The CIA has flung tens of millions of dollars in cash at President Hamid Karzai to buy influence in Afghanistan, but the money has merely fueled corruption. According to the New York Times, the backpacks fulla cash go to warlords who have ties to the drug trade or the Taliban. Oh bitchin.’
On the positive side, a new study shows that the main ingredient in Tylenol, acetaminophen, can help calm existential dread in the same way it reduces the physical pain of a headache.
This kind of stuff tweaks me. Sequestration is underway and there are reports that there will be 4 million less meals on wheels, but a high paid government employee will deliver millions of dollars in cash to a knowingly corrupt dictator this month.
Okay, so this is supposed to be about freedom. I was told yesterday by Dr. Nuttboy some bad news. Long Beach City College shut down it’s welding and mechanics courses. We need more trade courses not fewer, as Kevin Baas will attest to. We need to give kids the freedom to investigate and try various educational paths.
Now for the really good news. Our Assalt Weapon II streamlined trike effort took a major stride yesterday when I spoke to Kent Weeks of Lucky Devil Metal Works in Houston. He is going to build the frame. He is a master of all things metal, and it will be a pleasure to work with him once more. Paughco has offered a driveline carriage and swing arm, and I have the body from Class glass. As soon as I have all the elements together, we will load everything into the Bikernet 5-Ball Racing van and haul ass to Texas.

THE MAY REPORTS IN JUNE–Sorry I haven’t written lately, the old car guys are trying to work me to death. I finally got the FLT bobber running and titled. It is a blast, the dresser steering makes it feel really light and this old motor is fine. It goes like a rocket.
I would like to run it at Bonneville in the stock class. The tank is Wes’s art practice tank. I just shot some clear on it, so gas wouldn’t wash the art off. I am looking to sell it for around $5500.
The ‘57 Cadillac just left for Australia after I put an Old Air heat air combo in it. Check your decal on the cut down oil tank. Hope all is well with you.

A column about a report placing Colorado Springs among the nation’s top 10 for easy drives drew mixed reviews. So did loud motorcycyle pipes.
Wayne Arvizu took issue with another reader’s comments calling loud pipes “environmental terrorism.”
“Whipping out the word ‘terrorism’ is a very serious statement in today’s society,” Arvizu said.
Motorcycles are loud, he agreed, but airplanes, chainsaws and lawn mowers can exceed the 90 decibel level of motorcycle pipes and you don’t hear anyone calling them terrorists, he said.
“Maybe we should turn our energy to living our lives the best we can and turn the other cheek to those little annoyances that are all too frequent in city living,” he said.
Nerdwallet’s traffic report drew this from David Parker.
“I decided to post a reply to the Nerdwallet story and it was immediately deleted. They obviously don’t like criticism. Needless to say they don’t live here or drive here. Too bad they don’t like criticism. It just goes to show how these firms can take bits and pieces of information and manipulate it for their own uses. If Nerdwallet can’t take the heat then they should get out of the kitchen.”
Here’s what they deleted: “You may think this is one of the best cities to drive in, but I live here and drive back and forth to work every day. Many Colorado Spring drivers are the rudest and nastiest I have ever encountered. Civility, courtesy, and respect for other drivers is seriously lacking in this town and I have lived here for 40 years.”
Kevin Curry, however, agreed with Nerdwallet.
“I’ve traveled across the country and much of the world, and while I could quibble with some of the criteria or rankings, I think the assessment of traffic in the Springs is pretty accurate. It is impossible to describe the 24-hour-a day gridlock in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. to someone who hasn’t experienced it. The same is true of the no-rules combat that best describes driving in Naples, Italy.”

7th ANNUAL PETER MAKRIS MEMORIAL RUN–

What started as a party and ride as a memorial tribute to deceased community leader Peter Makris, has 7 years later, turned into an important fundraiser for the Laconia Fire Department and the Easter Seals NH “Veterans Count” program, which aids active military and families, before, during and after deployment. In Laconia, it is all about “The Ride,” so the Peter Makris Memorial Run starts the week out right, providing hundreds of bikers an unusual opportunity to see all of the scenic lake without stop lights and traffic, thanks to the support of the State and local police. The Peter Makris Memorial Run celebrates the Rally’s 90th year and is again proud to raise the annual private funding needed for the Water Rescue Unit—an essential part of the services of the Laconia Fire Department.

