WAR TIMES BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for March 28, 2024
By Bandit |
Hey,
We are living in strange times. Take a look at history and the weird shit impacting humanity, like wars. We are right there again and most folks go about their days, ho hum. Some brave souls are sounding the alarm, like Bob Kay with the IMA, Chris Callen of Cycle Source, Marc Morano at Cfact and Climate Depot and Greg Wrightstone of the CO2 Coalition. There are more and the numbers are growing.
It’s a war, but mostly of words and incarceration. If you don’t agree, you get arrested. The actions of the folks who want the war and destruction include open borders to control elections, killing our kids with fentanyl, ruining cities with crime and homelessness and punishing you because of your SUVs or motorcycles. The best recent historic example of this was right after WWII when the threat of communism caused a guy named Senator McCarthy to attempt to destroy free speech and jail anyone who muttered the word communism. Google it, look it up on Wikipedia.
Let’s see what’s in the news.
The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.
BREAKING NEWS–SEMA Advocacy Leads to EPA Delaying Most Aggressive Tailpipe Emissions Benchmarks.
After advocacy from the automotive community, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is delaying its most aggressive tailpipe emissions reduction requirements from model year 2027 to model year 2030. The EPA’s final rule also slightly increased the average tailpipe emissions for light-duty vehicles, increasing the standard to 85 grams/mile from 82 grams/mile for model year 2032.
While the agency’s final rulemaking provides automakers with additional time to ramp up production of zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs), currently, only electric vehicles (EVs) and five plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) meet the easier 85 grams/mile standard. It is estimated that 67% of new vehicles sold would have to be EVs by 2032 to meet this standard. Automakers could also comply with the final rule if EVs account for 56% of new vehicle sales and PHEVs comprise 13% of model year 2032 sales. The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) opposes the EPA’s final standards for model year 2027 to 2032 light and medium-duty vehicles, which ultimately still forces automakers to sell EVs and PHEVs to comply with this rulemaking and further limits internal combustion engine technology options.

A RUSH OF 100-WORD FICTION SUBMISSIONS–QUIG
I took the first Piedmont exit off I-90, rolling the Chieftain onto the parking lot of Matt’s Place, the front tire of the classic facing the interstate. The t-shirts stapled to the wall said Matt wasn’t there, he was fishing.
Silently, I tipped my champagne of beers to the Blackhills and whispered to my friend that I missed him. It’s been four years now since he left, yet I still hear his voice, his laugh and wish I could cast a fly like he could.
Time goes by, the days slip away fast, the best leave us first. Enjoy Miller time.

POWERSPORTS BUSINESSES SPEAK OUT–Powersports Businesses Large and Small Asked to Speak Out in Washington
“On behalf of the MIC Board, I want to encourage everyone to join us at the Capitol Hill Fly-In, April 29-30, to help make our voices heard in Washington,” said MIC Chair Derek Brooks, Motorcycle Product Line Manager of Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. “We will be speaking with lawmakers about key policy issues facing powersports including protecting and expanding OHV access, taking a reasonable approach to PFAS legislation, and pushing for an end to tariffs on crucial powersports parts and products from China.”
The Fly-In is not just for senior OEM executives. Dealers, distributors, retailers, insurance companies, and allied services attend. Meetings and receptions provide valuable opportunities to network and discuss powersports priorities, and for industry peers to get to know each other better.

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM UPDATE— Honor the ride, build the legacy.
A pilgrimage to Sturgis isn’t complete without a visit to the iconic Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.
The tight, small museum staff with a ton of projects on hand are also working hard to produce an annual magazine in conjunction with the city of Sturgis.
They’re not cranking out any ordinary mag, but a resource guide to help any traveller who comes to the Black Hills. The response has been fantastic and we have expanded the size of the magazine twice and it could receive an additional 16 pages. Hang on.
Scott Jacobs turned in his magnificent tribute to Hillclimb motorcycles art piece for the cover yesterday. This weekend, I will write the story behind the inception of this piece with the help of Dale Walksler R.I.P. and the Wheels Through Time Museum.
We are reworking the Museum Website with several additions including fund raising forms and news columns. Each bike and display image will contain a description and include fresh new photography.
Here’s our second museum expansion concept drawing from Daniel James. Very cool, but we have one more to go before we meet with the city of Sturgis and discuss our options.
Speaking of the City, members of the Museum board will soon attend a meeting with the city leaders.
The town of Sturgis is voting on the AFT race series to take place the last weekend of the Rally April 9th. There’s a lot of buzz going around about it.
We will be selling individual copies of the magazine through the web site and every business in Sturgis, Spearfish, Deadwood and Whitewood will received a copy and the opportunity to buy more.
It’s never dull around the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.
Whether you’re a seasoned rider, a history enthusiast, or simply curious, a visit to Sturgis Motorcycle Museum at 999 Main Street, Sturgis, SD 57785, promises an enriching experience.

