BIG DOG MOTORCYCLES PROMOTES DOUG CLARK–A Quality Control Specialist for the manufacturer nearly two years,Clark takes on new management role and charged with focusing on vendor and component quality
WICHITA, Kansas (December 6, 2006) – Big Dog Motorcycles?, the world’s largest manufacturer of custom motorcycles, recently promoted Doug Clark to Quality Control Manager. Clark has worked in the company’s quality control department as Quality Control Specialist since 2005.
Clark brought over a decade of quality control and parts inspection experience to Big Dog Motorcycles – experience complemented with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona.
John Brock, Vice President, Materials Management, made the announcement.
“In the short time he has been with Big Dog Motorcycles, Doug has been an impressive addition to our quality control department. His experience, education, technical ability, and the fact that he knows quality issues firsthand are tremendous assets,” Brock stated. “I am confident his new appointment will reinforce our current quality control standards while providing invaluable assistance in our focus on enhanced motorcycle reliability.”
With his team of nine employees, Clark ensures the assembly line runs smoothly with correctly configured parts; components are manufactured to Big Dog Motorcycles’ stringent quality standards; and vendors provide an acceptable product.
Clark also participates in the vendor selection process which makes certain Big Dog Motorcycles vendors can manufacture components as engineered with high levels of quality and that the components can be delivered in a timely manner.

ROGUE DOES 69 AT MALABAR MO’s– Yes he did. Doris, his brothers and friends put on his 69th birthday party at Malabar MO’s in Malabar Florida. This is the Biker Bar that Rogue and many others hang out at.
He was told ahead of time to drink as much as he wanted and have a good time. That could have been a dangerous offer, butSome safe guards were put in place like having kids and grandkids with him during the day. Rogue is a Bikernet correspondent, performance bike builder, a member of the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame and a contributor to Easyriders for 30 years.
As the day went on and the children left the older kids started to play. Now, you have to realize, this was his 69th and he was not going to let that opportunity get away. Oh Yes you can guess where this is going and went. There were also some 34 & a half deals made where, okay I owe you one or vice versa. Hey he has had a long time to come up with this and you can believe he was taking advantage of it.
There was plenty of food, beer, wine and soda for all, Music was supplied by Elgin Hooper and those in attendance had a good time.
Rogue is known for liking his Jack Daniels and he got a full years supply as well as numerous other items. One of the bottles was taken to the pickup and Kellie made him a drink. Now Rogue knows better than to have Kellie make mixed drinks for him, but he was not paying attention and pretty soon he realized he had a buzz. Luckily that was anticipated and he had a designated driver.
Some of the other details are a fuzzy, but I know I had one Hell Of A Time and so far everyone else said they did too. My best gift was having those that could make it and mean something to me being there.
Now all I have to do is get through a year of 69 and 34 & 1/2s
I’ll Give it my Best Shot

Pearl Harbor Day News,
Life is bananas and Pearl Harbor was one of those times in our history. We survived and we will survive the current conflict in the Middle East. Keep in mind, millions died in WWII, 60,000 died in Vietnam and 2,800 have died in Iraq. It’s too bad we just can’t get along, but mix religion and greed into any equation, and it all goes to shit.
The news is a monster today and I was out of town in Vegas at the Big Twin West Show last week, so the e-mails stacked up. If I missed anything today, don’t hesitate to send it to me again. I generally sort through all Bikernet e-mails twice a week, Thursday and Sunday. But today, I’m holding back.
It’s the season. So shop now, quick, so you don’t stress as the month slips away. I want you to have time to relax, enjoy friends and sip Jack Daniels. Let’s hit the news:

Bubba Bechtol, part time City Councilman from Midland, TX, was asked ona local live radio talk show the other day just what he thought of theallegations of torture of the Iraqi prisoners. His reply prompted hisejection from the studio, but to thunderous applause from the audience.
“If hooking up an Iraqi prisoner’s scrotum to a car’s battery cables willsave one American GI’s life, then I have just two things to say”

FBI, CELL PHONES AND SPYS–Did you read today how the FBI is using peoples cell phones to spy on them. They only do it with court orders though, you believe them right? They have a way to send files to the phone and have it call them, leaving the screen blank like the phone is inactive. Then they just listen to whatever is being said around the phone. They can even do this if the phone is turned off, they just tell it to turn on since modern phone are never really off unless the battery is taken out.
If you need to be sure your bike club is not being spied on then take the battery out. Of course that means nobody can call you. If I wanted to know if this was being done to me during a meeting I’d randomly have someone call the phone. Better not get a busy signal!!!!
Me, I just figure I’ll put an off switch in-line with the mic. Let them listen to silence.

HOLLISTER IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER–After a one-year absence, Hollister is back with Horse Power. The 60-year original Hollister Motorcycle Rally continues its tradition in 2007.
For the first time, the city of Hollister has enlisted the help of a promotions company to create a motorcyclist’s entertainment Mecca in its historic downtown area. Veteran event company Horse Power Promotions enlists its 26-year expertise in public relations and production to work around the clock on one of the biggest makeovers in rally history.
In years past Hollister has been known for the type of rally that attracted a crowd who would simply ride downtown for one day around the 4th of July, opting for a t-shirt and a cold one, take a look and ride off. But Horse Power Promotions is working to change that. By stepping up the non-stop entertainment, organizing on-going demonstrations for bikers such as creating a builders square full of the bike building craftsmen of today), Hollister’s 2007 Rally will be one its most memorable and action-packed.
Hollister Motorcycle Rally is the largest of its kind in California and one of the top ten in the United States, always offering a great line up of vendors. Horse Power Promotions and the new Hollister Motorcycle Rally Committee plan on luring more vendors than ever before and the new easy-to-maneuver layout of the downtown motorcycle marketplace will insure all vendors a premium space in the heart of Hollister, while also creating a great shopping experience with the downtown merchants.
The excitement is mounting: Custom Bike Show, two stages with live music, Corbin open house, great riding are just a taste of what’s on tap. New for 2007 is VIP bike parking with helmet and leather checks. Go to www.horsepowerpromotions.com for info on the value packed Rally packages and the latest news.
BIKERNET/5-BALL RACING SPONSORSHIP TESTIMONIAL–Out of all of the adds I have bought, shit that I have given away, Sturgis, Daytona, Discovery Channel, Speed Channel, donated crap, events, trade shows, free builds, magazines, etc., NOTHING has paid off as far as publicity goes as the Five Ball Panhead. Man, this sucker is showing up everywhere and is actually bringing in a couple of sales which I’m sure will increase.
Damn, it is still true, “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday”. I can’t wait for the new bike. Yes, we are progressing on it but I am also looking for some more sponsorship. This is getting to be a rich engine. But worth it.
Jennings, my son, killed a five point buck, his first! 100 yard shot right on the money. I can’t tell you what that was like to be there with him. A right of passage I reckon’.

