SEX OFFENDER GETS 40 MONTHS FOR RUNNING A CHOP SHOP– TALLAHASSEE, Attorney General Charlie Crist announced Craig Shaw of Lehigh Acres has been sentenced to nearly three and a half years in prison for operating an illegal motorcycle chop shop. Deputies with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office discovered the operation while conducting a routine check of the man’s status as a registered sex offender.During the routine check, deputies found two white vans on Shaw’s property. After getting Shaw’s permission to search the vans, deputies found several complete motorcycle engines inside the vans.

Deputies also found eight motorcycles with stolen VINs, numerous motorcycle parts and tools used to put new VINs on vehicles.

Shaw was arrested and charged with various counts of grand theft.

“While sex offender registration laws are primarily intended to protect children and other innocent Floridians,” said Crist, “it is comforting to know that these laws can also help catch thieves and other lawbreakers.”

Shaw pled guilty in August to one count of grand theft, seven counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle and one count of operating a chop shop. Shaw was sentenced by Judge Thomas Reese to 40 months in prison and ordered to pay over $17,800 in court costs, fines, and restitution.

POLARIS DEALERS NATIONWIDE HOST TOYS FOR TOTS DROP-OFF SITES–MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., Nov. 29, 2005 – As the crispness of autumn gives way to the cold holiday season, good boys and girls anxiously await a visit from jolly old St. Nick. But for many children right here at home, and for reasons a child shouldn’t have to understand, sometimes Santa simply can’t make the trip.

Now in its 58th year, Toys for Tots has helped pick up the slack when Chris Cringle isn’t able to reach every child’s home. With operations in all 50 states, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve volunteers have collected toys for countless kids, from toddlers through teenagers.

This year, Polaris Industries is enlisting in the cause and hosting thousands of official drop-off sites for Toys for Tots donations at dealerships across the country. The recreational vehicle manufacturer and its nationwide network of dealers have joined Toys for Tots in an effort to put smiles on the faces of less fortunate children during the holiday season. Polaris dealers nationwide will collect toys, and the company also will contribute $230,000 in donations.

“We are very honored to work with Toys for Tots and excited to help make the holidays better for underserved children,” said Tom Tiller, CEO Polaris Industries. “This year has been difficult for many families, but people can help by simply adding an extra toy to their holiday shopping list and dropping it at their local Polaris dealership.”

CRIPPLED OLD BIKER BASTARDS–I sent you a email awhile back about the Cobb society web site . Don’t know if you checked it out or not. It has a big following back east and is just starting to get going out here on the west coast. It’s the Crippled old Biker Bastards, guys who have gone down on their bikes and lived to tell about it and are still riding.

It’s all in fun and I thought it mite be something good for your site.

BIKERNET REPORTED EMBEDDED IN EPA, REPORTS–I SEE FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS AND 4TH AMENDMENT RIGHTS VIOLATED. THE SMALL NUMBER OF BIKES BEING REGULALTED DOES NOT MAKE THIS REG WORTH ANYTHING. IT DOES NOT MEET THE RULES OF COMPLIANCE VS HEALTH STANDARDS.

I do believe that the EPA has made some serious mistakes in their recent rulings on regulations pertaining to motorcycles. The Motorcyclist of America have been singled out as a group, without their proper participation under Environmental Justice.

Most Motorcyclist by their behavior patterns do not read the Federal Register or pay a lot of attention until it Affects their Lifestyle and Behavior.

By failing to notify the Motorcyclist through media they would read they failed to notify a Minority Population of rule changes they were planning that would impact their lives. This is a violation of Federal Law.

Motorcycles present about .0001% of the pollution and if the rules EPA are pushing are allowed to stay motorcycles will soon have to follow European Rules and regulations.

A point of interest is that Lawn mowers Affect Air Pollution more than Motorcycles. I think that with the help of Concerned Motorcyclist like myself, the Media, M.R.O. and other sources we can force a study of how this will impact motorcycle riders. I am sure that the outcome of that study will change how EPA is now being applied to motorcyclist.

Environmental Justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.

The Office of Environmental Justice (OEJ) coordinates the Agency’s efforts to integrate environmental justice into all policies, programs, and activities. EPA’s environmental justice mandate extends to all of the Agency’s work, including setting standards, permitting facilities, awarding grants, issuing licenses and regulations and reviewing proposed actions by the federal agencies. OEJ works with all stakeholders to constructively and collaboratively address environmental and public health issues and concerns. The Office also provides information, technical and financial resources to assist and enable the Agency to meet its environmental justice goals and objectives.

EPA’s goal is to provide an environment where all people enjoys the same degree of protection from environmental and health hazards and equal access to the decision-making process to maintain a healthy environment in which to live, learn, and work. TEXAS NATIONAL BIKE SHOW WINNER–Hey here is a shot of that Dyna that your reader was asking about. Hell, I may be slow but at least I get the job done (ok well, most of the time err uh sometimes?).

BIKERNET MEDICAL DEPARTMENT FINDINGS–Steve Wilson, an investigative reporter for Channel 7 News inDetroit, did a story on generic drug price gouging by pharmacies. He found in hisinvestigation that some of these generic drugs were marked up as much as3,000% or more. Yes, that’s not a typo…..three thousand percent!

So often, weblame the drug companies for the high cost of drugs, and usually rightfullyso. But in this case, the fault clearly lies with the pharmacies themselves. For example, if you had to buy a prescription drug, and bought the namebrand, you might pay $100 for 100 pills. The pharmacist might tell you that if you get the generic equivalent, they would only cost $80, making you think you are “saving” $20.

What the pharmacist is not telling you is that those 100 generic pillsmay have only cost him $10!

At the end of the report, one of the anchors asked Mr. Wilson whether or not there were any pharmacies that did not adhere to this practice, and he said that Costco consistently charged little over their cost for the generic drugs.

I went to the Costco site, where you can look up any drug, and get its online price. It says that the in-store prices are consistent with the online prices. I was appalled. Just to give you one example from my own experience, I had to use the drug, Compazine, which helps prevent nausea in chemo patients.

I used the generic equivalent, which cost $54.99 for 60pills at CVS. I checked the price at Costco, and I could have bought 100 pillsfor $19.89. For 145 of my pain pills, I paid $72.57. I could have got 150 atCostco for $28.08.

I would like to mention, that although Costco is a “membership” type store, you do NOT have to be a member to buy prescriptions there, as it is a federally regulated substance. You just tell them at the door that you wish to use the pharmacy, and they will let you in. (this is true)

It pays to shop around

BIKERNET SENIORS DEPARTMENTAn elderly couple found themselves being given a tour of heaven by Saint Peter. “Here is your oceanside condo, over there are the tennis courts, swimming pool, and two golf courses. If you need any refreshments, just stop by any of the many bars located throughout the area.”

“Hell, Delores,” the old man hissed when Saint Peter walked off, “we could have been here ten years ago if we hadn’t quit smoking and eating fried food.”

TP ENGINEERING ADDS NEW OE PRODUCTS TO THEIR 2006 ENGINE LINE-UP–Bethel, CT- Just added to all of their 2006 engines is a new 2-piece billet cam cover with a chromed nosecone, and a remote ignition that uses a crankshaft position sensor installed in the engine case. “Our old style cam covers had the ignition located in the nose cone, but our new low-cavitation flywheel design (patent pending) allows the new crankshaft triggered ignition to be remotely mounted away from the cam cover”, stated Duke Wainright, VP for TP Engineering. “We’re also looking seriously at fuel injection and our new flywheel system will be instrumental in getting us there”

TP Engineering is the premier V-Twin engine builder in the US. One of the best kept secrets in the industry is that TP Engineering manufacturers all of their own parts, cases and internal components of each and every engine that they build? They are totally self contained! All external and internal parts and components are manufactured right here in the United States. TP relies on no outside sources to produce their premium engines. Unlike most engine manufacturers, you will never find a TP part being made overseas.

Their 2006 engine line up includes a 114″ (4 1/8″ bore x 4 _” stroke), 121″ (4 1/8″ bore x 4 1/2″ stroke) and 124″ (4 1/8″ bore x 4 5/8″ stroke) ? all packed full of reliable “fire breathing” horsepower and “stump pulling” torque and feature their new proprietary Scramjet air cleaner which performs as good as it looks. (5 Horsepower gain on stock EFI Twin Cams) And TP has several other patented products found on each and every one of their engines, making them an innovator and not an imitator. All TP engines are blueprinted when built and are factory test-run before shipment for the utmost in quality control. All of these factors add up to a quieter, smother running, reliable high performance engine.

