The UL File Is Now Open, Episode 1

It all started in the center of an odd South Dakota winter, 2022 and a hunt for a running Knucklehead engine. I found myself talking to several knowledgeable brothers in the industry and the price for Knucklehead engines climbed spectacularly. Hell, shit, piss, way beyond spectacular.

While, discussing some vintage parts with Steve Massicot at Paughco, he mentioned an old employee who needed funds and had a UL for sale. A complete bobber, although the running aspect was in question. I remembered George Christie’s classic flathead with fatbobs. We rode to the Yuma River run in the early ‘70s.

Then Steve sent me some shots of another Steve’s 1948 UL, which I later discovered is most likely a 74 cubic inch flathead. In 1948 all of the U models were 74s. The UL was the high-compression solo-twin, the U being medium compression and the US the medium compression side-car model. Many came with aluminum heads, and they were available as an add-on. There were only 970 ULs built in 1948, the last year of the big flatheads. As a comparison, over 4,000 EL Panheads were built in 1948 and almost 8,000 FLs. About the same for Knuckleheads the previous year.

The shots revealed a lot, like no front brake, however the driveline was complete, the bike was a classic from the rebuilt stock springer and custom made extra-wide highbars. I was intrigued by the classic style, and the previous owner, builder, Steve Hannah was 6’4”. It seemed to fit him is a classic David Mann sorta way. I don’t own a flathead, which also intrigued me.

Steve still restores bikes for Ron Paugh’s masterful collection. He cleaned up the stock Knucklehead frame, rebuilt the star-hubs and transmission. According to Steve Massicot, the owner didn’t like the sound of the engine and found the valves out of adjustment. He dialed it in and rode it from Carson City to Virginia City, but was still concerned and never rode it again.

As you know, I’m nuts and believe I can fix anything. Most bikers can, so I cut a deal, but UL Steve wanted cash. I robbed a bank, and the redhead and I watched the weather closely, made rough arrangements, because you never know. There seemed to be a slight opening in the waves of snow and bitter cold making a habit of rolling over Wyoming while heading north. We took a gamble and decided to peel out at 4:00 a.m. to dodge a snowy front heading into South Dakota in January.

The cracked compass said due west for 1200 miles or 18 hours. Leaving early, when it’s 20 degrees may mean it was clear, but the roads were slick and icy. We blazed out of the black hills trying to study iffy road conditions under the lingering darkness and then over the vast and unrelenting Continental Divide three times.

We have designed a short cut through Wyoming. It cuts from the northeastern corner southwest through Muddy Gap to Interstate 80 in Rawlins where it became a meandering straight shot out of Wyoming into Utah and from there into Nevada where we stopped for the night in Wendover right on the border. That night was a story into itself between sloppy casinos, bad casino restaurant help, one Wendover restaurant, a Mexican take-out joint and a Best Western Motel.

The next morning, we faced a nearly straight shot for 6 hours or 424 miles into Carson City and the Supreme Paughco Headquarters. I’ve known Ron Paugh for over 50 years. He’s one of the supreme backbones of our industry, supportive and inspirational. Last year he was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame. He’s run Paughco through all the good times and the bad and always had the precision vintage parts we needed.

Ron was bending pipes in the shop where he lives now, which is massive, but he took a break and gave us a tour. His line of parts never stops growing.

We arrived right on the dot of 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon the estimated ETA and followed Steve Massicot over to Steve Hannah’s house a couple of miles away.

Hannah is a biker to the bone. He was suspicious, had to have cash and still had the long hair and oily Levi’s he’s been wearing for 40 years. His house was more of a garage as we moved through tarps leading into the back of his home and one room full of motorcycles after another. The UL sat in the center of one dusty room with a partially finished ceiling. It was a jewel in the middle of a myriad of semi-finished projects.

We rolled it out into the hazy afternoon sun for inspection. UL Steve was sure the left case was cracked and would lead to doom. He was also confident the bike would run with a new battery and some high-test fuel. I liked the classic cut of his jib and could tell the old flathead had been built with care, but the flat black Sportster gas tank needed to be painted. I saw a couple of minor elements I would correct, but I slipped him the briefcase and we loaded the ’48 in the back of the van for the trip home.

Like most of us, the first thing we dive into is a list of improvements. I extended the rear tank mounting tabs on the Sportster tank and brazed the cracks. I worked with Jason Mook of Deadwood Custom Cycles to chase and clean the petcock threads and find a painter.

He works with a couple of guys, and one is Greg Robley in Boulder Canyon, not far away. You would think flat colors would be a breeze compared to high gloss, but that’s not the case. Greg is a painter as a hobby. He works construction at the Homestake Mine. “I’ve never been down into the caverns,” Greg said. That’s where the scientists are endeavoring to study neutrinos another break-through element in matter.

As it turns out Greg wanted me to go with gloss black, because adding the matt and lining it up with the gloss scallops was a delicate chore. He found an imperfection in the first round and was forced to paint it twice.

I’ve added a quart of Mobil One motorcycle 20-50 oil and started to kick it. I ordered a Knucklehead manual that includes the big side-valve models up to 1947 because Knucklehead were replaced by the famous Panhead line in 1948.

I started to read about adjusting the valves, which is straight-forward. I read about the timing and oil pump adjustments. Why is it that the manual says see (8) on image 68, but it doesn’t exist?

I’ll probably call Lee Clemens, who is sorta retired from Departure Bike Works and pick his brain about tuning the flathead.

I immediately wanted to replace the classic upsweeps with a two-into-one exhaust system, and I scored some parts from Paughco. I know it would make the bike run better and give it some back pressure. But the more I look at the bike, the more the upsweeps are classic and cool. I’m still grappling with that mod.

There’s a current issue hanging around my neck like a sailor’s albatross. My shop is not complete in Boulder Canyon. The UL is stuffed in a small garage in Deadwood with access to limited tools and equipment. Hell, I don’t have a milkcrate to hoist the bike onto.

I try to tell myself, “Patience my son…” The shop could be finished in three weeks.

But I don’t ever give up or give in. I continued to fill in the blanks. I went on the search for a battery. Check my battery article with Lowbrow.

https://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=15044

It took a while, but I discovered the Mighty Max 12-volt, 100 cranking amps battery for about $25 bucks. Amazing. Let’s see how it hangs. I took out Steve’s fake case and padded the Mighty Max into place and was able to finish it off. For some odd reason Steve wired the bike so the lights work even if the ignition is off. Not a great notion. Too easy to leave the lights on and drain the battery.

I may correct that, but I also wanted to match the foot pegs with a set of stock rubber pegs. I started asking guys I know about used H-D pegs. For years, with all the custom shit, the first thing guys removed from stock bikes was their stock rubber pegs and replaced them with chrome-billet shit. Then they encountered extreme vibration and looked for cool custom shit with chrome and rubber cushions. Some of the cool custom rubber shit didn’t last.

Anyway, the old, tough stock shit piled up in builders’ garages, tossed in the corner. Ebay seemed to be the source for stock shit, and I purchase two sets of pegs and one set of peg extensions. Let’s see what arrives and when.

In the next episode, I will bring you a report on the starting procedures and what we found. I might also show you what I have in mind for exhaust mods. Hang on.

Fear Rides with Motorcycling Photojournalist in WarZone

This is Photojournalist Kiran Ridley’s secondhand, 200 cc, Chinese-built motorcycle he relies on to get around in Ukraine. Second-language issues could be blamed for the Xplode name written on the side panel — something you don’t want your motorcycle to do, especially in a war zone.

From the Common Thread Team

Simple things at first about his motorcycle: a badly wobbling rear wheel and a high idle speed, along with the machine’s refusal to run without the choke engaged. As a motorcycle journalist, I am surprised the motorcycle is not known to me. It’s an odd 200 cc single-cylinder, four-stroke machine that “rides like shit — you are fighting it all the time,” he tells me.