BIKENET BLONDE JOKE OF THE WEEK– As a trucker stops for a red light, a blonde catches up. She jumps out of her car, runs up to his truck, and knocks on the door. The trucker lowers the window, and she says “Hi, my name is Heather and you are losing some of your load.” The trucker ignores her and proceeds down the street.
When the truck stops for another red light, the girl catches up again. She jumps out of her car, runs up and knocks on the door. Again, the trucker lowers the window. As if they’ve never spoken, the blonde says brightly, “Hi my name is Heather, and you are losing some of your load!”
Shaking his head, the trucker ignores her again and continues down the street.
At the third red light, the same thing happens again. All out of breath, the blonde gets out of her car, runs up, knocks on the truck door. The trucker rolls down the window. Again she says ” Hi, my name is Heather, and you are losing some of your load!”
When the light turns green the trucker revs up and races to the nextlight. When he stops this time, he hurriedly gets out of the truck, and runs back to the blonde. He knocks on her window, and after she lowers it, he says… “Hi, my name is Kevin, it’s winter in Illinois and I’m driving the SALT TRUCK!”

STATE GIVES H-D 4.5 MILLION IN TAX CREDITS FOR EXPANSION–MILWAUKEE – The state has given Harley-Davidson, Inc. $4.5 million in tax credits to support the motorcycle maker’s expansion of operations in Wisconsin, including the addition of up to 200 jobs.
The Milwaukee-based company will receive the tax credits in exchange for investing $300 million over the next few years on a plant expansion and workforce training, Gov. Jim Doyle announced Friday.
Last month, the company’s union workers in Milwaukee approved contract concessions, including cuts to health benefits and pay, creating a lower wage for new employees. Harley said it needed the cuts to undertake a $120 million plant expansion project in the suburb of Menomonee Falls, to expand production of power trains and add about 100 jobs.
Members of United Steelworkers of America Local 2-209 accepted the proposal after rejecting a previous version that included a larger wage gap for existing workers and new hires.
The deal also included a written guarantee from Harley to stop planning for the expansion of power train manufacturing elsewhere. Harley power trains are only made in Milwaukee, where the company has more than 4,100 employees.
Harley spokesman, Bob Klein, said the company already had planned expenditures up to $250 million this year alone, on plants and equipment, so the $300 million target is on par with the company’s normal expenditures.”We are constantly growing and constantly doing projects,” he said.

The 2004 Dyna Glide Line Up
By Bandit |
Harley-Davidson continues to set the standard for factory custom style and performance with a four-model Dyna Glide line for 2004. For the first time, each Dyna Glide model will be offered with a choice of carburetor or electronic fuel injection on the 1450cc Twin Cam 88 V-Twin engine.
New on all 2004 Dyna Glide models are restyled fuel tanks that are longer than the previous tanks. The restyled tanks are topped with new, full-length consoles. The ignition cover and electrical panel covers have also been redesigned.
The EFI is a closed-loop system identical to that used on the Softail and Touring lines. It automatically adjusts for changes in air temperature and elevation, and offers fast, easy starts, hot or cold, with no choke. An idle air bypass system monitors engine speed and delivers a consistent idle that is scan-tool adjustable from 800 rpm to 1250 rpm. A knock-detection feature senses engine knock by monitoring ion sense, and retards spark to protect the engine should knock occur. A heat-management system automatically adjusts the engine speed and fuel delivery rate to help the engine run cooler and enhance rider comfort, especially when the bike is operating at low speeds or in a stop-and-go situation. A new returnless fuel system reduces fuel lines from two to one. EFI-equipped engines offer outstanding driveability in all environmental conditions, yet retain the traditional Harley-Davidson Big Twin sound.
FXD/I Dyna Super Glide
An outstanding value, the FXD Super Glide is priced to make extensive customization an affordable option. An American Legend Honors An American Hero With Remanufactured Engine
By Bandit |
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Aug. 11, 2003) ? Harley-Davidson’s Engine RemanufacturingProgram aims to give Evolution engines a second chance at life. So, it was fitting thatHarley-Davidson Genuine Motor Parts and Genuine Motor Accessories provided GaryWetzel with a complimentary remanufactured engine for his 1993 Electra Glide. After all,Wetzel knows all about second chances.
A highly decorated Vietnam veteran, Wetzel, now 55, was only 21 years old when hissecond chance came around. In January 1968, while flying door gunner with the U.S.Army’s 173rd Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam, Private First Class Wetzel and his crew were shot down deep in enemy territory. The next 12 or so hours would prove to bea defining period of time for the young man. While trying to get his injured commander out of the cockpit, a grenade landed only afew feet from him. The explosion ripped his left arm to shreds. Despite the horrific injuryand loss of blood, Wetzel was able to use a machine gun and keep the enemy at bay forseveral hours.
“You don’t quit,” he said recalling his actions that day. “I didn’t want to die, not in themud, not in the slop.”
Wetzel’s heroic actions distinguished him, not only in the eyes of his fellow troops, but inthe eyes of his country. In November 1968, he received the highest U.S. military honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor, from President Lyndon Johnson. Since 1861, morethan 3,400 Medals of Honor have been awarded to our nation’s bravest Soldiers, Sailors,Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, but there are only 137 recipients alive today.
Wetzel, of South Milwaukee, Wis., remains steadfast to his love of country and his militaryties. Memorial Day marked the 14th consecutive year that Wetzel lead the Rolling Thunderparade in Washington D.C. on his Harley-Davidson. More than 500,000 riders rode in theparade to publicize the POW/MIA issue and assist disabled veterans from all wars.
“I lead the parade off,” Wetzel said. “Everyone goes behind me. We have helped get theremains of more than 400 GIs back to their families so they can get on with life. Is itworth it? Yeah, it’s worth it.
“People don’t realize when you look at freedom and what it stands for, sometimes theytend to forget the sacrifices our forefathers, and men and women have given up for youand I to be here.”
At a time when our country’s liberty is once again being put to the test, it was an easydecision for Harley-Davidson to honor an American hero with a remanufactured engine.
“Gary epitomizes the true meaning of what an American hero is,” said Paul James,Harley-Davidson communications manager. “His story of survival is incredible. We areproud to have Gary be a Harley-Davidson rider, and his new remanufactured engineshould keep him on the road for years to come.”
“I’m extremely happy with the new engine,” Wetzel said. “The FLHTC had 91,000 mileson it and it was getting to be time ? it was starting to shake around a bit. But, I like mybike. I’m partial to it and wanted to keep the old girl around.
“The remanufacturing program is a good deal in the sense that you’re basically gettingback a brand new engine.”Launched as a pilot program in 1998, the engine-remanufacturing program allowscustomers to get back in touch with their bikes’ initial power and performance bytargeting all 1340 Evolution engines on Harley-Davidson motorcycles built between1984 and 1999.
The program’s design is easy and convenient for customers. Once the motorcycle is takento an authorized Harley-Davidson dealership, mechanics remove the engine, package it ina specially designed container and ship it to Milwaukee. The engine is then completelytaken apart and inspected. The heads, cylinders and flywheels are all remanufactured tooriginal factory specifications. In nearly all instances, components are installed into newcrankcases as original crankcases typically do not pass the inspection criteria.
All paint is stripped off, allowing technicians to further inspect engine components.Customers can choose between three finishes: Black and Chrome; Silver and Polished;and Silver and Chrome for their engines. The process comes with many new componentssuch as rocker boxes, gear cover, valve train, fasteners, gaskets, bearings and more. Aremanufactured engine with black and chrome finish costs $2,195, whereas the silverfinish costs $1,995.
As Wetzel prepares to ride in Harley-Davidson’s 100th Anniversary Parade, he said noquestion, there’s a definite tie with Harley-Davidson motorcycles and military veterans.
“It’s an American product, made here by American labor,” he said. “It’s a good feeling ?pride. You get on the H-D, it’s pride, and it?s American.”

