HARLEY-DAVIDSON INTRODUCES SOFTAIL SPECIAL EDITION FLEET MODELS–Heritage Softail Classic and Fat Boy Models Available for Police Officers, Firefighters and Shriners
MILWAUKEE (November 1, 2004) – Harley-Davidson Motor Company expands the Special Edition fleet offering with two Softail model updates:
FLSTC/I Heritage Softail Classic and FLSTF/I Fat Boy models. Both models are now available in Peace Officer and Firefighter Special Editions and in Shrine motorcycles.
The Peace Officer Special Edition Softail motorcycles are available in Dark Blue, with the unique, updated tank graphics. The Firefighter Special Edition Softail motorcycles feature updated tank graphics and are available in the new, Fire Engine Red paint. The Shrine Softail motorcycles are available in the standard Pleasure Colors along with Concord Purple (Jester members only) and Arctic White and feature the standard Pleasure graphics. The new Special Edition fleet motorcycles will be available starting January 3, 2005.
The addition of the Special Edition Softail models will expand the current Harley-Davidson Special Edition police line up to five models: FLHTCUI Ultra Classic Electra Glide, FLHTC/I Electra Glide Classic, FLHR/I Road King, FLSTC/I Heritage Softail Classic and FLSTF/I Fat Boy motorcycles.

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE DRAG TEAM ROLLS TO SEMI-FINALS IN LAS VEGAS–Tonglet Advances to Third Round, Hines Leads Qualifying and Keeps Points Lead
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 31, 2004) – Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines drag racing team rider GT Tonglet rode his Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod to the semi-final round of eliminations at the 4th Annual AC Delco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His teammate, Andrew Hines, led all qualifiers for the event, but missed a chance to clinch the Pro Stock Bike season points title when his engine faltered in the first round of eliminations. However, Hines still retains a 117-point lead over Antron Brown heading into the final NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event of the season, Nov. 11-14 in Pomona, Calif.
For the seventh time this season, Hines topped all other qualifiers in the NHRA Pro Stock Bike field. His run of 7.130 seconds at 185.10 mph also set a new Pro Stock Bike ET record for the track. Tonglet qualified fourth with a run of 7.185 seconds at 190.59 mph, a new track-record top speed for the class.
In the first round of eliminations on Sunday, Tonglet (7.266/177.67) defeated Karen Stoffer (7.290/178.99). Hines (8.052/128.18) was leading Mike Berry (7.414/177.60) when his engine let go mid-run.
“We came here ready to wrap up the championship, but it just didn’t work out. We’ll be ready to get the job done at Pomona,” said Hines.
In round two, Tonglet (7.253/177.16) beat Matt Smith (7.275/181.76) and for the seventh consecutive NHRA event, a Screamin’ Eagle rider was in the semi-final round. Tonglet then lined up with Angelle Savoie, but her 7.241/178.71 run beat Tonglet’s 7.442/177.39 pass.
In the final, Chip Ellis (7.191/179.92) used his V-Twin Buell to defeat Savoie’s Suzuki (7.255/177.49) and take his first NHRA Pro Stock Bike win in just his third start.
US Army rider Antron Brown, who started the Las Vegas event in second place, 131 points behind Hines, advanced to the second round before losing to Ellis, and gained 14 points on Hines. Savoie, also with the US Army team, started the weekend 176 points behind Hines and gained 55 points on the Screamin’ Eagle rider.
Heading into the final event, Hines has 1,152 points, Brown is 117 points back in second with 1,035 points, and Savoie is 121 points behind Hines in third position with 1,031 points. With a potential 138 points available at Pomona, both Brown and Savoie still have a mathematical shot at the title.
“The team did well this weekend. Andrew was the top qualifier with a track record ET, and GT set the track record top speed and made the semi-final round,” said Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso. “We’re really looking forward to Pomona and the championship finale.”

