NEW BILL PROPOSED IN JACKSONVILLE–TALLAHASSEE — A proposal to stiffen penalties for motorcyclists who ride recklessly or at high speeds touched off a debate in a state House committee.

Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami, has proposed a measure that could lead to the forfeiture of violators’ motorcycles if they exceed the speed limit by 50 mph or more or are charged with reckless driving. The measure also could lead to their losing their licenses to ride motorcycles for 10 years, if convicted.

Lopez-Cantera told the House Infrastructure Committee on Thursday that the proposal is designed to address high-speed stunt riding. He played a video from South Florida that showed motorcyclists buzzing in and out of traffic at high speeds and doing tricks such as popping wheelies.

He said such riding endangers motorcyclists and other people on the road.

“This has become a plague in our state,” Lopez-Cantera said.

But the measure drew opposition from motorcycle advocates, such as James “Doc” Reichenbach, president of ABATE of Florida Inc., a group that has long lobbied on motorcycle issues.

Reichenbach said the state shouldn’t single out motorcycle riders for increased penalties, as it also has problems with people in cars driving recklessly.

“This is a discriminatory bill,” Reichenbach said.

The committee did not vote on the bill Thursday, and Chairman Rich Glorioso, R-Plant City, said he expects Lopez-Cantera to make changes.

Lopez-Cantera has already scaled back the bill from an initial proposal that would have increased penalties for motorcyclists riding 30 mph or more over the speed limit.

BOB, BIKERNET STAFF SHOP ASSISTANT, FORGOT HIS WEDDING ANNIVERSARY–Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary.

His wife was really angry. She told him, ‘Tomorrow morning I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in less then 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!’

The next morning Bob got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway.

Excited and confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, and brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.

Bob has been missing since Friday.

HOW TO BUILD A LOW-BUCK BOBBER–Well, the aftermath of the Holidays is finally (kind of) over, There was a major lack of time to do anything, we closed the shop to enjoy Christmas, New Years and even the Three Kings (wise men) day which is still celebrated in Puerto Rico and many Latin American countries.

At last, the first copy of the book is in my hands, proudly, the product of so many late nights, is announced to be out by February 15th at every major bookstore and some other stores (like Target, Wallmart and such) of course it will be also available through the internet and at my website, I should be receiving a partial lot of my book in the next couple of weeks and will be available directly from me (I’ll humbly sign them if wanted to)

Ahh… the book is called How to build a Bobber on a Budget published by Motorbooks International and written by yours trully.

I really am not the right person to review my own book… But, it’s more or less, some of the tricks and techniques that I have used at the shop for so long, also how to use your brain instead of a Platinum card and a catalog to build a cool, reliable motorcycle.

There are many plans of cool rides in the upcoming year, plus some book dates at different events.

Since I did not have the time before I want to wish everyone the best year ever, as we all know, things can only get better and more so right after the next November…

We are planning on another Haiti ride by Fall…

BUELL ULYSSES XB12XT IS EAGER FOR ACTION–New Adventure Sportbike Delivers Street Sizzle and Thrilling Touring.

EAST TROY, Wis. (January 21, 2008) – Imagine a motorcycle that is just as comfortable carving canyons as it is eating up miles of highway and back roads on a long distance tour. That kind of adventurous versatility is distinctly delivered by the 2008 Buell Ulysses XB12XT.

The new Buell Ulysses XB12XT model was introduced today as the second model in the Buell Ulysses family of adventure sportbike motorcycles, which possess the handling and soul to own every corner.

Boasting the intuitive handling and tremendous torque that Buell has come to symbolize, the XB12XT creates a stirring sport riding experience on a capable long-distance motorcycle. Based on the Buell Ulysses adventure sport bike, the XB12XT features a specially-tuned shorter travel suspension and lower standard seat height, standard tall windscreen, Pirelli Strada sport touring tires and standard lockable top box and side luggage cases.

buellxt

“The XB12XT will dish out considerable comfort and potent performance at every turn,” said Erik Buell, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. “The new suspension and many other features will let riders and passengers enjoy this motorcycle on all kinds of roads. It’s the perfect bike for zipping through the city, getting out to the country and back again, or the other way around.”

By focusing on paved road performance, the XB12XT suspension springs and damping were optimized to soak up road imperfections, which allowed a reduced suspension travel, resulting in a lower ride height and thus a lower center of gravity.

With a commanding riding position behind wide athletic handlebars, the XB12XT has a tall front screen to buffer the wind. Standard heated hand-grips warm the rider’s hands in colder climates. The grips are rated at 18 watts per side on the high setting and 11 watts per side on the low setting. The XB12XT has two 10 amp/12-volt accessory power outlets (on the dash and under the seat) and an integrated helmet lock for additional convenience.

The XB12XT provides the rider and passenger abundant storage space with lockable and detachable side and top luggage cases. There is also an additional storage compartment under the textured seat, while the 4.4 gallon fuel-in-frame reservoir gives the XB12XT substantial riding range.

In addition to its substantial storage capacity, the Ulysses XB12XT is also ideally suited for two-up riding with a comfortable passenger seat, innovative multi-function Triple tail backrest and sturdy grab rails.

The XB12XT features fully adjustable Showa suspension front and rear for ample ride comfort, agility and versatility. The 43 mm inverted front forks and rear shock with remote reservoir and dial adjust spring preload accommodate a wide range of riding styles and conditions, as well as passenger and luggage weight. A new progressive urethane bumper spreads compression forces to help absorb the rigors of uneven road conditions while the XB12XT is fully loaded. Overall suspension travel is 4.9 inches, while ground clearance is 5.9 inches with a seat height of 30.7 inches. When the road is exhilarating and twisty, the XB12XT is a truly exciting sport motorcycle, propelled by a 1203 Thunderstorm V-Twin that is growling with 84 ft. lbs. of torque and delivers 103 hp of air-cooled punch.

SUPERBOWL SEAT– A man had 50 yard line tickets for the Super Bowl. As he sits down, a man comes down and asked the man if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him.

“No”, he said, “the seat is empty”. “This is incredible”, said the man. “Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Super Bowl , the biggest sport event in the world, and not use it ?”

Somberly, the man says, “Well… the seat actually belongs to me. I was supposed to come here with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Super Bowl we have not been together since we got married in 1967.”

“Oh I’m sorry to hear that. That’s terrible. But couldn’t you find someone else – a friend or relative or even a neighbor to take the seat?”

The man shakes his head, “No. They’re all at the funeral.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPONSORS ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP—Harley-Davidson is Presenting Sponsor of UFC and WEC Events.

MILWAUKEE (January 19, 2008) – Harley-Davidson Motor Company has teamed up with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) organizations as a presenting sponsor and exclusive motorcycle sponsor.

“This is the first major worldwide sports sponsorship for Harley-Davidson outside the motorcycle/automotive category,” said Harley-Davidson Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Mark-Hans Richer. “We see our brand embodied in these fighters: young, aggressive, hard working individuals who cut against the grain.”

“Like Harley-Davidson, UFC is a true American passion that transcends cultures and languages, and shares incredible and growing popularity in the United States, Europe and around the world. Harley-Davidson is a powerhouse brand, we are proud to call it our exclusive UFC and WEC motorcycle sponsor and to have the historic Harley-Davidson Bar & Shield in the Octagon,” said UFC President Dana White.

Harley-Davidson’s sponsorship began with the UFC 79: NEMESIS event December 29, 2007 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, as witnessed by a sell-out audience of more than 11,000 and millions more on television around the world.

Harley-Davidson sponsorship of the UFC and WEC events includes its historic Bar & Shield logo placement in the center spot on the Octagon? canvas, as a press conference and weigh-in backdrop and in other event locations. In addition, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and advertisements will appear at other UFC and WEC events and locations. The Company is also encouraging its independent dealers to hold UFC “fight night” events and customer parties in conjunction with a limited number of appropriate UFC events.

The first such dealer events begin with UFC 80: RAPID FIRE, held today in Newcastle, England, which will be broadcast live at noon Pacific Time (3 p.m. ET) as “The Prodigy” BJ Penn faces Joe “Daddy” Stevenson for the UFC World Lightweight Championship.

BIKERNET BLONDE FILE OPEN–A gorgeous petite blonde walks by, and the man immediately gets anerection. The woman notices his erection, comes over to him and says… “Did you call for me?”

The man replies “No. What do you mean?”

“You must be new here,” she says. “Let me explain…it’s a rule herethat if you get an erection it implies you called for me.”

