BIKERS IN AUSTRALIA BUST ROBBERY EFFORT–(CNN) — Two masked and machete-wielding men who barged into a club in Sydney, Australia, couldn’t have picked a worse night for their robbery — a monthly meeting of bikers.

About 50 burly bikers fought back with tables and chairs — pretty much anything that wasn’t bolted down. One would-be robber was tied up; the other in the hospital.

Police arrested both.

“These guys were absolutely dumb as bricks,” Jerry Vancornewal, leader of the bikers, told CNN Thursday. “I can’t believe they saw all the bikes parked up front and they were so stupid that they walked past in.”

Vancornewal and his buddies were at the Regents Park Sporting and Community Club in Sydney when the two men wearing ski masks stormed in Wednesday night. They yelled at patrons to drop to the floor as they emptied cash registers at the bar.

Hearing the commotion from an adjacent room, Vancornewal and his pals with the Southern Cross Cruiser motorcycle club stomped through to the bar area to intervene.

“They (the robbers) thought they had the upper advantage with their knives and their machetes,” Jim Webb, night supervisor of the club, told CNN. “They didn’t expect to run into a bunch of guys carrying chairs and tables.”

One of the would-be robbers crashed through a plate-glass door and jumped off a balcony.

“All he had to do was push the button and it automatically opened,” Webb quipped.

New South Wales police said they arrested the 20-year-old man a short distance away.

The second man made a break for it through the club’s service entrance, but the bikers tackled him near a neighbor’s fence.

“We just grabbed him, crash-tackled him to the ground, hogtied him with electrical wire and left him for the cops,” Vancornewal said.

Police confirmed in a statement that club patrons subdued the second man until officers arrived, but did not provide additional details. The suspect turned out to be a 16-year-old boy.

Both would-be robbers were charged with attempted armed robbery and “face disguised with intent to commit indictable offense,” police said.

A third person, who was waiting in a getaway car, took off when the bikers threw pieces of furniture at him, Webb said. Police have not located him.

HONDA TAKES THEIR MARBLES AWAY–Akio Hamada, CEO of Honda of America, announced this morning that Honda America Manufacturing will cease production of motorcycles at its Marysville, OH plant in 2009. All motorcycle production will be moved to a new facility in Kumamoto, Japan. “This move allows us to improve the competitiveness and appeal of our products,” said Hamada.

The Marysville facility was Honda’s first U.S. production facility and has produced more than 2 million motorcycles and ATV’s since 1979. It is the only facility in the world to produce the Gold Wing and VTX models. The facility employs 600 workers who, according to Hamada, will be reassigned to other area Honda facilities.

BIKERNET MADE IN USA CODE–Keep up the good work with the made in the USA stuff, I recently finished a project built around a Santee D&D 180 frame it took me a while because I tried to use as much USA made stuff as possible. But I had to make a couple of hard choices and bought three parts made in taifukinwan. All three have given me problems !!!

They will be UPGRADED to USA parts when I reassemble after powder-coating. Imagine what our economy would be like if we all bought AMERICAN.

THE MRF RIDERS’ REPORT–The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is taking action in light of whatappears to be an alarming trend with high-level government agency andcabinet-level appointees of President George W. Bush.

President Bush campaigned for the presidency on a platform of”compassionate conservatism.” During his campaign he often spoke of hisdesire to reign in big government and his commitment to personal freedoms. His message resonated with many in the motorcycling community and with theleadership of the MRF at that time.

While the president continues to speak of his conservative approach topublic policy and respect for the rights of the states during thiselection cycle, the practices of a growing number of his appointees seemto be in marked contrast with his rhetoric. Both Mark Rosenker, Chairmanof the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Mary Peters,Secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOT) have embarked on acourse that at first glance would seem out of place in a conservativeRepublican administration.

Mr. Rosenker appears to be enamored with 1960s era “Great Society” styleprograms. He is using his agency and his position to pressure every statein the Union to adopt mandatory helmet laws for all motorcycle riders.

Ms. Peters must have a battalion of Philadelphia lawyers on her staffwatching over her as she walks on the edge of federal regulations. The DOTsecretary is on a budget-busting spending spree that would make a “NewDealer” blush. She is not content to just spend the DOT’s budget on socialengineering, she is crafting ways to legally skirt the letter and theintent of SAFETY-LU (the highway funding act passed by the 109th congress)to scoop up what ever monies she can to advance her personal mission, evenif such funds are a meager amount dedicated to aiding motorcycle ridereducation.

The MRF finds this to be rather peculiar behavior in an administrationthat bills itself as “compassionately conservative.” Perhaps even morepeculiar is the fact that the president appears to be comfortable with hisappointees’ actions. The MRF is certainly not comfortable as we watchthese presidential appointees lining up against us.

Our level of discomfort increases as we recall other issues withappointees of the president. An unpleasant tussle with the EnvironmentalProtection Agency set the tone early on in this administration, followedby Dr. Runge at the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administrationreferring to motorcyclists as the scourge of the highways.

While the MRF will aggressively fight any negative legislation that may beintroduced at the behest of these presidential appointees, we will notwaste time wrestling with the current lame duck administration that hashistorically low approval ratings with the American public; we are lookingto the future.

The MRF is calling on the leadership of the Republican Party to explain tous and to six million motorcycle-riding Americans if this is the type ofpublic policy that we can expect in the future should a Republican beelected president in November. We will be writing a formal letter to MikeDuncan, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, expressing ourdispleasure over the course that the current administration has taken andasking for assurances that this is not the direction that his party isgoing to follow.

BRITAIN IS REPOSSESSING THE U.S.A. A MESSAGE FROM JOHN CLEESE–To the citizens of the United States of America:

In light of your failure to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas , which she does not fancy).

Your new prime minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a governor for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded.

A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

You should look up “revocation” in the Oxford English Dictionary.

1. Then look up aluminum, and check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

2. The letter ‘U’ will be reinstated in words such as ‘favour’ and ‘neighbour.’ Likewise, you will learn to spell ‘doughnut’ without skipping half the letters, and the suffix -ize will be replaced by the suffix -ise.

God save the Queen.

Only He can.

NEW T-SHIRT DESIGN COMING FROM LARRY GROSSMAN, HE NEEDS YOUR HELP–How’s it goin’? I wanted to get your opinion on something. I’m doing some new T-shirt designs and one is created from a portion of one of my posters, “Hot Pursuit”. The poster hasn’t been one of my best sellers, and I’ve heard a comment once or twice that bikers don’t want to see a chick on a chopper, no matter how hot she is!

I’ve been getting some comments from friends that the “Poon-Tang’s” could limit sales (what’s the world comin’ to!).

What’s your thoughts and howya like this instead (old one’s underneath). Got any better title ideas?? How about:

Jeez Loiuse Choppers
Holy Hell Choppers
Oh Lordy Choppers
Save my Soul Choppers
Hot Snapper Choppers

What’s your thoughts on all this …I guess the bottom line is, would you wear this on a black T-shirt? Any and all thoughts are appreciated! Drop me a line with any comments.

After a few minutes, the preacher removes his hands, stands back and asks Leroy: “Leroy, how is your hearing now?”

The teacher responded by saying, ‘That would be rude andimpolite. What about you Sherman, how would you say it?’

Sherman said, ‘I am sorry, but I really need to go to thebathroom. I’ll be right back.’