AVON TYRE QUESTION/ANSWER OF THE WEEK–Suspension isn’t just about keeping your pants up!If you have a good suspension system it will work with the tires to give you a comfortable ride with a good responsive feel from straight up to full lean.
What many customers don’t realize is that a lot of systems get “sacked out” (read worn-out) in a year or two. When that happens the suspension can’t do it’s job so the tires end up taking a pounding every time you go over a bump in the road. This can cause cracks in the grooves and also wear out a tire prematurely. So do your tires a favor. Ask your dealer to check your suspension system and if it needs replacing do so with a good brand name suspension system. Help your tires feel supported!

FAT CAT PIPES FROM D&D ROAR ON THE 2007 V-RODS– Fort Worth, Texas, November 29, 2006 – D&D Performance Enterprises has completed dyno testing and is shipping the 2007 Fat Cat exhaust pipes and slip-ons for the Harley-Davidson VRSC family of liquid-cooled V-Rod power-cruisers.
The Fat Cat performance pipes are now available for the new 2007 Harley-Davidson 1130cc and 1250cc double-overhead cam, V-Rod engines. There is a Fat Cat performance exhaust pipe for each Harley-Davidson power cruiser including the VRSCAW V-Rod, VRSCD Night Rod, VRSCDX Night Rod Special, VRSCX Screamin’ Eagle and VRSCR Street Rod.
“The VR engine platform produces significant horsepower,” said Dave Rash, President of D&D Performance Enterprises. “Our D&D performance exhaust pipes are designed for enthusiasts to bump the V-Rod power and increase the low end torque. In addition, the design of the pipe offers a racier look as contrasted with the factory pipes.”
The 2-into-1 Fat Cat pipes are manufactured with show chrome and full wrap heat shields, which keep all discoloration from view. Enthusiasts can also select the black ceramic coating option as an alternative to chrome.
The entire line of D&D performance exhaust pipes for the 2007 family of V-Rod Harley-Davidson motorcycles are built with direct fitment that requires no cutting, welding or grinding.
The 2007 Harley-Davidson V-Rod pipes are torture tested on D&D’s state-of-the-art in-house Super Flow Eddy Current Ram Air dynamometer. This is done in combination with the Super Flow Bench and the first in the industry, multi cylinder Lambda Fuel Air Ratio Sensors, which are interfaced with the dynamometer for real time meter and graph analysis. This means that performance is always increased with a D&D exhaust pipe.
The dyno chart and dyno video with audio clip for the Fat Cat style Harley-Davidson performance exhaust pipe is located on the website in the catalog section at www.danddexhaust.com.
THE STEALTH UNDERCOVER REPORT FROM NC–Here we go heading into December, where has the time gone? Wherever it went it passed by too fast!
This weekend STEALTH BIKE WORKS will be at the annual C.B.A. toy run on Sunday. The temps are supposed to cool down but that is o.k., no rain in the forecast. It is always a great time and a great cause. There are a lot of families in the Charlotte area who are touched by this toy run every year and without there would be no Christmas for them.
Here at the shop we keep moving along and we are on the verge of starting our first shop bike. An SBW original. We are all excited about this project. We are going to put our own stamp on this bike.
All I am going to say at this time is that it takes me back to some Dave Mann centerfolds?
You know BIKERNET is a great meeting place for people. When the “YOUR SHOT” section got updated to the Forum, I really hated it, but now I really dig it. I am a big enough person to admit when I was wrong. It has turned into a lot of fun. There is a regular group of people who talk on there and it is almost as if you get to know them personally. To me that is the GREAT thing about BIKERNET, it has always been about the people, the staff, the writers and readers and of course the one and only Mr. so and so. I forget his name.
Hey, I watched the new V-TWIN series last night on Speed T.V. and the interview with Wino Willie was great. Wino was father of the BOOZEFIGHTERS M.C. way back in 1946. Those guys sure knew how to have fun back in those days and he truly loved the lifestyle. You could see it in the twinkle of his eyes and you could hear it in his laugh!
That is a wrap for this week!
Until next week, RIDE!

BIKERNET OPEN TO THE PUBLIC–I want to make one thing perfectly clear. Bikenet is open to everyone in our industry. We enjoy supporting the creative, artistic, wild builders and tame ones. We don?t discriminate, or support one group, club or organization over another one. If it?s newsworthy, from a new product or shop block party, we?ll post it. Just one thing holds us back?rip-offs. If we suspect a company of stealing product designs or ripping-off our readers, we can?t and won?t represent them on Bikernet. We may get the wool pulled over our eyes once in a while, but we keep the vigilance high.
That brings me to the next topic regarding the industry?sales. Rumor has it sales are down. Annually when snow falls sales decrease, so we?re heading into that season. A brother called the other-day and questioned me on this topic for his company, and I told him to draw a line down the center of a piece of paper. On one side of the line list the negative shit, like the weather, the price of gas, the war in Iraq, EPA regs and anything else he could think of.
Then I pointed out the positive aspects of today?s market: More motorcycling acceptance than ever before in history; more publicity and television coverage than ever before; a new population of younger riders; an active baby boomer population (touring bikes); in 1976 we sold over 1.25 million motorcycles in the U.S., we?re just scratching the 1 million a year mark today and Imagine how much the population has grown in 30 years. Bikes are more reliable than ever before; there?s more of a selection than ever before; more accessories and more magazines. In 2007 at least six new magazines are scheduled to be launched. Jesse James will publish two, Garage and West Coast Choppers. Dave Withrow kicked off American Cycle and American Bagger. Of course Primedia quickly launched Bagger and is testing the Girls of HOT BIKE, and there?s more. So look out. We are on the verge of a major motorcycle boom. Hell, next year Bikernet will launch Bikernet Television right here.
Hang on.

