Sept. 6, 2007 – Today is the last day here at BUB, and of course the most beautiful of all week. The sky is clear, slight breeze and perfect track conditions, at least for this wet year. Streamliners have been held off because of bad weather for the last two days, but not today. They are flying down the track in between AMA record setting motorcycles. The whole vibe today is good.
Val made her first pass at mid-day. She clocked 151 on the first pass and 161 on the backup, using the Nitrous on the backup.
The track was suppose to close at noon today, however they’re letting them run till three. We could have walked away, setting a record in an 2000 APS PF class again this year, but Bandit and Berry Wardlaw, the engine builder and master of Accurate Engineering, want one more run up and back since they seem to have the bike dialed in. Isn’t that always the case? On this last day we now have the bike tuned in and camp set-up figured out.
Val just ran again, as I typed this; I’m waiting for Bandit to call, with the time. It looked good. I ord came down that she ran over 154 mph and we were hoping for a return run.
At the end of today, the bike will go to impound for scrutinizing. Gotta make sure it is what we say it is. After a week of tuning, timing and nail-biting the rules call for taking the top end off the bike, so the judges can measure the bore and stroke. After that we head back to the hotel to relax until the banquet tonight. It will feel good to head home. We’ll leave tomorrow morning for State Line, (Primm) spend the night and get home on Saturday.
There won’t be a news today; working on this laptop is difficult, however I will post more photos later. People are continually coming in and out of camp with needs so can’t be on the computer for too long.
Wish us luck people. Two hours from now we will have an official record for our class, Special Construction, fuel, pushrod, 2000cc, partial streamline. Whew!!
I’ll post the final speed in a bit.
–Sin Wu
THAT’S IT IN A NUTSHELL– Except for a thousand nail-biting details. We’ll bring you all the harried elements over the next couple of weeks. I’m dodging the Bub’s banquet just to bring you a handful of images and a brief note. The complete effort will be published as a book by Wolfgang publications and distributed near Christmas.
Just today we fired the Nitrous to the Assalt Weapan for the first time. Our AIM sports data acquisition system worked fantastically. We could tell shift points, rpms, wheel slippage and exhaust temps. One cylinder jumped up during a brief 30 horsepower blast and the other dropped to a cooler level as expected. We discovered a severed line and returned to the pits. Get this. They told us we could make two more passes for an enhanced record, if we qualified before 1:00 p.m. Then we were told record runs could be attempted until 3:00. We were on line with an improved tuning package at 1:30. We made our initial pass by 2:00 and jammed back to the impound area to make a return pass.
Wait until I tell you about the conditions of the salt and the trips on this long rigid frame from starting points and back to the pits. We were ready for our final pass, and a 170 mph run, when the AMA official, Ken, shut us down. We were supposed to qualify before 1:00. We were toast yet tuned like never before.
Larry Petri, the builder, from the notorious Chop N Grind crew took me aside after the event closed. “You guys did an amazing job,” he said. “The conditions on the salt have never been this bad in the last six years and you made passes at 162 mph on a ground up concept bike, at your first meet. You should be damn proud.”
We may still be the owners of the Worlds Fastest Panhead and own another AMA World Land Speed Record. We’ll fill you in next week and more in the Sunday Post, when I’m not trying to hunt and peck on this bastard lap top.
Ride Forever,
Bandit
P.S. This just in. Like I said, I’m missing the banquet to bring you some news. I just received a call from Barry Wardlaw that the Assalt Weapan won the Best Engineered Motorcycle Award for this Bubs Bonneville meet at 8:44 this evening. Damn, all Bikernet Readers, sponsors and Chris Kallas, our concept drawing, illustrator, should be proud.
2007 Sturgis World Championship
By Bandit |
The World Championship of Custom Bike Building was first staged at Custom Chrome's annual dealer show at their Morgan Hill, California, headquarters, in October 2004, where it attracted 48 competitors fielding 63 bikes.
The second annual Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building was staged at Advanstar's Big Twin West Dealer Expo in Las Vegas, November 2005. The support of both these organizations in assisting with the costs of staging the first two World Championships is gratefully acknowledged. The 2005 World Championship attracted 166 top-class entries, from 110 competitors, drawn from 14 countries and was, by common acclaim, the greatest custom bike show ever staged or seen anywhere.
Last year the Championship was hosted at Thunder Road, Sturgis, over August 5th to 7th. 100 bikes were entered by 77 competitors drawn from 11 countries, and the standard of entries was acknowledged to be even higher than that of 2005.
This year saw a move to Champions Hall, our own purpose-built facility on Lazelle Street, and attracted 77 entries from 71 competitors, again from 11 countries, with a record 25 international entries. Continuing the trend of a raised standard of entries at each subsequent show, this year's competition was agreed by the competitors to be the toughest yet.
Judging of the event is done by 'peer review', in that all competitors collectively decide the World Champion, together with a select VIP panel drawn from the press and aftermarket industry, all votes counting equally towards the final result.
The event features two initiatives – the World Championship Affiliate Program, in which the winners of associated shows around the world have expenses paid to compete in the World Championship, and the Partner Program which is explained more fully in 'Partner Program.doc' which has allowed the World Championship to become financially independent rather than dependent on a single sponsor.
Affilate shows whose winners competed this year were:
Bike Expo, Padova, Italy
Canadian Championship of Bike Building, Olds, Alberta
Cool-Breaker, Yokohama, Japan
Custom Bike Show, Norrtelje, Sweden
European Championship of Custom Bike Building, Mainz, Germany
Fantasy Bike Show, Sestao, Spain
Irish Motorbike and Scooter Show, Dublin, Ireland
In addition, the winners of the Asian International Motorcyle Expo held in Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia, and BigTwin Bike Show & Expo in the Netherlands will compete in the 2008 World Championship.