‘That’s better, but it’s still not very nice to say the wordbathroom at the dinner table.’ And you, little Johnny, can you use your brain for once and showus your good manners?’

‘I would say: Darling, may I please be excused for a moment? Ihave to shake hands with a very dear friend of mine, whom I hope to introduce you to after dinner.’

KRYPTONITE CREATES “RIDING ESSENTIALS FOR WOMEN” CLASS– Jody Perewitz & Nicole Hoffman to Share Knowledge and Expertise with Women.

Canton, MA February 16, 2008 – Kryptonite, a brand in Ingersoll Rand’s Security Technologies Sector, announces the creation of a women’s only riding essentials class. Team Kryptonite members, Jody Perewitz and Nicole Hoffman will visit select shops sharing their extensive experience and knowledge with women riders who may be just starting out. Both women have years of experience riding and racing or building motorcycles. The series of classes will kick off in June at Perewitz Cycle Fabrications in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

“Kryptonite knows from both published reports and our own experiences on the road, that more women are riding motorcycles than ever before,” said Karen Rizzo, Director of Marketing. “We also understand that these women may be new to riding and have questions or need some advice that they might not want to ask of “the guys.” We have a solution for that with our accomplished women riders, Jody and Nicole, who will share their expertise, tips and general information with these women.”

Both Perewitz and Hoffman will lead the 1-2 hour class. They will talk about their backgrounds and educate the attendees about safety, simple maintenance, riding gear, resources available and security tips. The ladies will be treated to snacks, raffle prizes and receive a certificate at the completion of the event.

“This isn’t about just creating a pink product and hoping women buy it,” continued Rizzo. “We are offering women the chance to walk into a dealer for the first time and really learn about riding from women with invaluable experience.”

cyclesource bike

THE CYCLE SOURCE MAGAZINE QUESTION OF THE WEEK– Is this a bobber? No, the title of the issue is “Choppers Rule,” and I was asking if that bike fits the definition of a chopper. I think it does but some of the other guys think it’s closer to a bobber. I pointed out that in the traditional sense, since this was not done to a stock chassis, that the frame rake and stretch alone take it completely out of the bobber category.

Chris Callen
Editor Cycle Source Magazine

I responded that there’s nothing bobber about this Chopper. Bobbers have stock or stock configuration frames, stock front ends and bobbed stock fenders and tanks. Plus bobbers don’t have highbars. Lately there are a lot of bobber styled custom bikes that generally have stock configuration frames, stock length traditional front ends and bobbed custom sheet metal. And that’s how it’s written in the Code of the West.–Bandit

Hey,

It’s pre-Daytona week and the rumors are flying. Daytona Vendor spot sales are down 40 percent, so maybe the traffic won’t be as harried, but the party action is just as fierce. There’s a party, display, grand opening, run or show every goddamn second.

BIG DOG 2009 WOLF PREVIEW– Big Dog Motorcycles used the annual V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati to provide dealers with a ‘sneak peek’ of the first of the new models for its proposed 2009 model range. Big Dog’s Wolf is due for an official release in September of 2008. However, at the time of going to print the final specification has not yet been clarified.

What is known about the bike is that the frame will feature a single downtube fit with a radical swingarm design. The tire sizes will be 130/60R-23 front and 220/50R-20 rear. The narrower rear tire follows a trend which company founder and CEO, Sheldon Coleman, outlined at the company’s recent dealer presentation in California, and which has been set by this year’s Mutt, with its 250-section tire deviating from the company’s more normal fitment of a 300.

Motive power for the Wolf will be provided by an S&S 121ci X-Wedge, with electronic fuel injection, mated to a six-speed BDM Balance-Drive transmission.

The company says an extensive chrome package will be offered as standard and there will also be an optional highly-styled saddlebag.

He throws the kite up in the air, the wind catches it for a few seconds, then it comes crashing back down to earth. He tries this a few more times with no success. All the while, his wife is watching from the kitchen window, muttering to herself how men need to be told how to do everything.

She opens the window and yells to her husband, “You need a piece of tail.”

The man turns with a confused look on his face and says, “Make up your mind! Last night, you told me to go fly a kite.”

RALLY IN THE ALLEY NEEDS SPONSORS AND PROMO ITEMS–Hey Bandit,We are having a Rally in the Alley on April 26th here in little ole Sierra Vista, AZ. Want to know if you have anything we can give away to promote Bikernet.com or just to give as door prizes. This event is open to all makes of bikes so it will be a good way to introduce your new site (forgot the name since I ride a Harley). We should have around 200 bikes attending. Poker run, live music, food, and a bunch of Bros and biker chicks hanging around.

Stickers, decals, magazines, promotional items, t-shirts, or anything you have just lying around will be fine. If you can’t, totally understand.

ANOTHER CROCKER CONNECTION IN SOLVANG, CALIFORNIA– Read the article on Crocker motorcycle today. There is a motorcycle museum not far from my place in Santa Maria CA. The town is called Solvang. They have bike museum there only open on the weekends. They have a black Crocker that is just badass. The attendant had no information on where the bike came from, it just showed up. Guess you can’t get much good help these days. They have a large collection of most every bike manufacturer.

Your Bikernet web site is great, it is so POLITICALLY INCORRECT, keep up the good work.

FLORIDA REPORT REVIEW–Just read Rogue’s article on ABATE of Florida. Very right on. Things are getting a little out of hand here in Florida and we aren’t getting any representation to speak of. I have been riding since 1969 and have been thru it.

In the early ’70s when I spent some time in so-cal, it was a simple matter to go to the DMV, take a short test and be on your way with a motorcycle license. Years later I am back in Florida and getting a drivers license after a number of years of suspension. I was never asked about needing or wanting a motorcycle endorsement.

Now, at the age of 56 and having ridden most of my adult life, I will have to go to school. Three years ago, I had a need for a commercial license. I read the hand-book, and practiced for a few days pulling a trailer with my brothers dump truck. I passed the written test at DMV. I was sent to a school to take the driving test. There are only three state run testing sites and none are close.

Passed the driving test first try and was given a Class A license. Ain’t that a kick. I have never driven a tractor-trailer but I get a license without going to school. Kind of pisses me off that I will have to be schooled to ride when I have been doing it for years.

Good luck at Maxton. Hope you put a hurt on Carl’s Speed Shop entry.

HEY BIKERNET– I just got done reading Thursdays news I will say this, I started reading E.R. around 73/74. Bikernet is on par with that publication at that time frame. That is a good thing it is geared more towards the average H-D owner on a realistic budget as far as modifying a bike is concerned. The feature bikes and articles are well done and show the readers what trends and styles are in.

I like the street fighter idea and look forward to following the progress of the build. Time to mink oil my leathers.

sturgis motorcycle museum new logo

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED–February, 2008 – for more information, contact Christine Paige Diers, (605) 347-2001 – – The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the Hall of Fame inductees for 2008.

Charlie St. Clair (Schultz), J.C. “Pappy” Hoel Outstanding Achievement Award – Charlie has been the Executive Director of the Laconia Motorcycle Week in New Hampshire for the last 16 years. During that time, he has worked to build and sustain working relationships between the big three national rallies – Sturgis, Laconia and Daytona. He is a long-time rider, participant in the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and advocate for the collective rights of motorcyclists everywhere. Because of his continued efforts to build relationships with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Charlie has been awarded the J.C. “Pappy” Hoel Outstanding Achievement Award.