NEWS FROM THE MASTER OF LIGHT–Artist David Uhl
David recently completed a new piece for Harley-Davidson. Prints were used as the awards for the Motor Company’s Bar and Shield awards for top performing dealerships.
We are pleased to announce that David will be offering 6 (that’s correct, only 6!) special hand-embellished versions. Definitely a first come-first served scenario on this one!
“Bobber Blasphemy”
In David’s words, “I was contacted by the Motor Company a while back to produce a work of art to be used as an award for exemplary Dealers. The program is called the “Bar & Shield award”. The winning dealers would receive a framed canvas print. My initial thought was to speak to the extensive history of the Dealer Network.
Since I love the Knuck/Panhead era most I decided to feature that era of bike. This oil painting depicts an early American Harley dealer reacting after seeing a trio of motorcycles he had sold, only returning with a whole lotta missing parts!”
David will take the canvas color proofs and paint over them, creating 6 unique pieces. With these, he includes a special letter to the recipient (in his really cool calligraphy handwriting).
Please let me know ASAP if you’d like to reserve one of the six. You can respond to this email or call me at 303-913-4840.
Thanks,

MORE ON THE CO2 COALITION–
But the hidden power of the CO2 Coalition resides in our large number of active members who publish, present, and speak to advance our message.
This year, our membership has increased to more than 150 distinguished colleagues. We have added 33 new members so far in 2023, including these notable individuals:
•Dr. John Clauser, Ph.D., was recently added to the CO2 Coalition’s Board of Directors. He is the recipient of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics. In a recent lecture to a Korean conference on Quantum Mechanics he stated that “the IPCC is one of the worst sources of dangerous misinformation … I believe that climate change is not a crisis.”
•Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Stafford – Gen. Stafford is best recognized for his efforts in space, having piloted numerous missions, including Gemini 6A and 9A. He was commander of Apollo 10 and Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. His proudest achievement is initiating and leading the American stealth program that culminated in development of the Advanced Tactical Fighter and the F-22A Stealth Fighter.
These and our other distinguished members provide scientific input and have proved invaluable in helping to create our commentaries, educational initiatives and publications.
Our members are like a small army of unpaid staff working tirelessly to advance our message. They are a force multiplier allowing us to punch well above our weight class.
When we receive an op-ed, we run it through our editorial process and then find a top-rated site to publish it.
These online sites have included Real Clear Energy, Washington Times, American Thinker, Washington Examiner and many more. After publication, our commentaries are shared widely on websites and newsletters of our allies in the cause.
The commentaries, interviews, publications, and op-eds have put our message before more than an estimated 20 million people this past year. And with your continued support, I believe this number will grow in 2024.
STURGIS MUSEUM EXPERIENCE–
Keith Ball’s Assalt Weapon, Sturgis, South Dakota
While exploring the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum, Hall of Fame & Gift Shop, I got to meet Keith “Bandit” Ball whose motorcycle, Assalt Weapon, set a record of 160 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats races in 2007.
Keith’s bike, on loan to the museum, was being transported to Alabama to be worked on in preparation for this year’s Bonneville race and the process of moving this one-of-a-kind motorcycle was quite something to watch.
“Keith Ball grew up in Long Beach, CA, and has since travelled the world with the Navy and has worked as an editor and publisher for various big-time motorcycle magazines and publications. Keith has also written various novels, been featured in movies, TV shows, and has received many awards for his talents. In 2006 he was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame, and shortly after set two motorcycle land speed records.”

CALL TO ACTION–U.S. Senate Bill S. 3094
Wednesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its final rule on tailpipe emissions. The plan calls for greenhouse gas emissions limits for the 2027 through 2032 model years for passenger vehicles. The original plan would have required 67% of new light-duty car and truck sales to be electric by 2032. After pushback from numerous groups, hybrids became included in the calculations and targets were slightly lowered. Nevertheless, over 50% of cars for sale in less than a decade, will need to be electric.
Last year the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Choice in Automobile Retail Sales (CARS) Act with bipartisan support. The vote was 221-197. The bill prevents the EPA from enacting these rules, thereby protecting the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE).
Unfortunately, the Senate refuses to act. Only 37 U.S Senators are currently supporting the companion bill, S. 3094. If you care about preserving the Internal Combustion Engine, now is the time to act.
Tell your Senators to push back against the mandate for electric vehicles. Click the Call To Action button below! Add your voice to those that want to defend our lifestyle.
There is speculation that new bills will be introduced to protect the Internal Combustion Engine but we must keep up the pressure!

