on it. At that time I didn’t have much money, and but if I made $5 I spent $5 on the bike. Well he said, ‘That thing’s amazing, finish it for me. Here’s a blank cheque. I don’t care what it costs, I just want you to have full reign for whatever you can dream up’.

Now this was in the early '90s and I made a huge headlight from a solid billet block. In fact I made tons of billet stuff; I was carving’ all night long. Now you just didn’t see much billet stuff back then, virtually nobody was doing anything in billet. Pro One wasn’t even a company doing billet mirrors and billet gas caps or whatever. Everything was die cast – the most radical thing you could get was a bullet turn signal from Drag Specialists for sixteen bucks – there was just no big ‘aftermarket’ at that point.

I also cut the swing arm and put a 180 tire in and, believe me, nobody back then had ever seen a tyre 180 on a bike.

PY15

You were way ahead of the times then?

PY:Well yeah, but it’s just what I thought was cool. Everything was smooth, there wasn’t a bolt on the bike and he eventually took delivery of it after letting me show it for a year and a half. I think he still has it. I wish I had a photo to show you.

You could say Keith did a lot getting you started then?

PY:Oh – yeah! He went on to be a mentor I guess, I would often call him and ask for advice. I’d also call Arlen Ness and say, ‘How do I get in the parts business? I’ve got these cool parts and I don’t wanna sell ‘em to CCI’ because at the time it was widely believed that they signed everything over to China and got ‘em copied. It wasn’t true, but that was the reputation they had. So Keith would give me advice, Arlen would give me advice along with other people I would also call.

Then Keith would come up with special projects – Keith’s always having some weird bike being built – he’d call me and say, ‘I’m doing this FXR Bagger and Jesse’s making me some aluminum saddle bags. When he’s done, I’m gonna have him send the bags to you. Why don’t you make a cool headlight and taillights to install with LED’s?’ We’d do that and then what he’d do is a tech article and write ups on ‘em and get us a lot brass. We were all cool to be working’ on Keith Ball’s bikes.

PY16

Yeah – you would have been.

PY:It worked out for him too ya know– he got some pretty cool stuff and it worked out for us – we got marketing we couldn’t afford. I got hooked up with Howard Kelly the editor of Hot Bike at the time and we became good friends and he also featured tons of my stuff. He was very instrumental in getting me published too with lots of magazine coverage. I really think that I am probably the most published builder in biker magazine history. We literally have something like 450 magazine features – that’s not including the write ups on what we make – I mean, just bike features! It’s staggering and includes around 200 covers. There’s so many I have ‘em in closets! I change them in the shop all the time as there’s no room to put them all on display.

You’re obviously proud of yourself for your achievements, as you have every right to be.

PY:Well I am very proud that I’ve been able to support myself for 22 years and I’m very happy that I’ve made a living doing something I love. I’ve taken care of my family and I’ve supported a lot of employees. I think we’ve made some terrific contributions to the motorcycle industry and lifestyle.

The ego part of me enjoys the fact that there are some styles that I credit myself with. I don’t need anybody else to agree with me, I know it! That’s the cocky side of me. I see certain things that I know I started. I don’t need to have anybody give me a plaque for it and I’m proud of that. Somebody asked me the other day, what goals I had, or what’s next for me? I said, well I don’t have nothing’ left to prove. I don’t walk around with some itch that needs scratching’.

I’m real comfortable and I’m happy with what I’ve accomplished. But as I get older, I’m getting a bit more business minded. I want to strengthen my business and I want to strengthen my parts catalogs and I want to expand my dealer and distributor networks When there’s a radical bike to be built, I’m in it every day, but the day-to-day operations I don’t handle that much. I walk around and see what’s going on – shake hands with my customers. I’m definitely accessible in my shop.

Most of me is marketing new products, catalog publishing, dealer and distributor relations. That’s the kind of stuff I’m handling. I’m good at it and there’s really no one else who can do it in my company. So I’m the guy that’s got to handle it. I’m the guy who’s gonna think of the new stuff – it’s gonna have my name on it .

What is next for you?

PY:I’m having tremendous fun with this bagger thing, I’m really diggin’ it. It’s almost like starting over in a way. I’m creating a new style for baggers that I’m really into. I’ve got my own thing I’m doing and it seems that everybody likes it. Which is so much better ‘cos it’s not much fun when everybody thinks it sucks.

The baggers haven’t taken of quite yet in Australia.

PY:It’s startin’ to. The guys from Custom Central have picked up the whole Bagger Nation line. We’re doing a couple of baggers for them now that we’re going to ship over here, probably in the next 6-8 weeks. I think there’s a lot of irresponsibility in a lot of bikes being done out there. Harley-Davidson’s engineering is 1000 times better than they are. If it wasn’t for Harley, none of this would exist.

You see it on my bikes; 98% of my customs have Harley-Davidson motors in ‘em. I remember when it used to be, when you wanted something custom, like that FXR I did, you took a stock bike, you chopped up the frame, you cut it in half, you cut it in 10 pieces. You did whatever you wanted with it and then put it back together and you had a custom bike. You couldn’t go buy an Atlas. Now, in the U.S. there are 700 frame makers doin’ the most crazy, stupid stuff. I do a custom Harley.

PY17

I love it when people get on their Big Dog or whatever – and say ‘Look at my Harley chopper’. You show me one part on that thing that’s Harley. Why say Harley chopper? It’s like the ‘Boss Hoss’ – they call them V8 Harleys – what’s that?

I love what Harley’s doin’ right now – I think they’re doin’ the best bikes they’ve ever done. I’m proud of them. If I had it my way I’d own a Harley-Davidson franchise. I would absolutely love to be an owner or partner in a Harley-Davidson franchise that would be a huge fantasy of mine; I would jump on that in a minute. Why I’ve never really aggressively pursued it I don’t know…..

Maybe it’s your next thing?

PY:I don’t know, maybe. I think what we’re going to start doing, is doing some different stuff for some different models. The Rocker needs some help.

Yeah, it does!

PY:The Cross Bones is cool and I can make it even cooler. Sportsters, Dynas, who knows? I’m going to start doing the Black Bagger Nation. I’m gonna start doing separate sections, celebrating certain styles of motorcycles. We’ll see how that works out. If Bagger Nation is any indication, that’ what you’ll be seein.'

What do have in your stable?

PY:I’ve got a few really radical customs that I’ve been working on for awhile. The Bagger Nation has taken me away from them and they’re sitting there collecting dust. We’ve got a pretty crazy aluminum-bodied bagger that I’m hammerin’ out right now that I’m not going to do anything with, it’s just a ‘cos I can kinda thing.

I’ve had a big love for Mercury’s for years,’49, ’50, ’51 Mercs. I have a ’49 so, I’m gonna do a bagger style after this ’49 Merc. Do you know what a Rapid Prototype Machine is? It’s an advanced method of computer design. Take this hat for example. I can design it in three dimensions on my computer, then I can take it and import it to the RPD Machine and the RPD Machine will produce it for me and I can take it out, decide if it’s right and then make them.

