Hey,
It’s that time. The clock has run out. It’s time to pull out for the Badlands. We’re rolling on Saturday out to the Daytec plant smack in the center of the California desert, then to the Billet Bar in Phoenix, and then up to Sedona. This is the first year I’ve planned and built a bike, but couldn’t ride it. It ain’t complete. Still waiting on paint and the engine.
That’s cool. A brother Hamster flew out from Cape code and we’re riding Road Kings to Sturgis. We’ll be testing a new 2007 96-inch Road King with a 6-speed against my slightly modified 2003 King with highbars. Get this, the 2007 King has a radio and XM satellite radio connection for constant entertainment. One King is lowered and the other has a windshield. One has been to Sturgis, last year, the other is a virgin. One has the ultimate touring pegs, the other has crashbars. We’ll bring you the complete saga on Bikernet, the ride, the bikes, the comparison, the women and Sturgis. Sinwu bought me a new pocket Casio digital camera and I have a 500 shot budget.
Let’s hit the news, we need to pack:
EUROPEAN PHOTOGRAPHERS SHOOTING FOR BIKERNET IN STURGIS– I will email you some shots that nobody in the US has ever seen. There’s this yearly event in a little town in Holland called The Black Cross (“De Zwarte Cross” in Dutch), and I was there this weekend. It’s basically 50,000 people gathering for three days for music, lots of beer, amusement park rides, lots of live rock music, and the most crazy motorcross you can imagine.
The only rule is: wear a helmet. I truly believe Holland is the only place in the world where the authorities would allow something like this.

STURGIS CALL FOR CUSTOMS FOR THE METZELER 4TH ANNUAL BIKE SHOW NOW AT THUNDER ROAD–A bigger, wilder, hotter Metzeler 4th Annual Sturgis V-Twin Custom Bike Contest is scheduled for Tuesday, August 8, 2006, in that famous cycling city edging the Black Hills of South Dakota.
New for 2006, Metzeler’s Sturgis V-Twin Custom Bike Contest is now at Thunder Road on Route 34 – the main drag through Sturgis – located 3 miles east of downtown. This new location, in the heart of the custom cruising action, will make travel easier for entrants and spectators, giving more exposure for the builders showing their bikes.
The theme for the 2006 Metzeler 4th Annual Sturgis V-Twin Custom Bike Contest is “Roll Big at Thunder Road”, celebrating Metzeler’s leading role in the muscle-tire trend, now blown to new proportions with the radical, 21-inch, low-profile rear.
The V-Twin Custom Bike Contest will have multiple classes for both amateur and semi-pro builders, plus the popular People’s Choice Award, allowing every visitor at the show the chance to cast a vote that counts.
Judging will be by a list of qualified industry insiders from V-twin magazine editors, to artists, to custom-cruiser trend setters like pro-builder Eddie Trotta of Thunder Cycle Design. Trotta has already committed to being an honored guest at Metzeler’s 4th Annual Sturgis V-Twin Custom Bike Contest. There also promises to be a wide field of media attending the event, continuing the contest’s trend of high-profile print and television exposure. Once again the contest will be hosted by the nearly famous Metzeler girls, who will treat cruiser riders with special gifts from free random Prize Drawings.
Old Skool, New School, All(s)Kool. Also on show at Thunder Road is photographer Michael Lichter’s 6th annual exhibition of motorcycles in/as art. The machines on display for 2006 were built by 22 of the top custom bike builders from across America, each exploring the themes of “old skool, new school.” Don’t be a dropout, be there.
In addition to piles of cool trophies for the top placers in each class, the winner of the popular-vote Best in Show will be featured in 2007 Metzeler Tires advertising. Very cool.
For contest details, rules and registration, visit www.us.metzelermoto.com.
BLONDE COOKBOOK–
MONDAY:It’s fun to cook for Tom. Today I made angel foodcake. The recipe said beat 12 eggs separately. The neighbors were nice enough to loan me some extra bowls.
TUESDAY:Tom wanted fruit salad for supper. The recipe said serve without dressing. So I didn’t dress. What a surprise when Tom brought a friend home for supper.
WEDNESDAY:A good day for rice. The recipe said wash thoroughly before steaming the rice. It seemed kind of silly but I took a bath anyway. I can’t say it improved the rice any.
THURSDAY:Today Tom asked for salad again. I tried a new recipe. It said prepare ingredients, then toss on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving. Tom asked me why I was rolling around in the garden.
FRIDAY:I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said put the ingredients in bowl and beat it. There must have been something wrong with this Recipe. When I got back, everything was the same as when I left.
SATURDAY:Tom did the shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday (oh boy) For some reason Tom keeps counting to ten.
SUNDAY:Tom’s folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast but all I had was hamburger Suddenly I had a flash of genius. I put the hamburger in the oven and set the controls for roast. It still came out hamburger, much to my disappointment.
GOOD NIGHT DEAR DIARY. This has been a very exciting week. I am eager for tomorrow to come so I can try out a new recipe on Tom. If I can talk Tom into buying a bigger oven, I would like to surprise him with Chocolate Moose.

SMOKE OUT WEST SET TO HIT THE ROAD WITH A BANG– What is the one motorcycle event that hardcore chopper people have made a can’t-miss for the past seven years? Everyone knows it’s The Horse Smoke Out, held each June in Salisbury, North Carolina. The seventh version of that star-studded event recently concluded and it was bigger and better than ever. Chopper luminaries like Billy Lane, Kendall Johnson, Indian Larry Legacy, Hank Young and many more have made The Horse Smoke Out their destination for years.
The Horse Back Street Choppers Magazine has been hearing from their readers for a long time that there needed to be a Smoke Out type of event out west. That is set to happen this fall.
Cottonwood, Arizona, will be home to The Horse Smoke Out West, Sponsored by Bikernet.com, this October 6 & 7. Smoke Out West promises to be as much fun and just as intense as the original Horse Smoke Out. To assure that happens, the Supersuckers and Devil Doll have been signed as headline musical entertainment.
The Horse Smoke Out West hits the ground running with a top-talent Chopper Build Off, too. Four top builders are building their bikes right now. Those include Cole Foster of Salinas Boys Customs, Scott Webster of Leroy Thompson Choppers, Keino and Paul Cox of Indian Larry Legacy, and Scott Craig of Chopperville Custom Cycles. These guys all have killer bikes in the works and the winner will be chosen by spectator ballot.
In addition to the Chop-Off and the great rock & roll, there will also be a participants’ Old School Chopper Show. The one in Salisbury had over 200 entrants. Look for the same participation in Cottonwood. Major vendors and bike shops have already signed up to exhibit and sell their wares.
Plan your fall vacation now around The Horse Smoke Out West. Hotel rooms and camping are available. Get all the details on Smoke Out West at www.horsebackstreetchoppers.com. See ya there!

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE COMPANY ANNOUNCES A NEW HOME– Kings Mountain, NC (July 20, 2006) – Indian Motorcycle Company is pleased to announce that it will be revving up its engine in a new home. After carefully reviewing location options throughout the United States, Indian has selected a factory in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, where it will place its world headquarters. The site, located in Cleveland County, 37 miles west of downtown Charlotte, includes 11 acres of property and a 40,000 square foot manufacturing facility which is expandable to 125,000 square feet.
“We believe Cleveland County and the greater Charlotte area are a perfect fit for Indian Motorcycle Company and we’re proud to call this area home,” said Indian Chairman, Stephen Julius. “We are in the heart of our nation’s powersports industry, with access to design, engineering and mechanical talent, world-class suppliers, motorsport education centers and year-round motorcycle riding weather. In addition, this area provides us with economic advantages, including a low overall cost of doing business, which was aided by a strong incentive package provided by Cleveland County and by the State of North Carolina.”
The announcement of the factory site marks the official re-launch of Indian Motorcycle Company, America’s oldest and most iconic motorcycle brand, founded in 1901. In preparation for Indian’s re-launch, management has spent considerable time over the last two years researching the American motorcycle market and learning from the successes and failures of other market entrants. In particular, Indian has studied the tremendous growth of Harley-Davidson from near-bankruptcy in the early 1980’s to a multi-billion dollar success story today. However, Indian is intent on slowly carving out its own niche in the large and growing heavyweight cruiser motorcycle market.
There is a considerable consumer base for a premium line of motorcycles under the Indian Motorcycle brand, which has an almost cult-like status amongst many consumers. The company will focus on supplying genuine, American made, motorcycles which are beautifully designed, made of the highest quality materials, reliable and supported by a qualified dealer network.
Over the next 12 months, Indian will focus on design, engineering and testing activities, with the objective of introducing the famed Indian? Chief motorcycle in the second half of 2007. To head up its product development team, Indian has hired Geoffrey Burgess, a world-renowned motorcycle engineer and product development expert. Geoff was most recently the Chief Technology Officer at Global Motorsports Group (“GMG”), owner of Custom Chrome, a provider of parts and accessories to the American V-twin motorcycle market. Prior to GMG, Geoff was head of product development at S&S Cycle, Inc., a leading V-twin engine manufacturing company, where he drove product innovation and process improvement to new levels.
Prior to joining S&S, Geoff was the first employee and Chief Engineer at the Victory Motorcycle division of Polaris Industries, Inc., in Roseau, Minnesota. Geoff has also served in various senior engineering capacities at General Motors, Bombardier Recreational Products (Valcourt, Quebec), BSA-Triumph Motorcycles and Norton-Villiers Motorcycle Group. “Having Geoff on our team is a big win for Indian®,” commented Indian President, David Wright. “His breadth and depth of knowledge of the American motorcycle market is impressive and his technical capabilities unsurpassed. He has outstanding powertrain and chassis design and development experience which we will put to good use. He is the perfect person for this role.”
Indian is presently seeking to expand its team of engine and chassis engineers, technicians and CAD designers. “Our team will focus on design, quality, craftsmanship and service,” commented Mr. Wright. “Indian remains among the most powerful brands in the U.S. motorcycle market, and our team is committed to re-building the extraordinary legend of Indian?.” In the first half of 2007, Indian? will begin the process of developing a small but highly qualified network of motorcycle dealers who understand and appreciate the heritage of Indian? and recognize the growth potential of this opportunity.
The controlling shareholder of Indian Motorcycle Company is London based Stellican Limited which has an impressive track record of resurrecting classic brands, including, most recently, the successful re-launch of Chris-Craft? boats, which was founded in 1874 and is among the oldest boat brands in the United States. “We will apply the same practical and long-term approach to Indian as we have employed successfully at Chris-Craft”, commented Stephen Julius, Chairman of both Indian Motorcycle and Chris-Craft. “We are confident we will repeat our success with Indian? by remaining true to the rich heritage of this incredible brand and doing things slowly and thoroughly. We are certain that there is an important role for Indian? in the future of the American motorcycle market” added Mr. Julius.

