sexy

Hey goddamnit,

I beat the cold and now I’m back in full fuckin’ swing. Nothing like taking a couple of days off, to have the shit pile up like a rush-hour traffic jam. We’re looking for a translator to turn short German bike features from Horst into English for Bikernet. Let me know if you can help. We need to bring you a couple of features from the Padua AMD show in Italy. Outstanding bikes.

Bonnebell

We’ve kicked off the Root Beer Float project bike by Kent Weeks for the lovely Sin Wu. Rivera/Primo wants us to put together another install tech. Berry Wardlaw is checking and tuning the Assalt Weapan in Dotham, Alabama. Next race, the Maxton Mile. Lee Clemens and the Departure Bike Works Crew have the 1940 Bonne Belle (above) in their shop (stop by and check it out). I’m about to start a series of techs on a Pro Street, touring bike build at the Bikernet Headquarters. I’ve been invited to attend a Pirelli Tire Night Dragon unveiling in Daytona and go for a ride along the coast with the Pirelli gang so I’m headed to Bike Week.

Buckle

It’s my son’s Birthday today, and I made him a belt buckle, since he’s the president of a local Christian Club called the Saints. Plus we have a new set of Knockout Motorcycle Company Shovelhead pipes to install on Jeremiah’s bobber, if he ever shows up again. We will deliver the tech next week. Plus we have some killer features coming your way. So we’re back at it. Let’s hit the news:

SHIPPING 2008 D&D PERFORMANCE EXHAUST PIPES ON HARLEY-DAVIDSON FATBOY AND DEUCE–Slip On Pipes From D&D Roar on Fat Boy & Deuce Motorcycles.

D&D Performance Enterprises are shipping the 2008 Fat Cat slip-ons exhaust pipes for the Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Softail and Deuce motorcycles. Enthusiasts can choose between a slash cut even cut or a staggered cut for one of Harley’s most popular models.

The Harley-Davidson Fat Boy and Deuce Softail slip-on pipes are manufactured with show chrome and full wrap heat shields, which keep all discoloration out of sight. Enthusiasts can also select the black coating option as an alternative to chrome.

The entire line of D&D performance exhaust pipes for the softail family of Harley motorcycles are built with direct fitment that requires no cutting, welding or grinding.

Every Harley-Davidson Fat Boy slip-on pipe is torture tested on D&D’s state-of-the-art in-house Super Flow Eddy Current Ram Air dynamometer. This is done in combination with the Super Flow Bench and the first in the industry, multi cylinder Lambda Fuel Air Ratio Sensors, which are interfaced with the dynamometer for real time meter and graph analysis.

This means that performance is always increased with a D & D exhaust pipe. They sound awesome because we tuned them that way.

BANDIT’S BEDROLL JOURNEY AND NO, THAT AIN’T SUSHI– I thought about the Old West and the bedrolls the cowboys used to carry their shit, and it came to me. Something over the headlight, as long as it wasn’t too heavy, could do the trick. The bike would maintain its nasty profile, I could still pack someone on the back, and carry my shit.

As I wound through the canyon, my mind went to work on the bedroll concept. Could it carry all I wanted to pack? Another question smacked me as I rounded another corner and caught a glimpse of the Pacific lapping the Malibu shores in the distance. What about a tool bag? The short answer is yes, the perfect bag for the job.

Bandit’s Bed Roll is the perfect combo of tool bag and weekender engineered by the man that delivers form and function and keeps your ride looking clean. So pull out your wallet and click here to get your official Bandit Bed Roll Today.

MRF STRONGLY OPPOSES US DOT ATTACK ON MOTORCYCLE TRAINING FUNDS–The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has learned that United States Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters sent letters to Capitol Hill with draft legislation outlining her intention to raid the 2010 motorcycle training and awareness funds set aside by Congress in the last Highway Bill (PL 109-59). Peters announced on Thursday, February 14 that she would like to see the earmarked training and awareness funds made available to promote the use of helmets in individual states.

“The MRF is extremely disappointed that Mrs. Peters would choose this small, yet critical, grant program to raid. We understand her desire to encourage helmet use, but couldn’t the Secretary of Transportation find a more suitable program to fund her personal helmet hunt?” said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations for the MRF.

The 2010 funds were a direct result of years of intense lobbying by state motorcyclists’ rights organizations (SMROs) and individual motorcyclists from across this country, and were intended for two very specific aspects of motorcycle safety — motorcycle rider education and motorist awareness of motorcycles. These two aspects of motorcycle safety have been grossly under-funded at the state level for years, often solely at the direct expense of motorcyclists themselves through licensing and registration fees.

The 2010 funding program, in its second year, is a way for the motorcyclists of this country to get a little help from the feds to save lives. The fact is that helmet use has always been a major plank in the platform at the US Department of Transportation (DOT). So why now take away funds desperately needed for other areas of motorcycle safety? The training and awareness programs in statewide operation now are in jeopardy of reduced or zero funding every year. This federal program was designed to allow a trickle of cash to the states to at least keep current programs running. Should Peters get her way, that trickle becomes nothing but a drip. In addition, the current 2010 grant program is not funding failing programs. In order to qualify for the grant, each state has to demonstrate success in its programs by reducing fatalities.

Secretary Peters narrowly skates around an existing law that bans the federal government from lobbying states to enact statewide legislation. She does this by not asking that the money be used for helmet LAW advocacy, but by asking the money be used for helmet USE advocacy.

What’s actually happened and how concerned do we need to be? You may be asking yourself that very question about now. Here is the real worldscenario: Mary Peters has sent two letters to Congress – one to Speaker Pelosi and the other to Senate President Cheney. The letters include draft legislation that would amend section 2010 to allow funds to be used for the promotion of helmet use.

NEW ILLINOIS LAW–Wow: Illinois has no helmet law. Now, the government is coming in as surrogate parent in that you have to obtain a child passenger permit, for $100, to allow your child under the age of 16 to ride without a helmet. Michigan started with an opt out bill, allowing them to ride without a helmet if they purchased the $100 dollar a year permit.

Now Illinois is following suit with children under 16. Michigan’s bill died and I hope this one does too.

BIKERNET READER MAKES SUGGESTION TO ERIC BUELL–Just read about Eric’s Buell rotor install. It’s a great idea and thework in very good looking. Unfortunately he put the rotor on the wrongside for the caliper to work correctly. He now has the tire rotatinginto the wrong end of the caliper. This will make the pads wearexcessively fast.

Buell used a progressive design to maximize thebraking force as well as make the pads last longer. Eric has itinstalled backwards. In his install the largest pot gets the leadingedge.

If he mounted it on the opposite side it would work properly. That’s thesame reason I can’t use my Buell rotor and caliper now that I switchedto a springer. The caliper won’t be installed correctly. To make it workEric needs to buy the after market calipers that the Buell ones lookjust like (you know the brand). They can be purchased in the correctorientation for Eric’s bike. I don’t believe the Buell ones areavailable for the opposite side.

TRANSPORTATION CHIEF CALLS FOR HELMET USEU.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters sent legislation to Congress on February 14th seeking to divert funding from rider training and motorcycle awareness funds to promote helmet use.

According to the Department of Transportation, the legislation submitted to Congress would allow states to use federal motorcycle safety funding to promote the use of motorcycle helmets. Currently, states are limited to using the funds for motorcycle safety training and awareness programs only.

In spite of a Congressional ban on the federal agency lobbying state legislatures in favor of passing helmet laws, Secretary Peters wrote letters to House and Senate leaders ?seeking greater flexibility for states to target one of the leading causes of motorcycle deaths across the nation ? riding without a helmet.?

?Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters is requesting an amendment to allow the SAFETEA-LU Section 2010 Grant funds to be used to promote helmet use in a letter sent to President of Senate Dick Cheney and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi,? explained Sputnik, Chairman of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF). ?This is nothing more than a raid on a fund that was intended for motorcycle awareness and education. Motorcyclists across the nation fought hard for many years to get this grant money and the outlines for its usage were hammered out and agreed upon.?

Consider writing letters to your Senators and Representatives asking them to do the following:
1. Write Secretary Peters and request she withdraw her proposed amendment.
2. Speak with your legislators against this letter in an attempt to gather votes against this amendment if she does not withdraw it and it becomes a written bill.

