It’s another wild weekend here at the Wilmington Bikernet Headquarters. Last weekend, during Love Ride parties I was dismayed to find that Wilmington, California was named after Wilmington, Delaware. No offence to the east coast unit, but what kind of bullshit is that? Banning named the town after the town he grew up in. He needed a creative writing course. I say we change it to Smugglers’ Cove.
Thought I would kick back this weekend, but the entire industry is merging on Las Vegas for the Big Twin Dealer show and Bradley’s World Championship. I’m flying out for a day. Let’s hit the news. I’ve got to pack, plan out the women I want to see and the Vegas night life. Business can wait:

STURGIS HOME FOR SALE-BEFORE IT HITS THE MARKET–Just thought you might know someone who would be interested in this:We are selling our wee house. It is a little over 700 square feet, two bedroom, one bath, large garage (20×30 I think). $65,000.00. It is on Park Avenue and 9th, one block north of Lazelle, two blocks west of the J&P Cycles building, in walking distance to Main Street and vendor locations west of Junction.
It isn’t fancy and wouldn’t appeal to any of your friends, however it would be perfect for an industry person who brings people to the rally and needs accommodation for them, as well a storage.
It’s been a good space. The yard is particularly pretty and a nice private space to relax during the summer months. Loads of trees and, if I might brag, a lovely garden. House/garage was painted two years ago. Roof is new, hardwood floors in the two bedrooms, laundry room, washer and dryer will stay, as will the stove and window air conditioner unit that is more than adequate for the small space. If they utilized the living room area, the space would easily sleep six people. The garage is insulated. We have Jon’s truck, the Honda Accord and three bikes in it every day plus Jon’s work space.
Six mature oaks, one mature elm, several lilacs, a 20 foot cottenless cottonwood, a young maple, a fast growing Box Elder tree and a 10 foot ornamental crab apple.The portion of the yard that is right off the alley (between Lazelle and Park) has a six foot privacy fence. Property is 100 feet long by 50 feet across, long and narrow. Built the rock path myself!

ARLEN NESS– King of Choppers– KING OF CHOPPERS is the title of a new book about Arlen Ness. It is by Michael Lichter, the well-known motorcycle photographer, who received assistance from his subject. The foreword is by Sonny Barger.
The book is hardback and contains 192 pages, including a pictorial history of the bikes built by Arlen Ness over the years together with a biography of the builder.
The book is available from Arlen Ness and should prove a popular line – especially at Christmas.

The prison system’s “Big House Choppers” venture is expanding from a small wooden shed involving a few motorcycle-savvy convicts to a larger prison shop in southern Nevada that will employ as many as 30 inmates.”We are producing the only true outlaw motorcycles being produced by outlaws in the United States,” Howard Skolnik, head of the state’s prison industries program, said Monday.Skolnik boasts that buyers also will receive a certificate that confirms pieces of scrapped prison cell bars went into their bikes – in the form of 5-inch-long fender supports. “Little things like that make these bikes look desirable,” he said.Skolnik told a legislative oversight panel that payment of a $15,000 licensing fee to the state Department of Motor Vehicles will clear the way for sale of the custom choppers.”You know, there’s no accounting for bad taste, senator,” Skolnik said to state Sen. Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, who asked for details on the program and its market appeal. “People want these bikes. They really do.” The venture, with the motto “Built with Conviction,” started at the Southern Desert Correctional Center, but may soon move into a 10,000-square-foot area within a large industrial building at the High Desert State Prison. Both prisons are in southern Nevada. Two convicts are now building the choppers and already have produced their first, a cherry-colored motorcycle with a big, 110-cubic-inch engine and a prison guard tower painted on it. Skolnik said a young inmate who worked on the first motorcycle recently was released and, because of the skills he learned in the prison industries program, quickly got a job paying nearly $20 an hour. Nevada’s prison industries programs go well beyond making license plates and include old car restoration, making draperies, embroidery work and concrete casting. The programs are designed to be self-supporting, so they don’t rely on taxpayer money. Inmates can earn $5.15 an hour for their work, and learn a trade that will help them once they’re released. –from Rogue OWNERS RIGHT TO REPAIR ACT– Congressional Hearing on the Motor Vehicle Owners Right to Repair Act (HR2048)The Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection met on November 10th to question the motor vehicle manufacturers and aftermarket part industries on the “Right to Repair” bill. Under current law, motor vehicle and motorcycle manufacturers must make available publicly, only information pertaining to the emissions on board diagnostic systems under an Environmental Protection Agency mandate. This results, in some cases forced owners to return to the dealership for other repairs that might have been less expensive and more convenient to fix at a local mechanic or even by getting their own hands dirty. The rapid advancement in braking, ignition, security and safety technology has resulted in more sophisticated diagnostic tools and equipment that manufactures are reluctant to make available to the shade tree mechanic or vehicle owner. Without access to the same training and tools made readily available to those within the dealership network, many small shops are being forced to turn away work. In fact in a survey of aftermarket automotive technicians, over fifty percent of them have turned away one to six jobs a month. Consumer safety is also compromised when local repair shops of choice aren’t provided information to conduct certain repairs causing drivers and riders to avoid some needed repairs due to costly dealership service prices.This legislation is nothing new, the coalition of groups that supports the legislation has been attempting to right this wrong for almost six years. So, why is it taking so long? During a hearing on this measure in the 107th Congress it was decided that the disputing parties would attempt to resolve the issue with a non-legislative answer. Their answer was to set up an independent council comprised of aftermarket and motor vehicle manufacturers and agree on the way to share the information in question voluntarily. However an agreement was never reached because of a lone holdout in the manufacturers’ camp, an expensive and top of the line European manufacturer. Back to the hearing, Chairman Sterns (R-FL) the subcommittee chair set the tone for the hearing in his opening statement when he said “All parties agree that access to repair and service information is a consumer right”. Other members at the hearing echoed the Chairman’s sentiments. Even the full Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Joe Barton (R-TX) was in attendance. His strong statement of support of the bill was almost the nail in the coffin for the motor vehicle manufactures. Barton went on saying, “Federal legislation is not the answer to everything but in this case, after four years of discussion with no results, it’s the only answer”. Barton also happens to be the original sponsor of HR 2048, and is the one man who can see this legislation to the House floor for a vote and has vowed to do so. A full Energy and Commerce committee mark up is tentatively scheduled for sometime the first two weeks of December. Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation said, “This issue is about access and information but ultimately about consumer choice. Purchasing a motorcycle from your favorite manufacturer shouldn’t tie you to them as long as you own the motorcycle. We as the owners should be able to make the decision who performs maintenance or upgrades our motorcycles.”We have the right to remain silent, the right to an attorney and now the US House of Representatives wants you to have the right to repair your motorcycle. Call your Member of Congress at 202 224 3121 and ask them to please support HR 2048, the Motor Vehicle Owner Right to Repair act of 2005. EDITORIAL AGAINST MAY OF MYRTLE BEACH–He Says He has the right to nudge you with his car if you’re wearing an obscene t-shirt!
Man, I hate to say this, but it seems the Mayor of Myrtle Beach South Carolina is as dumb as a box of rocks, and I feel sorry for him. I feel sorry for him because he recently stuck his foot in his mouth and obviously isn’t smart enough to publicly extricate his shoe. Instead he blames the local newspaper for misquoting him.What, you may ask, did The “Honorable” Mayor McBride say?
McBride told other council members during an October meeting that he was driving with one of his children in the vehicle during the fall Myrtle Beach rally and his child saw a biker wearing an offensive shirt. He was quoted in the Sun News Times as saying “It was very tempting to kind of nudge the guy on the bike [with my car].”McBride claims he never meant he would nudge the guy with his car, just that he was tempted to “nudge the guy on the bike.” However in a follow-up story in the Sun News, McBride was quoted as saying, “”I thought about bumping the guy, I admit, the thought ran through my mind.”
I guess he meant he thought about bumping him with his over inflated ego?
Maybe that’s what the driver who ran into the rear of Scott Allen Hice’s 1972 Harley-Davidson four days earlier while he was stopped at a stop sign on Hwy 17 By-pass was thinking. Maybe that was just a “nudge.” I dunno Mr. Mayor, maybe you should ask Hice’s family if it’s OK to “nudge” a motorcyclist when you don’t like what his T-shirt says.The worse part is when the proverbial stinky hit the fan, the Mayor didn’t apologize, No….this political brain trust had the audacity to defend his statement in a ABATE candidate forum a couple of days later. He even said he has “the right” to bump someone on a bike if that person wears an obscene t-shirt!

Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off– On Saturday, 17 December 2005, Pacific Rim Cycle, and The Pasha Group will be host to the 50th State’s largest motorcycle rally to be held at Kapiolani Community College in the heart of Honolulu.
In association with KPOI (“The Big Kahuna”) radio, Hawaii’s premier motorcycle publication (Hawaiian Chopper) will put on “The Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off”.
Designed as a series of motorcycle related events, which will include a magazine model search, custom motorcycle contest, tattoo contest, biker build-off, and rock concert (act to be named), the event is sure to excite both bikers and the general public alike.
Beginning with a VIP party December 16th (time/place TBD) motorcycle enthusiasts will view the screening of the “Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off”. This will be the first viewing of the custom bike build-off between local master builder Roger Kuwahara of Kustom Fab, and Shannon Aikau, the chief builder from Counts Kustoms of Las Vegas. We have begun filming the building process of both motorcycle builders, and this event will be the only opportunity for spectators to see the action leading up to the fan judging of the bikes the following day.
On Saturday, 17 December at 10:00am, the gates will open for the “Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off” Rally. Participants will find plenty of parking at the venue, and will be charged a $20.00 entry fee ($15.00 pre-sale) into the festivities.
A Magazine Model Search will be held featuring some of Hawaii’s most beautiful women, all vying for a chance to become one of Hawaiian Chopper’s cover girls.
A custom bike contest and tattoo contest will be organized allowing riders and custom builders to show their prized two-wheeled rides, and their hot tattoo artwork, all in search of a cool trophy.
A concert featuring one of Hawaii’s top new rock & roll acts. The group Analog will play their hard driving style of rock and will be a great way to cap off the day’s activities.
Oh, and of course, the “Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off” will give spectators the opportunity to select the winner of the Hawaii’s first Biker Build-Off by casting their vote for their favorite chopper.
In addition to all the festivities planned for the December event, joining us will be celebrated motorcycle builders, Danny “The Count” Koker of Counts Kustoms and Jose De Miguel of Caribbean Custom Cycles. These custom builders received international notoriety on Discovery Channel’s “Great Biker Build-Off”, the Speed Channel, and magazines such as, Barnett’s Motorcycle Showcase, The Horse, Street Chopper, Hawaiian Chopper and others. Both of these men are wildly popular characters of the motorcycle genre.
Along with some of the World’s top celebrity builders, visitors to this year’s event will be actively engaged in the festivities, making this the biker event of the year.
Finally, I am also proud to announce the display appearance of heavy metal rock group Motley Crue’s specially built choppers. These are the actual bikes that Motley Crue takes on tour with them. When the band appears onstage at the Blaisdell Arena December 14th, these bikes will not be part of the show, in fact, to see these bikes, you will have to attend “The Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off”!
If that isn’t enough, Counts Kustoms will be displaying the “Ozzy” bike built for Rocker Ozzy Osbourn, and their radical custom choppers.
Of course, no event would be complete without great food, drinks, and giveaways, so we will feature the cooking some of Hawaii’s best restaurants. Add to that drink specials courtesy of Rosa’s Ice Tee, and numerous prizes to be given away randomly, and we have a world-class motorcycle rally.

KUSTOMWERKS ANNOUNCES EXCLUSIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH KENDALL JOHNSON CUSTOMS– KERNERSVILLE, North Carolina-based distributor Kustomwerks hasannounced that it has signed a new marketing agreement with Kendall Johnson Customs to produce and market an all-new KJC signature series line of custom fenders.
Manufactured to both Kendall and Kustomwerks “exacting quality standards, these fenders will be produced from heavy gauge steel with seams”, Don Hannon, the president of Kustomwerks told AMD. “By using one-piece construction, the new signature series fenders will not split or crack. Each KJC signature series fender will also include a phosphate etching to reduce rusting and prep time for the builder.” The program will include front fenders for 19in and 21in narrow glide wheels in 4.25in, 4.75in and 5.50in widths. The rear fenders will come in 9.00in, 11.00in, 12.50in and 13.50in widths to fit 200 mm to 300mm tire motorcycles and will be available in rigid and softail styles.
Each fender will come undrilled to fit a variety of custom applications. “Kendall is one of the top builders in the industry, and we have worked closely with him and his team to ensure that the new fender line upholds standards”, Hannon added.
“Having the two firms located so near to each other gives us both the opportunity to communicate ideas effectively and has enabled a great working relationship to develop”. The line will be distributed exclusively by Kustomwerks and Kendall Johnson Customs, and will be seen for the first time at the Big Twin West Dealer Show in Las Vegas in November.

ANDREW HINES CLINCHES SECOND CONSECUTIVE NHRA POWERADE PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR SCREAMIN’ EAGLE–Teammate GT Tonglet Takes Second Place in Final Standings POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 6, 2005) – Andrew Hines clinched his second consecutive NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle championship Sunday at the 41st annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway.
He nearly made it a perfect evening too, as he rode the Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson into the final round for the fifth time this season.
What’s more, teammate GT Tonglet earned second place in the final standings – his career-best finish.
“This is an amazing finish because not only did we win back-to-back championships but we also took second place for a strong 1-2 punch,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “It’s especially incredible considering all the competition this season. It was tough to win rounds and races all year, so for us to finish in first and second place shows how truly dynamic this Vance & Hines team is.”
It is the fifth NHRA championship for tuner and team owner Byron Hines. The veteran crew chief also tuned his oldest son and current team tuner, Matt Hines, to three championships between 1997-99.
“This is a great day for both Harley-Davidson and the Vance & Hines family,” Hines said. “We never start the season looking to win championships. We start the season looking to set records and win races. If you can do that, the championships will follow and it has the last two seasons.
“We had the bike to beat at Pomona, but it didn’t go our way this year. That has always been one of the toughest tracks for us for some reason. We may have won the title, but that just gives us more motivation to get back to the shop and prepare for next season.”
Hines wrapped up the title as soon as Tonglet lost in the first round. Tonglet, just 47 points behind Hines in the standings going into the final race of the year, lost to Kawasaki rider Mike Berry. Tonglet turned in a 7.254-second pass at 182.55 mph in a losing effort against Berry’s 7.160 at 186.98.
Hines watched the run and knew he had clinched the title.
“I was really nervous before GT ran,” Hines said. “I wanted a repeat title so badly that I was just sick to my stomach before the first round. Then GT lost and I just put my head down and raced.”
Hines went on to win his first and second round matches at the starting line due to red-light fouls by his opponents. Hines went 7.100 at 187.89 to Buell rider Chris Rivas’ foul before turning in a 7.171 at 185.72 against Berry’s foul in the second round.
Hines posted a win in the semifinal race against Buell rider Chip Ellis, going 7.119 at 187.89 against Ellis’ 7.174 at 183.02.
In the final round, Hines saw red and so did his opponent, Buell rider Ryan Schnitz. Hines fouled at the starting line with a reaction time of -0.011 before going 7.107 at 188.70, giving the victory to Schnitz, whose -0.010 reaction time was followed by a run of 8.126 at 121.69. It was the second time the two riders have faced off in the final round and the second time Hines handed Schnitz the win at the starting line.
“It was a bittersweet ending to a great season,” Hines said. “This year’s championship was definitely much better than last year because I think we had to work a lot harder to make it happen. The red light in the final is disappointing but at least we were in the final this year, and I’ve been around long enough to know that it happens. I think it’s going to be a great offseason with two championships under my belt.”
Hines earned two wins in five final rounds this season along with 10 top qualifying awards. He also set the national record twice, earning an extra 20 bonus points for each record.
“Going 6.96 seconds in Sonoma (Calif.), earning the 20 bonus points, being the top qualifier and winning the race there made it the best event of the season,” Hines said. “We earned the maximum amount of points for one event and that was just awesome.
“If we had not set both of those records, I would have come into Pomona just seven points ahead of GT instead of 47, and who knows how that could have changed the event. It certainly would have made it a lot tougher. GT was a great competitor this year and I’m glad the team finished first and second in points. We’ve all accomplished so much.”
As if the championship and second place weren’t enough, the crew took home top honors as well. The team earned the first Full Throttle Award, given to the team with the most consistent qualifying performance over the course of the entire season.
Tonglet finished in sixth place last season. This year, he not only posted two wins in three final rounds, but he was also the points leader for the first time in his career. He held the top spot in the standings following seven races this season.
“I’m happy I stayed in second place because that’s a first for me and it shows how well we competed all season long,” Tonglet said. “At the beginning of the season I wanted to do better than last year and my goal was a top five finish. We did that. The V-Rod ran better this season, I rode better and it showed in our results. The work paid off and it was a lot of fun all year long.”

