BOOK OF THE WEEK FROM WOLFGANG STAFF,Advanced Custom Motorcycle Wiring #4-3056Author: Jeff Zielinski–The one job that even the best mechanics avoid is wiring. Those worries are now over with the introduction of Motorcycle Wiring from Wolfgang Publications. Part of the Custom Builder Series, this new book uses chapters one and two to cover the basics of DC electricity; as well as batteries, starters and alternators. The next chapter provides detailed schematics and repair information on the factory wiring harness used before and after 1994.

Jeff Zielinski, owner of Namz Custom Cycle Products and designer of all their wiring harness kits, is the author of Motorcycle Wiring. In the custom bike industry, Jeff is the go-to guy for neat and functional wiring harnesses and the components needed to make a harness work in a unique situation.

Jeff uses over half the book to describe the various harness options available to a person building a custom bike. Is it better to build a harness from scratch or install a ready-made harness kit? And which kit is best for a particular situation? What?s the easiest way to install the harness and route all those wires inside the top tube and the handle bars? These questions and many more are answered in this new Motorcycle Wiring book.

This entirely new Wiring book uses 144 pages and over 300 color photos and diagrams to illustrate all the latest products, the basic circuits, simple and complex wiring schematics, and a complete start-to-finish custom wiring installation.

Available from Wolfgang Publications, order by mail at PO Box 223, Stillwater, MN. By phone at 651-275-0194, or on the web at www.wolfpub.com, priced at $27.95 + $5.50 S&H.

Well folks, the numbers are in and they are overwhelming, new attendance records were set at the Original Broke Spoke Saloon on Lazelle Street and the extended version, The Broken Spoke Campground on the County Line.

The maiden Broken Spoke Saloon housed a display of the Next Generation and Beyond Builders Motorcycles and the spectators received one on one time with Brian Elliott of Black Sunshine Customs featured his Goldy Locks motorcycle that is featured in the September issue of Cycle Source, Rod Davis of Stripped Down Cycles and his bike that took the trophy at a recent Horse Magazine Chop-off contest and Scott Williams of Williams Originals, whose Lil Sling Shot build won a recent Limpnickie Lot award during the Easyrider Bike Show Tour. From all accounts, the Broken Spoke Campground on the County Line became it?s own little town. Partygoers and campers could experience the Biggest Drive- In Biker Bar, the Limpnickie Lot, The Good Ol? Days Racetrack, Vendors Village and The American Motor Dome. This year was very special as the Moving Wall was on site for the spectators to experience. ?I truly believe it brought The Broken Spoke great karma,? stated Jay. ? It?s known as the Biggest Biker Pool and you could get a cold one served to you by the hottest bikini clad Spoke Girls.?

The week was filled with great times, two of them being the Sugarbear and Michael Litcher Ride and the opening of the Legends Gallery. Well over 300 people attended the ride that ended at an amazing 30,000-acre ranch where everybody, including Sugarbear, handled the ropes to barrel racing with their own scoots. The night was capped off by the amazing standing room only opening of the Legends Gallery, which contained some Famous Motorcycles, the awesome photography from Colleen Swartz and Speed King?s Jeff Cochran. You could also lay your eyes on some jaw-dropping paintings from the master artists David Uhl and John Guillemette.

The weeklong rally had endless events and concerts that kept the party going and a special pool party was given to the first 500 campers that booked thru the website. There are already plans being laid out for more action in 2010, watch for upcoming details. For more details, go to www.brokenspokesaloon.com

NEW LOW BUCK PROJECT FROM STREET WALKER– Attached are a few pics of a low budget bike I’m building myself. I’ve had the stock bike sitting around for years, cool motor, always liked 750 Honda motors, the rest of the stock bike just didn’t get it. There are no cool parts sitting around for these, so I had to make just about everything, frame, front end, tank, bars, forwards, exhaust, you name it.

terry 2

I’ve seen some pretty cool 750 ‘s done over the years but most of them just don’t have the “right” look. I’m hoping this one does and I ‘m just finishing up the fab on the last few brackets and tabs and I’m ready to tear it down for paint. Money has been tight this year and there hasn’t been enough to go around and still build what I’d really like to build. I did the next best thing and took what I had and went with it. I think it will look pretty good when it’s all done.

terry 3

I thought is was coming along pretty cool while I was building it but since it wasn’t an American V-Twin I guess I assumed that it wouldn’t get a second look from a lot of guys and I figured I’d better get used to rice jokes because it would probably would draw its share.

terry 4

When you’re building something like this from the ground up and it’s coming along the way you’d envisioned it it’s only second nature to start feel pretty jazzed about the project. I had to remind myself countless times during fabrication that as much as I liked the bike, because of its pedigree a lot of people might not. It really presented a different set of challenges over a traditional V-Twin build and maybe because everything had to fabbed from scratch and it was really different from what I’ve gotten used to, it was refreshing and I had a fun building it.

terry 5

I’m looking forward to riding it, the bike is so light to move around the shop, it feels like one of my dirt bikes. I’m leaving the motor stock for now until I ride it for awhile to see if it’s got enough juice or if it needs some more. When I paint it I think I’m going to paint the name on the side of the tank in spun silver leaf, I’m gonna call it Hon-dah Davie-San.

–Terry

The Bikernet staff assigned Wacko, the Bikernet Metric Editor, to produce a build tech on Terry’s project, and ultimately a bike feature. Hang on.–Wrench

GRANNYRIDES

A birthday wish grantedFormer Army Motorcycle Traffic Officer Dawne Fogg, 84, Gets Motorcycle Ride– Just wanted to share this very cool news event that happened this past weekend, in Tulare, California.

This one is a little personal to me…since “Foggie” is actually the AUNT of my girlfriend, Wild Child! (You can see Wild Child in the 3rd picture down, standing on the right, helping get Foggie up onto the motorcycle seat.)

Foggie lived an INCREDIBLE life, one of the first women motorcycle riders in the Army, served in Korea and Vietnam, 500 parachute jumps, a motorcycle officer in post-war Japan, a former Motor Maid that rode with Dot Robinson, racing in Daytona in the 50’s, fighting the Japanese Judo champ, and a BMW test rider logging big miles in her “spare time”….all documented in her journals and photos.

She wanted “one last ride”…well…I hope it’s not her last…because I’d like to see her cruise downtown Sturgis on the back of MY bike, though she’s more than qualified to be riding ME around – if only her body was as nimble as her mind. We’re gonna try our darnedest to get her into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s Hall of Fame – while she’s still young enough to enjoy the honor! This woman should serve as a true inspiration to ALL of us.

Motorcyclists’ Protection Guardrails: FEMA launches European call for testimonies–Faced with delays in the adoption of a new testing standard for road restraint systems, FEMA supports CEN?s work by launching a pan-European call for testimonies gathering personal stories and reports of motorcyclists injured in crash barrier collisions.

During its last meeting in June, CEN?s technical committee on road equipment postponed the adoption of a new draft standard for road restraint systems, which could provide additional protection for motorcyclists. Members of the European standards agency technical committee TC226 are still discussing the details of the draft, which is based on the existing Spanish standard.

FEMA has been campaigning for safer road restraint systems for the last 20 years, and expects the new standard to be adopted before next summer. Since 2007, FEMA has been granted liaison status with CEN, which is officially recognised as the European standards organisation by the European Union.

Most road restrain systems consist of a simple metal rail, and while this design offers acceptable energy absorption properties for four-wheeled vehicle crashes, exposed support beams at ground level can cause major and lethal injuries to motorcyclists falling and sliding on the road.

Unfortunately, police and emergency services records across Europe rarely give accurate data on guardrails-related casualties: detailed information is missing as cases are rarely identified and reported as such. Faced with this situation, it is essential to gather as much information as possible to get an accurate view of typical accident configurations, in order to elaborate a safe and adapted test standard for future barriers.

In order to show its commitment to support CEN?s work, FEMA has decided to launch a wide European campaign, gathering individual testimonies from riders and relatives describing injuries suffered while hitting guardrails. It consists of a 21-question survey open to all, available online in English, Spanish, German, Italian and French. Participants are invited to give as much detail as possible about the accident they are reporting, in order to allow the creation of a comprehensive database of user cases. The survey is available on FEMA?s website at http://www.fema-online.eu/index.php?page=guardrails.

? Have you personally experienced a motorcycle accident involving a crash barrier?
? Can you provide a personal testimony on an accident where a motorcyclist collided with a crash barrier?

Then you can help FEMA assess the risk crash barriers represent for all riders in Europe. By filling in this questionnaire, you are bringing us important data on accident cases.

FEMA hopes the testimonies gathered through this survey will prove useful to CEN in its efforts to make roads safer for all categories of users. The next CEN TC266 sub committee (TG1) meeting is expected to take place sometime in September. Adoption of the draft standard at this stage would open the way to full implementation, hopefully by early 2010.

Metzler

7th Annual Sturgis Metzeler Custom Bike Contest– You should have been there! The 7th Annual Sturgis Metzeler Custom Bike Contest has become more than an annual affair for Metzeler, it is a yearly must-do for many of America?s best and wildest builders. There?s no better measure of its success than the number of custom builders who have eagerly taken part in every Annual Sturgis Metzeler Custom Bike Contest, each with custom builds rolling on Metzeler tires.

This year?s show took place at ?The Legendary Buffalo Chip?, sharing the site with Michael Lichter?s Exhibit ?Rebel Rousers?. It is the only show judged by Custom Bike Association certified judges, assuring all of the contestants the highest possible level of professionalism. This year?s judges included Eddie Trotta of Thunder Cycles, American Iron Editor Chris Maida, Bob Cashwell of Drag Specialties, Paul Cox of Cox Industries, and Athena Ransom from Vagabond Choppers. A special thanks goes out to all of these judges for their fantastic dedication.

Due to its history, this year?s show had the largest number pre-registration entries in the contest?s history. And each year the judging is more and more difficult because the level of craft, artistry and engineering in the builds just keeps getting better and better. Tradition has shown, the bikes entered in the Annual Metzeler Custom Bike show are the bikes that set the trends. The Best of Show winner from Todd’s Cycle was an outrageous Unlimited Custom complete with a 21″ rear Metzeler ME880. Todd’s Cycle is the first repeat winner in the history of the contest. Pushing the limits of custom bikes, the People?s Choice Award winner was Russ Deuker of Full Tilt Customs, with a bike sporting two rear wheels.

Best of Show winner, Todd Silicato of Todd?s Cycle, earned himself an unbelievable booty of: inclusion in the 2010 Metzeler Ad Campaign, 3 day apprenticeship with Eddie Trotta, a feature article in American Iron Magazine, a trip to Sturgis 2010 , a seat at the Annual Round table at the Cincinnati V-Twin Expo, 4 sets of Metzeler Tires, a trophy (don?t forget the trophy), a $500 gift certificate towards a Baker Transmission or Builder?s Kit, a certificate for an All Balls Starter, a certificate for an Boyesen Power X Wing, a certificate for an Danny Gray Seat, and a certificate for a Kicker Audio set including 5.25 Coaxial Speakers & ear buds.

