New CNN president announces different direction for network, vows to be a ‘beacon’ for journalism

Perhaps no company has had a worse year than CNN, but according to its new president, Chris Licht, the network will be turning away from cable news “extremism” in a bid to become a “beacon” for journalism.

Speaking at the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront presentation at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Licht announced a new direction for the embattled network, who’s multi-million-dollar CNN+ streaming service folded just weeks after it launched, Variety reported.

Licht stated that he saw the mega-merger between Warner Bros., formerly CNN’s parent company, and media giant Discovery, as an opportunity to chart a new path in a sea of cable news competitors, such as Fox News Channel and MSNBC, who Licht sees as partisan.

Ball’s resume is lengthy. He drove the founding and growth of motorcycle rights organization ABATE and was appointed as National Director of the organization. His motorcycling experience has made him a draw for top TV shows including roles as a team member in Monster Garage and as a judge on American Chopper. ABC News interviewed Ball for newsmagazine show 20/20. His racing resume includes being part of four successful motorcycle land speed record attempts and his honors include induction into the Sturgis Museum’s Hall of Fame (2006), Las Vegas Motorcycle Hall of Fame (2016), the Motorcycle Riders Foundation Hall of Fame (2018) and the Cycle Source Man of the Year (2006).

NEWS FROM THE NMA–Motor City should be Renamed Speed Hump City

The city of Detroit recently identified more than 2,000 new speed hump locations. The plan is to install 3,000 of the traffic obstacles by the end of 2022.

That is in addition to the 5,500 humps added throughout the city in 2021. When this street obstacle program started as part of Detroit’s Complete Streets program, the city only had 400 in place. If plans meet expectations, Detroit will have more than 10,500 speed humps to disrupt traffic before 2023.

Should Detroit’s nickname be changed to reflect the new reality?

Speed humps are different than speed bumps and cushions. They are generally 12 to 14 feet long, spanning the width of the road and ranging from three to four inches high. The shapes can be parabolic, circular, or sinusoidal. Speed humps are typically placed on residential streets, mid-block between intersections. One is often deemed insufficient.

A series of two or three speed humps set 350 to 550 feet apart are commonplace to prevent drivers from speeding up between them. Warning signs are typically displayed ahead of the road hazard. Even with the signs, the lower visibility conditions of bad weather, or dawn/dusk can cause some very unpleasant surprises for drivers on speed hump streets.

Detroit’s public works department uses the following criteria for the placement of speed humps:

• Local residential streets with speed limits of 25 mph or less
• Nearby schools and parks
• Streets with a record of speeding and traffic accidents
• Streets with cut-throughs to or from arterial roads
• Areas with block housing density
• Areas with numbers of children present
• Resident support on the block and a valid request made to the city

While some neighbors might like the speed humps, not all do. Detroit resident Pamela Foster exclaimed, “It’s too many of them…they’re putting them in spots that we don’t need.” Often the residents reconsider after the humps have been in place for a while and have to be dealt with daily. Be careful what you wish for.

It will be interesting watching for reactions by Detroit commuters as the hump count continues to grow.

Riveter Chapter of the AMCA welcomes Road Guardians/Accident Scene Management as a Chix on 66 ride sponsor. As a result of this sponsorship, Chix on 66 will be able to provide live entertainment for an event taking place during the ride on Sunday, June 12, in Pontiac, Illinois.

Chix on 66 is a cross-country ride being held June 11-25, comprising 40 women that will follow the entirety of Route 66 from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, adhering to the original alignment to the extent possible.

For every day of the two-week, 2,500-mile journey, the group will begin and end together, but each woman can make the journey into what she wants it to be. The route will cover anywhere from 100 to 300 miles per day, with most days around 200 miles, allowing for an easy pace and ample time to stop for photos of the iconic points of interest along the Mother Road.

MSF ANNOUNCES ADV RIDERCOURSE— The Motorcycle Safety Foundation will help adventure and dual-purpose riders looking to learn fundamental off-road skills through its newest offering, the AdventureBike RiderCourse (ADVRC).

