BIKERNET REVIEW FROM LONG TIME READER–Wanted to say that I am at a loss as to how you do it.Bikernet has really become the magazine of choice.Publications are becoming irrelevant in today’s world.I now subscribe to Easyriders, Back Street Choppers (Iron Horse) and Cycle Source.I have no idea why, except I like something in the mailbox, I flip thru em and that’s that.I own every issue of Easyriders, every issue since day #1.I don’t know why, just is.
The reason I am writing is your 2008 plea to buy American. You just came from Hawaii, did you see what I saw last October?Disenfranchised Hawaiians living on their islands, yet economically worlds away from their locale. I am fearful the same is looming for the USA.Custom Chrome sold to a Korean consortium? Last week Taylor Oil the largest and most respected Louisiana independent oil company was sold to the Chinese!!!!What the f–k is going on?
I have given up on the bike scene. I have my bike. It will kick ass on anyone’s stocker. I have toured the USA and been riding since 1969. I have nothing to prove to anyone.I am now looking out of country to retire and run a fishing business. A boat, bait and a beer are where I am headed.Sorry to run on but then again so does the Thursday News at times.I respect Bikernet for staying true to the Code of the West ( or is that Long Beach?)
You hang tight, we need ya.

OCC MOTORCYCLES UNVEILS TWO NEW PRODUCTION BIKES AT CINCY’S 2008 V-TWIN EXPO–FEBRUARY 2, 2008 (Cincinnati, OH) — On Friday, February 1, 2008, OCC Motorcycles unveiled two exciting new additions to their award winning Limited Edition Production Bike Line during a special industry-only reception at the 2008 V-Twin Expo. Showcasing the same quality and innovation of their predecessors, The OCC Sweet Amber and The OCC SR Cruiser wowed the crowd, playing on the hottest designs in the industry while incorporating the unexpected features that are hallmarks of OCC’s unmistakable style.
The OCC Sweet Amber pulls strong, sexy curves out of a traditional softail frame, proving performance need not come at the expense of style. Unusual details like an oil tank discreetly mounted in the bomb-proof transmission, 2″ thick Springers and original OCC flow-cut chrome wheels set The OCC Sweet Amber well apart from its competition. An EPA-certified engine unleashes incendiary speed while a large 21″ front and a thick 240 rear tire balance that power with sure-footed stability. Finally, a sleek, low slung design, internal wiring and premium OCC paint designs lend an alluring refinement to a body that’s built for speed.
The OCC SR Cruiser is a classic redefined. A completely re-imagined old style glide, it retains the essential elements of a true bagger: stability, storage and comfort. A dual-style gas tank and twin exhaust pipes that exit out the side of the saddlebags lend an aggressively updated style, while a progressive EPA-certified X-wedge engine and brawny, custom-framed rear 240 add power, steadiness and control. Deftly rendered extra wide bags increase the cargo area without being obtrusive, and a uniquely designed seat is the finishing touch to this stylishly comfortable bike, a new-school roadster ready to take you as far as you want to go.

