BIKERNET SPIKE INVESTIGATION–I’ve been shopping around and not coming across to many places, and I’ve turned to ebay for some chrome spikes for my 2006 Hayabusa. This guy wants 75 dollars for 6 chrome spikes that fit around the front fairing area on a Hayabusa.

I was hoping to find this same product, in chrome of course, and for a bit better of a price. I’d like to put those low profile spikes all around my bike. Here is the website of what this guy is selling so you can take a look at it and tell me if you have these or can get these for a better price!

MARK LUNSFORD READY TO ROLL WITH JESSIE’S RIDE–Santiago Chopper Specialties of Tampa Bay is set to officially present a custom chopper Trike they built in memory of Jessica Lunsford to her father, Mark Lunsford and the foundation he started in her name. Tampa – It has been a year since Mark Lunsford experienced every parent’s nightmare. The road has been long and arduous but one Mark feels he is destined to travel. Now he will have a new mode of transportation. Alan and Christine Bernard of Santiago Chopper Specialties is proudly presenting their donated Trike, aptly named “Jessie’s Ride”, during Bike Week 2006, Saturday March 4th at 12 noon.

The presentation and Mark Lunsford’s subsequent press conference* is taking place at Destination Daytona located at US 1 and I95 in Ormond Beach. Guest speakers include Charlie Crist, Nancy Argenziano, Mayor Fred Costello and others who support the Jessica Lunsford Act.

Mark Lunsford will be announcing his future plans and the Bike Week 2006 Kick Start Tour. “Jessie’s Ride”, along with Mark and Alan from Santiago Chopper, will be making a different stop in Daytona each day of Bike Week 2006.

As residents of Tampa Bay and parents themselves, Alan and Christine watched Mark Lunsford struggle for composure each time he appeared on television during the search for his daughter. They empathized with Mark and felt moved to help after Jessica was found. They also noticed, by the infamous hat Mark always wore, that he was into motorcycles. That is when it hit them. They could help by doing what they do best; build a custom chopper for the Jessica Marie Lunsford Foundation.

They had never met Mark before but contacted him and made the offer. He was moved by the generous donation and immediately accepted. Upon their first meeting, Alan and Mark became instant friends. It has taken approximately 5 months of many sleepless nights, but “Jessie’s Ride” is finally ready to make her national debut.

Mark intends to use the Trike to help him further his work to protect children. It is his and Santiago’s hope that the Trike will help to create a greater awareness to strengthen laws against child predators. Mark and Santiago Chopper plan to display the Trike in several major bike shows throughout the year, in addition to the cross country campaign where it is Mark’s goal to change the laws in every state.

Jessie’s Ride is much more than steel and paint; it is the result of a true labor of love and inspiration. Love, for a man who has endured the unfathomable loss of a precious child, yet who has persevered to fight for the protection of other children. BONNEVILLE 2006 BIKERNET SALT SHAKER ENGINE REPORT–Crankcases are on the way! Yep, I’ve heard that before. If they arrive this week I will send out the mock-up engine. I am working with Dan Baisley to change the valve angle so we can run 1.300 deep combustion chambers instead of 1.635. This will be much better for flame propagation and we can run 13.25:1 compression with an almost flat top piston.

This is the new combustion chamber I want to test anyway, for our standard engines. I will include a sprocket shaft with the mock-up engine. I talk to Mil Blair today and I am in line for the new fuel injection system which we will put on the Outlaw. I just finished a 40-hour weekend so right now I am going to go home at a decent hour.

YOU GOTTA BE SHITTIN’ ME–Have you ever wondered where: “You gotta be shittin’ me!” came from?Well, it just happens to have originated through the Father of our Country, way back when George Washington was crossing the Delaware River with his troops.

There were 33 (remember this number) in Washington’s boat. It was extremely dark and storming furiously and the water was tossing them about. Finally, Washington grabbed Corporal Peters (remember this name) and stationed him at the front of the boat with a lantern. He ordered him to keep swinging it, so they could see where they were heading. Corporal Peters, through driving rain and cold, continued swinging the lantern back and forth, back and forth.

Then a big gust of wind and a wave hit throwing Corporal Peters and his lantern into the Delaware. Washington and his troops searched for nearly an hour trying to find Corporal Peters, but to no avail. All of them felt terrible, for the Corporal had been one of their favorites.

Sometime later, Washington and his troops landed on the other side, wet and totally exhausted. He rallied the troops and told them that they must go on. Another hour later, one of his men said, “General, I see lights ahead.

“They trudged toward the lights and came upon a huge house. What they didn’t know, was that this was a house of ill repute hidden in the forest to serve all who came.

General Washington pounded on the door, his men crowding around him. The door swung open, and much to his surprise stood a beautiful woman. A huge smile came across her face, to see so many men standing there.

Washington was the first to speak, “Madam, I am General George Washington, and these are my men. We are tired, wet, exhausted, and desperately need warmth and comfort.”

Again, the Madam looked at all the men standing there, and with a broad smile on her face, said, “Well, General, you have come to the right place. We can surely give you warmth and comfort. How many men do you have?

” Washington replied, Well, madam, there are 32 of us without Peters.”