The Peter Makris Memorial Fund has also added the Easter Seals New Hampshire, “Veterans Count” program as a beneficiary, to commemorate Makris’ service as a US Marine as the program assists returning servicemen and women and their families. Peter Makris was also instrumental in purchasing the original boat for the Laconia Fire Department Water Rescue team, so the event has particular significance since the city does not provide funding for this aspect of the Department’s services.

BIKERNET’S PHILOSOPHER Stops the Chatter–
This morning the chatter would not stop in my Mind. Don’t you find days that you just can’t shut off the stuff going on your head? I tried to meditate and slowed it down for a bit, but this is one of those mornings in which I couldn’t shut it off.
I Love doing these writings because they help channel my energy on the answer. As I write I move to a consciousness that moves the chatter in my mind from worry about what I need to get done to knowing that all that needs to get done will get done.
Our Lives are so busy that we need to find a way to just pause and allow Spirits Guidance to take over. I am reminded again that I am not on this path alone and I do have Spirits Guidance there for me when I just take the time to allow It to unfold. As I write my Faith and Trust in Spirit overcomes all stress and anxiety. I feel the Divine within allowing My Good to flow. I remind myself of my favorite mantra:
I act without struggle
I enjoy what I am doing
I am grateful for the wonderful results

An experiment conducted by a clinical neuropsychologist at the?University of Pennsylvania, with Hell For Leather present, has used Magnetic Resonance Imaging to demonstrate that viewing pictures of motorcycles activates a portion of the brain associated with seeking rewards such as sex, drugs and monetary reward.
The results suggest?motorcycles fulfill an appetitive need, activating an important node in?the dopamine reward system.
The experiment was conducted by James Loughead, a doctor of clinical neuropsychology by day and the proprietor of Hammarhead Industries by night using a motorcycle-riding member of his team as the subject.
Here’s the summary of the experiment, written by James:
Neuroimaging research has supported the dissociation of face identification and object processing. However, evidence has emerged suggesting that the FFA is sensitive to any homogeneous group of objects that one has expertise in identifying (We are all experts in faces, some of us are expert with birds and others can identifying the rare and elusive 1952 Triumph TRW Mk1).
For example, an early case report featured a bird watcher with damage to fusiform gyrus who subsequently could not discern different species of birds. Similarly, a car expert with fusiform damage could no longer identify the make and model of cars. These reports sparked a series of neuroimaging experiments that have generally supported this broader role for the (so called) fusiform face area.
In our laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania we have used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to map the FFA and have examined the effect of different emotional facial expressions on brain function in this early part of the visual system. For the demonstration brain scan reported here, we used a similar mapping task but added the appropriate category to match the expertise of the volunteer: motorcycle.
Most fMRI data is averaged over several individuals (16-24 participants) in order to increase the power and reliability of the signal. Single-subject results such as this demonstration scan are prone to false positive error. However, new technologies such as increased magnetic field strength (3 Tesla) and more sensitive instrumentation (32 channel head coil) allow for interesting findings in a single subject.
The brain images shown in the figure highlight two aspects of the demonstration scan. The first panel overlays brain response to faces (red areas) and motorcycles (green areas) with household objects subtracted out. As expected, a portion of the fusiform gyrus is activated by both faces and motorcycles (yellow area is overlap).
Additionally, a very interesting effect was seen when directly contrasting the brain response to faces and motorcycles. In this comparison, we saw bilateral activation of an important node in the dopamine reward system: the caudate nucleus. This brain region showed greater activation to motorcycles compared to faces. The caudate nucleus has been associated with the seeking aspect of appetitive behaviors such as eating, drinking and sex (i.e. seeking rewarding stimuli).
The caudate nucleus is part of a broader brain system that responds to reward stimuli such as sex, drugs and monetary reward. This is an interesting observation that should be viewed cautiously as it is derived from a single demonstration scan, not a research study.
Methods and Materials?Participant: For this demonstration fMRI session we scanned a 31-year-old volunteer with 15 years riding experience and a lifelong interest in motorcycles.
All procedures were approved by the University of Pennsylvania Institutional Review Board.
Task: The participant viewed pictures of faces, motorcycles and household objects while brain signal was measured with fMRI. Pictures were presented in 30-second blocks of similar items. Each image was shown for 1 second (see movie for abbreviated demo task) followed by a simple fixation.
fMRI Acquisition: Blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) fMRI was acquired with a Siemens Trio 3T (Erlangen, Germany) scanner using a whole-brain, single-shot gradient-echo (GE) echoplanar (EPI) sequence with the following parameters: TR/TE=3000/30 ms, FOV=220 mm, matrix= 64 X 64, slice thickness/gap=3/0mm, 40 slices, effective voxel resolution of 3 x 3 x 3 mm. RF transmission utilized a quadrature body-coil and reception used an 32-channel head coil.
Analysis: BOLD fMRI signal was analyzed using standard image analysis procedures including: brain extraction, slice time-correction, motion correction, high pass filtering, spatially smoothing, and mean-based intensity normalization. Signal was then correlated (using general linear model procedures) with a predicted BOLD signal model. Colored areas represent brain regions with signal that was significant explained by our hypothesized model. We used the standard statistical threshold of p < 0.05 (corrected) to create the display images.

