THE BIKERNET MAGAZINE REPORT–
The Discovery Channel Reportedly Acquires the Enthusiast Network–Over 30 automotive enthusiast publications and multi-media to be reportedly purchased by Discovery Communications

What began as just the Discovery Channel in 1985 has moved into one of the largest media platforms in the world, now known as Discovery Communications.

The media giant focuses on its 13 U.S. cable and satellite television networks, including the automotive-oriented Velocity Channel along with the most watched series on the Discovery Channel, Street Outlaws.

Discovery Communications’ diverse entertainment portfolio also includes divisions such as Discovery Education, Discovery Digital entertainment, Discovery Studios, and 49 international media networks, as well as Discovery Global which is involved in everything from cruise ships to amusement parks on a worldwide scale.

Reports have surfaced that the Discovery Communications will now enter the world of automotive enthusiast media by acquiring The Enthusiast Network (TEN) sometime in August 2017. The Enthusiast Network itself is a large media company including everything related to the automotive enthusiast and more. TEN, previously known as Source Interlink Media and Petersen Publishing, currently holds more than 30 automotive media brands like Hot Rod, Motor Trend, Car Craft, Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, Mopar Muscle. These print and online publications have expanded into the rapidly emerging digital and social media as well.

The Enthusiast Network also has 24 enthusiast brands on topics like surfing, motocross, snowboarding, photography, guns, motorcycles and more. Between all of TEN’s enthusiast media avenues, the company reaches over 162 million readers and online viewers annually between print, websites, social media and event attendance. If you think the TEN reader and viewership numbers are huge, all the cumulative viewerships for the Discovery Communications brands currently exceed 3 billion.

With a bit of research in the investor relations area of the Discovery Communications website, one can view the large-scale acquisitions that have taken place over the recent years including acquisitions that have titled them the “ESPN of Europe” (source: The Wall Street Journal).

This news will make for an interesting future as hugely popular print and digital media such as Motor Trend TV, the hit series Roadkill, and such drag racing shows like TEN/Motor Trend TV’s new Put Up or Shut Up come together under the massive umbrella of Discovery Communications.

Could the news of a short-term sponsorship of the Clay Millican driven, Stringer Performance Top Fuel Dragster during the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week series be a sign of things to come?

The Up Front moves you 2 inches closer to the handlebars than the standard Bare Bones.

Killer “Spring Mounted” look!

Yes, that means a bit of the mechanics of the bike are exposed. You will notice the seat lines don’t follow the strut, as if the seat were spring mounted.

Its minimal, slammed to the ground stance adds the finishing touch to these bitchin bikes.

BIKERNET BETSY IS RIDING TO STURGIS–
Nearly every person I sent my letter to wrote back a story of their own addiction, or someone that they loved. It’s such a private fight, and most people don’t share those stories or emotions because they are embarrassed.

It does feel like a violation to talk about my sisters addiction, because I am exposing her in a way that she would never choose herself. But from the select group who I wrote to, I had an overwhelming positive response and a outpouring of support. People want to help. I needed that. She needs that. People need that. I would like to publish it.

Are you going to Sturgis? I am riding out. Haven’t done that in awhile. Looking forward to it and praying we have a problem free journey. I am riding out with Jessie Combs, and she is the Grand Marshall of Sturgis this year. I didn’t know Sturgis had a Grand Marshall. I would like to write the story for you.

TIME TO RIDE Sunday Post for July 23, 2017

My first harmonica was gifted to me by my uncle, when I was a tiny little kid learning how to whistle. It was a Tremolo from a Chinese maker.

This year I started playing harmonica again and have an expensive Hohner Marine Band diatonic harmonica with wooden comb. It is spooky the many things we have in common Bandit. I also have a Music Man electric guitar.

“IF YOU CAN’T KICK HER TO LIFE, YOU CAN’T RIDE HER!”– The new t-shirt for the riders and fans of the Yamaha XT 500

When the Yamaha XT 500 hit the market in 1977, it took the hearts of motorcycle fans around the globe by storm and triggered a run on enduro bikes.

However, in one regard the one-banger four-stroker of the Japanese bike was always a special challenge, in particular for the inexperienced. It did
not have an electric starter and if you didn’t know exactly how the starting procedure using the kick-starter worked, you had a really hard time
kicking an XT 500 to life.