BIKERNET GOES POSTAL–The US Postal Service created a stamp with a picture of Senator Hillary Clinton to honor her achievements as the First Lady of our nation. In daily use it was shown that the stamp was not sticking to envelopes.
This enraged Senator Clinton, who demanded a full investigation. After a month of testing, a special presidential commission made the following findings:
*The stamp was in perfect order.
*There was nothing wrong with the applied adhesive.
*People were spitting on the wrong side.
RACER’S CYCLE OF YOUTH RIPPED OFF–Sacramento, CA-Oct. 17by Felicia
Ray Wheeler’s been racing since the 1960’s when he came to Californiaafter serving in Viet Nam, so the October 16-17 drags weren’t his firstgo-round. It was, however, the first run for his 2002 specialconstruction, hand-built motorcycle. As a matter of fact, it had justknown life for one week before Ray loaded it up in the back of aSilverado pickup and headed for the Custom Chrome show in Morgan Hillfor it’s first introduction to the riding world.
The judges weren’timpressed enough to hand down an award to the 159 incher at that show,but when I saw it doing pre-trial burnouts here in Sacramento(with 190 horses to the rear wheel), it definitely caught my eye.It’s got that old skool, work horse appearance that I so love in ascreaming,rocket of a motorcycle. It’s kind of a cross between “sleeper” streetbike lookand a slightly understated racer, but with street tires and no tractionRay still turned in some impressive times of 124 mph and two runs of119 mph…in well under 12 seconds.
Ray’s next stop was to be Las Vegasas he sought to reclaim his youth astride his custom built steed,but Destiny had another plan.
On Sunday, October 17 some scum-sucking buckets of shit decided theywere entitled to the cherished motorcycle and Ray awoke to find an emptyspot where the truck had been parked at the Best Western in RanchoCordova. Besides the bike, the truck was loaded with tools, helmets, andassorted gear. He’d brought along a set of full leathers to be givenaway to someone who needed them, but he’d not yet found anyone they’dfit, so the thieves got those, too.
I’ve heard it said that you develop a deeper sense of what’simportant as you age, and it struck me that Ray Wheeler, at 60, has hitthat stride because his Zen-like attitude about the whole thingsurprised me. Hesaid he hoped that whoever ended up with the bike would have the heartto realize it was a special machine and not tear it apart.
There areonly 3 engines like it in the entire United States, so it’s not like aguy could just waltz up to a parts counter and buy a new bolt-on partfor it. Jim Bartlett from Beaverton, Oregon had come out of retirementto build the frame and had his name proudly displayed in copperpin-striping on the tanks. Ray shared that he hadn’t been able to sleepand had not yet told Jim about the theft, a call he was sorely dreading.He just couldn’t get his head around how someone could steal anotherman’s motorcycle anyway, but to take one of this caliber was just beyondcomprehension. The tone was one of disbelief, and rather than spewingvengeance or raging with hate, there was just a profound sense ofsadness and loss. (I, personally, found myself cursing the slime with apox to be carried for the next hundred generations, however!!) Ray saidthat if it had been a street bike, he’d just call the insurance companyand start all over, but this bike was a group effort, and represented agreat deal of pride irreplaceable by any coverage.
The police have given little hope of ever seeing the motorcycleagain, but the truck was found 3 days later in Citrus Heights…abusedbut drivable. Ray hasn’t given up hope, and continues to hold out forthe one phone call that might lead him back to his beloved fountain ofyouth. Here a quick intro to the news cause the faster I get it posted, the faster I can get back to work on the building. As you probably already know, Bandit has taken a real job with Primedia as Editorial Director of three titles, Hot Bike, Hot Rod Bike and Street Chopper. This has him leaving the headquarters at the crack of dawn and coming home after dark. Not to say that Bikernet wasn’t a real job, cause it was, but from home. However, Primedia came calling with a challenge that peaked that man’s interest like only a woman or motorcycles could, the challenge being – run a bunch of magazines (Bandit run a magazine?). He rose to the challenge and out of retirement, out of the headquarters he went. Hence, real job = commute.
Hang in there with us as it will be an adjustment for us personally and professionally. Primedia wants to take over Bikernet, but we’re working out the terms. If it happens we hope to deliver more info and stories than ever before. In the meantime we promise to keep the good stuff coming and remain as interactive as possible.
Here’s a few shots of what’s been going on around the headquarters and all at a snails pace I might add. The carpet & floor guy is waiting on the carpenter, the carpenter is waiting on the electrician, the electrician is waiting on who knows what. And so it goes… And you’re waiting on the news. Take a look at the progress, and then enjoy the news.

I discovered beautiful hardwood under 77-years of old tile and linoleum. Bandit had a cow the night I peeled it all up cause it was the only good bathroom upstairs. But after four days of my son and I sanding and varnishing, he?s happy now. I know, hardwood in the bathroom. I just couldn?t cover it back up.

I would like to say fromexperience that an reflective is a must have for every rider. there’stwo things I never ride with out my helmet and my reflective safetyvest. As far as safety goes the reflective vest is the more effective ofthe two. every day there are fourwheelers that spot me because of thevest that wouldn’t have otherwise. There is simply no way a driver canget away with saying she or he didn’t see you when you’re wearing areflective safety vest.
When it comes to cops and wearing a reflective vest, itwill work in your favor, because the cop will automatically assume thatyou’re a conservative responcible rider, and keep on going with outgiving you second glance.
I really do speak from experience when I talk about a reflectivesafety vest. I ride a gas powered bicycle, and I really do mean ride. Iaverage about 100 miles a week, and that’s just my around town miles.When the weather is good and the mood strikes me, I comonly will go forrides out in the country, and I will easly do that much in a day.
Regardless of your wheels Every one on two wheels has on thing incomon. We’re invisble to the fourwheelers out there simply because theydon’t care enough to look for us. A safety vest might not look cool,but wearing one will save your life every time you wear one. Because itforces the fourwheelers out there to notice that hey you’re on the roadto.

OL’ SKOOL CHOPPER SHOW AT LAST RESORT–The crowds may have been down in Daytona Beach this year at Biketoberfest but you would never know it if you were at the Last Resort Bar in Port Orange for this years Ol Skool Chopper Show.
The place was packed when I got there at noon and they kept coming in until I left around 5:00. By then bikes were lined up and down US1. This event continues to grow year after year as it is fun and features some real scooters that get ridden regular. No trailer queens allowed!
Bill Lane of Choppers Inc. is a regular there and when he and Paul Cox showed up things heated up even more. Billy spent a lot of time with people and also signing just about any thing you wanted him to.
The crowd is a big part of what make this place so enjoyable. Their lay back attitude and not trying to out do each other with the latest biker (?) fashions, just wanting to hang out, enjoy each other and what was going on.
The Last Resort is a Biker Bar year round so if you are into that kind of thing, like cold beer at reasonable prices and getting out of the down town bullshit stop by next time you are in the area.
Also be sure to stop by for the next Ol School Chopper Show. I will be there!

PETER PENZ ORIGINAL CUSTOMBIKES– organized a charity ride as part of the European Bike Week held in Faak, Austria, in September.Many bikes, riders and passengers joined in an impressive cavalcade.
The ride finished at the casino at Velden, Austria, where the latest frame from Penz was unveiled – the ‘Freaky Moto Lowrider’.A raffle and auction were part of the entertainment.At Velden the prizes were awarded and the bidding took place for a number of valuable items on offer.
These included a complete bike painting by Pfeil Design, a motorcycle hire voucher from Desert Riders and a cruise from DFDS Seaways. There were also donations from other well-respected names such as Custom Chrome, W&W, Zodiac and M?ller Motorcycles among many othersThe total amount raised on the occasion was ?2,199 (about US$2,700).
The charity chosen to benefit was the Weisser Ring, an organization that looks after the victims of crime.