The circumstances of how he acquired the machine are fascinating, as he tells me about a chance meeting with a heavily tattooed pizza delivery rider that led to a conversation and an opportunity to purchase the delivery rider’s second motorcycle. It took just a few calls, a meeting, and with an exchange of cash the deal was done. Ridley was mobile.

Honda CBR300R ABS 2022 : Road Test

by Kyle Smith from https://www.hagerty.com/

Picture this: You’re hanging around the Rock Store at the top of Mulholland Highway with your rental Camry the day before you fly home. The leather-clad crowd around praises the virtues of the GSXR600 chassis and the electronics package on the R1 for what seems like hours before a voice from the ether comes down and declares that, in fact, all of that sucks. Instead the holy follow the real truth of Slow Bike Fast.

This truly enlightened rider who belongs to that voice is astride a miniscule machine that looks like a sportbike that stayed in the dryer just a bit too long and has an exhaust note like a mix of an old enduro machine and the Singer your mom used to repair your jeans way back when. Is this person insane or a prophet? There’s only one way to say for sure. I took the Honda CBR300R out for a week of playing in the canyons alongside some high-horsepower (and highly capable) machines to see if it truly held up.

This 250cc-400cc market segment is now a packed class, with the KTM RC390, Yamaha R3, Kawasaki Ninja 400, and Suzuki GSX250R all competing for both attention from new riders and track rats alike. That is two very different subsets of buyers but it all boils down to similar wants and desires: Reliability, approachability, and fun factor.

Honda comes right out and calls the 300 a commuter machine in some of its press materials. It is an evolution of the CBR250R which lived from 2011 to 2015, after which the engine was upsized to the current 286cc. The non-ABS equipped model comes in at $4,899 plus $600 in destination and freight charges. Add in the well-tuned ABS, as seen on our test bike, and the price rises to just $5,099. Either trim can be had in grand prix red or matte gray metallic.

The engine is not the main reason I would recommend this bike though. It’s the chassis that gives the baby CBR the most fun character. A scant 30” seat height is the first thing that stood out when I threw my leg over the bike for the first time. My 32” inseam means that I am rarely bothered by seat heights, but the CBR’s lower seat combined with the narrowness of the chassis to feel playful to me. Riding through twists and turns was an absolute delight.

Straight line speed was not astonishing, but the Honda still moved quickly enough to be safe and fun. Unfortunately, those canyon roads were a place the CBR’s suspension really showed its pricepoint and intended use case. The fork is sprung on the soft side and the rear begs for more rebound damping.

The dash consists of a simple analog sweep tachometer and LCD display for speed, distance, and other necessary measurements. Simple and functional. A cable-pull clutch and hydraulic front brake round out the rider touchpoints.

The ready-to-ride weight comes in at just 354 pounds and it very much feels like it. The single front brake measures just 296mm diameter, with 220mm rear disc and the combination has no problem slowing the CBR. The ABS threshold is fairly high, as we had to work to get it to intervene but it cycled quickly and consistently once engaged.

(Editor’s note: I think the 320cc Yamaha R3, which I’ve ridden quite a bit, feels even lighter on its feet — Jack Baruth)

The CBR is a delight to ride just about everywhere. The only place it fell short was highway riding. Honda claims a top speed just shy of 100mph, but 70mph felt busy on the little machine and the tach needle fluttered in the top third of its range. Will it do it? Yes. If that is your main use though, the larger CBR500R is likely a better fit.

Once off the superslab we had no trouble racking up miles on the comfortable seat. The bike just was not tiring to ride like most small-displacement bikes tend to be.

The low seat height and light weight combine with smooth controls to make a very beginner-friendly package.

It’s also one that veteran riders will find playful to ride–this is the core of “Slow Bike Fast.”

The little CBR is not the perfect motorcycle, but it is a great second (or third) bike; delightful to ride, and once you have one you will likely find yourself reaching for its keys more than you would think.

EPA to Expand E15 Ethanol Fuel Sales into Summer

Following long-fought debate, the Biden Administration announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will issue a temporary waiver to allow for the summertime sale of gasoline with up to 15% ethanol (E15) to help address high fuel costs. Currently, E15 cannot be sold between June 1 and September 15 due to fuel-volatility concerns that higher blends of ethanol combined with warmer temperatures may lead to increased ground-level ozone formation and smog. The agency will review the waiver every 20 days to determine if remaining in place is justified.

Summertime sales of E15 has been a hot-button issue for years. The Biden Administration says this latest decision is based on its authority to pursue a temporary emergency action.

Ethanol, especially in higher concentrations such as E15, can cause metal corrosion and dissolve certain plastics and rubbers in older automobiles that were not constructed with ethanol-resistant materials and in certain specialty high-performance equipment installed on newer vehicles. SEMA opposes the expansion of E15 gasoline as a lack of clear labeling on gas pumps does not provide sufficient protection to guard against misfuelling.

Another Victory in Kansas: Law to Ease Titling Procedures for Antique Vehicles

Another Victory in Kansas as Governor Signs into Law Bill to Ease Titling Procedures for Antique Vehicles—Congratulations!

Another win in Kansas! Governor Laura Kelly signed into law SAN-supported legislation (H.B. 2595) to allow vehicles registered as “Antique” which are 60 years old or older the ability to forego a VIN inspection when applying for a title. The new law expands vehicles eligible for certain titling procedures by allowing Antique vehicles that are at least 60 years old needing only a bill of sale as proof of ownership and an application when applying for a title.

Prior to the new law, only antique vehicles with a model year of 1950 or earlier could forego the VIN inspection when applying for a title. Additionally, the new law recognizes that the collection and restoration of historic and classic cars is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of the United States. It will go into effect upon publication in the Kansas Register statute book.

Congratulations and thank you to those who supported this effort!

Fear Rides with Motorcycling Photojournalist in Ukraine

Editor’s Note: I discovered this story on Common Thread the ZevZilla web site. I hope they don’t mind Bikernet sharing this with our readers. You should go to their site to see Ridley’s moving photos.–Bandit

When the phone rang a couple of weeks ago, the voice on the end of the line sounded tired. Alone. A friend in need of a chat, someone in need of a familiar voice and a chance to maybe release some of the emotions from the pressure cooker inside his mind.

It’s still cold in Eastern Europe at this time of the year, temperatures still fall below freezing, and without proper riding gear the cold is greatly exaggerated, so I am concerned for his safety and welfare — and not just from the weather. We talk like this for a while more about the motorcycle and I suggest some mechanical things to check to try and improve the ride before I ask, “Are you safe?”

“I’m OK, mate,” he tells me. “I have an escape route.”

A long pause followed, signaling the start of one of the more difficult conversations I’ve had in a long while.

Duty, guilt, risk, and getting the job done with the help of a motorcycle
Working in western Ukraine, award-winning photojournalist Kiran Ridley is under immense pressure. A veteran of the pro-democracy riots in Hong Kong, with an extensive background in producing stories about a range of subjects from human rights to drug smuggling and migration issues, the mild-mannered Brit has been documenting world affairs since 1998.

Currently photographing the refugee crisis in Ukraine from the saddle of a motorcycle, Ridley gives me a chilling insight into the daily lives of both fleeing refugees and the residents of Lviv, as they prepare to face the attack they feel will inevitably come from the advancing Russian military. Younger children make camouflage nets and older people prepare defenses. He sounds emotionally torn as he talks about the will and resolve of the Ukrainian people to fight for their homes, balanced against the reality. The knowledge that once the Russians begin to pound their city with long-range artillery, destroying their infrastructure and killing their women and children, it will only be a matter of time before their amazing resolve gives out.

I learn that the greatest danger for Ridley is the checkpoints. Paranoia sweeps all rational thought aside and his press passes, cameras and images of refugees often add up to the word “spy” from nervous guards with itchy trigger fingers. Thankfully, so far, Ridley has diffused these extremely tense situations, but it’s an added pressure to also be at risk from the people he is trying to help with his images.

