It takes more coin than you realize to go racing, especially in Bonneville. I can’t imagine what it takes to drag race week after week. Scooter, our photographer in Phoenix, is delivering our rider, Valerie Thompson to the flats. She’s currently second in the V-Rod destroyer class of drag bikes nation wide. She ran 153 mph on the salt last year on a V-Rod. Can the 120-inch Panhead beat that? We’ll see.

They let the blacks get away with their loud bump, bump , rap crap and all that. So why shouldn’t we be allowed to be heard before someone pulls out in front of us. At least we have a chance that way. If you are riding on some sewing machine, then they won’t hesitate to pull out in front of you in the least.

BUELL XBRR MODELS COMPETE IN FORMULA XTREME RACE AT VIR–ALTON, Va. (August 21, 2006) – Buell racers Steve Crevier and Mike Hale competed aboard Buell XBRR models on Saturday in the AMA Formula Extreme race during the ninth round of the 2006 Formula Xtreme championship August 18-20 at the Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Va.

The weekend provided many learning opportunities, as it was the first time the XBRR has been to the fast, yet technical track, and Crevier’s first time ever on VIR’s asphalt. With a long, high-speed front straightaway and tight twisties in the back, the unique, 2.2-mile track configuration makes it necessary for competitive teams to excel at both horsepower and handling.

Crevier, riding for Deeley Harley-Davidson/Buell Canada, qualified 13th and crossed the finish line in the final race in 11th place on Saturday. Hale, riding for the Classic H-D/Buell-Millville H-D/Buell-Innovative Motorcycle Research team, qualified 18th and also finished the final in 18th. Their times over the weekend improved as they learned the track and adjusted the gearing and suspension settings.

Crevier raced the XBRR in the season-opening Formula Xtreme race at Daytona 200, as well as those at Road America and Mid-Ohio, while Hale competed aboard an XBRR at the Laguna Seca and Mid-Ohio races.

“With the solid reliability of the XBRR, the teams are able to get some real learning under their belts, and experiment with settings,” said Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. “Since the bike had never been to VIR before, some basic set-up work was needed. They learned a lot toward what is needed to become truly competitive.”

The next Formula Xtreme race for the Buell teams will be Sept. 1-3 at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. It will be the penultimate round of the 11-race series.

KIDS & CHROME RAISED THOUSANDS FOR KIDS AND THE STURGIS MUSEUM–Five hundred of the motorcycle world’s biggest movers and shakers attended the 2nd annual Kids & Chrome fundraiser, sponsored by Bikernet.com, held August 9th during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The event, held at the Black Hills Convention Center in Spearfish, is a benefit for to raise money to build a new children’s facility in Rapid City, SD.

“Kids & Chrome raised thousands of dollars for children with special needs,” says Bob Illingworth, Director of Fund Raising. “Final figures are not available as we are waiting for accounts receivable/payable to balance, but needless to say, we raised a significant amount of money for these kids. We are very grateful to our sponsors and all others who worked so hard to make this event successful.”

Highlights included:

Dave Nichols, Editor-in-Chief of V-Twin Magazine, presented the Teresi V-Twin Prize to Pegasus Fuel Injection, in recognition of their new, outstanding product introduced at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati and Daytona Bike Week. Pegasus will receive $100,000 in advertising in Paisano Publication magazines during the current year.

Hamsters USA raised over $45,000 for Kids and Chrome at an auction held at their annual Monday night banquet.

When Master Builder Billy Lane invites you to breakfast, you show up. Over 30 of the world’s top custom builders attended Billy’s 1st Annual Builders’ Breakfast on August 8th at his Sturgis Rally headquarters, the Broken Spoke Saloon. Billy raised over $12,000 for Kids and Chrome.

Over 20 of the world’s top builders signed the gas tank on Desperado Motorcycles’ “Good Times Bobber.” The bobber sold at the Kids & Chrome live auction for $29,000.

The event featured a five-course dinner, silent auction, live auction, and raffle of two donated motorcycles-an $80,000 custom by Jerry Covington of Covington’s Cycle City in Woodward, OK, won by Al B. of Sun City West, AZ. The other bike was a $45,000 “Frontier” custom bagger from Todd & Shelly Erdman of Thunder Mountain Customs in Ft. Collins, CO, won by Steven B. of St. Charles, IL.

HINES EARNS SECOND CONSECUTIVE VICTORY AT MEMPHIS MOTORSPORTS PARK; TAKES BACK POINTS LEAD–MEMPHIS (Aug. 21, 2006) – Andrew Hines learned a lot this weekend. He learned how his body and his Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines V-Rod work together to produce good or poor reaction times. He learned how important momentum is going into the final handful of races in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. He also learned how valuable a good pair of dry shoes is when the rain clears.

Hines rode his Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod to victory Monday after rain caused a one-day delay in final eliminations for the 19th annual O’Reilly Mid-South NHRA Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park.

The victory propelled Hines back into the No. 1 spot in the POWERade point standings. It was also his second consecutive win in Memphis – a career first.

“I’ve never won at the same track twice and this was even more important because there was so much on the line,” Hines, a 23-year-old Indianapolis resident, said. “To come back here and win another big race in extreme weather conditions is a testament to what this team can do. We won in Denver in the intense heat and then we come here and deal with the worst heat we’ve seen all year, tons of rain and lots of delays. And through all of it, the team did such a great job figuring out what we needed to do to get down the track.”

Hines beat Antron Brown in the final for his second victory of the season and seventh career win in 15 career final round appearances. Brown had a 15-point lead going into the event and now trails by three points. Hines earned the victory quickly, as Brown left early on his U.S. Army Suzuki, fouling at the starting line. As soon as Hines saw the win-light come on in his lane, he lifted and cruised to the win and the points lead.

It was the fifth time the riders have faced each other this season including two final round matchups. Brown won the first final round face-off (Atlanta) but Hines has the 3-2 lead in the season series.

“It was such a big win because it gives us the positive push we need to make sure we don’t end the season like we did last year,” Hines said. “Last year we won Memphis and had a good lead in the championship points chase, but we didn’t perform well at the track in the last few events of the season. We need to make sure we change that this year. We don’t have the same points cushion and if we had not won four rounds today, the points would look a lot different.”

Not only did the team have to battle a competitive field of entrants, but massive heat waves, rain storms and race delays as well. Each professional team had just three opportunities to qualify instead of the usual four chances. Then, with the first round of eliminations nearly completed Sunday, the rain came and didn’t stop. The teams had to wait until Monday to see which competitors would rise to the top.

The Screamin’ Eagle team may have been prepared to face the competition on the track, but they weren’t faring nearly as well in the pits. Once the rains had cleared on Friday, the pit was soaked, the schedule was a mess and the crew’s feet were, well, a distraction.

“We were in the staging lanes, getting ready to race when the clouds erupted with a torrent of rain,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “There wasn’t anything we could do. The guys had to walk the bikes back to the pits through a major rain pour. Once the guys started to get back to work on the bikes, I went and bought everyone a pair of shoes. It was a little thing, but it made everyone a lot more comfortable and able to deal with the big issues of racing. Today they said those were our lucky shoes and if it means buying a new pair for the team every rain storm and delay, I just might do that.”

Paluso said that above all else, she’s proud of the way the Screamin’ Eagle crew managed to be the last team standing after a long weekend.

“The rain is one thing, the heat is another thing, the humidity was outrageous and it just zaps the energy out of everyone,” Paluso said. “This team was hot, they were miserable because of all of the schedule changes and delays and yet they kept making changes to the bikes to make sure they got down the track with competitive numbers. They were all superstars this weekend in the pits and they made winning this difficult race look easy.”