2007 World Championship Of Custom Bike Building… RESULTS!
In baseball there's the World Series, a competition dominated by American teams. In custom bike building there's the AMD World Championship, contested by a truly global collection of bike builders. The international flavor of the event was further reinforced by the number of countries represented in the top 20 places; 10 different nationalities were included.
Top honors in the 2007 World Championship was taken by Stellan Egeland, of SE Service, out of Skogås, Sweden. Stellan, who last year placed third with only the second bike he'd ever built, this year wowed the crowds with a speedway inspired board tracker, featuring hand made cylinders and heads on a Knucklehead bottom end.
His bike – Hulster 8-valve – takes engineering excellence to a new level. The one-off, four-valve cylinder heads had the cooling fins filed by hand and the ports manually cut, drilled and then filed to shape. With the intricate engine work completed Stellan then reworked a Norton gearbox to handle transmission duties, before adding a generator to the frame which is driven by a second chain, driven off the rear wheel.
In one of the closest results in the event's history, returning World Champion Chicara Nagata of Japan's Chicara Motorcycles, polled enough votes to take second place with Chicara Art Two. Building on the design cues of his winning bike of last year, Chicara rose to the challenge of the World Championship once again by building a bike around a Flathead motor.
The brazing showing through a fine layer of chrome, and the unique front suspension remaining from last year, but this time the frame was suspended with a single shock on the rear. As with Stellan, Chicara looked to British motorcycles for his choice of transmission; his solution was a four-speed box from a Triumph. Continuing the Old School feel of the bike is a set of 28in spoked wheels.
Chicara's countryman Keiji Kawakita, of Hot-Dock Custom Cycles, Tokyo, lifted the third place trophy thanks to his Red Gladiator bike. It takes elements of traditional Bobber and mixes in European Streetfighter styling for a truly unique machine.
At the heart of the bike is a Hot-Dock engineered HR4V engine, which takes a H-D motor and adds four-valve heads and custom fuel injection.
Dave Cook of Cook Customs, out of Milwaukee, flies the flag for the USA in fourth place with his softail bike with hidden suspension and perimeter brakes. With the exception of the motor and trans, the entire bike was fabricated by Dave in his workshop.
Sapka Muvek, the Hungarian shop who took first place in the 2007 European Championship of Custom Bike Building, claimed fifth place with Time Machine, a build based on HG Wells' story of the same name. The bike redefines the term Old School with features such as handmade wooden wheels.
Furthering the international flavor of the event, in sixth place is Paul Stewart of Dynamic Choppers, an Englishman based in Las Vegas. The stainless steel framed Epic gathered a crowd as soon as it rolled into the show hall on its 34.5in wheels.
Taking inspiration from racing bikes, Frenchman Cyril Gautier uses a Sportster engine as a stressed member in the frame of his seventh placed bike – Rock 'n' Bike. The ultra low, completely rigid bike mixes in hot rod styling, even using a complete set of Panhard PL17 hubcaps as wheel covers.
Bucking the trend for traditional styling is Jolly Roger Customs with the Jolly Roger. Built by Mario Audia and Darrion Tefft, the futuristically and organically styled machine runs a 196in Hawaya billet motor.
The top ten is rounded out by former two times World Champion of Custom Bike Building Roger Goldammer. His build Nortorious takes the idea of British café racers and in particular bikes like Norton's Manx and gives it his unique touch. Known for ignoring conventions, Roger once again took a v-twin motor and removed the rear cylinder, putting a super charger in its place. He then reworked the redundant rear head to fit the front cylinder before adding fuel injection.
Christian Dotson took tenth place with his first-ever bike, which also won “America's Most Beautiful Motorcycle” award at the Oakland Grand National Roadster Show in January.

Sturgis 2007
By Crazy Horse |
It’s way too hard to put it all into words, but Sturgis 2007 was an amazing journey for me. The hectic intensity of the Today Show gig two weeks before, left me little energy to keep pace with what happened next. So, quick, let’s take a 2007 Sturgis journey. This time, it will be a photo journey as it would be too hard to put the whole twisted thing into words.
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
We tried to ride but the vicious thunderstorms stole away many hours of potential riding. We did get out to Wyoming a few times.
Saturday
Saturday we rode, and I mean we rode hard. There is no other way to ride when ya ride with Dozer. After getting a ticket for the apehangers on Josh’s bike, we started in Deadwood, then turned onto twisty Nemo Road. We looked on the map and picked the windiest roads between Nemo and Keystone. Our goal was Needles Highway. We blasted through a series of evil curves. Dozer used to work with Ron Finch and rides old style, that is, side by side.
It was quite an experience to ride with someone who loves to pour on the throttle and blast through the curves and is so good at holding the line. What was not that fun was having his stroker and Tony’s V-Rod blow past my stock H-D motored chopper, on the straights.
We were in Keystone when dark clouds began to move across the previously clear blue sky, but we set out for Needles anyway. Just below Keystone there is this wicked set of curves complete with tunnels and overpasses that spiral across one another. That was followed by Iron Mt Road. It was like the best amusement park ride ever, wicking through these curves. We were just about ready to peel onto Needles Highway when the rain hit.
The clouds were churning evil dark that direction so we headed for a patch of blue sky, but the rain followed us. While trying to outrun thunderstorms, I saw wild donkeys under the trees and decided it was pretty bad when donkeys had more sense that we did. I pulled over, the guys followed and we hid out under the trees for the next half hour until the rain passed. We made it back to Keystone, where Josh’s shifter threatened to jump off.
Reqardless it was a great day of riding. After breaking every speed limit between Deadwood and Custer, we parted company and I rolled back to Spearfish in record time, passing anyone I could. I was within 3 miles of home base when my chopper quit. After several hours, a gallon of gas, 7 rescuers, and a new coil – it looked like my ignition died. My chopper returned to the hotel in the back of a truck. A lowly first for me at any event in the past 13 years.
Sunday
The next day I rode a borrowed bobber and Jim, my Hamster husband, installed a new ignition on the chop. The bobber was cool as hell to ride, but getting back on my chopper felt like sitting on an easy chair. The bike never felt so comfy. I spent the rest of my time riding my chop thinking, “Oh yeah, this is nice.”
Monday
Tuesday Builder’s Breakfast, Hanging downtown, and Michael Lichter Show reception
Wednesday
There is no picture to go with this part of the story. I was hanging with the crew from SATA Spray equipment at Glencoe Campground when I got the call that some folks were waiting for me down in Black Hawk, a little town out by Rapid City. It was 10 pm and I was packing up the chopper getting ready to leave when I heard a familiar voice. The campsite was just behind the Rockin the Rally stage. It sounded like Joan Jett and sure enough it was. So I rode out on my late night trip to the rocking sound of “I hate myself for lovin‚ you.” It was stuck in my head for the rest of the week.
I do not recommend riding on I 90 late at night. It is russian roulette, only with deer instead of bullets, and anyone who thinks otherwise, is a fool. Think I’m a wuss? Tell that to Mike Pag who broke his leg in 3 places back in 2003 when he hit a deer doing 100 mph. Or to the guy they were putting in the bodybag outside of Deadwood that afternoon. Or better yet, tell it to the owner of this website that ended up with an antler through his lung back in 2001.
And yet, there I am, out there playing beat the odds. People are on bikes are flying past me. I’m doing about 65. Just fast enough to hopefully keep from getting run over, yet slow enough to maybe maneuver in case one of those fuckers, grazing by the side of the road, decide to take a quick hop.
At one point I was going straight up the side of a mountain in the middle of nowhere, it dark as hell, I swear I saw bear in the woods. I wondered what the hell was doing in Bear Country. This guy literally lived on top of a mountain. After our meeting, I rode the 40 miles back to Spearfish and wanted to kiss the ground when I arrived safely. But this was the funny part; I was the only woman at the meeting and the only person who rode a motorcycle to it.
Thursday
So that’s it! For more info on Sturgis, look up the dates for 2008, get the time off work and get your butt out there. It is without a doubt the best bike event in the country. Great people, brutally gorgeous riding and lots of nighttime action. And to that guy who made us wait 2 hours for our food at Cheyenne Crossing, “You didn’t have to be a jerk, just cos I didn’t laugh at your stupid joke. We used to recommend your restaurant to everyone. I won’t in the future.
The entire event can’t be all blue skies and ice cold beer. Some 90 percent of Sturgis 2007 was tops. Can’t wait for next year.