Consequently, the motto of the new t-shirt from online shop XT500.us is: “IF YOU CAN’T KICK HER TO LIFE, YOU CAN’T RIDE HER!”

For the original interpretation of this motto as a humorous t-shirt, XT500.us was able to enlist famous French artist BOD, whose caricatures are featured in many of the world’s leading media. His funny illustration symbolizes the legendary pitfall of the XT 500: from the ladder onto a trampoline and from there with bounce onto the kick-starter!

They high-quality gray mélange t-shirt with black print on the front is available exclusively online at www.xt500.us. The t-shirt comes in sizes M to 3XL and sells for just 23 euros including shipping and handling.

MASSIVE ALERT, CLIMATE CHANGE:

The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulate at Bergen, Norway.

Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone.

Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes.

Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulfstream still very warm.

Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.

Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds.

Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coast cities uninhabitable.

I must apologize. I neglected to mention that this report was from November 2, 1922, as reported by the AP and published in The Washington Post 93 years ago. This must have been caused by the Model T Fords’ emissions or possibly from horse and cattle farts.

Or, quite possibly, Al Gore’s grandfather.

INDIAN MOTORCYCLES ANNOUNCES TITLE SPONSORSHIP & SCOUT BOBBER CUSTOM SHOWCASE FOR NINTH ANNUAL BROOKLYN INVITATIONAL– Customized Indian Scout Bobbers Will Be Unveiled from Keino Cycles, Steve Caballero with Roland Sands Design, and Kraus Motor Co.

Minneapolis, MN, July 24, 2017 – Indian Motorcycle, America’s First Motorcycle Company®, announced today its title sponsorship of The Ninth Annual Brooklyn Invitational Custom Motorcycle Show held September 9, 2017 in Brooklyn, New York. Along with its sponsorship, Indian will unveil three custom versions of the all-new Scout Bobber crafted by Keino Cycles, Kraus Motor Co. and skateboarding icon Steve Caballero, in conjunction with Roland Sands Design.

“With its lean and mean, minimalist design, the Scout Bobber provides builders an ideal platform for customization, and we’re excited to see the creative interpretations brought to life by these three unique customizers,” said Reid Wilson, Marketing Director – Indian Motorcycle. “The Brooklyn invitational carefully curates an exhibition of incredible customs and from some of the world’s most renowned builders, providing the ultimate venue for us to showcase these custom Scout Bobbers and demonstrate the bike’s potential.”

The all-new Scout Bobber was released during X Games weekend in Indian’s hometown of Minneapolis. The muscular new Scout represents a core passion of motorcyclists – connection to the road without a need for anything unnecessary. “Strip it down” was the mantra and inspiration Indian Motorcycle used when developing the latest model in its iconic Scout lineup. A low-slung, blacked-out, minimalist motorcycle that proves less is definitely more.

Indian specifically chose these three well-known customizers, because each brings a uniquely distinct vision and signature style. The end result being three totally unique custom interpretations of the Scout Bobber. While Keino Sasaki and Satya Kraus carry long-standing reputations forged through years within the customization and aftermarket industry, skateboard icon Steve Caballero has seen his profile increase steadily within the motorcycle community thanks to his love for vintage American v-twins and his participation in festivals such as Wheels & Waves.

“I’ve long been a fan of Indian and the incredible history, legacy and influence the iconic brand holds within the motorcycle industry,” said Caballero. “I couldn’t be more excited to be working with Indian, collaborating with my friends at Roland Sands Design in creating a version of the Scout Bobber that is uniquely my own.”

The Brooklyn Invitational is a motorcycle, photography and music showcase in the heart of New York City. Builders appear by invitation only. Hosted at Root Studios, doors open on Sept. 9 from 1-11pm ET and tickets run for $15.

Learn more about Indian Motorcycle and the Scout Bobber by visiting Indianmotorcycle.com and Facebook, Twitter and Instagram social media channels. To learn more and purchase tickets for the Ninth Annual Brooklyn Invitational Custom Motorcycle Show visit brooklyninvitational.com.

NEWS FROM MOTORCYCLING PROFILING PROJECT– Police in Texas Pressuring Bars to Ban “Motorcycle Colors”

Motorcyclists from Texas and around the US, many wearing motorcycle-related patches and colors, regularly visit public establishments and bars in San Marcos, Texas.

Recently, the San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) made a prejudicial recommendation to downtown San Marcos businesses to implement a broad policy of discrimination against any individual wearing motorcycle-related insignia or colors.