Hines qualified in the No. 4 position with a 7.091-second pass at 188.02 mph while teammate GT Tonglet qualified in the No. 7 position with a 7.138 pass at 186.79. It was the first time both riders had qualified in the top half of the field in the same event since the Columbus event in May.

“It felt so good to get back out to the track and make a good, clean, fast pass,” Tonglet said. “We didn’t qualify for the event in Brainerd last weekend and the entire team was consumed with making sure both V-Rods got down the track this time. We knew we had rain in the forecast, which meant we didn’t know how many opportunities we would have to qualify. We did it early and left the DNQ behind us for good.”

Tonglet lost to Ryan Schnitz and the Team Muzzy Buell in the first round of competition Sunday. Tonglet rode his V-Rod to a 7.241 run at 183.89, falling just short of Schnitz’ winning run of 7.237 at 182.45. While Tonglet’s .019 reaction time was quick in itself, Schnitz threw down the weekend’s best reaction time with a .003 to aid the round win.

Hines beat Geno Scali and the Performance Machine Suzuki team. Hines turned in a 7.196 at 185.10 to top Scali’s 7.262 at 183.54. In Round Two, Hines beat Chip Ellis and the G Squared Motorsports Buell team with a 7.081 at 186.95 over Ellis’ 7.172 at 183.02. Michael Phillips fouled at the starting line against Hines in the semifinals.

“There were so many tuning challenges thrown at our team this weekend,” Hines said. “When the conditions changed, we made great adjustments. When I short-shifted my gears in the first round, my dad went over a few things with me to make sure I corrected that. I also learned that the way I sit on the bike makes a big difference in my reaction times. It was so hot and so miserable all weekend and the team just sat at that computer and crunched the numbers and made all the right calls.”

Hines said one of the biggest accomplishments was beating Ellis in the second round.

“If we had lost to Chip, he would have passed me in the points and he’s with one of the best teams out here and we didn’t want to get behind him,” Hines said. “That was a tough field to get through this weekend and it seemed like the Screamin’ Eagle crew just got better as the day went on.”

With just four events remaining in the POWERade season, the two-time defending Pro Stock Motorcycle champion is determined not to repeat last season’s ending.

“This V-Rod is running so well,” Hines said. “The bike feels like it is running on a rail and that gives me confidence as a rider. The weekend was so rough on the team between the weather, delays and competition and yet we came out on top. Now we need that to carry over to the rest of the season no matter what the conditions are.”

The next NHRA event is the 52nd annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Aug. 31 – Sept. 4.

QUICK STURGIS REPORT AND CHECK CALIFORNIA HELMET LAW–Had a great ride to Sturgis and the Kids & Chrome event on Wednesday. Two back to back 13 hour days in the saddle used to be more fun, as my memory tells me. I guess my back isn’t what it used to be. Anyway, sorry I missed you out there.

CLUTCH LAW PASSED IN MISSOURI– Missouri Governor Matt Blunt has signed a bill that includes “Clutch’s Law,” in memory of John Michael “Clutch” Clubine, who was killed by an inattentive driver. The new law, which takes effect January 1, 2007, increases penalties for drivers who injure or kill others by committing right-of-way violations.

Clutch’s Law was passed after several years of effort by the AMA and Freedom of Road Riders. The law follows model legislation proposed as part of the AMA’s Justice for All campaign, and allows for additional penalties of up to $1,000 in fines and a drivers license suspension of up to 180 days, when someone is injured or killed, beyond the other fines for right-of-way violations. The AMA supported the Missouri legislation by issuing Action Alerts through the AMA Rapid Response Center and AMA Grassroots Manager Terry Lee Cook, a close friend of Clutch, personally testified on behalf of the legislation. The AMA launched the Justice for All campaign in response to numerous instances across the country in which drivers killed or injured motorcyclists and walked away with minor fines. In many cases, state laws do not provide for additional fines beyond a simple ticket for a traffic offense. The Missouri law addresses that potential injustice. Elsewhere, laws consistent with the Justice for All campaign have passed this year in Louisiana, Wisconsin, Georgia, Oklahoma, New Hampshire, Iowa, and West Virginia.

KEN CAMINITI’S LEGACY LIVES ON– I’m sorry that it’s been so long since my last e-mail you. Rest assured, the efforts to maintain Ken Caminiti’s legacy as a Padre is still an ongoing effort.Since Ken’s passing, Legacy 21 has made a commitment to ensure that the Padres retire Ken’s number 21. With your help and support, we can achieve this goal.

Our first effort, our letters to Dick Freeman, have made the Padres recognize that people want to see Ken Caminiti’s number retired. While Dick Freeman continues to work for the Padres, Sandy Alderson, has since been promoted to the President of the San Diego Padres. Legacy 21 also received an overwhelmingly positive response to the interview with Padres announcer Ted Leitner on his radio show.

Most recently, the MLB has launched a new contest, Hometown Heroes. Fans are asked to vote among five players for each franchise’s history. The Padres omitted Ken Caminiti from the ballot in lieu of the choices of Brian Giles, Trevor Hoffman, Randy Jones, Dave Winfield, and Tony Gwynn. Legacy21 has begun a write in campaign for Ken Caminiti. Gwynn will and should win this contest, but a strong showing of votes for Ken Caminiti will urge the Padres to reconsider on retiring 21. If you attend a MLB game, I encourage you to please write in a vote for Ken Caminiti for the Padres.

FIRST YEAR AT THE DRAGS–2005 was my first year on a AHDRA legal Prostock Bike and it was a good one. I won the AHDRA Western Divisionand placed 4th in nationally.

I’m currently running the same bike in the AHDRA Progas class and set a personal best time in Seattle of 7.93 at 161 MPHat the Friday test & tune session.

The next West Coast Race is August 26-27 at the Woodburn Race track in Oregon.

This new custom shop has shown quite a knack for being in the right place at the right time with a product many want to see more of.Building upon a reputation for affordable, highly dependable and unique custom choppers, Guilty Customs was able to have quite a showing at this years AMD World Championships with Lucille, their debut custom bike. Her name is from a line George Kennedy made famous in the 1967 movie “Cool Hand Luke”. “Anything so innocent and built like that just gotta be named Lucille”.

“While scanning the rows of bikes to consider for contention in the freestyle championship each time my eyes landed on “Lucille”, her lines and stance caused me to make a b-line to her to check her out” says John Persitza of Cook Customs. “Closer inspection revealed that she was not an exotic creation that was even interested in vying for top honors in a competition with one-of-a-kind motorcycles. Rather she was a home grown beauty that was comfortable with herself, and for her owner?.one that I would be proud to own and ride”. “In short, a beautiful attention getting bike?.and when I found out the price……my first thought was this guy is gonna be selling a lot of bikes” says Persitza.

Cook Customs, out of Milwaukee WI, is known for their cutting edge designs by Dave Cook winner numerous industry awards and featured in industry magazines such as American Iron and Barnett’s. Cook recently won Best in Show at the 2006 Milwaukee World of Wheels Show for the bike “Nikki” and placed 12th in the Freestyle Championships at Sturgis this year.

Kiwi Motorcycles’ Mike Tomas, (1st place winner in Production Class), was also impressed with the level of basic design concepts exhibited with Lucille. “Since Lucille was entered in the “Freestyle” class, she had a lot of competition right out of the box with builders such as Jesse Rooke Customs, Roland Sands, Krazy Horse Cycles and many others” says Tomas. “While she didn’t place this time, I believe Guilty will be a group to watch in the upcoming years”.

