THE BEST PROTEST SIGN AT THE SEPTEMBER RALLY IN WASHINGTON–“Would someone please just give him a blow job so we can have him impeached?!”
CHARITY BIKE BUILD 2006–My name is Jason McCudden, I am the owner of South Side Kustoms. I am a new custom motorcycle shop in the Buffalo, NY area. As being a part of this community, as a business owner I would like to do my part to put something back into it. So together with Jesse, the owner of Club Diablo, we are working with the Food Bank of Western New York to make Charity Bike Build 2006 a reality.
Starting May 25th 2006 South Side Kustoms and Club Diablo will be hosting a weekly bike night. The main feature of our weekly event will be a custom motorcycle built by South Side Kustoms that will be raffled off at the end of the summer season. All proceeds are to benefit the Food Bank of Western New York and The Make A Wish Foundation.
In recent years, motorcycle events have been huge and continue to grow every year. So we feel this is a prime opportunity to reach this sector of our community with this spectacular event. Many biker events are known to sponsor charities so we know this a group of people that care about people in our community.
Tickets are going to be sold for this bike at $20.00 each. They will be available thru South Side Kustoms, Club Diablo and the Food Bank of WNY. Every measure will be taken to make sure this charity event will be a huge success. Between all parties involved we plan on taking full advantage of every media available to promote this, by means of television, radio, magazines, handing out flyers at public events. But in order to make this charitable event a reality we need help from you, our suppliers, local businesses and community supporters.
The following pages are a breakdown of parts and monies needed to make this Charity Bike Build a reality. Every and any donations are greatly appreciated. We have set up a sponsorship program to fit everyone’s bracket.
South Side Kustoms and Club Diablo would like to thank everyone in advance for your support and generous donations. We know Charity Bike Build 2006 will be a success and we look forward to working with you on this event and many more to come.

OPEN LETTER TO THE EPA, IF IT APPLIES–This may apply to you or some one you know. It will definitely apply to you in the future. You can change some it to apply to your situation but letters should go to legislators about this.
— ROGUE
To Whom It May Concern:
I own and manage _______________ (enter company name here), a ________________ (motorcycle dealership, motorcycle service center, motorcycle parts provider) and a member of the local business community. I want to make you aware of what is happening to one of the fastest growing industries in our region and directly impacting our business success. Motorcycle sales and registrations are reaching all time highs and the custom parts and other related businesses are growing along with this increase in sales. While revenues are up and this mode of transportation continues to provide possibly the single largest fuel conservation effort in the country and much of the world, the United States government is approaching severely deflating this source of jobs, economic revenue and fuel conservation by changing the standards under which my small business can modify or produce motorcycles.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has chosen to ignore the best interests of the motorcycle small business community in their decision making process. The EPA specifically targeted the motorcycle aftermarket business sector by limiting the number and type of motorcycles we can produce. These new standards are impossible to comply with and successfully run the type of business that I do. We hope, in our support of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, to correct this injustice before the implementation of emission standards enacted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which are so unreasonably strict that our small business will not be able to maintain current personnel and operate at a profitable level.
The rule they are enacting to control emissions is far too broad in its expansive restrictions, far beyond actually controlling emissions. Their proposal would:
* Restrict the manufacturing of motorcycles in volumes less than 3000/yr virtually eliminating the currently booming and very popular custom chopper industry
* Cease the modification or customization of motorcycles by their owners or local service center
*Apply these unreasonable restrictions without giving the industry the opportunity to implement it’s own emission controlling policies
* Deplete a multi-billion dollar industry and the jobs it creates and supports.
Motorcycle consumers depend on my small business to fix what they cannot on their motorcycles and/or supply parts they can install themselves. My business is an important link between keeping motorcyclist’s wheels rolling and also to provide these consumers with a choice as to what changes they want to make to personalize their motorcycles, no matter what brand they decide they feel comfortable riding. We independent shops and consumers need each other to survive the future with the freedoms we deserve. Many consumers do not wish to maintain a relationship with a franchised dealer for their repair and modification work, and undoubtedly deserve the right to other choices.
The EPA operates under its own authority, with little or no Congressional oversight which is why the motorcycle small business community desperately needs your help. Through congressional pressure we are hoping to keep the new rules from eliminating our exploding cottage industry and associated jobs. With your support and the help of other elected officials and community leaders we can stop the rash deterioration of arguably one of today’s most uniquely American industries.
The new regulations will eventually put us out of business. Only the manufacturer’s dealers, namely the industry’s largest few, will be able to work on these bikes because of the anti-tampering provisions of the Emissions Standards rule. Eventually, no one other than the dealer, not even the owner, will be able to work on these bikes. The only modification of motorcycles with the new EPA rules will be, in the EPA’s own words color and chrome. Without your help, I may be forced to close my business entirely. Please do not hesitate to contact the Motorcycle Riders Foundation in Washington D.C. should you have questions or need any additional information.
As true aficionados of clean air and the great outdoors, we riders and business persons in the motorcycle industry fully recognize and support the need to control noise and emissions and as such are willing and anxious to form a nationwide effort to develop and install self-monitoring policies and guidelines for industry improvements to protect the precious environment that we and our children live and ride in.
Thank you for your attention and prompt action toward this very important matter.
Regards,
–from Rogue VAGABOND CHOPPER COMPANY REPORT–The shop was on Speed Tv’s Corbin’s Ride On back in August and things are going good-More guys that want a chick to build them a bike than I thought there would be. I am actually really happy about that as most women irritate me, slightly hehehe- well I am hoping that you will be here in South Florida for the Dec HR Finals. I would love to meet you after decades of reading your stuff. I will be riding my newest build to the event and I would love to show you a simple but not so simple chopper- that you would appreciate. I thought of you today as I looked up to show someone the article you wrote about David Mann many years ago. It is on my office wall. Don Rogers said that my office looked like a David Mann museum. I liked that piece when it first came out as it allowed me to get to personally know him to through your writing. He was an incredible artist and I am sure an even more incredible human being. I look forward to hearing from you when you get time. Hey again thank you for that spot in the magazine back in April that helped set up the things that have happened since. Always my pleasure, BIKERNET STEALTH BIKE WORKS REPORT FROM NC–Last weekend STEALTH BIKE WORKS was at the annual C.B.A swap meet here in Charlotte. The swap meet is always a good time. A time to see old friends, a time to swap stories, some true, some not so true. One thing that stuck in my mind from the swap meet was how many people I saw with the “Flipped H-D patches” and even a couple of trailers were sporting “Flipped Bar+Shields.” It looks like that “Big Business, Corporate America attitude” may be starting to catch up with old H-D? While at the swap meet, we were located across from a helmet vendor. It was amazing to watch how many people put the helmet on backwards while trying them on?????? It has been a couple of weeks since I have sent anything in. “The Meanest” and I moved in to the new house, along with our pit bull puppy J.C. Things are starting to get organized. As far as SBW goes we are chugging along. We have “dished” the sides, or ” flipped” the sides on a set of 5 gallon fat bob tanks. They are cool! There are pics of them in the Sunday post. We already have an order to do a set for a customer. If anyone else is interested give us a call at 704-882-0889. We also have in the works a rack to put your detachable tour-pak on when you are not using it. This rack is made by Alternative Machine and will be availiable at SBW. It is amazing when you open a shop how everyone thinks you are rolling in money! This is anything but the truth. It is also amazing to hear how opening a shop is “everyone’s dream.” I guess what you see on T.V. has made it that way. For the ones who are true to themselves, I say go for it. To the ones who think they will be rich in six months, I say think again. If you are not doing it for the love of doing it, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. This is a tough business, you earn your keep and you earn your business, it doesn’t come easy. There are a lot of risks involved with no guarantees. There are sacrifices you have to make everyday, some of which are very hard to do. The question you have to keep answering is “How bad do you want it?” Another thing is that there never is enough money to do everything all at once, so you have to pick and choose as you go. Again there are no promises or guarantees. I go with my gut a lot and some may say that is the wrong way to go, but I have never been one for reports and charts. To me this takes your heart and soul out of it and that just isn’t me. It is funny how your perspective on things change when you open your own shop. I used to think a long time ago that everything H-D was cool and I would look forward to the next “new” item they would come out with. I have lost all faith in what they are about. Those flipped patches did look cool! The really cool stuff comes from the aftermarket shops. The shops you see with the lights on late at night. They are there because they love what they do. Support your local aftermarket shop. Think about what it would be like without them! Right now we have two ground up projects and a shop project going on, so we have surprised some people and maybe ourselves a little bit. As winter approaches we are planning on getting our name out even more. We will be at the Easyrider Bike Show here in Charlotte in February. Yeah, so far it has been a roller coaster ride and we are still hanging on and we probably will never get rich, but I guess we are already rich in a lot of other ways. Having the chance to do what we love to do on our own terms, doing things our way, and doing what we love! Yeah, I guess you can’t buy any of that at any price! Until next week, RIDE! –STEALTHMAN SUCKER PUNCH UPDATE–I have attached a few pictures of the SPS bike thatwill be in the world championship in Vegas thisweekend along with a few other pics for the Thurs.news. We look forward to a complete build-to-feature on Bikernet. –Ken NEW KENDON LIFT–No……………you need a new lift……………..if you have the old round tube lift. The new lift (photo enclosed) has square tubing used in the scissors (far less labor to assemble) rather than the labor intensive round tube scissors previously used. Attached is a photo of the chopper lift latest version. Both the front and rear section can be detached to remove the front and rear wheels. We also have a “builders kit” that holds a frame securely allowing ongoing construction on the lift even when the motorcycle has no fork or rear suspension. The builder kit hold the frame suspended just above the lift surface.(The builder kit BOLTS DOWN on the lift for a secure work station). –Buck IS THAT THE NEWS OR WHAT?–This industry in 2006 will shake like an earthquake. There’s so much going on. I’m currently working with Gard Hollinger of LA Chop Rods and Scott Long of Central Coast Customs on a movie or television show treatment. Ya never know. Motorcycles are on a upswing from so many directions, yet we’re facing restrictions like never before. We’ll keep you posted of anything that moves, good or bad. I’m working on an article on Boss Hoss and Saxon for the next American Big Twin Dealer rag. I need to write my wild vintage car race report and there’s something I’m forgetting. Oh, two more bike features are headed to the site. One is a complete build from Departure Bike Works in Richmond, VA. You’ll love this bike. We’re beginning to nail down our Bonneville effort. We’re running two Bikes: A turbo charged V-Rod by Custom Performance in Phoenix and a 45 Flathead we’ll build here, with Departure Bike Works and of course my Panhead sport bike with Accurate Engineering, but the competition in the Big Twin area is fierce and I don’t expect any records, just the adrenaline rush of getting down the salt. Hang on for reports. The last chapter of the first Chance Hogan book was posted in the Cantina last week in the Books section. You can read the entire unedited book now, as a member and several other books. Next year I will edit, rewrite and publish the dam thing. Hang on. Have a helluva weekend. –Bandit

