HEATIN’ UP BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for April 13, 2023

Hey,

This has been a very interesting week
as you will see in the news. We are simple humans with tremendous resources and options. We get the opportunity daily to test our abilities.

Like I said recently, we just need to get out of bed in the morning and hit it as hard as we can. One of the wonderful things about humanity and today’s technology is the ability to resource anything.

Say, you are trying to build your first chopper and need help. It’s amazing the resources at our fingertips today. Just ask questions, listen carefully and take notes.

Let’s hit the news and then I’ll report on the challenges I faced this week.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

XDA Ready to Rocket Into New Season–

On April 21-23, the XDA will once again bring the best of motorcycle drag racing to the east coast, starting with the 29th annual PGS Spring Nationals season-opener at Maryland International Raceway (MIR).

XDA enters its sixth year of the twenty-three year dynasty of the MIROCK/IDBL/XDA series. And once again, the Miller Brothers have anticipated the country’s climate accurately with five strategic events across the season. This change is easy on the budget and gives racers a consistent five-week break between events to spend time with family and get your bikes ready for the next race.

The XDA events will continue to feature seventeen star-studded classes and a massive vendor midway, giving racers and fans something to see and do over the three-day weekend events.

Class Line-Up:
  • Orient Express – Pro Street
  • DME Racing – Real Street
  • MaxxECU – Pro Xtreme
  • HTP Performance – Super Stock
  • Vance & Hines – 4.60 Index
  • Boosted Bulls
  • APE – Nitrous Bulls
  • 3 Sixty 5 Transport – Monster Bulls
  • Tommie’s Motorsports – DMV Bulls
  • All Motor Bulls
  • HTP Performance – Grudge
  • 1 Stop Speed – 5.60 Index
  • Mickey Thompson Tires – Top Sportsman
  • MPS Racing – Pro ET
  • Brock’s Performance – Street ET
  • VooDoo Components – Bracket Bash
  • Hard Times Parts & Service – Gambler’s Race
XDA is excited to welcome all the new riders to the series this year; the Pro Roll Call lists are full of fresh faces and veterans alike. New blood promises a year full of track action and upsets as new riders work to rise over the class veterans.

The Orient Express Pro Street class features the baddest street tire motorcycles in the World. If you want to see action, XDA is the only place to see full fields of these 650+ horsepower, turbocharged, supercharged, and nitrous-injected motorcycles running at speeds over 230mph in the 1/4 mile in only 6-seconds!

Over twenty bikes are on the rollcall list ready to show out with big numbers. Many teams have been out testing the last few months and are prepared for the competition season to start. Mark Rendeluk and Derek Sobiech will make their Pro Street debuts next weekend. Sobiech is trading in stock wheelbase action, while Rendeluk is losing the wheelie bars.

The “Running of the Bulls” and HTP Performance Afterdark Underground Grudge & Pros program returns on Saturday night from 5pm-11pm with premium grudge racing action. The boards might be off, but the trash talking will be turned up. The XDA brings out the premier grudge racers who aren’t afraid to pick a lane and lay down the quickest and fastest passes on our well-prepped racing surface. Bring your bag and show us whatcha got.

DME Racing Real Street features 7-second, 190mph heavy hitters, and this year we are seeing growth again in the class with eighteen riders on the roll call for the season-opener. George Cross and land speed standout Shane Stubbs will be taking on a class full of veterans and champions next weekend. Come out and see the new faces of the class as they work the quarter mile for a piece of the $3,200 purse.

Saturday, we celebrate the 2022 XDA Champions and the Top 10 finishers in each class with the Awards Ceremony on the BIG STAGE in the pits that you will surely want to attend. All those in attendance will have a chance to win $1,000 in cash prizes courtesy of event sponsor Platinum General Services and owner Ralphie Navarro.

The 1/8 mile heads-up class of MaxxECU Pro Xtreme returns featuring the Turbocharged, Supercharged, and Nitrous Injected big tire wheelie-bar beasts. Six heavy hitters are already signed up and ready to return to action. These bikes are big and loud, don’t miss the action as these riders pilot the ferocious horsepower to the 660′ finish line.

MaxxECU Pro Xtreme is presented by Billy Vose Racing, Fast by Gast, Dunigan Racing, DME Racing, Grothus Dragbikes, Harley Haul, Rob Bush Motorsports, Robinson Industries, Schnitz Racing, Timblin Chassis, and Worldwide Bearings.

XDA introduced the 4.60 index class back in 2013, and it’s grown to be a fan favorite across the country. Vance & Hines 4.60 is the World’s quickest 1/8th-mile sportsman index class running four-second passes in only 660 feet. Sportsman standout and co-host of the Red Hill Podcast Ben Knight, at the last minute, has thrown his hat in the ring for the season opener.