INCREASED GLOBAL DEMAND FOR MOTORCYCLES FORECASTGlobal demand for motorcycles is projected to exceed 59 million unites in 2011. According to a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm, the demand for motorcycles is forecast to advance 6.0 percent annually to 59 million units in 2011, representing $49 billion in manufacturers’ sales.

?This growth emanates from a mix of developed market incremental improvements and emerging market expansions,? quoted the independent report released February 7th. ?Demand for all categories of motorcycles is expected to remain healthy, despite the plateauing of growth in key markets such as China, which is rapidly transitioning away from motorcycles and toward cars for its transportation needs.?

These and other trends, including market share and company profiles, are presented in “World Motorcycles”, a market research study conducted by The Feedonia Group, an unbiased international business analyst with Fortune 500 clientele. The most rapid growth will occur in developing markets, where rising income levels and the introduction of higher quality machines featuring the latest technologies will fuel demand.

?This growth will be tempered in part by the increasing number of restrictions or outright bans on motorcycle use in urban areas in Asia,? according to their research. ?In developed markets, fuel prices and increasing restrictions on car use in some regions such as Western Europe are stoking interest in the exceptional fuel economy and cost effectiveness motorcycles offer. While the market for large and expensive high displacement motorcycles will also remain moderately strong, concerns regarding future demand have emerged due to the aging of the customer base, especially in the United States and Western Europe.?

Two separate motorcycle markets exist, as broken down in the report. The first centers on the industrialized Triad (the US, Japan and Western Europe), where motorcycles are seen as pleasure vehicles. The other, much larger market in unit terms exists in the emerging economies of Asia, Latin America and the Africa/Mideast region, where motorcycles are seen as primary family and work vehicles. ?While Asia is dominant in terms of unit volume, most key players derive far higher revenues per unit from sales in developed markets such as North America,? says the study.

VISION ZEROAn international conference has been convened to investigate methods of eliminating all risk on the roads, and the possibility of eliminating motorcycles as well. Government transport advisors from across the European Union gathered in Brussels for the three-day conference beginning February 12th, called: ?Safe Highways of the Future? exploring technologies and changes required to enable zero deaths on Europe?s roads to become a reality.?

Presenters included Swedish transport advisor Claes Tingvall who devised the ?Vision Zero? transportation policy. Vision Zero aims to eliminate all deaths on the roads through technology, and Tingvall famously said on TV: ?There is no room for motorcycles in Vision Zero.?

Rune Elvik, a Norwegian transport advisor, recently said a debate was needed on whether motorcycles should be allowed on the roads in order for Vision Zero to progress.

Topics of the conference included ?Safer Vehicles By Design?.

BRITISH MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY DEMANDS BETTER TREATMENT FOR BIKERSUnited Kingdom motorcycle industry leaders want the British government, legislators, local authorities and transport planners to treat motorcycling as a serious, relevant alternative to cars, buses and trains. David Taylor, chief executive of the UK Motor Cycle Industry Association, made this plain only days after news of an 8.6 percent rise in motorcycle, scooter and moped registrations in 2007 ? the biggest jump in seven years.

“There are more than 1.2-million powered two-wheelers on UK roads,” he told media sources on January 22, 2008. “After several years of flat sales, there are strong indications that people are seeing PTW’s as practical, relevant personal transport They are part of the solution to traffic congestion and pollution – it’s time motorcyclists were properly considered and treated seriously ‘There are more than 1.2-million powered two-wheelers on UK roads’.”

“All too often car owners, commercial vehicles and public transport take priority while those on two wheels are ignored or an afterthought,” Taylor added. “We want equality and the incentives that come with the recognition that PTW’s ease traffic and parking congestion, reduce emissions and provide reliable and efficient personal transport.”

In particular, the MCIA wants:Government transport policies that acknowledge PTW’s as a viable alternative to tackle congestion and CO2.Better roads and faster and more efficient road maintenance. An end to an unforgiving road infrastructure clearly designed with not all road users in mind.

The promotion of PTW’s as a legitimate and relevant congestion-busting means of travel, including their exemption from road pricing, parking and congestion charges, access to bus lanes and secure parking.A lower scale of vehicle excise duty; no motorcycle should be taxed more than the smallest car.

The UK government announced a motorcycle strategy in 2005 but little had been done with implementation. PTW’s were almost ignored in the government’s latest core transport policy paper ?Towards a Sustainable Transport Policy?. This, Taylor said, was not good enough.

“The industry feels, despite warm words from ministers, ‘mainstreaming’ of motorcycling in transport policy isn’t happening. There should be no barriers to the development of motorcycling, better protection for riders and recognition of motorcycling as a legitimate form of transport.”

first race
Here’s a shot of the first race in 1938.

BIKIES INVITED INTO AUSTRIALIAN PARLIAMENT FOR DEBATEMembers of the Gypsy Jokers, Finks and Hells Angels were among guests at Parliament House for a February 8th briefing on new laws being introduced by the State Government to combat outlaw motorcycle clubs, and Democrats MP Sandra Kanck plunged herself into controversy by inviting the ?bikies? to participate in the debate.

MP Kanck defended the presence of the outlaw motorcycle club members saying people who are affected by legislation should be consulted before it becomes law. The seminar was organized by Ms Kanck to highlight concerns the legislation will unfairly target people who are not involved in criminal acts, such as bikers who belong to the Longriders Christian Motorcycle Club who?s homes have been raided by police during anti-bikie efforts.

Under the laws, scheduled to be debated soon in the House of Assembly, South Australians who have contact with bikies at least six times a year will face a minimum of five years in jail. The Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Bill 2007 also will enable the Police Commissioner, Mal Hyde, to obtain orders from the Attorney-General, Michael Atkinson, declaring bikie gangs illegal.

Anyone involved with the gangs, or who has any contact with them, can then be served with orders restricting their movements based on police intelligence, which must remain secret.

Prominent criminal defense lawyer Craig Caldicott told the gathering that the new laws were an attempt “to use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.”

“They are basically an overkill,” Caldicott said. “It is the only piece of legislation in Australia aimed at a group of people who wear leather jackets.”

COLORS SOUGHT FOR MOTORCYCLE MUSEUMThe Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is seeking vests with patches to expand an existing exhibit about motorcycle clubs.

?I’m looking to reach out to Motorcycle Clubs who might be willing to have their colors on display,? said Christine Paige Diers, Executive Director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame in South Dakota.

?One of the exhibits we’ve had on display for the last six to eight months is an exhibit about Motorcycle Clubs,? explained Diers. ?As part of the exhibit, we had a number of vests with patches representing a variety of clubs. Unfortunately, the owner of those patches has reclaimed his collection. We’re in the process of trying to rebuild the display and are looking for clubs that might be interested.?

The idea of this exhibit is to educate the public about the history of motorcycling and present a fair-minded representation of motorcycle clubs in their many forms, she said. ?I’d like to rebuild the exhibit with themed sections to display, including women’s clubs, family oriented clubs, law enforcement clubs and veterans clubs.?

Anyone interested in loaning a jacket, vest or patch, or even a photo, to the museum for a time period of one to two years, along with a brief club description or history, should contact her at christine@sturgismuseum.com or phone 605-347-2001.

Lone Star Choppers

WEIRD NEWS: CRASH ABSORBER INVENTED FOR MOTORCYCLESA new design of crash absorber can combat the type of accident where motorcyclists run into something and are then killed by the bike pivoting over the front wheel and impacting on the rider. Iranian inventor Mohammad Hassan Shorabi has come up with a construction that absorbs some of the impact energy and transfers the residue of the impact reaction force to the back axle. He has incorporated the idea into a child?s bike so it can travel as personal airline baggage.

It comprises a strong construction that projects just forward of the front wheel and is able to slide down the main body of the bike as the various parts of it collapse, bend and break. Shorabi has installed it on two different motorcycles, and a friend ?without mind? tested it by riding it into a wall ? and survived the experience.

LEGISLATIVE QUESTION OF THE DAY– My question is: A very important question!!