This danger is curiously balanced by the incredible freedom the motorcycle affords, and the way it disarms the local citizens when he arrives in their villages. It has certainly allowed him in to capture many of the more intimate images he has shared with the world, images perhaps he would never have obtained without his motorcycle. It’s also been invaluable navigating the long lines of refugees at the border checkpoints, sometimes up to 30 kilometers in length.

Ridley and I have shared intimate details of our lives over conversation at the Xposure International Photography Festival in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, the last two years, in the way travelers often do. So as humbled as I am to hear about the situation in Ukraine from my friend firsthand, it leaves me with a sense of hopelessness and powerlessness. Sitting here in my comfortable life it seems there is so little I can do. It also leaves me with the realization that without Ridley and all the other journalists working in and around Ukraine, this war is not happening. The only way we learn about the situation is from the work of these brave souls on the ground, and if they were not in Ukraine, Putin would have carried out his invasion without the world watching and we wouldn’t be able to sit here comfortably voicing our opinion about the subject.

The conversation to this point has been a couple of body blows and an uppercut, but the next part of our talk was the roundhouse that took me to my knees. Another journalist has just been targeted and killed. At Ridley’s home in Paris, his wife is caring for their three-month-old twin daughters, terrified for his safety. He’s torn between a need to tell the world the horrors Putin is inflicting on the people of Ukraine and the need to be home safe with his family. All I can do is listen, provide a friendly voice in the darkness, and let him talk of the guilt he feels, of how he can leave Ukraine any time when so many can’t. Over the phone line I can feel his pain.

It’s 1 a.m., he is cold and tired from being out past curfew, and the sirens will start again at 5 a.m., so it’s time to grab some sleep. Hopefully, tomorrow, Ridley will meet another journalist and not be alone. Then the phone line crackles, and I hear a faint “Good night, mate.”

The line goes dead, leaving me to wonder when — or if — we will talk again.

Days pass and there’s still no word from him, only my ongoing worry that he’s OK.

MRF Update: Paving the Way & Rolling Toward Washington, D.C.

BIKERS INSIDE THE BELTWAY ! THE VOICE OF BIKERS IN WASHINGTON !

The groundwork to pave the metaphorical roads to Washington D.C. and Capitol Hill took time and commitments from freedom loving motorcyclists from throughout the country. Individual attendance to Bikers Inside the Beltway, less than a month away, makes a difference in accomplishing our legislative goals.

Yes, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation is rolling toward Washington. Yes, since 2009 the MRF has hosted Bikers Inside the Beltway, a grassroots tradition orchestrated by SMROs that began with just as much determination but without a name in 1989.

The MRF has brought over a thousand motorcyclists to Washington to meet with their members of Congress with the sole mission of promoting a legislative agenda that continues to successfully become law on behalf of all street riding motorcyclists.

Those visits are effective. Members of Congress know that it is not easy for constituents to make the trip to Washington, D.C. And when constituents from a well-known organization such as the Motorcycle Riders Foundation venture to Washington to meet with their congressional delegation, members of Congress tend to listen.

Your personal visit to Congress does make a difference. Co-sponsors on legislation the MRF supported rose over 20 percent during Bikers Inside the Beltway in 2021. Numbers make a difference. Currently, there almost ninety co-sponsors on H. Res 366 – an anti-profiling resolution. By joining other freedom loving motorcyclists, you can help increase those co-sponsors so that those numbers make an even greater difference.

The MRF’s legislative agenda – beyond the three items listed below — recommended and approved by SMRO leaders at the 2021 Meeting of the Minds, is not all-inclusive.

News items during the past two weeks have repeatedly demonstrated why the following items are at the top of the MRF’s legislative agenda as we move toward Bikers Inside the Beltway:

  • Profiling: Sustain lobbying efforts for the passage of resolutions or legislation that promotes awareness and prohibition of motorcyclists profiling.
  • Renewable Fuels: Advocate for targeted changes to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Support the universal availability of approved fuel blends, containing no more than 10 percent ethanol by volume. Ensure that consumers are educated on proper fuel usage.
  • Autonomous Vehicles: Advocate and monitor any legislation or regulations related to motorcycles concerning connected and autonomous vehicles (AV) including endorsing rulemaking to set new standards specific to seeing, detecting, and properly reacting to motorcycles. Ensure motorcycles are part of all testing and development procedure.

The pandemic, and the events of January 6, 2021, did not deter the MRF. More than one-hundred motorcyclists attended the first in-person meeting in 2021 with members of Congress last May. The above items are the missing pieces of the 2021 infrastructure legislation, and they are driving the MRF’s need to return to Washington when Bikers Inside the Beltway meets on May 17.

Join us to ensure that the mission of getting our message to Congress does not fail, please consider the following:

  • Make your appointments locally or in Washington
  • Familiarize yourself with the briefing points
  • Confirm your appointment locally or in Washington
  • Virtual or in person, make notes on your meeting
  • Share your meeting notes with the MRF

Numbers do make a difference toward accomplishing the legislative goals of the MRF. All 435 members of the House of Representatives are up for reelection. Thirty-four members of the Senate are up for election. Numbers do make a difference. Like it or not, legislators tend to listen better during election years.

Paving the way for the long haul is what the MRF does to ensure that the future of motorcycling survives. It is not too late to use that “paved way” to help the numbers make a difference.

Rooms are available through the hotel direct line 703-684-5900 and use reference code MRF. And while you are there, make plans to attend a meeting of the MRF Board of Directors on May 16 at the Embassy Suites, 1900 Diagonal Road, Alexandria, VA 22314.

Bikers Inside the Beltway 2022 – The Motorcycle Riders Foundation — paving the way for the long haul and rolling toward Washington, D.C.!

Yours in Freedom,
Fred

ARIZONA LEGALIZES LANE FILTERING
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey (R) has signed Senate Bill 1273 into law on March 24, 2022, that legalizes lane “filtering” for two-wheeled motorcycles under specified conditions.

SB 1273 was sponsored by Senator Tyler Pace (R-Dist. 25), an avid motorcyclist himself, who clarified that lane filtering and lane splitting are not the same thing, and this new law will only allow for low-speed lane filtering in certain situations, like in Utah and Montana, not “lane splitting” on highways as commonly practiced in California.  It was crafted to resemble a similar lane filtering measure enacted in Utah in 2019 that was just recently extended by their state legislature for another 5 years.

According to the bill as written, amended, passed through both chambers of the State house with bipartisan support, and signed into law effective in 90 days after adjournment:

“The operator of a two-wheeled motorcycle may overtake and pass another vehicle that is stopped in the same direction of travel and in the same lane as the operator and may operate the motorcycle between lanes of traffic if the movement may be made safety and it the operator does both of the following:

1. Operates the motorcycle on a street that both:

(a) is divided into at least two adjacent traffic lanes in the same direction of travel.

(b) has a speed limit that does not exceed forty-five miles per hour.

2. Travels at a speed that does not exceed fifteen miles per hour”

Other provisions in the bill spell out the fact that, under Arizona state law, motorcycles are entitled to full use of a lane on the road. They may also ride two abreast — but no more than two can ride in this configuration across a single lane. Furthermore, motorcycles may not pass other vehicles within a single lane except in the specific situations outlined by the language above. Riding in between lanes is also not allowed by motorcycles in most situations, except in the specific circumstance outlined above.

It’s also important to note that this law specifically addresses two-wheeled motorcycles, as trikes and sidecars are prohibited from performing such maneuvers under any circumstances.

Meanwhile, similar lane filtering legislation (House Bill 2667) has passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives with overwhelming support, by a vote of 70-22 on March 22, and is currently under consideration in the State Senate.

STANDARD DRIVER’S LICENSE APPROVED FOR THREE-WHEELERS IN NEW YORK
After both the reclassification of the three-wheeled motorcycle as a three-wheeled motor vehicle and providing operator licensing requirements similar to nearly every U.S. state, residents in the state of New York can now operate 3-wheelers such as the Polaris Slingshot with a standard driver’s license.

