STEALTH WEATHER REPORT FROM CHARLOTTE–Around the Charlotte area riding season is popping! Bikes are on the road and there are bike nights at bars and restaurants everywhere. There are club rides every weekend and the poker runs are gearing up. Here at Stealth Bike Works we are satying steady and maybe even picking up the pace a little. This past week has been “Ape Hanger” week at SBW. All the bikes in the shop are running Apes! For me there is no cooler look, so I guess I have been in “Ape” heaven this past week.

Our two Shovelhead project bikes are nearing completion. The sheet metal is out for paint. As soon as we get it back they will be done. We are gearing up to fabricate sissy bars for the “Horse Smoke-Out in June. Chopper John has some great designs.

Things have changed a lot since this time last year. Last year we were just getting everything in place to open. Now we have our regular customers and continue to attract some new faces each week. We have added equipment and some new inventory. We are still small compared to some shops but we are growing. It is kind of cool being the “small shop.” What is cool about us being the small shop is that we have some BIG capabilities and people are starting to see that. One of the best things about SBW is the atmosphere. It will takle you back to the what you remember shops being from the past, from the Dave Mann artwork to our “old school” style and inventory. We have added one modern day item. A T.V. with VCR and DVD! Ha! Ha! Most of the time we have the T.V. loaded with biker movies and build-off’s.

HELLS ANGEL SHOOTING INVESTIGATED– Well before a Hell’s Angels elder was gunned down on the Connecticut Turnpike in West Haven Sunday, state police had been hearingwarnings that heightened tensions between motorcycle gangs could lead to violence, law enforcement sources said Monday. Known as “Bear,” Roger R. Mariani, 61, a Stratford resident and former officer of the Angels inConnecticut, died Sunday of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the state’s chief medical examiner office.

State police are considering the possibility that a quarrel between the Hell’s Angels and the rival Outlaws led to Mariani’s shooting as he and other Angels were riding south about 3:30 p.m. on the turnpike. But they are not dismissing that it could have been an incident of road rage.

According to a police source, Mariani was among more than 20 bikers driving down the highway when one of them reportedly threw a wrench at a green sport utility vehicle with Florida plates just before the shots were fired from the SUV. Mariani was able to pull over to the roadside after he was hit. Hell’s Angels member Paul Carroll, 39, of Stratford,wounded in the shooting, was treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital and released. “This is an open, active investigation,” Sgt. J. Paul Vance said Monday. “We’re looking at everything. This is a homicide. Nothing is being ruled out.”

While Vance said it was “premature” to link Mariani’s shooting to a rival gang, a law enforcement source said tensions have been brewing recently between the Hell’s Angels and Outlaws involving drug turf. Martin Warren, the northeast regional spokesman for the Outlaws, referred questions to attorney Leonard M. Crone, who has represented members of the Outlaws in the past. Crone said the Outlaws do not believe that any of their members were associated with the killing. He added that he knew of no member of the club who was contacted or interviewed by police in connection with the investigation Monday.

BIKERNET TAX WOES–At the end of the tax year the Tax Office sent an inspector to audit the books of a synagogue.

While he was checking the books he turned to the Rabbi and said, “I notice you buy a lot of candles. What do you do with the candle drippings?”

“Good question,” noted the Rabbi. “We save them up and send them back to the candle makers, and every now and then they send us a free box of candles.”

“Oh,” replied the auditor, somewhat disappointed that his unusual question had a practical answer. But on he went, in his obnoxious way.

“What about all these matzo purchases? What do you do with the crumbs?”

“Ah, yes,” replied the Rabbi, realizing that the inspector was trying to trap him with an unanswerable question.

“We collect them and send them back to the manufacturers, and every now and then they send a free box of matzo balls.

“I see,” replied the auditor, thinking hard about how he could fluster the know-it-all Rabbi.

“Well, Rabbi,” he went on, “what do you do with all the leftover foreskins from the circumcisions you perform?”

“Here, too, we do not waste,” answered the Rabbi. “What we do is save up all the foreskins and send them to the Tax Office, and about once a year they send us a complete dick like you.”