Guilty Custom’s CJ Hanlon, in attendance with Lucille at Sturgis had only one thing to say about the experience. “Awesome! This level of exposure for Guilty gives us the type of experience we need and a worldwide platform to show the public the types of bikes we’re able to build”. Guilty’s goal is to bring the chopper back to the people that made them popular, the everyday hard working man (and woman) who don’t have extensive bank accounts. “With the Starlett line starting at $27k, bikes like “Lucille” will be accessible to almost everyone” says Hanlon.

Ah, but what the hell. It’s all apart of the Bikernet Adventure, and I have Hamster Harlan to thank. He’s working with the Hamsters to raise some Bonneville expense funds. I was inducted back into the Hamsters this year. I had a 13 year stretch, then took a three year break. It’s a good group of people, and I’ve know many of the initial group for over 20 years. I rode with about 30 of them from the west coast to Strugis this year.

S&S? ANNOUNCES BRISK SALES OF SERVICE MANUALS–LA CROSSE, WI (August 15, 2006) S&S Cycle announces a very successful first year of sales for its Super Sidewinder? Plus and Super Stock?/Super Sidewinder service manuals.

S&S is known as the leader in the high-performance aftermarket, producing engines of the highest quality, reliability, and performance to be used in a variety of custom motorcycles and as replacements for American v-twin models. S&S engines and components. On August 9, 2006, S&S also announced plans to provide training classes for consumers. The Super Sidewinder Plus service manual, part #61-1000, is for the S&S 111, 117, and 124 cubic inch engines. The Super Stock/Sidewinder service manual, part #61-1001, is for the S&S 88, 96, 100, 107, and 113 cubic inch engines. The next service manuals to be released will include the popular SH-Series (shovelhead) and the T-Series (dual cam) engines. AVON TYRE QUESTION OF THE WEEK–Why do tires have a directional arrow on the sidewall?

The arrow indicates the direction in which the tire should be mounted on the wheel. When the tire is built the tread is joined with the tread overlapping in so that when the tire is mounted on the front wheel the braking forces acting on the tire keep the tread splice together and when it is on the rear wheel is it overlapped to work with the acceleration forces acting on the rear tire. If a tire is mounted incorrectly a tread splice can result.

“Talledega Nights” reteams Wurman with director Adam McKay, with whom he collaborated on on another Will Ferrell box-office hit, “Anchorman – The Legend of Ron Burgundy.”

Betwen the ballad and the legend, Wurman provided the score to Warner Independent’s National Geographic Film “March of the Penguins,” helping this film without dialog take the Oscar last year for Best Documentary Feature. That film has been certified as the second-highest grossing non-large format documentary in history.

Most people are willing to let me give them my speech about my nephews tragic accident and our efforts to help raise funds for him…others are just plain D_ck Heads and could care less…but I keep on plugging away.

S&S POWER CONTINUES TO PERFORM IN NHRA RACING– LA CROSSE, WI (August 14, 2006) S&S? powered bikes once again showed their Proven Performance? this weekend at the NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals in Brainerd, Minnesota. Seven S&S-powered bikes qualified; Chip Ellis had the lowest ET and qualified #1 with a 7.082 @ 187.76 mph. This was Ellis’ fifth #1 qualifying effort this season and his seventh overall during his NHRA career. Of the seven S&S-powered bikes that qualified, four of them were in the top half of the field. Tom Bradford qualified in the #4 position with a 7.119 ET, Matt Smith was in the #5 spot with a 7.131 ET, Chris Rivas qualified #7 with a 7.141 ET, Ryan Schnitz was #11 with a 7.168 ET, Matt Guidera was #13 with a 7.176 ET, and Marco Andreano qualified #15 with a 7.194 ET.

Ellis advanced to round two on his Drag Specialties/S&S Buell? but lost to Antron Brown despite a remarkable perfect reaction time of 0.000. Andreano, Schnitz, Bradford, and Smith joined Ellis in advancing to round two of eliminations on Sunday. Ellis is now #3 in the POWERade points, just 30 points behind Andrew Hines (#2) and 45 points behind the POWERade point leader, Antron Brown. Ellis is also leading the pack in the Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle.

Schnitz and Bradford went on to the semi-finals and lost to Antron Brown and Steve Johnson. Brown won the race against Johnson with a 7.108 ET @ 186.85 mph.

“Unfortunately we didn’t see one of the S&S-powered bikes win this weekend, but we competed favorably with the number of qualifiers and fast times against the Suzuki? and Harley-Davidson? motorcycles,” said Charlie Hadayia, Senior Manager of Racing & Customer Services for S&S Cycle. “We had seven teams qualify this week, compared to six teams at the last race, and once again Chip was in the #1 spot using the Proven Performance S&S engine. Tom Bradford also had the quickest pass this weekend in round two against Matt Smith. I’d like to congratulate all of the teams on their efforts this weekend, especially Ryan and Tom for advancing to the semis. It was also great to see Andreano advance to round two,” concluded Hadayia.

Five of the top ten POWERade point holders this season are using the Proven Performance S&S 160″ Prostock motorcycle engine. There are five NHRA events remaining this season for Prostock Motorcycle. The next event is the O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, Tennessee on August 18-20, 2006.

AUSTRALIAN DRAG REPORT–Here’s Gavin Cass’s twin cam during qualifying early in the morning. It has a stock swingarm, 8″ centerline wheel, as a 95″ made 135 hp on the dyno and ran 11.3’s on race fuel. Now out to 107″, lowered the compression so it runs on normal pump fuel. Makes around 120 hp now ran 11.77, 11.78, 11.78 on 11.75 dial in in Chicago shootout. Redlight on first pass ended his chance of taking home the marbles.

TEACHER TERRORIST ARRESTED–At New York’s Kennedy airport today, an individual, later discovered to be a public school teacher, was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

“Al-Gebra is a fearsome cult, “Gonzales said. “They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, “If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes.”

Hey, Wow, I just twisted through all my e-mails from Sturgis to create this news. Hopefully, I didn’t miss anyone. It’s going to be a hot blast from all over the country and world.

My Accurate 120-inch engine may roll into the shop today, and with any luck the bike will run this weekend. I’ll pick up my paint tomorrow and burn late nights firing her to life.

Let’s hit the news, my thoughts are scrambled regarding Sturgis, plans for Bonneville, and making our first Salt Flat attempt run.

DOWNUNDER VIETNAM VETS EVENT–On the 2nd September we have the annual Vietnam Vets poker run. Last year we got over 300 bikes. Probably small by comparison to a US run but consider this, we only have 100,000 people in district. That’s about 0.3% of the population in this area. If the same relationship was obtained in New York (22 Mil), it would like 66,000 bikes turning up.

Then 7th October the Rebels bike show is on which is another favourite event. Last year I was tickled to be asked to judge the bikes, rods and muscle cars for the club. Always a good day except for the obligatory police road block in the morning to take mug shots and record names. Take care from Down Under.

I think Gunny’s note in the same newsletter chiding those who drink and ride was better put than your position: with rights come responsibilities. If you want to ride, do it so that others aren’t hurt, killed or seriously annoyed.

IN THE WIND POKER RUN CHARITY RIDE–I have a large favor to ask…attached is a copy of a faxed flyer for the Denver Colorado 15th Annual “In the Wind Poker Run” Charity Ride supporting the Children’s Hospital of Denver Handicapped Sports Programs to be held Sept 16, 2006. Selfishly this is a program that my sister Carol Page administers for Children’s Hospital in Denver. This program supports all of the rehabilitation efforts of numerous illness children suffer through sports and recreational therapy’s.

