BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS FLASH – S&S 50TH BEGINS!

Oldgirls

Hey,

Here’s another link to the code of the west from John Jakes book California Gold. I read this book while researching my second book Outlaw Justice. There’s a couple of sidebars in this book of California History and one includes the following quote: In reading biographies of Californians, I found some recurring themes: restlessness rather than rootedness, innovation instead of tradition, freedom replacing responsibility?I also found an obsession with bigness. —Carol Dunlap, California People.

Bennet bike
Bennett’s S&S bike with our Bonneville number.

Sounds like part of the Biker Code to me. This weekend 50 builders, with S&S powered scooters under their arms are headed to Viola, Wisconsin to show their shit to the S&S crew. Every American Motorcycle magazine journalist from Australia to England will be on hand to capture images of the various bikes. Michael Lichter and Howard Kelly will produce a book based on these 50 customs. Hell, we attended a party last weekend at Bennett’s Performance in Long Beach to see the S&S Twin Cam Bennett’s Bonneville biker unveiled. You see it first here on Bikernet. Let’s hit the news, then I’ll tell you about the ride to J&P.

SCREAMIN? EAGLE RIDERS GO ROUNDS AT ENGLISHTOWN–Hines Advances to Semi-Finals, Maintains Pro Stock Motorcycle Points Lead.

ENGLISHTOWN, NJ (June 22, 2008) ? Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines won twice before bowing out in the semi-final round of NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations at the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. Hines, riding a Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycle, maintained his hold on the Pro Stock Motorcycle season points lead.

The death of Top Fuel driver Scott Kalitta in a racing accident on Saturday left the Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team in a somber mood on Sunday.

?It?s very difficult to come to the track and go back to work after a tragic accident like this,? said Screamin? Eagle Racing Manager Anne Paluso. ?Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kalitta family and that racing organization.?

Hines qualified fifth for the SuperNationals with a 6.973-second run. His Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines teammate, Eddie Krawiec, qualified his V-Rod ninth with a 6.997 pass. Chris Rivas lead all qualifiers with a 6.923 run.

Hines defeated Mike Barry on the MB Precision Machining Buell in the first round Sunday, and cut a perfect starting light in a round-two win over Rush Racing Products Buell rider Angelle Sampey to advance to the semi-final round. Krawiec defeated Matt Guidera on the Rocklin Motorsports Buell in the first round, but lost to Chris Rivas in round two. In the semi-final round Rivas laid down a 7.007-second pass to defeat the 7.116 run of Hines. In the final round, Rivas lost on a red-light start to Chip Ellis on the Schumacher Electric Suzuki. It was the first event win for Ellis since 2005.

BIKERNET BONNEVILLE BOOK ARRIVES– Just got my copy of the Bonneville book in the mail last night. Damn! That’s a fine book!

Especially the part about the history of the salt…he he. I’m gonna order copies today to send to my gearhead relatives. The book was well-written and the step-by-step process to get from raw metal to raw salt was really good. Nothing heard from Oakland PD, yet about their noise study. I’m going to wait a few more days and give them a call, to at least see if they received the letter, and it got to the top cop.

Ride Safe!

COOLBETH GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE AT MARYSVILLE GRAND NATIONAL—Harley-Davidson Screamin? Eagle Factory Rider Takes Second Win of Season

MARYSVILLE, TENN (June 21, 2008) ? Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth remains undefeated on the 2008 AMA Grand National Twins series, as the two-time defending Grand National Twins champion took the win on the Mountain Raceway Park half-mile. It was the 16th career Grand National victory for Coolbeth, who rode a Harley-Davidson XR-750 motorcycle.

Blue Springs Harley-Davidson/Screamin? Eagle rider Jared Mees, who was fast qualifier for the race, crashed hard in the first turn at the start of the 25-lap main, bringing out a red flag that stopped the action. Mees eventually remounted, but Reiman’s Harley-Davidson/RCS Racing rider Sammy Sweet, who was collected in the crash, was unable to continue.