This week was incredible. I’m not kidding. It started off with a trip to Gard Hollinger’s shop (LA CHOP RODS) to check his Seminole HardRock Road House bike for Daytona. We arrived in the early evening and he was packing to roll out of town, but the bike wasn’t completed. The pipes needed to be designed and built, and the engine wasn’t in the frame. I looked at Black Market John and said, “We’re burnin’ daylight. Either we need to split and get out of his way or roll up our sleeves and get to work.” John gave me the nod that he was in for whatever and we grabbed wrenches and started bustin’ knuckles.

It was an honor working on the LA Chop Rods Daytona special. We’ll bring you a report right after Daytona. We didn’t leave until after 1:00 in the morning. The bike was completing sans electrical and the pipes, but it was a hot looking puppy.

The next day I made a run to San Clemente to discuss PATRIOT’S show, Steel Dreams, and a link to Bikernet. Hot stuff coming soon from Steel Dreams; A reality challenge like you’ve never seen before. Then I rolled to U.S. Choppers to pick up the Bonne Belle 45 flathead frame, straightened by Rick Krost, and then hit the Performance Machine back door to discuss wheels and brakes with David Zelma. Another report is coming on the Belle this week.

Okay, but that’s not all. I have a code about problems or obstacles to any goal. Fuck ’em, there’s always a right way around them. This EPA madness has gotten several motorcycle groups down and turned against one another. But there’s a solution and perhaps several. Below is an outline from SEMA, the big automotive industry group that’s made up of individuals, dealers, Hot Rod Builders and manufacturers. They are taking this platform from state to state. I’m working with a Senator in Montana to develop legislation, with the whole industry’s input, to make our sport free in Montana as a test.

Through a modicum of investigation Bikernet has also discovered that the EPA regularly opens and modifies their books and deregulates various element currently stridently regulated. We will bring you a series of reports on the progress while working with SEMA and industry leaders. We are also hoping to couple these efforts with the MRF. Check this out. Let’s hit the news, and I’ll come back later with some more info reiterating how we can fight back and keep our industry relative free.

MODIFIED CAR LEGISLATION FROM SEMA–Senator John Brueggeman, who is on the SEMA legislative counsel forwarded me this based on their custom car package. We may be able to pass similar state bills that allow all bikers to build bikes registered to the original year of the driveline, with a 20-year window, which would incorporate Evos. Your new bike would be faced with whatever the EPA requirements were 20 years ago.

Titling/Reg

The titling bill bases titling and reg on the year the body of the car most closely resembles. I think this could be adapted to motorcycles to base their titling/reg on the year the drive train or engine most closely resembles. In this line of thought a person using a single cam Evo could register it as any of the years from ’84 to’98. The same would be true of Flats, Knuckles, Shovels and Pans for their respective years of production.

The part I haven’t figured out yet is the scope of what we apply this to, for example should we have this limited to American v-twins or specifically reference Harley engines or Harley-style engines which could muddy the waters.

The nomenclature and process needs to be clear and simple for the motor vehicle agencies that administer title/reg. If we put our heads together and create a straightforward concept we may not get pushback from those agencies. SEMA has had and continues to have success with their model as it’s hard to argue against common sense.

Another issue to consider is that the SEMA bill covers cars 25 years old and older. If we went 20 years that would cover EVO’s but throw twin cams under the bus. This is another question we should discuss and the options I would suggest are:

1. 20yrs old and older
2. Year 2000 and older (or perhaps prior to year 2000) so we could include twin cams.

The state-by-state titling approach creates the understanding that Evo’s, Shovels, Pans, and Knuckles are legacy designs that shouldn’t be covered by the new regs and we’re making the concession that these bikes are not for daily transportation.

The benefit is S&S, H&L, R&R, etc can continue their current business models and the world will never be affected by our emissions.

NEW MILWAUKEE HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTOR COMPANY MUSEUM–In March of 2005, the city of Milwaukee and Harley-Davidson Motor Company signed formal agreements related to Harley-Davidson’s purchase of the Museum site at Sixth and Canal Streets near downtown Milwaukee.