Smiling, she then leads him to the side of the swimming pool, lies down on a towel, eagerly pulls him to her and happily lets him have his way with her.

Finished, the man continues to explore the colony’s facilities.

He enters the sauna and as he sits down, he farts. Within minutes ahuge, hairy man lumbers out of the steam room toward him…

“Did you call for me?” says the hairy man.

“No…what do you mean?” says the newcomer.

“You must be new,” says the hairy man. “It’s a rule that if you fart,it implies that you called for me.” The huge man easily spins thenewcomer around, bends him over a bench and has his way with him.

The newcomer staggers back to the nudist colony office, where he isgreeted by the smiling, naked receptionist…

“May I help you?” she says.

“Here’s my membership card. You can have the key back and you can keep the $500 membership fee.”

“But sir,” she replies, “you’ve only been here for a few hours…youhaven’t had the chance to see all our facilities.”

“Listen lady,” the man replies, “I’m 68 years old…I get an erectiononce a month…but I fart 15 times a day! I’m outta here !!”

INTERMOT Cologne 2008– In 2008, INTERMOT Cologne (8th to 12th October) will offer the German and international trade even more services to ensure that planning a visit to the fair will be efficient, painstaking and in linewith the trade visitors’ needs. In addition tothe Dealer Card, a special admission ticket for trade visitors which offers numerous benefits, the new “Matchmaking” online service enables buyers from around the world to arrange their trade fairvisits in line with their specific needs during therun-up to the fair – and at the same time engage in a dialogue with exhibitors to request meeting appointments, product price quotes and information about product ranges.

An Internet-based communication platform, Matchmaking makes it possible for trade dealers to establish contact with INTERMOT Cologne 2008 exhibitors even before the trade fair officially opens. Thistool can be used to submit questions to theexhibitors – to one exhibitor, to a selected list of companies or to all suppliers in a specific product group. This is a great advantage, and particularly for major trade fairs like INTERMOTCologne, where more than 1,100 suppliers present thebreadth – and above all the depth – of the product range of the motorised two-wheel vehicles sector.

In 2006, for example, 506 exhibitors from 33 countries presented products from theparts/accessories segment; 299 companies from 25 countriesexhibited products in the clothing/riding equipment segment; and 254 companies from 22 countries exhibited motorised vehicles. With Matchmaking, trade dealers can quickly and easily gatherinformation about companies and their product lines. Theexhibitors then respond by e-mail, allowing trade dealers to make appointments for meetings in a targeted manner, even before the event. And it all can be done comfortably and conveniently at home orin the office, so trade visitors are assured ofmaximum efficiency when planning their visits.

IT’S GRAND NATIONAL ROADSTER SHOW TIME–No drinks or relaxing. I need to hit the showers and the wicked LA freeway system to Pomona in the rain showers. It’s grizzly out there, for It Never Rains In Southern California, bullshit. This show handles the judging more professionally than I’ve ever seen at any bike show. The judges have a check off sheet to categorize each entrant.

The owners don’t pick their class, the judge handles that. Then judging is handled very specifically, and each bike is “Judged.” That means I must fill out a lengthly form on each bike that’s shared with the owner, although he doesn’t see the actual score. It’s a lengthly involved process, but there’s no bullshit involved and the owner get to see the judge’s comments.

Bikernetmetricgreen

When we started the Easyriders Judged Class, I designed a judging form and coached the judges each show on criteria and judging procedure. All the judges need to be on the same page or the scores flounder out of whack. This show is handled much the same way, plus everything is documented.

There you have it. A Buell brake tech is in the works, our Bikernet Metric.com features are flying in and I’ll be around for the Sunday Post. First of next week I’ll finish the S&S Gear drive installation article and Humble will wrap up the feature on Dissel’s bike. Hang on. There’s never a dull moment around here.

EUROPE QUESTIONS THE ROLE FOR MOTORCYCLE ?TOYS? ON PUBLIC ROADS

A leading EU transport “expert” has questioned whether there is any place for motorcycles on Europe’s roads. In an official report from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), Norwegian Rune Elvik says: “In Norway, I believe all the most cost effective measures have been implemented – mandatory helmet use, strict licensing, engine tuning ban, daytime running lights for motorbikes. The question that needs to be raised now is whether there should be any place for these motorized toys in the transport system at all.”

On December 21, 2007 the Flemish Parliament in Belgium was presented with the ETSC report as a basis for legislation on motorcycle safety. However the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) Belgium, with the support of Members of Parliament, defended the riders’ position by using the Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations’ (FEMA), European Agenda for Motorcycle Safety, which highlights the importance of finding real solutions to improve the casualty rates for motorcyclists.

As a direct result of MAG Belgium’s action, the ETSC report was rejected and instead, MAG Belgium’s motorcycle-friendly program was adopted.

Motorcycle Action Group (MAG-UK) General Secretary, Trevor Baird, said, “Motorcycling is under constant threat from the European safety agenda. The introduction of this agenda has been thwarted in Belgium before it spreads further like a rash across Europe. MAG will continue to protect motorcycling and defend riders’ rights from whatever quarter the threat comes.”

MOTORCYCLE BAN ON PHILIPPINE ROADWAYS

Philippine lawmakers want motorcycles banned on main roads and highways, despite being the being the most common means of transportation in the island nation.

House Bill No. 3080 filed by Reps. Narciso D. Santiago III (Party-list, ARC) and Marcelino R. Teodoro (1st Dist., Marikina City, Lakas-CMD) seeks to prohibit motorcyclists from using major public thoroughfares.

According to Santiago, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that in many countries in Asia including the Philippines, deaths and injuries from motorcycle accidents are now considered a ?Public Health Epidemic.?

Dr. Soe Nyunt-U, WHO Representative to the Philippines also told a forum of the Department of Health on Road Safety that a helmet law would be the most effective way to reduce head injuries and fatalities from motorcycle and bicycle crashes. ?Road traffic crashes are the second leading cause of injury and death for all ages such that motorcyclists should wear helmets while on the road.?

Health Undersecretary for Health Operations Dr. Ethelyn Nieto supported the statementof Nyunt-U that helmet usage is vital to road safety. ?Road safety is a must with 3.5 million motorcycles in the country,? said Nieto. Records showed that motorcycles are now the third most registered vehicles next to cars at 66.3 percent.

SAFER CYCLING, REPORTS GOVERNMENT STUDY

According to the Compendium of Motorcycle Statistics, released by the UK Department of Transport in December 2007 ? an annual set of figures released by the British government – motorcycle traffic rose by 37% from 1996-2006 while the number of killed or seriously injured (KSI) accidents increased by just 8% (from 5,717 in 1996 to 6,151 in 2006).

The report also noted that speeding was only a minor cause of motorcycle crashes, repeating earlier findings showing that exceeding the speed limit is put down as a contributory factor ? and even then not necessarily as the main cause ? of just four percent of bike crashes where some blame is put on the rider.

The biggest factor is ?failure to look properly?, a contributory factor in 15 percent of motorcycle crashes, followed by ?loss of control? at 14 percent and ?failed to judge other persons path or speed? at 11 percent. ?Careless, reckless or in a hurry? also rates at 11 percent, but this doesn?t mean actually breaking the speed limit.

Despite UK Government figures showing as many as 25 percent of riders go more than 10mph over posted speed limits, ?Exceeding the speed limit? was jointly rated as the bottom contributory factor, alongside ?following too close?, also at four percent.

Other information in the report includes the fact that motorcycle riders are less likely than other road users to drink and drive, with just 1.5 percent of those tested failing breath tests, against an average of 1.9 percent for all road users.

INJURY REPORT SHOWS ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLES NOT CHILD?S PLAY

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) pose a serious risk of injury and even death, according to the largest study ever conducted of ATV injuries in children. The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

“Our experience shows that children’s use of ATVs is dangerous and should be restricted,” said Chetan C. Shah, M.D., radiology fellow at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.

While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 16 be prohibited from operating ATVs, no laws are in place in most states. ATV accidents are seldom reported because the vehicles are unlicensed and typically operated off-road or on private land.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), ATV-related injuries in children under the age of 16 more than doubled from 1995 to 2005 with 40,400 children treated in hospital emergency rooms nationwide in 2005. This figure represents nearly one-third of all ATV-related injuries treated that year. Child fatalities resulting from ATV accidents have also nearly doubled since 1995 with 120 reported deaths in 2005.

