ABATE APPLAUDS SC LAWMAKERS FOR MOTORCYCLE RIGHTS BILL–(Columbia) – ABATE of South Carolina applauds those SC legislators, in boththe Senate and House of Representatives, who worked tirelessly to get S 772and H 4307 passed this legislative session. S 772 was a bill that dealt withhandlebar height restrictions and H 4307 corrected the property tax issuefacing South Carolina motorcycle owners.
Prior to H 4307 passing in the SCstatehouse, motorcycles registered in South Carolina were taxed annually at a10.5% assessment rate while other private, passenger vehicles such as cars andtrucks, were taxed at a 6% assessment rate.
If Governor Mark Sanford signs H4307 into law, South Carolina motorcyclists will no longer pay higher propertytax on their motorcycles than their car and truck counterparts. BIG NEWS FOR SMOKE-OUT FANS–Huge news for The HORSE Backstreet Choppers Smoke Out West this week. Billy Lane is building a Knucklehead bobber for this historic first West event. Billy has been a huge part of putting the Horse Smoke Out, Sponsored by Bikernet.com on the map.
When we started the East Coast Horse Smoke Out event years ago- it was all altruistic. We wanted an event for choppers and builders. Billy Lane is obviously a huge star now but he really has not changed in his support for everything Chopper. He has a travel schedule that would kill a mere mortal –so I was just happy as hell to hear he could make it. When I heard that he his building a bike especially for the event, it rocked my world. Some builders talk about their support for the underground chopper world but Billy walks the walk.
The HORSE Backstreet Choppers Smoke Out is the world’s largest Chopper Rally and will be held out West for the first time October 6 and 7, 2006, on the Verde Valley Fairground in Cottonwood, AZ (20 minutes South of Sedona). For more information (or a vender packet) check the HORSE BC website (theHorsemag.com) or call (800) 531-9733. See ya there. Edge

Law enforcement agencies have been meeting as often as twice a week to prepare and discuss ways to reduce the the risk of violence.
They’ve also been talking with officials in Laconia and other places where previous Hells Angels events have been held.
The Hells Angels had their 2003 World Run in Laconia.Afterwards, New Hampshire officials described the event as relatively quiet, with just one bar fight reported. Police spent 273-thousand dollars making sure things stayed calm.

PRE-SUNDAY POST-RELIGIOUS MOMENT–Jeff and Mike were killed in an accident. Jeff arrives at the Pearly Gates, and is met by St. Peter.
“Where is my friend Mike?” Jeff asks.
St. Peter replies, “Well, Mike was not as fortunate as you. He went in the other direction instead of getting into Heaven.”
Jeff was bothered by this and asked, “Well, could I see Mike one more time just to be sure he is OK?”
So, Jeff and St. Peter walked over to the edge of Heaven and looked down. There was Mike, on a sandy beach, with a gorgeous sexy blonde in a bikini, and a keg of beer.
“I don’t mean to complain, but Mike seems to have it pretty nice down there in Hell,” says Jeff.
“It’s not as it appears to be,” says St. Peter. “You see, the keg has a hole in it and the blonde doesn’t.”

PETITION FAILS IN BLACK HILLS– Meade County petitioners who sought enough signatures to force a countywide referendum on the Rock’n the Rally at Glencoe CampResort liquor license have indeed fallen short, Auditor Lisa Schieffer confirmed Wednesday.
Schieffer said that she counted 669 names on petitions submitted by Tuesday’s 5 p.m. filing deadline. She said they needed at least 745 signatures to qualify as a ballot measure.
The Bear Butte International Alliance and other liquor license opponents fell short of their own estimates. Shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday, the alliance’s Nancy Kile estimated that they had gathered 736 signatures.
They sought to refer the Meade County Commission’s decision on May 2 to issue a new liquor license to Rock’n the Rally owner Gary Lippold. The commission voted 5-0 to issue the license despite strong objections from American Indian groups and some eastern Meade County residents.
Opponents complain that the rally continues to encroach on Bear Butte, which they claim as sacred, and rural eastern Meade County.
Lippold, whose family has owned the Glencoe land south of Bear Butte for 100 years, has operated the Sturgis rally campground there since 1983. This year, he’s adding Rock’n the Rally, a concert venue that will bring national music acts during the annual August event.
Lippold said he needs a liquor license to draw the corporate sponsors and upscale crowds he needs to make the venue a success.
“This is one step in a long process, but it’s very satisfying because I think the citizens of Meade County have spoken,” Lippold said Wednesday after hearing the petition drive had fallen short.
“What the people need to realize is that this venture is going to go on with or without a (liquor) license, and we are going to have music concerts out here,” he added. “We just need to work together and minimize whatever problems there are and quit wasting a bunch of money on lawyers.”
That hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, June 9, at the Meade County Courthouse.

RSD “Contrast Cut” JUDGE WHEELS–Who the hell is RSD and What the heck is a “Contrast Cut” wheel? Well, RSD is none other then Roland Sands Design, the designer behind PM’s wheels. He’s taken some of the work he’s done for PM and given it his own twist.
Roland tells us, they achieve this look by polishing and black anodizing the wheel prior to cutting the shape into it and then leaving the newly exposed aluminum in its raw state. The effect is a stunning contrast between natural metal and the smooth finish of the black ano, and an aptly named wheel.
For now, PM and RSD are only doing this unique finish on the Judge design (brand new for 2006), but already have matching black anodized pulleys, discs and sprockets.

MORE ON CALIFORNIA HELMET LAW UNCONSTITUTIONAL–After years of hard work and numerous court appearances, word comes to me today that last Friday, Quigley got a favorable ruling in his helmet case. This case was in Superior Court for Santa Cruz County. The DA did not object, but only asked if there would be an injunction issued. Judge Barton stated that he would make his formal ruling in writing on June 23rd, as to the injunction. What this means is Santa Cruz County found the California helmet law unconstitutional. Quig told me people are out already riding without helmets and he does not know of any tickets issued.
This does not take out the law statewide, but certainly, anyone with a ticket elsewhere can use the Santa Cruz ruling in argument. Hopefully, the judge will issue the injunction on the 23rd, and Quig feels confident that will happen. In court with Quig were four other BOLT members, who have stood by him large and strong, when no others would. No compromise in his heart, Quig actually spoke in opposition of ABATE’s repeal bill, since it conceded too many things and did not include everyone, but only 21 and over and other restrictions.
Great work. If this finalizes on the 23rd, many in the rights community owe Quig a great deal gratitude, and some need to explain some of their actions. This would be a wonderful victory for Quig, whose time is limited on this planet. Just wanted you guys to be the first to know.
Let’s hold our breath and hope the judge doesn’t change his ruling by the 23rd. I’ll be in New York, but I’m sure there will be a media blitz if this happens.

AVON TYRE QUESTION OF THE WEEK–Rain grooves and bridge grates.Have you ever experienced that heart-in-throat moment when faced with crossing a steel grated bridge. To top it all off it’s raining and dark. For most motorcyclists this is the moment of truth when you find out just how brave you really are. Experiencing your bike doing theWatussi as it weaves and wobbles across is enough to check into a box of Depends. Fortunately, there is a cure.
When buying tires avoid a tire with a center groove(s). This type of tire will lock onto bridge grates or rain grooves like white on rice giving you a miserable ride. Find a tire with an interrupted center groove or zigzag groove (see photos). Avon’s Venom is the perfect tire for riding over these surfaces with not a care in the world. The front tire features an interrupted center groove and the rear has no center groove, allowing carefree handling in these types of situations. Get out of the groove and into a set of Avons.

CARLOS ORTA COMES TO BIKERNET–My name is Carlos Orta a Custom Bike Builder/Artist from Miami Florida. I am writing to introduce my work to you in the hopes that you may find it interesting enough to publish. I am quite sure that you have seen your share of custom motorcycles but I can definitely assure you that you have never seen anything like the Black Rose.
Please be advised for your information that every bit of the custom fabrication was done by me as I must have full control of the creation in order for it to come out to my satisfaction. Also, please be aware that all the custom leather pieces on the Rose except for the seat ARE NOT LEATHER, they are in fact aluminum sculpted pieces made to look like leather. I have tried to put as much detail as possible on the leather/aluminum parts such as the corset, tag mount, pipe heat shields and head covers by crafting in the texture and even the stitching for a realistic look.
The Rose has many unique parts from the stainless steel oil tank with its protruding spout to the stainless steel one of its kind brake and clutch levers which extend to 16″ which are complimented by the stainless steel and brass Victorian style oil cup brake master cylinder design.
Another very unique part of the bike is it’s saddle inspired by the Mongolian riding saddles and adorned with a pierced phallus riding horn and pierced tongue rear section.
I would really appreciate you taking the time to visit my web page http://www.ortamotorcycles.com/ and entering the Art Gallery through the Main Menu to view her. Please scroll over the thumbnails then click on a picture. When you click a thumbnail the description of the part will appear in the frame the model is holding along with a link to enlarge the photo to get a more detailed look.

