Indian Larry Tribute
By Bikernet Contributor TBear |
Indian Larry kicked off life in April of 1949, a good year for bikes. The Harley Panhead and Indian Chiefs ruled American highways. In the tiny Upstate, NY town of Cornwall, in the Hudson River Valley, a future legend in the Art of choppers was born. A few years later, the family moved a town over to New Windsor, where Larry's love for Motorcycles began.
Larry was fascinated with the idea of motorized bikes. His first “Chopper”creation was built from his younger sister Tina's little tricycle, by adding an engine from an old lawn mower, a set of ape hanger handlebars and riding it around his neighborhood while standing on the rear step. His curious mind was never satisfied. Many people don't know the true story of how Larry lost a finger. He decided to build a better skyrocket for the 4th of July and blew it off, while constructing his prototype in the basement of his family's home.
Later, Larry laid down metal flake and his initial MC work was handle in the back yard shed, belonging to his life long friend Ted Doering. That wooden shed of Ted's eventually grew to be Ted's V-Twin Cycle parts.
Larry grew up moved to NYC. He was an artist and wanted to be a part of “the scene” and NYC's Greenwich Village was the place to be in the late '60s and early '70s for someone with Larry's talent and vision. Hippies, Bohemians and all other types of free spirited individuals flocked to Greenwich during a time when creative juices were free to overflow. But Larry was never a follower. He also didn't want to be a leader, he just wanted to be Larry.
Larry thought that a motorcycle could and should be something more than just basic transportation. His first photo feature was published in the old Iron Horse Magazine. Issue # 70 November 1987. It was of his chopped 1950 Indian Chief. I remember the bike well. It had a Cerianni Road Race front end and flames painted on one side of the gas tank and scallops on the other. Larry, not to be mistaken for a hippie, sported a greaser style haircut and only had one tattoo at the time. If memory serves, it was a Harley flaming skull.
Larry and a few friends, Paul Cox, Steg and Frank, banded together wrenching and artistic skills and opened a motorcycle shop on NYC's Lower East Side called Psycho Cycles in the early '90s. The shop moved to Rivington St. then to it's current location at 151 N. 14 St. which became Gasoline Alley in Williamsburg Brooklyn's industrial district. It is now named Indian Larry Enterprises.
In 2001, Indian Larry was invited to ride to Sturgis and set up at the Camel Road House with Jesse James and Chopper Dave, which was filmed for the Discovery Channel's Motorcycle Mania. Larry was a natural character having been in movies and TV commercials before hand. His glowing genuine personality quickly attracted the attention of producer Hugh King.
Mr. King knew a good thing when he saw it so Larry was asked to participate in his new Discovery show “The Great Biker Build Off” series. Anyone who enjoyed watching the show witnessed what Larry was all about.
Ultimately Larry was pitted against his good friend Billy Lane, of Choppers Inc., in a build off. At the final public judging of the bikes, Larry was deemed to be the winner. In his moment of triumph, Larry had the class to announce to the crowd and to the whole world that both he and Billy should share equally in the first place glory. Both bikes were an honest expression of the builder's art and skills, and it wasn't about which bike was the best. Both Larry and Billy and their crews put their hearts and souls into their respective bikes. That's the kind of person Larry was.
Larry was invited to be a guest on the Regis Philbin show and also did his famous daredevil stunts during David Letterman's Late Night show.
Larry went on to do a few more shows for the Discovery Channel's Biker Build Off series. He was featured on the cover of The Horse/BackStreet Choppers Magazine numerous times as well as Easyriders and just about every big time motorcycle magazine from as far away as Japan and Finland.
It was during the weekend last of August 2004 that Larry finished his latest and most spectacular creation, the Chain of Mystery bike for another Biker Build Off. With Larry in the lead riding the bike, that he and his talented crew built in just 10 days, they rode from NYC to the Liquid Steel show in Charlotte, NC.
At the show on Saturday, Larry entertained a crowd of 8,000 fans by performing his famous stunt show. After thrilling the crowd by riding through a Ring of Fire on his bike, He got on his personal ride, the Grease Monkey and did just one more stunt to please the crowd. He stood up on the seat and surfed the bike down the track. The bike slowed down and Larry was thrown. He suffered a severe head injury as a result and passed away in the hospital the next night surrounded by his wife and friends.
Larry left us all too soon. He rode free with the wind in his hair and the sun on his face. Larry was the kind of person that wanted every one around him to be happy. He didn't have to perform that last stunt. He just did it to give pleasure to all the people who came out for the show. People who knew him best, knew what a good genuine person he was. Builders who shared Larry's vision will look to his example for years to come. The people who loved him and knew him on an every day basis will miss his smile and warmth the most. The entire world has lost one of nature's noblemen.

SALT LAKE CITY WITHDRAWS HELMET PROPOSAL– Through the combined efforts of bikers across the country who took time to write, call and e-mail Mayor Rocky Anderson to oppose a Salt Lake City, Utah city ordinance requiring helmet use by all motorcyclists and bicyclists within the city, the proposed law has been withdrawn and the mayor’s office has responded that they have “Abandoned the proposal, due to the immense amount of calls and e-mails both from local motorcyclists and motorcyclists nationwide. We are now looking into ways to better enforce the helmet law already in existence, (for riders 18 years old and under) and require the same for bicyclists and scooters.”
“Now if that isn’t proof that combined, our voices are heard, and being pro-active in the early stages of such a proposal, I don’t know what is,” exclaimed Bill Evans of ABATE of Utah. “Utah thanks all of you who responded.”