ATV-associated injuries can be caused by crashes, rollovers, ejections or even disregard of simple safety precautions. But according to Dr. Shah, ATV use by children is intrinsically dangerous because of the instability of the vehicles and the small size of children. While reducing the size and power of the vehicles and wearing helmets and protective clothing might limit some of the injuries, there still remains the issue of whether children should be riding ATVs at all.

“The question is a little like asking, ‘How can we make motorcycle use safer for five-year-olds?'” Dr. Shah said. “The problem is that five-year-olds should not be using motorcycles under any circumstances.”

CALIFORNIA INSTALLS FIRST-EVER STOP SIGN CAMERAS

While red light and speed cameras are creeping into our traffic system, California has installed the first-ever automated camera in the U.S. designed to ticket drivers who make “boulevard stops” or slow to a crawl at a stop sign without fully ceasing forward motion. The little-known Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority has begun issuing $100 fines long Franklin Canyon in the heart of Los Angeles, located off of Mulholland Drive, and another at the top of Topanga.

The cameras are being installed as a prelude to the park agency’s expected installation of speed cameras on popular canyon roads, despite state law specifically prohibiting their use. In 2000, the California legislature banned photo radar (CVC 21455.6) and per-ticket photo enforcement contract provisions (CVC 21455.5), but the MRCA believes the law does not apply to them. ?Our Park Rangers are California peace officers and will always have traffic enforcement as part of their duty,” MRCA Director of Public Affairs Dash Stolarz said in a statement.

Australian camera vendor Redflex will operate every aspect of the program in return for a $20 cut from every ticket the company is able to issue.

The stop sign devices are based on red light camera platforms, but they differ greatly in use. The more familiar stoplight cameras typically photograph a vehicle entering an intersection if a signal light changes to red between 0.1 and 0.3 seconds after the car crosses a stop bar line. With the new stop sign cameras, a machine will make calculations to determine whether a vehicle did not stop for a long enough period and deserves a fine.

BIKER?S SON SNUBBED BY MILITARY

When Jessi Lenti was 8 years old, his father took him to Canada’s Wonderland where he dressed up like a little soldier and posed with a toy gun. “Dad, this is what I want to do,” his father, Frank Lenti, recalls him saying at the amusement park north of Toronto. Now 23, Jessi has been rejected from joining the Canadian military because of his father’s long-time association with outlaw biker clubs.

“I’m the criminal, so why punish him?” asked his 60-year-old father, formerly of the Bandidos, Loners, Outlaws, Rebels, Diablos and Satan’s Choice motorcycle clubs. Frank Lenti made his comments from the maximum-security wing of a Toronto-area jail.

Jessi’s application for the military was supported by strong references from teachers. He also has a black belt in karate — and no criminal record. “This is me,” he said in an interview with the Toronto Star newspaper. “I’m myself. I’m not my father. Judge me for who I am.”

He said he was shocked this summer when an officer in the Canadian Forces told him that he couldn’t enlist because the Canadian Security Intelligence Service had concluded he was affiliated with organized crime. York Regional police Chief Armand La Barge said his force has never considered the young Lenti to have a criminal profile. “To the best of our knowledge, he has never been a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang and to the best of our knowledge, he has never been a member of an organized crime group or entity either,” La Barge said.

Jessi, who has a black belt in karate — and no criminal record — is appealing his rejection to the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Canadian military historian Jack Granatstein said he has never heard of a case in which the son of a motorcycle gang member has been denied membership in the military because of his family ties.

Frank Lenti had always tried to shield his son from his business; “I had a lot of fun but in the end you end up in a place like this,” he said Frank Lenti, gesturing at the cinder-block jail walls.

Ironically, Frank Lenti said he opposes the war in Afghanistan, and shudders at the thought of his son risking his life there, should he win his appeal and get into the military. “Why should we fight their war?” the senior Lenti asked.

Jessi said that he had planned since grade school to enter the military. “I’ve always wanted to do it, to serve my country. It was going to be a lifetime plan.”

WEIRD NEWS: VIETNAMESE BIKERS TERRORIZED BY ELEPHANTS

And you thought your local commute was bad? Three wild elephants that escaped from a wildlife preserve terrorized bikers in Vietnam, where motorcycles outnumber cars 9-1. The elephants crushed motorbikes in their path and stormed into residential houses.

In one reported attack, a biker transporting chickens had to abandon his motorcycle to escape, returning later to the carnage. “It was a frightening spectacle,” said Nguyen Van Phong. “The motorbike was a pile of scrap iron and 20 birds were completely crushed in their cages. Nothing could prevent these animals from doing that.”

Local authorities in Ha Tinh province said the wild elephants wandered out of Vu Quang national park during their mating season.

“We have not yet found out an effective preventative method,” said chairman Phan Duc Cung. “Killing the animals is not possible. People must be cautious of elephants, taking the initiative to avoid them.”

TOXIC TANNING

Imported leather products may be hazardous to your health, claims a December 29 report in the News Journal. With the reality of a global economy and different countries’ approaches to regulation, cowboys, bikers and other leather consumers need to be more aware of practices overseas and the journeys their exotic hides have made.

“Most of the leather that’s for motorcyclists is from Pakistan,” said Barney McCarthy, owner of Barney’s Leather on North Beach Street in Daytona Beach, Florida. In Pakistan, the leather is tanned with lead-based chromium, which can be an environmental concern. “Overseas in Pakistan or China, people are getting really sick; they just pour all the chemicals in the water and people drink it,” he said.

Tanning is the process that turns skin, which can decompose, into leather. It’s done using natural or chemical additives, or a combination of the two. Most American leather is tanned overseas, so even if a product says “Made in the USA,” that may just mean assembled here with leather treated elsewhere.

“The (Environmental Protection Agency) governs how we treat leather here, but not what comes in,” he said. “That’s why China can make toys with lead paint and they can come in here, but we could never make (the toys) like that.”

America produces “the best cowhide in the world,” but it’s generally sent overseas to tan because domestic tanneries couldn’t stay open — a few still work for shoe companies but that’s all he knows of, McCarthy said. “People buying boots from China, I’m wondering if it’s like putting on toxic shoes,” he said.

V-TWIN WINE REVIEWS–Newsflash! New Reviews of V-Twin Wines by Kens Wine Guide:

Wine Review: This V-Twin Zin motored into second place in our recent blind tasting of Zinfandels. This purple wine opens with a mild cassis and cherry like bouquet. On the palate, this medium bodied wine is round, velvety, easy to drink and has pleasant jammy cherry flavors. The finish is dry, has light tannins, and shows some length. This very food friendly wine would pair nicely with veal medallions or veal marsala. Enjoy – KWGTP

Poker Run Zinfandel:
V-Twin is a player in the Zinfandel market place. This is the third Zin out of 3 we have tried in the last year that we have recommended. This dark ruby wine opens with a mild black current bouquet with a touch of wood and vanilla. On the palate, this medium bodied wine is smooth as silk, well balanced, quite tasty, and has a pleasant blend of black cherry and spice flavors. The finish is dry and nicely extended. The panel felt this wine would pair nicely with pork tenderloin with a brown sage sauce or squab. Enjoy – KWGTP

WALMART WARS–We recently had a personal experience with Walmart. I flew to Alaska to Salmon fish and bought all my gear, food and drinks at Walmart. As I boarded the plane, to fly home, it dawned on me what I just did to the Fairbanks community and local businesses. I screwed them. Did you know that 80 percent of all Walmart products in the U.S. are made in China?

Then we received a report from Buzz Kantor about magazines being kicked off Walmart stands. So now they’re going to control what you read. Did you know that if Walmart was a country they’d have the 8th largest GNP in the world, ahead of Russia.

It comes down to a couple of things. So many folks in business are driven to enhance profits at any cost, without thinking about our country, community, or fellow citizens. We need to think long range and once in a while do the right thing. Chris Callen, the Publisher of the new Cycle Source Magazine wrote Walmart about their practices and they responded with an offer to sell his magazine, which could enhance his circulation as much as 30 percent. He turned them down. He did it for us, for all Americans who struggle to make a living. Read his Walmart report in the Cycle Source and shortly on Bikernet.com

Why can’t we start a chain of coffee shops that sport massive newsstands and carry a gang of magazines, newspapers and paper backs. Hell, they could even have a bank of computers installed with Bikernet on every home page. We’ll call the java stations, The Readers. Whatta ya say. Do we have an investor out there?

MORE ON DENVER BIKER WAR– I just read the article about the Rick Garcia fascist here in Denver. I sent the article to every customer and friend I have who rides. As of January 15th 2008 there will not be a Rocky Mountain Custom Bike in Denver and our money will stay out as well.