Has there been a case involving false advertising, of a kind, to accuse helmet manufacturers of false labeling? When there is NOT an approved helmet list obtainable (to come into possession of; get, acquire, or procure, as through an effort or by a request) . NHTSA does NOT certify or approve helmets they set a performance standard. NTSB does NOT certify or approve helmets, they investigate transportation issues. Neither have a list of approved helmets!

A deceptive trade practice is an activity in which an individual or business engages that is calculated to mislead or lure the public into purchasing a product or service. (As in False labeling of DOT stickers to helmets) (a word or phrase indicating that what follows belongs in a particular category or classification ), false advertising and odometer tampering are two of the most blatant examples of this commercial lying. Such activities are given special status as offenses against the citizenry in general and are therefore accorded by law special enforcement status.

Deceptive trade practices result in criminal prosecution in some states; in others, statutes provide for private enforcement, whereby a citizen is entitled to sue a business for violating deceptive trade practice laws and may be able to recover punitive damages and/or statutory fines. The attorney general of the state may also bring a lawsuit against an offending business enterprise.

Because a deceptive trade practice may affect individuals or businesses from more than one state, a number of states have adopted the standardized Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act (UDTPA). The Uniform Act does not add or detract from the law of any one state; rather, it is inclusive and tends to cover, in general terms, all the prohibitions and issues addressed in state law in this area. For example, the Uniform Act prohibits making deceptive representations in connection with commercial goods. This obviously covers odometer tampering, but it also addresses all forms of deception in the marketing or advertising of goods and services. Those states that have not adopted the UDTPA have laws similar to it.

There is little controversy among the states over what activity amounts to a deceptive trade practice. However, there is a great deal of variety concerning the remedies available for the violations and who may sue for those violations. There are two main purposes of the statutes providing for remedies for businesses engaging in unlawful activity: (1) injunctions or restraining orders forbidding the continued deceptive trade practice and (2) punishment via fines, damages, and imprisonment. But because businesses are generally in violation of deceptive trade practice laws, and because it is difficult to determine whom to punish in the violating business, fines are generally the most effective method of extracting restitution.

Garry:

Very good point. A few years ago, I contacted my state (Wisconsin) Consumer Protection agency, located in Madison, Wisconsin. My question was, how can helmet manufacturers advertise that their product was DOT approved? Most HD dealerships and shops had helmets in boxes with this claim in the advertisements. Also, HD and others had this claim in magazine ads. Wisconsin law prohibits false advertisement.

The Consumer Protection agency said they would look into this. The very next year, HD and most others have changed their ads to something like “DOT compliant” or meets the DOT standard.

So I know there was something to this. If there are ads still out there in some states, using the DOT approved language, one needs to check with the Consumer Protection agency in that state and submit a complaint.

AMA SEEKS URGENT GRASSROOTS ACTION TO END HEALTH INSURANCE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST MOTORCYCLISTS–More than 100 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have co-sponsored a bill that would end health insurance discrimination against motorcyclists and others who participate in legal recreational activities or use their motorcycles for transportation.

While the action is significant, there is still much work to be done, according to AMA Vice President for Government Relations Edward Moreland.

TAKE ACTION NOW. You can easily contact your U.S. Representative on this issue through the AMA Rapid Response Center:

http://tinyurl.com/2nxass

“The AMA is calling on motorcyclists and others who face health insurance discrimination to urge their U.S. Representatives to support H.R. 1076, known as the HIPAA Recreational Injury Technical Correction Act,” said Moreland. “Time is short. The bill has broad bi-partisan support but we need 218 votes for passage. If we don’t act by April, we will likely miss our chance for legislative action in 2008.”

Health insurance discrimination can have a devastating financial effect on families and has been the focus of efforts by the AMA and other groups for many years. Following the passage of the original HIPAA legislation in 2001, bureaucrats at the Department of Health and Human Services created a loophole that allowed insurance companies to deny benefits to people who are injured while participating in legal recreational activities, such as riding motorcycles or off-road vehicles, horseback riding, skiing, and other activities. H.R. 1076 will close that loophole.

Rep. Michael Burgess, M.D. (R-Texas) has worked diligently to get H.R. 1076 passed. “Laws like HIPAA are passed to protect people,” he said. “Sometimes they have unintended consequences. When this happens, Congress has an obligation to fix the loopholes and that?s what this bill does.”

“No one should be denied health coverage for no reason other than they enjoy snowmobiles, motorcycles or other recreational activities,” said Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), the lead Democrat sponsoring the bill. “This legislation would enforce the original intent of Congress and ensure recreational enthusiasts are not discriminated against.”In the last Congress, the U.S. Senate passed a companion bill by unanimous consent, but the bigger challenge has been getting legislation approved in the House.

“We now have 101 co-sponsors for this legislation in the House, which is an important milestone,” said Moreland. “But to reach 218 votes and get H.R. 1076 passed, immediate grassroots action is crucial, especially since House members are returning to their districts soon to campaign for the fall election.”

Other organizations supporting this legislation include: American Council of Snowmobile Association; American Horse Council; American Recreation Coalition; American Trails; Americans for Responsible Recreational Access; Blue Ribbon Coalition; International Mountain Bicycling Association; Motorcycle Industry Council; Motorcycle Riders Foundation; National Ski Areas Association; Specialty Vehicle Industry Council; Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association; and the Washington Road Riders Association.

George
That’s Fatbob and his grandson with George in the center on his ride.

FATBOB HAS A HEAVY HEART– I write this with a heavy heart. My brother in the wind George, has had his bone cancer come back. He is the big guy on the long bike with all the swastikas. Please put him in the Thursday news. Man, it would cheer him up. I know he doesn’t look like a biker on his sled, but he is sick. I didn’t show him the article because I’m on his sled with my grandson. I feel it would either piss him off or hurt him, like I was trying to cop his glory. This was going to be the last bike he built before he died. Bird and I are going to finish it for a Bikernet article, but please put something together about him and the bike.

I wrote the club poem in 1979 when we were working at the nuke plant in Byron, Illinois. Last of the Cowboys. Oh yeah, the springer in Bird’s hand in the pic is not the one on the long bike, but another again Bandit e is getting more fucking radiation as I type. The cancer was in remission and the insurance co quit paying for the drug that put it there which is the drug women took for morning sickness and it fucked up the babies, thaelidamide. I know, I spelled it wrong that’s why I told what it did to women, then you will know what I’m talking about. Damn lame when they have shit to keep you healthy and let you die because of money. I know everyone has a sad song, and sympathy is between shit and syphillis in the dictionary, but it would mean so much to me, Bird, and lift George’s spirits. Here’s a poem for the man:

George a Biker my Brother

Always a biker belonged to a club
Bike trash to some but never a rub

Building his scooters to handle the road
Wearing his colors living the code

Always a stand up never a fool
Jockey shifting his sled before it was cool

Red is his color he runs it with pride
Rode the white line Brothers by side

Road trips the nationals runwith the pack
He was a Hells Henchman and never looked back

10th ANNIVERSARY CUSTOM CHROME EUROPE DEALER SHOW TO HOST EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FOR 2008–CUSTOM Chrome Europe will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its popular Dealer Show at Mainz, Germany, on March 29th and 30th, with the event again hosting AMD’s Official European Championship of Custom Bike Building.

The event will see Custom Chrome putting up a parts and cash prize fund that includes bike freight/expenses contributions of 5.000 Euros each for the first three competitors to travel to compete at the 5th annual Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August.

Always a popular weekend with dealers in Europe, the event combines distributor warehouse show features such as vendor booths, seminars and parts and accessory sales promotions and incentives with what is widely regarded as the highest standard of custom bike design and engineering competition held outside of the United States.

European Championship judging will be by the competitors themselves and a selected VIP jury. The event is a genuinely open Championship, but whilst the majority of competitors are drawn from the custom dealer network in Europe, the unique formula of the weekend has provided a showcase in which leading private builders have been able to come and have their projects judged alongside the market’s professionals on a level playing field.

There will be sub-classes to recognize the specific design and engineering achievements of builders working with Custom Chrome Motorcycle packages and Modified Harley-Davidson frames and engines, but as ever, the primary hallmark of the European Championship will be the increasingly admired ‘FreeStyle’ class in which design and engineering diversity and originality is promoted and rewarded.