BIKERNET CARIBBEAN REPORT–Back from Biketoberfest and it was a pretty good time. But as soon as I got back, and I mean as soon, it was full dive into the shop. We have a bunch of shit going on, a couple more trips before the end of the year and the Puerto Rico bike week end, which I’m putting together two brand new (old) bobbers just for that. Today was my dad?s birthday so we stopped the whole mayhem and got to wish him a very Happy Birthday. I know he reads this, so here we go..Happy Birthday Guti once more.
As always I spent time with my friends. We did not do much besides hanging out, visit other friends (who happened to be working) and hung out at Lollipops. Mucho thanks goes once more to all at da’ pops. Those guys treat us like kings, all the time, every time. If you happen to be by Daytona, that place is a must stop. One funny thing happened on the plane; some guys from PR were heading the same way and they were wondering why I was flying by myself. I guess it seemed weird to them, but my answer was quick and simple; I have as many if not more friends in Daytona right now, than at home so I don’t need an entourage. Hank and Josh from Young Choppers brought my bobber over (it’s a full story on that one) and we got to hang out. Lucky me, as soon as they left I got to hang out with two very beautiful girls from Georgia, not a bad trade. Two ugly guys for two cute chicks. I was practicing my southern accent the whole week (to no avail).
There was a lot going on, but I guess I’ll save all that for the report, although I had a good conversation with Greg Friend from Street Chopper about bikes, history and Master Builders, as well as deep as you can get while naked chicks roam around. You all know that I’m always asking how Master builders become master builders, well, now I believe it’s just a name a certain magazine used to recognize who was in the higher echelons of building, nothing special, just a noun, just a space in the totem, a step in the ladder. If I’m better known than the next builder, that might get me the moniker of master builder, as simple as that, or maybe not.
I also have a story of the short trip we took with Michael Lichter for the Dave Mann memorial, but that goes in the report as well, keep your eyes peeled. It includes some guys on TV, some builders from the Journey museum and a very quick escape, and my bobber refusing to start at 7:00 am (a feat in itself, since anyone that knows me knows that 11 is my wake up call time).
Without getting too carried away, the bobbers are looking very cool. Too much work, way too much with other stuff that needs to be done, and to top it off the first Winter season swell has arrived. Every morning I look out my window and see the reefs exploding in white water. So with pain I head to the shop instead of surfing, you wanna play you gotta get your ass and work triple for the time lost, such it is.
The Biketoberfest photos are up on my website, the tickets for California and Atlanta are at hand, and we just keep on working ’till the very wee hours of the morning trying to get it all ready before Thanksgiving.
Election day is near as well as Halloween, no partying for this sucker, but again you do what you got to do.

BOB T. BRINGIN’ UP THE PAST–I built this in ’71. Yes, it looks like a Dick Allen Springer, but it’s not. It was built by the machinist that Dick worked for…The shop was on Artesia in Redondo Beach.
Dick had his shop down the street…Arm & Hammer, then he moved to Harbor City off the freeway if my memory is correct.
BRITISH INVASION ROCKS STURGIS–September 2004 — Calthorpe and Levis aren’t common household names for theaverage motorcyclist, and we’re really excited about that! Thanks to KennyPrice, of Samson Exhaust, these rare marques will be on exhibit at theSturgis Motorcycle Museum for one year.
Truth be told, Kenny has loaned themuseum four of his rare British bikes. In addition to the 1926 Levis and1928 Calthorpe, the Museum is proud to exhibit a 1925 AJS and a 1925Douglas. All in excellent restored condition and each one an amazingexample of British ingenuity.
While the Levis (1911-1940) is a rather obscure name, its racing history islegendary. For many years Levis was one of England’s leading manufacturersof two-stroke machines, winning many races, including the 1922 LighweightTT.
Calthorpes history is less stellar, more like the “little engine that could”story. Also founded in 1911, Calthorpe had a bit of a rocky road inmanufacturing with many ups and even more downs. They were known forbuilding nice machines at reasonable prices. Just prior to the Birminghamfactory closing down in 1938, official prices for the fully equippedmachines ranged from ?47 for a 248 cc to ?54 for a 498 cc.
AJS was a family run business, beginning with the Stevens family (1909-1931)and in later years the Collier brothers of Matchless fame took control.Douglas was best known for their engines, flat-twins with cylinders mountedlongitudinally, designed to maintain a narrow profile.

STEALTH IS ON HIS OWN–Two weeks ago the dealership where I had worked for almost 10 years decided it was time that we went our separate ways. I was given a choice, as to whether to stay or not, which really was not a choice at all. The choice was pretty much already made for me. To sum it all up, it was a squeeze play and I was the one who got squeezed. That is all I will say without going into the details of the dirty deeds.
So what does the future hold for me? Well I guess that is anyone’s guess. Everything is up in the air right now. I will stay in the motorcycle industry, and I have been kicking a couple of ideas around. People have told me that, “When one door closes another one opens.” So I’m looking for that next door to open.
My time at the dealership was not bad, matter of fact I got to meet a lot of great people, go to places, learn the business and support the community. Do I have a bad taste in my mouth about the way things were handled? Sure I do, but it will fade.
I have been dealt a whole lot harder blow than this in my life, and I will make it through this time. You see in life, “It is not how many times you get knocked down, it is how handle getting back on your feet!”So right now I am taking some time to clear the cobwebs and polish my plans for the future.
As I close this chapter I’m looking forward to turning the page to start the next one, opening my own shop, building bikes or who knows?

I spotted a solo seat mounted with a hiem joint at the recent World Championship show at Custom Chrome. I thought the idea was hot for my Bikernet Sturgis 2005 Project bike until I thought about it. It would pivot back and forth, not a safe operation.
So I called the Devil in Houston and he sent me these shots of Joe T’s bike and how he handled the seat mount. He’s got the right idea. I hate to admit the Devil was right, but what can I do?