This idiot really has a thing about bikes, and what I can’t understand is how an individual has had the ability to have so much power and be so discriminating, and our city allows it. Plain and simple its discrimination and the ordnance isn’t practical or even realistic.

What about the car shows, hotrod shows, the new speed little zipper cars with their beer can exhaust. What’s good for the goose is good for everyone else.

Another beef I want to bring attention too is I have numerous customers who are police officers, who also ride, and not one of their bikes are close to being legal. They laugh and say they aren’t concerned with the new ordnance because their exempt. They stick together and won’t write one another a ticket. What the hell is that?!!!

It just seems to me that we have lost our rights completely here, and it could be coming soon to a city near you.

–Chuck Shortt

The Colorado Confederation of Clubs has been on this case since last Summer. Many of us have appeared on the “BIKER NATION” radio show, done interviews, talked to DPD, etc. It has been written up extensively in many publications, and has been challenged and for the most part shut down by the COC Attorney.

In fact, the first and only case I know of was thrown out by the judge.

Take lessons from how we dealt with this SAME issue years ago in Colorado Springs. we did it intelligently, professionally and QUIETLY and we won! It?s all a matter of record.

IF you guys really want to be involved join the COC http://www.colorado-coc.com

Baker

THE BAKER PLUS-ONE OIL PAN (P1P) FOR 1993-2008 FL?S:FOR COOLER OIL TO YOUR MOTOR–It?s lucky for ?93-?08 Harley-Davidson FL motorcycles to have an attached oil pan to the transmission, which so happens to be BAKER Drivetrain?s domain. Now BAKER?s renowned aura of dependability can find its way to the motor. The new Plus-One Oil Pan offers to the serious touring rider another way to protect the engine by upgrading the oil pan to something that holds a full quart more. BAKER Drivetrain, bent on riding with peace-of-mind through dependability, developed a larger oil pan that is designed to ensure cooler oil back to the motor.

COOLER
The 10? reduction (our conservative measurement) in engine operating temperature on an 80 degree day certainly helps ? especially if you?ve done anything to your bike to make it run warmer like motor hop-ups, blocking the motor?s air circulation, pulling extra weight, or sitting idle on hot asphalt in a crowded Southern summer bike rally in grid-locked traffic. Measurements by other parties found a 30? drop in temperature. Nonetheless, the P1P will compensate for your abuse.

The P1P keeps overall oil temperature oil cooler by designing more common sense into a simple container. First, it allows more oil to be stored in the system. The extra quart adds 20% more oil that the motor must try to warm up. Ultimately, it takes longer to get to peak temperature as well as keep the peak temperature lower. Next, the feed and return ports are on opposite ends of the pan as opposed to being next to each other. Thirdly, with the P1P the overheated oil is not only forced to dilute and cool as it travels from one end to the other, but the internal baffles on the P1P force it to also mix even further. Lastly, the cooling fins below the pan add additional surface area for the heat to disperse.

Baker2

BONUS! PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY
Since we were down there, it wasn?t too difficult to include a mounting provision for the Alloy Art TXR FLT swing arm stabilizer that prevents a wobble that many FL riders feel in the turns. We never skip out on the opportunity to offer more performance so we simply added this little provision. The P1P omits the bolt on trans plate and stand-offs that the TXR mounts to by providing its own mounting boss.

STYLE
The Plus-One Oil Pan is available in a cast form with either a polished, black powder coat or silver powder coat that is designed to match your H-D quite well. Also, BAKER knows the potential baggers have to be dressed-up nicely. We know that there are those who insist on the finest of finishes. That?s why we also offer a billet chrome version that is aesthetically perfect for those sticklers of good looks.

DAMN, IT’S BULLEIT WHISKEY TIME–Whatta day, and here’s what I have on tap for the next handful of hours, before I work out and hit it to Bennett’s Performance for a new set of Assalt Weapan throttle cables. We have a whole series of reviews on new biker books that I will launch shortly.

Dan’s Road Glide feature will hit the bricks before we’re out tomorrow. Last weekend was a blast and I hope it comes off half as fun as it was to stumble through two shows worth of segments. One involved my son, who has been clean and sober for three years, is a Deacon of his church and President of the Saints MC, a Christian club. He now curls more than I can. I’m damn proud of him. We interviewed him on the show.

We’ll bring you more reports as the show is edited and launched on Sturgis Rider Live.com and in the Bikernet Studio (now radio) department. Hang on and have a helluva weekend.

STURGIS RIDER LIVE FILMED AT BIKERNET HEADQUARTERS II– For those of you who didn’t know, last weekend Sturgis Rider Live brought me to Long Beach to shoot Keith Ball’s “Assalt Weapan” (yes the spelling is correct). This bike set the land speed record for the fastest Panhead engine ever built! The job description was to match the sticker on the front fender with an artistic touch. I think we got it.

I also shot Randy Simpson’s Bike. Randy is the owner of Milwaukee Iron, you might have seen his show on the Discovery Channel. While I was there they also filmed two episodes of Sturgis Rider Live with legendary bikers,

Keith Ball & Bill Hayes. Bill Hayes it the author of “The Original Wild Ones” I also got to hang out with Blues Legends, Charlie Brechtel and Deacon Jones! The editor for Hot bike Magazine was also there watching me work.

I brought three models with me. First is Marie, we used her for the replica shot. Then we had Kristin “Sturgis Rider Live Girl” and Felicia Crowton. Felicia is a Playboy Special Edition Model. Felicia is 33 and a mother 0f 4. They also interview me with Felicia, that should be interesting 🙂

All I can say is, what a weekend!

ANOTHER STUDY CONCLUSION FROM BIKERNET UNIVERSITY–At one time in my life, I thought I had a handle on the meaning of the word ‘service.”It’s the act of doing things for other people.’Then I heard these terms which reference the word SERVICE:
Internal Revenue Service
Postal Service
Telephone Service
Civil Service
City & County Public Service
Customer Service
Service Stations

Then I became confused about the word ‘service .’ This is not what IThought ‘service’ meant. So today, I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he hadhired a bull to ‘ service’ a few of his cows. BAM! It all came intoperspective. Now I understand what all those ‘service’ agencies aredoing to us.

I hope you now are as enlightened as I am.

WOMEN GOTTA PEE–Two women friends had gone for a girl’s night out. Both were very faithful and loving wives, however they had gotten over-enthusiastic on the Bacardi Breezers.

Incredibly drunk and walking home they needed to pee, so they stopped in the cemetery.

One of them had nothing to wipe with so she thought she would take off her panties and use them.

Her friend however was wearing a rather expensive pair of panties and did not want to ruin them.

She was lucky enough to squat down next to a grave that had a wreath with a ribbon on it, so she proceeded to wipe with that.

After the girls did their business they proceeded to go home.

The next day one of the women’s husband was concerned that his normally sweet and innocent wife was still in bed hung over, so he phoned the other husband and said:”These girl nights have got to stop!I’m starting to suspect the worst…my wife came home with no panties!!”

“That’s nothing” said the other husband, “Mine came back with a card stuck to her ass that said…..

‘From all of us at the Fire Station. We’ll never forget you.'”

WATCH WHAT YOU HANG ON TRAILER HITCHES IN VIRGINIA– RICHMOND, Va. – It’s one thing to dangle fuzzy dice from a rear view mirror, but decorating a trailer hitch with a large pair of rubber testicles might be a bit much in Virginia.

State Del. Lionel Spruill introduced a bill Tuesday to ban displaying replicas of human genitalia on vehicles, calling it a safety issue because it could distract other drivers.

Under his measure, displaying the ornamentation on a motor vehicle would be a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum fine of $250.

He said the idea came from a constituent whose young daughter spotted an example of the trail hitch adornment and asked her father to explain it.

“‘I didn’t know what to tell her,'” Spruill said the constituent told him before Spruill vowed to stop such displays.

“I said, ‘Sir, I’m going to be a laughingstock, but I’m going to do it,'” he said.

The Virginia General Assembly has some experience with offbeat bills. Three years ago, it drew widespread attention with an unsuccessful effort to outlaw baggy pants worn so low they expose underwear.

Spruill, 61, said the indignity of the “droopy drawers” debate wouldn’t deter him. He said he won’t hesitate to bring a set of $24.95 trailer testicles with him for a legislative show-and-tell.

“I’m going to do it,” Spruill told a handful of reporters after Tuesday’s House session adjourned. “I’m going to bring them out here and show them to you till they tell me to stop.”

