THERE’S THE PRE-STURGIS WRAP–All the good news and a handful of bullshit. Whatta ya want from me? Okay, here’s the bits I need to accomplish before the powder pours in. I need to install the Baker 1 in 5 drum in the 5-speed trans, so neutral will be at the bottom of the shifting curve. It’s cool for jockey-shift guys and you’ll see the tech on Bikernet.

Glenn Priddle delivered a new seat for the Sturgis Shovel. Very cool.

Next, I spoke to Larry from the Chop N Grind racing team and complained that I ordered 520 chains for less drag, and when the stuff arrived I freaked. The sprockets were dinky, narrow bastards and the chain wouldn’t fit over my Baker tranny sprocket. “I’ve got the secret,” Larry said lowering his voice. “Listen carefully. I’m only going to tell you once, and don’t tell anyone, anytime or anywhere.” Then the phone went dead. He ultimately told me to narrow my tranny sprocket on a lathe with a carbide bit. I’ll show you the operation.

More parts arrived from Harley-Davidson today and maybe I can start to fumble with the front fender notion. I’ll show you soon. We have a fastener sponsor, Derek and DMP fasteners. My wish list arrived today and we’re ready for final assembly.

GRAND NATIONAL BIKE SHOW COMING– Horse Power Promotions season finale is the Grand National Bike Show Oct.13th and 14th at the Cow Palace in San Francisco CA. This annual show draws the best bike builders from all over the west. Dozens of them will be show casing their latest creations.

Last year the 80,000 square foot show sold out and it has been enlarged to 130,000sq feet to meet the demand of the enlarged motorcycle market place. The show will feature everything 2 wheeled and all the add-on bling that goes with them.

This year’s tour has been one hit after another. Mays’ Motorcycle Madness had a record attendance. Hollister’s 60th anniversary reported increased sales and had the largest crowd by far, enjoying more vendors and entertainment than ever before. URGENT CALL TO POLITICAL ACTION–The Motorcycle Riders Foundation issues urgent call to action.US House of Representatives passes transportation appropriations bill (HR3074) by a vote of 268-153, with no restrictions on any motorcycle fundingthe Motorcycle Riders Foundation reports.

The US House passed the much needed transportation, housing and relatedagencies funding bill late Tuesday night without provisions eliminatingfunding for what is known as the Section 2010 motorcycle safety funds.

The day before debate began on this bill it became known to the MRF thatRepresentative Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) was going to propose an amendmentthat would have zeroed the funding for fiscal year 08 on the motor cyclesafety grants. The same grants that were welcomed by 44 states in fiscalyear 07. This amendment would have saved the taxpayers a paltry sixmillion dollars.

After hearing from hundreds of motorcyclists, some intense politicaladvice, and a healthy amount of careful consideration Mr. Hensarlingdecided not to introduce the amendment. Hensarling was faced with thechoice of potentially saving a few thousand lives or saving the taxpayersa few dollars. In the MRF’s view he made the correct choice.

The section 2010 motorcycle safety specific funds that the MRF and itssupporting organizations worked so hard to have included in the lasthighway bill (PL 109-59) remain intact and the popular grant programcontinues to be a success.

To put things in fiscal perspective, the motorcycle safety grant programaccounts for about one half of one one thousandth of this entire spendingpackage. “In other words, the motorcyclists are asking for chump changein the grand scheme of this legislation” Said Jeff Hennie, MRF vicepresident of government relations.

“What a great example of how motorcyclists get things done in WashingtonDC” Hennie continued. “Every motorcyclist who phoned in to their federalrepresentative earned and deserves the freedoms that we all enjoy”.

The $104.4 billion dollar spending measure is now slated to be debated inthe Senate, where no anti motorcyclists provisions are expected, and thenon to the White House for final signature under a potential veto threat.The MRF thanks all of its members and supporters and will continue to keepyou up to speed on all happenings in your nation’s capitol of WashingtonDC.

As for the remainder of Mr. Hensarling’s proposed amendments? They allfailed on the House floor. Maybe there is hope for wisdom in Washingtonafter all.

ANOTHER NOISE ISSUE–Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were.

A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back. Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall. When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have stung quite a bit.

The complaint: “Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 a. m., a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns early bird special? Any response would be appreciated.”

The response:

Regarding “A wake-up call from Luke’s jets” (Letters, Thursday): On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a. m., a perfectly timed four-ship flyby of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt Jeremy Fresques. Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day. At 9 a. m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend.