All TP engines are available in the following custom finishes? Show polished, standard polished, powder coated in the color of your choice with the fins polished, show quality “diamond cut” polished, standard “diamond cut” polished and in a raw, natural finish. No other engine manufacturer offers all of these options direct from the factory.

TP Engineering has recently received their EPA certification on all of their engines which qualifies them as a true OE engine manufacturer in all 50 states. Custom and OE bike manufacturers can use TP Engineering engines in their bikes and receive federal and state approval with just a short confirmatory test.

For dealers or custom bike builders interested in adding TP Engineering products to their line up, products please call 866-873-6446 or email them at info@tpeng.com . To see the latest from TP Engineering, visit www.tpengineering.com.

T-SHIRT DEAL OF THE CENTURY–Seth Doulton has some HOT BIKE t-shirts left over from the show series. They have some of the finest art on them I’ve every run across. He needs to unload them and will do-so cheap. If you’ll buy enough he’ll even print the other side of the shirt with your shop or company name for only one buck more. Hell he’ll hook you up with booth space at one of his show, make you a show sponsor, tie your shoes, bring you beer, you name it.

Get ’em while you can, make Christmas gifts out of them, stuff ’em in socks, send them to your friend, be a hero to all the girls you know. I’m not kidding, depending on the number of shirts, the price may be as low as $5 clams.

STEALTH BIKEWORKS BANNER

STEALTH REPORT FROM N.C.–Well it is that time of year when toy runs are everywhere. This Sunday the Charlotte C.B.A presents their annual Toys For Tots Toy Run. STEALTH BIKE WORKS has been invited to participate in the parade. We will have a small float with our rolling chassis on display. This is a great honor for SBW, being the new kids on the block. Thanks to all at the C.B.A who thought of us and invited us.

Here at the shop we keep moving along. We have our shop project, our 71 shovel project and a Russell Mitchell inspired bike for one of our customers. You probably saw the new tour-pak storage rack last week. These racks save wear and tear on your tour-pak. They would make great Christmas gifts. If anyone is interested give us a call at SBW, 704-882-0889. We got our first set of tanks this week from a customer who wants the sides “dished.”

I watched the new V-Twin show this week and it was o.k. I wasn’t that impressed, hopefully it will grow and improve. It was good to hear that the Discovery Bike Build Off’s are coming back. I have been watching the re-runs every chance I get.

As the winter chill approaches and the end of the year draws near, it is time to start those winter projects so everything about winter isn’t all bad and it will be spring again before we know it. Time flies by and it seems it has really taken off on me since opening SBW.

If you get a chance get out and ride to a toy run. You will be glad you did!

Until next week, RIDE!

BIKERS IN BLUE–Some bikers are notorious for breaking the law. But the Hired Guns are paid to enforce it.Founded in 2002 by six Bayonne police officers, the Hired Guns Motorcycle Club now boasts more than 15 members – all cops who ride Harleys.

“It’s a form of escape from everyday life,” said Jim Mahoney, 41, a Bayonne narcotics detective and president of the Hired Guns.

“Some people use alcohol and drugs. We ride,” he said.Police motorcycle clubs are nothing new: the Blue Knights have been around since the 1970s and boast 19,000 members worldwide.

But while other clubs will admit firefighters and civilians, said Mahoney, his club prides itself for admitting only sworn law enforcement officers. Its current membership includes cops from Bayonne and New York City and troopers from the New Jersey State Police.

DAMN, I NEARLY SPACED–The news is wrapped, but Sin’s computer crashed, and I was deciding which way to turn next. We have a ChoppaHead DVD review from Glen to post and a quick article on Big Bear’s Cop Bike. I know there’s more, but I’m spacing. What was it?

There’s a gang of people in the industry who are waking up to the EPA bullshit, including Chris Maida, Editor of American Iron, Rogue from Bikernet, a longtime freedom fighter, Bret Smith of S&S, and Ted Sands from Performance Machine. The MRF is already involved in addition to several ABATE groups. We’re stormin’ the gates. We’ll keep you posted. I know there’s something else, but I’m going to shift gears and bring you more news Sunday. Hopefully it will come to me by then.

I need to hit the Iron Pile, work out and clear my head for the weekend.

Continued From Page 2

HAWAII BUILDOFF

GREAT HAWAIIAN BIKER BUILD-OFF– On Saturday, 17 December 2005, Pacific Rim Cycle, and The Pasha Group will be host to the 50th State’s largest motorcycle rally to be held at Kapiolani Community College in the heart of Honolulu.

In association with KPOI (“The Big Kahuna”) radio, Hawaii’s premier motorcycle publication (Hawaiian Chopper) will put on “The Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off”.

Designed as a series of motorcycle related events, which will include a magazine model search, custom motorcycle contest, tattoo contest, biker build-off, and live rock & roll by Big Dog and Analog, the event is sure to excite both bikers and the general public alike.

Beginning with a special appearance by Danny “Count Cool Rider” Koker, Jose De Miguel, and other special guests, the Marines and Sailors of Marine Corps Base Hawaii will see first hand some of the coolest custom choppers on the planet. This will not only be a chance for America’s fighting men and women to hang out with some of their motorcycle building idols, it will allow the builders to say thanks for their sacrifice on behalf of us all.

On Saturday, 17 December at 10:00am, the gates will open for the “Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off” Rally. Participants will find plenty of parking at the venue, and will be charged a $20.00 entry fee ($15.00 pre-sale) into the festivities.

Those wishing to get their tickets in advance can visit their favorite bike shop. Tix will be on sale at Pacific Rim Cycle, South Seas Harley-Davidson, Cycle City Harley-Davidson, and Grumpy’s Custom Cycles.

To get everyone involved in the day’s activities, fans will enjoy the Hooters/Hawaiian Chopper Magazine bikini model search. Featuring some of Hawaii’s most beautiful women posing on stage for a chance to become a Hawaiian Chopper girl, the winner will also win $500.00 and be featured on the cover of Hawaii’s only biker mag.

Woody’s Chicago Style Hotdogs custom bike contest, and the tattoo contest sponsored by Island Tattoo will allow riders and custom builders to show their prized two-wheeled rides, and their hot tattoo artwork, all in search of a cool trophy to be presented.

A concert featuring two of Hawaii’s top rock & roll acts is, by itself worth the cost of an entry ticket. Classic rock band “Big Dog” will be first up followed by alternative rock band Analog. Both of these groups will delight spectators and fans with their hard driving styles of rock & roll, and will be a great way to cap off the day’s activities.

Oh, and of course, the “Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off” will give spectators the opportunity to select the winner of the Hawaii’s first Biker Build-Off by casting a vote for their favorite chopper and builder.

In addition to all the festivities planned for the wintertime event, joining us will be celebrated motorcycle builders, Danny “Count Cool Rider” Koker of Counts Kustoms and Jose De Miguel of Caribbean Custom Cycles. These custom builders received international notoriety on Discovery Channel’s “Great Biker Build-Off”, the Speed Channel, and magazines such as, Barnett’s Motorcycle Showcase, The Horse, Street Chopper, Hawaiian Chopper and others. Both of these men are wildly popular characters of the motorcycle genre, and will prove to Islanders that motorcycles are indeed an art form.

Finally, heavy metal rock group Motley Crue has allowed us to feature their own specially built choppers on December 17th, while they entertain Hawaii’s fans at the Neil Blaisdell Center on December 14th.

These are the actual bikes that Motley Crue takes on tour with them. When the band appears onstage at the Blaisdell Arena December 14th, these bikes will not be part of the show, in fact, to see these bikes, you will have to attend “The Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off”!

If that isn’t enough, Counts Kustoms will be displaying the “Ozzy” bike built for Rocker Ozzy Osborne. This radical custom chopper is world renown for it’s wild design and special tank.

Of course, no event would be complete without great food, drinks, and giveaways, so we will feature the cooking Hooters, Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, and Woody’s hotdogs. Add great drink specials courtesy of Rosa’s Ice Tee, and numerous prizes from companies such as, Avon Tyres, BMC Choppers, Central Coast Cycles, Harley-Davidson, Big Dog, and a host of other industry leading businesses, and we have a world-class motorcycle rally that will be the benchmark for all others held in the future.

Did I mention that Biker Santa will be on hand? Bring a toy and we will ask him to deliver it to a needy keiki (child) via the Marine Corps Reserves.

This December 17th, make KCC your destination for your weekend ride. You will be glad you came?

For more information visit http://www.hawaiibuildoff.com . Don’t forget to enter your bike or tattoo into one of our contests, and if you are a hot babe looking to get on the cover of Hawaii’s coolest motorcycle mag, drop me an email at alohasports@hawaii.rr.com.