I’m doing communityservice this week.’ The florist is pleased and leaves the shop. When the barber goes to open his shop the next morningthere is a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen roses waitingfor him at his door. Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he triesto pay his bill, the barber again replies, ‘I cannotaccept money from you. I’m doing community servicethis week.’ The cop is happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the barber goes to open up thereis a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen donuts waiting forhim at his door. Later that day, a college professor comes in for ahaircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barberagain replies, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’mdoing community service this week.’ The professor isvery happy and leaves the shop. The next morning when the barber opens his shop, thereis a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen different books, such as ‘How to Improve Your Business’ and ‘BecomingMore Successful. Then, a Congressman comes in for a haircut, and whenhe goes to pay his bill the barber again replies, ‘Icannot accept money from you. I’m doing communityservice this week.’ The Congressman is very happy andleaves the shop. The next morning when the barber goes to open up,there are a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for afree haircut. And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental differencebetween the citizens of our country and politicians. –from Nick Roberts FBI CAN TAP YOUR CELL PHONE–The FBI appears to have begun using a novel form of electronic surveillance in criminal investigations: remotely activating a mobile phone’s microphone and using it to eavesdrop on nearby conversations. The technique is called a “roving bug,” and it was used on two alleged mobsters, John Ardito and his attorney Peter Peluso. Their Nextel phones were activated by the FBI to listen in on nearby conversations. The FBI views Ardito as one of the most powerful men in the Genovese family, a major part of the national Mafia. The U.S. Commerce Department’s security office http://www.wasc.noaa.gov/wrso/security warns that “a cellular telephone can be turned into a microphone and transmitter for the purpose of listening to conversations in the vicinity of the phone.” Black Hats can remotely install a piece of software on to any handset, without the owner’s knowledge, which will activate the microphone even when its owner is not making a call. –from El Jeffe LIFESTYLES DEALS OF THE WEEK–THESE BIKES JUST IN!We just got in some AWESOME pre-owned bikes at killer prices! CLASSIC HELMETS FROM BILTWELL– OPEN FACE HELMET,__Pudding bowls, Nazi helmets and DOT-approved half helmets each have their place in the pantheon of skid lids, but for our money, nothing looks better or feels more comfortable than an old-fashioned open face helmet. Trouble is, finding an open face that doesn’t make you look like an astronaut is extremely difficult. NOS helmets are one solution to this problem, but their numbers are dwindling rapidly. When you can find one of these circa ’60s brain buckets, they are usually so moth-eaten and/or overpriced you can’t justify putting one on your head.__Enter the Biltwell novelty helmet. Our open face design is stylish, comfortable and classic. Our seamless injection-molded ABS plastic outer shell is form fitting and super flexible. Because our non-DOT-approved helmet has no expanded polystyrene (EPS) inner shell, it fits close to the skull-nobody wants to look like a bobble head doll when they’re riding their chopper. The open-cell foam padding inside our helmet features a moisture wicking fleece Lycra liner for cool, dry comfort. __We offer a wide range of metal flake and solid colors, and a rugged clear coat protects every paint job. There’s a goggle strap retainer on the back, and the helmet edge is protected with durable rubber ribbing. A simple D-ring retention strap holds the Biltwell helmet securely on your head. __ Now, a word about sizing. Miraculously, the Biltwell helmet is one size fits most. Pin-headed bikers who normally wear a 6-5/8 helmet can wear a Biltwell helmet, and their size 8+ pals can squeeze their giant melons into our helmet without discomfort. That’s because the foam padding inside our helmets is really soft and compliant, and because our outer shell is so flexible. Of course, this is the reason why the Biltwell helmet is designed for display and novelty purposes only, and should never be worn to operate an actual motorcycle. Simply put, Biltwell helmets do not meet any DOT or other safety standards.__MSRP’s:_Solid: $75_Metalflake: $114_ WWW.biltwellinc.com NEW DATE AND NEW LOCATIONFOR THE 22nd BIKER FEST INT.—THE BIKER FEST GOES BACK TOOSOPPO (UDINE – NORTH-EAST ITALY) FROM 5th TO 8th JUNE 2008 www.bikerfest.com The appointment with the most famous and spectacular Italian biker rally, the BIKER FEST INTERNATIONAL moves up of two weeks:the 22nd edition of the BIKER FEST takes place from 5th to 8th June 2008 in OSOPPO (Udine – North-East Italy). UP TO 100 MPH, 80MPG AND BUILT BY GRAY-HAIRED ENGINEERS– A DIESEL–Ex-Harley staffers go full-throttle with their idea of fun. They call themselves the Gray Eagles, a group of senior engineers who would rather build motorcycles than play golf. In a small, modest workshop in the Menomonee Valley, the Gray Eagles have built a powerful street bike that looks like a Harley-Davidson, kind of sounds like one, but has a diesel engine. The motorcycle was developed over the past several years as a demonstration of engine technology for the U.S. military. With a little luck, it could become the nation’s first turbocharged, diesel-powered bike aimed at riders wanting something different. The bike could easily top 100 mph and get about 80 miles per gallon of fuel at normal highway speeds. Harley-Davidson officials have looked at the bike three times, perhaps because several of the Gray Eagles are former Harley engineers and executives. Nick Hirsch, head of the project, was Harley’s director of advanced engineering for about nine years. Now he is president of Advanced Engines Development Corp., a small Milwaukee firm that has developed engines for the military. Karl Nilson, another Gray Eagle, was a Harley engineer involved in a secret project to produce a sophisticated motorcycle that would have been years ahead of its time. Called the “Nova project,” it sputtered to a halt in the early 1980s when Harley teetered on the edge of bankruptcy. Dave Caruso, another Gray Eagle, was a Harley executive and now serves as a consultant to the motorcycle company. Don Kueny was chief engineer at the former Outboard Marine Corp., the maker of Johnson and Evinrude outboard engines. All together, the Gray Eagles have decades of high-level engineering and business experience.Nilson has a more humble description of the group. “We are just a bunch of old guys with a common background. Gear heads is the term you might call us,” he said. The diesel-powered motorcycle is a prototype based on a Harley 1988-vintage FXRS chassis and a V-twin gasoline engine converted to run on diesel fuel. “This is our first cut at it. We can improve the performance to where it’s better than a stock gasoline engine,” Hirsch said. The project started as an experiment meant to show the military the potential of a V-twin diesel. It has morphed into something that might attract a motorcycle manufacturer wanting to offer an alternative in an industry that’s based on gasoline engines. “There’s going to be a niche for diesel bikes. I would be very surprised if the Japanese aren’t working on them now,” Nilson said. –By RICK BARRETT, journalsentinel –from Barry Cooney RENEGADE GRAND OPENING– We are having a grand opening party for our new studio “Renegade Studios” Home of Renegade Biker Magazine and Scharf Designs! POLICE SEEK VOLUNTARY DNA SAMPLES DURING ARRESTS– February 08, 2008DAYTONA BEACH — If you’re driving down the road drunk and stopped by a police officer here and get arrested, you may be asked to do more than blow into a breathalyzer machine.Police will also want your DNA.
The same thing could happen if you’re arrested for trespassing, littering, indecent exposure or any other crime that prompts a cop to slap a pair of handcuffs on you.
Because starting soon, if someone is arrested by Daytona Beach or several other police agencies, officers will ask suspects whether they would like to give a DNA sample.
The Public Defender’s Office says the lines between voluntarily giving DNA and believing it’s required by law when you’re under arrest are easily blurred.Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood, however, is determined.
“We’re going to be swabbing people we arrest,” Chitwood said, referring to the method police will use to obtain voluntary DNA samples from people. “It (the process) will follow all the legal requirements for it to stand up in court.”
Chitwood said he’s anxious to establish a strong DNA database. It would serve police in the case of a serial killer who has murdered four women and in all cases, the chief said.
In their quest for DNA and a suspect in the serial murders, Daytona Beach investigators could literally end up knocking on someone’s door if they receive a legitimate tip about a suspicious person, Chitwood said. Detectives could ask that person to voluntarily give a DNA sample.
If the person refuses and detectives believe there is probable cause, police could obtain a warrant, or employ other investigative tactics, Chitwood said.In the last several weeks, tipsters have called in with the names of dozens of people they believe could be the serial killer, the chief said.
“We have looked at a lot of people,” Chitwood said. “We’ve had some really good information.”
Two weeks ago, Deputy Police Chief Steve Beres sent several police agencies in the area an e-mail asking them to participate in the new initiative and ask for DNA samples from people they arrest in their respective cities.
“After discussion with profilers, there is a good possibility that law enforcement has, or will come in contact with the suspect in the homicides,” Beres wrote in his e-mail message. Most police officials said they would participate in the push but would first consult their legal departments before starting the effort.
“We’ll help Daytona in any way we can,” Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety Director Stephan Dembinsky said.Attached to Beres’ e-mail was a “permission to search” form developed by police and the State Attorney’s Office. Officers are supposed to present the form when requesting DNA.
But regardless of whether people who are arrested allow officers to swab the inside of their cheeks, the plan sounds outrageous to Public Defender James Purdy.
Purdy said the stress brought on by an arrest can cloud a person’s ability to distinguish between a requirement by law and a request by an officer.
“The Legislature states that DNA can only be collected for certain violent offenses,” an angry Purdy said Thursday. “If you’re arrested for drunk driving, do you want to have your DNA on file?”We’re going beyond the invasion of personal liberty,” he said. The perception by most people is that if they don’t voluntarily surrender their DNA to police — or anything else they may ask for — they could get treated differently by an officer, Purdy said.
“If someone refuses to give their DNA, that does not mean they’ve done something,” he said. “Your right to privacy is more important than the government’s need to know.
“I would not give it (DNA) myself,” he said.

His wife thinks he’s pushing himself too hard, so for his birthday she takes him to a local strip club. The doorman at the club greets them and says, “Hey, Bob! How ya doin?” His wife is puzzled and asks if he’s been to this club before. “Oh no,” says Bob. “He’s on my bowling team.” When they are seated, a waitress asks Bob if he’d like his usual and brings over a Budweiser. His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says, “How did she know that you drink Budweiser?” “I recognize her, she’s the waitress from the golf club. I always have a Bud at the end of the 1st nine, honey.” A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Bob starts to rub herself all over him and says, “Hi Bobby. Want your usual table dance, big boy?” Bob’s wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club. Bob follows and spots her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her. Bob tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it. She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every four-letter word in the book. The cabby turns around and says, “Geez Bob, you picked up a real bitch this time.” –from Bob Sofford SAVE THE DATE J&P CYCLE 29TH ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE–June 28, 2008 (8am-5pm)–SAVE THE DATE NOW!! The new site created and maintained by Sara Liberte and Jody Perewitz presents motorcycling and everything that goes along with it from a female perspective. www.garage-girls.com is a unique, exciting new website developed to meet the growing needs of women seeking information about motorcycles and their maintenance. “Women are buying more motorcycles now than ever before. Along with owning the bike, many also want to know how to perform general maintenance, connect with other female riders about issues important to them and their everyday life. The site was created to meet their needs” explained founder Sara Liberte. The concept driving Garage-girls.com is to encourage women to maintain a balance between their motorcycle and body. Garage-girls accomplishes this by providing quality content covering topics including demonstration videos focused on motorcycle maintenance ranging anywhere from changing fluids, battery care, tire care, tool information, new product testing and ways to individualize/customize motorcycles. You’ll also find information on keeping up with a healthy lifestyle, from exercise to recipes to overall health info, beauty products, fashion, and general interests such as movies, books and music. On the site you’ll also find Cruisin’ Companions. In this section visitors are encouraged upload a photo of their adorable pet to share with other garage-girl guests. This section of the site is dedicate to raising awareness for Animal Friends, a non-profit organization that relies on community support to help find homes for pets in need. “Motorcycling is second nature to me, being raised in the industry I sometimes forget it can be a bit overwhelming and confusing. Hey,
I’m at a loss today. I woke up a 4:30 a.m. with a pounding earache, and I thought for sure I had this cold under control. Half the biker world is headed to Indy and the other half are checking their bags and packing for Daytona.
The show must go on, while I pour 60 wt. Amsoil into my ear canal and hammer at the news. It’s going to be a good one. Then I’ll report our projects or crawl back in bed and drink Brandy and tea. What do you suggest?

