STRANGE TIMES BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for July 20, 2017

Hey, We live in strange times, but actually it’s all good—sorta. For years we’ve been told the whole safety mantra thing and save the planet, control-freak bullshit. At least someone is shacking the trees and giving freedom a chance. Without freedom we don’t have anything. It’s all so interesting. But without the ability to question and push for understanding and freedom we might as well lock ourselves in caves and turn out the lights. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to ride free and party till the end. Bike Feature — Tribute Chopper To Garry Hughes

Camarillo is a city in Ventura County, California. It’s south of the 101 Freeway and north of Pacific Coast Highway just minutes from entering Malibu along the winding coast. Camarillo is named for Adolfo and Juan Camarillo, two of the few Californios (pre-1848 California natives of Hispanic ancestry) to preserve the city’s heritage after the arrival of Anglo settlers. They had to be boot tough and rattlesnake mean. Settlers took everything from everyone. For decades Camarillo was a riders paradise between Ventura and Los Angeles and home to one of the mainstays in the Harley aftermarket industry, JIMS Machine. Jim Thiessen built a family owned business around special tools for builders all over the world, to make their Harley mechanical jobs easier and quality transmission parts. Read more.

Lee Munro’s Indian Screams Through Calif. Lake Bed To Set Land Speed Record

Fifty years after Burt Munro set a land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats, his great-nephew Lee Munro has also set a speed record. Lee Munro piloted his custom Indian Scout V-twin to 186.681mph (300.4kmh) to set a record at the El Mirage dry lake-bed speed trials in Southern California. The record break was officially taken by the Southern California Timing Association, which also runs Speed Week in Bonneville, this year to be held August 12 to 18. A good way for him to understand or compare high speed was that: “its only fast if you fall off,” he said. Following in Burt’s footsteps added no pressure but was rather an honour, Munro said. “I’m super-proud, super, super-privileged,” he said. “It’s a massive thing what Burt’s done.” A lot of people in the industry knew of his great-uncle, which made Lee’s connection with people more special. “It’s an awesome thing.” Perhaps getting a taste of what his great-uncle was feeling after his record break half a century ago, Munro said felt a lot of relief and was elated when his own record break sank in. He said he knew he had broken the record while he was still on his bike and before officials had even come over. El Mirage was about testing the bikes out and gathering data, so setting the record there was just “the icing on the cake”, he said. He had no mechanical issues in his test races but did have to alter the way he operated the gears. His bike was set up for the road so he had to move his gears backwards, he said. Munro will return home to Christchurch for a few weeks before heading to Bonneville in August. Racing at Bonneville would be different to El Mirage, with a different

Tech Feature — Love Jugs To The Rescue

Goin’ thru the motions of getting Onxx ready for the annual pilgrimage to Sturgis has been a major pain in the ass this year. Cigarette lighter-power for GPS not working, new brake lines, rebuilding front master cylinder, exhaust rubbing on Primary cover, needs new skins, and the list goes on. As usual, I’m just trying to cover the bases for three weeks on the road coming up. Read more.