FEAR ITSELF TO JOIN ALICE IN CHAINS, NUGENT, KID ROCK, OTHERS AT BUFFALO CHIP FOR 2006 STURGIS MOTORCYCLE RALLY– Fear Itself’s new album due out a month before half a million bikers and fans descend upon Sturgis to hear hard rock’s top stars
May 26, 2006 Pittsburgh, PA Fear Itself will join hard rock’s great bands, including Alice in Chains, Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, Alice Cooper, Buckcherry, George Thorogood, Billy Idol, and others at the Buffalo Chip campground at the 2006 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Over 500,000 people have attended the Rally in 2005, making it one of the largest outdoor music events in the world. The event is estimated to draw 600,000 fans this year. Fear Itself is tentatively scheduled to play seven shows throughout the week starting on Friday, August 4th.
Fear Itself, a Pittsburgh-based heavy rock band, found prominence in 2004 with its first EP, White Spider, and with a 2005 tour of Pittsburgh and surrounding areas to promote said CD. Gero von Dehn, the founder, guitarist, and lead singer of Fear Itself, saw his popularity skyrocket with the band’s Seattle premier at the Layne Staley Tribute concert at the Showbox in Seattle. One thousand fans saw Fear Itself slash into the northwest music scene. Fear Itself completed its 2005 season at the famed CBGBs in New York City for MEANYfest. von Dehn is flanked by guitarist Giac Cardello, bassist Tom Caste, and drummer Lyle Clevenger.
Mike Ference of Pittsburgh’s Front Weekly observed that “(Fear Itself’s) roots include 80s hard rock and heavy metal with and a dash of 90s hard rock and grunge thrown in for good measure.” The Volcano of Seattle declares that “?the night will be owned by Fear Itself, who dispense metal flavored rock reminiscent of Alice In Chains.”

Hey,
Let me know if you did the same to this year, 2006. I told myself that I was going to cut the number of projects outlined for 2006 and kick back. Yeah right, we have two bikes flying together for Bonneville and Sturgis. Another bike is taking shape at Lucky Devils Metal Works in Houston. Jay needed some cash so we bought a basket ’98 Evo and last week Black Market John crashed our 2004 1200 Sporty. We’re building Layla’s kitchen. I’m trying to finish another book this year, write for three MC magazines and update Bikernet every fuckin’ day.
Do you find yourself overwhelmed with projects? Now what? If I can finish the news fast enough, I’m making a trip to the Powder Coater and the Bonneville Bikes hit another stage. Let’s do it:
TRUE TRACK QUESTION OF THE DAY–I recently bought a True-Track for my 2001 Road King. They also sent me information saying that unless I change my swing arm bushings they will go bad within 10,000 miles. I figured that maybe you could help me out as you wrote the article on True-Track. I would also appreciate your opinion on the bushing change, as it is not addressed in your article at http://www.bikernet.com/garage/truetrack.asp.
H-D changed the swing arm bushings to bearings in 2002, so my 2001 is the last year for the bushings. You can’t update the 2001 and earlier swing arms to the new bearing setup because the early swing arm bushing holes are too large for the later bearings, which are failing.
Yesterday I was told there is an update to those now. A brother of mine’s 2005 model failed at 8,000 miles on his Dyna Wide Glide. The bike goes into the wobbles at 70 down a straight smooth road. In the corners it is very scary. Add a bump to the corner and it will leave a load in your pants.

The CLEVE BLOCK– swing arm bushings on 1980 thru 2001 are the source of many law suits. The Cleve Blocks are subject to failure because they are a composition of 6 parts, including a liquid silicon. Force from the rear wheel loads the Cleve Blocks and causes the internal components to move against each other and fail. It is a weak link!
H-D replaced this part and went to a SOLID SPHERICAL BEARING in 2002 to correct this weak link. You cannot have a flexible swing arm bushing, Plastic Rubber or multipule components.NEW WEB SITE WILL BE UP SOON.

BUELL DEALER TEAMS COMPETE IN AMA RACE AT ROAD AMERICA– Buell dealer teams competed in the AMA Formula Xtreme race at the AMA Superbike Championship event at the Road America course. Steve Crevier, riding a Buell XBRR for Deeley Harley-Davidson/Buell Canada, ran as high as seventh position before ultimately crashing out of the race. Classic H-D/Buell-Millville H-D/Buell-Fastbuells.com rider David Estok finished in 14th place on another Buell XBRR. The race was won by Yamaha USA factory rider Eric Bostrom on a Yamaha YZF-6R.
Estok was riding as a last-minute replacement for Mike Hale, who was injured in a crash during testing last week at Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia. Hale intended to ride at Road America, but a practice session on Thursday determined he was not ready for the race weekend. Estok, who won the ASRA Thunderbike Championship for the team in 2005, was asked to fill in for Hale. A rain storm eliminated Formula Xtreme practice on Friday, and Estok, who had to qualify with limited time to work on bike set-up, started in 20th position for the 10-lap race.
“We just missed on our set-up,” said Estok “We didn’t have much track time to get things sorted out.”
Crevier also had a disappointing qualifying session, and lined up for the race start in 16th position. Post qualifying adjustments made to his bike improved its performance, however, and Crevier moved up to eighth place after the first lap and was in seventh place on lap three when he was assessed a stop-and-go penalty by AMA race officials for jumping the race start. Crevier had indeed left his starting-line spot early, but pulled the bike back into position and was not moving forward when the race began. After stopping in the pits, Crevier dropped to 17th position, but moved back up to 12th on the next lap before crashing out unhurt in Turn 1 on lap seven to end his day.
“We are proud of the effort these Buell dealer teams and their riders put in today,” said Buell Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. “David Estok filled in admirably for Mike Hale, despite very little seat time. And I think Steve Crevier was headed for a great finish before the stop-and-go penalty, then he crashed while pushing hard trying to make up the lost time. The XBRR was reliable this weekend, so we’ve made progress in that regard. These teams are on the go.”
Both Buell dealer teams received support from Pirelli Tires, Sentry Insurance, Harley-Davidson Financial Services, Screamin’ Eagle SYN3 Synthetic Motorcycle Lubricant, and Harley-Davidson Visa.
The Buell XBRR is a limited-edition production racing motorcycle based on the Firebolt XB12R reworked at the factory for closed-course competition. It offers private racers a professional-level, race-ready, production-based platform.
CALIFA HELMET LAW FOUND UNCONSTITUTIONAL–I just got word that my BOLT guys up in Santa Cruz won the court case there. It was in Superior Court, and Judge Barton made the preliminary ruling that the helmet law in California is unconstitutional. This is Superior Court. The DA asked if he was going to issue an injunction, but the judge said he would hand down his final verdict in writing on June 23rd. My guys tell me the judge is in solid and it’s a done deal, but of course I don’t count anything until I see it in writing. Just wanted to give you a heads up on this.
When the final ruling comes down, I’ll be in New York, but the BOLT members will have a media blitz and it should make it state-wide. I’m told they’re already riding without helmets in Aptos, Watsonville, and area, and no tickets are known to have been issued. If the judge issues an injunction, it sets the stage for bikers throughout California to ride without helmets, and if ticketed, go to court with the Santa Cruz case in hand. Let’s hope for the best.