MET

The winners in each class this year at the 7th Annual Metzeler Custom Bike Contest were: People?s Choice, Russ Deuker of Full Tilt Customs; Custom Class, Ron Finch of Finch?s Customs; Chopper Class, Larry Moore, Moore?s Customs; Bobber Class, Mark Shadley, Shadley Bros; Consumer Class, Kirk Kaprenstein from Concord, California; Stage 3 Class, Darren Knoll from Maxwell, Iowa; Production Class, Mark Dirico of Dirico Motorcycles. A congratulations goes to all of these winners and a deeply appreciated thank you goes to every contestant who proudly took part in the event.

In concert with the show, once again the Metzeler semi was located on Lazelle Street. With the help of local dealer Sturgis Yamaha, BMW, it provided service to the growing loyal following of Metzeler ME880 customers. Metzeler gives a hearty thanks to the sponsors that donated prizes for our contest: Baker Drivetrain, All Balls, Boyesen, Danny Gray, and Kicker Audio. We look forward to seeing all of you next year.

For more than 100 years, Metzeler has met the rider?s toughest demands with unflagging innovation, setting the trends that others follow. Whether one is drawn to the longevity of its classic design or its uncompromising performance, Metzeler is chosen by more riders and builders than any other tire on the road, making it a true icon in the world of upgrade tires. Mongolspatch

GOVERNMENT LOSES MONGOLS MC CASE–The Mongols Motorcycle Club has won the fight over the seizure of its trademarks. United States Attorney Thomas P. O?Brien has lost his case. The club continues to own its name and its patch and has a constitutionally protected right to continue to exist.

Last October 21st, a brash press release announced the unsealing of a ?racketeering indictment that (charged) 79 defendants? associated with ?the violent Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang.? The headline grabbing news in the release was that ?The racketeering indictment seeks the forfeiture of the trademarked ?Mongols? name, which is part of the ?patch? members wear on their motorcycle jackets.?

?In addition to pursuing the criminal charges set forth in the indictment, for the first time ever, we are seeking to forfeit the intellectual property of a gang,? O?Brien bragged. ?The name ?Mongols,? which is part of the gang?s ?patch? that members wear on their motorcycle jackets, was trademarked by the gang. The indictment alleges that this trademark is subject to forfeiture. We have filed papers seeking a court order that will prevent gang members from using or displaying the name ?Mongols.? If the court grants our request for this order, then if any law enforcement officer sees a Mongol wearing his patch, he will be authorized to stop that gang member and literally take the jacket right off his back.?

Bad Cops

Pulling the Mongols patch was unequivocally the principal point of the indictment. The indictment culminated a three year-long domestic spying operation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives called ?Operation Black Rain.? As of this writing, at least 25 former members of the Mongols Motorcycle Club have pled guilty to Count One of the indictment. That count alleges that the Club is a murdering, drug dealing criminal enterprise. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the government coerced those defendants into making those racketeering pleas in order to build its case against the club as a whole.

Among the confessed criminal conspirators was former club President Ruben ?Doc? Cavazos who claimed ownership of the club?s trademarks and attempted to forfeit them to the government as part of his plea deal.

For at least six weeks, unrestrained and gloating ATF storm troopers and other police officials have been harassing American citizens simply because they are or may be or may have at one time been Mongols. Government agents have been invading people?s homes and breaking into their cars in order to steal their personal property.

In two rulings, on July 31st and August 6th, Federal District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper has now put a stop to this.

Leadgirl

Hey,

Another interesting week in Paradise. This weekend the good Dr. Hamster and I are riding into the desert to perform a tech on his 200,000 mile ’89 Evo dresser. This tech will contain some interesting aspects and a couple of simple ones.

We’re riding over to Bennett’s Performance in Long Beach tomorrow to dyno the old dresser. Then when we ride out Saturday morning, we’ll top off and check his mileage to the Marengo Caverns and the Chop N Grind Performance Center.

We are going to switch out his duals exhaust system from a D&D 2-into-1 performance system. We’ll change the air cleaner to a high-flow K&N and then switch out his entire ignition system for a new Compu-Fire Single Fire system. Usually single fire entails dual coils, new mounts some wiring adjustment. Not so this time. This is a clean, single coil system. We’ll bring you all the results, Yucca Valley Girls and how many real palms reside in 29 Palms, California (call Chop N Grind if you need service work in that area, (760) 910-5010). Let’s hit the news:

MRFrelease

REGISTER NOW FOR MEETING OF THE MINDS!–The pre-registration deadline for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation?s (MRF) 25th Anniversary Meeting of the Minds (MOTM) conference is quickly approaching. The MOTM conference this year will take place in Bloomington, MN from September 24-27. You can save $10 by registering for MOTM prior to the August 24 pre-registration deadline. The pre-registration price for MRF members is only $70.00, and it is $80.00 for non-MRF members.

After August 24, the price will increase to $80.00 and $90.00 respectively. To register, simply go to the MRF website (www.mrf.org) and click on Conference Info, then register for Meeting of the Minds 2009. If you prefer, you can mail a check to the DC office. A mail-in registration form can be downloaded from the MRF website.

The MOTM will be held at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel, Minneapolis South. Our group room rate is only $89.00 for single and double rooms. They also are offering special rates for our group in their Cabana, Deluxe and Club rooms. Reservations must be made no later than August 24 to take advantage of the group rate. This is a really good deal, as regular room rates start at $149.00. Hotel information can also be found in the Conference Info area of the MRF website.

There is some conflicting information about the airport shuttle service. Even an upcoming article in THE MRF REPORTS unfortunately has misinformation. The discontinuation of the hotel shuttle service is what has led to the confusion. However, there will be hotel shuttle service Thursday-Sunday, including limited service to and from the Mall of America. The Conference Info section of the MRF website has the correct information.

While you are on the website, please take a look at the agenda for the conference, as there are many new workshops being offered this year. For instance, our panel discussion on Saturday morning, regarding political activism, will have panelists that include not only motorcyclists? rights activists, but also politicians who may or may not support all of our issues. It should be a lively discussion on exactly how the political process works from the perspective of our elected officials.

Because this is the 25th Meeting of the Minds, we expect to see lots of people who have been involved in our movement through the MRF for many years. A wealth of knowledge and history will be present at this year?s MOTM; we hope you will be too.

Krawiec scored a first-round win over Nitrofish.com Buell rider Matt Smith, who is third in points. In round two, Krawiec defeated MPR/Damn Sports Suzuki rider Michael Phillips. Krawiec lost in round three to top-qualifier Hector Arana. Arana got a win in the final when Pippin fouled at the starting line.

?Our focus is to maintain our momentum, go rounds, and do well at Indy,? said Krawiec, the defending Pro Stock Motorcycle champion. ?A run to the semi-final round today caps another great weekend for the Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team.?

Hines lost at the starting line, with a 0.073 reaction time and 7.034 run to the 0.027 start and 7.056 run of Pippin.

?I was shooting for about 0.050 on the tree,? said Hines. ?He got that start on me and beat me to 60 feet, and then I just ran out of track before I could catch him. The good news is that my teammate beat Matt Smith in round one and kept him from catching me for second place in points.?

After the Brainerd event, six Pro Stock Motorcycle riders have qualified for the 2009 Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship. Hines and Krawiec are joined by Arana, Smith, Horne Racing Buell rider Doug Horne, and Team Scream Suzuki rider Craig Treble. Only the top 10 points earners in the class will take part in the Countdown playoffs, which begin at the North Carolina Nationals on Sept. 17-20.

After 10 events on the 17-race 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule, Krawiec leads the series with 911 points. Hines is second with 803, followed by Smith with 668. Arana moves up to fourth with 644 points, followed by Treble with 641 and Horne with 632.

The next event on the 2009 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule is the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals, Aug. 20-23 at Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, Pa.

The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Pro Stock Motorcycle team is sponsored by Matco Tools, Dunlop and S100.

NEWS FROM CHOP N GRIND PERFORMANCE CENTER–Chop N Grind Black Magic Night Fighter Mock up….Last week Chop N Grind started the mock-up of Robert Jr`s 1999 X1 Buell lighting “Chop N Grind crew member”. It all stared with a $500 used Buell. In Chop N Grind fashion bought the bike from local Drunk who forgot he had the bike sitting in a corner of his garage of buried parts and tools.

We put a battery in her and, “Bam,” she came to life. The Buell is just in the mock up stage, we need to invade the Bikernet headquarters for more parts. BROTHERS CAN’T CATCH A BREAK– This was sent to me by a retired friend in law enforcement.

Few days ago at 11pm at the largest intersection in ID, some gypsy jokers, & Jackals out of Oregon were heading back. A few Brother Speed were with them also. The traffic cam caught one blocking traffic so they can all go as a group.

They called in the gang task force, state, nampa & sheriffs & at an exit ramp a few miles west in Nampa, pulled them all over. Searched all & busted 1. Then wrote the tix. Talk about harassment.

Jeff Decker Fights for His Art

The sculpture in question

Well there, what the hell is going on here? I mean in this country of ours, the good ole USA. I have been bombarded by stupid national and world news for so long that I thought it impossible to get this fired up any more. That's not to say I've been happy as a meadow lark, just been at a slow simmer about how our legal system has turned into such a large portion of our Gross National Product. Every day people encounter new rules, regulations and the ever growing fear of situations that require legal counsel just in order to work at their craft, trade, or profession. They now need to add in legal fees as a standard every day business practice. A lot of these matters use to be based on trust and a hand shake. A lot of people reading this will remember those days. And a lot of people also know this type of practice is pretty well gone along with the wild mustang.

Decker with one of his masterpieces during an unveiling.

I moved to Utah from California almost twenty five years ago just to get away from this sort of mentality. It's been a great run, but it looks like the “lawyer up” mentality has crept into my “happy place”. On Saturday January 2nd, KSL channel 5 in Salt Lake City reported (www.ksl.com) aired a story how someone had stolen a four ton bronze sculpture from the front of Timpanogos Harley-Davidson in Lindon, Ut. Well, I knew right off the bat they could only be talking about Jeff Decker’s work “Land Speed” reflecting Joe Petrali in his historic run. I know this piece from photographing it for a book, as well as seeing it at the dealer ship.

WIllie G and Decker
That’s Willie G. and his wife Nancy with Jeff during construction.

Just to give you little history and background, I had the good fortune to go on a tour of the building during it's construction phase with Willie G. and Nancy Davidson, Cole Foster (Salinas Boyz), Brett Moonie, metal chaser to the stars, and Decker himself. Dave Tuomisto was maestro and led us thru the still skeletal beginning of this amazing building. We all saw that day how much heart and soul Dave T. was putting into the building; plus he was sparing no expense to really put this location on the map. Not just for himself and H-D, but for his father and all of the rest of the people who used to work close by at the now extinct Geneva Steel Mill. In fact, right next to the same location as the Geneva Mill. Tuomisto and Decker; two people working to re-kindle the past and help give respect and honor to the many great people before them.

Now it's also important to understand that Jeff Decker grew up in So-Cal with parents who thought racing was basically the thing to do on Sunday rather then go to church. Decker also spent a time going to various flea markets and collecting all types of racing memorabilia through the years. This helped him to developing a keen interest in motorcycle history. He learned what he could about sculpting using the Lost Wax method while attending university in Utah. Meeting Stan Wanlass was another big step, and I have heard Jeff mention that Stan has been a true mentor to him.