The stock wheelbase, naturally aspirated production machines of HTP Performance Super Stock class, will be back on deck for their fourth year. This class is for true hand clutch riders who must deliver a smooth and controlled launch to be competitive. There is no hiding behind electronic gadgets in this class. With strict modification rules, stock motors, MR12 spec fuel, no air shifters, no dataloggers, etc. the action is true riding skills.

The XDA will additionally hold competition in SIX additional sportsman classes featuring 1 Stop Speed 5.60 Index, Mickey Thompson Tires Top Sportsman, VooDoo Components Bracket Bash, MPS Racing Pro ET, Brock’s Performance Street ET, and the Friday night Hard Times Parts & Service Gambler’s race. XDA offers up to $28,000 in guaranteed payouts for sportsman racers at each event while giving you a safe and professional environment to compete in.

Over 700 Professional, Sportsman, and Grudge motorcycle racers will be in competition all weekend long, battling it out for over $90,000 in cash purse at this event. And don’t forget the vendor midway will be full of great deals on motorcycle parts, accessories and apparel.

Next weekend XDA starts another season of the most competitive motorcycle drag racing you can find in the country, and it all begins at Maryland International Raceway. Make plans now to come out and watch or, better yet, race with us on April 21-23.

NEW SHOVEL CONCEPT ART– The late Shovelhead is one of the most visually interesting engines.

An interesting fact is that the engine was produced until 1984 and replaced by Evolution in the first half of that year, but in 1985 a small number of Shovelhead engines were produced.

These engines were built based on the Evolution cases prepared specifically for the surplus production of parts from Shovel. This small amount of engines went to police motorcycles (FLHP). This must be not a common fact, because very often I encounter accusations that the graphics contain incorrect production dates.

A LITTLE HONEY BEE INFORMATION…
INTERESTING & IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Did you know that one of the first coins in the world had a bee symbol on them?

Did you know that there are live enzymes in honey?

Did you know that in contact with a metal spoon these enzymes die? The best way to eat honey is with a wooden spoon, if you can’t find one, use plastic.

Did you know that honey contains a substance that helps your brain work better?

Did you know that honey is one of the rare foods on earth that alone can sustain human life?

Did you know that bees saved people in Africa from starvation?

One spoon of honey is enough to sustain human life for 24 hours?

Did you know that propolis that bees produce is one of the most powerful natural ANTIBIOTICS?

Did you know that honey has no expiration date?

Did you know that the bodies of the great emperors of the world were buried in golden coffins and then covered with honey to prevent putrefaction?

Did you know that the term “HONEYMOON” comes from the fact that newlyweds consumed honey for fertility after the wedding?

Did you know that a bee lives less than 40 days, visits at least 1000 flowers and produces less than a teaspoon of honey, but for her it is a lifetime.

Thank you, BEES!

Make sure to share this post. I am sure many people will love to know this information.

ELECTRIC TOY CATCHES FIRE IN STURGIS–Wednesday night, a family in Sturgis had to douse a small flame because their 12-year-old daughter’s hoverboard caught on fire in her room while charging.

“The tone of her voice scared me as a bother right away. So I rushed in, and by the time I got in, it was already popping, making some weird noises. I unplugged it quickly. And as I was doing that, there was a loud pop, and then sparks started shooting into the air. And then shortly after that was about a foot and a half tall flame,” said Brad Neuschwander.

Neuschwander said the hoverboard was only three years old. He and his wife had researched an article and found that there had been over 11 deaths and numerous house fires connected to hoverboard incidents.

“My daughter has been showing me “TikTok” since this happened. Kids walking by one of the little boys walking by his hoverboard, and it just blew up into flames,” said Neuschwander.

MONTANA AGAINST CLIMATE FRAUD

Our Governor is a named defendant of HvM. He can do his own defense in parallel with the AG’s defense. He can defeat HvM if he acts very quickly. But he has refused because somebody is pulling his strings.

By their works we shall know them. Those who censor me oppose climate truth. They are against your freedom.

They will reap what they sow. They are hurting you, Montana, and America.

I am Maverick. If you want to save Montana and America, let me fly.

How to win Held v Montana
At the Pachyderm meeting on March 3, 2023, I talked to AG Knudsen. He said he would like to talk to me about Held v Montana. On March 7, I sent him this outline for talking points. He never contacted me. So, he lied to me.

AG Knudsen’s rejection of my help forces me to reveal my game plan to all readers.

For discussion by AG Austin Knudsen and Dr. Ed Berry

Shift burden of proof to plaintiffs
In 2011, the Montana Supreme Court ruled that climate science is not sufficiently settled to support the HvM Plaintiffs’ claims.

In 2011, the plaintiffs said they petitioned MSC directly because dangerous climate change would happen before they get from a district court to the supreme court.

Science says if their prediction was wrong, their science is wrong.
Prove the plaintiffs’ three key theories are false. These theories are:

Human CO2 causes the CO2 increase since 1750, or above 280 ppm.

This CO2 increase causes global warming.

This global warming causes bad stuff to happen.

