Family tracks down late Person County deputy’s motorcycle, surprises his son with it
ROXBORO, N.C. (WTVD) — Many motorcycles make long trips, but one motorcycle’s journey home took more than a decade. This special bike belonged to late Person County deputy Mike Currier, who died from an illness in December 2021. Currier used to take his son Austin on rides on his Harley-Davidson Fat Boy before he was forced to sell it during the difficult financial times of 2008. During the years that passed, the motorcycle came into the possession of several different owners until it was purchased by Currier’s good friend John Walker. During Currier’s hospitalization, Walker worked to track down the bike’s whereabouts with plans to surprise his friend upon his discharge from the hospital. Though Currier died, his motorcycle would not stay lost to his family. Currier’s family pitched in together to buy the long-lost bike back from Walker to surprise Currier’s son Austin, who just bought a new home. Tears of joy fell as the Harley-Davidson, an unforgettable housewarming gift, pulled into Austin’s driveway, finally making its way home.To Stay updated on all Motorcycle News and Events … – simply Click & Subscribe to Bikernet’s FREE Weekly Newsletter
NHDRO’s Three Race “Trilogy” Was Fast Fun in Sun
By Wayfarer |
The Midwest’s largest motorcycle drag racing series—NHDRO—kicked off their 2022 season with the Midwest Race Trilogy—three full races over three days at West Salem, Ohio’s beautiful, sunny Dragway 42.
NHDRO motorcycle drag racing series race coverage report
event: NHDRO’s Midwest Race Trilogy
when: May 13-15, 2022
where: Dragway 42, West Salem, Ohio, USA
Friday Shootouts
“I love the three races in one weekend,” said defending two-class champion Jeremy Teasley. “Because you normally mess up, so you got two more shots. But I ended up winning the first day over my buddy Dave Page. We left together, then his bike had problems.”
Teasley actually had a small .018 advantage over Page at the tree in Friday night’s Schnitz Racing Top Gas 8.20 all-no-bar Shootout final, and was able to cruise across the stripe when Page’s Suzuki Hayabusa went off song at 1000 feet.
“It was a good weekend at the track seeing everyone,” continued Teasley. “The weather was perfect and (NHDRO owners) Brian and Niki Welch did a great job.”
The event also served as a celebration of life for Page’s wife Rhonda, who passed away May 5thafter a courageous battle with cancer. Rhonda, you are missed.
Friday’s Big Show Shootouts were 100% payback races, and in addition to Schnitz Racing Top Gas also included NHDRO Road Course, Delay Box and No-Box Shootouts.
Tom Klemme and Jeremy England ran an awesome wheelie bar (Klemme) vs. no-bar Box Shootout final. In his new root beer and orange leathers, Klemme took the tree by a scant .004 on his matching KZ900 and ran .004 over his 8.84 dial-in for the win.
The No-Box Shootout also came down to a wheelie bar vs. no-bar final, and was also won by a Klemme—Tom’s bother Joe. He faced Teddy Thompson, usually known for riding a slow streetbike to considerable bracket racing success. On this occasion, however, Thompson was riding a piece with a 9.52 second dial-in. He took the tree with an .011 against Klemme’s .058, but broke out while Klemme won dead-on with a .007.
“The win Friday night was great, especially since as a team my brother Tom and I won two of the three shootouts that we entered,” said Joe Klemme.
“The rest of the weekend wasn’t quite as successful (for us). There is some very tough competition out there. That is a good thing and that’s what keeps us coming back.
“As far as the three races in one weekend, I think that is a no-brainer. All the other expenses remain the same. The second and third races are expense free besides entry fees and race vehicle maintenance.
“As always I would like to thank our team KPM: Tom Klemme, John Mealy, and Tim Genung, for everything they do.”
The NHDRO Road Course (instant green, no-time class with road course requirement) final was close for a moment, as a mere .003 separated Carlo Testa and Justin Hodge at the tree. But after that it was all Testa, who took the win by a wide margin.
“It was such a great weekend,” said Testa. “I’ve invested a lot of time and effort, not to mention all the money, into my craft, and the education I’ve received has come by way of all the lumps I’ve taken along the way. I’ve been going to a Dragway 42 since I was in diapers, so it was extra special this past weekend when I got my first win at that race track.
“I knew going in I had as good a chance as anyone of winning the Road Course Shootout. The bike has been so incredibly reliable and consistent for the past four years that I felt I could lean on it a little bit harder and give heads-up racing a shot. It made my job much easier knowing all I have to do is line up straight and cut a light, and the bike will make a clean A to B pass damn near every time.
“I was very lucky to have the help of a great group of teammates: Nino Zana, Joey Brandgard, and Jerome Gordon. Without them I might even forget to put fuel in the bike.
“I want to thank Brian and Niki Welch and family for their hard work and commitment to us racers. Their events are ALWAYS first class. Without folks like the Welch’s, Man Cup’s Jay Regan, and SDBA’s Sonny Vick, motorcycle drag racing wouldn’t be where it is today. Thank you also to Ron and Mary Anne Matcham, and their entire staff for such a great race track. They really make me feel like family every time I’m there. I’m hoping this is the first of many wins to come at my home track, Dragway 42.”
Saturday and Sunday
Testa and his no-bar ‘Busa went on to runner-up in Saturday’s Top Gas final against Bradley Shellhaas and his wheelie bar Kawasaki. Shellhaas took the tree .022 to .047 and went unchallenged from there.
“I was fortunate enough to have several family members travel there to watch this weekend, so those wins always feel more special,” said Bradley. “It also was my son’s ninth birthday, so he provided me with the luck when I needed it. No winlight was possible without my dad (Brad) building the most reliable and consistent antique that a rider could ever ask for. That bike makes my job easier and myself more confident than I ever should be on the track.”
No-Bar Shootout runner-up England nailed a .007 Bond Bulb on O’Dell Williams in Sunday’s Top Gas final, offsetting Williams’ 8.209 ET for the win.