For more information call Exile Cycles on (818) 255-3330 or visit: CALIFORNIA HELMET COURT CASE BUILDING– There was a Court Hearing today in Santa Cruz. It’s the lawsuit against the CHP (Civil Court) that was filed by motorcycle riders because the police are enforcing the helmet law improperly. The CHP’s attorney, the Attorney General of California (AG), filed a request (MSJ) that the court give the win to the CHP, because they claim there’s enough proof that the CHP will win after the trial, so “why have a trial?” The Judge denied the MSJ and disagreed with the AG. WE win again. In fact, the Judge disagreed with the CHP (AG) so strongly, that he hinted that the CHP might lose the case in the long run. So, we have some paperwork to file with the court ASAP. We are hoping the Judge actually signs an Injunction against enforcement. In other words, orders the police to quit enforcing the helmet law. What do you need to do? Right now, make an effort to contact everybody you know (and everybody they know) to get information to me about any helmet ticket you can find. The more unapproved helmet tickets you can show the Judge, the more likely he is to see that they have been writing tickets when they shouldn’t have. Take a picture of the helmet if you can, but most importantly get the info about that ticket emailed to me ASAP. A copy of the ticket would be the best. A “goldmine.” We’ve been telling you for months that this will, very likely, take the helmet law out completely. You have not been this close to getting rid of the helmet law since it was written into the lawbooks in 1992. Make this your personal goal; Find any and every helmet ticket written since 1996, the Easyriders Federal Court Decision. Every person you find that was ticketed for a helmet violation is another nail in the coffin of the helmet law. Now go find ’em; We know they’re out there. Get back to me. –PAN Continued On Page 2

THE GOOD HUSBAND CLASS FROM BIKERNET– Jack wakes up with a huge hangover after attending his company’s Party. Jack is not normally a drinker, but the drinks didn’t taste like alcohol at all. He didn’t even remember how he got home from the party. As bad as he was feeling, he wondered if he did something wrong.
Jack had to force himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table. And, next to them, a single red rose!! Jack sits up and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed.
He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house.
He takes the aspirins, cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror. Then he notices a note hanging on the corner of the mirror written in red with little hearts on it and a kiss mark from his wife in lipstick: “Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to get groceries to make you your favorite dinner tonight. I love you, darling! Love, Jillian”
He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is hot breakfast, steaming hot coffee and the morning newspaper.
His 16 year old son is also at the table, eating. Jack asks, “Son…what happened last night?”
“Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind. You fell over the coffee table and broke it, and then you puked in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door.
Confused, he asked his son, “So, why is everything in such perfect order and so clean? I have a rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me??”
His son replies, “Oh THAT… Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you screamed, “Leave me alone, I’m married!!”
Broken Coffee Table $239.99
Hot Breakfast $4.20
Two Aspirins $.38
Saying the right thing, at the right time. PRICELESS.

MEMO FROM BIKERNET FARM IN INDIANA–The Indiana State Wage & Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him.
“I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,” demanded the agent.
“Well,” replied the farmer, “there’s my farm hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board.
The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $150 per week plus free room and board.
Then there’s the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally.”
“That’s the guy I want to talk to — the half-wit,” said the agent.
“That would be me,” replied the farmer.

THE MYSTERY CARB PHOTO–Pics of my EX carbs. Dean didn’t rebuild this set (unfortunately). This is the set that came with the bike from Dave Hurst. I think Doug Reese did these carbs..yeah, wonder how the gaskets were?
Those guys who don’t know, this is a custom EX built by a friend. It’s been on speed channel several times, been to SEMA, biker build off type shows, built by Bryan Fuller.
And yes Dave Hurst, those are your old carbs!….Bryan spiffed them up a bit, huh?…you might remember him from Barber pit.

BUY AMERICAN!–This is something we banter around constantly, but we need to look at it seriously. A brother just got a call, “I can buy 5-speed polished Softail Transmissions for $499, with a pulley,” He said. “I couldn’t build a transmission case for that price in the US.”
He spends $399 for top of the line Pan or Shovel cylinders, a piece. “I could have them made overseas for $99. Does that make me a bad businessman, or a man who honors his country?”

JODY PEREWITZ JOINS TEAM KRYPTONITE–Lock Manufacturer Teams with Growing Force in Motorcycle Industry.
Canton, MA February 1, 2006 – Kryptonite, a brand in Ingersoll Rand’s Security Technologies Sector, announces that Jody Perewitz has joined Team Kryptonite. Kryptonite and Perewitz Cycle Fabrications entered into an exclusivity partnership two years ago when her father, legendary builder Dave Perewitz, joined Team Kryptonite. Jody will represent the company at shows and through its newly launched Riding Essentials for Women class.
“After working with the Perewitz family for several years, Kryptonite is making our relationship with Jody official by adding her to our growing Team Kryptonite,” said Karen Rizzo, Director of Marketing. “Our partnership with Jody will help us bring the message of security to an ever expanding audience that we may not have been successful at targeting before – the woman motorcycle rider. We all look forward to having a long relationship with Jody.”
Perewitz will team with endurance sport bike racer, Nicole Hoffman in the newly created Riding Essentials for Women summer series of classes. They will travel to select dealers sharing their experiences and extensive knowledge on safety, simple maintenance, gear choices, resources available and security tips. The whole experience will be for women only. The first class will take place at Perewitz Cycle Fabrications in June.
In addition to the women’s classes, Jody will also continue to write for Kryptonite’s Unbreakable Bonds blog and participate in other non-traditional marketing for the company later in the year.
“We’ve trusted Kryptonite products for years at the shop and on the road,” said Jody Perewitz. “I know full well how intimidating it can be to ask “the guys” anything so I’m glad to have the opportunity to work with this brand to help bring more women into the sport.”
Perewitz joins her famous father, endurance road racer Nicole Hoffman and former pro-cyclist Bob Roll on Team Kryptonite. The company has enjoyed lengthy relationships with each of these members.
Kryptonite, Jody Perewitz, Dave Perewitz and Nicole Hoffman can be found in booth 2019 at Dealer Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana. The show runs February 16-18, 2008.

BIKERNET OLD SCHOOL STORY REVIEW– Hey – the FatBob piece was great… good story and some good pics, and just a good read. Thanks.

MOTORCYCLE TRANSPORT HOT TIP–Mike is currently on his way to Maimi. From there he’s heading north to Departure Bike Works in Richmond, VA with the Bonne Belle, our Bonneville Flat Tracker. If you need a motorcycle moved at a very good price give Mike or Erin a call.
BIKERNET ZOO NOW OPEN–A biker is riding by the zoo, when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion’s cage.
Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.
The biker jumps off his bike, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.
Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.
A reporter has seen the whole scene, and addressing the biker, says- Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I saw a man do in my whole life.
– Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right.
– Well, I’ll make sure this won’t go unnoticed. I’m a journalist, you know, and tomorrow’s papers will have this on the first page. What motorcycle do you ride?
– A Harley Davidson.
The journalist leaves.
The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on first page:
BIKER GANG MEMBER ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH.

V-QUAD CUSTOMS WIN POMONA GRAND NATIONAL ROADSTER SHOW– Greg Nelson of Nelson Engineering showed his new V-Quad engine at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati last weekend. The V-Quad is essentially, the largest, most powerful engine that you can get and put into your stock Harley EVO style frame with minor frame modifications. This monster makes double of everything, double the sound, double the horsepower and double the torque.
The V-Quad was installed in a stock FL with minor modifications to the frame. According to Greg it’s a simple swap and doesn’t have any adverse affect on the handling of the bike. I threw my leg over the bike and lifted it off the side stand without any more effort than my own FLTRI. Presently it is available with 45mm Mikuni Carbs only, no fuel injection yet, which may limit some applications but I’m sure it won’t hold back those builders who want the biggest engine on the block.
Greg has some neat videos of the engine in an FXR at Bonneville on his website http://v-quad.com/index.php which showcase the awesome power and torque that this beast produces.

