Is Royal Enfield Releasing Major Updates To Its 650 Range For 2024?

Most interesting of all would have to be a sportier Continental GT 650.

Ever since their debut back in 2018, the Continental 650 and Interceptor 650 pretty much propelled Royal Enfield to the global spotlight. Prior to the launch of these bikes, the brand had a decent footprint in Europe and Asia, with its retro-style machines being a favorite among classic aficionados. While the 650 Twins are well and truly classic in nature, they brought fairly modern performance technology to the equation.

Naturally, a motorcycle with modern-day amenities such as ABS, electronic fuel-injection, and most of all, reliability, is something that anyone can appreciate. Throw in classic styling and an ultra affordable price tag, and what you have is a recipe for success. Indeed, in the past five years of the bikes’ existence, Royal Enfield has somehow managed to continue raking in sales by just updating colors and releasing special editions every now and then.

As such, it isn’t at all surprising that the rumor mills have once again been churning. Word around the block is that RE is gearing up to drop major updates on the 650 model range, particularly to the sporty Continental GT. These updates may indeed be foreshadowed by the components we see in the Super Meteor 650. At this point, it’s important to note that Royal Enfield has yet to release any information on the upcoming 650 range, so the best we can do is speculate. Nevertheless, multiple sources suggest that the bike will break cover in time for the 2024 model year.

So, what exactly can we expect? Well, our friends at VisorDown have an interesting prediction, and it’s that the upcoming Continental GT 650 will be equipped with alloy wheels, and possibly even the inverted front forks found on the Super Meteor. Should the new generation Cafe Racer be equipped with these components, chances are it’ll directly translate lower unsprung weight, which means better handling. Alloy wheels also mean tubeless tires, which also mean more options when it comes to replacing tires for performance purposes.

The Continental GT has long been involved in the world of motorsports, with Royal Enfield launching a one-make racing series focusing on the sporty classic. Indeed, if these updates come into fruition, they could make the new Continental GT 650 Royal Enfield’s most performance-focused model to date.

A Minibike Enduro Race Completely Out Of Its Mind

Three hours of mini bike racing on a grueling 3.5 mile rocky race track. Bikes hold up astoundingly well considering the terrain, but the competition is fierce! Some built an awesome full suspension racing mini bike, and racers do their absolute best on this mini bike race trail.

Only about half the bikes that started this race made it to the finish line.

When you see the number 180, what’s the first thing you think of? For many, it’s a complete reversal—you’re going in exactly the opposite direction from which you came. If you’re Go Power Sports, though, it’s a three-hour enduro race run entirely on minibikes in the wilds of its Texas grounds.

The guys behind the Cars and Cameras YouTube channel participated in both 2021 and 2022. Naturally, the most recent 2022 run was all about improving on mistakes made last year. I mean, that’s what all racers do, isn’t it? Overall, the experience did go a bit better, but there were definitely some hiccups that could be improved upon for 2023.

About 60 or so bikes (give or take) lined up to compete on the day, divided into three different classes. There was a junior class, for young racers. There were also two separate classes for riders with full suspensions, and hardtail riders (who were allowed to have front suspensions). The Cars and Camera crew, in their infinite wisdom, built their full-suspension entry and got it together just one day prior to race day.

While the bike and riders did pretty well, considering, as you’ll see throughout the video, building a bike the day before you plan to race it may not necessarily go how you planned. Although the team was hoping to get on the podium this year, unfortunately, that didn’t end up happening thanks to things like a chain that kept continually trying to pop off the rear sprocket. Also, have you ever had to hold a loose carburetor onto a running bike with your knee?

As they later noted, these are the kinds of things that could have been avoided if they’d had a day or two to properly shake down and test the bike prior to taking it racing. Fixing small issues and tuning the bike would have been a definite plus—and it’s something that the team is planning to do right for next year’s competition.

The attrition was pretty serious, with maybe about half the racers (or possibly less) actually finishing the race at the end. The team was very proud to have finished the race at all, which it did—and although it didn’t end up on the podium, the C&C crew did manage to bag fifth place in the softail class. The mud and memories will last a lifetime—and hey, there’s always next year.

AmPro Yamaha Announces 2023 Team

Ricky Russell, Zach Osborne, Liam Draper, and reigning GNCC WXC Champion Rachael Archer looking to campaign for top honors aboard their YZs

MARIETTA, Ga. – December 1, 2022 – AmPro Yamaha is excited to announce a powerhouse lineup for 2023 with the signing of Ricky Russell to lead the charge in the premier class, and the addition of Zach Osborne and Liam Draper in the 250 class. Returning with the team to defend her crown in the Grand National Cross Country Series (GNCC) is 2022 WXC National Champion Rachael Archer.