Over the years Jeff has been honest to his craft and made many friends all along the way: all around the world. He is well respected mostly because he is a man of his word. Just in case you are new to the world of motorcycles and need proof, just ask.any on this short list of people that know or once knew Jeff, and consider him a friend: Jessie James, Jason Jessie, Sonny Barger, Willie “G” and Nancy Davidson, Cole Foster, Stan Wanlass, Mondo, Indian Larry (RIP), Bruce Rossmeyer (RIP), Lonnie Isum, David Uhl, and more people in Japan and Europe than I can list right now.

When Dave Tuomisto was trying to get his dream built, he started to run into typical set backs and like everyone else he did what he could. Then it was time to move into the building and get the business up and running. From my experience everyone did their best to make the dealership shine. Then something came along that I was confident Dave would get handled. There was trouble getting the construction loan switched over to a conventional loan. Plus I do believe a payment was coming due to H-D so Dave needed to find a partner to go in with him. Well he did, and before you know it, Dave is signing the business over to the a new owner (partner). If I'm not mistaken, the new owner took over for around $500,000.00. Tuomisto lost everything (million) and was forced into bankruptcy. Was the take over due to legal tactics that pushed Dave Tuomisto into a corner? I don't know, but maybe the new owner could shed some light on this. With friends like this…

But wait there is more. While doing some photography at Hippodrome Studio (Decker) a few days back, I stumbled across some papers on a small table while taking a break in the living room. It was between Dave Tuomisto (Tupelo LLC,Dba Timpanogos H-D) and Jeff Decker (Hippodrome Studio).

The main point on this document for the purpose of this story is, that Decker may remove the sculpture and stone base without notice, but not during business hours.

So is the new owner, who happens to be an owner of Nu Skin, using what he considers standard business tactics by coming after Jeff Decker before trying to get things cleared up on a more human level? I hope not. A big Harley-Davidson dealership needs lots of happy people in order to just keep its doors open. Maybe even rely on out of state riders to make a profit. In my mind he already has two wheels in the ditch.

Mr. Openshaw maybe it's time to man up. The motorcycle community world wide is watching.

Stay tuned to find out the results of this fiasco. Maybe someone should reign with an iron fist and justice will prevail.

2009 David Mann Chopperfest in Ventura

davemannriding

I consulted the all-too-frequently-crossed-out-squares on my soon-to-be-history 2009 Hunky Dudes on Hot Bikecalendar (I can dream can’t I?). It told me that the David Mann Chopper Fest, held every December for the past five years in Ventura, CA, was coming up in a few days and I had my trusty Harley-Davidson Heritage already packed up and roaring to go. Then the worst storm of the season pounded its way up and down the California coast. Shit, shit and double shit.

DMKP
Long time boss of In The Wind Magazine, Kim Peterson. He's the guy who cares for every reader photo submitted.

DMguy

From the relative dry and warm safety of my NorCal garage, I stared out at the bleak weather conditions. The thought of riding six hours south in cold, crappy, wet weather – with even the promise of snow in the mountain passes leading to the northwest edge of Los Angeles County – already had me questioning my sanity and rethinking my travel plans when the phone rang. Snatching it off its cradle, I heard my buddy Ray C. Wheeler’s voice on the other end.

DMchica

“Ya packed up for Ventura?” Ray spat, knowing full well that the annual Chopper Fest, held in memory of the famous biker graphic artist, David Mann, is one oceanside gig I truly enjoy. He already knew my answer: hell yeah! After all, Chopper Fest is a unique blend of bike show, swap meet, music fest, and celebration of the iconic biker centric artwork of Mann. It simply was not to be missed unless, as geologic experts keep telling us, the California coastline falls into the Pacific Ocean, and maybe not even then.

DMart

DMtank

What my pal didn’t know my travel plans. After carefully scoping the horizon for the lumbering ark I was sure would crest the hills at any minute, I’d decided to leave my bike on the jiffy stand and make the trek on four wheels. I was sure Mann, looking down on Chopper Fest from biker heaven, would understand.

Mann and machines

Shame on anyone sitting around scratching their head and wondering, “Who the hell was David Mann?” Those folks should find an older brother's garage and dig around. They are sure to find and thumb through and old issue of Easyriders magazine. One aspect of that historic rag would jump, the centerspread art by David Mann. Fact is, you could write a book about Mann, his graphics depicting the motorcycle culture is often-mythic imagery, and the resulting influence of his work on the art movement known as Low Brow. Maybe somebody already has, I dunno.

DMkid

DMChrome

Right now, what follows is a thumbnail version of Mann’s artistic biography. Coming of age in Kansas City, MO, in the early 1960s, Mann dug hot cars and cool bikes and he drew what he liked. Affiliated with the El Forastero MC (which is either legendary or notorious or both, depending on who you believe), his early drawings depicting the authentically wild doings of the club caught the eye of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, the Kalifornia Kustom Kulture hot rod car and bike builder.

DMshow

DMshow2

While Roth’s motorcycle chopper magazine carried some of David’s work, most folks didn’t pay a whole lot of attention until Mann’s drawings became a regular feature in Easyriders magazine during the early 1970s. His characters and their bikes seem to suck the viewer into the action of the scene. Each creation swept viewer off into a lifestyle Dave so deftly translated into paint. Centerfold became collectibles tacked to every biker garage in the world. The rest, as they say, is biker art history. Mann’s work continued to appear in the magazine until 2003 when illness forced him to stop. In 2004, Mann was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame and passed away in September of that same year.

DMpush

Over the years, centerfold full-color Mann drawings like in “Ghost Rider” depicted, among other things, a very sanitary style of handcrafted bike that literally came to define in many minds what a chopper should be. Quite naturally, the Dave Mann Chopper Fest continues that tradition while embracing cool bikes in general.

Starwhat?

The Chopper Fest is held at the Ventura Fairgrounds along the gentle surf of the Pacific Ocean and is always a beautiful, palm tree swaying in the breeze, kind of SoCal scene that seems to warm the heart as well as bones. Part of the charm, no doubt, extends from the locale’s long and laidback history. Oil and oranges – Sunkist started here — both figure in the area’s economic history. This very venue is where David Mann had married his lovely wife, Jacquie; in a typical SoCal style that included a few friends and whoever was wandering through the swap meet at the time.

Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782, still anchors Ventura’s historic downtown neighborhood. At night, the fountain near the mission grounds is lit and visitors stroll between the many trendy restaurants that exist along several blocks. But so too do some homeless who pitch their tents in shadows or push shopping carts towards the refuge of nearby Plaza Park. In honor of the holiday season, several of those folks were huddled up in storefront alcoves, harmonizing Christmas carols and keeping warm.

But on Sunday morning down at the fairgrounds, the weather had cleared, a badass swap meet, plenty of vendors, and a bike show that would smack you right in the head kicked-off the day. Custom, chromed, wrenched, and rattle-canned bikes of all makes and design rolled out to gleam in the bright sunshine next to vintage and meticulously restored machines, as well as all manner of motorcycle in between. Out in the ocean, surfers were gliding along the crest of the cool winter tide, with no ark in sight.

davemannriding2

DMWeasels

The spirit of the amazing artist, who so skillfully committed the biker life style to canvass seemed to wander among the attendees, perfectly at home and absolutely detectable. The laid back vibe was everywhere. Mann’s art displayed prominently through out the venue, where it’s a sort of cult gathering that’s casual and comfortable. The parking lot out front, was a blur of bikes as riders rolled in and out, during the one-day event. Artists are encouraged to express themselves in a variety of ways, but most appreciated were the array of custom and classic motorcycles displayed across the sod.

Davidmannstreetguys

DMdetai

The Star Fuckers, who cleaned up the band name, due to the children who are welcome to attend, became “Star Truckers” for the day, and provided killer entertainment for this sixth iteration of the Chopper Fest. A power trio that included guitarist Gilby Clarke (late of Guns n’ Roses), bass player Stephen Adika (Glamnation), and drummer Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats) banged out great tunes. Between sets, the personable hostess Jennifer Scott Santolucito kept the day on schedule, bantered with the crowd, and distributed freebie items by tossing them from the stage. Among the freebies were photographs of her in her panties. As a newly married woman, the beautiful master of ceremonies hoped to be rid of the cheesecake shots that featured her colorful, uh… tattoos.

In the end, it was all about the bikes and, of course, paying respects to the never-to-be-forgotten, artistic icon, David Mann.

GM to Start Selling Cars on eBay: Now, the Auto Industry Should Reinvent the Dealership! — I applaud GM’s move to start selling cars on eBay[1], but it doesn’t go far enough; let’s reinvent new car dealerships from scratch, turning them into experience and servicing centers. Move ALL new car transactions to the Web (potentially in a kiosk area at the experience center), and take the high-pressure “salesman” out of the negotiating loop. In one fell swoop, the auto industry could:

Take the anxiety out of price negotiations.

ABC news [2] reported that for many female shoppers, buying a car can be a terrifying experience. Dr. Ian Ayres (Yale Law School), et. al. has reported (1995) [3] that females, blacks, and certain other demographic groups pay higher prices at dealers. Let’s eliminate discrimination, profiling, and anxiety by making pricing totally transparent and fair to all demographics groups.

Put the fun and excitement back into shopping for a car.

Change the shopping process and the path to purchase. Let’s change dealerships into experience or welcome centers built to deliver learning, fun, and involvement. Make a visit to a dealer…oops “welcome center”… an early (and repeated) step rather than the last step in the process. Let’s turn the purchase funnel on its ear by making these places into forces of attraction rather than high-pressure selling environments.

Create a sense of belonging that extends past the purchase.

You might buy a car once every “x” years but you drive it regularly and probably it reflects your personality. Give people who might salute each other on the road a place to hang out and feel a sense of belonging.

I believe this can reinvigorate people’s love affair with autos (and sales will follow) based on what I know about shopper experience:

CarsonEbayguy

Imagine if Ron Johnson who created the Apple store concept was asked to reinvent the auto experience. He might create a programmed theme park experience, starting with a video, a learning center, and then a test drive. He might make pricing totally TRANSPARENT via a Web-based kiosk center that accesses a company-sponsored tool or eBay. You could come there anytime, not only when you “admit” you are moving through the purchase funnel (ugh, I hate that term).

Let’s turn the economic crisis into an advantage. Let’s reinvigorate an industry by putting the fun not just into driving, but into shopping for a car!

DUST TO GLORY AND THE BAJA 1000 ADICTION–Chuck Shortt fired up “Dust to Glory” on DVD and ended up watching it five times in the course of one night. Within a week he was putting together a team to compete in the Baja 1000, the subject of the movie. This is how obsession is born.

The Baja 1000 is reportedly the longest non-stop point-to-point race in the world. It is held each autumn in Mexico, on the Baja Peninsula, and features around 1,000 teams racing motorcycles, trucks, old-style Volkswagens, custom-built open-class vehicles, and more. All race on the same course at the same time. Locals and regular traffic also share the roads. This is no closed-course event.

Baja1000

The race always starts at Ensenada and for two years the course will run down to La Paz, in the south of the Baja. Then, the next two years, the course will be a loop that ends back in Ensenada. The race in 2009, set for Nov. 19-22, is the second year for the loop. The course will head east from Ensenada to the east coast of the Baja, back to the west coast, and then return to Ensenada, crossing two mountain ranges in the process. Some of the roads are no more than goat trails.

Chuck Shortt will be riding that loop this year.Chuck’s team, Rsenal Racing, will consist of himself and two other riders, Jim Kuykendall and Dale Branson. Nine other team members will provide support in the endeavor.