AHEAD OF MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS PERIOD—
- MassDOT Reminds All Motorists Roadway Safety Is a Shared Responsibility
- Operators urged to wear visible clothing, obey speed limits
- Vehicle drivers reminded to “look twice” when changing lanes and turning
- Statistics show 58 motorcycle operator deaths in Massachusetts in 2023
“Safety must be a priority for everyone, but especially for vulnerable road users like motorcyclists,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt. “We know with the warmer weather ahead, more motorcyclists will be on the roads and the operators and other drivers around them have a duty to stay alert and be mindful of all traffic laws designed to keep everyone safe.”
“As part of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Period, the RMV reminds all motorists that safety demands an effort from vehicle operators and motorcyclists alike,”said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Colleen Ogilvie. “All motorcyclists need to be properly educated and licensed, regardless of how experienced they are in operating other vehicle types. Wearing protective gear and bright, visible clothing is also very important and should be used at all times, regardless of the duration of your trip and the roadway conditions.”
Data on MassDOT’s crash data portal,IMPACT, shows there were 58 motorcycle operator fatalities across Massachusetts in the year 2023. Additionally, there were three motorcycle passenger fatalities. Motorists and other members of the public are encouraged to access the interactive data portal, to see where different types of crash incidents have taken place and how the data compares from year to year.
Motorcyclists face an increased risk of severe injury and death when crashes occur. The two most common roadway fatality crashes are single-vehicle crashes that involve a motorcycle driver failing to negotiate a curve in the road, and crashes involving a left-turning vehicle striking a motorcycle.
Motorcyclists are encouraged to be prepared and participate in educational training courses that are offered through the state-sponsored Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP). The program seeks to increase rider skills and safety on the road by providing quality rider education and training to both novice and experienced motorcycle riders. The program is specifically designed to assist riders of all levels and to promote the safe operation of motorcycles.
Waiver courses include Basic Rider Course, Basic Rider Course 2, Returning Rider – Basic Rider Course, and 3 Wheel – Basic Rider Course. MREP also offers additional non-licensing courses for motorcyclists that already have their motorcycle license.

HISTORY LESSON FROM COMPETITION DISTRIBUTING–Maldwyn Jones & his Merkel Jefferson racer.
Jones was a phenomenal racer and engineer who started working for the Merkel company at a young age. He stood out front of the factory asking Joe Merkel for a racer position. Merkel told him no but gave him a job in the repair department.
Maldwyn loved racing and would work on his own racers crafted with leftover “junk” in the basement of the factory. He stated Joe Merkel knew what he was doing but never came to inspect. He would ask Joe to race for the moco but he would not support Maldwyn.
Jones finally quit the company with the lack of support and went on to race 100 miler in Dayton Ohio on a Thor of his friends. Joe Merkel kid with other employees he would not finish let alone compete. Well, Joe ended up leaving after Maldwyn won three of the 4 races that weekend.
They hired Maldwyn back that next week and it took Mr. Merkel some time to swallow his pride before he would speak to Maldwyn again. The bike in the picture above was crafted by Maldwyn using a Jefferson overhead valve head and a cutoff Merkel cylinder.
He did not have to work in the basement again…

HARLEY-DAVIDSON LiveWire launches first electric cruiser motorcycle– S2 Mulholland
LiveWire, the all-electric motorcycle company spun out of Harley-Davidson’s electric motorcycle division, has just unveiled its latest electric motorcycle. The new LiveWire S2 Mulholland is the brand’s first cruiser electric motorcycle, and in fact the first cruiser of any major electric motorcycle maker.
It might not look quite like a typical H-D cruiser. Gone are the chrome pipes and leather bar tassels. Instead, LiveWire is calling the S2 Mulholland a “performance cruiser”, and it’s got the specs to back that up.
A 3.3 second 0-60 mph time adds sportiness to the laidback cruiser geometry with taller bars and a more relaxed-looking ride. The use of a 19-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear also gives the bike a squatter rear end.
There’s no cruiser frame, but that’s because there’s not really a frame at all. Instead, the S2 Mulholland uses the Arrow platform seen on the S2 Del Mar, which is centered around a structural battery that allows for multiple bikes to be built around a similar architecture.

BIKERNET DOCUMENTARY REVIEW OF THE WEEK—Climate the Movie
Climate The Movie: The Cold Truth is now available to view at no cost! Director Martin Durkin and Producer Tom Nelson want to share this far and wide. Please view here — then share the link with everyone!
The film includes interviews with a number of very prominent scientists associated with the CO2 Coalition, including Coalition Chairman Dr. William Happer along with Board members Dr. Patrick Moore (co-founder of Greenpeace) and Dr. John Clauser (2022 Nobel Laureate in Physics). Also included are Coalition members Roy Spencer and Tony Heller.
From CO2 Coalition Member and Producer Tom Nelson’s Substack:
This film exposes the climate alarm as an invented scare without any basis in science. It shows that mainstream studies and official data do not support the claim that we are witnessing an increase in extreme weather events – hurricanes, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires and all the rest. It emphatically counters the claim that current temperatures and levels of atmospheric CO2 are unusually and worryingly high.
On the contrary, it is very clearly the case, as can be seen in all mainstream studies, that, compared to the last half billion years of earth’s history, both current temperatures and CO2 levels are extremely and unusually low. We are currently in an ice age. It also shows that there is no evidence that changing levels of CO2 (it has changed many times) has ever ‘driven’ climate change in the past.