Beginning April 20, 2022 drivers in the Empire State can drive an open-air machine with “side-by-side bucket seats, seat belts, and an automated manual transmission or manual transmission option typically found in traditional automobiles” using their standard D-class driver’s license, instead of the previously required motorcycle endorsement. The state of New York has both reclassified the three-wheeled motorcycle as a three-wheeled motor vehicle (often referred to as “autocycle”) and conferred operator licensing requirements comparable to nearly every U.S. state.

‘EXPANSIVE REMOVAL’ OF TARIFFS BENEFITS HARLEY-DAVIDSON
A deal has been made between the United Kingdom and the United States to suspend retaliatory tariffs on imported American products such as Harley-Davidson motorcycles, leading to potentially cheaper bikes.

Back in 2018, following a dispute with the European Union (of which the UK was then a part) the Trump administration imposed tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.  In response, retaliatory tariffs were imposed on US imports such as Levi jeans, whiskey and… Harley-Davidsons.

However, following a meeting between the UK and US trade officials in Washington, DC on March 22, an agreement was reached whereby the US will partially end tariffs on British steel and aluminum.

In response, the UK will suspend retaliatory measures against US products, with the “expansive removal” of tariffs taking effect in June this year.

CYCLE SALES CRASH IN WORLD’S LARGEST MOTORCYCLE MARKETPLACE
Spiraling cost of fuel prices and rural distress negatively impacted the Indian two-wheeler segment, the largest motorcycle market in the world (China is 2nd) and home to the largest manufacturer of two-wheelers, with sales last fiscal year falling sharply to pre-2012 levels.

Two-wheeler sales in India crashed to a 10-year-low, falling to 14,466,000 units in FY22, as per the latest data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), down from a high of 21,180,000 in 2019, and it was in 2011-2012 that two-wheeler sales were close to this low at 13,409,000 (India’s Financial Year is calculated as from 01-April-2021 to 31-March-2022).

Throughout the year, demand for motorcycles and scooters was impacted by moderation in rural demand and higher ownership cost amidst soaring petrol prices, which escalated in almost all months of FY22.  New motorcycle sales there are directly correlated with fuel prices, as 62% of that country’s fuel sales are consumed by the two-wheeler segment.

BRITISH BIKERS DECLARE ‘DECARBONIZATION’ POLICY; OPPOSE BANNING ICE BIKES
The British Motorcyclists Federation (BMF) have detailed three key points in their recently announced decarbonization policy; “regarding the use of internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles, the sale of ICE bikes, and the idea of electric battery technology as the only solution going forwards for motorcycles.”

Specifically, following the BMF Council meeting on April 9th, the Federation’s position “is opposed to any proposals to ban the use of motorcycles powered by internal combustion engines (ICE) while such vehicles are still capable of being run,” meaning gas is available.

Additionally, the Federation “is opposed to a ban on the sale of new ICE-powered motorcycles while there is the possibility of providing alternatives to fossil fuel and while the electric vehicle charging infrastructure does not adequately support electric motorcycles.”

The BMF’s third and final point is that it “supports a technology-neutral approach to powering new motorcycles; we do not accept that electric battery technology is the only approach.”

BMF Director, Anna Zee, said, “The use of motorcycles, however powered, rather than cars can make a valuable contribution to reducing carbon and particle emissions and congestion of course.”

ITALY INCENTIVIZES ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN NEW LAW
All over the world, governments are taking huge steps towards the incentivization and mainstream integration of sustainable, low-emission mobility.  More than ever before, alternative modes of transport which were once seen as leisure activities, i.e., cycling and electric scooters are now being integrated into the mainstream transportation framework, with infrastructure being developed to accommodate these vehicles.

The latest country to roll out some form of new incentivization program is Italy, wherein a law supporting electric vehicles (EVs) will soon be implemented, and isn’t just centered around automobiles, but includes lightweight electric vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds and e-scooters, too.  In fact, list prices could be slashed by up to 30% due to the incentives.

Mario Draghi, Italian prime minister, has signed a new Ministerial Decree which is set to finance incentives for the purchase of electric and low-carbon vehicles. The government seeks to allocate sizable resources towards the project, with 650 million Euros per year being set aside until 2024, which translates to a total of nearly two billion Euros until 2024, and a staggering 8.7 billion until 2030.

Not only will the incentivization program help to make low-emission and fully electric transport more accessible to the general public, they’ll also provide manufacturers with a much-needed boost.  Minister of Economic Development Giancarlo Giorgetti explained that the industry is going through a lot of difficulties including the pandemic, raw materials shortages occurring across the globe, as well as the raging war in Ukraine which has disrupted several economies.

STUDY IDENTIFIES EIGHT CATEGORIES OF MOTORCYCLIST
Vias, a research group from Belgium, has conducted a study into motorcyclists, from which they have determined eight categories of motorcyclist; so what type are you?

Firstly, there is the Time-Optimizer, who uses their motorcycle to minimize the time of the journey.  This comprised 11.6% of the sample.

Secondly, we have what Vias called the “Time-For-Me Seeker,” who are those riders who like to use the motorcycle to relax, get away from the family or work.  According to Vias, this category made up 18.8% of the sample.

Next up is “The Unconditional.”  According to Vias, this group made up 9.5% of the sample, and these are those riders who go out whenever, no matter the conditions, the time of day, the amount of rain – if the bike has fuel, that fuel will be used.

Moving on now to the fourth group, which Vias called the “Good-Vibe Seeker,” who are those who use their motorcycle only when the weather allows for it.  These riders ride solely for enjoyment, as well as to avoid using the car.  14.2% fit into the “Good-Vibe” category.

Now, onto group number five: the “I-Want-It-All” class.  These are the people who want the best of the best, the option that suits them and their needs perfectly.  18.2% apparently fall into this category.

The sixth group is called “Multimodal,” which is the category for people who are not solely riders, and use their motorcycle in conjunction with other forms of transport, as well as instead of a car in good weather.  These make up 11% of the sample.

“The Daily User,” is category number seven.  The Addict.  The Junkie.  The Two-Wheeled Doper.  Many of you reading this fall into this category, that makes up 7.5%.

Only one category to go… That final category, number eight, is “The Life-Long Experience,” whose members also probably fall into the “Daily User,” class.  These are the Lifers who make up 9.2%, and are the cornerstone of motorcycling, because they are the ones who — intentionally or otherwise — pass the bug on to others, and keep our wheels turning.

The Vias study was conducted using a sample of 3,000 16-years-old-and-over Belgians.

THE ATTACK of the E15 FUEL BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for April 21, 2022

Hey,

What an interesting news day. We have a devastating war going on, and Martha is working on the catering service for the next meeting of world leaders to discuss banning Russian players from joining the NFL. This distinct and delicate meeting will happen while old women and children are being annihilated on the streets of the Ukraine. Should we order caviar for our meeting buffet? Fuck.

As you scroll through the news you’ll come across two teaser reports by Bill Bish of NCOM. You’ll read that England has made it easier for Harley-Davidson to sell motorcycles. The next report discusses banning (ICE) internal combustion engines in England. “We must ride electric or we’re doomed.”

Is the world nuts or what. Let’s hit the news:

MEANWHILE AT THE MOVIES–Kawasaki Ninja Models To Be Featured In “Top Gun: Maverick”

Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell returns to the big screen, once again riding a Kawasaki Ninja.

There are few motorcycle movie scenes more iconic than Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell riding his Kawasaki Ninja GPZ 900R along the flight line at United States Navy Fighter Weapons School in Miramar, California back in 1986.

That scene helped cement Mitchell’s “Maverick” image as a TOPGUN hero. 36 years later, Maverick is not only back at TOPGUN, but back riding a Kawasaki, only today he chooses to ride the supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2™ Carbon in the new Paramount Pictures blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” opening May 27th, 2022.