Kenny Price, Founder’s Award – Kenny Price started out at age 13 wanting to tweak a little more power from his 1956 Vespa. From those humble beginnings, Kenny has continued to introduce new and innovative products to support the motorcycle industry, at the same time growing his business, Samson Motorcycle Products, Inc. Kenny is a long-time enthusiastic supporter of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and currently has 13 classic and rare collectible motorcycles on display in the museum – earning him the 2008 Founder’s Award.

Becky Brown – Nearly 30 years ago, Becky Brown founded WOMEN IN THE WIND (W.I.T.W.), the International women’s motorcycle organization. The organization not only united women riders, but promoted a comfortable way for more women to get into riding. Brown has been portrayed in the film documentary “She Lives to Ride” by film maker Alice Stone.

Malcolm Smith – Malcolm is a pioneer of off-road motorcycling who gained fame for his accomplishments in the Baja 1000, and for his gold-medal winning rides in the International Six Day Enduro Competitions. Malcolm is also the star of the influential 1970s motorcycle movie On Any Sunday. This movie helped launch an explosion in the popularity of off-road motorcycling in America.

Cristine Sommer-Simmons – Cristine is a long-time motorcycle journalist who has written for a wide variety of motorcycling publications, co-founded Harley Women Magazine, and helped co-found the second chapter of Women in the Wind. Cristine is also a published author of a children’s book Patrick Wants to Ride and is currently working on a screenplay for an independent film about women motorcyclists.

Smiling Johnny Spiegelhoff – One of the original racers in the very first Black Hills Motor Classic in 1938, Spiegelhoff is credited by many as an important force in getting that first rally off to the right start. It was at Johnny’s insistence that the first race organizers sought and secured AMA sanctioning. Johnny then helped re-organize the racing program for the Sunday races that first year – adding races and events that more than doubled the excitement and racing program time for that Sunday.

The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Breakfast is scheduled on Wednesday, August 6 at 9:00 a.m. at the Holiday Inn in Spearfish, SD.

Breakfast tickets are available for a $25.00 donation, tables of eight for $250.00. Tickets can be purchased through the Museum 605.347.2001 or on line www.sturgismuseum.com

IT’S PARTY TIME–I’ve got to blaze out of the headquarters across town for Tony M. Hamster Birthday Party. What could I get my brother he doesn’t already have? Hell, all Hamsters are rich right? Bullshit. Most are just hard working stiffs in the MC business. And you know how the MC biz is right now. Some are struggling.

Mudflap girl came from Arlin Fatland’s 2Wheelers on Main in Daytona. Check out their shop.

So I made him a tool the guys at JIMS forgot to make. It’s a mudflap girl tool. Not just any mudflap girl tool, but a Western Mudflap Girl Tool. Maybe left-handed threads. What the hell. I’ll bet he doesn’t have one of these.

Then I gotta pack for Daytona. What’s the weather like down there? I need to check the Shovelhead over for the ride, so I’ll cut this short. But tomorrow I’m launching two features, Swedish show results from the master Horst and the next segment on the Lucky Devil project build, Root Beer. Adjustments had to be made to the drive line for alignment and we’ll show how the Rocky Boatman Valve-spring seat suspension was mounted. Then I may mount of set of new Knockout exhaust on Jeremiah’s bobber, if he shows up. Have a helluva weekend, and if you’re headed to Daytona, hopefully we’ll hook up.

CALL TO SEND LETTERS, A MUST– Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters is requesting an amendment to allow the SAFETEA-LU Section 2010 Grant funds to be used to promote helmet use in a letter sent to President of Senate Dick Cheney and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. This is nothing more than a raid on a fund that was intended for motorcycle awareness and education.

Motorcyclists across the nation fought hard for many years to get this grant money and the outlines for it’s usage were hammered out and agreed upon.

Consider writing letters to your Senators and Representatives asking them to do the following:
1. Write Sec. Peters and request she withdraw her proposed amendment.
2. Speak with your legislators against this letter in an attempt to gather votes against this amendment if she does not withdraw it and it becomes a written bill.
This way, you will be educating (not legislating) and maybe we can kill this whole idea before it gains support.
Please take time to act on this very important issue and pass bit around to your Email list. If you don’t we lose over $300,000 in Funds for MC Safety and Awareness and end up with a helmet law.

S&S ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF T-SERIES SERVICE MANUAL– LA CROSSE WI, (February 14, 2008) S&S Cycle is pleased to announce the release of another S&S Service Manual, this one focused on the T-Series engine.

Although the original three S&S Service Manuals were ground breaking products, there were a few flaws in them. The most obvious being they referred the technician to some of the S&S Instruction Sheets for information not supplied in the manual. This new manual has eliminated the need to research information elsewhere and gives the home or shop technician all the information they need in one package.

“The inclusion of the instruction sheet information added quite a bit of work to the normal service manual production routine,” said Howard Kelly, S&S Media and Advertising Supervisor. “It required a lot of time and effort from the Product Development and Training Departments to make this a comprehensive publication and it couldn’t have been done without all of their extra efforts-it is the best manual we have produced at this point” continued Kelly.

As found in the other S&S Service Manuals, the text is clear and direct, the photography is well lit and plentiful and the manual has a logical flow to it. The new S&S T-Series manual P/N 61-1002 will take a technician through the complete servicing of an S&S T124 or T124V, with extra information on the S&S oil pump and VFI (Variable Fuel Injection).

“This manual seemed to drag on forever in comparison to the first three, but in the end all the extra effort was worth it. This is just the tool that any technician would want at his side when working on an S&S T-Series engine,” said Charlie Hadayia, S&S Senior Race and Customer Support Manager.

More information on all S&S service manuals, engines, high performance components and apparel is available at your local S&S dealer or at

BIKERNET TRAVEL ADVICE–A man boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crab. A female crew member took the box and promised to put it in the Crew’s’ refrigerator, which she did. The man firmly advised her that he was holding her personally Responsible for the crabs staying frozen, and proceeded to rant At her about what would happen if she let them thaw out.

She was annoyed by his behavior.

Shortly before landing in New York, she announced over the intercom To the entire cabin, “Would the gentleman who gave me the crabs in New Orleans, please raise your hand?”

Not one hand went up..so she took them home and ate them herself.

IT’S PARTY TIME–I need to jump in the shower and peel to my son’s birthday party. We have a series of killer bike features headed your way, plus road stories, two complete bike builds and fiction. Oh, and two girl features are being written by the Humble Johnny White in Texas.

We’re hoping to work with Iron Horse Trikes on a trike build with a concept drawing by Chris Kallas. This should be a kick. I’m going to roll out and visit Derringer Motorcycles tomorrow. I’ll report back. I know there’s more, but I want to end on a couple of positive notes. Ducati North America reported increased sales in 2007, passing the 10,000 mark for the first time. J.D. Power and Associates released overall satisfaction findings with motorcycle ownership. It has increased significantly over the last five years. This applies to new bike ownership and not 40-year-old Panheads. So life is good on this wild little planet. This info came from Motorcycle Consumer New for March. They’re first color issue ever. Congrats!

HOME TECH TIP FROM BIKERNET–A man wakes up in the hospital, bandaged from head to foot. The doctor comes in and says, ‘Ah, I see you’ve regained consciousness. Now, you probably won’t remember, but you were in a pile-up on the freeway. You’re going to be okay, you’ll walk again and everything, but….. something happened. I’m trying to break this gently, but the fact is, your willy was chopped off in the wreck, and we were unable to find it.’