TIRE SIZE TECH QUESTION TO BIG BOAR– I read an article in your tech area on wide tire fender modifications for a Shovelhead and have some question on rim & tire sizes for my 1976 FXE Shovelhead that my save me some time and money.

Here’s a little info on my build before we get to my questions to give you an idea of what I am trying to do.

I took my stock 1976 FL swing arm and removed all the mounting tabs, (brake anchor, Shock mounts, passenger pegs) except for the chain guard mounts. I drilled 7/8″ holes in the center of the swing arm to accept my new shock mount slugs like you use to do to lower your bike and use the stock 12″ shocks. I removed the brake side rotor flange off my stock 76 rear hub and machined a sprocket spacer so I can mount the Flat Exile combination Sprocket Brake rotor on the right side to replace the dish shaped stock sprocket and clean up the left side. I also removed all the rear FL fender lips and wiring harness mounts to accept the wider tire.

What width of 16″ tire & rim combination can I run with the modified FL fender and still clear the chain 150/160? Also If I decide to use my stock 16x 3.00 rim what is the widest tire I can mount on the rim.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

David Smith
mailto:dbs@midohio.net

Hey,

Here’s what Aaron at Big Boar said. “You need a 4-inch width rim max. If you decided to use the stock rim the biggest tire you could run would be a 150mm . And a 150, not a 160, will clear your chain.

By the way. We answer tech question within 24 hours on Bikernet.com in the It’s Your Shot Area.–Bandit

MIAMI POLICE TAKE NEW TACK ON TERROR–MIAMI — Police are planning “in-your-face” shows of force in public places, saying the random, high-profile security operations will keep terrorists guessing about where officers might be next.

As an example, uniformed and plainclothes officers might surround a bank building unannounced, contact the manager about ways to be vigilant against terrorists and hand out leaflets in three languages to customers and people passing by, said police spokesman Angel Calzadilla. He said there would be no random checks of identification.”People are definitely going to notice it,” Deputy Police Chief Frank Fernandez said Monday. “We want that shock. We want that awe. But at the same time, we don’t want people to feel their rights are being threatened. We need them to be our eyes and ears.”

Howard Simon, executive director of ACLU of Florida, said the Miami initiative appears aimed at ensuring that people’s rights are not violated.

S&S TUNING TIP– S&S 113s like about 28 degrees of total ignition timing. At 3000 rpm, the F mark with the vertical line should be at the very front edge of the timing hole, actually just beyond the front edge.

If you are static timing (engine not running) put the T:F mark at the same position (just disappearing at front edge of hole) and that should get you in the ballpark.

Set advance to be all in around 2500 rpm or so, rev limit about 6200.

We always recommend checking timing with a timing light at speed. Get yourself a long clear view timing plug and put a few extra threads on it (or cut back in a lathe) till it actually touches the flywheel and you should be able to view the mark nicely.

IT’S A BLONDE WORLD–Two tourist groups, one made up of all blondes and one of all brunettes, charter a double-decker bus for a weekend in Vegas. The brunettes ride inthe bottom of the bus and the blondes ride on the top level. The brunettesdown below are whooping it up and having a great time when one of themrealizes she doesn’t hear anything from the blondes upstairs.

She decides to go up and investigate. When the brunette reaches the top, shefinds all the blondes frozen in fear, staring straight ahead at the road andclutching the seats in front of them.

The brunette says, “What is going on up here? We’re having a great timedownstairs!”

One of the blondes says, “Yeah, but you’ve got a driver!”

BIKERNET NEWS FLASH -BOOKS AND BOOTS REVIEWED, EPA WARS, NEW PM WHEELS, ROADHOUSE PARTIES, HS PROJECTS AND EMPIRE FRAMES

custom chrome banner

BOBBER MASCOT
Real true bobber from Bob T.

Hey,

An exciting news coming your way. This whole EPA thing is breaking wide open. Our Bonneville effort is flying together with the support of Custom Chrome, Accurate Engineering, Custom Performance and Departure Bike Works. We’ll be launch reports rapidly as they all come together.

I’m a freak about jinxing a deal, so I’m holding my breath until a couple of things come together, then I’ll unleash the word here on another aspect of our Bonneville effort.

There’s so much on my mind, that I better just leave it alone. We’re rolling into the notorious holiday season during a war effort, terrible weather damage and a wicked winter ahead. Don’t let the stress drag you down. Take is slow, warm and calm yourself with Jack Daniels when the need arises. Let’s hit the news:

Black bike

Bikernet Reporter Embedded In EPA

I have someone I know who worked for the EPA for over 25 years and he has agreed to give me some help and ideas about how they work. Here are a couple for starters.

MOTOCYCLES MAKE UP .01% OF VEHICLES. THEIR IMPACT IS NEGLIGABLE AT ANY MEASUREMENT STANDARD. THEY FAILED TO DO AN ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE STUDY ON THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY AND MOTOR CYCLE RIDERS WHO ARE NOT AN ELUSIVE BUNCH. THEY ARE VERY CONSPICUOUS WHEN RIDING DOWN THE HIGHWAY.

FOR THE COMMERCE CLAUSE OF THE CONSTITUTION SAYS THAT ONE CANNOT BLOCK COMMERCE WITHOUT DUE INFUENCE. MOTORCYCLES ARE NOT A DUE INFLUENCE. IF I CAN MAKE A COMPARISON THEY ARE LIKE DINOSAURS, OUT OF SIGHT AND OUT OF MINE TO THE REGULATORS.

WHAT THEY DID TO RESTRICT KITS AND TO INCREASE MOTOR ACCEPTANCE REGARDING POLLUTION DOES NOT EVEN COME TO ONE MILLIMETER ON A ONE MILE RULER AS FAR AS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT IS CONCERNED. IT PROBABLY DID THEM SOME GOOD OR THEY WOULD NOT HAVE SPENT THE TIME AND MONEY TO TAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO A FINAL RULE.

If the EPA Failed To Do One Of The Required Studies It May Null And Void The Regulations. I will try to check into this but sure could use some help. How about passing this on to others that are interested?

2006 PM Image Wheels lo-res2

PERFORMANCE MACHINE MARQUEE, DOMINO AND JUDGE WHEELS FOR 2006–Just when it looked like the wheel market had settled into a safe and repetitive groove, PM comes out with three totally new designs that we can’t wait to see on a bunch of bikes. Machined from a solid aluminum forging, Performance Machine went full on bling with the Marquee. This thing is twenty arced spokes coming from a webbed center to create a wheel that looks like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

The Domino is also a multispoke wheel, but with a clean, open design that would look great on just about anything.

The Judge really caught our eye, too with its five vintage mag style spokes and machined speed dots around the perimeter.

Like all of the PM wheels, they also make a design matched disc, pulley and sprocket for each one of these and are building them in every size imaginable. Contact Performance Machine or your local PM dealer for more information.

BIKERNET HELICOPTER RIDES–Morris and his wife Esther went to the State Fair every year. And everyyear Morris said, “Esther, I’d like to ride in that helicopter.”

Esther always replied, “I know, Morris, but that helicopter ride is fiftydollars. And fifty dollars is fifty dollars.”

One year Esther and Morris went to the fair and Morris said, “Esther, I’m85 years old. If I don’t ride that helicopter today, I might never getanother chance.”

Esther gave her usual reply: “Morris, that helicopter ride is fiftydollars. And fifty dollars is fifty dollars.”

The helicopter pilot overheard this exchange. So he told the couple,”Folks, I’ll make you a deal. I’ll take both of you for a ride. If you canstay quiet for the entire time and not say a word, I won’t charge you. Butif either of you says a single word, it’ll cost you fifty dollars.”

Morris and Esther agreed and so up they went. The pilot did all kinds offancy maneuvers – but not a word was heard. He did all of his dare-deviltricks more than once; still not a word.

When they landed, the pilot said to Morris, “By golly, I did everything Icould to get you two to yell but you didn’t. I’m impressed!”

Morris replied, “Well, I was going to say something when Esther fell out,but fifty dollars is fifty dollars.”

Trike

NEW TRIKE FROM SANTIAGO CHOPPERS– SANTIAGO CHOPPER, headquartered in Gibsonton, Florida, is constantly developing new bike models. One of the latest projects to go forward to production is a trike kit based on a 1939 Ford. The conversion can be applied to any Softail, from 1984 up to current models.