These recommendations amount to coercive pressure from a government actor to implement policies of discrimination. It is settled law that motorcycle patches and colors are Constitutionally protected by the 1st Amendment from acts of government discrimination. Prohibiting individuals from expressing themselves with patches or insignia exposes the government to liability under 42 USC §1983.

No agent of the government may pressure or coerce any establishment to impose a dress code that prohibits attendees from wearing clothing displaying the name or symbols associated with a motorcycle organization.

The Motorcycle Profiling Project (MPP), an organization representing the interests of motorcyclists in Texas and across America, is requesting that the San Marcos PD cease and desist from any further discriminatory recommendations relating to motorcycle clubs and has sent the following letter:

Dear Chief Stapp,

Recently, the San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) issued a prejudicial recommendation to downtown San Marcos businesses to implement a broad policy of discrimination against any individual wearing motorcycle-related insignia or colors. These recommendations amount to coercive pressure from a government actor to implement policies of discrimination. It is settled law that motorcycle patches and colors are Constitutionally protected by the 1st Amendment from acts of government discrimination.

No agent of the government may recommend, pressure or coerce any establishment to impose a dress code that prohibits attendees from wearing clothing displaying the name or symbols associated with a motorcycle organization. The Motorcycle Profiling Project (MPP), an organization representing the interests of motorcyclists in Texas and across America, is requesting that the San Marcos PD cease and desist from any further discriminatory recommendations relating to motorcycle clubs and issue a statement informing the public based on the attached analysis. The MPP looks forward to your response and resolution of this issue.

UNCLE MONKEY ON SWITCHING GEARS–
Years ago my wife and I spent $20 each to go look at a Monet and Van Gogh paintings at an art gallery. Chances are you replied with only one of two responses – Wow! Or Why? It is that response that threatens to tear apart the country.

But before we go much further we have to switch gears first. Like most of my readers I love riding motorcycles. A perfect Saturday is spent riding across this great country leaving our faces wind burnt, dusty and dirty. We think nothing of dropping $20 on a new doodad for the bike. We ride hundreds if not thousands of miles to ride the Black Hills.

We trust and understand other riders. We’re there to help and protect someone on the side of the road. No man left behind whether it is a Harley, Honda or KTM.

People who don’t ride don’t understand. Motorcycles are dangerous and we’re organ donors. They can’t fathom spending a day just driving from one point to another. We shrug them off. If we have to explain it, they won’t understand. We’ve all had that conversation a million times and all we can do is shake our heads at them and tell them that they are the ones missing out.

That doesn’t mean we don’t understand what they are talking about. We’ve all seen tragic motorcycle accidents. We’ve been caught in a Dakotas hailstorm wishing we were safe and dry inside a car. We understand and appreciate our caged friends we just wish they could just understand us.

Now back to my original statement about how you responded – Wow! or Why? Chances are if you replied wow you’re from the city. If you replied why you’re probably from the rural areas of the country. It is often refereed as the cultural divide in the country.

The 2016 US election broke the country down into most city folk voted democrat while the rural areas voted for Trump. For them they raised up and helped to protect the country, helping to make the country great again. They shake their heads at the liberals living in the cities letting immigrants move in, letting men wear dresses, and talking about society evolving. Liberals don’t understand how dangerous the world is and how dangerous “those” people are. Why they would rather cut your head off then look at you.

You see, in the cultural divide of the country city dwellers are the motorcyclists and the rural people are everyone telling us how dangerous it is. But we have weighed those risks and the rewards and chose that lifestyle.

We say hi to Muhammad at the convenience store. Aadarsh coaches our kids sport team. Michelle at the office was Michael until last summer and still makes the best seven-layer taco dip for the Super Bowl.

We argue with Doug and Gerry in the shower at the gym about whether Lebron or Jordan is the GOAT and Doug is still wrong. They are the people we meet and talk to every day. From the conman standing on the corner selling a too good to be true deal on whatever to the kid painted silver pretending to be a robot we know who they are and what they are trying to accomplish.

We understand the importance of the symphony whether we go or not and why someone would pay $20 to look at two pictures worth over $30,000,000. Just like riding a motorcycle sometimes things do go wrong but we’d never trade the thousand good days to avoid possibly having one bad one.

But that don’t mean we don’t understand the rural way of life. We appreciate early mornings fly-fishing in a river. We’re envious of watching sunsets from a tailgate and the value of family and friends.