Chuck’s experience as a racer goes back to when he was 19, when he started doing motocross. In the 1980s he road-raced on a Kawasaki Ninja 600 but then he was badly injured in a crash in 1999. After a couple years healing, he bought another bike and dove right back in.

The Rsenal Racing team is shooting to finish in the top 10 percent in their class. In future articles we’ll be following the team as they prepare and ultimately put their months of work and planning to the test in the Baja. Stay tuned.

UNDERCOVER BIKERNET BADLANDS REPORTER–It has come to my attention from reliable sources that it is not cool to stop and smoke pot when riding in Spearfish Canyon. There is also a difference in the fine from a forest ranger and the cop so if you are going to get busted for smoking run to the forest ranger and save money.

Do not park your bikes, walk down to the creek and smoke pot in Spearfish Canyon. They have spotters sitting out in the woods. They have binoculars. When they see somebody smoking weed, they call on their radios and tell law enforcement, who then swoop in and arrest them. It costs them $463, and a lot of them spend the night in jail, I think depending upon what time of the day or night they are caught.

And a lot of times this leads to a felony drug charge, because a lot of these people have other drugs on them, and catching them with pot gives them probable cause to search. This is probably the only reason they would waste their time with pot: They all want to get a big drug bust, ya know. Assholes! 🙂

Brad Pitt adds One More To His Collection–

Brad Pitt, star of the Quentin Tarantino film Inglorious Bastards has added another bike to his growing stable of custom machines. Magnum Chrome, built by Terrell Texas bike builder Alan Lee. Custom cycle fans will remember Lee as the builder who wears blood red glasses and chiseled out the first ever ?glass? bike for World Bike Build Off.

Alanlee

The selling price of the bike was not disclosed, but estimates put it well over $100,000, but most believe Pitt didn?t need special financing to cover the check he wrote. The movie star admitted he really doesn?t know how many motorcycle he owns but part of the reason he loves to ride is the anonymity it gives him.

Yahama Takes Hard Hit–Yamaha Motor Co., the world?s second- largest motorcycle maker, posted it?s worse loss in nine months after the company quadrupled its forecast to a full-year loss of $1.9 billion dollars.

In August, the company dropped almost 10 percent on the Tokoyo Stock Exchange. Yamaha, based in Iwata City, Japan, had previously forecast a net loss of four million dollars. It posted a loss of roughly 78 million dollars in the first half of the year. The motorcycle maker cut its sales forecast by 12 percent as rising unemployment and falling wages reduces demand for Royal Star cruising bikes. Yamaha plans to close three factories in Japan over the next three years. The company cut its forecast for motorcycle sales in North America this year by 35 percent and lowered its prediction for European sales by 8 percent.

?Consumers are fearful and not spending on motorcycles in the U.S. and Europe,? said Yuuki Sakurai, chief executive officer of Fukoku Capital Management Inc. in Tokyo. ?Even if the economy recovers, it won?t be as same level as two years ago.?

Yamaha Motor gets about 41 percent of sales from Europe and North America. A stronger yen will further reduce operating profit the company said.

BIKERNET MEDICAL UNIVERSITY DISCOVERS FOUR HEALTHY DRINKS–SORRY NO WHISKEY–Last week we discussed four unhealthy drinks that you should minimize or avoid. Today we cover four healthy beverages – experiment to find the best ways to incorporate them into your daily routine:

Green tea. My beverage of choice, green tea is a potent source of catechins – healthy antioxidants which can inhibit cancer cell activity and help boost immunity. Replace your morning coffee with a cup of tea for a healthier wake-up.

Cranberry juice. Cranberries are a rich source of vitamin C and contain a substance that hinders the attachment of bacteria to bladder walls, which can help prevent urinary tract infections. Instead of cranberry juice cocktail, opt for unsweetened cranberry juice concentrate and dilute with water or sparkling water.

Red wine. The antioxidant activity of red wine has been linked to heart health benefits, reduced stress, and even preserving memory. If you enjoy an occasional drink, limit your intake to 1-2 glasses a day. If you don’t drink, don’t start – there are other ways to get antioxidants in your diet, including fresh, whole fruits and vegetables.

Pure, filtered water. Staying well hydrated is essential to optimal health and overall functioning. Drink as much as you want throughout the day, and in the warmer months, be sure to drink water when exercising to avoid dehydration.

KENTUCKY SAVE THE BIKER, YARD SIGN CAMPAIGN–Just wanted to give an update on the yard sign campaign. As of right now the KMA is out of the 1700 signs we were iassigned to distribute. A few of the pick up locations may have some left but for the most part they are fully distributed. The KY DOT , State Police and the Rider ed class locations also had signs to pass out and may have some left.

You may want to check with them also to see if they may have any available besides the previous pick up locations. Thanks to everyone for posting them and in the non riding months maybe bring them on in and then put them out again next May. Thanks for spreading the word and be sure to let all you know to watch out for motorcycles as the only way to stop the deaths and injuries is to prevent the accident from happening in the first place.

Team SWISS PERFORMANCE ready to Attack Land Speed records at BUB Speed-Trials Bonneville!–As the BUB SPEED TRIALS (www.speedtrialsbybub.com , August 30th to September 3rd) are getting closer, Team SWISS PERFORMANCE has introduced its impressive lineup of riders for this years premier motorcycle Land Speed record event: No less than six different motorcycles with four riders from Switzerland, accompanied by the formerly fastest female rider on the planet Leslie Porterfield and crack Land Speed record legend Sam Wheeler, one of only probably 4 aces in this years race for the ultimate Land Speed Record. Swiss riders will include already experienced “Salt dogs? Ruedi Steck and Sven Traber, added by former team chief Hans Versfeld.

Surprise addition is legendary swiss tuner FRITZ EGLI who will go for the supercharged sidecar record. Egli has a long-time history dating back to the late sixties for his frames and rolling chassis kits, although already in the seventies, he still creates extraordinary motorcycles, like his Egli B-King. He will ride a turbo-charged Suzuki ?Hayabusa?, equipped with a sidecar.

bonne Team+Hayabusa_SP_09_005

Three of the swiss bikes will premiere a new and very special fuel, “E 85 Bio-ethanol is an environment-friendly fuel and we like to promote it throuh our LSR activities?, sais Ruedi Steck, Swiss E85 Promoter of the Year 2008 and organiser of the Swiss PERFORMANCE Custombike- and Streetfighter show, which is now held in conjunction with the SWISS MOTO (www.Swiss-Moto.ch ) , switzerlands top motorcycle event. “It is our 3rd year out on the Salt and we know that everything is possible,” sais Steck, “we come prepared and we hope that we will come home with some new records!?

Especially Sam Wheeler?s EZ-Hook will be in the focus of attention as it is one potential competitor in the race for the ultimate Land Speed Record. Sam has driven the Streamliner up to 355 mph in 2006, but did not back up the record with the mandatory return run, due to a blown tire. With his 30-years plus experience, he will bring new technology and will be a tough competitor to beat! His goal: The Record! No doubt about it: The Race is ON!

They were built by a couple of California builders to keep the budget down & judged by a panel of big shots. Arlen Ness will be a judge along with Dave Nichols & a WWII historian. The judging will take place in a hanger with a couple of old WWII era airplanes, one being an American plane & the other is a Jap Zero.

After lengthly negotiations the pilot was finally picked up by the History Channel and destined to be aired the first week in September. Hang on for more reports.

FIVE REASONS ENTREPRENEURS SHOULD OWN MOTORCYCLES–We?ve heard about how poorly the motorcycle manufacturers are doing these days. Sales and profits are down, some plants are in danger of closing and now dealers with multiple dealerships in one city are being asked to consolidate into one location. They say it?s because ?discretionary spending? is down.

When did owning a motorcycle become discretionary??

As American as entrepreneurship, I argue that owning a motorcycle is vital to an entrepreneur?s long -term business success. I learned many years ago that the skills and techniques necessary to be a successful biker directly transfer into my daily business life. Here?s my List of 5 reasons why:

1. Running a business is one long road trip ? The first thing bikers learn is how to get from here to there safely and successfully. We know how to select the right destination, plot out the right course to get there and prepare for the unexpected. We know how to overcome adversity along the way whether it?s bad weather (the economy), poor road conditions (market fluctuations), or crazy cagers (competitors). After all, both biking and business are nothing more than vehicles designed to take us where we want to go?one physically ? the other economically.

2. Sharpens your focus ? Biking and business both require that we assume reasonable and controllable risk. And that if not ridden properly?can cause severe damage to you. Therefore, staying upright requires awareness, timing, and a keen ability to sift through the background noise and BS that surrounds you. So the lesson here is not about overcoming fear, but instead understanding and embracing it. Because riding scared is a fast ticket to the hospital and you darned sure can?t run a company scared and be successful.

3. You get to hang out with real people ? Bikers and entrepreneurs are a similar and bold lot ? we?re independent, adventurous, strong-willed, and utterly intolerant of fences. Go to any biker hangout and you?ll see business leaders and professionals sitting next to mechanics, carpenters and real life bikers.

We come together to celebrate the culture of riding?we come to exercise our passion. And we come together to have the type of real-life, no BS conversations that can only happen between two people with nothing to gain but an honest point of view. When?s the last time that?s happened at some flipping Chamber of Commerce meeting?

4. It re-charges your passions ? Passion is the fuel of desire. When that desire is properly channeled you achieve excellence. For an entrepreneur, this passion is fired up by the jazz you can only get when putting yourself ?out there. On a bike, it?s about feeling the crisp air while navigating the winding roads?in business it?s the winding roads of the marketplace. At the end of the day, happiness comes when we turn our passion into performance.

5. It?s a total attitude adjustment ? Ask any entrepreneur who rides and we?ll all say the same thing ? we ride to get away from it all for a while. We do some of our best thinking in the saddle because our synapses are popping right along with that V-twin. Riding an open road seems to charge our brain impulses with an even hotter spark as the sights, sounds and smells combine to rev up all the senses.

That?s why I?d rather be riding my motorcycle thinking about my business instead of sitting in an office thinking about my motorcycle! That?s my list?what do you think? Let me know if you have any other reasons.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ADVANCED WRITING CLASS, Beware the preposition–On my 70th birthday, I got a gift certificate from my wife. The certificatepaid for a visit to a medicine man living on the Pima Indian reservationwho was rumored to have a wonderful cure for erectile dysfunction. Afterbeing persuaded, I drove to the reservation, handed my certificate to themedicine man and nervously awaited what would happen next.

The old man slowly and methodically produced a potion, handed it to me, andwith a grip on my shoulder, warned, “This is powerful medicine and it mustbe respected. You take only a teaspoonful and then say ‘1-2-3.’ When you dothat, you will become more manly than you have ever been in your life, andyou can perform as long as you want.”

I was encouraged. As I walked away, I turned and asked, “How do I stop theaction of the medicine?” “Your partner must say ‘1-2-3-4,’ he responded.”But when she does, the medicine will not work again until the next fullmoon.”

I was very eager to see if it worked so I went home, showered, shaved, fluffed up the three remaining hairs I have on my head, put on lots ofcologne, took a spoonful of the medicine, and then invited my wife to joinme in the bedroom. When she came in, I took off my clothes and said,”1-2-3!”

Immediately, the glory of my manhood expanded to fulfill both of ourlongings. My wife was so excited that she began ripping off her clothes..