DRIVER SENTENCED IN FATAL CRASH–Robert Christin Streets, 23, of Haines City has been sentenced to 15 years in state prison for vehicular homicide, after a jury found him guilty in September of the August 2004 head-on collision that killed a motorcyclist.
At Streets’ trial, jurors were told that on Aug. 28, 2004, Streets was driving a Cadillac when he crossed the double yellow line on Polk City Road and struck a motorcycle driven by Bobby Joe King so hard that the motorcycle was shoved backward 247 feet from the point of impact.
King, 34, of Haines City, was flown by helicopter to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he died of his injuries. Streets was found to have a blood-alcohol level of .12, according to FDLE lab results. In Florida, a driver is considered impaired if his blood-alcohol level is .08 or higher.
Streets was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Donald Jacobson on Nov. 16.

BIKERNET BONNEVILLE TEAM MEMBER TAKES A CRUISE–Back in town after SEACRUISE. Saw the drawing for chassis. It might be a good idea to make a full size wall drawing of the bike. Wheel diameter, engine size so everything is proportional and no surprises. A cut out of the rider would do as well.
The past rider position was too high and not aerodynamic (free horsepower), ideal would be parallel with ground. A twin spar frame would actually be better (2 top frame tubes are to right and left of valve covers), which would bring the riders head closer to the valve covers. A low mounted fuel tank above the trans (touring) would also lower c.g. but would require a fuel pump.

NHTSA’S DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS–Attention taxpayers: The government employees whose salaries you pay are keeping secrets from you — they’re hiding information about auto safety defects gathered at taxpayer expense. Yes, public employees at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are sitting on more than U.S. automakers, of course, want the safety agency to keep it that way and, failing a wave of outrage by taxpayers, chances are that’s just what will happen. –from Rogue LAS VEGAS BIKEFEST CHANGES RALLY DATES–The Las Vegas BikeFest Partnership announced today that the dates for future Las Vegas BikeFest events have been changed beginning with next year’s 2007 rally. After nearly two years of analysis, surveys and discussions with industry stakeholders, the decision has been made to change the traditional date pattern for Las Vegas BikeFest in order to place the event during a period when temperatures are more conducive to traditional outdoor motorcycle rally activities. Beginning with the 2007 event, the event dates will be two to three weeks later then the historic pattern in the middle of September. The 20 year weather history for Las Vegas shows that average high temperatures during mid-September are 94?F – 96?F, and can often be over 100?F. A change by two to three weeks moves Las Vegas BikeFest to a period when the average high temperature drops to 86?F – 88?F – perfect rally weather. “The 2006 Las Vegas BikeFest had unseasonably moderate weather and both vendors and attendees have told us it was the most enjoyable Las Vegas BikeFest ever”, states Harry Schwartz, Full Throttle Events, one of the Las Vegas BikeFest partners. The Las Vegas BikeFest dates for the next 10 years will be: The 7th annual Las Vegas BikeFest will be held September 27-30 in the most famous 24-hour city, Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will consist of the Vendor Village at Cashman Center with over 300 manufacturers and vendors, and activities such as Poker Runs and competitions, and non-stop entertainment. Artistry in Iron, Master Builders’ Championship will also take place at Cashman Center. 40,000 bikers and enthusiasts are expected to be in attendance. BEWARE OF DUMB DRIVERS–The test revealed that about one in 11 licensed drivers in the United States would fail a state drivers test, according to GMAC Insurance.
Rhode Island ranked last year, also, with an average score of 77. Last year, Oregon’s average score was 89, which still placed at the top of the rankings that year.
Based on average scores, northwestern states generally ranked highest while the bottom-ranking states were mostly in the northeast. One exception was Vermont, which ranked third. Washington state drivers ranked second. Drivers in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia ranked at the bottom, with D.C. finishing just ahead of Rhode Island.
The 20-question test was based on questions asked in state driver’s license examinations. A score of 70 or higher is required to pass a standard state test.
The failure rate for drivers in northeastern states was about 16 percent, according to GMAC Insurance. The failure rate for drivers in northwestern states was from one to seven percent.
The test and an accompanying survey were completed by 5,288 licensed drivers including at least 100 from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The survey asked about responses to specific driving situations.
Approximately one in three drivers said they usually do not stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. At least one out of five drivers did not know that pedestrians in a crosswalk have the right of way. At least one in five also did not know that roads are most slippery when it first starts to rain after a dry spell.