And the Madam said, “You gotta be shittin’ me!”

BIKERNET STEALTH REPORT–It is spring here in Charlotte! Yesterday the temps hit 75 and today 80! It feels great! Bikes are out on the road and people are gearing up for the riding season. Here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS we keep moving on.

SBW got our first Triumph to work on. The Triumph has “THE HORSE” written all over it. We are going to do a lot of fab work on the old boy. Chopper john can’t wait to use his new plasma cutter. He?s drawn up some wicked sissy bar designs. We should have one or two done soon. That is what I love about STEALTH BIKE WORKS, we do our own thing. Chopper John, Max and myself work real well together and we are a tight knit group. Our 1 year anniversary is fast approaching (May 10th) and I can’t believe how the time has past so quickly, but as they say, “Time flies when you are having fun!” That is what we try to do at SBW too, have some fun. It is a business but we try to make it a fun business.

Our customer base is getting stronger and growing. Word of mouth is our best advertisement and it is good to hear people tell you that their friends sent them to SBW.

We have a few things lined up for the spring and summer. Starting in April, the 3rd Friday of every month SBW will host “BIKER NIGHT.” We will have food, music of some sort and we willbe showing the Biker-Build Off videos. Just a time to relax, talk bikes and tell some tall tales. Kristophers Restaurant has invited us to participate in their bike night, Wednesday night of each month starting in April. SBW will be at the Smoke-Out June 24th and 25th. We are looking forward to being a part of this great event!

All you hear about lately is the EPA and the new laws concerning exhaust systems and custom bikes. We as bikers need to do what we can to fight this infringement of our rights. Do some research and you will be surprised who supports the EPA and their laws. Let your money do the talking whenever possible; do not support any company that supports these laws. We as bikers will survive this, we have never given in or up when it comes to our freedom to be what we are.

With that being said, it is 80 degrees outside! Do you think “THE MEANEST” would get mad if we closed the shop and went riding????

AMERICAN MOTORCYCLE MADNESS MAY 19-21–Street Chopper Magazine has brought together 15 top bike builders to square off for the $15,000 purse at the All American Motorcycle Madness May 19th, 20th and 21st at the Santa Maria Fairpark in Santa Maria, CA.

Aaron Greene of Paramount Custom Cycles took home the top prize in last years Street Chopper build off. He will be back to defend his title along with second place winner Johnny Chop and third place winner Cole Foster. The rest of the field reads like the who’s who of custom bike building.

Jim and Shaun Wubben from PB Choppers top the list of new invites for the 2006 competition; they cleaned up in 2005 at Sturgis winning the Biker/Penthouse build off, second place in the Legends Top 50 show and first and second place in the American Iron show. I was very excited to read about the Gateway Program in the Sunday editionof The Province and believe that you should be commended for your ambitiousplans designed to reduce traffic congestion and get “people and goods movingagain.” Being a resident of Surrey and with many of our members residing inthe Lower Mainland, this initiative will impact many of us greatly.

This program is very important and we feel that the government needs to lookto other forward thinking cities in the world to see what techniques theyare using to reduce the gridlock. Specifically, all over the worldmotorcycles are used as an alternate form of transportation. Motorcyclestake up less space, create less impact on our roadways and are a moreenvironmentally friendly form of transportation than the single occupantvehicle. Motorcycling is encouraged in these cities by waiving tolls onbridges and roadways, along with free parking and other incentives.

The government is willing to invest “$50 million in cycling infrastructure -the largest in the history of the province” which is commendable, but it isalso very important to recognize that not everyone is physically capable ofriding a bicycle and that is where a motorcycle or scooter comes into thepicture. The government needs to acknowledge the benefits of motorcyclesand the role that they play in reducing congestion. It’s also a great timefor them to invest in the role of motorcycles in traffic reduction byexempting motorcycles from any of the proposed tolls involved in the GatewayProgram and any other future traffic planning programs.

REMEMBER TO SECURE YOUR MOTORCYCLE AT BIKE WEEK– BIKE THEFTS SURGE It’s no secret that in the last five years, the motorcycle market has experienced phenomenal growth. Sales have doubled since 1999 and reached their highest levels in three decades. Unfortunately, going hand in hand with that has been an alarming increase in the instances of bike theft.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reports that motorcycle theft increased more than 55% from 2002 to 2003 in the U.S. and Canada. That’s one bike stolen every 9.5 minutes. Of these stolen bikes, only 25-30% were recovered.

What are the most effective means of protecting your ride? A survey conducted last spring by Opinion Research Corporation indicated what bike owners are currently doing: 88% always keep their bikes concealed in a garage or storage area when parked at home; 80% remove their keys from their parked bikes; 76% use locks; 62% park in a well-lit area and 47% use kill stitches in an attempt to prevent theft.Only 16% use alarms.

MAN WITH HIS EAR TO THE INDUSTRY– I was at the Indianapolis motorcycle vendor show last week and I met a guy “John” Covington of the TV show STEEL DREAMS. He said he knows you and we talked about how to make a buck with my custom ear plugs in the mc world. This is bigger than the mc world, it just got it start here because of loud pipes. There was 1 million sq feet of vendors which consisted of numerous motorcycles, countless parts manufactures, apparel suppliers, helmet manufactures, and you name it.