All Plaintiffs’ arguments are based on their “bad stuff” claims.

With few exceptions, we won’t waste our time challenging their “bad stuff” claims.

We will focus on their unmentioned cause theories, their Achilles heel.

Ask every plaintiff expert the basis of their claims. E.g.:

Ask them if they agree with the three theories above.

“How does human CO2 cause your bad stuff to happen?”

“Do you agree if CO2 does not cause your bad stuff, then you have no case?”

“If you are not an expert in the cause of your bad stuff, who is?”

If an expert says events prove their cause, we will destroy that expert.

Each plaintiff expert will point to Steve Running as their cause expert.

Now we can focus on Steve Running.
A well-prepared trial attorney can shred Steve Running in court.

We begin by getting his explanations on why Theories (1,2,3) are true.

We may ask him if he agrees with UM physicist Dave Andrews on Theory (1).

Then our experts will show why Theories (1,2,3) are false and Running is wrong.

Then, it’s back to Steve Running to prove our experts are wrong, which he can’t do.

Plaintiffs must defend all three theories. We need only to prove one theory is wrong.

Plaintiffs’ attorneys and experts are not prepared to debate the three key theories.
They have spent all their time working to prove their bad stuff is bad.
They simply assume events prove their cause, which is invalid.

You need me to select and train our experts to prove the three theories are false.
No one else knows how to do this.
I will train our experts via Zoom like a coach trains his football team. We must be prepared to make our best case and never contradict each other.

We need our key experts to be in court to hear plaintiffs’ claims and advise your defense attorney on how to respond to plaintiffs’ claims.

Howard Hayden, a friend of mine, is correct in his physics but we must show how his testimony proves Theory (2) is wrong. Otherwise, the MSC won’t get the point.
I am the world expert to prove Theory (1) is false.

I know the best experts to prove Theory (2) is false (it includes Hayden).

I know the best experts to prove Theory (3) is false.

Plaintiffs will claim most scientists agree with them and they have more published papers.

Votes do not count in science, and we have proved Theories (1,2,3) are false.

Proof that a theory is false defeats all claims that a theory is true.

We must define “climate science truth” to mean Theories (1,2,3) are false.

When we win, our definition will change the future of education, energy, and economy in Montana and America.

–Ed Berry

FOSSIL FUELED–The Concert—a landmark event

The first public, corporate-sponsored event I know of that is proudly, unapologetically, pro-fossil-fuel takes place in Midland, TX on April 18th

The first public, corporate-sponsored event I know of that is proudly, unapologetically, pro-fossil-fuel—will take place in Midland, TX on April 18th. There will be a panel of energy executives entitled “Head Held High” at 4:30, followed by a conversation between me and Innovex CEO Adam Anderson at 5:30. Both events are free to attend. (You need tickets to attend the concert portion starting at 6:00.)

Ever since I realized over 15 years ago that fossil fuel use has enormous, widely-ignored benefits to human flourishing (including making us safer than ever from climate danger) I have been trying to get the fossil fuel industry to stand up for itself proudly.

Energy Talking Points by Alex Epstein is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Upgrade to paid
For many years this was, to put it very mildly, a struggle. Contrary to the myth that my pro-fossil-fuel views are a product of the fossil fuel industry, I came to them when I barely knew anyone in the industry (let alone had any financial relationship with anyone in the industry). I had trouble finding anyone who would listen to my “moral case for fossil fuels,” and for years I don’t think anyone in the industry was visibly influenced by my arguments.

But I kept developing my arguments and I kept looking for executives who would find them interesting.

In 2013, I had a breakthrough. I wrote an essay directed at the fossil fuel industry entitled “The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels: The Key to Winning Hearts and Minds” and circulated it to the handful of executives I knew. It quickly became a phenomenon within the industry and it was discovered by a literary agent (Wes Neff) who convinced me (and Penguin) to turn it into the book The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels.

In the almost decade since, as The Moral Case spread, as I created EnergyTalkingPoints.com, and as I wrote and released Fossil Future, I’ve seen significant improvements in the messaging of the fossil fuel industry.

But nothing has made me as excited as an event taking place on April 18th called Fossil Fueled: The Concert in Midland, TX. Fossil Fueled is hosted by Innovex, whose CEO, Adam Anderson, prominently used arguments very similar to mine to take on The North Face several years ago.

–ALEX EPSTEIN

BOOKS by K. Randall Ball, alias Keith “Bandit” Ball

Why would anyone want to read books by a motorcycle outlaw who has been married 5 times, ran off with more women he can count, rode with notorious clubs all over the country and what else.

On the positive side, he’s fought for motorcycle freedom all his life. He’s in three Motorcycle Halls of Fame and three times in the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of fame. He’s been involved in four Motorcycle Lands Speed Records, including the main one at 322.15 mph which lasted 16 years. He built the World’s Fastest Panhead in 2007 and is currently scheduled to go to Bonneville with maybe the first Streamlined Trike.