Russell returns to the AmPro family looking to fight for the title aboard the all-new 2023 Yamaha YZ450F and will be racing the GNCC XC1 class, the National Enduro Series Pro 1 class, and select US Sprint Enduro rounds. The Washington State rider ended the year on a high note with a victory at the season finale to give him a pair of wins for third in the points standings and looks to keep his momentum rolling into next season.

Coming out of retirement to go off-road racing full-time is former supercross/motocross racer Osborne. A championship-proven rider with a versatile background, he will be joining the program to race the GNCC XC2 class and select US Sprint Enduro races aboard the 2023 Yamaha YZ250FX. Osborne was crowned the Pro Motocross 450MX Champion in 2020 and earned a pair of 250 titles in 2017 – the 250SX East Championship and 250MX Championship. He was also part of the U.S. World Trophy Team at the International Six Days Enduro in 2013 and 2014, and now looks to evolve his talents into the longer more demanding off-road formats.

Draper will be joining the team to compete in both the GNCC XC2 class and the National Enduro Series Pro 2 class. Making his GNCC debut in 2018, the New Zealander looks to keep building on his forward momentum and looks to fight up front aboard the 2023 Yamaha YZ250FX.

Returning to the AmPro Yamaha program is reigning GNCC WXC National Champion Archer who will also be piloting the 2023 Yamaha YZ250FX. In addition to defending her title in the GNCC series, the New Zealander will race select US Sprint Enduro rounds.

The team is also happy to announce their AmPro bLU cRU amateur support riders with Cooper Jones and Ryder Sigety returning with the squad and the addition of Mike Delosa and Simon Johnson.

In 2023, AmPro Yamaha’s primary focus will remain on the Grand National Cross Country Series and the National Enduro Series (NEPG), as well as GNCC University and select bLU cRU special events to support Yamaha riders honing their off-road skills. Russell, Osborne, Draper, and Archer, will also have a renewed focus on the US Sprint Enduro Series as their schedule permits. Additionally, they will be assisting in the development of our AmPro bLU cRU Amateur Team riders at GNCC, US Sprint, and JDay offroad events.

It’s all started on a Sunny winter day when I met with old friend Randy Simpson and he declared, “I want to buy the Dicey Knucklehead.”

I didn’t want to let it go, but I also wanted to honor Randy’s wish. His co-builder, Gary Woodford, passed away and he wanted a tribute to him.

For the first time in 20 years, I didn’t have a shop. I had to do something or chase women and drink whiskey. Irish Rich, from Shamrocks just moved to Sturgis from Denver and had a couple of rusting VL frames. At least I could find parts and start planning.

TOKYO, Japan, October 25, 2022 – Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today announced that it has begun sales of the Honda Power Pack Exchanger e: battery swapping station in Japan, with the first unit delivered to Gachaco Inc., a battery sharing service joint venture. Gachaco today began operation of the first mass-production model of the Honda Power Pack Exchanger e: in Japan.

Honda is striving to realize carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities Honda is involved in by 2050. Electrification of mobility products, which is indispensable to achieve this goal, has three challenges that need to be addressed: short range, long charging time and high battery cost. By addressing such challenges with swappable batteries and their sharing service, Honda is striving to contribute to the acceleration of electrification and expansion of the use of renewable energy.

Honda Power Pack Exchanger e: is a battery swapping station that simultaneously charges multiple units of Honda Mobile Power Pack e: (MPP e:) and enables smooth battery swapping for users of electric motorcycles and other mobile products equipped with MPP e:. The users will have access to fully-charged MPP e: whenever needed at battery swapping stations in the city, which enables efficient use of electrified mobility products without waiting for the batteries to get charged.

Developed as a battery infrastructure which can achieve widespread use inside and outside of Japan, Honda Power Pack Exchanger e: features an exterior design that blends in well with the cityscape and adopts the Honda Power Pack Cloud system that centrally manages all information necessary for a battery sharing service operation in the cloud. Moreover, Honda pursued the convenience and user-friendliness for both battery sharing service businesses and the users of electrified mobility products.

In India, through its local subsidiary, Honda Power Pack Energy India Pvt. Ltd. (HEID), Honda has already started a battery sharing service for electric tricycle taxis (“rickshaws”), using Honda Power Pack Exchanger e:.

By offering the products and operating system for customers who are interested in battery sharing, Honda will continue supporting electrification of their mobility products and contributing to the realization of a low-carbon society.