AMA NEWS, The National Transportation Safety Board– will hold a two-day public forum on motorcycle safety beginning on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 in Washington, DC. Board Member Debbie Hersman will preside as Chair of the forum.
Last year, 4,315 motorcyclists died in crashes and the rate of motorcycle fatalities has increased more than 25 percent since 1997. “At a time when highway fatalities have been decreasing, motorcycle fatalities have continued to increase, both in overall number and in fatality rate,” said Member Hersman.
The goal of the public forum is to gather information about ongoing motorcycle safety research and initiatives, as well as safety countermeasures that may reduce the likelihood of motorcycle accidents and fatalities.”
During the forum, the NTSB will examine issues raised by a number of recent motorcycle accidents, including the June 12 motorcycle crash involving Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and the June 11 crash involving a motorcycle and a minivan in Williamsport, PA that killed five persons.
NTSB staff will lead technical panel discussions that will examine each major aspect of motorcycle safety, including rider training and licensing, rider protective equipment, vehicle design, and public education of motorists and motorcyclists. Representatives from the motorcycle industry, government, and motorcycling organizations will be invited to give presentations highlighting their perspectives.
The forum will be held in Washington at the NTSB’s Board Room and Conference Center, 429 L’Enfant Plaza, SW. An agenda for the forum will be posted on the NTSB’s website when available. The general public will be able to observe the forum either in person or by webcast at www.ntsb.gov.
VERMONT SHERIFF BUSTED–A Vermont sheriff whose officers improperly shut down a dual-sport ride nearly two years ago is back in the news and out of office.
Windham County Sheriff Sheila Prue pleaded guilty to embezzlement in court and submitted her resignation on June 23. The charges were unrelated to the events of August 8, 2004, when Prue’s deputies threatened to arrest riders in the Red Fox Turkey Run.
In that incident, deputies told riders they would be arrested and their motorcycles confiscated, even if they rode fully licensed street-legal motorcycles on public roads.
The decision to halt the dual-sport ride became a big controversy among New England riders. An investigation by the Vermont State Attorney General concluded that sheriff’s deputies were wrong to stop the event.
PHILLIPPINE ROADS SHUT DOWN TO MOTORCYCLISTS– The Philippines Supreme Court (SC) has ordered motorcycles of all types and sizes to keep off the North and South Luzon expressways after it affirmed the validity of an administrative order of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) prohibiting motorcycles from using the expressways. These expressways are the major corridors for travel through the largest of the Philippine Islands.
NEW YORK STATES MAKES AN EFFORT FOR AWARENESS– New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has completed a new 30-second TV public service announcement on motorcycle awareness.
Newly appointed New York DMV Commissioner Nancy Naples appears on the sidewalk after a graphic car/motorcycle right of way violation, telling viewers, “Motorcycle accidents aren’t accidents at all, too many are crashes caused by inattentive drivers who just pull into oncoming traffic with little more than a glance. I’m DMV Commissioner Nancy Naples, asking you to please watch for motorcycles.”
Assistant Commissioner for Transportation Safety Rob Dingman spearheaded the video. Dingman’s name may be familiar to many readers of AMA Rights News & Notes because he is the former AMA Washington Representative.
In addition, Governor Pataki is now considering A4914 which passed both houses of the legislature and is awaiting his signature. This legislation is consistent with the AMA Justice for All Campaign which is focused on inadequate sentencing of drivers who seriously injure or kill others on the road. CONTROVERSIAL PARTS BY JESSE JAMES–OK, I just went over and asked. Pete (HAMC Dago) the owner of Dummonts, in El Cajon, has the trademark on FTW Inc. That’s his corporate name. WCC should have done a little research before using the name. Pete has it and I think at the least Jessie should contact him and ask to use the name. I don’t know what Pete would say, but just starting up production is a bad idea.
Sorry it took so long.

ISR BAR CONTROLS ON THE SALT SHAKER–For several years now Gard and LACC have used ISR components and brakes exclusively on all their custom builds. The combination of simple design and unbeatable performance were the attraction and that led to the appointment of LA County Choprods as the exclusive distributor for North and South America as well as Canada. The parts are available through LACC and their web site. http://www.lachoprods.com/
They are bitchin, and we’ll post shots of a series of ISR components over the next couple of months. In the meantime I’m bleeding my brakes.
I’M BURNIN’ DAYLIGHT–I need to finish some wiring tonight. We installed Dyna rear axle adjusters and with the True Track components, handling will be tight.
Couple more things tonight and I’ll be ready for the Accurate 120 engine, Jim Murillo paint and I can start the Eddie Trotta break-in routine. I’m itchin’, scratchin’ and waiting for the lovely Sin Wu to code a bunch of Bonneville Update images so I can write you an update with all the build details. I’ll mention an important detail about Accurate Engines. Unlike most engine manufacturers, when you receive an Accurate powerhouse, it’s ready to rock with the carb, the ignition system (with coils), and the charging system. “At one time I sent top motormounts,” Berry Wardlaw said, “but I stopped. I was damned if I did ’cause they didn’t fit, or damned if I didn’t, so I don’t.” That’s cool to receive a mill that’s ready to hook a gas line to, install the pipes, run a hot wire to and roll down the driveway. Incredible.
Somebody else bug her. I’m dried up. Okay, I’m going to hit the iron pile, shower and jump back into the garage.
Ride Forever,

BIKERNET MEDICAL FILES–Two patients limp into two different American Medical clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement. The first patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week. The second sees the family doctor after waiting a week for an appointment, then waits eighteen weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn’t reviewed for another month and finally has his surgery scheduled for 6 months from then.
Why the different treatment for the two patients?
The first is a Golden Retriever…..
The second is a Senior Citizen

SCHWARZENEGGER FINALLY GETS A MOTORCYCLE LICENSE– The Governator has finally gotten a motorcycle license after riding his Harley-Davidsons for years in movies and off without one.
Nearly six months after he crashed one of his Harleys into an S.U.V. pulling out of a driveway while riding near his Los Angeles home with his 12-year-old son in a sidecar, the California governor has taken and passed both a written and a riding test and got the required permit. The governor, who needed 15 stitches on his upper lip, said at the time that he had not bothered to get the proper license because he had “never thought about it.”
The Los Angeles Police Department did not issue any citations in the accident because department officials said no police officer saw what had happened. Officials at the Department of Motor Vehicles also cleared the governor of any violation, noting that because of the sidecar he was not technically riding on two wheels.
STAR WARS MEETS T-3– Remote speed control technology, as recently featured in the Terminator 3 movie, is coming next year to London. Using satellite positioning in conjunction with on-board electronics would ensure total compliance with speed limits and would reduce injury accidents by 20%, according to a report issued by the Institute of Transport Studies at Leeds University.
A trial will be undertaken in 2007 with up to 20 vehicles. The Leeds study suggests that the system could be introduced initially on taxis, buses and Greater London Authority vehicles. Private motorists could be offered concessions such as lower insurance premiums to fit the technology.

JANKLOW LAWSUIT–I hope they will be more successful with this. Janklow has made a mockery of the court system, had special treatment in jail and is getting his law license back.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The family of a motorcyclist killed when former Rep. Bill Janklow ran a stop sign has filed a new $25 million wrongful death suit against the U.S. government.
Ronald Meshbesher, attorney for Randy Scott’s family, said he filed the federal civil suit Friday in Minneapolis after getting no response from the U.S. House of Representatives on a similar claim filed in 2004.
“It’s a clear-cut case that Janklow was responsible,” Meshbesher said. “The only issue, as I can see it, is the amount the family will get.”
A spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney in Minnesota said the office would not comment. Janklow’s lawyer did not return a phone call Monday.
Scott’s family initially sued Janklow in Minnesota state court. But it was determined that since Janklow was on official business, he was protected from any monetary claims by the Federal Tort Claims Act. The law safeguards on-duty federal employees from negligence claims.
The case was then moved to federal court. But the family’s initial claim against the U.S. House went nowhere.
Janklow, 66, resigned from Congress after being convicted in South Dakota of second-degree manslaughter and other charges stemming from Scott’s death.
The 2003 crash ended Janklow’s political career. He had dominated South Dakota politics for three decades, first as attorney general, then as governor and finally as the state’s only member of the U.S. House.