Preparing for the V-Twin Expo plus deluged with orders, a good thing. I spoke with Rick from US Choppers about the ASSALT FRAME.We covered the following points: Rear axle stays- Solid steel Billet (for weight) rather than steel plate. Lower frame rails- 1 1/4 inch diameter (machined to accept fillers for variable weight balancing). Head tube- Solid with press in bearings rather than cheaper press in cup type head tube that could possibly rotate. Head tube with fork stop machined as one piece. I have two versions of this that I am sending Rick. Also the fork stop will be at the top rather than the bottom with limited turn radius.Rake at 34 degrees for self centering. TRUE TRAIL should be at 3 – 3 1/2 inches, this will make handling lazy and slow. Lower TRUE TRAIL would have quick steering, higher about 5 inches would require a lot of effort. A TRUE-STEER turning stabilizer will also an addition as used on “SALT SHAKER.” We covered rider position and handle bars position, 5-10 degrees back no bends. Arms should be extended with a slight bend too limit turn radius and to over steer. It will be a must for Val to do a fitment for fuel tank configuration, etc. Be Cool INCONVENIENT TRUTH– Al Gore is a punk. If you want to see a good movie try “Little Miss Sunshine.”Ask the California citrus growers about global warming. Please stay on the subject of motorcycles. I like Bikernet. Below is some information about the bill, and some talking points you may want to use in your correspondence: HB1808 (Patron – Delegate Poisson) – Allows motorcyclists to ride two abreast in a single traffic lane. http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?071+ful+HB1808 Talking Points: Please email as many Delegates as possible, but at the very least, email YOUR Delegate. Having said that – we are requesting that you NOT contact Delegate Ebbin. Delegate Ebbin been our opponent in the past, but has agreed to vote with us on this bill and has strongly requested that he not receive a bunch of emails requesting him to do so. Don’t know who your Delegate is? Find him/her here http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/main?openform Don’t know the contact info for your Delegate? Find your Delegate on the list and click the name here http://leg1.state.va.us/071/mbr/MBR.HTM Let’s make sure our Representatives know what we want – write as soon as possible and spread the word!! No out of state action requested. FYI only: Well, the 2007 Legislative Session is underway and we’ve already had bills heard and voted on in Committee! Bernie is in Richmond at the Capitol and called to tell me that HB1808 (Patron – Delegate Poisson – Allows motorcyclists to ride two abreast in a single traffic lane) and HB2177 (Patron – Delegate BaCote – Makes minor changes to the Motorcycle licensing procedures) have made it out of the House Transportation Committee. These bills went to committee pretty quickly with no real chance to send an advance warning to you. As other bills are assigned committee hearing dates, you’ll be receiving an alert to write our Delegates asking for support. We have a short session this year, so things will likely happen pretty quickly. I promise to do my best to get the information to you as quickly as possible, and I know you will take action as quickly as possible. Let’s make this a legislative session to remember! –Penny Adams “Government is too big and too important to be left to the politicians.” Chester Bowles (1901 – 1986) “Somebody has to do something, and it’s just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us.” Jerry Garcia, (of the Grateful Dead) THE OTHER DONNIE SMITH SHOW HIGH SCHOOL REPORTS IN–We have been real fortunate to have Dennis from AnokaPower Hammer on board to help us hand craft all thesheet metal on this build. He has donated the use ofone of his power hammers and an English wheel to theclass until we are done with the bike..Thanks Dennis! We also have a wicked new springer donated by ChadPearson of Pearson customs. He hand fabricated thespringer to fit the bike and also made us a custom setof brass clip-on handlebar clamps. This bike has alow fat mean look which look great with these one-of-a-kind new bars. Other sponsors such as Larry Middletonof Bikers Choice helped us with a big donation of manyof the odds and ends we were in need of as well asGoblin Millworx with the magneto and Solutionsmachining with one of them beautiful magneto covers. Avon was kind enough to get us some tires and Squiggywho has been a huge help since last years build atDumdAssBiker.com came through with a tranny and beltdrive for us as well as many other needed parts. Finally Chris at Leatherneck Motorsports just sent usa nice box of parts we needed as well as the raw pipepieces from Klock Werks thanks guys! Althoughdonations have been extremely hard to come by thisyear we must really thank all those who are keepingthis dream alive by donating to the cause. A bigthanks to Sucker Punch as always for the wicked new250 tire meathook frame and wheels, they have beenbehind me since I first started this over 5 years ago. Our ’58 Panhead build has been mocked up tore down andis off to paint and we hope to have this bike apartfor paint by the end of the month. Thanks again toBandit for his support with the publicity and toanyone else we may have forgot..trust me we appreciateall you have done for us. This is changing young livesin so many ways and has been approved by the schoolboard for next year to be a stand alone class (nolonger just an after school club), that the kids canfind in the course guide and register for!!! We aremaking a difference and this milestone is a bigaccomplishment! Anyone interested in helping us thisyear or next year or any year with anything pleasecontact me Kevin “TEACH” Baas atbaasmetalcraft@yahoo.com. One last note there is a picture of last years bikeminus a motor and tranny…this roller is for sale asyou see it for $9,000.00 OBO. We needed to reuse themotor after our attempts to get a new mill for thisyears build were unsuccessfull. This roller wasfeatured in many magazines last year and needs to besold to help fund the class, the money is used to buytools supplies and equipment for the shop. –Kevin Baas AVON TIRE TECH QUESTION OF THE WEEK–What about tubes in tubeless applications? I know riders who run tubes in all tires, tubeless or not, for safety reasons.–BANDIT If you run a tube in a tire that is designed to be run tubeless this can generate more heat as it is just adding another layer into the mix and this can cause the tire to wear out prematurely. The whole idea of a tubeless tire is to avoid rapid deflation. There is a liner in a tubeless tire which when penetrated, wraps itself around the nail or rock or whatever has penetrated the tire. This tends to make for a very slow deflation. For example, (you can even do this in a bar and win money – bet someone you can stick a pin in a balloon and it won’t delate) take a deflated balloon and put a small square of duct tape on a section of the balloon. Now inflate the balloon and stick a pin through the duct tape square. The balloon doesn’t deflate. Now if you have a tube type rim with a tubeless tire then you do need to run a tube in the tire. –Sukoshi Fahey (Ms.) S&S FIRST TO OBTAIN EPA ENGINE CERTIFICATION– S&S Cycle, Inc. has successfully procured EPA Certification on all three of its V-Series engine families, becoming the first motorcycle engine manufacturer to produce pre-certified EPA compliant engines for use by individuals and custom bike builders. By using motors that are pre-certified to meet emissions regulations, individuals and builders can now build EPA compliant motorcycles without having to go through the complicated and costly emissions testing procedures themselves, thus allowing small volume manufacturers to build and sell as many custom motorcycles as they want to, and individuals can now own, ride and sell them without prior restrictions as long as the engine package is not altered in any way that increases exhaust emissions. Under EPA regulations issued in 2003, custom bike builders are limited to building only 24 non-compliant motorcycles per model year, and individuals are allowed to own only one EPA exempt kit bike in their lifetime. But following a year of successful efforts between the EPA and industry and consumer groups, the “Certification Procedure for Highway Motorcycle Engines” EPA letter of guidance dated July 25, 2006 CISD-06-15 (MC), now allows builders of aftermarket engines to provide EPA-compliant engine packages to individuals, dealers and small volume motorcycle manufacturers (<3,000 annual units, excluding California), thus circumventing the strict regulations applied to non-EPA compliant motorcycles. Therefore, the new Certification Procedure will permit certified engines installed in new highway motorcycle chassis to be operated or re-sold without onerous construction and ownership restrictions, provided the requirements of the procedure, as well as the federal Clean Air Act anti-tampering requirements, are met. “This is a very important announcement for the v-twin industry, including every builder and shop in the US. We have been working hard on these certifications since the letter of guidance was issued in July of 2006 and I’m extremely happy to see all three of the engine families approved just as the 2007 season is ready to kick off,” said S&S VP of Product Development, Scott Sjovall. STURGIS BUILDERS’ BREAKFAST WILL BE BACK IN AUGUST AT THE RALLY–Join the world’s most recognized bike builders for the 2nd Annual Builders Breakfast in Sturgis. Tickets and details available at: –Darcy Betlach AMERICAN FREEDOM RIDERS TRAVELING TO VIETNAM WALL THIS WEEKEND–A group of American Freedom Riders are going on an unofficial ride to Wickenburg this Saturday (1-20) to see the traveling Viet Nam Wall. Everyone is invited to join us, especially those of you who rode with us last weekend to the Ramos and Compean rally. What a great group of riders – real patriots and real people. We will stage in the Denny’s parking lot on Bell Rd. just west of I-17. Kickstand up at 10:00 am. We will make a straight run to Wickenburg, spend whatever time is appropriate at the wall, and then come back to the Western Trails Ranch for lunch and beverage. We are hoping that many of you will get to know us better and want to ride with us regularly. Many of us also ride with the Patriot Guard when we can, but the fact is, ten times more Americans are killed by illegal aliens in our own country every year than are servicemen overseas, and we feel that this problem does not receive the attention it deserves. We have a lot of activity planned to address various aspects of illegal immigration, and we intend to remain active in the Ramos and Compean convictions for as long as necessary. Nacho Ramos and his family spent two days with us and we quickly learned that they are wonderful people and great Americans. What is happening to him is absolutely heartbreaking. Come enjoy the day with us and see if our goals make sense to you. –Danny WARNING!! OWNING A COOL SUCKER PUNCH SALLYS CUSTOM MAY BRING YOU “UNWANTED” ATTENTION!!–That’s right. IDAHO MRO FORMED– BikePAC of Idaho, Inc., a new statewide grassroots motorcyclist rights organization (MRO), has been recently formed to address the concerns of motorcycle riders in Idaho at both the state and federal level. BikePAC is a member based organization and is actively seeking area representatives to promote motorcycle safety, awareness and involvement in the political process. For more information on BikePAC of Idaho and the “new” Red Light Bill (S1367) that its members initiated, please visit our website, http://www.bikepacofidaho.org. BikePAC of Idaho was recently approved as an NCOM Member Group by unanimous vote of the NCOM Board of Directors. Over 2,000 motorcycle organizations, associations and clubs are members of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists, a nationwide umbrella organization that supports the efforts of state and local motorcycle groups with networking, information-sharing, lobbying, legal counseling and organizational assistance. –Bill Bish NCOM CONVENTION COMING– The 22nd annual NCOM Convention will be held Mother’s Day weekend, May 10-13, 2007, at the Hilton Charlotte University Place, located at 8629 JM Keynes Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina. Reserve your room now for the special NCOM rate by calling (704) 547-7444 or 1-(800) HILTONS. Hosted by ABATE/Concerned Bikers Association of North Carolina and the Confederation of Clubs North Carolina, this annual gathering draws over a thousand motorcyclists rights leaders from across the country to discuss topics of concern to all riders. Meetings, seminars and group discussions focus on safety issues, legal rights, legislative efforts and litigation techniques to benefit our right to ride. Registration fees for the Convention are $75 including the Silver Spoke Awards Banquet on Saturday night, or $40 for the Convention only. All motorcyclists welcome. To pre-register, call the National Coalition of Motorcyclists at (800) 525-5355 or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. INSIGHT INTO THE GOVERNMENT NUMBERS GAME– Even if we bought into the government’s claim that unhelmeted riders cost U.S. taxpayers $853 million last year, let’s put that number in perspective. According to MAG-UK (Motorcycle Action Group of the United Kingdom), citing statistics from the BBC website, the United States spent $1.9 trillion on healthcare in 2004, so unhelmeted motorcyclists accounted for .00004% of the total costs. For comparison, caring for smoking related health problems cost the government $12.9 billion, or .007%, making it 150 times more costly. Obesity costs the government $7.7 billion in healthcare expenses. Alcohol costs the government $12.2 billion in healthcare expenses. Medicaid fraud costs the government $140 billion in healthcare expenses. The list goes on. –Rogue Continued On Page 4

. Virginia is only one of two states that specifically don’t allow two motorcycles to ride two abreast in a traffic lane.
. Two motorcycles abreast in a traffic lane aids in making the motorcycles more visible to other traffic.
. In larger groups of motorcycles, riding two abreast keeps the overall length of the group shorter, and discourages other vehicles from dangerously cutting into the group – an issue motorcyclists riding in groups often face.