Carol has administered this program since the early 1980’s and has been actively involved in its growth since her moving to Denver in the late 1960’s.

Currently their handicapped ski program in Winter Park hosts over 140 children every other weekend throughout the winter, and her activities also include golf, river rafting, tennis, hiking, fly fishing, airplane ride adventures, etc. which all contribute to allowing these severely handicapped children the opportunity to get joy in their lives, and make moves back into the mainstream of their communities.

There are numerous events throughout the year that support this program in addition to this motorcycle event including a “Ride The Rockies” bicycle race that was held several weeks ago, golf tournaments, charity dinners, etc., so any contributions you might make throughout the year will find its way to supporting this program.

This program currently is suffering from reduced contributions, and they need our help. I know we are all asked each week to contribute to another cause, and I understand if you cannot participate at this time, but I would ask if at all possible that you send any items that could be used for their raffle, auction, or silent auction, or even future charitable events (golf tourney, dinners, etc.). I do not know the statistics of this event but I do know that they have over 3-400 participants each year and it has been covered locally by TV and Radio each year as Children’s Hospital of Denver is a highly regarded institution within the community. Both the Denver Rockies Baseball and the Avalanche Hockey teams are heavily involved and contribute to this cause with both players, jersey’s, and tickets. Anything you could do for this charity would be appreciated…

The study you did with various rides, and conditions to determine and demonstrate the inability of auto drivers to hear an oncoming bike. Well done. It is guys like you who ride and write that make the “Man” realize that some of us can think and knock their teeth out….Thanks for stepping up over the years and showing the other side of Bikers.

I am a 51 year old Marine Vet, been riding since 1972 and when I was young I had every Easyriders issue out….until I did a bid in Leavonworth…hahahaha they wouldn’t let me keep them.

I am currently in Afghanistan, hunting the Taliban….and having a good old time doing it. I have one of those new 2006 Street Bobs sitting in my house in Tejas. Miss it, miss riding..but like you said…If we don’t fight for something we believe in then we deserve to get our asses kicked….

Bikernet Reveals Discovery Girls – On Bikes

We have all seen the Discovery motorcycle stuff. Here we have some of the ladies who participated in Motorcycle Women. These “girls” are not only good looking, have kick ass careers and know what they want in life, plus they love Choppers. What more would you want (besides their number and a date)! I bravely encountered them to ask the following questions ( yeah I know it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it),at a Cyber cafe somewhere in the World.

When they started popping up I felt like a kid who was meeting the parents on his first date. Needless to say my journalistic duty kept me glued to my seat, (and I felt like the luckiest dude in the place surrounded by babes). So yeah, they did cartwheels, went shopping, and had the cleanest bikes I’ve ever seen (on a long ride) but what the hell. They are ladies, and that’s what they do. So next time you see one of them on the road, before calling them chicks, remember, these girls have covered more miles in a week than most in a year.

They have paid their dues, but most important, they have found the meaning of brotherhood…I mean sistership and respect for one another. So read on, enjoy, and take it like a man.

BIKERNET: What do you ride?

QIAN: Technically I ride a 2002 Sportster.

BIKERNET: Why technically ?

QIAN: It looks nothing like a Sportster

BETSY: A 91′ Softail. I modified everything in ’97, so they call it a ” special construction”. It has an Evo motor with Delkron cases and S&S carb on a Paughco frame. Evo 3 cam, python 3 pipes, twisted spoke rims, a Le Pera custom seat, ape hangers, and a devil’s pitchfork sissy bar. The leathers I dressed her with are old bags and scraps collected in our travels.

BIKERNET: Wow ! It’s quite impressive when someone knows exactly what their bike has, more so, can I say a woman without sounding like a male chauvinist ?What made you start riding and why?

QIAN: I got involved in motorcycles when I met Betsy, my best friend. She was the first woman who I met who rode a motorcycle and I was so impressed and had so much fun riding on the back of hers that I decided to get my own.

BETSY: I’ve been riding all kind of bikes my whole life, but my first bike was bought at a girlfriends garage sale, a Honda 400. She needed the money and I wanted to help out. Not even knowing that riding it would become such a major part of my life.

BIKERNET: What have you done to the bikes (customize stuff) ?

QIAN: I have changed and rechanged everything on the bike but the engine. I have 18″ apes, stretched gas tank, thinner Le Pera seat, tall sissy bar (who isn’t on the bike anymore) chrome grips, chopped fenders, lowered.

BETSY: Oops.. I guess I already answered this question.. By the way I also defaced a fabulous ghost flame paint job and opted for flat black

BIKERNET: Yeah, Flat Black rules. How much fun was the Discovery ride actually was?

QIAN: The ride was exciting and a bit intimidating since it was my first trip cross country. I also had not ridden with anyone other than Betsy.

BIKERNET: So Hollister wasn’t a long ride? I bet it was close to the Discovery mileage.

QIAN: Hollister was my first long ride and by the time I was done with the DC show I was getting used to it, bugs and all.

BETSY: The ride was a lot of fun for me. life is a lot of fun for me! We were all under some sort of pressure since we all had expectations of what the experience would be and how the filming would turn out. Sometimes it was a test of patience and sometimes we lost control of that. But I can say I respect every person I rode with and the crew. The ride itself was almost perfect, the scenery, the weather, the “dance” of riding with new friends. Sometimes you don’t realize how cool an experience is until you look back at it. I feel really fortunate to have been part of all this.

BIKERNET: Leaving the fringe, shopping and general TV stuff aside, What can you say (or felt) about the ride that people did not get to see?

QIAN: I felt there was so much great footage that was left out due to whatever reason and time. The viewers didn’t get to see us really bond, the food fights, the wonderful conversations and the spectacular scenery. We laughed the entire time.

BIKERNET: I hear you, we felt the same way after the Discover Sturgis ride. I mean footage lost, the bond, the good time. No food fights though, but it’s a funny thought. Maybe a fist fight.

BETSY: What people didn’t get to see? The bullshit ! The vulgar language, the “R” rated activities. And thank God for good editing. My family thanks Chad for his tasteful efforts (Chad was the editor).

BIKERNET: So we missed the best stuff. like always, damn censors! Of all the shows yours was the coolest route of all. What was your favorite part of the trip, areas, places, roads, whatever?

QIAN: My favorite part of the trip was meeting these women and the tasty ribs in Ely Nevada.

BETSY: I loved Durango and the Four corners, plus all the trading posts out in the middle of nowhere.

BIKERNET: What do you do for a living and how is it connected to riding motorcycles ?

QIAN: I work as a photographer in Los Angeles…Sometimes I sell drugs to make ends meet (just kidding).

BIKERNET: So how is it connected to motorcycles? Besides being cheaper and more fun than a shrink?

QIAN: It’s not, It’s just plain fun.

BETSY: Also, as photographer and I shoot various types of subjects as work and as a hobby. I have been lucky enough to shoot many motorcycles events with my friend Genevieve Schmitt of Woman Rider.

BIKERNET: I’m pretty sure that the bond that formed during and after the ride was pretty strong, tell me about it? Would you do it again, or is another ride already planned?

QIAN: Claudia and Michelle came out to visit us for the Love Ride weekend and we all plan to get together and ride to Sturgis next summer.

BETSY: Besides what Qian said, I did some pretty strong bonds on the trip and I hope my friendship with this girls continues. I would definitely do it again, and I am working on doing exactly that.