LATEST FROM PAUGHCO–DirtyBiker 2-1 Evo Sportster Exhaust 1986-2003
DirtyBiker X Paughco Exhaust
(PRE-ORDER-ships in 4-8 weeks more details coming soon.)
This is a two piece 2-1 exhaust designed by Josh “DirtyBiker” Sheehan and produced by Paughco. The goal with this version was to create another signature “DirtyBiker” exhaust for the H-D Sportster’s from 1986-2003 in rigid and swingarm frames.
Fits 1986-2003 engines in rigid frames and swingarm frames. With a tip of the hat to Dick Allen and the Alphabet co. It was time for that classic exhaust style to make a comeback. Ironhead’s rule, so does this exhaust. I hope you dig it too.
Here’s what it will fit:
•1986-2003
Here’s what it won’t fit:
•TBD
For rigid applications:
*slider channel on the back side of the front exhaust pipe just below the exhaust collector. Attach to the lower frame rail in front of the axle plate. You can do this one of two ways.
Either weld a mounting tab to the lower frame rail, or use the mounting kit offered by Paughco (possible option coming soon). You might need to modify a tab to fit, but you’re a chopper dude/dudette. I have faith in you!
100% made in house at Paughco. 100% American made. 1000% DirtyBiker shit.
T-bolts are included to use with slider channels welded on exhaust system.

“Well, as a matter of fact, I have,” she said… “I’ve been divorced three times, owned two Chryslers, and voted for Biden.”

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE RACING AND REIGHNING CHAMPION JARED MEES SECURE FIRST VICTORY OF 2024 SEASON AT SENOIA SHORT TRACK
Mees Edges Out the Competition Aboard Indian FTR750, Moving into Third in Overall Standings
Fellow Indian FTR750 Rider Brandon Robinson Rounds out the Podium in Third
Indian Motorcycle Racing had a stellar showing at round three of the 2024 American Flat Track series in Senoia, Georgia, for the Senoia Short Track. It was nine-time champion Jared Mees scoring his first victory of the year aboard his Indian FTR750, moving him into third in the championship. Fellow Indian Motorcycle-supported racer Brandon Robinson rounded out the top three aboard his Indian FTR750 privateer ride.
After a slow start to the season, Mees, the reigning champion, made a strong statement in Senoia that he’s still at the top of his game and the rider to beat. Despite an unwanted starting position, he used it as motivation to rocket his FTR750 off the line when the green flag waved to take over the lead quickly.
Mees was overtaken a short time later but maintained his speed and stayed within striking distance to regain the lead a few laps later. Once out front, Mees didn’t look back throughout the remainder of the 36-lap race, taking the checkered flag and winning by 1.6 seconds.
“This was a solid showing for Jared and the Indian Motorcycle team, securing the win and keeping him within striking distance in the chase for his 10th-career championship,” said Gary Gray, Vice President of Racing & Service for Indian Motorcycle. “Although the weekend didn’t go completely how he’d like, it was important for him to get this win under his belt. There is still a lot of racing left this season, and this victory provide him and his team momentum going next month’s race in Texas.”
“It was a challenging start to the season so to come away with the win tonight is incredible,” said Mees. “I struggled throughout the day and during qualifying so was a little worried but after making some changes to the bike it performed phenomenally in the Main event. Everything I had been wanting it to do all day, finally came to me and it paid off. I can’t thank the Indian team enough for the support.
After three rounds, Mees sits third in the championship chase with 54 points, a mere 10 points off the lead. Currently tied with Scottie Parker with the most career championships, Mees is looking to secure his spot in the history books as the all-time greatest flat track racer with a 2024 championship, earning him 10-career titles. Of his nine-career championships, Mees has five while piloting the Indian FTR750, coming in 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
The 2024 American Flat Track season continues on April 27 for the Texas Half-Mile in Fort Worth, TX.

THE LATEST FROM THE TEMPLE OF INSPIRATION–Decide!
More than anything else, I believe it’s our decisions, not the conditions of our lives that determine our destiny.
“Your life changes the moment you make a new, congruent, and committed decision.”–Tony Robbins
Life is a canvas upon which we paint our attention. As Napoleon Hill wisely stated, “What the Mind can conceive and believe, the Mind will achieve.” Each day presents us with choices, amidst the backdrop of our inner struggles, fears, and challenges. However, the manner in which we navigate these challenges is ultimately our decision.
We possess an innate Power that transcends any obstacle, supported by the Universal Law of cause and effect. Henry Ford succinctly captured this essence: “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Similarly, Buddha emphasized the profound influence of our thoughts on our reality: “What we think, we become.”
It is crucial to monitor our internal dialogue—are our thoughts and conversations uplifting or limiting? Do we dwell on problems or seek out solutions?
“You hold the power to shape your reality,” as Ford suggested.
AND SO IT IS .
Namaste.