WEIRD NEWS: A BRIGHT IDEA FROM YAMAHA– Yamaha has developed a process for making its bikes glow in the dark. A phosphorescent polymer film, developed by Yamaha of Japan, absorbs sunlight and then releases the energy at night as a soft glow.
In phosphorescent materials, incoming UV light excites electrons to a state that they depart from very slowly, emitting visible light as they do so over many hours.
Yamaha has developed a vacuum pressure process that sticks a thin even layer of phosphorescent plastic film to irregularly shaped fenders, engine covers and cowlings.

HELMET LAW REINTRODUCED IN PENNSYLVANIA– In response to a spike in motorcycle fatalities following repeal of the state helmet law three years ago, a bill to reinstate a mandatory helmet law has been introduced in Pennsylvania.
Motorcycle deaths and injuries are up significantly since 2003, but so is the number of motorcyclists on the highways. These coincidental trends have led authors of a new legislative study to shy away from making definitive conclusions on whether the helmet law repeal itself is responsible for the increase in fatal accidents.
The study on motorcycle accidents by the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee results from a mandate in the 2003 law. Another report is due in 2008. The committee’s report says that both fatalities and serious injuries involving motorcyclists increased one-third during 2004 and 2005 in Pennsylvania.
But the report notes that motorcycle registrations in Pennsylvania jumped to 318,000 from 267,000, a 19 percent increase, during the same period.
The report states: “261 persons died in motorcycle crashes in the two years prior to 2003, compared to 362 persons in the first two years after repeal, an increase of 38.7 percent.
“However, when the number of registered motorcycles is taken into consideration, the average annual fatality rate after repeal of the Helmet Law (5.9 fatalities per 10,000 registered motorcycles in 2004 and 2005) was not substantially higher than the pre-repeal (2001 and 2002) average annual fatality rate of 5.4 fatalities per 10,000 registered motorcycles.”
The report also focuses on serious head injuries resulting from motorcycle accidents, but found that analytical data doesn’t exist to specifically link helmet use with head trauma injuries.
It’s hard to draw any conclusions about what’s really going on from the legislative report, said Charles Umbenhauer, lobbyist for ABATE of Pennsylvania.
But two Keystone lawmakers, Reps. David Frankel, D-Allegheny, and Tony Melio, D-Bucks, have drawn their own conclusions and recently sponsored bills to restore the helmet requirement for adults.

SASHA AND HER NEW FRIEND, WES–This is my new boy-toy for the road. My little 1%erwho watches my back. Every gal needs a boy like thiswhile she prowls the highways happy and sweet, avagabond gypZ exploring unique experiences on thejourney.
Well, I’ve started my new book “Chrome Cowgirl” whichis also my alter-ego anime character. She’s the sideof me that has that wild-west pioneering spirit.Which is why *she* likes having *Wes* around.
Oh, Wes lives in one of the saddle bags and hisoff-spring sized bullets are something I keep handy.More, he’s just a scary, polished dude. All buff. Nopuff.
I hit the road for Sturgis in a week. I’m supposed tobe there now, but I’m in the recording studiorecording my debut album here in Nashville. Yes,truly this is a record that will turn up the noisefactor in this sweet country town. A city girlascends with some alternative ghettoTech Southernrock. Watch out.
At Sturgis, you’ll find me at the Broken Spoke Saloonwhere I work as a Jill-of-All-Trades and a master atit all because you just have to be the best to work atthe B’Spoke! 18 hour days are the norm there but it’sfun because it’s family.
When I return from Sturgis, I begin my apprenticeshipwith a fine motorcycle builder here in Nashville. Why? Because I’ve lived in NYC most of my adult lifeso far and didn’t have a garage. When I was a kid, Iwould love to hang with my dad who is a gearhead andlearn stuff. I’m intoxicated and erotified by thescent and feel of grease. I love the idea of my handsgrasping bare metal and creating something. (That RonFinch just rocks my arts & crafts wow out of the park! He’s a master craftsman.)
So now, I’ll do my apprenticeship and maybe somedaycreate a really, groovy ride from the knowledge Iacquire working with Raullo the builder.
My history? I come from a family of gearheads andmetal masters and arts & crafts junkies…so we’ll seeif there’s any of that high pulse in my ripped upGENES. If not, well there’s plenty to do in amotorcycle shop anyway…
There’s just not enough hours in the day for a littleartsy fartsy chick who surely does not like to fartaround with nothing to do.
Wes, is that you calling, dear?
Well, off I go to feed *Wes*. See ya on the road.

FORMER COLORADO RESIDENT HINES SCORES FIRST NHRA VICTORY OF THE SEASON FOR SCREAMIN’ EAGLE V-ROD TEAM–DENVER (July 17, 2006) – They’ve been working toward this since last summer. The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team earned a victory Sunday during the 27th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. It wasn’t just any win, it was the win the team has been waiting for. Andrew Hines rode his V-Rod entry to the win over Matt Guidera – the first win for Hines since the August event in Memphis last season.
“It was a complete team effort,” Hines said. “We worked so well in the hot conditions that we faced here this weekend and we tuned the bike correctly from the first hit (Sunday). My dad and brother stared at the computer nonstop through qualifying, trying to figure out what it would take to make this bike go fast. It worked.”
It was the sixth career victory in 13 final round appearances for Hines. Not only did Hines earn the win, but he also jumped back into the points lead. It’s the first time the two-time defending NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle has held the top spot in the point standings this season.
“It feels so good to have the first win of the season over and done with,” Hines said. “I’ve had a longer winless streak before, and that was tough on everyone. We still have a lot of races left this season so this is a great time to get a victory in and gain some momentum.”
Hines beat Karen Stoffer and the Geico Suzuki team in the opening round of eliminations. Hines posted a 7.430-second pass at 180.36 mph over Stoffer’s 7.533 at 178.59. Hines then went on to beat Chip Ellis in Round Two. Hines went 7.419 at 180.74 to top Ellis’ 9.087 at 100.27 on the G Squared S&S Buell.
Hines earned a trip to the final round for the third time this season with a semifinal round win over Geno Scali. Hines turned in a 7.424 at 180.74 over Scali’s 7.465 at 179.71 on his Performance Machine Suzuki. Hines beat Guidera and the Rocklin Motorsports/Rocklin Harley-Davidson team in the first final round meeting between the two riders. Hines used a 7.435 at 179.97 to grab the win over Guidera’s 7.566 at 176.63.
“The V-Rod was so consistent I had a great time riding it,” Hines said. “The bike performed so well I didn’t have to make a single correction. We earned four win lights in one day for the first time this season and it’s even better because the V-Rod was just awesome to ride.
“Beating Chip Ellis was almost like winning the race itself. He had been running in the 7.30s all weekend and it was great to get past him that round. This is going to be a great upswing weekend for this team.”
Hines was in second place of the standings before the weekend started, 28 points behind Angelle Sampey and the U.S. Army team. Hines now has a 28-point lead because of the win combined with a second round loss for Sampey.
Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said the team couldn’t ask for better results from one weekend.
CALIFORNIA HELMET LAW FOUND UNCONSTITUTIONAL ONCE MORE–Quig won in Superior Court again on July 14, 2006. What he did in a nutshell is get the judge (Honorable Michael Barton) to dismiss nine of his helmet tickets as unconstitutional. He then had the judge hold the tenth ticket over for trial, keeping the judge, who actually understands this stuff, involved in the issue.
Now, he also got the judge to agree that the presiding judge (who distributes traffic citations to various judges) should direct any and all helmet violation tickets to judge Barton and the judge agreed that it was in the interest of the court to do so and he thought the presiding judge would have no problem doing that. Quig also suggested that judge Barton then summarily dismiss any of those tickets that might come before him as unconstitutional. The judge wanted to do one thing at a time, and set trial date for Quigs last ticket (actually there are two more tickets) for August 25, 2006. He also put the AG and the DA on notice, so they could not come back and say any trial or ruling was void because they weren’t informed.
The groundwork is set, and the players are getting into uniform. Can’t wait for game day.
By the way, if you go to www.usff.com/print, you can find the transcript for the July 14th hearing and ruling. Hey Kit, Quig continually referred to the DA’s office as weasels. That was the derogatory implication of the word, and had nothing to do with the fun loving party/social association of bikers. I’m not sure if Quig even knows who the Weasels are, but meant nothing derogatory toward them.

BIKERNET STEALTH REPORTER UNDERCOVER IN A NC SHOP–It is a busy week here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS. Last night( Wed.) SBW was the featured bike shop at Kristopher’s bike night. Kristopher’s is a biker friendly bar and grill here in the Charlotte area. The food is top notch and Kristopher, Robbie and all the crew there are first rate. All the staff were sporting SBW t-shirts! Tomorrow night(Fri.) is “Biker Night” at STEALTH BIKE WORKS and Sunday is the 1st Annual “No Class” bike show at SBW. It is a full plate this week!
We have finished the ’78 Shovel re-build, restoration project. The old Shovel is like new and it is super sharp! All of us here are proud of the end result. The old Shovel came to SBW in boxess at the end of last year and was in need of just about everything. In a way we will miss having the Shovel around the shop. It was a lot of work but the end result made it all worthwhile. It was fun bringing the old boy back to life!
This past Saturday a little event took place at SBW that made me stop and realize how lucky I am right now. It made all the effort, all the struggle, all the determination worth while. Let me set the story up. Stewart one of STEALTH BIKE WORKS best customers, we built the 71 Shovel that was pictured here a few weeks back for him had brought Cole to SBW a week earlier. Cole is 6 years old and one of Stu’s firends son. At the time Cole’s bicycle had been stolen and Cole was a little concerned with getting a new bike. Well the Saturday Cole visited the shop he told Max and myself that he wanted us to build him a bike. A couple of days went by and the plan was put into place.
Stu went out and purchased one of those bicycles that looks like a chopper. We did some SBW customizing on it with SBW stickers, a few little other odds and ends. Saturday(7-15-06) Stu, Cole and Cole’s dad arrive at STEALTH BIKE WORKS around noon and we all walk back to our service area and Cole spots the bike and his eyes are as big as saucers and he wants to know whose bike that is and when Stu tells him that it is his, the moment was worth a million! Cole said that we really listened to him and put fire(flames) on the bike.
Then Max and myself got big hugs from Cole, Stu got one too. Cole is bringing the bike to the “No Class” show Sunday. The only thing he was concerned with was how he was going to get the bike here since it is a ride in show. We worked it out so he can get there early and unload and ride around the building. I think everyone will be cool with that? You know it is the little things like this that make STEALTH BIKE WORKS all worth while!
I have to get this one little jab in before closing out. I see where the MOTOR COMPANY is introducing that “Brand New” model, the FXSTC. If I am not mistaken, wasn’t that model already introduced way back around 1984??????????????????????
Until next week, RIDE!