Hey,
This is more than a pre-Bonneville news. We’re packing to head out to the salty brine as I write. In fact I shouldn’t scribble at all. I need to load the Kendon lift, the tool box, cases of Amsoil oil, cases of water, boxes of trail mix, oil drain buckets, oil filters, extra sparkplugs, rags, oil lines, extra bottles of nitrous, clothes, chow, munchies and booze.
George, The Wild Brush, working magic alone the rough edge of the magic flake.
What the hell. You think building this bike was a challenge? Imagine trying to organize the run to the flats and dragging my garage along. Of course, the paint on the tank isn’t complete; the stickers for the front fender need to be picked up tomorrow, along with our tow vehicle, plus a meeting with George, the Wild Brush, pinstriper.
Hell or high water we roll out tomorrow. I spoke to the Bennett’s Performance team yesterday and they were up against similar obstacles. Watch the news for more updates:

In addition, the trikes have been invited to participate in the upcoming American Music Awards. Check the web site for the pictures from the Emmys. They will be posted when we return to Ohio.
BIKERNET SPONSOR SPEAKS UP–I thought I had checked it out, but given the memory issues I don’t trust myself or what I know anymore..lol lol Thanks for putting the pieces in both last Thursday and Sunday… It means a lot to me. Been talkin to the Speed Gods and only they know the answer of how your runs will go, but I thought I detected some positive vibes comin’ from them. Good luck to you, Nyla, Valerie and the whole team on the Salt Flats.
Respectfully,
–Jester
I went through some mental stumbling after I hit that deer. I know the Assalt Weapan is going to do well, just don’t know how well. Toss some salt over your shoulder and speak to the iron maiden in the sky. Tell her, “Baby I love you.” That should do it.
Thanks again for your support.

We pitched them to be the main 5-Ball sponsor several months ago and were turned down flat. We countered, and they turned us down again. We were on our own. Then moments ago we spoke briefly and he stepped up, sent a check fedex?d overnight. Damn, we?re gonna get to eat in Bonneville. Thanks Bob.

BONNEVILLE WEATHER REPORT–August 27th 2007- Monday:The weather front that came through yesterday really helped the course- though we were worried otherwise! There was very little moisture and a lot of wind.
The course has dried considerably, especially the problem spot between the 6 and 7 mile. The 0-2 has also dried- though both areas still need to dry a bit more to be usable.
Once again the forecast looks hot for the immediate future. We are still exploring alternative options to get the best course possible.ACCESS ROAD: the wind was of great benefit to the access road. There is still some standing water however it is shallow enough to see where to go (and where not to).

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS ALWAYS–I know that usually when you hear from me I’ve got a bug up my ass about stupid shit I see happening in the biker community. Can’t help it sometimes, I’m just real passionate about our lifestyle and try to keep it that way.
Today however, I want to give a shout out to our troops and vets alike. My family and I would like to express our deepest gratitude for those that have served, and are serving our country without regard for their own lives.
They have to hear all the bullshit from the leftist, cowardly, whiny fucks that have no appreciation for the sacrifice they make for their right to be whiny fucks.
These brave men and women are our heroes regardless of the idiots that bash this great country and our leaders.
I would like to ask that everyone take the time to say thank you the next time they come in contact with a soldier or vet, regardless of their feelings about the war. Remember that there aren’t any enemies walking down your street, and who is responsible for that.
To all that are serving, or have served, THANK YOU!!! God Bless you All,

CYCLE SOURCE STURGIS RIDE–Just wanted to take a minute and thank you for helping us get the word out about our ride in Sturgis. 80 bikes and over 120 people, man that was some cool shit! We headed out into the Black Hills for a day of adventure and got some of the greatest riding photos and video footage ever. National builder like Scott Webster, Bill Dodge, Alan Lee, Chica, Jeff, Donny and Christian from Sucker Punch, Ben Jordan, The Led Sled Crew and a ton more all came out to support us.
We rode for about 70 miles (stopping once for a bad little girl who had a lemonade stand set up) to what we told them would be a small western town we’d take over named Hoover. As we pulled up and their town sign read population six, everyone understood that it would be easy muscle. As we sat on the porch of their little general store, Charlie Ransome and Bean’re put on an acrobatic stunt show right in the prairie for everyone’s enjoyment. This was no easy feat since they were riding on natural, bumpy surfaces at speed.
This ride made everyone at the Source proud as hell. almost 2,000 miles from our little home town where the magazine started over 10 years ago and still national builders, riders, scooter tramps and chopper jockeys showed up to support us. This was as good as it gets man and we can’t thank everyone who came enough! Here are a few pics just for now but look for a full spread in the November 2007 Issue of The Cycle Source Magazine!