Based on the letter writer’s recount of the flyby, and because of the jet noise, I’m sure you didn’t hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and Parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son’s flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured.

A four-ship Flyby is a display of respect the Air Force pays to those who give their Lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects. The letter writer asks, “Whom do we thank for the morning air show?” The 56th Fighter Wing will call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and Parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

AMA FIGHTS MOTORCYCLE DISCRIMINATION–With five minutes of your time, you can help the AMA get legislation passed in Congress that will end health insurance discrimination against motorcyclists. The AMA is working to get HR 1076 passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. This bill would close a loophole that allows denial of health insurance benefits to people injured in a motorcycle crash, or other excluded activities, such as skiing or horseback riding. (A similar bill has also been introduced in the US Senate). If you’re not familiar with this issue, which can have devastating financial impact on motorcyclists and their families, read the article that appeared in the May 2007 issue of American Motorcyclist magazine. Look at the list below of members of Congress who have agreed to support HR 1076 by co-sponsoring this important legislation. THE GLASS RIDE OPENS AT THE STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM & HALL OF FAME–July 29, 2007 – – A year in the making, direct from Edinburgh, Scotland, glass artist Joe Stanaway’s The Glass Ride exhibit will open to the public at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 29th at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame located at 999 Main Street in Sturgis, South Dakota. The Glass Ride is a full scale glass sculptor replica of a “chopper” motorcycle with kiln cast and blown glass components.

Artist Joe Stanaway, a Helena, Montana native, has just completed his Masters in glass and architecture glass design from the Edinburgh College of Art, where he unveiled The Glass Ride in December, 2006. Joe says of his work and himself “I find it easy to be drawn into the look of custom motorcycles. They are very much like glass; the extraordinary use of sculpted chrome polished to a mirror finish, the heavy clear coating over a beautiful buffed petrol tank giving it a transparent glass -like quality. In life we have a tendency to feel better in groups. The group I ran with chose to express themselves on iron horses; I was the black sheep that chose the road of hot glass.” Joe will follow that road of hot glass to Dillon, Montana where he has accepted a professorship in the Glass Department at the University of Montana Western.

The Glass Ride will be on exhibit through the month of August and into September with a closing date that has yet to be determined. The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is open to the public from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday and Sunday, with special Rally hours of 8:00 am to 8:00 pm beginning July 30th and continuing through August 12th. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors 65+ and free for children 12 and under. The museum will be closed August 13th and 14th.

WILD EXHAUST TIPS FROM CRIME SCENE–Joe here from Crime Scene. I have some new exhaust tips I’m hoping you can squeeze into the news. I’d also like to start running banner ads on your site again.

The exhaust tips are called “Mordor tips”, they fit 1.75″ pipes and are handmade in steel, triple chrome plated. $89 each. I made up a prototype set for my shop beater, and several folks commented that they looked like something out of Mordor – from Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings”?and the name stuck. They certainly look the part.

MORE ETHANOL COMING– The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has expressed concern about unanticipated consequences of proposals that might allow gas stations to increase the level of ethanol in the fuel they sell.

Currently, pump gasoline in the United States can contain up to 10 percent ethanol, which is used to increase octane, reduce carbon monoxide emissions and provide an alternative to petroleum-based fuels.

But now, the state of Minnesota is seeking permission from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to allow the sale of fuel that includes 20 percent ethanol. And that has led to concerns about the effects on motorcycle engines, which manufacturers say are only certified to run on fuels containing the current 10 percent blend.

The difference could be significant, since burning ethanol creates more heat than conventional gasoline, which has the potential to damage air-cooled motorcycle engines. In addition, fuel systems on bikes may be susceptible to corrosive effects of higher concentrations of ethanol in gas. And while ethanol helps reduce carbon monoxide levels in engine exhaust, it can also increase the levels of oxides of nitrogen, one of the components of smog.

The proposal currently under consideration comes from Minnesota, but the AMA notes that an EPA waiver would open the door to the sale of 20 percent ethanol blends across the country, without any evaluation of the long-term consequences. With the limited number of choices at gas stations, that could force out existing blends and leave some riders without a suitable fuel choice for their vehicles.