ILLINOIS, The Senate passed our “Poker Run” bill, HB2520– with a vote of 52-2. It is now in the House with one of our “Favorite Lady’s”, Rep. Kay Hatcher. It also has 33 co-sponsors as of this writing. It now is listed as Placed on Calendar Order of Concurrence Senate Amendment(s) 1.
This could go and be “Concured” right on the House Floor which could save a lot of time as we only have the 29th, 30th, and 31st left for session unless they extend session for another week.?I don’t want to see the state have extended expenses but I also don’t want to wait till veto session to get our bill.?
Our Poker Run Act bill is up for 3rd reading?This is the bill to legalize Poker Runs for the charities that bikers do and for Not For Profit organizations such as many of our clubs and organizations including us.
Talking Points: No segment in our society raises more money for charities and local citizens that are down and out on their luck than bikers.?Bikers jump at the chance to ride for charities and donate money to those that are down and out of luck, no matter what the occasion and weather forecast.??
Since “Land Based Gaming: has become law, Illinois liquor and Gaming agents have been tearing down our fliers in Restaurants and Bars claiming they are illegal as they use poker cards. spinners, dice,,and marble spinners to complete the run. These items are for gaming and they are illegal to have in bars?On April 20 Bikers raised $20,000 for the family of Illinois State Motorcycle Trooper Kyle Deatherage. Half the money was put in his children’s education fund and the rest was given to the family for expenses. ?This run will be held every year with the proceeds going to a “First Responders” emergency fund.
We all know there are hundreds of charity events out there like this one and dozens more for ?”Charity Organizations” such as “March of Dimes”, “Shiner’s”, “Jerry”s Kids” etc,etc. ?Ask them to help us, to help them??Please call them and ask that they vote YEAH for HB2520 and also to sign on as a CO-SPONSOR of this bill.?This bill was gutted and our own new language was inserted. ?This bill is ours to loose if you don’t react and make those calls.