The course features 12 exercises and an adventure prep discussion that will help riders better understand and control their motorcycle so that they can gain off-road riding confidence and be ready to take on bigger adventure challenges, more advanced training, and participate in more tours, events, and rides.

“Adventure and dual-purpose motorcycles open a whole new world of riding possibilities,” notes Erik Pritchard, president and CEO of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. “Sales in this category have increased more than 46% since 2019. Creating a course to help those new, or a bit rusty, to riding off-road is a need we are excited to meet.”

“The AdventureBike RiderCourse will make core off-road skill building available nationwide and help these riders explore the capabilities of their motorcycles,” adds Corey Eastman, director of rider education expansion. “We hope riders take this knowledge and go on to discover thousands of ADV riding opportunities.”

In fact, more than 100 MSF coaches are working to become certified to teach the AdventureBike RiderCourse by year’s end. The msf-usa.org site will be updated regularly as new training sites come online.The MSF AdventureBike RiderCourse is currently available in 12 states through various private- and MSF-run training sites, and under the Adventure Touring Rider Course name through participating Harley-Davidson Riding Academy locations.

All instruction is done on an MSF-recognized riding range under the guidance of MSF-certified ADVRC rider coaches. As availability of the course spreads nationwide, it will be easier than ever for riders to gain core off-road skills.

WHEELS THROUGH TIME MUSEUM OPENING–Dale’s Wheels Through Time is open for the 2022 season, and we can’t wait to see you! The museum’s hours are Thursday through Monday, 10AM to 5PM, and closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

When you visit this year, one of the first new things you’ll see is the “Kennybuilt 9-Wheel Harley Rig.” A completely custom-built machine, it pays homage to the familiar Harley-Davidson Factory Semis.

Many of you have probably already seen the video where we took the Miller Light plane out of the museum, fired it for the first time in museum history, and Matt taxied it through the parking lot. If you haven’t seen it, be sure to check it out on our YouTube page. After filming, we placed the plane into an all-new exhibit that displays it in a way that pays honor to its history and purpose. SEMA ACTION NETWORK NEWS–Court Allows Lawsuit Protecting Off-Roading at Oceano Dunes to be Heard

A San Luis Obispo County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of the nonprofit organization Friends of Oceano Dunes, allowing a “quiet title” lawsuit against the California Coastal Commission (CCC), California State Parks, and other government groups to move forward. The suit contends that off-roading and camping access to Oceano Dunes is protected by an “implied-by-law dedication” since off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts and campers recreated on the land for decades before the government entities acquired the properties.

A quiet title lawsuit is usually brought against a private landowner in a dispute over who owns the land. Friends of Oceano Dunes, however, is not disputing who owns the land but rather that the land was specifically designated for use for beach driving and camping. The case is set for trial in March 2023.

Fifteen women ready for 2022 BUILD. TRAIN. RACE. opening round this weekend at Virginia International Raceway.

Milwaukee, WI (Tuesday, May 17, 2022) – Women racers and builders are reaching new heights in road racing in 2022, where the groundbreaking Royal Enfield Build. Train. Race. (BTR) program is getting ready to ignite the biggest season yet. Fifteen women from across the country from different age groups and varied backgrounds will come together for the six-round exhibition series, starting this weekend, May 20-22, as part of the MotoAmerica venue at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia.

“This is a landmark year for Build. Train. Race.,” said Breeann Poland, Marketing and Communications Lead – Royal Enfield Americas. “Last year was incredible; we received such support from fans and the industry. And this year, everything is twice the size—our field of riders, our schedule and our presence in the MotoAmerica paddock. We’re really going to wow people with a full grid of riders from all levels of experience. Among our new and returning riders, we can already see that the level of competition has come up. These ladies are going to put on a great show this season.”