AMA LEGISLATIVE NEWS– The Tennessee Senate passed the current helmet bill to allow adults 21 years of age and over the right to choose whether or not they wear a helmet. The bill is currently in the House Finance Committee to be heard by the Budget Subcommittee when they return in January of 2008. All Volunteer State riders are urged to contact their state representative and ask him or her to support and co-sponsor HB 1283.
The National Center for Excellence in Rural Safety (CERS) at the University of Minnesota has released a list of states with the country’s most dangerous rural roads. Maine tops the list, with 92 percent of its traffic fatalities occurring on rural roads. CERS based the list on state-by-state data on deaths on rural roads in 2005, along with information from the US Department of Transportation. The causes of high fatality rates on rural roads – roads outside of areas with populations of 5,000 or more – include a false sense of security that leads to high speeds as drivers enjoy the scenery. Head-on collisions and driving off the road are common accidents on rural roads. The entire list of states is available at
Local traffic planning agencies are being asked to contribute to the nationwide Traffic Analysis and Simulation Pooled Fund Study (PFS). Administered by the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, the PFS allows participating agencies to tap each other’s experience in planning transportation projects and to build partnerships on those projects.
The PFS will develop methods for addressing several issues, including modeling for unique projects such as multimodal corridors and for non-recurring congestion caused by accidents, weather and work zones. Any public agency responsible for conducting, managing or approving traffic analysis studies may participate. Information on the program is available at www.tfhrc.gov/its/traffic analysis.htm.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) continued its crackdown on riders attending local motorcycle gatherings this summer, seizing a dozen bikes and issuing 40 citations. Most of the motorcycles were impounded because the riders did not have a motorcycle license. CHP officers targeted participants at bike nights at Zorba’s Restaurant in Highgrove, an unincorporated Riverside County community north of Riverside, and Backwoods BBQ in Corona. The crackdown started after sport-bike riders jammed Inland freeways while performing stunts in traffic on July 16. Those incidents remain under investigation, the CHP said. The CHP has also received numerous complaints from the public about the weekly bike nights.

DENVER NOISE ORDINANCE GOES TO COURT– Here’s the link to the pleadings filed by Wade Eldridge on the (so far) first ticket issued under the noise ordinance: And here’s the link to the news story discussing that the ticket was dismissed on a technicality. Which means that at the present time (if my legal knowledge still serves me and since I haven’t heard otherwise), no challenge is pending on this in Colorado. Ride Free, –Matt Crouch DAS ENDING, BUENOS NOCHES–We’re almost out of here and out of our minds. Try duplicating your shop for the road. That in itself is a daunting challenge. I’m having four more rear sprockets machined today, and I was looking for a 5th transmission stud shim this morning. I called Berry Wardlaw and, as usual, he knew the answer. “Automotive starter shims are the best,” Berry said. “Add that to your Bonneville tech. They come notched so you don’t need to remove the tranny.” There you have it. Another potential problem solved. Now packing begins. I want to thank all the sponsors one more time for your support. This has been a helluva challenge and I kiss salt in hopes we make you proud. Berry wants to ship the bike back to Alabama for more tuning and runs at the Maxum Mile. I’m sure this bike will get around. We already have a feature lined up for Hot Bike. But wait, where’s the gas tank. Mr. Murillo, where are you? Ride Forever, –Bandit

FREEDOM FIGHTER UPDATE–There are some things that are obvious. They are right in your face. One of these is that the use of a cell phone while driving is a distraction and impairment.
Driver distraction kills not only bikers, but everyone else on the road. You can read all the studies you want, and they all say the same thing. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see it. Less that 4,000 soldiers have died in Iraq in four years, but every year in this country 44,000 die in auto accidents and over 50 percent were distracted (cell phones) when the accident occurred. Imagine how many were severly injured, and they have the audacity to complain about loud pipes.
Whatever your views may be on how to approach this issue, there is one thing on which we can agree: Cell phones, at the very least, endanger us. At the very worst, they kill us. We all have the stories to prove it. The activity on Bruce-N-Ray’s Biker Forum demonstrates the passion of bikers all over the country. I estimate 100 posts to the thread:http://pub42.bravenet.com/forum/3562429698/fetch/846647/
This is why we were particularly outraged at a billboard we saw while riding in northern Delaware. In the State’s “Stop Aggressive Driving Campaign”: they promote the reporting of aggressive driving through the USE OF A CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING.
We had to stop and take a picture of this insanity:http://www.delfreedomriders.com/aggressive.jpg
How could anybody in their right mind, especially the Office of Highway Safety (OHS) which is there ostensibly to advise us about risky behavior, even think of such a misguided campaign?See an aggressive driver…report it from your cell phone while driving….run into a biker or a bicyclist or a pedestrian.
We find this to highly irresponsible and negligent on the part of the agency whose purpose is to advise AGAINST driver impairment, not ENCOURAGE it. There is even a paid position within the Office of Highway Safety called “Impaired Driving Prevention Coordinator”.We found many others who were similarly outraged. As independents, Delaware Freedom Riders is a small but dedicated group. We asked our friends from ABATE, MRF, and others to be signatories to the attached letter. It is encouraging that officers of ABATE and the State MRF Representative were positive in their responses. There is still room for activism. There are still people who will sign on the dotted line in the interest of their fellow brothers and sisters on the road.

