PINK PLASTIC FLAMINGO FACES EXTINCTION–The day Mayor Dean Mazzarella turned 40, he got a surprise. “After I woke up and went out for my morning run, I came back and there were 40 pink flamingos in my front lawn,” Mazzarella recalled. “Someone had put them there as a joke.”
Now that he’s 49 – “the same age as the pink flamingo,” he notes – he hopes both he and the iconic lawn ornament that his city claims as its own will still be around next year to celebrate 50.
But the original version of the plastic flamingo may be singing its swan song after inspiring countless pranks – and being alternately celebrated as a tribute to one of nature’s most graceful creatures and derided as the epitome of American pop culture kitsch.
Union Products Inc. stopped producing flamingos and other lawn ornaments at its Leominster factory in June, and is going out of business Nov. 1 – a victim of rising expenses for plastic resin and electricity, as well financing problems.The small privately held firm has been in talks with a pair of rival lawn ornament makers interested in buying the molds and resuming production of the flamingos, designed in 1957 by local son Don Featherstone.
“We think the flamingo will go on,” Keith Marshall, Union Products’ chief financial officer, said at the company’s aging brick factory, where just a few years ago more than 100 employees churned out flamingos by the millions.Just a couple workers were still around to wrap up business. At the front desk stood a lone flamingo with the words “Happy 50th birthday” written with a black marker on the side, symbolizing hope that the flamingo will rise phoenix-like from the ashes to be reborn.
“I don’t think the pink flamingo is dead at all,” said the mayor of the city. “But whatever happens, he was born here – that can’t be taken away from us.”

AVON TYRES QUESTION OF THE WEEK–Did you ever feel like you are literally watching dollar bills fly out the back of your bike as your tire wears down. Listed below are some contributing factors.
Speed
“Speed Kill” – at least in tire life. The faster you go the harder your tire works and the hotter the temperature of the tread gets. Slow down a little and enjoy the scenery and you’ll be surprised by your increased mileage. Good tire pressure will also help gain more miles on your tire.
Road Surface
Rough road surfaces will punish your tire and lead to a shorter life span. Some road surfaces like the ones in Alaska have shale which are like riding on glass shards. And in Florida the roads have a mixture of fine shell which cuts into the tires and again shortens tire life span.
Temperature
YOu may have noticed your tires get better mileage in spring and fall than summer. This is because the temperature of the road in the summer (especially in states like Arizona, New Mexico) gets very hot and again affects the life of the tire. Again tire pressure is critical in this goal to achieving more mileage.

HALLOWEEN JOKE OF THE YEAR–An extremely modest woman was in the hospital for a series of tests,the last of which had left her bodily systems extremely upset. Upon making several false alarm trips to the bathroom, she decided the latest episode was another false alarm and stayed put. She suddenly filled the bed with diarrhea and was embarrassed beyond her ability to remain rational.
In a complete loss of composure she jumped out of bed, gathered up the bed sheets, and threw them out the hospital window.
A drunk was walking by the hospital when the sheets landed on him. He started yelling, cursing, and swinging his arms violently trying to get the unknown things off, and ended up with the soiled sheets in a tangled pile at his feet.
As the drunk stood there, unsteady on his feet, staring down at the sheets, a hospital security guard, (barely containing his laughter), who had watched the whole incident, walked up and asked,”What the heck is going on here?”
The drunk, still staring down replied, ” I think I just beat the shit out of a ghost. “

HINES RIDES SCREAMIN’ EAGLE V-ROD EVENT WIN EN ROUTE TO TAKING OVER NHRA PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE POINTS LEAD–LAS VEGAS (Oct. 29, 2006) – Andrew Hines and the Screamin’ Eagle/ Vance & Hines V-Rod Harley-Davidson team now like The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. They really don’t have a reason not to like it now. Sunday was that good for the team.
Hines rode his way back into the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle points lead with a victory Sunday during the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals. Hines started the event with a 27-point gap between him and first place rider Antron Brown.
Hines is leaving the event with a 37-point lead and his first career Las Vegas victory.
“This has not been one of my favorite tracks because the last two years we blew up the engine in the early rounds when we were leading the points with a championship on the line,” Hines said. “But I think the casinos are going to love our team tonight because I think we’re all happy about breaking that streak. This was a great weekend for the entire team.”
Hines faced teammate GT Tonglet in the final round. It’s the first final round appearance for Tonglet since the Memphis event in August 2005.
The runner-up finish also helped Tonglet move back into the top 10 in the NHRA point standings.
“We had one goal in mind for the last two races and that was to get back into the top 10,” Tonglet said. “We’ve struggled a bit this season but we’ve made some good strides lately and this was such a good weekend for both bikes. It’s a relief to be back in the top 10 and now we have to do what it takes to keep it through the last race of the season.”
Tonglet beat Chip Ellis in the first round with a 7.228-second pass at 182.60 mph over Ellis’ red-light foul at the starting light. He beat No. 1 qualifier Shawn Gann in the second round with a 7.352 at 178.57 over Gann’s red light. Tonglet then beat Geno Scali in the semifinals with a 7.191 at 184.95 over Scali’s foul.
Hines topped Tom Bradford in the first round with a 7.088 at 188.44 over Bradford’s red light foul. Hines moved on to beat former points leader Antron Brown with a 7.151 at 186.00 over Brown’s foul before he beat Ryan Schnitz with a 7.126 at 187.42 to Schnitz’s foul.
Hines earned his third win in five final rounds this season and seventh career victory with a track record pass. Hines recorded a record 7.080 pass at 188.65 to take the win over Tonglet’s 7.310 at 181.91.
“Las Vegas has been a tough city for us,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “We’ve struggled there and we knew we could not let that happen this time. This was such a successful turnaround compared to the last few years here and it’s a great way to be able to head into the final race of the season.
“We wanted to be in the position to run for the championship at the season finale and we did that this weekend. The team has worked very hard to make it all happen and both riders did their jobs too.”
Hines gave credit to Terry Vance, his mentor and dad’s friend in partner in racing for more than 30 years.
“Terry talked to me a lot and really hammered the point about being inside a box before making each run,” Hines said. “He’s been so instrumental in helping me become a better rider at the starting line and I think it made the difference this weekend.”
Now Hines is looking to earn his third championship in less than five years of professional drag racing.
“Right now we’re clawing tooth and nail to get every point we can,” Hines said. “You have to be on your best game, especially this time of year, because everyone is aiming for the final race wins and the championship.”
The last time Hines got past the first round at this track was 2003. This year, he’s leaving happy.
“The bike ran so well all weekend, it was on a rail,” Hines said. “The best pass of the day came in the final round and that was good enough for the track record. The team made an extraordinary effort. My dad (team owner Byron Hines) was so proud of the crew and what they all accomplished this weekend.”
The season finale of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing series is the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona (Calif.) Raceway, Nov. 9-12.