Simple and smooth battery swapping:

Both the higher and lower slots are designed to have an angle that makes it easy to insert or remove the battery.
The Exchanger automatically begins charging when the battery is put in the slot.
To swap batteries, the user taps the panel on the upper part of the Exchanger with their IC card (integrated circuit card or smart card) for user authentication, ensuring a high level of security.
Based on the user’s mobility product information (such as the number of batteries, and other conditions such as a series or parallel connection of batteries) associated with the preregistered user ID, the Exchanger determines and lets the user know which fully-charged batteries are appropriate for the user via LED display, which enables smooth swapping.

The battery sharing businesses can manage and operate their service efficiently by managing the status of their stations and batteries centrally in the cloud.
The Honda Power Pack Exchanger e: features a structure that makes it possible to perform routine maintenance and cleaning tasks with easy access from the front.
The Honda Power Pack Exchanger e: is equipped with a battery cooling function to suppress the heat-induced degradation of batteries.

Multiple units can be connected and installed as one station:

To increase the number of batteries the station can manage and operate simultaneously, multiple units of Honda Power Pack Exchanger e: (“extension unit”) can be connected per one main unit (“control unit”) of the Honda Power Pack Exchanger e:, offering flexibility to accommodate the needs of the users and operators of the battery swapping station.

Enabling battery swapping even during a power outage:

In case the power supply to the Honda Power Pack Exchanger e: is interrupted due to a power outage or any other reason, the Honda Power Pack Exchanger e: will continue renting batteries to users while drawing power from the pre-charged MPP e: in one of the slots.

With some onlookers’ praise for the project, they decided to take their plans to market. The 1S bike pushes the company toward the sport bike genre with a more aggressive lean angle and sleeker design. Our favorite is Method 143, seemingly an art piece on wheels and ferocious. It has the most attractive rear fairing on any bike we have seen. The team custom fabricates most of the parts in their shop according to the customer’s design ideas and material specifications. Manufactured in the LA facility, this bike is intended to be a premium option for the KRGT-1 Customer.

Isle Of Man TT Announces 2023 Schedule

Two UK Bank holidays should help IOMTT attendees enjoy more racing.

The Isle of Man TT (IOMTT) returned to the Snaefell Mountain Course in 2022 after a two-year hiatus. As expected, drama unfolded over the two-week period, but officials are always searching for ways to make the Tourist Trophy even better. With the aim of enhancing the event’s long-term sustainability by increasing overall visitor numbers, the new 10-race schedule addresses issues identified by IOMTT organizers.

“This research revealed that the existing TT schedule, the Island’s travel capacity, the Island’s accommodation infrastructure, costs factored against the current economic climate, and customers’ changing habits are no longer compatible and do not meet the needs of the event’s customers,” stated MHK Minister for Enterprise Lawrie Hooper.

To optimize the TT’s crowd-welcoming ability, organizers scheduled the opening-day qualifying on May 29, 2023, the U.K.’s Spring Bank Holiday. Authorities also deemed Friday, June 9, 2022, the “TT Bank Holiday”, bookending the racing event with two three-day weekends.

The 2023 Isle of Man TT schedule follows:

Qualifying Week

  • Monday, May 29, 2023 – Morning & Afternoon Qualifying
  • Tuesday, May 30, 2023 – Evening Qualifying
  • Wednesday, May 31, 2023 – Evening Qualifying
  • Thursday, June 1, 2023 – Evening Qualifying
  • Friday, June 2, 2023 – Afternoon Qualifying

Race Week

  • Saturday, June 3, 2023 – Supersport (Race 1) and Sidecar (Race 1)
  • Sunday, June 4, 2023 – Superbike TT
  • Tuesday, June 6, 2023 – Superstock (Race 1) and Supertwin (Race 1)
  • Wednesday, June 7, 2023 – Supersport (Race 2) and Sidecar (Race 2)
  • Friday, June 9, 2023 – Superstock (Race 2) and Supertwin (Race 2)

Of course, many IOMTT attendees predicate travel plans based on their work schedules. By recognizing two Bank Holidays over the course of the 2023 IOMTT, organizers hope to increase the economic benefits to local businesses. From hotels to restaurants to pubs, the extended schedule should help Isle of Man commerce to better accommodate visiting sportbike fans.

‘The Island’s current TT capacity is limited to around 28,000 visitors at any one time, with the current visitor curve highlighting infrastructure pressures in the middle weekend,” added Hooper. “In its simplest form, the new schedule aims to sustain current visitor numbers while promoting growth. We expect this new schedule to encourage new visitor patterns and capitalize on capacity, driving an additional 50,000 bed nights over time, representing an additional spend on the Island of £6 million (~$7M USD).”