THE BIKERNET OPTIMIST CREED–I always keep a copy of this under my desk blotter. It says it all. When you?re feeling down read it, goddamnit. It’ll do you good. It’s actually the Optimist Creed, a service organization that lives by this creed, and helps communities all across our nation.

Promise Yourself-To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Let it be written, let it be done.–Bandit

BIKERNET EXCLUSIVE WORKOUT PROGRAM–Hell, I thought I had a pretty good workout program going until I read this. Now what do I do?A guy calls a company and orders their 5-day, 10 lb. weight loss program. The next day, there’s a knock on the door and there stands before him a voluptuous, athletic, 19 year old babe dressed in nothing but a pair of Nike running shoes and a sign around her neck. She introduces herself as a representative of the weight loss company. The sign reads, ‘If you can catch me, you can have me.’

Without a second thought, he takes off after her. A few miles later huffing and puffing, he finally gives up. The same girl shows up for the next four days and the same thing happens. On the fifth day, he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost 10 lbs. as promised.

He calls the company and orders their 5-day/20 pound program. The next day there’s a knock at the door and there stands the most stunning, beautiful, sexy woman he has ever seen in his life. She is wearing nothing but Reebok running shoes and a sign around her neck that reads, ‘If you catch me you can have me’.

Well, he’s out the door after her like a shot. This girl is in excellent shape and he does his best, but no such luck. So for the next four days, the same routine happens with him gradually getting in better and better shape. Much to his delight on the fifth day when he weighs himself, he discovers that he has lost another 20 lbs. as promised.

He decides to go for broke and calls the company to order the 7-day/50 pound program ‘Are you sure?’ asks the representative on the phone. ‘This is our most rigorous program.’ ‘Absolutely,’ he replies, ‘I haven’t felt this good in years.’

The next day there’s a knock at the door; and when he opens it he finds a huge muscular guy standing there wearing nothing but pink running shoes and a sign around his neck that reads, ‘If I catch you, your butt is mine.’

He lost 63 pounds that week.

THE NEW GUNBUS–The idea to design an own vehicle – with all the consequences – is growing since quite a while in our minds. The question was, what kind of a vehicle (or even an aircraft) it should be. It should be something that is not available yet, where we got the possibilities to make it, that is ambitious to technics and creativity and that is correlated to our own history.
All these things made us design this motorcycle. The cylinders, taken from a 9cyl. radial engine, and their cylinder heads in that size with their filigree cooling fins appeared to be technical beauties. After having designed the needed crankcase and the auxiliaries the size of the motorcycle was given. To get a proportional tire size was not easy, but thanks to RIGDON meanwhile even this problem is solved. Instead of the originally planned Boeing 767 tires GUNBUS now stands on RIGDON custom tires. In size and form these tires are comparable to the aircraft tires and they have got the right – round – profile. Load and speed index are sufficient and adequate supply is guaranteed.

Last but not least we point out that this motorcycle will be build in small series and is offered for sale. Please contact us for further information.

New: Due to multiple requests we decided to offer GUNBUS with a sidecar. Further details and technical specifications will follow soon.

THE BIKERNET YEAR OF THE VET– We have devoted this year and next , and maybe many years to come, to supporting Veteran’s charities. I’m hoping to start a section on Bikernet specifically to contain news about Veteran’s charities, but I may need some help, a writer/contributor.

We were headed toward a raffle program with the Fisher Foundations, but they turned us down, due to questionable content on Bikernet? That’s cool and we will continue to look for a highly reputable charity to develop the raffle in conjunction with, throughout 2008 and 2009. So for now, with the help of a Chris Kallas Illustration, we will kick off a Veterans’ Charities department on Bikernet and support them all with news and info about each charity. Maybe one will develop into a relationship for the raffle.

If you are interested in helping, let me know. I need someone to research each Veteran’s charity and write about their activities, contacts and how folks can support their efforts. We will launch a story about each charity and give all our readers the opportunity to review each article and pick a charity that meets their desires for veterans. Then as the year proceeds we will cover charity efforts and activities. We’ll do anything we can to spread the word about these various charities.

Just drop me a line, if you can help or supply info about a veteran’s charity: Bandit@Bikernet.com

MORE THERAPY FROM THE BIKERNET HOSPITAL EDITORIAL ADVISORY STAFF– When you have an “I Hate My Job” day, try this: On your way home from work, stop at your pharmacy and go to the thermometer section and purchase a rectal thermometer made by Johnson & Johnson. Be very sure you get this brand.

When you get home, lock your doors, draw the curtains and disconnect the phone so you will not be disturbed. Change into very comfortable clothing and sit in your favorite chair. Open the package and remove the thermometer.

Now, carefully place it on a table or a surface so that it will not become chipped or broken . Now the fun part begins. Take out the literature from the box and read it carefully.

You will notice that in small print there is a statement: “Every Rectal Thermometer made by Johnson & Johnson is personally tested and then sanitized.” Now, close your eyes and repeat out loud five times, “I am so glad I do not work in the thermometer quality control department at Johnson &Johnson. “HAVE A NICE DAY AND REMEMBER, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSE WITH A JOB THAT IS MORE OF A PAIN IN THE ASS THAN YOURS >

THE SHOW WILL GO ON!– Euro 3 Homologation for Custom Chrome Europe RevTech 110RevTech? 100 and 88 to follow soon!

Wednesday, December 12th, in the afternoon at around 3:00 p.m. champagne bottles must’ve popped open at Custom Chrome Europe in Bad Kreuznach/Germany: They are the first aftermarket-distributor to crack the tough EURO-3 homologation. Custom Chrome Europe can offer the well-established RevTech 110 in E3-conform version, allowing to build new custombikes in a street-legal fashion for all the countries where those emission standards apply. You say that’s possible with the Milwaukee-made engine too? Correct, but: Thanks to intensive research and development – both in terms of time and money – the RevTech 110 has achieved EURO-3 emission standards WITH CARBURETOR!

Interested? For sure! “We have seen the EURO-3 task quite early and reacted accordingly, starting the development well ahead of the new laws,” explains Holger Mohr, President and Managing Director of Custom Chrome Europe, “since we offer our own exclusive motorcycle line, which has only two years ago been homologated for Europe, we had the duty in the name of our customers to take on the challenges of EURO-3. And we have acted rather than reacted.”

In fact, a lot of dealers and competitors smiled in face of the T-shirts “Euro 3 – Viva la Revoluci?n” that were printed for the November 2007 Big Twin Expo at Rosmalen. Especially since – at that time – most other distributors and engine builders just had a questionmark on their face and all one answer: “Our manufacturers are working on a injection solution.” Who’s laughing now?Basically, most engine manufacturers thought the homologation of a carburetor-fed engine for out of question, technically impossible – to many factors that influence each other have to be dealt with when emissions have to be minimised to achieve EURO-3. To achieve EURO-3 with an aircooled V-Twin is a difficult task, even with electronic fuel injection. Using a carburetor did yet seem completely impossible. It’s sad but true, people who make those laws do neither care about the technical consequences of their restrictions, nor do they care about the look and the style of motorcycles. Custom Chrome Europe does.

They know: Very few custombike creators could dig into the wide and complex variables of electronic fuel injection systems – as beneficial in terms of power and performance these systems nevertheless are. Bulky electronic components such as blackbox, sensors and cables are difficult to hide and are contrary to a clean look – even the lure of programmable torque- and power-curves does not attract then. “Electronics = Devil’s work” is programmed in the brain of too many old-school customizers who use their EFI, ABS, ASP and god-knows-what-else equipped cars every day.

V-twin riders are somehow more conservative and carry rather a screwdriver than computer-mouse and laptop. A fact that did not evade the CCE staff: “On purpose we did not choose the easy way, even though our path would be much more difficult and costly”, explains Mohr, “we have a very clear idea of what our customers want – and we go to extremes to give them what they want. Even if the solutions are off mainstream or thought impossible by others.”

euro cutie

“Reaching the EURO-3 emmision values with carb is a great achievement”, adds General Manager Andreas Scholz. “the RevTech 110 is the version with the biggest displacement on all of our RevTech engines. Thus, the EURO-3 homologation of both RevTech 100 and RevTech 88 is only a matter of time, not a question of technical realisation.”Technical details of the coup d’etat are of course kept confidential: Too much know-how and work had been invested to give it away. So much is known: Cleaning the wasted gas is performed by especially developed catalytic converters, of which no less than four are rumoured to be placed in the exhaust system. Along with a newly developed “Secondary Air Induction System” the emission limits are met. You don’t have to be a specialist to realise that the inlet side has to be modified somehow too. The sensational fact is: All this is achieved without additional electrical or electronic components. “We are not only the first to offer a solution to our customers”, explains Scholz, “we offer one without the necessity of advanced computer- and software knowledge …”

During the last years, the RevTech engine in all its finish- and displacement-versions has become one of the “top sellers” of the CCE engine program – one that is mounted with pride even in the most high-class customs such as Marcus Walz’ “TuNero” and all Custom Chrome Motorcycles up to the new “Cuba Libre”. “The Lamb 2”, the “Best of Show” bike of the dutch “Big Twin Expo” at Rosmalen – and the first European bike to win a ticket to the World Championship of Custombike Building to Sturgis – is also powered by a RevTech 88. As stated: The Show will go on!