“This weekend was a great start to the season for me,” said England. “I showed up Friday with my new bike and I hadn’t had a chance to use the nitrous much this season. So Friday morning, me and David Ligouri worked diligently to make the bike happy using nitrous, and within a couple runs it was working great. So I took a swing at 8.20 and went 8.177 at 179 mph.
“I left that tune alone and used it all weekend. It ran 8.16-8.18 all weekend long. This is my first no-bar Top Gas bike and I couldn’t be happier with it, showing up and winning the first weekend out. With a runner-up Friday in the Box shootout, 9.30 semifinal on Saturday, Pro ET semi and the Top Gas win on Sunday, I feel pretty good about my performance.
“I have the FuelTech plug ‘n play harness from David Ligouri and Ryan Schnitz, and man has that turned out to be a phenomenal system them guys created. I owe a huge thanks to David for his efforts with my motorcycle, Dave Page for building me a top flight engine every time, Marcus McBain for a killer shock combo, Dustin Lee for unbelievable clutch support, and Tim Hailey for being here with excellent coverage of the event.
“The next NHDRO is in my backyard at Edgewater Motorsports Park and I cannot wait to be there.”
Jeremy’s brother, Andrew “The Big Island” England, gave up .028 at the tree but still pulled out Saturday’s MPS Pro ET win against Perry Sowers in the final.
“Was a blast like always,” Andrew said about his weekend. “My first big win in the NHDRO and I was super pumped about it. Could not have done it with out the help of my dad Butch, my mom Anita, and my bother Jeremy. Had a hard road to get there, a lot of .00 stripes. Just lucky it fell my way.”
Not that he needs much luck, but Greg Mallett received heaps of it on Sunday. Kyle “Dolemite” Dolamore redlit by -.003 in the MPS Pro ET final, and David Beshara made it even easier for Mallett in the MTC Super Comp final when his bike pulled through the beams on the 2-step. That made for two wins for former Top Gas champ Mallett.
“Being the first race of the year for me, I really struggled Friday and Saturday,” said Mallett. “My lights weren’t consistent and I wasn’t riding well. I knew I needed to improve on Sunday or I’d be going home early. I worked a little harder, had a few lucky rounds, and things fell into place.
“It’s always helpful to have Dustin Lee, David Liguori, and Dan Rudd help me with my program. Those guys are the best at what they do!
“Dragway 42 is a great facility. I always enjoy racing there. Brian, Niki, and their crew do a top notch job at every event!”
Defending two-class champion Marty White also scored two wins at Dragway 42, both of them in M2.Shocks 8.70 Quick Street
Saturday’s Quick Street final was a true battle of titans—White vs. veteran rider Big Joe Holt. The champ’s .015 advantage at the tree was pretty much all he needed, as both bikes ran 8.73s to give White the win.
Sunday’s QST final was like a replay for White, but with a different bike and rider in the other lane. Eric Yost gave up .024 at the tree, ensuring another White win when both bikes ran 8.77s.
Young Chanston Moll was able to take the tree and the stripe against Sunday’s Super Comp runner-up Beshera in Saturday’s MTC Super Comp final.
“It was awesome to just get out there and have fun with family and friends!” said 20 year-old Moll. “The bike was super consistent every pass. I knew as long as I kept cutting a good light then I would be able to make it rounds. I also couldn’t have done it without all the help from Crow and Jeremy Teasley. They’re awesome, always there to help out when I need it!”
Jim Swanger grabbed an .044 advantage at the tree against Justin Blackford to give himself some easing room at the stripe for Saturday’s Advanced Sleeve Dirty 30 win.
Sunday’s Dirty 30 race was closer, with Jeff Hall taking the tree by .016 against Drew Nearhoof, who ran a click closer to the number with a 9.35. Still, Hall’s 9.36 took the stripe in the 9.30 index class.
“I’ve been following NHDRO since 2010, have been in many finals and semifinals, and have been number one qualifiers in several events, and this is my first win,” said Hall. “Been a long time coming. My goal was to win one of these races with a THC (True Hand Clutch) bike, and I finally did it.
“I would like to that Dave Page for building my motors throughout the years. If it wasn’t for him this wouldn’t be possible. He takes care of us at all costs. Would like to thank my son Jaden Hall for all the hard work and countless hours helping me work on these machines. And would like to thank Brian and Niki Welch for providing us with the series and continuing to put on the events for us to race in the Midwest. And of course, would like to thank the man Tim Hailey for the amazing photos and awesome coverage!”
Kevin Adams didn’t find the Friday success he was looking for but came through on Saturday for the Kevin Dennis Insurance Street ET win. Kevin’s 9.32 dial-in had to wait over three seconds on Jim Messing’s 12.55, but Adams did his job well with a .126 advantage at the tree that virtually secured the win.
Cincinnati’s Jay Hunter had an easy Street ET final round on Sunday when opponent Josh Costa redlit by -.012. “The track was great, the crew was real good, can’t wait till the next one,” said Hunter, a man of few words.
Riding his dad Ryan’s turbo ‘Busa, Trevor Schnitz was able to win Pro Street on what is essentially a well-tuned Top Gas bike. Schnitz took the tree with a sharp .013 and breezed to a 7.74 at 183 mph win while final round opponent Rob Aston spun in the other lane on his proper PST turbo ‘Busa.
“It was surreal,” said Trevor. “It was not only great to race in the class, but to win the class felt like a dream. I had a lot of help from many amazing people, the most important being my dad and grandfather (Dave). They have helped me grow and become a great racer. Trust me, this is just the beginning.”
VooDoo Grudge was seriously curtailed when heavy showers shut the track down for the night just before dark on Saturday night.
Pro Ultra 4.60 fell short of the number needed to run the class, but champion Dan McCarten won a run-off against Heath McQuinn.
Niki and Brian Welch are excited about the #NHDROohiosummer and are looking forward to seeing every member of the NHDRO family at the APE Raceparts Summer Reunion at Edgewater Sports Park just outside of Cincinnati on July 15-17.