THE 250 PAGNINI CHOPPER REVIEW–I saw the article on the Pag 250 choppers, cool bikes, folks at my bike forum were interested, but I then discovered that the original company Here’s a link to some of the dissatisfied people at an Aussie bike sales company. I don’t think Alan Lazarus is going to have a bright future selling Pag’s bikes in Oz. Cheers: Jaq. LATEST PAGNINI FLASH FROM AUSTRALIA–I posted the link (on my local Aussie wide Internet bike forum) to Pag’s site with the Spyder pics about eight hours ago. I’ve already had over a dozen emails from people asking where they can go to test ride one, buy one etc. I think he’s on a winner with his 250 chopper idea, here in Sydney learner riders have a CC limit of 650cc (depending on brake horsepower) for the first six months to a year.In Melbourne (state of Victoria) they are limited to 250 only, same with Canberra I think.More than half of the emails have been from girls who love the design and the low seat height. Two guys who ride big bikes want them for around town and commuting to work, another couple of guys have bought Vespa style scooters but say they would swap for a Spyder in a second. I have an idea…I gather you may be doing an article on the Spyders in a few days? You should get Pag to lend one to Layla for a week or so.She’s a petite lady, she’s not really strong, I know she struggled with the Sportster when first riding it.She would be the perfect person to do a proper test on a Spyder, she’s the very person the bikes are aimed at.She can ride it, evaluate it, write a review on it for Bikernet. We can pass those reviews onto people around the world. I really hope he and his son can make a go of this. I’m sure I could find someone in Sydney who would be willing to import the Spyders, someone I trust myself, I would not recommend anyone I did not think was 100%. Cheers: Jaq. BIKERNET RADIO INTERVIEWS THE SAXON TEAM IN LAUGHLIN–The Thunder Bobman stopped in to see what’s up with the Saxon contingency of custom motorcycles at the Laughlin, NV run. HARDBIKES 330 NEO-BOBBER IS BUILT TO GO FAST, TURN WELL AND LOOK GOOD–Take one part Chopper and two parts Pro-Street add a dash of 330 mm meat with a pinch of a high-output v-twin and you get what Hardbikes calls a 330 NEO Bobber. “The inspiration of the design is a Hot Rod Chopper that blends the handling of a Pro-Street sled and the edginess of a Chopper,” said Bob Kay, Hardbikes VP Sales and Marketing. “The engineers at Hardbikes took my design and worked on the rake, trail and the placement of the swingarm pivot, which created an outstanding handling motorcycle. I’m so pleased with the design that I feel that the 330 NEO Bobber is the best handling 330 tire motorcycle in the marketplace today.” The 330 NEO Bobber runs a 330 millimeters of meat and sits on a 12 inch deep chrome rim connected to a flowing dual rail swing arm, front mounted remote oil tank and curved double downtubes. In addition, the NEO Bobber runs a drop-seat color matched frame; 40 degree rake with 5 degree trees; 5 inch backbone stretch with curved double downtubes; super stretched chopper tank; Hardbikes designed second look tread pattern front fender with scultped rear fender; Torian right-side exhaust pipe by D&D Performance Exhaust and an 111cu in S&S Engine with IST Ignition. Hardbikes converts owners into custom motorcycle designers by allowing them to design their own 330 NEO Bobber. They log onto the Hardbikes website, www.hardbikes.com, and build their custom-fit motorcycle from a deep-list of quality parts in the software application called the Design Wizard. After the design is completed, owners sit down with their local dealer-designer to be fitted for the bike according to their physical dimensions and riding style. “The 330 NEO Bobber has become not only a crowd pleaser but a best seller at Hardbikes,” explained Kay. “It’s been very satisfying that our customers ‘get-the-design-concept’ and comment on how neutral the handling is and how easy it is to ride once they get into the grove.” Each Hardbikes motorcycle is built with the synergy of Hardbikes engineering, owner input and world-class suppliers. Hardbikes’ suppliers include Weld Wheels, Hawg Halters with differential bore for better stopping, Tech Starters, Torian right-side exhaust pipe by D&D Performance Exhaust, Primo Brute Belt Drives, Drag Specialties and Riveria High Performance Clutch. BIKERNET WEEKLY PHOTO ART EXHIBIT–Shot this at The Rooster not long ago around dusk. It reminded me of when I was a kid growing up close to the French Quarter of New Orleans (R.I.P.). I would have to pass The ReeTee, a biker bar, on the way home every day and it always had bikes parked out front. “100 Great Years”
By Bikernet Contributor Segal Fine Motorcycle Art |
Scott Jacobs, the forefather of contemporary Harley-Davidson artists has produced a work that is worthy of the moniker “Official 100th Anniversary Artwork.” Scott is honored to have had the opportunity to work closely with Willie G. Davidson on this project. Scott states: “I think Willie G. and I each had the same vision of what the painting would be; the difficulty was in selecting the bikes that best describe the last 100 years.” After picking the bikes, Scott and his photographer, Jeff Hackett, began the process of documenting the bikes on film. “Being a photo-realist artist, my goal here was to arrange seven bikes in such a manner that you could see the tanks and as much engine as possible.” The task proved more difficult than originally thought. Each bike has to be perfectly spaced apart and then Jeff Hackett climbed a ladder eight feet high to shoot the bikes. After sixty or so shots Scott finally had what he needed to render the painting.
Working on a project as important as the 100th Anniversary was an awe-inspiring moment in Mr. Jacob’s career. Scott added: “In all my years as an artist (since high school) I have never been involved in a project like this; by that I mean something so important that would be viewed by so many people. It?s hard to describe how challenging this painting was. Shortly after the work was completed I felt totally spent, physically and mentally.”
In documenting the painting, Scott shot progress photos for each significant step. This was accomplished at intervals during the 421 hours it took to finish the painting. Two days were spent just on the initial drawing. As an added realistic quality, Scott used 23k gold leafing on two of the tank logos. Scott said: “The reward will come when I personally see the expressions on the faces at the dealer show in Orlando and hopefully my sense will be that I have arrived. Good luck in the next 100 years, Harley-Davidson, and I’m glad to be part of the family.”

NCOM CONVENTION IN DERBY CITY Kentucky hospitality greeted a near-record number of motorcyclists? rights activists to Louisville for the 21st annual NCOM Convention, held Mother?s Day weekend, May 11-13, 2006 at the spacious Executive Inn.
Nearly 1,300 bikers attended the National Coalition of Motorcyclists? Convention, coming from virtually every state and representing most Motorcyclists? Rights Organizations and Confederations of Clubs across the country.
Hosted by the Kentucky Motorcycle Association/KBA and the Kentucky Confederation of Clubs, this annual gathering draws prominent leaders in the bikers? rights movement to different locations every year to discuss topics of concern to all riders. Meetings, seminars and group discussions focused on safety issues, legal rights, legislative efforts and litigation techniques to benefit our right to ride.
Highlights of the 3-day conference included an insightful presentation by researcher and author Wendy Moon, ?Fatal Design ? SUV vs. Motorcycle? which offers an intriguing explanation as to why motorcycle injuries and fatalities are increasing yet motorcycle accidents are decreasing.
This year?s agenda was packed with informative and thought provoking meetings such as the NCOM Board of Directors Meeting, NCOM Legislative Task Force Meeting, A.I.M. Attorney Conference, A.I.M. Chiefs of Staff Meeting, Christian Unity Conference, Clean and Sober Roundtable, Women In Motorcycling, SMRO President?s Meeting, American Biker Party Conference, and the popular and always inspiring Confederations of Clubs General Patch Holder Meeting.
Seminars and workshops included ?Freedom of the Road & Use of the Courts?, ?Discrimination ? A Practical Approach?, ?Fundamentals of Forming a Motorcycle Caucus?, ?Getting Our People Elected on a Shoestring Budget? ?Back to Basics ? Lobbying 101? and ?Patriot Law and Pending Gang Legislation?.

DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION The highway death rate increased in 2005 for the first time in about 20 years, and a new federal report suggests that driving distracted may be responsible for nearly 8 in 10 crashes.
Preliminary figures from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that despite increased usage of safety belts and attention to drunken driving, 43,200 people died in car crashes last year, up from 42,636 in 2004.
In a separate report issued the same day, NHTSA and Virginia Tech’s Transportation Institute released research findings that driving distracted is a more serious problem than previously known, and indicated nearly 80% of crashes and near-crashes involve driver inattention up to three seconds before the incident. The most common causes of distraction were cellphone use and drowsiness.
The research, which NHTSA called “breakthrough,” tracked the drivers of 100 vehicles equipped with video and sensor devices for more than one year, providing more than 43,300 hours of data. In nearly 2 million miles of driving, 241 drivers of the cars were involved in 82 crashes and 761 near-crashes.
Connecticut, New York and New Jersey ban drivers from using handheld cell phones. Washington, D.C., bans use of handheld cell phones or any other electronic device. New Hampshire bans all driver distractions.
A government report last year found that about 10 percent of drivers are using cell phones.
Automakers are refining technologies that sense when a vehicle is about to crash and apply brakes and steer the car out of trouble.
WISCONSIN ENACTS ROADWAY USERS RESPONSIBILITY ACT The Roadway Users Responsibility Act contains numerous pro-motorcycle provisions and represents a huge victory for Wisconsin bikers.
Senator Dave Zien, longtime motorcycle rights activist and member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Legislative Task Force, was one of the chief authors and sponsors of the legislation.
Among its provisions, AB 964 / S 528 increases penalties for motorists who cause injury or the death of other roadway users. If the victim of the crash is a motorcyclist, bicyclist or pedestrian, the violator must attend an Awareness Class to learn how to Share the Road.
Also under the measure, all Driver Education classes will be required to include Share the Road with Motorcycles portion. In another section, a paperwork reduction portion will allow a Motorcycle Rider Education graduate to bypass the Learners Permit requirement prior to obtaining their motorcycle endorsement.
Lastly, the bill will allow a motorcycle, moped or bicycle to proceed through a red vehicle actuated traffic signal that does not recognize their vehicle when the path is clear and after waiting 45 seconds.
TATTOOING IS OK Oklahoma?s SB 806, a proposal to Regulate and Legalize Artistic Tattooing, has been signed into law by Governor Brad Henry and will become law on November 1st.
?Many thanks to all lovers of Freedom and Artistic Expression out there that weighed in with their legislators on this important First Amendment and Public Health issue,? said Tiger Mike Revere, President of ABATE of Oklahoma and a member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Board of Directors.
?With the Governor’s signature, a long and embarrassing chapter in our state’s history should draw to a close,? said Tiger Mike, referring to the fact that Oklahoma is the last state in the nation to legalize tattooing. South Carolina was the49th state to do so in 2004.
Because illegal tattooing was occurring, Governor Henry said it is important for the state to step in to make sure that people getting a tattoo don?t also contract a disease such as HIV or hepatitis B or C.
The measure requires all tattoo operators to be licensed by the Oklahoma State Department of Health, which will establish rules and standards for tattooing.
DR. PHIL, MOTORCYCLE SAFETY ADVOCATE Motorcycling fans have found a new friend in the mass media: Dr. Phil McGraw of the popular Dr. Phil television show. And thanks to Helmet House and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, millions of viewers on Tuesday, April 18 tuned in as the good doctor helped a young Marine from Bay St. Louis, Miss., discover the right way to ride a motorcycle.
The producers of the Ask Dr. Phil and Robin segment needed our help with some riding apparel, said Richard Kimes, national marketing manager for Helmet House. They were filming a segment about a Marine, George Goetz, who had just returned home after a tour of duty in Iraq. Anxious to experience the thrill of motorcycling, he decided to spend some of his savings on a sport bike. Goetz began riding without any training or a motorcycle license. And, although he had a helmet, he lacked any other protective riding apparel. His mother was so concerned that she hid his keys. That?s when Dr. Phil got involved, said Kimes.
With Dr. Phil as the referee, the story unfolded in front of a national audience.
Dr. Phil is an avid motorcyclist who frequently rode a dirt bike in the past, said Kimes, who attended the taping of the show. Dr. Phil brokered a deal between Goetz and his mother: if the young man would take training, get licensed and wear the proper gear, his mom would return his motorcycle keys.
Dr. Phil then introduced Rob Gladden from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, who presented Goetz with a new set of safety gear and explained that the MSF had arranged a special Basic RiderCourse for Goetz and 11 of his buddies.
A young hero and his mother got a helping hand from Dr. Phil. It’s just another example of how motorcyclists really do help one another.
NEWS OF THE WEIRD: DEAF WOMAN SUES RIDER ED FOR NOT PROVIDING SIGNER A deaf Tampa-area woman who wanted to take an adult education class on motorcycle riding is suing the Hillsborough County school district for not providing a sign language interpreter.
“They are discriminating against me, which I felt is not right,” Merrie Carol Paul said in an interview conducted through a telephone relay system. “One of my dreams is that I wanted to ride my own motorcycle. … I love to ride motorcycles because I can do it. It doesn’t matter if I am deaf or not. I love to feel the spirit. It is me.”
Paul, 46, claims in a federal lawsuit that the district violated the Americans With Disabilities Act when officials refused to provide the interpreter when she signed up to take the class last year.
Paul said she was told the $175 class fee would not cover the cost of an interpreter. In the lawsuit, she says she was told she was welcome to bring her own interpreter, which the suit states would have cost her $2,340.
When asked if the district provides sign language interpreters for people in adult education classes, school district spokesman Stephen Hegarty said, “Regardless of what kind of class it is, the law requires that we make reasonable accommodations, and frequently litigation arises over how to define reasonable.” Hegarty added he did not know whether a sign language interpreter ever has been requested for an adult school class.
Deaf from birth, Paul said she rode motorcycles with her parents as a teenager in Michigan. She said she passed a written test but needs to take the course to obtain her license.
“I have my motorcycle in my garage, and it is waiting for me,” she said.