We were the only company promoting hearing protection and custom molded in ear appliances. We signed up several mc dealers/shops that will be offering the custom molded plugs in house. The guy who finished first in formula 1 auto racing is going to take it to the circuit and sponsor his car. I walked the floor and met with 3 companies that have in helmet communication systems and they have agreed to include a port for our custom molded stereo headphones.

The BMW owners group stopped by and is going to test our stuff against what ever is out there. We will win and then they are going to endorse the products. We are meeting in FL next Monday-Tuesday to license 2 products to IRONMAN. They are the BIGEAR IRONMAN swim plug and BIGEAR IRONMAN ULTIMATE CHAMPION stereo head set, which is also endorsed by the bmw owner group. How many triathlons are there???? THE BIKERNET ROGUE RULES–I have been telling people that the push to make rider education mandatory is About Money and Not Safety.Well it has again raised its ugly head.The Motorcycle Safety Foundation wants to make Rider Education Mandatory. They have been successful in many states of doing that for those under 21 years of age. Now their push is to make it Mandatory for getting motorcycle endorsements to your licenses, even if you have past rider experience or can pass the state exam.

They are also asking for it to be made MANDATORY for licensed riders to take Remedial Classes. Yep, even if you have been riding for over 50 years, like I have, they want me and you to go back to school and of course pay for that.

They want to guarantee their future and income and Have You and I Pay For It. In most places there is a cap on what can be charged for this Forced Education and if they are successful in getting that removed we are in for even more trouble. How much will we have to pay to ride our motorcycles?????

Some sad news is that ABATE and some other MROs have Rider Education Programs that they run and make money from and are also pushing for these programs. I and others hopefully will keep you informed which ones they are and suggest you do not support them.

Oh, just for the record, I became a Motorcycle Safety Instructor on 5/17/1981, and I Think that the courses are good for those who need them, but That They Should NOT BE MANDATORY.

Hopefully the Motorcycle Riders of This Country Will Let Their Elected Officials Know How They Feel About This.

BAD COP REPORT FROM FLORIDA– KISSIMMEE — A former Florida Highway Patrol captain accused of lying to have a ticket dismissed for a woman whom he had pulled over was found guilty Monday of two misdemeanors.

Sterling L. King, who was fired by the FHP last year when an investigation found inappropriate communication with the woman, faced a third-degree felony charge of official misconduct. But a five-man, one-woman jury found him guilty of the lesser charges of attempted official misconduct and false official statements, both misdemeanors.

King did not testify and did not comment after the verdict.

King had written a letter to the court asking that a ticket he wrote for Alaina Renae Edgemon be dismissed because of a case of mistaken identity. The ticket was issued to Edgemon on May 10, 2004, after King stopped her on the Central Florida GreeneWay.

“I would expect an officer to write a ticket, give you the ticket . . . offer you your choices and then done be with it. But that’s not what happened. He started asking me questions,” Edgemon testified.

Edgemon said King took condoms from her car and e-mailed her about them later.

“At that point, the conversation was by no means what one with a traffic cop should have been,” Edgemon said.

King and the woman exchanged e-mails during the next 19 weeks, according to an FHP investigation.

In June 2004, King wrote a letter to the hearing officer that handles traffic cases in Osceola. Based on that letter, the case was dismissed.

Prosecutors maintained that, by falsifying a public document to illegally obtain a benefit for Edgemon, King committed official misconduct.

King was fined $1,500 and has 30 days to appeal.

King was in charge of Orange and Osceola field operations for about a year. Before that, he was a public-information officer for several years in the Tampa-area FHP troop and transferred to Miami, where he was promoted to captain.

IT’S A WRAP FOR THIS WEEK–But there’s hot stuff on our plate. One brother responded to my response to H-D Noise Concerns published last week in the news. We’ve been discussing the noise issue ever since. I’ve also discussed the EPA issues with Brett Smith, the President of S&S and we’re making some headway. Brett feels strongly that there needs to be universal noise testing procedures and regulations. I agree, but the decibel levels are a strident issue. If they quiet our systems to the level of Toyotas, I believe more motorcyclists will be in danger.

PEV addressed some of his concerns above, but he made a point. What about sirens and emergency vehicles. They need to make noise or they’re in serious trouble. We do to. On the otherhand, if you blow your neighbors windows out at 2:00 a.m. with a set of open drag pipes on a 124-inch stroker, you deserve to have your ass kicked. So what is an acceptable noise level, that lets motorists know that we’re around and to watch out, yet doesn’t crack windshields. Bikernet wants to perform a series of decibel level tests, and city noise related tests, but we need some testing equipment and recording facilities. Let us know, if you can assist.

In the meantime, let’s have some fun, goddamnit. I need to check on our 45 frame, like the one above at US Choppers. Then it’s Happy Hour at the Dive Joint on the edge of the harbor?

BIKERNET COUNTDOWN TO FLORIDA BIKE WEEK–The NASCAR races were in Daytona Beach this past weekend and to many that means the start of the parties. The area bars and hotels are gearing up for the increase of people coming to the area.