I can make nylon parts, I can make threads, I can bolt ‘em on, I can do practically anything with this Rapid Prototype Machine. I’m really kinda getting into it and learning. It’s something I’m teaching myself. I’m gonna make a lot of the parts on this Merc on the Rapid Prototype Machine. I’ve made stuff in the shop, like licence plate frames.

While we currently use it for practical purposes, I want to use it for some really cool shit comin’ up! It’s new technology to me though the car world has been using it and the airline world has been using it forever, but it’s new to me! It’s a really neat toy!

PY18

The American bike scene: How do you see the industry faring?

PY:I think it’s going through a cleansing. All the people rushed to the industry from the TV attention – the OCC stuff, etc. Now they’re all getting a rude awakening and a lot of ‘em are going home. We’ve all been living very high on the hog for the past 10 years and been enjoying unprecedented amounts of business.

The guys that have adjusted their business to deal with that, thinking that it was going to stay like that forever are hurting. Guys like me who just did what I do and stayed the same size and kept my little service shop, did my stuff. I’m fine. I’ve seen the slow down.

We’re stuck with a lot of inventory for sure. We have containers of frames and rolling chassis because the demand stopped like someone threw a switch. One week we’re shipping 20 a week, virtually the next day none! It stopped, just like that.

Our economy is not helping either. We’re having a lot of problems and foreclosures, a lot of people are really crashin’ at this time.

Do you think it’ll change after the election?

PY:I think it’s gonna take a couple of years. I think it’s going to be a slow and steady climb. Our industry is filled with lifelong life-stylers and those people will never go anywhere. It’s exciting to come here and see people approaching this industry with the same passion and the same love for the lifestyle that I’ve had since I was a kid. It’s totally exciting! It’s like, ‘Yeah, you get it!’

PY19

Do you have any plans to come back to Australia?

PY:Absolutely. We’re going to come back in February. Brad was talking about a couple of shows around then. By then I’ll have the other containers here; all the bikes will be here. We’ll be set to formally introduce Custom Central and for me to be a key role in showing my stuff as well. They’re going to be the source for the Paul Yaffe Products Down Under.

There’s also the fact that I just love it here. I was on the phone with Suzy, told her I could have a house here. Those hot summers when we want to get out of Phoenix … I wonder if we could figure out to come down here four months of the year. Wouldn’t bother me a bit, it’s beautiful here. Maybe that’ll be the next thing …

SUPER-RARE A.T.S SPORTS CAR TO MAKE AUCTION DEBUT AT AUTOMOBILES OF LONDON SALE —LONDON, England (3 September, 2009) ? RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby?s, is delighted to announce the consignment of a super-rare and highly desirable 1963 A.T.S. 2500 GTS 3.0-litre sports car to its upcoming Automobiles of London event. One of only eight A.T.S. sports cars produced between 1962 and 1965, this example ? chassis number 004 ? will be offered ?without reserve? at the 28 October event at Battersea Evolution, London, England.

Of immense historical significance, A.T.S. (Automobili Turismo Sport) was an Italian car maker and racing team that was formed by Carlo Chiti and Giotto Bizzarrini, (both of Ferrari GTO fame) who established the company as a direct competitor to their former employer, Ferrari. Financially supported by Count Giovanni Volpi, the company produced a small number of road-going sports cars and a Formula One car which boasted Phil Hill as one of its drivers. The car made its debut at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, and although 12 chassis were produced, only 8 cars were ultimately completed, making each a rare collector?s item.

?We are thrilled to be offering this extraordinarily rare A.T.S. sports car at our upcoming London sale,? says Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM Europe.

?Not only does our London event mark the auction debut for this particular example, but it?s also believed to be the first time an A.T.S. has ever been offered publicly at auction. As such, it is set to draw considerable interest from discerning collectors around the world as they contend for a very important and rare piece of A.T.S. history,? he adds.

Designed by former Bertone stylist Franco Scaglione and built by the Turin coachbuilder Serafino Allemano, s/n 004 is well-known to connoisseurs for its sleek bodywork and is believed to have been the last car assembled as well as one of only five surviving examples of the original eight. Additionally, it is the only known 3.0-litre GTS example built in steel with the rare four dual down-draft 38 IDM Weber Carburettors.

Fitted with a mid-mounted, all-aluminum 3.0-litre overhead cam V-8 engine, producing 300 bhp, and capable of achieving over 160 mph, s/n 004 was originally the personal property of Count Volpi when he left A.T.S., before passing into private ownership. It has changed hands very seldom since and is offered for sale in truly outstanding condition with less than 10,000 original kilometres and having undergone a complete concours mechanical and body restoration. Most recently, the car was displayed at the famous Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance and has been invited to next year?s renowned Villa d’ Este Concours at Lake Como, Italy.

The Automobiles of London event will be held on 28 October, 2009 at Battersea Evolution, London, England. A full day preview will be held on 27 October, 2009 from 10.00am ? 5.00pm GMT, followed by the auction on 28 October from 3.00pm GMT. Admission to the event is by catalogue only which is available for ?70 and admits two.

To discuss consignment opportunities, or for further information on early consignments, please contact RM London at +44 20 7851 7070 or visit www.rmauctions.com .

As for supplements, consider the following:

1. Multivitamin. A daily multivitamin can help to fill nutritional gaps and counteract the negative effects of unhealthy stress on the body.
2. B-complex. B vitamins can help balance mood, calm the nervous system, and increase the efficacy of some prescription anti-depressants.
3. Omega-3 (fish oil) supplement. Either from molecularly distilled fish oil or from krill. A deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids has been associated with increased anxiety and depression.

John Force Racing

NHRA?S JOHN FORCE RACING TEAM GOES GREEN WITH PPG–STRONGSVILLE, Ohio ? September 1, 2009 ? John Force, one of the most successful racers in the history of drag racing, has taken his team green with PPG Envirobase? High Performance paint. The team, John Force Racing, installed a new paint spray booth at its Brownsburg, Indiana facility and switched to the environmentally-friendly, waterborne coatings for all its cars at the beginning of the 2009 NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) season.

?We focus on performance,? says Force. ?Performance in racing includes safety and safety includes taking care of the environment, keeping it safe for ourselves and generations to come. Going green is very important to me. We can?t control everything around us, but we can control what we do as a team, and the paint we use has an impact on the environment. Using PPG waterborne paint is just one part of us being green, but it?s a key part.?

Force?s 34-year NHRA career has seen him set a number of records including 14 Funny Car championships, winning more than 1,000 rounds of competition, winning 126 NHRA national events and more. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in August 2008. The John Force Team he leads comprises of daughters Ashley Force Hood, Brittany Force and Courtney Force, son-in-law Robert Hight and Mike Neff. John, Ashley, Robert and Mike run in the Funny Car category while Brittany and Courtney compete in the Top Alcohol Dragster class. The team was the focus of the A&E cable channel?s Driving Force reality show.