OREGON PAC STEPS UP–Last Friday, October 20th, the Oregon Governor?s Advisory Board forMotorcycle Safety had the final deliberations of the Motorcycle SafetyFoundation’s request to offer DMV skills test waivers. The AdvisoryBoard was originally charged by the Oregon Traffic Safety Commission(OTSC) to evaluate the proposal and issue a recommendation. Hearings anddeliberations have been ongoing for over a year. After a full andthorough hearing the committee has unanimously recommended that thestate of Oregon not accept the MSF program as an approved course for DMVskills waiver.
This meeting, postponed from September 15th, dealt with the operationsside of MSF’s proposal. Despite the fact that this was the last chancefor the MSF to speak to its case, no one from the MSF showed up at thismeeting. Even Betsy Earls the MSF attorney in Oregon was not inattendance. There was one woman present who stated she was CounselorEarls? assistant.
There was no public testimony taken, there was only a report from ODOTTransportation Safety Division Director Troy Costales. Under Oregonstatute they are required to produce an Operational Impact Statement.According to ODOT, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation never produced abusiness plan, despite numerous requests for such a plan. Mr. Costalesstated that as recently as a few weeks ago that a written request to MSFwas made for this plan but no answer was received. Without therequested information from MSF, ODOT was forced to produce a veryambiguous report.
Other issues were raised regarding the operations ofthe request from MSF. For example, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’soriginal proposal stated that no funds would be requested from ODOT. Yetduring the slideshow presented by Dr. Ochs, it was stated that fundswould be requested. MSF?s representative was given the opportunity tospeak and the representative from the MSF present stated that she didn?tthink she was authorized to speak for the MSF.
The OTSC meeting that will take up this issue is Tuesday, November 28that 9:00AM in Salem. The meeting is usually held at the TransportationSafety Division office. Confirmation of this will follow at a later time.

STEALTH REPORTS FROM BOOZEFIGHTERS’ NATIONAL MEETING–I made it back from Texas. I was at the BoozeFighters Natrional meeting last weekend and I had a great time. It was cool to see the museum. It is packed with history. There are some real old magazines, racing jerseys, helmets etc. It is a real honor to be a part of it.
Back here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS we are working on a couple of projects. The rigid Evo is almost finished. We are busy planning a shop bike that will be for sale. The weather has been good although kinda cool but it is fall. The bike nights are coming to an end until next spring. It is hard to believe it is November already!
You know when you run an Independent shop. Sometimes it seems you are up against something all the time. You have to manage money and time, all the time, but in the end it is worth it. Two other things you have to battle all the time is the “E-Bay Syndrome” and the “Dealership mentality.” You know I have to go to the dealership at least three times a week to worship the H-D gods. The E-Bay syndrome goes like this. “I got this part for $5(it retails for, let’s say $75???), can you make it fit my bike?”
No! What did you really think you were getting for $5??? And the beat goes on! Even with all of this, there is still nothing I would rather do. On the other hand you have your faithful customers who make it all worthwhile. The guys who have been riding for more that two weeks! Enough said.
As we approach the holiday season mark your calendars for Toy Runs in your area. Go help someone out. It is part of the code!

BIKERNET INTERVIEWS THE LONE RANGER–The Lone Ranger and Tonto walked into a saloon and sat down to drink a Beer. After a few minutes, a big tall cowboy walked in and said “Who owns the big white horse outside?”
The Lone Ranger stood up, hitched his gun belt, and said, “I do….Why?”
The cowboy looked at the Lone Ranger and said, “I just thought you’d like to know that your horse is about dead outside!”
Silver was ready to die from heat exhaustion. The Lone Ranger got the horse some water and soon Silver was starting to feel a little better.
The Lone Ranger turned to Tonto and said, “Tonto, I want you to run around Silver and see if you can create enough of a breeze to make him start to feel better.” Tonto said, “Sure, Kemosabe” and took off running circles around Silver.
Not able to do anything else but wait, the Lone Ranger returned tothe saloon to finish his drink. A few minutes later, another cowboystruts into the bar and asks, “Who owns that big white horse outside?”
The Lone Ranger stands again, and claims, “I do, what’s wrong with him this time?” The cowboy looks him in the eye and says,
“Nothing, but you left your Injun runnin”

LEGENDS AT VEGAS-RAY PRICE AND MONDO PORRAS– Raleigh, NC: Ray Price, diverse business man, inducted member of the National Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame, Father of Funny Bike, owner of Ray Price Harley-Davidson/Buell, Inc., and Local Philanthropist, was recognized on October 17th with his own Special Day by the City of Raleigh. It’s like a Birthday without getting older.
The City Father’s have honored Ray Price for his continuous efforts to help the city and citizens of Raleigh, and after successfully bringing over 65,000 people to Fayetteville Street for the 2nd Annual Ray Price Capital City Bike Fest Rally in Raleigh, they proclaimed November 4th as RAY PRICE DAY. Price will celebrate his day with an estimated 6,000 of his closest friends with an Open House at Ray Price Harley-Davidson/Buell, Inc. on South Saunders St., over looking the City he loves.
Price continues his leadership of the Samson/Ray Price Nitro Harley drag race team. With Mark Morgan, Jeremy Hoy, Justin Heinle and rider Tommy Grimes, Price has lead his team to a first place in the NHRA Screamin’ Eagle Nitro Harley exhibition series and presently 5th place in the AHDRA Screamin Eagle Top Fuel Nitro Harley series.
The team has one more race opportunity, Nov. 11-12 at the JIM’s Las Vegas National Finals at THE STRIP at LVMS in Las Vegas, where the team will be joined by legendary custom bike builder Mondo Porras, owner of Denver’s Choppers. The Las Vegas based builder will be bringing several of his world famous choppers to the Samson/Ray Price pit area for display. Race and custom fans will enjoy the Mondo/ Price connection.
The time line of Ray Price and Mondo Porras is dramatically similar.
In 1967 Ray Price first started drag racing and Mondo Porras started building custom bikes with his partner Denver Mullins in San Bernardino, CA. Denver’s Choppers was and still is instrumental in starting the after market custom bike industry and Ray Price was and still is instrumental in pioneering the Nitro Harley drag racing world with his cutting edge technology.
Ray Price has established his now world famous Ray Price Harley-Davidson dealership in Raleigh, while Mondo is flourishing today in the custom parts business with Denver’s Choppers.
Mondo has participated in the Discovery Channel Bike Build Off, appeared with Billy Lane in the Blood, Sweat and Gears tour for The Discovery Channel and has filmed many motorcycle shows for ESPN and Speed Channel. Currently Mondo is filming his own Reality Show that will be broadcast in the year of 2007. Mondo has been dubbed as “The Godfather of Choppers” by his peers, has been and continues to be featured in motorcycle publications world wide as well as hardcover books.

If you’re a Buy American advocate, you’ve probably asked yourself if there was a way to participate in this good cause while still remaining true to your patriotic beliefs of supporting American workers whenever possible.
What better way is there to make Christmas in 2006 even more special than by putting smiles on the faces of children who might otherwise receive no gifts from Santa? But as it is with any act of good intentions, we need to be careful to ensure the process is just as honorable as what we set out to accomplish. So how can we avoid the trap of buying toys made by underprivileged kids in China to give to underprivileged kids in America? Well over 90% of all toys sold in America today are made in China where violations of child-labor and human-rights laws run rampant. Children under what we would consider a legal working age are routinely forced to work 12 hours a day or more. Wages are often less than a dollar an hour. 2007 Easyriders Centerfold Master Builder
CONTRABAND-FOR-SEX TRIAL UNDERWAY–TALLAHASSEE – Lawyers for two prison guards charged in a contraband-for-sex scandal that ended in a deadly shootout told jurors Monday that the government’s case is based on lies that female inmates are trying to trade for reduced sentences.Gregory Dixon and Alan Moore, both employed at a federal prison for women, are charged with conspiracy and bribery. Dixon is also accused of witness tampering.
“You will hear a lot of nonsense from inmates all trying to punch their tickets home,” said Thomas Findley, Dixon’s lawyer.
Three other guards have pleaded guilty to similar charges. A sixth, Ralph Hill, died in the gunfight at Tallahassee Federal Correctional Institution when government agents tried to arrest the guards June 21. Justice Department special agent William “Buddy” Sentner also was killed and a prison officer assisting in the arrests was wounded.
None of the surviving guards have been implicated in the shootout and lawyers never mentioned it during their opening statements in U.S. District Court.
Defense attorneys instead focused on the inmates’ expected testimony that they swapped sex for such commonplace items as gum, cigarettes and perfume.
“They are not nice women. They are not ladies,” said Robert Harper, Moore’s lawyer. “We submit they’re liars.”
Harper said jurors also will “hear from some officers who are corrupt” and one of them will deny there was any conspiracy.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Sprowls acknowledged his key witnesses are convicted felons but promised jurors that the government will introduce sufficient evidence to show the guards abused their authority for personal benefit.
He said the alleged conspiracy, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, was not based on a formal agreement nor even a handshake.
Findley said his client has admitted having sex with inmates, but he told the jury that Dixon has not been charged with that relatively minor crime, a misdemeanor.
“Mr. Dixon has elected to be straightforward about this,” Findley said. “He regrets it. He’s extremely sorry for the pain he has caused his family.”