Glide to Live … Live to Glide
BIKERNET GEOGRAPHY SEMINAR–Have you ever looked at a map of the world?Look at Texas with me just for a second. That picture, with the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast, and the Red River and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as anything ever will be.. As soon as anyone anywhere in the world looks at it they know what it is. It’s Texas. Pick any kid off the street in Japan and draw him a picture of Texas in the dirt and he’ll know what it is. What happens if I show you a picture of any other state? You might get it maybe after a second or two, but who else would? And even if you do, does it ever stir any feelings in you?
In every man, woman and child on this planet, there is a person who wishes just once he could be a real live Texan and get up on a horse or ride off in a pickup.
There is some little bit of Texas in everyone.
Did you ever hear anyone in a bar go, “Wow…so you’re from Iowa? Cool, tell me about it?” Do you know why?Because there’s no place like Texas.
Here are just a few facts and history of the great state of Texas.
Texas is the Alamo.
Texas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom.
We send our kids to schools named William B.Travis and James Bowie and Crockett and do you know why? Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes. John Wayne paid to do the movie himself. That is the Spirit of Texas.
Texas is Sam Houston capturing Santa Ana at San Jacinto.
Texas is “Juneteenth” and Texas Independence Day.
Texas is huge forests of Piney Woods like the Davy Crockett National Forest.
Texas is breathtaking mountains in the Big Bend.
Texas is the unparalleled beauty of bluebonnet fields in the Texas Hill Country.
Texas is the beautiful, warm beaches of the Gulf Coast of South Texas.
Texas is the shiny skyscrapers in Houston and Dallas.
Texas is world record bass from places like Lake Fork.
Texas is Mexican food like nowhere else, not even Mexico.
Texas is the Fort Worth Stockyards, Bass Hall, the Ballpark in Arlington and the Astrodome.
Texas is larger-than-life legends like Michael DeBakey, Denton Cooley, Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Janis Joplin, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Landry, Darrell Royal, Joe Da vis, E ric Dickerson, Earl Campbell, Nolan Ryan, Sam Rayburn, George H.W.Bush, Lyndon B.Johnson, George W. Bush.
Texas is great companies like Dell Computer, Texas Instruments, Compaq, Lockheed Martin Aerospace, Home of the F-16 Jet Fighter and the JSF Fighter.
Texas is NASA.
Texas is huge herds of cattle and miles of crops.
Texas is skies blackened with doves, and fields full of deer.
Texas is a place where towns and cities shut down to watch the local High School Football game on Friday nights and for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and for the night in Old San Antonio River Parade in San Antonio.
Texas is ocean beaches, deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains and prairies, and modern cities.
If it isn’t in Texas, you probably don’t need it.
Texas even has its own power grid!
No one does anything bigger or better than it’s done in Texas.
Our state capitol building is the only one in the country that is taller than the capitol building in Washington, D.C. and we can divide our state into five states at any time if we wanted to! We included these things as part of the deal when we came on. That’s the best part, right there.
By federal law,Texas is the only state in the U.S. that can fly its flag at the same height as the U.S. flag. Think about that for a second. You fly the Stars and Stripes at 20 feet in Maryland, California, or Maine and your state flag, whatever it is, goes at 17 feet. You fly the Stars and Stripes in front of Pine Tree High in Longview or anyplace else at 20 feet, the Lone Star flies at the same height – 20 feet.
Do you know why?Because Texas is the only state that was a republic before it became a state.

Hey,
This is one of those nuts days. We kick off the news with a bang every Thursday morning. I hit the coffee and the computer simultaneously and don’t stop staring at the screen until I’ve downloaded all the news–unless I’m interrupted.
Today was packed with disruptions, like the dogs tearing shit up, the phone ringing, emergencies, doctor appointments, you name it. All the sniveling aside, this is going to be a helluva Thursday news, but I have a comment first:
We need to make, “Made in America,” a strident code and work on it. I like the people of China, Tawain and Korea. I don’t hold any grudges. I know we’re rapidly heading in a World economy direction, but we need to refocus on our homeland and support our quality product base. It’s easy, look for that Made in the U.S.A. line on any products and pay a little extra to support our working base. You don’t need to follow the code for every purchase, but keep it in mind always. I’ll mention a couple of supportive facts at the end of the news. Now let’s hit it:

AMSOIL FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSONS–In Test Results of Industry Standard Four-Ball Wear Testing, Harley-Davidson’s Own “Genuine” Oil Produces A High Wear Scar vs. Other Leading Motorcycle Oil’s!
Harley-Davidson Maintains That You Use Their “Genuine” Oil, yet Harley Davidson Doesn’t Even Make Their Own Oil.
Learn The Facts About Harley-Davidson Oil in this Eye-Opening Article written by A.J. Amatuzio, President and CEO of AMSOIL INC.
“A situation my daughter, Lyn, told me about recently got me to thinking about how good it is to be able to blend our own oils and have complete control over our own product quality.
Lyn loves to ride motorcycles. She recently purchased a Harley-Davidson bike and took it to the local Harley shop to have our new AMSOIL Motorcycle Oil installed. The mechanic took issue with her not using the oil Harley-Davidson sells, saying, “I’ll use AMSOIL motor oil when AMSOIL starts making motorcycles!”
How would you answer a challenge like that? I was pleased to hear Lyn’s response. She said, ” I’ll start using Harley-Davidson motor oil when Harley starts making oil!”
Perfect! The fact is that Harley-Davidson, like so many other “brands” of oil, contract with one or more oil companies to make their lubricants. Often, the decision as to who actually makes a private labeled product is based on low bid, and like almost everything manufactured by a low bidder, short cuts are taken in order to meet the low price.
Now there’s nothing wrong in having a goal to make money, but let’s get real here. Why would anyone want to use a product manufactured down to a price rather than up to high quality standards? We have tested a number of these private label motor oils and two-cycle oils and we found that many are mediocre quality products. None of them even comes close to performing as well as AMSOIL lubricants, and that’s a fact!
Our Motorcycle Products Brochure, G-391, includes wear comparisons of AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils vs. other oils, including H-D “Genuine”. Both our oils demonstrate superior wear protection over all other tested brands. Interestingly enough, the highest wear scar in this test turned out to be Harley-Davidson’s own “Genuine” oil!
There is a good reason why AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils protect so well against wear. They are formulated with significantly higher levels of zinc and phosphorus, which when included in proper formulation with other high quality additives, provide superior wear protection at the high operating temperatures typical of motorcycles. In addition, synthetic oils inherently reduce sump temperatures so the engines actually run cooler.
The fact is, Harley would do well to have AMSOIL make their oils for them. Then they could be assured that their oil was indeed a superior product. As it is, there may be absolutely nothing wrong with their oil for use in average service, but I guarantee you as the oil temperature gets hotter, like it does when sitting in traffic on asphalt on a hot summer day, the Harley-Davidson with AMSOIL in the crankcase is going to be far better protected and run far cooler than the bike with H-D “Genuine” oil in it. There’s just no two ways about it!
So, my daughter Lyn will be going back to this mechanic armed with the facts about AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils and a few facts about H-D oil. Nobody’s going to tell her that her dad’s oils are not the very best. She knows better, and she’s on a mission to prove her point. Who knows? Knowing Lyn, she might sign up another AMSOIL Dealer in the process.”
AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-40 and 20W-50 motorcycle oils give motorcyclists what they need: Superior wear protection for high- stress motorcycle engines and transmissions that stay clean and deposit-free.

NEW BIKERNET CORRESPONDENT IN KOREA– Here a few more pics from Asia.. Korea Japan.. Vietnam… I went for a ride on Sunday.. washed the bike up.. got the gear on.. took my camera and a bottle of poweraid ( Hang over cure like mother’s milk ). Got on the bike… headed to Jiri san ( Jiri Mountain ). Stopped for a smoke and a cut of hangover cure… Thought I’d take a pick, and wouldn’t you know it. I forgot my fucking camera on the roof of my car in a fucking apartment complex.
Got on the phone called the wife. She went out to look and see if it was still there, and it was. Holy shit, couldn’t believe it. Now I know why my mother always gave me those stupid fucking mittens with the yarn to connect them together, but anyway, was a great sunny day, about 10 degrees Celsius. I was alone on the bike– good times. I will pin the fucking camera to my forehead the next time I head out.
I’m retiring from the service in April, gonna stay in Korea. May go home for a trip in around May-June. I want to get on a salmon river back home… fuck I miss that, brilliant times… All you can hear is the water and the gears in yer head meshing, provided there is enough lash not to drive you over the bend.

