THE INTERESTING TIMES BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for June 16, 2016

Hey,

We are living through interesting times.
Folks are cut up in the streets of the middle-east while bombs blow up their homes and we have folks right here who want to pass quiet zone regulations to enhance the quality of life. Since when was rock and roll not part of our quality of life, our Freedom?

It’s all nuts. But what the hell do I know. Let’s see what’s happening in motorcycling and chopperdom this week.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by Cycle Source Magazine, Iron Trader, the MRF, ChopperTown and Las Vegas Bikefest.

RIDE TO WORK DEMONSTRATION–
The 25th annual Ride To Work demonstration can more than triple the number of riders on some roads. Most motorcycle and scooter clubs and organizations encourage riders to commute by scooter or cycle on this day.

Riders seek employer recognition and support for this form of transportation and increased public and government awareness of the societally positive benefits of utility riding.

Adding motorcycles and scooters helps traffic flow better, according to Ride to Work, a non-profit advocacy organization. Studies have also shown that across the same distances, riders reach their destinations up to 20% faster than those using automobiles.

Most motorcycles and scooters also consume less resources per mile than automobiles. “Riding to work on this day is fun and highlights value of motorcycling. Riding is a form of personal mobility that saves energy, helps the environment and provides a broad range of public benefits,” stated Andy Goldfine, this year’s event organizer.

The Ride to Work website includes:

Useful tools and in-depth information about issues and programs.
An interactive forum to discuss Riding to Work.
An assortment of Ride to Work supporting merchandise.
A wholesale program available to dealers and retailers.
A photo gallery to show your Every Day Ride on the website.

JIMS TOOL OF THE WEEK–
JIMS No. 39361-69 Sprocket Shaft Seal Installer Tool.

JIMS No. 39361-69 Sprocket Shaft Seal Installer Tool installs the left case sprocket shaft seal on 1969-present Big Twins.

No. 39361-69 installs the seal straight and to the proper depth for a no leak fit every time. It works on Timken, roller bearing, and Twin Cam models that have the Timken upgrade.

Naturally, it features JIMS lifetime tool warranty and is made in the USA. Suggested retail price is $106.60.

EAST COAST SWING BEGINS FOR PIRELLI AT HIGH POINT RACEWAY–

The fourth round of the 2016 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is set to kick off this Saturday, June 18 in Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania for the 40th anniversary of the Red Bull High Point National.

For the first time this season, riders will compete on East Coast soil, which is certain to bring new challenges for the each of the talented athletes, such as humid weather and soft-rutty track conditions. The Pirelli SCORPION MX32 front and rear tires are designed for optimum performance in soft-intermediate terrain, however, Pirelli’s complete tire lineup will be on hand to weather any storm that the riders may face.

Autotrader/Monster Energy/Yamaha’s Justin Barcia is one rider who is looking forward to the championship’s first stop on the East Coast this weekend. The New Yorker has been known to excel on the softer conditions and it should be expected that this year would be no different. Despite being unable to complete one of the motos at Glen Helen, he currently holds down ninth place in the 450MX championship standings. JGRMX teammate Phil Nicoletti suffered a hard crash at Lakewood in 450MX Moto 2, but he is healthy and looking forward to continuing the strong start to his season.

After suffering a hard crash while fighting for position just outside of the top-five at Glen Helen, Weston Peick will return to action in Mt. Morris this weekend. The JRGMX rider was cleared to begin practicing earlier in the week and is determined to get back in the mix.

BTO Sports/WPS/KTM’s Justin Brayton has progressed with each race of the season and many expect him to continue with the momentum this weekend as he enters a track where he has experienced success in the past. The veteran is confident in his ability to put in two strong moto finishes this weekend. Fellow BTO Sports rider Andrew Short started the season behind his fellow competitors as he recovered from injury, but the No.29 is no stranger to running near the front of the class, making it only a matter of time before he returns to top form.

A surprise in the 450MX Class this summer has been BTO Sports/WPS/KTM’s Benny Bloss, who is gaining valuable experience each weekend as a rookie on the professional circuit. He has battled with factory riders on a weekly basis, consistently running inside of the top-10. Keep your eye out for the rising star to knock on the door of his first top-10 overall finish.

In the 250MX Class, Motorcycle Superstore Racing will be out in full force at High Point, featuring a lineup that consists of veteran Jimmy Albertson, Kyle Cunningham, and rookie Josh Osby. Australian Luke Clout, riding for the MAD Racing/Dirt Candy Graphics/Suzuki team, will join the trio of Pirelli-supported riders as he prepares for his first-career race at High Point Raceway.