He’s built maybe 40 choppers, written six books, edited Easyriders and Hot Bike magazines, raced a ’52 Lincoln across Mexico. Oh, the bastard did three tours in Vietnam and spent time on the USS Maddox, which expanded the conflict.

He starred in a movie, “Born to Ride” helped Jesse James and the Biker Build-offs become famous, started magazines and published magazines. He ran into a deer in Wyoming in 2001 and continued to ride to the rally annually until he was 68. He’s run one of the first internet motorcycle web sites, Bikernet.com. Been at it as the editor, publisher and janitor, for 27 years.

He traveled around the world with his 80-year-old mom on a tramp freighter, was featured in the 50th episode of Monster Garage. Hell, he helped Scott Jacobs launch his career by featuring him in VQ magazine.

So, why the hell would you read his books?

WHY IS TUPPERWARE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS?

Tupperware Brands (TUP) shares plunged to their all-time low as the maker of food storage containers blamed “challenging internal and external business economics” combined with higher levels and costs of borrowing.

All their products come from Fossil Fuels. Could there be a connection? Are they being banned or bullied?

NEW YORK STATE ABATE ANNOUNCEMENT

We finally have some good news. We have been working with Legislator Leslie Kennedy and Legislator Anthony Piccirillo for “A Local Law To Provide Parking For Motorcycles at County Facilities”. On April 4, 2023, Resolution 1247-2023 was finally, unanimously passed.

This will Allow Motorcycles to Park in Spots Designated for Clean Pass Vehicles. The Legislature has recognized that New York State has over 360,000 registered motorcycles, found and determined that motorcycles are actually some of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road and that even the least fuel-efficient motorcycles are more likely more economical to operate than a regular car.

The Legislature further determined that Suffolk County adopt this forward-looking policy at County-owned and operated facilities.

This was Long Island ABATE’s first piece of Legislation that we initiated, helped write, supported and had passed. It is a true VICTORY for motorcyclists in Suffolk County.

Once we receive the bill signed by County Executive Steven Bellone we will be doing our research for Nassau County and seeing if we can do this across the entire Island and then State of New York.

We have work ahead of us but we never gave up in Suffolk and even though it took over a year to get it completed……..We Did It!!!!

Looking forward to the next steps.

Stay Safe,
–Deborah Stondell

TWO siblings dead in “explosion of fire” blamed on an e-bike battery in New York City

A boy and his teenage sister died in a New York City fire sparked by an e-bike battery on Monday, officials said.

There have already been 59 fires in New York City this year started by lithium-ion batteries, a Fire Department of New York spokesman said. Last year there were 220 over the course of the entire year.

Tuesday’s blaze started on the first floor of a building in the Queens borough, FDNY Chief of Department John Hodgens said. An e-bike was charging in the vestibule when flames shot up the stairs to a second floor apartment.

A dad and his five kids were inside, officials said. Four of them jumped to safety, but a 7-year-old boy and a 19-year-old girl didn’t make it out.

BIDEN’S FULL COURT PRESS ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES–

Media reports have surfaced regarding a planned announcement by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designed to ensure that all-electric cars make up as much as 67 percent of new passenger vehicles sold in the country by 2032.

According to the New York Times, “The proposed rule would not mandate that electric vehicles make up a certain number or percentage of sales. Instead, it would require that automakers make sure the total number of vehicles they sell each year did not exceed a certain emissions limit. That limit would be so strict that it would force carmakers to ensure that two thirds of the vehicles they sold were all-electric by 2032.”

In 2021 roughly 6% of vehicles sold were electric. Increasing that percentage by a multiple of 10 in less than a decade presents numerous challenges. Sourcing the materials to make the batteries, building an adequate number of charging stations and ensuring the electrical grid is safe and secure to meet the increased demands are all major issues.

This potential EPA announcement comes as states around the nation are tackling the issues very differently. While California has been at the forefront of the attacks on combustion engines, other states have sought to protect such engines. This week lawmakers in Wisconsin held hearings on legislation that would protect the combustion engine. The legislative analysis of Wisconsin S.B. 212/ A.B. 142 states, “Under this bill, no state agency and no local governmental unit may restrict the use or sale of motor vehicles based on the energy source used to power the motor vehicle, including use for propulsion or use for powering other functions of the motor vehicle.”

The federal government is also split on the issue. While the Biden Administration is pushing for increased sales of electric vehicles, Republicans in Congress last month introduced H.R. 1435 the “Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act,” that would amend the Clean Air Act to prevent the elimination of the sale of internal combustion engines.

The MRF’s 2023 legislative agenda states the MRF will, “Work to ensure the survival of internal combustion engines,” to do that we will keep you posted on this situation as it develops and seek your help with an upcoming call to action.