MRF LEADERS’ REPORT–Federal Motorcycle Safety Grant Program Announced. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced it is ready to begin rolling out the Federal Motorcycle Safety Grant Program championed by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation and included as part of the most recent Highway Bill (PL 109-59).
This first step allows the public to comment on NHTSA’s ideas on how the program should operate and what it should accomplish. Once this mandatory comment period is closed on June 23rd, 2006 there is no way to influence how the program is administered.
“This program has the potential to save lives across the country, the sooner the federal government brings the grant program online, the sooner we can start to see the benefits” said Jeff Hennie, vice president of government relations, Motorcycle Riders Foundation.
In order to submit comments or just read NHTSA’s proposal simply direct your computer to The MRF will continue to keep you informed on all up to the minute information on this grant program and all other news from Washington DC that affects Motorcyclists and their lifestyle. RIGHT TO REPAIR PASSES HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE–The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protections passed HR 2048, the motor vehicle “Right to Repair Act of 2005”. HR 2048 was amended during the markup process to address concerns that this bill would indirectly encourage the sending jobs and US dollars to China and other foreign countries. The Committee overwhelmingly agreed to the amendments. The final version of the bill will still provide all of the consumer rights protections intended in the original legislation. While the vote was nearly party line, there were several of the Democrat co-sponsors who voted against the legislation for unknown reasons. The final tally was 14 Yeas versus 13 Nay votes. “Now that we have cleared the subcommittee hurdle we must focus on the full Energy and Committee,” said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government relations for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF). “This is a great victory, but we are not nearly finished yet.” The Motor Vehicle Right to Repair Act of 2005 was introduced in May of last year by Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX) and Edolphus Towns (D-NY). One year later the bill has more than 100 bipartisan supporters. The legislative intent of this measure is to offer protections for the American motor vehicle owner by making it illegal for the manufacturer of the motor vehicle to withhold information necessary to diagnose, service, or repair the motor vehicle. The MRF has formally committed to support HR 2048 believing safeguarding individual ownership rights is an absolute must. Access to accurate information when related to the repair or upkeep of a vehicle is essential to the safety and well being of the entire American motoring public. The goal of HR 2048 is to guarantee individual owners and repair shops have access to aftermarket parts and the same tools and training offered to individuals within the dealership network. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation will continue to update you with the most current information available about this issue. MOTORCYCLE RIDERS ASSOCIAT OF AUSTRALIA REPORTS–I got word of a “Road Safety” summit in Queensland recently. As a result they want to take this stuff nationally and I believe the Old Premier has written to the Prime Minister about it. I’ve been through the Hansard report of the summit (attached) and in the motorcycle part there are some serious issues in there that will need to be addressed.Especially since there was that suggestion that they want to take themnationally.–Jaqhama One bit that needs correcting was in the Transport Minister’sspeech…”Motorbike riders are considered at fault in 84 per cent of motorbikerelated fatal crashes” The Premier came out with:”Let us talk about motorbikes. They contribute to a significant number of accidents. We need to assess the testing of radio frequency identification for motorcycles to enable better detection of speeding motorcycle riders.” From Narelle Haworth’s presentation it’s around “reducing exposure” and some of it seems to draw from the discredited proposal that MUARC did for Tasmania. “Our first recommendation is increasing the minimum age for riding.Given that fatality and injury risks for motorcycling are much higher than that for driving cars, why do we let young people ride around unsupervised on a motorcycle six months earlier than they can drive around unaccompanied in a car? It does not make sense. Increasing that minimum age will actually have a direct effect by reducing the number of riders in the highest risk age category. It will also result in more of the new riders actually having some basic car driving experience and, therefore, some traffic skills that they have acquired in a safer manner. ” (Missing the point completely that many young drivers who do not want a car will not have a car licence and therefore will just wait and get their bike licence anyway.)and this one!! “In terms of taking advantage of improvements in technology, you really need to allow access to a wider range of motorcycles. I make that recommendation with some concern for the potential for encouraging motorcycling.”and”Traffic congestion, increases in fuel prices and so on encourage people into motorcycling. If we are not careful, there is going to be a very large and continuing increase because of that pressure.”a Professor Sheean (presumably on filtering/splitting)”it was believed that one of the impediments to legislation to constrain motorcycle weaving was that it was not being enforced and that perhaps there should be more enforcement.” –Tony Ellis REDNECK ENGEERING SHIFTS WITH R-MAX USA BY ROADMAX TRANSMISSIONS–Redneck Engineering Power Their Choppers with R-Max USA by Roadmax Transmissions and 3″ Open Belt Drives. June 1, 2006 – Ontario, CA – R-Max USA by Roadmax has teamed up with Redneck Engineering to provide their custom motorcycles with high performance 6-speed 1″ extended Main Shaft transmissions and 3″ Open Belt Primary Drives for their left-side drive 300mm wide tire applications. The one inch extension on the R-Max USA by Roadmax transmission, coupled with the 3″ Open Belt Drive, allow the builders at Redneck Engineering to keep the drive components on the left thus keeping the lines of the motorcycle clean on the right. “R-Max USA by Roadmax created this transmission for Redneck Engineering and it allows us to build the bike with less offset on the motor and provide our customer with a ride that is just about as good as right side drive,” stated Mike Marquart, President, Redneck Engineering. “We like to use deep-dish wheels to have the bike make an impact. The R-Max USA by Roadmax transmission allows us to get the most out of our motorcycles.” The transmission assemblies utilize a 2.94:1 1st gear ratio, 2.21:1 2nd gear, 1.60:1 3rd gear, 1.23:1 4th gear, 1.00:1 5th gear, and for six speed applications an .86:1 overdrive gear ratio. Internals consist of SAE8620H precision cut full width gears with increased dog area. Gears are back cut and diamond media blasted for a very smooth and quiet operation. The shift forks are made from heat treated ALBC3 alloy because this gives the forks superior strength. Used in combination with the R-Max USA by Roadmax proprietary shift drum it offers Redneck Engineering’s enthusiasts smooth positive shifting and longer reliability. “We are honored to have Redneck Engineering be a part of our R-Max USA performance group,” explained Jaz Zbiegien, Sales and Marketing Director, R-Max USA by Roadmax. “It’s a thrill to be associated with a firm like Redneck that builds innovative high-performance motorcycles.” BIG DOG MOTORCYCLES FIRST TORNADO RALLY A BLAST, HANG ON FOR NUMBER TWO–Second Rally Set For June 10-11, 2006.Big Dog Motorcycles?, the leader in the high performance, highly-styled cruiser niche and the second largest American V-twin motorcycle manufacturer, was extremely pleased with the success of the company’s first Tornado Rally earlier this year and has set the date for the next Tornado Rally as June 10-11, 2006. Although Big Dog Motorcycles is the presenting sponsor of the Tornado Rally, the event is for all riders, enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a weekend event. “When developing the new annual rally, our ultimate goals were to promote the city – to show the motorcycle community our home – and to thank Wichita for its continued support through the excellent exposure this annual rally could bring,” stated Paul Hansen, Marketing Director, Big Dog Motorcycles. “The first Tornado Rally was phenomenal,” he added. Over 15,000 attended the two-day rally, which took six months to plan. While most people were from Kansas and the surrounding region, other states were also represented, including Alaska, California, and Florida. In fact, one rider rode his Big Dog Motorcycle 1,600 miles from Ft. Lauderdale. Two of the estimated 4,000 bikes that packed parking lots and city streets were the oldest Big Dog Motorcycle at the Rally: a 1995 Vintage Classic, the 16th the company ever built; and the Big Dog Motorcycle with the most miles: a 1995 Pro-Glide, the 18th ever built, with 79,618 miles on its odometer. All brands of motorcycles were represented. The economic impact for the city of Wichita was estimated to hit between $350,000 and $500,000. Many exhibitors and vendors were also pleased and plan on a return trip to Wichita with an even bigger exhibit space. John Archer of Briefly Covered Sportswear commented, “This was such a great event. The layout was good and the staff was especially helpful – two things you look at when you exhibit at an event like this one. We’re definitely coming back next year.” In addition, over 500 people went for a monster truck ride; thousands waited in long lines for the celebrity builders autographs; and the company quickly sold out of the official Tornado Rally t-shirts. “The support from the city government was also excellent. Leaders, police force, fire, and EMS, as well as the Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau and surrounding neighborhoods, all supported our efforts to build this rally,” Hansen added. “With all this support, next year’s Tornado Rally promises to be even better,” he continued. ALL NEW 250 CC CHOPPER–Veterans to the custom bike industry will know the name Johnny Pag, a Master Builder for some 30 years in Southern California, his show winning customs appearing in the leading bike mags. Now he’s about to chalk up a new milestone in the industry. Taking his expertise and designs to China, and working with one of the largest motorcycle/parts manufacturers (suppliers to the Big Four Japanese OEMS) at their 650,000 sq. ft. facility, he’s closely supervised the fabrication and assembly of the Spyder to American quality standards but with a price tag that will make your jaw drop. And we’re not talking a downsized mini-bike, this is a full-scale, full framed motorcycle wrapped up in a package that includes front and rear disc brakes, custom candy paint, forward controls, beefy 1.25 inch handlebars and custom wheels, not to mention a 2-year, unlimited mileage warranty. The Spyder 250 as the name implies features a 250cc twin cylinder, four stroke powerplant that brings the bike, as Johnny says, “comfortably up to speeding ticket speeds.” While not aimed at breaking land speed records, the custom chopper will cruise all day and sips gas at 65 mpg. Specs include a dry weight of 360 lb. and a 73-inch wheelbase, a softail-type suspension with an adjustable seat height of 20-23 inches, chromed alloy rims, 21-inch front and 16-inch rear tires, rated load of 1000lbs., and a 4.2 gallon fuel tank. Colors include candy red, blue, silver and black all with silver flames and an all black model. Watch for a feature on Bikernet in the next couple of days. If you’re at Sturgis, you’ll find Johnny Pag Motorcycles with several Spyders on display at Glencoe Thunder Road. For more information log on to www.johnnypag.com or call 951-352-1300. BIKERNET JIMS TOOL OF THE WEEK–Cam Locking ToolNo. 994 – Use on all2006 to present Dyna Models. This precision tool allows the technician to lock the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets to properly remove, replace, and torque the sprocket bolts. This tool is made from non-marring Delrin. COMIN’ DOWN TO THE WIRE–Someone said there’s 64 days until we pull out for the ride to Sturgis. Holy shit, the sands of time are slipping away. We’re shipping out all our parts for powder next week, then we’re getting serious about building bikes for Sturgis and Bonneville. I spoke to John Reed about the V-Bike and received the final word about on more frame mod that needed to be addressed before I went to paint. I think I’m ready. It’s interesting to witness the V-Bike movement grow around the country. Cycle World Magazine built one. D&D is racing one at speed week. We stumbled into a guy who bought two of them. I’m looking to build a bike that’s big enough for me, has class, is rubbermounted and handles like a Buell. You can see every step in our Bonneville Department. So what’s coming up? This week’s going to be non-stop. I’m hoping for strippers tonight. We have the first Chinese 250 CC chopper designed by a Hamster, two Girls of Bikernet in the wings, one from Hawaii and one from Phoenix. All American Madness Show coverage with Scott Long is coming and more. Hang on. I know I’m forgetting something, goddamnit. Ride Forever, –Bandit

JEFF DECKER RECREATES “RUBY” EXCLUSIVELY FOR KIDS AND CHROME, SPONSORED BY BIKERNET.COM–It isn’t every day that an acclaimed artist volunteers to rework one of his limited edition masterpieces, but Jeff Decker, renowned for his detailed yet uncluttered motorcycle sculptures, will do exactly that.
The original sculpture version of David Uhl’s now famous “Ruby’ was created in 2005 by Decker. Jeff Decker’s reputation left no doubt that the piece would be an essential addition to collectors, however no one could have anticipated that the much sought after sculpture would be sold out before the formal unveiling at the Harley-Davidson winter dealer show.
Jeff Decker will rework “Ruby” for the last time, creating a one-of-a-kind sculpture exclusively for Kids & Chrome. The sculpture will have a unique silver nitrate patina and be mounted on a black, hand rubbed walnut base, and will be auctioned at the Wednesday evening event. “I think what made me feel this was a worthy event was observing the passion of the families with special needs kids, and the amount of effort I saw others putting forth. If the slightest gesture can make these kids a little happier, then it’s an easy thing to do,” states Decker.
Jeff Decker has been creating sculptures for 15 years, focusing on motorcycles specifically for the last 12. His extensive research has allowed him to capture the passion and speed of greats like Rollie Free, prone on his 1948, prone on his 1948 HRD, and Joe Petrali on his record breaking knucklehead. Several of his creations are currently on exhibit in the nations major motorcycle museums, capturing in bronze some of motorcyclings most significant moments in history. Visit his web site

BIKERNET.COM FORUM SET UP TO GIVE READERS IMMEDIATE ACCESS–Just wanted to say Highwayman from Norcal has been a great asset – his recommendations have been right on.
I started on this project because the one sole surviving old school shop in this area couldn’t manage to make my ’63 Panhead right and they were falling further and further behind in time. I’m not negative – we’ve all had our problems to deal with of late. But I figure I could look at this bike on a lift in my home and get more enjoyment out of it than letting it stay in a shop where time stood still.
Now I’ve got this big idea I could tear into it myself and make it right. *cough*
Well, I’ve stripped the motor off the frame, discovered where things weren’t right with the transmission too. Stood with wonderment at the parts involved, gaped in awe at man’s ability to make precision parts out of metal. It’s scary when you’re clueless about what you’re doing, knowing at any moment you could fuck things up forever. What’s worse? Telling friends you failed or admitting to your wife she’s right?
All this to say without your site available, without willing advice from readers and in particular “Highwayman” I wouldn’t have lit my pants on fire, impressed myself with power to split steel gear hubs, or amused myself with the grease under my fingernails. Nor would I have gone this far…
Thanks.