The man groans, but the doctor goes on, ‘You’ve got $9000 in insurance compensation coming to you, and we have the technology now to build you a new willy that will work as well as your old one did – better in fact! But the thing is, it doesn’t come cheap. It’s $1000 an inch.’

The man perks up at this.

‘So,’ the doctor says, ‘it’s for you to decide how many inches you want. But it’s something you’d better discuss with your wife. I mean, if you had a five inch one before, and you decide to go for a nine incher, she might be a bit put out. But if you had a nine inch one before, and you decide only to invest in a five incher this time, she might be disappointed. So it’s important that she plays a role in helping you make the decision.’

The man agrees to talk with his wife. The doctor comes back the next day.’So,’ says the doctor, ‘have you spoken with your wife?’

‘I have,’ says the man.

‘And has she helped you in making the decision?’

‘She has,’ says the man.

‘And what is it?’ asks the doctor.

‘We’re getting a new kitchen.’

Explorer

AD BOIVIN OPENS UP THE SNOW BIKE MARKET WITH THE EXPLORER– From the World Leader SnowBike Manufacturer and inventor of the Snow Hawk, AD Boivin presents its new product, the EXPLORER.

“The EXPLORER is the result of 10 years of our SnowBike expertise,” says President Denis Boivin. “It’s time for the Powersports community to really discover the SnowBike Sport. All owners of Motocross, Enduro and Supermoto bikes have now the opportunity to discover this unique dimension to ride a bike on snow. This product also answers the many requests we have for an intermediate vehicle between the Junior series and the big bore 800cc,” says Mr. Boivin.

This totally new and innovative All Terrain / All season system is a fully adjustable system that fits almost any brand of motocross, enduro and supermoto motorcycles.

The TAS (Twin Axis Ski) is a copy of the extraordinary Snow Hawk ski. Its ability to stay on the ground while the bike is leaning gives increased stability on hard packed snow.

Quick release pins allow the track to move from the front to the back of the bike within seconds. The WTA (Weight Transfer Adjustment) will give total freedom to the rider by adjusting the track according to the riding conditions. This versatility is unequal in the industry.

Another exclusive device on the EXPLORER is the TAA (Track Attack Angle). This adjustment is allowed by a slotted front ski adaptor which permits to raise the front of the bike up to 4 inches. By adjusting the height, the attack angle of the track will vary and give an optimal traction in any conditions.

On top of being fully adjustable, light, all terrain and all season, the EXPLORER keeps the original parts of the motorcycle. By leaving the swing arm, the brake, the disk brake and the shock absorber in place, the EXPLORER is easy to install and adds an average of only 30 pounds to the original weight of the bike.

After the Snow Hawk and the ZX2 Composite Suspension, AD Boivin is once again coming up with a high quality, nicely designed and efficient product. See your local dealer for more infos and order yours. For videos and pictures visit www.adboivin.com .

HOMEWARD BOUND SPECIAL OPS SOLDIER REWARDS HIMSELF WITH CUSTOM BUILT CHOPPER– The sudden clamor of two inbound HH-60 Blackhawk helicopters cut short Ash Spurlin and his squad’s hushed conversations. Spurlin, a Special Ops Squad Leader with the US Army, ordered his men to start their final gear check and to form a circle of security around the landing zone. Once the area was secured, Spurlin marked their position with an infrared strobe. The Blackhawk’s landed easily. Within 60 seconds, both helicopters and men were airborne.

No lights, no talking, just his own thoughts to deal with for the next fifteen minutes of flight. With the side doors open, the cool Afghan air was a nice break from the stifling heat on the ground. Spurlin positioned himself with his legs hanging out the side door of the Blackhawk and used his night vision goggles to scan the area below for possible hostile fire. The wind pushing against his helmet and moving his pant legs only reminded him of riding his Road King back home in California. No lights, no talking, just thoughts of cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway. No sweaty body armor, or M4 rifle, just a t-shirt, boots and his favorite jeans. Instead of the heinous helicopter engine, it was a V-Twin roaring. Right then Spurlin knew that while he couldn’t control when he would return home, he could still make plans for what he would do once there. He would ride his newest custom built chopper!

Guilty2

As his helicopter touched down on the rooftop of a Taliban stronghold, all six men looked at one another, each knowing what the other was thinking, but no one saying a word. Within seconds the men are out, the helicopters are gone, and so are the thoughts of grabbing that V-twins throttle. Anyway, this is a different type of adrenaline rush. The mission completed, Spurlin debriefs his superiors, eats and logs onto his Yahoo account. He is intent on finding from friends in the industry who they’d recommend for his next build. That’s how he found Guilty Customs and Errant, his next and third custom motorcycle.

Errant, part of Guilty Customs “Last Chance” line, caught Spurlin’s attention with its 70’s dragster styled influences. Spurlin comments about his decision to have his next chopper built by Guilty Customs: “Since I had two bobber styled bikes that were similar in looks, I wanted something different, but dependable and affordable. One of my friends told me about Guilty Customs so I called and spoke with Cj. We talked for about an hour. I didn’t feel like it was a business call, which is when I knew 100 percent, this company was the kind of business I’d always heard my father and grandfather talk about. Not cookie cutter $65,000 choppers or assembly line bikes, but actual one-on-one discussions about my next bike.””Having the opportunity to build a bike for Ash is an honor. We are extremely proud that he will be riding a Guilty chopper” says CJ Hanlon, owner of Guilty Customs. “Each time we speak with Ash, either before or after a mission, it poignantly reminds us of the sacrifices these soldiers (and their families) are making to defend our country. Even the companies that supply our parts have a unique interest in this build. Everyone wants to make this bike really special for Ash.”

Spurlin and Hanlon have even started talks about a cross-country ride to raise monies for the widows and families of soldiers killed in battle. It gives us one more reason to want to see this soldier return safely home.

Guilty Customs, LLC (www.guiltycustoms.com) is a custom motorcycle company that is quickly establishing itself in the custom chopper industry by bringing to the public innovative, dependable and affordable custom motorcycles and parts.

BIKERNET.COM FAMILY COUNSELOR DISCUSSES PREGNANCY–An 18 year-old girl tells her Mum that she has missed her period for two months.Very worried, the mother goes to the Chemist and buys a pregnancy kit. The test result shows that the girl is pregnant.Shouting, cursing, crying, the mother says, “Who was the pig that did this to you? I want to know!”

The girl picks up the phone and makes a call. Half an hour later a Ferrari stops in front of their house; a mature and distinguished man with grey hair and impeccably dressed in an Armani suit steps out of the Ferrari and enters the house.

He sits in the living room with the father, mother, and the girl and tells them:”Good morning, your daughter has informed me of the problem. I can’t marry her because of my personal family situation but I’ll take charge.I will pay all costs and provide for your daughter for the rest of her life.Additionally, if a girl is born I will bequeath her 2 retail stores, a townhouse, a beachfront villa and a ?2,000,000 bank account.

If a boy is born, my legacy will be a couple of factories and a ?4,000,000 bank account. If twins, they will receive a factory and ?2,000,000 each.

However, if there is a miscarriage, I’m not really sure what to do. What do you suggest?”

At this point, the girls father, who had remained silent, places a hand firmly on the man’s shoulder and tells him, “You screw her again.”