The kit consists of all the major assemblies including the swingarm and a rear axle and differential unit manufactured exclusively for the conversion. The caliper and rotors for the disc brake assemblies are sourced from Brembo. There is a choice of wheels, including spoked or Chevrolet style for the ‘Old School’ look. In 15 x 9 size and fitted with 265/50 x 15 tires, these are said to give an excellent ride.

The fiberglass bodywork is supplied unpainted and the kit is packaged complete with all instructions and the necessary assembly hardware. A deep-seat rigid version of the trike is also available.

Santiago Chopper is soon to be quoted in the Kelley Blue Book. It has now been recognised as a manufacturer and can issue titles for the bikes it supplies. A new company, Santiago Chopper Distribution, has been set up to handle the distribution of the products and is looking to appoint dealers. Premises have also been established in Melbourne, Australia, to meet the growing demand there

BIKERNET SECURITY ADVICE–So a guy is sitting in a bar, when a man with an extremely long duffle bag walks in and sits down next to him.

So he says, “Why do you carry around such a long duffle bag?”

The second guy responds, “Well, I’m a hit man and this is my rifle.” And he pulls out a sniper rifle with an extremely long scope.

So the first guy, intrigued by the intimidating gun, asks if he can look through the scope of the gun, and the hit man agrees.

The guy says, “Wow, I can see my house from here! I can even see my wife from here… And . . . that?s my neighbor in MY house with MY wife!”

The guy, putting down the riffle says to the hitman, “How much do you chargefor a hit?”

The hitman says, “My going rate it $1000 per hit.”

The guy pulls out his wallet and hands the hitman 2000$ and says, “I’d like you to shoot my wife in the head, and my neighbor in the johnson. That should teach them!”

So the hitman picks up the rifle, takes aim, and pauses for several seconds.

The anxious man says, “Why are you waiting?”

So the hitman replies, “Hang on, I think I can save you 1000 bucks.”

Drag pipes

DRAG ADDS TROUBLEMAKERS– ‘TROUBLEMAKER’ exhaust systems from Hooker Headers are now available from Drag.

Hooker claims these are 2-1/2in diameter pipes that really work thanks to the internal stepped design and which should also eliminate blueing. Hooker’s 38 years of exhaust design experience have enabled the company to design a system said to increase top-end horsepower without sacrificing bottom end torque, a common problem with other big bore systems. The pipes feature a metallic ceramic coating on the internal head pipes helping to retain heat and increase exhaust velocity. There are systems for Softails, Dynas and 2005-model Sportsters, with straight-, slash- or scallop-cut ends.

Hooker Headers also offers a choice of baffle cartridges. The standard cartridge is described as a ‘deep rumble’, a popular option for enthusiasts. Alternative cartridges give a smooth, mellow sound or improved flow at the expense of a loud exhaust note. Troublemaker systems are supplied complete with gaskets, C-clips, chromed flanges, machined brackets and detailed instructions.

BIKERNET DATING ADVICE–“Michael, if you were on a date— having supper with a nice young lady, how would you tell her that you have to go to the bathroom?”

Michael said, “Just a minute I have to go pee.”

The teacher responded by saying, “That would be rude and impolite.”

What about you Peter, how would you say it?”

Peter said, “I am sorry, but I really need to go to the bathroom. I’llbe right back.”

“That’s better, but it’s still not very nice to say the word bathroom atthe dinner table.”

“And you, little Johnny, can you use your brain for once and show usyour good manners?”

“I would say: ‘Darling, may I please be excused for a moment? I have toshake hands with a very dear friend of mine, whom I hope you’ll get tomeet after supper.”

The brothers stopped by to check out the Bikernet digs, still under construction, and invite me to their bike show in June of 2006. It?s the Twin Club MC of Norrtelje, Sweden, a 36 year old club, that presents the Custom Bikes Show each June for 30 years. This show draws as many and 500 competitors from Europe. It?s affiliated with Robin Bradley?s World European Championship. Ola E, the President and Henkan, the club Vice President wanted to see if I could support their efforts and maybe make it to the show. I?m only to happy to support any aspect of this industry, any place on the planet as long as they’re good people and not rip-offs.

The lovely Sin Wu and I will make every effort to attend next year and bring you news as the show efforts progress. In addition to representation from several European countries there?s a strong competition between Sweden and Finland. Watch for news as the event nears.

MARDIKIAN INTRODUCES NEW MUSCLE FOR THE VON DUTCH DUSTOM LINE-UP FOR 2006–Kustom Built and Road Tested are the fundamentals of one of the koolest motorcycle companies in the market. Von Dutch Kustom Cycles offers a lifestyle experience, unique with a high level of Americana detail built around quality and performance. The time has come to bring this line of high octane rolling art to the people worldwide.

The New Muscle on the road for 2006 is the addition to Von Dutch Kustom Cycles, newly appointed Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Dealer Development, Mr. Ron Starrantino, a.k.a. ?Ronstar?. Ronstar@vondutch.com will be establishing a worldwide dealer network, as well as a campaign of awareness that will spread beyond the trendsetting clothing and merchandise, taking to the roots of the kustom kulture lifestyle of Southern California. Mr. Starrantino states, ?I do not want to just set up motorcycle shops because Von Dutch Kustom Cycles are about so much more. It?s the kulture, it?s the rebel, it?s the alter ego and it?s the factor of kool. From the icon Flying Eyeball to the neon signs and vintage gas pumps, this is every little boys dream and we all know what separates men from the boys. It?s the price of their toys. We?re here to fit those needs.?

Ronstar was a nationally ranked athlete; a middleweight bodybuilder and was nationally qualified five times. His dedication, perseverance and enthusiasm paved his way to Wall Street in 1991 where within three years he was managing a firm. As an aggressive entrepreneur he went on to own a firm and bought a broker/dealer where he had level 3 trading on the NASD. He continued on with his top brokers and went onto the NYSE. Unfortunately, after the national incident that occurred on September 11th, the market started to plummet, so he retired successful and with a clean license.

In 2002, after meeting with Roger Bourget, he was the prime individual to improve New York sales, which is the original Bourget dealer on the east coast. By 2004 they were rated as the number one dealer, outselling the second largest dealer 2:1. When asked about the sales skyrocketing, Mr. Starrantino stated ?I know how to sell, so if the product is good, it?s going to sell?. He deems that Von Dutch Kustom Cycles has an edge, being very different, very unique, legally compliant meeting the EPA standards and offers a lot for the price point. Von Dutch is a manufactured specialty bike. One very popular model is the Flying Dutchman, which is affordably priced in the mid $30Ks and is truly one of the hottest Bobbers on the market today. The analogy of Ronstar is that in this business the cream will rise and the crap will seek its own level. As more Von Dutch Kustom Cycles are sold and customers are able buy their individuality, their alter ego and set themselves apart from the crowd, Von Dutch Kustom Cycles should come out on top.

The 2006 model year will unveil a new face for Von Dutch, taking a little bite out of that slipping market as three new models are introduced. One is going to be a 300 tire pro street series, a 300 tire chopper series and of course, another unorthodox Bobber. It?s going to be the hottest bikes on the market.

ANOTHER INDIAN MOVIE REVIEW–While in Las Vegas last weekend I saw “The worlds fastest Indian”, a movie about Burt Munro from New Zealand. Anthony Hopkins played Burt and the movie was great, it’s scheduled to be released to the public in Jan ?06?

This guy made his own engine parts like pistons, cams etc. without the machinery we are used to. The movie is a must see, probably the best motorcycle FLICK ever made. Also check out this web site to get an idea of how he spent his life building this motorcycle, it?s really interesting.

BIKERNET ON CAPITAL HILL– After hearing that Bush still didn’t know whether he was alive, Osama himself decided to send Bush a letter in his own handwriting to let him know he was still in the game. Bush opened the letter and it appeared to contain a coded message:

370HSSV 0773H

Bush was baffled, so he e-mailed it to Condi Rice. Condi and her aides had no clue either, so they sent it to the FBI. No one couldsolve it so it went to the CIA, then to NSA. With no clue as to its meaning, they eventually asked Britain ‘s MI-6 For help.

MI-6 cabled the White House:

“Tell the President he’s holding the message upside down.”

2005 AMD PRO SHOW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP/BIG TWIN WEST ANND CUSTOM CHROME DEALER SHOW ALL IN VEGAS– Iron & Lace Calendar cover bike builder Roger Goldammer Repeats Victoryin Las Vegas at 2005 AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building.