Competitors can enter online at the World Championship website (www.amdchampionship.com) where entry forms and full details of the weekend can be found.

For their dealer show Custom Chrome is promising the largest turn-out of leading European and American vendors yet, with Jesse James, Cory Ness, John Reed, Fred Kodlin and Marcus Walz among those slated to be taking part.

The show runs from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday March 29th (the dealer/industry-only day) and Sunday March 30th at its established venue, the atmospheric Phoenixhalle in Mainz, Germany.

TOP 10 VALENTINE’S DON’TS– No. 1 DON’T tell your girlfriend that this has been “one of the best” Valentine’s you’ve ever had. She won’t see that as a compliment.

No. 2 DON’T celebrate your special night by ordering tequila shots, Valentine’s is already poignant enough without inviting Jose Cuervo to the party! Anger, shouting and upchucking that expensive dinner, you paid for, do not a romantic evening make.

No. 3 DON’T try to “avoid the rush.” There’s no such thing as a romantic 4:00 PM dinner (unless you’re over 65).

No. 4 DON’T try to slip how much you spent on her gift into the conversation. She already knows the going rate for cubic zirconia, dude.

No. 5 DON’T Forget to compliment your wife or girlfriend on her Valentine’s ensemble. Compliment her dress, her hair, her shoes, her nails, her makeup, her jewelry, her fingers, her toes, her kneecaps, her kidneys, etc. Just keep complimenting

No. 6 DON’T willingly engage in any conversation during which your wife/girlfriend addresses you by your real name. If she calls you “Honey,” or “Sweetheart,” or even “Papi,” you’re good to go. But any conversation that starts with “Michael, I need to ask you a question,” is a potential minefield.

No. 7 DON’T take your Valentine to an NC-17 movie, even if it’s foreign and/or artsy. On a night like this, the only naked body you should be admiring is hers.

No. 8 DON’T be your usual, too-cool-to-wear-nice-clothes self. No need to buy a new suit, but come on man, maybe tonight isn’t the night for your, “ironic” Dukes of Hazard t-shirt.

No. 9 DON’T order tequila shots. Do you hear me? I’m not kidding about this!

No. 10 DON’T play mood music that’s sexier than you are. If you’re not 100% certain you can provide genuine “sexual healing,” leave Marvin Gaye up on the shelf. Every man’s got to know his limitations.

So, in other words, have a Great Valentine’s Day!

IT’S WHISKEY AND ROSES TIME–Have a terrific time for me. I’m doing shots of whiskey with teaspoons of honey back, then tea with lemon. How’s that sound? I thought so.

BIKERNET REVIEW FROM LONG TIME READER–Wanted to say that I am at a loss as to how you do it.Bikernet has really become the magazine of choice.Publications are becoming irrelevant in today’s world.I now subscribe to Easyriders, Back Street Choppers (Iron Horse) and Cycle Source.I have no idea why, except I like something in the mailbox, I flip thru em and that’s that.I own every issue of Easyriders, every issue since day #1.I don’t know why, just is.

The reason I am writing is your 2008 plea to buy American. You just came from Hawaii, did you see what I saw last October?Disenfranchised Hawaiians living on their islands, yet economically worlds away from their locale. I am fearful the same is looming for the USA.Custom Chrome sold to a Korean consortium? Last week Taylor Oil the largest and most respected Louisiana independent oil company was sold to the Chinese!!!!What the f–k is going on?

I have given up on the bike scene. I have my bike. It will kick ass on anyone’s stocker. I have toured the USA and been riding since 1969. I have nothing to prove to anyone.I am now looking out of country to retire and run a fishing business. A boat, bait and a beer are where I am headed.Sorry to run on but then again so does the Thursday News at times.I respect Bikernet for staying true to the Code of the West ( or is that Long Beach?)

You hang tight, we need ya.

Sweet Amber

OCC MOTORCYCLES UNVEILS TWO NEW PRODUCTION BIKES AT CINCY’S 2008 V-TWIN EXPO–FEBRUARY 2, 2008 (Cincinnati, OH) — On Friday, February 1, 2008, OCC Motorcycles unveiled two exciting new additions to their award winning Limited Edition Production Bike Line during a special industry-only reception at the 2008 V-Twin Expo. Showcasing the same quality and innovation of their predecessors, The OCC Sweet Amber and The OCC SR Cruiser wowed the crowd, playing on the hottest designs in the industry while incorporating the unexpected features that are hallmarks of OCC’s unmistakable style.

The OCC Sweet Amber pulls strong, sexy curves out of a traditional softail frame, proving performance need not come at the expense of style. Unusual details like an oil tank discreetly mounted in the bomb-proof transmission, 2″ thick Springers and original OCC flow-cut chrome wheels set The OCC Sweet Amber well apart from its competition. An EPA-certified engine unleashes incendiary speed while a large 21″ front and a thick 240 rear tire balance that power with sure-footed stability. Finally, a sleek, low slung design, internal wiring and premium OCC paint designs lend an alluring refinement to a body that’s built for speed.

Bagger

The OCC SR Cruiser is a classic redefined. A completely re-imagined old style glide, it retains the essential elements of a true bagger: stability, storage and comfort. A dual-style gas tank and twin exhaust pipes that exit out the side of the saddlebags lend an aggressively updated style, while a progressive EPA-certified X-wedge engine and brawny, custom-framed rear 240 add power, steadiness and control. Deftly rendered extra wide bags increase the cargo area without being obtrusive, and a uniquely designed seat is the finishing touch to this stylishly comfortable bike, a new-school roadster ready to take you as far as you want to go.

BIKERNET OPENS FLOWER SHOP–One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he asks about his bill and the barberreplies, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing communityservice this week.’ The florist is pleased and leaves the shop.

When the barber goes to open his shop the next morningthere is a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen roses waitingfor him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he triesto pay his bill, the barber again replies, ‘I cannotaccept money from you. I’m doing community servicethis week.’ The cop is happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open up thereis a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen donuts waiting forhim at his door.

Later that day, a college professor comes in for ahaircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barberagain replies, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’mdoing community service this week.’ The professor isvery happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber opens his shop, thereis a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen different books, such as ‘How to Improve Your Business’ and ‘BecomingMore Successful.

Then, a Congressman comes in for a haircut, and whenhe goes to pay his bill the barber again replies, ‘Icannot accept money from you. I’m doing communityservice this week.’ The Congressman is very happy andleaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open up,there are a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for afree haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental differencebetween the citizens of our country and politicians.

FBI CAN TAP YOUR CELL PHONE–The FBI appears to have begun using a novel form of electronic surveillance in criminal investigations: remotely activating a mobile phone’s microphone and using it to eavesdrop on nearby conversations.

The technique is called a “roving bug,” and it was used on two alleged mobsters, John Ardito and his attorney Peter Peluso. Their Nextel phones were activated by the FBI to listen in on nearby conversations. The FBI views Ardito as one of the most powerful men in the Genovese family, a major part of the national Mafia.

The U.S. Commerce Department’s security office http://www.wasc.noaa.gov/wrso/security warns that “a cellular telephone can be turned into a microphone and transmitter for the purpose of listening to conversations in the vicinity of the phone.” Black Hats can remotely install a piece of software on to any handset, without the owner’s knowledge, which will activate the microphone even when its owner is not making a call.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY HISTORY LESSON, 157 YEARS AGO IN CALIFORNIA–Do you know what happened this week back in 1850, 157 years ago?

California became a state,
The state had no electricity.
The state had no money.
Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
There were gunfights in the streets.

So basically, it was just like California is today, except the women had real breasts, and the men didn’t hold hands.

Biltwell

CLASSIC HELMETS FROM BILTWELL– OPEN FACE HELMET,__Pudding bowls, Nazi helmets and DOT-approved half helmets each have their place in the pantheon of skid lids, but for our money, nothing looks better or feels more comfortable than an old-fashioned open face helmet. Trouble is, finding an open face that doesn’t make you look like an astronaut is extremely difficult.

NOS helmets are one solution to this problem, but their numbers are dwindling rapidly. When you can find one of these circa ’60s brain buckets, they are usually so moth-eaten and/or overpriced you can’t justify putting one on your head.__Enter the Biltwell novelty helmet.