The opening motos from the Red Bull High Point National kick off on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 1pm ET and can be viewed on MAV TV, while 450 Moto 2 airs at 3pm ET on NBC and 250 Moto 2 at 4pm ET on NBC Sports. Check local listings for channel information.

5-BALL RACING NEWEST VEST, THE FLAT-OUT—
This was the most popular vest at the Chili Cook-off at Bartels’ H-D in Los Angeles. It’s super clean, for club guys or guys who don’t want lots of shit on the outside of their vests. No extra pockets, hidden side pocket, no waistband or flaps.

But it still has two deep internal gun pockets for massive storage for cameras or tools and the exclusive 5-Ball Media pocket. This brother tried it on, then ultimately bought two, one brown and one black.

WE RETURN TO THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY– How do you settle a presidential election when the vote is too close to call? With an ice fishing contest, of course! After the first round of votes were counted, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were deadlocked. Instead of going through a recount, the two agreed to a week-long ice fishing contest to settle the election. Whoever caught the most fish at the end of the week would be the President.

The candidates decided a remote frozen lake in northern Wisconsin would be the ideal place. No observers were allowed on the fishing grounds, but both candidates would need to have their catches verified and counted each night at 5PM.

After Day One, Trump returned with a total of 10 fish, Hillary came back with nothing. Day Two finished, and Trump caught another 20 fish, but Hillary once again came back with nothing. That night, Hillary and her cronies got together and accused Trump of being a “low-life, cheating’ son-of-a-gun.”

Instead of fishing on Day Three, they were just going to follow Trump to spy on him and figure out how he was cheating. Day Three finished up and Trump had an incredible day, adding 50 fish to his total!

That night, Hillary and her democratic buddies got together for the full report on how Donald was cheating. Hillary stood up to give her report and said, “You are not going to believe this, he’s cutting holes in the ice!”

REDWOOD RUN REPORT—
Train’s a movin’ slow. We’re all fucked-up, bloody noses, sore asses, in-and-out of cash and gash. The Fuckin’ run sucked ass, disappointment. It wasn’t worth my time to cover. Fuck that skeleton run. It was dead.

–Soto the Great

But the Good News is:

When we arrived to Garberville my cam timing censer took a shit…so our brother Charlie called his bro from HPC Humbolt Performance Cycle.

The owner Greg shot down with a truck and trailer and picked up the my Dyna…about 45 minutes later he called me up with the issue.

It just so happened that we had some guys in our group who were up in Eureka near the Redwood Harley dealer and they were able to scoop up the sensor and delivered it back to Garberville. The Dyna was back on the road for $80, amazing. Thanks guys!

ROCKIN’ K CUSTOM LEATHER TO ENTER H-D MUSEUM CONTEST–
I think the Flat out vest will be a really good base to build off of. I’m doing more specialized scrolls these days, one of my favorite scroll designs is called the Book of the Dead Scrolls.

It was inspired by a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Hard to believe that not all my inspiration comes from the heart of Montana.

Howard is customizing one of our vests for a contest at the H-D Museum in Milwaukee. We will bring you a full report on his creation and how it does in Milwaukee.–Bandit

Howard asked me to send you a teaser shot of his motorcycle paint job. I have been busy working on it and did the fairing last year. The rest of it will look similar soon. I also have process shots of all the work. Any questions my number is 517-648-2839.

OPEN LETTER TO CYCLE SOURCE MAGAZINE AND BIKERNET.COM–
First off thanks for the June & July copies of Cycle Source magazine. I love it.

And then also Thanks for stopping at the Sobelmans Gives Back to Bikers event on 6/5 here in Milwaukee to raise money for ABATE of Wisconsin. ABATE of Wisconsin is a leader in motorcyclists rights because we are trained to be grassroots legislative lobbyists for our State Motorcyclists Rights Organization. If you own a motorcycle and live in the USA, you should be a member of your SMRO.

I gave you a flier for the Summer Hummer -a great biker party in the north woods of Wisconsin. It is our State Rally for ABATE of Wisconsin. It is this coming weekend June 16-19, 2016. The bands start on Thursday night, and Fri and Saturday they start mid-afternoon -Saturday night headliner is the Sociables! There is camping, shower building with flush toilets, vendors, food & beverage vendors, Must be over 21 y.o, bike games, bar stool races, beer bobbing, wet t-shirt, etc. I plan to arrive Friday 6pm ish.

I did meet Bandit when he came to Milwaukee via Hupy & Abraham law firm -for the 110th HD Anniversary party (I think). I added Bandit to this list. Maybe Bandit will print my little soap box rant;

If you own a motorcycle you should belong to your SMRO (State Motorcycle Rights Organization). In many of the States these organizations are called ABATE, but sometimes these SMRO’s are called something else.