BIKERNET FINANCIAL SEMINAR–Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.
The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest, and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $10 and as supply started to diminish, the villagers stopped their effort. He further announced that he would now buy at $20. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again.
Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it!
The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him.
In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers. “Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at $35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each.”
The villagers rounded up with all their savings and bought all the monkeys. Then they never saw the man nor his assistant, only monkeys everywhere!
Now you have a better understanding of how the stock market works.

MORE ON TWIN CAM GEAR CAM TECH– Nice shot of the gear drive on the home page! Just put some of those in myself a couple of years back…you probably know this, but one thing to check, if it’s not in the installation instructions….look at the photo, see where the large gear (cam gear) looks like it’s touching the casing by the bolt hole, left side, third from bottom? On the cam cover, make sure you grind a little meat away from that area so the gear doesn’t hit there when it spins. Not much has to come off. Maybe 1/8th inch, max…..
Ride on!

A ZEN MOMENT FROM SIN WU–A group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking at areunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now retired. During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress intheir work and lives. Offering his guests hot chocolate, the Professor wentinto the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot chocolate and anassortment of cups – porcelain, glass, crystal, some plain looking, someexpensive, some exquisite – telling them to help themselves to the hotchocolate.
When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said,”Notice that all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken, leaving behindthe plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the bestfor yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.
The cup that you’re drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the hot chocolate. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides whatwe drink.
What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup; butyou consciously went for the best cups…and then you began eyeing eachother’s cups.
Now consider this: LIFE is the hot chocolate; your job, money and positionin society are the CUPS. They are just tools to hold and contain life. Thecup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have.
Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hotchocolate God has provided us. God makes the hot chocolate, man chooses thecups. The happiest people don’t have the best of everything. They just makethe best of everything that they have
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. And enjoy yourHOT CHOCOLATE!”

On the other hand nothing slows down. Ah, but what was said is the truth. Find adventure everyday. Find some time to spend with friends and soft seductive women, and dig up some time to relax and tinker in the shop. But don’t go away from Bikernet. Fortunately, we archive every goddamn thing on the site, so you can roll over here any time, night or day, Sundays, Holidays, whenever, and find something new, or that old article or tech you need. Here’s what’s coming up. Paul is going to follow his bike accident on Bikernet and let us know how Geico treats him. Chris Callen just sent me a report on the evil Walmart empire. We have a short succinct tech on a brake component from Rogue, a Knockout Boardtrack feature, a couple more features, some new Girls of Bikernet are headed this way and we find ourselves dedicating a lot of space to Sportsters this year. Paul Garson is going to retro his new 2004 Sportster Custom. Jon Towle is performing a series of illustrative 2008 Sportster roadtests and there’s another Sportster series in the wings. What the fuck is it? It escapes me. And I’m going to build another Panhead desk. You’ll see it come together here on Bikernet. Plus, as of tomorrow, I’m starting to work on my next book. The first rough draft is in the Cantina, but I’m going to shake it up, and you’ll find a reworked Vince and Chance series, then Change strikes out on his own. Hang on, have a helluva weekend and don’t let these snivelin’ financial bastards get you down. Ride Forever, –Bandit

ATTENTION ALL EASYRIDERS BIKE COMPETITORS!!!!!–
Due to an over whelming number of requests, we have decided to add the Pro Class to the Columbus Regional show, this year. The show is being held February 15 thru 17, 2008. This year you can enter the PRO class in Columbus, and possibly walk out as one of the Centerfold Builders for the 2009 Easyriders Bike Show Tour. Here is how it all works.
If you enter the Pro Class, in Columbus, and are one of the three builders to be chosen to move into the Pro Invitational Class, you will advance, immediately, to the Pro Class finals, which will be judged on Sunday, February 17, 2008. It is in the Sunday competition that you will be competing against the other regional show finalists. It will be from this complete field of regional winners that we will choose the 2009 Centerfold Tour Builders.
We have also decided to make the same changes for the Best of Show competitors. In other words, the Judged Class bikes entered in the Regional part of the Columbus Bike Show will be judged on Saturday, February 16, 2008. The three bikes that the judges choose to be the Regional Best of Show winners will automatically advance to be in the Invitational Best of Show category. Along with the Judged bikes, the top three vote getting bikes, in the Spectator Class, as of 9:00 PM on Saturday, February 15, 2008, will also automatically advance to be in the Invitational Best of Show category. All of the Columbus Regional Best of Show winners will be judged, along with all of the other Regional Best of Show winners, from the 2008 Bike Show Tour, on Sunday, February 17, 2008.
All Best of Show winners from the Columbus Regional Judged and Spectator Classes, along with the Pro Class winners from the Columbus Regional Pro Class will be announced on Saturday night, February 16, 2008, at 9:30 PM, from the downstairs stage, in the North Hall. All of the winners of the Invitational Best of Show and Pro Class, along with all of the Columbus Regional winners, will be announced Sunday evening, as it has always been in the past, from the upstairs main stage.
What this will accomplish is that all of the Best of Show winners along with all of the Pro Class winners from the 2008 Bike Show Tour will compete against each other for the well deserved honors. This will make it so there is not a wait for the Columbus Best of Show winners, to be able to finish the competition in February 2009. Simply said, there is no more waiting a year to be finished with the competition.
Also, for Columbus, we have included one wristband ($35.00 value) to your entry, at no additional charge. Simply said, if you show your bike, at the regular price of $50.00 for a basic space or $70.00 for a corner space, you will receive one, complimentary, wristband with your entry. Any additional wristbands will need to be purchased at the regular wristband price of $35.00. Any other upgrades, such as electricity and turntables will also be at the regular additional prices.
If you have already signed up for the show and paid for your wristbands, you will receive a refund, at the show, in the amount of $35.00, for your complimentary wristband.
Please get your applications in as soon as possible. We are taking application in the office until February 13, 2008. After the 13th you can still enter. All you have to do is bring yourself and your bike to the Veterans Memorial Building, in Columbus Ohio. Space is limited, at this hall, so pre register if you can, or get there at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 14, 2008, to be guaranteed a Show Space, as show spaces are on a first come first served basis, for non pre-registered competitors.
We are looking forward to seeing you and your bike at the show!!!!!

BIKERNET FARMS QUARTERLY REPORT– John the farmer was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called ‘pullets’, and ten roosters, whose job it was to fertilize the eggs.
The farmer kept records and any rooster that didn’t perform went into the soup pot and was replaced. That took an awful lot of his time, so he bought a set of tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone so John could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report simply by listening to the bells.
The farmer’s favorite rooster was old Butch, a very fine specimen he was, too. But on this particular morning John noticed old Butch’s bell hadn’t rung at all! John went to investigate. The other roosters were chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing. The pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover.
But to Farmer John’s amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn’t ring. He’d sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges.
The result…The judges not only awarded old Butch the No Bell Piece Prize but they awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well.
Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making: who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren’t paying attention.
Vote carefully this year…the bells are not always audible!