MEES EARNS VICTORY IN VIRGINIA FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON WRECKING CREW–SALUDA, Va. (July 17, 2006) – Jared Mees led Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew Saturday, earning a place on the top spot of the podium during an AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Twins championship competition. Mees – a Clio, Mich., resident – took the Joe Weatherly Memorial event victory, riding his Texter Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle entry to the win at Virginia Motor Speedway.
“It was actually the most important win of them all,” Mees said of his first win of the season, third career. “My team is based in Virginia, and all of (tuner, team owner) Johnny Goad’s friends, family and neighbors were all at the track. To pull off a win there in front of everyone made Johnny look like the fat cat.”
The Lancaster Harley-Davidson supported rider said the win helps ease the pain of some poor finishes earlier in the season – results the team couldn’t avoid.
“We had the lead in a race a few weeks back and then got a flat tire with less than five laps to go,” Mees said. “We’ve had some bad luck like that but it’s turning around. We have buttoned things up and now we can move forward. The win is going to just give this team more confidence. Everything is clicking and we’re lucky to have great dealers and sponsors to help make it all happen.”
The win propelled Mees into the top five of the point standings for the first time this year. Mees is fifth after six Twins events this season and he’s in good company too. Harley-Davidson dealer supported riders dominate the top 10 in AMA Flat Track point standings. Bryan Smith and the Pat Moroney’s/Screamin’ Eagle team are tied for first place with Chris Carr and the Quality Pre-Owned Ford Harley-Davidson team. Screamin’ Eagle factory supported riders Kenny Coolbeth and Rich King are third and fourth, respectively.
Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said this is exactly what the Motor Company was striving for when they decided to revive the Wrecking Crew team concept from the 1920s.
“The concept of the wrecking crew is working and we have our Harley-Davidson supported riders in four of the top five spots,” Paluso said. “From the team standpoint, everyone worked so well together this weekend. This is our second Wrecking Crew win of the season (Coolbeth earned the Lake Odessa, Mich. Win) and second in three events.”
Smith finished in third place during the main event while Coolbeth was sixth.
King did not qualify for the main event for the first time this season. A broken fuel line kept King from moving on to the final race.
“We were the third-fastest in the qualifier and then it went downhill from there,” King said. “We thought we would make a couple of changes to the bike and go faster and we ended up not making the main event because of that. Dirt track racing is like being on a roller coaster and every team has their ups and downs.
“The weekend could have been a lot worse. It’s tough watching the main event instead of racing in the main event but I had three teammates racing out there. Jared won and Chris Carr finished 16th and both of those things helped our team. It would have been nice to gain some ground on Chris, but we just have to put it all behind us, look forward and try to gain some championship points next weekend.”
There are seven GNC Twins events remaining on the schedule before the champion is crowned at the season finale event at Scioto Downs in Columbus, Ohio on Sept. 23.
“It’s so unfortunate what happened to Rich,” Paluso said. “The good news is that Kenny went out and finished well for the factory team. Without gaining any points Rich is still in the top five and he’s anxious to get to the next event. Rich is one of the best at staying focused on his season goals and this won’t get him down.”
The Mees victory shows the strength of the entire class of competition this season. Only Carr has earned multiple victories this season. Carr captured the season opening event win at Springfield, Ill., as well as the win in Syracuse, N.Y. Three other riders, Coolbeth (Lake Odessa, Mich., winner) and Dominic Beaulac (Lima, Ohio) and the Lombardi Harley-Davidson team as well as Mike Hacker and the Doc’s Harley-Davidson team (West Virginia) had posted wins this season before Mees added to the list on Saturday.
“The competition is great and we always have multiple winners throughout the season,” King said. “But what makes this season different is the amount of events. They split the series and separated the singles and the twins categories and now we don’t have as many races in each individual category. That makes each race more and more critical.”

BIKER BUILD-OFF’ PREMIERS–First episode airs August 7th 9 p.m.
Los Angeles, Calif. – July 18th, 2006 – “Biker Build-Off,” the consistently popular series from Original Productions that made custom bike-building a mass culture phenomenon, is back for its fifth season on Discovery. The first of thirteen new episodes will air August 7th at 9 p.m ? then on twelve subsequent Mondays, the last: October 30th 2006.
In season five 26 fabricators will square off in 13 head-to-head competitions. By the time the final detail is applied to the last bikes, these trend-setting builders will have once again set the standard for what makes choppers cool.
“In the six years since we started spotlighting chopper culture, we’ve seen how these bike legends as well as hot-shot newcomers connect with a huge, diverse audience,” says “Biker Build-Off” creator Thom Beers, CEO and Executive of Original Productions, and the man who first saw the television appeal of biker competitions. “With each series, we boost the excitement and celebrate the phenomenon even more. Season five will continue that tradition.” Actually, if truth was allowed to surface, Thom picked up the notion for the Build-off from an interview with Bandit during an Easyriders, Columbus bike show several years ago.
“Wait a minute,” Bandit said this morning. “I’m innocent. I’m not taking credit for anything.”
Watch of a complete report on the new Build-off series on Bikernet in the next couple of days.
FLYING DOG NATION REMEMBERS HUNTER S. THOMPSON- July 18, 2006 was the birthday of our co-conspirator and fellow instigator, Hunter S. Thompson.
Our package designer, longtime friend and artist of Hunter’s books, Ralph Steadman, said this of Dr. Gonzo after his death:
“…He told me 25 years ago that he would feel real trapped if he didn’t know that he could commit suicide at any moment. I don’t know if that is brave or stupid or what, but it was inevitable. I think that the truth of what rings through all his writing is that he meant what he said. If that is entertainment to you, well, that’s OK. If you think that it enlightened you, well, that’s even better. If you wonder if he’s gone to Heaven or Hell -rest assured he will check out them both, find out which one Richard Milhous Nixon went to -and go there. He could never stand being bored. But there must be Football too -and Peacocks…”

NASTIEST GIRL OF BIKERNET YET—So you thought this was a class web site. Well the only man to be tossed out of the Weasels MC proved us wrong. Check out this feature in Bandit’s Cantina. It’s fulla this crazy chick, bad tattoos and weapons.
BIKERNET READERS SHOWCASE FEATURE BIKE– My I.D. Number is 1270 I purchased the bike with only 1400 miles on it, I then had Rodney at Hot rod grafixxx in Greenvile Sc. apply the custom paint. I’ve tried to chrome plate just about everything but the frame. The wheels are invader style from wheels for choppers, and The windshield is made Windvest. The bike now has a little over 13,000 miles on it, and really was money well spent.
–Robert ReeceThis bike will be featured in the Bikernet Readers Showcase area. It’s a department wherein anyone can feature their one ride. Cool. –Bandit

DARIN MORRIS BREAKS OUT– This is Darin Morris, I’ve been doing all the fabrication for Central Coast Cycles for the last three years. I recently left Scott and the others to go out on my own. I opened a fabrication shop now in San Jose, California.
I also created a fabrication parts and supply E-commerce website (www.bungking.com) to help those in need of high quality fab parts at rock bottom prices. I am hoping that I can help people on a budget, who are smacked with the sticker shock from most of the products on the market today.
I’m also working on finishing a few show bikes that will be completed in the next month or two.

KENNY ROBERTS AND ROLAND SANDS DESIGN TEAM UP TO UNVEIL A WORLD’S FIRST AT LAGUNA SECA– Former AMA Champion Turned Motorcycle Designer Teams Up with Three-Time World Champion “King” Kenny Roberts to Build the World’s First MotoGP Powered Custom Motorcycle.
La Palma, CA, July 19, 2006 – Motorcycle designer Roland Sands and MotoGP legend Kenny Roberts will unveil the World’s First MotoGP powered custom motorcycle in the Team Roberts paddock at Laguna Seca Raceway on July 21, 2006. The creative collaboration, dubbed the KRV5 Tracker, was first discussed a year ago in the same location, which will now serve as the backdrop for the motorcycle’s much anticipated unveiling. Roberts will take the KRV5 Tracker for an exhibition lap beginning at 12:40pm on Saturday, July 22nd. The motorcycle will be located at the Red Bull “Energy Station” Saturday and Sunday in the pits.
The KRV5 Tracker boasts a 200 horsepower V5 engine, engineered by Team Roberts at their United Kingdom facility. The geometry, stance, and design lines are provided by Sands and are reminiscent of a 1914 Boardtracker.
“This is a bike I’ve wanted to build for a long time,” said Sands. “Building the bike with Kenny’s motor is like a dream come true. With the collision of a MotoGP engine and Boardtrack style it was our intention to create a potent mix of racing tech and iconic style. My goal for this bike is to further blur the lines of what a custom bike can be. I hope the motorcycle industry as a whole will appreciate the results.”
The project unites the unparalleled racing history and technical know-how of Team Roberts with the groundbreaking design of Roland Sands. Roberts was aware of Sands’ road racing pedigree, but it was Sands’ Discovery Channel Biker Build Off episode that turned Roberts onto Sands’ talent as a motorcycle designer and builder. After an introduction to his childhood hero at the 2005 Laguna Seca Moto GP race, one of Roberts’ KRV5 engines was on its way to Sands’ La Palma, CA shop at Performance Machine.