From the excruciating process of handpicking participants over the winter, including new and returning racers, the BTR crew assisted each woman in the “Build” phase of the program. Generous sponsorship comes from Parts Unlimited, S&S Cycle, Harris Performance, Dunlop, Maxima Racing Oils, BOXO USA, Öhlins USA Suspension and Arai Helmets.

Each of the 15 participants received a Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 motorcycle that they spent three months designing and building. The “Train” phase included a recent test session at Barber Motorsports Park with Sportbike Track Time, where the BTR Road Race women all got on the track together for the first time.

With some guidance and mentorship from Melissa Paris, racers were able to dial in their Continental GT 650 motorcycles, and the entire field demonstrated that they are ready to race.

“It was so nice to get to meet all of my new teammates and see the returning ladies, who have become close friends of mine,” said returning rider Trisha Dahl (31, Minneapolis, Minnesota). “I’m proud of how fast I’ve progressed, but this new crop of ladies has far more experience, and it shows. Our first race is coming fast, and competition will be fierce, but we’re all coming together as a team to represent Royal Enfield North America, and it will be a beautiful sight when we all line up on that grid for the first time this season.”

For first-time participants such as Jessica Martin (38, Savannah, Georgia), the upcoming VIR race is fast arriving. “The opening round seemed so far away, now it’s here and I’m overcome with emotions,” said Martin. “The Build and Train portions were very encouraging and confidence inspiring. You could say I believe in me more than I ever have. The camaraderie among the team is what stands out most. We are here to help each other reach our goals, while also competing. It’s very amazing, intense and enlightening. And now, it’s go time!”

Above all else, the Build. Train. Race. paddock represents an atmosphere of support and encouragement for women racers, nurturing talent and inspiring both new and veteran riders to get out on the track. In a hotbed of national-level competition, the inviting nature of BTR continues to attract the attention of fans, industry and sponsors to the unique concept, now in its second year within the MotoAmerica FIM North American Road Race Championship.

Red Cross to Install Free Smoke Alarms in Baldwin Park–
As Part of National Effort to End Home Fires

LOS ANGELES, May 12, 2022 — On Saturday May 14, the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region will install free smoke alarms for Baldwin Park residents. This effort is part of a national Red Cross initiative called Sound the Alarm with the goal to install 50,000 free smoke alarms in more than 50 at-risk communities across the country this May. Baldwin Park was chosen based on the number of fire incidents in the community over the past three years. The presence of a working smoke alarm in a home reduces the risk of dying in a fire by 50%.

Sound the Alarm kickoff with remarks and volunteer training, followed by smoke alarm installations at area homes where volunteer teams will also discuss home fire safety with families.

“Our goal is to save lives,” said Joanne Nowlin, CEO for the Red Cross Los Angeles. “That’s why we want to make sure everyone has working smoke alarms, which can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half.”

In 2022 alone, Red Cross LA has supported more than 670 people following 140 home fires. Most recently, the Red Cross responded to an apartment fire in East Los Angeles during Mother’s Day weekend. The volunteers helped more than 17 people displaced by opening an emergency shelter as well as providing food, water and other services as they begin the recovery process.

“Most people don’t realize they only have two minutes to escape a home fire — and that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years,” Nowlin said. “Taking action with this knowledge can be the difference between survival and tragedy.”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED— Event volunteers are needed to install smoke alarms and share fire safety information with families during May. Register at SoundTheAlarm.org to join a rewarding day of giving back in Inglewood on May 20 and in Long Beach or Montebello on May 21. No prior experience is needed — training will be provided. You can also make a financial donation to the Red Cross to help people prepare for, respond to and recover from home fires.

LOS ANGELES JOINS NATIONAL SOUND THE ALARM EFFORT This Sound the Alarm event is part of a national Red Cross initiative in May to install 50,000 free smoke alarms with partners in more than 50 at-risk communities across the country. Sound the Alarm events are a critical part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 1, 275 lives since launching in October 2014. As part of the campaign in Los Angeles, Red Cross LA volunteers and local partners have installed more than 52,000 free smoke alarms and made more than 17,600 households safer.