THE WEDDING TEST– I was a very happy man. My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year, and so we decided to get married. There was only one little thing bothering me…It was her beautiful younger sister. My prospective sister-in-law was twenty-two, wore very tight miniskirts, and generally was bra-less. It had to be deliberate.

One day her “little” sister called and asked me to come over to check the wedding invitations. She was alone when I arrived, and she whispered to me that she had feelings and desires for me that she couldn’t overcome. She told me that she wanted me just once before I got married and committed my life to her sister.

Well, I was in total shock, and couldn’t say a word. She said, “I’m going upstairs to my bedroom, and if you want one last wild fling, just come up and get me.” I was stunned and frozen in shock as I watched her go up the stairs. I stood there for a moment, then turned and made a beeline straight to the front door. I opened the door, and headed straight towards my car.

Lo and behold, my entire future family was standing outside, all clapping! With tears in his eyes, my father-in-law hugged me and said, “We are very happy that you have passed our little test. We couldn’t ask for a better man for our daughter. Welcome to the family.” And the moral of this story is:

Always keep your condoms in your car.

BREW DUDE SCORES IN COLUMBUS–Well, we went to the Columbus Easyrider Show to compete and enjoy some time with friends. The show had several bikes I have never seen and attendance was great! Met several from Bikernet and the Easyriders Forum board. The bike received a 1st in class, which I was thrilled. Later, they had the 5 2008 Easyriders VQ Awards. When they came to Old School Builder of the Year I was listening who received it. When they called out my name I knew I misheard and then my pic flashed up on the screen and was dazed. Still am! I also saw banners and on the screen several times Bikernet.com as a sponsor. I want to say THANKS to all the Easyrider Staff and for the comments and e-mails we have received.

BIKERNET SOUTH AFRICAN CORRESPONDENT CHECKS IN–Hey old sage, How are you doin?. I haven’t been buggin you because I’ve been away on vacation. Went to the east coast of the country to get away from my life. I never really thought about work much until I would hear the familiar sound of a V- twin echoing off the buildings at two in the morning. One knows instinctively where the rider has been. You also hope he gets home safely and doesn’t feel too bad in the morning.

Man, I envy the dudes who ride down the coast roads and I wish I had had a bike down there. One morning I went looking for an old fishing buddy Sidney (Ex Navy diver who got the bends when going back to save a fellow diver in trouble. He’s damaged and drinks too much. but I love the dude like a brother) who drifts from one construction site to the next doing most anything they tell him to. I could not find him. but I met a very interesting dude who hails from your neck of the woods. Henry came to South Africa ten years ago on vacation and someone suggested Margate which is a cool town on the east coast. He never left and is now one of the top property developers in the area.

When I asked why he chose to live here he said that the only difference between Margate and the Ventura, California, area was that everything is ten times cheaper and we all drive on the wrong side of the road otherwise they are the same. Go figure. I feel less bad about living here, but damn I HAVE to relocate to the coast. The riding is excellent and gas is cheap. I’m thinking about inviting some of my e-mail buddies to come over to escape the winter over there. When my bikes are done there are a few dudes in the States I’m definitely going to convince to make the trip.

A lot of guys from the US have been very good to me, sending me parts and stuff at no cost at all, which I really appreciate. Who said bikers are bad dudes?

I just had a look at Ralph’s board tracker. This guy makes me want to give up what I’m doing and try something else. Geez, he’s going to make some serious waves and send a lot of builders scurrying for cover. It’s perfect. I thought the red bobber he did for the giveaway was the business but now fu?.He finished 26th in that AMD show? Who was judging, the blind?

I’ve bent your ear for too long and I’m going to look at the wheels and sprotor caliper I just received from John Koster at Scooters in Florida. He’s the only dude I know who gives service, good prices, quality and most of all the correct parts. Thank God for the internet and sites like Bikernet and Club Chopper. Without you guys I would be nowhere.

SHIPPING 2008 D&D PERFORMANCE EXHAUST PIPES ON HARLEY-DAVIDSON FATBOY AND DEUCE–Slip On Pipes From D&D Roar on Fat Boy & Deuce Motorcycles.

D&D Performance Enterprises are shipping the 2008 Fat Cat slip-ons exhaust pipes for the Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Softail and Deuce motorcycles. Enthusiasts can choose between a slash cut even cut or a staggered cut for one of Harley’s most popular models.

The Harley-Davidson Fat Boy and Deuce Softail slip-on pipes are manufactured with show chrome and full wrap heat shields, which keep all discoloration out of sight. Enthusiasts can also select the black coating option as an alternative to chrome.

The entire line of D&D performance exhaust pipes for the softail family of Harley motorcycles are built with direct fitment that requires no cutting, welding or grinding.

Every Harley-Davidson Fat Boy slip-on pipe is torture tested on D&D’s state-of-the-art in-house Super Flow Eddy Current Ram Air dynamometer. This is done in combination with the Super Flow Bench and the first in the industry, multi cylinder Lambda Fuel Air Ratio Sensors, which are interfaced with the dynamometer for real time meter and graph analysis.

This means that performance is always increased with a D & D exhaust pipe. They sound awesome because we tuned them that way.

BANDIT’S BEDROLL JOURNEY AND NO, THAT AIN’T SUSHI– I thought about the Old West and the bedrolls the cowboys used to carry their shit, and it came to me. Something over the headlight, as long as it wasn’t too heavy, could do the trick. The bike would maintain its nasty profile, I could still pack someone on the back, and carry my shit.

As I wound through the canyon, my mind went to work on the bedroll concept. Could it carry all I wanted to pack? Another question smacked me as I rounded another corner and caught a glimpse of the Pacific lapping the Malibu shores in the distance. What about a tool bag? The short answer is yes, the perfect bag for the job.

Bandit’s Bed Roll is the perfect combo of tool bag and weekender engineered by the man that delivers form and function and keeps your ride looking clean. So pull out your wallet and click here to get your official Bandit Bed Roll Today.

MRF STRONGLY OPPOSES US DOT ATTACK ON MOTORCYCLE TRAINING FUNDS–The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has learned that United States Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters sent letters to Capitol Hill with draft legislation outlining her intention to raid the 2010 motorcycle training and awareness funds set aside by Congress in the last Highway Bill (PL 109-59). Peters announced on Thursday, February 14 that she would like to see the earmarked training and awareness funds made available to promote the use of helmets in individual states.

“The MRF is extremely disappointed that Mrs. Peters would choose this small, yet critical, grant program to raid. We understand her desire to encourage helmet use, but couldn’t the Secretary of Transportation find a more suitable program to fund her personal helmet hunt?” said Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations for the MRF.

The 2010 funds were a direct result of years of intense lobbying by state motorcyclists’ rights organizations (SMROs) and individual motorcyclists from across this country, and were intended for two very specific aspects of motorcycle safety — motorcycle rider education and motorist awareness of motorcycles. These two aspects of motorcycle safety have been grossly under-funded at the state level for years, often solely at the direct expense of motorcyclists themselves through licensing and registration fees.

The 2010 funding program, in its second year, is a way for the motorcyclists of this country to get a little help from the feds to save lives. The fact is that helmet use has always been a major plank in the platform at the US Department of Transportation (DOT). So why now take away funds desperately needed for other areas of motorcycle safety? The training and awareness programs in statewide operation now are in jeopardy of reduced or zero funding every year. This federal program was designed to allow a trickle of cash to the states to at least keep current programs running. Should Peters get her way, that trickle becomes nothing but a drip. In addition, the current 2010 grant program is not funding failing programs. In order to qualify for the grant, each state has to demonstrate success in its programs by reducing fatalities.

