LEGEND OF THE MOTORCYCLE CONCOURS D? ELEGANCE— You think they could?ve added one more word to the name? Maybe not, but that?s where Bandit is heading with a group of guys. They left yesterday morning and are taking their time, cruising up the coast. Christian from Sucker Punch riding an old panhead, Billy on a Knuckle and Bandit & Jeremiah both on shovels.

billy christian

They rode as far as Santa Maria yesterday and plan on cruising even slower today to arrive in Half Moon, Ca tomorrow. Bandit checked in last night and said the ride was perfect; I?m glad.

So, in the usual Layla fashion, the news will be short cause I?ve got some goofing off to do. Shopping, animals to spoil, girlfriends to play with? Enjoy the news!

BIKERNET EDITOR SCORES KING–Had an interesting day yesterday. I rode into Raleigh with the sole intention of getting some patches sewn on my vest (including the Bikernet patch you sent me). But in addition to getting the patches done, I rode home on a new-to-me 2007 FLHR Road King. Oh, the trouble I get myself into!  I got what I asked for out of my trade, a fair price for the King, and I got them to throw in a factory service manual, too.

It?s dark red, 18K miles, and was previously part of Ray Price H-D?s rental fleet. First impressions after just a few miles:

?The 96? twinkie is a torquey, powerful sumbitch, very smooth, and will rocket up to 80 mph in no time. I?m not gonna mess with the fuel management for the time being; besides, I?ve still got a year to burn on the OEM warranty.
?Heat ? It puts out noticeably more heat out of the right side; I mostly feel it on my calf. No big deal, although some folks have complained about it, but I don?t see it as a problem, because I?m not one of those clowns who putts around in shorts and flip-flops.
?The tranny ? Smooth, although there?s a bigger gap between 1 and 2. Easy to overcome; you?ve just got to wind out first gear a little more. As far as the noise that some folks complain about with the straight-cut first and fifth gears, I haven?t noticed it. You don?t want to take it into sixth gear unless you?re cruising along at 70 mph-plus, IMO, even though the manual says 50 mph.
?Handlebars ? The stock bars suck and they?ll be the first to go. Too low and forward for my comfort, even though at 5?7? and 160, I?m not a knuckledragger. But more good luck ? a friend of mine in Fort Worth is gonna send me a set of Heritage bars gratis.
?Might search for a seat that drops me down ∏-1 inch. No problem flat-footing the bike, but I could use just a cunt hair more for better leverage when backing the bike.
?Oh, yeah; new buyers get to participate in an in-store poker run. I got a flush, which won me a $300 gift certificate. Burned up some of that this morning when I dropped off my old title and spare keys.

Above is a quick & dirty shot in the garage. Couldn?t shoot outside because it?s raining cats & dogs now. The good news is I didn?t get caught out in it. Cams will be coming. Had a pair of Andrews 26Gs in my Softail. It?s gonna be interesting, though, to see how the hydraulic shoes in the 96? twinkies fare compared to the old spring-loaded jobs in the 88. Speaking of cams, have you read Donny Peterson?s piece in American Iron on the Woods setup? An indy I know in Decatur, TX swears by ?em.

Bonneville Book

How to Build A Bonneville Salt Flats MotorcycleAuthor: Keith R. Ball–The phrase, Bonneville Salt Flats, strikes a chord with any true gear-head. For motorcycle enthusiasts the allure is even stronger. How to Build a Bonneville Salt Flats Motorcycle documents the construction of ?The Worlds Fastest Panhead,? conceived and assembled by Keith R Ball, former editor or Easyriders magazine and current owner of Bikernet.com, the most popular biker stop on the internet.

Keith walks the reader through all the steps involved in the creation of a true Bonneville Salt Flats motorcycle. From choosing a class to picking a frame, from finding an engine builder to minimizing the aerodynamic drag at 200 miles per hour, Keith grinds his teeth and lots of steel throughout the entire process. ?It includes how to make guess-work fly,? Ball said.

A project of this size is bound to suffer setbacks. Keith Ball uses a personal, narrative style to take the readers on a wild ride, through the ups and downs of building The World?s Fastest Panhead. So come along for the ride down the salt with the man who is perhaps the best-known motorcycle journalist.

LAUGHLIN GOOD OR BAD?–No matter what sort of doom and gloom you might hear, Laughlin was a pretty good show. Traffic was not as high as last year (how is that a bad thing?) and yes, there where room available and the wait for restaurant seating was little if any (again, how is this bad?). From a vendor perspective, sales where decent and the weather was even good. On another note, check this out. Signals built into the shock for the Dyna and Sporty guys. Too cool. David Z.

A.B.A.T.E. OF LOUISIANA, INC. HELMET FIGHT– Louisiana now has five helmet modification Bills of one kind or another. With each Bill bringing something different to the table you almost need a score card to keep up with them. The following Bills Abate Of La., Inc. supports in their current format:

HB 1295 Rep. M.J. Smiley (Dist. 88)Requires anyone under the age of 18 to wear a motorcycle helmet and requires anyone seeking their first time endorsement to pass a Louisiana approved Motorcycle Operators Training Course effective 7/1/09. Anyone with an endorsement prior to that time will not be required to take the course.

SB 9 Sen. Eric LaFluer (Dist 28)Anyone with an endorsement prior to that time will not be required to take the course.

SB 9 Sen. Eric LaFluer (Dist 28)Requires anyone under the age of 18 to wear a helmet. Those 18 and older who choose not to wear a helmet must obtain a $10,000.00 personal health insurance policy.

SB 83 Sen. Eric LaFluer (Dist 28)Requires anyone under the age of 21 to wear a helmet. Those 21 and older who choose not to wear a helmet must obtain a $10,000.00 personal health insurance policy.

SB 85 Sen. Eric LaFluer (Dist 28)Authorizes people 21 years of age or older to operate a motorcycle or scooter which is 250cc or less on a publ

SB 673 Sen. Eric LaFluer (Dist 28)Requires anyone under the age of 21 to wear a helmet.

After discussions with Representative Smiley he has informed me that our biggest obstacle will be Senator Joel T Chaisson, II the Senate Speaker, and the Senate Health and Welfare Committee that these Bills are getting assigned to in the Senate. We need to start e-mailing and calling these Senators. Senator Chaisson is a co-sponsor of the current helmet law and five of the seven Committee members voted in favor of it. For a list of the House Transportation and the Senate Health and Welfare Committee members go to http://www.abateoflouisiana.org , click on the Legislative Updates page and find the link under the list of Bills.

With over 140,000 motorcyclists in the State of Louisiana now is the time for us to make our voices heard and stand together. We now represent a large voting bloc that will be heard if we exercise our rights by contacting our Representatives and Senators and we need to do this now before these Bills are addressed in Committee. Always remember:

One voice is but a whisper, but a thousand voices are a ROAR!

CRO CUSTOMS CHECKIN? IN–Bandit, Hope all is well my man. You missed the best EDR ever! Ton’s of pictures floating around. Some amazing riding, great people, cool bikes. We would have all been arrested if we did the run in the states.

While on the EDR, I finally got to meet Michael Lichter. What a crazy fucker he his. Hanging off the back of bikes doing 90+ shooting pictures! I was honored that he invited me to be part of the Stay Gold show at Sturgis Bike Week 2008. It is a great concept with some fantastic builders. You know I’m not a big “show” builder and it is hard to let my bike sit in some display when it should be on the road, but I am very flattered to be part of it. So, now I actually have to clean my bike up.

Best,

BIKERNET TRIAL SEMINAR–After a trial had been going on for three days, Finley, the man accused of committing the crimes, stood up and approached the judge’s bench. “Your Honor, I would like to change my plea from innocent to guilty of the charges.”

The judge angrily banged his fist on the desk. “If you’re guilty, why didn’t you say so in the first place and save this court a lot of time and inconvenience?” he demanded.

Finley looked up wide-eyed and stated, “Well, when the trial started, I thought I was innocent, but that was before I heard all of the evidence against me.”

I’m going to auction this bike off next week at the Half Moon Bay event. But I’m going to build another 1928 styled bike, like the one below from Joe’s garage, whatta jewel. She’ll be built with a Power Plus or a flathead 80 engine and use a Rick Krost/Paughco chassis.

We’re just about to wrap up a tech with Progressive Suspension, Rivera/Primo and Paughco while making a classic ’61 Panhead look cool and be able to corner. We also have a tech on modified footboard mounting. I need to check it out. It repositions the foot boards slightly. If you’re anxious, check out: wildbillscycles.com.

Let’s see. What else is on my plate? I think my movie deal crumbled, but there’s always something else on the horizon. I have movie project based on motorcycling freedom and fighting for it, that I want to promote. I need to jump back into the shop, oil my O-ring chain and get ready to ride.