On the restart Moroney’s Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle rider Bryan Smith and Latus Harley-Davidson/Screamin? Eagle rider Joe Kopp lead into the first turn, but Coolbeth split them with a great drive out of the corner and had the lead when the pack crossed the line to count the first lap. Coolbeth and Kopp pulled away, leaving behind a fight for third that involved Smith, American Suzuki rider Jake Johnson, Glassman/LZ Racing rider Sammy Halbert and Chris Carr. The veteran Carr held down third place from lap 4 through lap 21, but Halbert made a pass for the position on lap 22. Two laps later Smith dropped Carr to fifth. Halbert held on to third at the finish to take the first Grand National first podium spot of his career. Kopp stayed in touch with Coolbeth, but the Michigan rider was able to maintain a cushion and finished 1.06 seconds ahead of Kopp at the finish.

After two races, Coolbeth leads the 2008 AMA Grand National Twins series with 46 points. Smith is second with 34 points, followed by Kopp and Carr, who are tied with 28 points. The next stop on the 2008 AMA Grand National Twins Championship schedule is June 27 at Bedford Speedway in Bedford, Pa. The Screamin’ Eagle Flat Track team is sponsored by Matco Tools.A recent study conducted by Harvard University found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year.

FLORIDA BIKER LAW TAKES EFFECT ON JULY 1–Starting July 1, Keys motorcyclists will have to travel up to Homestead to take the nearest three-day mandatory drivers’ course.

It’s part of a state law taking effect that will require all new bikers to graduate from a safety class.

Anyone, regardless of age, who doesn’t have a full motorcycle endorsement on his or her license, including the knowledge and road-skills test, will get a ticket if police catch them on a motorcycle or moped with engines larger than 49 cc.

Current law only requires bikers under age 21 to take the three-day course. Riders older than 21 only have to take a written exam and a short driving test.

Under the new law, potential motorcyclists will still have the written skills test but it will be administered at the three-day Motorcycle Safety Foundation course.

Bikers who’ve already received their motorcycle endorsements will be grandfathered in and exempt from taking the safety course.

?People will get pulled over and they will be asked to get endorsements and have to drive more than 120 miles to get them,? said Jiri Klapil, owner of the JK Motor Shop in Key West. ?That’s ridiculous.?

?These are changes the state is making,? said Denise Wilcox, supervisor of the drivers’ license office in Key West’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. ?We weren’t really excited about it either.?

Instructor Gene Gracey will host his last skills tests at the First Baptist Church on Big Pine Key June 25, according to Key West Yamaha manager Howard Bush. The Key West DMV administers the written exam, but will stop July 1.

?It’s a nightmare,? Bush said. ?$250 [for the course], plus a three-day hotel stay out of one’s own pocket to take a mandatory motorcycle course … and it’s going to make people jobless. This is going to seriously hurt sales across the state.?

?I don’t think that directly it will affect me that much,? Honda Key West owner Victor Mills said. ?My sales have been more directly linked to scooters than motorcycles.?

Many scooters have engines smaller than 50 cc. Mills, who owns the shop on Southard Street, also mentioned the fact that because it’s a three-day course, riders will have to take off work. He also says that once the state statute is implemented, the state won’t abide by its own laws.

Under current law, people taking the safety class could get a temporary permit before taking the three-day course. Come July 1, those temporary permits will be useless.

The course supplies its own motorcycles and tackles maneuvering, braking, proper apparel, obstacle avoidance, traffic strategies and responsibility.

You can reach the Homestead diver’s school at (305) 271-4311.

SUCKER PUNCH SALLY’S TO HOST BIKE GIVEAWAY AT LEGENDARY BUFFALO CHIP– STURGIS, S.D. –June 18, 2008– Sucker Punch Sally’s (SPS) today announced it will launch two new products during Sturgis Bike Week 2008. The first is Sucker Punch Shine, which is a refined version of the traditional classic moonshine that still packs a punch at 120 proof. The second is Original Octane, a refreshing orange cream tasting energy drink. SPS has decided to celebrate this launch with a bike giveaway at the legendary Buffalo Chip this year in Sturgis.