VALERIE THOMPSON 5-BALL PILOT IS NO. 1 QUALIFIER AT THE DRAGS–It’s hardly the same as winning the final race but it goes to show the team is getting close to its first event win. What a great feeling it was to wake up on Sunday morning knowing VTR was the team to beat going into eliminations. Before the event even started one of racings lessons was offered to Valerie and VTR Team Mascot “Recon” in the form of time management after the month long break in the action.
Their week started with a 2000 mile, 3 day trip that seemingly took forever. The two were in constant traffic jams and construction delays that lead to extra fuel stops and of course more exercise stops for the little yipper. On top of all that high-winds nearly ripped the door off the trailer and thankfully some fellow riders were able to lend hand to a temporary fix and away they went.
Valerie and Recon were suppose to be in Knoxville, TN on Wednesday for a special appearance at “In the Wind” where owner Dennis Jenkins was on hand with a local news station ready to televise Valerie’s appearance. Unfortunately the delays were too many and the TV opportunity was a missed opportunity. Dennis went the extra mile for Valerie with a week of radio commercials and his efforts resulted in a great crowd. Valerie was very disappointed as you can imagine and thankful for all the effort that Dennis and his staff put into the event and all the fans for showing up to see her. You’re the man Dennis!
They did however make the Nitro Party on Thursday at Smith’s Harley-Davidson and where the duo’s traveling woe’s continued; this time a flat tire.
The weekend’s event was “The All Harley Drags Presented by S&S Cycle Thunder in the Valley Nationals” and the place was one of Valerie’s favorites, Bristol Drag-way. The facility is one of the finest and the track among the nation’s best. Bristol is also known for its draw of crazy fans and racing’s finest competitors. The weather on tap was great if you like it very hot and extra humid.

I hadn't been on my '09 Road Glide for about six months. I'd broken my leg earlier in the year and it seemed like it had healed well enough for me to begin riding again. I still wasn't able to walk without a cane but walking and riding are two different things. I could hold the big bagger up during take-offs and landings; once in the wind all is good. I'd done a couple of short rides and had even been called to do a “rescue ride” when one of my guys dropped his bike on his ankle at a club run about a hundred miles from home. By November I was mobile enough to fly to Phoenix where both my Road Glide and my wife live.
Seeing the bike for the first time, and pulling the cover off of it, was like seeing an old friend. I gave it a quick battery charge and it was ready to go. I was in Phoenix the week of Thanksgiving, my wife, who’s a flight attendant, was working a three day flight to Boston and Detroit when I decided to ride the four-hundred miles to San Diego to visit friends. I'd ride to San Diego on Monday, visit on Tuesday and ride back to Phoenix on Wednesday. My wife would return to Phoenix onWednesday afternoon and we'd celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday.
She left for the airport early on Monday morning; I waited until the sun had warmed the morning and the rush hour traffic had died down before completing my final packing and hitting the road. The desert sky was as clear as it could be; the morning was a bit crisp but not enough to quell my enthusiasm for the day. A ride like this not only gives me time to reflect on my life and re-energize my soul but more importantly, it validates me as a man and a rider. I had been coming back from over two years of medical challenges and was working as hard as I could to regain the physical abilities that I once had. I’ll definitely agree that the aging process is not for sissies!!!
By nine o'clock on Monday morning I was ready for my ride. The 103” motor fired immediately and the electronic brain adjusted the mixture and RPM for the short warm-up cycle. Within a minute the motor had dropped back to idle; another minute and I could feel the heat building when I touched the back of my hand to the rear cylinder rocker box cover. Finishing the last of my morning Joe, I mounted this beauty and pointed the bike onto the city streets that would take me to the freeway. Five minutes later, and I was blazing a trail west on the freeway. I crossed four lanes of traffic, got into the HOV lane and paced myself with traffic that was running seventy-five in the fast lanes. Thirty miles west on I-10 and I turned onto Arizona Highway 85, south to Gila Bend and I-8 which would take me through Yuma, El Centro, up and over the Laguna mountain range that spans about seventy miles and reaches an elevation of over 4,200 feet. Once over the mountain it was an easy ride through El Cajon and into San Diego where I¹d turn north on I-805 into San Diego's North County where I'd get on I-5 to Encinitas and my destination.
I made my first gas stop in Gila Bend, called my friend and gave him a brief road report. I’d estimated getting into Encinitas about three that afternoon. With a full tank of gas, I was back on the bike and on I-8 for the next hour-and-a-half to Yuma. I planned to stop for a sandwich and stretch my legs a bit before the second leg of the trip. I rolled into Yuma, dropped my speed to five-over-the-limit, and began looking for a fast food restaurant.
As I began looking for an exit to take I could see a motorcyclist about ten cars ahead of me. He was riding less than the speed limit and was in the slow lane. As I rolled around him I checked out his bike and gave him a friendly wave. It didn't take a second look for me to realize that the rider I¹d just passed was a road warrior; an endangered species & perhaps the last of his kind left in America. I slowed down and waited until he caught up to me; as he rode past me he gave me a big smile and dropped his left leg off of the foot peg and made a circle with his foot; an indication that he was pedaling as fast as he could, or at least as fast as he intended. I smiled and again soaked in both the rider and the ride. I pulled into the slow lane, behind him and rode the fifty-five miles an hour required to keep pace with him.
What drew this rider and his bike to my attention was just how unique he is in this day and age. The rider was sixty or more years old, his beard was silver and full, his hair was long, and in a pony-tail and his eyes a brilliant blue. His clothes were simple and worn and only the necessities: faded Levis, a black Harley t-shirt and a black hoodie. His beanie helmet was completely covered with decals, not “FTW” or “Helmet Laws Suck” decals but ones with towns and states where he¹d traveled. I couldn’t really tell it at the time, but his bike was a 1960 Harley Panhead. I could see that this ancient Panhead was in a hard-tail frame and had a late model Springer front end. I also noticed a suicide shift, the shift lever was behind his left leg and the knob was an old glass door knob. Other than the five gallon fat-bob tanks and modest apes I really couldn't see much more of the bike.
His pack was as unique as his bike. Where all my road gear was tucked neatly away in my hard saddlebags, his bike was loaded with everything he'd need to survive on the road. His bedroll (not really a sleeping bag) was bungeed to his handlebars, giving him some protection from the wind. He was running saddle bags and a sissy bar. Every conceivable space behind the rider was occupied. The back seat, if there was one, was loaded with a duffel bag and all manner of packing containers were strapped to his sissy bar. I decided to follow him until he exited the freeway and, at least, stop him long enough to say hello. I knew that he had an incredible story to tell and that, even though I did have a schedule, my day would be enriched if I could gain some insight into what this man was doing in Yuma, Arizona.
I knew that he’d be pulling off the freeway soon; an old bike like he was riding required the rider to make frequent stops. Even if I had to follow him for fifty miles or so at speeds twenty to thirty miles an hour slower than I was running, it would be worth my while. I was lucky; it wasn’t five miles before he pulled off the freeway. I followed him to the stop sign at the freeway overpass and shouted over the engine noise, “I don't know where you're going but I hope you can stop long enough for me to shake your hand.” He pointed to the casino on the opposite side of the freeway and slipped the clutch on his old Panhead, launching it gently into a left-hand turn towards the casino. I followed him for the short ride to the casino parking lot where he stopped, shifted into neutral and keyed the old motor off. We both got off our bikes and he introduced himself as Billy. I opened my left saddlebag and retrieved my cane so that I could walk around his bike, taking it all in as we began our conversation. Before I’d gotten my cane out of my saddlebag he was already in the process of hand-rolling a cigarette made from loose Bugler tobacco.
Here's where the story gets good; this guy, who’s known as Panhead Billy, has been on the road for the last twenty-four years. He was down in the early 1990s when his leg was broken in an accident at Sturgis. He spent two years getting his leg sorted out before getting back on the road. Even more impressive is the fact that he’s been riding the same 1960 Panhead on his cross country trips for all these years. Billy explained that when he first decided to explore the U.S. his goal was to visit all of the Harley Davidson dealerships. He completed that goal many years ago and, when he can get into Canada, he visits the dealerships there. Now he’s added historic sites, casinos, and other points of interest. He collects things like decals from the dealerships, which he puts on his helmet, and match books from casinos; just something to remind him of where he’s been.
I spent a full hour talking to Billy, asking him about his bike and his life on the road. Billy is not a man of few words and loves to talk about where he’s been, what he’s seen and experienced and, more importantly, where he's going next. I’ll have to say that I envy Panhead Billy for the lifestyle that he's created for himself. As much as I like to ride and especially as much as I love cross country trips, I know thatBilly’s life is often a challenge. It’s physically demanding to ride the way I do: five hundred miles a day for several days at a time. Billy’s approach really makes a lot more sense. He’s out there riding on the back roads and taking it slow and easy. I suspect that he hardly ever rides more than a couple hundred miles a day and that he’ll stop and visit with the locals or just enjoy the beauty of a roadside vista. The first thing we can all learn from Panhead Billy is don’t rush the trip when you can enjoy the scenery.
Billy and I talked about motorcycles, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, the roads we’d traveled, and where we’d be going next. We talked about motorcycle clubs and I told him that I ride with the Gypsy MC. He knew the club and had actually attended the St. Valentine's Day Massacre several years ago. For a few short minutes I felt that I was one of Billy’s peers & but I really know better. His life is the road and he lives it twenty-four seven; my life is made up of as many road trips as I can make, but I'm a long way from living on the road. I savor every moment that I can ride, whether it's running solo or with my brothers or wife, but my life is filled with a lot of different interests.
Billy lives it on-the-road and my hat is off to him. We're similar because of our love for the road and the opportunity to see what weve never seen before. Our styles are different but meeting Billy and getting a glimpse into the smell the roses road discipline he¹s established is something that I'll try to incorporate into my life. We continued talking for the better part of an hour before I realized that my schedule was slipping and I needed to get back on the road. As Billy and I began saying our good-byes and heading out in separate directions he began telling me about an Internet site that had a short video interview with him and the owner of a motorcycle museum. Check it out at Wheels Through Time.
I shook Billy's hand one more time before getting back on my bike and starting the second half of my ride. It's brief encounters like these that make traveling on a motorcycle a truly unique way to get to your destination!