The Original Easyriders Magazine events are back this summer with the Original Easyriders Rodeos! Since 1987, Easyriders Events has produced indoor and outdoor motorcycle events throughout the country with attendance reaching as high as 50,000.

We are currently searching for new sponsors to host Easyriders Motorcycle Rodeo’s annual events. The event would include competitors bringing custom-built motorcycles to compete for $10,000 in prize money in the grandstand area. Toxophilite “a devotee of archery” is based on the term Toxophilus “bow-lover,” which Roger Ascham coined for his book of the same name published in 1545. Toxophilus is based on Ancient Greek tóxon “bow” and phílos “loving, dear,” the latter of which we learned about from the recent Word of the Day philtrum.

If you were wondering whether tóxon is related to the English word toxic, you have good instincts! Bikers Inside the Beltway

Yesterday, bikers from across the country arrived on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to meet with lawmakers and staff to discuss important motorcycling issues.

Over 200 congressional offices from Alaska to Georgia met face to face with motorcycle advocates on topics like profiling, autonomous vehicles, ethanol and transportation funding. Both in the Senate and House of Representatives bikers answered questions about our priorities and encouraged lawmakers to defend our freedoms.

Our work in D.C. would be impossible without the time and effort MRF members expend coming to our nation’s capital. Thank you to all that made the trip, and truly make the MRF the voice of the street rider in Washington D.C.!

I am working on a new style old school basket that uses a newer chain drive style clutch pack, and the basket will be a 68 tooth with a 43 tooth front pulley and be a little smaller in diameter.

This will also use the 138-tooth belt so there is more adjustment for the tin primary customers.

High winds from May 12 storm caused damage statewide

SIOUX FALLS, SD – After severe weather, such as the windstorm that roared across South Dakota on May 12, workers and others involved in storm cleanup may face hazards related to falls, downed power lines and sharp debris as they conduct recovery and cleanup operations.

Employers and workers should also be aware of heat illness and hazards from equipment used during response/recovery operations, such as chain saws.

“The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reminds workers and employers to pause and evaluate hazards, safety procedures and the need for appropriate personal protective equipment during response and recovery operations,” said OSHA Area Director Sheila Stanley in Sioux Falls. “Hazards can be minimized with safe work practices, training and proper planning.”

• Evaluating work areas for hazards.

• Wearing proper clothing and use personal protective equipment.
• Assuming all power lines are live.

This letter may be a little late in coming, but the Long Road is still 2 months to the day away and hopefully many of you have a flexible schedule or an easy going boss.

The 14th edition of the Long Road will continue to be a two night/stop ride. The feedback from the two-night format last year was all great. We picked great places to visit and do a short ride or two before we pack our gear and move on. This also gives breakdowns a chance to play catch-up. Of course, we’ll continue the “ Gypsy” style ride where we ride with as many or few others as we see fit.

The registration this year is $48. which includes a t-shirt, two nights use of the Planet Chopper roadhouse in Woodlawn, Virginia, beverages at The Rebel Spirit custom motorcycle shop in Thomasville, NC on Saturday, July 23rd and a catered meal when we return to Planet Chopper that evening.

Note: there is trailer parking available at Planet Chopper, call John Devonshire at 276-233-6974 to make arrangements.

For this years’ Long Road, there is a “Pre-Party” where those who are available and want to hang out for a couple of extra days. We will meet Friday July 15th at Soo Locks Campground located at 1001 E Portage Ave, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

An Old Golfer was hitting his ball from near a water hazard and his club fell into the water.

When he cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, “Why are you sad?”

The golfer replied that his club had fallen into the water and he needed the club to have a chance to win the tournament and supplement his meager pension.

The Lord went down into the water and reappeared with a solid gold club.

“Is this your club?” the Lord asked.

The golfer replied, “No.”

The Lord again went down and came up with a sterling silver club.