NRHS SETS TWO RECORDS AT 2004 BONNEVILLE WORLD FINALS–WENDOVER, UTAH ? Fresh off of claiming the ?Fastest American V-Twin? title at September?s Speed Trials by BUB, NRHS V-Twin Performance pulled off a land speed racing double play at the SCTA/BNI ?World Finals? held at the Bonneville Salt Flats October 13-16, claiming both records they came to contest.
Team NRHS rider Timbo Horton joined the exclusive 200mph club on the NRHS 1650cc 1995 Buell S2. Horton?s qualifying pass of 205.218 mph and return pass of 206.066 mph averaged out to 205.642 mph on the old 202.989 mph record running in the 1650cc MPS-PF class.
The S2 is powered by a set of NRHS-prepped STD Heads, Axtell aluminum cylinders, and NRHS Hurricane Forged Pistons.From there Horton piloted the NRHS 1350cc 1996 Buell S1 into the record books. This week’s paint job belongs to Paul Camesi of Pittsburgh, PA. He had me dothese very different flames and wanted an eagle in there somewhere. Well Ipulled it off and I can’t wait to see this thing together. My hubby Jim isbuilding this wild creation and did a fantastic job building this radicaltank. When we started this project we weren’t sure where it would go. We hada mishmash of parts of work with and it looks like it will come togetherinto one evil ride.
And speaking of radical choppers, Jim has decided to sell his new bike. Whenhe was building this, the fourth Crazy Horse Chopper, he said he wanted tokeep it for a year or so, no matter what I said.
“I’m sick of selling thesebikes that ride so good. I want to keep one and ride it for a while, ya gotthat?!” This has always been a sore spot in our relationship. Jim loves, Imean loves, building bikes. If he’s not building a bike, then he is onemiserable dude to be around. And building bikes takes money.
I ain’t sellingmy sporty. And I have to keep my gooseneck. It’s used to publicize mypaint and no matter what, it’s the bike I want to keep forever. And I amnot a bank, no matter what my Victoria’s Secret bills say. So I play themean wife and try to make him sell his bikes. So I was shocked when he came in onenight and announced he was selling his chopper. We have an evil little bobbergoing together now, but he now has an idea for another long chopper. Thisone with a 250 tire. He wants to build two bikes at once here at the ChopperFarm.

I have to save it as I leave for Vegas in 4 days. I’m heading out tothe SEMA and NACE trade shows. That’s why I’m typing this on Monday as nextThursday night, I’ll be busy finishing loading up the truck. That’s right,I’m driving out. More details from the road. I have a feeling I won’t begetting much sleep next week.
I finally got the proof version of my book. Looks like the crew atMotorbooks did a very cool job of laying it out. It was hard work for themas I had a vision of what I wanted it to look like and it was something thatisn’t usually done. I have to go through it over the next 2 weeks andcorrect anything that needs it. Lotta frickin’ pages, now that I have it inmy hands. MIAMI MOTORCYCLE SHOW 2004–April 17-18, 2004 ?Miami, Fl. It might be the year-around sunny climate or the sexy women dressed only in a micro-thin string catching rays on the beach or the beat-pounding night-life of South Beach that attracts thousands every year to Miami, but last fall it was all that with a V-twin in between.
Builders, manufacturers and vendors spanning from the US discovered why Miami is such a hot-spot when you mix the motorcycle world to the hot, exotic lifestyle of the magic city, in three words: the ?Bling Bling.?
Miami, an international city, is home to celebrities from NFL linebackers to Pop Divas and Blockbuster actors. And with such energy in the air, the show was no doubt the semblance of the city?s essence. V-twins, choppers, crotch rockets, all types of two and three machines at the forefront of the tropical city lured 30,000 enthusiasts to see the latest and greatest in the industry.
Motorcycle celebrities that have gained worldwide recognition from Discovery Channel Biker-build off were present displaying their bikes, signing autographs and talking to their fans about what drives their creative designs. The late Indian Larry, Eddie Trotta, Paul Yaffe, Roger Bourget, and Dave Perewitz were on hand for the enthusiastic visitors? questions and compliments.
Covering 150,000 sq. ft., 124 exhibitors had a chance to build a new following and customer base in an untapped market for the industry. Plus, riders and builders had a chance to make their mark in the Miami Motorcycle Show bike show contest that received over 100 contestants.
2005 is coming just around the corner and preparations are being made to break last year?s record, and bring the best of the best builders in an all out competition to be dubbed the East Coast Champion at the 4th annual event. Here’s the deal. I’ve been hired by Primedia to take the position of Editorial Director of Street Choppers, Hot Rod Bikes and the Editor in Chief of Hot Bike. The plan includes licensing Bikernet.com to the group. I may need your help to see that this aspect happens.
I’m not going to bail on you guys. I hope to fold material from all these books into Bikernet and make sure that all our readers get the best of all worlds. You may need to be patient with me through this process, but at the end of the day my goal is to bring you the best service, the best entertainment and the best access to informations and products. Hot Bike is destined to bring the best of the Biker world to print. Hot Rod Bikes goal will include publishing the best performance and tech with the hottest technical coverage in the industry, and finally, you’ve read HORSE, but you ain’t seen nothing until you read Street Choppers and find yourself face to face with the new school/old school controversy. You want to build a chopper, this book will show you the way, old school or hot billet performance.
And my hope is that each element of these books will be covered on Bikernet. So goddamnit, I don’t need to pack my lunch tin until Monday, so let’s hit the news:
BUFFALO CHIP AT BIKETOBERFEST–The Biker Chip from Sturgis South Dakota came to Daytona for Biketoberfest and opened at the famous Speedway. All sorts of stories and reports were running around about the wild parties of Sturgis. They included nudity, bikini, wet t-shirt, no shirt contests, and pickle lickin competition.
The speedway officials promised community leaders none of that, and as far as I know there wasn’t. I know I didn’t see any of it when I attended Friday evening. Of course there were members of the Sheriff’s Department on hand to make sure nothing was going on that might offend any of the do-gooders in the community who want to Clean Up The Party Image of the worlds most famous beach.
I’d describe it as a concert attended by Bikers and alcohol was available. As opposed to some of the large bars where obviously alcohol was the main draw and the offered musical entertainment. Like most of the places in the area you could ride your motorcycle into the event and party.
I liked it. It was a change of pace for me. It wasn’t crowded, but then again a lot of places weren’t. With the overall attendance down it was hard to tell if it was due to the venue or the event. The Buffalo Chip owner Rod Woodruff said, “We’re just a bunch of mature people who want to talk with friends, drink beer and listen to good music.”
It cost $20.00 dollars to get in and that included all the draft beer you could drink, well up to the time you showed you were having too much. You could also sleep on site, if you wanted to or if you had too much to drink. Add a well known musical group and it was a good deal.
I expect, as the word spreads, you’ll see this event grow.