It is estimated that Vietnam alone has 10 millionmotorcycles out of the 12 million motorised vehiclesthere. In Cambodia there is no license registry formotorcycle riders.
Motorcycles make up 95% of vehicles on the road inVietnam, 80% in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic,75% in Cambodia, 73% in Indonesia and 51% in Malaysia.
India has the second largest road network in the worldwith over 3 million km of roads of which 46% arepaved. The 40 million vehicles using the roads have aterrible toll on human life, killing over 80,000people with over one third of a million victimsrequiring hospital treatment. Some states have madehelmets compulsory while others have too many ridersto keep them in check.
The vehicle fleet in Thailand is estimated at about 26million vehicles (2004) which consists of a majorityof two-wheelers.
NEW GAS USEAGE PLAN–Bush wants us to cut the amount of gas we use. The best way to stop using so much gas is to deport 11 million illegal immigrants! That would be 11 million less people using our gas. The price of gas would come down.
Bring our troops home from Iraq to guard the border. When they catch an illegal immigrant crossing the border, hand him a canteen, rifle and some ammo and ship him to Iraq. Tell him if he wants to come to America then he must serve a tour in the military. Give him a soldier’s pay while he’s there and tax him on it.
After his tour, he will be allowed to become a citizen since he defended this country. He will also be registered to be taxed and be a legal patriot. This option will probably deter illegal immigration and provide a solution for the troops in Iraq and the aliens trying to make a better life for themselves. If they refuse to serve, ship them to Iraq anyway, without the canteen, rifle or ammo.

WORLD’S FASTEST BAGGER COMPETITION HEATS UP–I’ve been tossing around the idea of building one of my bagger model bikes in an attempt to compete at Bonneville in 2007. Any advice you could pass on? I know 5 Ball Racing did a kick ass job on the salt this year and you’ve inspired me to think about giving it a try, something I’ve always wanted to do since I was a kid.

The fairing will be key. You’ll have to look at those old FXR cop fairings that were more rounded. And find a front fender like my bike had, with wings around the front end.

I think we have a good design on the fairing. Unlike most of the H-D style fairings we don’t get that low pressure turbulence right in front of the rider so we tend to get a little more slippery than a lot of the FXR/FL style fairings. We know from testing the body work on our bagger helps the bike slide through the air a lot better than the same bike without the body work so it’s more efficient and is very stable at high speeds. I think we’d change our front fender anyway so that’s something I still need to work on. I’m still not sure it’s something I want to tackle and a lot depends on support from Sponsors.
I’m just a novice, but here’s a couple of things I learned. I spoke to Dennis Manning today and he confirmed that we’re trying to push something through the air at high speeds. Aerodynamics is critical. If you look at streamlined bikes you’ll notice that some have a nose and some are shaped narrowly. Wink told me that cutting the air is one thing, but closing the air is even more critical. Keep that in mind as you design your chassis.–Bandit

It’s Thursday already and we’ve been cookin’. Our Bikernet research continues regarding the constant media reports on the numbers of deaths in Iraq over 4 years. It’s under 3,000. Yet we’ve dug around and discovered that a 1,000 people are murdered every year in New York city. That would make the total for four years over 4,000. Why doesn’t CNN bitch about that daily?
Get this 16,000 people were murdered in the United States in 2005. Over a four year period that total would be: 64,000. Incredible. Where’s the complaints about police chiefs daily. I don’t get it, but I’m just a lamo biker. Sure, I have my questions about the bit in Iraq, but now we’re there, let’s see it through and support our troops all the way.
Let’s shift gears to the Bikernet Bonneville effort for 2007. The buzz is high. A book company contacted me about publishing a book on our Bikernet 2007 Bonneville effort. But there’s more Bonneville news. I spoke to Joe Teresi, the owner of Easyriders, “There’s a slightly higher that 50/50 chance we’ll return,” he said. Dennis Manning asked me if Easyriders would come back during a recent interview. We’re proud to have Dennis on Bikernet Radio this week. He’s the “Man” with the current 350 mph record. How do I become a Centerfold Master Builder?
A new Division of Easyriders Bike Shows has been created called the Pro Class. The sole purpose of creating the Pro Class is to select the 2008 Easyriders Centerfold Tour Master Builders. The Pro Class will be separate from the current Spectator and Judged Classes. There will be a Pro Class Division at the first 11 Regional Shows, with Kansas City hosting the Pro Class Finals on May 5, 2007. The Pro Class is open to anyone, with a one-time entry fee of $250.00, per bike, per Regional Show. Pro Class finalists will not be charged additional entry fees to bring their qualifying bike to Kansas City to compete in the Finals. At each of the first 11 Regional Shows, the Editors will choose 3 bikes out of all the entries in the Pro Class, in no particular order (i.e. No 1st, 2nd, 3rd Places), to advance to Kansas City, where six bikes will be chosen out of the field of finalists in the Pro Class Division.
The builders who create the six winning bikes will be named the 2008 Easyriders Centerfold Master Builders.

I am currently in 6th place out of 82 entries in the Super Gas class. In the V-Rod Destroyer, I have moved from 23rd to 14th out of 56 entries just in the past few races. They have found the horsepower in my bike we didn’t know it had. Along the way I have had a few bumps in the road that set me back (mechanical problems). Many people ask what I do when race season is over. I will continue to work just as hard as I do now. I am working on my 2007 race program. An Exclusive Interview With the Wild Angel of Chops and Choppers