THE LEADER BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for May 19th, 2022

Hey,
As you know life is nuts and has been headed downhill fast. When I’m forced to sit and ponder this American trial, I come to one major conclusion: Leadership. We need leadership, but we don’t need just political leadership. We need media leadership and this news item popped onto the screen today. Sounded like a breath of fresh air and maybe scientific transparency will abound. We can hope. Here’s a clip:
New CNN president announces different direction for network, vows to be a ‘beacon’ for journalism
Perhaps no company has had a worse year than CNN, but according to its new president, Chris Licht, the network will be turning away from cable news “extremism” in a bid to become a “beacon” for journalism.
Speaking at the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront presentation at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Licht announced a new direction for the embattled network, who’s multi-million-dollar CNN+ streaming service folded just weeks after it launched, Variety reported.
Licht stated that he saw the mega-merger between Warner Bros., formerly CNN’s parent company, and media giant Discovery, as an opportunity to chart a new path in a sea of cable news competitors, such as Fox News Channel and MSNBC, who Licht sees as partisan.

BIKERNET NEWS RELEASE–Keith Ball’s Bikernet Blog Website Breaks into World’s Top 25 Motorcycle Sites
Deadwood SD – May 16, 2022 – Bikernet.com’s Blog, the brainchild of publisher, writer and freedom fighter Keith Ball, reached #25 in Feedspot’s list of the 100 top motorcycle blogs and websites earlier this year.
The Bikernet Blog, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, was one of the first sites to focus on the custom motorcycle market. It now includes not only custom bikes of all brands, but also technical material, travel information, legislative updates and commentary on issues of importance to motorcycle riders. Bikernet’s editorial approach is to provide the perfect mix of motorcycle hardware and culture, along with imagery that captures the artistry of custom and performance motorcycles and the people who ride them.
“Bikernet has consistently been ranked in the Top 30 sites on the Feedspot list, and this year we made it to #25 in the rankings, ahead of many well-known titles,” said Ball. “We don’t care if we’re considered relevant or not. We just do and publish what we love, and hope to ride free till the end.”
Ball’s background is as varied as the site. He’s a Viet Nam-era Navy veteran who served as an electronics technician on a heavy cruiser, then, upon his return to civilian life, he was a staffer and editor at a host of motorcycling and automotive titles. He eventually became Executive VP for Paisano Publications. His understanding of motorcycles and the motorcycling culture helped him develop and lead publications like Easyriders and In The Wind, which became the top newsstand titles in the industry, along with Hot Bike, Hot Rod Bikes, Quick Throttle, American Rider, Street Chopper and several other titles.
Ball’s resume is lengthy. He drove the founding and growth of motorcycle rights organization ABATE and was appointed as National Director of the organization. His motorcycling experience has made him a draw for top TV shows including roles as a team member in Monster Garage and as a judge on American Chopper. ABC News interviewed Ball for newsmagazine show 20/20. His racing resume includes being part of four successful motorcycle land speed record attempts and his honors include induction into the Sturgis Museum’s Hall of Fame (2006), Las Vegas Motorcycle Hall of Fame (2016), the Motorcycle Riders Foundation Hall of Fame (2018) and the Cycle Source Man of the Year (2006).
“Breaking into the Top 25 is a great honor for our site,” Ball continued. “But our mission won’t change. We’ll continue to provide a great mix of bikes, racing news, tech and opinion pieces to entertain people who love building and riding custom bikes.”

NEWS FROM THE NMA–Motor City should be Renamed Speed Hump City
The city of Detroit recently identified more than 2,000 new speed hump locations. The plan is to install 3,000 of the traffic obstacles by the end of 2022.
That is in addition to the 5,500 humps added throughout the city in 2021. When this street obstacle program started as part of Detroit’s Complete Streets program, the city only had 400 in place. If plans meet expectations, Detroit will have more than 10,500 speed humps to disrupt traffic before 2023.
Should Detroit’s nickname be changed to reflect the new reality?
Speed humps are different than speed bumps and cushions. They are generally 12 to 14 feet long, spanning the width of the road and ranging from three to four inches high. The shapes can be parabolic, circular, or sinusoidal. Speed humps are typically placed on residential streets, mid-block between intersections. One is often deemed insufficient.
A series of two or three speed humps set 350 to 550 feet apart are commonplace to prevent drivers from speeding up between them. Warning signs are typically displayed ahead of the road hazard. Even with the signs, the lower visibility conditions of bad weather, or dawn/dusk can cause some very unpleasant surprises for drivers on speed hump streets.
This graphic comes from California Member Stacey Charlton, who wrote How to Fight Speed Bumps, Humps, and Cushions Part 1 and Part 2 that was featured in December 2021 on the NMA’s Driving in America Blog.
Detroit’s public works department uses the following criteria for the placement of speed humps:
- Local residential streets with speed limits of 25 mph or less
- Nearby schools and parks
- Streets with a record of speeding and traffic accidents
- Streets with cut-throughs to or from arterial roads
- Areas with block housing density
- Areas with numbers of children present
- Resident support on the block and a valid request made to the city
While some neighbors might like the speed humps, not all do. Detroit resident Pamela Foster exclaimed, “It’s too many of them…they’re putting them in spots that we don’t need.” Often the residents reconsider after the humps have been in place for a while and have to be dealt with daily. Be careful what you wish for.
It will be interesting watching for reactions by Detroit commuters as the hump count continues to grow.
Is this a safety measure or motorists profiling in the wars on cars, which includes motorcycles.–Bandit?
CHIX on 66 Presented by Harley-Davidson–
Teams Up with Road Guardians/Accident Scene Management
Riveter Chapter of the AMCA welcomes Road Guardians/Accident Scene Management as a Chix on 66 ride sponsor. As a result of this sponsorship, Chix on 66 will be able to provide live entertainment for an event taking place during the ride on Sunday, June 12, in Pontiac, Illinois.
Chix on 66 is a cross-country ride being held June 11-25, comprising 40 women that will follow the entirety of Route 66 from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, adhering to the original alignment to the extent possible.
For every day of the two-week, 2,500-mile journey, the group will begin and end together, but each woman can make the journey into what she wants it to be. The route will cover anywhere from 100 to 300 miles per day, with most days around 200 miles, allowing for an easy pace and ample time to stop for photos of the iconic points of interest along the Mother Road.
Riveter Chapter President Karan Andrea says, “I am doubly pleased with the support we have received from Road Guardians/Accident Scene Management. While the company leads the industry in accident scene training and motorcycle safety, co-founder Vicki Sanfelipo is a Riveter Chapter Board member.”

WHEELS THROUGH TIME MUSEUM OPENING–Dale’s Wheels Through Time is open for the 2022 season, and we can’t wait to see you! The museum’s hours are Thursday through Monday, 10AM to 5PM, and closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
When you visit this year, one of the first new things you’ll see is the “Kennybuilt 9-Wheel Harley Rig.” A completely custom-built machine, it pays homage to the familiar Harley-Davidson Factory Semis.
Many of you have probably already seen the video where we took the Miller Light plane out of the museum, fired it for the first time in museum history, and Matt taxied it through the parking lot. If you haven’t seen it, be sure to check it out on our YouTube page. After filming, we placed the plane into an all-new exhibit that displays it in a way that pays honor to its history and purpose. We have also enhanced our “Homemade in America” exhibit, which features a variety of custom-made machines and inventions powered using Harley and Indian motors.
And of course, our newest exhibit, “The King of Old Motorcycles: Dale Walksler, The Man Behind the History,” has had an overwhelming response! Giving you a chronological look at the life of Museum Founder Dale Walksler, this exhibit features never before seen photos, a biographical timeline, and select motorcycles that were keystone moments in his life.

SEMA ACTION NETWORK NEWS–Court Allows Lawsuit Protecting Off-Roading at Oceano Dunes to be Heard
A San Luis Obispo County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of the nonprofit organization Friends of Oceano Dunes, allowing a “quiet title” lawsuit against the California Coastal Commission (CCC), California State Parks, and other government groups to move forward. The suit contends that off-roading and camping access to Oceano Dunes is protected by an “implied-by-law dedication” since off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts and campers recreated on the land for decades before the government entities acquired the properties.
A quiet title lawsuit is usually brought against a private landowner in a dispute over who owns the land. Friends of Oceano Dunes, however, is not disputing who owns the land but rather that the land was specifically designated for use for beach driving and camping. The case is set for trial in March 2023.