Brandon Baker, in charge of the appearance of the team?s six cars, says Force wanted to find an ecologically sound paint line he could count on for all the colors in the John Force Racing spectrum ? green, white, red, and a variety of blues.

?As you can imagine, our paint problems are a little different than most people?s,? says Baker. ?Our cars go through a lot of abuse ? crashes, fires, fuel spills. We?re always painting and repainting. We wanted to work with a well-known, high-quality brand that could handle the challenges we face, a company that was way ahead of the curve. And, of course, John insists the cars always look as good as possible for the sponsors and fans. After looking around, we knew it was PPG.?

Over the course of the season, the relationship has been a success. ?PPG has been extremely supportive,? adds Baker. ?Plus, our painter Dave Gregory really likes the Envirobase HP product. There are no fumes, no smell. He can really get into the work without noxious distraction.?

For more information about PPG, call 800/647-6050 or visit the PPG Automotive Refinish website at www.ppgrefinish.com. To learn more about John Force Racing, visit www.johnforceracing.com.

FIRST CHANCE HOGAN BOOK, ABOUT TO HEAD TO PRESS–It took awhile to find someone who would step up and help with a cover illustration, but we found a local Wilmington illustrator, Aubry Sheldon, who is working on the painting, with the help up several bike mags and girlie shots.

Hopefully, by the end of next week we will have an illustration in the hands of master art student George Fleming, for the final layout. I know, we’re burnin’ daylight. Might be the best buy for Christmas. Hang On.

FISHING TRIP WITH JACK DANIELS– I finally got around to going fishing this morning but after a while I ran out of worms.

Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth, and frogs are good bass bait.

Knowing the snake couldn’t bite me with the frog in his mouth, I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog and put it in my bait bucket.

Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bitten.I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp, I released him into the lake without incident, and carried on my fishing with the frog.

A little later I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same snake with two frogs in his mouth.

BIKERNET SHOP TALK BETTER BUSINESS SEMINAR–So a few years ago you decided to become an entrepreneur the economy was booming. Over the past 25 years, everybody was spending money and things in the powersports business were terrific. But then the economy got bad taking the easy money with it. But there?s good news: Things aren?t as bad as they seem.

Anybody around remember when Jimmy Carter was president? Let me tell you those were bad times. Each night on the news they would give us the latest, ?Misery Index Number.” Unemployment was around what it is now. Interest rates on money were at 20%. President Carter dressed in a sweater and lectured us via a fireside chat on the virtue of wearing a sweater, turning down the thermostat and suffering along with him. But despite being hobbled, business still ticked along. Then came President Reagan and things took off. But that is a story for another time.

A few basic things to re-consider to improve your bottom line:

Customer relations

One of the obvious ways is to have a very customer friendly environment. Ask yourself why you buy goods and services from a particular place or vendor. I will bet that somewhere in that equation is a customer friendly environment. Customers love to frequent places like this and they tell their friends.

Another way to improve your business is to be there when customers are around. I once heard Tom Peters author of, ?In Search of Excellence,? talk about his experience of going back to the dealer after he bought a car. Because he worked during the week he went in on a Saturday. The dealership was closed. Dealerships, he said, should be open when the customers are around. That?s why the proprietor of a shop I am familiar with is open seven days a week.

As he said, ?Why would I be closed on Sundays and Mondays? That is when the customers are there?. It?s so simple it?s obvious. When your customers know your hours are convenient, they will visit and tell their friends. Longer hours during the busy season never hurt either.

Also, don?t forget to invest in your customers and your business: Once a month or once every other month have a Bar-B-Que. Yes, it?s a pain but it will pay dividends down the road in many, and your customers will tell their friends.

New products and services

Always make it a point to have at least one new product in your place of business every month. This will generate interest from many of your customers. It lets them know that you are keeping up with the latest products and services, and that you care enough to stay up on the latest stuff. Also, access to periodicals and local grass roots publications help keep your customers coming back by showing them that you are connected to the sport and the community.

Advertising

In tough times the first thing that gets dropped is advertising. This is perverse logic. Even though your sales and service numbers have declined, you should never cut out advertising. Shrink the budget if you have to, but stay in front of your customer. When the situation improves, he?ll remember you first because you kept up the conversation. Stop talking to the customer, and your competition will view your silence as an invitation to go after your customers.

High quality craftsmanship and service are the foundation of your business. I shouldn?t have to tell you that staying up on the latest training will improve your personal and business skills. They will. Plus, they will help you weather tough times, and prosper when things get better. Your business is your baby. Nurture it. And don’t forget to advertise on Bikernet. They’re the best!

Scorpion Shifts Gears– (Lake Forest, CA September 1, 2009) After a successful five year run, Scorpion Sports Inc. and brand creator Eric Anderson have parted ways. As of September 1st, Anderson is no longer VP of marketing for the innovative helmet and ExoWear apparel operation.

?We are all very proud of the job that has been done to create the brand from scratch and to become one of the top helmet and apparel brands in North America,? says Scorpion President Rick Miller. ?However we ultimately reached a point where we no longer have the same goals and objectives.?

The decision to terminate Anderson didn?t come easily, but was brought on by the radically changing marketplace. ?We certainly appreciate all that Eric has done for Scorpion, but the basic business paradigm has shifted,? explains Miller. ?We owe it to our partners at Kido Sports to continue to expand the Scorpion brand into the powersports market.?

?Think of me as a free agent,? adds Anderson in baseball terms. ?We all know I have no problem expressing my opinions about how things should run, however I am the minority shareholder in Scorpion, not the majority owner.?

Former National Sales Manager David Alari is also no longer affiliated with Scorpion Sports Inc. For more information regarding Scorpion Sports Inc. please contact newsdesk@scorpionusa.com. To contact free agent Eric Anderson via e-mail: knightrook3@yahoo.com.

KILLCARB.ORG NEEDS YOUR HELP–I just found out today that CARB wants to change the cert reg for atv’s, scooters, motorcycles to require VTSHED and running loss testing. This equipment is extremely expensive. It requires a dyno in a SHED to test for all HC evap emissions. It will put many test companies out of business. Another reason CARB must go.

–Patrick R. B.

Ever notice even after all the gains in air quality that CARB’s policy is: the smaller the problem the more money they spend? This agency is now being funded and they are at “the cost of diminishing returns”..They are regulating the people and business out of existence….Just look what the have done to the powersports business, the automobile industry and the individual citizen?

Next time you or your friends are unemployed don’t blame China, India or Mexico. Put the blame where it belongs, on the regulators and congress. They are regulating us out of everything. Their push for Utopia is killing everything.

Prohibition

OPEN LETTER TO ALL 535 VOTING MEMBERS OF THE LEGISLATURE– It is now official:

The U.S. Postal Service was established in 1775 – you have had 234 years to get it right; it is broke.