Las Vegas, Nevada, Nov 17-20th 2005 – Roger Goldammer of Goldammer Cycle Works, Canada, returned to the 2005 American Motorcycle Dealer magazine (AMD) Pro Show World Championship of Custom Bike Building held this year at the Mandalay Bay Resort Convention Center in Las Vegas to claim the coveted World Championship Builder title for the 2nd time in the Show’s 2 year history. The entry list for the Championship featured 152 bikes from many of the top builders from around the world, making this the biggest pro caliber custom bike contest ever held.

Judging in the Radical Builders Class was conducted by the builders themselves, with each builder asked to choose their 12 favorite bikes, in order, with points awarded down from 1st choice. Goldammer was awarded the top prize by a judging panel of his peers, rather than a structured set of rules and categories with points for chrome and paint outweighing important concept and creativity.

Goldammer’s winning green single cylinder retro bike was an extension of his retro Goldammer Board Track racer which won last year’s show and is featured on the cover and inside the FastDates.com 2006 Iron & Lace Calendar sponsored by Mikuni, Performance Machine and Jardine Performance. The rolling chassis is essentially a hardtail production version of last year’s winner, but without that bike’s more expensive hidden rear shock and working rear suspension. And with conventional hub mounted disc brakes replacing the exotic rim disc brakes used previously on his special 23-inch wheels.

There were many exotic customs at the Show with possibly more exciting chassis designs, but what made this retro 1920’s green bike a winner in the eyes of the other builder’s was Goldammer’s innovative all hand built single cylinder motor based on American V-Twin design components, and forced fed by a beautiful belt driven supercharger.

Unfortunately, despite the highest turnout of quality pro built bikes ever, the AMD Pro Show World Championship will not return to America next year. The AMD Pro Show will return to Europe to regroup with their successful European Bike Building Championship.

To order by mail specify the calendar name, quantity, your name, address, and phone number. Mail with check, money order, Visa/MasterCard info for $16.95 each, plus $6 S&H per US order. International orders should consult the FastDates.com website for ordering information.Mail to: FastDates.com Calendars, 13275 Paxton Street, Arleta, CA 91331

The one word that describes the biggest of them all?AHDRA?s Grand Finale–Las Vegas National?s—the last race of the season? AMAZING! VT ended her race season as the #1 qualifier in the Super Sport class with an index of 10.30. She executed a 10.31 @ 129.64 mph. VT participated in the #1 qualifier ceremony on Sunday with great big smiles and was the ONLY GIRL. In round two, she lost due to bad reaction time. However, she raced in two other classes. Raced her 2000 Custom Fatboy in the ET class and made it to round two. Also participated in the Screamin? Eagle Performance Las Vegas Shoot Out. Mr. Tripp Nobles took VT out in the third round. The fourth Annual Las Vegas High-Stakes Shoot Out had a $15,000 purse. This was the best race weekend to date for VT with many more like it to come!

VT Race Girl is becoming a serious contender. Of course she has great support and the bike ran great? Thanks to the guys at Custom Performance and Bikernet.com.

Track conditions were excellent, along with beautiful weather! We all could have not asked for a more perfect weekend. The AHDRA points are being added up this week?We will know in the next few days how VT placed for her first year of drag racing with the AHDRA.

What is next for VT?On her way to Las Vegas for the V-Twin Expo show, then rest for the holiday and back on the track for more test-n-tune. She is working to be the racer-rider for Hacienda Harley Davidson?s (Scottsdale, AZ) 2006 Destroyer bike. In December, Valerie will attend the Frank Hawley?s Drag Race School. She will ride a Pro Stock bike, which is a 7-second bike at 170mph. At the Vegas race she had a chance to meet George Bryce?looking forward to his world class training program.

A special note from Valerie:On Monday, November 14, the 2005 AHDRA Awards Banquet was held honoring our 2005 Champions. Good food, short & long speeches and many picture opportunities. Congratulations to my friend Jamie McNaughton, 2005 #1 V-Rod National Champion! Jamie has been a great mentor and supporter throughout the year; I could not have done it without him!!! MAUI BIKERS TAKE FATALITIES HARD– With five motorcycle deaths so far this year, more calls are heard for road safety courses.WAILUKU, Brian Vierra recalled the last thing he advised fellow motorcyclist Robert Schuitemaker: “Keep the rubber side down.”

“You know me,” Schuitemaker told him.

“That’s why I’m telling you to keep the rubber side down,” said Vierra.

Vierra learned the next morning that Schuitemaker, 39, a friend for 15 years, had died in a motorcycle accident.

“I couldn’t say anything. I just hung up the phone and cried.”

On the Valley Isle, the friends and families of several motorcyclists have been mourning recently, as the number of motorcycle-related fatalities has jumped.

Four out of the last five traffic fatalities on Maui have been motorcyclists, bringing the total to five for the year, compared with one last year and one in 2003.

“Three of five operators were inexperienced drivers, and that may have been a contributing factor in the crash,” said police Lt. Jeffrey Tanoue, head of the traffic section.

Tanoue said police were still investigating the fatal accidents, but in at least two alcohol is suspected as a factor.

Police traffic investigator Duke Pua said Schuitemaker might have survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

The number of motorcycle drivers is increasing in Maui County as well. There were 2,854 motorcycles registered in Maui County in June, compared with 2,568 in 2004, and 2,386 in 2003.

Tanoue said he suspects with the increase in fuel costs, more people are purchasing motorcycles.

New riders mean more inexperienced riders on the road, Tanoue said.

Ken Moskow, a motorcyclist and former Maui police officer, said drivers of motorcycles should be required to take a safety course.

Moskow, who teaches a motorcycle driving safety course at Maui Community College, said he feels it is more important for motorcyclists to take a class in driving safety because of their vulnerability, compared with car drivers.

Moskow said his course, which costs $175, includes instruction in how motorcyclists can sometimes avoid putting themselves in potentially dangerous situations.

Tim Isbell, owner of Lahaina-based Hawaiian Motorcycle Manufacturing, agrees education is the key and that new drivers as well as those starting to be motorcyclists again after a long lull should receive some course training.

BIKERNET HOUSEHOLD ADVICE–Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: “Free to good home. You want it, you take it.”For three days the fridge sat there without even one person looking twice at it. He eventually decided that people were too un-trusting of this deal. It looked to good to be true, so he changed the sign to read: “Fridge for sale $50.” The next day someone stole it.

While looking at a house, my brother asked the real estate agent which direction was North because, he explained, he didn’t want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked, “Does the sun rise in the North?” When my brother explained that the sun rises in the East, (and has for sometime), she shook her head and said, “Oh, I don’t keep up with that stuff.”

I used to work in technical support for a 24/7 call center. One day I got a call from an individual who asked what hours the call center was open. I told him, “The number you dialed is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” He responded, “Is that Eastern or Pacific time?” Wanting to end the call quickly, I said, “Uh, Pacific.”

My colleague and I were eating our lunch in our cafeteria, when we overheard one of the administrative assistants talking about the sunburn she got on her weekend drive to the shore. She drove down in a convertible, but “didn’t think she’d get sunburned because the car wasmoving….”

My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car It’s designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk.

My friends and I were on a beer run and noticed that the cases were discounted 10%. Since it was a big party, we bought 2 cases. The cashier multiplied 2 times 10% and gave us a 20% discount…

I was hanging out with a friend when we saw a woman with a nose ring attached to an earring by a chain. My friend said, “Wouldn’t the chain rip out every time she turned her head?” I explained that a person’s nose and ear remain the same distance apart no matter which way the head is turned…

I couldn’t find my luggage at the airport baggage area. So I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in good hands. “Now,” she asked me, “has your plane arrived yet?”

CONGRESS CONSIDERS CONSUMERS’ “RIGHT TO REPAIR” Congress recently held hearings regarding the right of American consumers to have access to information regarding the repair and maintenance of their cars, trucks and motorcycles from the manufacturer. Currently, motor vehicle manufacturers are only required by the EPA to provide information about emissions on board diagnostics systems, but nothing pertaining to other repairs or services. This effectively prohibits owners from taking their vehicles to non-dealer repair facilities or from performing repairs or maintenance themselves.

The Motor Vehicle Right to Repair Act of 2005 (HR 2048) was introduced in May by Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX) and Edolphus Towns (D-NY), and was heard November 10 by the Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection. The bill would penalize manufacturers for withholding information necessary to diagnose, service or repair their motor vehicles.

If you feel that consumers should have the right to choose how and where their vehicles can be serviced and repaired, then please weigh in on this important issue by contacting your Congressional Representative in Washington, D.C. by calling 202-224-8601 and ask them to support or co-sponsor HR 2048.