BIKERNET: So I must assume you will visit us in the Black Hills ?Tell us what went on behind the cameras? I’m sure six ladies on bikes can stir some trouble?

QIAN: I plead the fifth….

BIKERNET: Ahh, Come on?

BETSY: On the grounds that I would embarrass everyone, I must also plead the 5th. But…The ribs were not the only tasty things in Ely!!!

BIKERNET: Does your significant other, if any, ride too ? What does he ride?

QIAN: I’m sin…

BETSY: I have no significant other, not even an insignificant other. Isn’t that sad ?

BIKERNET: That’s funny. I mean the insignificant part. So I’m leaving this one. I’m sure that our readers will be more than willing to become insignificant others. I will sell phone numbers for the right price.

What do you like, bike wise and style wise, any plans or dreams of a certain bike, or favorite builder to do it ?

QIAN: I like the way old choppers look, apes, raked out, springer front ends, tall sissy bars. I don’t like the new bikes with the bright colored paint jobs. I think the only color a bike should be is black !

BIKERNET: Wow ! Why don’t you just rip my heart out !!!

BETSY: My bike! The one I have now ! It took me three bikes to work up to what I’ve always wanted. This is it..

BIKERNET: It’s never it. Come on fess up?

BETSY: Well, I would like to rake the front end about 9 more degrees. Anyway, I see so many bikes around, but when I get back to mine, I always think it’s the most beautiful bike I’ve ever seen !

BIKERNET: Every year we see more and more women riding Harley’s, which I think is great and they look so good. What’s your perspective about it ?

QIAN: Everything in this society is male dominated, which is sad, but I am glad to see more and more women riding. It’s a lot of fun, in fact I think everyone should own a bike !

BIKERNET: Come on, not all is male dominated, how about hair dressers, interior decorators, oops, yep you are right, sort of?

BETSY: I love it. I used to feel like an oddity, a tanned women dripping in turquoise, kind of a 70’s lost child. But now it’s all hip again. If you keep your style it will come back around every 20 years or so. When I see another woman riding I know we have something in common. To some it’s more than a hobby, it’s an attitude about life. It’s a freedom thing.

BIKERNET: Power to the sista’s!! Yeah, I saw a lot of jewelry on the show, fringe and little clothing.You travel all over the World, tell us about cool places to visit and ride?

QIAN: I have only ridden in the US, but my photography has taken me all over the World. Mostly third world countries like Nepal, Tibet, Guatemala, Peru, Costa Rica and Morocco.I’ve experienced diving in Thailand, Aruba, Caymans and Bahamas. I just got my Sky diving license and plan on going to Queenstown New Zealand, the Adrenaline capital of the World, to make some jumps and ride…

BIKERNET: So many places and no Puerto Rico ? How can that be?

QIAN: I have actually been there.

BIKERNET: Ah ha ! I bet at the airport on the way to some other island.

BETSY: I’ve never ridden anything bigger than a moped in any other country. I dig adrenaline and adventure so I mix work and fun…Safaris in Africa, mountain climbing in Tibet, skiing in the Alps, bungee jumping in New Zealand, scuba in the Pacific and Caribbean islands, stuff like that. But most of the motorcycle travel has been 20 different ways to get from LA to Sturgis and back !

BIKERNET: This forum now belongs to you two, say what you want…gripes, kudos, anything ?

QIAN: I’ve learned that although chrome grips look really cool they serve, absolutely, no purpose going cross country, and in fact, I’ve already damaged my fingers from gripping so hard. Chrome won’t get you home.I have duct tape covering them and I don’t really care how ugly it looks. They are never coming off. And Jose is a babe.

BIKERNET: Try tennis racket grip tape. It works better and is less messy.

BETSY: People don’t see my quiet side. I spent most of my time in my own little “casa” in the garden, with my dogs, making jewelry and leather goods…

BIKERNET: So that explains all the accessorizing on the ride?

BETSY: Yep. I also try to have the healthiest body and soul lifestyle I can. I love good sleep, sunshine, good friends and most important a great family ! And Jose is a babe, too !!

BIKERNET: Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. I really hope this opens some eyes, ladies as well as gentlemen.

Deep inside it was all serious stuff, friendship, enjoyment and absorbing your surroundings. They watched each others backs (and we did too). But at the end the message was served, eaten and digested. Women riders are here to stay. They like the same things we do and enjoy their bikes as much. Only difference, they have some extra parts and look much better on their bikes than any guy.

Just back from Sturgis. Incredible week of wild rides, wicked women, not enough whiskey and ducking rain. I don’t know where to start or end. Hell, I don’t know what’s up? Hang on for a full report as we prepare for the run to Bonneville.

Rumor has it that my Accurate, 120-inch engine will be shipped today and arrive on Tuesday for final assembly. Let’s hope the Paint will arrive before and I’ll be ready for final tuning.

The news is super short today, since I’m still decompressing. We’ll be up to speed with constant features and more news in the next couple of days.

MOTORCYCLE NOISE ISSUE HEATING UP–A friend of mine forwarded the correspondence regarding motorcycle noise intrusions from legislators and I would like to join this fight!

I recently took my bike to the local H-D shop to get the Dyno tune up and noticed a flyer on the service departments counter indicating that they will no longer install or modify the exhausts of the motorcycles they service (of course they’ll sell the pipes, they just won’t install them). Now I’ve been back to riding for about 6 years now (with one of those recuperating from a nasty highway accident on my bike). So, one of the repairs I had done when putting my ride back together was to change the pipes from Scream’n Eagles to the Vans & Hines Pro Pipe. Since I changed that exhaust I have had a lot fewer cagers try to share the lane with me on the highway and also I went from 37mpg to 44mpg on the highway runs.

I must mention however, I was not big on the louder pipes and didn’t want to put them on at first. I thought the Scream’n Eagles were plenty to give me the rumble you don’t get from stock yet I didn’t feel they would be intrusive on others sharing the roads. I do a lot of my riding on the furthest roads away from people I can get and so I thought why put loud pipes since I’ll be the only ones hearing them. I have pretty loud air horns on my ride for those moments when you just have to let a cager know you are there. I found I wasn’t fast enough on the horn trigger. I changed the pipes to a little bit louder. It worked, I’ve had the new pipes for about two years now and I’ve had maybe two (cell talking) cagers try to run me over.

I strongly believe we need to be heard. I do not however believe in some of these pipes that are just too loud and I don’t care for those bikers that feel they need to be heard up to five miles away. But then there are those in every group, culture, religion, ethnicity, etc…

Would you please help me to get involved with this fight. I am an AMA member, however, I don’t know if there are any local meetings in my San Jose, CA area. Granted I joined just this last year so I could ride and participate in the Women’s Motorcycle Conference that went on in Athens, Georgia this last month. But I figure I’m a member now and they’re supposed to be helping with motorcycle rights, so what else can I get out of being AMA. I looked up the ABATE website and read a few of their news letters and feel that they are still wrapped up in the helmet law. Don’t get me wrong about the helmet law, I feel we should have a choice to wear or not to wear, BUT, when the horse is dead you don’t keep trying to ride it. So if you could hook me up with a group that is actually trying to save what rights we still have, I’m in.

Sorry for the length, I’m very passionate about trying to keep what we still have and not to loose any more of our rights. In spite of that Willie and his Corporation telling us to back down on the noise issue. So, I’m reaching out (something I rarely do) and asking for help.

It was a top four Japanese Cruiser Motorcycle company supported, controlled circulation magazine from Elhert Publications in Ventura, California. “Our last issue will be Nov. 06, which we are closing now. It was, of course, quite a shock and took us all by surprise and no one can make much sense of it.