To those in the know, the mere mention of Davie Allan and the Arrowsconjures aural images of fuzz bitten yet melodic guitar instrumentals.Davie’s is not a household name, although many fans purchased the group’sbuzz saw soundtracks and albums in the 1960s. Many millions more haveheard Davie Allan’s work without being able to put a name to the music.
Allan’s aggressive, fuzzed-out guitar instrumentals came to thebiker crowd by way of the classic B-movie “Wild Angels.” Before Angels, Allanhad scored another movie track with Mike Curb, on “Skaterdater.” But with “Wild Angels,” lightning struck and Davie Allan’s style coalesced into a unique,robust hybrid of Link Wray’s menacing power, Dick Dale’s caffeinatedshred, and the structural and musical sensibilities of his idol, HenryMancini. The song “Blues’ Theme” charted in regional markets across thecountry for the better part of a year, and a legend was born. Curb, Allanand the Arrows went on to compose and perform many musical scores forRoger Corman’s American International Pictures. Corman, it should be noted, was the king of the B-movie hill during the 1960s.
Allan and his current Arrows lineup are no oldies act. He is still composing and touring and his guitar chops have never been better. By rights, the name Davie Allan should be mentioned in the same breath as Dale and Wray. For better or worse, Allan?s early career was launched by Curb, his high school mate. Unfortunately, Curb also managed Allan and the Arrows. His opportunism and prodigious recycling of tracks did not bode well for the longevity of Allan’s success (Allan’s recorded legacy has been described as “a shitstorm of inconsistencies”). If ever there was a perfect subject for VH1’s ?Behind the Music,? it is that of Davie Allan and the Arrows. Theirs is a long, fascinating and improbable story.
How old were you when you first picked up guitar?
Allan: I started much later than I wanted to. I was around 15 and started performing within a couple of years.
Any humorous or interesting anecdotes from those earliest days?
Allan: I’m glad you asked. My first performance was at a luau, and myfirst drummer was Jim Gordon, who co-wrote “Layla” and is in jail formurdering his mother. That still shocks me. I have nothing but fond memories of working with him.
Flipside once referred to you as “High priest of the fuzz guitar.” Where and how did your frenetic, buzz saw guitar tone develop?
Allan: I guess this story gets told by other guitarists. In theearly days, we would put vocals AND guitars through one amp and couldn’thelp but get distortion. Van Halen cites “Blues’ Theme” as his firstintroduction to that grungy sound. As the amps got bigger, I got into fuzzboxes — my first one was made by the Gibson guitar company. Your questionbrings up a performance at one of the Love Rides (that’s the yearlymuscular dystrophy benefit that features 20,000 bikers going from Glendaleto Castaic, Calif.). We were doing a sound check and the soundman (who didn’thave a clue who I was) said, “Can we do something about that buzz saw effect?
“What was the inspiration for your adrenaline guitar tone?
Allan: I did a few distorted tunes early on but it was the ?Wild Angels? soundtrack that really set the tone that would stay with me for the 35years since those recordings were made. Since it was a biker film, I guess I was unknowingly going for a Harley sound with the guitar.
Who sang the ?Wild Angels? theme? It sounds like it might be Nancy Sinatra.
Allan: I always love it when I’m asked this question. It was Barbara Pittman, who had been on the Sun label and dated Elvis in the ?50s. She and I did a few duets (“This I Say” from the “Dr. Goldfoot & The Girl Bombs” soundtrack LP, “Makin’ Love” from the “Wild Wheels” soundtrack and a Manhattan Recordssingle: “Sha La La” and “You Really Got A Hold On Me.” The latter threewere billed as “The 13th Committee”).
Did you ever get to meet Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern or Nancy Sinatra?
Allan: I almost met Nancy this past year. A “Wild Angels” reunion was planned and we were slated to appear and to back her on a couple of tunes. We were also supposed to do a tune on the “Wild Angels” DVD that is due out soon. My meeting with Peter Fonda was disillusioning. We were promised a slot on the “Love Ride” show; Peter changed his mind but was going to have me come up on stage and introduce me. He changed his mind again but I went to the event anyway. I was still excited to meet him so when I saw him, I went over and grabbed his hand and introduced myself. He said nothing, then turned and walked away. The person in charge was able to at least talk Peter into posing for a picture later that day. I think he was out of it that day because he seemed like a different person when I saw him on an interview a couple of years later.
“Blues’ Theme” was recorded as a vocal in Davie’s collaboration with The Phantom Surfers (Skaterhater). Was the piece originally composed with lyrics?
Allan: Curb threw some lyrics together for the vocal version that appeared on ?The Wild Angels, Vol. II? LP.
What is your current recording and touring set-up?
Allan: After a few years of using a Roland guitar processor, I retired it for a few simple pedals such as a Pro-Co Rat, an Ibanez Tube Screamer and a 30-year-old Vox Wah Wah. When we don’t have a back line supplied, I use a 1980 Music Man amp and the guitar I use is a Fender Jazzmaster (with alterations) that I’ve had since 1965. I rarely use anything but the back pickup full blown.
How old are you?
Allan: It’s hard to lie about it anymore since my career goes back 40 years! I’m 56. In the last couple of years I have seen Link Wray and Dick Dale play live shows. They were absolutely at the top of their games, and even though many of the songs were familiar territory, there was no hint (sonically or in stage presence) that these guys were well past the age to be collecting Social Security.
Looking to your future, do you see yourself continuing to record and play live?
Allan: Unfortunately, the money isn’t there (I desperately need a tune in a film!) but I have no thoughts of giving it up. I’m working on making a CDR of my home demos to see if I can find a backer to finance a new album. We still do live shows and a tour is being discussed for later this year.
Will you do a cross-country thing or just regional to California?
Allan: We’ve done trips to Northern California plus Seattle, Portland and Tucson. In July/August of 1999, we did a three-week East Coast tour and we may do a similar one by the summer.
In 1996 you wrote the song “Vanishing Breed” for Dick Dale. How did this come to pass?
Allan: Dick and I have only worked together a couple of times but we go back to the ?60s. He played on a tune of mine in 1985 titled “Surf Trek” for my ?Arrow Dynamic? vinyl LP. I wrote “Vanishing Breed” for him and he said he would record it. He even told me that his son was going around the house humming it. After two years, I gave up and did it myself for the flipside of my “Shape of Things to Come” single for “Total Energy.”
You have referred to 1996’s “Fuzz Fest” as being the best thing you have done, and it is a solid and remarkably fresh-sounding release from start to finish. Was it just good kharma? What made this one special?
Allan: It was one of those magical moments like I had many times in the ?60s. Dave Provost was on bass and David Winogrond was on drums. We were totally in sync. So, there we were — Davie, Dave and David. All we needed was to add Dave Davies on second guitar! We came close with ?The Arrow Dynamic Sounds Of? CD in 1999. Dave had bowed out but Pete Curry stepped in and did a great job.
You really almost got Dave Davies from the Kinks to record with you?
Allan: That would’ve been too cool, but it was just a standing joke because of all the Daves.
Who are your favorite up-and-coming guitar-slingers? Do any of the current pack catch your ear?
Allan: I rarely listen to today’s music. I guess it’ll be surprise to learn that I listen mostly to Elvis, Frank, Bobby (Darin), Mancini, The Beatles and big band music.
The surprise is that none of these are instrumental guitar groups!
Allan: Well, I did mention Nokie Edwards (The Ventures). Some other favorites (are you sitting down for this?): Keely Smith, Linda Ronstadt, Matt Monro, Perry Como, Glenn Miller, ELO and Heart.
Are there any fuzz-drunk guitarists out there today who cite you asan influence?
Allan: I’ve been told that there are but I’ve only heard from fans who tell me how much I’ve influenced them. One fan recently told me that his young son watched a video of us to see how I played “Blues’ Theme.”
What do you think of the Insect Surfers and specifically the song “Volcano Juice”?
Allan: We’ve done quite a few shows with them and I was flattered when I was asked to play on that track. David Arnson and I soon became friends and he even appeared as an Arrow on a couple of shows.
I know you are influenced musically by Henry Mancini, but among guitarists, who influenced you?
Allan: Even though the guitar was basically a prop, my first influence was Elvis, followed by Duane Eddy, Nokie Edwards and George Harrison. Another favorite is Scotty Moore.
Were you/are you a Hendrix fan?
Allan: Never got into Jimi. I’ve been asked many times if he influenced me and except for his Top 40 hits, I didn’t hear any of his fuzz/wah stuff until years later.
Your new live CD, “Live Run” is on the Total Energy label, which also released “The Arrow Dynamic Sounds of Davie Allan and The Arrows” in 1999 and re-released “Fuzz Fest” in 1998. Have they done a good job promoting your work?
Allan: Without putting any blame on anyone, we’ve had great reviews on all three CDs. We did an East Coast tour in ’99, we won the LA Weekly Music Award for Best Instrumental Band of 1999, but there has been very little money made as far as CD sales.
Rumor has it that you either recorded an album of all surf stuff(fuzz style) or someone put out a compilation of your more surfy songs.True?
Allan: You must be referring to “Surftime On LBI.” That was anobvious bootleg that someone put together (badly) in New Jersey. The tuneswere re-titled. For instance, “Cycle-Delic” became “Surf-A-Delic” by DavyArrow & The Allens (nice spelling of both names).
What was the original idea behind your magnum opus tune “Cycle-Delic” Some fans think it’s the most free-form song you ever did. Were you influenced by outside trends or sources?
Allan: It was just something we started jamming on that tookshape after our August 1967 tour. When we got home, most of it was makingsense to us so we went into the studio and recorded it. We were reallyhappy with the result. What a shame that the multi-track tapes are gone;how I would love to hear it in stereo!
How long have you been playing with your current Arrows lineup of Lee Joseph on bass and David Winogrond on drums?
Allan: Lee goes back to 1998 as my bass player but we had crossed paths in 1990 when he released my “Old Neck And New Strings” LP. It wasre-released on CD (with extra tracks) and re-titled ?Loud, Loose And Savage?in 1993 on the Iloki label and then re-released again on Lee’s Dionysuslabel in 1999. David and I did one track together in 1987 (“The MissingLink”) but he didn’t become an official Arrow until 1994.
Your accompanying group throughout the ?60s was variously referred to as The Visitors, The Hands Of Time, The Sidewalk Sounds, etc. Is there what you would consider to be a “classic” Arrows lineup?
Allan: There were two classic lineups. The musicians who did ?The Wild Angels? and many other tracks were Larry Brown on drums, Drew Bennett on bass, Russ Viot on rhythm guitar and vocals and Jared Hendler on keyboards. After “Blues’ Theme” hit the charts, the traveling “Arrows” (and a few sessions) were Drew, Don Manning on drums and the multi-talented Wayne Allwine on rhythm guitar and vocals. Wayne is a great guy and we still keep in touch. I always love telling his story. He became the third official voice of Mickey Mouse in 1977 and married voice-over actress Russi Taylor a few years ago. She is the voice of Minnie Mouse!
Did you really write and perform more than 20 movie soundtracks in a three- year period back in the mid-60s?
Allan: We actually worked on about two dozen “B” movies. Mostwere awful but a few cult favorites came out of the bunch such as “The Wild Angels,” “Devil’s Angels,” “Wild In The Streets” and “Born Losers.”
How involved were you in scoring the movie soundtracks?
Allan: We recorded many full tunes although some were done in snippets. Soundtrack albums were planned so we did some versions especially for that purpose. Also, in a great many cases, some of our previous recordings were remixed and retitled.
Did you ever visit the movie shoots and/or do any kind of cameo?
Allan: The band was in one perfectly awful film titled “Albert Peckingpaw’s Revenge” in 1967 that was retitled “Jennie, Wife Child.” Someonesent me a video of it about eight years ago and it was worse than Iexpected. I was also in the background of another bad one titled “WildWheels” in 1969.
Is it true that you have never ridden a motorcycle?
Allan: Yes, but I do ride a bicycle on occasion.
Merl Haggard, Kacey Jones, and more recently Hank Williams III have complained bitterly about getting screwed by Curb Records. Tell us a bit about the history of your business relationship with Mike Curb, the good, the bad and the ugly.
Allan: I’ve been working on a story about my relationship with him for about six years. I’m holding back on telling it because a deal is being offered to sign off on the ?60s and start with a clean slate to re-release all the old tracks on CD. Many labels have approached me (in hopes that I owned the old recordings) to do box sets. Curb owns everything and has refused to lease anything out except for “Blues’ Theme” that has been on a few comps, including Rhino Records Nuggets four-CD box set that did quite well. Thankfully, I got my co-writing credit back because I’ve received nothing as the artist. Who knows, Curb and I started together in 1961, maybe he’ll get tired of all the bootlegs and take those recordings off the shelf and put them back out there where they belong.
I’ve seen elsewhere a reference to the year 1963 as the date you began working with Curb. Was 1961 when you were still going to high school together?
Allan: We met in the high school choir in ’61 and started doing demos in the studio soon after. The first releases were in ’63.
Was the song “Curb Job” a shot at Mike Curb?
Allan: That’s a tune that Mel Bergman (Phantom Surfers’ guitarist) wrote for me that is really a mafia term. It’s so disgusting that I would rather not describe it. It was also a shot at Curb. I did another project with Mel Bergman, a Ventures take on The Ramones. We called the group theRamonetures and an LP and CD came out in ’99. It was quite a challengefor me in that I had to learn the melodies of 16 tunes that I had neverheard before. It was released on the Blood Red Vinyl & Discs label.
What are your hobbies, outside of music?
Allan: Movies, a few TV shows, hiking, bicycling, softball. I used to collect autographs but got turned off when Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw turned me down at a club I was playing in Palm Springs. I also collected View Masters as a kid but all I collect today are Hallmark’s “Star Trek” ornaments.