GAS HIKES FUEL BIKE SALES If you think you’re seeing more bikes on the road these days, you’re right! As gasoline prices escalate, so have sales of motorcycles, as consumers opt for a more economic mode of transportation, and more fun too!

Motorcycles get 50.1 mpg on average, while passenger cars get 22.3 mpg and light trucks and SUVs get only 17.7 mpg.

A motorcycle with a 5-gallon tank can go 200-250 miles between fill-ups, which cost less than $15, while a luxury car or light truck/SUV can cost $40-$50 to travel the same distance.

It’s numbers like these that have cost-conscious motorists driving less, trading in their gas-guzzling SUVs for compact cars or hybrids, or going whole hog and buying a motorcycle.

Motorcycle dealers nationwide have reported double-digit increases in sales since Hurricane Katrina drove gas prices over $3.00 a gallon, and even now that the price at the pump has come down slightly, motorcycle sales are still brisk. And most new buyers are citing gas prices and fuel economy as a major factor in their decision to start riding, or to ride again.

Sales of on-highway motorcycles are up 16% compared to the same period last year (July through September), according to the Motorcycle Industry Council, and the purchase of new motorcycles is on track to exceed the one-million mark for the third straight year, marking the 13th consecutive year of record sales.

And while cooler weather typically signals the end of motorcycling in many regions of the country, the high cost of fuel has many motorcyclists considering a longer riding season.

ROADMAX BANNER

WORLD MOTORCYCLE DEMAND EXPECTED TO EXCEED 41 MILLION Worldwide demand for motorcycles is forecast to advance 4.9 percent annually through 2009 to 41.6 million units, valued at almost $40 billion. Demand for all categories of motorcycles is expected to remain healthy, despite the slowdown in growth in key markets such as China, which is rapidly transitioning away from motorcycles and toward cars for its transportation needs. Increased growth in all categories will also be seen in developed markets, where rising fuel prices and (in some markets) continued restrictions on car use are stoking interest in the exceptional fuel economy and cost effectiveness of motorcycles. While the market for large and expensive high displacement motorcycles will also remain strong (at least through 2009), concerns regarding demand have emerged due to the aging of the customer base, especially in the United States and Western Europe. These and other trends are presented in “World Motorcycles,” a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industrial market research firm.

In essence, according to their November market analysis, there are two separate motorcycle markets. One is centered in the industrialized Triad (i.e., the US, Japan and Western Europe), where motorcycles are seen as pleasure vehicles by consumers who already have one or more automobiles. The other, much larger market in unit terms is found in the emerging economies of Asia, where motorcycles are seen as primary family and work vehicles. These vehicles are cheaper, smaller and less powerful than Triad motorcycles.

old photo bob t
Old shot from Bob T.

Unlike the light vehicle industry, which has consolidated down to a handful of key global players, numerous motorcycle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) exist, especially in Asia, which represents the heart of global light motorcycle demand. However, competitive intensity is increasing, evidenced by the ongoing price wars in China, Vietnam and other Southeast Asian markets. Furthermore, restrictions on motorcycle use in large metropolitan areas of China and some other Asian countries will likely cause a shift in demand away from urban areas to more rural markets. While Asia is dominant in terms of unit volume, most key players derive far higher revenues per unit from sales in developed markets such as North America. The clear profitability implications of this difference reveal why so many manufacturers compete so hard to sell machines in North America.

REGENT PAYS HALF MILLION FOR LENO’S HARLEY It wasn’t for the prestige of owning a motorcycle once owned by late-night TV host Jay Leno, or the 78 celebrity autographs inscribed on the bike, but for charitable convictions. Southeast Missouri State University regents president John Tlapek said he submitted the highest bid on E-Bay for Jay Leno’s Harley-Davidson – a half million dollars — because he wanted to help people. All of the proceeds went to the American Red Cross hurricane relief fund.

“I thought it would be a good thing to do what I could do to help those who were negatively affected by the tragedy in the Gulf region,” said Tlapek, who already owns two Harleys.

Tlapek, a private equities investor, appeared on “The Tonight Show” on October 5 and talked with Leno for a few minutes. “He seemed like a real nice guy,” Tlapek said.

Tlapek, who regularly donates to charities, said it took him a while to figure out the celebrity signatures. Luckily, the show sent him an instructional video.

Bill Cosby and Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote their names on the gas tanks. Geena Davis, Shaggy and Jessica Alba scribbled their names on the saddlebags. Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Love Hewitt autographed the front fender.

As far as the motorcycle, Tlapek said he doesn’t have any plans for it right now. For him, that’s almost beside the point.

“I just have always felt like it was important to give back to the community,” he said. “That doesn’t have to mean a donation of dollars. It can be a donation of a person’s time or talents. It’s just important to give back.”

RIDE AGAINST MCBRIDE More than 80 motorcyclists turned Myrtle Beach’s City Council meeting on Tuesday, October 25th, into ?The Ride Against McBride?, an event to criticize Mayor Mark McBride’s earlier statements that he would like to “nudge” bikers with his car. McBride?s inflammatory remarks came during a council meeting as he was explaining that he wanted to ban explicit T-shirts from sale and from being worn in public because his children shouldn’t be exposed to the sort of T-shirt he saw being worn at the fall rally by a biker; “It was very tempting to kind of nudge the guy on the bike (with my car),” McBride told council members.

Some of the outraged bikers attending the City Council meeting to protest McBride’s comments wore T-shirts that read; “Warning: ‘Nudge’ at your own risk” on the back. Other bikers wore T-shirts that said, “Bump me, I will bump you back” and “Nudge McBride off the ballot.” Most felt that McBride’s statements were more offensive than anything they’d ever seen on a T-shirt.

But don’t bother calling or writing McBride to complain, as he has since been defeated in his bid for a third term as Mayor of Myrtle Beach by 576 votes to a political newcomer, John Rhodes.

“Mayor McBride’s reckless comments set off a firestorm of Anti-McBride activity within the biker community,” said Fred Ruddock, state coordinator of ABATE of South Carolina. “McBride lost virtually every motorcyclist vote.”

Joining McBride in the unemployment line is blatant biker basher Cynthia Powell, losing her bid for Town Council after centering her campaign on her desire to eliminate the two motorcycle rallies held in May each year in Myrtle Beach.

JANKLOW CONVICTION UPHELD South Dakota’s highest court has upheld Bill Janklow’s conviction for a 2003 crash that killed a motorcyclist, rejecting the former congressman’s argument that there wasn’t enough evidence for a guilty verdict.

Ruling unanimously, the state Supreme Court also found that Janklow had received a fair trial.

Janklow, 65, was convicted of second-degree manslaughter and reckless driving for killing 55-year-old motorcyclist Randy Scott in August 2003 on a rural highway near Trent.

Authorities said Janklow sped through a stop sign. Janklow has said he was in a diabetic stupor and remembers nothing about the crash.

Janklow, a political power in South Dakota who also served four terms as governor, resigned from the House in January 2004, a month after his conviction. He completed a 100-day jail sentence but had hoped to use the appeal to clear the felony from his record. He is attempting to regain his license to practice law in the state.

BIKERS SHIELD MOURNERS One side rides motorcycles to fight what they believe is an abuse of free speech. The other side uses words and posters that, for some, seem to stretch the boundaries of First Amendment freedoms, but to them are their God-given right.

In August, a group of bikers became outraged when they heard that Fred Phelps and members of his Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., were planning to picket and protest U.S. soldiers’ funerals, claiming that God is killing soldiers because He hates America, so the bikers formed the Patriot Guard, a grassroots organization that’s quickly gaining momentum.

Composed of veterans’ motorcycles groups, motorcycle enthusiasts, Christian motorcycle groups and people who simply consider themselves patriots, the group provides a human barrier at funerals to protect mourners from hearing and seeing the protesters.

So far, the riders have attended three funerals. The first was Staff Sgt. John Dole’s funeral in Chelsea, Okla., on Oct. 11; 40 riders from Kansas participated. The second funeral was for Army Spc. Lucas Frantz in Tonganoxie, Kan., on Oct. 17; 120 riders attended that one. In early November, more than 150 cyclists participated at the funeral for Sgt. Evan Parker in South Haven, Kan.

For the Oklahoma funeral, the group revved their cycles’ engines; in Tonganoxie, they recited the Pledge of Allegiance; and in South Haven, they recited the pledge and revved their engines to drown out the protestors’ chants.

The Patriot Guard would like to see laws changed either prohibiting people from protesting funerals or restricting the area or hours where protesters can be heard.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD: “DIEING TO RIDE” Tijuana police discovered a passenger aboard a motorcycle involved in an accident was in fact a corpse which the driver had been carrying through the rough border city strapped to his back.