From the excruciating process of handpicking participants over the winter, including new and returning racers, the BTR crew assisted each woman in the “Build” phase of the program. Generous sponsorship comes from Parts Unlimited, S&S Cycle, Harris Performance, Dunlop, Maxima Racing Oils, BOXO USA, Öhlins USA Suspension and Arai Helmets.
Each of the 15 participants received a Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 motorcycle that they spent three months designing and building. The “Train” phase included a recent test session at Barber Motorsports Park with Sportbike Track Time, where the BTR Road Race women all got on the track together for the first time.
With some guidance and mentorship from Melissa Paris, racers were able to dial in their Continental GT 650 motorcycles, and the entire field demonstrated that they are ready to race.
“It was so nice to get to meet all of my new teammates and see the returning ladies, who have become close friends of mine,” said returning rider Trisha Dahl (31, Minneapolis, Minnesota). “I’m proud of how fast I’ve progressed, but this new crop of ladies has far more experience, and it shows. Our first race is coming fast, and competition will be fierce, but we’re all coming together as a team to represent Royal Enfield North America, and it will be a beautiful sight when we all line up on that grid for the first time this season.”
For first-time participants such as Jessica Martin (38, Savannah, Georgia), the upcoming VIR race is fast arriving. “The opening round seemed so far away, now it’s here and I’m overcome with emotions,” said Martin. “The Build and Train portions were very encouraging and confidence inspiring. You could say I believe in me more than I ever have. The camaraderie among the team is what stands out most. We are here to help each other reach our goals, while also competing. It’s very amazing, intense and enlightening. And now, it’s go time!”
Above all else, the Build. Train. Race. paddock represents an atmosphere of support and encouragement for women racers, nurturing talent and inspiring both new and veteran riders to get out on the track. In a hotbed of national-level competition, the inviting nature of BTR continues to attract the attention of fans, industry and sponsors to the unique concept, now in its second year within the MotoAmerica FIM North American Road Race Championship.

Red Cross to Install Free Smoke Alarms in Baldwin Park–
As Part of National Effort to End Home Fires
LOS ANGELES, May 12, 2022 — On Saturday May 14, the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region will install free smoke alarms for Baldwin Park residents. This effort is part of a national Red Cross initiative called Sound the Alarm with the goal to install 50,000 free smoke alarms in more than 50 at-risk communities across the country this May. Baldwin Park was chosen based on the number of fire incidents in the community over the past three years. The presence of a working smoke alarm in a home reduces the risk of dying in a fire by 50%.
WHAT:
Sound the Alarm kickoff with remarks and volunteer training, followed by smoke alarm installations at area homes where volunteer teams will also discuss home fire safety with families.
WHERE:
Esther Snyder Community Center (4100 Baldwin Park Blvd.)
WHEN:
May 14, 9:30 – 10 a.m. (kickoff);
smoke alarm installations at area homes to follow until 2 p.m.
WHO:
Joanne Nowlin – CEO for the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region
Erica Frausto – Executive Director of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys
Office of Mayor Emmanuel J. Estrada – City of Baldwin Park
Councilmember Paul C. Hernandez – City of Baldwin Park
“Our goal is to save lives,” said Joanne Nowlin, CEO for the Red Cross Los Angeles. “That’s why we want to make sure everyone has working smoke alarms, which can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half.”
In 2022 alone, Red Cross LA has supported more than 670 people following 140 home fires. Most recently, the Red Cross responded to an apartment fire in East Los Angeles during Mother’s Day weekend. The volunteers helped more than 17 people displaced by opening an emergency shelter as well as providing food, water and other services as they begin the recovery process.
“Most people don’t realize they only have two minutes to escape a home fire — and that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years,” Nowlin said. “Taking action with this knowledge can be the difference between survival and tragedy.”
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED— Event volunteers are needed to install smoke alarms and share fire safety information with families during May. Register at SoundTheAlarm.org to join a rewarding day of giving back in Inglewood on May 20 and in Long Beach or Montebello on May 21. No prior experience is needed — training will be provided. You can also make a financial donation to the Red Cross to help people prepare for, respond to and recover from home fires.
LOS ANGELES JOINS NATIONAL SOUND THE ALARM EFFORT This Sound the Alarm event is part of a national Red Cross initiative in May to install 50,000 free smoke alarms with partners in more than 50 at-risk communities across the country. Sound the Alarm events are a critical part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 1, 275 lives since launching in October 2014. As part of the campaign in Los Angeles, Red Cross LA volunteers and local partners have installed more than 52,000 free smoke alarms and made more than 17,600 households safer.
This work is made possible thanks to generous financial donations from regional partners: Southern California Edison, Howmet Aerospace Foundation, SoCalGas and Cedars Sinai.

SONG OF THE WEEK–
Album: A Sailor’s Guide to Earth (2016)
* Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards
Don’t turn mailboxes into baseballs
Don’t get busted selling at seventeen
Most thoughts deserve two or three more
Motoroil is motoroil
Just keep the engine clean
Keep your eyes on the prize
Everything will be fine
Long as you stay in school
Stay off the hard stuff
And keep between the lines
Don’t burn two lanterns at the same time
No ship out on the water or the field we’re in
‘Cause you live and you learn
Sometimes you get burned
When you get out, done got up
Walked out the door and went
Do as I say
Don’t do as I’ve done
It don’t have to be
Like a father, like a son
Don’t let them try to upsell you
There’s a reason they make chocolate and vanilla, too
If there’s any doubt, then there is no doubt
The gut don’t never lie
And the only word you’ll ever need to know in life is, why
Keep your head out of the clouds
And remember to be kind
And just stay in school
Stay off the drugs
And keep between the lines

noun
a devotee of archery; archer.
WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF TOXOPHILITE?
Toxophilite “a devotee of archery” is based on the term Toxophilus “bow-lover,” which Roger Ascham coined for his book of the same name published in 1545. Toxophilus is based on Ancient Greek tóxon “bow” and phílos “loving, dear,” the latter of which we learned about from the recent Word of the Day philtrum.
If you were wondering whether tóxon is related to the English word toxic, you have good instincts! Toxic ultimately comes from Ancient Greek toxikòn (phármakon) “bow (poison),” that is, poison used on arrows. Tóxon may be related to or derived from an Iranian source; compare Persian takhsh “cross-bow, arrow.” Toxophilite was first recorded in English circa 1790.
HOW IS TOXOPHILITE USED?
Apollo used to be an Olympic-class archer, a toxophilite of the first rank, until he took a bribe from a betting syndicate and blew a contest he should have won easily.

The School has honored their first graduating class of eight motorcycle technicians. The graduates successfully completed 360 hours of hands-on training and classroom sessions to become wrench-ready for their technician careers. An amazing 87.5% of these graduates were immediately placed into full-time roles in surrounding dealerships.
“The chemistry of the students with the instructors in this course was truly inspirational” said Doug Jackson, Woodstock Harley-Davidson/KTM/Triumph General Manager, and Midwest Motorcycle Mechanic School Leader. “The students have all improved greatly in proficiency and have vastly increased their knowledge of the motorcycle service industry. The difference in the student’s skills prior to this course versus today is nothing less than sensational.”
“After my dad surprised me with my first bike, I fell in love with riding,” says Class of 2022 graduate Amber. “I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. When I picked up a wrench, it just felt right.”
Slated to start in Fall 2022, Midwest Motorcycle Mechanic School is now enrolling students for their next class at the Woodstock, IL campus. For more information on the Midwest Motorcycle Mechanic School enrollment, click here:

Bikers Inside the Beltway
Yesterday, bikers from across the country arrived on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to meet with lawmakers and staff to discuss important motorcycling issues.
Over 200 congressional offices from Alaska to Georgia met face to face with motorcycle advocates on topics like profiling, autonomous vehicles, ethanol and transportation funding. Both in the Senate and House of Representatives bikers answered questions about our priorities and encouraged lawmakers to defend our freedoms.
Our work in D.C. would be impossible without the time and effort MRF members expend coming to our nation’s capital. Thank you to all that made the trip, and truly make the MRF the voice of the street rider in Washington D.C.!
I am working on a new style old school basket that uses a newer chain drive style clutch pack, and the basket will be a 68 tooth with a 43 tooth front pulley and be a little smaller in diameter.
This will also use the 138-tooth belt so there is more adjustment for the tin primary customers.