Perhaps the popularity of these bootlegs will helpconvince Mike Curb to release official versions of those oldrecordings. BARBER MUSEUM RACES–At Barber event, Dale Walksler on his 1095 Indian won Race of Century for 100-year-old-bikes. There was also an air show, 400 vendors, and I met and interviewed Mr. Barber and John Surtees who was there for a dedication. Great guys. Surtees rode his MV and championship 1964 Ferrari on the track.

NEW PLAYGROUND OPENS FOR MOTORCYCLE ENTHUSIASTS–DAYTONA BEACH — Call it a dealership or call it a tourist attraction. Randy Epling doesn’t care. He’s counting on his new Cycle World of Daytona to fill both roles.The 50,000-square-foot motorcycle showroom, which opened two weeks ago at 2900 Bellevue Ave., breathes new life into a 12-year-old building that has been sitting vacant since 2003 when the Klassix Auto Attraction went out of business.
Cycle World still has the car museum’s old rotating platform, surrounded by mirrored walls, as the focal point of its main floor. But instead of showing off the Batmobile, the platform now exhibits five tricked-out heavyweight motorcycles, including Epling’s personal Boss Hog, priced at $48,874.
In all, the two-story building displays more than 300 motorcycles, scooters and off-road vehicles from five brands — Japan-based Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha, and American-made Boss Hoss and Ridley. It also contains a used motorcycle department, repair shop, sportswear and accessories boutiques, displays for pre-teen riders, a snack bar, offices, and conference rooms.
Another eye-catching feature is a new miniature movie theater, a 20-seat screening room created inside a replica of a Grumman Albatross Flying Boat, a vintage seaplane.”We’ll use it for infomercials, footage of factory tours, safety training films, highlights of Daytona Beach’s tourism, and things like that,” Epling said.The theater isn’t quite finished, but Epling hopes to have it operational within a few weeks.
Several other features remain to be added, such as reflective billboards for walls along the circular ramp leading to the second floor. “It’s still a work in progress but we plan to have everything finished by Bike Week next spring,” said Tina Martin, the dealership’s marketing director.Kevin Killian, vice president of special events for The Chamber, Daytona Beach/Halifax Area, said he was glad to see the dealership open in time for Biketoberfest.”It fills up a space that’s pretty significant for our tourism corridor,” he said.
The dealership is open 9-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9-5 on Saturday.