Original Octane is the newest addition to SPS’s expanding product line, and everything from its packaging to its classic orange cream flavor exudes SPS’s old-school style that is meant to be mixed with the first of their alcoholic beverages, Sucker Punch Shine. And in true SPS fashion, the SPS crew did what they do best – built a Sucker Punch motorcycle in honor of their newest business venture. The motorcycle is Sucker Punch Sally’s traditional with Original Octane/SPS Shine branding and is true to SPS’s stripped-down, no-nonsense style.

“Building custom motorcycles and the deadlines we face leaves us no stranger to energy drinks.” Said SPS President Christian Clayton. “After we took over the distillery and developed the SPS Shine we wanted a mixer, a great tasting energy drink was the answer. However, anyone who has tasted all the energy drinks out there knows “great tasting” and “energy drink” don’t really go hand in hand. So we decided to formulate our own – and then we built a bike to go along with it.”

Sturgis attendees can register for a chance to win the SPS custom from Aug. 4 to Aug. 7, 2008, at SPS’s trailer, located at the infield at the Buffalo Chip. The SPS crew will also be handing out samples of Original Octane at their trailer throughout bike week. The Original Octane Motorcycle will be given away Thursday, Aug. 7 live onstage at the Buffalo Chip, and the winner must be present at the Buffalo Chip Friday, Aug. 8 to claim his or her prize.

“We’re excited to help Sucker Punch Sally’s launch its newest product,” said Buffalo Chip owner Rod Woodruff. “Our mission at Buffalo Chip is to continue to provide bikers the best party anywhere, and the Sucker Punch launch and bike giveaway are definitely something to look forward to this year.”

sps bar type banner

Original Octane will be available to the general public in August and can be purchased at www.spsbeverageco.com or at select retailers. Also in the works for SPS are a new clothing line and custom bike parts, including handlebars and sissy bars, infused with SPS’s trademark old-school style. For more information on SPS and its product line, visit www.suckerpunchsallys.com. For more information on Buffalo Chip, visit www.buffalochip.com .

Customers interested in renting bikes will need to provide a valid motorcycle license and demonstrate Harley‐Davidson motorcycle riding proficiency. There is no mileage limit; rented bikes do need to stay in the United States.

?Mike?s new business venture is another sign of the great things that are beginning to happen in Milwaukee because of the new Harley‐Davidson Museum,? commented Chaz Hastings, co‐ owner, Milwaukee Harley‐Davidson. ?As the only Harley‐Davidson dealer that can call Milwaukee home, we are thrilled to now be able to offer motorcycle rentals through Street Eagle Milwaukee.?

?We are getting calls from riders from around the world wanting to become Street Eagle Milwaukee customers. With the Harley 105th Anniversary, the museum opening this summer and Milwaukee?s great reputation for being ?biker friendly? we look forward to helping make our customers? dreams come true by putting them on late model well‐maintained Harley‐ Davidson motorcycles,? says Chad Cervenka Short, general manager, Street Eagle Milwaukee.

INCREDIBLE BIKERNET STAFF SURVIVED THE NEWS ONCE MORE–I’m posting the notorious Rogue story tomorrow. The guys is 70, rides 30,000 miles a year and New England Cops are still after him and he’s lived in Florida for a decade. He makes a strong impression. Two years ago I sat at a banquet table to watch the V-Twin presentations and mind my own business. Rogue showed up with a fifth of Jack and the night went to hell.

trophyclose

Tomorrow we’re shipping the seat trophy to Shirley. Finally she’s cleared and ready for UPS. Wait till you see the next wild metal art crap we created. Oh, and we ordered a case of 5-Balls for Sturgis trophies.

Nash kicker

Next week we’ll deliver a Storz Performance Sportster conversions tech, another feature from Mr. Linney, our Indian saga and a brief tech on this wild Nash Kicker system. It’s extremely well built and cool.

Nash kickerst

I would also like to wrap up another feature on our Root Beer project bike for the lovely Nyla. It’s gonna be a very cool bobber and featured at several Sturgis Shows including the Bikernet Brouhaha on Friday. This won’t be any run-of-the-mill show. Hang on for more reports on Bikernet. In the meantime let’s ride. There’s already info surfacing that more folks are riding motorcycles because of the gas prices.