“Is this your club?” the Lord asked.

Again, the golfer replied, “No.”

The Lord went down again and came up with an old iron club.
“Is this your club?” the Lord asked.

The golfer replied, “Yes Lord, that’s it!”

The Lord was pleased with the golfer’s honesty and gave him all three clubs to keep,
and the golfer won his tournament and went home happy.

Sometime later, the golfer was walking with his wife along the water hazard, and she fell into the lake.

When he cried out, the Lord again appeared and asked him,
“Now Why are you sad?”

“Oh, Lord, my wife has fallen into the water!”

The Lord went into the water and reappeared with Kate Upton.
“Is this your woman?” the Lord asked.

“Yes,” cried the golfer.
The Lord was furious. “You lied! That is an untruth!”

The California legislature is considering a bill that would create a pilot program allowing six cities to issue exhaust noise tickets using noise detection cameras. These cameras work similarly to red light and speed cameras and are being tested in other cities around the country. Contrary to some media reports, the bill has not passed the legislature. As of this writing, it awaits consideration on the Senate floor and must then still pass the Assembly before moving to Gov. Gavin Newsom for final approval or veto.

More importantly, the bill does not change California’s existing exhaust noise laws, which is based on SEMA’s model bill. The law limits cars and trucks to 95-decibels of exhaust noise when tested using an objective SAE International procedure. Motorists that receive a ticket would still have the ability to have their vehicle tested by the Referee to determine compliance. A court may then use the test result to dismiss the ticket.

After exiting and disappointing dealers and bike owners, now Sales figures for end of Financial Year March 2022 shows H-D is again Number One in Sales of Top-End Motorcycles in India – motorcycles having engine capacity above 1000cc.

Unlike last time, when some entry-level models such as Street 750, Iron 883, and Forty-Eight were assembled locally – all of the models are fully-imported from overseas.

Another surprise was – highest selling models were not these entry-level models as in the past. This time 1000cc+ models clocked a big majority of sales.

Out of Total Sales of 601, the number of 1000cc plus models sold was 531 units – mostly of the new Pan America 1250 adventure tourer and Sportster S.

Note: In India, financial year runs from April 2021 to March 2022. Let’s see if petrol and commodity prices change anything in the Q1 and Q2 of FY-2023.

Harley-Davidson’s updated Serial 1 e-bikes will feature Google Cloud connectivity
Most of the major changes are under the surface

Serial 1, the electric bike company spun out of Harley-Davidson, launched its second-generation lineup of premium e-bikes — but the biggest changes will be coming to the company’s app.

The updated bikes will come with a host of new software features provided by Serial 1’s new partnership with Google Cloud. The company says that Google Cloud has selected Serial 1 as its new “strategic eMobility partner,” meaning the e-bike maker will be among the first to integrate Google’s software products into its vehicles.

The software-enabled e-bikes will allow owners to track their trips, collect data, and “significantly improve safety and security,” Serial 1 says. It reflects a trend in the e-bike industry to install bikes with cloud-connected software as an additional selling point.

The centerpiece of the new partnership will be the Serial 1 app, in which owners can see turn-by-turn navigation, collect ride data, and control security features on their bike. Serial 1 is promising more high-tech features to come thanks to the company’s “access to Google Cloud analytics and business intelligence and integration with Google Cloud AI functionality.”

Google Cloud will also ensure a stronger connection between the bike and the user’s smartphone. Most e-bikes use Bluetooth to connect to a smartphone app, but Serial 1’s bikes will use cellular and GPS technology, in addition to Bluetooth, to ensure owners can connect to their bikes even when they are not in their line of sight.

Just a quick refresher: Serial 1 is a standalone electric bike company that spun out from Harley-Davidson in October 2020. Its current lineup includes four bikes, ranging in price from $3,399 to $4,999. The brand names are Mosh/Cty, a city bike, and the commuter Rush/Cty, which comes in three variants (regular, Step-Thru, and Speed). Each comes with a mid-drive motor capable of generating 250W of continuous power and hitting top speeds of 20mph — except for the Rush/Cty Speed, which can go 28mph.