In the end all I’m saying is if I have to explain it you’ll never understand.

-bad Uncle Monkey

I don’t think I agree with the above. I would think bikers would rather ride free of regulations, helmet laws, anti-tampering laws, and more and more EPA regs. They want to go their way and live life without undue regulation or mandatory anything. So, what does that make us?

TOP 1 ACK ATTACK PILOT ROCKY ROBINSON READY FOR 400 MPH

This Is It Says The World’s Fastest Motorcyclist

“This is it,” exclaims Rocky Robinson from his high altitude training in the Colorado Rockies. “It has taken an incredible amount of team work, logistics and cooperation, but now we can break the record.” The TOP 1 ACK ATTACK is headed to Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, for the Top of the World Landspeed Trial on August 3-8, 2017. The goal is to exceed 400 mph and break the team’s own longstanding LSR mark.

“I am so excited to be going to Bolivia,” says the world’s fastest motorcyclist. “To be honest, the last few years we ran at Bonneville were nothing but disappointment. We would go there and haven’t been able to push to the speed that we wanted to run and I haven’t felt safe or comfortable.” The diminishing salt and wet conditions have prevented The TOP 1ACK ATTACK team from challenging their 376.363 mph LSR mark set in 2010.

“Records are made to be broken — especially Land Speed Records,” claims Robinson. “The TOP 1 ACK ATTACK team is headed to the best salt in the world.” The nearly 12,000 feet (3,656 meters) above sea level elevation of the Salar de Uyuni also offers the least amount of aerodynamic drag the team has ever run in. “On paper we should be able to get this done, but it is such a hard thing to do.” Which might explain why Rocky’s record hasn’t been seriously challenged since 2010. “It’s never been that easy.” he says.

At least with all the prior world record attempts at Bonneville, the team could call somebody and have them FedEx something the next morning or fly back to San Jose, get something and be back in three or four hours. “It is a huge task… there is so much money involved, so much logistics involved, so much team work and coordination from everyone to get this done,” says Robinson.

He knows what he is talking about, as the former speedway motorcycle racer has set the LSR as the world’s fastest motorcyclist on three separate occasions. On September 3, 2006, Rocky rode the TOP 1 ACK ATTACK to a motorcycle land-speed record of 342.797 mph. In 2007 he tried to better his speed, but crashed at speeds in excess of 320 mph and rolled 16 times! Robinson returned to Bonneville in 2008 and piloted TOP 1 ACK ATTACK to a second world record of 350.884 mph. On September 25, 2010, for the third time in four years, Robinson set the LSR that has held off all challengers for the past seven years.

“In Bonneville you only have a limited amount of run-up, but at Salar de Uyuni we can run a 20 mile course,” said builder/visionary Mike Akatiff. “So we can run 10 miles up to the timing lights, but you can only run the motor so hard, for so long. It is going to be very, very tough on the motor.” TOP 1 ACK ATTACK is powered by two 1300cc Suzuki Hayabusa engines.

“The Suzuki is a very rugged motor,” added Akatiff. “I am really impressed with the new Hayabusa engine. How hard can we run and for how long… that is all part of the equation determining how fast we can go and something we are going to have to find out.” Adding to the horsepower equation is the Garret turbocharger/intercooler that force-feeds 35 lbs. of boost into the system, generating 900+ horsepower!

“At the extreme conditions we are pushing our engines, having the right lubricant means everything,” says Robinson. “Engine failures, overheating, seizures… all those things happen from pushing to this type of extreme, but we’ve never experienced any of these issues. TOP 1 has been phenomenal. We’ve never had a lubrication breakdown issue to this point and I don’t expect to see that any time in the future.”

This is the opportunity of a life time, claimed Robinson before heading to Bolivia. “It is one shot… we’re going to take it and hopefully come out on top of the Top of the World Landspeed Trial.”

Michael and Suzanne Hupy to be Honored as 2017 “Parents of the Year”
(GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —
The personal injury law firm of Hupy and Abraham, S.C. is proud to announce that firm president Attorney Michael Hupy and his wife, Suzanne, will be honored as the 35th annual COA Youth & Family Centers’ “Parents of the Year” on August 22 at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Linda Gorens Levey and Michael Levey will also be honored at this year’s event.