Our open face design is stylish, comfortable and classic. Our seamless injection-molded ABS plastic outer shell is form fitting and super flexible. Because our non-DOT-approved helmet has no expanded polystyrene (EPS) inner shell, it fits close to the skull-nobody wants to look like a bobble head doll when they’re riding their chopper.

The open-cell foam padding inside our helmet features a moisture wicking fleece Lycra liner for cool, dry comfort. __We offer a wide range of metal flake and solid colors, and a rugged clear coat protects every paint job. There’s a goggle strap retainer on the back, and the helmet edge is protected with durable rubber ribbing. A simple D-ring retention strap holds the Biltwell helmet securely on your head. __

Now, a word about sizing. Miraculously, the Biltwell helmet is one size fits most. Pin-headed bikers who normally wear a 6-5/8 helmet can wear a Biltwell helmet, and their size 8+ pals can squeeze their giant melons into our helmet without discomfort. That’s because the foam padding inside our helmets is really soft and compliant, and because our outer shell is so flexible. Of course, this is the reason why the Biltwell helmet is designed for display and novelty purposes only, and should never be worn to operate an actual motorcycle.

Simply put, Biltwell helmets do not meet any DOT or other safety standards.__MSRP’s:_Solid: $75_Metalflake: $114_

Unfortunately, we don’t have a shot of the new Diesel powered FXR. We’ll find one soon.

UP TO 100 MPH, 80MPG AND BUILT BY GRAY-HAIRED ENGINEERS– A DIESEL–Ex-Harley staffers go full-throttle with their idea of fun. They call themselves the Gray Eagles, a group of senior engineers who would rather build motorcycles than play golf.

In a small, modest workshop in the Menomonee Valley, the Gray Eagles have built a powerful street bike that looks like a Harley-Davidson, kind of sounds like one, but has a diesel engine.

The motorcycle was developed over the past several years as a demonstration of engine technology for the U.S. military. With a little luck, it could become the nation’s first turbocharged, diesel-powered bike aimed at riders wanting something different.

The bike could easily top 100 mph and get about 80 miles per gallon of fuel at normal highway speeds.

Harley-Davidson officials have looked at the bike three times, perhaps because several of the Gray Eagles are former Harley engineers and executives.

Nick Hirsch, head of the project, was Harley’s director of advanced engineering for about nine years. Now he is president of Advanced Engines Development Corp., a small Milwaukee firm that has developed engines for the military.

Karl Nilson, another Gray Eagle, was a Harley engineer involved in a secret project to produce a sophisticated motorcycle that would have been years ahead of its time.

Called the “Nova project,” it sputtered to a halt in the early 1980s when Harley teetered on the edge of bankruptcy.

Dave Caruso, another Gray Eagle, was a Harley executive and now serves as a consultant to the motorcycle company.

Don Kueny was chief engineer at the former Outboard Marine Corp., the maker of Johnson and Evinrude outboard engines.

All together, the Gray Eagles have decades of high-level engineering and business experience.Nilson has a more humble description of the group.

“We are just a bunch of old guys with a common background. Gear heads is the term you might call us,” he said.

The diesel-powered motorcycle is a prototype based on a Harley 1988-vintage FXRS chassis and a V-twin gasoline engine converted to run on diesel fuel.

“This is our first cut at it. We can improve the performance to where it’s better than a stock gasoline engine,” Hirsch said.

The project started as an experiment meant to show the military the potential of a V-twin diesel.

It has morphed into something that might attract a motorcycle manufacturer wanting to offer an alternative in an industry that’s based on gasoline engines.

“There’s going to be a niche for diesel bikes. I would be very surprised if the Japanese aren’t working on them now,” Nilson said.

POLICE SEEK VOLUNTARY DNA SAMPLES DURING ARRESTS– February 08, 2008DAYTONA BEACH — If you’re driving down the road drunk and stopped by a police officer here and get arrested, you may be asked to do more than blow into a breathalyzer machine.Police will also want your DNA.

The same thing could happen if you’re arrested for trespassing, littering, indecent exposure or any other crime that prompts a cop to slap a pair of handcuffs on you.

Because starting soon, if someone is arrested by Daytona Beach or several other police agencies, officers will ask suspects whether they would like to give a DNA sample.

The Public Defender’s Office says the lines between voluntarily giving DNA and believing it’s required by law when you’re under arrest are easily blurred.Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood, however, is determined.

“We’re going to be swabbing people we arrest,” Chitwood said, referring to the method police will use to obtain voluntary DNA samples from people. “It (the process) will follow all the legal requirements for it to stand up in court.”

Chitwood said he’s anxious to establish a strong DNA database. It would serve police in the case of a serial killer who has murdered four women and in all cases, the chief said.

In their quest for DNA and a suspect in the serial murders, Daytona Beach investigators could literally end up knocking on someone’s door if they receive a legitimate tip about a suspicious person, Chitwood said. Detectives could ask that person to voluntarily give a DNA sample.

If the person refuses and detectives believe there is probable cause, police could obtain a warrant, or employ other investigative tactics, Chitwood said.In the last several weeks, tipsters have called in with the names of dozens of people they believe could be the serial killer, the chief said.

“We have looked at a lot of people,” Chitwood said. “We’ve had some really good information.”

Two weeks ago, Deputy Police Chief Steve Beres sent several police agencies in the area an e-mail asking them to participate in the new initiative and ask for DNA samples from people they arrest in their respective cities.

“After discussion with profilers, there is a good possibility that law enforcement has, or will come in contact with the suspect in the homicides,” Beres wrote in his e-mail message. Most police officials said they would participate in the push but would first consult their legal departments before starting the effort.

“We’ll help Daytona in any way we can,” Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety Director Stephan Dembinsky said.Attached to Beres’ e-mail was a “permission to search” form developed by police and the State Attorney’s Office. Officers are supposed to present the form when requesting DNA.

But regardless of whether people who are arrested allow officers to swab the inside of their cheeks, the plan sounds outrageous to Public Defender James Purdy.

Purdy said the stress brought on by an arrest can cloud a person’s ability to distinguish between a requirement by law and a request by an officer.

“The Legislature states that DNA can only be collected for certain violent offenses,” an angry Purdy said Thursday. “If you’re arrested for drunk driving, do you want to have your DNA on file?”We’re going beyond the invasion of personal liberty,” he said. The perception by most people is that if they don’t voluntarily surrender their DNA to police — or anything else they may ask for — they could get treated differently by an officer, Purdy said.

“If someone refuses to give their DNA, that does not mean they’ve done something,” he said. “Your right to privacy is more important than the government’s need to know.

“I would not give it (DNA) myself,” he said.

DERRINGER CYCLES BUILDS COPPER BIKE– Great speaking with you the other day. I’ll keep you updated on interesting projects as they come along. I’m doing a copper plated bike right now, and I just did a trike.

Bicycle trikes tend to have a geriatric connotation so I did this one all in black with low bars and fat tires, it has the obligatory basket as well, but this basket is only designed to hold a box of Jack Daniels.

One for the kids.

NOTES FROM THE BIKERNET MARRIAGE COUNSELOR– Bob works hard at the warehouse and spends two nights each week bowling and plays golf every Saturday. His wife thinks he’s pushing himself too hard, so for his birthday she takes him to a local strip club.

The doorman at the club greets them and says, “Hey, Bob! How ya doin?”

His wife is puzzled and asks if he’s been to this club before. “Oh no,” says Bob. “He’s on my bowling team.”

When they are seated, a waitress asks Bob if he’d like his usual and brings over a Budweiser.

His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says, “How did she know that you drink Budweiser?”

“I recognize her, she’s the waitress from the golf club. I always have a Bud at the end of the 1st nine, honey.”

A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Bob starts to rub herself all over him and says, “Hi Bobby. Want your usual table dance, big boy?”

Bob’s wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club.

Bob follows and spots her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her.

Bob tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it. She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every four-letter word in the book.

The cabby turns around and says, “Geez Bob, you picked up a real bitch this time.”

garage girls

WOMEN RIDERS HAVE A NEW WEBSITE TO CHECK OUT– www.garage-girls.com goes live covering everything a girl wants to know about motorcycles and so much more?.

