Bandit’s Cantina: Episode 95

Change is in the Wind
By K. Randall Ball

Bandit couldn’t wait to peel back to the Cantina. He had a ton on his mind, but the ride felt good. The bike and his mental load lifted without the yipping Melody around, but there was way more.

The highway up the Grape Vine blistered with heat but contained mild traffic. He leaned through the curves as if he floated on air unincumbered by the world around him.

Community gathers for car, truck and motorcycle show to support families in need.

The 13th Annual Cruisin’ for Kids kicked off on Saturday August 14, 2021, off Clinton Highway, benefiting the Mission of Hope’s efforts to support families in need.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Engines roared down the highway in Knoxville over the weekend as trucks, cars and motorcycles gathered for an event meant to help children in need.

It was the 13th Annual Cruisin’ for Kids event benefiting the Mission of Hope’s work to support families in need across East Tennessee. The event wasn’t just to help raise funds for the nonprofit, though. It was also a competition to see who had the best vehicles in a variety of categories.

Awards included categories like the Top 3 Rat Rods, the Top 3 Motorcycles, the Top 3 Trucks, the Top 3 imports, the Top 3 Daily Drivers, the People’s Choice Award and the Best Unfinished.

“Our money is raised through registration for cars, we have a silent auction and we sell t-shirts,” said Mary Anne Gamble, an organizer of the event.

Money raised from the event will go towards buying clothes and toys to be given to underprivileged children around Christmastime.

This effort has forced me to think about all the bullshit in my past, the good and the bad. It makes me think about how and why I survived. I’m sure Sonny had to face the same demons when he started to write about his life. I have a close friend who was a member of the Outlaws for 20 or so years. He spent seven years in prison in the east.

I recently wrote about the fights I was in during the time I was a member. It’s posted in the Life and Times of Bandit. I needed to set the record straight after George Christie’s book. I don’t talk much about anything else I was involved with.

The violent side of life subsided and I became aware of the chopper mission. Sex, chrome and creativity. We were living is strange untamed times. The moral fabric of our society became unleashed with rock and roll, hot rods and choppers. We were free like never before and girls were also free to explore and exploit their beauty like never before.

The Highwayman’s life is such, too many people and too few relationships. These tales from distant roads describe with a pulp flavour the men on the run. They run from the law, from conformity, from daily grind, from love and from themselves. Indulge yourself in a fantastical world of adventure and possibility.

The rider loves nothing but his iron horse, but he is lured into temptations on his journey; can he defeat the demons of his past chasing him. Crime is an inevitable truth of modern society. The urban cowboy rides over obstacles to justice, crushing the evil-doers while saving the damsel in distress.

Mark Curer writes fascinating variables of Biker Fiction, shifting from loner to posse riders and from murder to romance. His style is unique, voice murky and words playful. His protagonists battle small goons to organised crime syndicates. The female characters are daring lady-luck and baring their heart. Change of times, change of roads, change of heart – you will go through all as you revel in the raw tales in this collection of short-stories.

Bikernet Book Review: Keith R. Ball predicts the future back in year 2000

Bikernet Book Review: Keith R. Ball predicts the future back in year 2000
Revisiting Sam “Chopper” Orwell written by Keith Ball almost two decades ago.
By Ujjwal Dey

George Orwell introduced the world to the idea of Big Brother, doublethink, and newspeak in his celebrated and prophetic novel ‘1984’.

A divided America has the world at panic with everyone and their pet dog uncertain about the future of the promised land of USA. But what does this bold new future mean to us bikers with our nomad lifestyle and love of everything that is good and pure. We were once bracketed with hippies and freethinkers. Now we are labelled as patch wearing misfit outlaws and one-percenters.

Well, a brief and graphic illustration of this dystopian future is available in 2000 novel by Keith Randall Ball titled Sam ‘Orwell’ Chopper in reference to George Orwell’s classic masterpiece ‘1984’.