TOP 10 upcoming bikes in India 2023

Made-in-India Harley-Davidson motorcycle
Design inspired by the XR1200 roadster, the Made-in-India Harley-Davidson motorcycle will come equipped with wide handlebars, a circular LED headlamp, and an upside-down front fork. Likely to launch soon, we expect the upcoming Harley-Davidson bike to be priced aggressively under Rs 3 lakh in the Indian market.

Enfield 350cc engine
Std Bullet is the only bike to be powered by the old 350cc engine since the new J Platform was introduced. The new engine made its debut on the Meteor 350 and went on to power the Classic 350 and Hunter 350. It is finally time for the Bullet to get its update and that appears to be on the cards.

Bajaj-Triumph partnership
Bajaj-Triumph partnership is getting ready to debut their bikes. They are likely to debut by the end of the year, with India as one of the first markets to get them. The new bike will go directly up against the Royal Enfield bikes

Bajaj takes over Triumph showrooms; affordable Scrambler launch soon
  • Bajaj officially takes over Triumph India operations
  • Bajaj will run 15 Triumph showrooms
  • First bike launch later this year
If you recall, Harley-Daivdson left India operations overnight and then sold the exclusive rights to sell and service Harley-Davidson in India to Hero Motocorp which is among the highest selling motorcycle company in the world.

Now Bajaj has finally taken over the Triumph showrooms and its operations in India. The Pune-based manufacturer will now manage a total of 15 Triumph showrooms.

This development is a part of new motorcycle launches by this partnership. In 2020, these brands joined hands to co-develop and manufacture entry-level Triumph motorcycles. As a part of this deal, Triumph will co-develop multiple bikes with Bajaj, and the latter brand will manufacture these bikes at their Chakan plant, sell them in India, and export them to markets where Triumph does business.

Bajaj will launch the first range of bikes from this partnership in India later this year. Currently, two bikes have been spotted testing – a scrambler and the other a modern retro motorcycle. Bajaj is likely to launch both these bikes later this year, which are expected to displace 400cc.

The aim is for the brand to acquire additional market share in this growing “premium” space through its affordable pricing on a global sclae.

So again, volume sales are being chased instead of maintaining brand integrity and loyalty to customers and fans.

It’s a motorcycle, not sliced bread, to require sales in million units per month.

First comes a poor man’s Harley and then a poor man’s Triumph.

You Need to Know Your Rights —

I’m working with the MRF and some automotive groups to form a coalition and ultimately write a Scientific Transparency resolution to be submitted before Congress to request an open hearing on free speech and open debate. All we are asking for is the truth.

If you know of an organization willing to support this effort, small or large, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

–Bandit
Kball945@gmail.com

Here’s the really, truly odd aspect to this issue. Look what this is doing to kids all over the globe. They can no longer look forward to riding motorcycles, driving their first car, building a go-kart, travel, wearing fossil fuel based clothes or products, learning to be a chef with a gas stove, sailing around the world, you name it. Can you imagine the confusion in their minds? Don’t you think they deserve open debate and the truth.

And where does that put the young man who wants to build his first custom motorcycle or the young girl who wants to compete in motocross.

One more strange thought: When congress asks for experts to come forward, only deniers step up. The others refuse, why? If they are right and correct about their assumptions, they should be proud to step forward and make their case. Makes you wonder who are the real deniers?

IS THERE A HARLEY SHAKE-OUT–Harley-Davidson CFO to step down

Motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson Inc (HOG.N) said on Wednesday Chief Financial Officer Gina Goetter was leaving the company at the end of April, and toymaker Hasbro Inc (HAS.O) said she would take over as its finance chief.

Harley issued a statement saying that Vice President, Treasurer David Viney will serve as interim CFO after Goetter’s departure on April 28.

Shares of the company were down 2.8% in extended trading after falling more than 6% on Wednesday.

Goetter was appointed CFO in September 2020 and played an integral role in Harley’s restructuring plan, called “Rewire,” to phase out less popular bike models and simplify its business strategy by catering to an older customer base.

Before joining Harley, Goetter held top finance roles at meat company Tyson Foods Inc (TSN.N) and cereal maker General Mills Inc. (GIS.N)

The company did not respond to a request for additional information.

KEEPING THE BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY WIDE OPEN–

There was an elderly couple who in their old age noticed that they were getting a lot more forgetful, so they decided to go to the doctor. The doctor told them that they should start writing things down so they don’t forget.

They went home and the old lady told her husband to get her a bowl of ice cream. “You might want to write it down,” she said.

The husband said, “No, I can remember that you want a bowl of ice cream.”

She then told her husband she wanted a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream. “Write it down,” she told him, and again he said, “No, no, I can remember: you want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream.”

Then the old lady said she wants a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top. “Write it down,” she told her husband and again he said, “No, I got it. You want a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top.” So he goes to get the ice cream and spends an unusually long time in the kitchen, over 30 minutes. He comes out to his wife and hands her a plate of eggs and bacon.

The wife stares at the plate for a moment, then looks at her husband and asks, “Where’s the toast?”