The AMA is a member of AllSAFE, the Alliance for a Safe Alternative Fuels Environment, a group formed to ensure that new bio-based fuels such as ethanol are promoted in a thoughtful manner. AllSAFE is made up of associations that represent consumer and commercial users of ethanol blends, manufacturers of boats, vehicles, engines and equipment, and retailers who sell gasoline and ethanol-fuel blends.

GOVERNMENT ASKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE–(NHTSA) is asking for public comments on the Evaluation of State Motorcycle Safety Programs. The data are to be collected from State employees, in each State the State Motorcycle Safety Administrator and/or an employee of the State Highway Safety Office.

NHTSA will conduct a survey of State Motorcycle Safety Administrators and/or State Highway Safety Offices in all 50 States and the District of Columbia to gather data on state-level motorcycle safety programs. This survey will consist of a questionnaire in mail (paper and pencil) format, which will allow a telephone follow-up for further details as necessary. The study will use the survey to gather comprehensive data on what each of the 50 States and the District of Columbia are doing to promote and ensure safe riding behavior.

ASSALT WEAPAN FLAKE MAY MAKE RACING HISTORY– The flake is on it’s way by camel. Wait till you take it outside in the sun and you will know what I am talking about. It will blow you away. The flake needs to completely cover the bass coat so you can hardly see it. Put it on real heavy for the best effect. This bike will blow people away, just sitting there. I hope the painter gets to put the real rivets on the distressed panels. It would be badass.

Make sure the chicks gun and the guns on the tank are blazin away(as if shooting down another speed record).

I forgot to put a shot down symbol on the back fender like the fighter pilots used with last years speed record in it (to show it was shot down).

Like I said if the painter needs to talk with me feel free to have him call me. This is like having a baby and someone else is teaching it to walk for you, you know how it is.

It’s driving me nuts LOL. Let me know when you get the flake and what you think of it.

What a strange day. I can feel the Sturgis buzz in the air. Australians landed yesterday and tomorrow. I’ll help ’em find motorcycles, pack, then kick their asses out of here.

It’s always a good idea to take a shot of the parts before they get lost.

I’m proud to announce that we shipped the majority of our Bonneville paint work out yesterday, even though I’m still missing some front end parts from Harley-Davidson so I can make up the front fender and start on the fairing. Jim Murillo has already sealed the tank and is waiting a powder sample before he paints. I spoke to Air Tech about the fairing and hopefully they can help. They are the gods of speed fairings.

Let’s hit the news, then I’ll fill you in on any other calamities brewing around here and my list of to-dos before painted parts return. We still need a seat pan. Duane Ballard is waiting to handle the leather work. This puppy better go fast, it’s sure gonna look cool.

ON A SAD NOTE– We received a call this morning from Pete Alva, bearing the sad news that Chris Hill was found dead in his home yesterday. No confirmation on the cause of death or the exact time.

For those that knew Chris, knew he worked very hard, partied harder and played vigorously. He was the kinda guy you had to like as is, or not like at all. He put on a good front as a tough guy, but deep down he was a big teddy bear.

He overcame many adversities in life, such as a brain tumor that would have taken a weaker man, and numerous motorcycle accidents that only seemed to make him more daring and courageous. Or could he have just been crazy? He lost both of his parents and his brother too soon in life, which was a major source of loneliness for Chris, but still he kept an upbeat attitude.

Chris was an entrepreneur, a harsh business man, a successful business man and a friend that would do anything for you. Bandit coined a name for him, ?Mad Man? and it fit.

My prayer for Chris is that he is finally at peace and that he is with his family. We also hope that he is treated with respect and dignity by whoever handles his affairs.

FLORIDA DRIVER’S LICENSE ENDORSEMENT LAW–Florida Statue 322.12 Section 16 will require all applicants for a motorcycle driver’s license endorsement, regardless of age, to successfully complete a motorcycle safety course. These courses are offered by different companies throughout the state. The course registration fees vary and there is no cap on what they can charge. It is expected that prices will rise with demand. It should be noted that no other form of vehicle operator’s license requires mandatory schooling.

HELMET LAW IN VIETNAM, AND THEY THOUGHT THE WAR WAS BAD–Vietnam will make motorcycle helmets compulsory on all roads by the end of the year in an attempt to cut down on traffic deaths in a country where 90 per cent of vehicles are motorcycles. The government is expected to issue a resolution requiring helmets soon, according to the Transport Ministry, which approved the measure on June 6.