“Anyway, sir, if you know of anyone who has need for an editor/writer/photographer, little crazy but has an old school work ethic, let me know,” Josh Placa.

Sturgis, SD- Billy Lane’s efforts and organization paid off August 8th in Sturgis South, Dakota. Billy and 29 of his master motorcycle building friends came together to raise money for Kids & Chrome. And that they did.

“We set our goal early on to raise about $5,000 by selling about 200 tickets for Kids & Chrome. Then “Bam” out of nowhere, this event took on a life of its own and turned into the most amazing morning in Sturgis” explained Lane. “The night before we had already sold over 400 tickets”.

“Everyone at my shop was so honored that I was asked to participate with Billy and all of the other remarkable builders at this event, we couldn’t wait to do it. When I got there and saw the entire block lined up with people waiting to buy tickets, and hundreds already inside, I knew Lane had done it; he made history today” said Brian Klock.

Lane and his Choppers Inc. crew set out to produce an event where anyone could come and spend a couple of hours with the world’s most well known builders over breakfast sponsored by Bikernet.com. The event was announced late spring for a date of August 8th, builders were personally invited to attend by Lane. Throughout the course of planning the event it grew to the point of having a list of builders waiting for a position. “I was still receiving calls from builders wishing to donate their time up until the day before the event. Each and every builder stepped up to plate to pull this off. Not only did they donate time, they provided amazing prizes for the ticket holders. We received signed clothing, jackets, parts and more from every participant. Some of the parts from guys like Jim Nasi, Scott Webster and Kendall Johnson were over the top. The guests that won them were so excited, it was like Christmas. The lucky winner out of Las Vegas that won a Sara Liberte portrait of himself with Arlen Ness couldn’t believe how his morning turned out” said Darcy Betlach, consultant to Billy Lane.

The 1st Annual Billy Lane Builders Bike took place Tuesday, August 8th at 9AM at the world famous Broken Spoke on Lazelle St. The event generated well over its original goal of $5,000. Prior to tallying all of the additional donations made Tuesday and Wednesday, the event raised over $13,000 for kids in South Dakota.

Moving forward there will be much improvements made to better accommodate the interest. During this first annual event, there was a slight food shortage that was corrected on site and shade shortage from the 105? heat for the guests and builders. Next year the event will plan for more guests and builders, but wants to THANK everyone that came to the first annual plus the sponsors that took such great care of everyone, Dodge, Custom Chrome, Budweiser, Renegade, House of Kolor, Activision, Choppers Inc, Broken Spoke Saloon, Xtreme Wheels, Dave Nichols the event Emcee and last but not least Chalor Cross for all of the amazing food. IT’S A QUICK WRAP–I’m still reeling from the run home. We crashed a road King after peeling through over 640 miles. It happened on a San Pedro residential street as Kyle thought he was passing a parking car. At the last minute the car hung a left towards their driveway and over the hood he flew. What a way to end a week of riding in the rain, dodging deer and 90 mph speeds.

Next week we’ll hit the site hot and heavy with reports on the Bonneville builds, bike features and the wild shots from the Girls of Bikernet booths in Thunder Road and Hard Bikes on Lazelle.

Boring Thursday News–That is unless you?re interested in new products, Screamin Eagle Racing news and jokes. Now, if I were to begin the news with what?s going on with me like Bandit does, then you would be bored. Runaway teenagers, dog adoptions, fridge cleaning and waiting on contractors fill my days. Yawn.

But since you asked; most of the custom cabinets have been installed but we had to wait for replacement planks for my century old Douglas fir floor to install the rest. When we pulled out the carpet, we discovered that we did have hardwood floors throughout the top level. Interestingly, when this building was originally built, they laid the floor continuously then built the walls. Most of it is good enough for a sand and finish but we found a few cut-outs and some termite damage, hence the replacement planks. They deliver 10 ea – 10? planks tomorrow. They have to sit for three days to acclimate to the humidity then they can do all the repair work.

We also found a strip of linoleum tiles that was the original hallway. My daughter and I take turns with a scraper and heat gun to remove it row by row. I figure we have about three days left to go at four rows each per day.

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE WRECKING CREW TAKES FOUR OF THE TOP 10 SPOTS AT HAGERSTOWN–
Coolbeth Leads Screamin’ Eagle Riders with Second Place Finish
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (July 31, 2006) – Kenny Coolbeth fought all night to become the first repeat winner of the 2006 AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Twins championship season. The Screamin’ Eagle rider battled Saturday with current points leader Chris Carr throughout most of the race. Carr won the two-bike battle and the race to become the first man to stand on the top of the podium more than once.

Coolbeth finished second while factory teammate Rich King finished fourth. Wrecking crew teammates Jared Mees (Texter Harley-Davidson) and Bryan Smith (Pat Moroney’s Harley-Davidson) finished fifth and seventh, respectively, at the 25th Silver Annual Hub-City Classic in Hagerstown.

“This is the second consecutive season that I’ve been the runner-up at Hagerstown,” Coolbeth said. “I guess I have to wait another year to break that streak and win the event. It was a good race, I just came up a little short at the very end. Carr is a great rider and he did everything he could to keep me from moving around him.”

Coolbeth moved back into second place in the standings, just 12 points behind Carr and the Quality Pre-Owned Ford Harley-Davidson team. With just four races remaining in the season the Screamin’ Eagle team knows every point is extremely valuable.

“It’s going to be a fight to the finish,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “It will come down to the wire and it looks like the champion won’t be crowned until the final lap of the season. It’s going to be a hard fought championship chase and we’re pleased to have Screamin’ Eagle riders in the race for the series crown.”

This is the third time this season that Coolbeth has finished in the top three. It was the first time in the last three events that all four Wrecking Crew members qualified for the main event and finished in the top 10.

“We’re very pleased the Wrecking Crew all finished in the top 10 this week,” Paluso said. “Hopefully we can earn a few more podium finishes before the season is over. The teams are working so well together, so we know it’s possible.”

Joe Kopp and the Latus Harley-Davidson team earned the victory in Greenville, Ohio, two weeks ago. Carr, Dominic Beaulac and the Lombardi Harley-Davidson team, Coolbeth and the Screamin’ Eagle team, Mike Hacker and the Doc’s Harley-Davidson team each have one victory this season. The event at Syracuse, N.Y., was canceled after qualifying because of lighting and will not be rescheduled.

The next AMA Flat Track GNC Twins event is Saturday at Farley Speedway in Farley, Iowa.

New Men’s Diet: — I have a Labrador retriever & I was buying a large bag of Purina at Wal-Mart and was waiting in line to check out. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog (?). On impulse, I told her that no, I was starting The Purina Diet again. Although I probably shouldn’t, because I’d ended up in the hospital last time I tried it.

But that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry & that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again.

I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story, particularly a tall guy who was behind her. Horrified, she asked if I’d been poisoned. I told her no; I’d been sitting in the street licking my balls and a car hit me.

I thought the tall guy was going to have to be helped out as he laughingly staggered to the door.

S&S COMMENDS EPA CERTIFICATION PROGRAM–LA CROSSE, WI (August 3, 2006) S&S is pleased to announce that the EPA has recently released the ?Certification Procedure for Highway Motorcycle Engines.?