Social Security was established in 1935 – you have had 74 years to get it right; it is broke.

Fannie Mae was established in 1938 – you have had 71 years to get it right; it is broke..

War on Poverty started in 1964 – you have had 45 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our money is confiscated each year and transferred to “the poor”; it hasn’t worked.

Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965 – you’ve had 44 years to get it right; they’re broke

Freddie Mac was established in 1970 – you have had 39 years to get it right; it is broke

Trillions of dollars in the massive political payoff called the TARP bill of 2009 shows NO sign of working.

And finally to set a new record:

“Cash for Clunkers” was established in 2009 and went broke in 2009! It took good dependable cars (that were the best some people could afford) replaced them with high priced (people who couldn’t afford to are now making payments) mostly Japanese models so a good percentage of the profits, from the sales, went out of the country. And lastly, the American taxpayers are now going to be dinged with paying for yet 3 billion more dollars of our government?s experiments to make our wallets even thinner.

So with a perfect 100% failure rate and a record that proves that “services” you shove down our throats are failing faster and faster, you want Americans to believe you can be trusted with a government-run health care system? 15% of our economy? Are you crazy?

Truly, the inmates are running the asylum! And what does this say about voters who put such pond scum in office? Maybe we need to let others in on this brilliant record before 2010 and just vote against incumbents.

–James Schnarr

You missed a couple. How about the war on drugs–it failed, cost billions and a half million are still in jail. What about prohibition? That didn’t work. The list goes on. How about the agency established in the ’70s to reduce our dependency on foreign oil. The agency is still growing, the budget continues to climb, but in 30 years what have they accomplished? unbreakable_levers_r2_c7

ASV C/5 SHORTY LEVERS TUCK IN TO SET WORLD RECORD AT BONNEVILLE SPEED WEEK– HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (September 1, 2009) – ASV clutch and brake levers gave the Race Tech-FL Racing CBR600RR one of many small aerodynamic edges needed to break the five-year-old 650cc M/G (modified, gas) record of 157.556 mph with a 162.026 mph run at Bonneville Speed Week.

Breaking big speed records is all about sweating the smallest details, said Bonneville veteran and Race Tech owner Paul Thede: “Although it’s hard to measure how much closer each modification gets us to land-speed records, you’d be surprised by how all of the little aerodynamic tricks add up to big mph gains.”

Thede, who piloted the bike to this and three other records, continued: “The stock levers sit out in the breeze, while ASV’s shorty levers stay within the wind bubble, adding to the total aerodynamic package. Without a doubt, these are well-made products that bolted right on.”

In addition to providing record-breaking aerodynamic advantages, ASV’s innovative brake and clutch levers feature a pivoting design that allows the lever to fold out of harm’s way in the event of a crash or tip-over. Instead of bending or breaking, the levers simply pivot away from the handlebar when impact occurs and spring back instantly.

To fit all hand sizes and control preferences, each ASV C/5 Sport lever comes in the wind-cheating “shorty” size or the standard length and has a 3-in. range of on-the fly reach adjustment that can be dialed in throughout 100 micro clicks. They’re available in black, gold and raw billet (silver) anodized matte finishes for most late-model sportbikes.

Made in USA, ASV’s high-end C/5 sportbike levers are carved from 6061 aluminum billet, have sealed bearings, stainless-steel pivot bushings and fasteners, and come with chrome silicon high-tension springs. They’re fully rebuildable, carry a five-year guarantee and retail for $125.

D&D DELIVERS A NEW PERFORMANCE KIT FOR 2010 FLHX / FLTRX TOURING BIKES– D&D Slip-ons & Zipper?s Hi-Flow Performance Package For Street Glide & Road Glide

D&D has released the BOSS Glide slip-on performance kit for stock 2010 FLHX / FLTRX Harley-Davidson Street Glide & Road Glide motorbikes, which delivers increase power and torque across the entire RPM range. The kit includes a show-quality chrome D&D BOSS Glide slip-on and a Zipper?s HiFlow air cleaner.

The team at D&D spent hours in the dyno room refining the performance kit to deliver power and torque right off of idle and into the mid RPM range? right where you ride.

At idle, the motorbike is deep, boomy and full of character. Once the throttle is cracked the sweet basso-profundo notes just keep on getting better. Not only does the pipe look good, it is a wonderfully sounding experience for the rider.

?Enthusiasts can’t believe that our Performance Kit can deliver this much power and torque without a tuner upgrade,? explained Dave Rash, The Pope of Pipe. ?We spent hours on the dyno perfecting it.? ?With just a wrench and a ratchet, every 2010 Street Glide & Road Glide touring owner can be up and running within an hour. That saves time and money.?

D&D selected Zipper’s HiFlow air cleaners because it is reusable and flow characteristics. It is manufactured with high quality 100-percent washable, pleated filter elements made from multiple layers of surgical-quality cotton gauze material, which traps the smallest dirt particles.

The dyno chart and dyno video with audio clip for both the BOSS Slip-on exhaust pipe is located on the website in the catalog section at www.danddexhaust.com. D&D is available at your local dealer or directly from headquarters at 817-834-8961.

IRON BUTT ASSOCIATION REPORT ON BIKERNET– The rules are fairly simple for the IBA Saddlesore 1000. Of course the rider must complete 1000 riding miles in 24 hours. There must be a witness at the start of the run and documentation of the start such as a gas slip . The time on the gas slip serves as the start time. The route of the run, particularly the turn point, if it is an out and back run, must be documented again.

Gas slips will satisfy that requirement and finally at the end/finish there must be a witness and documentation/gas slip.

MYSTERY CORRESPONDENT FROM THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA DELTA– I traded my wandering ways for a cushy little fishing shack here on the river. There’s over 700 miles of waterways along the NorCal delta, including the sloughs that branch off the Sacramento River, and I’m taking my time at riding through all of them.

Been hotter n’ the hinges of hell up here, but the delta breezes kick up at night and cool us all down. Fish are still biting and the coyotes can be heard howling across the fields at night. Got a garden now, and I’ve enjoyed the hell outta just watching my tomatoes grow.

f sign

There’s a lotta history here and the ghosts of the ancestors who built the little communities along the river still wander around and remind us breathing folks to be respectful.

Great riding, lots of funky watering holes, beautiful scenery. Hope you get a chance to cruise up here. We’ll go down and fish off the town dock, chow down on local crawdads and cruise up river to Al the Wops in the Chinese town of Locke where they’re known for letting a bike or two do burn outs on the old wood floors in the bar. The wild days of the Gold Rush are still alive in the delta.

unkle monkey bikes

UNCLE MONKEY GARAGE DOCTRINE FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND– Garages speak of us as an individual. Like our motorcycles they are an extension of who we are. Some feature gleaming painted floors, precision tools, everything in its place. Some are bursting at the seams as parts and junk with a thin coat of dust clinging to the grease cover. Others are man caves with a pool table, killer stereo, beer fridge, and plenty of stools to bench race from. Others are bare bones; only what is absolutely necessary to do the job. If they don’t have it they have a friend who has what they need.