When almost fully disrobed, she asked, “Honey, what was the 1-2-3 for?”

And that, boys and girls, is why we should NEVER end our sentences with apreposition! — Otherwise you will end up with a dangling participle!

JOIN THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION (MRF) HERE’S WHY–You can join by phone, mail or by visiting www.mrf.org. We are very careful to make sure that every dollar is spent to achieve the goals of the MRF. Below are some of the things we have been working on for you.

Progress on the HIPPA Loophole

Your help has enabled the MRF to continue the vital work of closing the HIPPA Loophole. Currently, this loophole allows insurers to conceal exclusions of benefits from the insured until a claim has been filed. On March, 31, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives pass HR 1253, the Health Insurance Restrictions and Clarifications Act of 2009. The current legislation will require insurance providers to fully disclose, prior to sale of the plan and prior to participant?s enrollment in the plan, all of the limitations and restrictions of the plan. The bill is now awaiting action by the Senate Committee of Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

First Annual Bikers Inside the Beltway

The Michael ?Boz? Kerr Bikers Inside the Beltway national motorcycle awareness day event took place this past May on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. The event attracted more than 75 attendees and gave our members and Congress an opportunity to discuss motorcycle awareness. The MRF wishes to hold this event every May to continue our efforts to educate Congress and encourage MRF members to participate in our National lobbying efforts.

Right to Repair Act

Currently, manufacturers have been allowed to withhold repair data from anyone other than their own facilities and dealers effectively making it impossible for owners or small repair shops to service some vehicles and bikes. After the introduction of HR 2057, manufactures would be required to make tools and diagnostic information available to independent repair shops on the same basis they make them available to dealer operated shops. Please contact your U.S. Representative and ask them to co-sponsor this piece of legislation.

As always, we thank you for supporting the MRF so we can continue to fight for you and all motorcyclists here in Washington, D.C. If you had any difficulties with your membership, please contact the MRF office by phone at (202) 546-0983 or by e-mail at mrfoffice@mrf.org.

THE UNCLE MONKEY CRYSTAL BALL SPARKLES ON NEW HARLEYS–August is always an exciting month. Many of us finally break away from the office or job site to get out on the road and really rack up the miles on our bikes. August is also the time when Harley-Davidson rolls out their new models for us to gawk, ooh and awe at.

I had some friends over and as usual the conversation centered on bikes. What’s new, what’s old and what’s on the horizon? So I brushed off the old headlight and peered into it glassy glaze to see what’s coming down the road after stock.

Baggers have never been more popular and that trend will continue. The next big thing in the world of baggers will be killer stereo systems. Yes your Electra Glide has a nice stereo, and this is nothing new for the boys in the sunshine states, but it is only a matter of time before the rest of us realize that Alpine, Pioneer and the works have complete marine lines of components. The only real question is where to mount the 12″ sub woofer.

The switch body wise is that we will start to see more baggers with the frames being chopped and stretched. Save what your opinions of what a true chopper is, trust me I know, and I agree but until someone comes up with a good name like Choggers or Bappers I’ll simply refer to them as Chopper Baggers.

High end choppers will still see decline as more and more people switch to baggers to carry their three pairs of sunglasses, silk bandannas, different riding coats…

Choppers won’t die, as hard-core riders will continue building low buck, old skool choppers with skinny rear tires and a few fat tire ones that they scored at discount prices. Also expect to see a resurgence of Triumph choppers.

Softails, while loosing ground to true baggers and Dyna?s will go on. The most versatile of bikes has been around for 25 years and still looks classy but expect to see a change from ape hangers to low-wide bars and more traditional looks a la Knuckle/Panhead.

Sportsters will continue to make huge strides as it is being marketed to the young skate boarder crowd. Always fun, always cheap. The question becomes in which direction will these “kids” go after they outgrow their stock Sportster. Unlike their parents they are a generation that grew up tinkering with their BMX bikes and changing trucks and wheels on their skateboards. The smart money will be on low buck choppers. Hard and edgy. It is going to be exciting to see exactly they will build. Detroit Bros may have been truly ahead of their time.

Dyna?s will continue to grow as more and more people look to them as cheap entry-level bikes that offer the best combination of a rubber mount frame and a plush ride from traditional shocks. Don’t be surprised to see a full fendered FL Dua-Glide coming from the factory as more and more people switch their Super Glides to full fenders, quick detachable saddle bags and windshields. It is only a matter of time. A sensible alternative to the Heritage Softail. You’re welcome Willie G.

My sleeper prediction is the return of the Wide Glide. Uhm, no not the new Wide Glide the factory rolled out this year, but the Wide Glide that we all grew up with and eventually neglected until the factory took it away. Like the band Cinderella said “You don’t know what you got until its gone” and the disappearance of the Wide Glide in 2009 got us all pining for the bike. The classic looks of long stretched forks, 21″ wheel, mini ape hangers and a fat bobbed rear fender with the comfort of a rear suspension. My generation remembers them with the mandatory black and flame paint job, king and queen seat with sissy bar and the rumble of drag pipes. The Wide Glide was thee bike to own after a rigid. The Wide Glide?s glory began to fade with the introduction of the Softail with its pseudo hardtail styling. The aftermarket exploded around the Softail format leaving the Wide Glide/Dyna’s behind. It not a bagger, chopper or a Softail, not old skool or nu-school but simply a Harley. You are already thinking about one right now.

As a whole I see the “Harley crowd” to continue to fracture apart much like we see in automobiles; hot rodders, muscle cars, tuners etc. Each specializing in one specific “model” or genre instead of presenting a unified front as we had in the past. Each group will continue to claim that their style of bike is the one and only to own.

Will I be right? Time will only tell as the mirrored inside of a headlight can only reflect that what is in front of it. Whatever happens to the market in the foreseeable future remember you and your bike are a truly unique and individual ? just like everyone else.

STRANGE GUN BILLS–Senate Bill SB-2099 will require us to put on our 2009 1040 federal tax form all guns that you have or own. It may require fingerprints and a tax of $50 per gun.

This bill was introduced on Feb.. 24. This bill will become public knowledge 30 days after it is voted into law. This is an amendment to the Internal Revenue Act of 1986. This means that the Finance Committee can pass this without the Senate voting on it at all.

The full text of the proposed amendment is on the U.S. Senate homepage,http://www.senate.gov/ You can find the bill by doing a search by the bill number, SB-2099.

You know who to call; I strongly suggest you do. Please send a copy of this e-mail to every gun owner you know.|

|

Congress is now starting on the firearms confiscation bill. If it passes, gun owners will become criminals if you don’t fully comply. It has started.

Very Important for you to be aware of a new bill HR 45 introduced into the House. This is the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sale Act of 2009.|

Even gun shop owners didn’t know about this because the government is trying to fly it under the radar.

To find out about this – go to any government website and type in HR 45 or Google HR 45 Blair Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of Sales Act of 2009. You will get all the information. |

Basically this would make it illegal to own a firearm – any rifle with a clip or ANY pistol unless: -It is registered -You are fingerprinted -You supply a current Driver’s License -You supply yourSocial Security&n bsp;# -You will submit to a physical & mental evaluation at any time of their choosing -Each update – change or ownership through private or public sale must be reported and costs $25 – Failure to do so you automatically lose the right to own a firearm and are subject up to a year in jail. -There is a child provision clause on page 16 section 305 stating a child-access provision. Gun must be locked and inaccessible to any child under 18. -They would have the right to come and inspect that you are storing your gun safely away from accessibility to children and fine is punishable for up to 5 yrs. in prison. |

If you think this is a joke – go to the website and take your pick of many options to read this. It is long and lengthy. But, more and more people are becoming aware of this. Pass the word along.. Any hunters in your family pass this along.|

This is just a “termite” approach to complete confiscation of guns and disarming of our society to the point we have no defense – chip away a little here and there until the goal is accomplished before anyone realizes it.

Just wanted to clear up some FUD that I saw in the news. This is from the NRA:

Clearing Up the Rumors: The Truth About The “Gun Tax Bill” Over the past few months, NRA-ILA has received hundreds of e-mails warning us about “SB-2099,” a bill that would supposedly require you to report all your guns on your income tax return every April 15.

Like many rumors, there’s just a grain of truth to this one. Someone’s recycling an old alert, which wasn’t even very accurate when it was new.

NANCY KIMZEY, DAUGHTER OF EASYRIDERS CREATOR, ACCEPTS LOU KIMZEY’S INDOCTRINATION INTO STURGIS HALL OF FAME– Thank you so much for your write up – I summed up my Dad’stribute with your words. The awards banquet was so much bigger that I expected – wow what a turn out!

I had a good time telling stories – they did a great tribute to my dad – would you like a copy of the video? If so, let me know where I can send it.

No one from Easyriders was there – Biker Rogue said hello – and many ABATEfolks were there. It was too funny that people wanted myautograph at the end.

And the “paparazzi” photographers at the end washysterical! All in all it was fun. It was an honor torepresent the family for Lou. He would have been proud.

Thank you for being a part of this honor – you and dad were great friends.

5-BALL RACING TEAM’S RACE MEETING IN PREPARATION FOR 2010–The Bikernet staff had our annual 5-Ball Racing Team meeting this week. The lengthly agenda was arduous and the margaritas strong. We discussed Valerie Thompson our famous rider, who was recently kidnapped by Wink Eller to ride one of his bikes at Speed Week. I told her I would never marry her, if she rides for Wink. Our investigation continues.

rapido

Rick Krost, from U.S. Choppers stopped by and delivered our first pit bike, a 1968 Harley-Davidson Rapido.

5-Ballgirlbw

We discussed uniforms for 2010 with Chris Kallas, the Bikernet 5-Ball Racing Logo, creator.

Peashooterlowerend
Rodan installed a 500 cc C-model lower end into our 350 overhead valve engine.

We voted on creating a Bikernet frame table for checking and strengthening our Peashooter frame. The engine is being rebuilt by Tom Rodan, and the 4-speed triumph 500 transmission is being checked over by Earl.

The Bonne Belle is in the hands of the Departure Bike Works Crew, Lee Clemens, Andrew, the master fabricator and Brenda Clemens. We are now using a stretched Paughco 45 frame and a big twin 5-speed transmission.

We’ll bring you more report fraught with controversy in the coming weeks. Will we make it back with three bikes next year, or die trying.

BIKERNET METRIC CHECKS IN– Metrics Take 7 of the Top 10 Trophies at the AMD World Championships

It is no secret that Jim Giuffra of AFT Customs and I are good friends. In fact, I am friends with all of his models too?..why wouldn?t I be. Jim and his models, just got back from Sturgis where they entered the latest model-built custom into the AMD World Championships. The bike, known as LowLa, was unveiled at the LA Calendar Show in July where it took first place. Unfortunately, LowLa did not take home a trophy at the AMD World Championships. Jim was not surprised or upset for not taking home a trophy.

?The bikes that won were awesome builds and they deserved to win,? said AFT Customs? Jim Giuffra. ?Though the girls and I built a great custom bike, there was a set budget for it not allowing for all out creativity. I am still very happy for the attention the bike and the girls got at Sturgis as a whole.?

The bike did go to the Rats Hole show while at Sturgis and LowLa took first place in the Custom Metric class. Er Hed, AFT?s entry in last year?s World Championships were it took home first place for Metrics, had not previously been at the Rat Hole show so it was entered and took home the first place in the Radical Metric category. Overall, the AFT Customs team was very pleased and had a kick-ass time at Sturgis.