High winds from May 12 storm caused damage statewide
SIOUX FALLS, SD – After severe weather, such as the windstorm that roared across South Dakota on May 12, workers and others involved in storm cleanup may face hazards related to falls, downed power lines and sharp debris as they conduct recovery and cleanup operations.
Employers and workers should also be aware of heat illness and hazards from equipment used during response/recovery operations, such as chain saws.
“The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reminds workers and employers to pause and evaluate hazards, safety procedures and the need for appropriate personal protective equipment during response and recovery operations,” said OSHA Area Director Sheila Stanley in Sioux Falls. “Hazards can be minimized with safe work practices, training and proper planning.”
- Evaluating work areas for hazards.
- Using engineering or work practice controls to minimize hazards.
- Wearing proper clothing and use personal protective equipment.
- Assuming all power lines are live.
- Using portable generators, saws, ladders, vehicles and other equipment properly.
- Following safety precautions in traffic work zones.
- Using fall protection when working at heights over 6 feet.
- Proper use of portable generators, saws, ladders, vehicles and other equipment such as front-end loaders and skid steers.
OSHA’s Response and Recovery page has additional information to assist in planning cleanup work safely.

We can never make Peace in the outer world until we make Peace with ourselves.
–Dalai Lama
Today I let go of any stress, confusion, or discord. I no longer allow old beliefs, thought and habits of the past rule my world. I trust in the Infinite Power within to make my way clear. I remind myself of the choices I have of who I want to be and I am clear that my Life is one of Joy and Peace.
Remaining in the Consciousness of Oneness that my every need is met physically, mentally, and spiritually I accept this supply with deep gratitude. Anytime I feel the need I stop and go within and find the answer. As Rumi wrote “the universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are.
Today Say: There is no better place to be than right here and right now. I Live in the present expressing my very best. I move forward with ease and grace having Faith and Trust in the Great Power within to dissipate any obstruction or challenge. I give thanks for my Truth and cherish the Peace and Order of this moment and every moment from here on. As it is written “the Lord is my Shepard and I shall not want” I move through my day in complete Faith.
And So It Is

This letter may be a little late in coming, but the Long Road is still 2 months to the day away and hopefully many of you have a flexible schedule or an easy going boss.
The 14th edition of the Long Road will continue to be a two night/stop ride. The feedback from the two-night format last year was all great. We picked great places to visit and do a short ride or two before we pack our gear and move on. This also gives breakdowns a chance to play catch-up. Of course, we’ll continue the “ Gypsy” style ride where we ride with as many or few others as we see fit.
The registration this year is $48. which includes a t-shirt, two nights use of the Planet Chopper roadhouse in Woodlawn, Virginia, beverages at The Rebel Spirit custom motorcycle shop in Thomasville, NC on Saturday, July 23rd and a catered meal when we return to Planet Chopper that evening.
Note: there is trailer parking available at Planet Chopper, call John Devonshire at 276-233-6974 to make arrangements.
For this years’ Long Road, there is a “Pre-Party” where those who are available and want to hang out for a couple of extra days. We will meet Friday July 15th at Soo Locks Campground located at 1001 E Portage Ave, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
To make camping site reservations their number is 906-632-3191.
They are charging $35per night, but they allow up to 3 tents and 6 people on one site. Phone to make reservations. We will stay both Friday and Saturday night, departing Sunday the 17th for the “official” start. We will traverse the Mackinaw suspension bridge and run along the west side of Lake Huron in our journey.
Mention “Long Road” when you get to the campground and expect to pay $10. at the office. Our spots are already reserved in the group camping area.
419-684-7177
Up to six people per tent site at $32./night. Cabins are available. Talk to Heidi and mention “Long Road” for 10% discount.
Wednesday, July 20, it’s a full day ride south on the scenic roads of Ohio, then a little east towards Fayetteville, West Virginia, near the New River Gorge bridge, staying two nights at Rifrafters Campground 448 Laurel Creek Rd. Fayetteville, WV 25840
304-574-1065
$15./ night tent space and cabins are also available. Call for availability. We will stay for two nights (Wed the 20th and Thurs July 21st to soak in the scenery and enjoy the activities in the local area.
On Friday we ride to Planet Chopper roadhouse at 1203 Woodlawn Rd., Woodlawn, Virginia 24381 276-233-6974 for Friday and Saturday night (July 22-23). On Saturday we’re meeting up at The Rebel Spirit custom motorcycle shop for some beverages at the red bar/table that used to be the centerpiece of the Long Road Lounge at Smokeout.
We then return to Planet Chopper for an awesome catered meal and more cheer before we head back home Sunday.
To guarantee you a t-shirt, please register by June 25th. It also helps us to know what numbers of people we can expect for the planning part of the ride.

An Old Golfer was hitting his ball from near a water hazard and his club fell into the water.
When he cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, “Why are you sad?”
The golfer replied that his club had fallen into the water and he needed the club to have a chance to win the tournament and supplement his meager pension.
The Lord went down into the water and reappeared with a solid gold club.
“Is this your club?” the Lord asked.
The golfer replied, “No.”
The Lord again went down and came up with a sterling silver club.
“Is this your club?” the Lord asked.
Again, the golfer replied, “No.”
The Lord went down again and came up with an old iron club.
“Is this your club?” the Lord asked.
The golfer replied, “Yes Lord, that’s it!”
The Lord was pleased with the golfer’s honesty and gave him all three clubs to keep,
and the golfer won his tournament and went home happy.
Sometime later, the golfer was walking with his wife along the water hazard, and she fell into the lake.
When he cried out, the Lord again appeared and asked him,
“Now Why are you sad?”
“Oh, Lord, my wife has fallen into the water!”
The Lord went into the water and reappeared with Kate Upton.
“Is this your woman?” the Lord asked.
“Yes,” cried the golfer.
The Lord was furious. “You lied! That is an untruth!”
The golfer replied,
“Oh, forgive me Lord. It is a misunderstanding.
“You see, if I had said ‘No’ to Kate Upton, you would have come up with Jennifer Anniston.
“Then if I said, ‘No to her, you would have come up with my wife. “Had I then said ‘Yes,’ you would have given me all three.
“And Lord, I am an old man not able to take care of all three women in a way that they deserve… so that’s why I said ‘Yes’ to Kate Upton.”
And God was pleased.
The moral of this story is:
If a golfer ever tells a lie, it is for a good and honorable reason, and only out of consideration for others.