Others are barren, relying on their friends/dealership to keep their bikes running. And yet others have been over run with everything but. The door rolls up to reveal canoes, lawn mowers, deck chairs, boxes of 15-year-old baby clothes, and discarded Christmas decoration. There simply is no room for a car or even a motorcycle.

I’ll be the first to admit it. I’m horrible for keeping my garage clean. It’s not that I don’t have the room or the storage, I’m just plan lazy. While my garage is a far cry from the death traps that some insist on working in, it does have a distinct clutter to it. I only have myself to blame; too lazy to put things back, too scattered-brain to focus on one thing at a time, too obsessed with saving everything, because I may have a use for it down the road. I tried to get in the habit of clearing out my garage. If I hadn’t used it, or fixed it in the last three years it was tossed out. The following week I needed a discarded part, or someone would come by asking if I had one.

If you stop by my garage this week you would be wondering what I’m talking about but that is because I just completed my semi annual “fall” cleaning of my garage in anticipation of the impending winter. A summer’s worth of tools and parts tossed haphazardly into the workbench and the floor; I tend to work to the point of collapsing, leaving no time to put everything back. In the frigid -40 weather tools quickly get thrown on the workbench instead of being lovingly wiped down and placed back into their proper homes. The squalor again accumulates until spring when I finally get to my “spring” clean. Everything finally makes it back into the drawers, the empty part boxes and bags finally tossed from the floor into the garbage next to it only to start the cycle all over again.

I envy many of my friends. Some working in nothing more then a garden shed, the confined ‘scape forces neatness. They are never more then arms reach away from their toolbox. Tools are simple and limited to only the bare necessities. Others have sprawling garages that would make Tim “the Toolman” Taylor envy. They have every tool that one could possibly need, in duplicate, with everything in it?s prescribed spot hanging on the wall; hoists and lifts, stands and pristine parts to mock up with.

I do try to be neat because I really do hate a messy garage. My dad, brother and Uncle are notorious pack rats. It was always an adventure to see what was lurking in the dim corners of the shop. In my searches I have discovered, a new hood emblem from a ’57 Chevy, a set of micrometers, some kittens, an engine scope, a small block 327, an engine from an YZ80, a 1940s NHL Original Six table hockey game, a 1960s gas pump, and a go-cart. Not to mention enough scrap metal to easily retire on. From the darkness new life breathed into something old, something restored, something recycled.

My garage measures in at 9×16. It is just barely big enough to fit a small car into. Fortunately it is just the right size to house my bike and a couple others to work on. It has come a long ways from when I first took possession. At that time the door was hanging off the track, the side door missing, and the wood floor rotted into musky mulch. There was no light, no power, no windows, and the family of bats living in rafters were not happy to be evicted. It has come a long way to now being a secure place for my bikes and tools, a refuge from everyday life. A place to escape from the 9-to-5 world around me. It is a place to work on my bikes, bench race with friends, or to get carried away in an old David Mann picture, or the dreamy eyes of an Easyriders centerfold.

FEMA – The European Motorcyclists’ Federation, NEWS FROM EUROPE–Summer is here! ?At last?, some would say, and it is true that motorcyclists are not the least vocal in complaining about the weather. After the cold months, for many a motorcyclist its has been time to enjoy riding and the benefits it brings, in terms of mobility and practicality. And for many it is, in a way, a new start; after a reduced activity for the winter.

This summer is also a new beginning for the European political activity. The European elections in June marked a new start, and not just because the renewed Parliament is embarking into a new legislative work for the next five years. While the political equilibrium in the hemicycle remains more or less unchan- ged, the polls saw the rise of the Greens as a more powerful and more influential party. With new greenhouse gases emissions targets and the internalisation of external costs of transport being dis- cussed, this new political configuration could well influence European transport policies in the next few years.

On July 1st, Sweden took over the Presidency of the European Union, carrying great hopes in times of economic uncertainty. The Lisbon treaty, still in the constitutional limbo and ready to come into effect, could very soon change the political landscape of the Union, giving more power to the Par liament. Along with Members of Parliament, Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso goes back to work in September, confirmed as the head of the European executive for the next five years. Prai sed or criticised for his self-described position as being at the service of the Member States, will he be forced to shift to a more proactive stance, pressured by the challenges of the economic crisis?

Broken Spoke Campground Lights It Up In ?09 and Sets its Sights on the 70th–Sturgis, South Dakota: Coming off the heels of an exciting and successful 2009 Sturgis Rally, The Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground is looking forward to the 70th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with competitive rates, (especially for early-bookers) and even more improvements to the impressive 600-acre property.

Close to 3,000 campers called the Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground on 79 North their home for the 69th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and as usual the Broken Spoke did not disappoint with free concerts all week ? including incredible shows by Foghat and .38 Special ? a huge, free pool & hot tubs with live entertainment and the finest of bar maids serving up cold ones all week.

The cabins and RV spots were full and the general store was a busy meeting place for hot coffee, supplies and free Wi-Fi. The Limpnickie Lot and the Wall of Death kept people entertained with trike races and daily shows ? and the inaugural ?Good ?Ol Days Raceway? was a hit as anyone versed in the old school had expected. To honor those in our armed forces, the Broken Spoke had the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall on display all week, with a patriotic opening and closing ceremony and a Rolling Thunder Freedom Ride on Wednesday.

broken spoke drinker

The week kicked off with another tribute ? this time to industry greats Sugar Bear and Michael Lichter. This ride and the annual Cycle Source ride which took place on Tuesday both converged on a working ranch with the most gracious hosts you will find anywhere ? and lots of fun and games organized by the family. And of course, while every one else was resting up after 10 days at the rally, owner Jay Allen went out to Bonneville to successfully sent another (8th!) Land Speed Record for Broken Spoke Racing. The man never sleeps!

Given the reputation that the Broken Spoke Campground is building as the ?comfortable campground? with friendly staff, oasis-like pool and tiki bar, cabins, beautiful setting and more, people are already starting to secure their spot for the 70th annual 2010 rally. Until December 31, 2009, rates will continue at $99 + tax, and will increase to $119.38 + tax on January 1, 2010. The 2010 rate is in honor of the rally?s inception in 1938 (the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was cancelled for two years during WWII).

broken spoke cutie w guy

All rates are per person for any length of stay throughout the rally. The campground on 79 North will be open on August 3rd through August 15th, 2010. Private, air-conditioned cabins with mini-refrigerators, microwaves and front patios are available for rent for the 70th rally, along with oversized 30 and 50-amp RV spots. More cabins and bathhouses are in the plans, as well as more RV spots and a caf? next to the General Store.

