Vietnam Veterans Day

March 29th is a day for Americans to remember and commemorate the service and sacrifices made by nearly three million service members who served in Vietnam. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the disestablishment of the United States Military Assistance Command in Vietnam, and the day the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam. Our troops, many of them our fathers and grandfathers, came home from Vietnam but didn’t get the proper welcome they deserved. Throughout my time in Congress, I’ve had the opportunity to honor over 671 Vietnam Veterans through commemorative pinning ceremonies. While this welcome home is decades overdue, it’s never too late to say thank you to our veterans. During the war era, nine million active duty served. At one point, over three million were in Vietnam at the same time, which was more than any time during World War II. Today, there are still six million Vietnam veterans in America, and millions of families of those who served during the war. Our veterans and military families have made tremendous sacrifices to protect our freedoms. There are over 54,000 veterans in the State of South Dakota, and although I didn’t serve in the Armed Forces, I work to represent them every day in Congress. Meeting with veterans, hearing their stories, taking their concerns, and understanding their needs has given me a deeper understanding of the tremendous sacrifice that our servicemembers and their families, both past and present, have made to protect our freedoms. I’ll be hosting our first Vietnam veterans pinning ceremony of 2023 in April. Motorcycle clubs come together to offer Vietnam vet one last ride

On Sunday, a group of riders made his dream possible. Vietnam veteran Roger L. Smith was wheeled out of the house, surrounded by loved ones and riders. “I said I want to get on a bike at least one time before I die,” said Smith. And that’s what he got. “He requested a last ride and, for us, it’s veterans helping veterans,” said Steve Murray of Combat Veterans Motorcycle Club. In addition to Combat Veteran, other groups taking part in the ride included Ohio Patriot Bikers and Punishers Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club. Smith’s health has been declining over the last three weeks. “He started having issues with Agent Orange affecting his lungs. His lungs are crystalizing. He can’t breathe that well,” said one friend. Prior to his health issues, friends said he used to solely drive a motorcycle to work, but before Sunday, he hasn’t been on a bike in two years. “I feel like I lost a part of myself,” Smith said. “I haven’t been on a bike in a couple years because of my lungs. I’m dying from inside out. I had to do this for me.” Before the group took off, everyone gathered around Smith for a prayer. “We give you thanks for these veterans as they make his wish come true.” More than two dozen rider then hopped on their bikes, and engines started roaring before they took off for one last ride. “I kept pulling up beside him and he kept putting his thumbs up,” said Murray. “He was so happy. Motorcycle community helps Belen Veteran after fire

Saturday morning dozens of men and women from the motorcycle community stepped up to help him out. Daniel Romero has come a long way since he lost his home in a fire back in September. For months he and his dogs have been living in devastating conditions, with no heat, or water. Romero says he’s never felt more alone in his life. But now the motorcycle community is showing him he’s not alone. Saturday morning bikers from all around the metro, who heard about Romero’s situation, helped him clean up his property. Dozens of men and women, along with the Veterans Memorial are helping him get the property ready for a new trailer, that is being donated. Romero says he never expected the outpouring of support, but it’s nice to have the help – so he can get back on his feet again. Yamaha Expects India to Become its Largest Production Base in 5 yrs

Markets in Indonesia, Vietnam saturating; India priority No. 1, says top executive. Japanese auto major Yamaha Motor Company (YMC) expects India to overtake Indonesia to emerge as its largest base in terms of production output in the next five years. “India sells more than 20 million two-wheelers annually and the numbers are growing. Our company’s market share is in single digits. We want to improve this. There is a lot of opportunity,” says Yamaha India Chairman Shitara. Two-wheeler sales in India increased 6.95% to 19,740,727 units till February this fiscal. In the same period, India Yamaha Motor’s sales remained largely flat at around 732,006 units. The company additionally exported 226,010 units. Yamaha Motor India’s group chairman Motofumi Shitara was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of MT-15 priced at ₹1.36 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). “India is priority number one for us worldwide. We aim to have production volume of 2.5 million units in India in the next five years,” he said. Going ahead, Shitara said the company would steer clear of the mass segment and focus on launching premium motorcycles in the domestic market. The company has also commenced a study on introducing electric two-wheelers in India. Shitara is currently defining the mid-term roadmap for the company till 2025 to lay the foundation on how the brand Yamaha takes shape the country. Apart from growing volumes, Shitara said a focus area for him is to project a strong image for the Yamaha brand in the local market. Yamaha MT-15 was launched on Friday – a 155cc bike with liquid-cooled four-stroke engine mated to a six-speed transmission. MT-15 is priced at Rs 1.36 lakh ex-showroom.