PA DROPS HELMET LAW AND MOTORCYCLE DEATHS DROP, TOO– In the year after a new law permitted Pennsylvania motorcyclists to ride helmetless, the number of deaths has decreased enough to maybe let some Big Ben critics breathe a sigh of relief.
The number of motorcyclists killed on Pennsylvania highways dropped to 157 last year from 171 in 2003, the state Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger created a furor earlier this month when he acknowledged that he rides without a helmet. Neither Roethlisberger nor his spokesman could be reached for comment.
Helmets became optional in September 2003 for riders at least 21 years old who either have been licensed for two years or have completed a motorcycle safety course.
The numbers were welcome news for the 6,000-member Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education, which lobbied to end the mandatory helmet law. The Pennsylvania chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration opposed the move for safety reasons.
“Our critics predicted mayhem and carnage all over the highway. Everyone said the number of fatalities would climb dramatically,” said ABATE spokesman Jeff Harris. “The number of fatalities is still too high, our goal is zero. That may be difficult, but we are doing everything in our power to reduce it.”
Motorcycle fatalities nationwide increased between 1997 and 2003, according to agency statistics.In 2003 in the U.S., 3,661 motorcyclists were killed and 67,000 were injured. That’s up from 3,270 fatalities and 65,000 injuries in 2002. More recent numbers are not yet available.

BIKETOBERFEST FUN– I have been attending Biketoberfest since it first started and have to say that I have enjoyed doing so. I have seen it grow, spread out, and change. Like Bike Week there is so much to see and do that you have to do a little planning on how to spend your time and even then things change.
I actually started off with the intention of covering some of the events that have women wrestling in stuff like pudding and whipped cream. Hey! I like that kind of stuff and so do a lot of my readers. It’s a dirty job but someone has to do it. I hope one of the other people there did because like a lot of others my plans changed some.
I was in some of the places out side of town that have this type of entertainment But at the wrong time. I was at the White Eagles though when Molly Hatchet played. Also Renee was applying whipped cream to her body. Yea I was one of the people that helped remove it. Tasted Good Too!
I chose to visit places other than Down Town and got to ride around the county with friends from Joisey! I also went to a couple of Meet and Greets at places like the American Legion and B.F.F.A.R.
I did not make it to Orlando but friends that did told me they had a good time there. There was also a lot going on down towards Cocco Beach.
Many say that Biketoberfest is an indication of what is going to happen at Bike Week of the coming year. So start making plans now to Come On Down and Have Some Fun In The Florida Sun. Okay it does rain some days so have fun indoors with who your with Oh Yea!

BIKERNET D&D EXHAUST QUESTION OF THE WEEK– Question: Why do mufflers blue?
Answer: Chrome turns blue due to oxidation at high temperature. If you look behind our heat shields you Will find bluing on all of our headpipes due to exhaust gas temperatures above 1000 degrees F.
The heat-shields provide an air-gap to reduce conductive heat transfer, plus chrome plating to reduce radiant heat transfer. Also the billet clamp mounts and the heavy gage of the heat-shields themselves help prevent hot spots. Our baffle designs incorporate a variety of protective chambers, sealed exhaust pathways and heavy gage materials to protect the finish.
Bluing of heat shields and muffler housings is caused by excessive heat generated from improper fuel mixture, ignition timing, or a combination of the two. Rich fuel mixtures burn inside the pipe and lean mixtures raise the exhaust gas temperature.

AAA PROMOTES USE OF AIR BAGS AND HELMETS FOR MOTORCYCLISTS– The American Automobile Association has issued a press release urging motorcyclists to “explore new safety advances – including airbags” in an effort “to help motorcycle riders curtail the growing number of fatal crashes involving riders.”
“AAA wants all motorists to be aware that tremendous growth in the popularity of motorcycling has added millions of new motorcycles and riders to our roadways,” said AAA President, Robert L. Darbelnet. “This means drivers need to be more aware than ever of how to share the road safely with motorcycles. And motorcyclists need to take every opportunity to increase their margin of traffic safety? (and) better protect themselves by wearing protective gear, clearly illuminating their rides and looking into new technologies such as motorcycles equipped with airbags, the road can be safer for all of us,” Darbelnet said.
“Promising new safety technologies – such as a motorcycle airbag system recently tested by AAA in cooperation with its equivalent motoring organization in Germany, ADAC – demonstrate that motorcycles can be equipped to provide much more protection for riders,” AAA said.
AAA continued, “Motorcyclists owe it to themselves and their loved ones, to upgrade to a high quality helmet if they have not already done so, and to wear appropriate eye protection, footwear, gloves, and bright or reflective riding apparel.”
“Motorists too, need to play a larger role in motorcycle safety,” Darbelnet said. Approximately 50 percent all motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle, according to AAA.
CELEBRITY R-O-W– By now you’ve probably read at least one report of Angelina Jolie’s sideswiping of a motorcycle, and injuring the teenage girl passenger, as she supposedly fled the paparazzi in India where’s she’s shooting A Mighty Heart. But a version of the story from the local Indian media relays the firsthand accounts of both the accident victim and an eyewitness:
The student, Mittal Rawat (19), told Janwadi police and The Indian Express newspaper that; “Two vehicles were also proceeding towards the same direction and tried to overtake me. One of the vehicles brushed against my motorcycle and I fell down. Both the vehicles then sped away,” he said. Eyewitness Nikhil George, a student, said the two vehicles had jumped the signal; “Soon after jumping the signal, one of the four-wheelers hit the motorcycle. The rider and a girl riding pillion fell, but had a narrow escape,” he said.
This Indian outlet’s version of events exemplifies their apparent disinterest in milking the accident story because of a celebrity’s involvement; while young Rawat’s statement that “immediately following the incident, Jolie’s vehicle pulled up beside me and my damaged motorcycle, rolled down a window, and she asked how old I was. When I told her 19, she said to the driver, ‘No, he’s way too old to take home to Maddy and Shiloh. Let’s get out of here,’ and they drove off. I’m not sure what she meant by that,” would have set off a week of cover stories in the sensationalist American tabloid media, The Indian Express let it pass without further exploitation.

TOMMY THOMPSON BIKER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE–As some of you may know, I’ve been the Head Road Captain for the Tommy Thompson Governor’s Ride for all eleven years of the ride. Thompson has been a friend to bikers ever since I first met him back in the middle 1970’s when he was in the State Assembly. He went on to become governor of Wisconsin in 1986 and served for 14 years, the longest serving governor in Wisconsin.
He left Wisconsin to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services for the Bush Administration and revamped that department while dealing with biological and chemical threats from terrorist organizations, post 9/11, and assisting in modernizing the medical infrastructure and hospitals in Afghanistan.
Just last week, I was with Mr. Thompson in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, along with Sen. Dave Zien. Tommy told us then that he would soon be announcing that he would be running for President of the United States. In fact, this morning a Milwaukee radio station was making that announcement public.
I have been talking to Thompson and his office staff since last June as he contemplated his decision to announce formally that he was entering the race. It was very hard to keep this exciting news quiet, but I respected his wishes. Now I’m looking to the upcoming 2007 Tommy Thompson Ride as a very special event.
Tommy Thompson began riding motorcycles at the urging of Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien. He promoted tourism in Wisconsin from the seat of a Harley-
Davidson motorcycle during his early rides, while promoting business and rewarding companies for creating new jobs.
In August, 2002, Thompson was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Sturgis, South Dakota. Earlier that year, in June, he walked Vicki Roberts down the aisle when she married Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo on the top of Crazy Horse monument in South Dakota. Vicki is the Founder and Director of Accident Scene Management, Inc. and Thompson has allowed his rides to help generate funding for this worthwhile cause that helps motorcyclists.
Tommy Thompson has been a friend of motorcyclists for many years, and has signed some significant legislation in Wisconsin for ABATE of Wisconsin, including laws dealing with angle parking issues and motorcycle confiscations.
He deserves the support of motorcyclists around the country in his bid for high office. He has supported us since the helmet repeals of the 1970’s. Wouldn’t it be great to have a biker in charge of the country for a change?