RM AUCTIONS, IN ASSOCIATION WITH SOTHEBY’S, ANNOUNCES ITS TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO MARANELLO– RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby’s, is delighted to announce its next sale of historic Ferraris and Maseratis at the legendary home of the prancing horse in Maranello, Italy. Following two hugely successful European sales in 2007, the auction to be held on May 18, 2008, promises an exciting inventory of motor cars, headlined by a pair of ultra-rare Ferrari 250 California Spyders, and a selection of important memorabilia from Jacques Swaters’ private Ferrari Francorchamps collection, including a 1980 Ferrari “Pinin” prototype, the only four-door Ferrari ever built.

London, England (January 14, 2008) – The focus of the collector car world will return to Maranello, Italy in May 2008 as RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby’s, host their second annual “Ferrari Leggenda e Passione” auction event.

The much-anticipated sale, scheduled for May 18, marks the auction house’s third European event, following a record-breaking start in Maranello last year, and more recently, a high-profile sale in London, England where some 50 automobiles from the esteemed Bernie Ecclestone Collection, along with two other highly important European Collections went under the hammer. RM has an unrivaled position in North America, and with the London auction selling an astounding ?18.5 million GBP worth of motor cars, and our last Maranello sale achieving ?34 million, we have firmly placed our stamp on the European market.

The stars of the forthcoming May sale are two rare and ultra-desirable Ferrari 250 California Spyders. Regarded as one of the most valuable of all the road-going Ferrari models, less than 100 California Spyders were produced between 1957 and 1962 in a variety of specifications. The examples on offer – a 1958 LWB covered headlamp version (s/n 0923GT) finished in classic Rosso red, and a 1961 SWB version (s/n 2377GT) with coachwork finished in original Nero black – are estimated to achieve values in the region of $4,000,000 – $6,000,000 USD.

One of the earliest of only 50 long wheelbase California Spyders built, 0923GT was third off the line at the Maranello factory in July 1958 and delivered new to Johnny Von Neumann’s dealership in Hollywood, California. For more than 40 years it resided on the West Coast, changing hands several times before eventually ending up with a prominent British collector in 1999.

The 1961 SWB version was once owned by Academy Award winning actor, James Coburn, whose passion for high-performance sports cars was shared by fellow Hollywood actors and Ferrari owners, Steve McQueen and James Garner. The car has been meticulously maintained over its known ownership and includes extensive documentation relating to its restoration and maintenance.

The sale will also cater for enthusiasts of Ferrari’s more recent cars, with at least one iconic Ferrari Enzo to be featured in the auction line up. The 2003 example is one of only 399 examples produced of the 660bhp V12-engined supercars.

RM Auctions invites further entries for this sale. For further information, please contact RM Auctions’ London Office at +44 (0) 207 293 6336 or visit www.rmauctions.com

Maria: “Well Madam, there are three reasons why I want an increase. The first is that I iron better than you.”

Madam: “Who said you iron better than me?”

Madam: “Oh.”

Maria: “The second reason is that I am a better cook than you.”

Madam: “Nonsense, who said you were a better cook than me?”

Maria: “The Master did.”

Madam: “Oh.”

Maria: “My third reason is that I am a better lover than you.”

Madam (very upset now): “Did the Master say so as well?”

Maria: “No Madam, the gardener did.”

BIKERNET TECH QUESTION OF THE WEEK–hey saw the article thanks for putting it on there got a few questions for you…. im going to put 14″ or 16″ sky bars with 1″ risers on the night train when I get it. Now I would need +10″ cables and wires right… where in the hell can I get them J&P cycles and Dennis Kirk only go to 6+, and also do you happen to have any old bars and risers lying around would you?

Looking at about march for the new bike, and I plan on writing you a few techs over the winter of ’08 I’m going to put a new rear fender on it, bars, led run stop and sig lights, re-wiring the bars, moving the high beam switch to the right heal of my boot. The plan is to only have 3 switches on the bars: horn, right turn and left, internal throttle, putting the ignition switch on the top motor-mount, making my own foot pegs all kinds of shit is floating around in my head for that bike. so hopefully if all the cards play out right I’ll have it soon and can get to makin’ it mine… well later for now

Hey,

This is a wild day and you’ll love the News. It’s packed fulla crazed notions, wars, laws, new products, surprises and deals. I’m not kidding. Sometimes I hit the news as if I’m running a marathon. Sometimes it’s an uphill battle and others are downright inspiring.

Bulleitwhiskey

I’ve got to tell you that I always look forward to Thursdays, even though it means 14 non-stop hours until completion. I’m not going to pump this up into a hype about this 120-page news Thursday. Although, I will mention a new whiskey Sin Wu stumbled on at a Trader Joes. They had a stack of Bulleit Whiskey crates on sale. “I liked the bottle with the cork,” Sin said and brought home a jug. I took it to a dinner with the good Dr. Nutboy and we popped the cork. I generally don’t like any whiskey except Jack and an Irish Whiskey (12-year old) Tullamore Dew. But this hit the spot. I lost the first bottle to the Doctor and had to find another. As you can see I sampled this one.

Let’s hit the news:

A QUICK BIKERNET PHILOSOPHY SEMINAR–Take your seats. I’ve noticed that you can tell a lot about a person by the way they handle four things:a rainy day, the elderly, a motorsickle that won’t start, and being out of coffee.

I’ve learned that making a “living” is not the same thing as making a “life..”
I’ve learned that life gives you a more chances.

I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitton both hands.
You need to be able to throw something back.

I’ve learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you
But, if you focus on the needs of others, your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you.

I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision.

I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one.

I’ve learned that every day, you should reach out and touch someone.

People love that human touch — holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.

I’ve become aware that I still have a lot to learn.

With these covers, designed by Kirk Taylor, you just put a couple of dabs of clear silicone on the backside of thecover and you’re done. BIKERNET METRIC DEPARTMENT DELAYED ONE WEEK–Due to a new whiskey on the premises, the entirely new Bikernet Metric department and site was delayed maybe as much as 10 Days.

When staff sobriety is again a priority we will launch the new major Bikernet department addition devoted to the Metric Cruiser. Don’t hold me to it, but we’re shooting for a launch by the end of next week. That’s January 25th, the day I roll out to the Grand National Car and Bike Show in Pomona. I’m judging the bikes again. It’s the granddaddy of bike shows.

Waggybike

We have news reports ready to rock, our first bike feature on a junkyard 1980 Yamaha SX 850, a highbar tech, a road test or two and a handful of Jon Towle art. Plus we need to wrap up our home page logo by George Fleming. Hang On!

W8LESS ROTORS ARE SHIPPING AND MAKING NEWS–Yet more good news: W8less brake rotors meet or exceed FMVSS 122 standards?..PERIOD! This has been the case since completion of the 4th test several month’s ago. There is no need for any other testing to meet these standards. I spent some time with Chuck Greening this AM to confirm all this. Here’s some more detail of our discussion.

All FMVSS standards must be passed before a new vehicle can be certified as road worthy: it’s something Harley and other manufacturers must do. But in reality it is a vehicle certification of which the brakes are only a part of the overall system. Due to this requirement, OEM suppliers, like W8less are often required by vehicle manufacturers or builders to put their products through the FMVSS testing to confirm to the that they can meet those requirements before, not after, the manufacturer/builder considers them as components on the vehicle. This kind of component testing before the fact is totally optional from a Federal stand point??but only to the extent that the manufacturer doesn’t require it!

How did we do? Great! The two key tests are the 1st Effectiveness Test and Final Effectiveness Test which measure stopping distance at various speeds (30/60/80/115mph) of a single brake rotor (as opposed to a complete front and back rotor system) and compare them to minimum standards. The 2nd Effectiveness Test uses the same test criteria but changes the standards to reflect the performance of both front and rear brakes simultaneously. Thus the 2nd Effectiveness Test is not appropriate for our single rotor and yet when conducted found that our single rotor has essentially the same effectiveness of a double rotor system!

