VEGAS BIKEFEST BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for September 29, 2016

Hey,

There are a couple of heated topics to discuss here. One is the monster in the garage. We could call it government over-reach, control freaks, freedom in trouble or the safety take-over.

Everyday we hear about electric vehicles taking over the planet, we hear about global warming as if you could turn your chopper off and it would be saved. We hear about self-driving cars, as the ultimate safe transportation.

On one end of the spectrum are the folks who feel they can save the world or make a bundle. On the other hand are the government freaks who are dying to build a legacy, and ultimate wealth, under the guise of safety and power.

It’s all nuts, but it’s also a reality we need to deal with. We live in a time and under a government devoted to safety and more regulation over Freedom. It’s nuts, but what the fuck are we going to do about it?

The Weekly Bikernet News is helped along by our active sponsors, including: Cycle Source Magazine, ChopperTown, Iron Trader News, Born To Ride, Las Vegas Bikefest and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation

AUTOCYCLES IN NEW JERSEY– A factory rep from Polaris Corporation came to Trenton, NJ to demonstrate their Slingshot to the members of the Transportation Committees in the Senate & Assembly and to help draft the bill to regulate autocycles as motorcycles in NJ, in spite of ABATE’s best efforts to kill it or amend it. The bill became law as of 8/31/16 and autocycles are now regulated as motorcycles.

None of the autocycle manufacturers have contacted ABATE.

This is an issue. We need to put the industry together with the Motorcycle Rights Community, which is made up of lifetime folks devoted to our freedoms. See the report at the end of the news.—Bandit

ANTIQUE MOTORCYCLE CLUB OF AMERICA NEWS– The AMCA Board of Directors recently held their Annual Fall Board Meeting and elections.

At this time I wish to allow our Cherokee Board to know that Lonnie Campbell is elected AMCA President, Ross Metcalfe is elected Vice President and Mr. Dan Krause, President of the Badger Heritage Chapter has been elected as a new AMCA Director.

As usual these new officers do not officially start in their newly elected capacity until Jan 1, 2017 even though AMCA elections are held around October each year. Thusly please be appreciative of any outgoing Directors until the end of the calendar year when their elected capacity terminates officially.

I would like to write a few congratulatory letters on behalf of Cherokee AMCA to these three gentlemen as well as a thank you letter to Mr. Richard Spagnolli for the positive contributions he has made to the AMCA as well as the personal time commitments of such during his past two terms and his prior time as a Director.

As always I would like a majority vote before I conduct any communication that bears the Cherokee Chapter letterhead and current message. Please let me know your position on such in the near future by replying to me on this email.

As the Chapter President that our Cherokee Board elects annually, I am cautiously enthusiastic about the possible emerging, seemingly more positive, more visionary, more Chapter inclusive direction the AMCA Board may be endeavoring on to be better able to continue promoting the AMCA towards our 63rd year and beyond.

The AMCA certainly has more members worldwide whom do not belong to Chapters than do. In the past two years since the AMCA Board hired Keith Kizer, there has been a renewed and more positive communication direction in working harder with existing Chapters to become better and establishing many new Chapters.

Fred Davis has always done a great job, but it now takes more than one person to get the job done with the size the AMCA membership has grown to today. Chapters as you all know are where the AMCA grew from and hopefully always will remain rooted solidly in these ever changing faster paced and social media driven times where vintage motorcycle enthusiasts are far less club orientated than before.

Conversely I would suggest that Cherokee continue to lead by example and assist both Fred and Keith when asked with any assistance they may need to help other Chapters adapt to these changing times, strategic plan, run more efficiently, grow their Chapter and reduce their aging membership and help promote the AMCA at large. As a Cherokee Board you already know that we can all help these AMCA wheels turn easier, cover more distance and achieve better results by working as a Team.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WICKED WORD OF THE DAY—

Albatross: AL-buh-traws, -tros

noun

1. a seemingly inescapable moral or emotional burden, as of guilt or responsibility.

2. something burdensome that impedes action or progress.