Secretary Peters narrowly skates around an existing law that bans the federal government from lobbying states to enact statewide legislation. She does this by not asking that the money be used for helmet LAW advocacy, but by asking the money be used for helmet USE advocacy.

What’s actually happened and how concerned do we need to be? You may be asking yourself that very question about now. Here is the real worldscenario: Mary Peters has sent two letters to Congress – one to Speaker Pelosi and the other to Senate President Cheney. The letters include draft legislation that would amend section 2010 to allow funds to be used for the promotion of helmet use.

NEW ILLINOIS LAW–Wow: Illinois has no helmet law. Now, the government is coming in as surrogate parent in that you have to obtain a child passenger permit, for $100, to allow your child under the age of 16 to ride without a helmet. Michigan started with an opt out bill, allowing them to ride without a helmet if they purchased the $100 dollar a year permit.

Now Illinois is following suit with children under 16. Michigan’s bill died and I hope this one does too.

BIKERNET READER MAKES SUGGESTION TO ERIC BUELL–Just read about Eric’s Buell rotor install. It’s a great idea and thework in very good looking. Unfortunately he put the rotor on the wrongside for the caliper to work correctly. He now has the tire rotatinginto the wrong end of the caliper. This will make the pads wearexcessively fast.

Buell used a progressive design to maximize thebraking force as well as make the pads last longer. Eric has itinstalled backwards. In his install the largest pot gets the leadingedge.

If he mounted it on the opposite side it would work properly. That’s thesame reason I can’t use my Buell rotor and caliper now that I switchedto a springer. The caliper won’t be installed correctly. To make it workEric needs to buy the after market calipers that the Buell ones lookjust like (you know the brand). They can be purchased in the correctorientation for Eric’s bike. I don’t believe the Buell ones areavailable for the opposite side.

TRANSPORTATION CHIEF CALLS FOR HELMET USEU.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters sent legislation to Congress on February 14th seeking to divert funding from rider training and motorcycle awareness funds to promote helmet use.

According to the Department of Transportation, the legislation submitted to Congress would allow states to use federal motorcycle safety funding to promote the use of motorcycle helmets. Currently, states are limited to using the funds for motorcycle safety training and awareness programs only.

In spite of a Congressional ban on the federal agency lobbying state legislatures in favor of passing helmet laws, Secretary Peters wrote letters to House and Senate leaders ?seeking greater flexibility for states to target one of the leading causes of motorcycle deaths across the nation ? riding without a helmet.?

?Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters is requesting an amendment to allow the SAFETEA-LU Section 2010 Grant funds to be used to promote helmet use in a letter sent to President of Senate Dick Cheney and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi,? explained Sputnik, Chairman of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF). ?This is nothing more than a raid on a fund that was intended for motorcycle awareness and education. Motorcyclists across the nation fought hard for many years to get this grant money and the outlines for its usage were hammered out and agreed upon.?

Consider writing letters to your Senators and Representatives asking them to do the following:
1. Write Secretary Peters and request she withdraw her proposed amendment.
2. Speak with your legislators against this letter in an attempt to gather votes against this amendment if she does not withdraw it and it becomes a written bill.

INCREASED GLOBAL DEMAND FOR MOTORCYCLES FORECASTGlobal demand for motorcycles is projected to exceed 59 million unites in 2011. According to a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm, the demand for motorcycles is forecast to advance 6.0 percent annually to 59 million units in 2011, representing $49 billion in manufacturers’ sales.

?This growth emanates from a mix of developed market incremental improvements and emerging market expansions,? quoted the independent report released February 7th. ?Demand for all categories of motorcycles is expected to remain healthy, despite the plateauing of growth in key markets such as China, which is rapidly transitioning away from motorcycles and toward cars for its transportation needs.?

These and other trends, including market share and company profiles, are presented in “World Motorcycles”, a market research study conducted by The Feedonia Group, an unbiased international business analyst with Fortune 500 clientele. The most rapid growth will occur in developing markets, where rising income levels and the introduction of higher quality machines featuring the latest technologies will fuel demand.

?This growth will be tempered in part by the increasing number of restrictions or outright bans on motorcycle use in urban areas in Asia,? according to their research. ?In developed markets, fuel prices and increasing restrictions on car use in some regions such as Western Europe are stoking interest in the exceptional fuel economy and cost effectiveness motorcycles offer. While the market for large and expensive high displacement motorcycles will also remain moderately strong, concerns regarding future demand have emerged due to the aging of the customer base, especially in the United States and Western Europe.?

Two separate motorcycle markets exist, as broken down in the report. The first centers on the industrialized Triad (the US, Japan and Western Europe), where motorcycles are seen as pleasure vehicles. The other, much larger market in unit terms exists in the emerging economies of Asia, Latin America and the Africa/Mideast region, where motorcycles are seen as primary family and work vehicles. ?While Asia is dominant in terms of unit volume, most key players derive far higher revenues per unit from sales in developed markets such as North America,? says the study.

VISION ZEROAn international conference has been convened to investigate methods of eliminating all risk on the roads, and the possibility of eliminating motorcycles as well. Government transport advisors from across the European Union gathered in Brussels for the three-day conference beginning February 12th, called: ?Safe Highways of the Future? exploring technologies and changes required to enable zero deaths on Europe?s roads to become a reality.?

Presenters included Swedish transport advisor Claes Tingvall who devised the ?Vision Zero? transportation policy. Vision Zero aims to eliminate all deaths on the roads through technology, and Tingvall famously said on TV: ?There is no room for motorcycles in Vision Zero.?

Rune Elvik, a Norwegian transport advisor, recently said a debate was needed on whether motorcycles should be allowed on the roads in order for Vision Zero to progress.

Topics of the conference included ?Safer Vehicles By Design?.

BRITISH MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY DEMANDS BETTER TREATMENT FOR BIKERSUnited Kingdom motorcycle industry leaders want the British government, legislators, local authorities and transport planners to treat motorcycling as a serious, relevant alternative to cars, buses and trains. David Taylor, chief executive of the UK Motor Cycle Industry Association, made this plain only days after news of an 8.6 percent rise in motorcycle, scooter and moped registrations in 2007 ? the biggest jump in seven years.

“There are more than 1.2-million powered two-wheelers on UK roads,” he told media sources on January 22, 2008. “After several years of flat sales, there are strong indications that people are seeing PTW’s as practical, relevant personal transport They are part of the solution to traffic congestion and pollution – it’s time motorcyclists were properly considered and treated seriously ‘There are more than 1.2-million powered two-wheelers on UK roads’.”

“All too often car owners, commercial vehicles and public transport take priority while those on two wheels are ignored or an afterthought,” Taylor added. “We want equality and the incentives that come with the recognition that PTW’s ease traffic and parking congestion, reduce emissions and provide reliable and efficient personal transport.”

In particular, the MCIA wants:Government transport policies that acknowledge PTW’s as a viable alternative to tackle congestion and CO2.Better roads and faster and more efficient road maintenance. An end to an unforgiving road infrastructure clearly designed with not all road users in mind.

The promotion of PTW’s as a legitimate and relevant congestion-busting means of travel, including their exemption from road pricing, parking and congestion charges, access to bus lanes and secure parking.A lower scale of vehicle excise duty; no motorcycle should be taxed more than the smallest car.