STOLEN CREDITS FEATURED IN MAGAZINE– It has recently come to our attention that the January 2008 issue of Easyriders magazine features a motorcycle, “Root Beer Float” that is said to have been built by U.S. Kustoms of Danville, CA. Unfortunately this is not the truth.
The truth is that motorcycle was built by Joe Cree at California Customs for one of our clients. While it may be true that U.S. Kustoms did change some parts on this motorcycle, bars, front fender, etc. the motorcycle was designed, fabricated and assembled by California Customs.
Changing a few parts does not qualify them as the original creator of this motorcycle. We feel this act is nothing short of plagiarism and want to alert our friends in the motorcycling media about this issue.
While we know of several companies that have “borrowed” proprietary designs for parts and sold them as their own designs, this is the first time we have come across a shop taking someone else’s work and putting their name to it, the true definition of plagiarism. This sort of behavior should not be tolerated within our industry by anyone at any time.

VETERAN CHARITIES ON BIKERNET– Don’t forgot to cover the services provided at the VA hospitals and clinics around the nation during the tribute to our vets.
I work at a VA hospital, and I can say we do as much as we can for our vets when they come to our facility seeking service. You hear some horror stories of the VA out in the lands, but those are abnormalities and not the norm.
Also, can you put the vet tributes on the metric side of Bikernet too? Some of us who ride metric are vets too!

RUCKER PERFORMANCE RELEASES ITS 2008 PREDATOR–FORT WORTH, January 24, 2007 Rucker Performance is proud to introduce the 2008 Predator model. Building on the traditional look of V-Twin?s 2007 Custom of the Year, the Predator, features a re-designed, hand-built frame, new billet swingarm, re-designed oil tank, gas tank and rear fender for a more contoured look.
The Predator’s redesigned frame will now be built in house, which will change the profile of the bike appearance making it flow seamlessly from front fender to the newly designed rear fender. Lowering the placement of the oil fill on the redesigned oil tank also enhances the smooth appearance of the new profile, as does the new shape of the gas tank. The billet swingarm will be available in three finishes to complement the new design: polished, painted or chrome.
Although the profile of the bike is changing, the high standard of Rucker Performance is not. ?By building the frame in house, we will be able to offer better quality bikes to our customers. The redesigned profile of the Predator serves to enhance the performance and ride of the bike,? says Erin Rucker, Chief Operations Officer of Rucker Performance. The Predator will be debuting in the 2008 model line up of Rucker Performance motorcycles.
Built in the spirit of raw adrenaline drag racing, the Rucker Performance Predator boasts standard features such as 300-rear tire, polished S&S 124 cubic inch engine and right-side 6-speed transmission.