“Working with the “Top Gun: Maverick” team has been amazing,” said Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., Vice President, Marketing, Chris Brull. “When we had the chance to jump onboard and see our Kawasaki Ninja motorcycles on the big screen again, we had to be involved. We know that Maverick is a dedicated Kawasaki rider and we made sure he had a full garage of Kawasaki models.”

To celebrate “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kawasaki has partnered with Paramount Consumer Products to launch limited edition t-shirts exclusively sold at participating Kawasaki dealers in the U.S.A. These t-shirts feature both the iconic Ninja GPZ 900R featured in the original Top Gun as well as the supercharged Ninja H2 Carbon. Visit your local Kawasaki dealer while supplies last.

A total of four supercharged Ninja H2 Carbon machines and restored two Ninja GPZ 900R motorcycles were provided to the “Top Gun: Maverick” production team along with some additional surprise models that may appear in Maverick’s personal hanger featured in the film.

“Top Gun: Maverick” will premiere in theaters nationwide on May 27th, 2022 and fans can now experience the breathtaking power of the world’s only supercharged production hypersport motorcycles by owning a Ninja H2™, Ninja H2 Carbon or Ninja H2™R.

Hopefully Top Gun is headed to Ukraine to take care of business.—Bandit

FOUR Morning Rituals to Start Your Day Off Right–
Establishing a regular morning routine helps you stay more focused and productive during the day. It can be as simple as making your bed, or reminding yourself of one good thing that happened the previous day. These habits will help shift your perspective to a positive one and get you prepared for the day ahead.

1. Make Your Bed!

As soon as you get up in the morning, make sure to make your bed. It may seem tempting to leave it unmade and rush to get some breakfast but the simple task of tidying your bed is attributed to boosting mental health. American author and retired Navy admiral, William H. McRaven writes in his book, “Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life,” that making your bed in the morning sets you up for success. A tidy bed is a start to a tidy life. The act may be small, but it helps kick off a chain of small successes to achieve throughout the day. 2

2. Drink a Tall Glass of Water

It’s very important to drink a tall glass of water right after you wake up as your body may be very dehydrated. We tend to lose water through the night by breathing and sweating which is why it’s so incredibly important to replenish our water intake as soon as possible. Expert opinion on how much water to drink varies but ranges from a minimum of 16 ounces to a liter. Water is very important in aiding your kidneys in flushing out toxins and also helps you achieve better skin. Including this simple task in your morning routine can make a big difference in your health and will help you stay more focused and alert throughout the day, improving productivity.

3. Do a Simple Meditation

Setting aside just 10 to 15 minutes every morning to meditate and self-reflect can have surprising benefits for both mind and body. In this modern age, we are increasingly overburdened with information and thoughts which make it very difficult for us to achieve stillness and relaxation. Our minds jump from one random thought to another, almost like a monkey jumping from branch to branch. This is a well-known concept in Buddhism commonly referred to as “monkey mind.” People often complain that they feel overwhelmed in the mornings just thinking about all the tasks ahead of them. Meditating has proven to help with this by helping you kickstart your day more peacefully. By calming the mind, you can think more clearly during the day and decrease anxiety.

Meditating has also been associated with boosted energy levels due to the release of endorphins. This natural energy boost can help productivity, without needing as much caffeine throughout the work day to sustain energy.

Simply hop into some comfortable clothes and drink a tall glass of water before finding somewhere quiet to relax. There are many techniques to help you meditate, but the simplest is to just close your eyes and breathe gently while trying not to think of anything. This is difficult to achieve at first, but that’s normal! Keep on trying for a few weeks until your mind learns to use this time to quiet down. You can try lighting a candle or your favorite incense to help you achieve this and send a signal to your brain to relax.

4. Try Dry Brushing

Practiced by the ancient cultures of the past, dry brushing has been associated with improving blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. The act of brushing or scrubbing your body helps exfoliate the skin, making it softer and giving it a youthful glow. It will also help get rid of dead skin thus helping you absorb moisturizers more effectively. Sweat and toxins will be able to leave your body more easily due to the unclogging of pores. Many people also report feeling energized after dry brushing. This is why it’s best carried out in the morning, before you hop into the shower.

The whole process should only take 5 minutes. Choose a good body brush—a firm bristle brush—and start brushing upwards from the bottom of your legs towards your heart, until you have covered your whole body. It should not hurt; if it does, make sure to stop as you may have sensitive skin. Brush as often as you like, but preferably a couple times a week. Your skin should give you a good indicator of how well it’s doing.

Incorporate these four habits to your morning, and you’ll be setting yourself up for a more productive, fulfilling day.

Bill said, ‘I didn’t sleep with my wife before we got married, did you?’

Larry replied, ‘I’m not sure, what was her maiden name?’

A little boy went up to his father and asked: ‘Dad, where did my intelligence come from?’

The father replied. ‘Well, son, you must have got it from your mother, ‘cause I still have mine.’

‘Mr. Clark, I have reviewed this case very carefully,’ the divorce Court Judge said, ‘And I’ve decided to give your wife $775 a week,’

‘That’s very fair, your honor,’ the husband said. ‘And every now and then I’ll try to send her a few bucks myself.’

ANOTHER BIDEN ANNOUNCEMENT–

Biden has announced that he will direct the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to issue an emergency waiver to allow for the sale of E15 during the summer months, as well as other actions to facilitate the sale of E15.

The American Motorcyclist Association strongly opposes these moves. The AMA fought a similar waiver under the Trump administration to allow for year-round sales of E15 and even joined a lawsuit led by the American Petroleum Institute, which successfully overturned that proposal.

None of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and ATVs in use in this country is certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to use fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol by volume. E15, which contains 15 percent ethanol, is in fact illegal to use in motorcycles, boat engines, lawn mowers, chainsaws and other outdoor power equipment products.

The planned EPA waiver is set to be finalized before summertime sales begin on June 1. E15 sales are traditionally barred between June 1 and September 15 due to the blends’ higher volatility, which contributes to smog in the warmer months. According to the White House, the EPA will also consider working with states to expand E15 availability and modifying labeling at the fuel pump.

The AMA opposes modifying labels at the pump that could potentially misinform customers. The AMA instead advocates for stronger labeling at the pump to make the potential dangers of E15 clear and concise. The inadequacy of labeling can be seen in the rise of Unleaded 88, a fuel that contains 15 percent ethanol and is deliberately mislabeled.

The AMA is asking motorcyclists nationwide to make their voices heard and send a pre-written message to President Biden and EPA Administrator Michael Regan telling them to reconsider this misguided proposal that will increase the risk of misfuelling for motorcyclists, boaters, and other small engine owners while doing little to address the increased cost of fuel.

NEWS FROM THE WRESTLING ROCK AND ROLL BIKERNET LIBRARY–

The Gypsy King continues to showcase his musical talent with a duet in the BT Sport Promo for Fury v Whyte

Fury v Whyte will take place on Saturday, April 23, and is exclusively live on BT Sport Box Office

LONDON, UK – Ahead of defending his world title belts, heavyweight champion of the world Tyson Fury has joined forces with legendary American singer-songwriter Don McLean to create a brand-new rendition of “American Pie”.

Fury, who will take on fellow Brit Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium on April 23rd live on BT Sport Box Office, famously performed “American Pie” after defeating Deontay Wilder in Fury v Wilder II in 2020. The song has since become synonymous with the boxer who is not afraid to showcase his musical talent.

The latest iteration of the song sees McLean singing the verses to “American Pie”, perfectly articulating Tyson’s comeback story before he’s joined in the chorus by the Gypsy King himself. The Morecambe-based fighter is no stranger to jumping on the mic, having previously appeared on Robbie William’s song “Bad Sharon” in 2019.

Ahead of Fury v Whyte the song will be aired on BT Sport to promote the fight and will be played in the stadium on fight night as 94,000 fans pack into Wembley stadium to witness the first all-British heavyweight world title fight for a generation.