ESTOK RIDES BUELL TO VICTORY AT F-USA THUNDERBIKE FINALE– Evo-Twin/Harding Harley-Davidson Team Riders Finish Season 1-2 in Points.
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Oct. 24, 2004) ? Evo-Twin Racing/Harding Harley-Davidson rider David Estok took the pole aboard a Buell Firebolt by cruising to an easy victory at the final Formula USA National Thunderbike race of the 2004 season at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The win was his third of the season and locked up his runner-up finish in the Thunderbike national championship.
Estok led all qualifiers with a 1:31.942 lap around the infield road course. Williams Harley-Davidson/Buell rider Randy Rega, also aboard a Buell Firebolt, was the second-fastest qualifier with a time of 1:32.583.
Estok?s Evo-Twin Racing/Harding Harley-Davidson teammate Bryan Bemisderfer qualified 10th aboard his Buell Firebolt, but was black-flagged on lap two of the race with a smoking exhaust. According to team owner Jeff Harding, no oil leak or other problem was discovered on Bemisderfer?s bike, but because he lost a lap in the pits, he did not return to the race. Estok roared off to a quick lead in the 12-lap race and was never challenged as he claimed his third Thunderbike win of the season.
Suzuki-mounted Motorcycle Performance rider Ed Key finished 4.705 seconds behind Estok after a race-long battle for second place with Evo-Twin Racing/Harding Harley-Davidson rider Tim Bemisderfer, who also rode a Buell Firebolt. Suzuki rider Michael Niksa was fourth, followed by Hoban Brothers Buell of Appleton rider Jeff Johnson on a Buell in fifth. Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider Walt Sipp was sixth on a Buell, followed by Joe Rozynski on a Kosco Harley-Davidson Buell Firebolt.

Despite not finishing the race, Bemisderfer had already clinched the Thunderbike championship with a win at the Las Vegas round Sept. 19.
?Another win by David is a great way to end a successful season for this team,? said team owner Jeff Harding. ?When we started the year, we were hoping we could go one-two in the championship with this pair of talented riders, and that?s just how it worked out.?
The Corning, N.Y.-based Evo-Twin Racing/Harding Harley-Davidson team won four of the eight races on the 2004 Formula USA Thunderbike schedule, with Estok and Bemisderfer placing first and second together at the Daytona and Las Vegas rounds. Bemisderfer won the title with 105 points; Estok followed in second place with 93 points. Johnson was third with 73 points.
?This was our team?s most successful season to date,? said Harding. ?Our riders got great support all year from crew chief Shannon Destasio and crew members Bill Ripley and Jim Lapey. We have not locked down our plans for next season, but we?d like to be back with both riders.?
The Formula USA National Thunderbike series is a horsepower-to-weight ratio restricted class, open to a variety of production-based motorcycles. Buell-mounted riders competing in the eight-event 2004 Thunderbike series raced for a share of the $70,500 contingency fund posted by Buell Motorcycle Company and Buell Riders Adventure Group (BRAG).

STATE INSTALLS METERED TRAFFIC LIGHTS ON I-95 ENTRY RAMPS– The Florida Department of Transportation is installing metered traffic lights on Interstate 95 ramps to manage traffic during rush hour.
The ramp metering system will be in operation from Ives Dairy Road to Northwest 62nd Street late next year, officials said. The system, in which traffic lights channel merging traffic, is being implemented to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes during rush hour, department officials said.
The system will incorporate meters to control merging traffic from the ramps to the highway. Sensors along the highway will measure gaps between vehicles and transmit the information to a center, where the traffic lights would be controlled.
During peak traffic hours, ramp metering can increase traffic from 1,400 automobiles per lane per hour to up to 2,200, according to US Department of Transportation statistics. In addition, meters can cut crashes up to 50% during the peak of rush hour, the federal department says.
About 220,000 vehicles enter the 11-mile section of I-95 daily, according to department records.

TUESDAY BIKETOBER FEST REPORT– I spent time with Berry Wardlaw, Covington & crew Tues. We will be working on tuning the engine on Wed. I will bring my lap top and show them the article on your site. I have some shots of the bike. It is a work of art.
Covington is interested in trying to get it on the cover of Hot Bike. Do you know what is going on over there? Did Frank or any one we know get the job?
There are not a lot of people in Daytona as yet. Berry had no problem finding a room but only until Thurs. It looks like that is when they are expecting people. I am Not Impressed with what is going on. But it is nice to be able to get around and also not have to wait in line for everything.

VICTORY CONNECTION FOR CUSTOM PARTS–I also have some good info for our buddy in Jeff sunny Baghdad. the bad news is the tolerances are too tight to install a bigger tire with the stock set up. BUT the good news is, I did find a good contact from the guy’s at Victory.
It seems there is a custom shop in their area that produces fat tire kits and other custom production components for Victory Motorcycles. They have an exchange program for most Victory models to reduce the wait time. I checked out their web site www.northstarcustomcycle.com, and they have some good looking stuff on their web site.
I also gave them a call and spoke with Mr. Peterson over the phone. They seem to be on the ball enough for me.