BIKERNET INDEPENDENT NOISE STUDY CRITIQUE–I read it. I like the idea, but I think we need to work on parts of it.
It is far to subjective, due to the lack of control of the measurements. In order to really have some data that can be used I think it would be good to conduct some testing in a controlled arena. The California testing criteria is quite a bit different than anything done in the Bikernet tests. It follows a scientific method so that the results are repeatable and valid. That’s the thing about qualified data, it must always be repeatable. Otherwise it can be suspect. Your testing did a good job of introducing doubt, but failed to supply qualified data.
Did you know that sound pressure (what we actually hear) decreases dramatically with distance? That’s why publishing numbers taken too close to the tail pipe can be harmful, due to the high numbers. Politicians don’t know sound, but they can count. In the California test setup the measurement is taken 50ft behind the bike. By taking the readings right at the pipe as you did the sound pressure is hundreds of times higher. The actual number isn’t much higher looking though. Remember sound has a half power point of 6db. Most other electronics the half power point is 3bd, but sound is 6. It also decays at 6ft.
So each 6 feet from the sound source the reading goes down 6bd, or half. Half the power, half the perceived sound. Perception is the key to sound.
Think of it like this, you have a light and it only makes perfectly straight beams of light. They shine out in all directions equally. If you hold up a sheet of paper and look at the impact marks from the beams of light you can see all the dots. Now back up 6 ft. The beams are still going perfectly straight. The dots are much farther apart. Now switch to sound waves moving out from a sound source. You can easily see that as you move farther away there is much less of the sound hitting your ear.
I really don’t agree with the open pipes thing. They have no place on the street. They annoy people for no good reason other than to do it. They hurt performance in any usable rpm range. They hurt gas mileage and they cause you to pollute for no good reason. All you get is the “biker sound” and you don’t care who is disturbed by it. That’s what being a biker is all about, at least in Hollywood.
Yes louder pipes. Yes the right to modify. But with rights come responsibilities. If you want to do something, learn to do it right. We talk about how freedom isn’t free, but we want it all for nothing. Damn right freedom isn’t free. If you want freedom you have the responsibilities that come with it.
In this case I believe that is a small amount of education. We all fuck up when we are just starting out. That’s what older bikers are still alive for, to educate the prospects. We do a fair job with the etiquette. Now we need to pass on the bike information too. But we need to get it right before we attempt to teach. That means learning, studying, doing that science stuff. It’s not hard, but it has to be done right. That’s the only way to get meaningful data that can be used successfully to win. And we have to be sure that what we think is winning is, and it’s right.
What I mean is that with enough cleaver people and the right legislative opportunities (politician that needs a vote) we can win and get this. Should we? Or should we drop the idea of open pipes and advocate the use of an exhaust that can be proven to work? Are we just trying to be noisy?
–Tim
I agree and disagree with your assumptions. Our testing is very close to the federal governments? requirements regarding distance and angle. I researched California and you’re right for cars. My source could not find an approved distance for motorcycles.
We did not suggest that open pipes were cool or that any of our tests were conclusive, only the premise needs to be considered and studied further. We also addressed responsibilities and made suggestions regarding anti-revving and after-hours abuse.
I agree that further testing needs to be employed in a strict environment, and I always appreciate your comments. I’m hoping motorcyclists all over the country/world can share our initial study with representatives in an effort to show communities the other side of the coin.–Bandit

WHAT MAKES BROS CLUB INSURANCE PROGRAM DIFFERENT– Price is one consideration. The BROS Club Insurance Program can help you choose the right money-saving coverage, with up to 35% in discounts (where applicable). On top of that, the insurance program offers an option others stumble over, the “Agreed Value” endorsement. For riders with custom paint and accessories, this is a valuable point of difference.
Perhaps the most valuable aspect of the BROS Club Insurance Program is the fact that Motorcycles are their specialty. When claims happen, as they sometimes do, ask yourself one question, would you rather have a motorcycle specialist helping you to resolve your claim, or some auto or fire insurance claims adjuster…
By the way, have you heard about the Emergency Roadside Assistance plan offered through BROS Club? The cost is $68.00 for a TWO YEAR membership. ANY motorcycle, ANY year, ANY make or model and this includes bikes with side cars and even trikes. BROS Club’s Motor Club is promoted by many custom bike builders and dealerships across the USA and Canada.

2006 FREEDOM FIGHTERS ANNOUNCED– May 2006 – – The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is proud to announce the 2006 Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame Inductees, Elizabeth “Boots” Buckholz, Rich “Neb” Nebelsick; and “Deacon” Dave Phillips.
The Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame recognizes the commitment and sacrifices individuals across the nation, and world, have made to protect the rights of motorcyclists. In their honor the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame established the nation’s first and only Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame.
Elizabeth “Boots” Buckholz has been the backbone of ABATE of Florida, serving as State Secretary, Legislative Officer and State Office Manager. She has worked tirelessly for over 20 years for the riders in Florida. Boots is passionate about riding and is dedicated to promoting women in motorcycling and their many accomplishments. Her dedication to motorcyclists extends beyond her state and has earned her national recognition.
Rich “Neb” Nebelsick took the last sentence of the Declaration of Independence to heart, “We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, or Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” Neb, often referred to as “just a regular guy,” owned a motorcycle shop and became a freedom fighter in the late 60’s when a rider walked in complaining about the ticket he had just received. The injustice prompted Nebelsick to take on the helmet law in Illinois, investing his money, his time, and eventually mortgaging his business for something he believed in. He took his fight all the way to the Illinois Supreme Court, where the helmet law was found to be unconstitutional. He gave his all for fellow riders and asked nothing in return. “Deacon” David Phillips founded ABATE of California in 1981. He would travel to runs and swap meets in his mobile custom paint shop and talk to his customers and friends about motorcyclist’s rights while working. ABATE meetings were held in his garage in until membership expanded enough to form Local 1. To get the word out he wrote articles on legislation, safety issues and national laws, printing the monthly newsletter on a machine he cranked by hand. He is a single man who believed in letting those ride decide, and through his leadership, hard work and dedication the organization has grown to 51 Locals. ABATE has earned the respect of both the riders and legislators in California, and continues to be a vital organization.
Inductees will be honored at the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Breakfast, Wednesday, 9 August, at the Holiday Inn in Spearfish, South Dakota.Breakfast tickets are available for a $25.00 donation, or reserved tables of eight for $250.00. Traditionally the Breakfast sells out and we recommend that you purchase your tickets well in advance of the event. Tickets can be purchased by phoning the Museum 605.347.2001 or on the Museum’s web page

MARGARITA TIME AT BIKERNET–Helluva weekend coming up. We?re busting ass to finish the fab shit on both Bonneville Bikes. Damn, Chris Kallas has crafted bitchin art for both bikes. Now we gotta build bikes that are up to the art and fast. Watch Bikernet tomorrow. Several features are hanging in our holding pattern waiting to be launched. We have a Peter Linney cool Panhead feature and hot babe. There?s a brake master cylinder theory tech from Wolfgang publications, the lastest wide tire install from Heartland, Coast to Coast legislative news, and mo?.
I said I was going to honor vets in every news section, so here?s a few images from a Veterans Celebration in Florida, by Rogue. These guys got together the funds to build their own Vietnam Memorial wall.
So make sure you slice a few moments out of your weekend to support old vets and young troops providing for the effort in Iraq. Our thoughts are with service folks in every branch, at every U.S. base in the world. We live in strange times.
Perhaps we?ve finally reached the point where we truly understand and respect the word ?Freedom?. Freedom is not exclusive to one race, nationality or political group. That?s what these noise police need to understand. If they want the freedom to live where bikers roam, then they need to respect our freedom and safety needs to make some noise. Can you dig it?