AMERICAN CYCLE AND AMERICAN BAGGER MAGAZINES COMING–Two new mags will hit the market in January. They are being published by a group including Dave Withrow, former publisher of Hot Bike, Street Chopper and Bike Works with Tony Frey, who recently worked for Easyriders publications selling ads. Howard Kelly will also contribute to both magazines.
Okay, I have a bitch. What’s with the name game in this industry. It’s as if there are only a half dozen words you can use to start a motorcycle business. Drives me crazy. There’s already American Dealer, American Rider, American Iron. I get lost. So many company names contain the word Horsepower, Thunder or Throttle. I get ’em all mixed up. I don’t know Full Throttle from Rolling Thunder. Okay, I’ve had my say. How about Withrow’s Wheels Magazine. I wouldn’t lose that one.
MORE GIRLS COMING TO THE GIRLS OF BIKERNET IN BANDIT’S CANTINA–Hey Darryl Briggs shot this some time ago it has been a while since this material ran in Biker and he said he is cool with us posting the shots. BEWARE OF DUMB DRIVERS– The tiny state of Rhode Island still ranks rock bottom in terms of driving knowledge, according to a national test conducted by GMAC Insurance. Oregon drivers answered the most questions correctly.
The 20-question test was based on questions asked in state driver’s license examinations, and revealed that about one in 11 licensed drivers in the United States would fail a state drivers test.
Based on average scores, northwestern states generally ranked highest while the bottom-ranking states were mostly in the northeast. One exception was Vermont, which ranked third. Washington state drivers ranked second. Drivers in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia ranked near the bottom, with D.C. finishing just ahead of Rhode Island.
The test and an accompanying survey were completed by 5,288 licensed drivers including at least 100 from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The survey asked about responses to specific driving situations.
Approximately one in three drivers said they usually do not stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, and at least one out of five drivers did not know that pedestrians in a crosswalk have the right of way. At least one in five also did not know that roads are most slippery when it first starts to rain after a dry spell.

Hey,
Sturgis/Bonneville fever is all over us. I work on the Salt Shaker nightly and she’s close, if the Accurate engine and the paint would arrive, I could be running this weekend. We bled the Brembo/ISR brakes last night.
I try to work out four times a week, but I’ve only hit one workout so far this week. I’m in trouble. The heat is kickin’ our butts, but it’s light compared to many segments of the country. I received a call from a reader last week who told me about 114 degree heat waves in South Dakota. Gonna be fun rolling through Arizona aboard a fresh engine.
Let’s hit the news. It’s looks like a biggie this week:
SMOKE OUT EAST WAS TWO WEEKS AGO– It was the biggest event we have ever had and American Biker TV should have a show out on it sometime in October. We are also having some discussions with some films crews about the Smoke Out West. I could talk about what went on for pages but for now I just want to talk about the bike show.
The bike show has one category – chopper and there are ten winners. The HORSE and the Smoke Out bike show are about a certain type of home built bike. Nothing wrong with bolt on chrome, but this show is completely different and it is about home made parts and raw originality. It is one of the only shows I know of that bikes with a rattle can paint jobs go head-to-head with major builders and sometimes win.
Some of the bikes in this year’s show were insane and this is the first year where everyone got it. I can’t wait to see what bikes show up in Cottonwood, AZ.
The HORSE, Backstreet Choppers Smoke Out Smoke Out is the world’s largest Chopper Rally and will be held out West for the first time October 6 and 7, 2006 on the Verde Valley Fairground in Cottonwood, AZ (20minutes South of Sedona). For more information (or a vender packet) check the HORSE, BC website (theHorsemag.com) or call (800) 531-9733.