Meet Miss Sturgis 2008Nevada motorcycle enthusiast Rachel Rilley wins on-line contest–After thousands of votes and an in-person interview with a diverse panel of judges, Rachel Rilley of Henderson, NV, has been selected as Miss Sturgis 2008. Rachel?s bubbly personality, combined with a knockout figure and brains to match (she has a degree in chemistry), make her the quintessential Miss Sturgis. Rachel is heading off to Boston in May for her ?Sturgis Rally News? cover photo shoot with Aerosmith?s Steven Tyler. During Sturgis Bike Week, Miss Sturgis signs posters, conducts radio interviews and is frequently interviewed herself. During the year, as Miss Sturgis, Rachel will be appearing at bike and trade shows across the country.

Two of Rachel?s greatest loves are people and riding. ?I?m eager to meet people from around the country and experience their culture and stories and hear about their travels,? says the new Miss Sturgis. ?Being a motorcycle enthusiast is more than just a sport or a hobby, it?s a lifestyle! I encourage all my fans and friends, to please come see me at Thunder Road and tell me all about your adventures? Feel free to ask me if I wanna ride, because the answer is yes!?

The Girls of Sturgis Bike Week have been already been together for several autograph sessions, with more scheduled in conjunction with their calendar photo shoots. To see more of the ladies and hear their radio interviews, log on to www.misssturgis.com. You can meet them all at Thunder Road during Sturgis Bike Week, where they will be signing free calendars.

NO FEAR IN CAPE FEAR, Posted: April 23, 2008–Cape Fear, North Carolina: March 16, 2008:You may already be aware of the heroics of several members of the Cape Fear HOG Chapter during a robbery at a BP gas station in North Carolina, on March 16th. What you might not know is that some of the bikers were Accident Scene Management instructors.

Accident Scene Management, Inc, (ASMI) is supported by Hupy and Abraham, S.C. Our law firm has donated thousands of dollars to ASMI to help start the program and to offset some of the registration fees for students. To learn more about ASMI, visit . www.accidentscene.org

ASMI instructors are community servants. They not only are dedicated to reducing injuries and fatalities to motorcyclists but are being recognized for their recent actions when a gas station was being robbed. The robbers, Alphonso Stevenson, aka Mannie, and his 15 year old accomplice, with the street name Block, are among a group of men responsible for 16 robberies of convenience stores, restaurants and gas stations in the Cape Fear area. Stevenson was charged with 5 counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, 5 counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and 5 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Block was charged with 5 counts of conspiracy. They are being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center.

The following is the story told by Steve Adams, one of the ASMI instructors who responded.

steveadam
Steve Adam: ASMI Assistant Instructor, U.S. Army Special Forces, Cape Fear HOG, CBA/ABATE

Members of our local HOG Chapter were meeting at our typical link up point at the BP Station on Bragg Boulevard, prior to going on a Progressive Breakfast Ride. Around 20 of us were milling around outside the station waiting on everyone to show up when the woman working inside hit the window and yelled, “they are robbing me”! Just then we heard a gun shot and a scream. Immediately, two members ran around the front of the store as I ran around the back side.

Two young men exited the store at a dead run. We yelled for them to stop and took up chase. Keep in mind we are old and slow but their baggy pants were falling down and they struggled with the fact that they did not have their shoes tied! Several of us where armed, drew our pistols for defense and took aim twice (North Carolina allows persons to carry concealed weapons). We chased them for about a 1/4 mile when they turned the corner by the strip mall. Several of our members were in pursuit on their bikes. As one member, Jerry, came around the corner they shot at him twice, but fortunately missed. We chased them into a wooded area just as the Police arrived.

A couple members rode their bikes down the road and blocked the robbers from crossing over into a thicker wooded area. When they saw the road was blocked they ran back up a hill and climbed over a chain link fence where they hid under a parked car. They where arrested when they where spotted and the K-9 Unit arrived. The first words out of their mouths when arrested were, “Them bikers are crazy”!

Luckily they shot at and missed the store clerk; however a fragment did hit her leg. Peggy Quatrone, an ASMI Lead Instructor, pulled up to the station while we where in pursuit. She attended to the store clerk.

Peggy Quatrone

I guess the bottom line was that we got pretty pissed at the arrogance of those little buzzards who thought they could rob our gas station with us outside. I guess after so many robberies they were expecting us to just stand by and watch and didn?t expect a bunch of guys with guns chasing them! The Fayetteville PD has recommended us for a Civilian award and letters of appreciation. They are going to host a dinner and ceremony sometime in May.

CAMPING FOR THUNDER IN THE VALLEY JUNE 26 TO 29–Dropped ya a line a few weeks ago bout a campground we are holding for Thunder in The Valley weekend June 26th to the 29 of this year. Need a bit of help getting the word out to folks and vendors that are in Laconia the week before the event. We are located in Ebensburg PA which is about 17 miles from the center of the rally in Johnstown. Thunder is in its 11th year and as I see at allot of rally’s now days the cost to stay at the event are out of site. Well we are out to change that.

How’s $5 to get in and see a band and a tent campsite sound? That’s right your admission gets you a campsite. $1 beers as well. RV spaces are available for a bit more (we got to pay extra for those so..) and all the normal games and events you would see at an event like this.I’m tired of the bullshit gouging of all of us and we are going to try to do something about it with the help of our brothers and sisters in ABATE of PA. Best part is your helping fund a SMRO as well as allowing us to help out some needy local families. Thanks for your help Bandit,Dave Lydick,President Cambria Summit ABATECell (814) 505-2998E-Mail dml389@verizon.net PS.. any vendors headpin back past us drop me a line, may as well make a few bucks on your way back home. we have some space left and trust me your going to make cash on this, we aren’t gouging you guys either!

Here’s Dave as a kid on his first chop.

TIRED OF BAD MOTORCYCLE PRESS, DAVE WROTE LOCAL NEWS PAPER–Feel free to share the following with your local newspaper:

What’s Good for Motorcyclists Is Good for You Too

Motorcyclists often get a bad rap. Some say cycles are too loud and some note the folks who ride cycles dart around their towns like crazed squirrels. For reasons such as these a motorist may not like sharing the road with motorcycles. But, did you know motorcycles are good for you?

Dave3

Motorcycles?
” Get 35-75 mpg, which reduces our demand on fuel (Which can eventually help lower fuel prices) and reduce the consumption of non-renewable resources
” Require significantly less materials and resources to manufacture them than a car or truck
” Use a relatively small amount of road space, which reduces gridlock in congested areas
” Can be ridden in HOV lanes, which improves traffic flow on highways
” Can be parked up to 4-vehicles per car space, providing more room for cars & trucks
” Roll on 2-wheels and weigh between 300 and 800 lb, which is a fraction of cars & trucks. And they’re ridden an average of only 715 to 2900-miles per year (Motorcycle Industry Council estimate), which means they’re barely wearing the road surfaces they ride on.

Dave4

And, did you know that motorcycles in states like California and Arizona are charged license fees according to their MSRP, not their road usage or vehicle weight? That means motorcyclists there pay a disproportionate amount of taxes for road wear they don’t even cause. In states like CA and AZ a new Harley-Davidson or Honda Gold Wing owner can be paying over $200 per year to ride less than 3000-miles!

Additionally, Arizona and California’s motorcycle industry impacts their retail marketplace to the tune of roughly $692-million dollars and $3-billion dollars per year respectively (Motorcycle Industry Council estimate for 2006), paying taxes and employing thousands of individuals along the way.

Last note, May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. As you can see, motorcycles are good for everyone – not just those who ride them. So, please watch out for us. We don’t need your thanks, we just ask that you don’t run into us!

–Dave Koshollek – Motorcyclist for 40-years

JASON LEE & GIOVANNI RIBISI TO PRESENT ELVIS AWARD AT LEGEND OF THE MOTORCYCLE– For immediate release. San Francisco ? 23 April 2008 ? Motorcycles and rock ?n? roll have always gone hand in hand, each representing a spirit of rebellion, self-expression and freedom.

To celebrate this spirit and pay tribute to a music legend who loved motorcycles, the exclusively licensed Elvis Award, proudly sponsored by Lucky Brand Jeans, will once again be presented at the upcoming Legend of the Motorcycle Concourse and will be conferred by actors, rock ?n? roll aficionados and motorcyclists Jason Lee and Giovanni Ribisi.

Friends and riding partners Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl, Vanilla Sky, The Ballad of Jack & Rose) and Giovanni Ribisi (Flight of the Phoenix, Gone In 60 Seconds, Cold Mountain) will select and present the special award for the bike they feel best represents the King of Rock ?n? Roll out of a field of over 250 rare and historic motorcycles spanning over a century of history and popular culture.

Furthermore, Lee will unveil his custom motorcycle, the Bullet Falcon, on Concours morning with builder Ian Barry of Falcon Motorcycles.