BIKERNET DEWEY JELEN PRODUCT OF THE WEEK–The bastard said he was going to send me a 150 plus horsepower engine. I was out of my mind with anticipation. I knew for sure it was going to power the mudflap girl bike I plan to build with two 23-inch wheels, a US Choppers frame and a KIWI front end in 2008. I was so excited I stood out by the steel gate in 35 degree temps waiting on the UPS man. This is what arrived, a billet twin cam salt and pepper shaker. I’m still trying to get it to fire up.
Here’s what Dewey sent: DEWEY’S CUSTOM V-TWIN salt and pepper shacker. 150+ hp. V-Twin motor will put some spice in your life. Shakes just like an old Harley ! One cylinder is salt, one is pepper. Machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum on a CNC lathe and mill right here in New Mexico ,USA. Available in bare machined finish from the CNC. These motors are 4 inches tall. They have a nice ‘smooth’ machined finish on them so they are easy to polish. PROUD TO BE AMERICAN ! $105 and I pay shipping. Cashiers check or Money order.
PUSH FOR TEXAS LEGISLATIVE DAY-BE THERE–From the state coordinator of the Texas ABATE Confederation:
I cannot stress enough the urgency for everyone to attend Legislative Day. Do not be fooled into thinking because we have one hotel booked that we have near enough people to make an impact in Austin. To make a real impact we need all the hotels and campgrounds booked. While a long parade of motorcycles would make an impressive sight in Austin, do not let the weather keep you from coming. More than a parade, we need every face that we can get in front of your legislators. If we are to make a statement we need the galleries full with standing room only in the halls.
We need your legislators office overflowing all day with people that live in their district so that they get the message that the people who vote for them want their voice heard. Don’t worry if you don’t know what to say we will have position papers for you and people to go with you if needed. If you don’t know who your legislator is we will have people to help you figure it out. If you haven’t been before, it’s fun, it’s informative, and you will come away with the feeling that you have done something to protect the lifestyle that all bikers cherish. Get there anyway you can and join ABATE, TMRAII, The Confederation of Clubs, and many individual bikers in the capitol on January 22ND, as we start fighting for your rights in what will certainly be a tough legislative session.
— Robert Fletcher
If you have received a ticket as the result of a helmet stop this pastyear, including a warning ticket, please bring it with you or send it toLegislative Day. Turn it in at the temporary office set up at the hotel.

PENNSYLVANIA LEGISLATIVE SESSION–Here we go. The session is just starting and here we are trying to fight for our freedom again. Thought this would be of interest to all.

Yesterday, Senator Connie Williams began circulating legislation for co-sponsorship that would require people who are permitted to ride without a helmet to carry and maintain at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred while operating or riding (passenger) on a motorcycle.Senator Williams stated “It is important that motorcyclists take responsibility for their actions and that includes carrying insurance to cover the potential for an accident – whether they can prove the accident was caused by another motorist, a mishap with a deer, or debris on the roadway. “Please contact your State Senator and urge them NOT to co-sponsor this misguided bill. Anyone who is over 21 with at least 2 calendar years on a class M license or has successfully passed an approved motorcycle safety course falls into the category of permitted to ride without a helmet. So, even if you choose to ride with a lid, the law would require that you carry the medical insurance.
This type of legislation is discriminatory towards motorcyclists andis also an insult because the largest percentage of motorcycle crashes is caused by inattentive motorists (most often a left-hand turn Right-of-Way violation into our path of travel).
If you unsure who your State Senator is, please visit this websiteand enter your Zip+4http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/find.cfm
If you do not know your Zip+4, please visit this website:http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp
You may contact your State Senator with a phone call , writing your own letter,or by using either of the the sample letter attached. (if you do contact them, please let me know which Senator you contacted. Also, if they gave any indications on their feelings, please also inform of this.) Any problems, feel free to contact me. Thanks for your help in this crucial matter.

NEW BIKES DOMINATE ANOTHER SUCCESS STORY FOR BIKESHOWS EUROPE–Bikeshows Europe have started the new year on full throttle after heralding the 13th annual National Motorcycle Show a great success. More than 16,000 visitors packed the G-Mex Centre in Manchester over three days, for what is the first in a long season of adrenaline-fuelled consumer shows for all manner of biking enthusiast.
Based in Wilmslow, Cheshire, event organisers Bikeshows Europe were delighted not just with the turnout, but also with the number of new bikes unveiled at the 2007 show, as event director Howard Cartledge explains; –
“Visitor levels have been consistent since we acquired the show in 2003, but we are just as delighted that so many new bikes were on show. Benelli made their UK unveiling of both the bigger Tornado and the all-new Tre-K 1130cc at Manchester and Italsport from Bury displayed the new Ducati 1098 to coincide with a nationwide dealer launch. Colin Appleyard also debuted two new Harley trikes and Manchester firm Boom Trikes wowed the crowds with the stunning Swiss-built GG Quad. It is good to know that it doesn’t all have to happen at the NEC and this has been a quite prestigious leap forward for us as an organiser of smaller, but very popular regional shows.”
Howard looked to the future and said; – “We will keep the recipe the same by continuing with the indoor stunt arena, outdoor stunt shows, motorcycle dealer and trade stands, because visitors enjoy the variety; although a few of the ingredients will change to keep it fresh. Some exhibitors did suggest that sales were slightly down on the previous year, but put this down to a time of high borrowing where people are starting to feel the pinch. Having said this, enquiries about new bikes and touring holidays were significantly better and this suggests an optimistic outlook for the biking calendar.”
The next confirmed Bikeshows Europe events will be the South West Motorcycle Show in Exeter on August bank holiday and the North West Motorcycle Extravaganza at Haydock Park on September 22nd and 23rd. The company is yet to finalise details of other motorcycling events for this summer.

BOBBER DEAL OF THE WEEK–I was hoping you might be able to help me as I’ve seen you highlight bikes in the past that people are looking to sell. Here’s what I got:2005 Harley Davidson Twin Cam Bobber Special Construction – $16000
Sacrificing this awesome bobber to finance the restoration of ’69 Mustang (Mom’s first car!). This bike was built two years ago by a friend who was a mechanic at Westminster HD. I picked it up from him when he moved out of state and couldn’t take it with him. It sports a Paughco frame with HD wide glide front end and a King Sporty gas tank. Wheels are DNA. Brakes are factory 4 piston units, 2 calipers up front and a single out back. With as little weight as it’s running, it’ll stop on a dime. The engine is a 95 Cu. In. Twin Cam with S&S cases, Screaming Eagles 203 cams, Screaming Eagle 42mm Flatside Carb, S&S Breather Valves and Forged Pistons. This thing runs hard. Trans is a 5 speed HD unit and is mated to the engine with a Primo Brute IV 3″ belt drive. Pipes are custom with removable baffles. Ignition is an ultra trick, ultra compact Altmann Micro Machines P3 from Germany. Speedo is a 2 5/8, electic unit from Auto Meter. Hand Controls and four piston Brake calipers are factory HD.
Tires are Pirelli Scorpions. Signals and taillight are all LED units. No shortcuts where taken in putting this scooter together. It was made to look like it’s right out of the ’40’s but run like a modern bike with the highest level of reliabilty and safety. Together we’ve put just under 6000 miles and not an ounce of trouble. You want to look ol skool but not worry about breaking down…this is the ride for you! Ask me any question. As a special construction bike it has already been titled by California state 2 years ago, so no worries about titling, registering or insuring. Once you see how well this baby’s been put together, you know you won’t find another one like it. The bike also comes with a set of painted split fat bob gas tanks and mounting brackets.

MONROE COUNTY SHERIFF CHARGED–A Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy charged withkilling a motorcyclist while driving drunk smelled of alcohol, walkedunsteadily and said he had been driving before he demanded a lawyer andrefused to take a sobriety test, two officers testified today. At a pretrial hearing for James R. Telban Jr., charged with second-degreevehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated in the Sept. 6 death ofPeter Volkmuth in Parma, Greece Police Officer Charles St. John said hefirst encountered Telban holding onto the bed of his pickup truck after thecrash.
“I asked him if he had been involved in a motor vehicle accident thatnight,” St. John said. “He said, yes, he had. I asked him if he had beendriving. He said yes, he was. I asked him what happened. He said he wasleaving Braemar Country Club and he must have pulled out in front ofsomebody.”
Before St. John turned over Telban to a sheriff’s deputy to be arrested fordriving while intoxicated, St. John said he noticed that Telban swayed as hewalked, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, and that he smelled of alcohol.
Although St. John was outside Greece, he had responded to the crash scene atthe request of a dispatcher to assist sheriff’s deputies with theinvestigation.
Deputy John Billitier, who arrested Telban, said he made similarobservations and saw Telban stumble and have to be helped by another deputy.
“I observed that his eyes were bloodshot and he had a moderate odor of analcoholic beverage emanating from his mouth, and that his movements werehesitant,” Billitier said. The crash occurred as Telban, 45, was leaving Braemar Country Club, 4704 W.Ridge Road. Volkmuth, 27, suffered a fatal head injury when his westboundmotorcycle collided with Telban’s Ford Ranger pickup truck.
Although Telban refused to take a field-sobriety test, a blood test latershowed that his blood-alcohol content was 0.24 percent – three times thelevel needed to bring a DWI charge.
Today’s hearing in Monroe County Court will determine whether sheriff’sdeputies had probable cause to arrest Telban and whether his briefstatements can be used at his trial.
Judge John J. Connell scheduled the trial to begin April 23. It should takeless than a week, said Telban’s lawyer, Joseph S. Damelio.
Telban resigned from the sheriff’s office after he was arrested. A grandjury later indicted him for vehicular manslaughter, which carries a penaltyranging from probation to seven years in prison.