HARLEY OWNERS HELP TN SOLDIERS–
The custom-built Harley-Davidson motorcycle being raffled off. It displays the names of 22 TN soldiers killed in combat since the Sept. 11th attacks. 11 of the 22 names displayed on the tank of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle that will be given away in September 2013.
(WBIR – Maryville) About 2,000 Harley-Davidson owners pulled into the Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson to celebrate 30 years of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) and the company’s 110 years in operation.
Harley-Davidson’s Regional Manager Valerie Ledterman said, “It really is about the lifestyle. It’s about having a family to ride with no matter where you go on the globe.”
TN National Guard Major General Max Haston flew to East Tennessee in a Blackhawk and showed off a custom-built Harley-Davidson motorcycle that will be given away on Sept. 21 at the Fall Tellico Bike Rally. The V-twin motorcycle has the names of 22 Tennessee soldiers who were killed in combat since the September 11th attacks. All of the parts used to build the Harley-Davidson were donated.
Major General Haston said, “These are our brothers and our sisters that are on here. All of us have served with these soldiers. So when we see these names on it’s very emotional to us.”
Jeff Stormer of Knoxville said, “The dog tags on the tank say it all. They’ve lost a lot of lives and it’s for a great cause to help them out. It’s very heartfelt.”
Doug Short of Chattanooga said, “A lot of us are veterans here. We really are. So anything that we can do for our fellow veterans, the ones of us that are here, we like to remember.”
All of the money raised from the motorcycle raffle will go to the Combat Casualty Relief Fund (CCRF). The CCRF was established to provide financial and other assistance to Tennessee National Guard soldiers when all other resources have been exhausted.

UPDATE Florida Bill to Eliminate Ethanol Requirement Signed Into Law–
Heeding the call of angry consumers increasingly wary of the corrosive effects of ethanol blended gasoline, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed into law legislation to repeal the requirement that all gasoline offered for sale in the state contain a percentage of ethanol. Under previous law, the Florida Renewable Fuels Standard required that all gasoline sold or offered for sale by a terminal supplier, importer, blender or wholesaler in Florida contain 9-10 percent ethanol, or other alternative fuel, by volume.
Ethanol increases water formation which can then corrode metals, plastics and rubber, especially over a period of time when the vehicle is not used. Current high performance specialty parts along with pre-model year 2001 cars and parts may be most susceptible to corrosion.
The life span of vehicles and equipment can be dramatically reduced with the wrong fuel and owners are often confronted with break downs. While the ethanol mandate did not apply to fuel used in collector vehicles, off-road vehicles, motorcycles or small engines, there has been an inability to obtain unblended gasoline for engines that may be damaged by ethanol.

KBC America announced they will be recalling 456 Harley-Davidson helmets manufactured in March 2011–Certain Hybrid C/C Half Helmets failed to conform the Federal motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) #218, which specifies the impact attenuation and penetration requirements.
Not all helmet sizes are affected by the problem, and KBC America adds that they will recall only certain L, XL and XXL units, saying that users wearing these helmets may not be adequately protected in the event of a crash, thus increasing the chances of injury.
According to the NHTSA, “the remedy for this recall campaign is still under development. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Customers may contact KBC at 1-818-526-7771.” Recall campaign number is 13E025000.

THIS IN FROM THE BIKERNET LAW OFFICES–Supreme Court Allows Police to Collect DNA Samples from Arrestees
In a 5-4 decision handed down today in the case of Maryland v. King, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the 4th Amendment does not prevent law enforcement officials from obtaining and testing DNA samples from individuals arrested for serious crimes.
According to the majority opinion of Justice Anthony Kennedy, which was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Stephen Breyer, and Samuel Alito, the use of a Q-tip to swab the inside cheek of an arrested suspect “is ‘no more than an extension of methods of identification long used in dealing with persons under arrest,’” such as fingerprinting, and therefore constitutionally permissible. “In the balance of reasonableness required by the Fourth Amendment,” Kennedy’s opinion continues, “the Court must give great weight both to the significant government interest at stake in the identification of arrestees and to the unmatched potential of DNA identification to serve that interest.”
Writing in dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia, joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan, strongly rejected the majority’s reasoning:
The Fourth Amendment forbids searching a person for evidence of a crime when there is no basis for believing the person is guilty of the crime or is in possession of incriminating evidence. That prohibition is categorical and without exception; it lies at the very heart of the Fourth Amendment. Whenever this Court has allowed a suspicionless search, it has insisted upon a justifying motive apart from the investigation of crime.
It is obvious that no such noninvestigative motive exists in this case. The Court’s assertion that DNA is being taken, not to solve crimes, but to identify those in the State’s custody, taxes the credulity of the credulous. And the Court’s comparison of Maryland’s DNA searches to other techniques, such as fingerprinting, can seem apt only to those who know no more than today’s opinion has chosen to tell them about how those DNA searches actually work.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS NOT on SGI’s user based proposal—