Says Lee, ?I?ve always been into motorcycles, having ridden dirt bikes as a kid, but as I got older I became fascinated with vintage British and Japanese bikes. When I saw a photo of an old Reading Standard board track racer I knew I wanted to build something as beautiful and unique, and I knew the only person for the job was Ian. I never could?ve imagined how incredible the end result would be.?

Lee has a small but substantial collection of rare motorcycles. He?s not just a collector, but also a daily rider. One day pal and fellow actor Ribisi showed up on a custom Triumph that Lee couldn’t get out of his mind, so he arranged to meet with it’s builder, Ian Barry. Barry had been dreaming up ideas to build bikes not unlike the one Jason was envisioning, so it was a meeting of minds and the year-long process of building the Bullet Falcon began.

Lee, Ribisi, Barry, the Bullet Falcon and the Elvis award will all come together in just ten days from now at the third annual Legend of the Motorcycle on Saturday, May 3rd in Half Moon Bay, California (just south of San Francisco). For tickets and more information on this unique world event, visit: LegendoftheMotorcycle.com.

THE FISHING LESSON–A man was on the water for his weekly fishing trip. He began his day with an 8 Lb walleye on the first cast and a7 Lb on the second. On the third cast he had just caught his firstever walleye over 11 pounds when his cell phone rang.

It was a doctor notifying him that his wife had just been ina terrible accident and was in critical condition and in theICU. The man told the doctor to inform his wife where he was andthat he’d be there as soon as possible.

As he hung up he realized hewas leaving what was shaping up to be his best day ever on thewater. He decided to get in a couple of more casts before heading tothe hospital He ended up fishing the rest of the morning, finishing his trip with a stringer like he’d never seen, with 3 walleyeover 10 pounds. He was jubilant…. Then he remembered his wife.

Feeling guilty he dashed to the hospital. He saw the doctorin the corridor and asked about his wife’s condition. The doctor glared at him and shouted, ‘You went ahead andfinished your fishing trip didn’t you! I hope you’re proud ofyourself! While you were out for the past four hours enjoying yourself on thepond your wife has been languishing in the ICU! It’s just as wellyou went ahead and finished because it will be more than likely thelast fishing trip you ever take!’ ‘For the rest of her life she will require ’round the clockcare. And you’ll be her care giver forever!’ The man was feeling so guilty he broke down and sobbed.

The doctor then chuckled and said, ‘I’m just messin’ with ya. She’s dead. What’d you catch?’

HOT BIKE MAGAZINE BECOME CONSUMER MEDIA PARTNER WITH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP–We are pleased to announce that magazine publisher Source Interlink Media and Dealer-World USA, operator of AMD Magazine’s Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building, have signed an agreement that makes Hot Bike Magazine the event’s Official consumer Media Partner.

With a multi-year deal that recognizes the unique status and nature of the Official World Championship, we here at AMD/Dealer-World are proud to have been able to forge an alliance with Hot Bike that will see massive growth in the promotion that the event receives at the consumer level, and deliver a massive boost to the recognition that the event’s Official Partners receive for their support of the event.

Hot bike covers

The agreement includes regular marketing and promotion for the event in all Hot Bike, Hot Bike Bagger and Street Chopper editions for the years ahead, as well as regular editorial coverage of the event and its competitors’ creations within Hot Bike’s pages.

The move marks another stage in the transition of what originated as a ‘trade only’ concept in 2004 into a consumer shop window for a sector of the market that needs promotion and exposure for its ideas and creativity as new generations of riders come of customer age.

An important second major part of this initiative will be an annual Hot Bike produced, high profile news stand SPECIAL EDITION about the World Championship after each year’s event.

With Champions Park essentially sold-out going into this year, the partnership with Hot Bike Magazine marks another stage in the rapid development of an event that is internationally recognized as being the market’s primary showcase for custom motorcycle design and engineering excellence, and one that is now set to deliver on the vision of providing a Sturgis Rally ‘headquarters’ for Rally attendees that are serious about their custom motorcycles and parts and accessory needs.

The 5th annual World Championship of Custom Bike Building will again be an Official Sponsor of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (alongside the likes of Harley-Davidson, Ford, Sony and Coca Cola), and again be the sole (and first ever) officially recognized and endorsed custom bike event of the 2008 Rally.

This year (August 3rd through 6th) will see the event return to occupy an increased size facility at its centrally-located Champions Park venue on Lazelle Street (Lazelle/3rd) at the heart of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.Entries for the World Championship are already being taken (forms are available at www.amdchampionship.com).

The World Championship is supported by an annual Official European Championship that is staged at Custom Chrome’s annual European Dealer Show in Germany each March, and a global network of Official Affiliate events that stretches from Canada, Sweden and Ireland, to Australia, Japan, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands.

World Champion banner

New for this year, the “Cologne Custom Championship” is an invitational affiliate being staged at the prestigious INTERMOT Expo in Germany in October. INTERMOT is one of the single most important motorcycle industry events in the world and its decision to affiliate with the World Championship program will allow us to promote the custom motorcycle lifestyle to an audience of more that 200,000 visitors.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON TURNS DOWN BIKERNET– We’ve tried to reach out to the factory for 8 years. Most of the time they don’t even respond. For 8 years we’ve written articles on bike builds and road tests. We post all their news on a weekly basis.

Over the last couple of years they have quit ignoring the Internet and started advertising, but not on Bikernet. We reach out to their marketing department once a year–just give it a shot. This year we received an unsigned letter in response declining our application.

Whatta shame, although we do work with their communications department on articles on a constant basis and the factory helped us with our last Bonneville effort. It’s too bad they won’t help us pay the bills. I’m going to get a union job working on the docks. If you can put in a good word for us, much appreciated.

Norm Dober-Founder of WindVest

NORM DOBER, FOUNDER OF WIND VEST MOTORCYCLE PRODUCTS, PASSED AWAY– Motorcycle Industry Says Goodbye to a California Legend. WindVest began as a garage idea starting in 1989 when the founder, Norm Dober took a long windblown, bug ridden ride to Sturgis, SD. A native of California, he rode motorcycles starting as a young boy and the love of them never waned. Determined not to return to California without some protection he was given an old beat up sort of windshield found in a friend?s garage in Spearfish, SD. He was able to fashion it on the handlebars and with many adjustment stops on the road made it back to California mostly bug-free and a lot less windblown.

His determination continued as he banged on doors to get his product made and out to the public. From that start his children joined in his quest and as a family, began the product. WindVest moved out of the garage and has never looked back.

WindVest on 2007 Fatboyest

Now as WindVest Motorcycle Products the company builds and ships to the far corners of the world. Continuously researching and developing new screens and other products that are of the highest quality the company strives to maintain its reputation as the best built sport windshield and the most customer oriented company in the motorcycle industry. With a staff of assemblers, office personnel, sales people and shippers the customers are taken care of correctly and in a timely manner.

WindVests are available for Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, Indian, Triumph, Victory, and other cruisers. Custom fits and applications are also available.

Recently Norm Dober, the man who started it all, passed away as a result of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). They are having a memorial run to celebrate Norm?s life. I wanted to share his products and his company with the readers and ask for anyone in the area to go and support this fund raising event.

The event will be held on May 10th at 10am and will consist of a ride through the redwoods to the ocean and back for a party at the WindVest Motorcycle Products headquarters in Campbell, California. There will be food, drinks and live music from The Music Jones.

All money raised will be donated to the American Lung Association. For more information on the company, its products or on the event, contact them online at www.windvest.com www.windvest.com or call at 408-377-7323

TECH QUESTIONS REGARDING S&S BREAK-IN PERIOD AND SYNTHETIC OILS–I see that S&S is now including Mobil 1 oil and filter with their new complete engine package, does this mean there is is no break-in before you go to synthetic?

I wondered why they would include the synthetic oil if you are to run traditional oil for brak-in?

–Dennis
D.A.CUSTOMS

We recommend Mobil 1 v20/50 Synthetic for the life of the engine. Since we suggest a 50-mile oil change, you probably wouldn’t use Mobil 1 synthetic in that fill up, but from that point on, use the Mobil 1. It is all we use in our engines at the factory and shop.

With the constant changing motorcycle market, it is apparent that you have to be creative with your builds. What was Cool a couple years ago is out this year. The High End Customer is replaced with the more Budget strapped customer. This shop version of a Rat Bike, is called the Bar Hoppa. It is an easy riding, easy maintaining Hot Rod looking bike. The majority of this bike was assembled from used parts provided by Roger & myself. What better way to clean out the inventory, and get some fabrication done at the same time?

In honor of James Simonelli – the healthiest guy I know – we may set up Fruit and Yogurt cups for the Fall Flood Run. I hate to see him suffer while everyone else is stuffing their faces with jelly filled death bombs. James, along with Scotty Merritt were the only two bad boyz that had stones enough to ride their bikes over for the gathering.