The Broken Spoke Campground encourages feedback from those who stayed and invites them to send comments and photos from your Sturgis ?09 trip to them at: info@brokenspokecampground.com.

Camping spots can be booked and ?09 Rally photos can be viewed at: www.BrokenSpokeCampground.com.

VETERANS WARNING IF YOU USE VETERANS’ SERVICES– While at the Vista VA Clinic on 28 Aug 09, VA staff were handing out flyers warning of a VA Scam. Here is the content of the warning flyer:

Veterans are reporting that they are receiving calls from people claiming to be from the VA Pharmacy. The callers are telling veterans that the billing procedure for prescriptions has changed, and that the veteran needs to provide his/her credit card number for prescription payment before Pharmacy will fill their medication requests.

Please alert your veterans that this is a scam! All billing for any V A treatment and/or prescriptions is done through the MCCR Section of the V A. If the veteran wishes to pay his/her account by credit card, the veteran must provide the credit card number to our Agent Cashier. Our Agent Cashier is the only V A employee authorized to accept credit card payments. The VA has not changed its policy of invoicing by mail after the prescriptions are filled.

Sheriffs in Two Counties Join “Watch For Motorcycles” Campaign– Sheriff David Clarke in Milwaukee and Sheriff Dave Mahoney in Madison both did 30 second messages as part of the ABATE of Wisconsin and Hupy and Abraham, S.C. motorcycle awareness campaign.

Hupy and Abraham, S.C. has partnered with ABATE of Wisconsin and two County Sheriffs to present these public awareness messages to motorists. In order to ensure that the message is seen by as many viewers as possible, Hupy and Abraham, S.C. has donated commercial prime time air slots for this important awareness message.

Hupy Abraham

Milwaukee and Dane Counties post higher crash and fatality rates than other Wisconsin counties so it made sense to air this message on major television stations in these markets. Although they are public service announcements, they are being aired throughout the day during prime time at the expense of Hupy and Abraham, S.C.

Viewers in several counties will see the Milwaukee and Madison television broadcasts. We invite you to click on the following links to the awareness videos that are being aired to millions of people to see them for yourself.

These messages are only one part of our campaign to bring awareness of motorcycles to other drivers. Hupy and Abraham, S.C. has spent over $100,000.00 this year on our multi-media Watch For Motorcycles campaign.

Wolfgangwiringbook

WOLFGANG BOOK DEAL OF THE WEEK, CUSTOM BUILDER SERIES, ADVANCED WIRING–The one job that even the best mechanics avoid is wiring. Those worries are now over with the introduction of Motorcycle Wiring from Wolfgang Publications. Part of the Custom Builder Series, this new book uses chapters one and two to cover the basics of DC electricity; as well as batteries, starters and alternators. The next chapter provides detailed schematics and repair information on the factory wiring harness used before and after 1994.

Jeff Zielinski, owner of Namz Custom Cycle Products and designer of all their wiring harness kits, is the author of Motorcycle Wiring. In the custom bike industry, Jeff is the go-to guy for neat and functional wiring harnesses and the components needed to make a harness work in a unique situation.

Jeff uses over half the book to describe the various harness options available to a person building a custom bike. Is it better to build a harness from scratch or install a ready-made harness kit? And which kit is best for a particular situation? What?s the easiest way to install the harness and route all those wires inside the top tube and the handle bars? These questions and many more are answered in this new Motorcycle Wiring book.

This entirely new Wiring book uses 144 pages and over 300 color photos and diagrams to illustrate all the latest products, the basic circuits, simple and complex wiring schematics, and a complete start-to-finish custom wiring installation.

FEMA logo

The creation of FEMA and institutional developments in Europe–On 25 June 1988, national road riding motorcyclists’ organisations from France (FFMC), Germany (Kuhle Wampe), United Kingdom (MAG UK), Greece (M.O.T.O.E), Austria (MAG Austria) and Luxembourg (LMI) – gathered in Strasbourg. Out of this meeting came the decision to form a European organisation to defend and promote the interests of riders: The Federation of European Motorcyclists (FEM) was born.

Having no or only very limited funding (mainly coming from MAG UK), FEM first Secretariat emerged in Charleroi (Belgium) beginning of the 90’s, with Frank Pearson as first General Secretary. The Office then moved to Brussels in 1992 under the charismatic and passionate leadership of Simon MILWARD, who became the real driving force of the Federation. From now on, riders would be represented in the heart of the EU legislative process.

Ten years later, on 10 January 1998, the Federation of European Motorcyclists (FEM) and the European Motorcyclists’ Association (EMA) merged to form the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA).

This event clearly marked a milestone in the history of motorcyclists’ representation. Realizing they shared common interests, the two associations decided to join their forces to represent road riders in the EU. Despite national boundaries, the new Federation linked riders from all around Europe through their mutual beliefs and values. Today: FEMA is strong of 24 National Organisations in 19 different countries, and represents nearly 350.000 riders.

Nowadays, few people know the rich history of FEM-FEMA and why – 20 years ago – the “old generation” founded the Federation. The creation of FEM was closely linked to the evolution of European Institutions. With the development of the common market and the drive to create a European Union, new legislations were drafted for the sake of harmonisation. Unfortunately, several new law proposals – drafted by politicians having no or very limited knowledge of motorcycling – directly restricted or attacked riders’ basic freedom and rights.

New campaigning associations hence emerged in order to respond to riders’ demands and discontent. This political activism was a real citizen’s movement: Thousands of riders would go down the streets to make their voices heard. On 25 Juin 1988, 5000 motorcyclists demonstrated in Strasbourg. This was the first EURO DEMO. Over the years, the number of riders demonstrating, coming from all over Europe, continuously rose to reach 20,000 in Paris (Euro Demo 1994) and 30,000 in Brussels (Euro Demo 1996)!

12th MEP Motorcycle Ride and FEMA 20th Anniversary: Great celebrations in Brussels!

On 25 June 2008, FEMA celebrated its 20th Anniversary and organised a very special MEP Motorcycle Ride in Brussels. All participants expressed their enthusiasm and were unanimous: the event was a huge success! More than 150 people showed an interest in taking part to the event, among which 18 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) coming from 11 different countries, as well as officials form the Commission. The ride through Brussels city centre, the heart of Europe, was one of the keys to success.

BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS – TOO HOT TO WRITE TITLES

Leadshot

Hey,

Another hot week on the coast. The temps are blistering and wild fires are out of control. This is the last day of the Bubs Bonneville Meet, and there’s a rumor that 351 mph has been broken by Dennis Manning, but we’ll wait for the fat lady to sing.

I’m sorta excited about this weekend. Rumor has it that my ThunderHeart Crazy Horse ignition module is due to arrive by UPS today. That means I can wire the 5-Ball factory racer and take it for a ride. I may also run out to El Mirage on Saturday to test drive a 1934 Indy Car restored by Rick Krost of U.S. Choppers and we’ll shoot photos of his latest boardtrack creation.