In late February 2006, designs for the Museum were unveiled. Groundbreaking will take place later in the first half of 2006, following the relocation of a Milwaukee Department of Public Works facility currently located on the site.

The Museum will be completed about two years from the time construction begins and is expected to open in 2008. When completed, it is anticipated to attract an estimated 350,000 visitors annually from around the world.

The Museum will be located on a 20-acre parcel of land at the corner of Sixth and Canal Streets near downtown Milwaukee.

The total square footage of the Museum will be 130,000 sq. ft.

The Museum development will feature exhibit space as well as a restaurant, cafe, retail shop, meeting space, special events facilities, and the Company’s Archives.

The Museum development will result in an estimated 500 on-site construction jobs.

An estimated 70 full-time jobs in Museum operations will be created when the Museum construction is complete.

NRA SUES MAYOR RAY NAGIN– Fairfax, VA-The National Rifle Association (NRA ) has filed a motion for contempt against the City of New Orleans, the mayor and the acting chief of police for failure to comply with a temporary restraining order, handed down September 12, 2005, ordering an end to all illegal gun confiscations.

“With looters, rapists and other thugs running rampant in New Orleans, Ray Nagin issued an order to disarm all law-abiding citizens,” declared Wayne LaPierre, NRA executive vice president. “With no law enforcement and 911 available, he left the victims vulnerable by stripping away their only means of defending themselves and their loved ones. Now Ray Nagin thinks he’s above the law, and that’s just wrong.”

Attorneys for NRA have exhausted all efforts to cooperate with the defendants, Mayor Nagin and Chief Riley, who repeatedly ignored the court’s permanent restraining order against their illegal gun confiscations.

“Ray Nagin is a colossal disappointment,” said Chris W. Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. “During a federally declared emergency, he abused his power and abandoned the very people he was sworn to protect. He took away the victims’ freedom and their basic means of self-defense during an ill-fated and perilous time.”

The motion also includes an order that all seized firearms must be returned to their rightful owners.

BRUTE HORSEPOWER COMPETITION AT BIKE WEEK–This is Racer….I’m the night FL/XL engine instructor at the American Motorcycle Institute in Daytona. Last year we didn’t hold the “Brute Horsepower” Shootout, but it’s ON for this year. This will also be the LAST year in the old building that A.M.I. has been in since around 1990.

We’re looking for some runs around if not a little over 500 horsepower on two wheels.

Just a heads up……didn’t see it listed in the Daytona section. Next year we’ll be next door to “Destination Daytona” in our brand new 100,000 sq. ft. building with virtually new everything.

FLORIDA SPEEDING TICKET–WBBH, FL – NAPLES – A motorcyclist was arrested Monday evening for driving an estimated 160 mph while fleeing Florida Highway Patrol troopers on Alligator Alley.FHP troopers set up an aerial speed trap on the highway when Sgt. Gary Schluter spotted a westbound motorcycle traveling at an estimated 141 mph.

Schluter radioed down to ground units, which were able to pull alongside the motorcyclist, identified as 21-year-old Miguel Enrique Rodriguez of Weston, located on the east side of Alligator Alley.

Troopers say Rodriguez slowed to 25 mph, but wouldn’t stop.Another trooper who had stopped a different driver stepped out into the roadway and ordered Rodriguez to stop, but troopers say the man drove around him and took off.

Schluter continued to watch Rodriguez from the air, while FHP ground units backed off.At one point, Schluter calculated the motorcycle’s speed at 160 mph as Rodriguez passed through a construction zone.

Rodriguez got off the highway at Pine Ridge Road, and troopers on the ground were able to close the distance without alarming the suspect.Schluter saw Rodriguez pull into a gas station and troopers were able to arrest him there.Rodriguez faces charges of unlawful speed, aggravated fleeing/eluding law enforcement, reckless driving, and no valid motorcycle license. He’s being held in the Collier County Jail.

Troopers impounded the motorcycle and will begin forfeiture proceedings.

BIKERNET SPIKE INVESTIGATION–I’ve been shopping around and not coming across to many places, and I’ve turned to ebay for some chrome spikes for my 2006 Hayabusa. This guy wants 75 dollars for 6 chrome spikes that fit around the front fairing area on a Hayabusa.