Named in memory of John Michael “Clutch” Clubine, an active member of Freedom of the Road Riders (FORR-MO) who was killed by an inattentive driver. Clutch’s Law, which will take effect January 1, 2007, allows for additional penalties of up to $1,000 in fines and a drivers license suspension of up to 180 days, when someone is injured or killed, beyond the other fines for right-of-way violations. In New York, A4914 addresses what ABATE of New York considers inadequate sentencing of drivers who seriously injure or kill others on the road. Following a three and a half year battle in the statehouse, this right-of-way legislation has passed both houses of the state legislature with unanimous consent votes in both the State Senate and State Assembly, and is on Governor Pataki’s desk awaiting his signature. The bill substantially increases the suspension and revocation of license penalties in cases of serious injury or death. It also includes a mechanism for the judge to mandate courses for the perpetrators which they will be required to pay for. Seven states this year have passed laws to enact or strengthen penalties against right-of-way violators who cause injury or death on the roadways: Louisiana, Wisconsin, Georgia, Oklahoma, New Hampshire, Iowa and West Virginia. BIKER PARTY PLANS POLITICAL IMPACT– Steven Erato earned the nickname “Mad” in the 1970s after writing about the mistreatment of American veterans returning from Vietnam. Thirty years later, he says he’s still mad. It’s that indignation toward the system that led Erato to help found the Wisconsin-based American Biker Party – a year-old political party whose first convention recently drew national interest. “We have made it very clear that even though it’s called the American Biker Party and it was started by a group of bikers, this is not a biker organization,” said Erato, party co-chairman and co-owner of Eagle Nation Cycle in Neenah, WI. “Everybody’s welcome.” The party, hoping to mobilize in all 50 states, plans to someday run its own candidates for elected office, but for now plans to encourage its members to vote for candidates it supports. Nationwide, about 50 third parties exist in name, but fewer than a dozen are active and viable in more than one or two states, said Austin Cassidy, who runs a Florida-based Web site that tracks third-party politics in America. The American Biker Party recently held an organizational and strategic planning meeting in Louisville, Kentucky during the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) annual Convention. Kent State Interviews Stroker During Helmet Research
By Bandit |
No this isn’t Stroker, but his grandpa. Guess the year and make of the bike for a free Bikernet sticker and year-long Cantina Membership.
Photos and text from Stroker strok96@yahoo.comKent State University student interview of Stroker for use as reference material for her research paper on helmet laws.
KS: How long have you been riding?
Stroker: 34 years
KS: Have you ever been involved in an accident?
Stroker: When I started riding I could only touch one tiptoe leaning the bike to the side. Yes, on many occasions I was picking myself up off the dirt and piecing my machine back together. Thankfully, I have only gone down once on hard surface and have not had any accidents involving other vehicles on the road.
I was in a head on collision off road with another motorcycle about 25 years ago.
KS: Is there ever an occasion where you would wear a helmet?
Stroker: If I were playing professional football, I would wear a helmet. It involves intentional head contact at speeds under 10 miles per hour. Football helmets also have very little weight.
KS: Do you think helmets prevent injuries?
Stroker: The only way to prevent an injury is to prevent an accident. Yes, if you are going under 10 miles per hour I think a motorcycle helmet can offer some protection to the head. Gary Busy drew much attention to his accident through his pro-helmet campaign. If you are going 3 miles per hour, tip your bike over, and slam your head into a cement curb like he did, a helmet would be nice. The question is, what percentage of the time are you going that slowly on a road bike?
I believe at speeds over 10 miles per hour a helmet has a much greater potential to cause injury than to protect from it. I am willing to admit that in some circumstances a helmet may offer some protection. The pro helmet argument will never admit that there are circumstances under which a helmet will cause injury. Any one who does not believe helmets can and do kill people should ask, why did NASCAR lose 4 of their top drivers in the year 2000 from basil skull fractures (broken necks) and why did they then mandate using the HANS device as does most every major auto racing sanction?
Here is information from the manufacture of the HANS (Head And Neck restraining System)device.
The HANS device was invented by Robert Hubbard, PhD., Professor, College of Engineering at Michigan State University in collaboration with his brother-in-law, long-time IMSA sports car driver, Jim Downing. The objective was to reduce the chance of serious injury caused by the violent movement of the unrestrained head and helmet combination in an accident. In a high “G”accident, say 80 Gs, a 15-pound head and helmet combination effectively weighs 1200 pounds (15 x 80) for a split second. Crash recorders in INDY cars have seen over 100 Gs. The driver’s neck has to take this load. The generally accepted average threshold for injury is about 740 pounds. Injury level loads such as this can happen at speeds under 60 mph in a head-on crash. The HANS Device has been made mandatory in Formula 1 for the 2003 Racing Season. CART and Formula Atlantic have made HANS mandatory for all its series beginning 2002. A head and neck restraining system is mandatory in NASCAR’s Winston Cup, Busch and Craftsman Truck series, ASA and ARCA. The HANS Device is now mandatory and is being considered in other series around the world.
Yeah, I know a shitty shot, like most to follow, but this is Stroker’s old man. He learned to ride during WWII as a Shore Patrol member for the Navy.
If you remove the extra helmet weight and use the average 9-pound weight of a human head in the above equation it shows us that the human neck is perfectly designed to take the stress of an 80G impact. 80×9=720 pounds of force applied to the neck, with an accepted injury threshold of 740 pounds. Make note that the Professor from the college of Engineering at Michigan State University also tells us that these forces take place in accidents at speeds under 60 miles per hour and he is referring to forces nearly two times the point at which injury to the neck occurs. This is sound and accepted engineering knowledge yet, the Agencies and groups entrusted by the American people for safety information refuse to accept or even consider how many people are caused injury by being forced to wear motorcycle helmets. They refuse to include in their statistical analysis how many injuries are caused by helmets and only look for information showing the good they might do.
The HANS device effectiveness is dependant on the driver being securely belted into a steel safety cage. It is not a practical or useful device to be used on street motorcycles. Also keep in mind that this is but one reason that helmets are not effective in protecting the street motorcyclist. Year after year the numbers show that more deaths per accident occur in the States with motorcycle helmets made mandatory and year after year the pro helmet argument twists the numbers to try to show differently.
This year NHTSA hurried to the media to say that since Florida removed its mandatory helmet law for adult riders the number of motorcycle deaths increased 11%. Sounds pretty bad when put that way doesn’t it. What they fail to tell anyone is that the number of riders coming back to motorcycling after removing the helmet law increased 40,000. A 20% increase in motorcycle registrations in one year. When all the figures are compiled according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the death rate was actually lower by 5.2%.
KS: Both sides of this issue back up their claims with pages and pages of statistics. Do you feel these statistics prove anything?
They prove that if you include enough variables and do enough math you can make statistics say anything you want them to. Both sides of the argument are guilty of doing this. Although the statistical analysts have valid reasons to introduce variables into the number crunching, it nonetheless can be used to achieve the desired results. There are an infinite number of variables that could be thought of in a motor vehicle accident and depending on which combination of them you use, you can arrive at the desired answer. Certainly using statistics has proven to be a weak argument as we have been going back and forth with helmet law issues now for decades. What I find very frustrating are agencies or groups, given the public’s trust, who out-right lie about what the numbers say. The most frequently quoted study used by the pro helmet argument is the 1996 NHTSA report:
Motorcycle Safety Foundation (part of NHTSA)
Center for Disease Control
National Center for Injury Prevention and Control
American College of Emergency Physicians
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
Here’s, to name a very few, that have used a line out of context from the report or variations of it like:
Helmets were 35 percent effective in preventing death
Helmets reduce the risk of death in a motorcycle crash by 35% percent.
The average person or even a legislator reading that or hearing it on radio or television would think that meant anyone in a motorcycle accident without a helmet would be killed 35% of the time.
Riding with Long Leggs in Badlands.
The truth is, that is a percentage of a percentage. The report states that motorcycle helmets protect from any type of injury in only 9% of accidents. Only 1.3 percent of the unhelmeted group died and that is the portion that they estimate 35 percent of would have lived if wearing a helmet.
35% of 1.3% that comes out to 0.46%
An estimated 0.46% of the people in motorcycle accidents would not have died had they been wearing a helmet is what the report really says.
91% of motorcycle accidents receive absolutely no benefit from wearing a helmet. That’s what the report really says.
You may say, “but still a small portion benefited and that makes it worth while.” My reply is that they have refused to include any information on the number of people who were injured because they were wearing a helmet. I refer you to the HANS information I spoke of earlier.
Another point is that the 1996 NHTSA report used data from six states and only 10,000 cases. Of that 10,000 almost 8,000 of them were helmeted. Does that sound like a fair comparison to you? Does 10,000 seem like a legitimate representation of a nation of 288 million people. They took this report to the Congress of the United States and the American public as the absolute truth about helmet safety.
Life on the road for Stroker.
They are also still using information from the Hurt report containing data that is over twenty years old.
History of helmets estimated effectiveness at preventing deathbefore 1996 40 to 73%
1996 35%
2001 29%
Why does the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations data consistently show a decrease in helmet effectiveness? Are helmets really less effective today than they were 10 years ago, No. What has changed is the amount of data they are using. Starting with none, then 6 states in 1996, and in 2001 they used 23 states. Less than one half of the country. In 2001 they say helmet effectiveness dropped by 6%, yet the number of states with people riding without helmets went from 24 to 30. That should have caused an increase in the relative percentage of lives saved comparing helmeted to unhelmeted riders. It did not because less people die when they do not wear helmets. As shown by NHTSA’s own reports.
The 1996 report also tries to claim public burden stating that the group of motorcyclist that required public funds to pay for their injuries had costs 5% higher on unhelmeted riders. They forget to mention that the source for the data states “95% confidence limits is a standard measure of reliability when estimates are based on sample data” saying the 5% higher costs are within the margin of error and mean nothing. You can go from one Hospital to another with the exact same injury and have a 5% cost difference. They also fail to mention that in the group of riders that paid for their own medical expense the costs for helmeted riders were 19% higher. Sounds to me like people wearing helmets are a public burden. It also sounds like the government and insurance companies are being over billed by the medical industry. We’ve never heard of that happening before have we? NHTSA says, “lets just blame the victims for it!”
KS: What do you think is at the heart of the helmet law issue?
Stroker: The theory I am working under at this point is so disgusting that I will not share it until I have more facts to back it up.
KS: Do you think the debates are a waste of time or are they serving a purpose?
Stroker: Peoples lives are at stake. Do you think it is a waste?
KS: Is there anything, in your opinion that should be done differently in researching whether helmet laws are effective?
Stroke waiting at Rapid Airport calmly for 6-foot Leggs to arrive.
Stroker: We all know that helmet laws are effective at forcing people to wear helmets. I think the question your asking is, in researching if helmets are effective. I have already shown that the statistics are being manipulated and misrepresented. I have also shown that engineers can show scientific facts that prove helmets cause injury. That is the direction I think helmet research should go. We are fighting a perceived common sense issue here. The idea that something on your head is better than nothing on your head. In the past science has shown what appears to be common sense is in fact wrong. There was a time when common sense told people that the world was flat. Anyone that challenged that notion was thought insane, put in prison, or even put to death. It did not make any sense, if the world was round we would fall off. Science proved them wrong and science can prove that something on your head does not always make you safer than nothing on your head.
KS: Do you think this issue is a matter of public concern and/or personal freedom?
Stroker: Personal freedom should be the highest order of public concern! People of this country have laid down their lives in its name.
KS: Are there any instances where you think a helmet should be mandatory?
Stroker: I believe at this point you already know my answer.
KS: Is the helmet law issue a pop cultural phenomenon or do you think these laws have been around since the motorcycle was first built?
Stroker: Well, this question is not about what I think. The first helmet law in the United States was about 80 years after the invention of the motorcycle. The reason it came into being had nothing to do with safety of the rider or public burden but, that is another story.
Stroker and Leggs in the Badlands.
KS: You live in Florida where, in order to not wear a helmet, you must purchase extra insurance coverage to enjoy that privilege. How do you feel about that? Is it a compromise of sorts?
Stroker: Of course it is a compromise, and it sends out messages that are lies. On average there are over 2 million TBI’s (traumatic brain injuries) in the United States each year. Of them it is estimated that 780 are motorcycle riders. Based on 780 out of 2,000,000 it is decided that motorcyclist are a public burden and should be forced to have extra insurance. I think that is criminal. Over 500,000 TBI’S each year are from automobile accidents. Are they not a public burden? If helmets are such wonderful safety devices why are there no laws mandating them for cars? How would John Q Public like to be forced by the government to put on a helmet every time they drove to work or to the corner store for some food? The motorcycle helmet laws have nothing to do with safety or public burden. If they did we would have automobile helmet laws as well.
One type of TBI is a concussion. What many people are not aware of is that we can receive concussions without any direct physical contact to the head. Whiplash causes brain concussions along with any sudden violent movement of the head. If you refer to the HANS information I stated earlier you will see in their example a helmet will increase the violent movement of the head/helmet combination from 720 pounds to over 1200 pounds of force. Brain concussions can and often do cause death. Even with a helmet on in a direct impact over 13 miles an hour (the rating for motorcycle helmets) you will have a brain concussion. You might look prettier for the EMT’s but you will be just as dead. Engineers will tell you to have any protection from concussion in a 60 mile per hour direct impact it would take a helmet the size of a kitchen stove. Referring back to automobile TBI’s, some of you may be wondering how there are over 500,000 TBIs in automobiles with these wonderful new air bags? Air bags do nothing to protect you from concussion. You look prettier but you’re just as dead.
KS: I know you have done extensive research on your own concerning these laws. What motivates you to be so concerned, besides being a biker?
Stroker’s bike at luxury accomodations.
Stroker: You are right, this is personal. Riding a motorcycle is dangerous, as is driving a car and getting out of bed in the morning. I put my life on the line every time I throw my leg over the saddle and I want to choose what is the best way to protect myself. My life, my choice. What else motivates me on this issue? it is obvious to me there is some reason this issue is being taken to our lawmakers and it is not safety. Nor is it public burden. The legislators are certainly not bringing this to the floor on their own accord. They have many other things to keep themselves busy. Some one is pushing this issue on them. I want to know whom and what the real reason behind their efforts. I have been asking people in political circles for a long time. I have received several different answers and the majority of them do not make any sense.
KS: Is there anything in your research that you have found that might be overlooked? In other words, can you offer an angle that isn’t widely researched?
Stroker: Covered that
KS: Is there anything else you would like to comment on, or add?
Stroker: Yes, another thing that riders have been trying to get through to these so-called experts is that helmets limit our hearing and vision. NHTSA and many other groups continue to tell the public that the people riding the motorcycles don’t know what they’re talking about. NHTSA did yet another study and concluded that the only sounds a motorcyclist need to hear are horns and emergency sirens. They say the study shows that is all anyone can hear without a helmet due to wind and motor noise. I don’t need any scientist, data, or statistics because I can tell you from my own experience that is an absolute lie. Many people make jokes about me riding with a bandana covering my face, but you see I discovered while riding in the Arizona desert that if you use a large bandana to cover your face, tie it high on the back of your head so that it completely covers your ears it almost completely eliminates wind noise. I can hear everything around me, I can hear birds singing as I ride by at highway speeds.
Have you ever been to an event using an amateur P.A. system, such as an outdoor high school graduation where the wind blowing across the microphone makes so much noise you can’t hear the speaker? But, when you hear a professional microphone used outside by a news reporter it is quiet? That’s because they have a wind cover on the microphone. It works the same way.
Stroker’s trusty Softail.
If you believe being able to hear doesn?t protect the safety of a motorcycle rider you are wrong. No matter what equipment a rider has on if they are in a crash they will get hurt. The best way to protect a motorcyclist is to avoid an accident in the first place. We need to use all of our senses to their maximum capability to do that.
Non-riders would never know that we can tell when a vehicle is approaching behind us without seeing or even hearing them. You can feel them. A vehicle compresses the air in front of it as it pushes forward creating a pillow of air that reaches an amazing distance in front of them.
Back to hearing, I will give you a personal example of how important hearing can be to a rider. I was riding through small town America in Michigan one fall day. It was a typical main street lined with three story buildings creating blind intersections. I was suddenly aware of a noise around me. Michigan, being a helmet state, my ears were covered by dense foam and then a thick layer of plastic and I could not make out exactly what the sound was. More importantly I could not distinguish what direction it was coming from. You see, to detect direction of sound we depend on the stereo effect of having two ears. The hard outer surface of a helmet tends to blend the sounds coming from different directions and feeds them equally to both ears. I turned my head to try to visually locate where the sound was coming from and when I returned to a forward view a police car with its lights and siren on came charging into the intersection directly in front of me and STOPPED. I had to make a panic stop (maximum braking) arriving with my front wheel only inches from the driver’s door. I will never forget the officer looking down at my wheel slowly raising his mirrored glasses level to mine, giving me a cheesy grin and continuing off on his mission.
I will never know why he stopped, if he would have just continued through the intersection it would have been no problem. If he would have had an old fashion siren, I may have been able to tell it was a police car but it was one of the new type that cycle through all different siren noises and it happened to be in one of those weird pulsing and whirring phases. I would have easily identified the sound and more importantly the direction of the police car had I not been wearing a helmet and this situation would have turned from a close call into a non-issue. As far as only needing to hear horns and sirens as NHTSA says, most road motorcycle accidents involve another 4-wheeled vehicle and over 70% of the time they are at fault. Usually stating they did not see the motorcycle. If they do not see us they certainly are not going to be sounding their horn as any warning. I can tell you from experience that a motorcyclist can hear the vehicles around them if they are not wearing a helmet. I can hear a car approaching an intersection before I can see it.
NHTSA says helmets don’t block vision. The way they test it is true. If you sit in a chair and use a machine to check your peripheral vision it checks fairly well. They admit that even in that test some peripheral vision is blocked but say it doesn’t matter. What the machines can’t tell them is that in the real world things are quite different and there is more than one way to limit vision. Motorcycle riders often will turn their head for a visual check as mirrors don’t always do the job, especially if you have had some reason stopping you from checking them in the last few seconds. NHTSA says that helmets don’t limit the ability to check the lane beside the rider. That is fairly accurate, but when making a lane change, a rider will often need to rotate farther around to look down the adjacent lane as a vehicle may be closing at a much higher rate of speed then they are traveling and would be dangerous to pull in front of them. That is when a helmet will directly block the rider’s view. If you keep both hands on the bars (as required by law in many states) and rotate your head to look behind, you will see only helmet. If your eyes are pointing forward as in a peripheral vision test a helmet does not block much. If your eyes are at their side limit of motion a helmet blocks a lot of vision.
Stroker ain’t all about statistics.
Another way helmets limit vision is by greatly delaying the amount of time it takes to turn the head. Not only from the extra mass of the helmet but, mostly because of wind resistance. At highway speed it is fairly easy to initially turn your head to the side as the wind is actually helping you. Returning to the forward view can take a great deal of effort by the neck. In potential accident situations hundredths of a second can mean the difference between life and death.
As long as I’m talking about wind resistance (drag) I will also mention the tremendous amount of fatigue caused from the added drag of a helmet. For non-riders, have you ever stuck your hand out the window of a car at highway speeds? It takes a considerable amount of strength to keep from having your arm slammed against the window frame. Not only does the over all size of a helmet increase drag. On a standard full helmet there is considerable right angle surface around the face opening that act like air dams. The amount that a helmet pulls at a motorcyclist’s neck at highway speed is unbelievable. After only one hour of riding at highway speed in a helmet the neck fatigue can make you feel completely exhausted. Especially if you are pushing a head wind.
Without a helmet I can ride all day on the expressway without any neck fatigue. The human head is quite aerodynamic, almost makes you think we were made to go fast. Fatigue can play a major roll in motorcycle accidents. If I am not alert and using all of my sense, my chances of avoiding an accident are greatly lowered.
Stroker and one of the major leaders in the motorcyclists’ right industry, Balls.
I believe that complaining without offering a solution only makes you part of the problem. Therefore I will close with this thought. The roll of the government in safety equipment should be to keep the public informed of ways to protect themselves. The agencies can use the same money they are using now to push their law agendas (and it is a lot of money) to produce public awareness campaigns. It is not the job of the government to tell the people they are too stupid to make choices regarding their own safety. Life is about risk. Each person has their own level of risk at which they choose to live. Some people believe leaving the security of their home is a highly unnecessary risk (that is a fact, believe it or not). Some people feel life is not worth living unless you are on the edge. Most of us choose something in between, and that is how this country was intended to be. Government for the people by the people. Safety equipment should be our free choice as long as it does not directly infringe on others rights. Every person that steps out of bed in the morning and takes a breath of air is a potential public burden. That is not a valid argument for striping one of their freedom of choice, their freedom to live their life as they need to.
Additional note:
NBC news recently ran a story questioning whether the government agency whose jobs depend on their ability of finding ways to make our highways safer, should also be in charge of testing that same safety equipment and reporting on it. Right on NBC, we have the fox guarding the hen house!