WELD INTRODUCE NEW SIZES AND STYLES IN CHROME–Kansas City, MO- Another first from Weld is their new 17″ x 12″ one-piece forged billet wheel that was designed, engineered and manufactured specifically for Avon’s new 330 tire series. Mark Finnie, Vice President/GM of Weld’s Motorcycle Division stated, “Unlike the 2-piece 18″ x 14” Monster wheel that we developed exclusively for the new 360 series tires, this new wheel is actually produced from a single billet forging and has been tried and tested by many of the world’s top custom bike builders.
Weld’s latest additions to the “wide tire wars” (17″ x 12″ and 18″ x 14″ wheels) are now both offered in luxurious chrome, backed by an exclusive 5-warranty or show quality polish. No other “wide wheel” manufacture can make this claim! Both of these wheels are now available in the following styles: Recluse, Starburst, Redneck, Blade, Trotta, HotMatch and Creations. Additional styles are on the drawing board and will be announced soon. Both of these “wide tire” wheels are available in several different hub applications including driveside, split hub driveside and standard applications.
“We have always been an innovator and leading force in all of our other market segments and this same philosophy has been applied to our motorcycle division.” “It takes a “family” of experts to design something that hasn’t been seen yet”, Greg added.
Weld is also known for their revolutionary “Flare Series” wheels which have much more dimension to them and appear to have a 3D effect. All the “flare series” front wheels have an integrated hub and the rears are either pulley/hub or driveside. You must use Weld’s rotors and pulleys on this series of wheels. The “Flare Series” wheels are available in the following sizes: 18″ x 10″, 18″ x 8.5″, 18″ x 5″, 18″ x 3.5″, 21″ x 3.25″ and 21″ x 2.15″ and are currently available at dealers nationwide.
Watch for additional “flare series” wheel designs along with the introduction of two-piece rotors. Weld is also adding 17″ x 6.25″ wheels and the “reintroduction” of the 18″ x 4″ to accommodate the larger tire sizes that Harley-Davidson is now offering with their new models.

MY STOLEN BIKE AT THE ‘LOVE RIDE” ON 11/13/05– PLEASE READ MY TRUE STORY– Hello, my name is Jim McClain and I would like to tell you about my custom motorcycle that was stolen at the LOVE RIDE on 11 / 13 / 05. This would be the second year my wife and I attended this event.
My wife Stacy and I were on our 2001 custom built bike by THUNDER EAGLE in Corona, Ca. and our friends Shawn & Tammy were on their new factory bike. We arrived at the event at about 11:30 AM and we were directed into a grass area just right of the entrance of the Castaic Park. I parked our bike and locked it with a wheel lock that bolts to the rear brake rotor. We then went into the event for a couple hours and when we came out to leave at 2:45 PM our beautiful bike was gone.. I cannot express to you the utter disbelief and gut-wrenching sorrow we felt!
I immediately ran about 40 feet to where a police officer was standing directing traffic the whole time and told him of my bike being stolen. He called two officers by radio who were only 40 yards or so away from us and they immediately came to my location. They exited the cruiser and walked with me to where my bike was last seen(where I parked it on the grass ). The officers proceeded to make a report when all of a sudden my friend Shawn yelled out, “JIM, THERE GOES YOUR BIKE!!!!” The thief was riding right past us on the main street just off the grass parking area about 60 yards.
I asked the officers to radio the patrol car at the intersection we could see that the thief was heading towards. They said, ” We are.”
To my complete shock the group of bikes stopped at the intersection for about 30 seconds or so then proceeded to pull away. This intersection was in our sight and there were two police cruisers and at least two officers standing within 10 feet from my stolen bike at this point. I turned to the two officers standing next to me with a bewildered look on my face and asked them why didn’t they stop the guy. They glared at me with a blank look on their faces and one of them said, “We are trying.”
I said to them, “Lets get in your car and chase them down. We can catch him! He’s right there!!”
They said, “No, just wait here.”
I stood there with my heart in my throat as my wife was crying and we watched our dream bike disappear from our line of sight. I instantly thought of the next two intersections that they would incounter, with police officers at each of these points. I thought for sure they would stop this guy at one of these points. We would get our bike back and this punk would go to jail. Four or five minutes go by with no info and the officers telling us nothing. At this point, we realize this guy could be getting on the freeway by now and our chances of getting our dream bike back is dramatically slipping away. After a few more minutes I started asking the officers questions:
Why didn’t you stop the first intersection for less than a minute or two and we could have caught them?
Officer Diaz said, ” We tried but there was radio static.”
(I could have ran up the that first intersection in less than 30 seconds!)
Why didn’t they stop the next two intersections with officers already positioned there?
Officer SOOHOO said. “We are trying.”
(We could have caught up to the guy at the second intersection if we just got in the police car and tried!)
I can’t understand the incompetence and lack of aggressiveness shown by officer DIAZ & SOOHOO from parks services bureau CASTAIC STATION, as well as the overwhelming amount of Police and Highway Patrol officers that were there could not stop the guy right in front of them.
I still can’t believe our dream bike is gone and the worst part is we didn’t have insurance coverage. Our previous insurance company (PACIFIC SPECIALTY INS.) cancelled us because the bike was custom built and I wasn’t able to find a new company to insure the bike yet. My wife and I work hard, we don’t make a lot of money, we have four children and it is a tragedy for us to lose our bike. I just wanted to share this with you with the hope that you could do something to prevent this from happening to someone else.
THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS LETTER,
–JIM & STACY McCLAIN

PAUL COX EXPANDS EXPERTISE AND HITS THE ROAD–Paul Cox of Indian Larry Legacy Does More than Leather, he builds Fabulous Custom Bikes from Scratch.
Paul Cox of Indian Larry Legacy has earned a place in the motorcycle industry as the leading hand tooled leather seat maker. Paul’s custom made, one off seats are legendary and true works of art. What most don’t know is that Paul creates one of a kind, true custom bikes that are also real works of art.
Born in Richmond, VA Paul started building contraptions out of any materials he could find. Anything from soapbox cars; to boats; to robots; to hang gliders; to go-carts Paul did it all; then built his first chopper in 1976. The bike was red, white and blue with a four horse power Briggs and Stratton engine. Since that time, choppers have become an integral part of Paul’s life.
Completing art school in 1989 Paul moved to New York City, where he met Indian Larry. The duo always built from one simple concept_ a motorcycle should look like a machine and functionality always comes first. Wrenching gave Paul a good opportunity to grow as a master leather craftsman also. “The bikes we were building needed more than just a seat out of a catalog” said Cox. “Our bikes were destined to become “characters” the seat being the finishing touch to their personalities” Cox finished. Just as the Blacksmith’s did decades ago, Paul works leather by hand and tools as the master craftsman did in the old west.
Paul and Larry made quite a team, building beautiful bikes that ran like a dream. After the tragic loss of Larry, Paul needed to push forward and keep the shop running and producing one of a kind masterpieces on two wheels. Paul continues to work at the shop he and Indian Larry created in Brooklyn, NY.
“I knew I had to continue the work Larry and I started so long ago. My leather work is still a passion for me and I produce a limited number of seats a year, but the building and fabricating is where Indian Larry Legacy is deeply rooted. Everyone at the shop has clear direction on how to deliver the best product possible” said Cox.
A new product line is available through the shop, including Paul’s patented Rigidaire? seat system for hard tails. Invented by Paul several years ago, this system delivers a ride equal to a bike with full suspension without compromising the stripped down, rigid look. The list of unique, hardcore chopper parts continues to grow regularly through the ongoing efforts of Cox and crew. To see the Rigidaire system, check out www.paulcoxleather.com
In addition to building custom bikes and prototyping new parts, Paul Cox also stays busy on the road attending major rallies and shows nationally. This fall and winter you can find Paul at the Easyriders Centerfold Tour shows across the country. Paul is there to meet and talk to folks about their bikes and dream bikes and also to share some fond memories of Indian Larry. There are so many.
Paul Cox Leather is owned and trademarked by Paul Cox. Indian Larry and Indian Larry Legacy are owned and trademarked by Indian Larry Legacy, Inc.
To learn more about Paul Cox, Indian Larry Legacy, see the upcoming show schedule or to get directions to the shop in Brooklyn, NY visit www.paulcoxleather.com or www.indianlarry.com.