STAFF 100-WORD FICTION SUBMISSION–Fuzzy
I swayed left and right, twisting the throttle, pushing and pulling at the handlebars. Tense, I sweat through a hot early morning in June. If only I could ride another 200 miles, I know I would be at peace.
This time yesterday, I kickstarted my journey to the heartland. There were no goodbyes at work, maybe no welcomes at my destination, my home. As I evaded the bustling traffic on the interstate, the many commuters dissolved, my mind picturing her smile, her yellow gown, her rare recipes and most of all, her patience with me.
The oil rig fellas pitched in to do my share, as I took off to a final resting place. Mom’s fading fast. Will she remember me in her condition? I gotta stay awake to fulfill her dreams. I promised to be by her side.

NEVER GIVE UP—I shoot the shit with friends who don’t want to have anything to do with politics, but it’s our country. I know guys who are afraid to get involved. It’s concerning. People are being arrested for stepping up and voicing their opinions, but we can’t give in, ever. I know motorcycle rights groups who don’t want to upset folks who are deliberately trying to destroy the country. Tough call.
Think about it. I’m trying to build a couple of new project bikes when they plan to ban all ICE engines behind lies.
I’m working with companies like Paughco. They have a chrome shop. Europe currently is trying to ban all chrome shops.
I received this Paughco tin primary for an alternator motor. I sliced and diced it to make a primary chain guard. Plans changed and then came together.
Zack in Long Beach got himself a new French Bulldog but some guys in the government want to ban pets. Remember they breathe CO2, shit and piss.
If you order Black bike star hub wheels with newer Timken bearings, Paughco now makes the axle. It’s just slightly different from stock, but different enough to create a serious problem.
Kent Weeks from Lucky Devil Metalworks in Houston is a talented guy and we discussed petcocks and gas caps. If you have this type of gas cap and it’s flush mounted, you can’t fill your dinky tank. It will leak.
Then we kicked around inline petcocks for our dreaded Fossil Fuels. I bought fittings with a 5/16 ID for better flow to the 93-inch S&S engine. I discovered to my dismay many petcocks have less than a 1/4-inch hole through the valve.
I dug around and found this little sleek petcock with a solid ¼-inch hole. Carl Olsen told me it doesn’t matter because of the float bowl capacity. But, but…
But hang on. I have pals who don’t vote. What the fuck? No wonder the government is crumbling.
I’m riding free forever or die trying, goddammit.

Eased the old Shovel to a stop. Pulled into the bar parking lot for a quick beer. A little kid approached, not much more than 5, holding a puppy.
He held out the dog to me, and I took it to give it a couple of pats. I turned and the kid vanished. Not wanting to let the little guy go on a busy city street I tucked him in my vest and headed home. On the way his little head poke out into the breeze.
At home I noticed an injury to the hind quarter. The vet unable to fix, I had to let him go.
At least he got to feel the wind in his face.

You had to ask: Harley-Davidson X440
By Wayfarer |
What motorcycle do you like that everyone seems to hate?
Ujjwal Dey presents his case
Author’s Confession: Originally assigned to write a road test review about the latest localized venture of Harley-Davidson– the reluctant rider and long-time collaborator did not seem to know where to begin or how to present it to a predisposed, unhappy American audience. Well, the product is good and the sales are well…
It is not ugly nor a poor person’s substitute. It is actually a wonderfully designed and ingeniously engineered motorcycle. Moreover, it showcases adaptability for climate and terrain for a motorcycle. Besides, wasn’t Harley-Davidson always meant to be a motorcycle for the working class and not a fancy fashion accessory for some billionaire to park in his 50-acre garage?
The oil-cooled engine is a long-stroke engine that helps with low and mid-range torque. It can beat any 350cc Enfield in power as well as top-speed.