OHIO HELMET BILL INTRODUCED–Better spread the word on this one.Wake up, OHIO Bikers, the safety nazis are back and this time they’re beating at OUR door. Introduced this week, HB 406 proposed that a fulltime helmet law be put in place for ANY operator and passenger under the age of 25! It further proposes that if anyone is charged under this statute, if enacted, a mandatory fine of 500.00 SHALL be imposed (good-bye judicial discretion) which will go to fund a Traumatic Brain Injury fund, some of which will be used to fund a study of traumatic brain injuries (you know where that one is heading, don’t ya brothers and sisters? Can you say MANDATORY, FULL TIME HELMET LAW?)
Anyway, here’s the short description of the bill’s intended purpose and a link to the full text of the bill.
As Introduced126th General Assembly Regular Session 2005-2006H. B. No. 406requires persons who are under 25 years of age to wear a helmet while riding on a motorcycle either as the operator or as a passenger, to require persons convicted of failing to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle, driving under license suspension, driving without a valid driver’s license, driving under OVI suspension, driving under financial responsibility suspension, and failing to produce proof of financial responsibility in certain circumstances to pay a mandatory $500 fine, to permit those persons in certain circumstances to choose between a jail term of two consecutive weekend days or attendance at a safe and responsible driving instructional class, to create the Traumatic Brain Injury Fund and the Safe and Responsible Driving Instructional Fund, and to require some of the fines paid by such persons to be deposited into these new funds.

POKER RUN & TOY DRIVESATURDAYNOVEMBER 12,2005 This will actually be the day we are going to do our check presentation to the Wahabi Shriners for $10,000.00 from the rally the Dixie Rollers had in July at the Atwood Water Park in Monticello, Ms., due to Hurricane Katrina our original date had to be rescheduled.
The Wahabi Shriners will be having their annual bar-b-que and gun give away on this date and have asked that we join them for the day and do the check presentation at the same time. Anyone going with the group will not have to pay to get in or to eat this day. We will be collecting toys on the morning of the ride to help with Christmas for the local evacuees from Hurricane Katrina, unwrapped toys from birth to 12th grade children will gladly be accepted.
Everyone is urged to bring a toy with them and make the poker run to Jackson to the Wahabi Temple Shrine located on Interstate 55. Money made from the poker run will go to help purchase more toys for the drive. After all Christmas is just around the corner!

V-TWIN COMMITTEE REPORTS EPA NEGOTIATION PROGRESSIVE— THE FIFTH meeting of the MIC American V-Twin Committee at the end of August this year resulted in progress on the issues of EPA engine certification and sound test procedures.
Following earlier contacts, the EPA asked the MIC to draft provisions for an on-highway motorcycle engine certification program to allow small volume motorcycle manufacturers and builders to purchase EPA certified engines, and install them without having to recertify the motorcycle. Currently, custom builders and small volume manufacturers must certify the complete motorcycle even if they install an engine that is used in another motorcycle, and that has already been EPA certified.
The MIC draft engine certification program was presented to the EPA in July, which is now considering the proposal. The American V-Twin Committee also discussed recent progress with its OE Technical Committee on the feasibility of developing an appropriate in-use, on-highway motorcycle sound test procedure.
Motorcycle noise is a major concern and many states and municipalities are considering the adoption of varying standards and tests that could be detrimental to the industry. The Committee’s objective in creating this test is to provide states and municipalities with an easy, economical, reliable and uniform means of controlling excessive motorcycle noise.
Support for developing an in-use, on-highway test procedure has also been expressed by the Motorcycle Sound Working Group and some members of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Motorcycle Committee.
The MIC was planning to discuss this issue with the SAE at their next meeting. The MIC would likely be the key source of funding for a program to devise a new SAE sound test procedure that is simpler to use than the current one

Hey,
I don’t know a damn thing and I have nothing to say. I’m not even sure I’m innocent. Since the Mexico blast I’ve been in a daze. Then it was a mad dash to the Texas National Bike Show, at the Lone Star Rally in Galveston and back for Love Ride Weekend. I’m still spinning and trying desperately to catch up on e-mails.
I apologize If I haven’t run across your e-mail in my harried attempt to catch up. It’s all exciting, but out of hand. This weekend is packed with TV show meetings, No Love Parties, Antique bike auctions and Hamster get-togethers. I will try to launch Johnny White’s report on the Texas National Bike show tomorrow. I have some more book reviews from Jaq in Australia and two bike features to launch next week, including a Steeds and one from the guys in Hawaii. You’ll dig it, so hang on. Let’s hit the news:

VTRACEGIRL BIKERNET.COM UPDATE–November 7, 2005, Just got back from the SEMA show (Specialty Equipment Market Association), Las Vegas Convention Center, November 1-4, 2005.
Great vendors, booth presentation. This show is almost impossible to go thru the entire event. Two million sq ft’ inside, and two million sq ft’ outside of vendors. VT was signing autograph posters in the Sport Chassis – Legend Air Ride Suspension booth. This was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I had a chance to see the most expensive set of custom three-piece forged wheels to ever be created: 12,000 diamonds and 800 sapphires totaling 1,100 carats for ONE MILLION dollars in the Asanti booth. Also, visited the Cooper tires booth maybe next year I will have my race bike in their booth. As well as Garrett’s booth Garrett Turbo is the turbo I run in my bike.
Saturday Practice day at Speedworld Raceway. Took my Custom Performance Turbo V-Rod and Fatboy to the track. Cut great lights and had very consistent times on both bikes. I worked on my RT and first 60ft’. On the turbo bike my best ET was 10.32 @ 133.79 mph and RT .063. Best time on my fatboy was 12.15 seconds @ 113.83 mph. I cut a .001 light on the fatboy. Getting the fatboy dialed in for the shoot out in Vegas.
Next event is back to Vegas for the biggest of them all AHDRA Grand Finals coming up at the Jim’s Las Vegas Nationals presented by Barnett Clutches November 12-13. I will be racing my Custom Performance Turbo V-Rod in the Super Sport (SS #261) as well as my 2000 custom fatboy in the 4th Annual Las Vegas High-Stakes Shootout with a $15,000 purse. Last race of the AHDRA season and hope to go out with a WIN.

POLARIS ANNOUNCES ORGANIZATIONAL EXPANSION–Appointment of Mark Blackwell to Vice President of Victory Motorcycles and International Operations Leads Series Of Management Transitions That Poise Company For Strong Growth.
MEDINA, MN (November 7, 2005) – Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE/PSE: PII) has announced the appointment of several members of the management team to new positions, effective immediately.
Mark Blackwell has been named Vice President, Victory Motorcycles & International Operations. Blackwell joined Polaris in 2000 as General Manager of Victory Motorcycles. “Mark has done an outstanding job over the past four years building a very strong team, developing new, compelling product and establishing Victory, The New American Motorcycle, as a legitimate brand positioned for significant growth in the motorcycle industry,” said Polaris President and Chief Operating Officer Bennett Morgan. “There are many reasons why this is a good move for Mark and Polaris – he is a proven leader with strong international experience running businesses and as a motocross champion early in his career.” He added, “His experience will be a huge asset in our developing partnership with KTM and Victory will be a key component of our growth outside the U.S in the future.”
Allan Hurd has been promoted to General Manager, Victory Motorcycles reporting to Mark Blackwell. “Although we do want Mark to have a key role in Victory Motorcycles going forward, we also want to ensure that he has sufficient time to focus on the International business,” said Morgan. An industry veteran with over 30 years of experience, Hurd joined Polaris in 2000 as Director of Engineering for Victory. “He understands our competition and has extensive experience in Europe and other parts of the world,” added Morgan. “Allan and Mark have proven to be an effective team which will be instrumental in our continuing quest to grow our motorcycle business.”
Marc Tullemans has been promoted to the role of International Operations Manager. In this role, he will be responsible for managing the international staff based in Medina and overseeing logistics, marketing and retail development processes on a global basis. Tullemans came to Polaris in 2001 as the Product Manager for the RANGER Utility Vehicle Division and later joined the international team as the Global Sales and Dealer Development Manager. Prior to joining Polaris, Marc held positions at Graco, Thermo King, and Arctic Cat in dealer development, product development, marketing, and international sales roles.
Paul Tomsche has been promoted to International Business Development and Distributor Sales Manager, reporting to Marc Tullemans. In this role, he will be responsible for global business development in a variety of territories. Tomsche joined Polaris in August, 2000 as the Retail Development Manager for the Personal Watercraft division. Prior to joining Polaris, he held a variety of sales, marketing, dealer development, and business management positions at Yamaha for nine years.
John Corness, Vice President of Human Resources since 1999 and having extensive international experience, had been taking on interim responsibilities of managing the international business for the past 7 months leading up to this announcement. “John stepped up and filled a key gap for Polaris at an important time,” said Morgan. “During his leadership, the International team continued to deliver outstanding growth and we thank him for his tireless efforts.” Corness will now resume full-time responsibility for Human Resources.