REGINA – An alternative way to charge a fair rate for motorcycle owners by SGI is getting mixed reviews from those who ride.
On Tuesday the company’s president Andrew Cartmell said a user based system that monitors driving habits is in the works.
The new method involves a device that can be hardwired into the bike. It will record acceleration, speed, driving distance and even how hard riders break. This is a pilot project that will help develop a rate system for motorcycle insurance. SGI needs several hundred volunteers to help collect the data.
This comes several months after SGI announced a 73 per cent increase in insurance for motorcycles. The company later backed off after a large public outcry.
The project, however, does not have the confidence of all riders.
“I don’t think it’s anybody’s business what I do and wherever I go or how fast I’m going,” said Angelo Pierno, who has been riding for 25 years.
Pierno does not want anything to do with the new equipment and does not think many others will either.
“What’s going to happen if they monitor and they say, ‘Oh you’re doing 130’ and they’re going to give me a ticket or something?” he asked, laughing. (SGI said those details will be worked out down the road. Right now, all they want is to analyze the data.)
Monitoring is the reason Gayle Look does not like the device. She says it is like someone is virtually keeping track of you.
“I just feel like it’s just another way for the guy to watch ya, see what you’re doing all the time,” she said.
Cartmell said there is still a lot to be figured out and privacy is on that list if it expands in the future.
“If we move to a full blown program, we would do a full privacy impact assessment to make sure all the issues with respect to privacy are covered off,” he said.
Robb Hertzog, owner of Prairie Harley-Davidson and member of the Motorcycle Rate Review Panel, says he was not in favour of the device when he first heard about it, but now he has changed his tune.
“It will make it safer and make the people ride safer,” he said. “If there’s an accident, it tracks that point of centre of the motorcycle.”
Proven safe drivers could see their rates go down. Gayle Look said it would have to be a steep discount to justify being monitored.
“A $50 drop isn’t going to cut it,” she said. “It would have to be a fairly dramatic drop in the insurance.”
SGI said if the pilot project is successful, the system could expand to cars and taxis in the future.

British Bikers Association (BBA) New Website a Huge Success–http://britishbikersassociation.org/ Britain’s most radically vibrant motorcycle association has been welcomed by the motorcycle community and its members as a huge success. The aptly named British Bikers Association (BBA) has now increased its membership dramatically after re-launching their new action and information packed website only last month.
Colin Mahoney chairman of BBA said, “We are growing at a rapid pace and we put this down to the modern day biker wanting a modern day association to help them voice their valued opinions. Many other associations and federations seem lacking somewhat in embracing the new digital mobile era we live in. This will be our biggest strength. To date we have already seen a huge migration from other motorcycle associations and federations which will add further strength to our cause.”
The British Bikers Association was re-launched to reflect that rapid pace of change by providing up to the minute news, advice and for a refreshing change real ‘sledge hammer’ campaigning clout to its newest members.

Interesting. In Los Angeles they made it against the law to tow an illegal’s car for any infraction including no insurance. Get this, the officer can only detain the driver and give them four hours to find a legal driver to come and drive the car home. Officers can’t wait, so they cut the illegals loose. Keep in mind. If I was pulled over, and the officer discovered I had no insurance, my car would be immediately towed. This change in policy has put several tow yard out of business.–Bandit

BIKERNET SECURITY RESEARCH TEAM FINDINGS: NSA Secretly Collecting Phone Records Of All U.S. Verizon Calls