I was hoping to find this same product, in chrome of course, and for a bit better of a price. I’d like to put those low profile spikes all around my bike. Here is the website of what this guy is selling so you can take a look at it and tell me if you have these or can get these for a better price!

MARK LUNSFORD READY TO ROLL WITH JESSIE’S RIDE–Santiago Chopper Specialties of Tampa Bay is set to officially present a custom chopper Trike they built in memory of Jessica Lunsford to her father, Mark Lunsford and the foundation he started in her name. Tampa – It has been a year since Mark Lunsford experienced every parent’s nightmare. The road has been long and arduous but one Mark feels he is destined to travel. Now he will have a new mode of transportation. Alan and Christine Bernard of Santiago Chopper Specialties is proudly presenting their donated Trike, aptly named “Jessie’s Ride”, during Bike Week 2006, Saturday March 4th at 12 noon.

They empathized with Mark and felt moved to help after Jessica was found. They also noticed, by the infamous hat Mark always wore, that he was into motorcycles. That is when it hit them. They could help by doing what they do best; build a custom chopper for the Jessica Marie Lunsford Foundation.

They had never met Mark before but contacted him and made the offer. He was moved by the generous donation and immediately accepted. Upon their first meeting, Alan and Mark became instant friends. It has taken approximately 5 months of many sleepless nights, but “Jessie’s Ride” is finally ready to make her national debut.

Mark intends to use the Trike to help him further his work to protect children. It is his and Santiago’s hope that the Trike will help to create a greater awareness to strengthen laws against child predators. Mark and Santiago Chopper plan to display the Trike in several major bike shows throughout the year, in addition to the cross country campaign where it is Mark’s goal to change the laws in every state.

Jessie’s Ride is much more than steel and paint; it is the result of a true labor of love and inspiration. Love, for a man who has endured the unfathomable loss of a precious child, yet who has persevered to fight for the protection of other children. BONNEVILLE 2006 BIKERNET SALT SHAKER ENGINE REPORT–Crankcases are on the way! Yep, I’ve heard that before. If they arrive this week I will send out the mock-up engine. I am working with Dan Baisley to change the valve angle so we can run 1.300 deep combustion chambers instead of 1.635. This will be much better for flame propagation and we can run 13.25:1 compression with an almost flat top piston.

This is the new combustion chamber I want to test anyway, for our standard engines. I will include a sprocket shaft with the mock-up engine. I talk to Mil Blair today and I am in line for the new fuel injection system which we will put on the Outlaw. I just finished a 40-hour weekend so right now I am going to go home at a decent hour.

YOU GOTTA BE SHITTIN’ ME–Have you ever wondered where: “You gotta be shittin’ me!” came from?Well, it just happens to have originated through the Father of our Country, way back when George Washington was crossing the Delaware River with his troops.

There were 33 (remember this number) in Washington’s boat. It was extremely dark and storming furiously and the water was tossing them about. Finally, Washington grabbed Corporal Peters (remember this name) and stationed him at the front of the boat with a lantern. He ordered him to keep swinging it, so they could see where they were heading. Corporal Peters, through driving rain and cold, continued swinging the lantern back and forth, back and forth.

Then a big gust of wind and a wave hit throwing Corporal Peters and his lantern into the Delaware. Washington and his troops searched for nearly an hour trying to find Corporal Peters, but to no avail. All of them felt terrible, for the Corporal had been one of their favorites.

Sometime later, Washington and his troops landed on the other side, wet and totally exhausted. He rallied the troops and told them that they must go on. Another hour later, one of his men said, “General, I see lights ahead.

“They trudged toward the lights and came upon a huge house. What they didn’t know, was that this was a house of ill repute hidden in the forest to serve all who came.

General Washington pounded on the door, his men crowding around him. The door swung open, and much to his surprise stood a beautiful woman. A huge smile came across her face, to see so many men standing there.

Washington was the first to speak, “Madam, I am General George Washington, and these are my men. We are tired, wet, exhausted, and desperately need warmth and comfort.”