Do some home work fellow riders and become a member of your SMRO to help protect your right to ride free. Then buy your SMRO t-shirts, hats, patches, etc -and wear them proudly. These are our watchdog organizations that look-out for unfavorable motorcycle legislation. Even if you do not have time to attend a meeting or event, your membership is important to each State. Please become a member. It is usually $25 to $35 per year.

The Motorcyle Riders Foundation in Washington DC is our National watchdog organization for motorcyclists, with a full time person in our nation’s Capital. They watch for unfavorable motorcycle legislation on a Federal / National level. It is only $30 per year to be a MRF member. I renew every year as it is important for all of us motorcyle riders.

Please become a member of a SMRO and the MRF. Then even if you don’t attend any meetings or events to support these organizations –at least you’ll be doing your part by being a member. We all need these organization if we want to continue to enjoy the freedoms we have, and if there is any chance for the kids to enjoy them as they get older.

DUCATI ANNOUNCES THE OFFICIAL PARTNERS OF THE PIKES PEAK SQUADRA ALPINA SAFETY TEAM AND RACE SMART PROGRAM–
Shell Advance, Pirelli, Brembo, Silver Car and Master & Dynamic All Sign Up to Support the Inaugural Racer Safety Initiative

For the 100th anniversary of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), Ducati partnered with the race organizers to create the Squadra Alpina Safety Team and “Race Smart” Program to educate and mentor competitors utilizing former PPIHC champions.

To support this invaluable new resource, Ducati today announced the official partners for the program, including Shell Advance, Pirelli, Brembo, Silvercar and Master & Dynamic. These brands will be proudly displayed on all Pikes Peak Squadra Alpina team riding gear and motorcycles, at Fan Fest and in the motorcycle staging area on Pit Lane.

“For Ducati, it’s a matter of giving back to the mountain that has given us so much,” said Jason Chinnock, CEO of Ducati North America. “For our partners, it’s a tribute to the legacy and drama of motorcycle racing at Pikes Peak for the past century and a way to ensure that motorcycles will compete here for the next 100 years.”

The PPIHC is the oldest and most challenging motorcycle race in the Western Hemisphere. Famous for its grueling combination of treacherous terrain, unpredictable weather conditions and ever-increasing speeds up to the 14,115 ft. (4,300 m) mountain peak, Ducati partnered with the PPIHC to develop the Race Smart Program to make sure all registered motorcycle participants have the highest level of preparation and knowledge going into race day.

At the heart of the Race Smart Program is the Pikes Peak Squadra Alpina, a team of former PPIHC champions, who will act as rider coaches, including the current course record holder, Carlin Dunne (2012 – Ducati Multistrada 1200 S /9:52.819). Other team members are Micky Dymond and brothers Greg Tracy and Gary Trachy. The Race Smart Program and the Pikes Peak Squadra Alpina Team is managed by Spider Grips principals Paul and Becca Livingston.

Additional information about the Race Smart Program and Pikes Peak Squadra Alpina Team can be found at www.ducatiusa.com. Fans can also follow the safety team on Twitter @PPSquadraAlpina.

The Story of MOTORCYCLE LAND SPEED RECORD COMPETITION–

A Call for Motorcycles for this New Exhibition

The great Vincent tuner Rollie Free taught us that in Land Speed Record runs, streamlining is of the utmost importance even if that means simply “tucking in” one’s head, torso, arms and legs. Land Speed Record competition is focused on top speed. Eclipsing Rollie’s roughly 150mph run in 1948, unlimited class big guns are now knocking on the 400mph door. But watching the 50cc machines can be almost as exciting.

To help you learn the history of Land Speed Record competition, the technology involved, what it is like to squeeze into a land speed record motorcycle and hurtle down the salt at 200, 300 or more miles per hour, the National Motorcycle Museum is in the research and planning phase for a new exhibit entitled Allstate Motorcycle STREAMLINERS presented by J&P Cycles. The exhibit is set to open June 4, 2016.

The machines pictured are among many already committed for display, but the Museum is looking for additional LSR bikes, riding gear, film footage, models, photos, fine art, stories from tuners and riders and land speed record parts like engines, wheels, frames and more to help tell this exciting story. These items would be on loan for the exhibit, returned afterward.

The STREAMLINERS exhibit will be curated by John Stein, expert on straight line motorcycle competition and author of two books; WORLD’S FASTEST MOTORCYCLE and MOTORCYCLE DRAG RACING; A HISTORY.

If you have Land Speed Record bikes, items to loan or a story to tell you can be included in this one year exhibit running from June 2016 to May 2017. Please contact us at mmederski@nationalmcmuseum.org, or call 614-551-0960.