TRAFFIC CONGESTION
The average roadway delay per person in 2001 was 26 hours per year and in 2003 it was 47 hours per year, an increase of 81%. The average commute time one way is 25 minutes. Texas Transportation Institute
JOURNEY TIMES
The average United States driver travels 29 miles per day and is driving a total of 55 minutes per day. (This is an average vehicle speed of 32 mph.) US Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation StatisticsTests comparing car and motorcycle performance on real journeys suggest that traveling by motorcycle can shorten journey times by as much as 33 minutes of every hour for town centre and city travel, and 20 minutes of every hour for travel through a mixture of built-up and non built-up areas. Motorcycle Industry Association (UK)
POTENTIAL AGGREGATE BENEFIT
Motorcycles cover 1-2% of the total distance traveled by road, and cars cover 86%. If 2% of car commuters switched to motorcycles or scooters, the current level of motorcycle utility use would effectively double. Motorcycle Industry Association (UK)
Average 2002 annual household private vehicle expense is $7,371. This is divided into $3,665 for vehicle purchases, $1,235 for gas and oil and $2,471 for insurance and misc. US Department of Labor Statistics, Consumer Expenditure Survey
PARKING SPACES3 – 5 motorcycles fit per automobile parking space. Ride to Work
TOTAL FUEL CONSUMPTION – 2003
Motorcycles 191 million gallons (50.1 avg mpg x 1,800 miles per year per motorcycle)
Passenger Cars 74,590 million gallons (22.3 avg mpg x 13,000 miles per year per car)
Light Truck/SUV 56,302 million gallons (17.7 avg mpg x 13,000 miles per year per Lt Trk / SUV)
US Dept of Transportation, Bureau of Travel Statistics
NORMAL WEEKDAY MOTORCYCLE COMMUTING DAY FUEL USED (estimated)
150,000 commuting motorcycles x 5 mi average commute distance x 2 (both ways) = 1,500,000 motorcycle commuting miles per day. 1,500,000 motorcycle commuting miles @ 50 mpg (avg) = 30,000 gallons per commuting day.100,000,000 commuting passenger cars, light trucks and SUV’s x 6 mi average commute distance x 2 (both ways) = 1,200,000,000 car, light truck and SUV commuting miles per day. 1,200,000,000 car, light truck and SUV commuting miles at 20 mpg (avg) = 60,000,000 gallons per day.
RIDE TO WORK DAY FUEL SAVINGS (estimated)
150,000 motorcycles use 30,000 gallons per normal commuting day x 2 (an estimated 150,000 added motorcycles on Ride to Work Day) = 60,000 gallons used by motorcycles on Ride to Work Day. 60,000 gallons used on Ride to Work Day – 30,000 gallons used by motorcycles on a normal commuting day = 30,000 additional gallons used by motorcycles on Ride to Work Day.
On Ride to Work Day, there are an estimated 150,000 additional Ride to Work Day commuting motorcycles and 150,000 less commuting car, light truck and SUV’s. A 6 mile (avg) commute x 2 (both ways) x 150,000 commuting car, light truck and SUV’s = 1,800,000 car, light truck and SUV miles. 1,800,000 car, light truck and SUV miles / 20 mpg (avg) = 90,000 gallons. 90,000 less car, truck and SUV gallons – 30,000 more gallons used on Ride to Work Day = 60,000 less gallons of fuel used on Ride to Work Day. If every work day were Ride to Work Day, 60,000 gallons saved x 250 work days = 15,000,000 less gallons used per year.
Be Safe, –Joe Tatro rider@berkshireriders.com –from Rogue TOP TEN THINGS ONLY WOMEN UNDERSTAND– AND, the Number One thing only women understand: WORLD MOTORCYCLES DEMAND TO EXCEED 41 MILLION UNITS IN 2009–CLEVELAND, OH — (MARKET WIRE) — 11/15/2005 — Worldwide demand for motorcycles is forecast to advance 4.9 percent annually through 2009 to 41.6 million units, valued at almost $40 billion. Demand for all categories of motorcycles is expected to remain healthy, despite the slowdown in growth in key markets such as China, which is rapidly transitioning away from motorcycles and toward cars for its transportation needs. Increased growth in all categories will also be seen in developed markets, where rising fuel prices and (in some markets) continued restrictions on car use are stoking interest in the exceptional fuel economy and cost effectiveness of motorcycles. While the market for large and expensive high displacement motorcycles will also remain strong (at least through 2009), concerns regarding demand have emerged due to the aging of the customer base, especially in the United States and Western Europe. These and other trends are presented in “World Motorcycles,” a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industrial market research firm. In essence, there are two separate motorcycle markets. One is centered in the industrialized Triad (i.e., the US, Japan and Western Europe), where motorcycles are seen as pleasure vehicles by consumers who already have one or more automobiles. The other, much larger market in unit terms is found in the emerging economies of Asia, where motorcycles are seen as primary family and work vehicles. These vehicles are cheaper, smaller and less powerful than Triad motorcycles. Unlike the light vehicle industry, which has consolidated down to a handful of key global players, numerous motorcycle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) exist, especially in Asia, which represents the heart of global light motorcycle demand. However, competitive intensity is increasing, evidenced by the ongoing price wars in China, Vietnam and other Southeast Asian markets. Furthermore, restrictions on motorcycle use in large metropolitan areas of China and some other Asian countries will likely cause a shift in demand away from urban areas to more rural markets. While Asia is dominant in terms of unit volume, most key players derive far higher revenues per unit from sales in developed markets such as North America. The clear profitability implications of this difference reveal why so many manufacturers compete so hard to sell machines in North America.— –from Rogue ART FROM THE BIKERNET CULTURAL CENTER–Photograpic scenes from Biktoberfest ’05, by Whiplash, Biker Photog. Hey,
It’s another wild weekend here at the Wilmington Bikernet Headquarters. Last weekend, during Love Ride parties I was dismayed to find that Wilmington, California was named after Wilmington, Delaware. No offence to the east coast unit, but what kind of bullshit is that? Banning named the town after the town he grew up in. He needed a creative writing course. I say we change it to Smugglers’ Cove.
Thought I would kick back this weekend, but the entire industry is merging on Las Vegas for the Big Twin Dealer show and Bradley’s World Championship. I’m flying out for a day. Let’s hit the news. I’ve got to pack, plan out the women I want to see and the Vegas night life. Business can wait:
TP’s Pro Vent (circle R) Rocker Boxes–Bethel, CT -TP Engineering is proud to introduce their new patented Pro Vent (circle R) Rocker Boxes. These are the very same rocker boxes found on every new Big Dog Motorcycle and used by top custom bike builders worldwide like Paul Yaffe, Russell Mitchell, Dave Perewitz, Donnie Smith, Jerry Covington, Coast to Coast Choppers and many others.
CNC-Machined from 6061 billet aluminum, TP’s two-piece rocker box is innovative in design and function. Tom Pirone, President and “Head Design Engineer” for all of TP’s products stated, “Functionally, we’ve reengineered the way oil separates from the air and air flows out from the engine. The end result: easier air movement separates the air from the oil more efficiently and nearly eliminates oil carryover into the air filter.” Basically, TP’s patented design eliminates oil carry-over and features an exclusive breathing system for a quieter, better performing engine.
“These rocker boxes also have a sleek appearance and will compliment any top end. They look incredible, but perform even better”, concluded Duke Wainright, Vice President of TP Engineering. TP’s Pro Vent Rocker Box stanchions are machined integrally into the rocker box for added strength, and not as a separate piece. Additional benefits include: The two-piece wedge design allows far easier access to internal parts for service and maintenance. Extra wall thickness reduces noise and adds stability, reliability.
All TP Pro Vent Rocker Boxes are chromed to a show quality mirror finish and are available on all TP Pro-Series? engines (114″, 121″ and 124″) and are also sold separately. Pro-Vent rocker boxes will fit Evolution?, Big Twin?, Sportster?, and Twin Cam engines. Each kit includes rocker shafts and all necessary hardware for easy installation.

STURGIS HOME FOR SALE-BEFORE IT HITS THE MARKET–Just thought you might know someone who would be interested in this:We are selling our wee house. It is a little over 700 square feet, two bedroom, one bath, large garage (20×30 I think). $65,000.00. It is on Park Avenue and 9th, one block north of Lazelle, two blocks west of the J&P Cycles building, in walking distance to Main Street and vendor locations west of Junction.
It isn’t fancy and wouldn’t appeal to any of your friends, however it would be perfect for an industry person who brings people to the rally and needs accommodation for them, as well a storage.
It’s been a good space. The yard is particularly pretty and a nice private space to relax during the summer months. Loads of trees and, if I might brag, a lovely garden. House/garage was painted two years ago. Roof is new, hardwood floors in the two bedrooms, laundry room, washer and dryer will stay, as will the stove and window air conditioner unit that is more than adequate for the small space. If they utilized the living room area, the space would easily sleep six people. The garage is insulated. We have Jon’s truck, the Honda Accord and three bikes in it every day plus Jon’s work space.
Six mature oaks, one mature elm, several lilacs, a 20 foot cottenless cottonwood, a young maple, a fast growing Box Elder tree and a 10 foot ornamental crab apple. The portion of the yard that is right off the alley (between Lazelle and Park) has a six foot privacy fence. Property is 100 feet long by 50 feet across, long and narrow. Built the rock path myself!
If you know of anyone who might be interested have them give me a ring 605.490.3033

INMATES BUILDING TRUE “OUTLAW” CHOPPERS– Billings Gazette, USA – CARSON CITY, Nev. – If you’re looking for an “outlaw” motorcycle, Nevada prison officials have a deal for you – a custom, high-powered chopper that costs $40,000 or more and is built by real outlaws.
The prison system’s “Big House Choppers” venture is expanding from a small wooden shed involving a few motorcycle-savvy convicts to a larger prison shop in southern Nevada that will employ as many as 30 inmates.”We are producing the only true outlaw motorcycles being produced by outlaws in the United States,” Howard Skolnik, head of the state’s prison industries program, said Monday.Skolnik boasts that buyers also will receive a certificate that confirms pieces of scrapped prison cell bars went into their bikes – in the form of 5-inch-long fender supports.
“Little things like that make these bikes look desirable,” he said.Skolnik told a legislative oversight panel that payment of a $15,000 licensing fee to the state Department of Motor Vehicles will clear the way for sale of the custom choppers.”You know, there’s no accounting for bad taste, senator,” Skolnik said to state Sen. Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, who asked for details on the program and its market appeal. “People want these bikes. They really do.”
The venture, with the motto “Built with Conviction,” started at the Southern Desert Correctional Center, but may soon move into a 10,000-square-foot area within a large industrial building at the High Desert State Prison. Both prisons are in southern Nevada.
Two convicts are now building the choppers and already have produced their first, a cherry-colored motorcycle with a big, 110-cubic-inch engine and a prison guard tower painted on it.
Skolnik said a young inmate who worked on the first motorcycle recently was released and, because of the skills he learned in the prison industries program, quickly got a job paying nearly $20 an hour.
Nevada’s prison industries programs go well beyond making license plates and include old car restoration, making draperies, embroidery work and concrete casting. The programs are designed to be self-supporting, so they don’t rely on taxpayer money. Inmates can earn $5.15 an hour for their work, and learn a trade that will help them once they’re released.

OWNERS RIGHT TO REPAIR ACT– Congressional Hearing on the Motor Vehicle Owners Right to Repair Act (HR2048)The Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection met on November 10th to question the motor vehicle manufacturers and aftermarket part industries on the “Right to Repair” bill. Under current law, motor vehicle and motorcycle manufacturers must make available publicly, only information pertaining to the emissions on board diagnostic systems under an Environmental Protection Agency mandate. This results, in some cases forced owners to return to the dealership for other repairs that might have been less expensive and more convenient to fix at a local mechanic or even by getting their own hands dirty.
The rapid advancement in braking, ignition, security and safety technology has resulted in more sophisticated diagnostic tools and equipment that manufactures are reluctant to make available to the shade tree mechanic or vehicle owner. Without access to the same training and tools made readily available to those within the dealership network, many small shops are being forced to turn away work. In fact in a survey of aftermarket automotive technicians, over fifty percent of them have turned away one to six jobs a month.
Consumer safety is also compromised when local repair shops of choice aren’t provided information to conduct certain repairs causing drivers and riders to avoid some needed repairs due to costly dealership service prices. This legislation is nothing new, the coalition of groups that supports the legislation has been attempting to right this wrong for almost six years. So, why is it taking so long? During a hearing on this measure in the 107th Congress it was decided that the disputing parties would attempt to resolve the issue with a non-legislative answer. Their answer was to set up an independent council comprised of aftermarket and motor vehicle manufacturers and agree on the way to share the information in question voluntarily. However an agreement was never reached because of a lone holdout in the manufacturers’ camp, an expensive and top of the line European manufacturer.
Back to the hearing, Chairman Sterns (R-FL) the subcommittee chair set the tone for the hearing in his opening statement when he said “All parties agree that access to repair and service information is a consumer right”.
Other members at the hearing echoed the Chairman’s sentiments. Even the full Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Joe Barton (R-TX) was in attendance. His strong statement of support of the bill was almost the nail in the coffin for the motor vehicle manufactures. Barton went on saying, “Federal legislation is not the answer to everything but in this case, after four years of discussion with no results, it’s the only answer”. Barton also happens to be the original sponsor of HR 2048, and is the one man who can see this legislation to the House floor for a vote and has vowed to do so. A full Energy and Commerce committee mark up is tentatively scheduled for sometime the first two weeks of December.
Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation said, “This issue is about access and information but ultimately about consumer choice. Purchasing a motorcycle from your favorite manufacturer shouldn’t tie you to them as long as you own the motorcycle. We as the owners should be able to make the decision who performs maintenance or upgrades our motorcycles.”We have the right to remain silent, the right to an attorney and now the US House of Representatives wants you to have the right to repair your motorcycle. Call your Member of Congress at 202 224 3121 and ask them to please support HR 2048, the Motor Vehicle Owner Right to Repair act of 2005. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation will continue to provide updates on this important legislation.