HURRICANE HIT SHOP REPORT–Hope this email finds everyone okay- we just got power back and we had no damage up until Tuesday- The landlord immediately had a new roof installed this past Thurs- Monday- the roofer told us it was finished, so we unwrapped all the stuff and put the shop back together. We came in Tuesday with a generator to get back to work and it was raining-well the roofer forgot to install the roof on our side of the building. We walked into a mess. The water was literally running down every wall in the shop- and the power had come on so the electric boxes were sizzling as the water ran through them. We lost every piece of equipment and hardware and tools- toolboxes were filled with water. The lathe- welder- all of it- after the shock. I called the lawyer- he will do whatever he does and I am out every day looking for a new location and some used equipment.
We will not be taken out by some dumb ass who was an incompetent contractor- especially after all we have been through to make it (Vagabond Chopper Co.) what it is-so other than that bullshit the house & kids are healthy, so is dad and his place. I am grateful for that and my friends and their families are safe and well too- anything else can be fixed-What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger- right? Improvise, adapt, overcome…
Everything is still going as planned we will be in a new location by the first of the month. I will be in Las Vegas for the Big Twin West Dealer Show to help kick off the 1-in-8 series, and I will be unveiling my new chopper at the Seminole hard rock- Roadhouse Finals.

S&S/G SQUARED BUELL SETS POMONA TRACK RECORD!–The Auto Club NHRA Finals held in Pomona, California kept the Pro Stock Motorcycle crowd on their feet all weekend. During the three days of qualifying fans saw Chip Ellis on the G Squared/S&S Buell hit 190.30 mph, Tom Bradford on the Hal’s H-D V-Twin Buell go 191.38 mph and Matt Smith on the G Squared/S&S/Red Line Oil Buell set a new track record with a 7.000 second, 189.82 mph pass!
The 160ci S&S Pro Stock-powered bikes made quite an impression this weekend by filling up six of 16 slots available for the finals on Sunday. Throughout the eliminations, S&S/Buell powered bikes moved up in the field, especially Chip Ellis who swapped engines just before the semi-finals and on an untuned S&S Pro Stock engine went 7.174 at 183.02 mph! The finals came down to Ryan Schnitz on the Team Muzzy Buell against Andrew Hines and his Vance and Hines bike. Hines red-lighted and handed the win to Schnitz-his third of the 15-round season. In fact, five of the 15-rounds this year were won by S&S Pro Stock powered bikes.
Other 160ci S&S Pro Stock-powered Buell motorcycles also did well this weekend with all six S&S-powered bikes going into the elimination rounds Sunday.

FLORIDA EVENT CHANGES–
First, we hope everyone has fared the storm well, without any major personal or material damage.
As you all know, South Florida was hit pretty hard by hurricane Wilma, affecting everyone?s personal and business lives, most specially in Broward and Miami-Dade county.
Upon evaluation of the situation after hurricane Wilma and considering that for the next three weeks, the majority of the population in South Florida will be deeply concerned about getting their lives back to normal (over 1.5 million without power, shortage of gas, banks closed and 90% of retail business still closed), we have decided for postponing our 2005 show.
After checking the show calendar for conflicting bike shows, other local or regional events and available dates at the convention center, we have decided for
APRIL 01 & 02, 2006.
No one was more anxious and interested in keeping the original date for the show than ourselves. However, just like us, you are making an investment in the show and we want you to get the results you expect from it. We don?t want to perform the show just for the purpose of fulfilling a commitment and not have a successful event for you and for our company.

AUSTRALIAN COFFEE CONNECTION–An Australian man was having coffee and croissants with butter and jam in a cafe, when an American tourist, chewing gum, sat down next to him.The Australian politely ignored the American, who, nevertheless started up a conversation.
The American snapped his gum and said, “You Australian folk eat the whole bread?”
The Australian frowned, annoyed with being bothered during his breakfast, and replied, “Of course”.
The American blew a huge bubble. ” We don’t. In the states we only eat whats inside. The crusts we collect in a container, recycle them, transform then into croissants, and sell them to Australia.”
The American had a smirk on his face. The Australian listened in silence.
The American persisted. “D’ya eat jam with the bread?”
Sighing, the Australian replied, “Of course”.
Cracking his gum between his teeth, the American said, “We don’t. In the states we eat fresh fruit for breakfast, then we put all the peels, seeds, and leftovers in containers, recycle them, transform them into jam and sell it to Australia.”
The Australian then asked, “Do you have sex in the States?”
The American smiled and said, “Why, of course we do.” The Australian leaned closer to him and asked, “and what do you do with the condoms once you’ve used them?”
“We throw them away, of course”