Thanks to NewsChannel 19 for thinking of coming by to cover what ended up being a non-event. Maybe Dan Breeden can coax the weather Gods to bring us better weather on the 3rd Saturday in Sept. when the Fall Flood run comes around! We’ll keep you posted.

Being the weather was so un-cooperative we’re going to keep the new T-Shirts at Flood Run pricing ($16 for Large & XL – $17.50 XXL) + Shipping for you out-of-towners, thru May 3rd so grab it up before they go up a few bucks!

Peace everyone!

ORANGE COUNTY NAME CHANGE–Since we are actually adding to, and not chopping from, the motorcycles we fabricate and assemble, we have made a decision to change our name to Orange County Adders, or “OCA”.

It is our sincere wish that this does not confuse the many fine corporate clients as well as the numerous private individuals who previously purchased motorcycles from us, possibly under the impression that these bikes were actually choppers, which, in the purest sense of the moniker, they were decidedly not.

After having conducted a long, and at times, rather intense internal debated on the subject matter, we finally arrived at a proper conclusion and decision regarding a name change which we feel to be more in line with our endeavors, and one which is more accurately representative of our company. We further reasoned that it would be the only honorable path to take towards reconciliation with an industry often hostile towards our efforts; an industry which we continue to hold very dear — and one which we do not wish to injure in any way.

We feel that it is of utmost importance, indeed crucial, to make clear the distinction between a custom motorcycle (which is what we produce) and an actual “chopper” or “bobber”, as the difference should be fully understood and disclosed.

As such, we wish to hereby unequivocally state that, we do not, except for on the rarest of occasions, build either “choppers” nor “bobbers”, and so, this clarification accompanied by our new name, will hopefully help guide the un-initiated prospective buyer in the right direction, as well as appease the many veteran and – true chopper and/or bobber – builders throughout our industry.

Going forward, we are very exited about the prospects of creating yet many more colorful and outrageous theme-bikes under this new and far more accurate company name and acronym.

Sincerely,
–Paul Teutul Sr.

ART Motorcycle Heaven

NEW ARTIST APPROACHES BIKERNET–Stephen’s photography caught my eye this weekend and per his response to my comments, he mentioned your name and having been a photographer under your editing.

I am a painter as you may see here in my slideshow . I normally take all of my own images but then again I use many others but chop and clip from theirs to make something altogether different.

ART Lucky Trike

Here are my two latest works dealing with the biker theme I am currently excited about, soon to be professionally shot. Motorcycle Heaven is a local girl named Rachel, sitting on a new Harley near here. The other is one I took of a trike in Marble Falls, the dude who was walking by is now better dressed but otherwise the same.

Hey,

Each week has a personality into itself. Some weeks we receive bad news, grizzly accident scenes and companies crumbling under the economy. The next week it’s all good news, new products, grand openings and good lookin’ broads. The following week will be strewn with creative explorations, bitchin’ art and knockout motorcycles. This week it’s quirky as you will see. Some strange shit from jewel encrusted Mercedes Benz to a Cajun custom bike that will make your skin crawl.

Billy riding

Don’t blame it on Bikernet, we just post the news. Ah, but there’s a couple of hot looking babes. Lets hit it. I gotta tune my Sturgis Shovelhead for the ride to Half Moon Bay with Billy Lane and our sidekick Jeremiah. We’re all riding old rigids. Billy’s riding a Knuck or flathead. He brought backup. I’m riding a 1956, 93-inch Shovelhead and Jeremiah is riding another ’73 Shovel turned rigid. I don’t understand why anyone turned classic Pans into Shovels. I hate Shovels. Shoulda left ’em Pans. Here’s the news:

BIKERNET WEEKLY TOOL RECOMMENDATIONS–CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 24-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A very large pry bar thatinexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the endopposite the handle.

TROUBLE LIGHT: The home mechanic’s own tanning booth. Sometimes called adrop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, “the sunshine vitamin,”which is not otherwise found under cars at night. Health benefitsaside, its main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at aboutthe same rate that 105mm howitzer shells might be used during, say,the first few hours of the Battle of the Bulge. More often darkthan light, its name is somewhat misleading.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lidsand for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil onyour shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip outPhillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used toconvert common slotted screws into non-removable screws.

BIKERNET PHONE REPAIR SERVICE–A Kansas farm wife called the local phone company to report her telephone failed to ring when her friends called – and that on the few occasions, when it did ring, her dog always moaned right before the phone rang.

The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile lady. He climbed a telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialed the subscriber’s house.

The phone didn’t ring right away, but then the dog moaned and the telephone began to ring.

Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found:

1. The dog was tied to the telephone system’s ground wire with a steel chain and collar.
2. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose.
3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signaling current when the number was called.
4. After a couple of jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate.
5. The wet ground would complete the circuit , thus causing the phone to ring.

Which demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning.

Thought you’d like to know.

GERMAN FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR YOUNG, INNOVATIVE COMPANIES PARTICIPATING IN TRADE FAIRS– For the first time, young, innovative companies from Germany can now receive financial support from the German Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) for their trade fair presentations atINTERMOT Cologne 2008. The International Trade Fair forMotorcycles and Scooters, which is taking place in Cologne from 8th to 12th October 2008, is among the 44 internationally leading fairs in Germany at which participation in joint stands can besponsored. The aim of the support programme is topromote exports of new products and processes by helping companies to take part in trade fairs.

Objectives of the support programme

The programme aims to help young companies market their products by taking part in trade fairs. In Germany, the marketing of newly introduced innovations is frequently in need of improvement, especially in the case of people who are starting up newbusinesses. However, leading export-orientated trade fairs such as INTERMOT Cologne 2008 provide young innovative companies in Germany with a platform for expanding into foreign markets ? and therebyfor achieving further growth.

Trade fairparticipation enables such companies to exploit the growth potential offered by international markets. The financial assistance reduces the obstacles young companies face in taking part in theirfirst trade fair, allowing them to become exporters ona sustained basis.

Requirements for receiving financial assistanceTo be eligible for financial support, a young, innovative company must be headquartered in Germany, conform to the valid EU definition of a small enterprise (less than 50 employees or an annualturnover of not more than ?10 million) and be less thanten years old. In addition, the company must have developed new or substantially improved products, processes or services and launched them on the market. If such companies exhibit at INTERMOTCologne at a joint stand, they can receive financialsupport for this participation. To receive assistance, companies must register with Koelnmesse to exhibit at a joint stand by June 2008.

Amount of financial assistance

Financial assistance can be received to cover joint stand participants? costs of rental fee and construction as invoiced by Koelnmesse GmbH. Following the event, 80% of these costs will be refundedto the companies receiving support. The maximumamount of support that each company may receive is ?7,500.

Application forms for this programme can be downloaded in the ?Wirtschaftsf?rderung? section at www.bafa.de. Detailed information on the support programme can also be found at the AUMA website(www.auma-messen.de, Messeplanung Inland / F?rderungdurch Bund).

Report: Hells Angels founder sues HBO over biker series– LOS ANGELES (AP) – The founder of the Hells Angels motorcycle club has sued HBO, claiming the pay cable network cut him out of an upcoming pilot he helped develop, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

Sonny Barger filed a lawsuit in federal court in Los Angeles last week against HBO, production company White Mountain Co. and the project’s writer/executive producer, Michael Tolkin.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series “1 percent” originally was set at an Arizona chapter of the fictional Death Rangers, one of the toughest motorcycle clubs in the country. The central character is a biker, Misfit, sent in from a Northern California chapter to bring it under control.

HBO is getting ready to start production on the show, which will feature Donal Logue as Misfit.

Barger claims in the lawsuit that he and Tolkin pitched HBO on a motorcycle club-centered series. The cable network turned to Tolkin to create it.

A call to HBO for comment wasn’t immediately returned Monday.

Among the objections Barger lists in the lawsuit are “that some characters introduced by Tolkin too close resembled or depicted living persons (in particular a character named `Chief,’ which for decades has been a well-known nickname or alias for Sonny Barger), that some actual place names used in the script were too identifiably associated with Sonny Barger and the Hells Angels (such as the primary location being Carefree, AZ, which is the town adjacent to where Sonny Barger presently resides, and that the principal character has moved from Northern California, which is exactly what Sonny Barger did).”

The name of the Chief character has been changed to Cap, the setting of the show has been moved to Apache Junction, Ariz., and Misfit now comes from Valhalla, Ore.

The lawsuit seeks to make the show’s script a joint work of Sonny Barger Productions and Tolkin, and seeks to keep the program from being sold or telecast. Barger also wants compensation for what he calls the exploitation of his publicity rights.

ABATE of California’s Motorcycle Awareness Month Bill PASSES State SenateSCR 99 Rides to the Assembly–ABATE of CA Lobbyist Jim Lombardo said he would try to have it done by the ABATE So-Cal Regional Rally on Mother’s Day in Lake Elsinore…which would be really cool since I’m the emcee for the Motorcycle Awareness Month Ceremony at the rally…and he’s right on track for making that happen. Thanks, Jim!