Make plans to see this exhibit during the National Motorcycle Museum’s June 4 Vintage Rally 2016 event or any time through May 2017 when the 12 month temporary Allstate Motorcycle STREAMLINERS exhibit presented by J&P Cycles will be dismantled.

JUST WHAT YOU GUYS NEED–
Limited collector’s treasure:
The legendary Kawasaki Z1 as a postage stamp!

No doubt, the Kawasaki Z1 made motorcycle history when it hit the market back in 1972 as the most powerful mass-produced motorbike in the world at the time.

Today, nearly 45 years later, the Japanese muscle bike is one of the most sought-after classics on the market. The global fan community is huge and Z1s in top condition now often sell for ten times what the bike cost new originally.

Immortalizing legends on postage stamps is a time-honored tradition. In keeping with this tradition, Z900.us, the globally leading online shop for owners and fans of these unique big bikes, commissioned the German Postal Service to issue an exclusive collector’s stamp depicting this inimitable motorcycle.

The self-adhesive postage stamp with an inscribed value of 70 cents for a standard letter shows a lovingly restored Kawasaki Z1 from 1973 in the arguably most famous color combination of “candy orange / brown,” frequently also referred to as “Jaffa” for short.

As an homage to this bike’s official model name “Z 900” derived from the displacement, only 900 folding collector’s sets featuring two Z1 stamps on the inside pages will be issued. Two stunning photos of this motorcycle adorn the front and back covers of the set.

The rare postage stamp honoring the Kawasaki Z1 is available exclusively online at www.z900.us. The collector’s set holding two stamps sells for 10
euro including shipping and handling.

BIKERNET QUIRKY NEWS OF THE WEEK–GEORGIA-BASED SPRINGER MOUNTAIN FARMS NAMED BEST TASTING BIRD BY COOKING LIGHT MAGAZINE– Blind Taste-Testing Compares Top Twelve Poultry Brands

In a blind taste testing conducted by Cooking Light Magazine, Georgia-based poultry brand, Springer Mountain Farms, was named “Best Tasting Bird” out of the top twelve chicken brands currently on the market.

Out in the July issue, the study was conducted on boneless, skinless chicken breasts, as this is the cut that Cooking Light readers most often purchase.

To eliminate labeling biases, each taste tester was blindfolded, ratings were based on a scale of 1 to 5 and all chicken was poached to 160 degrees for consistency. The test aimed to better inform today’s consumer facing crowded supermarkets filled with a multitude of confusing product claims ranging from organic to free range to pasture raised.

Springer Mountain Farms was named the superior tasting brand, with a score of 3.4 and attributes listed such as “good mellow flavor, meaty yet tender, slices well.”

Based in Mount Airy, Georgia, Springer Mountain Farms is a family-owned poultry producer that raises 100% antibiotic, steroid and hormone free chickens on family-owned farms. The brand is dedicated to providing their chickens with a quality life and diet, resulting in healthier, more delicious poultry for families around the country to enjoy.

GHSA Report Advocates for Universal Helmet Law…Again–
Last week, the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA) released its preliminary data and
findings regarding motorcycle fatalities in 2015.

The GHSA represents the state and territorial highway safety offices that implement programs to address highway
safety. Although GHSA’s primary mission is to improve traffic safety, their latest report appears to be more focused on thinly veiled demands for nationwide universal helmet laws despite their failure to provide real data demonstrating the effectiveness of such laws.

While the report highlights that the preliminary data suggests a 10% increase in motorcycle fatalities in 2015, it fails to connect the presence or lack of universal helmet laws to the projected increase.

In fact, there are a number of other factors that may explain the projected increase, including the climate, education and experience of the motorists involved, and the inclusion of faulty data in the making of this report.

Climate Affects
In 2015 many parts of the country enjoyed a longer riding season than in previous years. Warmer and dryer weather leads to additional time and riding hours on the road. While the report does address this possible explanation, it does not conclude that it has the same influence as the absence of a universal helmet laws.

Education & Experience

Another issue that GHSA barely addresses is the consideration of education and experience. For example, one of the most populace states that experienced a decrease in motorcycle related fatalities was California. While the state has not had any changes to their helmet law, the state did engage in a motorcycle awareness cam-
paign for motorists.

This suggests that perhaps other factors, such as motorist education and awareness initiatives, impact fatalities. Further, the report identifies a connection between riding experience and increases in fatalities. It states that roughly 25% of all motorcycle fatalities are the result of invalid motorcycle licensure.

These statistics underscore the belief long held by the Motorcycle Rider’s Foundation that training and education is a crucial component to motorcycle safety.