BIKERNET RELATIONSHIP ADVICE–The wife comes home early &finds her husband in their master bedroom making love to a beautiful, sexy young lady!
“You unfaithful, disrespectful pig! What are you doing? How dare you do this to me the faithful wife, the mother of your children! I’m leaving this house, I want a divorce!”
The husband, replies “Wait, wait a minute! Before you leave, at least listen to what happened.”
“Hummmmm, I don’t know, well it’ll be the last thing I will hear from you. But make it fast, you unfaithful pig you”
The husband begins to tell his story . . . “While driving home this young lady asks for a ride. I saw her so defenseless that went ahead and allowed her in my car. I noticed that she was very thin, not well dressed and very dirty. She mentioned that she had not eaten for 3 days. With great compassion and hurt, I brought her home and warmed up the enchiladas that I made for you last night that you wouldn’t eat because you’re afraid you’ll gain weight; the poor thing, practically devoured them. Since she was very dirty I asked her to take a shower.
While she was showering, I noticed her clothes were dirty and full of holes so I threw her clothes away. Since she needed clothes, I gave her the pair of jeans that you have had for a few years, that you can no longer wear because they are too tight on you.
I also gave her the blouse that I gave you on our anniversary and you don’t wear because I don’t have good taste. I gave her the pullover that my sister gave you for Christmas that you will not wear just to bother my sister and I also gave her the boots that you bought at the expensive boutique that you never wore again after you saw your co-worker wearing the same pair.”
The husband continues his story . . . .
“The young woman was very grateful to me and I walked her to the door.
When we got to the door she turned around and with tears coming out of her eyes, she asked me: “Sir, do you have anything else that your wife does not use”

EDITORIAL AGAINST MAY OF MYRTLE BEACH–He Says He has the right to nudge you with his car if you’re wearing an obscene t-shirt!
Man, I hate to say this, but it seems the Mayor of Myrtle Beach South Carolina is as dumb as a box of rocks, and I feel sorry for him. I feel sorry for him because he recently stuck his foot in his mouth and obviously isn’t smart enough to publicly extricate his shoe. Instead he blames the local newspaper for misquoting him. What, you may ask, did The “Honorable” Mayor McBride say?
McBride told other council members during an October meeting that he was driving with one of his children in the vehicle during the fall Myrtle Beach rally and his child saw a biker wearing an offensive shirt. He was quoted in the Sun News Times as saying “It was very tempting to kind of nudge the guy on the bike [with my car].”McBride claims he never meant he would nudge the guy with his car, just that he was tempted to “nudge the guy on the bike.” However in a follow-up story in the Sun News, McBride was quoted as saying, “”I thought about bumping the guy, I admit, the thought ran through my mind.”
I guess he meant he thought about bumping him with his over inflated ego?
Maybe that’s what the driver who ran into the rear of Scott Allen Hice’s 1972 Harley-Davidson four days earlier while he was stopped at a stop sign on Hwy 17 By-pass was thinking. Maybe that was just a “nudge.” I dunno Mr. Mayor, maybe you should ask Hice’s family if it’s OK to “nudge” a motorcyclist when you don’t like what his T-shirt says. The worse part is when the proverbial stinky hit the fan, the Mayor didn’t apologize, No….this political brain trust had the audacity to defend his statement in a ABATE candidate forum a couple of days later. He even said he has “the right” to bump someone on a bike if that person wears an obscene t-shirt!

Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off– On Saturday, 17 December 2005, Pacific Rim Cycle, and The Pasha Group will be host to the 50th State’s largest motorcycle rally to be held at Kapiolani Community College in the heart of Honolulu.
In association with KPOI (“The Big Kahuna”) radio, Hawaii’s premier motorcycle publication (Hawaiian Chopper) will put on “The Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off”.
Designed as a series of motorcycle related events, which will include a magazine model search, custom motorcycle contest, tattoo contest, biker build-off, and rock concert (act to be named), the event is sure to excite both bikers and the general public alike.
Beginning with a VIP party December 16th (time/place TBD) motorcycle enthusiasts will view the screening of the “Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off”. This will be the first viewing of the custom bike build-off between local master builder Roger Kuwahara of Kustom Fab, and Shannon Aikau, the chief builder from Counts Kustoms of Las Vegas. We have begun filming the building process of both motorcycle builders, and this event will be the only opportunity for spectators to see the action leading up to the fan judging of the bikes the following day.
On Saturday, 17 December at 10:00am, the gates will open for the “Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off” Rally. Participants will find plenty of parking at the venue, and will be charged a $20.00 entry fee ($15.00 pre-sale) into the festivities.
A Magazine Model Search will be held featuring some of Hawaii’s most beautiful women, all vying for a chance to become one of Hawaiian Chopper’s cover girls.
A custom bike contest and tattoo contest will be organized allowing riders and custom builders to show their prized two-wheeled rides, and their hot tattoo artwork, all in search of a cool trophy.
A concert featuring one of Hawaii’s top new rock & roll acts. The group Analog will play their hard driving style of rock and will be a great way to cap off the day’s activities.
Oh, and of course, the “Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off” will give spectators the opportunity to select the winner of the Hawaii’s first Biker Build-Off by casting their vote for their favorite chopper.
In addition to all the festivities planned for the December event, joining us will be celebrated motorcycle builders, Danny “The Count” Koker of Counts Kustoms and Jose De Miguel of Caribbean Custom Cycles. These custom builders received international notoriety on Discovery Channel’s “Great Biker Build-Off”, the Speed Channel, and magazines such as, Barnett’s Motorcycle Showcase, The Horse, Street Chopper, Hawaiian Chopper and others. Both of these men are wildly popular characters of the motorcycle genre.
Along with some of the World’s top celebrity builders, visitors to this year’s event will be actively engaged in the festivities, making this the biker event of the year.
Finally, I am also proud to announce the display appearance of heavy metal rock group Motley Crue’s specially built choppers. These are the actual bikes that Motley Crue takes on tour with them. When the band appears onstage at the Blaisdell Arena December 14th, these bikes will not be part of the show, in fact, to see these bikes, you will have to attend “The Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off”!
If that isn’t enough, Counts Kustoms will be displaying the “Ozzy” bike built for Rocker Ozzy Osbourn, and their radical custom choppers.
Of course, no event would be complete without great food, drinks, and giveaways, so we will feature the cooking some of Hawaii’s best restaurants. Add to that drink specials courtesy of Rosa’s Ice Tee, and numerous prizes to be given away randomly, and we have a world-class motorcycle rally.
It is my pleasure to invite you to sponsor this marquee motorcycle event along with such companies as Pacific Rim Cycle, Pasha Shipping, South Seas Harley-Davidson, Rosa’s Ice-Tee, Island Tattoo, Carr’s Insurance, Avon Tires, and a host of others great sponsors to be identified later.
On behalf of Ten Toes Enterprises and Hawaiian Chopper magazine, allow me to thank you for your consideration regarding the “Great Hawaiian Biker Build-Off”.
Please join me in this year’s premier motorcycle event. It is sure to be the highlight of 2005!

Manufactured to both Kendall and Kustomwerks “exacting quality standards, these fenders will be produced from heavy gauge steel with seams”, Don Hannon, the president of Kustomwerks told AMD. “By using one-piece construction, the new signature series fenders will not split or crack. Each KJC signature series fender will also include a phosphate etching to reduce rusting and prep time for the builder.” The program will include front fenders for 19in and 21in narrow glide wheels in 4.25in, 4.75in and 5.50in widths. Each fender will come undrilled to fit a variety of custom applications. “Kendall is one of the top builders in the industry, and we have worked closely with him and his team to ensure that the new fender line upholds standards”, Hannon added.

The line will be distributed exclusively by Kustomwerks and Kendall Johnson Customs, and will be seen for the first time at the Big Twin West Dealer Show in Las Vegas in November.
“We are really excited to have a product out on the market that exceeds anything else out there. THE LOVE IS HERE–It’s that time of the year for the largest charity fund raising event of the year at Glendale H-D and Lake Castaic. It’s the only Los Angeles based event aside from the LA Calendar event in the summer.
It’s our opportunity to hang out with pals from all over the country. May everyone stay safe, out of traffic and keep your bikes locked up tight.
It’s odd, but this is the beginning of the rainy season for this region. Keep in mind that LA is actually a desert. Most years we receive less than 10 inches of rain. No matter what’s happening it always clears up for the Love Ride.
I’ll try like hell to get caught up next week.
Have a helluva weekend,
Ride Forever,

ANDREW HINES CLINCHES SECOND CONSECUTIVE NHRA POWERADE PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR SCREAMIN’ EAGLE–Teammate GT Tonglet Takes Second Place in Final Standings POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 6, 2005) – Andrew Hines clinched his second consecutive NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle championship Sunday at the 41st annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway.
He nearly made it a perfect evening too, as he rode the Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson into the final round for the fifth time this season.
What’s more, teammate GT Tonglet earned second place in the final standings – his career-best finish.
“This is an amazing finish because not only did we win back-to-back championships but we also took second place for a strong 1-2 punch,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “It’s especially incredible considering all the competition this season. It was tough to win rounds and races all year, so for us to finish in first and second place shows how truly dynamic this Vance & Hines team is.”
It is the fifth NHRA championship for tuner and team owner Byron Hines. The veteran crew chief also tuned his oldest son and current team tuner, Matt Hines, to three championships between 1997-99.
“This is a great day for both Harley-Davidson and the Vance & Hines family,” Hines said. “We never start the season looking to win championships. We start the season looking to set records and win races. If you can do that, the championships will follow and it has the last two seasons.
“We had the bike to beat at Pomona, but it didn’t go our way this year. That has always been one of the toughest tracks for us for some reason. We may have won the title, but that just gives us more motivation to get back to the shop and prepare for next season.”
Hines wrapped up the title as soon as Tonglet lost in the first round. Tonglet, just 47 points behind Hines in the standings going into the final race of the year, lost to Kawasaki rider Mike Berry. Tonglet turned in a 7.254-second pass at 182.55 mph in a losing effort against Berry’s 7.160 at 186.98.
Hines watched the run and knew he had clinched the title.
“I was really nervous before GT ran,” Hines said. “I wanted a repeat title so badly that I was just sick to my stomach before the first round. Then GT lost and I just put my head down and raced.”
Hines went on to win his first and second round matches at the starting line due to red-light fouls by his opponents. Hines went 7.100 at 187.89 to Buell rider Chris Rivas’ foul before turning in a 7.171 at 185.72 against Berry’s foul in the second round.
Hines posted a win in the semifinal race against Buell rider Chip Ellis, going 7.119 at 187.89 against Ellis’ 7.174 at 183.02.
In the final round, Hines saw red and so did his opponent, Buell rider Ryan Schnitz. Hines fouled at the starting line with a reaction time of -0.011 before going 7.107 at 188.70, giving the victory to Schnitz, whose -0.010 reaction time was followed by a run of 8.126 at 121.69. It was the second time the two riders have faced off in the final round and the second time Hines handed Schnitz the win at the starting line.
“It was a bittersweet ending to a great season,” Hines said. “This year’s championship was definitely much better than last year because I think we had to work a lot harder to make it happen. The red light in the final is disappointing but at least we were in the final this year, and I’ve been around long enough to know that it happens. I think it’s going to be a great offseason with two championships under my belt.”
Hines earned two wins in five final rounds this season along with 10 top qualifying awards. He also set the national record twice, earning an extra 20 bonus points for each record.
“Going 6.96 seconds in Sonoma (Calif.), earning the 20 bonus points, being the top qualifier and winning the race there made it the best event of the season,” Hines said. “We earned the maximum amount of points for one event and that was just awesome.
“If we had not set both of those records, I would have come into Pomona just seven points ahead of GT instead of 47, and who knows how that could have changed the event. It certainly would have made it a lot tougher. GT was a great competitor this year and I’m glad the team finished first and second in points. We’ve all accomplished so much.”
As if the championship and second place weren’t enough, the crew took home top honors as well. The team earned the first Full Throttle Award, given to the team with the most consistent qualifying performance over the course of the entire season.
Tonglet finished in sixth place last season. This year, he not only posted two wins in three final rounds, but he was also the points leader for the first time in his career. He held the top spot in the standings following seven races this season.
“I’m happy I stayed in second place because that’s a first for me and it shows how well we competed all season long,” Tonglet said. “At the beginning of the season I wanted to do better than last year and my goal was a top five finish. We did that. The V-Rod ran better this season, I rode better and it showed in our results. The work paid off and it was a lot of fun all year long.”