DYNA HANDLING PROBLEMS–The Dyna rubber mounts are not the problem. The rubber mounts fail because they were not designed to take side loads. Erik Buell teaches in patent no. 4,776,423 and 6, 213,240 that rubber mounted motorcycles must have at least three stabilzer links connecting the powertrain unit to the frame to prevent lateral instability. The Dyna and V-Rod are manufactured with only ONE STABILIZER LINK.
TRUE-TRACK, suspension stabilization device for DYNA’s Part NO. 20-30 will eliminate front and rear motor mount failure, NOW. The TRUE-TRACK kit includes 2 units, a front stabilization device with a vertical travel limiter and a rear stabilization unit, for a total of three stabilizer links. Dyna handling will be greatly improved as well, it’s like riding a different motorcycle!

J&P IN DAYTONA–Daytona Beach News-Journal, FL – Rural Iowa may not be known far and wide as a motorcycle Mecca. But that’s where J&P Cycles, a retail mail-order business for motorcycle parts and accessories, grew from a small mom and pop operation in 1979 to a mega-marketer with 300 employees today. Its 3-pound, 1,143-page catalog is one of the largest of its kind in the industry, according to founder John Parham, who owns the company with his wife, Jill.
When the time came to expand, however, J&P Cycles set its sights on the place known far and wide as a Harley-Davidson haven.”We chose Daytona because it’s a motorcycle town,” Parham said in a recent telephone interview from his Iowa headquarters.
Actually, he chose Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona, a burgeoning biker-themed retail, restaurant and lodging complex north of Ormond Beach at Interstate 95 and U.S. 1, that appears destined to become a year-round magnet for enthusiasts.
J&P Cycles broke ground in May for a 24,000-square-foot showroom with an 11,000-square-foot call center on the second floor. Earlier this month, the company also bought a 14,000-square-foot building, formerly occupied by Ocean Design Inc., at the Ormond Beach Airport Business Park for $1.15 million to use for storage.
“It’s an excellent location,” said Parham of Destination Daytona, where motorcycle magnate Rossmeyer has created what promises to be a veritable theme park for bikers. “We’re looking forward to getting open and working with Bruce and the rest of the merchants,” added the parts entrepreneur, who owns a home in Palm Coast as well as condos in Daytona Beach and Destination Daytona.
If all goes well, the new showroom will be completed in early January 2007, he said, and open for business by Bike Week in March