Bike Week is only a few weeks away and already there are things in the newspaper, radio, bike shops and bars about what is happening where and wanting you to come visit them.

Typically Bike Week is the first full week in March which actually turns into 10 days and this year is March 3rd to March 12th and draws around 500,000 people. It has continued to spread through Volusia County and now includes Orange County (Orlando) to the West and Brevard County (Cocco Beach) to the South.

They are estimating that the numbers will increase to 700,000 this year by including other areas. Orlando is having a BIG PUSH and many people are opting to go there and take the hours ride to Daytona Beach for what ever they want to see.

Cocco Beach just South of Daytona off I-95 is a big attraction that draws 20,000 nightly to the area year round. With Florida Today newspaper reporting 292 Hotels and Motels, 198 Restaurants, 5.4 Miles of Shoreline and numerous other facts it is a hot spot. They left out the part about it being a Biker Friendly area. And those that chose to go there during Bike Week will tell you it definitely is.

There are more and more people doing the trip to Miami, FT. Lauderdale and Key West. There is a lot to do in Florida and No Snow.

Within the 10 days of Bike Week it has been estimated that the Bikers spend $300 Million Dollars. No wonder the surrounding areas want a piece of the action. 90% of the motorcycles that come to Bike Week are said to be Harley-Davidson but those numbers are changing as more imports roll into the region.

It does not matter who you are, doctor, lawyer, Indian chief, male, female, RUB (Rich Urban Biker) 1% or a momma’s boy or girl. Daytona Beach and the surrounding area is PARTY TIME.

I will write weekly reports on what is going on, statistics, locations, events, parties and place you just can’t miss. Of course I will definitely be holding court at the Last Resort Bar, 5812S. Ridgewood (US1) in Port Orange and the Highlander Caf? 1821 S. Ridgewood Ave., South Daytona.

A Must Visit is Bruce Rossmeyers Daytona Harley Davidson located at I-95 and US1, Exit 273. It is being called Destination Daytona and is understandable with its on site expo, live entertainment, manufacturers displays, food and fun. The entertainment is put on by Jim Betlach so you know it is going to be good.

Heading South on US1 is the famous Ormond Strip with the Broken Spoke, Iron Horse, Boot Hill Saloon and numerous other places of interest.

I have been invited to visit Softails Saloon at 2365 International Speedway (RT. 192) in Deland. Wet T-Shirts, Exotic Dancers and Full Liquor Bar, I guess you know I won’t miss it. Always had a good time!

EXHAUST NOISE DEBATE BRISTLES– I think the first thing iS to draft a letter to H-D asking them to stay out of the situation. What we do with their product after we buy it is none of their business. I’d be happy to work something up. After all, Ford doesn’t tell you not to take a 4WD truck off road because the environment needs protection.

Then, we have to address the idea that not only have these restrictions come up before, but where do they lead? I remember a community in Cali that didn’t allow pickup trucks, nice or not, to be parked on the street or in driveways other than work times of 8-5. This is a restriction on freedom of choice, but if you drive a truck you are free to live elsewhere. So where is the argument?

Research on noise levels and contributions is okay, but what is the specific goal? Will comparing our noise to a car alarm or garbage truck or leaf blower be an excuse? How can we utilize that info as a defense? The main problem is the idea that there will be an arbitrary standard that will target specific items (motorcycles) ONLY.

The slippery slope goes from there to a place we don’t want to be, so we must awaken the non-bikers to the calamity that awaits by making a direct comparison and fighting for it. If a lawn mower makes the same noise, then we must push for quieting average Joe’s devices as well as our own. Only by making the absurdity of the notion apparent can we make headway. I have no problem with the assertion that ‘loud pipes save lives.’ Today’s auto manufacturers do all they can to insulate the driver from the noise that is coincidental with the act of driving. Add to that the stereos, cell phones, tinted windows, and visibility is diminished. How can we equate our noise to a siren, for example, and use that comparison for greater visibility/notice from distracted drivers? Statistical analysis of bike/cage accidents, and, especially, tying the increased use of motorcycles as legitimate transportation devices that are energy efficient (Bush just said ‘reduce dependence on oil), could certainly help.

We need to acknowledge that this push for legislation and ‘legitimizing’ our activities is directly related to the success of The MoCo and THAT success stems from a number of factors. We have more disposable income. More successful people are seeking the ‘tough biker’ image. Television has found a gold mine in personalities like Jesse James, Billy Lane, OCC, Indian Larry (RIP), et al. Such adulation is bound to frighten those elements of our society that views them as a danger to ‘traditional values,’ regardless of the fact that each and every one of them, and many others, like you, Bandit, exemplify the American Dream and are self made men.

‘Bikers’ are no longer a fringe element, but with mainstreaming comes mainstream ideas of ‘social responsiblity’ which means self censorship.

Senate bill 370.02, Taking of attorneys with traps or deadfalls ispermitted. The use of United States currency as bait,however, is prohibited.

House Bill 370.03, Stuffed or mounted attorneys must have a statehealth department inspection for rabies, and vermin.