Again, the Madam looked at all the men standing there, and with a broad smile on her face, said, “Well, General, you have come to the right place. We can surely give you warmth and comfort. How many men do you have?

” Washington replied, Well, madam, there are 32 of us without Peters.”

BIKERNET STEALTH REPORT–It is spring here in Charlotte! Yesterday the temps hit 75 and today 80! It feels great! Bikes are out on the road and people are gearing up for the riding season. Here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS we keep moving on.

SBW got our first Triumph to work on. The Triumph has “THE HORSE” written all over it. We are going to do a lot of fab work on the old boy. Chopper john can’t wait to use his new plasma cutter. He?s drawn up some wicked sissy bar designs. We should have one or two done soon. That is what I love about STEALTH BIKE WORKS, we do our own thing. Chopper John, Max and myself work real well together and we are a tight knit group. Our 1 year anniversary is fast approaching (May 10th) and I can’t believe how the time has past so quickly, but as they say, “Time flies when you are having fun!” That is what we try to do at SBW too, have some fun. It is a business but we try to make it a fun business.

Our customer base is getting stronger and growing. Word of mouth is our best advertisement and it is good to hear people tell you that their friends sent them to SBW.

We have a few things lined up for the spring and summer. Starting in April, the 3rd Friday of every month SBW will host “BIKER NIGHT.” We will have food, music of some sort and we willbe showing the Biker-Build Off videos. Just a time to relax, talk bikes and tell some tall tales. Kristophers Restaurant has invited us to participate in their bike night, Wednesday night of each month starting in April. SBW will be at the Smoke-Out June 24th and 25th. We are looking forward to being a part of this great event!

All you hear about lately is the EPA and the new laws concerning exhaust systems and custom bikes. We as bikers need to do what we can to fight this infringement of our rights. Do some research and you will be surprised who supports the EPA and their laws. Let your money do the talking whenever possible; do not support any company that supports these laws. We as bikers will survive this, we have never given in or up when it comes to our freedom to be what we are.

With that being said, it is 80 degrees outside! Do you think “THE MEANEST” would get mad if we closed the shop and went riding????

Aaron Greene of Paramount Custom Cycles took home the top prize in last years Street Chopper build off. He will be back to defend his title along with second place winner Johnny Chop and third place winner Cole Foster. The rest of the field reads like the who’s who of custom bike building.

Jim and Shaun Wubben from PB Choppers top the list of new invites for the 2006 competition; they cleaned up in 2005 at Sturgis winning the Biker/Penthouse build off, second place in the Legends Top 50 show and first and second place in the American Iron show. I was very excited to read about the Gateway Program in the Sunday editionof The Province and believe that you should be commended for your ambitiousplans designed to reduce traffic congestion and get “people and goods movingagain.” Being a resident of Surrey and with many of our members residing inthe Lower Mainland, this initiative will impact many of us greatly.

This program is very important and we feel that the government needs to lookto other forward thinking cities in the world to see what techniques theyare using to reduce the gridlock. Specifically, all over the worldmotorcycles are used as an alternate form of transportation. Motorcyclestake up less space, create less impact on our roadways and are a moreenvironmentally friendly form of transportation than the single occupantvehicle. Motorcycling is encouraged in these cities by waiving tolls onbridges and roadways, along with free parking and other incentives.

The government is willing to invest “$50 million in cycling infrastructure -the largest in the history of the province” which is commendable, but it isalso very important to recognize that not everyone is physically capable ofriding a bicycle and that is where a motorcycle or scooter comes into thepicture. The government needs to acknowledge the benefits of motorcyclesand the role that they play in reducing congestion. It’s also a great timefor them to invest in the role of motorcycles in traffic reduction byexempting motorcycles from any of the proposed tolls involved in the GatewayProgram and any other future traffic planning programs.

We would love to work with you and find out ways to make this program evenmore effective. I will look forward to hearing from you.