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE RIDERS READY TO BATTLE FOR VICTORY AS AMA FLAT TRACKERS TACKLE VIRGINIA–MILWAUKEE (July 6, 2006) – When Rich King gets ready for a race weekend, he mentally goes through the motions of competing on his Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson entry in AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Twins championship competition. Armed with his 26 years of racing experience, the Iowa native might have an advantage going into this weekend’s event at the Virginia Motor Speedway in Saluda, Va.
After all, no one has raced there before. That’s something the veteran likes.
“I look forward to going somewhere that no one has raced at yet,” King said. “I think the teams that have more experience will be the better teams this weekend. I think we especially have an advantage because we have four riders in the Wrecking Crew and because of that we have a lot of knowledge at our finger tips. I think that will help us tremendously as we step onto a new facility.”
Racing kicks off at Virginia Motor Speedway at 5 p.m. with timed practice on Saturday. Heat races begin at 7:30 p.m. before the main event starts at 10 p.m.
King is currently second in points, just seven points behind points leader Chris Carr and the Quality Pre-Owned Ford Harley-Davidson team. Carr captured the season opening event win at Springfield, Ill., as well as the win in Syracuse, N.Y. Three other riders, King’s Screamin’ Eagle teammate Kenny Coolbeth (Lake Odessa, Mich., winner) and Dominic Beaulac (Lima, Ohio winner) and the Lombardi Harley-Davidson team as well as Mike Hacker and the Doc’s Harley-Davidson team (West Virginia) have posted wins this season.
King said the number of winners is making for great racing for the fans, and some tight point standings in the championship chase.
“I think right now the team that can go the rest of the season with the least amount of problems will win the championship,” King said. “There just won’t be any room for error. We’ve already had a good mix of winners and now it will come down to whoever makes the least amount of mistakes.
“Kenny and I are lucky because if one of us is struggling, we can look at their data and immediately have something else to try. We don’t have a lot of time in Flat Track racing. We just have a few qualifying laps, a few heat laps and that’s it. We have to be ready for the main event in a short amount of time and being able to discuss a setup with a few extra people has been great this season.”
King said the team is getting better each weekend. Coolbeth has one victory and King has finished on the podium twice. This weekend, however, the veteran will use a blend of old school experience and new school technology in hopes of making a third trip to the podium.
“I am going to the new track with an open mind and we’ll see what happen,” King said. “With the internet you can find so much information, so I will study whatever information I can find about the track and prepare myself that way. I’ll go through the various scenarios and hopefully that will put me in the ballpark without having a single lap under my belt. Then we go from there and figure things out as we go along.”
AMA Top 10 Point standings: Flat Track
1. Chris Carr, Quality Pre-Owned Ford Harley-Davidson 67
2. Rich King, Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson 60
3. Bryan Smith, Pat Moroney’s/Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson 54
4. Kenny Coolbeth, Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson 52
5. Glen Schnabel, Harley-Davidson 46
6. Mike Hacker, Doc’s Harley-Davidson 37
7. Jared Mees, Texter HD/ Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson 36
8. Shaun Russell, Bartels Harley-Davidson 31
9. Dominic Beaulac, Lombardi Harley-Davidson 29
Joe Kopp, Latus Harley-Davidson 29
In addition to the direct team sponsorship, Harley-Davidson will also provide support through professional flat track contingency and the Rider Support Verification Program (RSVP). Under the Screamin’ Eagle banner the support will total more than $140,000 throughout the 2006 season. This includes a contingency program for qualified Harley-Davidson XR750 riders on the AMA Flat Track series.
QUOTES FROM 1955–“I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $20.”
“Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be long before $2000 will only buy a used one.”
“If cigarettes keep going up in price, I’m going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.”
“Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?”
“If they raise the minimum wage to $1, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.”
“When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we’d be better off leaving the car in the garage.”
“Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.”
SAFER ROADWAYS IN PENNSYLVANIA–Scranton Times-Tribune, USA – HARRISBURG – Technology is credited with making Pennsylvania’s roadways safer, but some motorcyclists are concerned one bit of high-tech gadgetry might be putting them at risk.
Intersections across the state increasingly rely on automated stoplights that are triggered to change from red to green when they detect an approaching vehicle. Many motorcycles, however, aren’t substantial enough to trigger the lights to change.
It leaves bikers with an unsettling choice: Take a chance by driving through the red light or wait for a larger vehicle to come along and trigger it to turn green.”And if you’re late for work, who’s going to wait 10 minutes for a car to come up behind you?” asked Josie Johnson, president of the Luzerne County chapter of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education, a statewide motorcyclists’ advocacy group.
ABATE members say the state Department of Transportation is aware of the problem but has done little to address it. PennDOT spokesman Steve Chizmar said there is no easy solution.
Automated stoplights rely on metal-detecting cables that are laid in a loop pattern into the pavement of a traffic lane. The devices can be tweaked to make the cables more sensitive in detecting vehicles, Mr. Chizmar said, but if they are too sensitive they can be triggered by passing cars in other lanes.
“The bottom line is, if we turn up the sensitivity, it increases the chance for false readings,” he said. “There is not a fix-all solution to this.”
PennDOT advises motorcyclists to look for tell-tale markings in the roadway that indicate a loop is buried beneath. Stopping a bike closer to those marks, preferably on the outside edges of the traffic lane, can help trip the sensor, said Mr. Chizmar.
Bikers also can buy “green light triggers” – essentially powerful magnets – to attach to the underside of their motorcycles, but Ms. Johnson said the devices offer mixed results at best.
The issue is drawing attention from some state lawmakers, including Rep. Rick Geist, R-Blair, who chairs the House Transportation Committee. To examine the problem, Mr. Geist set up an experiment in his Altoona district in which two motorcycles of differing weights approached four intersections that use the automated lights. He said the heavier bike tripped two of the lights, while the lighter model tripped none.”We only looked at four intersections, and we’re talking thousands of these around the state,” Mr. Geist said. PennDOT did not have a tally on how many automated lights are in use statewide.
By law, if a motorcycle doesn’t trigger the light to turn green, the rider is allowed to treat it as a stop sign, proceeding through the red light once he has assured traffic is clear.
If an accident occurs, however, the motorcyclist likely will be found at fault because he went through the red light. And if a biker gets ticketed for driving through a red light, the burden is on the rider to prove the light wasn’t functioning properly.
“It’s a defensible ticket,” Mr. Geist said, “but it’s a pain in the heinie for these guys to have to go before a district magistrate and make their case to get themselves cleared.”
ABATE says the stoplights are becoming more problematic as more people opt for motorcycles over cars. Motorcycle registrations in the state have increased by nearly 50 percent during the past five years, totaling 318,283 in 2005, PennDOT records show. For now, bikers are left to balance convenience with safety, said Ms. Johnson.
“If you’re left sitting there and the light won’t trip, you have to take the chance of easing out of the light and hoping you don’t get broadsided,” she said.Adds Mr. Geist: “If a motorcycle ventures out into an intersection, it’s going to have a pretty tough time against an 18-wheeler.”

IRON BUFFALO BLUES BY CHARLIE BRECHTEL AVAILABLE IN STURGIS–Copperopolis, CA – Renowned motorcycle historian, musician and storyteller, Charlie Brechtel, will be releasing Iron Buffalo at the world famous Buffalo Chip Campground during their 25th Anniversary Celebration. Iron Buffalo is a fitting tribute to Indian Larry and Dave Mann.
The title track, Iron Buffalo will take you on a trip to Gasoline Alley where you can imagine Larry wrenching on a bike. Ghost Cowboy is a melodic journey to the wide-open spaces of the old west where you will see visions of the Ghost Rider, made famous by Dave Mann. Sonny Keaton, a true “Old School Biker and Bike Builder” collaborated with keyboardist Ray Ray Crow to compose a true biker anthem, Horses of Iron and Steel; this song is what being a biker is all about. The album also includes songs about Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductees along with future members of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. It includes the 5-Ball Blues after Bandit.
This will be the third Album for the Charlie Brechtel Band, and with each song you will feel the wind in your face and the sweet vibration of the road. Charlie will take you on a journey through time and boundaries that have been closed to all but a chosen few, he will take you into the Inner Circle. Charlie also produces a weekly radio show on the Internet at

HARDBIKES HITS THE BADLANDS HARD–Hardbikes is the place to be at the 2006 Sturgis Rally & Races! Hardbikes is located off Lazalle Street and will be open daily during the rally featuring a couple swinging chicks from the Girls of Bikenet.com.
Festivities include free pictures of you with the Hard Bodies of Bikernet on Hardbikes, paint demonstrations from Area 5150, fashion shows, burnouts and much more.
“You guys are going to like the show at Hardbikes,” said Bandit. “If the new line of custom motorcycles don’t choke your chicken then the Girls of Bikernet will.”
The Hardbikes parking lot will be filled with “must see” custom motorcycles from the 330 Neo Bobber to the hot rod 200 Bobber. What is unique about the Custom Hardbikes Motorcycles is that the buyer designs the bike from a complete A-list of custom parts. The dealer then works on the fitment for a completely original and custom fit motorcycle. Hardbikes then manufacturers the custom motorcycle to the exact specifications.
HEAVY POLICE PATROLS IN HOLLISTER–While many locals and visitors have complained that it seemed that law enforcement officers, rather than hordes of bikers, staged an invasion of Hollister this Fourth of July, Police Chief Jeff Miller said Friday the swarms of officers patrolling downtown streets during the unplanned biker rally were part of the department’s efforts to ensure public safety during an uncertain event.
“We didn’t know how many (bikers) where coming,” Miller said. “Hindsight is always 20/20. Our goal was to make sure things were safe.”
Miller, who has come under fire this week from city officials and residents for what many perceived as overpolicing during the unofficial rally, said that dozens of rumors had police preparing for the worst-case scenario.
“One rumor was that the bikers would all ride in at the same time and park their bikes in the middle of (San Benito Street), effectively closing down the street,” Miller said. “We were also hearing that the Hell’s Angels and the Mongols were coming to ‘teach the city a lesson.’ We had to have officers available to prevent the problems that everyone had been predicting.”
Hollister Mayor Robert Scattini told the Free Lance earlier this week that he was “embarrassed” to be the city’s mayor after receiving dozens of complaints from local citizens and visiting bikers about overzealous law enforcement. Others have complained that bored cops punished the bikers with tickets and citations for coming to the canceled rally.
Miller, who organized public safety for the rally, said law enforcement officials did their best to adapt once it became apparent that the crowds were smaller than expected. He said fewer officers were on patrol for this year’s event than for the 2005 rally and that the number of officers on the street decreased each day after the hordes of bikers failed to materialize.
“We adjusted each day to what we saw,” Miller said. “But Friday was the big unknown.”
For most of Friday, police outnumbered motorcyclists, prompting some locals to drive around the city with a “Police Rally” sign on their truck.
Hollister resident and motorcyclist Joe Love called the influx of police officers “massive overkill.”