You had to ask: Harley-Davidson X440
By Ujjwal Dey |
Harley-Davidson X440– There I said it and don’t regret admitting it.
The motorcycle is available in three variants and the top one is called X 440 S which only comes in a deep black color. All of them carry only the Harley-Davidson badge and branding. It is built on a tubular trellis frame which packs all the power and performance tightly between your legs. This is the only motorcycle in the segment offering auto-illumination and hazard lights. All LED lights, dual-channel ABS, USB charging, GPS navigation are some other features. Only the top-variant can get you a HOG membership though.
The oil-cooled engine is a long-stroke engine that helps with low and mid-range torque. It can beat any 350cc Enfield in power as well as top-speed.
The most criticized and obviously standout feature of the X440 motorcycle is its off-putting exhaust pipe. It looks bizarre and even cheap but is it? The nation of India follows closely the EU emission norms. Along with that is the noise pollution restrictions. I guess, they made the best possible exhaust pipe that can work with the engine’s purpose as also produce a “firing” that announces the Harley-Davidson on the street. The “thump” mania of Enfield “silencers” have also been dampened by the exact same laws and regulations.
If only, the top variant had more color options, but that would drastically change the variables for the accountants at their factory. The number crunching calculator holders, do hold all production models at ransom—the return on investment and effort—a tangible number that is derived through thinning hair of these mathematical “genus”.
Hence, the perfect, targeted product called Harley-Davidson X440 has been meticulously engineered, designed and marketed with precision. You can test-ride it before rejecting its looks. Once you know what it can do, you will know what you were missing. The catch, they won’t shine on stateside showroom floors.
For those who came in late, Harley-Davidson made an exit from India in October 2020 after ten years of being the most popular “premium” segment motorcycle brand in India. Apparently, they expected to do more than just outsell Triumphs and Polaris Indians. They had hoped a nation of billion people would at least buy a million units of a motorcycle costing more than a Mercedes entry level sedan model in India.
While this nation is the largest producer and consumer of two-wheelers, it is not for the purpose of collecting and customizing that people keep buying this alleged death machine called a motorcycle. We are not weekend riders nor are we people who ride during riding season.
Indians ride all day every day. A motorcycle or a scooter is the preferred vehicle for commute as well as for transport of goods, including commercial or retail goods and restaurant takeouts. One can see an entire family of five on a Honda scooter coming back with groceries from a mall. Everyday, a steady stream of two-wheelers ride to work and back, in-between struggling, haggling and arguing for parking space.
So clearly, Zeitz and his Board of Directors didn’t appreciate the lack of desire for world’s most desired V-Twins in a nation that rides till their butts are as good as horse-hooves. They wrapped up their statistics, numbers that don’t reveal their success and popularity and HOG rides in India—and overnight shutdown their Indian offices, abandoning their dealerships, showrooms and customers.
How does one ever build confidence in a company or a brand that acts in such a reckless, fickle-minded and rash method of business operations? Easy! Why not win over the trust of the most trusted Indian brand in India?
So, Zeitz & Co (because that’s all there is to Harley-Davidson legacy it seems) came up with a plan to make a comeback without coming back!
They franchised the Harley-Davidson badge to Hero MotoCorp, which is the world’s highest selling two-wheeler manufacturer. Originally, they had started as a partner to Honda under the brand Hero-Honda. A few decades ago, with liberalization and foreign direct investment being admitted to Indian coffers—Honda went for a solo seat and Hero decided to continue in its two-wheeler journey by coming up with their own models, designs, marketing and branding.
As recently as January 2024, Hero MotoCorp became the first Indian Factory Team to get a overall podium finish in the iconic Dakar Rally which had some grueling new stages such as ‘marathon’ stage and 48H chrono stage.
https://blog.bikernet.com/hero-motocorp-finally-gets-a-podium-finish-at-dakar-rally/
Alas, in Wonderland
So, clearly, this “Hero” was a survivor, innovator and competitor that suited the needs and ambitions of Harley-Davidson for India market. Volume sales was making Royal Enfield into a global player. Additionally, Bajaj two-wheeler brand of India had equity in global brands such KTM and Husqvarna. TVS produced BMW models in India. TVS also purchased rights to Norton while earlier Mahindra Group grabbed rights to BSA, Jawa and Yezdi. This Indian juggernaut was growing heads, wings and tails—expanding and offering a range of models for all mindsets and purposes of riding, in India and overseas.
BTW—did you know the origin of the word “juggernaut” comes from the Indian mythical God “Jagannatha’s” annual journey in the Holy city of Puri, Orissa in eastern India? “Jagannatha” literally means “Lord of the Universe”, i.e. Vishnu.
Since the Middle Ages, Europeans had been fascinated by accounts of the Ratha Yatra “Temple Chariot procession” at Puri, which claimed that pilgrims threw themselves under the wheels of the temple chariots which carried the idols of the Lord and his siblings. The gigantic chariot, its wheels and components are entirely made of wood and joined without any screws or metals.
The word juggernaut was contrived to refer to a literal or metaphorical force regarded as merciless, destructive, and unstoppable. This English usage originated in the mid-nineteenth century and was the early rendering in English of Jagannath, a very important deity in the Hindu pantheon and mythology of north-east India.
Hero MotoCorp itself probably knew that its homegrown rivals are growing at a brisk pace through technical and financial collaborations. It was a deal made in Heaven when Hero was appointed exclusive distributor for Harley-Davidson in India.