REMEMBER TO SECURE YOUR MOTORCYCLE AT BIKE WEEK– BIKE THEFTS SURGE It’s no secret that in the last five years, the motorcycle market has experienced phenomenal growth. Sales have doubled since 1999 and reached their highest levels in three decades. Unfortunately, going hand in hand with that has been an alarming increase in the instances of bike theft.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reports that motorcycle theft increased more than 55% from 2002 to 2003 in the U.S. and Canada. That’s one bike stolen every 9.5 minutes. Of these stolen bikes, only 25-30% were recovered.

What are the most effective means of protecting your ride? A survey conducted last spring by Opinion Research Corporation indicated what bike owners are currently doing: 88% always keep their bikes concealed in a garage or storage area when parked at home; 80% remove their keys from their parked bikes; 76% use locks; 62% park in a well-lit area and 47% use kill stitches in an attempt to prevent theft.Only 16% use alarms.

MAN WITH HIS EAR TO THE INDUSTRY– I was at the Indianapolis motorcycle vendor show last week and I met a guy “John” Covington of the TV show STEEL DREAMS. He said he knows you and we talked about how to make a buck with my custom ear plugs in the mc world. This is bigger than the mc world, it just got it start here because of loud pipes. There was 1 million sq feet of vendors which consisted of numerous motorcycles, countless parts manufactures, apparel suppliers, helmet manufactures, and you name it.

We were the only company promoting hearing protection and custom molded in ear appliances. We signed up several mc dealers/shops that will be offering the custom molded plugs in house. The guy who finished first in formula 1 auto racing is going to take it to the circuit and sponsor his car. I walked the floor and met with 3 companies that have in helmet communication systems and they have agreed to include a port for our custom molded stereo headphones.

The BMW owners group stopped by and is going to test our stuff against what ever is out there. We will win and then they are going to endorse the products. We are meeting in FL next Monday-Tuesday to license 2 products to IRONMAN. They are the BIGEAR IRONMAN swim plug and BIGEAR IRONMAN ULTIMATE CHAMPION stereo head set, which is also endorsed by the bmw owner group. How many triathlons are there???? THE BIKERNET ROGUE RULES–I have been telling people that the push to make rider education mandatory is About Money and Not Safety.Well it has again raised its ugly head.The Motorcycle Safety Foundation wants to make Rider Education Mandatory. They have been successful in many states of doing that for those under 21 years of age. Now their push is to make it Mandatory for getting motorcycle endorsements to your licenses, even if you have past rider experience or can pass the state exam.

They are also asking for it to be made MANDATORY for licensed riders to take Remedial Classes. Yep, even if you have been riding for over 50 years, like I have, they want me and you to go back to school and of course pay for that.

They want to guarantee their future and income and Have You and I Pay For It. In most places there is a cap on what can be charged for this Forced Education and if they are successful in getting that removed we are in for even more trouble. How much will we have to pay to ride our motorcycles?????

Some sad news is that ABATE and some other MROs have Rider Education Programs that they run and make money from and are also pushing for these programs. I and others hopefully will keep you informed which ones they are and suggest you do not support them.

Oh, just for the record, I became a Motorcycle Safety Instructor on 5/17/1981, and I Think that the courses are good for those who need them, but That They Should NOT BE MANDATORY.

Hopefully the Motorcycle Riders of This Country Will Let Their Elected Officials Know How They Feel About This.

BAD COP REPORT FROM FLORIDA– KISSIMMEE — A former Florida Highway Patrol captain accused of lying to have a ticket dismissed for a woman whom he had pulled over was found guilty Monday of two misdemeanors.

Sterling L. King, who was fired by the FHP last year when an investigation found inappropriate communication with the woman, faced a third-degree felony charge of official misconduct. But a five-man, one-woman jury found him guilty of the lesser charges of attempted official misconduct and false official statements, both misdemeanors.

King did not testify and did not comment after the verdict.

King had written a letter to the court asking that a ticket he wrote for Alaina Renae Edgemon be dismissed because of a case of mistaken identity. The ticket was issued to Edgemon on May 10, 2004, after King stopped her on the Central Florida GreeneWay.

“I would expect an officer to write a ticket, give you the ticket . . . offer you your choices and then done be with it. But that’s not what happened. He started asking me questions,” Edgemon testified.