JEFF HOLTER LOOKING FOR AN ART DIRECTOR POSITION IN THE CUSTOM BIKE INDUSTRY–My name is Jeff Holter, I’m a designer living in Michigan. I’ve been working in the advertising/marketing industry as a Sr. Art Director/Designer since the early ’90s, and have been employed by large agencies until September. I’m now out on my own and looking for something new to do with my life.
I have grown up on bikes, had my first Harley X90 when I was 8 years old. As an artist, it was only natural that customizing entered into it along the way, and what started out as painting my own rides became doing custom paint for everyone else. When I began actually building my own bikes, I was easily able to adapt my art skills (and some CAD classes in college finally paid for themselves) into the design and build, which led to creating custom parts. I’ve been doing this on the side since the mid 90’s and now have a few parts that are on the market.
I thought if there were some way to combine my art talents and industry experience with my motorcycle background, I would be a happy guy.
I’m not really looking for a job ( I have been freelancing since I was laid off and doing very well ) as much as I am looking for some thoughts and ideas. Of course I would consider any opportunity that may be available.
-I do concepting, design and computer illustration in my advertising and marketing field. My commercial portfolio is at -I design and build websites. This is something I do mainly for myself and motorcycle industry friends, but I do quite a bit of layout design and concept design for my advertising clients as well. -I design motorcycle parts. I like to design entire bikes, that way I get the consistency of the overall look I’m after, but I do end up mainly designing one-off parts for people. I have patented a couple of my own designs and currently market and sell them on my website (roadgearcomponents.com). You can also see some of my work on another builder’s site: DozerCycle.com. Dozer and I team up on a lot of bike builds (with me doing mainly component designs), and I do his website work as well. -Photography_I do my own photography (which you can also see samples of on Dozer’s site and my RoadGear site) and retouching. NEBRASKA RIDERS ON HELMETS AND TOURISM– ABATE of Nebraska has put out a position paper on how the mandatorymotorcycle helmet law has affected tourism in Nebraska. This is to bepresented this coming Friday to a statewide “Tourism Organization” thatasked us to attend and present our arguments for getting rid of themandatory motorcycle helmet law. First, everything stated is documented either in my computer or on theInternet. NO ONE can say we made this stuff up. Second, let me state that credit is given for everything in the paper(at least as far as I can trace the original back in time) and it waseither sent to me or found on the Internet. Third, I need to thank those of you who responded to my question at theend of last week. All that info helped. Fourth, I owe a HUGE DEBT of gratitude to Rainmaker, Duck and Celesteand my wonderful brothers in ABATE of West Virginia. Rainmaker plantedthis seed in my head and got the ball rolling with his survey. Duck andCeleste got me the information. Watch out for WV – they are poised tomove the mountains! And I look forward to running Hwy 50 withOUT ahelmet in the near future! As with anything I post to the Biker’s list…”What’s mine is yours”. Icannot take credit for developing all this information, but I did put itinto a verifiable and usable format. If you use it, please give ABATE ofNebraska a shout out…we could use some good hype.http://www.abateofne.com/Economic%20Impact%20Position%20Paper.htm –spotman

Man, I’m messing with the industry. This is the second week in a row we were forced to produce the news a day early. Tomorrow we’re rolling to Las Vegas for the Big Twin West, dealer show, open bike show and auction. For several years Advanstar has attempted to dial in this weekend in Vegas. I think a west coast dealer show would be cool and you can’t beat Vegas.
Let’s see how Dave Scott, formerly of Custom Chrome, handles the proceedings this year. I wish them the best. I would actually like to see it in October to promote Christmas bargains and help shops through the winter. But what the hell do I know? Let’s hit the news. I need to load bikes, feed the dog and kick the woman. Or is that the other way around:
HORSE TESTIMONIALS FOR HANK–We are doing a testimonial in the next issue of da Horseand we would like to include a lil text from you all out therewho knew Hank and feel the heavy loss like we do.

DAVE ZIEN APPRECIATION BANQUET–The attached flyer has information regarding the appreciation banquet being planned for Senator Dave Zien. He has contributed to bikers and veterans causes for nearly two decades. Please consider attending this wonderful program to thank Dave, or send a contribution and note personally thanking him for all he has done.
Right now, New York Myke, from San Diego H-D is planning on flying in to attend and speak (about Dave’s contributions to veterans). Myke rode with us to Wash.D.C. a few years back, during a Tommy Thompson Gov’s ride, when we dedicated several stones at the Viet Nam Memorial Wall. Dave, his friend Gino and Jimmy Boy carried these stones (pillow monuments like you see at cemeteries) all the way to D.C. on their bikes. We had about 250 riders with us on that trip.
Stormin Norman, President of the Low Riders MC, Staten Island, will also attend with Billy Eisengrien, the firefighter among three that raised the flag at ground zero (like the Iwo Jima picture), John Parham from J&P Cycles is working to make it here, and Tommy Thompson is expected to attend. Also, many state legislators and the Chairman of Veteran’s Affairs for Wisconsin, John Scocos. We expect a large number of bikers and veterans at this event.
I would love to see some motorcycle press attending and covering this. Rogue and Kit, are either of you able to attend for Easyriders? I asked Twiggy to speak to Dave Nichols about this. It’s going to be an historic event. I expect at least five and maybe more members of the Sturgis Hall of Fame to attend. Jim Putnam (SD) is planning on attending on behalf of the Lawmkers, and NCOM. Keith, it would be great to get you out of sunny California to visit Wisconsin in January. It doesn’t get that cold, not like Minnesota anyway. The hotel shares the parking lot with the dealership the event is at, and it’s a very nice place and they gave us great rates for this: $69. They’re giving Zien a complimentary whirlpool suite, since the owner met Zien once and was impressed by him. Attached is the flyer and registration form.
People can also register on line at Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo Bikernet is sending a donation and will write something for Dave. We are working with Bob Illingsworth to reach out to the industry and get guys to send donations to Dave. We’ll keep you posted. NORTHSIDE CHOPPERS WANTS A LINK–We offer free Link exchanges on Bikernet. Here’s how it’s handled… Sin Wu, are you awake? Northside Choppers HUGH KING APPEARANCE SCHEDULE, DISCOVERY LINE-UP AND TELEVISION NEWS–Also in case Biker Net is interested my schedule for the winter is fairly intense. San Francisco on January 4th, 2007 to send Dawn Narakas and Scott Webster on their way to the Easyriders show in Pomona. Hartford, Conn. on January 6th to give trophy away to either Brian Fuller or Greg Westbury at the Northeast Motorcycle Expo; The Baton Rouge Drag Race on January 13th to give trophy away to either Andrew Williams or James Compton (whomever wins the drag race there); Philadelphia on January 27th and 28th to make a two day appearance at the Northeast Motorcycle Expo; Boston, Mass. on February 3rd and 4th for the Northeast Motorcycle Expo; Then Fredericksburg, Virginia on February 17th and 18th for the Northeast Motorcycle Expo. So I’m gonna be on the move in the next few months. OPEN LETTER TO BUILDERS FROM HUGH KING–As you would expect many builders and their fans have contacted me about appearing on Biker Build Off. I apologize for not answering your phone calls and E mails sooner, but the last few months have been crazy. We’ve had to pull out all stops to get six new shows into production. And I’ve been on the road continuously. The six new shows in production will move from Discovery to The Learning Channel (Discovery owns TLC) The first of the six will air Monday, February 12th, then the rest will air on five Mondays after). Featured builders will be: Paul Cox & Keino vs. Trevelen.. Michael Barragan vs. Chica….Gard Hollinger vs. Jason Hart…Brian Fuller vs. Greg Westbury….Dawn Narakas vs. Scott Webster…Andrew Williams vs. James Compton. Many have asked, “how do I get on the show?” We select builders based on a number of factors. Number one are the bikes he or she makes. We tend to select builders who are on the cutting edge of the industry…taking it in a new or unusual direction. The number two factor is will that builder be dynamic on television? (Note: We’re making a television show with the object of getting as many people as possible to watch our show because if we don’t get the numbers, the Network will cancel). The sad fact is: a builder may be an absolute genius but if he or she doesn’t come across on TV, we won’t select him or her. Other factors are: geographical location of shop, has that builder been featured on BBO before? Would a certain builder be a good match up with another builder? (We trying very hard to have builders who build similar style bikes compete.) Another factor is: will a builder take the show in a radically new direction ie. Drag bikes, dirt bikes, Sport bikes. So you can see that there are many ballots which we throw into the basket, shake them around, eventually coming up with what we think will make an interesting show. And I have to say that the strong ratings which BBO gets indicate that we’re doing pretty good. Though the line up for the six new shows is locked, The Learning Channel has an option to order six more. However we won’t know whether TLC plans to exercise its option till February or March of 07. I appreciate your continuing interest in the show and please keep sending me pictures of your latest creations. –Hugh THOUSAND ISLANDS RIVER RUN MOTORCYCLE RALLY IN NEW YORK–Attached is the poster for our up coming event:The Thousand Islands River Run Motorcycle Rallythe Town of Alexandria Bay is hosting in June of2007. OBB WOMEN’S CLOTHING FOR THE WINTER–Denver, COLO-November 28, 2006-OBB Enterprises announced today exciting changes for it’s 2007 women’s clothing line. You may remember One Bad Bitch, a female-owned, women’s, motorcycle clothing company based in Denver, for their bold, sexy apparel with empowering sayings like “This Bitch Don’t Ride Bitch,” “Fuck Off! I Ride My Own,” and “If You’re Gonna Ride My Ass At Least Pull My Hair.”
OBB has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last few years and is excited about the new 2007 clothing line, which includes some more subdued designs with the classic sexy styling. The Ever-popular Black and White Raglan Tee is back for the first time in a few years, featuring the classic OBB logo and “One Bad Bitch” in black print, a true OBB classic, simply perfect. All new for 2007 is the Purple Bike Bra Cami, a cami featuring the OBB logo enlarged in the background along with a bitchin’ bike and “One Bad Bitch” done in purple in the foreground. This hot shirt offers a comfortable and flattering fit because of its cotton/spandex blend and built in bra and adjustable shoulder straps. Also new this year is the Crystal Logo Tank, a cotton, pre-shrunk, ribbed tank top embellished with the One Bad Bitch logo in crystals. Even biker gals need a little bling in their wardrobe.
Back this year by popular demand is the If You’re Gonna Ride My Ass V-Neck. This sexy, empowering shirt is available in a short sleeve, v-neck style with purple and white lettering highlighting the classic OBB logo on the front and “If You’re Gonna Ride My Ass At Least Pull My Hair” printed on back. This shirt is also available in plus sizes. Also back in 2007 is the “This Bitch Don’t Ride Bitch” tank top, which will also be available in plus sizes.
One Bad Bitch is a female-owned, motorcycle clothing company based in Denver, Co. Jen Berryhill, a para-legal, started One Bad Bitch in January 2004 when she had trouble finding clothing to match her own style and attitude. OBB has relied heavily on grassroots marketing and word of mouth to get its name out to the public and has been very successful.(970) 227-3588
RENEGADE BIKER MAG HANGING TOUGH–It’s been a while since we last communicated. I just wanted to let you know that I’m still hanging in there! I don’t know if you have picked up a copy of my mag at any of the events that you may have traveled to in the past year? If not let me know and I will send you a copy.
I am working on my third issue now, the response has been great, and everyone really seems to loves it! I’ve been doing this the hard way bumming rides from custom builders, sleeping on floors, borrowing trucks to make deliveries, even piling boxes of mags on the back of my Shovelhead, whatever it takes! I’m determined to make a success of Renegade Biker!

The Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary Open Road Tour Is A Tread For Every Sense, Sight, Sound, And The Sense-Sational!
By Bandit |
. It was a hundred years in the making and we’ll never see anything like it in our lifetime again. It’s huge (more than 25 acres), it’s truly an entertainment extravaganza (more than 12 bands on two stages) and it has something for everyone. On the weekend of July 20-21, at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Harley-Davidson Motor Company will officially kick-start its 100th Anniversary with the Open Road Tour: a series of gigantic weekend festivals roaring into 10 cities worldwide celebrating motorcycles, music, history and more. Once the Open Road Tour rolls to a stop in the Summer of 2003, enthusiasts can join the Ride Home, organized rides throughout North America heading to Milwaukee, for three days of celebrations and special events. The official birthday party will take place in Milwaukee on August 31, 2003 and launch Harley-Davidson into the next 100 years. But because the world has never seen an event the size or scope of the Open Road Tour it may be easier to look at it this way S It’s bigger than a concert – Every Open Road Tour stop will feature at least 12 incredible musical acts over three days. Tim McGraw, Hootie and the Blowfish and Bob Dylan are just some the big names already on board. It’s cooler than the Guggenheim “Art of the Motorcycle” – Elvis and Jon Bon Jovi’s Harleys are just a few of the amazing motorcycles on display. Everywhere spectators walk they’ll find multi-media displays revealing the colorful history of the Motor Company, never before seen machines and artifacts from the Harley-Davidson Archives, and even vintage motorcycle toys! It’s no county fair – Motorcycle drill teams and stunt riders will put on daily shows. Need an adrenaline break? How about a 2,000-seat cinema showcasing Harley-Davidson’s portrayal in the movies over time, or the children’s pavilion that has kids games and other entertainment for children like demo-rides on Fisher-Price Harley-Davidson ride-on motorcycle toys. And it’s got entertainment you can’t see anywhere else — There are also theatre-style shows including a high energy tap and rhythm spectacular and a biker fashion show you can only find at a Harley-Davidson event. “It’s hard to put into words,” said Joanne Bischmann, vice president of marketing for Harley-Davidson. “We knew that kicking-off Harley-Davidson’s next 100 years was going to call for something huge, something that couldn’t easily be described in words, but would be an unforgettable Harley-Davidson experience for anyone who participated. We think the Open Road Tour fits the bill.” SO YOU WANT TO LISTEN TO SOME GREAT MUSIC The Open Road Tour will feature different bands each day, in every city – and the music will continue all day long on two different stages. In July, Atlanta will be grooving with Steel Pulse, banging their heads with Ted Nugent, rocking with Journey and stomping their feet to Tim McGraw. When the Open Road Tour rolls across the globe, the musical entertainment will include other top-name artists including the Neville Brothers, Alison Krauss, Billy Idol, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hootie and the Blowfish, Indigenous and Bob Dylan. HOW ABOUT SOME HISTORY THAT WILL MOVE YOU The history of Harley-Davidson is rich in drama, passion and tradition. Open Road Tour visitors are invited to take in 100 years of Harley-Davidson history through multi-media and historic displays, which include: original artifacts, historical engines and an extraordinary collection of materials from company marketingcampaigns. Inside The Journey tent, visitors will also be encouraged to step into a story booth and share their favorite Harley-Davidson experiences. Starting with a re-creation of the historic shed where the company was born, visitors can trace the history of Harley-Davidson in all aspects, even an archive collection of motorcycle toys. A special pavilion at the Open Road Tour called The Machine will feature a stunning exhibition of select motorcycles from the Harley-Davidson archives. Many of the unique motorcycles featured inside The Machine have never been seen in public before. The Open Road Tour also features another special exhibit called The Culture which features Harley-Davidson’s distinctive style that has inspired people and popular culture around the world. Moving around The Culture, visitors will quickly become part of the world of Harley-Davidson, as they take in a look at Harley-Davidson in the movies, as well as a special exhibit from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Visitors will also be encouraged to try on the latest, as well as vintage Harley-Davidson MotorClothes. SIT BACK AND GET READY FOR AN ADRENALINE RUSH To get your motor running, the Open Road Tour will also feature motorcycle demo rides at all Open Road Tour locations. Visitors who are 18 years of age or older, and have a valid motorcycle license, will be able to ride any 2003 Harley-Davidson or Buell motorcycle of their choice, including the hot Harley-Davidson VRSCA V-Rod. For non-riders and riders alike, Harley-Davidson has also put together an extensive line-up of motorcycle action. From the skill and artistry of motorcycle drill teams, to the raw nerve of stunt riders, Open Road Tour motorcycle action is sure to rev the adrenaline of any on-looker. Visitors can also get a taste of the look that makes-up Harley-Davidson by attending special fashion shows throughout the weekends. SOMETHING FOR THE LITTLEST HARLEY FANS No one is either too young or too old to be part of the Harley-Davidson family and experience, especially at the Open Road Tour. Working in conjunction with Toys “R” Us, Harley-Davidson has developed a special children’s pavilion to satisfy all of the younger members of the family. Kids will even have the chance to demo-ride some of the Fisher Price Harley-Davidson ride-on toys. AND IT’S ALL FOR A GOOD CAUSE The Harley-Davidson Open Road Tour and other 100th Anniversary events will raise funds to help find a cure for muscular dystrophy and aid research and program services for children and adults with neuromuscular diseases. Since 1980, the Harley-Davidson family of customers, dealers and employees has raised nearly $40 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). “The Open Road Tour festival is going to give people around the world a chance to get a feel for what we mean by the Harley-Davidson experience,” said Bischmann. “During the Open Road Tour and other 100th Anniversary events, we hope to raise $5 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.” Tickets for U.S. and Canadian Open Road Tour stops are on sale now. To purchase tickets for the Open Road Tour, visit www.harley-davidson.com , www.ticketmaster.com or contact your local Ticket Master office. Tickets for Open Road Tour event stops are $55.00 per day in the U.S. and $75.00 Canadian per day in Canada. MYSTFREE FROM DOHERTY MACHINE–Finally a no nonsense cure for the dreaded Twin Cam oil mist dilemma. Tim Doherty, CEO of Doherty Machine, has just announced the release of what is certainly one of the most significant new products developed for the TwinCam 88 since its introduction in 1999. According to Doherty the single largest complaint of TC owners is the oil mist released through the engine breather system that ultimately ends up coating the side of the bike, rider and passenger. Until now, there have been a number of what amount to “band aid” patches for the problem but none have produced notable permanent results. In stark contrast to these temporary patch techniques, Doherty’s new MYSTFREE air/oil separation module eliminates the oil mist problem permanently! Both in house and independent tests have shown that the MYSTFREE unit eliminated 99% of the oil residue emitted from TwimCam machines in good mechanical condition.
Tested in engines ranging from the stock 88 up to 154 ci, Doherty’s unique device controlled virtually all misting normally associated with a build up in crank case pressure and inadequate oil pump scavenging. A direct bolt in replacement for the factory module, MYSTFREE can be installed in about an hour with no additional modifications.
There are currently a number of patents pending on MYSTFREE which retails for $229.95. For complete details call 928-541-7744 or visit www.dohertymachine.com
MERCHANTS WANT OUTSIDE SALES POLICY OKAY’D BEFORE EVENTS IN FLORIDA–DAYTONA BEACH — Partying during biker events might get started earlier here.Main Street merchants want the city to ease up on a rule passed four years ago to clamp down on special events. The City Commission on Wednesday will consider allowing year-round businesses to conduct outside sales during the seven days before biker events.
“They’re (bikers) here anyway,” said Kevin Kilian, vice president of events at The Chamber, Daytona Beach/Halifax Area. “We’re just saying we’re not allowed to capture that business.”
Since 2002, city commissioners have prohibited outside sales for seven days before and seven days after any special event, not just biker events. They hoped to limit the impact of noise and crowds on residents by preventing events from getting longer.
In recent years, bikers who arrived at Main Street before the official dates of Bike Week and Biketoberfest found themselves walking past closed outside party and vending areas.
Kilian said times have changed since 2002. The opening of Destination Daytona in Ormond Beach and activities at Daytona International Speedway have spread the crowd and eased the impact on residents. Main Street merchants want to compete for business with surrounding communities where activities start before the official event dates.
Wednesday’s proposal would continue to prohibit amplified outside music seven days before events. Outside activities would remain prohibited seven days after events.”Our thought was never to increase the days of the event,” Kilian said. “We would never advertise the event as being before the official event days.”He would like change effective for Bike Week 2007, March 2 to 11.
Frank Heckman, chairman of the Beachside Neighborhood Watch, supports easing the rules for the businesses.”Each year, it (biker events) become less of an impact, and there are less complaints coming from the community into the Police Department,” Heckman said.
Police spokeswoman Sonja Wiles said only one resident complained about bike noise. “The response was 99 percent positive,” she said.