OHIO HELMET BILL INTRODUCED–Better spread the word on this one.Wake up, OHIO Bikers, the safety nazis are back and this time they’re beating at OUR door. Introduced this week, HB 406 proposed that a fulltime helmet law be put in place for ANY operator and passenger under the age of 25! It further proposes that if anyone is charged under this statute, if enacted, a mandatory fine of 500.00 SHALL be imposed (good-bye judicial discretion) which will go to fund a Traumatic Brain Injury fund, some of which will be used to fund a study of traumatic brain injuries (you know where that one is heading, don’t ya brothers and sisters? Can you say MANDATORY, FULL TIME HELMET LAW?)
Anyway, here’s the short description of the bill’s intended purpose and a link to the full text of the bill.
As Introduced126th General Assembly Regular Session 2005-2006H. B. No. 406requires persons who are under 25 years of age to wear a helmet while riding on a motorcycle either as the operator or as a passenger, to require persons convicted of failing to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle, driving under license suspension, driving without a valid driver’s license, driving under OVI suspension, driving under financial responsibility suspension, and failing to produce proof of financial responsibility in certain circumstances to pay a mandatory $500 fine, to permit those persons in certain circumstances to choose between a jail term of two consecutive weekend days or attendance at a safe and responsible driving instructional class, to create the Traumatic Brain Injury Fund and the Safe and Responsible Driving Instructional Fund, and to require some of the fines paid by such persons to be deposited into these new funds.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON 2006 XL SPORTSTER 1200L BRINGS IT ALL_New Model Combines Low Seat Height and Refined Ergonomics with Sportster Style–MILWAUKEE (November 3, 2005) – Harley-Davidson brings the best of its long heritage of street motorcycle design to the new 2006 XL Sportster 1200L model. Blending a low seat height and mid-mount controls with the powerful torque of the rubber-mounted Evolution V-Twin engine, the XL Sportster 1200L adds another exciting option to the Sportster family.
“The XL Sportster 1200L combines specific features and value that our customers requested,” said Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson Director of Motorcycle Product Development. “This motorcycle is powered by a smooth-riding 1200cc black and chrome treated engine with a lower profile design that stays true to the Sportster heritage of narrow, agile styling.”The XL Sportster 1200L has a seat height of 26.25 inches, which is 1.8 inches lower than the XL Sportster 1200R Roadster. In addition, the handlebar grips are moved back an inch further than any other Sportster model and a new two-up Badlander style seat provides a comfortable ride. That lower profile seat height, merged with the ergonomics of the new pullback handlebar and mid-mount controls, is sure to accommodate a broad range of riders.
Featuring a black powder-coated 1200cc XL Evolution engine with chrome treatment, the XL Sportster 1200L performs with 79 ft. lbs. of torque. All 2006 XL Sportster models feature a new transmission and all 1200cc models feature a clutch that reduces lever effort by 12 percent. Overall shift effort is significantly reduced due to thin steel “dog rings” that slide to cause gear changes. The new transmission is integrated with the XL Evolution powertrain and shares a die-cast case with the engine. New helical-cut gears mesh more quietly than the straight-cut gears used in the previous transmission.
The 4.5 gallon fuel tank allows the XL Sportster 1200L an extended driving range of more than 200 miles per tank. Standard black 13-spoke cast aluminum wheels with machined silver highlights put a racing spin on Sportster style and steel laced wheels are optional. The XL Sportster is the original Harley-Davidson hot rod motorcycle, with a design refined from the racetrack to the street, offering premier performance and classic style.
The XL Sportster 1200L is offered in eight color options, including three unique two-tone paint schemes, all with a new 3-D fuel tank graphic.
The XL Sportster 1200L features:
Rubber-mounted 1200cc XL Evolution engine
Black powder-coated engine with chrome treatment
High-compression, high-flow cylinder heads
High-performance cams
Smoother, quieter transmission
Reduced clutch lever effort
26.25-inch, two-up seat
Low front and rear suspension
Pulled back polished handlebar
Mid-mount foot controls
4.5 gallon fuel tank
Black 13-spoke cast aluminum wheels
MERLIN ENGINEERING GEROTOR ‘MAGNA PUMP’–Gives you Better thanTwin Cam(TM) oiling on your Evolution(R)The Merlin? Gerotor Oil Pump as capable of supplying nearly 10 times theoil volume of the stock oil pump, and more than 4 times the volume of thereturn. This is not the real advantage of the Merlin Oil Pump however. Wherethe Merlin Oil Pump really shines is when the oil temperature gets high andthe oil has thinned out. The Merlin gerotor oil pump will continue tomaintain excellent oil pressure under the most severe conditions.
When you are idling in traffic on hot days, the oil pressure can reachdangerously low levels. The Merlin Oil Pump will not let that happen. Whenthe motor RPM gets close to the redline, conventional pumps cavitate andloose pressure when you need it the most. These pumps will not cavitateuntil the motor reaches over 14,000 RPM. That RPM is more than twice as highas most motors can ever reach. This is the reason that nearly every racingmotor on the planet uses gerotor type oil pumps.
And to top it off, the Merlin Oil Pump is also beautiful.
Comes complete with new drive gears, gaskets, hardware and installationinstructions.

V-TWIN COMMITTEE REPORTS EPA NEGOTIATION PROGRESSIVE— THE FIFTH meeting of the MIC American V-Twin Committee at the end of August this year resulted in progress on the issues of EPA engine certification and sound test procedures.
Following earlier contacts, the EPA asked the MIC to draft provisions for an on-highway motorcycle engine certification program to allow small volume motorcycle manufacturers and builders to purchase EPA certified engines, and install them without having to recertify the motorcycle. Currently, custom builders and small volume manufacturers must certify the complete motorcycle even if they install an engine that is used in another motorcycle, and that has already been EPA certified.
The MIC draft engine certification program was presented to the EPA in July, which is now considering the proposal. The American V-Twin Committee also discussed recent progress with its OE Technical Committee on the feasibility of developing an appropriate in-use, on-highway motorcycle sound test procedure.
Motorcycle noise is a major concern and many states and municipalities are considering the adoption of varying standards and tests that could be detrimental to the industry. The Committee’s objective in creating this test is to provide states and municipalities with an easy, economical, reliable and uniform means of controlling excessive motorcycle noise.
Support for developing an in-use, on-highway test procedure has also been expressed by the Motorcycle Sound Working Group and some members of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Motorcycle Committee.
The MIC was planning to discuss this issue with the SAE at their next meeting. The MIC would likely be the key source of funding for a program to devise a new SAE sound test procedure that is simpler to use than the current one

I don’t know a damn thing and I have nothing to say. I’m not even sure I’m innocent. Since the Mexico blast I’ve been in a daze. Then it was a mad dash to the Texas National Bike Show, at the Lone Star Rally in Galveston and back for Love Ride Weekend. I’m still spinning and trying desperately to catch up on e-mails.
I apologize If I haven’t run across your e-mail in my harried attempt to catch up. It’s all exciting, but out of hand. This weekend is packed with TV show meetings, No Love Parties, Antique bike auctions and Hamster get-togethers. I will try to launch Johnny White’s report on the Texas National Bike show tomorrow. I have some more book reviews from Jaq in Australia and two bike features to launch next week, including a Steeds and one from the guys in Hawaii. You’ll dig it, so hang on. Let’s hit the news:

VTRACEGIRL BIKERNET.COM UPDATE–November 7, 2005, Just got back from the SEMA show (Specialty Equipment Market Association), Las Vegas Convention Center, November 1-4, 2005.
Great vendors, booth presentation. This show is almost impossible to go thru the entire event. Two million sq ft’ inside, and two million sq ft’ outside of vendors. VT was signing autograph posters in the Sport Chassis – Legend Air Ride Suspension booth. This was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I had a chance to see the most expensive set of custom three-piece forged wheels to ever be created: 12,000 diamonds and 800 sapphires totaling 1,100 carats for ONE MILLION dollars in the Asanti booth. Also, visited the Cooper tires booth maybe next year I will have my race bike in their booth. As well as Garrett’s booth Garrett Turbo is the turbo I run in my bike.
Saturday Practice day at Speedworld Raceway. Took my Custom Performance Turbo V-Rod and Fatboy to the track. Cut great lights and had very consistent times on both bikes. I worked on my RT and first 60ft’. On the turbo bike my best ET was 10.32 @ 133.79 mph and RT .063. Best time on my fatboy was 12.15 seconds @ 113.83 mph. I cut a .001 light on the fatboy. Getting the fatboy dialed in for the shoot out in Vegas.
Next event is back to Vegas for the biggest of them all AHDRA Grand Finals coming up at the Jim’s Las Vegas Nationals presented by Barnett Clutches November 12-13. I will be racing my Custom Performance Turbo V-Rod in the Super Sport (SS #261) as well as my 2000 custom fatboy in the 4th Annual Las Vegas High-Stakes Shootout with a $15,000 purse. Last race of the AHDRA season and hope to go out with a WIN.
Monday, November 14th is the AHDRA Championship Awards Banquet. VT has a chance of winning Rookie of the year or Lady of the year for the 2005. Cross your fingers! Please visit my website at www.vtracegirl.com. Till then, see you next week on bikernet.com — VTRaceGirl update!