Edgemon said King took condoms from her car and e-mailed her about them later.

“At that point, the conversation was by no means what one with a traffic cop should have been,” Edgemon said.

King and the woman exchanged e-mails during the next 19 weeks, according to an FHP investigation.

In June 2004, King wrote a letter to the hearing officer that handles traffic cases in Osceola. Based on that letter, the case was dismissed.

Prosecutors maintained that, by falsifying a public document to illegally obtain a benefit for Edgemon, King committed official misconduct.

King was fined $1,500 and has 30 days to appeal.

King was in charge of Orange and Osceola field operations for about a year. Before that, he was a public-information officer for several years in the Tampa-area FHP troop and transferred to Miami, where he was promoted to captain.

Brett feels strongly that there needs to be universal noise testing procedures and regulations. I agree, but the decibel levels are a strident issue. If they quiet our systems to the level of Toyotas, I believe more motorcyclists will be in danger.

PEV addressed some of his concerns above, but he made a point. What about sirens and emergency vehicles. They need to make noise or they’re in serious trouble. We do to. On the otherhand, if you blow your neighbors windows out at 2:00 a.m. with a set of open drag pipes on a 124-inch stroker, you deserve to have your ass kicked. So what is an acceptable noise level, that lets motorists know that we’re around and to watch out, yet doesn’t crack windshields. Bikernet wants to perform a series of decibel level tests, and city noise related tests, but we need some testing equipment and recording facilities. Let us know, if you can assist.

BIKERNET COUNTDOWN TO FLORIDA BIKE WEEK–The NASCAR races were in Daytona Beach this past weekend and to many that means the start of the parties. The area bars and hotels are gearing up for the increase of people coming to the area.

Bike Week is only a few weeks away and already there are things in the newspaper, radio, bike shops and bars about what is happening where and wanting you to come visit them.

Typically Bike Week is the first full week in March which actually turns into 10 days and this year is March 3rd to March 12th and draws around 500,000 people. It has continued to spread through Volusia County and now includes Orange County (Orlando) to the West and Brevard County (Cocco Beach) to the South.

They are estimating that the numbers will increase to 700,000 this year by including other areas. Orlando is having a BIG PUSH and many people are opting to go there and take the hours ride to Daytona Beach for what ever they want to see.

Cocco Beach just South of Daytona off I-95 is a big attraction that draws 20,000 nightly to the area year round. With Florida Today newspaper reporting 292 Hotels and Motels, 198 Restaurants, 5.4 Miles of Shoreline and numerous other facts it is a hot spot. They left out the part about it being a Biker Friendly area. And those that chose to go there during Bike Week will tell you it definitely is.

There are more and more people doing the trip to Miami, FT. Lauderdale and Key West. There is a lot to do in Florida and No Snow.

Within the 10 days of Bike Week it has been estimated that the Bikers spend $300 Million Dollars. No wonder the surrounding areas want a piece of the action. 90% of the motorcycles that come to Bike Week are said to be Harley-Davidson but those numbers are changing as more imports roll into the region.

It does not matter who you are, doctor, lawyer, Indian chief, male, female, RUB (Rich Urban Biker) 1% or a momma’s boy or girl. Daytona Beach and the surrounding area is PARTY TIME.

I will write weekly reports on what is going on, statistics, locations, events, parties and place you just can’t miss. Of course I will definitely be holding court at the Last Resort Bar, 5812S. Ridgewood (US1) in Port Orange and the Highlander Caf? 1821 S. Ridgewood Ave., South Daytona.

A Must Visit is Bruce Rossmeyers Daytona Harley Davidson located at I-95 and US1, Exit 273. It is being called Destination Daytona and is understandable with its on site expo, live entertainment, manufacturers displays, food and fun. The entertainment is put on by Jim Betlach so you know it is going to be good.

Heading South on US1 is the famous Ormond Strip with the Broken Spoke, Iron Horse, Boot Hill Saloon and numerous other places of interest.

I have been invited to visit Softails Saloon at 2365 International Speedway (RT. 192) in Deland. Wet T-Shirts, Exotic Dancers and Full Liquor Bar, I guess you know I won’t miss it. Always had a good time!