With a population of 85 million people, Vietnam has more than 21 million motorcycles but only 3 per cent of the country’s riders wear helmets, according to Asia Injury Prevention Foundation.

THE MANILA DOCTRINE– The Metro Manila (Philippines) Council’s (MMC), the policy-making body of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, has passed a resolution requiring motorcycle riders to paint their license plate numbers on helmets dubbed the “Dual Motorcycle and Helmet License Plate Numbers Policy.”

The MMC came up with the measure supposedly in a bid to curb robberies, assassinations and other crimes committed by motorcycle-riding men. Under the policy, the license plate numbers on the helmet should be on a water-proof sticker permanently placed on both sides of the headgear and should be large enough to be seen by the public.

The resolution also requires that the license plate sticker should be readable from a distance of 25 meters and should be placed 40 mm high on the helmet.

MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando said violation of the policy should be treated as a criminal offense, not a traffic violation. Violators will also be slapped with a P3,000 ($68) fine.

ILLINOIS TO USE PHOTO RADAR IN FREEWAY WORK ZONES– Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July of 2007. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00 ticket for the first offense. The second offense will cost $1,000.00 and comes with a 90-day license suspension. Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license, which allows insurance companies to raise their rates. The State will begin with two camera vans issuing tickets in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH. Photographs of both the driver’s face and license plate are taken. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN STURGIS THIS YEAR–The Fourth annual World Championship of Custom Bike Building will take place over August 5th-8th, with the awards ceremony commencing at 4pm on Tuesday August 7th.

Our new venue (and permanent home) is Champions Park on Lazelle Street, Sturgis, between 2nd and 3rd.

Set up days are Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th August, between 11am and 6pm each day. After killing time at the pistol range practicing my insurgent “good morning” tactics, I raced back to the office to check out what you had on the website today. RUCKER PERFORMANCE COLLABORATES WITHBRUCE ROSSMEYER TO BUILD NOSTALGIA MOTORCYCLES–FORT WORTH, TX (July 18, 2007) Rucker Performance announces another collaboration with Bruce Rossmeyer to build 30 Nostalgia motorcycles to be released in August.

Rucker Performance has started building 30 Nostalgia bikes according to the specifications of Elvis Presley?s original 1957 FL bike. Details include custom parts from Rucker Performance such as the primary housing, fuel tank, dash, oil tank, kickstart adapter and exhaust system. The Rucker Performance team has recreated a bike with authentic parts and accessories that uphold the integrity and style of Elvis Presley’s bike.

The hand-fabricated Rucker Performance primary housing is a hybrid of tin and cast aluminum, giving a new part an old look that is reminiscent of tin primaries from the 1950?s era. Additionally, the fuel tank is channeled, modified similarly to the old style two-piece tanks on FL models and redesigned for a FL style custom dash. Other details include a dimpled tank for the fuel shut off valve that has been added for aesthetic purposes only. Rucker Performance also has modified the oil tank to resemble the horseshoe-style oil tank with decorative 6-volt battery tops.

STURGIS READIES FOR MOTORCYCLE RALLY–STURGIS — Preparations for the 2007 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will be similar to last year’s planning, according to law enforcement, military and state officers.Early predications indicate if gas prices stay steady, visitor numbers should be similar to the 2006 event.Law officers plan to work 12-hour shifts during the week, with two ambulance crews on call. Also, the Pennington County 40-member special response team will be on call.

Pepper Massey, interim rally director, said preparations are going smoothly.”I think there are certain things that are set in place that we’ll continue. Keeping up with trends, we always want to be an event that would entice people to come. We’re always looking for new and exciting things,” Massey said.

So far, 90 vendor permits have been sold through the city of Sturgis. The state reports 200 vendor permit sales.

NEWS FROM U.S. CHOPPERS–This Monday, U.S. Choppers issued a one time only sale to commemorate their swap to major manufacturer Paughco. The sales flyer went out to U.S. Chopper’s e-mail list only. The deal was good on 20 frames.

Reportedly 7 frames were gone before the sale was even announced (going to big name builders), and rumor has it that the remaining 13 frames are slated to go to one buyer. The terms of the deal are still on the table and should be finalized soon. If this deal goes through, the sale will be over. This would make for an astounding 20 frame sale in less than 3 days. Who says the industry is flat on it’s back?