Every year, COA honors two Milwaukee couples for their dedication to family and extraordinary leadership in the community. Michael and Suzanne have been longtime champions for several community organizations for many years.

They are the parents of two adult children, Rex and Maxine Hupy. Rex is currently a practicing attorney in New York City at a 900 man corporate firm and Maxine is a professional dancer and actress who has worked with Grammy Award-winning musical stars such as CeeLo Green.

Suzanne, a philanthropist in her own right, spends a significant amount of time supporting numerous organizations. She and Attorney Hupy have had her mother’s home showcased for the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse and she personally volunteers with groups she highly values, such as arts programs.

As president of Hupy and Abraham, S.C., Attorney Hupy has built the largest personal injury firm in the state of Wisconsin, which has expanded to 11 offices in three states with nearly 200 employees.

Attorney Hupy has exclusively practiced personal injury law for several decades, and has recovered many multimillion dollar cases — including a $9,500,000 slip and fall case, which was the largest verdict in a slip and fall case at the time. Attorney Hupy has achieved the prestigious AV Preeminent Judicial rating from Martindale-Hubbell — the highest possible peer review rating in legal ability and ethical standards.

The firm has conducted many campaigns to raise safety awareness including Yield to Pedestrians, “DNT TXT N DRV” and Watch for Motorcycles. Over 1,000,000 bumper stickers and promotional items have been distributed in support of these campaigns, which have also been viewed over 10 million times on television PSAs and billboards in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa.

Attorney Michael Hupy has been a guest expert on local television programs to spread awareness about various safety issues, including pedestrian safety. The firm has won many community and legal awards and was recently named “Best Personal Injury Law Firm” by Wisconsin Law Journal readers.

Attorney Hupy has used his business success and resources to help others in need however he can over the years. He has been a presence in a number of legal organizations throughout southeastern Wisconsin, trying to make access easier for those in need. Over the last three years, his firm has donated over $500,000 to hundreds of organizations.

“I’d rather save lives than have more clients. My family and the community are two of the most important things to me. I have been committed to supporting both and aiding them toward maximizing their potential. We are so gratified to have been selected by COA for this great honor.”

Hupy and Abraham, S.C.

Founded in 1969 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, personal injury law firm Hupy and Abraham, S.C. has a proven record of success with large settlements in serious cases, collecting over a billion dollars for more than 70,000 satisfied clients. The firm has a long-established reputation of providing sound legal representation to accident victims, securing fair compensation for its clients and giving back to the community.

I can testify: Mike is a helluva guy and supported clubs, motorcycle rights and anything on two wheels for decades. Helluva guy.–Bandit

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY OPEN CONSTANTLY– Eight times this month, my blind uncle has fallen out of the tree in his garden. Three or four times, he’s fallen off the neighbors’ extension ladder — and twice he’s got trapped under a car.

Today, though, he got stuck in a gap in the neighbor’s fence, and the stress of trying to extricate himself, did him in. This has caused me a major headache, since it happened so close to Independence Day.

Not only do I have to arrange the funeral and everything, I’ve got to find a new home for his guide-cat.

STURGIS MUSEUM NEWS: FLAT TRACK IS THE REAL THING–

Coca Cola Supports Russ Brown Pappy Hoel Speed Classic In Sturgis

The Pappy Hoel Speed Classic presented by Russ Brown returns to the same historic dirt track where it all began back in 1938. And just like the first flat track race organized by the local motorcycle dealer and area business, the Speed Classic roars back into downtown Sturgis backed by Coca-Cola and area convenience and grocery stores.

Stop by Rapid City and Black Hills area stores for a chance to win a Family Fun 4-Pack of 4 VIP passes for the Speed Classic and other prizes.

Set for August 3-5, 2017 at the Meade County Fairgrounds in Sturgis, The Russ Brown Pappy Hoel Speed Classic kicks off a full week of racing during this year’s Rally.

Following the Speed Classic, The Spirit Of Sturgis Antique Motorcycle Races (open to pre-1970s vintage bikes) take place on Monday August 7 (gates open at 4 pm). Fans are invited to an after party and vintage bike show immediately following the antique races on Monday evening at 7 p.m. at the historical Sturgis Half Mile track.

Tuesday, August 8 the Sturgis Vintage Gypsy Run heads over to Black Hills Speedway for the American Flat Track Pro Half Mile and then Wednesday is the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Also evolving is the Sturgis Block Party fueled by Monster. For the first time this year, the merchants on Main Street have teamed up with the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Monster Energy to host a week-long party right in the heart of downtown. “Monster Girls, motorcycles, music and more, all fueled by Monster… it should be a heck of a party,” says Tsujikawa.