The powertrains will be the same in the second-generation bikes. Most of the major changes are under the surface. These include improved security features, such as flashing lights, disabled pedal-assist functionality, and real-time locations.

The Serial 1 app will integrate with Google Maps to provide better navigation, for example, by prioritizing routes with bike lanes. Serial 1’s simplified digital displays are supplied by Brose, a German company that also makes the bike’s powertrain, so users will likely have to mount their smartphones on the handlebars to benefit from these types of features.

The app will also feature a “virtual garage” in which owners can name, track, and digitally manage their e-bikes. This will include a new dashboard for owners to monitor their bike’s ride data, including speed, distance, range, power output (both for the rider and the battery), efficiency, and state-of-charge, among other metrics. Serial 1 owners can record their rides to learn more about their performance and progress. And the app will provide automatic service updates when their bikes are in need of a tune-up.

The physical look and controls for the second-generation bikes will remain largely the same. I loved the bikes when I got to test them out last year. The same team that developed the batteries for Harley-Davidson electric LiveWire motorcycles also developed batteries for Serial 1. The integrated batteries are mounted very low on the frame, which helps with the mass centralization and improved handling.

With this new update, it’s clear Serial 1 is taking aim at major manufacturers like Giant, Trek, and Specialized, which sell premium e-bikes for high-end customers. Specialized, in particular, has been touting the connected software in its Turbo lineup. And like Harley-Davidson, the company just announced that it was spinning out its own brand called Globe that will exclusively focus on utility e-bikes.

ASK A TROOPER: “Motorcycle Riding Dog”

Question: Can someone with a motorcycle permit have their small dog riding on the motorcycle or would that be considered a passenger? We have already purchased a helmet and leather jacket for this lucky pup! Thank you for your response.

Answer: First of all, where will this dog be seated and how? I see less issues if you are talking about a motorcycle side car or a motorcycle trailer equipped with a kennel. But if you are talking about on the actual motorcycle with you, I don’t think this would be very safe for you or your pet.

If you are going to carry a passenger, there are a few key items to keep in mind:

Equip and Adjust Your Motorcycle:

• A passenger seat and footrests are required by law.
• Adjust tire pressure and suspension settings for the additional weight. (Do not exceed weight limitations specified in the owner’s manual.)
• Readjust mirrors.

Passenger Preparation:

• Provide protective riding gear: eye protection, a DOT-approved helmet, boots, gloves, long riding pants and a high-visibility motorcycle jacket.
• Passengers under age 18 are required by law to wear a DOT-approved helmet.
• Small children are required by law to be able to reach both footrests with their feet while sitting on the passenger seat.

Getting On and Off the Motorcycle:

• Start the engine before the passenger gets on.
• Squeeze the front brake while the passenger gets on or off the bike.
• Passengers should get off the bike before the operator.

Passenger Safety Tips:

• Hold operator’s waist or hips, or motorcycle’s passenger hand-holds.
• Keep feet on footrests at all times, including while stopped.
• Keep hands and feet away from hot or moving parts.
• When turning, look over the operator’s shoulder in the direction of the turn.
• Avoid turning around or making sudden moves that might affect operation.
• If crossing an obstacle, rise off the seat keeping your feet on the foot pegs with knees slightly bent and allow legs to absorb the shock upon impact.

Operator Safety Tips:

• A passenger will affect handling due to extra weight and independent motion.
• Braking sooner with greater pressure may be necessary.
• Use extra caution in a corner.
• Allow more time and space for passing.
• Be ready to counter the effects of wind.
• Avoid extreme speeds and dramatic lean angles.

According to the data shared by SIAM, Harley sold 601 motorcycles in FY-2022, as compared to only 206 Harley-Davidson motorcycles sold during FY-2021. It’s a 37 per cent growth in sales as compared to last year.