MATT SMITH RACES TO THE FINALS AS G2 MOTORSPORTS MAKES A STATEMENT– The Pontiac Performance Nationals in Columbus was a real statement race for the G2 Motorsports team. Not only did Chip Ellis take the DRAG Specialties/S&S Cycle Buell to both ends of the track record; Matt Smith also took the Torco Race Fuels/Skull Gear bike to its first final round appearance of the season.
“We broke the ice at this race,” said George Smith, President of G2 Motorsports. “Matt made it all the way to the final round and Chip was the number one qualifier and set both ends of the track records. We are all very upbeat about our progress.”
Qualifying
After the four qualifying attempts the G2 Motorsports bikes were qualified in the number one position (Chip Ellis aboard the DRAG Specialties/G2 Motorsports/S&S Cycle Buell – 7.025) and the number three spot (Matt Smith aboard the Torco/Skull Gear/Red Line Oil/G2 Motorsports Buell – 7.059).
Eliminations – Round One
Matt Smith
Matt Smith lined up against former NHRA/POWERade champion Geno Scali to open competition. “I went to the line reminding myself to hold that clutch and not give the race away on the light,” said Matt Smith. “I held it a little longer than I wanted to but I had plenty of horsepower to win the race. Smith ran a 7.065 at 185.95 MPH to defeat Scali’s 7.125 at 186.90 MPH.
Chip Ellis
Chip Ellis was paired off with one of the real graybeards of the class in round one; Paul Gast. The wily veteran took an early lead in the race but Ellis easily ran him down and headed to round two. “I had plenty of power this weekend and my team worked their butts off to make sure of that,” said a happy Chip Ellis. Ellis ran the low elapsed time for the opening stanza with a 7.046 at 183.24 MPH.
Eliminations – Round Two
Matt Smith
In the second round Matt Smith faced off with Michael Phillips and his Suzuki. Neither rider set the world on fire off of the starting line but where it mattered at the finish line Matt Smith again came out on top. Matt ran a 7.146 at 184.88 MPH to Phillips’ 7.189 at 185.43 MPH. This advanced Matt Smith to the semi-final round.
Chip Ellis
Ellis’ competition in the second round came from former NHRA champion, Angelle Sampey. Sampey took a slight lead off of the line but the two bikes were glued together all the way down the track. Unfortunately for Ellis the win light came on in the opposite lane. Sampey ran a 7.084 at 182.47 MPH to Ellis’ 7.092 at 181.94 MPH.
Eliminations – Semi-Finals
Matt Smith
Matt faced off against the factory V-rod of Andrew Hines in the semi-finals and for a change, the racing luck went to the flashy red machine. As the two riders waited for the lights to come down, Andrew Hines got a little antsy and lit the red light handing the win to Smith. Hines ran a 7.128 at 186.56 MPH to Smith’s winning 7.163 at 182.18 MPH.
Eliminations – Finals
Matt Smith
Just prior to the final round the Torco Fuel/Skull Gear crew along with the DRAG Specialties crew survived a mad thrash to change the engine in Matt Smith’s bike. “We found a problem that we knew we couldn’t address prior to the finals so we decided to change the engine,” said George Smith. “We made the change and guessed at the tune-up as we had no data on this engine with our new electronics.”
In the final pairing, Matt Smith left on the former champion but somewhere she found some extra horsepower and took the win. Sampey ran a 7.046 at 188.52 MPH to Smith’s 7.122 at 185.31 MPH.
“We are pretty happy,” said a grinning Matt Smith. “Naturally we would have liked to have the win but we made some great strides and I feel very confident now. I can’t say enough about our whole team. I am so proud of Rick (Maney), Chip (Ellis), Ken (Johnson) and Randal (Welch) for all of the hard work they put in this weekend. I want to thank Evan Knoll and the whole Torco gang for their support. After this race I think everyone knows we are back.”
Post Race Comments
George Bryce, G2 Motorsports Director of Racing said. “I am very proud that our hard work is starting to pay off and I know we are now on the right track. Chip and Matthew did really well and the entire team worked their butts off. The whole team is psyched and we can’t wait for Chicago.”
George Smith added, “We made some good horsepower this weekend. In fact when Chip faced Angelle he had so much power that he drove through the clutch. We were very surprised.”
ELVIS GUITAR PLAYER DEAD–By now many of you, especially those based in Nashville have probably heard abut the tragic death of Elvis guitar player and A-Team Member Billy Walker, his wife Betty and two of his bandmates, Charles Lilly of Hendersonville, TN and Daniel Patton of Hermitage, TN. They were on their way home from a gig in performing at a show near Gulf Shores, when their van went off Interstate 65, near Montgomery and turned over. Josh Brook, Billy’s 21 year old grandson was also critically injured in the accident.
I only had one opportunity to meet Billy which interviewing him for my 13-hour Elvis documentary and he was wonderful to talk to. As most of you know I have been very ill since Halloween and I too have no idea what the future holds for me, so the editing of the film has been put on indefinite hold. You can be sure however that Billy will be well represented. We have lost no fewer than 12 people I interviewed since I stated filming and every one of them comes as a terrible blow.

BIKERS TRY OUT FOR A MEAL TICKET– STRATFORD – Maybe they should call it “Diner Bikers.”Instead it’s just “Diners” and the plot of the prospective television series is simple. It will revolve around five Harley-Davidson enthusiasts riding along their motorcycles through the back roads of Connecticut, New England and possibly the rest of the United States to some of their favorite diners. Along the way they’ll talk, probably have mechanical trouble and eventually sit down to eat with the diner crowd they meet.
“Part of it will be a snapshot of what it’s like to be on the road and going to diners,” said Garrison Leykam, the co-producer. “Then there’s what goes along with it – the enthusiasm, the energy, the spontaneity – there’s nothing like it on TV.”
So on Saturday Leykam, along with co-producer Janet Leslie, Harvey Adelberg of Janet Leslie Productions, and Steve Sattler, an Emmy-award winning cinematographer, spent six hours interviewing and finally choosing their cast during auditions at Bridgeport Harley-Davidson on Research Drive.
Their casting call brought out mothers, engineers, a lounge singer, state cops, outlaw gang members and even Karen Ligammari, a Braille teacher who performed more like a stand-up comic. Others aspirants included Frank Bodnar Jr. who owns four motorcycles and a kitchen “that looks like a diner;” Mark Tiddei who says “riding is the closest thing to flying;” and Kim Carpenter, the assistant to a vice-president of a helicopter manufacturer who said it would be “fun to eat to ride and ride to eat.”
After narrowing the group down to 10, the producers brought in two groups of five to see how they interacted. The groups were asked to plot a trip from anywhere in Connecticut to the Post Road Diner in Norwalk where the pilot.

TRUE-TRACK REPORT FROM EUROPE–Wil Phillips came to the Bikernet Headquarters yesterday and we began to dial in the handling of the 120-inch Panhead. Wait till you see the report in our Bonneville Department. It’s going to be wild. Will sells 20 True-Track systems for touring models a month to Germany. Here’s a report from a customer in England:
Just a quick follow on the True-Track. First, Wil contacted me, concernedthat I had still not received the unit, which I suppose he didn’t get/readthe follow up I had sent you informing that I had received it within hoursof sending my first e-mail. I still appreciate the follow-up call assometimes addresses do get crossed up.
In any case, the True-Track is simply amazing. I am more than impressedwith the difference it made on the handling of the Screaming Eagle RoadGlide with a Baker 6-speed overdrive that I ride at sometimes/frequentlyhigher speeds (i.e. set the cruise at 85 to 90mph on the interstate) . Theworkmanship and the ease of installation are both amazing.
This unit shouldbe installed as a factory recall for all FL Harleys where applicable. Itonly makes sense. There should be something providing stability to the rearof engine/transmission to prevent the rear tire from steering you in thecracks of the road and setting up high speed wobbles which I have named “thewatusee” in long sweeping corners at higher speeds. When asking anyonewith FL Harleys — does your bike do the watusee in the long sweepingcorners? While making a jester with your arms going back and forth and yourbutt going back and forth in a dance like fashion. The only riders that sayno are the ones that stay below the posted speed limit and slow down yetfurther for the corners…. not that there’s anything wrong with that….
Anyone who likes to ride at higher speeds answers “oh yea, sometimes itcan get a little scary until you get use to it.”
I have only ridden about100 miles since I installed the unit but you could feel the difference instability immediately. I am looking forward to putting the True-Track towork on the road trip I am going on tomorrow and will send you a furtherupdate when I return.
Thank you Bandit for the write up on the Web. Thank you John for telling me”you have to get one of these” and of course, Thank you Wil for the unitand the follow up call.

HARDBIKES INVESTS IN SIGNIFICANT ENGINEERING TALENT–Hardbikes is committed to building and developing world-class motorcycles for the American V-Twin marketplace by hiring top line engineering talent like CJ Batten, VP Engineering. CJ’s engineering chops are represented in his achievements in engine design that includes: the Quad 4 for Oldsmobile; Saturn’s first 4 valve engine; Ford SVO 4 valve and 2 valve engines; 4 valve/4 cylinder Mustang engine; and Mercury 2 valve and 4 valve marine engines.
CJ and his team are focused on the development of new designs with an eye to where the competition is now and will be in the future. Current and future regulatory challenges as well as support for marketing and manufacturing will continually impact and shape his program.A recent success by his team provided Hardbikes’ manufacturing department a 16 hour savings in motorcycle wiring. On average hooking up the wiring harness required approximately 20 hours. With a new protocol the time was reduced to four hours and with training it was reduced down to two hours.
“With 40 years of design experience and 30 years of engine design and engine air flow development, Hardbikes has a secret weapon in CJ Batton that will improve quality, functionality and design in all aspects of the motorcycle,” stated Bob Kay, VP Sales and Marketing. “In his previous position at MerCruiser, his patented product innovations may lead the firm to over $100 million in bottom line performance. His knowledge and business savvy will impact all aspects of the firm.”
CJ is implementing a Total Quality Management program with a focus on incremental improvements. This will allow the motorcycles to be consistently improved over time. One example of this initiative is the clevis footpeg. They are specifically design so that owners, when moving their bike, won’t get wacked on the shins.