OIL UPDATE FROM BIKERNET–For 883cc and 1200 Sportster motorcycles, the AMSOIL Synthetic 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil is recommended for both the engine and the transmission.
On 1340 cc and 1450 cc models, the 20W-50 AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil is recommended for the engine crankcase, AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 Gear Lube for the transmission and AMSOIL 10W-40 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil for the chaincase.
These recommendations for the 1340 cc and 1450 cc are, in our opinion, superior to using a 20W-50 m/c oil in the engine, transmission and primary as H-D recommends with their new Syn3. If you choose to you certainly can use the AMSOIL 20W-50 motorcycle oil in the engine, transmission and primary as a replacement for the Syn3 (which is a 20W-50 m/c oil), however it is our recommendation that it is better to use the specific products outlined above for superior performance.
Gear Lubes have Extreme Pressure (EP) additives for superior protection of the gear surfaces while motor oils typically do not have EP additives since EP additives can be detrimental inside an engine. Therefore it is better to use gear lube in your transmission than motor oil.
The change interval specification on AMSOIL motorcycle oil and AMSOIL Super Motorcycle Oil Filters is 2 times manufacturer recommendations.
For cars and light trucks: AMSOIL Series 2000 0W-30 Severe Service is one of the very best and is a 35,000 mile/1-year oil. Change the AMSOL Super Duty oil filter every 12,500 miles/6-months. If you do not put 35,000 miles per year on then the 5W-30 (ASL) or the 10W-30 (ATM) are also excellent choices and both are 25,000 mile/1-year lubricants. All AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants meet and far exceed all manufacturer specifications as well as API Specifications.
AMSOIL Series 3000 5W-30 HDD is the most advanced chemistry product AMSOIL offers and is also a 35,000 mile/1-year oil in non-commercial gas engine passenger cars and light truck applications. It has the beefiest additive package of all AMSOIL motor oils and resists oil breakdown from heat, blow-by chemicals and oxygen up to 10 times longer than conventional oils. It is also an excellent severe duty fleet type oil for applications such as police and delivery fleets.
the AMSOIL Series 2000 0W-30 Severe Service is a racing oil and of a different chemistry than the 10W-30 and 5W-30. I have been a Ford Engineer for 19 years and we often use the 0W-30 in the 800 Hp Ford/Roush Nascars as it has a shear strength better than most 50W oils and transfers heat more efficiently than heavier oils. Only about 60% of the engine cooling is done by the coolant and the rest is done by the oil via heat transfer. The 10W-30 and 5W-30 would not be good choices for racing. The 5W-30 ASL product code and 10W-30 ATM are both 25,000 mile/1-year oils where the 0W-30 is a 35,000 mile/1-year oil. The 4-ball wear test is also run at a different load, temp and RPM than the other 2 products so they cannnot be compared in that area. The 0W-30 does not thin out to a 0W as it gets hot. It stays a 30W just like the 10W-30 and the 5W-30. They are ALL 30 weight oils and each one can be beneficial in a specific application. The 10W-30 is a better oil under certain instances for higher mileage engines as it has a lower volatility. 10W-40 High Performance is a heavier duty oil for severe off road, towing and RV type use and is also a 25,000 mile/1-year oil.

And that’s the original Easyriders streamliner he’s looking at. I introduced Bob G. to Mil Blair at Jammer Cycle in 1978 and they became a sponsor and ultimately Easyriders became the owner. The rest is history. Finally there’s a couple of open road shots from Bob T., I rode with him in 1972. He’s still riding and living in a rusting 1959 Cadillac anchored in the Desert east of Palm Springs. There’s a couple of haunted stories there. WHO: Between 60,000 and 75,000 motorcycle enthusiasts from throughout North America and Europe will attend the 12th annual event.
WHAT: Festivities include motorcycle races, street festivals, concerts, charity rides, expos, seminars and celebrity appearances. Many venues offer live music.
WHEN: The official dates are today through Monday, but many bikers arrive earlier and stay later.

THE DEVIL ATTENDS LONE STAR BIKER BASH–at the lone star biker bash ( Big Texas chop off ) there was good times riding the track. I even with stalled the Texas Girl in between the cones. Wasn’t too bad ( it’s been a while since I rode a jockey shift ). Visiting with some of the other builders and Judges was a priceless experience ( even if Rick Fairless won’t trade me His Trump for the Texas Fireball ).