The bands go live at 5 p.m. starting August 4th and running every day through August 12th. Musical acts include Penrose, American Hitmen, Ginger And The Gents, October Rage (all the way from Australia), Chasin’ Mason and JagerTown. Best of all, there is no charge to see any of these acts on the Hot Bike Stage at the Museum.

“In the spirit of Pappy Hoel the Speed Classic is the perfect way to start the 77th Sturgis Rally, but it is only part of the program,” she notes. “Come for the races and stay for the party!” Displays, demo rides, swap meet and more are being hosted by the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum throughout the week, culminating with Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony presented by Strider Sports.

The Induction is being held August 8th at the Lodge at Deadwood in Deadwood, South Dakota. Breakfast tickets are available for a $40 donation, tables of eight for $400. Tickets are available by calling the Museum at 605.347.2001 or they can be purchased online at:

Five Benefits of Concealed Carry Permits–

We will take a look at the 5 biggest benefits to carrying a concealed carry permit or license regardless if your state is Unrestricted, Shall Issue or May Issue for concealed carry. Unrestricted states still offer licenses for those who wish to apply, and those licenses provide advantages to firearm owners.

1. Licenses put police officers at ease

Many firearm owners carry a weapon in their vehicle(s) for protection while on the roadways and around town. Get pulled over by a police officer and he or she may ask if you have a firearm in your car. Answer truthfully. In unrestricted firearm states, the police officer cannot lawfully confiscate the gun from you, but the presence of a firearm can affect the traffic stop because the officer is unaware of your criminal history. Showing the officer a concealed carry permit shows that you have undergone the necessary background checks, and for the state to reasonably believe that you are a law-abiding citizen and are trustworthy enough to carry firearms. If you are pulled over with a gun in the car and have a concealed license, consider giving the officer both your driver’s license and your concealed carry license together, immediately putting to bed any concern the officer may have over your firearm. Some states require you inform the officer immediately that you have a license and are armed.

2. Licenses help when openly carrying around uninformed people

Many firearm owners openly carry where laws allow for it. While open carry is a perfectly legitimate way to carry a firearm, it may also arouse suspicion among people who are generally uninformed about firearms and afraid when they see one. They may call the police and report the fact that you are carrying a weapon, and police departments are obligated to respond to the incident and start asking questions. So long as the laws allow for open carry and no other laws are being broken, the firearm owner will be okay. However, displaying a concealed carry license to the officer is an extra level of protection against aggressive law enforcement that may want to give you trouble for openly carrying a weapon. Effectively, the concealed carry license tells the officer “back off, I’m good.”

3. Licenses allow firearm owners to carry in more public areas

Many states that do not require licenses to own and carry firearms still restrict where owners can carry their firearms – like schools, courthouses, national parks and restaurants. For example, the state of Arizona allows concealed carry license holders to possess weapons within 1000 feet of schools. Without a license, however, such possession is unlawful. Arizona also allows license holders to carry firearms into bars and other restaurants that serve alcohol, so long as the firearm owner is not consuming alcohol. Unlicensed firearm owners, however, cannot legally possess firearms in these establishments. Consult your local state’s concealed carry laws for specifics on your state’s licensing details.

4. Licenses educate firearm owners on laws that could save their lives

The process to obtain state concealed carry licenses is more than a simple background check and proficiency test (in some states). Typically, those interested in a license will go to an 8-hour class where experienced instructors will not only teach what licenses provide for state residents, but also the laws of the state and when deadly force can be used. For example, is shooting at a fleeing carjacker considered “self-defense” in your state and an appropriate situation in which to use deadly force?

In Arizona (and most other states), it isn’t – because the carjacker is no longer threatening your life or property. Is unholstering your weapon considered “brandishing” and punishable under the law? The concealed carry license class will teach you what you need to know to keep yourself out of jail if you ever need to use your weapon in a defensive situation. Know your laws.

5. Licenses make it easier to buy firearms

All states require simple background checks each and every time a weapon is purchased due to the laws and regulations of the ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms). However, several states, including Arizona, wave the background check requirement if the purchaser has a concealed carry license.