The motorcycle driver lost control and skidded in the downtown area; when a policeman approached to investigate the mishap, the driver fled on foot. The police officer checked the passenger, who had been seated behind the driver and found it was the corpse of a man who had died at least six hours earlier.

The corpse was wearing a helmet and beneath it his head had been wrapped in a towel and bound with tape, apparently to keep blood from dripping from a head wound. The corpse was also wearing a lifejacket the straps of which had apparently been used to tie him to the driver.

Police said the dead man had wraps of methamphetamine in his pocket and an unkempt appearance, which led investigators to believe the killing was drug related.

“We think the killer was trying to take the body to a more deserted area to dispose of it,” said Francisco Castro, a spokesman for the Baja California state police’s homicide division.

THE BEST PROTEST SIGN AT THE SEPTEMBER RALLY IN WASHINGTON–“Would someone please just give him a blow job so we can have him impeached?!”

CHARITY BIKE BUILD 2006–My name is Jason McCudden, I am the owner of South Side Kustoms. I am a new custom motorcycle shop in the Buffalo, NY area. As being a part of this community, as a business owner I would like to do my part to put something back into it. So together with Jesse, the owner of Club Diablo, we are working with the Food Bank of Western New York to make Charity Bike Build 2006 a reality.

Starting May 25th 2006 South Side Kustoms and Club Diablo will be hosting a weekly bike night. The main feature of our weekly event will be a custom motorcycle built by South Side Kustoms that will be raffled off at the end of the summer season. All proceeds are to benefit the Food Bank of Western New York and The Make A Wish Foundation.

In recent years, motorcycle events have been huge and continue to grow every year. So we feel this is a prime opportunity to reach this sector of our community with this spectacular event. Many biker events are known to sponsor charities so we know this a group of people that care about people in our community.

Tickets are going to be sold for this bike at $20.00 each. They will be available thru South Side Kustoms, Club Diablo and the Food Bank of WNY. OPEN LETTER TO THE EPA, IF IT APPLIES–This may apply to you or some one you know. It will definitely apply to you in the future. You can change some it to apply to your situation but letters should go to legislators about this.

— ROGUE

To Whom It May Concern:

I own and manage _______________ (enter company name here), a ________________ (motorcycle dealership, motorcycle service center, motorcycle parts provider) and a member of the local business community. I want to make you aware of what is happening to one of the fastest growing industries in our region and directly impacting our business success. Motorcycle sales and registrations are reaching all time highs and the custom parts and other related businesses are growing along with this increase in sales. While revenues are up and this mode of transportation continues to provide possibly the single largest fuel conservation effort in the country and much of the world, the United States government is approaching severely deflating this source of jobs, economic revenue and fuel conservation by changing the standards under which my small business can modify or produce motorcycles.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has chosen to ignore the best interests of the motorcycle small business community in their decision making process. The EPA specifically targeted the motorcycle aftermarket business sector by limiting the number and type of motorcycles we can produce. These new standards are impossible to comply with and successfully run the type of business that I do. We hope, in our support of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, to correct this injustice before the implementation of emission standards enacted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which are so unreasonably strict that our small business will not be able to maintain current personnel and operate at a profitable level.

The rule they are enacting to control emissions is far too broad in its expansive restrictions, far beyond actually controlling emissions. Their proposal would:
* Restrict the manufacturing of motorcycles in volumes less than 3000/yr virtually eliminating the currently booming and very popular custom chopper industry
* Cease the modification or customization of motorcycles by their owners or local service center
*Apply these unreasonable restrictions without giving the industry the opportunity to implement it’s own emission controlling policies
* Deplete a multi-billion dollar industry and the jobs it creates and supports.

Motorcycle consumers depend on my small business to fix what they cannot on their motorcycles and/or supply parts they can install themselves. My business is an important link between keeping motorcyclist’s wheels rolling and also to provide these consumers with a choice as to what changes they want to make to personalize their motorcycles, no matter what brand they decide they feel comfortable riding. We independent shops and consumers need each other to survive the future with the freedoms we deserve. Many consumers do not wish to maintain a relationship with a franchised dealer for their repair and modification work, and undoubtedly deserve the right to other choices.

The EPA operates under its own authority, with little or no Congressional oversight which is why the motorcycle small business community desperately needs your help. Through congressional pressure we are hoping to keep the new rules from eliminating our exploding cottage industry and associated jobs. With your support and the help of other elected officials and community leaders we can stop the rash deterioration of arguably one of today’s most uniquely American industries.

The new regulations will eventually put us out of business. Only the manufacturer’s dealers, namely the industry’s largest few, will be able to work on these bikes because of the anti-tampering provisions of the Emissions Standards rule. Eventually, no one other than the dealer, not even the owner, will be able to work on these bikes. The only modification of motorcycles with the new EPA rules will be, in the EPA’s own words color and chrome. Without your help, I may be forced to close my business entirely. Please do not hesitate to contact the Motorcycle Riders Foundation in Washington D.C. should you have questions or need any additional information.

As true aficionados of clean air and the great outdoors, we riders and business persons in the motorcycle industry fully recognize and support the need to control noise and emissions and as such are willing and anxious to form a nationwide effort to develop and install self-monitoring policies and guidelines for industry improvements to protect the precious environment that we and our children live and ride in.

Thank you for your attention and prompt action toward this very important matter.

Regards,

VAGABOND CHOPPER COMPANY REPORT–The shop was on Speed Tv’s Corbin’s Ride On back in August and things are going good-More guys that want a chick to build them a bike than I thought there would be. I am actually really happy about that as most women irritate me, slightly hehehe- well I am hoping that you will be here in South Florida for the Dec HR Finals. I would love to meet you after decades of reading your stuff.

I will be riding my newest build to the event and I would love to show you a simple but not so simple chopper- that you would appreciate. I thought of you today as I looked up to show someone the article you wrote about David Mann many years ago. It is on my office wall. Don Rogers said that my office looked like a David Mann museum. I liked that piece when it first came out as it allowed me to get to personally know him to through your writing. He was an incredible artist and I am sure an even more incredible human being.

I look forward to hearing from you when you get time. Hey again thank you for that spot in the magazine back in April that helped set up the things that have happened since.

Always my pleasure,

STEALTH BIKEWORKS BANNER

BIKERNET STEALTH BIKE WORKS REPORT FROM NC–Last weekend STEALTH BIKE WORKS was at the annual C.B.A swap meet here in Charlotte. The swap meet is always a good time. A time to see old friends, a time to swap stories, some true, some not so true. One thing that stuck in my mind from the swap meet was how many people I saw with the “Flipped H-D patches” and even a couple of trailers were sporting “Flipped Bar+Shields.”

It looks like that “Big Business, Corporate America attitude” may be starting to catch up with old H-D? While at the swap meet, we were located across from a helmet vendor. It was amazing to watch how many people put the helmet on backwards while trying them on??????

It has been a couple of weeks since I have sent anything in. “The Meanest” and I moved in to the new house, along with our pit bull puppy J.C. Things are starting to get organized. As far as SBW goes we are chugging along. We have “dished” the sides, or ” flipped” the sides on a set of 5 gallon fat bob tanks. They are cool! There are pics of them in the Sunday post. We already have an order to do a set for a customer. If anyone else is interested give us a call at 704-882-0889. We also have in the works a rack to put your detachable tour-pak on when you are not using it. This rack is made by Alternative Machine and will be availiable at SBW.

It is amazing when you open a shop how everyone thinks you are rolling in money! This is anything but the truth. It is also amazing to hear how opening a shop is “everyone’s dream.” I guess what you see on T.V. has made it that way. For the ones who are true to themselves, I say go for it. To the ones who think they will be rich in six months, I say think again. If you are not doing it for the love of doing it, you are doing it for the wrong reasons.

This is a tough business, you earn your keep and you earn your business, it doesn’t come easy. There are a lot of risks involved with no guarantees. There are sacrifices you have to make everyday, some of which are very hard to do. The question you have to keep answering is “How bad do you want it?” Another thing is that there never is enough money to do everything all at once, so you have to pick and choose as you go. Again there are no promises or guarantees. I go with my gut a lot and some may say that is the wrong way to go, but I have never been one for reports and charts. To me this takes your heart and soul out of it and that just isn’t me. It is funny how your perspective on things change when you open your own shop. I used to think a long time ago that everything H-D was cool and I would look forward to the next “new” item they would come out with. I have lost all faith in what they are about. Those flipped patches did look cool! The really cool stuff comes from the aftermarket shops. The shops you see with the lights on late at night. They are there because they love what they do. Support your local aftermarket shop. Think about what it would be like without them!