In addition to celebrating Fury’s homecoming, the duet coincides with the 50th anniversary of ‘American Pie’ – both the album and single as well as the release of a children’s book, a documentary about the pop culture impact of the song, and a world tour which will come to the UK and Europe starting in September 2022.

Fans will be able to watch all the build-up, undercard and the main event of Fury v Whyte exclusively live on BT Sport Box Office.

THE BIKERNET OIL COUNCIL–US Democrats are engaging in epic denial on oil and gasoline prices.

Politicians around the world, including US Democrats, have opposed and threatened the oil and gas industry’s existence. Now they are denying responsibility for the consequences: higher prices.

Oops

US Democrats are trying everything imaginable to lower oil/gasoline prices except the thing that would actually work: STOP THREATENING THE EXISTENCE OF THE OIL INDUSTRY. Instead of acknowledging their key role in increasing oil prices, Dems are engaging in epic denial tactics.

For 15+ years Democratic politicians, including Joe Biden, have relentlessly attacked oil investment, oil production, and oil transport—leading to higher prices and lower security.

Instead of taking credit for their “success,” they are denying that they are anti-fossil fuels!¹

The “business decisions” denial tactic

For 15+ years Democratic politicians have pushed everything they can to threaten new oil production: net-zero, ESG, proposed bans, etc.

Now they are blaming companies for “business decisions” to refrain from threatened oil production!²

The “windfall profits” denial tactic

For 15+ years Democratic politicians have done everything they can to make new oil production unprofitable—leading to less investment.

Now they are condemning companies for not investing enough “windfall profits”!³

The “9000 leases” denial tactic

For 15+ years Dem politicians have driven up oil prices by delaying/destroying countless economically viable oil projects.

To deny responsibility they are attacking companies for not developing 9000 leases the companies judge to be economically nonviable.4

The “price gouging” denial tactic

For 15+ years Democratic politicians have driven up oil prices by attacking oil investment, oil production, and oil transport.

To deny responsibility they are calling for yet another worthless “price gouging” investigation.5

The energy crisis is simple.

Politicians around the world, including US Democrats, have restricted fossil fuel investment/production/transport on the false promise of replacement by unreliable solar/wind.

The result: higher prices and lower security.

Anti-fossil fuel politicians, please stop the denial.

BIKERS INSIDE THE BELTWAY 2022– Paving the Way & Rolling Toward Washington, D.C.

Bikers Inside the Beltway, less than a month away and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation is rolling toward Washington.

Since 2009 the MRF has brought over a thousand motorcyclists to Washington to meet with their members of Congress with the sole mission of promoting a legislative agenda that continues to successfully become law on behalf of all street riding motorcyclists.

The MRF’s legislative agenda – beyond the three items listed below — recommended and approved by SMRO leaders at the 2021 Meeting of the Minds, is not all-inclusive. The following items are at the top of the MRF’s legislative agenda as we move toward Bikers Inside the Beltway:

Profiling: Sustain lobbying efforts for the passage of resolutions or legislation that promotes awareness and prohibition of motorcyclists profiling.

Renewable Fuels: Advocate for targeted changes to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Support the universal availability of approved fuel blends, containing no more than 10 percent ethanol by volume. Ensure that consumers are educated on proper fuel usage.

Autonomous Vehicles: Advocate and monitor any legislation or regulations related to motorcycles concerning connected and autonomous vehicles (AV) including endorsing rulemaking to set new standards specific to seeing, detecting, and properly reacting to motorcycles.

To ensure that the mission of getting our message to Congress does not fail, please consider the following:

– Make your appointments locally or in Washington.
– Familiarize yourself with the briefing points.
– Confirm your appointment locally or in Washington.
– Virtual or in person, make notes on your meeting.
– Share your meeting notes with the MRF.

A meeting of the MRF Board of Directors will take place on May 16 at the Embassy Suites, 1900 Diagonal Road, Alexandria, VA 22314. Rooms are available through the hotel direct line 703-684-5900 and use reference code MRF.

The pre-event briefing and Q&A for visits to Congress at 7:00 p.m., May 16 is required for all attendees. Briefing packets and “leave behinds” will be available during the briefing.

MSRP: $1995.00, which includes EFI

ECM and extend O2 sensors, complete plug-n-play wiring harness, proprietary twist grip sensor and low fuel module.

What additional details do I need to know about this product?
This is a stand-alone fuel injection/engine management kit ONLY. The lighting and switching functions of the bike wiring is not included.

NAMZ does offer complete wiring harnesses in three different configurations, part number NCBH-01-A is the most robust with self-canceling turn signals, a combined run & turn signal front wiring option, and combined run and brake wiring functions on the rear (RED) turn signals.

The second, part number NCBH-01-B is less robust than the (A) harness because it is intended for amber front and rear turn signals ONLY.

Lastly, part number NCBH-01-C is a “bare-bones” full bike harness WITHOUT any turn signals but like the rest, provide headlight, taillight, key switch and all other basic functions to run your motorcycle.

THE BIKERNET SONG LYRICS OF THE WEEK– WISDOM SONG FOR THE WEEKEND:

“FILL HER UP” by Sting

– Album: Brand New Day (1999)
– Written by: Sting
– (feat. James Taylor)

Mobile station, where I stand
This old gas pump in my hand
The boss don’t like me
A face like a weasel
Oil on my hand
And the smell of diesel

Here comes a big shot
(Here he comes!)
From the city
(Goddamn!)
A V8 engine
She runs so pretty
(Woo!)

Fill her up, son, unleaded
I need a full tank of gas where I’m headed

Up in the front seat
A pretty red-head
We’re going to Vegas
We’re gonna get wed
So fill her up son!
Don’t be starin’!
Yeah, that’s a real diamond
She be wearin’

I’m gonna take my baby one day (yeah)
I’m gonna fill her up and head west
(That’s it)
I’m gonna find some money, all right

See those tail lights heading west
I got no money to invest
I got no prospects or education
I was lucky getting a job at this gas station

That old cash box
(That old cash box)
On the top shelf
(On the top shelf)
The boss is sleeping
(The boss is sleeping)
I’ll just help myself

Let’s consider this
As just a loan
I can sort it out
Later on the phone

I’m gonna pick my girl up tonight
I’m gonna fill her up and head west
I’m gonna show her all the bright lights
We’re gonna say we lived ‘fore we come home

And as I head through the woods on the way back
The evening sun is slanting through the pine trees real pretty
It’s like I walked into a glade of heaven
And there’s music playing
This money is cold in my hand
And a voice somewhere is saying
“Why would you wanna take that stolen thing?”
“What real happiness can it bring?”

You’re gonna fill her up with sadness
You’re gonna fill her up with shame
You’re gonna fill her up with sorrow
Before she even takes your name

You’re gonna fill her up with madness
You’re gonna fill her up with blame
You’re gonna live with no tomorrow
You’re gonna fill her up with pain

You’re gonna fill her up with darkness
You’re gonna fill her up with night
You gotta fill her up with Jesus!
You gotta fill her up with light!

You gotta fill her up with spirit!
You gotta fill her up with grace
You gotta fill her up with heaven!
You got the rest of life to face

You gotta fill her up the right way
You gotta fill her up with care
You gotta fill her up with babies
You gotta fill her up with this way

You’re gonna love that girl forever
You’re gonna fill her up for life
You’re gonna be her loving husband
She gonna be your loving wife

You’ve gotta fill her up with gladness
You gotta fill her up with joy!
You gotta fill her up with love
You gotta fill her up with love

2021 State of the Climate Report: Empirical observations show no sign of ‘climate crisis’ –

‘Snow cover stable, sea ice levels recovering, & no change in storm activity’

In his annual State of the Climate report, Ole Humlum, emeritus professor at the University of Oslo, examined detailed patterns in temperature changes in the atmosphere and oceans together with trends in climate impacts. Many of these show no significant trends and suggest that poorly understood natural cycles are involved.