SPORTSTER DEAL OF THE WEEK–Shown in the pictures is a 81 H-D iron head sportster. This bike is on consignment, for sale. It is a 1100 Sportster, would make a great project bike. Needs some TLC, but it runs. Asking 2000.00

HURRICANE HIT SHOP REPORT–Hope this email finds everyone okay- we just got power back and we had no damage up until Tuesday- The landlord immediately had a new roof installed this past Thurs- Monday- the roofer told us it was finished, so we unwrapped all the stuff and put the shop back together. We came in Tuesday with a generator to get back to work and it was raining-well the roofer forgot to install the roof on our side of the building. We walked into a mess. The water was literally running down every wall in the shop- and the power had come on so the electric boxes were sizzling as the water ran through them. We lost every piece of equipment and hardware and tools- toolboxes were filled with water. The lathe- welder- all of it- after the shock. I called the lawyer- he will do whatever he does and I am out every day looking for a new location and some used equipment.
We will not be taken out by some dumb ass who was an incompetent contractor- especially after all we have been through to make it (Vagabond Chopper Co.) what it is-so other than that bullshit the house & kids are healthy, so is dad and his place. I am grateful for that and my friends and their families are safe and well too- anything else can be fixed-What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger- right? Improvise, adapt, overcome…
Everything is still going as planned we will be in a new location by the first of the month. I will be in Las Vegas for the Big Twin West Dealer Show to help kick off the 1-in-8 series, and I will be unveiling my new chopper at the Seminole hard rock- Roadhouse Finals.

THREE BIKERNET VIRGINS– A mother had 3 virgin daughters. They were all getting married within a short time period.
Because Mom was a bit worried about how their sex life would get started, she made them all promise to send a postcard from the honeymoon with a fewwords on how marital sex felt.
The first girl sent a card from Hawaii two days after the wedding. The card said nothing but “Nescafe”.
Mom was puzzled at first, but then went to the kitchen and got out theNescafe jar. It said: “Good ’til the last drop”. Mom blushed, but waspleased for her daughter.
The second girl sent the card from Vermont a week after the wedding, andthe card read “Benson & Hedges”.
Mom now knew to go straight to her husband’s cigarettes, and she readfrom the Benson & Hedges pack: “Extra Long. King Size”. She was againslightly embarrassed but still happy for her daughter.
The third girl left for her honeymoon in the Caribbean. Momwaited for a week, nothing. Another week went by and still nothing. Then after a whole month, a card finally arrived. Written on it with shaky handwriting were the words” “British Airways”.
Mom took out her latest Harper’s Bazaar magazine, flippedthrough the pages fearing the worst, and finally found the ad for theairline. The ad said: “Three times a day, seven days a week, both ways.”
Mom fainted.

BIKERNET BLONDE AND REDHEAD FILES–Two friends, a blonde and a redhead, are walking down the street andpass a flower shop where the redhead happens to see her boy friendbuying flowers.
She sighs and says, Oh, crap, my boyfriend is buying me flowers again.
The blonde looks quizzically at her and says, “You don’t like gettingflowers?”
The redhead says, “I love getting flowers, but he always hasexpectations after giving me flowers, and I just don’t feel like spendingthe next three days on my back with my legs in the air.”

BIKERNET GAMBLING ADVICE–Two bored casino dealers are waiting at the craps table. A very attractiveblonde woman from Texas arrived and bet $20,000 on a single roll of thedice.
She said, “I hope y’all don’t mind, but I feel much luckier when I’mcompletely nude.”
With that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and yelled,”Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!” As the dice came to a stop shejumped up and down and squealed . . . “YES! YES! I WON, I WON!”
She huggedeach of the dealers and then picked up her winnings and her clothes andquickly departed. The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded.
Finally, one of them asked, “What did she roll?” The other answered, “Idon’t know. I thought you were watching.”
Moral:
Not all Texans are stupid and not all blondes are dumb, but all men aremen.
Conder Report–Well, after 13 years I finally got Halibrand to step up and work with me on my car wheel adapter hub for motorcycles. It’s a simple, beautiful piece that will help us perverted bike builders to run a badass pin drive ’58 Indy 500 wheel on one of our “crazy” choppers. Hell, I might build a V-Rod on DUBS that pulls a Jacuzzi full of strippers. – More Later! (I built this bike for the SEMA show and I’ll send pics soon…)

S&S/G SQUARED BUELL SETS POMONA TRACK RECORD!–The Auto Club NHRA Finals held in Pomona, California kept the Pro Stock Motorcycle crowd on their feet all weekend. During the three days of qualifying fans saw Chip Ellis on the G Squared/S&S Buell hit 190.30 mph, Tom Bradford on the Hal’s H-D V-Twin Buell go 191.38 mph and Matt Smith on the G Squared/S&S/Red Line Oil Buell set a new track record with a 7.000 second, 189.82 mph pass!
The 160ci S&S Pro Stock-powered bikes made quite an impression this weekend by filling up six of 16 slots available for the finals on Sunday. Throughout the eliminations, S&S/Buell powered bikes moved up in the field, especially Chip Ellis who swapped engines just before the semi-finals and on an untuned S&S Pro Stock engine went 7.174 at 183.02 mph! The finals came down to Ryan Schnitz on the Team Muzzy Buell against Andrew Hines and his Vance and Hines bike. Hines red-lighted and handed the win to Schnitz-his third of the 15-round season. In fact, five of the 15-rounds this year were won by S&S Pro Stock powered bikes.
Other 160ci S&S Pro Stock-powered Buell motorcycles also did well this weekend with all six S&S-powered bikes going into the elimination rounds Sunday.

First, we hope everyone has fared the storm well, without any major personal or material damage.
As you all know, South Florida was hit pretty hard by hurricane Wilma, affecting everyone?s personal and business lives, most specially in Broward and Miami-Dade county.
Upon evaluation of the situation after hurricane Wilma and considering that for the next three weeks, the majority of the population in South Florida will be deeply concerned about getting their lives back to normal (over 1.5 million without power, shortage of gas, banks closed and 90% of retail business still closed), we have decided for postponing our 2005 show.

AUSTRALIAN COFFEE CONNECTION–An Australian man was having coffee and croissants with butter and jam in a cafe, when an American tourist, chewing gum, sat down next to him.The Australian politely ignored the American, who, nevertheless started up a conversation.
The American snapped his gum and said, “You Australian folk eat the whole bread?”
The Australian frowned, annoyed with being bothered during his breakfast, and replied, “Of course”.
The American blew a huge bubble. ” We don’t. In the states we only eat whats inside. The crusts we collect in a container, recycle them, transform then into croissants, and sell them to Australia.”
The American had a smirk on his face. The Australian listened in silence.
The American persisted. “D’ya eat jam with the bread?”
Sighing, the Australian replied, “Of course”.
Cracking his gum between his teeth, the American said, “We don’t. In the states we eat fresh fruit for breakfast, then we put all the peels, seeds, and leftovers in containers, recycle them, transform them into jam and sell it to Australia.”
The Australian then asked, “Do you have sex in the States?”
The American smiled and said, “Why, of course we do.” The Australian leaned closer to him and asked, “and what do you do with the condoms once you’ve used them?”
“We throw them away, of course”
Now it was the Australian’s turn to smile. “We don’t. In Australia, we put them in a container, recycle them, melt them down into chewing gum and sell them to the United States.
Why do you think its called Wrigley’s?”

BANDIT SURVIVES MEXICO-BARELY–You only go around once in life. Sometimes you need to take the bull by the horns and go for it. I don’t watch NASCAR, stock car racing or cars with 10-foot diameter tires run over compacts. I’m a biker. But when a brother invited me to help with his effort to enter the most dangerous road race on earth, from one end of Mexico to the other, I couldn’t turn him down. We rode to Sturgis several times and hung out for almost 20 years. Besides he’s Dr. Hamster. So I said sure.
We hauled ass over 6000 miles in the last two weeks. Some 2000 of it was from the bottom of Mexico to the Laredo border, the most dangerous car race on earth. Sixty cars entered the La Carrera Panamericana race and 36 survived to finish. We came in 2nd in our class, Original PanAm. Get this. We were the only 2-man team to drive to the race, endure the race and drive home. You know, run what ya brung. We raced through the hills of Mexico passed throngs of people and screamin’ kids (second largest spectator sport in Mexico) with our bags in the back, packin’ our own tools, while all the other teams had race crews and back-up trucks and trailers.

ONLY TWO WEEKS TO GO-VEGAS IS COMING– Suddenly it’s November and we have just two more weeks to go before Advanstar’s Big Twin West and our own second annual Official World Championship Of Custom Bike Building open for business at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
The World Championship has now passed the 100 competitor mark (105 as this is written), and competitors will be traveling to Las Vegas from more than twenty states and ten countries internationally. They will be showing nearly 170 bikes in total, and while everyone of them will be hoping they can carry off the prestigious title of World Champion for 2005, from the contacts we are having with them it is also perfectly clear that above all they are looking forward to what should be an unprecedented opportunity to meet industry colleagues and vendors. And maybe have a little fun along the way too!
On average the World Championship competitors will be spending some $5,000 of their own hard earned cash on getting to the event with their bike(s), and this marks an unprecedented investment into a Dealer Show and bike competition. We here at AMD are very grateful for the backing the ‘Builder Community’ is demonstrating for our endeavors, and are pulling out all possible stops to help ensure that they get maximum long-term benefit from their involvement.
As are the exhibitors who will be taking part in Big Twin West and the Custom Chrome Dealer Show. Everybody knows that the market has slowed down in the second half of this year, so not only does their involvement in the show reflect well on their determination to nonetheless invest in finding customers at a time when the cash cycle of the market is always at its slowest anyway, but also in their belief that the old suspicions surrounding West Coast/South West dealer events in general, and shows staged in the Fall in particular, are no longer relevant in the changed buying environment that the custom v-twin industry now enjoys.
There is much to look forward to at the event; and if you have not yet made up your mind to come and take a look, we here at AMD hope you will. The event has evolved into a ‘triple whammy’ of industry activity. Advanstar, the organizers of Big Twin West, are generously putting up some $50,000 of cash prizes for the World Championship, in addition to covering the costs of actually staging the competition; Custom Chrome are holding their annual Dealer Show at the same time, with exclusive vendor/dealer hours and show access the day before the event opens to the rest of the industry; and record numbers of exhibitors have bought booth space at Big Twin West.
Above all though it is the dealers who will be attending, and the competitors who are entering the World Championship, that will make this event the success it ‘feels’ like it is headed for. So, in advance of the show taking place, and we ourselves here at AMD having to head off in all sorts of directions as ‘multiple-show-syndrome’ strikes us before we are able to assemble in Las Vegas, it is timely to thank them in advance for planning to make the journey, and to say that everybody involved in the event looks forward to making them welcome.
If you haven’t already done so, you can register on-line to visit Big Twin West at http://www.bigtwinwest.com