On the way home, they stopped by Bonneville to check out the Salt Flat races and there was some cool pictures taken of them. I will be sharing all of the cool pictures in the next few weeks and we will be featuring LowLa as soon as it is photographed.

Of the bikes that won at the AMD World Championships, there were Hondas and Triumphs that topped the list. I will be working with AMD to make sure that ALL of the Metric bikes are seen on Bikernet Metric. Stay right and stay tuned.

WHEELS THROUGH TIME SURVIVES STURGIS 69TH RALLY–What a week. We just got back from the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, SD and I’ve got to say it was one of the most incredible weeks I’ve had in a long time.

Several months back, I got a phone call from my friend Christine Diers from the Sturgis Hall of Fame Museum to let me in on a bit of great news. Christine informed me that I was to be inducted to the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame in the Class of 2009 during this year’s rally. Extremely excited about the news, we began making plans for the weekend right away.

WTTMATT

As I’d never been to Sturgis before, I thought it’d be a great idea to bring a other first-timers with me. My son Matt and good buddy Myron were up to the task. Matt had already been talking with Mike Lichter, the world-renowned Easyriders photographer who has chronicled the Sturgis Rally for over 30 years, about helping with Mikes annual motorcycle exhibit, which would be held for the first time at the Buffalo Chip Campground and Event Center. Matt and Mike picked out some great motorcycles and memorabilia for the exhibit, and we knew it would be an honor to participate.

Fast forward to July 29th. The truck was packed and we were ready to go. We decided it’d be nice to take a bit of a detour, so we headed north to Milwaukee to check out the new Harley museum. I plan on writing about our experience there in the near future, so I won’t get into too much detail, but the place was UNBELIEVABLE. My friend Bill Rodencal showed us all around for the day, and let me tell you, the amount of history encompassed there is fantastic. Original paint bikes with zero miles, nearly 100 year old race trophies, original ads and artwork….I could go on and on.

RM AUCTIONS, IN ASSOCIATION WITH SOTHEBY?S, ANNOUNCE EARLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR AUTOMOBILES OF LONDON EVENT —A very rare 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom 1 ?Jarvis Torpedo? and a hugely historic 1950 Aston Martin DB2 Team Car lead early consignments for RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby?s ?Automobiles of London? event, October 28th, 2009.

LONDON, England (August 11, 2009) – Building upon the success of their recent record-breaking Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event in Maranello, Italy, RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby?s, will proudly return to England on October 28th for the distinguished Automobiles of London event at Battersea Park.

Over the past three years this stylish event has attracted discerning collectors from around the world, emerging as one of Europe?s leading collector car events for the highest quality automobiles.

This year?s event is set to continue the momentum with over 75 of the world?s finest collector cars set to go under the hammer. Amongst early highlights are a very rare, remarkable 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom I ?Jarvis Torpedo?, a unique 1914 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Boattail Skiff, and a hugely historic 1950 Aston Martin DB2 Team Car, which is coming to market for the first time in 53 years.

The elegant, streamlined 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom I ?Jarvis Torpedo?, chassis number 17EX, boasts a rich history. One of only three experimental chassis produced by Rolls-Royce at the time, 17EX was completed and sold new to Maharaja Hari Sigh Bahadur, ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, who kept the car until 1932. The car remained in India up until 1976 when it was shipped to Europe.

AustimMartin

Another notable early consignment for the London auction is the 1950 Aston Martin DB2 Team Car ?VMF 64?, which boasts an impressive race history, including Le Mans and Mille Miglia provenance. Retained by the factory for five years and employed by Aston Martin Chairman, David Brown as his personal transport in the 1950 ? 1955 era, VMF 64 is regarded as the most successful of the three early Team DB2 sports cars. Over the years it has been driven by such period greats as Abecassis, Macklin, Sommer and Brackenbury, and its competition career has included two Le Mans, two Mille Miglias, two Alpine Rallies and one Ulster TT, Shelsley Walsh and Silverstone event. Notably, in 1951 it finished third overall at Le Mans.

The October 28th event will also present a rare, historically important 1962 Chaparral 1 Sports Racing Car, chassis number C1-004, one of only five built; a right-hand drive Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster, the only right-hand-drive example ever made; a stylish 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750; and a magnificent series of cars from the renowned Dutch collector, Mr. Edgar Schermerhorn, boasting awe-inspiring coachwork and fascinating provenance. Highlights from the Schermerhorn Collection set to go under the hammer include: a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC Zagato, a 1932 Lancia Astura Limousine by Boneschi and a 1947 Cisitalia 202 Cabriolet.

BIKERNET SAFETY MEDICAL ALERT, EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT, STRATEGIC LIFESAVING WARNING PROCLAMATION–Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)(i.e.. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke ——– Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another ‘sign’ of a stroke is this: Ask the person to ‘stick’ out his tongue.. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

Colleentopper
Hey,

Good news, the recession is abating, or we’re back on the road to recovery, according to several national reports. According to the Week magazine, in 20 cities, home sales are up .5 percent. It’s the first gain since 2006. The Standard and Poor’s Index hit 1,000 for the first time since November. I say we don’t buy or support bank stocks, unless they didn’t take bailout funds, or return them. When I was making trips to Vietnam I attempted to procure a Bank of America loan for a new ’69 XLCH. They turned me down for two reasons: I was in the Navy, and I wanted a motorcycle. My parents and I had been customers for 15 years. We pulled all of our accounts and never went back. Now they’re at it again, fined 32 million for lying about bonuses.

Shit, I’m trying to stick with good news. Australians and Swedes are headed back to the coast, turning in their bikes, hanging at the Bikernet Headquarters and flying home. Consequently, the Bikernet staff was introduced to Vegemite, by Kraft, an Australian tradition. Don’t know if I’ll ever be the same. Let’s hit the news. Then I’ll bring you a Bikernet project and content report at the end. It’s all good:

REGINA, CANADA BIKERS nab masked man with machete– It was bikers versus a machete-wielding robber in Regina on Monday night ? and the bikers won.

According to Regina police, a group of 10 “motorcycle enthusiasts” were having coffee at a Tim Hortons restaurant on North Albert Street when, at around 9 p.m., they spotted some suspicious activity nearby.

Two men were observed walking up to a Domo Gas station, with one of them carrying a machete. When the two pulled on masks, Rob Hove and a motorcycling friend jumped into action.

“The gas station attendant came out and started yelling that he was being robbed,” Hove said. “The guy with the machete was swinging it at the gas station attendant, so we went and stopped them.”

The bikers grabbed the man with the machete, seized the weapon and held him for the police.

Hove wound up getting cut but he didn’t go to the hospital. “Krazy Glue works better,” he said. “It hurts to go to the hospital.”

Some people are calling Hove and his friends heroes, but Hove sees it differently.”That’s not right to see him steal their money,” he said. “It costs me more for gas.”

A 22-year-old man has been charged with several offences, including armed robbery and assault with a weapon. Police continue to search for a second suspect.

I’m helping to organize the third annual “Survivors Raffle” fundraiser for YSN. It is called the “Survivors Raffle” because the last ticket drawn wins $10,000.

Only 300 tickets will be sold!

“CASH FOR CLUNKERS” UPDATE–Question: Are motorcycles included in the federal government?s ?Cash for Clunkers? program?

Answer: Motorcycles were not included in the original clunker program, enacted by Congress as part of a Supplemental Appropriations bill in June. The program was slated to run through October 2009, however, due to its popularity, the appropriated funding has been exhausted.

Legislation to provide an additional $2 billion in funding is expected to be voted on and passed in the Senate today to keep the program going. However, the pending funding legislation makes no changes in the existing program and as such, motorcycles will still not be included. No amendments to the existing program were considered, as the addition of any amendments would make it impossible to pass before the upcoming month long recess.

The additional funding legislation will enable the program to continue into September. If there is consideration of a new program after that, MIC will work to get motorcycles included. There are two stand-alone clunker bills pending:

When the clunkers program was originally discussed, Congressional staff involved with the legislation told MIC staff that they would not consider motorcycles because they were having enough difficulty getting support for the car program. However, now that the car program has proven so popular, perhaps there will be a push for continuation. If so, it will provide an additional opportunity to advocate for motorcycle inclusion.

?Bash organisers challenge chief constable – show us yours and we?ll show you ours!?–After a hugely successful and safe Bulldog 23, the organisers and HAMC are angry and disappointed with comments by Warwickshire?s Chief Constable about the event. For the 23rd year in a row the show passed off without any serious incident – this was IN SPITE of the huge policing operation outside not BECAUSE of it as claimed by Mr Keith Bristow.

Once again the police have wasted a huge amount of taxpayers money on a totally unnecessary and unwanted operation which led to just eleven arrests.

The show has an excellent safety record ? one that?s been praised in the past by the police themselves. That record was built up over twenty years when the police presence outside the site was minimal, so it baffles us how Mr Bristow can now claim credit for this year?s safe and successful show.

The chief constable has challenged us to ?open our books? to show where the money goes?as he should know as a limited company we are required to file our records with the relevant agencies every year – this has been done and perhaps Warwickshire police should have checked them BEFORE making their wild and unfounded allegations about organised crime.

There?s also a clear case of double standards here – Mr Bristow is asking us to ?open our books? ? they?ve never been closed – but seems reluctant to tell Warwickshire taxpayers details of his own bonuses?and issue now taken up by the local MP.

We have already rejected the police claims about organised crime?they?ve been asked to come up with evidence at three licence hearings and have failed to do so. We are as disappointed as Mr Bristow that he had to deliver ?a policing operation on this scale?- it wasn?t needed or wanted by either showgoers or the local community which has always supported the ?Bash. As for ?fundraising for organised crime? the only fundraising is by the local Rotary Club and Help for Heroes – who this year raised ?10,072 on site..twice as much as last year..

The Hells Angels are not a ?designated organised crime group? in the UK as claimed by Mr Bristow and we will be seeking legal advice on this and the other unfounded allegations made recently by Warwickshire Police.

Our thanks got to all who came this year and to the people of Stratford for their continued support ?we look forward to Bulldog 24 .

So, I will be stripping it back down, and sending out the frame to G&L Choppers to get it hardtailed. I believe the hardtail I had was crap anyway.

What Makes You A Biker

soldier
This story was approved by our own Corporal Punishment.

This is a question that will invariably engender great debate, argument, rhetoric, verbosity, emotion, and will produce more questions. Herein, I stipulate that the term “biker” is not a term within itself, but rather invokes a degree of state-of-being. A more appropriate question should be, “How much of a biker is a real biker?”

Here listed are qualifiers. These attributes, of a real biker, are rated by the term “spokes.” I use this simply as a grading system. The more “spokes” a person has, the more of a biker he is. In other words, a biker with 15-spokes can comfortably feel more righteous than a biker with only 2- spokes.

Traditionally, the biker is male. We can never get away from that fact, but I discuss gender later.

This is not presented as a merit badge system or as a goal. These “spokes” would be normally gathered by a person simply by existing and living the lifestyle.