This year’s Motorcycle Awareness Month bill for the state of California, SCR 99 – has passed its first hurdle in the state senate. SCR stands for Senate Concurrent Resolution – meaning, it will run concurrently in the Assembly, as well. If the bill had originated in the Assembly, it would have been titled “ACR” for Assembly Concurrent Resolution. SCR=Senate. ACR=Assembly.

What does that mean? Well…if it passes on the Assembly floor, that means it is approved by BOTH houses….and that’s something you can use to get your local media involved – to get them to do news stories and articles asking the public to take notice of motorcyclists. Hey…don’t poo-poo the idea…the life you save just might be your OWN.

Here’s how it went….tell me if you see any of YOUR legislators as a sponsor…or, take a look at how YOUR senator voted on the senate floor. (at the bottom of the page)What? Dunno who your state legislators are? Visit: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html

You have one State Assembly member, and one State Senator representing YOU in Sacramento. There are 40 senators and 80 assembly members making laws for 36,457,549 people. Over one MILLION of those folks have an M1 license….ABATE does this every year – along with gathering up MAM proclamations from cities and counties from all up and down the golden state – in hopes of heightening motorist awareness to motorcycle riders.

Also take note at how the voting isn’t as “partisan” as other votes on issues we’ve monitored in the past….Motorcycle Awareness Month is the ONE issue that almost everyone can agree on, meaning…it’s an excellent opportunity to build relationships with legislators who might otherwise disagree with our “other” issues…make a friend on THIS issue, and they just might “vote with their feet” on another issue of relevance to motorcyclists…which, in a pinch, could help get a bill out of committee when they choose to walk down the hallway for a drink of water instead of sitting there to vote “No.”

Remember…a couple of these folks came on board with us at the very beginning of their political careers…THAT is the time to catch them, during their first election….which….whaddyaknow….just happens to be 2008 for the current crop of newbies. Hint hint.

Contact the ABATEPAC representative in your local and find yerself an ABATEPAC Endorsed Biker Friendly candidate and WORK that campaign and (hopefully) make us a new friend.

With your help TODAY, the sport just might survive – TOMORROW.

That would be a good thing….my dresser – that hasn’t been washed in four or five years, the Fisher-Price Deathmobile thanks you.

Brad’s ’61 Panhead and our shock challenge. Stock shocks are 13.5 inches. He found a set of 11.5 and they’re cool, but a tad low. We considered Legend Air Suspension, but they’re back ordered. We’re working with David Zelma at Progressive Suspension. Report coming soon.

BIKERNET TAKES US BACK TO THE ’60S– It was a hot Saturday evening in the summer of 1960 and Fred had a date with Peggy Sue. He arrived at her house and rang the bell.

‘Oh, come on in!’ Peggy Sue’s mother said as she welcomed Fred in. ‘Have a seat in the living room. Would you like something to drink? Lemonade? Iced tea?’

‘Iced tea, please,’ Fred said. Mom brought the iced tea.

‘So what are you and Peggy planning to do tonight?’ she asked.

‘Oh, probably catch a movie than maybe grab a bite to eat at the malt shop, maybe take a walk on the beach…’

‘Peggy likes to screw, you know,’ Mom informed him.

‘Really’, Fred asked, eyebrows raised?

‘Oh yes’, the mother continued, ‘when she goes out with her friends, they all do!’

‘Is that so’, asked Fred incredulous?

‘Yes’, said the mother, ‘as a matter of fact, she’d screw all night if we let her’.

‘Thanks for the tip’ said Fred as he began thinking about alternate plans for the evening.

A moment later, Peggy Sue came down the stairs looking pretty as a picture wearing a pink blouse and a hoop skirt, and with her hair tied back in a bouncy ponytail. She greeted Fred.

‘Have fun kids!’ the mother said as they left.

Half an hour later, a completely disheveled Peggy Sue burst into the house and slammed the front door behind her.

‘Twist mom!’ she angrily yelled to her mother in the kitchen. ‘The Twist, dammit! It’s called the Twist!’.

VAGABOND CHICKIE SHOP EXPANSION– I am so ready to do some fantastic things- I have great designs for some one-off cool choppers and have some really great things in the works. I started my business with $5,000.00 and a garage full of tools and my passion and love for doing it. Vagabond has grown in leaps and bounds from a tiny warehouse in an industrial park, to a huge store front shop on main roads ( Sample Rd & Dixie Hwy). I have just gotten some really cool merchandise hanging up for the ladies and guys that’s not your typical stuff, so all that is great. But I could use a sponsor to help us expand.

I have created a sponsorship proposal that I can share with interested folks. I’m also going to write a book.

BUD

OILBUD FOR PROTECTING SOFTAIL ENGINES– Means Keeping Oil Temperatures Cool. The Oilbud keeps oil temps cooler and is virtually undetectable.

(HELENA, Mont.) ? March 5, 2008 –The days of sacrificing sleek lines and design style in the name of keeping oil temps cooler are gone. The new Oilbud intercooler efficiently delivers a 35 degree cooling differential, but what?s better, the under mount design means no one knows the Oilbud is onboard.

Perhaps the reluctance to bolt the traditional radiator style oil cooler to the downtube of the frame has left some Harley owners in denial about the importance of oil temperature. Bud Clarke, owner of Oilbud, wasn?t content to let oil temps on his 2005 Softail run at 250 degrees and risk engine trouble.

One day when walking by an experimental airplane he was building at his business Air-Ryder, a thought struck Clarke. If the oil cooler he designed for his turbo charged, intercooled airplane could cool oil temps from 260 degrees to under 200, certainly he could design something for his Softail. And he did.

Inspired by aircraft technology, the Oilbud is built from aircraft quality materials, polished stainless steel tubing, braided stainless hoses and 6061-T6 aluminum extrusion and welded in header tank assembly. The temperature regulator starts to open when oil temps hit 185 degrees and fully opens at 205 degrees. Temperature differentials from the cold to the hot side of the cooler have been measured up to 35 degrees.

The durable Oilbud fits between the frame rails, and once mounted under the motorcycle, it is virtually undetectable. It is designed for 2000-2008 Softails. It is easily installed with no major retrofits required

Cooler oil temperatures means longer engine life. What are the costs when oil gets too hot and breaks down? With Oilbud, Softail owners no longer have to take the chance of running hot oil temps.

WHEELS THROUGH TIME MUSEUM CLOSES DOORS AUGUST 31ST, 2008– Daytona BikeWeek brings out good news and some bad news: The saddestnews this year was out already during the Annual Antique Motorcycle SwapMeet at Eustice. Well known Classic motorcycle specialist and collectorDale Walksler shocked the fans of the Collection at Maggie Valley/NorthCarolina with the announcement to shut down operation. Not because forthe lack of interest or visitors, but for reasons that could bedescribed as harassment by authorities of local government and state.

One of the most precious collections of antique motorcycles in the USA,with more than 65.000 visitors per year and an online-restoration showthat is preserving the heritage of American motorcycling and theotherwise lost knowledge how to restore (and run!) these old machines, thus will move westward and will be downsized considerably!

DalesGouldingTrike

“The museumwill shut down opereation August 31st,” Dale Walksler said, “so everybody who wants to see theexisting collection should hurry up!” Dale will move to the West Coast, somewhere in northern California or Oregon ? and is currently lookingfor a suitable location of approx. 33.000 square feet for his futureprojects and a downscaled version of his stunning collection that willbe scaled down to 125 selected bike.

“I am planning toauction off a part of the collection and plan to move,”said Walksler, former authorised Harley-Davidson dealer, who spent morethan 30 years to get this stunning collection into his own museum. “I am currently looking for a location.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON REPORTS FIRST QUARTER RESULTS —Company Reduces Full Year Shipments and Revises Guidance.

Milwaukee, Wis., April 17, 2008 — Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) today announced its results for the first quarter ended March 30, 2008. Revenue for the quarter was $1.31 billion compared to $1.18 billion in the year-ago quarter, a 10.8 percent increase. Net income for the quarter was $187.6 million compared to $192.3 million, a decrease of 2.5 percent compared to the first quarter of 2007. First quarter diluted earnings per share (EPS) were $0.79, a 6.8 percent increase compared to last year?s $0.74.

?With growing weakness in the economy, U.S. retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles were down 12.8 percent in the first quarter. Although these retail results are disappointing, Harley-Davidson?s U.S. dealers outperformed the heavyweight motorcycle industry, which was down 14.0 percent,? said Jim Ziemer, Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc.