CYCLESPACE TAKES ONLINE MOTORCYCLE ENTHUSIASTS TO THE NEXT LEVEL– ATLANTA–CycleSpace announced today the launch of their new website, CycleSpace.com. A fusion of the MySpace experience, Internet television, and dedicated resource information, CycleSpace serves up a media-rich, fully interactive social networking environment to the motorcycle culture. “Our own research showed there was a need for an all-inclusive portal where enthusiasts could share and enjoy all aspects of their culture, ” says Jeremy Wolfe, founder and CEO of CycleSpace.
“It is the first of its kind to fuse a social network, like myspace, with Internet television that delivers programming geared specifically toward the CycleSpace member.?” Using its own production team, CycleSpace delivers high-quality streaming audio/video via their Internet television network.
Their customized programming will focus on the culture of motorcylists and include exclusive race coverage, special guest interviews, tech channels, builder highlights, and feature hard to find businesses with unique products. Like most other social networking environments, members create personal profiles, join groups or chat rooms, and utilize the custom instant messaging tool.Another interesting feature is the public area where members can find reviews of local bike hangouts and post cycle-related events to a public calendar.
Future additions to the site will include dedicated business profiles and a classifieds section to promote member-to-member commerce. Business resources are highlighted as a way of bringing hard to find products and information to the motorcycle public while promoting revenue growth for many small and medium size businesses.
Fresh and culturally-focused, CycleSpace brings together motorcycle enthusiasts of every genre, from choppers to dirt bikes, and, should come as a relief for many enthusiasts who previously had to sift through countless web sites that only partially satisfied their needs.Plans to promote the site include giveaways like televisions, Playstation 3s, and motorcycle gear to members. About CycleSpace Making the internet smaller for people who love motorcycles, CycleSpace offers enthusiasts of every genre a place to connect with riders, find equipment, share opinions, and watch exclusive videos.

HOLLISTER RALLY ORGANIZERS CLEAR FIRST HURDLE– Wednesday,Hollister – The Hollister Motorcycle Rally Committee will meet its first financial deadline with room to spare, according to rally promoter Seth Doulton. The committee paid the city $125,000 at Tuesday night’s council meeting, and must pay $250,000 by March 1 and the balance of the rally’s total public safety costs – estimated at $382,000 – by March 31. If any of those deadlines aren’t met, the city’s motorcycle rally will be canceled.
Doulton, whose company Horse Power Promotions was hired by the committee to organize the event, said he’s been working hard to enlist event sponsors and vendors, especially since the rally was approved in December. He reported that vendors have already signed up for about two-thirds of the available vending space, and that he’s distributed 10,000 promotional fliers for the Hollister rally – which brings about 100,000 bikers into town on Independence Day weekend – in the last two weeks.
“It’s a little bit of a crunch time at the office, but I feel really good about things,” Doulton said. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive.”Committee chairwoman Charisse Tyson, who owns Johnny’s Bar and Grill, said Doulton’s work has been “awesome.” When asked if she was surprised that the rally has exceeded its first financial benchmark, Tyson said, “No, not knowing Seth. I don’t doubt for a minute that we’re going to make it.”
But not everyone is thrilled at the rally’s progress. Councilman Doug Emerson has estimated that his constituents are divided 50-50 for and against the rally. And although most local businesses declined to discuss the rally’s approval, some have reported closing their doors on Independence Day weekend in the past.
“At this time, I can only say, ‘Oh well, whatever, I hope it will be fine,’ ” said Hollister resident Claudia Olson, a vocal rally opponent. “But I don’t think it will be. It’s going to grow and become a problem for the community.”Olson said the city’s leadership needs to present a vision for what Hollister will be “when we grow up.”
“Do we want to be another Sturgis?” Olson said, pointing to the South Dakota city that hosts one of the largest motorcycle events in the world. For her part, Olson is worried the city will become known as a year-round motorcycle haven.
The committee also approved an official rally logo created by Hollister resident Jim Wood of Sage Blanc, Inc. Doulton said the logo has already been licensed to companies producing official rally sunglasses, seats, helmets and wheels, with other negotiations in progress. The council declined to approve the motorcycle rally in 2006, but tens of thousands of bikers rode into town anyway, and the city had to foot the public safety bill.

Hey,
This news may kick my ass. I just rolled onto the coast from Arizona where I rode Saxon Bikes with my son Frank, the mad weightlifter, tattoo artist. We’re working up a couple of features for Bikernet on how Saxon builds bikes and a road test on their Warlord. I picked the Warlord, ’cause it’s stretched and cool and the staff member who rides and tests every Saxon the build said it was his favorite. Perfect.
Frank, the son of Bandit, helped me with a road test of the Scepter Hot Rod, highbar Saxon for the HORSE. Watch for it. So I just rolled in, washed my face and downloaded 150 e-mails. Let’s hit the news. It’s cold in the shop. Hell it was even brisk in the Arizona desert near the Mexican boarder flying along the sand, passed Soyonora Cactus at 90 mph. I’ll fill you in on new Bikernet features at the end of the news:

NEW VICTORY VISION TOURING MODEL ON BIKERNET–A report will be on the home page and in our new model, road test department in the next hour and it’s 1:00 Friday.
FASTENER TOPIC OF THE WEEK– I’m working on some info for your readers on different topics of fasteners. It’s been crazy around here, just got back from SEMA, and now heading back to Vegas for a fastener show. I’m in the process of finding socket head drilled bolts and also titanium bolts. Our address is 9510 owensmouth ave #2 Chatsworth , ca 91311.
Happy New Year to all at Biker net and fellow readers. Our last article dealt with bolt tensile strength and I thought we should follow that up with plating fasteners.
We all have seen chrome bolts or grade 8 yellow finish bolts or maybe a bluish silver bolts? What do the colors mean? Generally speaking the different colors or finish have nothing to do with the grade, they are merely for corrosion protection or cosmetic appearance.
When you typically purchase fasteners such as bolts, nuts and washers the grade of the bolt generally has certain plating applied to them. Example when you buy a grade 8 bolt for suspension parts it is usually a yellow or gold finish called yellow zinc or yellow chromate. These two plating are similar but slightly different in appearance. Now don’t be fooled that all grade 8 fasteners are these two colors only. Some grade 8 comes with what we call a black oil finish not to be confused with black zinc or oxide. A black oil finish is the process a fastener goes threw during manufacturing of heat treatment. Also some grade 8 comes in a clear zinc or blue zinc finish. So the wise thing to do is always look at the makings on the head to be sure what grade you’re using.
Some of you might be using or perhaps seen SOCKETHEAD Allens with a black finish, these fasteners are grade 8 and are generally plated in black oxide or zinc. The black oxide is often a dullish finish as the black zinc has a higher gloss to it. Black oxide and zinc both have great corrosion properties but will rust. Some of us like the look of black fasteners but don’t want the rusty bolt that will come with that finish after a few months in the weather.
Is there a black bolt that has a better corrosion finish? Yes, depending on the strength you require, you can use stainless steel fasteners and plate them black zinc. We offer this to our customers who don’t want chrome or raw stainless and prefer the look of a shiny black bolt.
Chrome bolts often have the markings taken off during polishing and plating process, this can be a problem if you don’t know who you are buying from. It is always best to use a reputable source for your chrome needs. Chrome can come in two grades 5 & 8 and some times F911. At DMP Enterprises we only sell grade 8 chrome but offer grade 5 if that is what the OEM part requires.
Can someone take their own bolts and have those chromed, gold or black finished? Yes, but there are a few things to look out for, one being if you are plating a fastener that is grade 8 or stronger it needs to be backed in an oven after plating. You are probably wondering “WHAT”. It’s very simple a term called “hydrogen imbrittlement” can occur in the fastener during plating. Hydrogen imbrittlement are gases trapped in the fastener, which if not taken care of can cause failure in the bolt. Most plating shops are aware of this process of baking but will not do it unless you ask them to. At DMP we have all grade 8 bolts baked for 6-8 hours and grade above that between 9-10 hours. This is still not a fool proof way of getting rid of hydrogen imbrittlement but it seems to generally work and has been the process for many years in the plating business.
As always we welcome feedback and questions to wegotum@sbcglobal.net.