Minneapolis, MN- The launch of www.garage-girls.com was well received by female motorcycle enthusiasts around the world. The new site created and maintained by Sara Liberte and Jody Perewitz presents motorcycling and everything that goes along with it from a female perspective.

www.garage-girls.com is a unique, exciting new website developed to meet the growing needs of women seeking information about motorcycles and their maintenance. “Women are buying more motorcycles now than ever before. Along with owning the bike, many also want to know how to perform general maintenance, connect with other female riders about issues important to them and their everyday life. The site was created to meet their needs” explained founder Sara Liberte.

The concept driving Garage-girls.com is to encourage women to maintain a balance between their motorcycle and body. Garage-girls accomplishes this by providing quality content covering topics including demonstration videos focused on motorcycle maintenance ranging anywhere from changing fluids, battery care, tire care, tool information, new product testing and ways to individualize/customize motorcycles.

You’ll also find information on keeping up with a healthy lifestyle, from exercise to recipes to overall health info, beauty products, fashion, and general interests such as movies, books and music. On the site you’ll also find Cruisin’ Companions. In this section visitors are encouraged upload a photo of their adorable pet to share with other garage-girl guests. This section of the site is dedicate to raising awareness for Animal Friends, a non-profit organization that relies on community support to help find homes for pets in need.

“Motorcycling is second nature to me, being raised in the industry I sometimes forget it can be a bit overwhelming and confusing. Garage-girls takes all of the information so many female riders want and breaks it down into pieces that are easy to understand and digest” stated Jody Perewitz, co-Founder of the new site.

Sara and Jody both have spent a significant time working and playing with bikes resulting in real life experience in the motorcycle industry. Sara and Jody each work full-time in the motorcycle industry and regularly tour nationally attending events, presenting information at dealerships to female customers or participating in charitable causes deeply rooted in the motorcycle industry. This spring you will see Sara and Jody out on the road participating in a few bike builds at live events in the Northeast and also presenting at the 105th Harley-Davidson Reunion in Milwaukee, WI later this summer.

Sara Liberte is the Owner/Operator of RT’s North Hills Cycle Inc. in Pittsburgh, PA. Sara spends her days designing custom motorcycles along with one of a kind paint jobs. Exile Monster Pipes for Softails use

RUSSELL MITCHELL PRODUCES A MONSTER SET OF PIPES–Now available, all new, Exile Monster Pipes designed by Russell Mitchell for late modelHarley-Davidson Softails

North Hollywood, CA: Russell has been hard at work designing and testing all new Exile pipes for Softails. These huge, new 2-INCH Monster Pipes have been a signature component on every Exile Cycle for over a decade. After thousands of requests, they are now finally available for your 1986, 2008 Harley-Davidson Softail models. “I attend shows all over the country and world that is the one product request that is always asked of me and Exile time and time again. I love it when customers know exactly what they want,” said Russell.

The Exile logo is carved into each pipe so everyone will know you?re running the real deal!

Exile Monster Pipes are priced at $599 and are available exclusively through Drag Specialties or direct from Exile Cycles. Exile also offers their combo? deal one front pipe and both styles of rear pipe for $799 allowing you to switch up the look of your ride for very little extra cash!

CALIFORNIA HELMET COURT CASE BUILDING– There was a Court Hearing today in Santa Cruz. It’s the lawsuit against the CHP (Civil Court) that was filed by motorcycle riders because the police are enforcing the helmet law improperly.

The CHP’s attorney, the Attorney General of California (AG), filed a request (MSJ) that the court give the win to the CHP, because they claim there’s enough proof that the CHP will win after the trial, so “why have a trial?”

The Judge denied the MSJ and disagreed with the AG. WE win again.

In fact, the Judge disagreed with the CHP (AG) so strongly, that he hinted that the CHP might lose the case in the long run. So, we have some paperwork to file with the court ASAP. We are hoping the Judge actually signs an Injunction against enforcement. In other words, orders the police to quit enforcing the helmet law.

What do you need to do? Right now, make an effort to contact everybody you know (and everybody they know) to get information to me about any helmet ticket you can find. The more unapproved helmet tickets you can show the Judge, the more likely he is to see that they have been writing tickets when they shouldn’t have.

Take a picture of the helmet if you can, but most importantly get the info about that ticket emailed to me ASAP. A copy of the ticket would be the best. A “goldmine.”

We’ve been telling you for months that this will, very likely, take the helmet law out completely. You have not been this close to getting rid of the helmet law since it was written into the lawbooks in 1992. Make this your personal goal; Find any and every helmet ticket written since 1996, the Easyriders Federal Court Decision. Every person you find that was ticketed for a helmet violation is another nail in the coffin of the helmet law.

Now go find ’em; We know they’re out there. Get back to me.

DIRECT FROM THE CHURCH OF BIKERNET–The night before her wedding, the bride-to-be talked with her mother. “Mom,” she said, “I want you to teach me how to make my new husband happy.”

The mother took a deep breath and began, “When two people love, honor, and respect each other, love can be a very beautiful thing…”

“I know how to fuck, mother,” the bride-to-be interrupted.

“I want you to teach me your lasagna recipe.”

THE GOOD HUSBAND CLASS FROM BIKERNET– Jack wakes up with a huge hangover after attending his company’s Party. Jack is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn’t taste like alcohol at all. He didn’t even remember how he got home from the party. As bad as he was feeling, he wondered if he did something wrong.

Jack had to force himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table. And, next to them, a single red rose!! Jack sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed.

He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house.

He takes the aspirins, cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror. Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick: “Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to get groceries to make you your favorite dinner tonight. I love you, darling! Love, Jillian”

He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee and the morning newspaper.

His 16 year old son is also at the table, eating. Jack asks, “Son…what happened last night?”

“Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door.

Confused, he asked his son, “So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me??”

His son replies, “Oh THAT… Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you screamed, “Leave me alone, I’m married!!”

Broken Coffee Table $239.99
Hot Breakfast $4.20
Two Aspirins $.38

MEMO FROM BIKERNET FARM IN INDIANA–The Indiana State Wage & Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him.

“I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,” demanded the agent.

“Well,” replied the farmer, “there’s my farm hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board.

The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $150 per week plus free room and board.

Then there’s the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally.”

“That’s the guy I want to talk to — the half-wit,” said the agent.

“That would be me,” replied the farmer.

BUY AMERICAN!–This is something we banter around constantly, but we need to look at it seriously. A brother just got a call, “I can buy 5-speed polished Softail Transmissions for $499, with a pulley,” He said. “I couldn’t build a transmission case for that price in the US.”

He spends $399 for top of the line Pan or Shovel cylinders, a piece. “I could have them made overseas for $99. Does that make me a bad businessman, or a man who honors his country?”

JODY PEREWITZ JOINS TEAM KRYPTONITE–Lock Manufacturer Teams with Growing Force in Motorcycle Industry.

Canton, MA February 1, 2006 – Kryptonite, a brand in Ingersoll Rand’s Security Technologies Sector, announces that Jody Perewitz has joined Team Kryptonite. Kryptonite and Perewitz Cycle Fabrications entered into an exclusivity partnership two years ago when her father, legendary builder Dave Perewitz, joined Team Kryptonite. Jody will represent the company at shows and through its newly launched Riding Essentials for Women class.

“After working with the Perewitz family for several years, Kryptonite is making our relationship with Jody official by adding her to our growing Team Kryptonite,” said Karen Rizzo, Director of Marketing. “Our partnership with Jody will help us bring the message of security to an ever expanding audience that we may not have been successful at targeting before – the woman motorcycle rider. We all look forward to having a long relationship with Jody.”

Perewitz will team with endurance sport bike racer, Nicole Hoffman in the newly created Riding Essentials for Women summer series of classes. They will travel to select dealers sharing their experiences and extensive knowledge on safety, simple maintenance, gear choices, resources available and security tips. The whole experience will be for women only. The first class will take place at Perewitz Cycle Fabrications in June.

In addition to the women’s classes, Jody will also continue to write for Kryptonite’s Unbreakable Bonds blog and participate in other non-traditional marketing for the company later in the year.

“We’ve trusted Kryptonite products for years at the shop and on the road,” said Jody Perewitz. “I know full well how intimidating it can be to ask “the guys” anything so I’m glad to have the opportunity to work with this brand to help bring more women into the sport.”