Flawed Data
Perhaps one of the biggest questions raised from reading the report is the data itself and specifically, what “counts” as a motorcycle. According to federal statute, a motorcycle is defined as, “a motor vehicle with motive power having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground.”

With the rise of autocycles, a new class of vehicle that has attributes of both a car and motorcycle, it raises the question if this type of vehicle was included in the data supporting the statistics in the GHSA report. As this type of vehicle continues to emerge as a form of transportation, it will be critical that they are addressed independently, and not unfairly categorized with motorcycles or any other form of transportation so as not to skew the data. It is not clear from the report that this consideration is given.

Failure to Connect the Projected Increase to the Lack of Universal Helmet Laws

Despite the report’s effort to relate the projected increase in motorcycle fatalities to the lack of universal helmet laws, it fails to provide any data suggesting a connection between those who were wearing helmets versus those who were not wearing helmets when the fatality occurred. Of the nineteen states that currently have a universal helmet law in place; twelve experienced an increase in motorcycle fatalities between 2014 and 2015.

Of the sixteen states that saw a decrease in motorcycle fatalities in 2015, only six have a universal helmet law. The other ten either allow adults to make their own choice or have no law at all. The report also suggests that the increase in motorcycle fatalities in Michigan is due to the state’s modification of its helmet law in 2012, which allowed adult riders to choose whether to wear a helmet. The report suggests that the 2015 increase in motorcycle fatalities in Michigan is due to fewer riders wearing a motorcycle helmet but have not provided any data to support this claim.

However, the report fails to explain the 18.8% decrease in motorcycle fatalities between 2013 and 2014. According to the National Highway Transportation & Safety Administration (NHTSA), Michigan motorcycle fatalities dropped from 138 to 112 in 2014 despite the change to the state’s motorcycle helmet law.

In conclusion, despite its best efforts, the GHSA report fails to make any connection between the rise in motorcycle fatalities in 2015 and the implementation of universal helmet laws. It is unfortunate that entities such as the GHSA continue to hold such a myopic view when it comes to motorcycle safety.

The Motorcycle Rider’s Foundation encourages the GHSA and other groups interested in a meaningful campaign to enhance motorcycle safety to adopt a strategy that focuses on avoiding motorcycle crashes and not merely surviving them.

INTEXICATED WHILE DRIVING REPORT FROM THE NMA–
New York State has legislation called Evan’s Law that is winding its way through the system. It would allow law enforcement to use a textalyzer to determine if you have been on your phone while driving. This means even hands free phone usage, texting, surfing the web, and engaging with various apps can raise flags.

Using your phone while driving is tempting for many motorists especially if you are in a traffic jam or waiting at a long red light.

According to the Center for Disease Control & Prevention, each day in the U.S. over eight people are killed and 1,161 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver.

Distracted driving means to drive while doing another activity that takes your attention away from the primary job of safely navigating the road.

There are three distinct areas of distraction: visual, manual and cognitive. Intexicated while driving generally involves all three. Your eyes are averted from the road, your hands are off the wheel, and you are certainly thinking about something else other than driving. Driving responsibly means keeping all these distractions to a minimum or, at the most, to a level that doesn’t adversely affect your safe control of the vehicle.

What if you are a responsible driver and never drive while intexicated? You do everything right but you could still become a victim of someone else’s intexication. Colorado Attorney and NMA Member T. W. Cresswell recently had this to say in an email to the NMA office:

As a personal injury attorney, I see an alarming number of inexplicable rear-enders. I’ve suffered several myself. As you stop with the rest of traffic and someone SLAMS into your rear for no apparent reason, it is infuriating. Texting is naturally suspected. Under current evidence laws, the phone records of the defendant aren’t admissible because even though texting may be revealed at or near the time of the accident, it doesn’t prove that texting occurred when the accident occurred or that it caused it. Seriously, I think that at least the laws of evidence should be changed to make phone records admissible to establish the inference of texting. Lee v. Croskey (Mich. App., 2015).

If Evan’s Law passes in NY State, it will be the first law of its kind in the U.S. that would allow law enforcement to use technology at the scene of a crash to attempt to determine if the collision was related to distracted driving by use of the phone. Evan’s Law is named after Evan Lieberman, a 19-year old who was killed in 2011 as a backseat passenger of a car, which was involved in a collision with a texting driver.

Assistant Speaker of the NY Assembly Felix Ortiz & Senator Terrence Murphy introduced the bipartisan S6325A bill, which would help create a protocol for police and allow them immediate access to a driver’s cell phone.