EXHAUST NOISE DEBATE BRISTLES– I think the first thing iS to draft a letter to H-D asking them to stay out of the situation. What we do with their product after we buy it is none of their business. I’d be happy to work something up. After all, Ford doesn’t tell you not to take a 4WD truck off road because the environment needs protection.

Then, we have to address the idea that not only have these restrictions come up before, but where do they lead? I remember a community in Cali that didn’t allow pickup trucks, nice or not, to be parked on the street or in driveways other than work times of 8-5. This is a restriction on freedom of choice, but if you drive a truck you are free to live elsewhere. So where is the argument?

Research on noise levels and contributions is okay, but what is the specific goal? Will comparing our noise to a car alarm or garbage truck or leaf blower be an excuse? How can we utilize that info as a defense? The main problem is the idea that there will be an arbitrary standard that will target specific items (motorcycles) ONLY.

The slippery slope goes from there to a place we don’t want to be, so we must awaken the non-bikers to the calamity that awaits by making a direct comparison and fighting for it. If a lawn mower makes the same noise, then we must push for quieting average Joe’s devices as well as our own. Only by making the absurdity of the notion apparent can we make headway. I have no problem with the assertion that ‘loud pipes save lives.’ Today’s auto manufacturers do all they can to insulate the driver from the noise that is coincidental with the act of driving. Add to that the stereos, cell phones, tinted windows, and visibility is diminished. How can we equate our noise to a siren, for example, and use that comparison for greater visibility/notice from distracted drivers? Statistical analysis of bike/cage accidents, and, especially, tying the increased use of motorcycles as legitimate transportation devices that are energy efficient (Bush just said ‘reduce dependence on oil), could certainly help.

We need to acknowledge that this push for legislation and ‘legitimizing’ our activities is directly related to the success of The MoCo and THAT success stems from a number of factors. We have more disposable income. More successful people are seeking the ‘tough biker’ image. Television has found a gold mine in personalities like Jesse James, Billy Lane, OCC, Indian Larry (RIP), et al. Such adulation is bound to frighten those elements of our society that views them as a danger to ‘traditional values,’ regardless of the fact that each and every one of them, and many others, like you, Bandit, exemplify the American Dream and are self made men.

‘Bikers’ are no longer a fringe element, but with mainstreaming comes mainstream ideas of ‘social responsiblity’ which means self censorship.

Senate bill 370.02, Taking of attorneys with traps or deadfalls ispermitted. The use of United States currency as bait,however, is prohibited.

House Bill 370.03, Stuffed or mounted attorneys must have a statehealth department inspection for rabies, and vermin.

SB 370.04, The willful killing of attorneys with a motorvehicle is prohibited, unless such vehicle is anambulance being driven in reverse. TAMPA BAY SNEAK PREVIEW OF “JESSIE’S RIDE”–Brought to you bySantiago Chopper & “Choppers for Charity”. TAMPA – Join Santiago Chopper of Tampa Bay in unveiling its first “Choppers for Charity” award at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s Biker Bash, Feb. 26, 2006 12-5 PM. The award, a custom chopper Trike, is being granted to Mark Lunsford of the Jessica Marie Lunsford Foundation at approximately 3 pm during a special presentation at Biker Bash. It also marks the year anniversary of her disappearance and subsequent death.**

Santiago Chopper was moved by the senseless tragedy that befell the Lunsford family. They were further inspired by the work of Mark Lunsford in making tougher laws concerning child sexual predators and wanted to help. They decided to create “Choppers for Charity”, an award program that donates a fully custom motorcycle to non-profits for use in creating greater awareness to their issues and to use in fundraising. “It is our hope that this Trike will move people to do something. Whether they call their local representative’s or they make a donation to the JML Foundation, it is our intention that this Trike will help Mark continue his work on behalf of all children,” says Alan Bernard, owner/builder at Santiago Chopper.

The Tampa Bay community is being given the chance for a sneak preview of the Trike, aptly named “Jessie’s Ride” before the rest of the world because they have supported Mark tremendously this past year.