Perewitz joins her famous father, endurance road racer Nicole Hoffman and former pro-cyclist Bob Roll on Team Kryptonite. The company has enjoyed lengthy relationships with each of these members.

Kryptonite, Jody Perewitz, Dave Perewitz and Nicole Hoffman can be found in booth 2019 at Dealer Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana. The show runs February 16-18, 2008.

BIKERNET ZOO NOW OPEN–A biker is riding by the zoo, when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion’s cage.

Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his bike, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.

Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.

A reporter has seen the whole scene, and addressing the biker, says- Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I saw a man do in my whole life.

– Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right.

– Well, I’ll make sure this won’t go unnoticed. I’m a journalist, you know, and tomorrow’s papers will have this on the first page. What motorcycle do you ride?

– A Harley Davidson.

The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on first page:

V-QUAD CUSTOMS WIN POMONA GRAND NATIONAL ROADSTER SHOW– Greg Nelson of Nelson Engineering showed his new V-Quad engine at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati last weekend. The V-Quad is essentially, the largest, most powerful engine that you can get and put into your stock Harley EVO style frame with minor frame modifications. This monster makes double of everything, double the sound, double the horsepower and double the torque.

Quad engine

The V-Quad was installed in a stock FL with minor modifications to the frame. According to Greg it’s a simple swap and doesn’t have any adverse affect on the handling of the bike. I threw my leg over the bike and lifted it off the side stand without any more effort than my own FLTRI. Presently it is available with 45mm Mikuni Carbs only, no fuel injection yet, which may limit some applications but I’m sure it won’t hold back those builders who want the biggest engine on the block.

Greg has some neat videos of the engine in an FXR at Bonneville on his website http://v-quad.com/index.php which showcase the awesome power and torque that this beast produces.

BIKERNET GEOGRAPHY SEMINAR–Have you ever looked at a map of the world?Look at Texas with me just for a second. That picture, with the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast, and the Red River and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as anything ever will be.. As soon as anyone anywhere in the world looks at it they know what it is. It’s Texas. Pick any kid off the street in Japan and draw him a picture of Texas in the dirt and he’ll know what it is. What happens if I show you a picture of any other state? You might get it maybe after a second or two, but who else would? And even if you do, does it ever stir any feelings in you?

In every man, woman and child on this planet, there is a person who wishes just once he could be a real live Texan and get up on a horse or ride off in a pickup.

There is some little bit of Texas in everyone.

Did you ever hear anyone in a bar go, “Wow…so you’re from Iowa? Cool, tell me about it?” Do you know why?Because there’s no place like Texas.

Here are just a few facts and history of the great state of Texas.
Texas is the Alamo.
Texas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom.

We send our kids to schools named William B.Travis and James Bowie and Crockett and do you know why? Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes. John Wayne paid to do the movie himself. That is the Spirit of Texas.

Texas is Sam Houston capturing Santa Ana at San Jacinto.

Texas is “Juneteenth” and Texas Independence Day.

Texas is huge forests of Piney Woods like the Davy Crockett National Forest.

Texas is breathtaking mountains in the Big Bend.

Texas is the unparalleled beauty of bluebonnet fields in the Texas Hill Country.

Texas is the beautiful, warm beaches of the Gulf Coast of South Texas.

Texas is the shiny skyscrapers in Houston and Dallas.

Texas is world record bass from places like Lake Fork.

Texas is Mexican food like nowhere else, not even Mexico.

Texas is the Fort Worth Stockyards, Bass Hall, the Ballpark in Arlington and the Astrodome.

Texas is larger-than-life legends like Michael DeBakey, Denton Cooley, Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Janis Joplin, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Landry, Darrell Royal, Joe Da vis, E ric Dickerson, Earl Campbell, Nolan Ryan, Sam Rayburn, George H.W.Bush, Lyndon B.Johnson, George W. Bush.

Texas is great companies like Dell Computer, Texas Instruments, Compaq, Lockheed Martin Aerospace, Home of the F-16 Jet Fighter and the JSF Fighter.

Texas is NASA.

Texas is huge herds of cattle and miles of crops.

Texas is skies blackened with doves, and fields full of deer.

Texas is a place where towns and cities shut down to watch the local High School Football game on Friday nights and for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and for the night in Old San Antonio River Parade in San Antonio.

Texas is ocean beaches, deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains and prairies, and modern cities.

If it isn’t in Texas, you probably don’t need it.

Texas even has its own power grid!

No one does anything bigger or better than it’s done in Texas.

Our state capitol building is the only one in the country that is taller than the capitol building in Washington, D.C. and we can divide our state into five states at any time if we wanted to! We included these things as part of the deal when we came on. That’s the best part, right there.

By federal law,Texas is the only state in the U.S. that can fly its flag at the same height as the U.S. flag. Think about that for a second. You fly the Stars and Stripes at 20 feet in Maryland, California, or Maine and your state flag, whatever it is, goes at 17 feet. You fly the Stars and Stripes in front of Pine Tree High in Longview or anyplace else at 20 feet, the Lone Star flies at the same height – 20 feet.

Do you know why?Because Texas is the only state that was a republic before it became a state.

Hey,

This is one of those nuts days. We kick off the news with a bang every Thursday morning. I hit the coffee and the computer simultaneously and don’t stop staring at the screen until I’ve downloaded all the news–unless I’m interrupted.

Today was packed with disruptions, like the dogs tearing shit up, the phone ringing, emergencies, doctor appointments, you name it. All the sniveling aside, this is going to be a helluva Thursday news, but I have a comment first:

We need to make, “Made in America,” a strident code and work on it. I like the people of China, Tawain and Korea. I don’t hold any grudges. I know we’re rapidly heading in a World economy direction, but we need to refocus on our homeland and support our quality product base. It’s easy, look for that Made in the U.S.A. line on any products and pay a little extra to support our working base. You don’t need to follow the code for every purchase, but keep it in mind always. I’ll mention a couple of supportive facts at the end of the news. Now let’s hit it:

AMSOIL HARLEY BANNER

AMSOIL FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSONS–In Test Results of Industry Standard Four-Ball Wear Testing, Harley-Davidson’s Own “Genuine” Oil Produces A High Wear Scar vs. Other Leading Motorcycle Oil’s!

Harley-Davidson Maintains That You Use Their “Genuine” Oil, yet Harley Davidson Doesn’t Even Make Their Own Oil.

Learn The Facts About Harley-Davidson Oil in this Eye-Opening Article written by A.J. Amatuzio, President and CEO of AMSOIL INC.

“A situation my daughter, Lyn, told me about recently got me to thinking about how good it is to be able to blend our own oils and have complete control over our own product quality.

Lyn loves to ride motorcycles. She recently purchased a Harley-Davidson bike and took it to the local Harley shop to have our new AMSOIL Motorcycle Oil installed. The mechanic took issue with her not using the oil Harley-Davidson sells, saying, “I’ll use AMSOIL motor oil when AMSOIL starts making motorcycles!”

How would you answer a challenge like that? I was pleased to hear Lyn’s response. She said, ” I’ll start using Harley-Davidson motor oil when Harley starts making oil!”

Perfect! The fact is that Harley-Davidson, like so many other “brands” of oil, contract with one or more oil companies to make their lubricants. Often, the decision as to who actually makes a private labeled product is based on low bid, and like almost everything manufactured by a low bidder, short cuts are taken in order to meet the low price.

Now there’s nothing wrong in having a goal to make money, but let’s get real here. Why would anyone want to use a product manufactured down to a price rather than up to high quality standards? We have tested a number of these private label motor oils and two-cycle oils and we found that many are mediocre quality products. None of them even comes close to performing as well as AMSOIL lubricants, and that’s a fact!

Our Motorcycle Products Brochure, G-391, includes wear comparisons of AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils vs. other oils, including H-D “Genuine”. Both our oils demonstrate superior wear protection over all other tested brands. Interestingly enough, the highest wear scar in this test turned out to be Harley-Davidson’s own “Genuine” oil!

There is a good reason why AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils protect so well against wear. They are formulated with significantly higher levels of zinc and phosphorus, which when included in proper formulation with other high quality additives, provide superior wear protection at the high operating temperatures typical of motorcycles. In addition, synthetic oils inherently reduce sump temperatures so the engines actually run cooler.