Let’s hit the news. I’ll bring you more reports on upcoming Bikernet Content at the end:

DIRECT FROM THE BIKERNET UNIVERSITY SCIENCE LAB, FOUR Ways to Minimize Pollution Exposure–Even if you live far from city life and are surrounded by trees and plants that help filter out environmental contaminants, it’s nearly impossible to escape indoor air pollution. You can help prevent exposure to air pollution in your home with these simple steps:

1. Buy an air purifier, one with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter.
2. Add living plants to your home.
3. Get rid of contributors to indoor pollution such as aerosol sprays, paints, incense and chemical products.
4. In addition, I recommend you help neutralize the effects of inhaling pollutants by eating lots of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables and prudently supplementing with a high-quality antioxidant like the one available through the Vitamin Advisor. Check DrWeil.com.

OLD SCARY ANTI-GUN BILL IS BACK–Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009 – Amends the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act to prohibit a person from possessing a firearm unless that person has been issued a firearm license under this Act or a state system certified under this Act and such license has not been invalidated or revoked. Prescribes license application, issuance, and renewal requirements.

The following is a group letter, not a petition. It was written collaboratively by 454 individuals over the course of six weeks. For more about the letter writing process, see below the letter.

Dear Representatives,

WE THE PEOPLE DO NOT SUPPORT H.R.45, the Firearm Licensing bill (2009).

WE are tired of our rights being denigrated and destroyed.

Our vote for any such bill is NO! Further, any politician who votes for this bill or any bill of this type will be noted, and voted against when they come up for re-election.

There are currently over 20,000 existing gun laws on the books and most of them do nothing to stop or curtail criminals. Reducing restictions to lawful gun ownership, however, have proven to do just that. Statistics are clear. Where ever lawful gun ownership flourishes, crime rates, by whatever measure, are reduced. In states with lawful handgun carry laws, crime rates are lower. The rate of crimes committed by lawful owners of firearms is a very small percentage of the overall rate of crimes committed with firearms and those numbers are undeniable.

The federally required NICS is an excellent tool in determining the eligibility of an individual to legally purchase a handgun or rifle. In the city of Kennesaw, Ga., just outside of Atlanta, it is required by law that every home have a gun. After that law was passed in 1982, the crime rate immediately dropped by 89% and has remained among the lowest in the state ever since. Instance after instance shows that high legal gun ownership relates to lower crime, and places that make it hard to own guns or ban them altogether relates to a higher crime rate. Look at many of the larger, supposedly progressive cities and states in the northeastern U.S. Many have some of the highest rates of gun crime there are simply because the criminals know there is little chance of being confronted by a law abiding gun owner.

Stop criminalizing the lawful and law abiding gun owners. The studies by Department of Justice themselves show that these such weapons are used in a statistically insignificant portion of crime. And when they are used, their use would not have been prevented by the legislation.

History and statistics both prove that such bills are destructive to the citizenry. If this bills’ purpose is to truly “protect the public against the unreasonable risk of injury and death” then the Congress should realize that the only threats to the public are from a criminal element that this bill (unlike others that already exist and are not enforced) will not address, and from the government itself. We would like to think it would not happen here, but as the government is getting larger, and the people weaker, we should always consider history.

* In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated. This doesn’t include the 30 million “Uncle Joe” starved to death in the Ukraine.

* In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

* Germany established gun control in 1928. In 1938, the Nazis extended that control to ban the possession of military style weapons and to outlaw the sale of any weapons without government approval. (This sounds a lot like some of the current gun control efforts being pushed for in our country today.) From 1939 to 1945, the Gestapo & SS killed millions of people unable to defend themselves.

* China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up & exterminated.

* Guatamala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up & exterminated.

* Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up & exterminated. The total dead are said to be 2-3 million.

* Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, 1-2 million “educated” people unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

* Defenseless people rounded up & exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million at a bare minimum.

* During W.W. II the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED.

Note: Admiral Yamamoto, who crafted the attack on Pearl Harbor, had attended Harvard University from 1919 to 1921 and was a Naval Attache to the U.S. from 1925-28. Most of our Navy was destroyed at Pearl Harbor, and our Army had been deprived of funding and was ill prepared to defend the country. It was reported that when asked why Japan did not follow up the Pearl Harbor attack with an invasion of the U.S. Mainland, his reply was that he had lived in the U.S. and knew that almost all households had guns.

* Gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results: Australia-wide, homicides went up 3.2 percent; Australia-wide, assaults went up 8.6 percent; Australia-wide, armed robberies went up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent). While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady DECREASE in armed robbery with firearms, that changed drastically upward in the first year after gun confiscation… since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed; There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults on the Elderly. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort & expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

With guns…. We are “citizens”.

Without Them…. We are “subjects”.

WE THE PEOPLE do not give our government the right to track our every movement and location, registration of our personal property, track commerce of our personal propery, keep our personal identification information (or property {whether firearms or ammunition} or possessions) in a federal or state database, the federal government to run laws in our state or local municipalities, or confiscate our firearms for any reason. We are not criminals, and WE THE PEOPLE do not give the government the right to treat us as such.

The undersigned.

Worlds Fastest Music

indian

world1

Here’s a strange one. I received an e-mail inviting the Bikernet.com Staff to a private screening of The World’s Fastest Indian movie. I missed the first one, with the cast, including Anthony Hopkins and all the motorcycle press. I grew up in Los Angeles. I have a burr in my boot for watching folks, press, whatever clamor to hang with celebs. I passed.

Another opportunity cropped up for a private screening, but it appeared to be more casual, a group of movie music writers and composers. We slipped in the back and caught the flick about Burt Munro’s efforts to make it to Bonneville from New Zealand and test his high performance skills on the salt flats. The movie hit home in so many respects. It’s a film about a middle-aged man who builds fast motorcycles in his garage. What would strike a cord more resoundingly to this 40-year biker, whose building two motorcycles to take to Bonneville, and was on the team that broke the World Land Speed Record in 1996.

It also hit home ‘cause Burt liked to do it himself, in his funky, wood garage, and he had a good time. We enjoyed every struggle, mechanical problem, shipping dilemma and Burt’s never-say-die drive.

Is that the Bikers Code (Code of the West), or what?

The movie was cool, but this PR guy, Tom Kidd, contacted us again and asked if we would like to meet the music composer, J. Peter Robinson. At first I thought, he must be a rider and enjoys Bikernet. Then I conjured they’re (the production company) offering Anthony Hopkins to Jay Leno and Robinson to Bikernet. I was trying to make a connection, but stumbling. Then it hit me. We’re not producing a music web site. What the fuck can we write about? “Mr. Kidd,” I said over the phone, “does Robinson ride?”

“Let me check,” Kidd said. All PR guys are required to check.

A day later and two committee meetings, and I received a call, “Nope,” Kidd said. “He never rode. Folks wouldn’t let him.”

