Florida motorcycle club holds 15th annual memorial ride honoring fallen heroes

This year it began with a memorial motorcycle ride in honor of the first female corrections officer killed in the line of duty. More than two dozen officers in Southwest Florida have been killed in the line of duty in recent years. Darla Latham is one of the officers. Every year the Florida Defenders Motorcycle Club makes sure to honor her. Vinny Gorgogolione is the President of the Charlotte County chapter of the Defenders. “Today’s our 15th annual fundraiser in the name of the Darla Latham who was killed in the line of duty during a prison break in 2003,” said Gorgogolione. Hundreds of bikers from different chapters all around the country gathered for Latham and other fallen officers. “I think it’s important to focus our efforts on officer safety and those that do get injured or killed on the line of duty that there’s somebody there to try to help them and their families out,” Gorgogolione said. Toney Mineo recently retired as officers and they rode from the east coast to who their support for this forever brotherhood. “It’s heart-wrenching for first of all that we know what they go through,” Mineo said. “Our job as a former law-enforcement is to make sure they’re OK and if they need anything to step up to the plate.” The money raised is to support our local men and women in blue. Harley-Davidson Dealer remembered as the community’s unsung hero

When Wayne Houpt achieved his goal of becoming a business owner with Wayne’s Auto Body in 1962, it was just the beginning of the many accolades he would earn and lives that he would touch. Houpt, born Oct. 1, 1938, was a family man and owner of several North Shore businesses for nearly 60 years. He died March 28 due to heart failure. The Famous Wheeler Dealer Houpt met his wife and business partner, Joan, during their senior year in high school. The pair were together for 59 years. He started his entrepreneurial career with Wayne’s Auto Body in Saukville. Houpt expanded the business with a used car lot and moved the shop to Grafton, where he opened Suburban Motors of Grafton Inc. In 1975, Houpt added Harley-Davidson motorcycles to his inventory and in 1985, he moved Suburban Motors to its current location, 139 N. Main St., Thiensville. That’s when Houpt earned the moniker “The Famous Wheeler Dealer.” He was known for accepting trades like cows, dental service and boats from customers who were a bit short on cash. Houpt’s daughter, Sandy Rath, said she remembers her father taking the family to various burger restaurants when she was a kid. Rath would later realize Houpt was taste testing the food in anticipation of opening his own restaurant one day. Houpt opened Wayne’s Drive-In in 1998, at 1331 Covered Bridge Road, Cedarburg. Rath said when the drive-in first opened, Houpt would eat there all the time. “He would go to Wayne’s the minute it opened,” she said. “He was like a kid in a candy shop. He loved that drive-in. Motorcycle community helps Belen Veteran after fire

Saturday morning dozens of men and women from the motorcycle community stepped up to help him out. Daniel Romero has come a long way since he lost his home in a fire back in September. For months he and his dogs have been living in devastating conditions, with no heat, or water. Romero says he’s never felt more alone in his life. But now the motorcycle community is showing him he’s not alone. Saturday morning bikers from all around the metro, who heard about Romero’s situation, helped him clean up his property. Dozens of men and women, along with the Veterans Memorial are helping him get the property ready for a new trailer, that is being donated. Romero says he never expected the outpouring of support, but it’s nice to have the help – so he can get back on his feet again. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff joins motorcycle ride for Ronald McDonald House

The annual ride, called the Ronnie Run, was organised by the Ulysses motorcycle club and raised just under $7000. Goff, a keen motorcyclist, said he didn’t get to go out on his Triumph Bonneville as often as he’d like to. So the Sunday ride was a good excuse to put his gear on and go for a ride with like-minded people, he said. The event attracted about 140 riders, ranging from young children to people in their 80s. It started in Albany on the North Shore and ended at Ronald McDonald House next to Starship Children’s Hospital. Police helped marshal the group along its journey. Goff said he’d been commandeered by the group to come on a charity ride during his election campaign. While he said he couldn’t at that stage, he promised to make the next one – a promise that he made good on on Sunday. Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand (RMHC) supports families when their child is in a hospital and away from home. The Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Room helps to relieve family stresses like paying for a place to sleep near the hospital, organising family meals and needing a friendly ear to listen on tough days. In 2018, it provided more than 4300 people with accommodation and support free of charge at its facilities. “For all of us with kids and grandkids, the worst thing you would want to have happen would be to have them affected by a life-threatening illness,” Goff said. “[RMHC] is one way in which we can stop the stress of families.”

The House Energy and Commerce Committee, who has jurisdiction over autonomous vehicle technology, is now chaired by Frank Pallone of New Jersey. This puts Republicans in a role they not been in since 2010, seeking the help of Democrats to tackle legislative priorities. Republican Greg Walden of Oregon, the previous chairman and now ranking member as well as Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers of Washington and Bob Latta of Ohio sent Chairman Pallone a letter regarding the need for Congress to act on autonomous vehicles legislation. “We write to urge the Energy and Commerce Committee to take up bipartisan self-driving vehicle legislation. Last Congress this Committee worked across party lines to draft H.R. 3388, the Safely Ensuring Lives Future Deployment and Research in Vehicle Evolution Act (SELF DRIVE Act). The SELF DRIVE Act was an example of this Committee at its very best: working together, across the aisle, to develop legislation that will advance lifesaving technology.