The California legislature is considering a bill that would create a pilot program allowing six cities to issue exhaust noise tickets using noise detection cameras. These cameras work similarly to red light and speed cameras and are being tested in other cities around the country. Contrary to some media reports, the bill has not passed the legislature. As of this writing, it awaits consideration on the Senate floor and must then still pass the Assembly before moving to Gov. Gavin Newsom for final approval or veto.
More importantly, the bill does not change California’s existing exhaust noise laws, which is based on SEMA’s model bill. The law limits cars and trucks to 95-decibels of exhaust noise when tested using an objective SAE International procedure. Motorists that receive a ticket would still have the ability to have their vehicle tested by the Referee to determine compliance. A court may then use the test result to dismiss the ticket.
After exiting and disappointing dealers and bike owners, now Sales figures for end of Financial Year March 2022 shows H-D is again Number One in Sales of Top-End Motorcycles in India – motorcycles having engine capacity above 1000cc.
Unlike last time, when some entry-level models such as Street 750, Iron 883, and Forty-Eight were assembled locally – all of the models are fully-imported from overseas.
Another surprise was – highest selling models were not these entry-level models as in the past. This time 1000cc+ models clocked a big majority of sales.
Out of Total Sales of 601, the number of 1000cc plus models sold was 531 units – mostly of the new Pan America 1250 adventure tourer and Sportster S.
Note: In India, financial year runs from April 2021 to March 2022. Let’s see if petrol and commodity prices change anything in the Q1 and Q2 of FY-2023.

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
“Undiluted Atheism, theft and immorality…. I know of no language sufficiently potent to express fully my absolute detestation of what I believe to be the most poisonous doctrine ever put forward, namely Socialism.”
— His Grace the Duke of Rutland.
“Let all parties then unite to defeat this insidious Socialism which is threatening the country, and take immediate steps to expose and bring it to light. The country may truly be said to be sleeping over a veritable volcano which the next general election may precipitate, unless steps are taken at once to bring this nightmare into the light of day and force it out of its creeping nocturnal habits.”
— Mr. Dudley S. A. Cosby in the Westminster Review.
HANG ON!—Working on the Pandemic. The clutch sticks. The belt might be too tight, preventing the trans from shifting. I’ve spoken to three master mechanics and received valuable insight, which we will impart in a detailed tech next week.
Buck Lovell is shooting the Pandemic for Cycle source. Mike Stevenson a Hamster, chopper builder is working on a story about converting to a trike. This is heavy business for a guy who rode choppers all his life.
Next historic bike feature. The NELK- 1905- a unicorn- one of a kind. Shop burned down and this was the only surviving machine. Don Whalen the founder of Sierra Madre Motorcycle Company has the story details. “To me it combines elements of Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, — circles, cylinders, kidney shapes. Beautiful wood rims and grips,” said Markus Cuff, master photographer.
I’m also working on the second Chopper Chronicles story, which is a trip. But first I must question every aspect of this story line and challenge all my original assertions. WTF over?
Robert Pandya stopped by for dinner and whiskey last night. He is now the new COO of the Buffalo Chip. Hang on for changes at the City of the Chip. I can still feel the peanut-butter whiskey.
I’m also working on the first tech for the Irish Rich VL frame build with an S&S Knucklehead engine and I’m hoping to be able to install an Evo 5-Speed transmission. It’s my first build in my new Black Hills home, as soon as the fucking shop is finished.
Lee Clemens from Departure Bike Works sent this highly modified S&S B carb and an intake manifold. I need a few more parts to make it complete for our Bonneville effort, the Salt Torpedo.
As you can see, it’s all nuts. But we’re making progress, goddammit!

Harley-Davidson’s 2nd Generation Serial-1 E-bikes going big on software
By Wayfarer |
Harley-Davidson’s updated Serial 1 e-bikes will feature Google Cloud connectivity
Most of the major changes are under the surface
by Andrew J. Hawkins from https://www.theverge.com/
Serial 1, the electric bike company spun out of Harley-Davidson, launched its second-generation lineup of premium e-bikes — but the biggest changes will be coming to the company’s app.
The updated bikes will come with a host of new software features provided by Serial 1’s new partnership with Google Cloud. The company says that Google Cloud has selected Serial 1 as its new “strategic eMobility partner,” meaning the e-bike maker will be among the first to integrate Google’s software products into its vehicles.
The software-enabled e-bikes will allow owners to track their trips, collect data, and “significantly improve safety and security,” Serial 1 says. It reflects a trend in the e-bike industry to install bikes with cloud-connected software as an additional selling point.
The centerpiece of the new partnership will be the Serial 1 app, in which owners can see turn-by-turn navigation, collect ride data, and control security features on their bike. Serial 1 is promising more high-tech features to come thanks to the company’s “access to Google Cloud analytics and business intelligence and integration with Google Cloud AI functionality.”
Google Cloud will also ensure a stronger connection between the bike and the user’s smartphone. Most e-bikes use Bluetooth to connect to a smartphone app, but Serial 1’s bikes will use cellular and GPS technology, in addition to Bluetooth, to ensure owners can connect to their bikes even when they are not in their line of sight.
Just a quick refresher: Serial 1 is a standalone electric bike company that spun out from Harley-Davidson in October 2020. Its current lineup includes four bikes, ranging in price from $3,399 to $4,999. The brand names are Mosh/Cty, a city bike, and the commuter Rush/Cty, which comes in three variants (regular, Step-Thru, and Speed). Each comes with a mid-drive motor capable of generating 250W of continuous power and hitting top speeds of 20mph — except for the Rush/Cty Speed, which can go 28mph.
The powertrains will be the same in the second-generation bikes. Most of the major changes are under the surface. These include improved security features, such as flashing lights, disabled pedal-assist functionality, and real-time locations.
The Serial 1 app will integrate with Google Maps to provide better navigation, for example, by prioritizing routes with bike lanes. Serial 1’s simplified digital displays are supplied by Brose, a German company that also makes the bike’s powertrain, so users will likely have to mount their smartphones on the handlebars to benefit from these types of features.
The app will also feature a “virtual garage” in which owners can name, track, and digitally manage their e-bikes. This will include a new dashboard for owners to monitor their bike’s ride data, including speed, distance, range, power output (both for the rider and the battery), efficiency, and state-of-charge, among other metrics. Serial 1 owners can record their rides to learn more about their performance and progress. And the app will provide automatic service updates when their bikes are in need of a tune-up.
The physical look and controls for the second-generation bikes will remain largely the same. I loved the bikes when I got to test them out last year. The same team that developed the batteries for Harley-Davidson electric LiveWire motorcycles also developed batteries for Serial 1. The integrated batteries are mounted very low on the frame, which helps with the mass centralization and improved handling.
With this new update, it’s clear Serial 1 is taking aim at major manufacturers like Giant, Trek, and Specialized, which sell premium e-bikes for high-end customers. Specialized, in particular, has been touting the connected software in its Turbo lineup. And like Harley-Davidson, the company just announced that it was spinning out its own brand called Globe that will exclusively focus on utility e-bikes.