TAMPA BAY SNEAK PREVIEW OF “JESSIE’S RIDE”–Brought to you bySantiago Chopper & “Choppers for Charity”. Talk about a year full of hopes, dreams and adventures. From Bikernet’s standpoint we have more readers than ever before, we’re headed to Bonneville and I hope to publish another book this year. Hell, I have the honor to work with Hugh King and Original Productions on the next Motorcycle Mania and the best one yet.

But as a group of street warriors we are facing some wild challenges this year with the EPA, Noise Police and the NHTSA. Twice in the news below I ran releases on new NHTSA’s thoughts for the future. I did that in hopes that more riders would take the time to check the government site and respond. I always try to look as these efforts as opportunities to educate the straight world to our plights and make suggestions that force officials to think out of the box.

For instance: Twenty years ago I suggested to the DOT that they create a biker lane on freeways and interstates. Since then bicycle and HOV lanes were instituted. This could be another opportunity to promote a lane between general traffic, or the number one lane and the HOV lane for motorcycles. This would also eliminate the need for lane splitting discussions, or in a sense be a lane-splitting test.

On some Los Angeles Freeways the buffer between the HOV lanes and number one are wide enough already for motorcycles. Anything we can do to raise the awareness of motorcyclists and allow us space away from the people who cause between 70-85 percent of all motorcycle accidents will save lives. Let’s hit the news, then I’ll hit on the noise issue:

BIKERS ROLL OT SOLDIER FUNERALS– FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. – Wearing vests covered in military patches, a band of motorcyclists rolls around the country from one soldier’s funeral to another, cheering respectfully to overshadow jeers from church protesters.

They call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders, and they are more than 5,000 strong, forming to counter anti-gay protests held by the Rev. Fred Phelps at military funerals.Phelps believes American deaths in Iraq are divine punishment for a country that he says harbors homosexuals. His protesters carry signs thanking God for so-called IEDs – explosives that are a major killer of soldiers in Iraq.

The bikers shield the families of dead soldiers from the protesters, and overshadow the jeers with patriotic chants and a sea of red, white and blue flags.

“The most important thing we can do is let families know that the nation cares,” said Don Woodrick, the group’s Kentucky captain. “When a total stranger gets on a motorcycle in the middle of winter and drives 300 miles to hold a flag, that makes a powerful statement.”

At least 14 states are considering laws aimed at the funeral protesters, who at a recent memorial service at Fort Campbell wrapped themselves in upside-down American flags. They danced and sang impromptu songs peppered with vulgarities that condemned homosexuals and soldiers.

The Patriot Guard was also there, waving up a ruckus of support for the families across the street. Community members came in the freezing rain to chant “U-S-A, U-S-A” alongside them.

BIKERNET SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH STUDY–Do Larger Breasts Equal Lower Grades? Online Voters Say ‘Yes’.

An unscientific survey on a popular Web site suggests that stereotypical beliefs about women hold true in 2006, at least among Internet surfers.

WhatsMyImage.com allows members to view photos of complete strangers and then make guesses about the details of their private lives.

The Web site analyzed hundreds of votes that had been cast since May and found that there was a very strong correlation between female bra size and perceived grade point average.On average, voters guessed that “A-cup” students had GPAs that were 0.3 points higher than those of “D-cup” students.

“B-cup” and “C-cup” students were voted to have GPAs in the middle of that range, each averaging about 0.2 points higher than the “D-cup” group.

The study also found a correlation between race and grades. Specifically, voters guessed that Asian students had higher GPAs than their Caucasian and African-American counterparts by an average of more than 0.2 points (on a 4.0 scale).The site’s founders warned against interpreting the results of their survey as anything but entertainment.

“We have no reason to believe that there is an actual link between any of these attributes and grade point average,” said WhatsMyImage.com co-founder Sameer Shariff. “This analysis simply suggests that our voters may subscribe to the stereotypes reflected in its results.”

Bikernet research analysts don’t give a shit. “Our panel of doctors feel a strong attraction to boobs, no matter what the size or GPA,” said Dr. Wilburn Roach.

RED ALERT-NHTSA ANNOUNCED UPDATED HIGHWAY SAFETY PROGRAM–Open Comment PeriodThe Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) reports the National Highway TrafficSafety Administration (NHTSA) has announced its intention to update theexisting guidelines for state highway safety programs. Guideline Three:Motorcycle Safety, is one of the six guidelines facing revision.

NHTSA undergoes an amendment process every four to six years to expand itsareas of focus. NHTSA’s charter favors the promotion of highway safetyhowever, if a topic is not specifically mentioned in the safety programguidelines, NHTSA can not advocate on its behalf.

The twelve amendments to the motorcycle safety component are generated byNHTSA behind closed doors with no input from the riding community. The opencomment period affords our nation’s motorcyclists the only opportunity theywill have to voice their opinion on the potential revisions.

However, we are troubled with NHTSA’s positionwhich contends all states should have a mandatory helmet laws” says JeffHennie, MRF Vice President of Government Relations. “The US Senate voteddown a mandatory helmet measure, the Lautenberg Amendment, just last May.The resulting veto should have sent a message making it clear this is asubject NHTSA needs to stay away from” Hennie added.