CALIFORNIA CARB EMISSIONS REPORT FROM REPRESENTATIVE ROBER CUTHBERTSON– Currently California has a limit of measurable NO2 levels of 0.25 ppm(parts per million) over a 1 hour time limit. The federal limit is 0.053 ppmover an annual average. California has no annual average requirements atthis time.
ARB and OEHHA has recommended that California adopt the new legal levelsto be 0.18 ppm over a 1 hour time and 0.030 ppm annual average.
According to the presenters, California’s NO2 levels have been decliningover the last 10 years. In fact, in 2005 California’s NO2 levels were justbelow the new recommendations. So, if this recommendation was passed today,Californians would not notice anything different in the air we breathe orthe vehicles currently available to us.
The problem lies that ARB and OEHHA only set the limits and have nothingto do with how those limits are achieved or enforced. This is what couldpossibly affect us as motorcyclists in the future. We have all seenCalifornia’s air pollution laws migrate east, so this has the potential toinfluence the ARB’s in your state.
I urge you to go to the following website http://www.arb.ca.gov/research/aaqs/no2-rs/no2-rs.htm and use this chance for public comment. You have until May 31st. Inmid-June the AQAC will meet to discuss this issue with a new report thatreflects public comments. We will have one more chance in July to voicemore public comments before this is voted on by the board.
If anyone would like more info on this, feel free to contact me and I willpass on what I know.

BIKER INVESTIGATES BIKERNET BAR LISTINGS–Dukes Road House, Addison Is your first listing. They are no longer Biker Friendly…I am a local and they ask you to remove all biker attire (Dew rags, Colors, leather vests).
My understanding is that they do not was to scare the normal people on the weekends. It might be worth a call to Dukes to confirm what I am saying so that they could be removed from the list

STEALTH BIKERNET AGENT INVESTIGATES STEALTH BIKE WORKS IN NC–I am getting ready for my ride to the Wall in Washington D.C. I realy enjoy this ride every year. I take the time to relax on the road and to think. I am leaving STEALTH BIKE WORKS in good hands, Max and Chopper John will over see things while I am gone and “THE MEANEST” will over see them!
One thing that amazes me is the effort “The Motor Company” spends trying to make people buy their exhaust systems. I read where they polled their dealers and that one-fourth of the dealers are experiencing negative community sentiment concerning noise. I wonder if these same people surveyed are concerned about loud music and loud 18 wheelers? I doubt it! What a lot of people don’t realize is who is behind all these noise regulations, yeah, the good old Motor Company.
They really don’t care what pipes you run as long as their name is stamped on them. The next time you are at a rally look and see what brand of pipes everyone is running. You will see Vance&Hines Samson, Bassani etc. Very few H-D brand pipes. Why? Because all the aftermarket pipes out perform and out style their pipes.
Maybe they should quit trying to legislate the aftermarket exhaust makers and custom bike shops out of business and build a better exhaust system that would compete with the aftermarket pipes! Greed is at the center of this issue as with most issues. The next time you purchase an exhaust system think about who is backing the E.P.A., not the aftermarket guys!
Now having got that off my chest I feel better. All of us here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS would like to wish all of you a great Memorial day weekend. Take time to think about what Memorial Day really means. Take time to think about the sacrifices made for the freedom we enjoy and take time to remember the ones still fighting today for that freedom.
With all the problems we face daily, this is still the greatest country in the world!
Until next time, RIDE!

ATTENTION OHIO BIKERS–The You’ll recall that last month the OCB rejected a request for transfer of $750,000 from the Motorcycle Safety and Education Fund for other purposes. This $600,000 additional appropriation for fiscal year 2007 (July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007) will help Motorcycle Ohio provide additional training classes, sponsor sites, and purchase replacement motorcycles for its aging fleet. The motorcycling community, members of the OCB, and many state representatives and senators have clearly demonstrated their support for motorcycle safety and awareness in Ohio. Let’s continue to support Motorcycle Ohio’s efforts by monitoring its training and awareness activities to ensure all Ohioans have access to its life-saving programs. ARTISTS’ VILLAGE AT HORSE SMOKE OUT–One of the things I really like about the HORSE Backstreet Choppers Magazine Smoke Out is the village of artists behind the event. The event is about the builders, which is its own medium but then there are the bands, the writers, the photographers, and the graphic artist. Through the years we have worked with legends like Jon Towle and Frank Kozik which was a thrill for me because I have admired their work for a long time. In the future I want to talk about Johnny Crap and Tick, who have done the posters for this year but I just got the T-shirt design this week and I want to talk about that. The T-shirt design for this year’s Smoke Out VII just rocks. I am going to get about five and have a wardrobe for the year. The artist behind it is Jeral Tidwell. His website is really worth checking out http://www.humantree.com. He has even done some awesome skateboards decks for Reliance Skateboards. Jeral is a heavy hitter and has done work for Kid Rock, Dick Dale, Widespread Panic, Sheryl Crow and many more but I was really surprised looking at the poster section on the website. Jeral had done a poster for the Reverend Horton Heat who played the Smoke Out last year. He had a poster for Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers who are playing Smoke Out VII in Salisbury this June and he had a poster for the SuperSuckers who are playing Smoke Out West in Cottonwood in October. Overlap with the The HORSE BC, Smoke Out bands should not have surprised me though. The artist, the bands, skateboards, surfboards, The HORSE BC Magazine, choppers, bobbers, hot rods and the Smoke Out are all gears in a small but cool underground counter-culture that I am just happy to be involved in, in whatever small way that fate allows. –Edge EASILY GO 300MM WIDE ON A SOFTAIL WITH THE BAKER 300!–Since it full production release in last fall, the BAKER 300 Wide Tire Kit has maintained as the easiest and most-refined route to transforming a stock Harley-Davidson Softail rear-end to handle a 280mm or 300mm tire. BAKER observed that the primary issue when customizing the entire back-half of a motorcycle to handle the ultra-wide tires was the actual ease of the project as a whole. To do it right it can be quite an undertaking. A frustrating amount of time consumption via trial-and-error, shopping for compatible components, and excessive guesswork lends itself to many projects being incomplete or completed poorly. The engineering behind many projects left room for improvement. With the major modification of such conversions being around the drivetrain, BAKER saw the opportunity to apply its expertise in engineering and remedy the issues with going wide. The BAKER 300 offers is everything needed to complete such a project in about a day: The exclusive BAKER RIGHT-SIDE-DRIVE DIRECT DRIVE 6-SPEED COMPLETE TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY is only available with this kit and nowhere else. Not only does this solution eliminate the need to take the time to dissect the messy transmission guts to install a longer main shaft like most kits, but it is a transmission system upgrade from stock! The BAKER Right-Side-Drive solution keeps the motorcycle balanced and operates in a smoother, quieter, more-efficient fashion. A complete Harley-Davidson-style, powder-coated swingarm assembly that includes the axle, axle spacers for 280mm or 300mm wheels, subframe, and splashguard. A heavy 13-guage, paint-ready fender. Also available in H-D paint colors upon request (color number, photo, and deposit required). All the necessary hardware and fasteners to easily complete the project is included. A 28-page comprehensive instructions manual, complete with photos, is included as backup. BAKER’s renowned toll free tech support is available as additional backup. As you can see, the BAKER 300 Wide Tire Kit is all-inclusive and fully supported. Aggravation or failure will be difficult. Because BAKER has no way to presume which wheels you will apply, wheels are not provided. The BAKER 300 Wide Tire Kit spacing and centering is designed for Xtreme Machine or Performance Machine wheels. If you apply wheels from other manufacturers, additional centering and spacing is necessary for fitment. The BAKER 300 Wide Tire Kit is a quick, complete, and quality solution to the popular Softail modification for a wider tire. THE BOLT-ON KIT IS PERFECT FOR DEALERS THAT DON’T HAVE TIME FOR MAJOR HACKING AND CHOPPING TO GET TO THE GOAL. THERE IS NO MAJOR AMPUTATION NEEDED WITH THIS KIT. Note: There are minor, subjective and cosmetic ancillary purchases needed for completion, like a license plate bracket. For additional details, go online to http://www.bakerdrivetrain.com/dialup/baker300/index.html, see page 27 of the BAKER 2006 catalog, or call 1-877-640-2004.