BIKERNET HALL OF SHAME LIST–Bandit, saw your line in the Sunday Post about your advertisers that haven’t paid up. They are thieves, plain and simple, and should be treated as such. It’s great to work with someone but it takes two. If they don’t want to cooperate then boil them in oil.

PS got a kick out of last years Salt Shaker saga,,good luck with the Assalt Weapan……..hey, I could help you out w/ Valerie’s measurements….heh, heh, heh
Thanks brother. It’s tough when a big company like Von Dutch doesn’t pay a little company like Bikernet. How can I pay writers and photographers, if they don’t pay? It effects Bikernet content and that pisses me off. There?s just a couple of companies that don’t honor their words, and believe me, I give them every opportunity.

DAN GURNEY’s 40th ANNIVERSARY YEAR–
2007 marks the anniversary year of Dan Gurney’s historic F 1 victory withthe All American Racers Eagle in the Grand Prix of Belgium atSpa-Francorchamps on June 18, 1967. In the 100 year history of Grand PrixRacing he remains the only American who managed to put an American Formula 1car of his own construction in the winner’s circle of a World ChampionshipGrand Prix. It is also the 40th anniversary of Ford’s all-American win atthe 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Dan co-drive the winning car with AJ Foyt.
While these two outstanding victories remain the highlights of Gurney’s 1967racing season, his whole year was one for the record books and quite typicalof his schedule during the preceding 8 years.
In 1967 he crossed the Atlantic several times starting the season at the F 1Grand Prix of South Africa in Kyalami on New Years Day and ending it at theRex Mays 300 for Indy cars in Riverside, California in November. When allwas said and done he had participated in 27 major events driving Stock cars,Sports cars, Indy cars, Formula 1 cars, Cam Am and TransAm machines. He hadput his car among the first three on the grid no less than 18 times, leadingmany races but suffering a multitude of mechanical breakdowns.
In February he set the fastest qualifying time for the 24 Hours of Daytonain a Ford MK II.
In March he won the pole and all three heats of the Formula 1 Race ofChampions at Brands Hatch, England, giving his Eagle and the new purposebuilt Gurney-Weslake V 12 engine its first victory.

BIKERNET RADIO INTERVIEWS ST. FRANCIS HIGH – DUALING HIGH SCHOOL BUILD-OFF COMPETITORS FOR DONNIE SMITH SHOW–Brent Stavig, Metal Instructor of St. Francis High School, St. Francis, MN, heads up Chopper High where his students at are building a Chopper of their own design. They are competing in the 2007 Donnie Smith Chopper Class Challenge against Kevin Baas and Kennedy High School at the 2007 Donnie Smith Invitational Bike Show on March 25 and 26th in the Saint Paul’s RiverCentre.
This is the second year for the students to build a bike. Last year’s Chopper was called the Iron Saint, which won the People’s Choice award at the 2006 Donnie Smith Invitational Bike Show. Before a wrench was turned or a bolt tightened on the competition motorcycle, the 30 students at Chopper High worked on a 50cc mini chopper. They took a trimester practicing different techniques and making the parts for the bike like the a gas tank, handle bars and seat pan.
The program has become a biker community project with individuals and corporations jumping in to help the youths in there journey of developing rolling art.
Choppers Inc. donated a frame, Kokesh Motorcycle is helping the class determine the parts that will work with it. Kevin Lasso, service manager at Zylstra Harley-Davidson, personally donated a Harley-Davidson Shovelhead motor and a four speed transmission. They may use the Shovelhead, however, a large new style V-Twin would be ideal for the project. Matt Hotch Designs has thrown in some parts not to mention several large commitments such as a drive train from R-Max USA by Roadmax, a Thunder Saddle from Metric Thunder and parts from Dennis Kirk.
To see the latest St. Francis Chopper you will need to attend the 2007 Donnie Smith Invitational Bike Show on March 25th- 26th, 2007. Click here for details.Brent Stavig is on Bikernet Radio. You can hear the show by clicking here.
STEALTH ACTION IN CHARLOTTE–Winter finally hit the Charlotte area with cold temps and some ice and there isn’t any bread or milk within 50 miles! With the mention of ice and cold around here people go into a panic? You know it is funny the past few weeks the temps have been spring like and people were complaining that winter was never going to come, now that it is here they are complaining about the ice! Go figure that one! Me, I am just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round!
Here at Stealth Bike Works things have been quite the last week. We still have work in the shop though and that is a good thing. We still have all the wanna be bike builders come and talk about building a bike and that is as far as it ever goes , talk! This week one wanted a rigid frame with a swingarm???? Maybe he was talking about a softail frame? You know I just turned 50 last week and I find my patience is running a little thin these days and I get annoyed real easy with a lot of the “I’m gonna talk.”
This time of year is my least favorite time of the year. Things seem to stand still and the month drags by. I am already looking forward to spring. Do I sound grumpy? Probably! One of the things that really gripes my ass is when someone tells you they are going to do something and they don’t show up. If you are not going to do what you say, don’t say you are, keep your word!
All is not dismal though. The Easyriders bike show come to Charlotte next weekend (Jan. 27th&28th), that should make for a good time. SBW is entering a bike, so I am looking forward to the show. The bike from the Pomona show looked great. The show here in Charlotte usually draws big crowds.
Well that is about it. I gotta go do something I promised a friend I would do!
Until next week, RIDE!

My Indian Larry Story
By Crazy Horse |
It's been a hell of a summer. A twisted journey I could have never imagined,a series of sky highs and surreal lows. For those out there who read myarticles on Bikernet and in The Horse and see only a person who does highprofile paintwork, goes to bike events, and gets magazine covers, believeme, it was not always like that.
I say, horrific because, to live each day with your stomach inknots because worry is eating you alive feels horrific. Worry about what?Mainly about paying bills, the rent, gas, phone, and then trying to keep abusiness alive. Much of it was my own fault. Bad decisions, screwed uppriorities.
It was no picnic. 13 years ago, all I wanted was to get a “real”job, doing welding or parts inspection, some kind of manufacturing job thatwould give me the security of a weekly paycheck. A successful paintingcareer was a far off pipe dream.
Sure it wasn't all hell. There wereadventures mixed in, breaks from the reality of what my life had become. There were those rare moments when I'd be able to see clearly through thehaze and see the beauty of life in this world. The two men who had hoped Iwould achieve some kind of stability or success in my life both died beforeit finally happened.
I would get close and then an event in my personal life would derailthe momentum and I was forced to start over again and again and again. Andup until last year, it was like that. In the middle of some crisis, I wouldthink back to the few years of steady employment, basking in the memory ofworking a set amount of hours each week, then doing whatever I wanted, whether it be riding motorcycles, hiking or cleaning the house.
ThenSturgis 2003 happened and it all changed. Suddenly all the pieces began tofall into place and all those years in hell began to mean something.
That's how it happens. For some fortunate people, it happens early in life. But for others, it happens late. And that's how it happened for Indian Larry. Most people, including me had never heard of him prior to The MotorcycleMania Show on Discovery. I was completely blown away by the bikes he built. But to him it was always a team effort. I especially admired the paintworkon his bikes and he was quick to give Robert Pradke the credit. “He justcomes up with this stuff,” Larry said. “It blows me away.”
I only met Larry a little overa year ago at the Smoke Out. But I was just another face in the crowd. Itwasn't until Myrtle Beach of this year, that Larry became someone who gaveme a hug each time I saw him. I was staying with Sam Morgan and the ThrillArena stunt riding crew. Looking back on that sunny, quiet morning when heshowed up at the drome, I knew then what a treasure that time was. In factthat whole weekend trip was priceless. But then that's what Larry tried totell me a few months later in Sturgis.
Sturgis wore onLarry hard. He'd been mobbed wherever he went. So he began to take breaks atAmerican Motordrome Company's compound. It was a relaxing hideout where hecould sit back and BS with Jay, Sam and the rest of the crew. I know he hada few good talks with Sam. She and I are very similar in our backgrounds. Iwas fortunate enough to see him there a few times as I had been using it asa refuge too.
Located on Main St, it was perfectly situated. I could ridedown the back streets, bang a left into an alley and park my bike right atthe drome. I never waited in traffic. You never knew who'd you'd runinto there. I'd pull up and see certain bikes parked and could tellwho was hanging out.
It was at Michael Lichter's bobber bike show that Ispent the most time with Larry. I knew he was busy but wanted to tellhim something and next thing I knew, it was a half hour later that ourconversation finally ended. I felt bad for taking up so much of his precious time buthe was on a roll, asking me questions, explaining things to me. It was thekind of advice a father gives.
My dad has been gone nearly ten years. I hadnot bothered to take his advice seriously when he gave it, as I was youngerand “knew more than him.” And now that I am older, I sorely miss hiswords. So it was with great interest that I listened to Larry, trying tofile each and every word away, so I could remember it forever.
He explained that the days I had spent inhell made me into the person I am now. “Without going through that, youwouldn't be who you are. You had to go through that to get here, where you're standing right now,” He said.
“But,” I explained, “I'd probably wouldn't have such a bad attitude.”He looked at me with a slight smile on his face, shaking his head. “And allthat makes you a survivor. You can handle situations a lot of people couldn't deal with. I know, believe me, I know,” Larry said.
His words that day will stay with me forever. I will honor Larry by tryingto live by that advice. I'll try and be more patient with people. I won'ttake a single moment of life for granted, wishing things had gone different. That's just a waste. Instead I'll put my emotions, dreams, and wishes intomy writing and painting. And if I succeed in my career, that's great. Ifnot, I gave it a hell of a try and it was an awesome ride that let me meetincredible people and took me to fantastic places. Hopefully Larry met my dad. I know my dad would have loved Larry's bikes. Maybehe can tell him that I didn't turn out to be such a hopeless mess after all.
Thanks,
–JoAnn