LETTER TO TEACHERS CONFERENCE

Children should be taught how to think, NOT what to think

As we reported in our last message to you, the CO2 Coalition was removed from our purchased booth at the NSTA’s National Conference on Science Education. If you did not see our last newsletter and you are just learning of this, we were thrown out for publicizing their anti-science position on the teaching of climate change.

CO2 Coalition Director, and Education Committee Chair, Gordon Fulks, Ph.D., succinctly penned this letter to the National Science Teaching Association Leadership: Dr. Erika Shugart, Executive Director; Dr. Eric Pyle, Retiring President; Dr. Elizabeth Mulkerrin, President; and Dr. Julie Luft, President-elect National Science Teaching Association, Arlington, VA, USA

Dear Drs. Shugart, Pyle, Mulkerrin and Luft:

I am the author of most of the CO2 Coalition’s publications that your Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Ryan Foley, demanded we cease distributing at your conference in Atlanta last month. My question is simple: WHY? We paid for the exhibitor space that we utilized and were welcomed by many of your members.

What was so egregious about “Once Upon a Time,” “Simon: The Solar-Powered Cat,” and “The Magic Mirror” to justify such an intolerant response?

These stories were written by a Ph.D. astrophysicist, namely someone with the credentials to tackle such tasks. They are beautifully illustrated by a world-class Brazilian artist who lives near the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere, Sao Paulo.

The stories were produced by a remarkable team of real scientists, most with Ph.D.s. Mr. Foley met some of our team, including Dr. Rafaella Nascimento, a Brazilian with a Ph.D. in Chemistry who runs her own business in Houston. And Mr. Foley talked with Dr. Sharon Camp, a Ph.D. Chemist who taught advanced chemistry in Atlanta high schools for many years. Both are volunteers.

Mr. Foley ordered the Executive Director of the CO2 Coalition, Gregory Wrightstone, a man with a Master of Science in geology, to leave the building. When Mr. Wrightstone tried to explain that we were merely supporting the Scientific Method by emphasizing evidence over doctrine, Mr. Foley was adamant that our people had to leave.

Perhaps Mr. Foley was unhappy that we were also distributing a detailed scientific explanation of why we disagree with the National Science Teaching Association’s policy supporting climate hysteria. Science is never about policy statements from organizations. It is about dialogue between properly credentialed scientists who can critique the available evidence. Amateurs can play a role, but only if they are sufficiently knowledgeable.

I was surprised to learn that Mr. Ryan Foley has no academic background in the sciences or in education, meaning that he should not be involved in passing judgments on real scientists with strong credentials.

Does he have ANY understanding that the Scientific Method dates from the 1660s, when the newly formed British Royal Society took as its motto “Nullius in verba,” meaning “Take nobody’s word for it?” That expressed the determination of the Fellows to avoid the domination of authority and to make decisions based on facts derived from experiments.

This is the very foundation of science that all school children should understand and appreciate.

I am the Chairman of our Education Committee that edits and approves all the materials that we publish for children. All of our committee members have backgrounds in science, except for one who is an emeritus professor of economics. Most have Ph.D.s, two are members of the US National Academy of Sciences, several are Fellows of multiple scientific societies. One has been nominated for a Nobel Prize. Most are volunteers, and some are even donors.

This is not to say that we are necessarily correct about everything. But it does say that we have far better qualifications to address scientific topics than someone without a scientific background.

If Mr. Foley had any legitimate reason to question the publications we were distributing, he should have called in real scientists with real expertise to engage us in a constructive dialogue that would have set a good example for the teachers at your conference. They were overwhelmingly supportive of our efforts to return the discussion of climate to something scientific.

Science thrives on constructive debate but dies when non-scientists try to impose their political beliefs.

At the very least, you owe us a public apology for the bad behavior of one of your executives. You should redirect your efforts toward teaching children how to think like a scientist, NOT what to think.

Children (and their teachers) need to learn how science really works. It is evidence-based, NOT politically or religiously based. It has everything to do with consensus, in the sense that every scientific advance has come from a real scientist challenging “the consensus.” Galileo challenged the religious notion that there were only seven wanderers in the sky from which we get the seven days of the week. He observed some of the moons of Jupiter through his telescope.

We need to teach children to challenge paradigms that simply do not stand up to scrutiny.

Thank you for giving this matter your attention.

Sincerely yours,

Gordon J. Fulks, (Ph.D. Physics, University of Chicago)
Chairman, Education Committee
Member, Board of Directors
CO2 Coalition
Arlington, VA USA

P.S. The CO2 Coalition is a nonprofit organization consisting of about 125 accomplished scientists and experts who donate their time to support competent science. The Chairman of our Board is the famous Princeton University Professor of Physics Will Happer.