Ride Forever,

Bikernet noise study banner
Click on this image to read the official study.

BIKERNET INDEPENDENT NOISE STUDY REVIEW–I read your noise studywith quite some interest. I live in D.C. propper and do a lot of riding in the city. This year I went to a set of Cycle Shack tapered duals. They are quieter than the 2-inch shotguns I was running. This was done for the neighbor’s sake so when I leave for work on Saturday mornings I am not a pain in their rear end. And once of prevention etc.

These pipes are loud enough to be heard while I am out and about.

I just have one question for Ken Glassman who stated that pipes cannot be heard in front of a bike. How often do you exceed the speed of sound? Which is [do not quote me] 776 mph. I have seen aircraft up close out flying their sound but never a bike. Ken what school did you attend? Go to an airport stand at the end of the runway while a airliner takes off, let us know if you can hear it before it passes you.

Thanks for the article, Bandit. It was well written and you even let the idiots comment on the subject.

s&s 50th logo

S&S 50th REPLACES FIVE BUILDERS WITH PERSONAL ISSUES–Some of the most exciting news comes from the addition of five new builders to the program to replace those that had personal issues preventing them from participating. These builders stepped up on short notice to build bikes that show off their abilities and commitment to the custom bike industry. In no particular order, S&S welcomes Kris Khrome (www.kriskrome.com) in the V-Series class, Trevelen (www.sccla.com) in the P-series category, Flyrite Choppers (www.flyritechoppers.com) also in the V-series and Chopper Dave (www.chopperdaves.com) building with an X-Wedge.

The last addition to the roster is Blake Saber from Saber Specialties (www.saberspecialties.com ). Saber really came through for S&S on short notice?transforming a project to be the 50th bike in the celebration, also in the V-Series category. We really appreciate the extra hard work these five will be doing to get their bikes ready for the big show.

As the anticipation for the huge weekend continues around La Crosse, more and more hometown businesses and organizations are getting involved. Look for a stunt show to take place Friday night during the street drags at the La Crosse Speedway in West Salem and watch Bubba Blackwell perform at La Crosse Harley-Davidson on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, Jesse James Dupree of Jackyl will lead a scenic ride around the area to benefit radio station 95.7?s Rock Foundation?helping those in need in the La Crosse area. Pearl Street Brewery, a favorite micro brewery in town has just announced their special brew for the weekend, Proven Performance Ale with a killer label featuring an S&S X-Wedge? engine.

There is also an entertainment schedule for the Fest grounds. Music will play day in and day out at the celebration with things kicking off with the Orange County Choppers Band on Friday afternoon, many local bands later in the day including The Headbolts, featuring two S&S employees, and the Eric Tessmer Band. Saturday will see both stages full all day leading up to the big concert with Jackyl and music continues all day Sunday until late afternoon. At that point you will want to ride to Onalaska for the huge La Crosse Symphony Orchestra Pops Concert in the Park followed by a giant fireworks display.

There will also be an artistic element to the celebration in addition to all the custom bikes. The 50th is sure to be a huge piece of motorcycle history and documenting it for a book will be Michael Lichter, who will shoot all 50 bikes right at the event. The book?written by Howard Kelly and filled with Lichter?s photography–will be available in bookstores by Thanksgiving, perfect for holiday gifts for those that couldn?t make it to the celebration. Also on hand for the huge part will be Stefanie Aziere-Sattler who was recently named as the official artist of the S&S 50th Anniversary. Both Lichter and Aziere-Sattler will have displays at the bike show and at The Pump House, a local art gallery in historic downtown La Crosse.

Still more to see will come in the form of special visitors to the S&S Anniversary Celebration. Expect to see Dan Gurney, Jesse James and a host of other celebrities checking out the bikes, taking in the sights and sharing in the event of the century.

Finally a unique feature in the La Crosse area, riverboat cruises, are available to the public. Each of the builders in the S&S event will host a riverboat cruise on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. You can buy tickets to cruise the mighty Mississippi with your favorite custom builder and learn all about why they build what they build. It will be an experience like no other and perhaps your most memorable of the weekend.