“The Motorcycle RidersFoundation supports states rights and contends each one should be able todetermine the type and extent of helmet use law in their particular state.”

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation encourages all motorcyclists to read theproposed amendments and use this unique opportunity to submit clear,straightforward comments. The current submission deadline is March 13th,2006 but MRF is requesting a deadline extension to allow additional time fora complete review of these important items. ANOTHER MADD, BUT IT’S MOTORCYCLISTS AGAINST DUMB DRIVERS– I appreciate reading your bikers rights page, and now have a recommendation which I hope you would consider. At the outset of your bikers rights page you say that we must get involved in the bikers rights movement. I believe that M-A-D-D provides one good way in which every biker can get involved, and make a difference on an issue common to all of us, reducing the dangers we face on the road as the result of the dumb ass moves of auto drivers. M-A-D-D supports ABATE in its defense of our right to chose by refocusing the motorcyclist safety issue where it belongs – on the overwhelming majority of accidents and injuries caused by auto drivers ignorant of motorcycle safety issues, and the driving strategies which auto drivers must adopt for the protection of motorcyclists.

BIKERNET MARITAL COUNSELING–My wife left me…. I don’t understand. After the last child was born, she told me we had to cutback on expenses, I had to give up drinking beer. I was not a big drinkermaybe a 12 pack on weekends.

ABATE OF FLORIDA ANNOUNCES FINANCIAL IMPACT OF HELMET LAW REPEAL On February 6, 2006 James ?Doc? Reichenbach II, President of ABATE of Florida and Chairman of the Board for the National Coalition of Motorcyclists, released the following economic impact report covering the five years since Florida modified their mandatory helmet law to exclude most adult riders.

278,331 new Motorcycles at an average of $10,000 each = $2,783,310,000

Sales tax on Motorcycles at 6% = $166,998,600

Registration Fees for Motorcycles = $10,047,749

Change of title = $8,280,347

Total = $2,968,636,696

?This is almost three billion dollars in five years that has been put into the economy of the State of Florida, and this is a low figure as it doesn?t include antique motorcycle or mopeds that are licensed in Florida,? said Doc. ?Over one hundred eighty million dollars went directly into the state treasury for the general fund, and this does not include the tourist money that has increased because of Florida being a freedom of choice state. In the past five years over Two Billion five hundred thousand dollars has been spent at Bike Week and Biketoberfest.?

For the report, the motorcycle registrations were compiled from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The tax and fees came from the Florida license and registration bureau. From July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005 motorcycle registrations in Florida went from 195,306 to 473,637 which represent a total of a 143% increase.

?I hope these figures will help anyone who has heard the bad publicity that has come out of our amended law,? said Doc.

VIRGINIA GOVERNOR WARNER CREATES MOTORCYCLE ADVISORY COUNCIL Virginia?s Governor Mark R. Warner has announced the creation of the Governor’s Motorcycle Advisory Council. The group, comprised of state and local officials, state agency representatives, and motorcycle enthusiasts, will work to promote motorcycle safety, tourism, and business development in Virginia. The Council is the next step in Governor Warner’s “Motorcycle VIRGINIA!” initiative created in 2004.

“Virginia has worked to expand its tourism markets in so many areas – and motorcycle tourism is a great opportunity for us,” said Governor Warner. Additionally, as the Commonwealth grapples with the transportation challenges of the next decade, motorcyclists need to have a voice in that debate.”

Council members are appointed by the Governor and include one member of the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia as well as a representative from various state agencies and from the Virginia’s sheriffs, police chiefs, and the Board of Transportation Safety and sixteen citizen members appointed by the Governor. The Secretaries of Commerce and Trade, Public Safety, and Transportation serve as ex officio members.

Governor Warner?s first appointee to the new council was J. Thomas McGrath as a representative of the Transportation Safety Board. McGrath is the founder of the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists (VCOM), and is the Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney for Virginia.

The Governor’s Motorcycle Advisory Council will elevate the “Motorcycle Virginia” work group efforts that began in 2004. The group, comprised of state agencies involved in tourism, public safety, and transportation, has produced more than 50,000 “Watch for Motorcycles” bumpers tickers and launched a Web site featuring Virginia’s motorcycle routes, safety guidelines, and motorcycle resource links.

BOBBI HARTMANN TO JOIN NCOM-LTF The National Coalition of Motorcyclists welcomes Bobbi Hartmann of ABATE of Arizona and a member of the Arizona Lobbying Team, as the newest member of the NCOM Legislative Task Force, joining other motorcyclist rights lobbyists and legislators in defending bikers’ rights at the local, state and federal level.

“I am proud to announce that I was recently invited, and have since become,a member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Legislative Task Force,” announced Hartmann. “The LTF consists of Members who are committed to the Pursuit of Liberty and are willing, through their actions, to be leaders. LTF Members lend their expertise and experience to other MRO’s and as their schedule allows, NCOM will send them to visit other states, upon request, to assist them with their needs, and/or speak at their rally’s.”

Members of the NCOM-LTF include several legislators; Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien, South Dakota State Senator Jim Putnam, New Mexico State Rep. Rick Miera, Florida State Rep. Nancy Argenziano, West Virginia State Delegate Greg Butcher and former U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell.