Quotes

If the Republicans want a clean and decisive victory in November, or perhaps any kind of victory, they must get rid of this albatross before going to voters.
— , “Morals and Politics: The Republicans Must Drop an Albatross Before They Can Achieve Real Harmony,” Life, July 14, 1952

Origin of albatross

Albatross is related to the Portuguese term for “pelican,” alcatraz. The spelling was likely influenced by the Latin word for “white,” albus, due to the coloring of the bird. It entered English in the late 1600s.

ONE OF THE MASTERS COMING TO ARTISTRY IN IRON— I’ve worked with a few builders in my life. I stumbled into Andrew Ursich’s shop on Monday to see his project for the Artistry In Iron Show in Las Vegas this weekend. This guy is amazing.

First, this is the third bike he ever built. Second, they invited him and he had a completed, award-winning, Knucklehead to enter, but said, “Shucks, I’ve got a couple of weeks, I’ll start from scratch.”

Third, I chatted with him in his smokin’ 100-degree West Side Long Beach dinky shop with parts scattered around, while waiting on more chrome. He basically had a bare painted frame in front of him and a couple of days to go, yet he was as relaxed as a man who just got laid. Amazing.

I could tell you more stories, like this bike was built around an Ebay purchased Panther 600cc single engine. He built the frame himself, modified the vintage Triumph tank and went to town. Incredible. Can’t wait to see it finished.

His two other bikes will be on display in the Bikernet/5-Ball Racing Leathers booth all weekend long, booth S331. His Knucklehead is for sale.

AARON LEWIS’ SINNER DEBUTS ATOP THE TOP 200 ALBUMS, TOP COUNTRY ALBUMS AND TOP DIGITAL ALBUMS CHARTS– “That Ain’t Country” Behind-the-Scenes Premieres Exclusively on Shazam

Makes Appearances on KTLA, The Big Time, AOL and AfterBuzz

NRA Country Featured Artist of the Month

The momentum doesn’t seem to be slowing down for Aaron Lewis who “brings a raw honesty to his songs on the new album SINNER that Country Music radio has not heard in a long time” (Maverick Magazine). The self-proclaimed “Northern Redneck” and outspoken artist is currently holding the top position on the Top 200 Albums, Top Country Albums and Top Digital Albums Charts as well as comes in at No. 4 on Billboard’s Top 200 Consumption Chart with his first project on Dot Records.

The lead single, “That Ain’t Country,” is currently being introduced to Country radio and has sparked a conversation on the current state of what is being played on the airwaves. “Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and that is what makes America great,” stated Lewis. “I grew up listening to Merle, Waylon, Willie, Charlie Daniels and more on the radio. So when I listen to what is being played today, I barely recognize it as Country music. So that is where the song originated.”

The official video for “That Ain’t Country” premiered recently on American Songwriter and Shazam exclusively premiered the behind-the-scenes footage for fans on the platform. Visit the “That Ain’t County” page on the app to catch the sneak peek.

As September’s NRA Country Featured Artist, Lewis will continue to be promoted via NRA Country socials, online, and on radio, engaging 5 million plus proud members and country fans. He is on the West Coast today (9/26) with appearances on KTLA’s Morning News, The Big Time with Whitney Allen, AOL (Facebook Live) and AfterBuzz TV.

Lewis is also on the road for various stops nationwide including the Route 91 Harvest Ground Festival in Las Vegas on October 1 before he officially kicks off the SINNER TOUR on October 24 at the Troubadour in Hollywood, CA. For a full list of tour dates, visit AaronLewisMusic.com.

JUST WHAT YOU NEED–

For when you don’t feel like running the numbers yourself:

–from the Midnight Express Motorcycle Co.

OVER 90 bikes entered in AMD World Championship– Custom builder community and wider industry reaction to the opportunities provided for doing business at this year’s AMD World Championship, the flagship feature at INTERMOT Customized in Hall 10 in October, continues to be overwhelmingly positive.

This year’s Championship ring was handcrafted in England by Alabaster & Wilson in 18ct gold, diamonds and black onyx. Founded in 1887, Alabaster & Wilson are one of the founders of the internationally reputed artisan jewellery quarter of Birmingham, England and have been award winning makers of fine jewellery, medals, awards and ceremonial items to the British Royal family, Houses of Parliament, and many other famous British and international institutions for over 125 years. This is the highest grade Championship Ring yet awarded to the AMD World Champion of Custom Bike Building and a true one-off piece of art.