“When in doubt, burn out!”
REAL FUCKING BROTHERHOOD–Hey Bandit, D- Day is coming soon, like I have to tell you. I check everyday to see how everything is going with the bike. I’ve got to tell you I see a lot of red eyeballs in your shop and can smell the midnight oil burning all the way on the east coast. Can anyone say “REAL FUCKING BROTHERHOOD!” to those who always ask what a real biker is? Well just follow this bike being built and you might just learn something. These guys and everybody who helped out are the REAL FUCKING DEAL. Real brothers helping a real bro build a real bike. Maybe if I say “real” a lot it might sink in.
If anybody thinks all these ladies and gents are doing it for the big bucks they would be wrong again. Everybody is busting their ass for no other reason than it’s a dream that one of their brothers have, that?s it! You think these people don’t have anything else to do, MY ASS. This my friends is what they mean when they say A BIKER HAS HEART.
This bike is going to have a lot of soul in it because of all the people who have touched it and left a little bit of themselves behind. This my friends is how most bikes used to be built; built not for the money but by a few brothers helping another brother get his ride on the road. I wish a lot more people would have gotten on board, but hey maybe this is the way it was meant to be. Maybe this highway we are on is meant for only a few and I’ve got to tell you I’m damn fucking proud to be one of them.
I’ve always read interviews where people say they aren’t like the bikers of old, blah, blah, blah ( I admit us real guys have a rough spot or two, but hey that’s what makes us the sunshiny guys that we are) I’ll say it again, I’m proud to be one of them. Those that are opposed, WELL !!.
If anyone agrees with me, let Bandit know.
Later,
Jerry Rollin Sixes.
P.S. Hey Bandit, Sorry if I rambled on but it’s coming to the end of my 15 hr workday and you know how it gets when you are running on empty and what the hell, somebody had to say it. To all the Ladies and Gentlemen (sounds respectable doesn’t it LOL) involved with the Five Ball Racing Team. Godspeed people, Godspeed.

AREA 51–By now, everyone has heard of the Air Force’s ultra-high-security, super-secret base in Nevada, known simply as “Area 51.” Late one afternoon, the Air Force folks out at Area 51 were very surprised to see a Cessna landing at their “secret” base. They immediately impounded the aircraft and hauled the pilot into an interrogation room.
The pilot’s story was that he took off from Vegas, got lost, and spotted the Base just as he was about to run out of fuel. The Air Force started a full FBI background check on the pilot and held him overnight during the investigation.
By the next day, they were finally convinced that the pilot really was lost and wasn’t a spy. They gassed up his airplane, gave him a terrifying “you-did-not-see-a-base” briefing, complete with threats of spending the rest of his life in prison, told him Vegas was that-a-way on such-and-such a heading, and sent him on his way.
The next day, to the total disbelief of the Air Force, the same Cessna showed up again. Once again, the MP’s surrounded the plane . . . only this time there were two people in the plane.
The same pilot jumped out and said, “Do anything you want to me, but my wife is in the plane and you have to tell her where I was last night!”