The UK government announced a motorcycle strategy in 2005 but little had been done with implementation. PTW’s were almost ignored in the government’s latest core transport policy paper ?Towards a Sustainable Transport Policy?. This, Taylor said, was not good enough.

“The industry feels, despite warm words from ministers, ‘mainstreaming’ of motorcycling in transport policy isn’t happening. There should be no barriers to the development of motorcycling, better protection for riders and recognition of motorcycling as a legitimate form of transport.”

Here’s a shot of the first race in 1938.

BIKIES INVITED INTO AUSTRIALIAN PARLIAMENT FOR DEBATEMembers of the Gypsy Jokers, Finks and Hells Angels were among guests at Parliament House for a February 8th briefing on new laws being introduced by the State Government to combat outlaw motorcycle clubs, and Democrats MP Sandra Kanck plunged herself into controversy by inviting the ?bikies? to participate in the debate.

MP Kanck defended the presence of the outlaw motorcycle club members saying people who are affected by legislation should be consulted before it becomes law. The seminar was organized by Ms Kanck to highlight concerns the legislation will unfairly target people who are not involved in criminal acts, such as bikers who belong to the Longriders Christian Motorcycle Club who?s homes have been raided by police during anti-bikie efforts.

Under the laws, scheduled to be debated soon in the House of Assembly, South Australians who have contact with bikies at least six times a year will face a minimum of five years in jail. The Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Bill 2007 also will enable the Police Commissioner, Mal Hyde, to obtain orders from the Attorney-General, Michael Atkinson, declaring bikie gangs illegal.

Anyone involved with the gangs, or who has any contact with them, can then be served with orders restricting their movements based on police intelligence, which must remain secret.

Prominent criminal defense lawyer Craig Caldicott told the gathering that the new laws were an attempt “to use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.”

“They are basically an overkill,” Caldicott said. “It is the only piece of legislation in Australia aimed at a group of people who wear leather jackets.”

COLORS SOUGHT FOR MOTORCYCLE MUSEUMThe Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is seeking vests with patches to expand an existing exhibit about motorcycle clubs.

?I’m looking to reach out to Motorcycle Clubs who might be willing to have their colors on display,? said Christine Paige Diers, Executive Director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame in South Dakota.

?One of the exhibits we’ve had on display for the last six to eight months is an exhibit about Motorcycle Clubs,? explained Diers. ?As part of the exhibit, we had a number of vests with patches representing a variety of clubs. Unfortunately, the owner of those patches has reclaimed his collection. We’re in the process of trying to rebuild the display and are looking for clubs that might be interested.?

The idea of this exhibit is to educate the public about the history of motorcycling and present a fair-minded representation of motorcycle clubs in their many forms, she said. ?I’d like to rebuild the exhibit with themed sections to display, including women’s clubs, family oriented clubs, law enforcement clubs and veterans clubs.?

Anyone interested in loaning a jacket, vest or patch, or even a photo, to the museum for a time period of one to two years, along with a brief club description or history, should contact her at christine@sturgismuseum.com or phone 605-347-2001.

Lone Star Choppers

WEIRD NEWS: CRASH ABSORBER INVENTED FOR MOTORCYCLESA new design of crash absorber can combat the type of accident where motorcyclists run into something and are then killed by the bike pivoting over the front wheel and impacting on the rider. Iranian inventor Mohammad Hassan Shorabi has come up with a construction that absorbs some of the impact energy and transfers the residue of the impact reaction force to the back axle. He has incorporated the idea into a child?s bike so it can travel as personal airline baggage.

It comprises a strong construction that projects just forward of the front wheel and is able to slide down the main body of the bike as the various parts of it collapse, bend and break. Shorabi has installed it on two different motorcycles, and a friend ?without mind? tested it by riding it into a wall ? and survived the experience.

LEGISLATIVE QUESTION OF THE DAY– My question is: A very important question!!

Has there been a case involving false advertising, of a kind, to accuse helmet manufacturers of false labeling? When there is NOT an approved helmet list obtainable (to come into possession of; get, acquire, or procure, as through an effort or by a request) . NHTSA does NOT certify or approve helmets they set a performance standard. NTSB does NOT certify or approve helmets, they investigate transportation issues. Neither have a list of approved helmets!

A deceptive trade practice is an activity in which an individual or business engages that is calculated to mislead or lure the public into purchasing a product or service. (As in False labeling of DOT stickers to helmets) (a word or phrase indicating that what follows belongs in a particular category or classification ), false advertising and odometer tampering are two of the most blatant examples of this commercial lying. Such activities are given special status as offenses against the citizenry in general and are therefore accorded by law special enforcement status.

Deceptive trade practices result in criminal prosecution in some states; in others, statutes provide for private enforcement, whereby a citizen is entitled to sue a business for violating deceptive trade practice laws and may be able to recover punitive damages and/or statutory fines. The attorney general of the state may also bring a lawsuit against an offending business enterprise.

Because a deceptive trade practice may affect individuals or businesses from more than one state, a number of states have adopted the standardized Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act (UDTPA). The Uniform Act does not add or detract from the law of any one state; rather, it is inclusive and tends to cover, in general terms, all the prohibitions and issues addressed in state law in this area. For example, the Uniform Act prohibits making deceptive representations in connection with commercial goods. This obviously covers odometer tampering, but it also addresses all forms of deception in the marketing or advertising of goods and services. Those states that have not adopted the UDTPA have laws similar to it.

There is little controversy among the states over what activity amounts to a deceptive trade practice. However, there is a great deal of variety concerning the remedies available for the violations and who may sue for those violations. There are two main purposes of the statutes providing for remedies for businesses engaging in unlawful activity: (1) injunctions or restraining orders forbidding the continued deceptive trade practice and (2) punishment via fines, damages, and imprisonment. But because businesses are generally in violation of deceptive trade practice laws, and because it is difficult to determine whom to punish in the violating business, fines are generally the most effective method of extracting restitution.

Garry:

Very good point. A few years ago, I contacted my state (Wisconsin) Consumer Protection agency, located in Madison, Wisconsin. My question was, how can helmet manufacturers advertise that their product was DOT approved? Most HD dealerships and shops had helmets in boxes with this claim in the advertisements. Also, HD and others had this claim in magazine ads. Wisconsin law prohibits false advertisement.

The Consumer Protection agency said they would look into this. The very next year, HD and most others have changed their ads to something like “DOT compliant” or meets the DOT standard.

So I know there was something to this. If there are ads still out there in some states, using the DOT approved language, one needs to check with the Consumer Protection agency in that state and submit a complaint.

AMA SEEKS URGENT GRASSROOTS ACTION TO END HEALTH INSURANCE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST MOTORCYCLISTS–More than 100 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have co-sponsored a bill that would end health insurance discrimination against motorcyclists and others who participate in legal recreational activities or use their motorcycles for transportation.

While the action is significant, there is still much work to be done, according to AMA Vice President for Government Relations Edward Moreland.

TAKE ACTION NOW. You can easily contact your U.S. Representative on this issue through the AMA Rapid Response Center:

http://tinyurl.com/2nxass

“The AMA is calling on motorcyclists and others who face health insurance discrimination to urge their U.S. Representatives to support H.R. 1076, known as the HIPAA Recreational Injury Technical Correction Act,” said Moreland. “Time is short. The bill has broad bi-partisan support but we need 218 votes for passage. If we don’t act by April, we will likely miss our chance for legislative action in 2008.”