So Dec. 4th we start our filming. The build has to be done by Dec. 22nd. We don’t know exactly where we are riding to in California. But right now it’s looking like either the Pamona Easyriders show Jan. 6th or the Sacramento Easyriders Show on Jan 13th.
We would love any one that can come and support us to please come. We would also love any riders that felt like joining us to let me know. If anyone has any words of advice we would appreciate them. Hopefully, Butch and I will not kill each other and do a great show.

BILANSKY RIDES BUELL TO ASRA THUNDERBIKE CROWN AT DAYTONA–DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 22, 2006) – Hal’s H-D/Buell-Hal’s Speed Shop rider Dan Bilansky executed a perfect last-lap pass to win the American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) Thunderbike National Championship at the 23rd Annual Daytona Race of Champions at Daytona International Speedway. Bilansky, riding a Buell Firebolt XB12R, passed BMW rider Nate Kern to win the Thunderbike National race by about one bike length to claim the season championship by a single point. It was the third ASRA Thunderbike win of the season for Bilansky.
Bilansky, from Waukesha, Wis., arrived at Daytona for the eighth and final round of the ASRA Thunderbike season in third place, trailing Veatch Motorsports rider Dave Estok by 27 points and H-D/Buell of Frederick rider Bryan Bemisderfer by 16 points. To win the championship, 28-year-old Bilansky would need to win the Daytona race and have Estok and Bemisderfer fail to finish, a turn of events that seemed unlikely.
Qualifying for the Thunderbike National was cancelled due to scheduling problems on Saturday, which put points-leader Estok on the pole. At the start of the 10-lap national, Bilansky and Kern pulled away together, with Kern officially leading the first lap. Bilansky passed for the lead on lap two, but Kern passed the Buell rider back on lap three. Bemisderfer and Estok were not far behind, but both suddenly dropped out on lap four, Estok with a mechanical problem and Bemisderfer with a dead battery.
Bilansky rode the last six laps of the race glued to Kern’s tail and in position to attempt a drafting pass on the long final straight leading to the finish. He timed the pass perfectly and beat Kern to the line for the win. Kern was later disqualified for failing to report directly to tech inspection following the race. Bimota rider Chris Boy officially finished second, followed by Ducati rider Tommy Eckfeldt in third. Appleton Buell/Hoban Brothers Racing rider Jeff Johnson was fourth on a Buell Firebolt, followed by Buell riders Joe Rozynski (Sound Waves/Hal’s Speed Shop) and Andrew Hamblin (Custom World.com/Hal’s Speed Shop), and Ducati rider Rhiannon Lucente in seventh position. Buell riders Sam Rozynski (Sound Waves/Hal’s Speed Shop), Tim Hall (Jim’s H-D/Buell) and Anthony Caligiuri (Liberty H-D/Buell) rounded out the top ten.
Bilansky ends the season with 199 Thunderbike points, one point ahead of Estok and 11 points ahead of Bemisderfer. Sam Rozynski is fourth with 159 points, followed by Kern with 134 points. The ASRA Thunderbike title is the first national championship for the 28-year-old Bilansky, who finished second in Thunderbike points in 2005.
“Because of the points situation, we really didn’t come to Daytona trying to make anything happen,” said Bilansky. “During the race I didn’t realize that Estok and Bemisderfer were out, and I didn’t know I needed to win to take the championship. My Buell was performing flawlessly today, and I was just going for one more win to end the season.”
While he won three races in 2006 and finished on the podium at two others, Bilansky also failed to finish three Thunderbike events, including two in a row in the middle of the season.
“That was a discouraging stretch, but our problems were really just racer’s bad luck,” said Bilansky. “We bounced back and won the last two races of the year. But I might not have made it to Daytona without some generous last-minute financial support from my family, friends and some local businesses. My dad even drove my truck down here for me.”
Bilansky also won the five-lap CCS Expert Thunderbike National Championship on Friday at Daytona in a battle of CCS regional winners.

On Oct. 21 at Daytona International Speedway, James Gang Racing (Paul James, John Fox and Greg Avello), sponsored by Hal’s Speed Shop/Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Buell/Kegel Motorcycle Co., raced a Buell XB12R Firebolt to a second-place finish (182 laps, 21st place overall) in the Grand Sports Twins (GST) class during the inaugural SunTrust MOTO-ST Series 8 Hours At Daytona endurance event. The class was won by Team Ducati Toronto (Pat Barnes, Robert Trottier and Matt McBride) aboard a Ducati (207 laps, 14th overall). Buell is the presenting sponsor of the MOTO-ST SuperSport Twins (SST) class and offered $10,000 of contingency support to privateer Buell racers aboard XB and XBRR model motorcycles at the inaugural Daytona event.

BIKERNET BLONDE JOKE OF THE WEEK– A pretty young blond goes to her local pet store in search of an exotic pet. As she looks about the store, she notices a box full of live frogs.

The blonde excitedly looks around to see if anybody’s watching her. She whispers softly to the man behind the counter, “I’ll take one.”
The man packages the frog and says, “Just follow the instructions.”

As soon as she closes the door to her apartment, she reads the instructions and reads them very carefully. She does exactly what is specified:

– Part 1Some of the factors affecting tire life are wheel spin, load, riding style.
Wheel spin – when you spin your tires, for example, in a burn out this greatly shortens the life of a tire
Load – often people overload the bike’s capacity with saddlebags, trailers, heavy riders, and enough stuff to set sail in Noah’s Ark. Pay attention to the bike manufacturer’s recommendations for how much load the bike can handle. Then pay careful attention to the tire pressure noted on the sidewalls.
For example a bike could weigh 900 pounds and if the capacity over that is 400 pounds of luggage and rider(s) and their gear you can rapidly exceed that limit. e.g. 240 lb rider and 150 lb passenger. Now add tongue weight of trailer, gear and luggage and you’ve already exceeded the carrying capacity of the bike.
Then there is the tires’ carrying capacity which generally on a big touring bike can range from 1200 to 1700 pounds. This is if you are fully inflated. If you are not running at max psi then your load carrying capacity goes down. If you are running under inflated and/or fully loaded you can quickly wear out a set of tires. In addition sidecars and trailers will generally take about 3-5,000 miles off the life of the tire.
Riding Style – If you tend to be heavy handed cranking on the throttle you’ll just watch the dollars peel off your rear tire as you wear it down quite rapidly. Or if you break using mainly your front brake as a good rider should on most bikes then you can experience cupping or heavy wear on the front. Other things to be aware of – riding with body weight to one side will cause wear on that side, riding with a good mix of curves and straights will wear the tire more evenly across the surface.

PA STATE POLICE MUST OBEY THE GUN LAW– The PA State Police are refusing to obey the law, despite court decisions to the contrary.
Federal privacy laws prohibit the mandatory use of social security numbers as identification. In a recent court decision, U.S. District Judge Juan R. Sanchez stated that gun owners cannot be required to supply social security numbers when buying a gun or applying for a concealed carry permit.
But the PA State Police, with the help of the Attorney General Tom Corbett (R), are disregarding the court and are asking a circuit court judge to strike down Sanchez’ order. They don’t want to issue privacy warnings, as required by Section 7(b) of the Privacy Act of 1974; they want to keep collecting the social security numbers of all gun buyers and carry permit holders.
Gun Owners Foundation has been assisting Lt. Col. Michael Stollenwerk, who is leading the fight to stop the registration of gun owners. Stollenwerk won victories in two other states: first in California, where he convinced authorities that their requirement to force gun buyers to turn over their social security number violated federal law; and then again in Virginia, where authorities were less accommodating and only agreed to respect citizens’ privacy after losing in court.
Pennsylvania has been equally contemptuous of federal law and citizen privacy, so Stollenwerk took them to federal court. In 2003, Stollenwerk tried to get a concealed carry permit and purchase a gun. Both efforts failed when he refused to fork over his social security number. On February 24, 2006, Judge Sanchez ruled against Pennsylvania, although the state is refusing to comply.