Metzeler Appointed as the Official Tire of the Isle of Man TT

Metzeler Will be the Sole Official Tire of the Most Iconic Motorcycle Road Race Until 2027

The Metzeler tire brand has been selected by the Department for Enterprise of the Isle of Man as Official Tire with a sponsorship contract for the TT Races for the five-year period 2023-2027.

Paul Phillips, Head of Motorsport – Isle of Man Department for Enterprise

“Metzeler are a welcome addition to the line-up of official sponsoring brands for this year’s Isle of Man TT Races. Our commercial objective is to work collaboratively with our Official partners to add value to the TT experience for everyone involved in the event. Metzeler is already integrally associated with the TT and is the tire of choice for many teams competing in the event, with a proven performance track record. We are sure that this will be a successful partnership that will grow in strength over the years to come.”

Francesco Pietrangeli, Motorcycle Marketing Director Metzeler brand

“The Isle of Man TT is one of the oldest and best known motorcycle races in the world and has a unique and timeless appeal. Metzeler tires have been involved in Road Racing for some time and over the years have contributed to the successes of many riders by supporting them and making our RACETEC RR tires available to them. We are very delighted with the agreement which represents the natural evolution of our commitment to Road Racing and it is also the best way to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the birth of our brand”.

The Tourist Trophy has been run since 1907 on the road circuit of the Snaefell Mountain Course, a 60.720 km track on the Isle of Man. Over the years it has become an iconic competition characterized by charm, tradition, glory, passion and adrenaline, values also shared by those choosing Metzeler tires, a brand that boasts a history of over a century and a half full of motorsport successes and technology.

The Metzeler RACETEC RR tires already used by the riders have been developed thanks to Metzeler’s experience in Road Racing competitions which, as is known, do not take place on circuits but on roads which are open to the public throughout the year and where all the situations that any motorcyclist may have to face on a daily basis can be found. And it is precisely for this reason that road racing has always been the testing and development ground for Metzeler tires. Thanks to its participation in Road Racing activities and to the acquired know-how, Metzeler tire range has enriched by giving life to successful tires, including the sporty SPORTEC M9 RR.

OKAY—Hang on for stuff happening this week. “Our package with the two T-shirts arrived today, thanks.” We shipped a couple of Hal Robinson T-shirts to Belgium. It cost more in shipping than the T-shirts.

I contacted Competition Distributing and ordered 1913 motormount fasteners. They may have some cranks laying around for the 1913. They didn’t have a1913-’14 twin engine hanging out.

I made contact with Glen Bator, antique auctions. The search for the ’13 continues.

I struggled to order sprockets for the Knuck 5-Speed transmission which is ’80-’84. I couldn’t find an offset sprocket, so perhaps they aren’t made.

I spoke to Tyler from Lowbrow about orange and black striped grips. They are too cool, but unfortunately discontinued. I asked about a private run. Still working on that.

The Gearhead from San Pedro reached out with this photo of Scarlet and a piece of his strange fiction. It’s coming, hang on.

He sent me this massive bowie knife and I reached out to Howard Knight to see about possibly adding some engraving.

Working closely with Irish Rich on my 4 case, 5-speed transmission. I dug into boxes and lockers and believe I’m close. You’ll see the next VL, XA, FL-5 story in the next couple of days.

I’m about to tack-well the bracket on the frame. Just got to figure out the angle. I bought this used on ebay.

I need to turn myself into the Deadwood City Hall tomorrow for questioning. You’ll see the report in the near future.

Part 3: Cabana Dan’s Early Projects

Dan doesn’t stop. He’s hitting events, building bikes, working with the Sturgis Museum and looking for vintage parts constantly. Plus, he studies the history of the bikes he’s building.

In this episode between blizzards in the outlaw hills east of Sturgis, SD, we cover the final paint for Dan’s 1914 twin.

Dan’s rebuilding the engine right now, while Tim Peterson of the Amazing Flat Earth Art Studio, in Spearfish, SD is handling final pinstriping.

Let’s back up to the Silent Gray Fellow base coats and clear coats for this project. The base paint work was handled by John from Lophat Customs in Keystone. “It’s a top-secret formula for the color,” said Dan. “I got the color from an old-timer in Milwaukee.”

If you like this color, Dan will share the formula.

As you can see most of the components are painted gray. Originally, they were sprayed with a heavy oil-based enamel. Over the years the process and the chemicals have changed from good to bad to much better with today’s acrylic enamels and amazing clear coats.

Note the rear brake drum. Harley was beginning to shift from a bicycle/cam based internal brake to an interior band, which didn’t last long. The bicycle-based brake was a mechanical challenge against the increased motorcycle horse power. Plus, there was a heat issue. Then they tested the exterior band over the drum, which had other issues. There weren’t a lot of paved roads at the time and dirt and debris could stop brakes from working. Hell, what about water, rain and mud.

It wasn’t until the ‘20s that they figured out the dual internal shoe, the cam and proper leverage to force them against the drum. I figured the rigors of WWI made the leading-shoe system critical.