Much like a breathalyzer attempts to determine blood alcohol content, a textalyzer would try to determine if the driver was actively using his/her phone at the time of the crash. Cellebrite, the Israeli tech company that is currently developing the textalyzer insists there are no privacy issues. It maintains that the device can only check to see if you were using your phone at the moment of the crash and not the contents on your phone.

Technology though is always moving faster than the law. Fingerprint sensors, a new way for users to protect their phones, may also be a workaround for law enforcement. In February, the FBI arrested Glendale, California resident Paytsar Bkhchadzhyan, on charges related to identity theft. She was compelled by a search warrant to unlock her iPhone with her finger, an action that some experts say falls in a legal gray zone.

In a recent report for NBC News, Washington University privacy law professor, Neil Richards, said the search warrant was problematic for several reasons. Opening the phone with a passcode would have violated Bkhchadzhyan’s Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination, but apparently the use of a fingerprint provides law enforcement some legal cover. “Most people don’t draw a distinction between a fingerprint and a password, but the law does,” Richards told NBC News.

These laws were written before smart phones and certainly before the biometric encrypted smart phones, that Apple, Samsung and other phone manufacturers have been pushing since the advent of the iPhone 5S in 2013.

Law enforcement is allowed to collect physical evidence during the course of an arrest, such as DNA evidence or fingerprints. But in the Bkhchadzhyan case, the fingerprint that unlocked her phone opened up a window to her entire life.

If law enforcement is permitted to do unwarranted phone dumps, regardless of the circumstances, the use of devices like the Textalyzer is going to open a whole host of privacy issues and legal challenges.

STURGIS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED–
John Paul DeJoria & Gary Spellman To Highlight Class Of 2016 Ceremony

John Paul DeJoria and Gary Spellman
Sturgis, South Dakota, June 14, 2016
– A pair of philanthropists will be taking center stage for the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s annual Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies as John Paul DeJoria will not only serve as emcee, but welcome his long-time riding buddy and Peace*Love*Happiness Ride co-founder Gary Spellman to the Class of 2016. The 2016 Hall of Fame Induction Breakfast will be held August 10, 2016 at the Lodge at Deadwood in Deadwood, South Dakota.

“John Paul DeJoria is not only a brother motorcyclist to the core, he is a true inspiration to all of us,” says Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame Executive Director Myrick Robbins. “We are honored to have him as this year’s emcee, but don’t forget he is already a member of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s extended family.” DeJoria was inducted into the SMM Hall of Fame back in 2004!

The founder of John Paul Mitchell Hair Systems, DeJoria is one of those fabled American rags-to-riches stories. After having been homeless, he clawed his way up from the gutter to become a captain of industry and philanthropy as well as an ambassador for the United Nations Environmental Project.

“However the most important part of his story is how his long association with motorcycling and the code of brotherhood and helping others that he learned through motorcycling made this transformation possible,” adds Robbins. “His biker background led him to use his success and his extraordinary power to inspire others to benefit not only the motorcycle community but the world at large.”

A love of motorcycling and a chance meeting with fellow Hall of Famer John Paul DeJoria 30 years ago resulted in the founding of the Peace*Love*Happiness charity ride in Austin, Texas, back in 2003. Since then, Gary Spellman has brought his dynamic personality to bear on creative initiatives that have resulted in huge impact for charitable causes.

Originally Intended to support local law enforcement, the scope of Peace*Love*Happiness expanded to encompass first responders and their families and now charities of all types. In fact the ride expanded to three separate events in 2015, benefitting Infinite Heroes, Meeting The Need as well as Austin’s law enforcement community.

“Although Gary is firm in his belief that a person shouldn’t be recognized simply for doing the right thing, we beg to differ,” says Robbins. “Gary’s great works definitely deserve the recognition and a place in the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s Hall of Fame.” In addition to Spellman, four other equally deserving inductees are included in the Class of 2016.

The Class Of 2016

Bert Baker – V-Twin motorcycle drivetrain innovator, businessman and patriot, Bert Baker is committed to using materials, labor, creativity, know-how and grit born of America.

Jerry Covington – Whether it is on TV or the cover of virtually every biker magazine in the world, it is hard to miss custom builder Jerry Covington. What does get overlooked is Covington’s behind the scenes commitment to the motorcycle community, his selfless donation of time and resources to those less fortunate through has various charity projects.

John Penton – One of the most influential figures in off-road motorcycling in the world, John Penton developed a legendary brand of motorcycles that bore his name (better known as KTM today). He also founded Hi-Point, an accessory and distribution company that had 50% of aftermarket sales in the U.S. and set the mold for modern distribution powerhouses.