GREETING FROM THE STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM– One of the exhibits we’ve had on display for the last six to eight months is an exhibit about Motorcycle Clubs. As part of the exhibit, we had a number of vests with patches representing a variety of clubs. Unfortunately, the owner of those patches has reclaimed his collection. We’re in the process of trying to rebuild the display and are looking for clubs that might be interested.
The idea of this exhibit is to educate the public about the history of motorcycling and present a fair-minded representation of motorcycle clubs in their many forms. I’d like to rebuild the exhibit with themed sections to display, including women’s clubs, family oriented clubs, law enforcement clubs and veterans clubs.
Here’s what I’m looking for:
First choice would be a jacket or vest with the club colors on it that we could have on loan at the museum for a time period of one to two years. Second choice, just the patch itself (no vest or jacket). If we can’t get an actual vest or patch, I’d be interested in a 8.5 X 11 high resolution photo of same that we could display.
Along with the colors of the club, I’d also like to include a brief description of the club, including one paragraph describing the club – year founded, common bond, etc. All colors on display would be in locked cases and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame has security cameras in operation 24 hours a day.
If your club is interested in being represented in this exhibit, please contact me by email at Thanks. BIKERNET FREE DOOR PRIZES GIVEN AWAY CONSTANTLY– Just wanted to drop you a line and say “Thanks” for the great stuff. Got home from work on Thursday, saw a box by the front door, found out I had “won”. Nice surprise on a cold and shitty day here in Oklahoma. Love your site, you tell it like it is, keep looking out for the average rider and provide great articles. Been a fan a long time. Again, thanks for the stuff and a great motorcycle website, –Danny Jones NEW NEW 360 Brake AT V-TWIN EXPO–Stop by our Booth #4225 on the 3rd floor at the V-Twin Expo to check out the NEW 360 Brake We’ll be ready to answer all of your questions! The objectives for redesigning the new 360 Brake were widening the safety margin, increased braking capacity, and simplifying installation process. With these objectives met, Dale Needleman and his team are anxious to release their new design to the industry. “We’ll have our 360 Brake mounted on some awesome bikes from Russell Marlowe’s Custom Cycles and Tom Kapp’s Purple Haze from Art In Motion as well as the individual brake and components for your evaluation,” states Needleman, “so put us on your list of Must See while you’re in Cincy!” –360 Brake EMT & MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT CONCERNS–Vicki is concerned about the lack of training EMT’s get specific to motorcycle crashes. She is also concerned that the right’s community has been harping on crash avoidance instead of injury reduction that they are overlooking the many aspects of injury reduction. Certainly, we do not agree with NHTSA that wearing a helmet is primary to injury reduction. But there are many facets to this and why shouldn’t bikers demand both crash avoidance and injury reduction. Proper training of bystanders and EMT professionals could have a very beneficial impact on survival rates and outcomes. Vicki is doing great work in that area. Hey, have you been talking anymore with House of Harley about an appearance during the 105th Anniversary? There were interested in you, Valerie Thompson and the Assalt Weapan. I think Mike Hupy might contribute to some of the expenses to help sponsor you here. I’ll talk to him if you’re still interested. It’s going to be a good event, and the entertainment is 100% better than the 100th Anniversary. –Pan NEW HORRIFYING LAW DUE TO PASS IN AUSTRALIA–By 2009, your motorcycle is likely to have a front numberplate, even though most of the rest of the world manages without them. That’s the result of a draft regulatory impact statement authored by Vic Roads, the traffic authority for the Australian state of Victoria. The organization has been working on the issue at the behest of a national council of transport ministers. Testing of prototype plates has been completed and a final design for the laser-cut plastic identifiers, which are the same size as current rear plates, has been arrived at. Three main types of mounting have been identified: adhesive fixing to a fairing or windscreen, bracket mounting above or below the headlight, and unspecified custom mounts. Estimated respective costs are $25, $70 and up to $150. It is expected that state road registration authorities will bear the cost of the plates for the 540,000 registered bikes nationally which will need to be retro-fitted, but not for the mounting. New bikes will be charged for the cost. Vic Roads estimates the initial fit-out of the national fleet will cost $22.1 million in 2009, $13.5 million of which will be covered by road authorities and the remainder of which will be borne by owners. An additional $10 million is expected to be spent on a national propaganda campaign to support the move. The report claims there will be a 2-4 per cent reduction in motorcycle road trauma as a result of the change, mostly due to a reduction in speeding because of the increased chance of being nabbed by a speed camera. It also claims that approximately 49 per cent of motorcycles detected speeding are currently not identified because of the lack of front numberplate. Few countries in the world (India and Singapore are among them) currently use front plates. Web: –By Guy Allen HELMET HAIR MAGAZINE. Like stopping to buy a bathroom rug. If I hadn’t and just kept on going to the gym I wouldn’t have ended kissing the pavement fairly hard when a brand new Lotus zoomed a left turn in the intersection in front of me. As I was doing my Evel Knievel act the Lotus kept on going, then stopped a block a way for a couple seconds then took off. My BMW went down on the left side, the big jugs acting as safety bars and I got my leg out and hit on my right side at my lower back and hip. Needless to say traffic on Wilshire just kept on going around me. Amazing. Fortunately a group of people in a SUV behind me saw the thing go down and came to the rescue. They called the cops after going after the Lotus that had circled around the block and parked, watching me in the road. The SUV people, a mom and four teen-agers went up to the car and id’ed them as two Persians in a car with no license plate but there was a dealers plate, Beverly Hills Sports Cars. The Lotus took off when they witnesses it. Hard to hide a brand new yellow Lotus. Being Persians they also hang out in the Westwood UCLA area and probably won’t be hard to fine. And I’ll be checking at the car dealership. The cops said they’d be looking as well and told me to contact them I find anything out. Of course I’m waiting for the pain to make itself known when I wake up. I did feel click clacking in my vertebrae and lost some skin on my forearm but limbs and head intact. The witnesses thought I had done myself in, apparently I make significant impact, but I did my relaxation thing and didn’t stiffen up so was able to limp away. My bike got plenty of scrapes and dents but I was able to ride it home. I have insurance although, Geico has to check since I didn’t impact the car so they call it a “Ghost Car” instead of technically a hit and run altho the cops call it a hit and run. They did a report, etc and the Paramedics gave me a choice of going to the hospital or not. I didn’t want to leave my bike so I rode it home and took some Alleve. It doesn’t hurt too much if I don’t move. Just now, and it’s past one, the woman from Russ Brown’s office called me as I had left a message earlier, in case I need an attorney. I can’t believe she called me. Incredible. She’s going to call back in the morning when Russ is in and I figure out about the doctor thing. If I go to my doctor he’ll just send me all over the place to get x-rays and stuff, so I might just go the UCLA emergency room and do the whole thing there. But in any case, I was way lucky, although dealing with this is nothing I need at the moment. Fortunately my fingers still work. Talk to you later. Good people. –Mr. Pete TEXAS-SIZE COLLECTION OF CLASSIC AUTOMOBILES AND MEMORABILIA TO MAKE AUCTION DEBUT–(CHATHAM, Ontario – January 29, 2008) – The focus of the collector car world will shift to Fort Worth, Texas in April as RM Auctions proudly presents the private collection of Mr. Wayne Davis. Tentatively scheduled for April 19, 2008, this exciting no-reserve sale will offer some 90 classic automobiles, as well as 50 lots of automotive-themed memorabilia, in Davis’ hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. A lifelong auto enthusiast, Davis first joined the car industry after high school. At the age of 23, he began his own restoration shop, “Thunderbirds Etc”, first concentrating on 1955-1957 Thunderbirds before turning his hand to also focus on prewar classics, popular American marques from the 1940s and 1950s, and custom and street rods. Armed with an unwavering passion for the industry, an intimate knowledge of mechanics and high attention to detail – as reflected in his the motto, “My cars run as good as they look”- Davis carved a reputation for setting world-record prices at national collector car auctions. Since 1995, he has balanced his restoration hobby with working as President of Regency Conversions in Fort Worth, Texas – the company he eventually bought in 2004 and recently sold. This April, as Davis prepares to embark on retirement, he is offering the collector world a rare opportunity to purchase the cars that have brought him so much joy over the years. Assembled over the past two decades, Davis’ impressive collection reflects his ardor for the great American cars of the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, as well as featuring various custom and street rods. The collection also includes a number of early Cadillacs from the ’40s and ’50s. “All have been carefully maintained, with many having undergone expensive restorations,” says Davis in describing their condition. Highlights of the auction line-up include a highly coveted “Triple Crown”, comprising of a low-production 1953 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, often described as the most beautiful and special American car builtin the fifties; a rare 1953 Buick Skylark Convertible; and a 1953 Oldsmobile Fiesta Convertible, regarded as a “dream car” at the time of introduction. The collection also includes an extremely rare 1963 Ghia, one of only 26 examples produced; a handsome 1957 Dual Ghia, at it’s prime regarded as a “Hollywood icon” due to is popularity with celebrities (including the likes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin); and a custom one-off 1947 Cadillac Limousine “Woodie”. For those with a penchant for country music, the auction line-up also features a 1957 Chevrolet Convertible, formerly owned by American country star, Alan Jackson; he reportedly bought the car when he hit the “big time”. The memorabilia collection is just as diverse with many fascinating finds. Amongst a host of special automotive themed collectibles is an original 30 foot neon Cadillac script sign from the late 1940s. The Wayne Davis Collection event marks the first time that virtually all of Davis’ cars have been offered at public auction, presenting various unique ownership opportunities for discerning collectors and making this one sale you will not want to miss. For further information on the sale of this magnificent private collection, visit BRUCE ON CELL PHONE USE LAWS– …the Governors Highway Safety Association notes that despite the dozens of laws in place and hundreds of bills proposed, “No state completely bans all types of cell phone use (handheld and hands-free) while driving.” In other words, most cell bans apply only to hand-held devices, and contain loopholes that allow the conversations–and therefore the distraction–to continue using hands-free technology. As I have stated before, it is the conversation, and not the device, that creates the distraction. Here is what the Center for Auto Safety’s Executive Director Clarence Ditlow said in his January 2007 letter to NHTSA’s Nicole Nason: “Research has consistently shown that operating a motor vehicle while talking on a cell phone–whether hand-held or hands-free–increases the risk of an accident to three to four times the experience of attentive drivers. The general consensus of the scientific community is that there is little, if any, difference in crash rates involving hands-free versus hand-held cell phones. The two-way conversation on a cellular phone, not the task of holding the phone, causes a cognitive distraction. This distraction induces ‘inattention blindness,’ inhibiting drivers’ abilities to detect change in road conditions.” Despite the incontrovertible evidence that remote conversations on hands-free devices are just as distracting–and therefore just as dangerous–as those conveyed via hand-held units, legions of unenlightened legislators from coast to coast are seeking to garner media attention and public favor by proposing laws that restrict only the use of hand-held devices while driving. In the Florida statehouse, for example, we currently have no less than eight different bills proposed that would restrict the use of cell phones while driving (H0175/S0266, H0193/S0504, H0357/S1266, S0680 and S1314). Only two of them apply to hands-free as well as hand-held devices (S0680 and S1314), and they are the only two with no companion. And what will the likely consequence of all these “feel-good” measures be? To be sure, many lives that might have been saved by focusing on the distraction rather than the device will still be lost. And beyond that, well let’s see… After Chicago implemented a partial cell phone driving ban, the telecom industry reported that “Sales of hands-free headsets are being spurred by a new law [that] will result in $50 fines for driving with a cell phone pressed to your ear.” The same thing happened in California, where banning only hand-held cell phones while driving generated a “…boost in the sales of hands-free accessories, such as Blue Tooth ear pieces and speaker-phone car kits.” And in Pennsylvania recently, the mere rumor of an impending ban on hand-held devices “…caused some wireless sales to soar.” So regardless of legislative intent, about the only actual consequence we can count on from half-way measures and partial cell phone bans is a boom in the sale of mobile telecommunications products employing hands-free technology like BlueTooth. And where are those products made? Well according to this Global Sources Bluetooth Headset Manufacturers & Suppliers directory……of the 443 suppliers listed, 434 (98%) are based in China (Mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan), 4 in Korea, 1 each in Singapore and the Philippines, and only 3 in the U.S. Bad news, but there is one potential upside here: If nothing else, all those partial cell phone bans are bound to funnel millions of dollars–and with them thousands of jobs–overseas. That will leave many Americans with less money to spend on cars and gas … which should reduce the number of vehicles on the road, the number of miles we travel, and thereby the number of traffic accidents. So, we just might end up saving a life or two after all! –Bruce Arnold It’s interesting, the laws about cell phone use. Jeremiah recently drove his new Toyota Tundra pickup over to the Bikernet Headquarters, to show it off. He was most excited about the lavish Kenwood GPS/entertainment system. On our way to scarf Burritos in San Pedro he toyed with the system incessantly, changing channels, watching DVDs, playing music, looking up restaurants and whore houses in the directory and following our GPS path. Good god. How would he have time to drive, if his cell phone rang? It rings all the time.–Bandit TYPO DISCOVERED IN EVENT POSTER– Here is the poster the typo is in the guest speakers name. It should be Jerry Hatfield, but it is Jerry Hatifield a collectors item if I do say so myself. –Shotgun BIKERNET GOES TO THE DOGS OF ZEN– I’ve been meaning to write and just say thanks for posting my dog story. I appreciate it. Your shift of the identity of the “Dog” in the teasers/titles was pretty cute, and I laughed about that. That “was” good… You’re alright. Most of the feedback I’ve gotten has been that I should have shot the dog, or that I’m getting soft in my old age. A few folks, who happen to know me well, smiled and said that they can’t “believe” the dog is alive. I actually did a good thing. I was also counseled on my excessive use of profanity, and informed that “I AM” officially, the Devil. Generally, it appears that folks like the story. It makes you think, and that’s good. Somewhere in this feedback I got told that I need to find some “peace.” That actually got me lost for a little while inside my head. It’s just something that I do from time to time, as I sort through the myriad piles of “stuff” I have stored up in there… Since I’m currently inside my head, I’ll share… Though we describe it as “finding” peace, it’s not quite like that. You can’t really “find” peace… It’s not a thing, or a place… Peace kind of “happens”. It’s a state of consciousness… In my experience you create it… It only comes from within…It’s everywhere and in everything… You bring it to places and give it to things… It only becomes tangible when “you” STOP trying to physically fight the world… or control the world… or, maybe force your “Will” upon something. It’s an inner calmness, an acceptance… I know well my weaknesses, but trust deeply in my own strengths and abilities… It’s an ability to focus and direct your thoughts in harmony with your surroundings. You still retain all the power to channel and direct yourself, but you do so in a way that uses your surroundings to enhance your own abilities. I’ve found peace in the middle of a creek in the wilderness. And when a butterfly chanced to light upon my extended fingertip…I’ve found it in the middle of a raging firefight…I’ve found it in a crib as little blankets rose and fell with tiny breathes at 3AM.I’ve found it in the middle of unspeakable carnage…And I find it daily as I ride my Harley. Challenges come in all shapes and sizes… and packages… For example: Our vision of a beautiful day is shattered as we see a spiked wrecking ball adorned with the rotting flesh of hapless former victims swinging viciously towards us, intent on our destruction!!! A simple sidestep avoids collision, and … It whizzes silently and harmlessly by me…Perhaps I smile as it creates a breeze to cool me in the summer’s heat…How did you react? Did you sidestep as well? Did you waste your time cringing and being horrified or outraged at the visual, emotional image I created– and DIE? I was once labeled a “survivor”. I guess I’ll buy into that, as I sure ain’t dead yet! As a survivor, I think that understanding and acceptance of the nature of physics, action/reaction, or the world around us allows us to expend relatively minimal effort and effectively stop influences attempting to force us one way or the other… Seemingly insignificant effort is rewarded greatly… If you look, see, absorb, and understand your surroundings… I most certainly can’t physically “stop” the motion of the wrecking ball, but I surely can use it to my advantage, if I just “think”… Thanks again for posting the story, and I wish you “peace” in your endeavors, Sir. –Kev