?We?ve said on a number of occasions that we would closely monitor the retail environment and regularly assess our wholesale shipment plans, and we remain committed to shipping fewer Harley-Davidson motorcycles to our worldwide dealer network than we expect they will sell this year. In view of U.S. retail trends and uncertainty about the future of the economy, we now plan to ship 23,000 to 27,000 fewer Harley-Davidson motorcycles in 2008 than we shipped in 2007, resulting in total planned 2008 shipments between 303,500 and 307,500 units,? Ziemer said.

?We will achieve the shipment reduction through temporary plant shutdowns and adjustments to daily production rates. This will result in a decrease of about 370 unionized employees over the next several months. Our management group and union leaders will work together to implement this reduction.?

?The Company will also be reducing the non-production workforce by about 360 jobs. We believe these actions will better position the Company for a business environment that we expect to continue to be challenging,? Ziemer said.

?Harley-Davidson is fortunate to be dealing with the current economic environment from a position of financial strength. We are a great company with an exceptionally powerful brand. We are optimistic about our long term business prospects and we will continue to invest in marketing, product development and our international business to drive future growth.?

?For 2008, the Company now expects earnings per share to decrease between 15 and 20 percent compared to 2007 resulting in expected earnings per share of $3.00 to $3.18,? said Ziemer. This supersedes all previous guidance on earnings per share and other measures.

The Company expects to ship between 76,000 and 80,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the second quarter of 2008.

Motorcycles and Related Products Segment ? First Quarter Results

Revenue from Harley-Davidson motorcycles was $1.02 billion, an increase of $125.7 million or 14.1 percent versus the same period last year. Shipments of Harley-Davidson motorcycles totaled 71,868 units, an increase of 4,107 units or 6.1 percent compared to last year?s first quarter. Shipments in the first quarter of 2007 were affected by a strike at Harley-Davidson?s production plants in York, Pa., that resulted in approximately four weeks of lost production at the facilities.

Revenue from Parts and Accessories (P&A), which consists of Genuine Motor Parts and Genuine Motor Accessories, totaled $181.9 million, a decrease of $6.3 million or 3.3 percent versus the year-ago quarter. Revenue from General Merchandise, which consists of MotorClothes? apparel and collectibles, totaled $84.0 million, an increase of $7.9 million or 10.4 percent over the year-ago quarter.

Gross margin for the first quarter of 2008 was 36.4 percent of revenue compared to 35.9 percent for the first quarter last year. Operating margin remained unchanged at 20.0 percent in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the prior year.

H-D

Motorcycle Retail Sales Data

During the first quarter, worldwide retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles decreased 5.6 percent compared to the prior year quarter. In the U.S., retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles decreased 12.8 percent for the quarter while the heavyweight motorcycle industry in the U.S. decreased 14.0 percent.

Retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles increased 16.8 percent in international markets during the first quarter of 2008 compared to the first quarter of 2007. First quarter retail sales increased 31.1 percent in Canada; the Europe Region was up 7.8 percent; the Asia Pacific Region was up 19.5 percent; and the Latin America Region was up 53.3 percent.

Financial Services Segment

Harley-Davidson Financial Services (HDFS) reported first quarter operating income of $34.9 million, a decrease of $24.0 million or 40.8 percent compared to the year-ago quarter. The decrease is primarily due to a reduction in income from securitization..

Cash Flow

Cash and marketable securities totaled $333.2 million as of March 30, 2008. Cash flow from operations was $146.8 million and capital expenditures were $43.2 million during the first quarter of 2008. The Company repurchased 2.6 million shares of its common stock at a cost of $100.1 million during the first quarter of 2008. On March 30, 2008, the Company had 236.5 million shares of common stock outstanding.

As of March 30, 2008, there were 20.5 million shares remaining on two board-approved share repurchase authorizations. An additional board-approved share repurchase authorization is in place to offset option exercises.

Built to be run as a tiresmoker, this car has enough power to strike the the 12 inch M&Hs on any track and smoke ’em. Full throttle, HARD passes are what it’s built for.

I can complete the car for you, down to a push board for your tow car and even a bitchin’ trailer. (I’ve got cool push cars for sale too) It comes with a sanitary little .063 short body, but I’ll build you any body you want, and paint it too. Check my work here www.condercustom.com

GOOD GOD, THE NEWS IS FINISHED–I swear some of these day kick our butts. By the end of the day the women are leaving me, the animals are clawing the walls, the computers are smokin’ and I’m ready for whiskey.

CDs

I was going to write a music review about these two CDS, but the day escaped. I’ll tell ya quick. Love Ride 24 is a cool set of road songs benefitin’ the Love Ride Foundation, which supported a Kids charity I was involved with a few years back. Gregg Allman is featured with Jeff Healey and Jack Mack and the Heart Attack gang. I got a kick out of ’59, about the year. Every time I worked out I enjoyed listening to that cut. Search American Road Records.com for this set.

I met Deacon Jones here at the Bikernet Headquarters with the Charlie Brechtel band during a show taping. We’re still waiting for the edit to spill onto cable, but I finally listened to Deacon’s Jonesen for Money CD. He’s the master of the Hammond Organ and a phd in the blues. “If blues was money, I’d be a millionaire.” There’s something in those words that hits home. Eddie Money sings some of the vocals and Gregg Allman is also featured. Check Big7productions.com for the cut.

1928 Shovel

Okay, we’ll have more about Indian MC next week. Several killer bike features are due to be launched as I prep for the ride with Billy Lane to the Legends event at Half Moon Bay. We’re going to ride old rigids all 300 miles. He’s straddling a knuck and I’m riding my Sturgis Shovel. He’s coming down to swap old parts. I’ve got a Pope engine and he has a handful of Peashooter parts for my 1929 C effort for Bonneville, somewhere down the road. Tomorrow I’ll deliver our first Nightster road test and Matt and Isaac’s twin choppers feature. Now for Whiskey and pasta or Margarita’s and enchiladas. Roll the dice.

THE HORSE BACKSTREET CHOPPERS ANNOUNCES STURGIS BIKE SHOW– STURGIS, S.D. –April 16, 2008– After the success of last year’s inaugural show, The Horse Backstreet Choppers will bring its second annual The Horse Backstreet Choppers Bike Show to Thunder Road during Sturgis Bike Week 2008. The show will be held Monday, August 4, 2008 and will feature celebrity guest judges, door prizes and giveaways, a burnout pit, live music and beautiful women.

The Horse’s mission is to recognize average Joes who work day jobs and then burn the midnight oil building bikes in their garages, so all hard-core, garage-built backstreet chopper owners are encouraged to enter. Open registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and the winners will be announced at 5 p.m. This year’s panel of celebrity judges will feature Billy Lane of Choppers Inc., Paul Cox of Paul Cox Industries, Russell Mitchell of Exile Cycles, Keino Sasaki of Keino Cycles , Mondo Porras of Denver’s Choppers, Eric Gorges of Voodoo Choppers, Bill Dodge of Bling’s Cycles, Athena “Chickie” Ransom of Vagabond Choppers, and Jeff Cochran and Donny Loos of Sucker Punch Sallys.

“There’s a lot of focus on the big names in this business, but there’s also a lot of talented people who build bikes in their garages,” said Steve Broyles of Stevenson’s Cycles, who is heading up this year’s show. “This show offers average Joes a chance to showcase their work and get some feedback from the celebrity judges.”

Chopper owners will have the chance to test their rides in the burn out pit, and attendees can enter for a chance to win an Evil Engineering belt drive or a Baker 6-speed transmission. There will also be prizes and giveaways from Stevensons Cycle, Bikers Choice, Sucker Punch Sally’s and Fabricator Kevin. But of course, no Sturgis event would be complete without great bikes and great babes, so be sure to cast your vote in the wet T-shirt contest that will take place on the Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse stage.

Competing bikes will be on display from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Thunderdome at Thunder Road. Admission to the Thunderdome is $5, but there is free parking and Glencoe Gold campers get in free. For more information, please visit www.thunderroadsturgis.com.

OLDAD

Information Needed for Support of the Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts Board Item–The Air Resources Board would like the following questions answered by the industry associations and the individual motorcycle part manufacturers. Information generated from these questions will be used to provide costs and economic impact estimates for the board item.

1.What is the total number of impacted businesses? How many are based in California?

2.What percentage of the businesses are small businesses (i.e., have fewer than 250 employees or have gross receipts of less then $2 million annually)?

3.As a whole, what is the estimated annual economic impact that the aftermarket critical emission control components for motorcycles has in California (and nationwide) in terms of sales? What about the aftermarket motorcycle exhaust industry in particular?

4.How many jobs would be created or eliminated as a result of this regulation?

5.Would the regulation affect the ability of California businesses to compete with other sates by making it more costly to produce their products?

6.How much would the regulation monetarily cost impacted businesses over its lifetime? (This is the initial cost plus ongoing costs for the next five years, the default lifetime of a typical regulation). How did you determine these costs? What would these costs translate to in terms of incremental price increases to the consumers?