Gary Spellman – Using motorcycle as a means to further charitable causes, philanthropist Gary Spellman has been quite effective in utilizing motorcycles to raise money for charities benefiting first responders and their surviving families. He has also brought major business owners into the family of motorcyclists as well as creating the Peace*Love*Happiness Charity Ride with fellow Hall Of Famer John Paul DeJoria.

Buddy Stubbs –
Talk about being born into the business, Buddy Stubbs was raised in his father’s Harley dealership in Decatur, Illinois and has spent his entire life in and around dealerships, including opening two of his own in the greater Phoenix area. This year marks his 50th year as a dealer and more significantly an ambassador to the motorcycle lifestyle.

“It is fitting for our 15th Anniversary that we have both John Paul Dejoria and Gary Spellman highlighting the Class of 2016 ceremonies. Their philanthropic works, inspiration and core belief in the positive powers of motorcycle are the pillars that the Museum was founded,” says Robbins. “Honor the Ride. Build the Legacy… Join us for the 2016 Hall of Fame Induction Breakfast on August 10, 2016 at the Lodge at Deadwood in Deadwood, South Dakota. Breakfast tickets are available for a $35 donation, tables of eight for $300. Tickets are available by calling the Museum at 605.347.2001 or they can be purchased online at http://www.sturgismuseum.com/shop/hall-fame-breakfast.

THE WACO REPORT– I was in Waco today…visited the site…very strange and very creepy…

The cops pick on hard-working bikers instead of going after the real enemy, terrorists. Hell, bikers would stand and fight any terrorist with the cops, if given the chance.

MOTORCYCLES BANNED FROM PEBBLE BEACH— The Annual Concourse De Elegance.

The first year motorcycles were included at Pebble was like inviting your gay guy next door to a party just to show how liberal you are. It’s more than a little awkward.

The upper-crusty car folks had some among them who at times suggested including “those motorcycle people”.

Wasn’t it bad enough that they had included those filthy hot rod rabble the year before, now to the horror of many this was the first step before being taken over by and over-run by outlaw motorcycle clubs.

It is a fact that motorcycles, the entire rest of the year are not allowed on the 17-mile drive, period. Ride up to the gate and you’ll be asked to leave!!

So, they said, “We’ll start with American made motorcycles only and then pick a different country each year so we can control how many of them show up.” Anyway there are a few of the “best people” who actually own one of those noisy machines and maybe they would bring them out.

First year was a fair turnout, some nice bikes….but you do need someone to say who should be invited (me) and then one of them to judge them….Huggie Bear, Ventura, California. “Oh my God, he’s not white or one of us.” The rest can be judged by the Ferrari folks or whomever isn’t too busy!!!! It was an all around badly done cluster fuck, and by about the forth year it was time to get rid of the motorcycle rabble.

So, we’ve been banned once more.

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE LONG WINDING ROAD–
A long open road winding through the country side. The sun rides low in the sky to your right, dark rain clouds skirting around to the left out of the way, out of sight, out of mind. Your bike is running smooth. Another mile or another hundred it doesn’t matter.

The Saddleman seat cradles you as you check your speed. A couple notches over the sign but not enough to worry the patrol. It’s been hours since you passed another in any direction but there on the horizon is a trembling single lamp.

A relief, a kinship to another oily soul on this asphalt. You settle in waiting to flash a peace wave but your mind starts focusing in on the approaching bike. Those drag bars, those extra tall risers, that shaking headlight.

As the bike flashes by you quickly make out the shape of the machine and not the rider. That kicked up tank, the chopped fender. New paint hangs from it but it is the unmistakable bike you had built years before.

You twist your head back watching the side mount taillight fade into the distance. You remember the bike. The countless hours you spent grinding and smoothing the frame late into the night. The bloodied knuckles from a stubborn motor that didn’t want to relinquish its stock parts. You danced along the fence on the color, and on the graphics.

Done once, but it wasn’t right, so you tore it down again and made the changes to get it just so. You remember the miles you put on it. The seductive redhead who stole your heart.

Next, the fiery redhead who stomped on your heart. You think about the night you and Big Dave rode straight into the bar. The bark of the D&D exhaust drowning out the owner’s protests. The burnt smell the bar had for years after you two had lined up the front wheels against the bar and lite up the rear tires.

You flash back to the hail storm fifty miles out of Rapid City. That cute waitress who offered up your favorite piece of pie just for a ride. Yesterday was decades away. Jerry had it for awhile until his old lady made him sell it. Heard some kid up north bought it.

It was rumored to have been in Sturgis the only year you missed. From there it had faded into the fabric of the nation. You compare the differences to your new machine, to all the other bikes that had come and gone in between.