Rick Krost is quoted as saying, “With Paughco making our frames, we can afford scalability, very short lead times, and a quality product every time. With this alliance our clients and builders don’t have to worry about quality issues or factory support. KOPP AIMS TO GRAB ANOTHER GUN; LOOKING TO WIN THIRD CONSECUTIVE GREENVILLE EVENT– MILWAUKEE (July 18, 2007) – Oddly enough, Joe Kopp is happy being in ninth place of the AMA Flat Track Twins championship point standings. He said he could win more easily because of his current position.

No, the Wrecking Crew rider of the Team Latus/Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson isn’t kidding.

The 2000 AMA Grand National champion is the two-time defending winner of this weekend’s Twins race at Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Ohio and he’s aiming to get another gun.

“It’s the Annie Oakley Shootout this weekend and the trophy is a great gun,” Kopp said. “I would love to earn a third trophy from this event. It’s a cushion track that rewards great starts and I love surfaces like that.

“I also have the benefit of not being in a pressure situation when it comes to the points chase. We’ve struggled a bit lately but last week’s third place finish has helped restore our confidence and I know this team is capable of winning. We’re going to climb back up the points and hopefully win along the way.”

Some of the riders that might get in his way are Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth – the defending AMA Twins series champion and winner of two events so far this season – as well as Wrecking Crew riders Jared Mees and Bryan Smith.

Mees has earned three wins on his Blue Springs/Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson and currently leading the point standings. Smith has his Pat Moroney’s/Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson into fourth place of the standings.

Coolbeth finished in seventh place last year at Greenville but is more confident going into the cushion track after his second place finish at Lima, Ohio’s cushion surface earlier this season.

“We struggled with Greenville last year but we’ve worked a few things out for the setup we need for that kind of track,” Coolbeth said. “I owe that to my team. We’re working real well together and we’re in good shape going into this race. We’ve been consistent all season and we’ve already done better than last year when it comes to the cushion track. We did some testing and I think that has been paying off.”

Coolbeth won last weekend’s race at Saluda, Va., and he was surrounded by his Wrecking Crew teammates. Mees finished second and Kopp was third, earning his first podium finish of the season.

“It was so important finishing on the podium last weekend considering we didn’t qualify the weekend before that (Joliet, Ill.),” Kopp said. “It gives me a lot of confidence coming into an event that I like. The entire crew is happy. Just finishing as well as we did last weekend almost felt like we had won the race. It’s just going to get better.”

One of Kopp’s mechanics, Larry Zumbrun, is a Greenville resident and just makes the race more interesting.

“Larry was born and raised there and it’s always nice to do well in front of his home crowd,” Kopp said. “We’re feeling much more confident now and we don’t have any pressure on us. So we’re aiming for another gun and we’re not going to worry about anything else.”

COOLBETH TACKLES SALUDA – WINS SECOND AMA FLAT TRACK EVENT OF THE SEASON–SALUDA, Va. (July 16, 2007) – Kenny Coolbeth kept the Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew winning streak alive Sunday, winning the Joe Whetherly Memorial AMA Flat Track event at Virginia Motor Speedway.

Coolbeth earned his second win of the season and 11th of his career Saturday. The factory-sponsored Harley-Davidson rider has won two of the five 2007 events so far. Wrecking Crew teammate and current points leader Jared Mees has earned the other three wins on his Blue Springs Harley-Davidson and finished in second place at Saluda.

“Kenny and Jared are riding so well and they are keeping the points chase real close,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “It seems like all of the teams are stepping up their game and the Wrecking Crew riders are right there every race, trying to compete for every spot on the podium.”

The Wrecking Crew swept the podium for the second time this season (Lima, Ohio) as Joe Kopp and the Team Latus Harley-Davidson team earned third place – his first podium of the season. Wrecking Crew rider Bryan Smith and the Pat Moroney’s Harley-Davidson team finished seventh.

Coolbeth – the defending AMA Flat Track champion – is currently second in the point standings, nine points behind Mees.

“Jared won the last three races and it was our team’s goal to come in here and just finish ahead of him to keep the points close,” Coolbeth said. “I would rather be in the lead but I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. We just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing and stay as close to the front as possible.”

Coolbeth said the race was more exciting because he and Mees traded first and second positions throughout the night.

“It seemed like we passed each other back and forth all race long,” Coolbeth said. “I really wanted to work on my starts and get a better jump at the starting line. That happened and I just kept my head down all night long after that.”

Mees has not finished off the podium so far this season.