Two other legislators have also been named to the NCOM-LTF; Texas State Rep. Norma ?Da Lady? Chavez and Idaho State Senator Skip Brandt. WELCOME!

OKLAHOMA VETERANS NEEDED FOR MOTORCYCLE PLATES Veterans can now apply for special motorcycle license tags in Oklahoma. The proposal was signed into law Nov. 1, but according to the Oklahoma Tax Commission, which manages special license plate production, a minimum of 100 pre-applications are required by May 1st or the OTC won’t put them into production.

The proposal, which was part of the law signed by the Governor, states “anyone honorably discharged from any branch of the United States Military” is eligible to apply for these motorcycle tags, and the proceeds will go to help fund the 45th Infantry Division Museum, one of the finest Military Museums in the country, which has had its operating budget cut in half by the state.

?Here’s some cool information,? says Tiger Mike Revere, State Coordinator of ABATE of Oklahoma and member of the NCOM Board of Directors, ?The law actually mentions ABATE of Oklahoma in the verbiage!?

The OTC has contacted ABATE to design the new veteran?s license plate.

TEXAS POKER RUNS MAY MOVE TO MEXICO Texas has said no to charity poker runs, but at least one El Paso charity has an ace up their sleeve: Ju?rez.

Members of the Vista Hills Rotary Club, who had been trying to spice up their fund-raising with poker for years but couldn’t find a legal way to do it in El Paso, came up with the idea of having a Texas Hold ?Em Poker Tournament in Ju?rez, to be hosted by its sister club in Ju?rez, the Club Rotario Ju?rez Norte.

In Austin, Sputnik, state chairman of the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association, which organizes charity poker runs, found the idea brilliant. “Oh, yeah, that would work,” he said.

Charities around the country including churches, have been cashing in on the Texas Hold ‘Em craze without much controversy. But in Texas it’s a little trickier since Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott issued an opinion in December stating that poker runs — the popular fund-raisers in which bikers pay to pick up playing cards along a route to win prizes at the final stop — amounted to illegal gambling.

Sputnik, who also serves on the NCOM Board of Directors and Legislative Task Force, said he is looking for “a way around” the attorney general’s opinion. He has brought up the idea of switching from poker to throwing darts, which is considered to be a game of skill.

In El Paso, Mando Parra, a member of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club and the chairman of the West Texas Confederation of Clubs, is looking to take his poker ride for cancer research to New Mexico, where gambling is legal. In that case, the fund-raiser would have to benefit a New Mexico charity, he said. “The El Paso charities are the ones that are going to lose,” said Parra.

HELLS ANGELS WIN MILLION DOLLAR SETTLEMENT OVER RAID Santa Clara County has agreed to pay nearly $1 million to settle a lawsuit by the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club over a 1998 police raid that resulted in three dead dogs, a torn-up sidewalk and little meaningful evidence.

The $990,000 settlement was spurred by the U.S. Supreme Court’s rejection in December of the county’s argument that sheriff’s deputies were immune from liability. Lower court judges previously had said the actions of the deputies and San Jose police officers were unreasonable. They called unnecessary the ?truckloads? of evidence the officers obtained showing that some of the homes’ occupants belonged to the club, and said the officers did nothing to avoid killing the animals.

The raids by 90 officers on the club’s San Jose headquarters and nine homes on Jan. 21, 1998, followed the August 1997 killing of a man at a strip club and the subsequent arrest for murder of the bouncer who was a Hells Angels member. The member argued the killing was in self-defense, and a jury acquitted him and another defendant on all counts in 1999.

In building their case, prosecutors attempted to show that the suspect was part of a ?criminal street gang,? which could add three years to any sentence. To prove it, they obtained search warrants to gather any evidence that demonstrated membership in the Hells Angels, including anything that had names, slogans or symbols on it. None of the members whose homes were targeted had been charged in the case.

?In the course of seizing the evidence, they destroyed a lot of property, and they kept it for 18 months,” said Karen Snell, attorney for the Hells Angels, in an interview with the San Jose Mercury News.

In executing the search warrants, officers collected clothing, paperwork, clocks, sculptures, motorcycles, a mailbox, a piece of sidewalk on which members’ names had been written and even a refrigerator door that had a Hells Angels decal affixed to it. They needed to rent storage space to house it all.

Although they had a week to plan for the raids and knew of the existence of guard dogs, including a Rottweiler, the San Jose police officers failed to do anything to find a non-lethal way of incapacitating the animals, the courts said. They shot three of them.

The cities of Santa Clara and Gilroy, whose officers also were involved in the raids, settled their cases several years ago for a total of less than $50,000. No settlement has been reached with the San Jose Police Department, which also was sued.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD: BIKE VEST PROMOTERS FULL OF HOT AIR Promoters of supposedly ?Inflatable Motorcycle Vests? have been sentenced on 30 felony counts of securities fraud and grand theft, as well as five counts of tax evasion.