Health insurance discrimination can have a devastating financial effect on families and has been the focus of efforts by the AMA and other groups for many years. Following the passage of the original HIPAA legislation in 2001, bureaucrats at the Department of Health and Human Services created a loophole that allowed insurance companies to deny benefits to people who are injured while participating in legal recreational activities, such as riding motorcycles or off-road vehicles, horseback riding, skiing, and other activities. H.R. 1076 will close that loophole.

Rep. Michael Burgess, M.D. (R-Texas) has worked diligently to get H.R. 1076 passed. “Laws like HIPAA are passed to protect people,” he said. “Sometimes they have unintended consequences. When this happens, Congress has an obligation to fix the loopholes and that?s what this bill does.”

“No one should be denied health coverage for no reason other than they enjoy snowmobiles, motorcycles or other recreational activities,” said Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), the lead Democrat sponsoring the bill. “This legislation would enforce the original intent of Congress and ensure recreational enthusiasts are not discriminated against.”In the last Congress, the U.S. Senate passed a companion bill by unanimous consent, but the bigger challenge has been getting legislation approved in the House.

“We now have 101 co-sponsors for this legislation in the House, which is an important milestone,” said Moreland. “But to reach 218 votes and get H.R. 1076 passed, immediate grassroots action is crucial, especially since House members are returning to their districts soon to campaign for the fall election.”

Other organizations supporting this legislation include: American Council of Snowmobile Association; American Horse Council; American Recreation Coalition; American Trails; Americans for Responsible Recreational Access; Blue Ribbon Coalition; International Mountain Bicycling Association; Motorcycle Industry Council; Motorcycle Riders Foundation; National Ski Areas Association; Specialty Vehicle Industry Council; Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association; and the Washington Road Riders Association.

George
That’s Fatbob and his grandson with George in the center on his ride.

FATBOB HAS A HEAVY HEART– I write this with a heavy heart. My brother in the wind George, has had his bone cancer come back. He is the big guy on the long bike with all the swastikas. Please put him in the Thursday news. Man, it would cheer him up. I know he doesn’t look like a biker on his sled, but he is sick. I didn’t show him the article because I’m on his sled with my grandson. I feel it would either piss him off or hurt him, like I was trying to cop his glory. This was going to be the last bike he built before he died. Bird and I are going to finish it for a Bikernet article, but please put something together about him and the bike.

I wrote the club poem in 1979 when we were working at the nuke plant in Byron, Illinois. Last of the Cowboys. Oh yeah, the springer in Bird’s hand in the pic is not the one on the long bike, but another again Bandit e is getting more fucking radiation as I type. The cancer was in remission and the insurance co quit paying for the drug that put it there which is the drug women took for morning sickness and it fucked up the babies, thaelidamide. I know, I spelled it wrong that’s why I told what it did to women, then you will know what I’m talking about. Damn lame when they have shit to keep you healthy and let you die because of money. I know everyone has a sad song, and sympathy is between shit and syphillis in the dictionary, but it would mean so much to me, Bird, and lift George’s spirits. Here’s a poem for the man:

George a Biker my Brother

Always a biker belonged to a club
Bike trash to some but never a rub

Building his scooters to handle the road
Wearing his colors living the code

Always a stand up never a fool
Jockey shifting his sled before it was cool

Red is his color he runs it with pride
Rode the white line Brothers by side

Road trips the nationals runwith the pack
He was a Hells Henchman and never looked back

10th ANNIVERSARY CUSTOM CHROME EUROPE DEALER SHOW TO HOST EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FOR 2008–CUSTOM Chrome Europe will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its popular Dealer Show at Mainz, Germany, on March 29th and 30th, with the event again hosting AMD’s Official European Championship of Custom Bike Building.

The event will see Custom Chrome putting up a parts and cash prize fund that includes bike freight/expenses contributions of 5.000 Euros each for the first three competitors to travel to compete at the 5th annual Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August.

Always a popular weekend with dealers in Europe, the event combines distributor warehouse show features such as vendor booths, seminars and parts and accessory sales promotions and incentives with what is widely regarded as the highest standard of custom bike design and engineering competition held outside of the United States.

European Championship judging will be by the competitors themselves and a selected VIP jury. The event is a genuinely open Championship, but whilst the majority of competitors are drawn from the custom dealer network in Europe, the unique formula of the weekend has provided a showcase in which leading private builders have been able to come and have their projects judged alongside the market’s professionals on a level playing field.

There will be sub-classes to recognize the specific design and engineering achievements of builders working with Custom Chrome Motorcycle packages and Modified Harley-Davidson frames and engines, but as ever, the primary hallmark of the European Championship will be the increasingly admired ‘FreeStyle’ class in which design and engineering diversity and originality is promoted and rewarded.

Competitors can enter online at the World Championship website (www.amdchampionship.com) where entry forms and full details of the weekend can be found.

For their dealer show Custom Chrome is promising the largest turn-out of leading European and American vendors yet, with Jesse James, Cory Ness, John Reed, Fred Kodlin and Marcus Walz among those slated to be taking part.

The show runs from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday March 29th (the dealer/industry-only day) and Sunday March 30th at its established venue, the atmospheric Phoenixhalle in Mainz, Germany.

TOP 10 VALENTINE’S DON’TS– No. 1 DON’T tell your girlfriend that this has been “one of the best” Valentine’s you’ve ever had. She won’t see that as a compliment.

No. 2 DON’T celebrate your special night by ordering tequila shots, Valentine’s is already poignant enough without inviting Jose Cuervo to the party! Anger, shouting and upchucking that expensive dinner, you paid for, do not a romantic evening make.

No. 3 DON’T try to “avoid the rush.” There’s no such thing as a romantic 4:00 PM dinner (unless you’re over 65).

No. 4 DON’T try to slip how much you spent on her gift into the conversation. She already knows the going rate for cubic zirconia, dude.

No. 5 DON’T Forget to compliment your wife or girlfriend on her Valentine’s ensemble. Compliment her dress, her hair, her shoes, her nails, her makeup, her jewelry, her fingers, her toes, her kneecaps, her kidneys, etc. Just keep complimenting

No. 6 DON’T willingly engage in any conversation during which your wife/girlfriend addresses you by your real name. If she calls you “Honey,” or “Sweetheart,” or even “Papi,” you’re good to go. But any conversation that starts with “Michael, I need to ask you a question,” is a potential minefield.

No. 7 DON’T take your Valentine to an NC-17 movie, even if it’s foreign and/or artsy. On a night like this, the only naked body you should be admiring is hers.

No. 8 DON’T be your usual, too-cool-to-wear-nice-clothes self. No need to buy a new suit, but come on man, maybe tonight isn’t the night for your, “ironic” Dukes of Hazard t-shirt.

No. 9 DON’T order tequila shots. Do you hear me? I’m not kidding about this!

No. 10 DON’T play mood music that’s sexier than you are. If you’re not 100% certain you can provide genuine “sexual healing,” leave Marvin Gaye up on the shelf. Every man’s got to know his limitations.

So, in other words, have a Great Valentine’s Day!

IT’S WHISKEY AND ROSES TIME–Have a terrific time for me. I’m doing shots of whiskey with teaspoons of honey back, then tea with lemon. How’s that sound? I thought so.

I have so much more to report, but fuck it. I’m done. My ears are ringing, my head pounding. She promised her chicken soup would cure me? Watch for the cool Knockout Board tracker next week.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