“I’m happy with the second place finish especially considering where we qualified (seventh),” Mees said. “We tried a few different things and we finally got caught up and put together a competitive setup for the main event. My team did a great job giving me a bike that could put in great laps and let me catch up.

“It would have been nice to make it four (wins) in a row because Kenny is so competitive and we want to earn as many points as possible. But we finished right next to him and that helps us keep this points battle going.”

Kopp, the 2000 AMA Grand National champion, was pleased to be back in contention for a race victory just a week following his first DNQ of the season.

“It was so important to get back to a race and finish in the top five,” Kopp said. “I was really feeling down in the dumps last week. I felt like I had let everyone down by not qualifying. But all of my sponsors and teammates were supportive and told me they backed me 110 percent. That really helped me work toward a good showing in Saluda.

“We had a great bike from the start and we didn’t have to change much beyond fuel and tires. That let me focus on riding and finishing well. It was great to be back on the podium.”

The next AMA Flat Track Twins race will be held at the Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Ohio on July 21. Coolbeth no doubt will be aiming to keep Mees behind him.

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE NHRA DRAG RACING TEAM LEAVES MILE-HIGH NATIONALS READY TO GET BACK TO SEA-LEVEL TRACKS–DENVER (July 16, 2007) – Eddie Krawiec earned a round victory Sunday on his Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson V-Rod at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Denver’s Bandimere Speedway.

Teammate Andrew Hines posted his third opening round loss of the season at the only altitude track on the NHRA POWERade pro circuit. The loss kept Hines from successfully defending his 2006 victory here.

The 24-year-old three-time defending NHRA champion said it didn’t matter where he lost – a loss is frustrating no matter where the location.

“It doesn’t matter if I’m at the U.S. Nationals or any other race on the circuit,” Hines said. “It’s always disappointing if you go out early. I treat them all the same and want to win them all and it’s unfortunate we couldn’t defend last year’s win.”

Krawiec beat Peggy Llewellyn in the first round. Krawiec turned in a 7.405-second pass at 181.57 seconds on his V-Rod while Llewellyn fouled at the starting line on her Karl & Kim Klement Racing Buell.

It was Krawiec’s fourth round win of the season and second consecutive second round appearance.

“With the way the point system is set up now, we’re always counting points,” Krawiec said. “Only the top eight riders get to run for the championship when Indy (the U.S. Nationals) rolls around and winning a round today helped us close the gap between us and that coveted eighth place.”

Hines posted a first round loss against Karen Stoffer and the Geico Suzuki team. Hines fouled at the starting line, losing to Stoffer for the second time this season.

Hines qualified in the No. 2 position with a 7.382 pass at 180.55 while Krawiec qualified eighth with a 7.405 at 182.28. It was the first time since the season opener in Gainesville, Fla., that Krawiec qualified in the top half of the 16-bike elimination field.

“I thought we both qualified well, not to mention how nice it was to be in the top half of the field and go into Sunday with lane choice,” Krawiec said. “I think both bikes were consistently making respectable passes in qualifying. This was my first time to race at such a high-altitude track and I’m still amazed at how difficult it is to run our bikes up here.”

Bandimere Speedway is the only high-altitude facility on the tour. While Krawiec knew the performance numbers would slow down, he never thought it would be more complicated than that.

“It’s so much harder to race at altitude than it is to race at sea-level,” Krawiec said. “Everything is so much slower, but the process of getting the bike down the track is still the same. Your routine is the same, but the process is slower and it breaks the rhythm that has been built up over the course of the first half of the season and it takes some getting used to. It was interesting and I’m glad we got a round win here under us today.”

Hines graduated from Trinidad High School and the Vance & Hines Motorsports shop was located in Southern Colorado for several years. The Screamin’ Eagle V-Rods were originally built at altitude. Still, Hines admits that he’s anxious to get back to sea level.

“The good thing is that Denver is over with for the year and we are going to be racing at sea-level tracks,” Hines said. “Denver is a great place and it’s where my drag racing career started, but it is difficult for the teams to prepare completely different setups.

“This is normally the time of year that our team really starts to come together, so I’m anxious to go to the next stop on the tour.”

Hines and Krawiec will next be joining the rest of the Pro Stock Motorcycle category at the FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway, July 27-29.

What she demonstrates is that the simple, popular explanations for the rise in motorcycle accident fatalities (like fewer states with helmet laws and more older riders who supposedly can’t ride as well) are NOT really borne out by the statistics.