Twin Power Launches Expanded Line of Crankshaft Position Sensors

Twin Power Launches Expanded Line of Crankshaft Position Sensors for Harley-Davidson Motorcycles
Fort Worth TX — May 17, 2022 – TwinPower today announced a new line of Crankshaft Position Sensors (CPS) including seven-part numbers with fitments for Harley-Davidson models dating from the 1999 model year through current models using the Milwaukee 8 engine. TwinPower was the first aftermarket company to create a line of these OEM-quality sensors and today’s launch is a significant expansion of the company’s CPS offering.
The Crankshaft Position Sensor is a critical part of a Harley’s engine management system. It delivers crankshaft position data to the bike’s electronic control module, which in turn determines engine timing and fuel delivery. A motorcycle with a faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor will typically have inconsistent performance and difficulty starting.
“When a crankshaft position sensor goes bad, your bike isn’t going anywhere,” said James Simonelli, Brand Manager for Twin Power. “We’ve created these products to be an affordable solution to a common problem. That’s why they are in such high demand from DIY motorcycle owners and motorcycle repair shops seeking a replacement part that will generate profits for their business.”
Twin Power’s new lineup is 100% tested in the U.S. to meet OEM specifications and has been endurance tested to 60,000 miles to ensure sensor longevity. The units use OEM-style connectors for an exact fit and are designed using encapsulated circuitry, along with vibration and heat resistant polymers to stand up to the harsh operating environment of a motorcycle’s engine.
The line includes nine-part numbers, each with a different fitment covering the million+ Harley-Davidson motorcycles made between 1999 and today.
Part number and fitment information is available at TwinPower-USA.com. All of the TwinPower CPS models retail for $52.95.
About Twin Power: Since 1982, Twin Power has been designing and producing quality parts and accessories for the American V-Twin enthusiast. Driven by the same passion that fuels the American V-Twin scene, Twin Power is relentless in its pursuit of quality, functionality, and value. The Twin Power team will not offer a Twin Power product to its customers unless they are proud to sport it on one of their own rides. More information can be found at twinpower-usa.com.

Can you Ride with a Pet on your Motorcycle?
By Wayfarer |
ASK A TROOPER: “Motorcycle Riding Dog”
by Ryan Janke from https://kfgo.com/
Question: Can someone with a motorcycle permit have their small dog riding on the motorcycle or would that be considered a passenger? We have already purchased a helmet and leather jacket for this lucky pup! Thank you for your response.
Answer: First of all, where will this dog be seated and how? I see less issues if you are talking about a motorcycle side car or a motorcycle trailer equipped with a kennel. But if you are talking about on the actual motorcycle with you, I don’t think this would be very safe for you or your pet.
If you are going to carry a passenger, there are a few key items to keep in mind:
Equip and Adjust Your Motorcycle:
- A passenger seat and footrests are required by law.
- Adjust tire pressure and suspension settings for the additional weight. (Do not exceed weight limitations specified in the owner’s manual.)
- Readjust mirrors.
Passenger Preparation:
- Provide protective riding gear: eye protection, a DOT-approved helmet, boots, gloves, long riding pants and a high-visibility motorcycle jacket.
- Passengers under age 18 are required by law to wear a DOT-approved helmet.
- Small children are required by law to be able to reach both footrests with their feet while sitting on the passenger seat.
Getting On and Off the Motorcycle:
- Start the engine before the passenger gets on.
- Squeeze the front brake while the passenger gets on or off the bike.
- Passengers should get off the bike before the operator.
Passenger Safety Tips:
- Hold operator’s waist or hips, or motorcycle’s passenger hand-holds.
- Keep feet on footrests at all times, including while stopped.
- Keep hands and feet away from hot or moving parts.
- When turning, look over the operator’s shoulder in the direction of the turn.
- Avoid turning around or making sudden moves that might affect operation.
- If crossing an obstacle, rise off the seat keeping your feet on the foot pegs with knees slightly bent and allow legs to absorb the shock upon impact.
Operator Safety Tips:
- A passenger will affect handling due to extra weight and independent motion.
- Braking sooner with greater pressure may be necessary.
- Use extra caution in a corner.
- Allow more time and space for passing.
- Be ready to counter the effects of wind.
- Avoid extreme speeds and dramatic lean angles.

Harley-Davidson Regains Number One Position In India’s High-End Motorcycle Segment
By Wayfarer |
Earlier Harley-Davidson, exited the Indian market and again entered in 2020.
by Sameer Contractor from https://www.carandbike.com/
by FPJ Web Desk from https://www.freepressjournal.in/
According to the data shared by SIAM, Harley sold 601 motorcycles in FY-2022, as compared to only 206 Harley-Davidson motorcycles sold during FY-2021. It’s a 37 per cent growth in sales as compared to last year.
Hero MotoCorp took over Harley’s distribution in India in October 2020 including motorcycles, accessories, merchandise and more. The company is currently operating about 13 dealerships and 10 authorised service centres across the country.
Harley-Davidson has witnessed a resurgence in its sales in India as the brand managed to regain the number one spot in the high-end motorcycle segment in the country. The company, which announced its exit and subsequent re-entry into the Indian market in 2020, has been on a road to a revival with partner Hero MotoCorp.
According to the data shared by SIAM, Harley sold 601 motorcycles in FY-2022, of which 531 units were sold in the 1,000 cc and above two-wheeler segment. The company witnessed a 37 per cent growth year-on-year. In comparison, only 206 Harley-Davidson motorcycles were sold during FY-2021.
When compared to other premium motorcycle brands, Harley was substantially ahead with Triumph Motorcycles India selling 336 units, Kawasaki selling 283 units, Suzuki selling 233 and Honda selling 71 units in the 1,000 cc and above motorcycle segment.
The majority of the iconic American brand’s sales have been driven by its new launches, the Pan America 1250 adventure tourer and the Sportster S cruiser and mark a revolution, both in terms of a platform and segment for the manufacturer.
It’s also noteworthy that a bulk of Harley’s previous sales in India were driven by entry-level offerings like the Street 750, Iron 883 and the Forty-Eight, which were locally assembled. While the latter models are still on sale, they are now wholly imported much like the rest of the range comprising the Pan America 1250, Sportster S, Fab Bob, Fat Boy, Heritage Classic, Road King, Road Glide and Street Glide.
The company is now gearing up to introduce the Harley-Davidson Nightster S later this year.