DEADWOOD HANGIN’ CASE- – A civil trial in a case involving the ill-fated 2004 Sturgis Music Festival will begin as scheduled, according to court documents released this week. The case of TDG Communications v. Sturgis 2004 will commence with a motions hearing on Thursday, Nov. 3. A jury trial is scheduled for Nov. 7 and 8 in 4th Circuit Court, Lawrence County. Earlier this year TDG Communications sued Sturgis 2004, a Mississippi based company for services TDG provided to promote the Sturgis Music Festival. The company is suing for $48,000 in fees that were unpaid when the venture went sour in the middle of the 2004 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. TDG is also seeking punitive damages in the case, alleging that Rose never intended to pay them.Along with TDG’s claim, the suit also includes a claim by Ericka Hansen and Paul Barrow, of Kickstand Productions, Las Vegas. Hansen and Barrow, former partners with Rose, are alleging that Rose acted without authority when he pulled out of the Sturgis Music Festival taking an estimated $500,000 to $700,000 in revenue with him. –The Black Hills Pioneer –from Rogue MBA HOLDINGS ACQUIRES THUNDER RIDERS MAGAZINE– SCOTTSDALE, AZ — (MARKET WIRE) — 11/01/2005 — MBA Holdings, Inc. A blonde lady walked by and asked what they were doing. “We’re supposed to find the height of the flagpole,” said Bubba, “but we don’t have a ladder.” The woman took a wrench from her purse, loosened a few bolts, and laid the pole down. Then she took a tape measure from her pocket, took a measurement and announced, “Eighteen feet, six inches,” and walked away. Junior shook his head and laughed. “Ain’t that just like a dumb blonde? We ask for the height, and she gives us the length.” –from Buckshot THIS WEEK’S MOTORCYCLE ART– check out this lil’ project I’m working on this is the Motorcycle Femme Fatales, 4 working girls in the industry; Me, Joann, Goth and Sam Morgan Storm. On site at the all new Destination Daytona, Lane led his Blood Sweat & Gears builders through an amazing build with an incredibly emotional outcome. In front of thousands, Lane along with Kendall Johnson, Paul Cox, Aaron Greene and Mondo Lane worked on a bike in memory of fallen soldier Brandon Sapp. Brandon’s family was present throughout the build. John Sapp, Brandon’s dad along with his brothers and sisters watched as the bike came to life. Guest builder Jerry Covington joined Lane on stage to complete the bike too. Legendary painter Jon Kosmoski, founder of House of Kolor, agreed to paint the sheet metal. Jon received the sheet metal at the eleventh hour and began creating the paint that would memorialize Brandon on the bike. “When Billy suggested desert camouflage as part of the paint scheme, I thought, sure, that will be no problem. I soon realized how wrong I was. Camo is tough, it took me over six hours alone to tape the pattern off. When we finished the tank with Brandon’s image on it, I knew we had really done something great.” explained Kosmoski. Brandon’s father John Sapp agreed on stage Friday when Jon Kosmoski presented the finished sheet metal to him and Billy. “John, I want you to know that Brandon was with me the whole time. Each coat of clear I applied, he watched and followed me around the room. I feel like he approves too” Kosmoski told Sapp on stage. The entire Sapp family was speechless when the tank was unveiled. Lane added, “House of Kolor and Kosmoski are the very best, we needed the best for this bike, Brandon earned it”. Brandon Sapp joined the Army to add focus to his life. While serving in Iraq Brandon was killed at twenty one. He was driving a Bradley on a mission. During the mission it was said that he had a feeling about the route they were taking, he suggested they change routes at the last minute. His intuition pushed him to veer right. His quick thinking allowed nine other soldiers to come home alive. Brandon did not. He was killed instantly when a roadside bomb deployed beneath him in the Bradley. While serving, Brandon made a great friend, Timothy McClellan. “Mac” as he is called, is originally from Minnesota. Mac was invited by Billy to attend Biketoberfest and help him honor Brandon. Billy asked Mac to re-present the Red Cross Real Heroes Award to John Sapp in memory of Brandon. Mac agreed and drove to Daytona from Ft. Hood in Texas. With the bike build complete late in the day Saturday, Billy asked the builders to join him and the Sapp family to watch a video Lane had created to honor Brandon. The video played to hushed crowds and many, many tears. Brandon became everyone’s son at this moment. Billy asked attendees to please remember what these guys and gals are doing for us. Dying for our freedom. Billy started the bike and Paul Cox took the newly installed TP Engine through the gears during a crowd pleasing burn out on stage. Following the burn out, Billy presented the bike to Brandon’s dad John and asked him what he was going to do with it? Weeping, John stepped back and asked Mac what he thought of the bike. Mac sat on it with Brandon’s little brother Harry and said, “I love it and so would Brandon. This is all he ever talked about. His dream was to ride to Daytona with you on a custom bike. His dad sent him Easyriders magazines every month. He shared them with all of us.” With that said John stepped back and told Mac to take the bike and ride with Brandon forever. The crowd fell silent then audience members lined up to shake John’s hand and thank him for his sacrifice. The moment was unbelievable and powerful. The bikes built during the Tour are built for one purpose_ to thank military personnel serving to protect our freedom. Billy and the Blood Sweat & Gears Tour fabricate LIVE in your face throughout major rallies across the country. The Blood Sweat & Gears Tour is proudly supported by Dodge, Activision and House of Kolor. More support comes from Paisano Publications, Miller Welding, Chrome Hardware Supply, The Horse and Choppers Inc. For the Biketoberfest build, Billy leaned on TP Engineering for the 114ci engine used in the bike and Custom Chrome for lots of parts to get the bike running in time. In addition to Billy Lane, other great builders make this Tour a reality. They are Kendall Johnson, Aaron Greene, Paul Cox and Mondo each of whom is a regular builder featured on the Tour. “I can’t do this on my own” said Lane. “Without the support of the Blood Sweat & Gears sponsors like Dodge, Activision, House of Kolor, Bikernet.com and Paisano Publications and the guys that make it happen on stage, the Tour wouldn’t happen.” Lane summarized. “It is our greatest desire to keep this positive momentum rolling into 2006 and beyond. We really want to be able to give away more custom bikes. In order to do this, we are lining up sponsors for 2006 right now. We’ve had tremendous support so far, but need more folks interested in showing their support through Blood Sweat & Gears so we can keep delivering the goods.” added Darcy Betlach, Tour Manager. Saxon Motorcycle Launches The All New Ultra-Wide 300 Tire Griffin Model–CASA GRANDE, ARIZ – Sept. XX, 2005 – Saxon Motorcycle Company today introduced its all new Griffin model, one of the first manufactured motorcycles with the 300 mm rear tire. The model features ultra modern design elements and components. “The Griffin represents a motorcycle design that is truly on the cutting edge as far as technology and styling,” said David Schwam, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “By manufacturing a motorcycle with a 300 mm rear tire we are able to offer a radical semi-custom bike to the general public at an affordable price.” The Griffin has several features you would expect to see on a full custom motorcycle and with a base price of just $25,995, it can’t be beat. The frame is a single down tube right side drive frame and is coupled with a 6 speed transmission. The 45 degrees of overall rake, 6″ stretch in the down tube and 2″ stretch in the backbone make this a bike that will handle superbly. “We want to keep on the cutting edge of the industry and offer new models to keep up with the demand for something different. With the advent of the 300 mm tire, we wanted to find an appropriate platform that could show Saxon as an industry leader in innovation, performance and affordability,” said Schwam. With the launch of the Griffin, Saxon is rounding out its existing model line with a third chopper, which has a unique design and appeal. “The Griffin is a great complement to the Warlord, Firestorm, Sceptre and Black Crown. It allows us to go after the customer who wants the styling of a semi-custom super wide tire motorcycle while offering them the reliability, performance and value that Saxon is known for.” said Schwam. The Griffin will be available in Saxon Dealerships nationwide starting in late October, with its MSRP anticipated to start at $25,995. Highlights of the Griffin include: IT’S OFF TO TEXAS AGAIN–Goddamnit I just came from there and a Texas steakhouse got the best of me. They’re smuggling veggies from across the border. I know it. FLORIDA STATS SHOW HELMETLESS RIDERS LESS LIKELY TO DIE Not only do recently released injury and fatality statistics for 2004 in the state of Florida dispel predictions of a blood bath following repeal of that state’s helmet law, but reveal that motorcyclists wearing helmets were more likely to sustain an injury or suffer a fatality than their non-helmeted counterparts.
According to the recently released, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles annual Traffic Crash Statistics Report for 2004, of the 388 motorcycle riders killed in crashes on Florida roads last year, over 51% were wearing helmets. The crash facts also demonstrate that riders wearing helmets were more likely to sustain injuries than non-helmeted riders.
In each of the statistical focus topics presented in the study, the percentage numbers were very close between helmeted and non- helmeted riders, except for non-injury crashes. The study stated that non- helmeted riders were 20% more likely to walk away from a crash without injuries than riders who were wearing helmets.
The huge increase in death and injury to non-helmeted motorcycle riders, predicted by NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) in a report released this summer, has not been substantiated, and in fact was disproved.
“The numbers are going to disappoint the proponents of helmet laws while simultaneously confirming the facts presented to the public by ABATE of Florida, Inc.,” stated James “Doc” Reichenbach, President of ABATE of Florida, Inc., who’s group lobbied strongly for motorcycle helmet reform in 2000. “ABATE of Florida has spent years focusing on motorcycle related safety issues, including crash prevention and stiffer penalties for negligent vehicle operators who kill and injure motorcycle riders.”
ABATE of Florida, Inc. is spreading the word about motorcycle safety and awareness through high school drivers education programs, posters, flyers, the presentation of a free Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program, along with a series of annual safety seminars for the motorcycle riding and non-riding public.
In conjunction with the Florida legislature, ABATE is putting Billboards throughout the state to encourage drivers to be aware of motorcycles and to drive alertly.
Reichenbach, who also serves as Chairman of the Board for the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), added that “The numbers from the crash report for 2004 may favor our point of view, but even one death is too many.”
HELMET LAW HURTS ITALIAN SCOOTER MAKER Aprilia, the Italian motorcycle conglomerate that also owns Moto Guzzi and Laverda, has been hurt financially in recent years by a combination of factors and is negotiating with several banks to try to avoid defaulting on its debt, according to Italian news media.
One contributing factor is that scooter sales in Italy, the company’s primary market, have fallen off since 2001 when a new law passed requiring scooter riders to wear helmets.
Aprilia sold fewer than 2,000 motorcycles in the United States in 2003, accounting for less than 0.25% of the U.S. motorcycle market. European sales are far more critical to the company’s financial health than its relatively small U.S. operation.Meanwhile, Ducati recently announced it is preparing to make an offer to buy Moto Guzzi from Aprilia, which purchased the Moto Guzzi brand in 2001 by outbidding Ducati.
MANDATORY RE-TRAINING FOR ALL RIDERS? In an address to the Fifth International Motorcycle Conference, the President of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Tim Buche called for a “safety renewal” program, which essentially would involve ongoing rider training for all motorcycle riders.
During his presentation to the Conference, held in Munich, Germany in conjunction with the Intermot Show, Buche addressed the fact that most research has shown little benefit from the current U.S. rider-training formula, which essentially calls for a single, basic training course.
Although such training, which is mandatory in some states for younger riders, appears to have an initial benefit lasting perhaps six months for new riders, it doesn’t have any measurable benefits in longer terms. Buche announced new research that looks at more parameters and will focus in particular on repetitive training, where a rider would follow up his initial training with additional courses tailored for those with more experience and skills. The MSF news release about the presentation notes that a possible federal motorcycle-safety study might also shed light on the topic.
SOME USEFUL MOTORCYCLE STATISTICS:Of the over 6.5 million motorcycles registered in the United States, 282,389 were used for primary transportation.Of the 129 million US commuters, 147,703 rode motorcycles to work regularly.More than 20 million Americans surveyed in 2003 said they had ridden within the previous year. (Off-road riding accounted for a third of that figure.)3 to 5 motorcycles fit in one automobile parking space.Motorcycles get 50.1 m.p.g. on average, passenger cars 22.3 m.p.g., light trucks/SUVs 17.7 m.p.g.Sources: Ridetowork.com, Motorcycle Industry Council
SOME MORE USEFUL STATISTICS:DOCTORS: (A) There are 700,000 physicians in the U.S. (B) Accidental deaths caused by physicians total 120,000 per year. (C) Accidental death percentage per physician is 0.171.MOTORCYCLES: (A) There are over 6 million motorcycles registered in the U.S. (B) There were 4,008 motorcyclist fatalities in 2004. (C) The percentage of accidental deaths per motorcycle is 0.000668.Statistically, then, doctors are 256 times more dangerous to the public health than motorcycles. Fact: LESS THAN 2 PERCENT OF THE POPULATION OWNS A MOTORCYCLE, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.
CHINA LEADING THE WAY IN MOTORCYCLE SALES When most Americans think of motorcycle imports, they think of the Japanese brands Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki – the “Big Four”. But in fact, according to Business Wire, China has dominated the world’s production of motorcycles since 1994, churning out 14 million motorcycles in 2003. Exports surged from more than 3.4 million units (US$650 million) in 2002 to almost 9 million motorcycles (US$1.45 billion) last year–a phenomenal increase of 123 percent in value, and representing 48% of the global output. This is astounding growth even for an industry that has shown consistent strength.
Chinese motorcycles and associated products are now exported to some 200 countries, many of them in the developing regions of Southeast Asia, South Asia and Africa, and developed countries in the Middle East. Sales to the favored U.S. and European markets are also increasing.
MOTORCYCLES DAMAGE HEARING When the band Steppenwolf sang of heavy metal thunder in “Born to be Wild,” their classic ode to the freewheeling biker lifestyle, they equated rocking out to the new electric music of their time with the ear-pounding experience of riding a motorcycle. The notion that loud music can damage hearing is common knowledge, but the noise produced by motorcycles can pose similar risk to riders, University of Florida hearing experts’ caution.
In an informal survey of 33 motorcycles, UF audiologists at the College of Public Health and Health Professions have found nearly half produced sounds above 100 decibels when throttled up — equivalent in intensity to a loud rock concert or a chainsaw.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health cautions that exposure to noise at 100 decibels is safe for only 15 minutes. Permanent hearing loss can occur with prolonged exposure to any noise measuring 85 decibels or above. Although noise-induced hearing loss is permanent, it is preventable.
Although motorcycle helmets don’t provide any significant protection against noise, inexpensive foam earplugs, available at drug stores, can reduce sound levels by 20 decibels to 25 decibels.
Riders should pay attention to the warning signs of noise-induced hearing loss: a ringing sound in the ears immediately after exposure, and hearing voices and other sounds as muffled.
HELLO? Giving birth to a new catch phrase: “Hang up and RIDE!”, motorcyclists can join the cell phone rage now that there’s a new audio headset designed to fit under their helmets while they rumble down the road.
The “scala-rider” from Cardo Systems (www.cardowireless.com) is a Bluetooth headset that includes a wind-resistant microphone that provides clear audio for listening and talking while riding at speeds of up to 75 mph. The scala-rider also allows users to accept or reject incoming calls without letting go of the handlebars, by using voice controls.
WEIRD NEWS: Helmet Saves Rider From Lightening Strike. A Texas man is recovering from an accident in Colorado after being hit in the head by lightening. A gold chain and crucifix melted around his neck and burned a rope pattern in his skin when a lightning bolt struck Jason Crawford in the head while he and his brother were riding dirt bikes in Gunnison County, Colorado.
The bolt melted part of his helmet, fractured his skull and left burn scars on his chest and left arm. Still, Crawford knows it could have been worse. Doctors told him if he hadn’t had his helmet on, he would have died. Even with the helmet, it took 30 stitches to close a wound in his head caused by the freak lighting strike.
Jason Crawford, 31, and his brother John, 36, from Houston, Texas, were riding dirt bikes in Taylor Park recently when the bolt came out of the blue. Jason said they were on Italian Creek Pass when it started sprinkling and the bolt came without warning. John told the Grand Junction Sentinel that the lightning strike caused Jason to do a back flip off his motorbike and twist in the air before he landed on the ground, unable to move.
John said he didn’t know what to do and started screaming for help. Incredibly, a U.S. Forest Service ranger was nearby, heard the yells and came to their aid. He quickly used his two-way radio to call for an ambulance. Then several other dirt-bikers rode up and one was a doctor who checked out Jason’s vital signs. Luckily, his heart hadn’t stopped beating and Jason finally managed to talk. His first words after the accident were, “Don’t let me die.”
He was airlifted to a hospital in Grand Junction where he was treated and released a few days later, but doctors still don’t know the extent of the damage, due to scar tissue and unhealed injuries. He still can’t hear in one ear.
His brother, John, said it was a fluke that the lightning hit.
“What are the chances of being struck by lightning on a moving bike,” John told the Sentinel. “You can’t prepare for that.”
TASMANIAN BIKERS LOBBY AGAINST MOTORCYCLE LEVY Bikers in Tasmania, Australia successfully lobbied against a proposed $15-a-year levy to motorcycle licenses to fund a government sponsored safety campaign. The State Government’s controversial push to introduce the levy on motorcyclists to fund a safety program failed in the Legislative Council, due largely to objections raised by the motorcycle community.
Nine Independent MLCs voted against the legislation that they argued discriminated against motorcyclists and would set a dangerous user-pays precedent to the State. The Tasmanian Motorcycle Council led a strong lobby against the proposed law and said that motorcyclists should not have to pay for the strategy’s administration, arguing that it was inappropriate that $405,000 of levy funds would go to cover administrative costs.
The leader of the Government in the Upper House, Michael Aird, said that the Tasmanian Motorcycle Safety Strategy 2005-06 would now have to be abandoned.
Tasmanian Greens infrastructure spokesman Kim Booth congratulated the motorcycle council on its demand for equality in road safety training.”The responsibility is now back on the Labor Government to ensure that the necessary road safety training is still made available,” he said.State Opposition leader Rene Hidding said that the defeat of the bill showed the Government had failed to adequately consult the motorcycle community.