Hero MotoCorp took over Harley’s distribution in India in October 2020 including motorcycles, accessories, merchandise and more. The company is currently operating about 13 dealerships and 10 authorised service centres across the country.

Harley-Davidson has witnessed a resurgence in its sales in India as the brand managed to regain the number one spot in the high-end motorcycle segment in the country. The company, which announced its exit and subsequent re-entry into the Indian market in 2020, has been on a road to a revival with partner Hero MotoCorp.

According to the data shared by SIAM, Harley sold 601 motorcycles in FY-2022, of which 531 units were sold in the 1,000 cc and above two-wheeler segment. The company witnessed a 37 per cent growth year-on-year. In comparison, only 206 Harley-Davidson motorcycles were sold during FY-2021.

When compared to other premium motorcycle brands, Harley was substantially ahead with Triumph Motorcycles India selling 336 units, Kawasaki selling 283 units, Suzuki selling 233 and Honda selling 71 units in the 1,000 cc and above motorcycle segment.

The majority of the iconic American brand’s sales have been driven by its new launches, the Pan America 1250 adventure tourer and the Sportster S cruiser and mark a revolution, both in terms of a platform and segment for the manufacturer.

It’s also noteworthy that a bulk of Harley’s previous sales in India were driven by entry-level offerings like the Street 750, Iron 883 and the Forty-Eight, which were locally assembled. While the latter models are still on sale, they are now wholly imported much like the rest of the range comprising the Pan America 1250, Sportster S, Fab Bob, Fat Boy, Heritage Classic, Road King, Road Glide and Street Glide.

The company is now gearing up to introduce the Harley-Davidson Nightster S later this year.

The first voice of a newborn baby has deep mental impact on a mother, while hearing an authoritative voice of a policeman when you are repeatedly getting pulled over at checkpoints for riding on a ‘cool’ chopper may bring a different response.

Long-time pet owners will vouch that their dogs or cats hear and respond to their voice, maybe even specific words. I had a cat who recognised his name when called. He also knew and loved the word ‘chicken’ among other words. Cats and dogs also have a strong sense of hearing, while most people only ‘hear’ (punny) about their sense of smell (or the smell of what the cat left behind in your shoe).

The music company HMV stands for the words ‘His Master’s Voice’. The HMV official logo illustrates a painting titled ‘His Master’s Voice’ by Francis Barraud of ‘Nipper’ listening to a Phonograph cylinder, which was bought by the Gramophone Company in 1899. It shows a dog looking at the gramophone, supposedly playing the recorded voice of his master, hoping his master will appear soon.

After a performance at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry (Oct. 2, 1954), Elvis was allegedly told by an Opry manager that he was better off with his day job as a truck driver because he would never make it as a singer. Two weeks later he appeared on Louisiana Hayride & signed on for 52 Saturday night appearances on the radio show, thus launching his legendary career.)

1. ‘Lookin’ Out My Back Door’ is not about drugs at all.

This song appeared in the album: Cosmo’s Factory.

The intriguing name of the album had trippy lyrics such as –

“Won’t you take a ride on the flyin’ spoon? Dood-n-doo-doo
Wonderous apparition provided by magician
Doo, doo, doo, lookin’ out my back door”

The song came up again in the trippy iconic movie ‘The Big Lebowski’ (1998) where ‘The Dude’ is looking through his rearview mirror as the song is playing. A movie by incredibly talented writer-director duo Coen Brothers.

All this will make any parent grab and destroy that CD (unless they are really hardcore Rock fans and look up stuff).

Well, the song is what John wrote when he came home to his 3-year old son.

In interviews and in ‘Bad Moon Rising: The Unauthorized History of Creedence Clearwater’, John Fogerty is quoted as saying the song was actually written for his then three-year-old son, Josh. He has also said, the reference to the parade passing by the door was inspired by the Dr. Seuss story, ‘And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street’.

2. Another hit song from this wonderful album was ‘Run Through The Jungle’

No Sir, it is not about Vietnam War.