Following a year of successful efforts between the EPA and MIC (specifically, the MIC American V-Twin Committee, www.mic.org/vtwin.cfm?pagename=vtwin), document CISD-06-15 (MC) was released by the EPA on July 25, 2006. Drafted to allow the certification and sale of highway motorcycle engines to individuals, dealers, and small volume motorcycle manufacturers, the Certification Procedure permits certified engines installed in new highway motorcycle chassis to be operated or re-sold without restriction (provided the requirements of the procedure, as well as the federal Clean Air Act anti-tampering requirements, are met). ?With the original provision allowing only one non-compliant custom bike to be built in an individual?s lifetime, the EPA, with help from the MIC, S&S Cycle, and other industry leaders, has done a fantastic job of looking out for the best interest of the individual customers, dealers, and small volume manufacturers that make up our industry. Customers can now buy or build numerous emissions-compliant motorcycles, without having the worries of certifying or submitting paperwork to the EPA. I?m very excited to know consumers have options available to them, and that they won?t be constrained by the provisions originally established in 2003,? said S&S Engine Controls Group Engineer, Tom Henline.

Referring to an exemption documented in the EPA?s adoption of new emission standards for highway motorcycles in December 2003, the Certification Procedure will no longer limit individuals from building one highway motorcycle over their lifetime. Nor will the EPA?s 2003 emission standards exemptions limit the elaborate custom motorcycles that are created for display by collectors to 24 units per model year per builder. Said builders will now be able to purchase and install certified engine packages without the previous quantity limitation.

Declared Vice President of Product Development, Scott Sjovall, ?It?s great to have had a unified and accepted goal for our industry, an objective that was met by the EPA releasing the Certification Procedure. It?s been a pleasure to work with the EPA, MIC, and American V-Twin member companies; as well as Tom Austin from Sierra Research.?

I suppose I ought to explain something: For some obtuse reason, I feel I put alittle too much effort into a painting to simply dash off, leaving theviewer with a quick explanation of what is surface-level obvious. Nope… Ifigure I’d rather torture myself by doing two things at the same time;first, plumb my soul to come up with something truly powerful, and second,for it to have a character of personal uniqueness that appropriatelytranslates what I am saying with the piece. Something that causes inplaybetween artist and viewer. Yeah, that’s it. Push things in an interestingdirection.

At times, dragging out the name can be tough — I don’t get them for free.The process can be scary as hell. After all, painting is a black hole, acompression of many different emotions; pain, misery, elation, exploration– so why not reach deep within those personal depths to name the piece? Maybe I could have gotten poetic andwinged off something like “Windblown Wavelets and Reflective Cud-Chewing”,but I’d be afraid that naming it so would be a case of anything meaninganything and nothing at the same time…

No, whatever I had to say about my painting had to say something about ALLof the painting. It had to say something about the machine. The flag. Thestone-faced riders with attitude — no, pride. The drama. I want to saysomething about one thing. I want to say something about everything. It hadto say speak BEYOND the painting. I wanted it to address something Iresponded to when I conceived the image — the PASSION. And I wanted it tospeak to the culmination of 100 years of what “IT” was all about — andspeak to what it will be.

So, I sat and stared at it for a while. Just like I did when it was a whitecanvas… except not as nervous (because I didn’t have to think how manyways I could destroy a perfectly clean, white canvas). A thought… scribbleit down and wait for the next candidate to appear. Then scribble that down.Flail myself for the next one and scribble that down.

Slowly, a list was compiled and reviewed. And there,in the midst of a long line of drunks, dropouts and derelicts, it shone:”Great Doings”.

AMERICAN BIKER PARTY ROARED INTO POLITICAL ARENA–The Wisconsin-based third party is not shy about its origins: five bikers fed up with the way the government operates. Its membership includes doctors and other professionals, and people who steer clear of motorcycles.

Party leaders want voters to have a say in politics and have the government operate based on the ideals set forth by the country’s founding fathers in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.

“I always voted, but when I went to the polls, I didn’t have a lot of excitement or hope,” said member Pete Schultz, 40, of Marshfield. “This is an idea that is going to catch on.”

The party was co-founded this year by Steven “Mad” Erato, but the Vietnam War veteran said he had considered the new political party for years. Erato said he was disgusted by the poor quality of health insurance provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and cuts to the program in recent years.

Erato, 55, of Neenah served in Vietnam for the U.S. Army from 1971 to 72. He said he is listed as 100 percent disabled because of post-traumatic stress disorder.

“The guys in the Gulf War, they are people who had jobs and family already,” Erato said. “If they have a family and worked at the average factory or mill, they will find the (Veterans Health Administration) insurance is much worse than when they had a job.”

The party’s platform, developed at its convention earlier this month, is: affordable health care for everyone; the restoration of civil liberties by ending the Patriot Act; improved employment for Americans; providing strong support and funding to the military; and supporting the Bill of Rights as it was written, not as interpreted by the courts.

The American Biker Party does not plan to run candidates for office in the near future, but rather to support existing politicians or challengers. The party is interviewing local, state and national political candidates to see who best supports the party’s initiatives.

JERRY MAGNUSON REPORT–As for the “story notion,” I think Jerry Magnuson won one of the bike awards at the Queen Mary show. I know it was a supercharger guy because I spoke with him. Have to find my notes. He sold the company to B&M. Then Eaton got involved. There’s also a Magnuson Products that sells blower.

I also found a 1995 article about a Magnuson blower and guess what? It was for the ’94 T-Bird I own. And boy it needs a blower. Get me one and I’ll write the story, okay?

WE?RE ROLLING–We?ve packed some, charged our digital camera batteries, grabbed a note book for the Sturgis story and started packing tools. The list is a page long and getting longer. The King tanks are full, we checked the oil in the 2003 and took a lesson on operating the 2007 King stereo with XM. There was some discussion about removing the windshield from the new bike, but we decided to run one with the shield and the other without.

BIKERNET PRODUCT OF THE WEEK–ATTACHED is an image that I want to use to make (QUANTITY 4) decorative steelpieces to install on 4 horseshoe pit backboards at my rental properties. I thought itwould be nice to have this design on the backboards. Whatever material you use…has to be strong enough to handle a horseshoe flying through the air and hitting it(.12 thickness is what I’m thinking)…and also has to handle the SUN and WINTER, because these 4 pieces will be installedoutside.

They can look old and rustic looking… that’s fine… the edges don’t have tobe perfectly smooth… neither does the surface. Smooth is fine… but it doesn’t haveto be. These decorative pieces will SET THE MOOD when playing horseshoes.COLOR: I may prime and paint them BLACK or white… I’m undecided right now.

One company said to use Hot Rolled Steel. I don’t know what that is. I just wantsomething thick that’s strong and looks good. I will attach these to the backboardsusing screws. Something THAT WON’T RUST… and can handle all weather conditions.

The material I will be attaching the 4 pieces to (The horseshoe pit backboard) istreated pine. I may someday paint the treated pine WHITE and paint the designsyou create BLACK or DARK RED to match the homes shutters. Another ideais to stain the pits ROSEWOOD RED and prime and paint the designs you makeSHINY WHITE. For now… I have to leave the wood greenish to dry out beforepaint will absorb into the wood properly.

Question of the week:How much can tires grow and what to watch out for?

Tires can grow up to 7% in the first 200 miles so you need to leave clearance between your fender and the tire. Also take into account that clearance might look fine with no one sitting on the bike but as soon as you sit on it clearance can be reduced. And if you go over a pothole and the suspension compresses you will have even less clearance. Many of the big fat custom tires nowadays grow very little (1-2mm/ 1/32) but it is best to allow a good 1/2 inch if you can (13mm).

Tire pressure should be checked with the tire is cold before you start out on your ride. If after an hour of riding you see more than a 4-6 lb rise (or roughly 10%) the tire pressure needs to be increased, the load reduced, or the speed reduced as the tire is working too hard and will wear prematurely.