STEALTH REPORT–The air has a hint of fall in it around here and the temps are cool but there is still some good riding weather left. The toy runs are coming up and we attended one last weekend. Where did the summer go?
Here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS we have a rolling chassis for the 71 shovel project. The project is being built on a Santee wishbone frame, stock rake, no stretch. A Dave Mann centerfold style bike.We may have a couple more projects coming in soon. You never know but that is what makes this a great adventure, the unknown! One thing for sure is that things change real quick. It is just another roll of the dice!
Even though it is the fall season it seems our schedule is full. This Saturday we are headed to “The Gentlemen’s Club” annual “BikeBOOBerfest” bike show. This is one of the top bike shows in the Charlotte area. A couple of weeks down the road the CBA hold their annual fall bike show and swap meet.
We will have a booth set up there. One thing about trying to run a shop and keep it going is that you seem to never have enough time, but that is a good thing. Sometimes you just have to take a few minutes for yourself, to go for a ride and clear your head.
On a personal note “The Meanest” became a grandma this past weekend and I guess I became a step grandpa, boy that sounds strange? Alex was born Sunday Oct. 23rd. Mom and baby are doing fine. One last thing to add to the list of things going on, we sold our house and are moving into another house Nov. 7th. Did I mention that there never seems to be enough time?
That is it for now. I am running out of time!
Until next week, RIDE!

Metric Thunder Introduces the Thunder Saddle– Orange, California, October 25, 2005 – MetricThunder.com has launched a new seat for the Metric and Harley cruisers called, Thunder Saddle. The Thunder Saddle is available in a leather or vinyl flame seat and is designed for continual comfort during long rides. So whether the trip is for 500 miles or just around the block, every mile feels the same on the saddle.
“We worked closely with Saddlemen and designed a saddle with SaddleGel? which offers a comfortable ride mile after mile. We also enhanced the look of the seat with a flame theme that our riders really enjoy,” said Bob Osias, President of Metric Thunder.
Nothing can compare to a saddle made with SaddleGel?. SaddleGel? provides unsurpassed riding comfort by evenly distributing the body weight across the surface of the seat while absorbing and eliminating the extra pressure typically experienced at the hip bones and tail bone.
The Thunder Saddle comes with a colored flame stitch on the saddle and a stitched Metric Thunder logo on the back. Each saddle is available with numerous options including conchos, studs, side skirt and SaddleGel.
The Thunder/Saddlemen cruiser seat helped Metric Thunder bring back the gold in the Roadbike Magazine’s metric motorcycle contest in 2004 and 2005.

New trike from Apex uses V-8 power–APEX TRIKES, part of Apex Manufacturing headquartered in Warrington, Pennsylvania, has added a new trike to their range. The V-8 engine is rated at 430 horsepower and delivers 412ft.lb. of torque, which Apex considers sufficient for the most demanding enthusiast. The trike is designed and built to be fully DOT compliant and intended for practical use. Liquid cooling of the engine takes the heat through the frame and to a radiator at the back. Apex has over twenty years experience of precision engineering for an impressive range of industries which includes meeting military and aerospace standards of design and manufacture.
The engine is a 350ci unit, custom built to Apex’s specification. It drives a fully automatic Powerglide transmission, with two speeds and reverse, via a high stall speed torque converter. The rear axle is a hot rod classic – a 9in Ford unit located by the classic drag race four-link. The drivetrain is installed in a custom frame, CAD designed with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) technology. This is fabricated with mandrel bent sections and is subject to laser alignment.
Apex offers a number of upgrades to the basic specifications, with a fully molded frame or components such as an aluminum driveshaft, dual disc brakes (front and rear) and full instrumentation. Wheelie bars are offered for competition use. The trike is finished with a 19-gallon (US) gas tank, adjustable control and peg positions, stainless steel braided lines and a 2-1/2in mandrel bent exhaust system with tuneable, adjustable mufflers.
Standard colors are glossy black, yellow or candy apple red, but custom finishes can also be supplied.

SOMETHING WE WROTE–Your website made mention of the Myrtle Beach mayor’s comments (wanting to nudge a motorcylce). We hosted a successful ride in opposition to his comments and (politely) told him off in a City Council meeting. Find out more at http://www.RideMyrtleBeach.com.