It’s a wild Thursday. Damn, there’s a tremendous amount of action going on in this industry and with Bikernet. We’re working with the Easyriders Show Circuit this year as a sponsor and we’ll bring you news about the shows and Rodeos all year long.

CHANGING FACE OF BIKETOBERFEST–Things have been changing in Daytona Beach and the surrounding area for motorcycle events and that has become more evident at the recent Biketoberfest. I would say the most obvious is that the activities are moving from Main and Beach Streets. Oh Main Street and downtown will always have its fair share of visitors, as it should have, but those who visit there have noticed a decrease in traffic, which is good.
The Hot Spot now is Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona at I-95 and US1. That also means the businesses on US1 like the Broken Spoke, Iron Horse, and Peggy’s on the Ormond strip are doing well. That trend is continuing to the surrounding areas outside the city. From Jacksonville to Cocco Beach on the coast to Orlando inland all have plenty going on.
Many of the motorcyclists are now being seen with their children and it appears that will continue. The Rats Hole Show and other events that are family oriented and seem to be doing well. Orlando also has many family activities and lower lodging rates in many cases.
There are more women riding their own motorcycles many with their children on the back and occasionally with a male passenger. There also seems to be a increase in some of the 40 and above group. Biketoberfest is growing and spreading out across central Florida!
It is believed that this will set a pattern that will continue for Bike Week in March.

THREAD CITY CYCLE SHOW COMMITTEE–Here’s a nice picture of Mike Dodds and Karen who were instrumental in the success of the Thread City Cycle Old Skool show in Windham, Connecticut last weekend. There were 35 awesome bikes in the show, and people came from New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire, Mass., even Maine to attend. The music was funky blues and everyone was riding in the COLD but clear Sunday wind.

That’s just to name a few things. –Simo DRAG RACING MOTORCYCLISTS KILLS WOMAN–DAYTONA BEACH — Having just left the festivities at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Nora Cardona and her husband ambled north across the busy boulevard holding hands.As the couple neared the median, a 22-year-old man drag racing two friends on his sport bike struck Cardona, police said. “He ended up taking the woman right out of the man’s hand,” said Brandon Walden, who saw the crash as he waited to turn into the Speedway. Paramedics, police, even Walden’s father, a preacher who was working at a nearby booth, dashed to the 39-year-old woman who lay crumpled under the motorcycle. But it was too late. Cardona was pronounced dead at the scene. She is the fourth person to die during Biketoberfest, which ended. Now the man who hit her, Kreso F. Orlic of Carlstadt, N.J., faces vehicular manslaughter charges, said Daytona Beach Lt. Jimmie Flynt. Orlic was at Halifax Medical Center on Saturday night with non-life threatening injuries. –from Rogue

ROCKEM SOCKEM MOTORCYCLE FOR SALE–This ain’t any ordinary custom. Ralph and the crew at Rockem built this bike in their shop, pulled it off the lift and rode it to the Smoke Out East in Salisbury, NC. “We did it to show those sniveling HORSE whiners that people do build full-customs and ride,” Ralph, the Prez, said. They didn’t even take one of their tried and true production bobbers. They built a fresh bike from the ground up and hit the road.
This bike is currently for sale for $35,000.

WORLD’S FASTEST 200 MPH BIKERNET PANHEAD UNDER CONSTRUCTION–We are underway and our team is growing. After studying the special construction rule book from the SCTA I worked with Chris Kallas on a concept drawing sketch.

At first I just thought Salt Shaker II WFP (world’s Fastest Panhead).Today I flashed on one that I think has potential and could be used as a theme. ItCould be spelled a number of ways:ASSALT WEAPON A SALT WEAPON ASSALT WEAPAN.I think the first one is the best.It wouldn’t have to be, but the bike could be built in a very gun like way. Gray or black finishes.Bomber girl could be holding a M-16, etc.Whatca think?”
Rick Krost from U.S. Choppers is building the frame and I put him in touch with Leo DiOrio of Speed Twin who is building our front end.
“With a front end that is 19″ from center axle to bottom of tree, the top of the neck post sits 35-inches off the floor +/- 1/2 front/back,” Rick said. “The bottom of the frame loop sits 3-inches above ground. The neck posts are 2 1/4 inch tube with internal races and fork stop provisions on bottom (standard). They measure 7″ long not including stop tabs fore and aft.I hope that these measurements can help in the mean time….”

We needed Valerie’s measurements for Chris to work with. “I just got done racing today,” Valerie reported in, “but still in Rockingham. I’m 5’4 and 3/4th. 105-110 lbs.”
“I made it to the 1/4 final’s and made some great passes! I ran the best I ever have on the bike…9.30 ET and 154 mph with a 1.34 first 60ft. I smoked them!!!” Valerie is running in the Destroyer class for Hacienda Harley-Davidson in Phoenix.”I am going to stay here for another week,” Val added. “Matt Smith from the NHRA helped me this weekend on my clutch tune up. He’s going to test ‘n’ tune with me in GA this Thursday. Matt is Chip Ellis’s teammate. They both race for George Bryce…So I’m in good hands. He was so helpful…!Can’t wait for the new stuff!!! :)”

“Do know what you are going to run for wheels. The reason I ask is depending on the hub configuration, or what we can do with the hub or hubs. It will let us know what we are able to do with wheel bearing spacing this in turn will let us know how narrow we can build the mating components.”
I believe we will run a small 19 front and an 18/180 rear. We are looking for a solid rear wheel and a almost solid front. More reports will be forthcoming. –Bandit
WEEKLY BLONDE JOKE–This blond decides one day that she is sick and tired of all these blond jokes and how all blonde’s are perceived as stupid. So, she decides to show her husband that blonde’s really are smart.

TEXAS NATIONAL BIKE SHOW COMING– Today will be a fairly quick update because…. although I still have two more build-off bikes to let you have a sneak peak at, both of my builders neglected to send me any photos. It’s like herding cats! Busy bikers go figure. So hopefully I will be bringing you two builders next week.
Speaking of next week it will be the last time you hear from me until after the show. I do have some pretty cool news to share this week though. The world famous photographer Darryl Briggs www.darrlybriggs.com will be setting up shop at the show to not only chronicle all of the bikes in the show for the awards ceremony but he will also be scheduling appointments for any participant wanting to have their bike shot for an 8×10. He is bringing along the beautiful Jeri as his bikini model, so sign up boys (and girls) while you are there. Mr. Briggs will also be shooting a poster calendar while he is at the show, so stop by on Saturday morning and see 10 of our fabulous bikini models posing on 6 hot customs.

IT’S ALMOST MARGARITA TIME–That was another kick-ass news. I mentioned last week that we are raising our sponsorship rates as of January 1st. Our primary reason is we’ve held to the same rates since we had 50,000 readers a month and now we’re reaching 300,000. One of the reasons is that some companies haven’t paid their bills. We may have to take Johnny Suede to court in the near future. Another reason involves content. The more content we can afford, the bigger and better the site becomes. It helps me pay writers and photographers all over the world. There’s nothing more satisfying to me than to deliver more content to you. It’s my goddam job, and I love it.