Each item listed rates 1-spoke (unless stated). Other than the first item, spokes are gathered in any order.

bike

SECTION ONE, THE MOTORCYCLE

FIRST ITEM – To have a motorcycle. Any mode of transportation, capable of carrying a person, that fits the description: A two-wheeled motor vehicle resembling a heavy bicycle, sometimes having two saddles and a sidecar with a third wheel. – American Heritage Dictionary, and loves the rapport with nature, and the wind in his face. This item by itself will give you a spoke.

ITEM – To have a righteous motorcycle. This is a motorcycle that is accepted as a “kool ride” by those who consider themselves bikers also. This is an automatic Spoke for a Harley-Davidson. It does include a highly customized foreign bike that has one or more of these listed customizations: hard-tailed, with high c.c., extended front end, customized paint job, bobbed, lowered, or engine tuned for performance.

You get another Spoke if you did the customizing yourself, or if you customize the other makes of stock “kool ride.” Other stock motorcycles that rate a Spoke are the older English bikes, i.e., Triumph, Norton, Aerial, et.al. (The new Triumph is a foreign bike.) Also, any of the older American bikes, i.e., Indian, Henderson, et.al. This Item offers two spokes, or more, if you have more than one righteous motorcycle. (Any reference to motorcycle forthwith, meets the description in this Item.)

ITEM – If your only source of transportation is your motorcycle, you get a Spoke.

ITEM – You get a Spoke (each time), if you have ridden your motorcycle more than 600 miles to any of the National Meets, i.e., Daytona, Sturgis, Laconia, et.al. You get one-half point for any distance less than 600 miles. You only get one-half Spoke if you trailered or packed your motorcycle. You rate another Spoke if you did an Iron-Butt trip of more than 2 days and more than 1,000 miles for any reason (each time).

ITEM – If you have ridden your motorcycle in local Meets, of less than 600 miles, 2 or more times a year. This includes Toy Runs, charity runs, hell-of-it runs, or any planned event. You get one Spoke for each year. (The standard of 600 miles was chosen as explained in EZ Riders magazine as the distance of a single day good-ride.)

ITEM – Broken Wings. A Spoke earned for each set earned. (You lose a Spoke if you don't understand.)

ITEM – Give yourself a Spoke for every time you ever pushed your bike more than half-a-mile, rather than leave it.

ITEM – If you've owned a motorcycle of any type for more than half your life from age 10, you get a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've ever moved your bike into any room of your house (or motel room) for any reason, you earn a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've ever ridden in inclement weather, that a cager wouldn't try, you earn a Spoke. If you've ever put on a full-face helmet simply to protect your face from snow, sleet, or rain, you lose a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've ever slept next to your bike at a freeway rest-stop, you earn a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've ever “pegged” another biker (you know, pushed him and his bike with your foot) for any distance, take a Spoke.

ITEM – Motorcycle Mechanical Aptitude. You rate a Spoke if you do your own Tune-ups, and minor repairs. This includes repairing flats (dismounting, repairing tube, re-mounting), ignition timing, points/condenser/coil replacement, carburetor maintenance, or chain/belt maintenance or replacement.

You get another Spoke if you do your own major overhaul top-end (less machine work). This includes break-down, replacement of wrist-pins, pistons, piston rings, jugs, rocker boxes, push rods, etc.

You get another Spoke if you can do a lower-end overhaul (break cases). Another Spoke is available if you do your own gear-box (transmission) overhaul. If you've taken the extra effort to get appropriate tools/equipment to do all the related machine work, give yourself another Spoke. A Spoke is available to you, if you do your own major customizing, i.e. replacing/extending front-end (triple T maintenance), lowering, and painting. Give yourself, yet another, Spoke if you have the talent for pin-striping, custom-painting, leather-work, etching, or molding.

racing

SECTION TWO – ATTITUDE

ITEM – You rate a Spoke if you've ever broken your hand (or any other bone) in a bar fight.

ITEM – You rate a Spoke if you've broken a cue-stick, for any reason.

ITEM – You rate a Spoke, if you believe a person should take care of his own business.

ITEM – If you've been charged with any crime, you get a Spoke. If you've been convicted, you get another Spoke. (This is not for each time. You don't get credit if you're caught more than once.)

ITEM – If you refuse to get a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license as a matter of principle, and would rather pay the fine, you get a Spoke.

ITEM – If you refuse to silence your motorcycle, as a matter of principle, and would rather pay the fine, you get a Spoke. (In other words if you comply with societies rules, simply because you are afraid of the consequences, you don't get any Spokes.)

ITEM – If you've ever stopped to help an unknown fellow biker on the road, you get a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've ever been asked to leave (or not permitted to enter) a restaurant or other public place, grab a Spoke.

ITEM – If you have been given a “biker name” from your peers, and insist that this is your “real” name, you get a Spoke. If a bank honors a check written to your biker-name, you get another Spoke. If your signature is (or includes) your biker name, you get a Spoke. If you've convinced your associates, or neighbors to call you by your biker-name you earn a Spoke. If one or more of your marriage ceremonies includes your biker-name, you get a Spoke.

relationship

SECTION THREE – RELATIONSHIPS

ITEM – If you've ever bonded your bike to get a brother out of jail (or yourself), you get a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've ever given a woman away for a used pack of cigarettes, you get a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've ever picked your motorcycle over a woman's wishes, you get a Spoke.

ITEM – If any of your ol' ladies ever worked in a topless bar for you, you get a Spoke.

ITEM – If any of your ol' ladies ever “flashed” a policeman, you get a Spoke. If she just flashes anyone 2 or 3 times a month, you also get a Spoke.

ITEM – If your lady supports and believes in your lifestyle, over any situation, you earn a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've traveled any distance to help a brother (this term used to define a friend of like mind, his property or his family), add a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've stood and supported your brother in any public altercation or event, you earn a Spoke.

bikegirl

SECTION FOUR – SILENT PROTEST(The silent protest is a term used for the personal appearance or presentation to the world indicating a despisement of a society that has become too cumbersome, too nosey, over-regulated and restrictive.)

ITEM – Recognizing and accepting that tattoos are an excellent representation of the Silent Protest, one Spoke. Having a tattoo gives you another Spoke. Having tattoos of more than 20% of your body gives another Spoke. Having tattoos in normally socially offensive areas, such as hands, face, genitals, or buttocks is also another Spoke. The same Spokes can be given for piercing's.

ITEM – Having a hair style that is not normally socially acceptable, such as mohawk, shaved (especially with tattoos), or unusually long, is a Spoke.

ITEM – Dressing in a matter of comfort and personal preference and ignoring social norms of pretense; especially in public events, earns a Spoke.

ITEM – If your legs are pale (untanned), grab a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've ever farted in an elevator or other unacceptable place, grab a Spoke.

ITEM – If you shave your beard as a personal preference for comfort and not because it is socially acceptable or expected, take a Spoke.

ITEM – If you've ever worn a T-shirt that has a totally disgusting or anti-social message written on it (especially in a public place), take a Spoke.

ITEM – If you got a bell hanging on your bike somewhere, you get a Spoke. (Don't have to know why, just have one.)

kb prospect

ITEM FROM READER – Membership in a club: 1% = 5 spokes – A.M.A. or H.O.G.= Minus 5 spokes.

SPECIAL ITEM – If you find yourself without a bike (for any reason), you lose 34 (thirty-four) Spokes. It is possible to be a biker-less biker. You may be at a minus Spoke level, but what the heck…get a bike.

This is the last of the items, but I don't pretend there are no more. The term “biker” is a matter of extreme heart and is basically a matter of keeping your ideals in spite of anything. These items are presented only as one man's view, and is subject to debate; but can be a standard of traditions.

As far as the ladies, in this day and age, I find that the female has become a part of the traditional male role of the biker life, and I'm willing to admit that these items can apply to them too. Just reverse the gender.

So, using this standard, one can say, “I'm a biker with 15 Spokes,” or “5”, or whatever. Pretty silly, huh? But, something like this is necessary whenever the question comes up now-a-days, “What is a real biker?”

FOUR Unhealthy Drinks From Dr. Weil’ Bartender–Whether you are watching your weight or just want to eat healthier, taking a look at what you drink is key. Empty calories can lurk in all types of beverages – especially these:

Coffee drinks with full-fat dairy, artificial flavorings, and extras such as chocolate sprinkles. These can pack as many calories (and fat) as a meal. A better option is a plain coffee with soymilk or, better yet, antioxidant-rich green tea.

Frothy summer cocktails. Whether it’s a margarita or a pina colada, sugary summer drinks pack a double dose of calories due to alcohol and sugar – some can top 800 calories in one drink. A better option is a glass of red wine (60-100 calories) or a light beer (about 100 calories).

Non-juice ?juice drinks.? Before buying juice, read the label and make sure it is 100% juice (not just “made with” real juice) and check for added sweeteners and calories. Many of these products are no better than drinking sugar water.

Soda. There just isn’t anything nutritious about soda, whether it’s diet or regular. If you’re a soda addict, break the habit by eliminating soda as a treat, and stop reaching for it automatically with a meal or as a thirst quencher.

World Champion banner

American wins Custom Bike Building World Championship–For the first time since the World Championship of Custom Bike Building program made its debut in 2004, an American custom motorcycle engineer has won the market’s top honor of being able to call himself World Champion.

The winner, Dave Cook of Cook Custom Choppers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was voted World Champion by his fellow competitors at an event that defied motorcycle industry downturn expectations with an increased field of 83 custom bikes in total (compared to 67 in 2008), and one that is widely being hailed as showcasing the most advanced and diverse display of custom motorcycle design and engineering ever seen. The 51 year old Cook is an internationally recognized engineer and creative genius whose passion for design and engineering excellence had seen him be the winningest American in the past two years, having been fourth and highest placed American competitor behind an international top-three in both 2007 and 2008.

“This is a dream come true”, said Cook, minutes after receiving the acclaim of the large crowd of motorcycle enthusiasts and fellow industry professionals who crowded into the downtown City of Sturgis Champions Park venue.

During the build-up to the contest, Cook’s highly anticipated, exquisite, hand-crafted “Rambler” was among the early favorites to become the first American built World Champion custom bike.

However, as competitors pulled their bikes in for competition run-checks and registration at the weekend, it became apparent that competition for top-honors was going to be wide open and fierce, with up to a dozen stunning machines in contention.

“I have dedicated the best part of three years to trying to win the World Championship, and finally I have achieved the ultimate recognition of my fellow professionals. It is very humbling”, Cook went on to say.

It is the culmination of an annual series of worldwide events, including an annual European Championship, that sees hundreds of custom motorcycle design and engineering hopefuls embark on a quest for the opportunity to compete in USA against many of America’s finest motorcycle industry brains.

Dominated by engineers from Canada, Japan and Europe for the first five years since the Championship program’s inception in 2004, American motorcycle customizing has now convincingly broken through on its industry’s biggest stage with seven of the top ten competitors being bike builders based in USA.

Second place was scooped by another American, Kris Krome, of Freeland, Michigan.

STEVEN TYLER FALLS OFF STAGE IN STURGIS–STURGIS – A huge number of fans packed the field in front of the Buffalo Chip Campground main stage to see Aerosmith, but Wednesday’s concert was cut short when lead singer Steven Tyler fell off the stage.

Tyler was singing the Top 10 hit ?Love In An Elevator? when the sound system went out. He continued to dance around, entertaining the crowd, when he fell off the Chip stage, according to reports.

Aurand, a security supervisor at the campground who saw the fall, said Tyler stepped backward off the stage’s catwalk.