The National Security Administration is secretly collecting phone record information for all U.S. calls on the Verizon network. “Under the terms of the blanket order, the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls,” reports The Guardian, which broke the story of the top-secret project after it obtained record of a court order mandating Verizon hand over the information.
The contents of the call are not recorded and it is also not known whether Verizon is the only cell-phone carrier complying with the massive spying project. The court order concerns all calls to, from, and within the United States.
With this so-called “metadata,” the government knows “the identity of every person with whom an individual communicates electronically, how long they spoke, and their location at the time of the communication,” explains the Guardian.
The Senate’s tech-savviest member, Ron Wyden (CrunchGov Grade: A), has been discretely warning citizens of these kinds of secretive government projects. “There is now a significant gap between what most Americans think the law allows and what the government secretly claims the law allows,” wrote Wyden and Senator Mark Udall to embattled Attorney Eric Holder.
The order apparently draws from a 2001 Bush-era provision in the Patriot Act (50 USC section 1861). The revelation dovetails similar exposes on massive government spying projects, including one project to combine federal datasets and look for patterns on anything, which could be related to terrorism.
Late last year, I wrote about a few actual harms that citizens should be worried about from these types of big-data spying programs. Blackmailing citizens critical of the government seemed like a distant hypothetical, until we learned that the IRS was auditing Tea Party groups and journalists were being wiretapped. Nefarious actors inside the government like to abuse national security programs for political ends, and that should make us all (even more) suspect of government spying.
Some government secrecy is necessary for national security purposes. But it’s justified based on our trust that the information will be used with care. With every passing scandal, the justification for these types of programs becomes more and more questionable.
Either way, this is a massive PR disaster for Verizon. While it’s true that AT&T had it’s own spying scandal, misery still loves company. It’s in Verizon’s interest to somehow implicate other carriers in the spying program. If Verizon is, indeed, not the only carrier, I suspect we’ll be finding out in the near future.

A lot of those nice looking old motorcycles you see on the roads may not be very old at all. Some of the coolest new bikes on the road today look like they came off the production line decades ago.
We asked Wes Siler, editor of the motorcycle Web site RideApart.com to tell us about a few of his favorite retro bikes.
For instance, that’s Wes above — or at least he says it is, and we believe him — riding the Moto Guzzi Racer V7. It’s a replica of the one of the Italian bike maker’s ’70s track bikes. That huge windscreen helps make it comfortable for long distance rides, said Siler.
Triumph Scrambler

Siler prefers the Scrambler to the regular Triumph Bonneville, which he calls a “a perfectly decent motorcycle” but “somewhat lacking in the character department.”

Before making its name as a car company in the United States, Honda was famous here for its motorcycles. Honda bikes, with their excellent in-line four-cylinder engines shook up the whole industry.
The CB1100F harkens back to those glory days. The seat, tail and exhaust headers are suggestive of some of Honda’s most famous 1960s bikes but, according to Siler, it’s all combined with modern quality and reliability.

Ural motorcycles trace their roots to the period shortly before World War II. That’s when Germany still shared BMW motorcycle plans with its friend (at the time) the Soviet Union. Soviet engineers turned those plans into rugged bikes Russia could manufacture at the time.
Not too much has changed since, said Siler. They’re still made in the same Siberian factory.
The Yamal is named after Russia’s biggest nuclear-powered ice breaker.
The sidecar is even painted with the same special 3M coating to help it slip through ice floes, if need be. It comes with an oar that has emergency instructions printed on it.
“In case if emergency: Detach sidecar, jump in, and then paddle like heck.”
Cleveland Cycle Werks Misfit