Right now we have two ground up projects and a shop project going on, so we have surprised some people and maybe ourselves a little bit. As winter approaches we are planning on getting our name out even more. We will be at the Easyrider Bike Show here in Charlotte in February.

Yeah, so far it has been a roller coaster ride and we are still hanging on and we probably will never get rich, but I guess we are already rich in a lot of other ways. Having the chance to do what we love to do on our own terms, doing things our way, and doing what we love! Yeah, I guess you can’t buy any of that at any price!

Until next week, RIDE!

kendon lift

NEW KENDON LIFT–No……………you need a new lift……………..if you have the old round tube lift. The new lift (photo enclosed) has square tubing used in the scissors (far less labor to assemble) rather than the labor intensive round tube scissors previously used.

Attached is a photo of the chopper lift latest version. Both the front and rear section can be detached to remove the front and rear wheels. We also have a “builders kit” that holds a frame securely allowing ongoing construction on the lift even when the motorcycle has no fork or rear suspension. The builder kit hold the frame suspended just above the lift surface.(The builder kit BOLTS DOWN on the lift for a secure work station).

IS THAT THE NEWS OR WHAT?–This industry in 2006 will shake like an earthquake. There’s so much going on. I’m currently working with Gard Hollinger of LA Chop Rods and Scott Long of Central Coast Customs on a movie or television show treatment. Ya never know. Motorcycles are on a upswing from so many directions, yet we’re facing restrictions like never before. We’ll keep you posted of anything that moves, good or bad.

I’m working on an article on Boss Hoss and Saxon for the next American Big Twin Dealer rag. I need to write my wild vintage car race report and there’s something I’m forgetting. Oh, two more bike features are headed to the site. One is a complete build from Departure Bike Works in Richmond, VA. You’ll love this bike.

This is one of John Reed’s Vs on the road from Custom Chrome.

We’re beginning to nail down our Bonneville effort. We’re running two Bikes: A turbo charged V-Rod by Custom Performance in Phoenix and a 45 Flathead we’ll build here, with Departure Bike Works and of course my Panhead sport bike with Accurate Engineering, but the competition in the Big Twin area is fierce and I don’t expect any records, just the adrenaline rush of getting down the salt. Hang on for reports.

The last chapter of the first Chance Hogan book was posted in the Cantina last week in the Books section. You can read the entire unedited book now, as a member and several other books. Next year I will edit, rewrite and publish the dam thing. Hang on.

Have a helluva weekend.

weld wheels

WELD INTRODUCE NEW SIZES AND STYLES IN CHROME–Kansas City, MO- Another first from Weld is their new 17″ x 12″ one-piece forged billet wheel that was designed, engineered and manufactured specifically for Avon’s new 330 tire series. Mark Finnie, Vice President/GM of Weld’s Motorcycle Division stated, “Unlike the 2-piece 18″ x 14” Monster wheel that we developed exclusively for the new 360 series tires, this new wheel is actually produced from a single billet forging and has been tried and tested by many of the world’s top custom bike builders.

Weld’s latest additions to the “wide tire wars” (17″ x 12″ and 18″ x 14″ wheels) are now both offered in luxurious chrome, backed by an exclusive 5-warranty or show quality polish. No other “wide wheel” manufacture can make this claim! Both of these wheels are now available in the following styles: Recluse, Starburst, Redneck, Blade, Trotta, HotMatch and Creations. Additional styles are on the drawing board and will be announced soon. Both of these “wide tire” wheels are available in several different hub applications including driveside, split hub driveside and standard applications.

“We have always been an innovator and leading force in all of our other market segments and this same philosophy has been applied to our motorcycle division.” “It takes a “family” of experts to design something that hasn’t been seen yet”, Greg added.

Weld is also known for their revolutionary “Flare Series” wheels which have much more dimension to them and appear to have a 3D effect. All the “flare series” front wheels have an integrated hub and the rears are either pulley/hub or driveside. You must use Weld’s rotors and pulleys on this series of wheels. The “Flare Series” wheels are available in the following sizes: 18″ x 10″, 18″ x 8.5″, 18″ x 5″, 18″ x 3.5″, 21″ x 3.25″ and 21″ x 2.15″ and are currently available at dealers nationwide.

Watch for additional “flare series” wheel designs along with the introduction of two-piece rotors. Weld is also adding 17″ x 6.25″ wheels and the “reintroduction” of the 18″ x 4″ to accommodate the larger tire sizes that Harley-Davidson is now offering with their new models.

Please call 866-753-4289 to receive Weld Racing Motorcycle’s ’05 catalog featuring their complete line of wheels, rotors, pulleys, sprockets, billet calipers and apparel or visit http://www.weldmotorcycle.com on the internet. Weld Motorcycle, 6600 Stadium Drive, Kansas City, Mo. 64129

stolen bike

MY STOLEN BIKE AT THE ‘LOVE RIDE” ON 11/13/05– PLEASE READ MY TRUE STORY– Hello, my name is Jim McClain and I would like to tell you about my custom motorcycle that was stolen at the LOVE RIDE on 11 / 13 / 05. This would be the second year my wife and I attended this event.

My wife Stacy and I were on our 2001 custom built bike by THUNDER EAGLE in Corona, Ca. and our friends Shawn & Tammy were on their new factory bike. We arrived at the event at about 11:30 AM and we were directed into a grass area just right of the entrance of the Castaic Park. I parked our bike and locked it with a wheel lock that bolts to the rear brake rotor. We then went into the event for a couple hours and when we came out to leave at 2:45 PM our beautiful bike was gone.. I cannot express to you the utter disbelief and gut-wrenching sorrow we felt!

I immediately ran about 40 feet to where a police officer was standing directing traffic the whole time and told him of my bike being stolen. He called two officers by radio who were only 40 yards or so away from us and they immediately came to my location. They exited the cruiser and walked with me to where my bike was last seen(where I parked it on the grass ). The officers proceeded to make a report when all of a sudden my friend Shawn yelled out, “JIM, THERE GOES YOUR BIKE!!!!” The thief was riding right past us on the main street just off the grass parking area about 60 yards.

I asked the officers to radio the patrol car at the intersection we could see that the thief was heading towards. They said, ” We are.”

To my complete shock the group of bikes stopped at the intersection for about 30 seconds or so then proceeded to pull away. This intersection was in our sight and there were two police cruisers and at least two officers standing within 10 feet from my stolen bike at this point. I turned to the two officers standing next to me with a bewildered look on my face and asked them why didn’t they stop the guy. They glared at me with a blank look on their faces and one of them said, “We are trying.”

I said to them, “Lets get in your car and chase them down. We can catch him! He’s right there!!”

They said, “No, just wait here.”

I stood there with my heart in my throat as my wife was crying and we watched our dream bike disappear from our line of sight. I instantly thought of the next two intersections that they would incounter, with police officers at each of these points. I thought for sure they would stop this guy at one of these points. We would get our bike back and this punk would go to jail. Four or five minutes go by with no info and the officers telling us nothing. At this point, we realize this guy could be getting on the freeway by now and our chances of getting our dream bike back is dramatically slipping away. After a few more minutes I started asking the officers questions:

Why didn’t you stop the first intersection for less than a minute or two and we could have caught them?

Officer Diaz said, ” We tried but there was radio static.”

(I could have ran up the that first intersection in less than 30 seconds!)

Why didn’t they stop the next two intersections with officers already positioned there?

Officer SOOHOO said. “We are trying.”

(We could have caught up to the guy at the second intersection if we just got in the police car and tried!)

I can’t understand the incompetence and lack of aggressiveness shown by officer DIAZ & SOOHOO from parks services bureau CASTAIC STATION, as well as the overwhelming amount of Police and Highway Patrol officers that were there could not stop the guy right in front of them.

I still can’t believe our dream bike is gone and the worst part is we didn’t have insurance coverage. Our previous insurance company (PACIFIC SPECIALTY INS.) cancelled us because the bike was custom built and I wasn’t able to find a new company to insure the bike yet. My wife and I work hard, we don’t make a lot of money, we have four children and it is a tragedy for us to lose our bike. I just wanted to share this with you with the hope that you could do something to prevent this from happening to someone else.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS LETTER,

Tell your readers too. It is also that long-awaited good movie about motorcycles.

You can learn more at the website and see a trailer:www.worldsfastestindian.com.

It has limited openings in NYC and LA in a few weeks (for Oscar consideration), but I don’t think it will show other places until early Feb. Do not miss it.