CHARLIE BRECHTEL HAS THE EVENT BLUES, OR HE’S A PUBLIC PIRATE IN DISQUISE–The Ames City Council met this morning to discuss what they see as problems with the Street Dance we are planning and the Charlie Brechtel Band. Due to the increasing concern on the part of the city and the extraordinary costs they expect Team Tommy to assume in order to comfort them, we (Forrest, Tony, Rich & I with the blessing of the campaign) have decided to pull the plug on the street dance and concentrate on the parade. Because there is no way to undo all the advertising we have done. I have spoken to Jamie at Olde Main Brewery downtown Ames. Jamie is willing to host the Ski Band. I have put Brian from Thunderbolt productions in touch with Jamie to work out details.

I am asking that Members of Team Tommy and those who are participating in Tommy’s Reunion ride not patronize Zyltra H-D in Ames and instead, go to Big Barn H-D in Des Moines if they want to visit a dealership since Zylstra is the one who raised a red flag to the city. I’ve never seen a motorcycle dealer sabotage a motorcycle event before. This has turned in a ridiculous amount of concern over nothing.

Bottom Line: There will still be a party downtown Ames however we will not be blocking off Main Street and we will not be hosting the Charlie Brechtel Band. I am asking the businesses in the Main Street Cultural District businesses (who have been wonderful and supportive) to remain open late to serve the people who are coming.

TRUE TRACK FOR TOURING BIKES TO THE RESCUE–Hey, wanted to thank you again for the heads up about true track. I ordered it, and it got here in two days. Good people, looks to be a very well made piece. I got it installed but only have a few miles on it. Will give it a thrashing next week.

TERRIBLE CHARLIE BRECHTEL UNDER SCRUTINY– I am totally pissed at what has happened in Ames Iowa and the cancellation of the Street Party for Tommy Thompson. A lot of people have put a lot of work into this. Reports are still coming in but it appears that Zylstra Harley Davidson had objected to Charlie Brechtel performing at the event.

The police chief has also come up with demands of payment for extra officers that is totally unreasonable. Reports have him saying that Charlie has ties to motorcycle organizations and the police department was expecting trouble from these clubs and or organizations. If this type of action was done by anyone other than a police agency they would be arrested for extortion.

It should be noted that the Charlie Brechtel Band has performed all over the country at motorcycle and other charitable events and there has never been a problem. I am not sure at this time where the police chief is getting his information But it is sure bogus or possibly made up. It should be noted that the Secret Service has been aware of Street Party for months and they have not objected to it.

Motorcycle riders and the MROs have strived to get people involved in our democratic way of government by supporting candidates for office and now there seems to be a move to stop this or at least make it less effective. It makes one wonder if certain people in Ames are doing it because they support a different candidate and want to hurt Tommy’s chances at the Straw Vote. At this time I am going to ask people to not do business with Zylstra Harley Davidson and to also contact the Mayor and members of the City Council and ask them to explain their action.

TONY ON AMES, IOWA TEAM TOMMY EVENT–By now all or some of you may know about the turn of events at Ames, Iowa. The City Council decided to pull the permit for the street party we have been planning for the last three months. This was a result of our refusal to submit to blackmail and extortion tactics by the Council and the Chief of Police. We (Rogue and I) are looking further into this. We are also very concerned with the HD dealership there, Zylstra Harley-Davidson. We will encourage people to boycott this dealer and refrain from even driving by their location.

This is not so much a matter of security, costs, etc. as posed by the Council, as it is a matter of a very anti-biker attitude and perpetuation of the myth concocted by Hollywood concerning bikers and bike clubs. There is a deeper, more troubling concern I have that the City of Ames does not want bikers coming to town for the Straw Poll vote.

At least they are concerned that outlaw elements are coming there to cause trouble. What police intelligence (pardon the oxymoron) are they relying on for this conclusion?

My question is, what is the AMA or MRF prepared to do to answer this anti-biker sentiment? Is either organization ready to step forward and voice a concern to the City of Ames about the anti-biker attitude exhibited by certain Council members and the Chief of Police? Rogue and I are prepared to expose this bias through the motorcycle media industry and through email communications. We are both hoping that the AMA and MRF will come out opposed to the apparent lack of knowledge and inhospitable atmosphere toward bikers in Ames.