Wall Street and Americans themselves may have been vary of the deals with Hero in India and QJ Motors in China. Yet, the one in India made better noise in media –especially Indian media and that’s what matters to get sales numbers rising.
In China, Harley-Davidson released a 350cc model whereas for India, they decided that they gonna beat Royal Enfield by being neither 350cc nor 750cc (refer the formerly India-specific model called Harley-Davidson Street 750). Enfields were churned out at 350cc and 500cc engine power in fixed rigid designs, branding, sales and service. Then they stopped 500cc to promote their 650cc twin engines. Then suddenly they flooded the market with a dozen models, with multiple variants, having differing features and colors. All out of the V-Twin master’s playbook?
Well, Harley-Davidson decided, their India checkmate model will be 440cc, a weird number that Zeitz pulled out of his helmet.
Worse still, it won’t be a twin-engine, the very iconic emblem of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
Why not reintroduce the Street 750 in an updated model? Well, that shite was buried with COVID dead bodies and Zeitz wanted a new playground in old territory.
Okay, yes, it ain’t as pretty as a Road King or Nightster or Iron48. Well, those are still available for sale at Harley-Daivdson dealerships in India run by Hero MotoCorp. So go grab it if that’s where your heart is. They are still prohibitively expensive, but then so is a Polaris Indian Chief or the Scout or a Triumph Bonneville.
Which is why we have the brainstorming between two giant brands to develop something that satisfies multitudes in the market.
At least its not a hogwash. It turned out to be a well-researched and thoroughly tested motorcycle which became a challenger to not just Royal Enfield, but many other brands within the 350+ segment –locally called under the trade term “middle-weight” motorcycles.
While Harley-Davidson is not known for a single-cylinder engine, they have had single-cylinder models till as recently as the 1970s.
https://youtu.be/aNkNzKcw2Ro?si=7wTO1wmeuCXJL_-M
Neither of the newly engaged business partners rushed to rehash a product of theirs for volume sales under the famous badge. It took three years of partnership to finally announce Harley-Davidson X440 to the world. Pre-bookings were surprisingly higher than expected –the price had suggested a low powered, poorly equipped motorcycle.
All that changed with the launch and media and fans getting to ride and post their reviews, video-logs and comments online.
I have to admit, launched on July 3, 2023, the motorcycle is not yet a common sight on urban roads which ply an Enfield at every end of the street. Once bitten, twice shy.
Buyers here buy for a very long-term. Then they also consider re-sale value. In-between it all, there needs to be assurance and consistency for maintenance, service and parts. All this is not very convincing from the better-half, Harley-Davidson, who upped and flew the cuckoo’s nest called Indian automotive market.
Hero MotoCorp is bearing the brunt of the crucifix, carrying the burden of past Karma of its partner, attempting to develop faith in the born-again brand and deliver a second-coming for its American friend in the improving economy & infrastructure of India.
How does this compete with the rapidly spreading, government-aided gospel of electronic vehicles?
Well, there have been explosions of EV scooters in India and fires on EV cars reported in the past. The EV subsidy was revoked and then re-evaluated. Stricter standards and demands were placed on EV manufacturers. While it is common to see EV two-wheelers and cars on the street, their penetration is solely urban. Why? Well, electricity is as much a privilege here as gasoline.
The nation imports 86% of its crude oil requirement, losing precious foreign exchange for it. Hence the push for sugarcane derived ethanol in petrol and solar power generation. Self-sufficiency is the motto but just as seen in Europe, it might ‘backfire’ and slow or stall the pace of industrial and economic growth of India and its people.
Will petrol and diesel disappear? Will there be a riot? Will all the billions of ICE vehicles in the world be collected and burnt in heaps reminiscent of book-burning mania of the Gestapo?
Hey, live or die, loss is the seemingly eternal feeling we have with possessions and people. Are you a person that cherishes what you buy or are you a modern brat who buys, breaks, throws away and buys again?
Don’t lose your dreams and ambitions! Only lose your cash once! Ride a vehicle that matters to you, that you can visualize riding free forever. The motorcycle offers cashback in terms of thrilling experience and epic memories.
Just as the Chinese made Harley-Davidson X350 was denied sale on American soil, ironically by Harley-Davidson USA, in the very same disembodied spirit, X440 is not allowed to be sold in USA.
While Americans are not allowed access to this vehicle, I believe the rest of Asia and even South America and Africa would love to ride this into new horizons, making record profits in the history of sales charts of nerds at Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Well, they can’t all be square at the top brass, if they made this concept to rock and roll. As for segment leadership—no dice. That’s gonna take a while. Hero MotoCorp is rapidly re-hauling its existing showrooms and service centers to cater to X440 and other possible collaborations including the recently launched Hero Mavrick 440 which uses the same engine and trellis frame as X440.
Slowly but surely, people are getting interested in the X440. There is no widescale advertising and motion picture placement gimmicks. The only way to win over riders is to get them to ride. They need more test-ride vehicles is what I recommend from personal experience.
Will there be a second model from within this price and displacement range by Harley-Davidson? We are eagerly awaiting the next 4th of July hoping pre-bookings for something is announced by Harley-Davidson as the festive seasons starts from late August in India.
Buy it? Reasons? One, for the money’s worth. Two, for the show you will put on. Three, to get ready for your best riding experience for years to come. Now, go, cash it, go!