Here’s where another restoration controversy rears its bizarre and historic head. Dan pointed out that if you lined up a dozen restored Silent Gray fellows, the colors of gray would vary widely. His gray seems rich to me and deep with a coat of clear.

There’s even more controversy stirred into the restoration pot. For instance, the factory took a restored 1914 out of the museum and freshened it up. Unfortunately, the painter pinstriped it with 1913 art guidelines. The pinstriping was slightly different from year to year. Of course, that meant that guys all over the country were following the factory restoration, and it was wrong.

The factory also installed the wrong neck patent decal. It should have been the oakleaf design on a ’13 and early ‘14s. A problem surfaced.

There are a myriad of similar issues including the fork cups. One year they were plated and the next machined. One year with a smooth exterior and the next with a step in the lip for a dust cover.

Up until 1916 the rectangular foot boards were made and the rubber pads glued, not riveted. Again, if you’re restoring a bike like Dan is doing and want it right, watch out. Dan bought footboards but had to weld and cover the rivet holes.

He made his axle nuts with hex stock, also center-stand nuts. He found the stock and the taps on eBay.

Okay, so up to ’13 the pinstriping was silver and red. Then in ’14 they shifted to gold and red. Check your decals.

We drove over to Tim’s art studio in Spearfish, and I noticed his chopper parked right next to his paint bench. It wasn’t fancy or a complete custom, but it contained a cool flair and terrific lines. I complimented Tim on his scooter and the bike’s history came to light. He’s owned it since it was new.

Tim attended the rally on this Shovelhead for 41 years. He hasn’t missed a year of having his bike parked on Main in Sturgis and he has the proof with 41 hash marks stripped on his frame.

Unfortunately, he broke down last year on the way into town, just off exit 17. His bike wouldn’t start and he returned home. It took him a week to figure out he had a collapsed lifter and correct it. I have always like solids…

“I like painting and striping bikes, much more that creating signage,” Tim said while taping Dan’s tanks. Unfortunately, Tim is the go-to guy for quality signage in Sturgis and Deadwood.

Many of his signs are amazing works of art, and he has the quality, abilities, products and finishes to make them last through the next blizzard or heat wave. When you see a knockout sign in Deadwood or at the Rally in Sturgis, it must be Tim’s work.

Tim’s retired from installing signs above the second floor on old buildings after he almost fell off his ladder during a Deadwood gunfight acted out on the historic streets. No more…

I need to point out two things. First, in the early days of Harley-Davidson the crew was scrambling to build and supply motorcycles. The notion that these bikes would be sought after and restored to exact replicas 100 or more years later was way down on their list of priorities. Hell, WWI was about to kick off. So, to say there’s an absolute perfect restoration, that’s tough. For instance, the handlebars were hand bent in the factory. They were all different.

And if you’re in the market for a collectible today, the industry is expanding like mad, with remanufactured parts. Some are way more precision than the originals. We will take you through the process here, which should help with a purchase or my own project down the road. Fortunately, Dan is very open about his bike builds and experiences with products.

I’m getting to tag along and learn.

Norton Opens First Flagship Showroom

Norton Opens First Flagship Showroom At The Bike Shed London

Five additional United Kingdom locations will comprise the brand’s early distribution network.

with inputs by Dustin Wheelen from https://www.rideapart.com

Indian automotive giant TVS had acquired Norton Motorcycles in April 2020 after a tumultuous period in the OEM’s history. However, since then this legendary British brand has kept its head down, opening its Solihull factory, hiring a new CEO, and receiving a £100M British Pounds Sterling (~$125M USD) investment in two years’ time.

In October, 2022, Norton started rolling out its 2023 Commando 961. With a firm eager to get its products into riders’ hands, Norton opens its first retail location within London’s The Bike Shed.

“Seeing the Norton brand move from within the four walls of Norton HQ and out into the marketplace is positive on a number of levels,” claimed Norton Chief Commercial Officer Christian Gladwell. “More dealers mean more riders enjoying the results of the hard work and dedication that the entire team at Norton has contributed towards.”

Known as Norton Atelier, this space will showcase Norton’s V4SV superbike alongside the Commando 961. Customers can purchase and/or test ride both models at the Shoreditch Bike Shed chapter.

Norton apparel designed by Savile Row fashion designer Nick Tentis is also available at the new showroom. Tentis’ has also influenced this retail space itself.

“For the first one I wanted to create a space reflecting the history and values of the Norton brand while also creating the perfect environment to display the new clothing collection,” explained Tentis.

Norton will also establish showrooms at Krazy Horse London, Crawley’s P&H Motorcycles, Sheffield’s Via Moto, Bodmin’s Thor Motorcycles, and Cheshire’s Oakmere Motor Group. These locations will offer test rides, maintenance, and parts and accessories.

We can’t wait for this epic brand to expand their global footprint. Let’s hope it does not become a fancy apparel brand like Deus Ex Machina and sells more motorcycles than jackets & tees.