And while the report finds gentle warming, there is no evidence of dramatic changes, with snow cover stable, sea ice levels recovering, and no change in storm activity.

A systematic review of climate trends and observational data by an eminent climate scientist has found no evidence to support the claim of a climate crisis.

TODAY’S HISTORY LESSON– Do you ever wonder who first thought of Masking Tape?

In the 1920s, prosperity and production changes made automobiles more affordable for the average American. And along with the ability to purchase an automobile came the desire to make one’s car stand out with custom pinstripes. However, it was difficult for paint shop workers to perfect the pinstripe because the tapes available at the time often caused issues, either coming off too soon or sticking too firmly and ruining the paint job.

Richard Drew, a 3M employee, was on a sales call with an auto shop when he heard a worker swearing; subpar tape had ruined the man’s paint job. Drew promised he would create a solution. And after two years of experimentation, he did!

In 1925, Drew successfully created Scotch Brand Masking Tape, which adhered strongly but came off easily so as not to ruin a worker’s paint job. Drew’s masking tape was quickly adopted and remains a staple tool in many industries today.

AND NOW FROM THE BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER–Brain Regeneration Is Real: This Is How to Do It

Once considered impossible, brain recovery is now a well-studied phenomenon

Have you ever wished you could regenerate those brain cells you sacrificed in college? Do you fear that your aging brain is in a perpetual state of decline? Medical science is being rewritten to show that we can repair our brain and it’s something anyone can do.

It’s a commonly held misconception that the brain is beyond repair. Even the medical establishment has asserted that once we kill brain cells, they are gone forever. The fact is, the brain can repair itself, and as science is now proving, there is a real benefit to simple practices that can help keep our brains sharp and elastic throughout our lifetime.

Rewriting the Story of Brain Health

The field of cognitive neuroscience is relatively new—only around 100 years old—so it’s no surprise that we are constantly arriving at a newer and better understanding of how the neural circuitry of the human brain supports overall brain functioning.

For most of those 100 years, it was believed that once damaged, the brain couldn’t regenerate. Brain cells were finite, and any loss or injury would be suffered as a deficiency for the rest of that person’s life. This created a false belief that the brain is essentially in a perpetual state of decline.

Although compelling evidence to the contrary was presented as early as 1960, the medical dogma was (and is) slow to change. It wasn’t until the 1980s when Fernando Nottebohm’s research at Rockefeller University clearly indicated that neurogenesis—production of new nerve cells, aka neurons—was taking place in the adult vertebrate brain.

The next big step in this scientific evolution would take more than 30 years. However, the pace of our understanding of how the brain is wired was about to take a quantum leap.

Our Elastic Brain

The growth of new neurons in an adult, mammalian brain was first seen in 1992, when scientists isolated neural stem cells from mice in a Petri dish. This regeneration was then replicated thousands of times in a variety of published studies over the next 25 years.

It’s now accepted in the medical scientific community that the adult brain is capable of growing new neurons and glial cells, something previously disbelieved by the medical establishment. The brain is now considered to be resilient, pliable—plastic.

The term neuroplasticity refers to the ability of the brain to “rewire” itself through the practice of the desired skill. It’s the combination of new cells and new learning that creates this magic. When fresh nerve cells are well-stimulated (i.e., trained through specific learning exercises), they make new connections. In other words, they become healthy brain cells that contribute to learning and the development of new skills.

Just like the muscles of the body, when the brain is well-nourished and stimulated through proper exercise, it heals and grows. And with proper care and feeding, this amazing brain regeneration can occur throughout life.

To help make this a “no-brainer,” GreenMedInfo has compiled a simple list of ways you can safeguard brain health, stimulate new brain cell growth, and even heal the brain.

Get Lots of Physical Exercise

When you hear the phrase “train your brain,” you probably don’t think of lifting weights. Turns out, physical exercise is one of the best things you can do for your body and your brain.

The brain benefits of exercise are two-fold. First, the brain is a voracious consumer of glucose and oxygen, with no ability to store excess for later use. A continual supply of these nutrients is needed to maintain optimal functioning.

Physical exercise increases the blood flow to the brain, delivering a boost of fresh oxygen and glucose to hungry brain cells. A 2014 study showed that just 30 minutes of moderate cardio was enough to boost cognitive functioning in adult brains of all ages.

But the benefits don’t stop there. Exercise is believed to stimulate hippocampal neurogenesis: new cell growth in the region of the brain associated with long-term memory and emotions. Healthy cell growth in this region is important to the aging brain and believed to help prevent cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Use Stress Reduction Techniques

Our modern world runs on stress, so the need to unwind is easy to understand. What you might not be aware of, is just how damaging continual immersion in the fight-or-flight hormones of stress can be to your brain.

Stress is one of the top factors in age-related cognitive decline. This makes engaging in regularly scheduled leisure activities not just a fun thing to do, but an important step toward ensuring optimal brain health.

You don’t need to look far to find ways to de-stress. Let your interests guide you. The key to picking brain-healthy pastimes is to avoid passive activities such as watching TV and instead choose stimulating hobbies that engage the brain through patterns, puzzles, and problem-solving.

A 2011 study published in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry found that activities such as playing games, reading books, and crafts like quilting and knitting reduced rates of cognitive impairment by up to 50 percent.

Engaging with art also ranks high on the list of brain-healthy hobbies. Studies prove that once again, it isn’t enough to be a passive observer. To get the brain boost, we must engage.

In a German study reported in the journal PLOS One, researchers studied two groups: a group that observed art, and a group that produced art. The study concluded that compared to those who observed art, the art producers demonstrated increased interactivity between the frontal and parietal cortices of the brain. This increased brain connectivity translates to enhanced psychological resilience in the group of art producers. In other words, their ability to resist the negative effects of stress improved.

Looking for a more low-key way to unwind? How about playing beautiful music or sitting in quiet contemplation? Meditation has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and even build resistance to feelings of anxiety and depression. And while listening to music may seem like a passive activity, research suggests that the act of listening to musical patterns facilitates brain neurogenesis.

Both meditation and listening to music affect the secretion of key hormones that enhance brain plasticity, thus changing the very way we respond to stress. Talk about good medicine!

Employ Continuous Learning

Aging is often associated with cognitive decline, both in research and anecdotal evidence. However, a growing body of literature shows that retaining a sharp, lucid brain means never retiring our critical thinking skills.

The need to continually challenge and expand our thinking was demonstrated in the aforementioned 2011 study published in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry. In this study, the leisure time activities of a group of older adults (ages 70 to 89) were monitored for effect on mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

The study determined that the level of complexity of the activity was key to its effectiveness at preventing MCI. Working with computers, reading books, and activities associated with patterns and problem-solving contributed to a significant decrease in the odds of developing MCI. Less stimulating activities showed no statistical effect. This stresses the importance of feeling challenged and stimulated by the activities we pursue as we age.

These findings were reinforced by a 2014 study of nearly 3,000 volunteers, spanning more than a decade. This study examined the potential long-term benefit of cognitive training in older adults. Results showed that participants demonstrated enhanced brain processing speed and reasoning skills for up to 10 years after the training was completed.

These tangible brain benefits spilled over into daily life and were measured in the participant’s ability to complete normal daily tasks, such as personal finances, meal preparation, and personal care routines. The study revealed that stimulating environments help increase the complexity of the brain.

MORE FROM THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION–There is no doubt that next month during “Bikers Insider the Beltway” self-driving cars will be a major topic of discussion!

During every Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) presentation around the country, we lay out our agenda, which includes concerns over the deployment of self-driving or autonomous vehicles. One point that is hammered home is that these vehicles are on the roads right now and bikers should be aware of that fact. Most people understand this, but just in case, a recent story from San Francisco might open some eyes.

Last week a self-driving car was pulled over by police, and NO ONE WAS INSIDE. The vehicle was pulled over for operating without its headlights on, no doubt a safety concern. Yet after the police officer returned to his patrol car to confer with his partner, the self-driving car took off and fled before being pulled over again.