You think about running the guy down; tell him that you were the one who built his bike. That there was a silver dollar in the back bone that you never could fish out, that Little Al had turned the pegs on his then brand new lathe.

You let him ride off into the horizon unaware of who you were and what you meant to his ride. You smile, knowing the bike survived all these years, and it is still churning the miles out. You think about where this bike may be headed, about where you might see it again…

WEEKLY GUN NUT REPORT–
California: Public Safety Committees of the Senate and Assembly Pass Deeply Flawed Anti-Gun Legislation

Yesterday, the public safety committees of the Senate and Assembly pushed multiple politically motivated anti-gun bills.

Anti-gun advocates are using the recent tragedies in efforts to restrict the Second Amendment and self-defense in California. The resulting bills are misguided and do nothing to address crime. Rather, they are designed only to restrict the rights of lawful and responsible gun owners.

Unfortunately, both the Senate and Assembly public safety committees passed the wrongheaded anti-gun legislation. The bills now will be considered by the Senate and Assembly appropriations committees.

You can find out more on the Public Safety hearings by reading Patrick McGreevy’s article, Tempers flare as lawmakers move forward with a dozen gun-control bills in wake of Orlando shooting, posted yesterday to latimes.com.

Please contact the members of the Senate Appropriations Committee HERE or use our TAKE ACTION button below and urge them to OPPOSE AB 1664, AB 1673, AB 1674, AB 1695, and AB 2607. Please click here to read our previous alert with an explanation of all the bills.

Please contact the members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee HERE or useour TAKE ACTION button below and urge them to OPPOSE SB 880, SB 894, SB 1235, SB 1407, and SB 1446. Please click here to read our previous alert with an explanation of all the bills.

The NRA would like to thank the California legislators who stood up for your Second Amendment rights today and ask that they and their colleagues on the appropriations committees carry on the fight.

TRANS SINK OF THE WEEK–

I don’t recognize this ‘trans?’
Ya know, pedestal sinks are all the rage these days.

My friend wants to know what all the “trans” bathrooms concern is about.

Said his “trans” bathroom has worked very well for a long time.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY MEDICAL STUDENT WORD OF THE DAY—

Iatrogenic:ahy-a-truh-JEN-ik, ee-a-

adjective
1
. (of a medical disorder) caused by the diagnosis, manner, or treatment of a physician.
Quotes
Time was, doctors could safely communicate among themselves by leaving messages written in Greek and Latin in the patient’s charts, and iatrogenic–doctor-produced–disorders and nosocomial–hospital-produced–infections were very common.
— Richard Dooling, Critical Care, 1992

Origin of iatrogenic
Iatrogenic entered English in the 1920s. The combining form iatro- comes from the Greek iatrós meaning “healer” and adjectival combining form -genic means “produced or caused by.”

Beware of hospitals: Did you know the third largest killer in the United States is the medical profession. Some 220,000 folks die each year of infections in hospitals, mis-diagnoses, medical errors, wrong medications, etc.

Put this in prospective. Just 5000 motorcyclists die each year in the entire country and over half of these deaths are caused by motorists with lots of distractions.

MONICA Lewinsky Fails To Endorse Clinton– Monica Lewinsky released the following statement on Hillary Clinton’s run for President:

“I will not vote for Hillary Clinton. The last Clinton Presidency left a bad taste in my mouth.

As we get closer to November of this election year, citizens must remember that they cannot trust Hillary Clinton to create American jobs. The last time she had a meaningful job, she outsourced it to me. And I simply blew it.”

QUICK, New Bikernet Reader Comment!–

Why still use the chain in the rear and not upgrade to belt drive? I’m currently rebuilding a bad ass 83 fxrs 93-inch Shovelhead.

Lots of reasons. First tradition and it affords custom guys flexibility with odd frames. It also allows more wide tire flexibility. It also allows you to change gearing without issues with the belt. Plus, there’s a cost consideration.–Bandit

QUICK, KEEP THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY OPEN–
I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, ‘Mom, that lady isn’t wearing a seat belt!’

ESCAPE THE MADNESS— Come to Bikernet for some relief and to check what’s happening. I was able to hit two articles this week and I will try to slip over to Saddlemen’s tomorrow to cover Jim’s FXR seat tech.

Peter Linney is all over me to feature this Triumph.

We have been tuning the 5-Ball Factory Racer. It’s still not right, but I refuse to give up. The Baker jockey-shift drum helps me ride a troubled bike with a suicide clutch without scrambling myself against a wall.

Ah, but there’s a Redhead in my life, we have progress on the Salt Torpedo, and the Sturgis run is coming shortly. Can’t wait.

Hang On!