It’s also important to buy an accurate gauge. Pencil gauges get banged around and are often incorrect. Even expenisve gauges should be calibrated at least once a year. A good rule of thumb is to compare your gauge reading with your friends’ gauges to see if yours is still accurate. You may be faithfully checking your tire pressure but if your gauge is wrong your tire will run underinflated and tire mileage will suffer. Check tire pressure before every ride and you will be amazed how many more miles you get to enjoy on the same tire.

WOMEN WORKING ON THE SALT SHAKER–While I’m cutting a dusty trail for Sturgis the girl who created the above art, Yvonne Mecialis, will be working on the Salt Shaker tank and side panels. She will transfer Chris Kallas’ art into her own style on the V-Bike. Hang on, we’re going to document the process and final outcome when we return.

Yvonne didn’t hang up the paint process. We just delivered the base coated sheet metal to her yesterday.

JAY SPRINGSTEEN INJURED–Legendary dirt tracker Jay Springsteen is recovering nicely from injuries suffered in a Saturday night dirt track incident, his wife said on Tuesday morning.

In a phone call from Ohio, Judy Springsteen said her husband was flirting with the nurses in front of her and cracking jokes with his doctors, both of which sees as positive signs that he’s getting back to his usual self.The Bartel’s Harley-Davidson / SuperTrapp / Rock Springs rider continues to recover in Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio where he was taken after suffering multiple injuries during his heat race in Saturday night’s Greenville, Ohio AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship half-mile.

The three-time Grand National Champion suffered multiple thoracic fractures and left rib fractures. Doctors inserted three pins and a rod into the top of his one damaged vertebrae and a pin below it. Judy Springsteen said he has very little memory of the accident.Before he went into surgery, he jokingly asked his doctors, “Are you going to put American or metric in my body?”

Judy Springsteen reports that he’s in good spirits and that “he’s doing well, he wants to get up,” and that he’s waiting for his body cast, also known as a ‘turtle.’ He’ll have to wear the body cast for two months and the total recovery time will be about six months, she said, which means his race season is over.”The next time you’ll see him is at the Daytona road race tracks,” she said.

His release from the hospital will depend on how easily he can move around with the body cast. Once he’s comfortable, he’ll be transported back to his home in Lapeer, Michigan.

PLANE TAKE-OFF MISHAP CLAIMS WYATT FULLER AND “FLYING FOSSIL”–The name, “Flying Fossil,” was a jaunty thumb in the eye of the plane’s age, but the F-86 Sabrejet fighter was restored to like-new condition throughout. Despite that, it remained a 1950s aircraft, with 1950s technology; and jets of that time had a safety record unlike their modern descendants.

That safety record is a hair worse today, after the vintage fighter crashed and burned on takeoff at 11:40 AM Monday, killing pilot Wyatt Fuller.

The plane, N86FS, crashed on takeoff. Media reports from the scene indicate that witnesses saw the plane begin its takeoff run and rotate, but never leave the runway. It went off the end of the runway at high speed and crashed and burned, coming to a stop on a road hundreds of feet from the departure end of the runway. Local firefighters responded quickly, but the plane was fully aflame by the time they arrived. Despite their efforts, the plane, apart from its peripheries, was consumed by fire.

Fuller intended to fly to Oshkosh, WI and display the plane there during AirVenture 2006. The airplane would probably have had full fuel for cross-country flight.

The F-86 was fully restored, even to the (non-functioning) machine guns. It was kept polished to gleaming perfection, and painted in a bright trim scheme with colorful stripes. The F-86 is important historically as the most significant US fighter of the Korean War.

Fuller, known as an enthusiast for all kinds of high-performance machinery, has a full schedule of air shows booked. In the aftermath of his mishap, the website for his airshow act was off the air.

He was an experienced warbird pilot, and owner of an AT-6, an L-39, the F-86, and an A-4 Skyhawk that was a restoration-to-airworthy-status project. A former Braniff captain, Fuller has worked as a subcontractor and design consultant for Harley-Davidson, offered his own line of custom motorcycles, and was also well-known in hot rod and custom car circles for his unusual projects.

BIKERNET APPLE FARMS–A man is riding down a country road when he sees a sign, “Apples $5.00 each.” Intrigued to find out why an apple should cost that much, he stops and asks the farmer why the apples are so expensive.

The farmer says, “These are special peanut butter and jelly apples. Here, try one.”

The man takes a bite and says, “Unbelievable; I taste the peanut butter but not the jelly.”

The farmer says, “Turn it around.” He does and he savors a sweet jelly.

The farmer says, “I’ve got ham and cheese apples, too, but they’re $10.00 each.”

The man is excited, buys one, takes a bite and says, “Wow, these are great but I taste the ham but not the cheese.”

The farmer says, “Turn it around.” He does, takes a bite and a rich, creamy cheese taste fills his mouth.

The farmer says, “Now, if you really like those, I’ve got some very special apples that cost $50.00 each. They’re pussy apples.”

The man cannot resist and buys one. He takes a bite and says, “YUCK, these taste like shit!”

JARED MEES CLAIMS PODIUM FINISHES FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON WRECKING CREW IN OHIO–GREENVILLE, Ohio (July 24, 2006) – For the second consecutive weekend Jared Mees made a sharp climb up the points ladder in AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Twins championship series. Mees led the way for the Screamin’ Eagle Wrecking Crew Saturday, finishing in second place at the Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Ohio.

Another podium finish – just one week after his victory in Saluda, Va., — moved Mees up from fifth to second place in the GNC Twins point standings. Mees and the Texter Harley-Davidson/ Screamin’ Eagle team had the No. 9 position just two weeks ago.

“Overall it wasn’t a great race for us because we should have won,” Mees said. “But at the end there was a red flag on the track and (Joe) Kopp got ahead of me on the restart and went on to win. That just shows that you can go from penthouse to outhouse pretty quick.”

Mees qualified first in his heat and earned the No. 1 qualifying position for the main event before finishing second for the night. Kopp rode his Latus Harley-Davidson sponsored ride to the event victory.

“We want to do everything we can to keep the momentum rolling,” Mees said. “(Tuner) Johnny Goad has this bike running so well and we need to battle (points leader) Chris Carr and do whatever we can to challenge him for the championship.”

Factory-supported Screamin’ Eagle riders Rich King and Kenny Coolbeth did not have nearly the same positive results this weekend. King did not qualify for the main event for the second consecutive weekend while Coolbeth finished in seventh place. The fourth rider in the Wrecking Crew – Bryan Smith and the Pat Moroney’s/ Screamin’ Eagle team – suffered a broken bike before the race started and finished in 18th place for the night.

“It was a tough weekend for the Screamin’ Eagle team,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “We approach every race with hopes that all four Wrecking Crew riders can not only qualify, but finish in the top five. That wasn’t the case this weekend and I think it’s a good thing there isn’t too much time before the next event. The teams can regroup quickly and get ready for the next race without having to dwell on Greenville for too long.”

Kopp became the sixth different rider to claim a victory in as many races this season. Points leader Chris Carr and the Quality Pre-Owned Ford Harley-Davidson team, Dominic Beaulac and the Lombardi Harley-Davidson team, Coolbeth and the Screamin’ Eagle team, Mike Hacker and the Doc’s Harley-Davidson team along with Mees and Kopp each have one victory this season. The event at Syracuse, N.Y. was canceled after qualifying because of lighting and will not be rescheduled.

The next AMA Flat Track GNC Twins event is Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown, Maryland.