States do this because the holder of the license has already undergone the required background check in the process of obtaining the license. This makes your next trip to the gun store smoother and quicker. You will still need to fill out some paperwork, but waiting for a background check may no longer be required. Again, consult your state’s regulations for specific details on how a license affects your next gun purchase in your state.

In closing, if your state requires the possession of a concealed carry license before owning and carrying a firearm, then you will need one to lawfully carry your weapon anyway. But if your state does not require a license, still consider getting one.

As we have discussed, licenses include many benefits that can both keep firearm owners safe and more trustworthy around police and teach the laws of the state and what you need to know to keep yourself out of jail.

MILLENNIALS are killing the beer industry– Millennials aren’t drinking enough beer to keep brands afloat.

According to CNBC , Goldman Sachs downgraded both Boston Beer Company and Constellation Brand on the data that younger consumers aren’t drinking as much alcohol as older generations, and the ones that do prefer wine and spirits.

“We view the shift in penetration and consumption trends as driven by a shift in preferences in the younger cohorts,” Goldman Sachs Chief Analyst Freda Zhuo wrote.

Beer penetration fell 1% from 2016 to 2017 in the US market, while both wine and spirits stood unmoved, according to Nielsen ratings.

Goldman Sachs now expects the overall beer market in the US to decline 0.7% in 2017. It downgraded Boston Beer Company from neutral to sell and Constellation Brands from buy to neutral.

HOW PHONY COPS got $1.2 million in military weapons–

An extraordinary Government Accountability Office sting operation revealed that the U.S. Department of Defense continues to play fast and loose with a program to transfer surplus military weaponry to law enforcement agencies, despite years of controversy over the dangers of militarizing local police departments or allowing weapons to fall into the hands of terrorists.

The GAO, the nonpartisan congressional watchdog best known for trenchant audits of government finances and waste, set up a phony law enforcement agency – complete with a bogus website – to see how easy it would be to obtain surplus, military-grade equipment through a law enforcement support program.

The fake operation claimed that it did high-level security and counterterrorism work and provided the Department of Defense with an address that led to an empty parking lot.

Related: 10 Military Weapons You Won’t Believe the Police Have Access To
Within a week, the phony law enforcement operation obtained over 100 items with an estimated value of $1.2 million, including night-vision goggles, simulated M-16A rifles and simulated pipe bombs, according to a GAO report. This was done with virtually no questions asked or any on-site inspection of the faux law enforcement operation.

Although the rifles and pipe bombs were simulated for military combat training operations, they can be easily converted to lethal weapons.

The report, issued last week, sharply criticized the Defense Logistics Agency, which oversees the Law Enforcement Support Office, for shoddy oversight that could enable arms and other military equipment to fall into the wrong hands.
For instance, DLA personnel have not routinely requested and verified the identification of individuals picking up “controlled” property (specific types of military equipment, defined here) or verifying the quantity of approved items prior to transfer.

Moreover, the DLA has not conducted a “fraud risk” assessment of the law enforcement support program.

“Without strengthening DLA and LESO program internal controls over the approval and transfer of controlled property to law enforcement agencies … DLA lacks reasonable assurance that it has the ability to prevent, detect, and respond to potential fraud and minimize associated security risks,” the report stated.

Zina Merritt, director of the GAO’s defense capabilities team, told the Marshall Project that the DLA failed to do any meaningful verification and mostly communicated with the GAO sting operation by email. “It was like getting stuff off of eBay,” Merritt said.

DLA officials say they have already taken some action and are planning additional steps to address the identified weaknesses in the verification process for its surplus controlled property program, according to the report. The Defense Department will also complete an internal fraud assessment by April 2018, according to the GAO.

THAT’S IT AS WE SCRAMBLE TO PREPARE FOR THE ROAD TO SD—
But before we do, we are working on several stories, techs and features for our readers. We don’t mess around or leave anyone hanging while we’re on the road.

I’m working on a new Girl of Bikernet, Chelsea, who is represented within the Sullen apparel brand.

I finished my bling bag for the Grease and Gears Cycle Source Show at the Iron Horse Saloon in Sturgis with this Chain Dragon.

I hope it works out for a trophy or something.

I’m also working on a Race Tech, Yelvington, Spectro Oils tech tip around Tileman James 1999 Dyna. We worked on it all day Saturday and he flew out of here like a bat outta hell. There’s a bunch coming as we head out, so Bikernet won’t slow down. Not for a minute.