JUDGE BARRED FROM PRACTICING LAW– ORLANDO – An Orange County judge who already was removed from the bench has been suspended from practicing law for three years.
Judge James Ellis Henson, 58, of Orlando, was suspended by the Florida Supreme Court for violating ethics rules on honesty, deceit and professional conduct, the Florida Bar Association said. He consented to the charges and has been ordered to pay $1,521 in investigative and administrative costs.
The charges stem from Henson’s position as an Orange County judge in 2000, when he lost a bid for re-election, and his private practice the next year. He was elected in 2002 as a circuit judge.
The high court ruled that Henson improperly practiced law while still a county judge when he signed a $40,000 contract to represent Diana Jimenez and received an initial payment of $15,000 on Dec. 20, 2000, after meeting with her at the county jail. That was after he was defeated but before his term expired in January 2001.
Jimenez, a native of Columbia, was charged with drunken driving manslaughter and other charges related to an automobile crash that killed two people on Dec. 16, 2000, in Osceola County. She eventually pleaded no contest and is serving a 16-year prison term.
Although Henson asked another lawyer, Robert Nesmith, to handle her bond hearing, he sat in the audience and afterward obtained bond papers from the judge, the high court wrote.
Jimenez testified that Henson implied several times that fleeing was an option upon learning she had a valid Colombian passport, although he did not specifically tell her to go.