The winds slapped his body as he kept his head steady, guiding the Fat Boy through backroads, out past county lines. The roads uneven, but the path was known to him. The brothers had brought the fight to the establishment.
The State however considered them a malignant minority. Even as cops and Congressmen thrashed the group with harsh laws and fines, the rider’s outlook was – all for one and one invaluable Constitution.
As they stood their ground, an underground parking lot exploded.
“Outlaws!”
“Scum!”
Age-old slimy propaganda to delude the masses. In a city that banned ICE engines, it was anybody’s guess what had exploded.

Call To Action! S. 3094 (CARS Act)
By Wayfarer |
Call To Action — U.S.
If bikers do not stand up now, will they hear us later?

BAKER DRIVETRAIN HELPS DISABLED BIKERS RIDE AGAIN
By Bandit |
I’m a Below The Knee amputee riding a 2019 Street glide. I’ve had issues riding two wheels I’ve had to overcome in riding style and or by modifying the motorcycle. One of the biggest issues I’ve had is when parking the motorcycle. Pushing backwards on flat surface was a challenge enough with a grip of one foot. Add some sand or incline and you would most likely be asked to help me pick up my motorcycle. Due to this I worried where to park, so I could ride out forward. Not an easy task at an event where there are a ton of bikes all jammed together.
Baker Drivetrain’s reverse kit solves this issue 110%!
F6R GIVES DISABLED RIDERS AND OTHERS A PUSH BACKWARDS
Baker (www.bakerdrivetrain.com) has been designing, building and testing Harley Davidson driveline products for over 25 years. The F6R kit adds a reverse gear to any existing 2008-later factory Harely Davidson Touring motorcycle. With the required modifications the kit can also be installed in 2007 and later Softail and 2006 later Dyna models. For more information on required modifications, you can call Baker at (517) 339-3835.
This kit gives you a reverse gear in your transmission allowing you to use your clutch, stock gear shift lever and the power of your Harley power plant. The latest edition of this kit has some solid manufactured components to modify your factory transmission to have R-1-N-2-3-4-5-6.
To make sure that it will not accidentally shift into reverse it has a lockout. On this model it is operated by a cable that exits the side cover facing to the rear, which allows it to be used with numerous exhaust systems. It is very important when running this safety cable to follow the instructions carefully. This cable must have a 3-inch radius arc and make sure it doesn’t get pinched when running up and through your triple trees and fairing to the lock out lever on your handlebars.
The Kit, made in the USA, comes with billet bearing door and side covers made from 6061-T6 aluminum. The shift drum is made of 12L14 of billet steel and 4140 billet steel shift forks. Add the precision ground gears and you have quality second to none.
The side door and cover are offered polished or gloss black. Also, the side cover is offered with a hydraulic or cable clutch system. Baker has truly evolved this F6R to meet all the needs of different setups.
The kit comes with Very Complete Instructions. I strongly suggest you read them carefully as it does require a competent mechanic with knowledge of Harley’s six-speed transmission. One of the major requirements is a 20-ton press for assembly. You will also need the appropriate tools to pull countershaft gear, Inner primary race serviced tool, Pulley locking tool and Primary drive locking tool. The instructions are very detailed and their support line is top notch and quick should you need it.
To install the kit, you will need to take your primary side off, remove the side cover and door of the transmission and pull your transmission gearset out, replace the side door with the provided one, add the new countershaft and shift drum and reassemble. The reverse gear goes in between the door and side cover. And the provided shift drum allows you to shift into reverse. The 4.98:1 ratio reverse gear in the F6R gearset, which is 45% shorter than the stock 1st gear ( 3.34:1). This makes it an essential creeper gear.
I chose to have my local dealership do the installation. Space Coast Harley-Davidson (www.spacecoastharley.com) located in Palm Bay, FL has a great service team. Their technicians are very knowledgeable and will go the extra mile in taking care of the needs of your motorcycle.
I was a little apprehensive of using the reverse with my prosthetic and not wanting to fall over. That lasted for about ten seconds. The safety lockout mechanism is located on the bottom of your front hand controls allowing easy ergonomic control with your thumb. To put the motorcycle in reverse you will pull in your clutch and shift into first. Then you simply push the safety lever forward with your thumb and shift down again into reverse. The motorcycle will not shift into reverse unless this lever is pushed out and the motorcycle is in 1st gear.
You will need to ease off on your clutch and remember you are being powered by your engine. My first test was in my driveway and within seconds I was very comfortable with backing up. As soon as you shift back into first gear your safety lever will spring back and you should hear a click and feel tension on it knowing it has locked back into place.
NOTE You Are In First Gear Not Neutral
After a few times using the F6R I started challenging myself with more inclined surfaces, eased my mind and no longer worried about where I would park if situations arose that would normally bother me.
Even though this system wasn’t designed specifically for bikers with disabilities, Baker Drivetrain definitely helped me continue to ride.
Without a doubt this was the best system I could have installed on my motorcycle. The only question is why did I wait so long?
