Ed Krawiec defeated teammate Andrew Hines in an all-Harley Pro Stock Motorcycle final at the 34th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. Krawiec and Hines also qualified 1-2 for the event, and posted the quickest times in three of four qualifying sessions. Final elimination rounds were delayed until Monday due to extended periods of rain on Sunday. “Even with the rain delay, things could not have gone much better for the Screamin’ Eagle team this weekend,” said Krawiec, who won the final round for the 23rd time in his career. “We’ve got great V-Rod race bikes now. US Defenders, Colorado Confederation of Clubs, and Coalition of Independent Riders (COIR) organized the event, and behind it all was Tiger Chandler. Although many women are bikers, if you say the word “biker” to almost any American, the picture which pops into their head will be that of a bearded and tattooed man in dusty leathers and ragged denim, leaning against a chrome-gleaming status symbol of a bike. On Saturday, movie buffs and motorcyclists converged on the community of Ranchos de Taos in northern New Mexico — where much of the film Easy Rider was shot — to launch “Dennis Hopper Day.” Several dozen motorcyclists staged a rally and rode through some of the places made famous in the film. The town of Taos is now known for its diverse Hispanic and Native American culture, as well as for skiing and local art. Saturday would have been Dennis Hopper’s 78th birthday; he lived in Taos for years and is buried there. Read more