7.What would be the economic impact expected to be experienced by impacted businesses if they are not allowed to replace stock critical emission control components (like catalytic converters?) on motorcycles within the first four years of their life? (i.e., no action is taken.) Please estimate both direct and indirect costs related to capital, operation and maintenance, and lost business opportunities. Also explain the methodology used to determine these costs.

8.What percentage of California motorcycles do you estimate are modified with aftermarket add-on or modified parts within the first four years of ownership?

9.What effects would the proposed regulation have on your existing operating practices and what modifications, if any, will be needed as a result?

10. What are the annual costs associated with any proposed reporting requirements (e.g., quality audit, in-use testing/reporting, etc.)?

11. What is the total number of motorcycle exhaust systems produced and sold by impacted businesses annually?

12. What is the average cost of a current aftermarket exhaust system considering an impacted business? overall product line? Is there a significant difference in prices charged between the major companies and the smaller businesses?

13.Do the impacted businesses solely produce motorcycle exhaust systems, or are their product lines more diversified (e.g., produces other motorcycle aftermarket parts; produces parts for other vehicle categories, etc.)?

14. What percentage of an impacted business? overall sales of motorcycle exhaust systems are expected to occur in California?

15. What are the typical age and income demographics associated with a purchaser of an impacted business? motorcycle exhaust systems? And what are the types of motorcycles (e.g., touring/cruiser, sport, choppers, scooters, etc.) that are expected to undergo the type of modification described in the regulatory proposal, both now and in the future?

16. How many authorized dealers and/or service locations does each impacted business have in California? What are the required terms and conditions associated with becoming an authorized dealer or service location?

SUPER BAD LEGISLATION PENDING IN FLORIDA–There is a Very Bad piece of legislation pending in the Florida Legislature it is Senate Bill 1992It affects everyone who operates a vehicle not just motorcycle riders.

Even if you agree with part of the bill Please examine all of it. This is Not Good For Florida Motorist and Motorcyclist.

It is very long and covers a multitude of issues. I am sure you will find at least one that you do not agree with. You can find the bill here here.

I am requesting you contact your legislator and request they Vote No on this bill if it makes it to the Senate Floor.

Please let others know about this as well.

IS IT A HEART ATTACK OR A MOTORCYCLE CRASH– I am very concerned about motorcyclist?s well-being. I?ve been riding for well over 20 years and used to be able to enjoy the ride without knowing how vulnerable I was. I?m not talking about protective gear or the fact that we are not surrounded by metal. I?m talking about what happens in the event we go down. Bikers are at much higher risk of dying in the event of a crash.

According to NHTSA?s 2007 Recent Trends in Motorcycle Crashes: ?In 2005, motorcycles made up 2.5 percent of all registered vehicles in the United States and accounted for only 0.4 percent of all vehicle miles traveled (VMT). However, in the same year, motorcyclists accounted for 10.5 percent of total traffic fatalities. Per 100,000 registered vehicles, the fatality rate for motorcyclists (73.12) in 2005 was 5.4 times the fatality rate for passenger car occupants (13.64). Per vehicle mile traveled in 2005, motorcyclists (42.27) were about 37 times as likely as passenger car occupants (1.14) to die in motor vehicle traffic crashes.?

While NHTSA statistics can be in question without other stats to point to, their statistics show an alarming trend. Even if slightly off this is STILL alarming! We (motorcyclists) must not accept the fact that 10.5 % of motor vehicle fatalities are motorcycle related. I have been tracking these statistics for 12 years and they have not changed significantly. While we have put all of our eggs into one basket by concentrating on avoiding the crash in the first place, treatment after the crash occurs has largely been ignored. It not only has been ignored by motorcyclists, it?s been ignored by the Emergency Medical System (EMS) as well! While avoiding the crash in the first place is extremely important, all of our efforts have not significantly changed the number of motorcycle related crashes. (NHTSA – 93Motorcycles{1}).

I recently toured a 911 dispatch center. I asked what advice they would give for a motorcyclist who was not breathing and had a full face helmet on. They said they would recommend that the caller pump on the chest, up to 300 times per minute. I asked a group of 50 motorcyclists how they would treat a motorcyclist who wasn?t breathing and was unconscious. They said THEY would open the airway (head tilt/chin lift) and do chest compressions. I polled EMTs. 75% were not ?comfortable? with the jaw thrust method of opening a person?s airway while keeping the neck straight and 60% had not learned helmet removal as part of their training.

So much needs to be done in the area of Motorcycle Trauma Treatment that I am dumbfounded we have actually survived! While motorcycle rider training and share the road programs should continue in order to prevent the crash in the first place, proper care and treatment after the fact must be addressed in order to reduce the 10.5% of serious injuries and fatalities motorcyclists suffer. The most likely person to be at the scene of a motorcycle crash is another motorcyclist. Treatment can start right away if we are trained in proper care.

In the event that another trained motorcyclist is not there, we want to know that advice given by the 911 dispatcher is correct. When professionals arrive we want to rest assured that they can provide proper care as well.

The American Heart Association recently came out with the recommendation that Chest Compressions only with minimal interruptions has increased survival rates in victims of witnessed cardiac arrest. This has sparked much media attention. For years, CPR was thought to be the ?cure all? for anyone who collapsed for any reason and was not thought to be breathing. There was no clear distinction between trauma and heart attack/cardiac arrest other than an occasional mention of using jaw thrust for someone who might have a neck injury. In the past few years, the American Heart Association has obviously moved away from trauma and is concentrating more on their actual purpose (survival rates of cardiac arrest) vs. survival rates of Trauma. The problem with this is that the general public and even medical professionals have not made the separation.

Both Head Tilt Chin Lift and pumping on the chest are the wrong things to do in a trauma unless Jaw Thrust and Bleeding control measures have not been effective. A Motorcyclist who has crashed so significantly that they are no longer breathing should be highly suspected as a person with high cervical spine neck injury. Jaw Thrust Rescue Breathing keeps the neck straight while lifting the tongue off the back of the throat which is the most likely reason that they are not breathing. Once breathing has been established, circulation should be considered. In trauma, the most likely reasons for loss of circulation is bleeding, not pump failure like in cardiac arrest. Imagine that you have someone who is bleeding and you now start pumping on the chest. You will just help them bleed out faster!

So what can we do? It?s time to take control of our own fate. Helmet removal training is not enough, CPR is not enough, and First Aid is not enough.

1.) Bystander Assistance Trauma training by motorcyclists is the BEST way to start proper care immediately. See www.accidentscene.org to find classes or get more information.
2.) We need to get the attention of the EMS and insist that they give proper advice as well as being certain that they are properly trained in motorcycle specific care from First Responder level to Paramedic. Write to your legislators asking them to contact the US DOT to request that they work with Accident Scene Management, Inc. (ASMI) to develop a module on motorcycle trauma as part of Basic EMT training (currently they only mention helmet removal, but even that is not required).
3.) Get this word out. Reprint this article in your newsletters.
4.) Help get ASMI training in all states and available to all bikers. Encourage Motorcycle groups and organizations to make a donation to ASMI which is leading the way in this topic. ASMI is in 26 states but our goal is to be in every state some day. Because we are so motorcycle specific we are not eligible for most grants. We depend on motorcyclists to help us achieve our goals.

SACRIFICE, SUPPORT AND GRATITUDE–Barnett?s Magazine April / May 2008Issue #61.-Several months ago I was contacted by a soldier in Iraq, SSgt. Damon Fairchild, who asked me to design and build a bike for him. I was and am still honored. Through the build process and my dialog with him, I have really been reminded of my days in Dessert Storm.

I remember what it was like to be away from friends and loved ones. I remember the uncertainty of when I would see them again, the fear of the unknown and chill that went through my body when a scud missile was headed our way or exploded close by. I also remember how much it meant to receive a letter from someone or a care package that included basic things (which we take for granted) or something that reminded us of home.

Let me tell you something. Though my actions were valiant, what I went through then was nothing compared to what our service men and women are going through today.

Fast forward to nowI am so fortunate as are many others. It is awesome to witness the excitement of each new Brass Balls Bobber owner. We go about our daily lives doing what we do. In my case designing timeless bikes, and building a motorcycle brand that will stand the test of time. I also spend and treasure every moment I can with my family, playing with and nurturing my kids and sharing my life and time with my wife.

THERE IS A WAR GOING ON! And we are oblivious to it.

Sure, we are aware and we see it on the news. But we are shielded from it. While we are enjoying the liberties of freedom, there are men and women actively fighting for it and safeguarding us. And they are doing it with the best attitude possible.

Some days I get to work and think, ?I have this to do today, I have that to do today, I have to make sure these parts come in and make sure that bike ships out on time. I have my stresses. I have to yada yadda yadda?.? You get the idea.

What a blessing it is that we have our daily burdens.