TEXAS COWBOY FAVORITE– A Texas cowboy is driving down the road and he sees a sign in frontof a restaurant that reads:
Happy hour specialLobster tail & beer
“Lord almighty” he says to himself, “my three favorite things”.
PATRIOT GUARD HONORS FALLEN MARIETTA SOLDIER–As he surveyed nearly 200 flag-flying motorcycles approaching the church where former student Hayes Clayton Jr. was about to be eulogized, David Gilbreath couldn’t hold back the tears.
“That’s impressive, seeing all these folks coming out to honor Hayes,” said Gilbreath, who was a vice principal at Marietta High School when Clayton was a student. “He’d take this as a real honor.”
Army Capt. Hayes Clayton Jr., 29, died Christmas Day in an explosion in Balad, about 50 miles north of Baghdad, Iraq. As mourners walked toward the sanctuary at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Marietta on Saturday, they were greeted by the Patriot Guard Riders, a national organization of motorcyclists – many veterans themselves – initially formed to shield grieving families from protesters who picket at military funerals and claim the deaths are God’s retribution for a country that tolerates homosexuality.
A small contingent of the protesters, from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., showed up Saturday – but at the wrong location. They had obtained a permit to demonstrate outside the church where the funeral originally was scheduled, about a mile up Whitlock Avenue, but the service was moved at the last minute to accommodate the overflow crowd.
“I guess they had bad intel,” said Marietta police Officer Casey Camp.Regardless, the protesters would have had a difficult time overwhelming the Patriot Guard Riders, whose red, white and blue mission has become more about comforting families than confronting pickets.
“This is patriotism in motion right here,” said Nick Petty, 68, of Fairburn. The retired Marine is a national officer with the Patriot Guard Riders.
“Capt. Clayton gave his life for our freedoms, and it’s our duty to honor that,” he said. “I look at this like it’s my job. This is what I do.”Petty said he has attended 59 funerals since joining the Guard last February.
“It tears me apart, every last one of them,” he said. Those who knew Clayton said they appreciated the respect paid by this group of strangers, who mostly rode Harleys.”It shows that he touched more people than just his friends and family,” said Andrew Jefferson, who was in the ROTC with Clayton at Fort Valley State University in Middle Georgia.
Some people turned out just to watch, having read about the Patriot Guard Riders.
“I could hear the rumble of the engines from my house,” said George Miller, who lives about a block away from the church on Marietta’s west side. “This is very inspirational, very fitting for someone who gave his life for their country.”Others showed up for their first mission on Saturday.”We’ve had people come up with flags to stand with us,” said rider Bill Gaskin, who coordinated the tribute. “There’s something about a bunch of grizzled old bikers in leather standing at attention, holding a flag to honor someone they didn’t know, that really gets to people.”

TWO NEW MOTORCYCLE LAWS IN FLORIDA– One requires motorcycles registered to those under 21 to display a special license plate. The other is to force all First Time Applicants for Motorcycle Endorsements to attend a Safety Course which they will have to pay for.
I am against both of these laws.
People are serving in the military and putting their life on the line for our rights but they cannot exercise their right to make decisions about their own safety while operating a vehicle. It also would not stop those under 21 from operating a motorcycle with out a helmet if the motorcycle is registered to some one else.
The Mandatory Rider Training Course has been lobbied into law by those looking to make money from it. The courses should be a matter of choice and made Free to Residents.
The State of Florida has been collecting $1.00 for every license issued since the separate license law was passed.
When Clark Maxwell submitted the bill to the Florida Legislature he included a section that the money could not be used for anything else.
CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE THIS MONEY IS!!!!!!!!!
Something that the riders of Florida should also be aware of is that should the Mandatory Rider Training Law be allowed to stay on the books the following will be Mandatory Re-Schooling for those already with Motorcycle endorsements. I am not talking about testing here but having to go back to school and pay. At this time there is no cap on what these schools, classes and courses charge so once it becomes Mandatory You Are At Their Mercy!
Motorcycle Riders Of Florida. Please Contact Your legislator and Tell Them You Are Against These Two Laws.

THREE BIKERS WERE OUT RIDING, COOTER, PETE AND K.C.–As they came to the intersection in town a car ran the stop sign and hits Cooter who is killed instantly.
As the ambulance takes the body away, Pete says, “Well, damn, someone should go and tell his wife.”
KC says, “OK, I’m pretty good at that sensitive stuff, I’ll do it.”
Two hours later, he comes back carrying a case of Budweiser.
Pete says, “Where did you get that beer, KC?”
“Cooter’s wife gave it to me,” KC replies.
“That’s unbelievable, you told the lady her husband was dead and she gave you beer?”
Well, not exactly”, KC says. “When she answered the door, I said to her, You must be Cooter’s widow’.”
She said, “You must be mistaken, I’m not a widow.”…. then I said “I’ll bet you a case of Budweiser you are.”

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL, THE THURSDAY NEWS FINALE–While the Assalt Weapan frame is being hammered into shape by Rick Krost at U.S. Choppers and the wheels are machined at Renegade our master, official 5-Ball Artist Chris Kallas hunts for just the right model for the Assalt Weapan art. “I was searching the web for references of Girls & Guns for the Assalt Weapan logo,” Chris said. “I Found a ton of possible poses, but want to cross reference them with pin up stuff I have. Maybe I can widdle down the poses to just a few soon. Here’s a link for TOO MANY photos of chicks with guns if you have some time.”http://www.moviebadgirls.com/index.html.
I know I had more to report, but it slipped through my brain cells and escaped out the back through the shop. Next week we’re featuring a couple of bikes including a Show Winner by Scott Long, Rick Krost and Andrew from Departure. We’re wrapping up a couple of techs including one from Compu-Fire on their new alternator charging system. Another Bonneville report is forthcoming plus a ride report from Chuck Riddle. THE ANNA JAMERSON EXPERIENCES-AN ASTONISHING UFO ABDUCTION CASE– After a lengthy hiatus, the Intruders Foundation (IF) will resume its regular program of seminars with a presentation by Anna Jamerson, one of the authors of CONNECTIONS, in which she will discuss her extraordinary UFO abduction experiences. Anna and her friend Beth Collings met in the late 1980s, and subsequently discovered that they were both undergoing UFO abductions, and that, amazingly, they had been brought together as children in a series of ongoing encounters evidently engineered by the UFO occupants.
Anna Jamerson is a highly intelligent, articulate woman who spoke movingly about her encounters at our second all-day IF conference in 2000 at the New York Hall of Science. On January 27, she will recount what is in many ways perhaps one of the most dramatic and complex series of UFO abductions ever. Her joint abductions with Beth Collings comprise the central section of C.D.B. Bryan’s much acclaimed book, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE FOURTH KIND, and her talk at IF will be accompanied by a remarkable group of illustrations by her gifted co-writer, Collings.
The events she will detail mostly occurred at a horse farm she owns, but one incident apparently involves an underground alien installation of some sort. Ranking with the Betty and Barney Hill case, the Linda Cortile abduction, and the 1975 Travis Walton incident, Anna Jamerson’s account is of the utmost importance to the history of the UFO abduction phenomenon. Her book, CONNECTIONS, is one that should be in the library for anyone interested in the subject, and will be available for sale at the seminar.
The seminar will be held on January 27th at the new meeting rooms of A.R.E., located on the SECOND FLOOR at 241 W. 30th Street (between Seventh and Eighth Avenues), New York, NY. The price of the seminar is $30 for non-members and $20 for members of IF, seniors and students. Reservations must be made by telephone at 212-645-5278, and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Payment must be made in advance to secure the reservation. Make checks payable to the Intruders Foundation, P.O. Box 30233, New York, NY 10011. Seating is limited. Book early! Only 60 reservations will be accepted!