BANDIT SURVIVES MEXICO-BARELY–You only go around once in life. Sometimes you need to take the bull by the horns and go for it. I don’t watch NASCAR, stock car racing or cars with 10-foot diameter tires run over compacts. I’m a biker. But when a brother invited me to help with his effort to enter the most dangerous road race on earth, from one end of Mexico to the other, I couldn’t turn him down. We rode to Sturgis several times and hung out for almost 20 years. Besides he’s Dr. Hamster. So I said sure.
We hauled ass over 6000 miles in the last two weeks. Some 2000 of it was from the bottom of Mexico to the Laredo border, the most dangerous car race on earth. Sixty cars entered the La Carrera Panamericana race and 36 survived to finish. We came in 2nd in our class, Original PanAm. Get this. We were the only 2-man team to drive to the race, endure the race and drive home. You know, run what ya brung. We raced through the hills of Mexico passed throngs of people and screamin’ kids (second largest spectator sport in Mexico) with our bags in the back, packin’ our own tools, while all the other teams had race crews and back-up trucks and trailers.
MIKE LICHTER LOVE RIDE WEEKEND PHOTO EXHIBIT–
For something great to do on the Saturday before the Love Ride, ride out to Old Pasadena to the Mendenhall Sobieski Gallery for a motorcycle Kulture photography exhibition, celebrity bikes from the likes of Chica, Matt Hotch, Russell Mitchell, Roland Sands and Paul Yaffe in the gallery and a ride-in bike show outside.
For the occasion, photographer Michael Lichter will be displaying limited edition black and white and color photographs from his 25+ years of shooting the biker lifestyle all across America. His work chronicles the largest bike events dating back to the 1970’s as well as smaller gatherings right to the present.
While Michael has exhibited in many museums, this will be his inaugural show with the Mendenhall Sobieski Gallery, which represents his limited edition photographic prints. A portion of the proceeds from sales will go to the Love Ride for their charities.
The show will be open November 2 through November 13 with an artist reception Saturday November 12 (Love-Ride weekend,) from 5pm – 7:30 pm. ONLY TWO WEEKS TO GO-VEGAS IS COMING– Suddenly it’s November and we have just two more weeks to go before Advanstar’s Big Twin West and our own second annual Official World Championship Of Custom Bike Building open for business at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
The World Championship has now passed the 100 competitor mark (105 as this is written), and competitors will be traveling to Las Vegas from more than twenty states and ten countries internationally. They will be showing nearly 170 bikes in total, and while everyone of them will be hoping they can carry off the prestigious title of World Champion for 2005, from the contacts we are having with them it is also perfectly clear that above all they are looking forward to what should be an unprecedented opportunity to meet industry colleagues and vendors. And maybe have a little fun along the way too!
On average the World Championship competitors will be spending some $5,000 of their own hard earned cash on getting to the event with their bike(s), and this marks an unprecedented investment into a Dealer Show and bike competition. We here at AMD are very grateful for the backing the ‘Builder Community’ is demonstrating for our endeavors, and are pulling out all possible stops to help ensure that they get maximum long-term benefit from their involvement.
As are the exhibitors who will be taking part in Big Twin West and the Custom Chrome Dealer Show. Everybody knows that the market has slowed down in the second half of this year, so not only does their involvement in the show reflect well on their determination to nonetheless invest in finding customers at a time when the cash cycle of the market is always at its slowest anyway, but also in their belief that the old suspicions surrounding West Coast/South West dealer events in general, and shows staged in the Fall in particular, are no longer relevant in the changed buying environment that the custom v-twin industry now enjoys.
There is much to look forward to at the event; and if you have not yet made up your mind to come and take a look, we here at AMD hope you will. The event has evolved into a ‘triple whammy’ of industry activity. Advanstar, the organizers of Big Twin West, are generously putting up some $50,000 of cash prizes for the World Championship, in addition to covering the costs of actually staging the competition; Custom Chrome are holding their annual Dealer Show at the same time, with exclusive vendor/dealer hours and show access the day before the event opens to the rest of the industry; and record numbers of exhibitors have bought booth space at Big Twin West.
Above all though it is the dealers who will be attending, and the competitors who are entering the World Championship, that will make this event the success it ‘feels’ like it is headed for. DEADWOOD HANGIN’ CASE- – A civil trial in a case involving the ill-fated 2004 Sturgis Music Festival will begin as scheduled, according to court documents released this week. The case of TDG Communications v. Sturgis 2004 will commence with a motions hearing on Thursday, Nov. 3. A jury trial is scheduled for Nov. 7 and 8 in 4th Circuit Court, Lawrence County. Earlier this year TDG Communications sued Sturgis 2004, a Mississippi based company for services TDG provided to promote the Sturgis Music Festival. The company is suing for $48,000 in fees that were unpaid when the venture went sour in the middle of the 2004 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. TDG is also seeking punitive damages in the case, alleging that Rose never intended to pay them.Along with TDG’s claim, the suit also includes a claim by Ericka Hansen and Paul Barrow, of Kickstand Productions, Las Vegas. WORLD LAND SPEED RECORD RIDER WANTED–Denis Manning of BUB Enterprises in Grass Valley, California hasannounced that he has begun a search for an individual to pilot hisBUB streamliner at Bonneville in an attempt to break the motorcycleland speed record. Manning was the builder of the Harley-Davidson-powered streamliner that Cal Rayborn drove to the world’s record in1970 (as seen in On Any Sunday). Through the years he has built manymore machines and has had a role in numerous other records. In 2006, Denis plans to return to the salt with the goal of breakingthe motorcycle land speed record of 322 miles per hour currently heldby Dave Campos (the Easyriders team including Bandit). Individuals wishing to beconsidered can contact Manning at 530-477-7490. –from Rogue Billy Lane’s Blood Sweat & Gears Memorializes Fallen Soldier Brandon Sapp at Biketoberfest– With Brandon’s family present, Billy and his all star crew build a true custom in memory of Brandon Sapp. Billy Lane and the Blood Sweat & Gears crew brought the BSG Tour to a whole new level last week at Biketoberfest. On site at the all new Destination Daytona, Lane led his Blood Sweat & Gears builders through an amazing build with an incredibly emotional outcome. In front of thousands, Lane along with Kendall Johnson, Paul Cox, Aaron Greene and Mondo Lane worked on a bike in memory of fallen soldier Brandon Sapp. Brandon’s family was present throughout the build. John Sapp, Brandon’s dad along with his brothers and sisters watched as the bike came to life. Guest builder Jerry Covington joined Lane on stage to complete the bike too. Legendary painter Jon Kosmoski, founder of House of Kolor, agreed to paint the sheet metal. Jon received the sheet metal at the eleventh hour and began creating the paint that would memorialize Brandon on the bike. “When Billy suggested desert camouflage as part of the paint scheme, I thought, sure, that will be no problem. I soon realized how wrong I was. Camo is tough, it took me over six hours alone to tape the pattern off. When we finished the tank with Brandon’s image on it, I knew we had really done something great.” explained Kosmoski. Brandon’s father John Sapp agreed on stage Friday when Jon Kosmoski presented the finished sheet metal to him and Billy. “John, I want you to know that Brandon was with me the whole time. Each coat of clear I applied, he watched and followed me around the room. I feel like he approves too” Kosmoski told Sapp on stage. The entire Sapp family was speechless when the tank was unveiled. Lane added, “House of Kolor and Kosmoski are the very best, we needed the best for this bike, Brandon earned it”. Brandon Sapp joined the Army to add focus to his life. While serving in Iraq Brandon was killed at twenty one. He was driving a Bradley on a mission. During the mission it was said that he had a feeling about the route they were taking, he suggested they change routes at the last minute. His intuition pushed him to veer right. His quick thinking allowed nine other soldiers to come home alive. Brandon did not. He was killed instantly when a roadside bomb deployed beneath him in the Bradley. While serving, Brandon made a great friend, Timothy McClellan. “Mac” as he is called, is originally from Minnesota. Mac was invited by Billy to attend Biketoberfest and help him honor Brandon. Billy asked Mac to re-present the Red Cross Real Heroes Award to John Sapp in memory of Brandon. Mac agreed and drove to Daytona from Ft. Hood in Texas. With the bike build complete late in the day Saturday, Billy asked the builders to join him and the Sapp family to watch a video Lane had created to honor Brandon. The video played to hushed crowds and many, many tears. Brandon became everyone’s son at this moment. Billy asked attendees to please remember what these guys and gals are doing for us. Dying for our freedom. Billy started the bike and Paul Cox took the newly installed TP Engine through the gears during a crowd pleasing burn out on stage. Following the burn out, Billy presented the bike to Brandon’s dad John and asked him what he was going to do with it? Weeping, John stepped back and asked Mac what he thought of the bike. Mac sat on it with Brandon’s little brother Harry and said, “I love it and so would Brandon. This is all he ever talked about. His dream was to ride to Daytona with you on a custom bike. His dad sent him Easyriders magazines every month. He shared them with all of us.” With that said John stepped back and told Mac to take the bike and ride with Brandon forever. The crowd fell silent then audience members lined up to shake John’s hand and thank him for his sacrifice. The moment was unbelievable and powerful. The bikes built during the Tour are built for one purpose_ to thank military personnel serving to protect our freedom. FLORIDA STATS SHOW HELMETLESS RIDERS LESS LIKELY TO DIE Not only do recently released injury and fatality statistics for 2004 in the state of Florida dispel predictions of a blood bath following repeal of that state’s helmet law, but reveal that motorcyclists wearing helmets were more likely to sustain an injury or suffer a fatality than their non-helmeted counterparts.
According to the recently released, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles annual Traffic Crash Statistics Report for 2004, of the 388 motorcycle riders killed in crashes on Florida roads last year, over 51% were wearing helmets. The crash facts also demonstrate that riders wearing helmets were more likely to sustain injuries than non-helmeted riders.
In each of the statistical focus topics presented in the study, the percentage numbers were very close between helmeted and non- helmeted riders, except for non-injury crashes. The study stated that non- helmeted riders were 20% more likely to walk away from a crash without injuries than riders who were wearing helmets.
The huge increase in death and injury to non-helmeted motorcycle riders, predicted by NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) in a report released this summer, has not been substantiated, and in fact was disproved.
“The numbers are going to disappoint the proponents of helmet laws while simultaneously confirming the facts presented to the public by ABATE of Florida, Inc.,” stated James “Doc” Reichenbach, President of ABATE of Florida, Inc., who’s group lobbied strongly for motorcycle helmet reform in 2000. “ABATE of Florida has spent years focusing on motorcycle related safety issues, including crash prevention and stiffer penalties for negligent vehicle operators who kill and injure motorcycle riders.”
ABATE of Florida, Inc. is spreading the word about motorcycle safety and awareness through high school drivers education programs, posters, flyers, the presentation of a free Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program, along with a series of annual safety seminars for the motorcycle riding and non-riding public.
In conjunction with the Florida legislature, ABATE is putting Billboards throughout the state to encourage drivers to be aware of motorcycles and to drive alertly.
Reichenbach, who also serves as Chairman of the Board for the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), added that “The numbers from the crash report for 2004 may favor our point of view, but even one death is too many.”
HELMET LAW HURTS ITALIAN SCOOTER MAKER Aprilia, the Italian motorcycle conglomerate that also owns Moto Guzzi and Laverda, has been hurt financially in recent years by a combination of factors and is negotiating with several banks to try to avoid defaulting on its debt, according to Italian news media.
One contributing factor is that scooter sales in Italy, the company’s primary market, have fallen off since 2001 when a new law passed requiring scooter riders to wear helmets.
Aprilia sold fewer than 2,000 motorcycles in the United States in 2003, accounting for less than 0.25% of the U.S. motorcycle market. European sales are far more critical to the company’s financial health than its relatively small U.S. operation.Meanwhile, Ducati recently announced it is preparing to make an offer to buy Moto Guzzi from Aprilia, which purchased the Moto Guzzi brand in 2001 by outbidding Ducati.
MANDATORY RE-TRAINING FOR ALL RIDERS? In an address to the Fifth International Motorcycle Conference, the President of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Tim Buche called for a “safety renewal” program, which essentially would involve ongoing rider training for all motorcycle riders.
During his presentation to the Conference, held in Munich, Germany in conjunction with the Intermot Show, Buche addressed the fact that most research has shown little benefit from the current U.S. rider-training formula, which essentially calls for a single, basic training course.
Although such training, which is mandatory in some states for younger riders, appears to have an initial benefit lasting perhaps six months for new riders, it doesn’t have any measurable benefits in longer terms. Buche announced new research that looks at more parameters and will focus in particular on repetitive training, where a rider would follow up his initial training with additional courses tailored for those with more experience and skills. The MSF news release about the presentation notes that a possible federal motorcycle-safety study might also shed light on the topic.