PROGRESSIVE DATA SHOWS EVEN VETERAN BIKERS COULD USE BASIC TRAINING WHEN THEY SWITCH BIKES– MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio ? January 28, 2008 ? Whoever coined the phrase, ?it?s just like riding a bike,? probably never switched motorcycles. That?s because even experienced riders can be pretty wobbly when they hop on an unfamiliar bike, according to data from the country?s largest motorcycle insurer, Progressive.
The study of almost 2 million motorcycle policies over a five-year period finds that riders who switch bikes are nearly 70 percent more likely to crash than riders who keep the same bike.
?Most people already know that riding can be especially dangerous for new bikers,? said Rick Stern, a Progressive motorcycle product manager who is also a rider. ?But our data shows that the less familiar you are with your bike, the more likely you are to be involved in a collision, regardless of your experience.?
The study also found cruiser riders who switch to sport bikes are three-and-a-half times more likely to crash. That?s more than double the risk they?d have than if they just switched to another cruiser.
Sport bikers, on the other hand, can reduce their risk by more than a third just by switching to a cruiser.
?We want experienced riders to know their risks so they can take extra precautions when they replace their bikes,? said Stern. ?It?s a good idea for riders to take their new bike out for a couple of shake down cruises in a parking lot before hitting the open road.?
Even people who have been riding for years can benefit from practicing the basics on their new bike, Stern said, including low-speed riding, turning, shifting and swerving, and higher-speed panic stopping.
After all, if the goal is to keep the dirty side down and the shiny side up, there?s no substitute for experience?and not just experience on the road, but also on the bike.

NEW S&S 50th ANNIVERSARY WEBSITE GOES LIVE– The new website is packed full of information about the historic event. Designed with an interactive approach, the site allows users to navigate easily from screen to screen and get a solid start on planning their weekend in La Crosse. Local businesses and community information is instantly available with just a few clicks of your mouse.
“We worked with the entire community to set the standard for a motorcycle rally in the United States,” said S&S president, Brett Smith. “We felt having a full feature website dedicated to supporting a rally such as our 50th Anniversary Celebration was a necessary part of that.” Smith went on to say, “When you have everyone involved and supporting an effort like this, the website is a seamless integration of everyone’s effort and the services they will provide the visiting enthusiasts, making their experience here one to remember.”
Visitors to the new site will be able to check out who is in the build, look at maps of the area, visit a live web cam of La Crosse, find campgrounds and hotels, book their seats on celebrity river cruises with the builders and shop for S&S 50th Anniversary apparel.
“Building this new site was both challenging and exciting, as it gave me an opportunity to use Web 2.0 technology and AJAX programming components,” said S&S Webmaster Kevin Sather. “Additionally, this new site is the groundwork for the new version of the S&S main website that will be introduced later this year.”
The S&S 50th Anniversary Celebration will take place June 27-29, 2008 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The event will feature 50 of the world’s best builders creating 50 bikes, a celebration of S&S history and a community wide party to celebrate the event. .

Our Board of Directors has voted in the majority to support this case fully. Furthermore, ABATE of California established the ABATE Judicial Fund in order to accept donations to assist in the legal costs of such litigation. IVIE RACING, LLC INTRODUCES AN INDUSTRY FIRST AUTOMATIC LOCKING MOTORCYCLE TRANSPORT DEVICE–Memphis, TN – January 24, 2008 – Ivie Racing, LLC, a Memphis, TN based developer and manufacturer of aftermarket parts for the motorcycle industry, introduces the industry’s first automatic locking, strapless motorcycle transport device. The Freestand is a patent pending device for safely and securely transporting a motorcycle without the use of straps to hold the bike in place on a trailer, truck bed, or transporter.
“The Freestand is unique in that it does not require the rider to do anything other than push the bike into the stand to secure it for transport or storage,” said Mark Ivie, inventor of The Freestand. “While there are other strapless transport devices on the market, this is the first that does not require the bike to be manually locked to the stand.”
No Pressure on the Suspension
Because the stand attaches to the motorcycle’s front forks, there is no pressure put on the suspension system that can cause the fork seals to leak. “Since there is no threat of destroying your fork seals, you can leave the bike in the stand indefinitely without the worry of too much pressure being put on the front suspension system,”said Ivie. “That is a benefit to many of us who use trailers to store our bikes.”
Other Uses for the Stand
For the off road bike owners, the stand can also be removed from the hauler and used as bike stand. Using the stand also saves space allowing for more bikes in the same amount of space or more room for gear and other items.
TWIN CAM S&S GEAR DRIVE TECH REVIEW– That was a really good article about the gear drive work. Pictures and descriptions were great! I s’pose the guy has been told this, but he looks like that B-list actor, Andy Dick…
Enjoy those gears. I can hear mine, but it’s actually kind of a cool noise….

We also need to mention the pushrod adjuster locking system. This particular set of pushrods have a stationary threaded shafts pressed into the aluminum pushrod. The tip is adjustable and the lock nut must jam against it and not the pushrod above.–Wrench