Indeed, with the number of booths now being taken by aftermarket vendors (and additional custom program booths by OE manufacturers, including Harley-Davidson), overall reaction to the concept that organizers Koelnmesse are successfully developing has been excellent.

There are 74 builders confirmed for the AMD World Championship, coming to Cologne, Germany, from 27 different countries (including as far afield as the USA, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Russia and Ukraine); in total some 96 bikes are entered into the five classes.

Set-up day for the event is Monday October 3rd, with Tuesday 4th as Press Day, Wednesday 5th as International Trade Visitor and VIP Visitor Preview Day, with public admittance from Thursday 6th through to Sunday 9th. The awards ceremony will be held at 4:00pm on Sunday 9th.

2014 winners

Hall 10 at INTERMOT is one of the best attended halls, being right alongside the two primary visitor entrances – in 2014 over 200,000 people visited INTERMOT in total, with the 11th AMD World Championship being won by Belgian Fred “Krugger” Bertrand’s “Nurb’s” – a futuristic 1650cc BMW.

ROYAL ENFIELD ADVENTURE– Spiritual refuge in the land of snows

Clinging to the Himalayas, Nepal is a relatively unknown but fascinating little country. And it’s impossible not to fall madly in love with it. Its legendary gentle way of life survives in Kathmandu despite frantic urban development, and remains untouched in the smaller Nepalese villages.

You’re left with an indescribable sense of wonder and admiration, in the shadow of the world’s highest peaks, with the chance to learn about a unique traditional culture, somewhere between Hinduism and Buddhism. You’ll leave Nepal a more patient, wise, reflective and above all selfless person.

Members of the Bikernet Staff have tried to pull this trip on Royal Enfields to the Base of Mount Everest for several years. We are at it again.–Bandit

THE CANNONBALL WRAP-UP— I want to thank Vicki “Spitfire” Sanfelipo for producing well-written daily reports on the 2016 Cannonball Rally. All the bikes in the competition were at least 100 years old.

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=13053

Here’s the link to the final report. All of Spitfire’s stories will be archived on Bikernet forever. I would also like to thank our Advertising Director, Blog Supreme Editor, Ben Lamboeuf for his help in launching and promoting every report. The Law offices of Hupy and Abraham and Bikernet Sponsored Vicki in this endeavor.

Not only did she ride across the country and cover this two-week rally, but she also acted as the Cannonball’s private first responder if any emergency arose.

MEETING OF THE MINDS REPORT–
First off, it was wonderful to see so many of you last week and over the weekend in Oklahoma City at Meeting of the Minds. It was a wonderful first experience for me and I am truly appreciative to everyone who helped take the time to introduce themselves and provided feedback and suggestions for going forward as to how we can continue our successful and mutually beneficial relationship.

One document that I wanted to make you aware of that I spoke about during a breakout session is regarding DoT’s Highway Safety Grant Programs. Since my start with the MRF, I have received numerous questions related to available grant opportunities from the federal government and how SMROs may be able to qualify for these types of opportunities and seek funding for their own projects.

I’m pleased to share a document I’ve created (with help from some well-connected friends) which provides additional details on the grant process including an overview, available funding programs for motorcycle safety and awareness, eligibility, a timeline for pursuing funding and ‘hot tips’ from an insider on what to include in your application and proposal and how to make the grant process more seamless.

I’ve attached the document to this email and encourage you to review it and share it with those who might be interested.

If you have any questions, I’m happy to help.

NEWS FROM THE REVIVAL– Hey there fellow Motonerds,

We have a couple of great announcements. You might want to grab your favorite drink. We’ll start it off with the official release of our Rickman Revival Velocette custom and then move into the announcement of The Twist Off, our newest event on November 19th in the near future.

Rickman Revival Velocette

The Revival Cycles team began with a Rickman-Metisse road racing frame powered by a Velocette Venom engine. This particular Velocette engine has been treated to a host of racing tricks such as a ported, dual plug head, 10:1 compression and electronic ignition.