The fact is, Harley would do well to have AMSOIL make their oils for them. Then they could be assured that their oil was indeed a superior product. As it is, there may be absolutely nothing wrong with their oil for use in average service, but I guarantee you as the oil temperature gets hotter, like it does when sitting in traffic on asphalt on a hot summer day, the Harley-Davidson with AMSOIL in the crankcase is going to be far better protected and run far cooler than the bike with H-D “Genuine” oil in it. There’s just no two ways about it!

So, my daughter Lyn will be going back to this mechanic armed with the facts about AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils and a few facts about H-D oil. Nobody’s going to tell her that her dad’s oils are not the very best. She knows better, and she’s on a mission to prove her point. Who knows? Knowing Lyn, she might sign up another AMSOIL Dealer in the process.”

AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-40 and 20W-50 motorcycle oils give motorcyclists what they need: Superior wear protection for high- stress motorcycle engines and transmissions that stay clean and deposit-free.

Got on the phone called the wife. She went out to look and see if it was still there, and it was. Holy shit, couldn’t believe it. Now I know why my mother always gave me those stupid fucking mittens with the yarn to connect them together, but anyway, was a great sunny day, about 10 degrees Celsius. BIKERNET FINANCIAL SEMINAR–Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.

The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest, and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort. He further announced that he would now buy at $20. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.

Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it!

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him.

In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers. “Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each.”

The villagers rounded up with all their savings and bought all the monkeys. Then they never saw the man nor his assistant, only monkeys everywhere!

Now you have a better understanding of how the stock market works.

MORE ON TWIN CAM GEAR CAM TECH– Nice shot of the gear drive on the home page! Just put some of those in myself a couple of years back…you probably know this, but one thing to check, if it’s not in the installation instructions….look at the photo, see where the large gear (cam gear) looks like it’s touching the casing by the bolt hole, left side, third from bottom? On the cam cover, make sure you grind a little meat away from that area so the gear doesn’t hit there when it spins. Not much has to come off. Maybe 1/8th inch, max…..

Ride on!

A ZEN MOMENT FROM SIN WU–A group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking at areunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now retired. During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress intheir work and lives. Offering his guests hot chocolate, the Professor wentinto the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot chocolate and anassortment of cups – porcelain, glass, crystal, some plain looking, someexpensive, some exquisite – telling them to help themselves to the hotchocolate.

When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said,”Notice that all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken, leaving behindthe plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the bestfor yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.

The cup that you’re drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the hot chocolate. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides whatwe drink.

What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup; butyou consciously went for the best cups…and then you began eyeing eachother’s cups.

Now consider this: LIFE is the hot chocolate; your job, money and positionin society are the CUPS. They are just tools to hold and contain life. Thecup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hotchocolate God has provided us. God makes the hot chocolate, man chooses thecups. The happiest people don’t have the best of everything. They just makethe best of everything that they have

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. And enjoy yourHOT CHOCOLATE!”

They wear the same leather jackets, bandanas and grease spots as the next guy. The thing is – they are not the next guy.

Women are the fastest-growing segment in motorcycling. From 1998 to 2003, women riders increased 36 percent – or an increase of 167,600 new women riders in five years, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council.

This year’s show headlines Women in Motorcycling. To help promote motorcycle safety and rider education among women riders, Allstate will sponsor Gina Woods’ XX Chromes-All Woman Bike Build at the 27th Annual Cycle World International Motorcycle Show, Feb. 8 – 10.

Gina Woods’ XX Chromes -All Woman Bike Build is a team of four women bike builders who will roll into Chicago and descend upon the convention center for three awesome days of wrist-wrenching, tool-torqueing, knuckle-busting, bike-building in front of a live audience to benefit Mooseheart Child City & School. The “Moose Bike” will go on a raffle tour across the country, with a stop at the International Moose Convention in Las Vegas this June!

“It’s not about taking the backseat anymore, it’s about taking the reins and heading down the Open Road” , said Woods, a motorcycle talk show host of Open Road Radio (airs – Sunday 11a-12p on 9 FM: 92.5, 92.7 & 99.9 ) and creator of the XX Chromes-All Woman Bike Build.

“I think women joining the ranks of men riders, motorcycle mechanics, & motorcycle business owners is fantastic! The women of today are confident & feel empowered to fulfill their dreams & destiny – women can be & do anything they set their mind to. Women have helped to improve this industry through their products, services, safety training & leadership” Woods said. “It’s not just the guys building anymore – Our All Woman Bike Building team’s record is 5 hours & 5 minutes!

“Women call into our show all the time with questions about bikes and great comments like – Attta Girl!” remarks Gina

The Builders are:
Laura Klock – From Klockwerks – Fastest Woman on a bagger
Jasmine Clark – Owns Bluecreek Art Works and Motorcycle Training Co.; Author and certified MSF instructor
Jessi Combs – Custom metal fabricator, leading TV personality, motorcycle enthusiast.
Kim Jordan – Harley mechanic that left Las Vegas Harley Davidson in 2006 to take a break and build a log cabin with her dad. Kim is looking forward to getting back into the motorcycle Industry

2006 was a motorcycle industry first showcasing an All Women Bike Build created by Gina Woods. The first ever event was held at Open Road Radio’s Fat Fest 2006 for Breast Cancer Awareness. The second All Woman Bike build was completed at the 3rd Annual Midwest Cyclemania show in Green Bay, WI on April 21st, 2007. And they built the bike in just 5 hours and 5 minutes for Cancer Charities!

Open Road Radio -92.5, 92.7 & 99.9 will emcee three days of excitement, thrills, entertainment and a LIVE broadcast from the Allstate stage Sunday Feb 10th starting at 11 am on 9 FM.To add to the festivities there will be autograph sessions with the builders, on stage interviews with Motorcycle Industry experts, contests, prizes, giveaways and more!

“Allstate is committed to educating motorcyclists about the potential risks and best safety practices,” said John Anderson, Director of Marketing, Allstate. “Riding is a great way to leave life’s cares behind, but there are hazards on the road. That’s why simple precautions like helmet use are so important.”

Allstate representatives will be on site at the show, offering show goers free insurance quotes and answering insurance-related questions. In addition, the Allstate Chopper will be available for visitors to view and register to win, built by Chicago hometown boys Clutch Creal and his crew from Chopper College?.www.choppercollege.comTo learn more about motorcycle safety and insurance please visit www/allstate.com or click on the link to find out more about

Trouble 05-10 days-5x7

Bandit?s brother, Trouble. He?s reaching for his daddy, Rogue?

MANY THINGSI liked some of the Zen notes in the news. I believe we’ve scrambled our lives with way too much crap. On the other hand nothing slows down. Ah, but what was said is the truth. Find adventure everyday. Find some time to spend with friends and soft seductive women, and dig up some time to relax and tinker in the shop.

But don’t go away from Bikernet. Fortunately, we archive every goddamn thing on the site, so you can roll over here any time, night or day, Sundays, Holidays, whenever, and find something new, or that old article or tech you need.

S&Scarb
We’re working on a S&S Super E tech.

Here’s what’s coming up. Paul is going to follow his bike accident on Bikernet and let us know how Geico treats him. Chris Callen just sent me a report on the evil Walmart empire. We have a short succinct tech on a brake component from Rogue, a Knockout Boardtrack feature, a couple more features, some new Girls of Bikernet are headed this way and we find ourselves dedicating a lot of space to Sportsters this year. Paul Garson is going to retro his new 2004 Sportster Custom. Jon Towle is performing a series of illustrative 2008 Sportster roadtests and there’s another Sportster series in the wings. What the fuck is it? It escapes me. And I’m going to build another Panhead desk. You’ll see it come together here on Bikernet.

dissel
This is one of our upcoming bike features, by Dissel, in Florida.

Plus, as of tomorrow, I’m starting to work on my next book. The first rough draft is in the Cantina, but I’m going to shake it up, and you’ll find a reworked Vince and Chance series, then Change strikes out on his own. Hang on, have a helluva weekend and don’t let these snivelin’ financial bastards get you down.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