CHINA LEADING THE WAY IN MOTORCYCLE SALES When most Americans think of motorcycle imports, they think of the Japanese brands Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki – the “Big Four”. But in fact, according to Business Wire, China has dominated the world’s production of motorcycles since 1994, churning out 14 million motorcycles in 2003. Exports surged from more than 3.4 million units (US$650 million) in 2002 to almost 9 million motorcycles (US$1.45 billion) last year–a phenomenal increase of 123 percent in value, and representing 48% of the global output. This is astounding growth even for an industry that has shown consistent strength.
Chinese motorcycles and associated products are now exported to some 200 countries, many of them in the developing regions of Southeast Asia, South Asia and Africa, and developed countries in the Middle East. Sales to the favored U.S. and European markets are also increasing.
MOTORCYCLES DAMAGE HEARING When the band Steppenwolf sang of heavy metal thunder in “Born to be Wild,” their classic ode to the freewheeling biker lifestyle, they equated rocking out to the new electric music of their time with the ear-pounding experience of riding a motorcycle. The notion that loud music can damage hearing is common knowledge, but the noise produced by motorcycles can pose similar risk to riders, University of Florida hearing experts’ caution.
In an informal survey of 33 motorcycles, UF audiologists at the College of Public Health and Health Professions have found nearly half produced sounds above 100 decibels when throttled up — equivalent in intensity to a loud rock concert or a chainsaw.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health cautions that exposure to noise at 100 decibels is safe for only 15 minutes. Permanent hearing loss can occur with prolonged exposure to any noise measuring 85 decibels or above. Although noise-induced hearing loss is permanent, it is preventable.
Although motorcycle helmets don’t provide any significant protection against noise, inexpensive foam earplugs, available at drug stores, can reduce sound levels by 20 decibels to 25 decibels.
Riders should pay attention to the warning signs of noise-induced hearing loss: a ringing sound in the ears immediately after exposure, and hearing voices and other sounds as muffled.
HELLO? Giving birth to a new catch phrase: “Hang up and RIDE!”, motorcyclists can join the cell phone rage now that there’s a new audio headset designed to fit under their helmets while they rumble down the road.
The “scala-rider” from Cardo Systems (www.cardowireless.com) is a Bluetooth headset that includes a wind-resistant microphone that provides clear audio for listening and talking while riding at speeds of up to 75 mph. The scala-rider also allows users to accept or reject incoming calls without letting go of the handlebars, by using voice controls.
WEIRD NEWS: Helmet Saves Rider From Lightening Strike. A Texas man is recovering from an accident in Colorado after being hit in the head by lightening. A gold chain and crucifix melted around his neck and burned a rope pattern in his skin when a lightning bolt struck Jason Crawford in the head while he and his brother were riding dirt bikes in Gunnison County, Colorado.
The bolt melted part of his helmet, fractured his skull and left burn scars on his chest and left arm. Still, Crawford knows it could have been worse. Doctors told him if he hadn’t had his helmet on, he would have died. Even with the helmet, it took 30 stitches to close a wound in his head caused by the freak lighting strike.
Jason Crawford, 31, and his brother John, 36, from Houston, Texas, were riding dirt bikes in Taylor Park recently when the bolt came out of the blue. Jason said they were on Italian Creek Pass when it started sprinkling and the bolt came without warning. John told the Grand Junction Sentinel that the lightning strike caused Jason to do a back flip off his motorbike and twist in the air before he landed on the ground, unable to move.
John said he didn’t know what to do and started screaming for help. Incredibly, a U.S. Forest Service ranger was nearby, heard the yells and came to their aid. He quickly used his two-way radio to call for an ambulance. Then several other dirt-bikers rode up and one was a doctor who checked out Jason’s vital signs. Luckily, his heart hadn’t stopped beating and Jason finally managed to talk. His first words after the accident were, “Don’t let me die.”
He was airlifted to a hospital in Grand Junction where he was treated and released a few days later, but doctors still don’t know the extent of the damage, due to scar tissue and unhealed injuries. He still can’t hear in one ear.
His brother, John, said it was a fluke that the lightning hit.
“What are the chances of being struck by lightning on a moving bike,” John told the Sentinel. “You can’t prepare for that.”
TASMANIAN BIKERS LOBBY AGAINST MOTORCYCLE LEVY Bikers in Tasmania, Australia successfully lobbied against a proposed $15-a-year levy to motorcycle licenses to fund a government sponsored safety campaign. The State Government’s controversial push to introduce the levy on motorcyclists to fund a safety program failed in the Legislative Council, due largely to objections raised by the motorcycle community.
Nine Independent MLCs voted against the legislation that they argued discriminated against motorcyclists and would set a dangerous user-pays precedent to the State.The Tasmanian Motorcycle Council led a strong lobby against the proposed law and said that motorcyclists should not have to pay for the strategy’s administration, arguing that it was inappropriate that $405,000 of levy funds would go to cover administrative costs.
The leader of the Government in the Upper House, Michael Aird, said that the Tasmanian Motorcycle Safety Strategy 2005-06 would now have to be abandoned.
Tasmanian Greens infrastructure spokesman Kim Booth congratulated the motorcycle council on its demand for equality in road safety training.”The responsibility is now back on the Labor Government to ensure that the necessary road safety training is still made available,” he said.State Opposition leader Rene Hidding said that the defeat of the bill showed the Government had failed to adequately consult the motorcycle community.

STEALTH REPORT–The air has a hint of fall in it around here and the temps are cool but there is still some good riding weather left. The toy runs are coming up and we attended one last weekend. Where did the summer go?
Here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS we have a rolling chassis for the 71 shovel project. The project is being built on a Santee wishbone frame, stock rake, no stretch. A Dave Mann centerfold style bike.We may have a couple more projects coming in soon. You never know but that is what makes this a great adventure, the unknown! One thing for sure is that things change real quick. It is just another roll of the dice!
Even though it is the fall season it seems our schedule is full. This Saturday we are headed to “The Gentlemen’s Club” annual “BikeBOOBerfest” bike show. This is one of the top bike shows in the Charlotte area. A couple of weeks down the road the CBA hold their annual fall bike show and swap meet.
We will have a booth set up there. One thing about trying to run a shop and keep it going is that you seem to never have enough time, but that is a good thing. Sometimes you just have to take a few minutes for yourself, to go for a ride and clear your head.
On a personal note “The Meanest” became a grandma this past weekend and I guess I became a step grandpa, boy that sounds strange? Alex was born Sunday Oct. 23rd. Mom and baby are doing fine. One last thing to add to the list of things going on, we sold our house and are moving into another house Nov. 7th. Did I mention that there never seems to be enough time?

Bad Shit Happens–when Bandit travels, or maybe I just have a harder time dealing with normal shit, so it seems like bad shit. I dunno, but yesterday I was feeling like a rain cloud was hanging over me. Sitting in my daughters school office with a sour face like I?m the only one in the world with problems; kid and otherwise, when in walks a friend I haven?t seen in months. She had an emergency C-section 8 days ago, the baby is still in the hospital and she had to go to the school because of two troublesome teenagers. She and her husband run their own business, so she can?t even take any time off. By the time I was finished talking to her, I felt like a real dipshit for ever feeling sorry for myself, for my so called problems. I do not have problems. I told myself, ?I?ll never complain again?.
So, today is a new day and I?ve faced it with patience and strength. Speaking of patience and strength, Bandit is at the end of the La Carrera Panamericana and has endured almost two-weeks of challenges. Cars burning and crashing around them, but every night I get a call that they made it safely. Last night he said they came in third in their class for the fourth day in a row. Quite an accomplishment you would think, but I should mention there are only three cars left in his class?
Regardless, he?s a winner in my book, and I can?t wait for that winner to get his ass home. Like you can?t wait for me to get my ass in gear and do the news? here you go.