John Duhamell and Toni Duhamell were formally sentenced in late October in San Bernardino County Superior Court. After they entered guilty pleas on all counts, a San Bernardino Superior Court judge sentenced John Duhamell to seven years in state prison and Toni Duhamell to four years and four months in state prison. In addition, the Duhamells were ordered to repay their more than 200 victims $5.6 million in restitution, and they were also ordered to pay $816,718 each to the Franchise Tax Board on the tax evasion charges.

The Attorney General filed a criminal complaint in September, 2005 alleging that the Duhamells stole more than $5 million from investors over the course of three years on the pretense of financing a product known as the “AirVest” – a vest worn by motorcyclists that is designed to automatically inflate when they are thrown from their bikes.

The Duhamells falsely told potential investors that Harley-Davidson, Inc. had invested heavily in the company, which led more than 200 victims to believe their investment was secure.

Instead of putting the money into the company, the Duhamells used the investors’ cash to live an extravagant lifestyle that included trips to Europe as well as the purchase of luxury homes and automobiles.

Last weekend the Easyrider Bike Show was hereand Stealth Bike Works was there. There weresome real nice bikes and for me some were overthe top with no practical purpose. All thingsconsidered it was a good show and a nice breakfrom what little winter we have had.

Here at SBW we keep working on our shovelprojects and we are looking forward to springand riding season. Winter is almost over and ithas not been as bad business wise as I hadfeared. We continue to see repeat customers andthat is a good feeling.

Starting in April, the 3rd Friday of every monthStealth Bike Works presents “Biker Night.” Wewill have food and music and we will be showingsome biker build off’s. It is going to be just atime to hang out and a chance for us to givesomething back to our customers. We have someother things in the works and we will let youknow once they are finalized.

You know to run a bike shop you really have tolove it. The hours are long, the work doesn’tend when the lights go out, you have to have apassion and love for it. I am not complainingand I would not have it any other way. I lovewhat I do and look forward to putting the key inthe door every morning. You never know what theday will bring!

IS IT FLORIDA BIKE WEEK– More and more people are referring to what has been known as Daytona Bike Week to Florida Bike Week. The reason for that is the number of people who are dis-satisfied with how they have been treated in Daytona Beach are looking at other places to stay and party in Florida.

The Orlando area is pulling very large numbers as is Miami and other places in South Florida. The good news for people who have to stay in Daytona because of business is that there should be plenty of rooms available and hopefully some lower prices.

More and more tourists are still opting to stay in the surrounding areas and going into Daytona and Daytona Beach for the things they want to see like the Harley Show and of course to visit Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona. That is going to be the BIG HIT of this year and where the action is going to be.

MAG WELCOMES A PILLAR ALERT–This is something that USDOT ought to look into. The awareness campaign has been the rider’s burden for a long time now and all the bumper stickers in the world haven’t changed it.

The latest from MAG, who are hoping that the Dept of Transport will do something to alert drivers of modern cars about the `A pillar’ blind spot in many vehicles;

The Motorcycle Action Group is delighted that the Department of Transport has finally recognized that the thickness of many modern cars’ “A” pillars poses a safety issue.

MAG has argued this point for years and resisted efforts to make bikers wear fluorescent clothing and burn headlights in daytime. MAG has long considered the conspicuity of the rider to be a “red herring” which distracts attention from the real causes of accidents.

The great missing factor in the whole SMIDSY (Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You) debate is the possibility that the rider is not in the field of vision of the motorist who pulls out.

The solution to this problem lies largely with motorists taking more care and moving their heads to eliminate blind spots but also with manufacturers whose concern for car occupants has jeopardised the safety of more vulnerable road users.

MAG are campaigning for the regulations to be amended to take account of this problem.

MAG was heavily involved in the drafting of The Government’s Motorcycling Strategy which highlights the DfTs commitment to research on “A” pillar accidents.

MAG Director of Public Affairs Trevor Baird said, “MAG is delighted to find that a view we have long advanced is being taken seriously, we shall continue to campaign for changes to regulations to save riders’ lives.”

CRAZY TIMES IN BIKERDOM–The industry couldn’t be hotter. We haven’t sold this many motorcycles in 20 years. We’ve never been played on television like this before. Imagine that, bikers are celebs. A cool bike movie was just released, and if it does well, more will follow. More events are launched daily, more products, more magazines, and more motorcycle manufacturers. It’s nuts.

On the otherhand, we’ve got noise cops and the EPA leaning on us and we’re lacking a unified voice. But I’m confident that we’ll get to the bottom of it shortly. Watch our Bikernet Radio interviews for more info in the next week. During a sizzling burrito lunch today we came up with a plan regarding the noise police. We’ll ponder it over the weekend and maybe launch it in the news next week.

Enough of the serious shit. We’re headed to U.S. Choppers tomorrow to work on the Bonne Belle, 1940, 45 cubic inch chopper. Larry Settles of Settle Motorcycle Shop finished the machine work today. Tomorrow we should be able to bolt up the front end, make the final alignment checks and begin to make a roller out of that sucker, while Departure Bike Works in Richmond, VA turns that sluggish flathead into a hot rod. We’ll bring you a report next week.

In the meantime, it’s cold so find a good woman to keep you company, fire up the heater in your shop and get ready for the summer.