Keep in mind, this has been an event that was discussed and approved for some time. As recent as this week, we were informed that there was a growing concern for security, a need for extra police overtime duty, clean-up, payment for loss revenue of parking meters, and on and on.

Also, the H-D dealership has had direct input to the Council, depicting the band, the Charlie Brechtel Band, as an undesirable element of the program. Charlie is a friend of mine and I take that depiction very personal.

These concerns add up to no more than a thinly veiled attempt to extort money from us in order for us to proceed with our plans to participate in a political event. America is moving ever closer to a closed society governed by a heavy hand and steel toed Gestapo boots.

VALERIE THOMPSON 5-BALL RACING UPDATE–It’s been a while since my last update, and I’m glad to bring you up to speed. Hopefully you find this one worth the wait as it may be my most important one yet. The reality is I’ve traveled over 8,000 miles since the last time I wrote and my busy schedule delayed my Blog and also strained other commitments. With that being said, I learned more about being a full-time professional drag-racer and team owner. My recent lessons were taught from coast to coast and took course from St. Louis to Dallas to Atlanta to Alabama to Maryland to Indiana to Norwalk to Seattle for their respective events and recently home to Scottsdale.

Along the journey I became a better owner-pilot as VTR Team 2007 became a more rounded and experienced team. We’ve made significant changes along the way to our program and are much more prepared for 2008 and the exciting changes that will be announced once we’ve ironed out some details.

I’m now back at home in Arizona and arrived just in time for seasonal high temperatures in excess of 115 degrees. It’s too hot for testing so I decided to take some time off to enjoy training my new puppy “Reckon” as in the saying I learned down south “you recon?” My little sweetie is a 15 week old Maltese that I picked out while traveling to Washington for the “Kresto Pacific Nationals”. I’m also taking time to do local promotional events including a send off party at the famous “Billet Bar” in Scottsdale for “Dustin Cannon, 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles)”. I can’t think of a better way to send a freedom fighter off to war than a large turn out from the biker community and a special thanks to bar owner Myron for making it so memorable.

It’s about mid-season of the 2007 AHDRA race season and VTR Team 2007 is currently in 4th place in the National standings and in 2nd place in the Western division. Coming up on August 10th we return to Bristol, Tennessee for the “S&S Cycle Thunder in the Valley Nationals” where we hope to improve our standings and be reunited with some wonderful race fans.

After that it’s time for another attempt for another Land-Speed record and where Keith R. Ball from Bikernet.com and I will see his latest creation make it happen. Keith has worked passionately over the last year building “120-inch Panhead” which if all goes well, will become the worlds fastest “Panhead” at over 200 mph. The attempt will be on September 2-6th at the Bonneville Salt Flats. This incredible bike was built just for me and is longer, lower and much more aero-dynamic than Keith’s record holder “The Salt Shaker” we titled together with last year.

BIKERNET TRACTOR TRAILER DRIVER ACCIDENT–A tractor trailer driver lost control of his rig, plowed into an empty tollbooth on the Garden State Parkway and smashed it into hundreds of pieces.

While filling out the police and insurance reports for the damage he had caused, he noticed a crew of workers picking up each broken piece of the wrecked tollbooth and spreading some kind of creamy substance on it. Then they began fitting the pieces together. In less than twenty minutes, they had the entire tollbooth reconstructed and looking good as new.

Amazed at what he had witnessed, he asked the police officer, “What was that white stuff those men used to assemble all those pieces together?”

The police officer smiled and said, “Oh, that was tollgate booth paste.”

RUDY’S BIKE NIGHT DRIVE-IN THEATRE–The second Bike Night of the season is tomorrow at Rudy’s Drive-In, so make plans to have dinner and a Root Beer float at Rudy’s tomorrow night! Last Bike Night I ran into Randy Pehling and his posse from Rochester, Mn. One of the guys in Randy’s group came all the way from Brainerd, Mn. !!! Yup – Rudy’s Bike Night brings ’em in from far and wide!!

Regretfully, I won’t be able to attend as I’ve got a couple projects for a SSSpecial client with a Sturgis deadline, a helmet to finish for Scottsdale, Arizona’s Valerie Thompson and yet another helmet for my buddy, Pro-Stock Motorcycle pilot – Chip Ellis. So playtime just isn’t going to happen for the next couple of weeks for ol’ Dougie Boy! But don’t let that keep YOU from stopping in at Rudy’s!