THE CRAZYHORSE PAINTER’S REPORT–I was all set to write about my experiences with over eager members of the law enforcement community. But the other day while looking through some old car magazines, I remembered some very funny things that happened back in the early ’80s, when I was unfortunate enough to own a body shop/garage with two morons. Three, if ya count my dad. Now I loved my dad bigtime, but he was always doing something stupid. One of which was the people he hired. One young girl, I’ll call her Prissy so no one recognizes her, was quite a character.
Now Prissy was one of those girls that always acts like she knows it all. One day my dad asked her to check the oil in the old, beat station wagon he used to deliver auto parts. It was low a quart, so my dad gave Prissy a full gallon jug of reclaimed oil, (that’s what he used in that oil burning wreck).
So she walks back in a little later with an empty jug and says it wasn’t enough. “I poured it all in but it still ain’t full.”
My dad can’t believe it. He’s thinking she must have missed the spout and there’s a gallon of oil sitting on the pavement under the car. They go out to the car and she points to the oil opening in the valve cover. “See, you still can’t see the surface of the oil. It must not be full.”
Needless to say, they had to drain out about 3 quarts before she could start her deliveries.
Prissy’s family lived near our shop in the rough section of town. She took to hanging around the shop, checking out the guys and trying to impress them. True – life at school had not been easy for her, but there were times when we wanted to choke her. One such night she told her mom a big lie about us. The kind of lie that could have got us all thrown into jail. Her mom pulled into our driveway like a house-of-fire.
I seldom saw my boyfriend raise his voice but that night he went off like a rocket. He told her mother how she better get a handle on her daughter or he’d turn in Prissy. “You better clean your house out lady. They got dogs that can sniff that stuff out no matter how well it’s hid.” A very embarrassed mom backed out of the yard as quickly as she had come roaring up.
A while later, a bunch of us are hanging out. It’s a Friday night, we are all around 20 years old, nothing better to do than hang around the shop, drink and talk bikes. We’re sitting there in these old bucket seats from a Capri that lean against the wall between the two overhead doors. So we see this shadow sneaking around in the alley. Could it be a neighborhood thug trying to mug the bikers? Yeah, right. Like that would happen.
From the way the local criminals treated us you woulda thought we had rocket launchers and M-16s in concrete bunkers. It’s got to be Prissy. Well we’re all feeling no pain, so we mess with her by bombarding the wall nearest her with beer bottles. Plenty of ammo had been available by then and there were six of us. She finally starts screaming and comes out saying she’s bleeding bad. She had a little cut on her hand. She says she’s scared to go home and wants to be forgiven. Derek tells her she has blown her shop privileges and must leave.
She lays down on the ground and won’t move. One of the girls, the biggest one, Lori, helps me get Prissy on her feet and we begin to push her up the street toward her house.
Lori was 5 foot 8 inches tall and played football with her three brothers. Prissy is fighting us like a girl possessed, jerking and trying to pull away. But we are fortified by an evening of hard drinking. There was no way we would let go. We got her about three doors down from her house and she suddenly quiets down and walks easily for a bit. Then she jerks loose and runs down the street. Lori takes after her, comes up behind her, leaps in the air and takes Prissy down with the sweetest tackle I’ve ever seen. She just flew through the air and grabbed Prissy around the legs and down she went. Prissy didn’t give us any trouble after that. Lori and I walked back to the shop in the moonlight.
Life was sweet that night. We didn’t go to jail. Prissy’s mom believed us and not her daughter, and we had our whole lives ahead of us. Prissy got her shop privileges back, and she continued to provide us with drama.
We closed the shop three years later. It did not have a happy ending. There was no shortage of crazy bad situations. These days, I don’t mind drama, as long as it’s not happening to me. But I’ll always remember that perfect tackle.
This week’s paint job belongs to Wendy Murray. Wendy had a baby boy a short time ago, and her hubby Randy decided to build her a bike. Now Randy is not a bike builder, but he loves custom bikes and has taught himself as much as he can. I painted a bike for Randy back in 2000 that made the cover of Biker. Wendy’s bike is a low little Softail springer. They went for a very blacked out look, using chrome as an accent. Below is a shot of Randy’s old bike.

It was about a week before Sturgis and on your site there was a link to asurvey on motorcycle pipes and that the first 700 people that completed thesurvey would be entered into a drawing for a set of pipes of your choosing.Well I’m game so I filled out the survey and forgot about it.

FREE AMERICAN DOWN– While riding my motorcycle in Phoenix I was targeted and hit by an old black druggie driving a borrowed car. I was almost killed, my skull cracked open and ribs broken. I was kept locked up and heavily drugged in hospitals in Phoenix. My sons kept my motorcycle magazine running and tried to have me kept in the hospital.
I got out and reclaimed my company but my sons and wife took all available funds and skipped the state, leaving me to survive and try and salvage what was left after their looting spree.
I was abandoned by my family and owe my life and livelihood to a couple bikers who came in to help and protect me from my own sons.
My wife of twenty five years moved back in with her family who told her she would be disowned if she came back to me. I am looking for people to help finance and restore the Free American.

VL HISTORY–Here is the pic of my mom in 1944 on a VL. I have one of my dad on his European tour in 1944 on a ‘liberated’ bike he found in Belgium. His work car was a Sherman tank.
I thought you might like this pic of my uncle taken during the Louisiana war games manuevers in 1941. He’s the tall guy. Check out the gas tank in the photo. This was the last unit of the 7th Cavalry to change over from horses. It’s hard to believe that he retired as a Lt. Col. from S.A.C. (B-52 driver).

STEALTH REPORT FROM N.C.–Stealthman is up in Virginia visiting his family for a few days, so it’s me, Meanest, filling in for the Thursday news.
I was a mere babe in the woods when I started working at H-D of Charlotte a few years ago. I had never been around bikers, or even been on a bike. After my first ride, I was hooked. It didn’t take me long to realize why bikers feel a special kinship to others who ride. You become part of a large, extended family.
My point to all this is that just because you own a bike, or ride, doesn’t make you a biker, and it sure doesn’t make you a member of that family. The ones who have the most seem to appreciate it the least. The “haves” and the “have nots” couldn’t be more different if they wore signs, not that they need to. The “haves”stick out like a sore thumb in their new leathers, with every piece of chrome you can throw on the newest factory model. Some of the “haves” even shell out the big bucks to buy a yuppie chopper as seen on the latest Discovery Channel show, (no offense, Mr. Bandit!).
Working in a dealership, I get to see a lot of the “haves” and I’ve worked for more than a few of the “haves” through the years. Don’t count on them when you’re down. Quite the opposite, the “haves” want to know what you can do for them. It’s the “have nots” who will stop if you’re broken down on the side of the road, who will buy you a beer at bike night if you’re short of cash, the ones who will include you in their Sunday afternoon cookouts when you need a friend. These are the people who support a good cause, hug you to celebrate your good fortune, and shake your hand when you’ve been dealt a raw deal.
Loyalty is a word that is thrown around a lot these days, but it’s a quality, not just a word, that is defined by the fine people I have met and known since I was introduced to bikers. Notice I didn’t say “motorcycle enthusiasts,” I said “bikers.” As the popular helmet sticker says, “If I have to explain, you wouldn’t understand.” You won’t find a more loyal, hard-working group of people than the bikers you meet as you go down the road. I’m still a babe in the woods when it comes to bikes. Hell, Stealthman won’t even let me go in our garage when he’s not home! But in my heart I know I discovered family when I took that first ride. I’ll be a biker, and a “have not” any day, especially when you consider the alternative.
Until next week, when Stealthman should return to his usual spot, tell somebody how much they mean to you. Better yet, take them for a ride.