A custom built stainless steel exhaust with a custom megaphone muffler provides plenty of sound and free breathing for the hot engine. An Alton alternator conversion, a MotoGadget M-unit and a fully custom built wiring harness round out the electronics and provide the most modern electronics known to a Velocette.

To read the entire build story click on “SPECS” in the top left corner on our project page.

NEW FROM S&S, Complete Cam Chest Kits– combine all of the best components into one perfectly matched package.

Kits include Cams, Outer Drive Gears (or chain tensioners) Cam Plate, Tappets, Oil Pump, Quickee Pushrod Kit and all bearings and gaskets needed for installation. Each part is designed to work with everything around it and create optimum power and reliability for 1999-’16 and even many 2017 Harley-Davidson big twins (except touring).

Multiple cam grinds as well as chain or gear drive options means we build a kit suited for the performance demands of your motorcycle and you’ll know all the components are designed to work together.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We keep refining this:  While we stumble through life looking for the next beer and motorcycle part, life is changing like crazy, and we need to watch out.

There are two sides to this story. On one
side we can take the positive view: We will ride free forever.

On the other-hand, every regulatory bureau in the United States wants a piece of us from the EPA, to the DOT, Mandatory Health Care, DMV, NHTSA, local noise freaks, GHSA,you name it, but who the hell do they think they’re messing with. We will ride
free forever, goddammit.

So, there actually is only one side, our side. The side of Freedom.

BAGGER OF THE WEEK– Who says big wheel baggerz are out of style? Tattoo festival this summer at Plaza de La Raza in Los Angeles was swarming with ’em.

INTERMOT 2016: Come together – ride now!– All signals are green for the leading motorcycle and scooter show.

In two weeks, fans from all over the world will be meeting up in Cologne for INTERMOT 2016. Right up front in the starting lineup are the numerous world premieres from manufacturers of motorcycles, scooters, E-scooters and E-bikes, which promise a veritable wealth of innovations.

Positioned directly behind these are the new products of a total of 1,127 providers from 41 countries, who are also presenting themselves to the international specialised trade and the biker scene. The extraordinary event programme of INTERMOT has its eye on a podium finish, with spectacular stunt shows and action for big and small.

The basic conditions for an unforgettable course of the trade fair from 5 to 9 October 2016 are optimal: all top players of the industry will be there, and the range of offerings extends from motorcycles, scooters, e-bikes, combustion and electric motors, as well as trailers and sidecars, to parts and accessories for motorised two-wheelers. INTERMOT customized, an area of focus specially targeting the customizing scene, is also taking place for the first time.

Everyone that is anyone in the world of motorised two-wheelers is represented with an impressive presentation at INTERMOT 2016. Trade visitors and the public can look forward to the sophisticated presentations of BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Horex, Kawasaki, KTM, Kymco, the Piaggio Group, Polaris, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha. Expansions: Harley-Davidson and Horex! Daytona, Held, Rev’it, iXS and Rukka will be among those presenting their latest clothing products. Innovations in the parts/accessories segment will be presented by Paaschburg & Wunderlich, Johannes J. Matthies, Parts Europe, Touratech and SW-Motech. Well-known return or new exhibitors of INTERMOT include the renowned companies Detlev Louis and Alpinestars.

INTERMOT 2016 has been able to grow significantly with regard to exhibitors. In comparison to the event (2014: 960), this year 1,127 exhibiting companies are participating – this corresponds to a plus of more than 17 percent. The growth is especially noticeable in the INTERMOT customized section. As a leading global meeting point, INTERMOT is also distinguished by a very high level of internationality. Some 69 percent of the exhibiting companies come from abroad. The strongest contingents are from Italy, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, the Netherlands, the USA, but also China and Taiwan.

INTERMOT Cologne will fill halls 5-10 of the Cologne fair grounds with a total gross floor area of 129,000 square metres. The successful concept of distributing the market leaders through all halls will be continued in order to ensure a steady visitor flow to all areas and segments.

BMW and Yamaha will be exhibiting in hall 6, as will Polaris with the Victory and Indian brands. The Piaggio Group, Suzuki and ZERO are points of attraction in hall 7, while Ducati, Kawasaki and Kymco are positioned in hall 8. Harley-Davidson, Honda, Husqvarna, KTM and Triumph will be presenting their range of services in hall 9.