Nail biting hey,
We have a serious case of Bonnevillittis. We don’t know which way to turn, or what to do next. I spent two days wiring the beast and still have more crap to deal with. Our AIM Sports Data acquisition system is a challenge. Nothing plugs into a Harley. We had to make brackets to run their speedo sensor off the front wheel yesterday and order another pressure sensor, so we can find out if we have oil pressure. And the tach, who knows.
If I reflect the meanderings of a madman, that’s an accurate assessment of my current demeanor. For the last three nights we’ve worked until after 2:00 a.m. I was scrambling because Berry Wardlaw is flying in this afternoon to help and tune. Can’t wait to sit down with him and pow wow about our next move and some of this staged nitrous wiring. Let’s hit the news. I need to make an airport run:

Investigators said the plan was to build a wooden box to hold the snakes, with a lid to hold the victim by his legs.Sowash contacted the Colorado Bureau of Investigation after getting threatening e-mails.
Police said one of the suspects also wanted to kidnap Sowash’s children and use them as leverage to get the money back.

JOHNNY HUMBLE DEFENDS BIG DOG K-9–Mr. Humble, I read your test ride of the 2007 K-9 and I understand that there may be some things that can’t be put into an article. With that said I’d like to ask a few questions about the bike. Did you happen to check Miles Per Gallon on the bike? As far as the passenger, did she feel beat after the test ride? There’s a heck of a difference between 20 mile ride and a 300 mile ride on the back for a passenger. Was it something she’d consider doing again? My wife is small, but if she ain?t happy, nobody’s Happy! Is the spacing between the gears about right or is the 6th a little too tall? As I think that you can legally go 75mph in most states. Have they choked the 2008’s down to meet emissions? I’m kind of kicking around a ?08 K-9, that’s why I’m asking about the test ride.
Thanks! Roger from Nebraska
Roger, The article I wrote was as comprehensive and honest you will find. If the passenger wasn’t comfortable, I promise I would have said so. My wife is used to riding her own Sportster as well as being a passenger on my Heritage Springer and she said she felt just as comfortable on the K-9 as she had on the back of my Springer. We did over 300 miles on that bike and she didn’t have any complaints. Trust me, if she would have been uncomfortable, she would have been bitchin’ and moanin’ louder than the exhaust.
I was averaging around 35 mpg, but I did ride it a little hard. While triple digits aren’t legal, they are easily reached on this bike even with a passenger. To tell you the truth, when I came back home she watched the bank account like a hawk anticipating a draft to Big Dog Motorcycles.
Thanks for taking the time to write and thanks for visiting Bikernet! We truly appreciate it.
Johnny Humble
CITY OF PORTLAND TO PAY $50,000 IN LAWSUITOVER BIKER CLUBHOUSE RAID– The City of Portland, Oregon, will pay $50,000 to settle a lawsuit brought in Federal District Court over a 2004 pre-dawn police tank raid on a local motorcycle clubhouse.
In a multi-agency operation using armored vehicles and tear gas rockets, the 5:30 a.m. raid on July 28, 2004, broke down the front door at the Gypsy Joker Motorcycle Club on NE Martin Luther King Boulevard. The police were there to execute two search and arrest warrants. Only three people were there, none of whom were the subjects of the warrants. After an extensive search resulting in damage to the walls and other structures, nothing illegal was found.
The lawsuit was brought last year by Patrick Murphy, a member of the club, Suzanne Miller, who was injured in the raid, and “Tomorrow RUS Today,” the corporation owning the clubhouse. The police pulled framed photographs off the walls and deliberately smashed them, in addition to damaging other clubhouse property. Mr. Murphy was handcuffed for five hours and released without charges, and Ms. Miller’s foot was injured in the raid. The suit alleged the police used excessive force with tanks and tear gas rockets, and that they damaged clubhouse property without a legitimate purpose.
The suit also alleged the police intended to create “a chilling effect” to discourage people from associating with club members, in violation of the plaintiffs’ First Amendment rights to freedom of association. Attorneys for the city of Portland agreed to allow a judgment against the city to settle the case. The judgment was signed last week by Judge Janice M. Stewart.
“The way the police handled this, it’s as if they were trying to scare people away from the club,” says Sam Hochberg (HOCK-berg), the Portland attorney for the plaintiffs. “Our law enforcement was acting lawlessly,” says Hochberg. “Bikers still get a bad rap from some very dated stereotypes.”
“The club had to take a stand,” says Mark Dencklau (DENK-lau), president of the Portland Gypsy Joker Motorcycle Club. “We needed to tell the police that we won’t be treated as second-class citizens. We won’t sit by and be their target anymore.”
“All we ask is for is common decency, ordinary respect for bikers and their property, and the freedom to be left alone,” says Hochberg.

FROM THE WTF? FILE–Bandit, Altering a motorcycle exhaust is illegal: creating a noise blight on our neighborhoods. Motorcycle owners, and their support groups, have no regard for others rights or the law – a lawless band self centered bad boys, that seem to need attention by being obnoxious… this is totally out of control. Your “study” only supports the freedom of the lawlessness, to take the law into their own hand and disrupt the public. Noise as safety, is a joke!
I have talked to my state representative about impound laws or other punitive measures to shut down this epidemic of noise. This problem is spreading – young drivers hear that motorcycles can make all the noise they want with no penalty, now they are adding loud pipes to their Hondas and Toyotas. Your group should be lobbing for tougher laws, (this will help the few good motorcyclist left). Join in and stop this madness. You know and I know, these people will only comply if they loose their noise makers! Street racing is a thing of the past, now that if cited, their car is crushed. See how fast the mufflers fly back into those Hogs when a few are crushed. Start acting like smart… MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Terry, When car drivers quit talking on cell phones and murdering people I’ll see about a bigger muffler. Show concern for your fellow man’s safety. You don’t know what an epidemic is.