S&S NEXT GENERATION V-TWIN-X-WEDGE!–With EPA and CARB restrictions becoming more and more prevalent, S&S Cycle looked to the future and designed a new OE specific engine more in line with environmental expectations. This next generation v-twin is a departure from S&S’ traditional engine design and a step toward the future of air-cooled, pushrod operated v-twins.
In October of 2002, a small group of S&S Product Development team members were given a green light by the S&S senior management team to start on a new engine design to ensure that S&S OE customers would have engines available when the emissions laws tightened up. It needed to be an air-cooled v-twin, with pushrod operated overhead valves and meet the upcoming 2008 ARB and 2010 EPA regulations. The S&S Product Development team accepted the challenge and began engineering the engine of the future.
By October of 2003 the first prototype design was under way and a running test version spent time on the S&S dyno in December of 2004. So, in just two years a concept became a design, which turned into a running prototype. In just five more short months, April 2005 saw another prototype installed in a chassis and ridden around Wisconsin. When the prototype had reached production intent, two different dyno tests were performed-one to simulate highway operation at 3200rpm for 800 hours and another that ran a 200-hour duty cycle on a dyno that varied engine speed and load from idle to full-throttle. This rigorous testing was necessary before any further development could be done. Once the S&S Product Development team was satisfied with the engine’s durability, they finalized the functional design.
The engine, code-named Fred around the S&S offices during development, is the all-new S&S X-Wedge (pronounced “cross” or “ex”)-a 56-degree, closed-loop fuel-injected, three-cam, overhead valve v-twin designed to deliver the performance expected of an S&S engine, but still comply with EPA laws. One key engineering feature is the versatility of the design to create a range of engine sizes. Included are specifications or the 117ci X-Wedge to be released later this year, but in the future bore and stroke sizes can be maximized to create a 139ci engine. The 56-degree v-twin utilizes three serpentine belt-driven, large base-circle cams; two exhaust cams and a common intake cam achieve almost straight pushrod angles that combine with automotive-style rockers and roller tappets to create an incredibly quiet, EPA noise conscious valve train.
Induction on the X-Wedge is done with the new S&S single-bore throttle body pumping fuel and air into a wedge shaped combustion chamber contained in a head with a five stud bolt pattern and increased fin area for maximum cooling abilities. The head has the fuel injector mounted directly in it for even more efficient combustion. A non-structural rocker cover that will allow various OE builders to design a look specific to their brand covers the aforementioned automotive rockers.
The cylinders use the five-bolt pattern, have no oil return holes and are common design for front or rear placement. Their round shape reduces bore distortion and computer designed progressive fin spacing increase the cylinders cooling capabilities. The cylinders are die-cast over the most aggressive liner seen in the industry to ensure heat transfer and permanent adhesion between the cast iron liners and the aluminum surrounding them.
Naturally, case design improvements were implemented including beefier engine mounts, single oil pump sump location and integral tappet blocks and common front and rear tappet covers. The case holds a massive one-piece forged crank that uses automotive plain style main and rod bearings. By increasing the crankshaft mass, additional strength is found and vibration reduction is achieved, even when the stroke is pushed out to 4 3/8″. The X-Wedge will not fit in a standard frame. Specific engine mounts are required, but it will match up to the common primary and transmission designs currently on the market so OE manufacturers will not have to re-engineer the driveline to utilize the technology X-Wedge offers.
There has been much speculation about the new S&S X-Wedge engine, and we are proud to finally present the details of this groundbreaking product.

STAGING INSTRUCTIONS FOR COLORADO FREEDOM RIDE–American Freedom Riders – January 13 staging instructionsFinally we have the schedule and the staging details worked out for the ride to the federal courthouse on Saturday, January 13th.
This event was organized on short notice and getting permisson from the federal authorities in El Paso for Agent Ramos to attend took some doing. Our special thanks to Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo for his helping hand in this matter. The good news is that Nacho Ramos will be riding to the event with us.
We will stage at Denny’s Restaurant on Bell Road in the first block west of I-17 at 10:00 am. We will be there for a period of time organizing into ride groups and preparing for a grand entry into the downtown event. Agent Ramos is riding with us and we will make our arrival to the protest very dramatic for the press coverage.
If you are coming from the south and can’t get up to the staging area, go directly to the federal building where you will be given instructions on where to park. These riders will go out to meet and join the main group so everyone makes the grand entrance together. Please do your best to go to the staging area as it will make things go much smoother.
Any of you who have not yet ridden with us – now is the time. We need to show the Justice department that these agents are supported by legal American citizens.
LOOKING FOR VINTAGE H-D SADDLEBAGS–Any customers/ friends want oem vintage 1948-54 FL leather saddlebags? They could make the difference in the “most original” catergory. The ebay Item number: 200065083890
THE FASTENER TIP OF THE WEEK–I thought I would first start on discussing different head markings on bolts and what they mean. What does those slashes and numbers generally mean on a hex bolt? It very simple, generally speaking on a clear zinc plated bolt you will notice 3 hash markings on the head this represents grade 5 which carries a tensile strength of 120,000 psi. A gold color zinc plated bolt has 6 hash markings on the head. This represents grade 8 which carry a tensile strength of 150,000 psi. Is their a stronger bolt than grade eight? Yes there is a F-911 hex bolts and 12-point flange bolts that are rated between 180,000 & 190,000 psi tensile strength.
Now to really screw things up for all of us who have Harley Davidson’s, the V-rod has many metric fasteners. If you have ever looked a metric hex bolt you might notice the markings 8.8, 10.9 or 12.9 this does not mean grade 8,10 or 12. The grade 8.8 refers to the tensile strength which is generally 116,000 psi, grade 10.9 is generally 150,000 and grade 12.9 is generally 175,000 psi.
Now what about stainless steel bolts? Well 18-8 stainless is great for corrosion resistance and polishes up to a brilliant finish but is not extremely strong. Generally speaking most of the stainless fasteners are 18-8 and carry a 100,000 tensile strength. Do they make a stronger tensile strength stainless? Yes, and the answer is ARP or Automotive Racing Products has stainless fasteners rated at 170,000 psi tensile strength .
Part 2 of this article will be on plating of fasteners and what to look out for when trying to do it yourself. Derek

Hey,
It’s a new year, new biz, new thoughts and new goals. I’m twisted today, there’s so much going on. We’re rocking with Bikernet’s growth and over a half dozen new sponsors. We truly appreciate the support and recognition. We’re fabricating our Bonneville Frame at U.S. Choppers right now and we’re about to feature another U.S. Chopper Board Track Knucklehead. It’s cool.
I’m going to bring up something reluctantly, but it needs to surface. Have you seen Inconvenient Truth, a documentary by Al Gore on Global Warming and our future on earth. We’re fucked if we don’t do something quick. On the other hand, we can do a couple of things and fix it quick, but it means we change our thinking for the good of mankind. Check it out. Here’s just a tidbit from the movie: In WWII the population of the earth crested 2 billion. Just 60 years later we’re at 6.4 billion and by 2050 we’ll reach over 9.5 billion! We can’t handle that level of population growth. A buddy, who is a doctor, told me, “It we sterilize every woman and man after they have one child we can half the earth’s population in one generation.” Amazing. It’s not just about the EPA, but if we can drive less, get rid of our connection to middle East oil, ride more and work on other fuel sources, we can turn this bullshit around. Let me know what you think? We’re Americans–we can fix anything!
On a lighter note, we hauled two bikes to the Easyriders show in Pomona and came away with some hot notions and new bikes to feature on Bikernet. Check out Chica’s Softail conversion on this Jap bike, but it would work on any rigid. We’ll bring you another report tomorrow from Chris Kallas. I’m trying to deliver a report on each and every show right up to the grand finale in Kansas City, in May. Next is Sacramento this weekend, be there!
HUGH THE CHOPPER KING REPORTING FROM THE BUILD-OFF ROAD– Was in Hartford for NE Motorcycle Expo over weekend. Two very good builders: Greg Westberry and Brian Fuller. Wave of the future.
–Hugh King
We will bring you a full report on the Departure Bike Works drag bikes, on it’s way to a race track in Baton Rouge to test their Panhead metal against a Hyabusa drag bike. It’s going to be tough. They’re filming the Drag Race this weekend.
On another Discovery Build-off News front, Gypsy has her Build-off Winning Bike for sale. An amazing creation that includes a Berry Wardlaw, Accurate Engineering Knucklehead engine and exhaust system help from Larry Curik of Lone Star Choppers. This is a fine machine. Contact Berry Wardlaw at Accurate Engineering for more info: accurate@accurate-engineering.com
Plus, Scott from LeRoy Thompson’s shop won the BBO at the Easyriders Pomona Show this last weekend. Duane Ballard, one of our custom leather seat masters tooled the seat for Stinger Custom Cycles.
MYSTERY RIDE IN BAGHDAD–I was in Baghdad a few months ago and came across this ol’ scoot with a side car that some of the contract security guys were using to get from the exchange to their hooch. I couldn’t figure out what in the hell is was though. Got any ideas? Keep up the great work!