Trade visitor fans will find INTERMOT customized in hall 10, an autonomous show within the show for the customizing-scene. It is already a tradition that trade visitors and end consumers will experience the whole world of elecromobility on two wheels in hall 5.2. The younger generation finds exactly what it’s looking for in hall 5.1: more than 3,500 square metres of action and fun for kids.

INTERMOTcustomized – meeting point of the scene
In this way, the international customizing scene has been established for the first time as a stand-alone show-within-a-show format under the name “INTERMOT customized”: a presentation platform tailored to the target group. In hall 10.1, in addition to the V2 custom scene, the new wave custom scene of café racers and modern adaptations will also be showcased.

Exhibitors here include, for example, vehicle manufacturers BMW, Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, Triumph, Yamaha and Boss Hoss. The providers DMD, John Doem Nolan and Rusty Pistons from the helmets and clothing product segment will be there. In addition to this, many young and wild companies will be showing their products in the Craftrad Concept Store. Among others, Custom Chrome Europe, Motorcycle Storehouse and Detlev Louis will be exhibiting parts and accessories for the customizing segment. Impressive conversions and concept studies from WalzWerk Racing, Fred Kodlin, No Limit Custom, Independent Choppers and Ehinger Kraftrad will be on display.

Also in the INTERMOT customized programme: in the Garage Area one can look over the shoulders of the pros working on project bikes; the wild custom sprint bikes of the Sultans of Sprint, which you can experience on the racetrack and in a special event, as well as a barber shop and a tattoo studio.

New is also the “Boulevard of Touring”, which will run centrally along the northern boulevard at INTERMOT 2016. Touring motorcycles parked in the theme areas invite visitors to sit on them and try them out.

LETTER FROM THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION– Brothers and Sisters,

With the MRF Meeting of the Minds in the books, it’s that time again! The Appointment of State Representatives occurs annually with the MRF Meeting of the Minds! I’ve reached out to your SSMRO Executive Leadership, but I also want to reach out to you, since we need your participation to keep the MRF strong!

The MRF Bylaws mandate that to maintain the openness and transparency of a membership-driven organization, that all State Representatives are confirmed or appointed annually. That cycle begins with the Meeting of the Minds in September. Even if you are remaining as State Representative, we need at least a confirmation of that.

What I need is something in writing – an email is fine – from the Senior Executive (President, State Coordinator, Executive Director, Chairman, etc.) representing each Sustaining SMRO appointing or confirming the State Representative for the coming year.

If your State has multiple SSMROs, our bylaws require confirmation from those other SSMROs. If it will make it easier them, I will accept an email in which all Senior Executives are named and copied in the same letter or email, which will allow them to confirm via the same mechanism.

Currently, I have appointments and confirmations from Alabama, Alaska, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

While we also recognize that every State has a different process, we ask that all States at least re-confirm their State Representatives, even if they are appointed or elected at a different cycle. States can always change that State Representative at a later date by simply sending me another email.

Also, as a reminder, YOU, as State Representatives, appoint and maintain your Assistant State Representatives. Please review that list (refer to http://mrf.org/find-your-mrf-state-representitive/ if you’ve forgotten who your assistants are!) and let me know of any additions or changes.

I look forward to our next teleconference!

Yours in FREEDOM!

As you can see there is a massive community of State motorcycle rights groups. They need industry support, rider support, and memberships. Help ‘em out! –Bandit

PACKING FOR VEGAS BIKEFEST— And I think I’m ready for Sugar Bear’s Wedding. I had my Van checked over yesterday and hopefully it’s good to go. The brothers are loading their bikes with whiskey.

I can’t wait to get on the road. Coming is a report on Dr. Willie’s trike project, Rogue has a couple of Bagger techs and a hot report from Dmac. Before we know it, we will stumble into Biketoberfest in Daytona. Make sure you stop by Destination Daytona and tell the folks Bikernet sent you.

Hang on for non-stop action next week. Oh, and we will have a Sunday Post in the Cantina, while I slap on a tux for the wedding. Never dull.

Ride Free Forever,

–Bandit