While it’s hard not to laugh at the idea of a car with no driver fleeing the police, it does raise a major issue the MRF has been worried about, the lack of oversight and rush to deploy this new technology without proper oversight. Specifically, the MRF has pressed lawmakers to require these auto manufacturers attest that their technology can read, respond, and react to all roadway users and more specifically that motorcyclists are accounted for.

Some in Washington D.C. seem to understand, Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently said about the deployment of this technology “We essentially have the Wild West on our roads right now.” Adding, “It is a disaster waiting to happen.”

There is no doubt that next month during “Bikers Insider the Beltway” self-driving cars will be a major topic of discussion!

As always, Ride Safe and Ride Free.

REPORT FROM THE CENTER FOR INDUSTRIAL PROGRESS–Health & safety standards

The third aspect of establishing the right standards of health and safety is “economically desirable.”

What are the economic consequences?

Part of looking at the full context involves asking whether a policy aimed at promoting human health and safety actually has negative economic consequences that do more harm than good to human health and safety.

Imagine if somebody had said in the 1800s, for example, that people shouldn’t be allowed to use coal to run their stoves to cook their food and heat their homes because it creates a lot of smoke, which has a negative health impact, and instead mandated cleaner coal technologies that simply weren’t affordable at that point in time. Such a mandate would effectively ban the use of coal altogether.

While that would protect people from one threat to health, it would also eliminate the positive consequences to health that come from using coal—namely, keeping warm and having a steady supply of cooked food. And those positives were far, far more positive than the negatives were negative.

Of course, we want to improve over time—and we do, using technology and using the right policy.

For example, eventually we progressed to where we could economically gain the benefits that come from powering our homes with coal without the harms of filling our homes with coal smoke.

But that has to happen gradually. At any given time, it is wrong to restrict energy or anything else that’s fundamentally vital for human beings to a degree where it does economic damage. If everything has to be perfect in order to be used, then this will prevent people from improving their lives.

Who decides?

And who should decide what these standards are? In general, it makes sense for the people directly affected—who need energy, who need to protect themselves from endangerment—to have control over those standards, whether that be at the state level or the local level.

It’s very questionable to have all of these things decided on a national level when the people are affected by them locally in very different ways, for all sorts of economic and geographic reasons.

For example, a certain amount of car emissions may cause smog in Los Angeles due to its unique topography whereas in another area that threat doesn’t exist at all. It doesn’t make sense for both of them to have the same emission levels.

In general, decision-making should be local. But the key is no matter where those decisions are made, achieving freedom from endangerment requires that our decisions be reasonable and equitable, scientifically verifiable, and economically desirable.

187 CUSTOM CYCLES TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT– “Adulting” is finally catching up with Richard Gadson.

The busy motorcycle drag racing rider/tuner is one-by-one cutting back on his dragstrip duties to focus on business and family.

Last week Gadson announced that Jordan Angelo would be riding the famous, Brad Mummert-owned, old school GS, nitrous Pro Street bike. And now Gadson says that he will have to miss the All-Harley World Shootout race in Fayetteville this coming weekend.

It was big news when Gadson announced he would go Bagger drag racing with Live Oak, California-based V-Twin powerhouse 187 Custom Cycles, and his Fayetteville replacement is every bit as newsworthy—veteran drag racing superstar Chip Ellis.

“I was trying to think of someone else who could ride a hand-clutch bike and help tune, and I thought of Chip Ellis,” said Gadson.

“I felt terrible telling Pat and Crystal (187 owner/builder/tuner Patrick Lynch and his wife/rider Crystal Lynch) that I wouldn’t be able to go to Fayetteville. They’ve been so excited about this race. But when I told them I’d already talked to Chip, Crystal lit up. She said ‘I’ve always wanted to work with Chip!’”

“We look at Richard as family, and we need to do what’s necessary,” said Patrick. “Crystal and I are grateful that we can help Richard in a time of need and still have a high quality rider during his time off.”

Ellis piloted the first 8-second, all-motor Harley streetbike when he rode for George Bryce and Star Racing back in the mid 2000s.

“We ran all the AHDRA races back then,” said Ellis. “That was when we were racing with S&S and we had a lot of fast Harley’s. We also had 124 Challenge bikes, and I went 9.30 on one of those things.”

Way back in the AMA/Prostar days, Ellis hooked up with Coby Adams of Adams Performance to race a Kawasaki V-Twin in the Hot Rod Cruiser class that was sponsored by Yamaha’s Star brand. Politics of the day being what they were, the quick Kawasaki eventually had a whopping 100 pounds added to slow the combination down against the Yamahas.

Ellis had a stellar NHRA Pro Stock career with Bryce and S&S Cycle’s George Smith and their G2 (G-Squared) brand, and was personally responsible for helping G2’s customers get acclimated to their new Buells back when those bikes first hit the NHRA. He’s also ridden for Vance & Hines, Harry Lartigue, Junior Pippin, White Alligator Racing, and most recently Matt Smith.

He’s never let his streetbike clutch hand get rusty, currently lapping a Superstock Kawasaki ZX14. “I’m really looking forward to racing these Baggers and see what this old man can still do,” said Ellis. He’ll be riding in Superstock and Pro Bagger while Crystal focuses on Eliminator classes.

For now, this is a one-race only deal, as Gadson hopes to be caught up with off-track responsibilities in time for the May 27-28 Junior Pippin Southern Nationals at Silver Dollar Motorsports Park in Reynolds, Georgia. “That gives me a month to keep doing what I’m doing and working really hard,” said Gadson, who has recently stepped up his tow truck driving game. “I’m doing exceptionally well and I just don’t want to stop. I’ve got to put the same energy into this that I’ve put into racing.”

Meanwhile, Ellis and the Lynch’s will be squeezing every bit of energy they can out of their Fuelab, Worldwide Bearings, GRC Crankshafts, and M2 Shocks equipped 187 Custom Cycle Baggers.

EPA to Expand E15 Ethanol Fuel Sales into Summer–

Under the Trump Administration, the EPA issued a rule to permanently allow year-round sale of E15; however, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia found this rule unlawful and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider the appeal.

ANOTHER QUOTE of the WEEK–

“You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”
– Anonymous

This quote is a modernized variation of a passage Victor Hugo wrote in his 1845 essay “Villemain:” :

“You have enemies? Why, it is the story of every man who has done a great deed or created a new idea. It is the cloud which thunders around everything that shines. Fame must have enemies, as light must have gnats. Do not bother yourself about it; disdain. Keep your mind serene as you keep your life clear.” – Victor Hugo

Beware of E15 Biofuel When You Pump Up Your Powersports Vehicle–

The Biden administration is calling for increased use of E15 biofuel, using a 15 percent ethanol blend, to be sold this summer in an effort to ease prices at gas pumps. But that move threatens to put powersports engines at risk of reduced power, stalling, hesitation, and, in some cases, costly or catastrophic engine failure.

“Many consumers remain confused about which fuels are appropriate for use in their vehicles and E15 should be avoided at all cost when it comes to powersports products,” said Scott Schloegel, senior vice president at the MIC Government Relations Office. “Increasing the sale and availability of E15 increases the possibility of misfueling. Using E15 in motorcycles and off-highway recreational vehicles is prohibited under federal law by the Environmental Protection Agency because of increased emissions and the potential for engine damage. And the use of E15 can void vehicle warranties.”

Due in part to its tendency to evaporate quickly in warmer temperatures and contribute to smog, the sale of E15 is usually banned in many parts of the country from June to September and may only be used in 2001 and newer cars and trucks. It’s available at about 2,300 fueling stations, according to the Department of Energy, but President Biden said the U.S. will invest $100 million in biofuel infrastructure to expand E15 production. According to the White House, at current prices, E15 can save an average of 10 cents per gallon compared to traditional gasoline.

The EPA is expected to issue an emergency waiver in early June to allow E15 use for the summer.