UNCLE MONKEY HAS THE BLUES–Riding season is finally in full swing and my calendar of events is overwhelming. In the next two weeks I will be zigzagging across the whole province from one day to the next. Weddings and graduations, family and riding club obligations it seems everyone has decided to get everything done this year.
This is on top of possibly moving. Snow White patiently waits in the garage. She was running strong until something came loose in the motor. Nothing drastic but I want to check it out before I run her some more. It has already shaped up into one of those years where I’m so buried with work. I can’t even tell when people are piling on more.
I had planned to work on Snow White this weekend and even managed to get her on the lift before I finally collapsed into bed. When I did get out the garage the next day I found Snow White securely strapped to lift and both lying on their side. Another several hours unstrapping her and getting them both back on their feet. I still don’t know what happen.
The security camera only shows her upright one second, flaying on the ground the next. The mischievous gremlin that taunts my life seems to have had his way with her. Repositioning Snow White revealed that the hinges for the large garage door had torn away. Another day wasted repairing the door, so that I wouldn’t find it lying on top of Snow White. Meanwhile Mrs. Monkey is tapping her foot wondering when I penciled some time in for her.
Life is full of rollercoaster rides. One year we have all the time in the world, the next we are looking for a 25th and 26th hour. One year everything is clicking in full gear and the next we are taking four steps back for everyone forward. This last weekend was the only time for the next four weeks I had time to look at my bike but that came and went. It is times like these I really miss my bike.
Stress levels go through the roof and even a couple of minutes out on the road helps bring the blood pressure down. I can tell family and friends that I can’t bring a truckload of stuff because I’m on my bike. I will survive. Like the rollercoaster it is times like this that makes us feel alive.

NEW IRS PROBLEMS– (CNN) – The Internal Revenue Service is playing defense on a new front: excess spending on conferences.
The IRS spent close to $50 million on 225 conferences between 2010 and 2012, according to briefings given to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.

TIGTA will release an audit Tuesday that details surplus spending at a conference in 2010 for 2,700 people in the IRS Small Business/Self-Employed division.
At a House oversight committee hearing on the issue next week, lawmakers will focus on the August 2010 conference held in Anaheim, California, at a cost of $4 million. Several IRS employees stayed in presidential suites at hotels, the committee learned. Such suites currently cost between $1,500 to $3,500 per night.
“The culture of the federal workforce is one where I don’t think you can underestimate that if you don’t keep reminding the voters – but also the federal workers – that we’re watching, this will happen again,” Rep. Darrell Issa said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Last year, the General Services Administration drew fierce congressional criticism and scrutiny for spending nearly $1 million on a conference in Las Vegas, also in 2010. It featured a controversial video and ultimately resulted in the resignation of the GSA administrator. The administration implemented efforts to clamp down on such spending.
“It doesn’t stay fixed,” Issa said. “One example in Anaheim, when they bought their tickets they said, ‘Well, we’ll pay the per diem rate for these hotel rooms.’ They didn’t negotiate, they didn’t bid it. And this was 2,700 folks. So they could have gotten a considerable reduction. Instead what they said is, ‘We’ll pay full boat, but we want some perks.’ So they ended up with free drinks, they ended up with tickets to games, basically kickbacks.”
Fifteen outside speakers were hired to give presentations at the conference, totaling $135,000, the oversight committee was told. One of the speakers, who was paid $17,000, led a session called “Leadership Through Art.”
The IRS spent $50,000 to produce two videos that were shown at the event. One had a “Star Trek” theme and was reported on earlier this year, while the other video – in which employees learned the Cupid shuffle dance – was released this weekend.
The purpose of the conference was listed as continuing professional education, but credits were not given to attendees, the committee learned. Also, no sign-in sheets were posted outside training sessions, making it difficult for TIGTA to determine if attendees actually went to the sessions.
The IRS has not taken disciplinary action over the conference, TIGTA told the oversight committee, adding that planners were given cash awards for their efforts.
The report comes as the IRS is already under investigation for its admitted targeting of conservative groups that were seeking tax-exempt status in 2010 and 2011.
Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel released a statement Friday about the upcoming audit release, saying such spending is “inappropriate.”
“This conference is an unfortunate vestige from a prior era. While there were legitimate reasons for holding the meeting, many of the expenses associated with it were inappropriate and should not have occurred,” he said, adding that such a conference would not take place today.
“Sweeping new spending restrictions have been put in place at the IRS, and travel and training expenses have dropped more than 80 percent since 2010 and similar large-scale meetings did not take place in 2011, 2012 or 2013.”