Here’s the results of the stopping distance test:

1st Effectiveness Test??simulates initial “break-in” of brakes on bike (only lower speeds)

30mph DOT standard =121′ W8less = 46.7′ 61% better than DOT standard

60mph DOT standard =484′ W8less = 162.2′ 66% better than DOT standard

Final Effectiveness Test??simulates post “break-in” period

30mph DOT standard = 97′ W8less = 45.2′ 53% better than DOT standard

60mph DOT standard = 388′ W8less = 188.9′ 51% better than DOT standard

80mph DOT standard = 689′ W8less = 328.6′ 52% better than DOT standard

115mph DOT standard = 1423′ W8less = 936.5′ 34% better than DOT standard

Bottom line: W8less brake rotors smashed DOT standards across the board! It is not a stretch to state that we stop 50% faster than the DOT standards. Why then all the talk about doing another test with a thermocouple in the brake rotor? It’s not mentioned anywhere in the FMVSS 122 test and indeed temperatures were taken as specified from within the brake pads. The reason given by Chuck Greening was that “??.we wanted to see what was going on in the rotor?..” apparently because of its ability to dissipate heat so rapidly. While perhaps an interesting engineering artifact, it is entirely unnecessary for W8less purposes or to satisfy FMVSS 122 standards.

NYC PASSES PLASTIC BAG RECYCLING BILL–Last week, New York City took a giant step forward in the fight against plastic. New York’s City Council passed a bill requiring large stores and retail chains to collect and recycle plastic shopping bags. According to a New York Times report: “New York is by far the largest American city to enact so broad a measure to limit the environmental impact of the bags. Altogether, each year the country is estimated to use 86 billion bags, which end up blowing down city streets, or tangled in the stomachs of whales, sea turtles and birds, or buried in landfills where they enjoy free rent for 1,000 years.”

Other cities like Melbourne and San Francisco have banned bags outright. San Francisco was the first city in North America to ban non-recyclable and non-biodegradable bags made from petroleum products. Africa has moved toward a continent-wide plastic bag ban, and just last week, China’s cabinet issued a directive banning their production, prohibiting stores from handing out free plastic bags after June 1st and imposing fees on their usage.

People in China use up to 3 billion plastic bags daily! Help keep the momentum going here in the United States and just say no to plastic bags!

ARIZONA SENATOR PUSHING HELMET LAW– Senator Julian Carroll, when he was governor decades ago, signed the first helmet law, but in recent years, lawmakers repealed that law. Now he says, because of the rising cost of health care, helmets need to be mandated again.

“Is that once they (riders) get injured, and their chance of survival isn’t that great without helmets, but if they survive, the state ends up picking up the bill,” says Sen. Carroll, D-Frankfort.

And, Carroll says many times the taxpayers end up ultimately paying more. But he says passing a helmet law isn’t very likely this session, because many lawmakers oppose the bill.

Carroll says some say helmets restrict the ability of riders to turn their heads and see traffic. Others tell him they don’t agree with his assessment of higher health costs because crash victims can’t pay for their own life long care.

“What I’m talking about is those individuals who end up getting a head injury and it’s so significant that they require hospitalization or care the rest of their lives,” says Carroll.

I find this statement below offensive and prejudice against the motorcycle community. For the lack of research you as the author of this article is very one-sided and a great disappointment in your report on this subject.. “but if they survive, the state ends up picking up the bill,” says Sen. Carroll, D-Frankfort.”

1. There is not a list of approved helmets, NO LIST-NOW LAW!

2. NHTSA and NTSB and DOT do NOT certify or approve helmets. This is left up toeach helmet manufacturer.

3. NHTSA contracts Performance Test ONLY according to of a hand full of helmets each year ( not always the case) from May through September. There are thousands of helmets in the NHTSA data base, a number of these are still being sold on the shelf today, this does NOT include counterfeit helmets. For the NHTSA and the NTSB to continue this thirty year+ BAND-AID for all the Amputee, Paraplegic, TBI, Blunt Force Trauma survivors isas antiquated as the test equipment and helmet debate they use today.

4. VMT (Vehicle Miles Traveled) is the basis for motorcycle Injuries and Fatalities. This data is skewed and inaccurate as stated by both the NHTSA and the NTSB, and DOT. NOT every state has participated in collecting this data over the last thirty+ years….

BIKERNET TECH OF THE WEEK, RHINO COATINGS FOR BIKES–I’m writing 1- to wish you a great and successful New Year and 2, I saw a very impressive product demonstration on TV recently.

About two years ago I goaded two of my friends to spray their bikes with Rhino Liner truck bed coating since the flat and denim black finishes were very popular anyway. One owned a Buell and the other a 1200 Sporty. Both on plastic and sheet metal the finishes were aesthetically perfect (professionally applied of course). The durability had yet to be tested.

The Buell had a low speed lay down about six months later that resulted in faint surface scratching (at 35 mph). The Sporty, after having a girder front end installed without modifying the kickstand, had a tendency to fall over standing in moderate to high wind conditions. The owner actually bragged about his bike being able to get kicked over, not get a single nick or scratch and fire up and run. It’s hit the deck 10-12 times without a single noticeable defect in the finish.

Now onto the show. Discovery Channel has a new show called Smash Lab coming on this and every Wednesday after. The preview I saw had them trying to test the true capacity of Rhino Liner and whether it could be used to protect buildings from collapsing when explosives are used.

They rigged up a pickup truck with ALOT of explosives without the liner, the results need to be seen to truly appreciate the excess of damage. Another truck with the liner and the same blast did extraordinarily well. They also hit it with buckshot at close range and as a concrete wall liner. All with varying degrees of success, but all impressive.

If you find time check it out or tape it. It’s pretty cool. And I’ve seen first hand how tough this shit really is. For the price (Both my buddies paid $150 for their skins and tins each) you really can’t beat the look, durability or protection (sparking or shearing on impact) offered by this product.

Enjoy and thanks again for the help with that ’07 Sportster clutch effort issue, my customer is very satisfied. Hope to see you and Jared Peterson at Bike Week.

no spill

THE BUCKSHOT PRODUCT REVIEW– How many times have ya tried to squeeze that last few drops of dead dinosaur inta yer gas tank an’ only succeeded in dribblin’ it down yer paint job like slobber from a droolin’ dog? Yeah, I thought so. I’ve tried pullin’ the little rubber boot on the nozzle back, but then it won’t shut off by itself, an’ before ya know it, gas is sprayin’ all over like a shook-up beer. Not only is that bad fer yer wax job, but every drop ya spill is just more money in the OPEC boys’ pockets. Plus, if yer like me, ya just hate buyin’ another rattle-can of Rustoleum ta do a re-paint on yer scoot every time ya fill up!

no spill 2

The other day, I ran across a handy little gadget that’s helped me solve the problem of gettin’ my tank full while keepin’ gas off my paint. It’s called Big Al’s McCuff. Ya just slip it on the nozzle before ya stick the nozzle in yer tank, an’ it lets ya fill up right ta the brim without spillin’ a drop. If you’ve got a hotrod, a boat, or most anything that takes gasoline, the McCuff will work on it, too. It even comes with its own carryin’ case. Their website; www.mccuff.com, has a press release an’ a video showin’ ya the McCuff in action.

I took the McCuff ta the gas station, followed the instructions, an’ it worked just like it’s supposed to. (It’ll also save me a bundle on rattle-cans an’ maskin’ tape!)

The McCuff retails for $23.95, but if ya head on over ta their website, they’ll make ya a special deal on yours! Or call ’em at 1-888-762-2833.

MAXINE SAYS THIS ABOUT MINORITIES– We need to show more sympathy for these people.

They travel miles in the heat.
They risk their lives crossing a border.
They don’t get paid enough wages.
They do jobs that others won’t do or are afraid to do.
They live in crowded conditions among a people who speak a different language.
They rarely see their families, and they face adversity all day, every day.

I’m not talking about illegal Mexicans;
I’m talking about our troops!