Music, Meaning & Motorcycling
By Ujjwal Dey |
Sound has more impact on life than we know or credit it for. Sound is not just significant to humans but many lifeforms. When we hear a loving voice, our mental mood & thoughts are different compared to a roaring voice of a harsh boss at office. The first voice of a newborn baby has deep mental impact on a mother, while hearing an authoritative voice of a policeman when you are repeatedly getting pulled over at checkpoints for riding on a ‘cool’ chopper may bring a different response.
Long-time pet owners will vouch that their dogs or cats hear and respond to their voice, maybe even specific words. I had a cat who recognised his name when called. He also knew and loved the word ‘chicken’ among other words. Cats and dogs also have a strong sense of hearing, while most people only ‘hear’ (punny) about their sense of smell (or the smell of what the cat left behind in your shoe).
The music company HMV stands for the words ‘His Master’s Voice’. The HMV official logo illustrates a painting titled ‘His Master’s Voice’ by Francis Barraud of ‘Nipper’ listening to a Phonograph cylinder, which was bought by the Gramophone Company in 1899. It shows a dog looking at the gramophone, supposedly playing the recorded voice of his master, hoping his master will appear soon.
A famous experiment conducted by Jagadish Chandra Bose at the Royal Society of London in 1901 demonstrated that just like humans, plants too have feelings. He was also the first to study the action of microwaves in plant tissues and corresponding changes in the cell membrane potential (Bose was a physicist, botanist and a pioneer in radio science).
Humans with their fast improving lifestyle and diverse cultures have developed sound into great folksongs, retelling histories and unexplained mysteries. People further developed them by writing songs and using musical instruments. With standardizing of common musical instruments, music composition and changes to ‘what is considered a singing-voice’, we now have a whole range of music genres to choose from – for entertainment, for ‘edu-taiment’ of kids, for relaxing, for hitting the gym, for romantic night dinners, for wild parties and more.
(Note: Regarding singing voice, it is true that: when he was 14, young Elvis was given a C- grade for music, “below average”, with his teacher specifically commenting that he “had no aptitude for singing.” Later his audition to a local quartet failed, again because of his perceived lack of talent. After a performance at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry (Oct. 2, 1954), Elvis was allegedly told by an Opry manager that he was better off with his day job as a truck driver because he would never make it as a singer. Two weeks later he appeared on Louisiana Hayride & signed on for 52 Saturday night appearances on the radio show, thus launching his legendary career.)
Do songs or prayers motivate you? Does instrumental music for meditating or repeating a particular word/phrase/name help inspire you and give you desired results? Did a recording of historic words after first footsteps of man on the moon make you want to learn more about science or mechanics of how rockets or engines work?
Below are references to these misconceptions about songs written by legendary singer-songwriter John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival (listed at no. 40 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 100 Greatest Songwriters).
1. ‘Lookin’ Out My Back Door’ is not about drugs at all.
This song appeared in the album: Cosmo’s Factory.
The intriguing name of the album had trippy lyrics such as –
“Won’t you take a ride on the flyin’ spoon? Dood-n-doo-doo
Wonderous apparition provided by magician
Doo, doo, doo, lookin’ out my back door”
The song came up again in the trippy iconic movie ‘The Big Lebowski’ (1998) where ‘The Dude’ is looking through his rearview mirror as the song is playing. A movie by incredibly talented writer-director duo Coen Brothers.
All this will make any parent grab and destroy that CD (unless they are really hardcore Rock fans and look up stuff).
Well, the song is what John wrote when he came home to his 3-year old son.
With reference to: www.AmericanSongWriter.com
In interviews and in ‘Bad Moon Rising: The Unauthorized History of Creedence Clearwater’, John Fogerty is quoted as saying the song was actually written for his then three-year-old son, Josh. He has also said, the reference to the parade passing by the door was inspired by the Dr. Seuss story, ‘And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street’.
2. Another hit song from this wonderful album was ‘Run Through The Jungle’
No Sir, it is not about Vietnam War.
With reference to: AXS TV interview and quoted in www.rollingstone.com
In a TV interview that was also mentioned in Rolling Stone magazine in Jan-2016, the master-songwriter said:
“I’ve seen it written that ‘Run Through the Jungle’ is about Vietnam, but that’s not true. I was speaking about the landscape in America. I had been thinking about the idea ever since 1966, when Charles Whitman had gone on a rampage, killing sixteen and wounding thirty-two others, shooting from the observation tower at the University of Texas. The song is really about gun control.”
That said, there is his unique take about such a control:
“Now, I’m a hunter. And I’m intrigued, even fascinated, by weaponry through the ages. But you don’t take a machine gun to go deer hunting,” he said. “There’s got to be some sort of lid on this thing.”
(since 9/11 & Snowden and diminished rights of citizens) “I think it is important that our citizenry is armed. I believe this acts as a deterrent – whoa! Deterrent? Against what? Let’s just say that the fact that there are millions of armed people ready to defend their homes probably acts as a huge roadblock against those who would try to seize the country for their own ends.”
Fogerty also wrote about this song in his 2015 autobiography, ‘Fortunate Son: My Life, My Music’, echoing much of the same, saying he was a hunter that favored gun control.
3. Well, does that overload your heart & mind and wanna listen to the trippy song about Seuss’s characters with some whisky & women?
Well, here is another gem from this very album that promises a better stress-buster and true freedom. Freedom to ride, enjoy, explore, party, make friends, see the unseen beauty all around.
The name of the song is ‘Up Around the Bend’. Yes! It is about riding your motorcycle with the wind blowing, a smile for company.
With reference to: www.unmask.us
John Fogerty explains, “This was inspired by riding my motorcycle. I just remember riding along, and the title phrase came to me. Just the feeling of going. Movement.”
Well, movement is definitely important. Apart from physical, metal exercises, make sure to exercise your motorcycle engine, gears, throttle & roll those wheels. While a laid-back man may joke about moving parts causing more wear and tear, a biker knows by experience that a human body & mind regenerates only through exercise, not by stagnation – especially not of ‘spirit’.
And of course, the biker takes enough care to service & repair his/her motorcycle. Bikers personify their bikes, treat them like a person, with dignity & respect! They give their bikes a name. Some may advice you that, abuse of your machine will throwback bad surprises on some faraway highway. It may also be a metaphor for your life & health!
Life has it’s ups and downs, just like riding a big V-Twin on winding mountain roads or dirt tracks in small detours. You also get to ride smooth and fast on many highways and outside big cities.
Depending on all the mental / physical luggage, you may or may not reach your full-engine-capacity / efficiency. One man’s life though is not as similar as their friend or neighbour’s motorcycle of the same make & model.
So, there would be some rocking and some rolling & tumbling – depending on the path you choose to ride on. But you gotta gotta ‘Ride On’ !
So, cheer up and listen to this one below:

Song: “Up Around the Bend”
written by John Fogerty
from Album: “Cosmo’s Factory by Creedence Clearwater Revival
There’s a place up ahead and I’m going
Just as fast as my feet can fly
Come away, come away, if you’re going
Leave the sinking ship behind
Come on the rising wind
We’re going up around the bend
Ooh
Bring a song and a smile for the banjo
Better get while the getting’s good
Hitch a ride to the end of the highway
Where the neons turn to wood
Come on the rising wind
We’re going up around the bend
Ooh
You can ponder perpetual motion
Fix your mind on a crystal day
Always time for a good conversation
There’s an ear for what you say
Come on the rising wind
We’re going up around the bend
Yeah
Ooh
Catch a ride to the end of the highway
And we’ll meet by the big red tree
There’s a place up ahead and I’m going
Come along, come along with me
Come on the rising wind
We’re going up around the bend
Yeah

Do-do-doo-do
Do-doo-do
Do-do-doo-do
Yeah