I cringed. No self-respecting man let’s rules get in the way of riding motorcycles. There’s that Code of the West again. I broke a pencil, threw it in the trash, shut off my computer and headed to the shop. I needed to weld something.

Kidd sent us J. Robinson’s impressive bio, containing hundreds of movie and television credits including the music for Wayne’s World and Jackie Chan’s First Strike. He performed with Eric Clapton, Melissa Etheridge and Al Jarreau to name a few. He’s written for John Schlesinger at Orion pictures, Wes Craven at Paramount and Dean Semler at 20th Century Fox. I don’t know shit about the music business so I called Black Market John in the Bikernet Music Studios out front and said, “What’s it mean?”

He didn’t answer. He was stoned. I went back to welding. I burnt my thumb and came up with a notion—the bike. Bikernet had to have the bike. I called Kid. “How about something on the bike. I don’t want to up-stage the music, but we’re a bike site.”

world2

“I’ll check,” Kidd said and hung up.

Another 24 hours passed and an e-mail blipped onto my screen. It glistened with a story about Burt’s racing history, shots of Burt Munro, the bike and even the new owners. In less than two hours the feature was published on Bikernet, in Bandit’s Cantina, since it was a famous historic piece.

A couple of days later I was talking to Dave Perewitz and it dawned on me. I could look at J. Peter Robinson's musical adaptation for the Worlds Fastest Indian similar to a builder commissioned to build the music for this tribute to speed. I called Black Market John again, since I don’t know shit about composing music for a toothpaste commercial, let alone an entire movie. He said something about rifts and I assumed the gang was having an argument in the studio. I hung up.

I had a plan so we headed into Hollywood to the old Thunder Roadhouse, which is now the Saddle Ranch country-music restaurant and nightclub. It rocks, every night. And the girls, goddamnit!

The Kidd and J. Peter Robinson were eating nachos and waiting as we rolled up. I’m a straightforward kinda guy so I spilled my guts about my lack of musical acumen and introduced them to our Black Market dealer. J. Peter confessed that his folks wouldn’t even allow him to ride a bicycle. “That didn’t stop me from sneaking out and finding a ride,” Robinson said. He grew up in the south of England where there were no sidewalks or paved streets. But in 1962 he straddled a Vincent Black Shadow on the sly, gripped the bars in the town of Brighton, and dropped it at the first stoplight.

“I broke my leg under that monster,” J. Peter said and so ended his motorcycling career. “I’m still a petrol head.” He enjoys speed and sports cars and drives a BMW M-5, 500 hp speedster, “I wish cars had the handling and performance of motorcycles.”

My mind was spinning as I opened the soiled Saddle Ranch menu and tried to scan its contents. How was I going to describe to our readers the building of a movie score and relate it to a bike build? I just kept asking sordid questions and the process began to take shape. As it turns out the master builder behind most movies is the director, in this case, Roger Donaldson.

world3

As in building a custom motorcycle, the plan for a movie comes from the Director. “It’s his vision from the beginning to the end.” I was beginning to get the picture. J. Peter was the painter behind the custom bike build. “It was a matter of capturing Burt’s strange, quirky, likeable character,” J. Peter said. Roger flew J. Peter to New Zealand to watch one of the initial film cuts. “Piano seemed to be the thing,” Robinson said of the general character of the movie. His formal classical training in music revolved around the piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Peter’s paintbrush (or airbrush) was the collective keys on his piano.

I asked if he studied music from Burt’s salt flat era in the late '40s. “It’s not a period piece,” Peter said, “Film music should be timeless.” I was beginning to witness how the man thought about the tunes designed to follow Burt’s pursuits. “Even the funniest films have drama,” he said. Burt’s character dictated lightness to the music while following the slight drama of a straight documentary. Burt was a lighthearted guy who had tremendous drive for speed. His struggles for goals and performance demanded moving feeling without sentimentality. “I hate sentimental music,” Peter said. “The director's love for the machines and his passion for going fast governed much of his direction. Roger produced a documentary about Burt Munro in 1971.”

J. Peter returned from New Zealand and organized his Piano ramblings, like a painter may have organized his sketches for the ultimate paint job. Then he gathered friends in the music business, as if collecting the sheet metal for the job. He writes and directs the music for two or three films a year in addition to scores for television movies and series. I was sure he had access to talented teams, like a painter has body men, bondo specialists, airbrush artists and pinstripers.

world4

With all the elements in hand, guided by the director’s mental picture, Peter slept on the concept. Like any artist he ponders his musical sketches. “With the piano as voice we added marimba, guitars and orchestration,” Peter said. “Only ½ hour of the movie lacks music.” He explained that generally 45 minutes sans music, in a two hour movie is too much. That smacked of the paintwork on a bike. Most of the time it contains sheet metal and frame, but some builders stretch it to the wheel rims, oil tank and headlight. At a point it becomes too much. “The music must enhance each scene, without getting in the way.”

”It’s all about manipulating emotions,” Peter said, “It’s critical to determine when to start and stop the music right down to an individual film frame.” In Burt’s movie the Indian took center stage several times as it whistled down the flats or split the kid’s eardrums in the garage. Then occasionally the music replaced the Indian thunder for scene effect.

”There’s a rule in film making that if you see it you must hear it,” Peter said. “That’s nonsense, but it’s often tough to sway a director from the code.”

The next step included determining the size of orchestra to use, sorta like the number of colors in a paint job or the depth of each hue. Peter chose between a 45 and a 60-piece orchestra depending on the music style, and of course the budget. “We fight budgets, especially with heavy action movies,” Peter said. “Cut one special effect and let the music flourish.”

The next stage included mixing and editing as if a painter stirring the paint formula and hitting the spray booth. Editing is the final sanding and polishing to draw out that world-class finish. “The music is the raw material for a film’s background,” Peter said. “Roger was very specific. It was a story of undoubtedly spirit and about filling a dream. He had a tear in his eye when he watched the final cut for the first time.”

Like a custom bike show display can add extra touches to the final product, the DVD of this movie will contain the 1971 Roger Donaldson documentary about Burt, The God of Speed. Roger was a Burt Munro fan and wrote the World’s Fastest script. Peter was apart of his team and worked with Roger on two other movies, Cocktail and Cadillac Man.

world5
J. Peter Robinson. The man behind the music.

We left the Saddle Ranch Nightclub with a thorough understanding of the music behind a film and it worked, equating it to a top-notch paint job on a master builder’s bike. It must enhance without demanding attention. It must thrive to follow the lines and the master’s direction. Or was it the three-whiskey lunch that made the connection work?

Like bike painters who are men of honor, promise what they deliver and go the extra mile for the builder, J. Peter obviously is a craftsman who makes good on his word. It’s apparent by his bio, he’s a talent who takes direction, shows up on time and makes the project work within budgets and guidelines. A man of honor who contains this level of talent—a rarity in any circle.