“He does a lot of dancing on the stage and he does a lot of stuff with his mike stand. He put his stand down and twirled around and stepped backwards off the stage,” Sanborn said.

Halfway through the performance, Tyler fell onto a couple of fans in the middle of what was a record crowd, Sanborn said. Security rushed to help him and the crowd cheered when Tyler got back up.

“He was good natured about it,” Sanborn said. “He was in good spirits when he got in the helicopter. He was talking and joking with the physician.”

“It was an unfortunate end to an extraordinary evening,” he said.

Tyler suffered minor head and neck injuries and a shoulder injury, but it wasn’t immediately clear how serious that was, Sanborn said.

After he fell, which was halfway through the performance, Tyler was eventually taken backstage, Sanborn said. Around 12:15 a.m., Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry came out to tell the audience Tyler was being taken to the hospital and that the show would not go on.

A physician at the concert venue attended to Tyler and the frontman was flown to Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Jennifer Horton, the hospital’s vice president of public relations and marketing, said early Thursday that Tyler wasn’t in the hospital directory. Under the privacy laws, that means the person is either not there or chose not to be included in the directory, according to the hospital’s Web site.

This was the first time Aerosmith had performed in Sturgis, but it was Tyler?s second appearance at the rally.

Fans were sure to be disappointed. They had gathered earlier in the day, excited for the big event. Danielle Hudspeth of Pine Ridge said the week Aerosmith was announced as part of the Chip?s 2009 line-up, she decided to go.

I said, ?I?m so going?, Hudspeth said as she clutched her brand new Aerosmith T-shirt. ?Oh my God, I?m so excited, I?m so here.?

Sanborn said the pre-concert ticket sales for Aerosmith were enough for management at the Chip to predict that they?d have the biggest concert crowd in South Dakota history.

Fans were disappointed the concert was cut short but hoped Tyler wasn’t seriously hurt.

Lance Yellow Robe, who said he was 8 eight feet from the stage when Tyler fell off, said “you could kind of see it coming because he was dancing all over the stage.

“I hope he’s OK,” Yellow Robe said. “I could care less about the concert being canceled.”

Two Dangerous Anti-Gun Bills Still Alive in Sacramento–Please Contact Your State Legislators Today! When the California Legislature returns from recess next week, it will consider two serious threats to our Second Amendment freedoms and they must be defeated at all costs.

Assembly Bill 962 is currently awaiting action in the Senate. Sponsored by Assembly Member Kevin De Leon (D-45), AB962 would make it a crime to privately transfer more than 50 rounds of ammunition per month, even between family and friends, unless you are registered as a ?handgun ammunition vendor? in the Department of Justice?s database. Ammunition retailers would have to be licensed and store ammunition in such a manner that it would be inaccessible to purchasers. The bill would also require that purchasers submit to fingerprinting, which would be kept in dealers’ records and subject to inspection by the Department of Justice. Lastly, mail order ammunition sales would be prohibited.

Senate Bill 585 is awaiting consideration by the full Assembly. SB585, introduced by State Senator Mark Leno (D-3), would prohibit the sale of firearms and ammunition on the property or inside the buildings that comprise the Cow Palace. In short, SB585 is a stepping-stone to banning gun shows on all publicly-owned property in California.

JENNIFER’S APPOINTMENT WITH BIKERNET MYSTIC–During a recent publicity outing, Jennifer sneaked off to visit a fortune teller of some local repute. In a dark and hazy room, peering into a crystal ball, the mystic delivered grave news.

“There’s no easy way to say this, so I’ll just be blunt: Prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death this year.”

Visibly shaken, Jennifer stared at the woman’s lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself.

She simply had to know. She met the fortune teller’s gaze, steadied her voice, and asked her question.

“Will I be acquitted?”

PPG-PAINTED CORVETTE WINS ?STREET MACHINE OF THE YEAR? AT GOODGUYS PPG NATIONALS–STRONGSVILLE, Ohio ? July 27, 2009 ? There are lots of cars on the street, but there?s only one ?Street Machine of the Year.? And in 2009, it?s a stunning, PPG-painted 1962 Corvette that wowed the crowd, got the unanimous approval of the judges and drove off with the coveted ?Street Machine of the Year? award at the 12th annual Goodguys PPG Nationals held recently in Columbus, OH.

While the car looks like a Corvette and would be easily identified as one, it retains very few original components and is nothing like anything that ever came off an assembly line. Known as ?C1RS,? the car is owned by Barry Blomquist of Onalaska, WI. It was designed by artist Eric Brockmeyer and built and painted by Phil and Jeremy Gerber and their team at The Roadster Shop in Mundelein, IL.

C1RS?s body modifications were created in aluminum and then executed in fiberglass. Brockmeyer came up with a paint scheme based on black to complement and accentuate the ?Vette?s low-slung, swooping profile. The Roadster Shop chose the PPG Deltron? brand product line to enhance the car?s appearance. The Deltron coatings used included DPS 3055 gray primer and DCC 9300 single-stage black along with other Deltron metal preps.

?We?re very happy with the results we got with the Deltron coatings,? said Phil Gerber, co-owner of The Roadster Shop. ?We?ve been spraying PPG products for years. A car like this, you don?t want to diminish it by using anything less than the best paint.?

?This is an absolutely fabulous car and the finish is incredible,? added Blomquist. ?It blends blacks and grays and silvers. These guys created a beautiful car and then made it more beautiful with that PPG finish. It?s fantastic.?

The car looks like a true street machine and performs like one, too. Goodguys street machine contestants must run at least three laps on the autocross course to prove their mettle. C1RS ran away from the other entrants ? 31 of them ? thanks to its road-hugging Roadster Shop chassis, Bowler T-56 transmission and monstrous 618-horsepower, LS7 Turnkey engine. Inside the car, Blomquist will enjoy Italian red leather seats with suede accents, a sculpted aluminum dash and a handcrafted center console.

C1RS took over nine months to complete. It is the street machine to beat for the coming year.

SAVE OUR PLANET RIDE IN YORK–MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN– The Save our Plant petition that thousands of people signed is now in the hands of Harley-Davidson management. After two days of riding motorcycles from York to Harley headquarters in Milwaukee Wisconsin, seven local people meet with the president of Harley’s motor company division where they delivered a strong message of community pride and support, on behalf of thousands in central Pennsylvania.

At the end of an 800 mile journey, motor company president Matt Levatich greeted each rider and thanked them for coming. Each in turn presented Levatich petitions containing five thousand signatures from people who want the York County plant to stay. Mark Gerrick told him, “We’re really proud of Harley, as far as York, Pennsylvania, the county, the state. Hopefully it can work out the breaks and keep you where you belong.” Levatich responded by saying, “We are all in it together. We’ve got to figure it out. It is significant but we are hard at work at it.”

Each one presented a portion of the two inch thick pile of papers filled with signatures. Brian VanScyoc of Lancaster County told the manager “Wee are all here to show our support and we want to keep Harley in York.” Levatich told the group he appreciated the effort. “Well I think this is great! The spirit of it is all with the right intent. I think it’s a reflection of not just our employees but the whole community out in York.”

The Laugerman family has owned the Harley dealership in York for decades. Dave and his wife Denise Laugerman brought their granddaughter along on the trip. He told Levatich keeping the Harley plant open in York County is important to his business and his entire family. “This is my granddaughter. I brought her along just to show that we want to pass it along to her, and that everything in York County stays viable.

Levatich says work is underway to determine if the changes can be made to both the physical structure of the York County facility and adjustments to the workforce to make it more efficient and more competitive. He says “You know obviously uncertainty is stressful for people. So we are going to be as open and honest and communicate as much as we can. We need to help everybody understand what’s going. But there’s a lot that needs to come together and it will come together over time, and we think by the end of the fourth quarter we should be in the position to make the call.”

So with the petition of community support delivered– the riders say its mission is accomplished. Gerrick says “I think it was a good meeting. He (Levatich) seemed to really take our advice to heart. Hopefully it will work out for the plant.” Dan Melhorn of York County agrees. “I’m hoping it will do some good. He sounded positive on some things and hopefully we can work it out with everything that needs to be done.” Dave Thoman who used to drive Harley trucks for nearly twenty years says the meeting went well. “I expected him to be very receptive and he was. It’s been a great ride!”

After meeting with the local riders Levatich said he appreciated the effort of the group traveling to Milwaukee from York. He also said he appreciated the support from the thousands in Pennsylvania who signed the petition or attended last weekend’s rally. He says he hopes the passion and energy can translate to creativity to find ways to keep the plant open. Levatich says he predicts an answer by the end of the year.

The designer has employed different parts of a Kawasaki 1000RX and a number of cars to accomplish the motorcycle sidecar, which took 10 years and nearly 15,000 Euros to combine biking and luxury car ride in a single vehicle.

RM ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL MILLION-DOLLAR CONSIGNMENTS FOR ITS MONTEREY SALE– RM Auctions consigns a rare 1955 Aston Martin DB3S, formerly part of the celebrated ‘Kangaroo Stable’, and one of two short chassis 1937 Talbot-Lago T150C SS Teardrop Roadsters and the ex-Louis Rosier race-winning Grand Prix Car, to its ‘Sports & Classics of Monterey’ event, August 13th – 15th in California.

BLENHEIM, Ontario (August 5, 2009) ? Preeminent international auction house, RM Auctions, is delighted to announce the consignment of a highly-desirable 1955 Aston Martin DB3S and a multiple-race winning 1937 Talbot-Lago T150C SS Teardrop Roadster to its Sports & Classics of Monterey auction event, August 13th to 15th in Monterey, California.

One of just 20 customer DB3Ss built and one of three examples ordered new by Australia?s celebrated ?Kangaroo Stable? racing team, the 1955 Aston Martin DB3S, chassis number DB3S/104, boasts an unbroken chain of ownership through to the present and an impressive racing history spanning from 1956 through to its last known event in 1997.

The 1937 Talbot-Lago T150C SS Teardrop Roadster, chassis number 90115, similarly boasts impeccable provenance and a commendable and unique competition record. Born as one of three Figoni & Falaschi Teardrop roadsters and one of just two short chassis examples, the car?s second owner, gentleman racer Louis Rosier, replaced the original coachwork with new Grand Prix coachwork that remains with the car today.

?The Aston Martin DB3S in particular is rarely available to the market and when it is, traditionally only changes hands privately ? so it is exceptional to find one with such important provenance to be offered for sale publicly. Its offering, as well as that of the Talbot-Lago, truly represents a once-in-a-lifetime ownership opportunity and we expect both cars will attract significant interest from discerning collectors from around the world,? he added.

Both cars are set to be major highlights of this year?s Monterey weekend, along with previously announced 1952 Jaguar C-Type, one of the first delivered to North America and driven by Phil Hill in the 1952 Sheldon Cup at Elkhart Lake to claim the C-Type?s first North American victory.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY STUDY LESSON NUMBER ONE–First Important Lesson – Cleaning Lady.

During my second month of college, our professorgave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one:

‘What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?’

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen thecleaning woman several times.. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50’s, but how would I know her name?

I handed in my paper, leaving the last questionblank. Just before class ended, one student asked ifthe last question would count toward our quiz grade.

‘Absolutely,’ said the professor…. ‘In your careers you will meet many people. All are significant. Theydeserve your attention and care, even if all you dois smile and say ‘hello.’

I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned hername was Dorothy.