Most days I think WOW, I get to help someone design a bike today or we get to deliver a bike to customer today. I get to take my kids to the park or the Karting track or I get to have a date night with my wife. I am truly blessed. And while all this is going on, men & women are fighting and dying for our Country and others?.

SSgt Fairchild and other soldiers I have had correspondence with give me so much more than I give them. Sure I send them encouraging words, free T-shirts and posters and I will make sure his bike has something special about it that was unexpected. But really, that is nothing compared to what they are doing for us.

The truth is? we cannot do for them what they are doing for us. But we can do things to support our troops and show them we care. Anything helps. Believe me, when I was in Dessert Storm and I received a letter from someone, or a care package of snacks, or photos from home, it helped lift my spirits and get me through.

We can do the same for our soldiers today. We can let them know they are loved, respected, supported and missed.

These soldiers want to stay in touch with us. They want to be supported. I am grateful for the amazing number of emails I get from our troops, complimenting our bikes or just saying hi. I get an email from a soldier with a photo of he and his buddies. I get a flag in the mail in honor of Darwin Motorcycles from SSgt. Farichild. It puts things in perspective. They are the ones to be honored.

These soldiers are laying down their lives every day.

Speaking of that, I would like to introduce you to an amazing organization that we have partnered with who goes above and beyond to support severely wounded troops.

The Wounded Warrior Project The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is to raise public awareness and enlist the public?s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members to aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.

If you would like to get involved with them to help support our severely injured troops. Contact them at:

THE IRISH CELEBRATION–Paddy had been drinking at his local Dublin pub all day and most of the night celebrating St Patrick’s Day. Well it was his duty really; toasting his namesake.

Mick, the bartender says, ” You’ll not be drinking anymore tonight Paddy. Paddy replies, “OK Mick, I’ll be on my way then.”

Paddy spins around on his stool and steps off. He falls flat on His face. “Buggher” he says and pulls himself up by the stool and dusts himself off. He takes a step towards the door and falls flat on his face, “Shoite, Shoite!”

He looks to the doorway and thinks to himself that if he can just g et to the door and some fresh air he’ll be fine. He belly crawls tothe door and shimmies up to the door frame. He sticks his head outside and takes a deep breath of fresh air, feels much better and takes a step out onto the footpath and falls flat on his face.

“Be’jayz… I’m feckin’ shcuttered,” he says. He can see his house just a few doors down, and crawls to the door, hauls himself up the door frame, opens the door and shimmies inside.

He takes a look up the stairs and says “No bleedin’ way” He crawls up the stairs to his bedroom door and says “I can Make it to the bed.”

He takes a step into the room and falls flat on his face. He says “Ah phock it” and falls into bed.

The next morning, his wife, Molly, comes into the room carrying a cup of tea and says, “Morning Paddy”. Did you have a bit to drink lastnight?”.

Paddy says, “I did Moll. I was shaggin’ pissed. But how’d you know?”

“Mick phoned, . . You left your wheelchair at the pub.”

Bakerreverse

BAKER BUSINESS GOES IN REVERSE–BAKER Drivetrain has created the F6R reverse kit for 2007-2008 factory Cruise Drive six-speeds to meet the demands of an aging demographic of Harley riders. The F6R provides a reverse gear which is especially useful for riders of large touring bikes, side cars, trailer users and trikes who find it difficult to push a bike backwards.

Lehman Trikes adopted the technology for its Harley-Davidson three-wheel motorcycles and now, the F6R is exclusively distributed via Lehman Trikes and Baker Drivetrain.

Reverse is selected by moving the foot shift lever. Down shift into 1st gear, engage the electric safety switch near the handle bars and down shift again to select reverse. Up shift into 1st after completing the reverse maneuver to continue down the road.

Internally, the shift drum indexes to select reverse. The drum inherently functions as an interlock and makes it impossible to select reverse and another gear simultaneously.

The F6R is over-designed to make it durable under all conditions. Reverse gears and dogs are fully case hardened to HRC58-62 making the F6R as durable in reverse as it is in forward gears. Reverse gear ratio is 4.98:1. This compares to the 1st gear ratio of 3.34 making it 45 percent shorter than 1st gear.

The system is compatible with the Baker F6F which reduces 5th gear noise, and is available with cable type or hydraulic clutch actuator side cover. Baker offers an install service on the F6R on low mile six-speed gearsets sent to it for a nominal charge.

SPRING FLOOR RUN– As promised, this is your reminder that this Saturday is the annual Spring Flood Run. You’re all invited to stop by from 8:30-11:00 for FREE coffee and donuts. As usual this is NOT an organized ride, so you don’t have to feel obligated to ride with anyone – just come and go as you please!

We’re bustin’ our butts to make progress on the bike we’re building for the S&S Cycle 50th Anniversary Build-off www.sscycle50th.com and hope to have it at a point where you’ll have a good visual of what the finished bike will look like. Sadly I don’t think I’ll be able to go on the run myself as I need to devote as much time as possible to this build as well as a couple ‘other’ projects that need to be completed for the Anniversary celebration.

In case you’ve caught wind that we’ve finally gotten a shipment of new T-shirts in – IT’S TRUE!! We’re running a Flood Run Special of $16.00 per shirt (a buck-fifty more the the double X’s) from now thru the weekend, so get your’s now before they go up a few bucks!

BIKERS DREAM TV ANNOUNCES NEW V-TWIN MOTORCYCLE SERIES FOR TELEVISION– New TV Series Aims at the Do-It-Yourself Motorcycle Builder.

Ocean City, Md. April 15, 2008 Pinky Toe Productions, a full service production studio focusing on television, cable and internet entertainment, today announced the completion of its newest pilot show, Bike Dreams. Bike Dreams is a new show focusing on customizing V-Twin motorcycles. The show will take an average V-Twin rider and show them how to build a custom motorcycle from start to finish without the drama of other shows and without having to have a mechanics? background.

Motorcycles are everywhere nowadays and customizing them has entered into mainstream American homes, said Joe Pishtey, co-executive director of Bike Dreams. There have been many shows on TV with a similar focus but they are more drama entertainment. Bike Dreams will have an educational focus with a lot of fun.

Bike Dreams latest pilot is a new show for the regular person with a stock motorcycle and a dream to have a custom bike but doesn?t know where to begin or who doesn?t have the budget to have a professional build them a motorcycle. The hosts of the show, Joe and Bob, are regular guys with very little mechanical experience. All they have are some tools and a desire to turn a stock bike into a custom riding machine. The show will show the start and the finish and will show any errors or issues that the hosts encounter just like reality TV but without the drama.

“Bike Dreams will not only show the how-to?s but will also introduce new innovative products, services and builders to the public. These products will not be the everyday catalog products and will not only increase the awareness of these manufactures but will also help to make the finished bike a near-one-off custom.

Currently, Pinky Toe Productions is in negotiation with several big named television channels and encourages all interested parties to go to the Bike Dreams website and let their opinions be heard. The feedback on the pilot show has been so overwhelming that a web forum and photo galleries have been created to support and further educate the V-Twin audience. For more information or to get involved in future projects, contact Bike Dreams at http://www.bikedreamstv.com/www.bikedreamstv.com.

For more information or to watch the trailer for the pilot episode, check it out online at http://www.bikedreamstv.com/www.bikedreamstv.com or call the producers at 410-251-1190.

Thanks for your Support

Jerry,

Thanks so much for the boxes we recently received. The shirts look awesome. Everyone on our team was able to get a couple of shirts. Also, thanks for all the other goodies that were in the boxes.

You don’t know how much we appreciate your guys support. We just received the boxes because we have been moving all around in Iraq. We have been to Baghdad, Kirkuk and now are in Baji.

There are 11 of us that make up our Military Transition Team (MiTT 0462). We partner with the Iraqi Army and then train them on basic Soldiering tasks. It definitely tries our patience from time to time. However, these guys are eager to learn and defend their own country. They are willing to take the fight to the enemy even though they are not as well equipped as we are to do so.

Could you please pass this email on to any of the other supporters?

Take Care,

Thanks also for the plaque of appreciation Greg Rodd brought to my office this week for our participation in ABATE lobby day. What a great event, we had a force 500 strong. I am proud to be a member of MRF, ABATE of WI and A.B.A.T.E of IL.

BANDIT WRITES THE CANDIDATES–Mr. and Mrs. Clinton,

Here?s a challenging question. Is this country still based on freedom or is it based on safety and security. A retired army commander recently said to me, ?There is no safety clause in the Constitution.? That hit home. I?m an industry leader in the American aftermarket motorcycle industry. It?s about a two billion a year industry. We?re small potatoes, but we?re are predominately an American based manufacturing industry, rare in our society.

The California Air Resources Board had a meeting last week with some Motorcycle Industry representatives and asked, ?Why do we even have an aftermarket industry.? Obviously the industry was appalled. We need to back up in this country and make freedom a priority before freedom doesn?t exist.

I wish you all the best,