Motorcycle Photography exhibit and ride-in show Love Ride Weekend–For something great to do on the Saturday before the Love Ride, ride out to Old Pasadena to the Mendenhall Sobieski Gallery for a motorcycle Kulture photography exhibition, celebrity bikes from the likes of Chica, Matt Hotch, Russell Mitchell, Roland Sands and Paul Yaffe in the gallery and a ride-in bike show outside. For the occasion, photographer Michael Lichter will be displaying limited edition black and white and color photographs from his25+ years of shooting the biker lifestyle all across America. His workchronicles events dating back to the 1970’s as well as smaller gatherings right to the present. While Michael has exhibited in many museums, this will be his inaugural show with the Mendenhall Sobieski Gallery, which represents his limited edition photographic prints. A portion of the proceeds from sales will go to the Love Ride for their charities.
The show will be open November 2 through November 13 with an artist reception Saturday November 12 (Love-Ride weekend) from 5pm – 7:30 pm. BE CAREFUL WHO YOU DO BUSINESS WITH–GALESBURG – A meeting between police and the Knox County state’s attorney will determine if motorcycle builder Chip Miyler will face criminal charges for allegedly collecting money from customers just before going bankrupt.
Galesburg Police Department Investigator Thomas LaFollette said Friday he will meet with State’s Attorney Paul Mangieri on Tuesday to discuss the 18 complaints he has received from customers of the now bankrupt Mid-West Choppers, which Miyler owned with his wife, Chrissy.
Customers have told police Miyler asked for large sums of money to finish their $25,000 to $60,000 motorcycles just before filing bankruptcy.
The couple filed bankruptcy on the 5-year-old business Oct. 14 then filed for personal bankruptcy the next day.
LaFollette said he expects to get at least eight more complaints from customers who paid for the custom motorcycles, which recently brought Miyler’s shop national attention.
Ted Sjurseth, founder of America’s 9-11 Foundation, based in Virginia, visited Galesburg on Friday to find out if he will ever see the $30,000 he said he paid Miyler to build a Sept. 11-themed motorcycle the charity planned to auction next year.
“We think we lost it,” Sjurseth said of the money. “We’re an unsecured creditor.”
Miyler built Sjurseth a Sept. 11-themed motorcycle that was auctioned off in August. After seeing the success of the last one, Sjurseth commissioned another that was scheduled to be done by Thanksgiving, he said.
The $30,000 check was given to Miyler on Sept. 13 and was deposited two days later, said Sjurseth, who feels Miyler had no intention of ever building the bike because parts hadn’t been ordered.
But three former Mid-West employees plan to build the motorcycle themselves and start their own custom motorcycle shop by the spring.
Doug Niles, former Mid-West Choppers sales associate, has decided to go into the custom motorcycle business with two other former employees.
Speed Street Custom Cycles will be located at Tompkins and Kellogg streets, where the three plan to build choppers and pro-street motorcycles.
“At this point, our main concern is to get (the 9-11 bike) done,” said Niles, who wants to distance himself from the controversy surrounding Mid-West Choppers.
Sjurseth met Friday with Niles in Galesburg to discuss the new Dec. 15 deadline for the bike and then met with an attorney in Monmouth hired by the foundation.
And while it’s still unclear if Sjurseth will recoup his $30,000, he said he is confident in the new team of builders.
“These guys wanted to turn a wrong into a right,” he said.

ANOTHER PRO TUNING CENTER EMERGES–LA CROSSE , WI (October 18, 2005) – S&S Cycle is proud to announce the opening of the third Pro Tuning Center in the United States . Technicians from Hal’s Speed Shop in New Berlin , Wisconsin , completed their week long training sessions on Variable Fuel Injection and Super Sidewinder service to earn the certification.Pro Tuning Center certification is achieved when two or more VFI and Sidewinder qualified technicians are on staff at a given S&S dealer–equipped with the proper tools and dynamometer in order to become certified. These courses give students the ins-and-outs of performance, oiling systems, carburetors, exhaust and tuning on S&S engines and Harley-Davidson engines modified with S&S components. All of the tuning and performance verification is done on SuperFlow dynamometers and the technicians utilize a complete shop full of MAC Tools during their training.
“The very first thought I had as the training started was that even though this is a world-class training facility, it really has a relaxed atmosphere,” Said Rob Schopf, Performance Manager at Hal’s Speed Shop. “I like how the shop is set up to make a technician feel at home and more in his element, even though it is really a classroom-it makes learning easier when you are comfortable.”

CODY, Wyo. – The owners of Cody Custom Cycle are in hog heaven after a lawsuit filed by Harley-Davidson alleging trademark infringement was dismissed last week on the eve of pre-trial hearings.Harley-Davidson Motor Company Group, Inc. filed suit in U.S. District Court in Casper against Cody Custom Cycle, also known as 10-94 Enterprises LC, and owners Ray Burns and Kathy Redish.
Filed in July, the company claimed that Cody Custom Cycle used the Harley-Davidson trademarked name and images without permission, a charge the owners and their attorney denied then and now.”We always said we’d done nothing wrong, and they never proved otherwise,” said Burns. “We were right then, and we’re right now, and we’re not changing the way we do business.”Attorney Laurence Stinson represented Cody Custom Cycle and said the case was “dismissed by the court after the parties agreed to a certain resolution.”He said, “One of the things they were sued for was selling Harley parts and using the name to say they service Harley motorcycles, and they continue to have that right.”Redish said she’s glad to have the issue behind her, particularly since she and Burns, who are married, were named personally in the case.”It was my ultimate fear that they would end up with everything I owned, including my horse,” she said. “But we’ve received tremendous community support.”She said local people and bikers passing through donated money to a legal defense fund for the shop, which has been in Cody since 1994.And though she regrets being forced to bear the cost of mounting a legal defense, she credits Stinson with “championing our cause and going beyond what other attorneys would have done.”Redish said publicity about the lawsuit, which was filed shortly before thousands of bikers passed through Cody on their way to an annual gathering in Sturgis, S.D., may have helped pressure

It’s our belief it backfired on Harley.”Burns said he was happy to avoid a protracted trial with costly delays.”Anyone can file a lawsuit and bleed you dry,” he said. “Harley has an army of lawyers and our resources are very finite. We always knew we’d win, but we were afraid we’d be having our victory party in a cardboard box.”Harley-Davidson, a century-old brand with a devoted following, has a policy of aggressively defending its trademarks. It saw revenues last year of more than $5 billion, with $224 million in sales of clothes and general merchandise, according to the company’s 2004 annual report.In 1994, the company applied for a trademark on what it claimed was the distinctive sound of its motorcycles. Competitors contested the filing and after six years of debate, Harley-Davidson dropped the claim.
Representatives from Harley-Davidson did not return messages left over the weekend.

Judge threatens to dismiss Hell Angels’ indictments–AZ Central.com, AZ – Judge David Campbell called for Friday’s hearing in a sharply worded order suggesting that indictments against members of the biker organization might be dismissed if the U.S. Attorney’s Office fails to abide by due-process rules.Campbell described his order as “an extraordinary step of requiring the chief of the criminal division of the United States Attorney’s Office . . . to appear in court and personally certify that the government has complied with its disclosure obligations . . . advertisement”Statements made to the court by counsel for the government have been inaccurate, inconsistent and sometimes legally incorrect,” the judge wrote. “The court has concluded . . . that a higher level of attention is necessary if this case is to be brought to trial.”Prosecutors apparently responded in a memorandum, but it was filed under seal. A spokeswoman in U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton’s office declined to comment.In July 2003 federal agents and Valley police raided Hells Angels’ homes, businesses and chapter houses, arresting 16 club members and associates under a federal grand jury indictment for murder, gunrunning, drug-dealing, racketeering and other crimes.The undercover probe known as Operation Black Biscuit netted three Hells Angel chapter presidents in the state. Agents seized 600 firearms, plus stolen vehicles, drugs, club records and paraphernalia.As part of the sting, undercover investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives infiltrated the club and were invited to become members.Similar cases are being tried against dozens of Hells Angels in Nevada, California and other states.Defense attorneys have complained about misconduct by undercover operatives in the Arizona case, and about the prosecution’s failure to disclose evidence that must be shared under federal justice rules.
Joe Abodeely, counsel for defendant Craig T. Kelly, filed a motion for dismissal this week based on prosecutors’ conduct during 20 months and 10 hearings.”It is painfully clear that the government has not and does not intend to comply with its legal requirements in keeping with due process, fair play and with this court’s orders,” Abodeely wrote.In another court filing, Patricia Gitre, attorney for defendant Kevin Augustiniak, noted that the government employed three paid informers with backgrounds of violence and drug abuse.One of them failed to tell investigators that he participated in a murder that is integral to the case. A second informer concealed the fact that, while working undercover, he used methamphetamine and beat people up. A third operative was arrested and removed from the probe after state police caught him with methamphetamines.
Gitre claims those “snitches” made the government’s case, yet prosecutors have withheld volumes of information that raises doubt about their credibility. She argues that all three operatives have motive to lie for the government, which has given them money, plea deals and protection in return for cooperation.
Keith Vercauteren, the prosecutor, contends in legal filings that the government has only withheld materials that are irrelevant, unavailable or not yet subject to release under court rules. In some cases, Vercauteren argues, the defense wants information that would jeopardize ongoing investigations or the safety of informers.Judge Campbell stopped short of finding that prosecutors have acted in “bad faith,” but warned that the government must provide an “unequivocal confirmation” that defendants are getting all required information.
Campbell included an exhaustive review of the two-year battle over pre-trial evidence, noting that prosecutors claimed in January 2004 that they had “given all of the discovery” to defense lawyers. Since then, the government has produced thousands of additional documents, wiretap tapes, video recordings and other evidence.The sixteen defendants are scheduled for trial in February. A key issue appears to be whether the Hells Angels is a criminal racketeering enterprise.HAMC members and attorneys claim there is no statewide hierarchy for the biker gang, just independent clubs whose members sometimes break the law.Federal investigators say the Hells Angels organization is a violent criminal gang that operates as a syndicate, dealing in guns, drugs and theft for profit.