We studied the latest technology, combined that with expertise gained on the first RevTech, 100 project, and got down to the task at hand. It’s actually raining in California. I can’t handle it. The depression is killing me. I need Jack Daniels (been out for a couple of weeks), a woman and a warm night. Even if I’m not riding, the thought that I can’t brings me down to the pits. Fortunately Krash sent me a bottle of Makers Mark for the Monster Garage show. I’m milkin’ it.
A call rang through from the headquarters just a couple of minutes ago. “Get your ass down here and hold this petcock bung,” Mr. Hall, the professional welder, three doors down, on our industrial wasteland street, hollered. “I want it to burn your hands not mine. His shop area was muddy and swamped from the rain, but he has a number or workshop 20-foot steel containers. In one is his partially completed hot rod project. Another houses his office, small project welding table and my aluminum XR tank for the chopper sat center stage.
He instructed me to hold the bung on a wire at a specific angle for him to tack. Natch, I dropped the dam thing right through the hole into the tanks. He snapped, set his tungsten tip TIG torch down to fish out the bung. I slipped out the back quietly. Let’s hit the news:

NEW DAYTONA MAIN STREET VISION–DAYTONA BEACH — Visiting urban planners offered city, resident and business leaders a new vision for the Main Street area Friday as bikers began bearing down for the kickoff of Biketoberfest.
A nine-person team from the Urban Land Institute, a non-profit group based in Washington, D.C., spoke of themed outside festivals for upscale bikers with landscaped buffers and speed bumps to protect neighborhoods from events.
The plans also include new condominiums, restored historic homes, pedestrian promenades, a new convention hotel near the Ocean Center and a parking garage with ground-floor shops and rooftop townhomes.
But in a presentation following a week of interviews with city leaders, the planners also identified an obstacle — a hardening of attitudes by various interest groups in the city on issues such as special events and development.
“It’s time to put aside this self-imposed gridlock,” said Frank Sparicio, the team’s chairman.
City leaders applauded the presentation, but some of Friday’s recommendations could ignite smoldering controversies — over the city’s power to force the sale of property for development, oceanfront condominiums in the core tourist area and outside festival vendors. The planners support all three.

DAYTONA CAR PULLS IN FRONT OF MOTORCYCLE, TWO INJURED– DAYTONA BEACH — Two Ponce Inlet residents were injured when their motorcycle spilled while attempting to slow down behind a car making a right turn on International Speedway Boulevard, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The motorcycle operator, Mark Weeksno age given, no age listed, was transported to Halifax Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition on Sunday, a nursing supervisor said.
Jinsong Weeks also was taken to Halifax, the FHP said, but a no age given condition was not available Sunday.
The accident occurred at 2:05 p.m. Saturday on International Speedway Boulevard near the intersection of Red John Drive west of Daytona Beach, said Trooper Kurt Glaenzer. The pair were westbound on International Speedway Boulevard when a westbound car driven by Heather Lovett, address unavailable, pulled in front of them from the inside lane to make a right turn, Glaenzer said. Mark Weeks tried to slow down but the motorcycle slid, throwing the motorcycle’s two occupants to the roadway.
Lovett was not injured and charges are pending an investigation, Glaenzer said.

CUSTOM LEATHER SADDLEBAGS– My name is George from Mesa Arizona. I have been making leather motorcycle accessories for friends and myself for 25 years. My latest project is iron cross saddlebags, western throw over style. Made of glove soft high quality 5/6 oz chrome tan leather. Measurements are 11? X 11? X 5?. These saddlebags have unique features starting with the iron crosses. The leather is cleaned and prepped then airbrushed using acrylic enamel paint. This paint acts like a stain is very flexible and moves with the leather. It is then stitched around the outside using heavy nylon thread in silver for an inlay effect.
Under one of the flaps is a stitched black widow spider with painted hourglass. No two will ever be alike.
The hardware is top-notch 1-inch nickel-plate cart buckles with heavy leather straps, 1 1/2-inch chrome slotted conchos with leather scallops. Rivets used at all stress points.
The flaps are stitched using heavy 69 nylon threads in silver a very unique feature requiring precision and attention to detail not found on other saddlebags.

FLORIDA WOODWORKER MAKES WHEELS–DELAND — When John Richert grabs the oak and walnut handlebar grips of his 1979 Harley-Davidson, he holds two great loves of his life in his grasp. John Richert shows off his motorcycle in the garage and woodworking shop of his DeLand home.
“It makes him who he is,” says Gloria Ehmann, his girlfriend of 10 years.Family and friends tease Richert, a 69-year-old retiree, for his wild, white hair. Einstein in a biker tank top, they call him.
He takes his motorcycles so seriously he moved from South Florida in 1992 so he could be closer to Daytona Beach, home of events such as this week’s Biketoberfest.
But when he’s not riding, he’s in the garage building box joints or handling the head saw.
Ask how much it’s worth and Richert guesses maybe $10,000, not bad for a bike with 150,000 miles on it.
But, he adds: “I ain’t going to sell it.”It’s the work that gets him noticed in the biker crowds, Ehmann said.
“It gets conversations going, it’s so different,” she said.Much of the custom works on his 25-year-old bike are handcrafted accessories. From a sunglasses box at the base of the windshield to carved lettering spelling out the hog’s maker between the wheels, the woody is a timber titan amidst the thunder of chrome.
That very motorcycle — he has several others — was the one that brought Richert and Ehmann together 10 years ago. It was before he began decorating it with his handicraft.A friend introduced the two, knowing they both loved motorcycles.Both divorced, they have been together ever since.