In a TV interview that was also mentioned in Rolling Stone magazine in Jan-2016, the master-songwriter said:

“I’ve seen it written that ‘Run Through the Jungle’ is about Vietnam, but that’s not true. I was speaking about the landscape in America. I had been thinking about the idea ever since 1966, when Charles Whitman had gone on a rampage, killing sixteen and wounding thirty-two others, shooting from the observation tower at the University of Texas. The song is really about gun control.”

That said, there is his unique take about such a control:

“Now, I’m a hunter. And I’m intrigued, even fascinated, by weaponry through the ages. But you don’t take a machine gun to go deer hunting,” he said. “There’s got to be some sort of lid on this thing.”

(since 9/11 & Snowden and diminished rights of citizens) “I think it is important that our citizenry is armed. I believe this acts as a deterrent – whoa! Deterrent? Against what? Let’s just say that the fact that there are millions of armed people ready to defend their homes probably acts as a huge roadblock against those who would try to seize the country for their own ends.”

Fogerty also wrote about this song in his 2015 autobiography, ‘Fortunate Son: My Life, My Music’, echoing much of the same, saying he was a hunter that favored gun control.

3. Well, does that overload your heart & mind and wanna listen to the trippy song about Seuss’s characters with some whisky & women?

Well, here is another gem from this very album that promises a better stress-buster and true freedom. Freedom to ride, enjoy, explore, party, make friends, see the unseen beauty all around.

The name of the song is ‘Up Around the Bend’. Yes! It is about riding your motorcycle with the wind blowing, a smile for company.

John Fogerty explains, “This was inspired by riding my motorcycle. I just remember riding along, and the title phrase came to me. Just the feeling of going. Movement.”

Well, movement is definitely important. Apart from physical, metal exercises, make sure to exercise your motorcycle engine, gears, throttle & roll those wheels. While a laid-back man may joke about moving parts causing more wear and tear, a biker knows by experience that a human body & mind regenerates only through exercise, not by stagnation – especially not of ‘spirit’.

And of course, the biker takes enough care to service & repair his/her motorcycle. Bikers personify their bikes, treat them like a person, with dignity & respect! They give their bikes a name. Some may advice you that, abuse of your machine will throwback bad surprises on some faraway highway. It may also be a metaphor for your life & health!

Life has it’s ups and downs, just like riding a big V-Twin on winding mountain roads or dirt tracks in small detours. You also get to ride smooth and fast on many highways and outside big cities.

Depending on all the mental / physical luggage, you may or may not reach your full-engine-capacity / efficiency. One man’s life though is not as similar as their friend or neighbour’s motorcycle of the same make & model.

So, there would be some rocking and some rolling & tumbling – depending on the path you choose to ride on. But you gotta gotta ‘Ride On’ !

CHARLES, Mo. – May 13, 2022 – Yesterday, national nonprofits Wreaths Across America (WAA) and the Young Marines are proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two organizations. The signing is to build a stronger awareness for each group’s common missions while supporting educational events throughout the nation.

These events will help teach lessons of character and patriotism to the next generation. WAA’s Director of Military and Veteran Outreach, Joseph Reagan, and Young Marines National Executive Director Col. William Davis signed the MOU live as part of the Young Marines Adult Leadership Conference held in St. Charles, Missouri.

The MOU between the two groups outlines key agreements that establish a framework for cooperation between WAA and the Young Marines. The interviews will highlight youth participants’ academic achievement, community service, good citizenship, and other attributes.

Young Marines has more than 238 units including thousands of youth members, most of whom have been placing veterans’ wreaths throughout the country for many years. The MOU will only heighten awareness of this task of respect and honor.

The Young Marines is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, aged eight through high school graduation. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members and focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork, and self-discipline, so its members can live and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

About Wreaths Across America: Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. The organization’s mission – Remember, Honor, and Teach – is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington, as well as at thousands of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond.