VTRace Girl?s Weekend Update–Last weekend (Oct. 12-14) Valerie raced two Custom Performance Turbo VRods at the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Nationals Presented by Drag Specialties at the Rock, Rockingham Dragway. She attempted qualification in the Super Eliminator (10.9 index) and Super Sport (10.3 index) classes. She broke out in the Super Eliminator class and did not qualify, but posted a promising 10.718 @ 121.94 mph. In the Super Sport class she qualified 16th (10.714 @ 130.13 mph) and gave the Number One S&S qualifier David Hope a run for his money

Bikernet without Bandit, is pretty boring, I know. I miss him too when he leaves but it does give me a chance to work at a slower pace and catch up on administrative stuff. It?s funny, for being a web-based business, we don?t have a laptop computer. When we travel, we?re unplugged. We had grand ideas about updates while he?s racing across Mexico, but in reality, he has no way of sending photos or emails. Tomorrow I?m gonna remedy that and buy a laptop. A little late for the La Carrera Panamerican, but in the future Bikernet won?t get stale when we both travel.
Speaking of the La Carerra, Bandit and Christian made it to Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico on Tuesday without a hitch. Yesterday and today they had to go through inspections, navigating classes and fix or buy what wasn?t acceptable. Tomorrow the race begins. STEALTH REPORT–Last weekend the STEALTH BIKE WORKS crew headed to “THE ROCK” for the A.H.D.R.A races in Rockingham NC. The weather was great and the bikes were hot, some hitting 215 mph!
Back at the shop we have dismantled the 71 shovel and we waiting on our frame. The old shovel got its first bath in a long time last week. I will be sending pictures as the build takes place.
These new EPA laws have me all confused. This law is another loss of freedom in what is supposed to be the land of the free. It doesn’t make sense to me but as usual big dollars and big business are at the root of this. This law makes it hard for small shops to survive and I really wonder who is behind that part, well not really. We all probably know the answer to that. You can buy all the stock bikes from the big name motorcycle makers you want. So does that give you a hint? If you have not read Bandit’s book “Orwell” check it out. This law is close to home as far as the book goes.
On a lighter note, when you run a shop or work at a shop everyday, you hear some funny things. A guy comes in and hands me a lockwasher and says “I need one of these, this one is no good,” I look at the lockwasher and ask “What is wrong with this one?” He looks at me like I am stupid and says ” Don’t you see the crack in this one and it is bent!” I just look at him and say “Oh yeah, I didn’t see it,” and proceeded to give him another lockwasher!
Strange but true!

Mandatory Rider Training–The Motorcycle Safety Foundation is looking to pass laws that will force motorcycle riders to attend one of their schools and also make a lot of money for them in the process.It is imperative that everyone involved in motorcycling use what ever means they have to see that this does not happen. This proposed legislation Will Apply To You!I would suggest letters to your legislator’s now requesting they vote against any such move should it come before them. If it has not been brought up in your state this move could stop it from coming up at all.

DAYTONA BEACH — George Deffenbaugh and Mike Sayer were keeping one eye on the leather-clad women strolling along Main Street and another eye on Hurricane Wilma updates on TV.”I’m trying to figure out when to run,” Deffenbaugh said Wednesday from his comfortable perch on the bench in front of Dirty Harry’s Bar.A Biketoberfest regular, Deffenbaugh found a positive aspect to what he assumes will be a storm-shortened weekend.”This will probably be the first Biketoberfest that I’ve gone home with money still in my pocket,” the Gainesville man said.”We’ve sat through rain before, but a hurricane is something different.”Anxiety about a Category 5 hurricane making a beeline toward Florida was forcing bikers on Daytona Beach’s Main Street to rethink their plans about the annual event.Michelle Vancil, who co-owns a biker shop in Lakeland, came to Biketoberfest with her husband for a quick visit Tuesday. “We know we have to be home to board up,” she said.Tourism officials tried to reassure the skittish, in spite of the uncertainty of the storm path.”We are in a wait-and-see mode,” said Georgia Turner of the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We don’t have plans to cancel or postpone (Biketoberfest.)”Officials at Daytona Speedway Corp., site of many scheduled festival events, also were monitoring the storm. “We’re still on for everything this weekend,” said David Talley, a spokesman.State emergency-management officials talked with local agencies about how Hurricane Wilma could affect the thousands of people expected to converge on the Daytona Beach area for Biketoberfest.Craig Fugate, director of the state Division of Emergency Management, said it was unclear Wednesday how far north the hurricane would go as it crosses Florida. He said officials have until today to determine whether the hurricane will affect the event.”It’s too early to say that it’s going to be directly impacted,” Fugate said. “But we’re watching it.”Ocean Resorts, which operates 14 beachfront hotels, got a few biker guest cancellations Wednesday, but they were quickly replaced by new reservations from people fleeing from South Florida, said Doug Kosarek, the senior vice president.
Kosarek said he got the feeling that South Florida residents were trying to make the best of a bad situation. If they had to flee their homes, they were going to Biketoberfest.”It’s a different kind of day-tripper,” he said.Ocean Resorts, which owns hotels as varied as the Plaza Resort & Spa and the Mayan Inn, still has about 10 percent of its rooms vacant. Evacuees who arrive Sunday won’t have to pay Biketoberfest rates, Kosarek said.He said many people probably won’t decide what to do until the last minute.Bobby Honeycutt, general manager of Froggy’s Saloon on Main Street, was worried for his staff. The bar hires about 100 extra employees for Biketoberfest, and their livelihoods depend on the event.In a worst-case scenario, Honeycutt said, “They will get a regular paycheck, but it won’t compare to how much customers will tip.”Sandra Manglani, owner of T-Shirt Paradise on Main Street, said she was praying for good weather. “We leave it to God,” she said.Liz Swaine, a biker from Louisiana, found Hurricane Wilma to be ironic.As an executive assistant to the mayor of Shreveport, La., Swaine has been putting in 60-hour work weeks since Hurricane Katrina sent a “tidal wave of evacuees” to her city.Biketoberfest seemed like a perfect opportunity to get away from Katrina-related troubles. That was before she found out about Hurricane Wilma.
“It makes no sense to come to Florida to escape hurricanes,” Swaine said with a laugh.With rain in the forecast, Swaine and her husband, Steve Culp, plan to make an early exit .”It’s hard (to have fun) when you’re all wet,” she said.

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM OPENS ITS DOORS IN HONOR OF PEARL HOEL’S 100th BIRTHDAY– October 2005 – – On 10 November, Pearl Hoel, the First Lady of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, would have celebrated her 100th birthday. In honor of one of motorcycling most beloved personalities, and in recognition of her support, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame will host its annual Open House, waiving admission fees for the entire day.
“The Board of Directors was looking for a way to celebrate the life of this incredible woman,” said Pepper Massey-Swan, Museum Director. “While we miss her, we didn’t want her birthday to be a sad occasion. We wanted to remind people how much this gentle soul impacted our community and motorcycling, allowing them to learn more about something Pearl was passionate about, and the legacy she helped create.”
When the Museum opened its doors in 2001, Pearl Hoel was one of the first to step forward, loaning memorabilia and historic photos, helping to ensure the Museums success. As the wife of Pappy Hoel (the person credited with founding the Sturgis Rally), Pearl had a vast collection of vintage clothing, rare race programs, Indian Motorcycle memorabilia and photos that document the Rally’s humble beginnings and rise to one of the largest, and most famous, motorcycle events in the world.
When Pearl passed last February, one of the ways her son Jack chose to keep her memory alive was to allow the Hoel collection to remain at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum, even adding to it. “We feel Pearl is here with us still because so much of her life, and her family’s life, is documented and displayed here,” continued Massey-Swan. “I encourage people who have not yet had the opportunity to take some time during the day and wander through the Museum. The community has a great asset here, and an incredible legacy, all because Pappy and Pearl hosted that little race 65 years ago.”
The history of motorcycling, and how it relates to Sturgis and the Sturgis Rally, is rich and diverse. The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is proud to share the story.