MOTORCYCLE LIFESTYLE VIDEO LAUNCHES ON THE INTERNET–January 9, 2007 (Livingston, MT) A new Web feature called Motorcycle Lifestyle Video is now available on WomenRidersNow.com covering the lifestyle side of motorcycling. Motorcycle Lifestyle Video encompasses the people, places and things of motorcycling as seen through the eyes of the riders.
“We are showcasing the motorcycling lifestyle and products through the experiences of the people involved,” explains Genevieve Schmitt, president of Women Riders Now, publisher of WomenRidersNow.com. “While we plan to feature all riders, there will be a heavy emphasis on women because they are the fastest growing segment of new riders and our goal is to attract more women to the sport. Plus, we feel who wouldn’t want to watch a woman riding a motorcycle? Both men and women will want to watch the stories we’re featuring.”
Two segments currently featured on Motorcycle Lifestyle Video are “Femmoto,” an all-women’s demo track day held each year in Las Vegas, and “Women’s Motocross,” exploring why so many young women are attracted to riding in the dirt. Future stories will include motorcycle evaluations by experienced female test riders, something not currently seen anywhere on the Web or on television. The video stories are structured with the broadest appeal possible much like a news magazine segment on TV focuses on the human interest element. “Our goal with Motorcycle Lifestyle Video? is to share the motorcycling experience with everyone so those who aren?t currently riding may want to get involved in the sport,” says Schmitt.

CHOPPER CHICKS CREW TO BUILD CHOPPER IN FRONT OF LIVE AUDIENCE AT DAYTONA BIKE WEEK FOR NATIONAL BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION– January 9, 2007-Daytona, FLA-The Chopper Chicks Crew sponsored by Bikernet.com, a dedicated, all female team of bike builders, will build a chopper and donate it to The National Breast Cancer Foundation during Daytona Bike Week. The International Master Bike Builder Association, an organization of master builders, and Daytona International Speedway will host the Chicks Crew during Daytona Bike Week 2007 on March 8th from 10am-6pm for the build. The bike will be used for fund raising, or any other medium that raises awareness and funding to help the foundation toward its goals. “The Pink Ribbon Chopper” will be the second bike the crew has built for Breast Cancer, but the first for the foundation.
Since the pink ribbon is an international symbol signifying Breast Cancer awareness, the Chopper Chicks Crew decided to use it as the theme for their build. “The Pink Ribbon Chopper,” a long, lean hard tail in white with a pink ribbon painted on the gas tank and a pink rear fender in the shape of a ribbon, will be built in front of a live audience. This exciting event will take place on “Builder’s Row” at Daytona International Speedway, during Daytona Bike Week. The chopper will also have wheels with huge pink ribbons as spokes. The bike will be built using donated parts and labor from a number of major sponsors.
The Chicks Crew consists of Athena Ransom of Vagabond Chopper Co., who has been around motorcycles her entire life and riding since she was seven; Joann Bortles of Crazy Horse Painting, an award winning painter whose work has been featured in magazines such as Easyriders, Ironworks, and American Iron; Jayme Gray from Pussycat Choppers, an avid motorcyclist with a degree from MMI and extensive V-Twin experience; Katie Putnam from Mitch Bergeron’s, another MMI degree holder with tons of mechanical experience; and Sarah Lyon from Magnum Cycles in Kentucky, a creative, self taught mechanic. All five of whom are dedicated to building “The Pink Ribbon Chopper.”
“We decided that it was time for women to make their mark in the motorcycle industry and what better way than to build a bike for a cause that touches almost every woman in some way. We hope to raise awareness of breast cancer as a disease and empower women to realize their dreams.” Said Athena Ransom of Vagabond Choppers.
The NBCF mission is to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through education, and by providing mammograms for those in need. The NBCF works with health care organizations in places like Los Angeles, New York City, and Puerto Rico to provide underserved women with access to information about breast cancer and free mammograms. The founder and president of The NBCF is Janelle Hail, a breast cancer survivor of twenty-five years, who relates to women with compassion, understanding, and inspiration as she conducts public educational programs across the nation. To learn more about the NBCF, visit them online at . www.nationalbreastcancer.org
Every twelve minutes a woman in America dies of breast cancer. This year more than 211,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,000 will die. One in six women either have breast cancer or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. 1600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 95%. Mammograms are the best early detection methods, yet 13 million women 40 years of age and older have never had a mammogram. Support The National Breast Cancer Foundation today and give the gift of hope to those in need.

TOYOTA INSTALLS DUI SENSORS–TOKYO – Toyota Motor Corp. is developing a fail-safe system for cars that detects drunken drivers and automatically shuts the vehicle down if sensors pick up signs of excessive alcohol consumption, a news report said Wednesday.
Cars fitted with the detection system will not start if sweat sensors in the driving wheel detect high levels of alcohol in the driver’s bloodstream, according to a report carried by the mass-circulation daily, Asahi Shimbun.
The system could also kick in if the sensors detect abnormal steering, or if a special camera shows that the driver’s pupils are not in focus. The car is then slowed to a halt, the report said.
The world’s No. 2 automaker hopes to fit cars with the system by the end of 2009, according to the report. Calls to Toyota’s headquarters in Nagoya rang unanswered on Wednesday, a public holiday.
Nissan Motor Co., another Japanese car manufacturer, has already been experimenting with breathalyzer-like devices that could detect if a driver was drunken. Similar technologies, such as alcohol ignition interlocks, are in use in the U.S. and elsewhere.
Concerns over drunken driving have surged in Japan following a series of alcohol-related accidents last year. In August, a drunken driver collided with another vehicle carrying a family of five, plunging them off a bridge and killing three children.
The incident prompted stepped-up roadside spot checks by police, who also plan to stiffen penalties for drunken driving.
BIKERNET AND 5-BALL RACING FOUND ANOTHER BONNEVILLE RACING CONNECTION–My name is Drew Gatewood, and I was the F.I.M. Technical Steward at Bonneville this year.I am the guy in the bib overalls who measured your pan engine. In any case, I found your site on the internet and was looking at all the pictures, and Valerie riding the course.Your group was certainly having a good time, and I kinda wished I was racing instead of working.
’06 was my first time ever to the Bonneville Salt Flats, and I don’t think I’ve ever had more fun.My position as Tech. Steward has already been confirmed for this year (and hopefully many more),and I’m already chomping at the bit to get back.
Though I make my living building Harley-Davidsons, I am slowly but surely building a bike to run, hopefully in ’08 which is non H-D.625cc, 1cylinder, 6 speed, liquid cooled, & probably turbocharged Jawa Engine, in a chromemoly reproduction Norton style featherbed frame with full fairing. Should put out around 130+ HP on race gas.Don’t get me wrong, my life revolves around Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and has for over 30 years, but I also sell Jawa speedway bikes & promote speedway racing here in Indiana. So, a Jawa engine I can get for a good price.
I can’t wait to see all the great equipment on the salt this year, and hopefully I’ll be measuring your bike again, which would indicate another record being broken.
Denis Manning told me when I first met him that all I had to do was go to Boneville once, and I would probably get bit by the speed bug bad. Boy, did he ever call that one on the money.
Good luck on whatever you’re building, and see ya in September.

A 360-HUB BRAKE TESTIMONIAL FROM SHOW WINNER–Thank you all for making such great products and letting Dynamic Choppers showcase them on this motorcyle ‘Ditch Digger’ (long story behind that name).
We debuted this motorcycle at the 2006 Artistry in Iron at Vegas Bike Fest, sadly not the winner.
It appeared again at the Big Twin West show where it was awarded an ‘excellence in design award’.
This past weekend it was in Pomona at the first ever Pro Class Easyriders show where it won, it will move forward to Kansas in May, and if it achieves a top 6 placement Dynamic Choppers will tour with Easyriders in 2008.
This was not possible without any of your help, once again thank you.
Also note that HOT BIKE did a photo shoot on this bike for their next hot girls/ hot bikes issue which will be on the news stands for three months.
Also another photo shoot was done where it will be a feature bike in the very near future again with HOTBIKE, (first available issue).

ARKANSAS HELMET LEGISLATION INTRODUCED–We have been hearing rumors that there would be another Helmet Law Bill introduced in the Arkansas legislation, and sure enough, there is. We can’t just sit idly by and let this get pushed down our throats.
It is time start educating yourself, get to know your state representative and senators, and ask them not to support this bill. Get the local restaurants, gas stations, hotels, and any other place bikers frequent involved. Let them know that motorcyclist are reputable and should have the privilege to have the right to choose whether or not they want to wear a helmet.
Let them know that many tourist dollars are brought into the state of Arkansas for the simple reason, of Freedom to Choose.
When you go to the link to look at the bill, you will find it is short and not so sweet. It is taking away the privileges that many have fought so long and hard to keep.
I am asking for you to start preparing, and when the right time hits, we need to be ready to voice our opinion.
Please send this out to all the members of your District, and let’s use this opportunity to help us win this battle.