Doesn’t it seem strange that many Democrats and Republicans are willing to lavish all kinds of social benefits on illegal’s, but don’t support our troops and their families with sufficient healthcare, rehabilitation facilities, retraining and education when they return.

cutie

Whatta Week,

I’m stressing. The sun hasn’t been out in days, and I’m beginning to get a sense of winters in Seattle. I like those warm rays. My stress level is exaggerated this week ’cause we’re filming the Sturgis Rider Live Talk Show at the Bikernet Headquarters on Saturday, and I’m the goddamn host. How the hell did I get wrapped up in this? Our guests include the Executive Editor of Hot Bike, Eric “the quiet man” Ellis, Deacon Jones, blues legend, Gard Hollinger of LA Chop Rods, and Sin Wu in the Kitchen, plus the Charlie Brechtel Biker Blues Band.

Something that eases the stress is all the good shit flying around this industry. A Hamster brother of mine, Jim Waggaman, of Air Streem Studios, and his co-worker Chris built a custom 1980 Yamaha SX for a shop helper who was down on his luck. We will feature it next week and it will be the first bike feature posted in the Bikernet Metric area due to be launched in January.

The Bikernet crew did the same for a longtime writer in this industry who had to sell his motorcycle to pay the rent. We dug up a Sportster and got him back on the road. So you’ll witness more articles on Sportsters over the coming months.

Finally Dr. Terry notified me that Time Magazine (Dec. 7) touted the custom motorcycle industry as a cool find for enhancing collections, and they spoke of Roger Bourget and Desmosedici RR as wild builders to consider. In the same month Forbes exclaimed the same virtues on our industry with Kid Rock, Russel Mitchell and Paul Cox as examples of fine two-wheeled artists. I didn’t know Kid Rock built bikes? So with that, and the fact that the bizarre liquor, Absinthe, is back after a 95-year ban, let’s hit the news:

HORST DOES IT AGAIN, BONNEVILLE BOOK ON THE FASTEST MOTORCYCLES ON EARTH–It is the great white emptiness in the middle of the Utah desert, with the gleaming bright lights of historic Wendover on the horizon: The Bonneville Salt Flats. For six decades, speed freaks from all over the world have met at this place to push the limits one step, one mile one kilometer further – using cars, trucks, rockets, streamliners and: motorcycles. Renowned motorcycle and custombike journalist Horst R?sler (Roesler) attended his first SCTA Speed Trials at Bonneville in 2000 – and immediately fell for the fascination of Land Speed Record racing and the scenic landscape.

Attending the BUB-Motorcycle Speed Trials in 2004 and especially 2006, when the 16-year old Land Speed Record was broken first by Rocky Robinson, 2 days later again by Chris Carr, R?sler’s eye on the event is that of a photographer, technician and highly investigative enthusiast, making the book a primer and must-read source for every salt flat newcomer. Both images and straight-to-the-point information, based on countless interviews with the Main players and most experienced riders on the salt, offer a comprehensive and packed information for every newcomer to Land Speed Racing and in particular to the special challenges of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The first announcement affects the Phoenix, AZ, event scheduled on March 29th and 30th. Although those dates will remain the same, the event location has been changed to Speedworld Dragstrip in Wittman, AZ.

Located approximately 20 miles from Phoenix, the facility has undergone notable improvements since AHDRA’s last appearance there in 2000.

AHDRA President Craig Tharpe explained that the reason for the move from the previous location (Firebird International Raceway) was a result of scheduling conflicts and concerns expressed over the track’s length that is needed for the high-powered Top Fuel bikes. “Ultimately, the track was not available on our desired dates, and fortunately for everyone involved, Speedworld was available,” he noted.

“Our efforts were to keep the event in the Phoenix area and in conjunction with the opening weekend of Arizona Bike Week activities,” Tharpe continued. “Speedworld Dragstrip actually puts us closer to a lot of the Bike Week activities”.

The most significant changes to the AHDRA 2008 schedule come at the season’s end, as AHDRA has announced that it will not hold national events in Pomona, CA, or Las Vegas, NV, in 2008.

The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) has been hosting AHDRA’s Championship Finals for many years. Unfortunately, efforts to secure a suitable date for 2008 were unsuccessful.

According to Chris Blair, Vice President of Racing Operations at LVMS, the facility will be hosting a major special event at the Drag Strip in November of 2008. Details on that event are not yet available, but Blair said final details would be coming soon.

AHDRA President Tharpe said that it has always been a risk holding the event in mid-November with uncertain weather conditions, and moving the event any later would certainly not be an option. “It turned out that there were no availabilities in October due to AHDRA’s secured and established Rockingham date and with the NHRA event already scheduled at LVMS,” he pointed out. Tharpe went on to say that while it is a huge change and thus an adjustment for the organization, they would try to make the best of it. “We will sit it out in 2008 and see what happens in 2009,” he said.

The impact of the Las Vegas cancellation has additional implications-namely, by forcing the cancellation of the Pomona, CA event as a national points race.

With the AHDRA Championship finals consuming three full days of racing, it is not possible for the finals to be held in Pomona because of numerous noise restriction curfews and limitations imposed on the allowed number of race days at the facility.

“We were barely able to get in our standard two-day event before nightfall at the facility-which does not have permanent track lighting,” Tharpe stated. “With the large number of competitors turning out for the final race of the year, it would not be possible to secure enough track time to accommodate our event at Pomona Raceway.”

Tharpe and many key members involved with California Bike Week and the Love Ride worked together for a great length of time to implement AHDRA’s involvement in the 2007 Pomona event and Tharpe says that he is still talking with the group to explore other possibilities available to maintain the valuable relationship.

AHDRA’s Championship Finals will now be held October 10-12 at the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Nationals in Rockingham, NC.

Tharpe explained that the Rockingham event is already one of the largest on the AHDRA schedule, and hosting the National Championship Finals there could bring phenomenal growth to the already successful event.

“Thankfully, we had already extended the Rockingham event to three days for 2008, which made it possible to easily move the finals there,” he commented.

“Steve Earwood and the staff at Rockingham Dragway are a fantastic group and provide an excellent track for us. Last year, at least nine national records were set at the event. With the fan popularity already established, bringing the AHDRA National Championships there could make it an all-around record-setting event”.

The season-end turn of events will also affect AHDRA’s National Championship Banquet, normally held on the Monday following the Finals in Vegas. Tharpe said that a date and location for the 2008 banquet have yet to be determined, but will be forthcoming.

AHDRA’s Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Championship Series will now host eleven national points events in 2008 and one non-points event in Sturgis, SD.

AHDRA contestants may choose ten races to be used in calculating National Championship points.

NC HELMET LAW FIGHT–Last summer, I spent a lot of time, as an individual citizen, presenting arguments against helmet law and enforcement. I was the only biker in Raleigh to request motion for repeal on the grounds of vagueness, in house and senate judiciary committees.

Last September, we introduced bikercourt.com and the Ticket Information Tracking System (T.I.T.S.) at http://bikercourt.co/portal/We intend to fight helmet tickets in court. Each trial costs the state $872. If we get 2000 trials, it will cost NC $1.7M. Most helmet tickets get dismissed with no trial.

If the case goes to trial and the biker is wearing anything on their head that could be construed as a helmet, we have won cases under the old law, and stand a strong chance of winning many trials under the new statute also. You can register at bikercourt.com and help anyone log helmet tickets. There are a couple lawyers we speak with, but most of us who are providing assistance to anyone are not lawyers, so the best we can do, legally, is to inform people of many valid arguments against to support our preposition that the statute and the standard it references are vague, and the ways in which lawful enforcement is likely to have many problems.

We have been teaching people how to understand their rights during a roadside stop. It is amazing how many people don’t have a clue, answering questions they do not need to answer, and allow a search. A helmet is personal property, and roadside stops should not be reason to prompt FMVSS 218 compliance testing without consent to search, particularly since the only full testing includes destruction of the helmet.

On the Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, we began encouraging all motorcyclists to put electrical tape over their helmets DOT label, or paint over them, or label over them, as is their right as owner of the helmet. This is not a violation of federal law, and would totally screw up all plans for enforcement if all motorcyclists did this, because LE plans to ticket all people wearing helmets with no DOT label.

On New Years Day we organized and helped organize helmet protest rides in 4 counties. You might have seen the news reports and videos. We will build on this momentum with more protest actions.

Freedom Rides in the Counties – throughout Feb and MarPaul Revere Rides, need organizers in all counties….April 18th.Patriots Day Rally, Raleigh April 19thOpening Day of the Legislature, May 13thSOB Party, May 17th South of the Border, Dillon SC2nd Annual East Coast Helmet Law Protest and Freedom Ride, Dillon SC

We are also writing to federal and state officials, and preparing press releases to show all that the helmet statute is unconstitutional and is being unlawfully enforced.