SEND A THANKYOU CARD TO A SERVICEMAN OR WOMAN–Regardless of how I/we feel about war, I know what it’s like to be away from a loved one/spouse for a week or two at a time and I can’t imagine the guys or gals that are away for months and years, and we are carrying on our usual lives because of them. It really does only take a second to bring them a smile – hats off to Xerox!
If you go to this web site, www.letssaythanks.com you can pick out a thank you card (no charge) and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq. You can’t pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.
Please send a card.It is FREE and it only takes a second.

GIVE THANKS GODDAMNIT–The news is done and we’re kickin’ back, sorta. I want to run something past you, and for some reason, this might be a good time to think about it. I went Salmon fishing last year in Alaska, a wild experience. Talk about magnificent views. When we flew into Fairbanks we went looking for gear, supplies, you name it, so we went to WalMart. They had everything from fishing equipment to food, booze, knives and apparel, you name it. Later that bothered me-a lot.
I’m sure there were local Sporting Goods Stores, Markets, and Liquor stores. We cut out all the locals for the one-stop joint. Imagine if they start carrying bike parts. They already carry Jesse James bling and OCC Chinese toys. What if they ate this section of the market also? Just think about it, the next time you head to Walmart. Could you roll down the street and support a local auto-parts or grocery store?
So there you have it. Have a helluva holiday. I can’t remember when we’ve faced a more busy December. There’s the Big Twin West Dealer Extravaganza in Vegas, The Cycle World Show in Long Beach, the new Victory Touring Bike introduction, David Mann show in Ventura and Christmas goddamnit. Hang on.
Ride Forever,

TEES FOR OUR TROOPS–Some of our wounded troops are flown to our state-side military hospitals with nothing more than a hospital gown to wear. It is our goal to see that they at least have a BIKER shirt and a card or note waiting for them to say thanks and we love you and will be praying for you. The best way to contribute is to gather what shirts you wish to donate and box them up and deliver or send them to: Tees for our Troops We ask that you help us by sending only new or like new shirts, place them in a gallon zip-lock type bag, put a card or personal note inside and mark on the outside with a permanent marker the size. On the card or note you are welcome to put correspondence information and info about you and your club and maybe a photo of you and your ride. Donations to help offset shipping would be greatly appreciated. Maybe $1 or $2 per shirt. You may want to include a current biker magazine as well. (We can’t afford to ship all your old mags, thanks, though.) This effort was born in a conversation with a person with the USO. We are just sharing the vision and the blessing. We hope it doesnt offend anyone but our plans are to put a gospel track with each shirt and a New Testament Bible. Steve stormrider Betsill R-MAX USA BY ROADMAX SUPPORTS ST. FRANCIS H.S. CHOPPER BUILD–November 21, 2006, Ontario, CA – R-Max USA by Roadmax is assisting St. Francis High School in competing in the 2007 Donnie Smith Chopper Class Challenge by donating time, expertise, a transmission, chrome starter, 3-INCH open primary belt and a number of R-Max USA by Roadmax work shirts. The Donnie Smith Chopper Class Challenge culminates at the 2007 Donnie Smith Invitational Bike Show on March 25 and 26th in the Saint Paul’s RiverCentre. The budding Chopper builders from St. Francis High School design and build a v-twin chopper motorcycle from the ground up. Brent Stavig, St. Francis High School Metals Instructor, spearheads the program and has been overwhelmed by the response by the St. Francis community and the motorcycle industry. “It all started when we began welding up 50cc mini choppers,” explained Stavig. “Greg Stewart of the local Fat Boys Bar and Grill asked us if we wanted to build a real chopper and then donated money and assisted us in finding firms to partner with the kids. The result of this was an enormous amount of cooperation from the industry. Many companies donated parts, supplies, equipment, tools, knowledge and time to the project.” Last year’s chopper was called the Iron Saint and won the People’s Choice award at the 2006 Donnie Smith Invitational Bike Show. The 2007 Chopper is already in the works and will depart from the old school look of the Iron Saint with a more contemporary look of a high-tech chopper. “I have to hand it to Brent Stavig and the administration of St. Francis High School,” said Jaz Zbiegien, Sales and Marketing Director, R-Max USA by Roadmax. “They found the switch to turn the students on ‘I can see it in their eyes on each visit’ and create a real world environment where the students can perform, compete and succeed. Last year?s Iron Saint is an outstanding custom motorcycle and I am enthusiastically looking forward to the 2007 chopper.” Some of the companies and individuals that have assisted in the project include Donnie Smith, Brian Klock, Billy Lane, Jaz from R-MAX USA by Roadmax, Kokesh Motorcycles, S&S, Denvers Chopper, Crane Cams, BAD Creations, Hardtails, Isanti Performance Cycle, Mutha Country Choppers, Olson Radiator, House of Color, Precision Line Motorsports, Extreme Paint, Stacks Creative Customs, Wreck Bros Auto Body & Paint and Zylstra Harley Davidson.

FANTASY IN IRON AIRCLEANERS-The original, the best and finest. I’ve known and run Dennis Goodsen aircleaners on custom bikes for decades. Then at the LA Calendar show an industry acquaintance approached me with a flier. He had copied Dennis’ product and was attempting to market it. I questioned him. I don’t get it. Why not design your own air cleaner? Watch out for this knock-off product under the name Magna something.
Makes me sick to hear these stories and we’re looking into publishing a line of stories like this to keep honor amoung the ranks. There’s just a few companies in our market choosing to steal projects from small manufacturers rather than to design their own. We’ll be investigating soon.
In the meantime you can purchase the original Goodsen Air Cleaners from Irish Rich at Shamrock Fabrication and Lick’s Cycle.