5 BALL RACING TEAM SPONSOR AND BANDIT FIGHT FOR LOUD PIPES —Jester recently contributed to the 5-Ball Racing effort, but his story paints a vivid picture of why loud pipes are essential to our survival, and why we need to fight selfish bastards, such as Terry. We need to be responsible regarding our pipes, but we still need ’em. Read what Jester had to say:
You don’t have to thank me regarding the sponsorship . It’s because of the lady makin a left in front of me that makes this more possible than if it were just up to me. Hell, I’m still alive and on two feet. My injuries are healing better than most have thought they would. Still got issues with the fractures in my head, but my left leg has a new rod in it and my right foot has lots of new pieces in it too. Can’t forget the chipped C5 in my neck which they fused with C6. Hell, in the police report the cop put down that he was going to a dead body, although for the first 3 days after the accident they didn’t know which way I was going, to ICU or the morgue. I’m not who I used to be, but I’m better of than I should be. Good luck to you and the rest of the team on the Salt Flats.
Respectfully,
Jester
Thanks again, Jester. Your contribution, along with everyone else?s is making this effort possible. Your letter also points out why we need loud pipes.

BREATH-TEST EVIDENCE THROWN OUT IN DUI CASES–By Jeff BurlewDemocrat staff writer A Leon County judge’s ruling to throw out blood-alcohol breath-test results in four DUI cases could have a big impact on others currently facing drinking-and-driving charges. On Tuesday, Judge Augustus D. Aikens Jr. ordered that breath tests be thrown out in DUI cases involving four men arrested in 2006. Their breath samples showed blood-alcohol readings above Florida’s legal limit of 0.08.
“At this point, it will potentially stop the prosecution of every DUI case in Leon County that has a breath-test result,” said Tallahassee defense attorney Lee Meadows, who is representing the men.
Meanwhile, State Attorney Willie Meggs said the ruling likely will be appealed.
In his ruling, Aikens found that breath-test results can vary depending on how long someone breathes into the device, called an Intoxilyzer 8000.
Aikens agreed with an earlier Bay County circuit-court ruling, which said, “Rules that permit a test operator to have the subject blow into the machine as long as he, in his undirected discretion wishes … is insufficient to create a scientifically reliable test.”
Meadows plans to file motions today seeking to adopt the ruling for 30-35 other clients he’s representing. He said he expects other local lawyers to do the same thing.
Meggs said he hadn’t seen the ruling, but he said it sounded “odd.” He said the State Attorney’s Office is appealing a number of other rulings by Aikens. Meggs defended the use of the Intoxilyzer.
“We’ve got the newest and best technology out there to determine a person’s blood-alcohol content,” Meggs said. “It’s been approved by FDLE and used all over the country.”

Billy Lane Case Closing In
By Bandit |
In June 2002, motorcycle builder Billy Lane of Melbourne Beach was on top of the world.
He and his team of “gearheads” sold custom-built motorcycles at $30,000 to $40,000 a pop out of his well-established shop, Choppers Inc., on U.S. 1 in Melbourne. The Discovery Channel's motorcycle-themed reality competition series “Monster Garage” had just featured Lane on the show's first installment. He was invited as a featured guest to motorcycle shows and festivals all over Florida and beyond.
Now, the 39-year-old Lane is facing up to nine years in prison on a single felony charge of vehicular homicide in connection with a Labor Day 2006 car crash that left a Melbourne Beach man — also a motorcyclist — dead.
After several delays, Lane is expected in court Tuesday morning to change his not guilty plea. He would then be sentenced at 9 a.m. Aug. 14.
“We did get the written plea agreement in,” defense attorney Greg Eisenmenger told FLORIDA TODAY. “Based on my review of it, I don't anticipate any problems. I anticipate we are good to go Tuesday.”
Lane was charged two years ago with one count of DUI manslaughter in connection with the 2006 traffic accident in which Sebastian Inlet park ranger Gerald Morelock, 56, died.
Police said Lane's blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he crossed a double yellow line to pass slow traffic on State Road A1A south of Melbourne Beach. He crashed his Dodge pickup head on into Morelock's small Yamaha motorcycle on Sept. 4, 2006, police said.
In light of ongoing legal discussions over the permissibility of blood evidence at trial, prosecutors in late December added an alternative charge of vehicular homicide, which requires the state to prove that Lane was driving recklessly but does not include the drug or alcohol element needed to prove DUI manslaughter.
Both charges are second-degree felonies, punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
But under the terms of the plea deal, Eisenmenger said prosecutors will drop the DUI manslaughter charge. Instead, they will seek a nine-year prison term for the vehicular homicide charge, a term Lane is eligible for under state sentencing guidelines when his prior criminal record is considered.
Eisenmenger will seek a sentence that calls for no time in prison.
“We believe there are mitigating factors in this case. . . . And we're going to be presenting those to the court at sentencing,” he said.Since the crash, Lane's public persona has suffered.
A message on his motorcycle shop's Web site says the shop is closed to the public, though merchandise is available for purchase online. Court records indicate that Lane's Melbourne Beach home is going through foreclosure.
Lane reached a confidential out-of-court settlement on a wrongful death suit filed by Morelock's family. Also, records show that Erin Derrick, a 22-year-old woman who was in the car with Lane at the time of the crash, is suing him for injuries she says have rendered her unable to work.
Most people contacted by FLORIDA TODAY declined to comment, but several observers from the motorcycle community said the case has hardly tarnished Lane's celebrity.
Mike Odom, a Melbourne motorcycle photographer who blogs about the case and has attended all but one hearing, said Lane's booth at Biketoberfest 2007 in Daytona Beach attracted a long line, so he decided to informally poll 10 people in line.
“Out of those 10, 50 percent were not aware of what happened, and the other 50 percent were aware but didn't care,” Odom said.
On his blog, Odom said, a lot of reader comments have called for prison time. But there also is a sizeable number of people who want to see a “positive outcome,” such as having Lane build and donate a motorcycle in Morelock's name or do public service announcements about the dangers of drunken driving, Odom said.
“He has enough of a following that people would listen to him,” he said.Like workers at most local businesses that sell motorcycles, Mike Marconi, general manager at Champions Honda in Cocoa, said Lane's custom motorcycle market and the “average Joe” market Marconi caters to are “entirely different.””So most of our customers, they don't talk about it, and I'd guarantee a lot of our customers don't know who Billy Lane is,” Marconi said.Asked to offer his own opinion of the case, he said: “I don't really have a comment. I think the media likes to play it up because he's a known figure. If my parts manager got arrested for the same thing, I don't think we'd be talking about it.”