For a full schedule of events, list of the builders, maps, hotel listings and an overview of all that La Crosse has to offer visit www.sscycle50th.com .

We plan to ride to Bennett’s Performance in Long Beach, this weekend to see their S&S 50th bike. We’ll bring you a shot of it on Sunday in the Cantina Post.–Wrench

Chris “Wild Man” Callen, Editor In Chief of Cycle Source Magazine, just telephoned in and said that he is getting the same great economy as his stock motorbike with the D&D Bandit Kit along with a Delkron head kit that pumped up his Harley Bagger from a 88 in. to a 95 in. It makes more horsepower, sounds better, looks outstanding (show quality chrome) and provides the same fuel economy!

Bandit took the challenge and hooked the kit up to his black bagger. And the results? More power and more torque? just what the doctor ordered. Read his tech tip and see if your fuel injected Harley could benefit from it too. Click it here for the Bandit?s D&D tech tip.

Knight Rider

THE DAVID MANN KNIGHTRIDER CENTERSPREAD CONTROVERSY CONTINUES–I was just on your site and checked out the news, from last Thursday?

I saw the “lost” Dave Mann painting with the Knight, as you know Dave was into the medieval stuff pretty heavy.

I carried that painting to Canada back in ’80 or ’81 I think, to give away at the Artistry In Iron Show in Alberta. David Kelly went along as well, the painting went to best in show if memory serves me correctly.

SPEAKING OF EARLY ART FROM EASYRIDERS–The late Hal Robinson, one of the godfathers of the biker ?toon. It would be hard to dispute the lasting mark his work in Easyriders left on the scene, and it still has that same punch today. Here?s a quick peek at one of his fine works that I?ve found across the net. I’m looking for a copy of his book.

I finally scored my copy of Trash from Acorn Bookshop Inc., at Columbus Oh., (614)-486-1860, they may be able to find you a lead on another copy.

Scott Jacobs_In Your Dreams 42 x 62

HARLEY ARTIST SCOTT JACOBS UNVEILS OFFICIAL PAINTING FOR STURGIS RALLY — (June 17, 2008, San Diego, Ca.) Scott Jacobs? photo-realistic paintings continue to astound the motorcycle world and even after fifteen years as one of Harley?s official artists, he still attacks a canvas thinking that this will be his best painting yet. Scott?s time-intensive technique produces an ?eye-popping, Hi-Def? realism which can only be described as a creative marvel. He draws the subject free-hand and then paints with a brush that is smaller than a blade of grass to capture the acute detail. His artworks have found homes in over twenty museums as well as prominent art collections of enthusiasts around the world.

Scott?s ?to do? list included a painting of his daughter Olivia ?a special painting. IN YOUR DREAMS, (seen above) not only IS that work of art; it is also the official Sturgis Rally and Races print for 2008. Scott?s utilization of the ?08 Heritage Softail Deluxe bike in the foreground of the painting pays tribute to Harley-Davidson?s 105th Anniversary. The work measures almost six feet by over four feet and it took Scott over six months to complete. This work is already being considered one of the ?crown jewels? of Scott?s lifetime body of work.

Olivia will be busy this year signing the Official Sturgis Rally Guides (cover depicting Scott?s painting) at various locations listed here. Scott will also be in town to sign prints of IN YOUR DREAMS and other ?never before seen? works at locations including: Black Hills Harley-Davidson, Rapid City Civic Center (w/ Harley-Davidson Motor Co.), Sturgis Community Center and J&P Cycles (w/ Arlen Ness).

Suv

SUV Taken Out by F-16 in Utah–Last April 9th, at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, two soldiers were driving a rented SUV about five kilometers from the part of the range used for live firing. It was at night, and an Air Force trainee in an F-16 who thought he was firing at something in the live fire area lit up the SUV instead. Only 70 20mm rounds were fired. Fortunately, the two people in the SUV were only injured (both from flying glass; the passenger got a dislocated shoulder as he rapidly exited the vehicle when it quickly turned off the road and stopped.)

H-D and MV Agusta

COULD THERE BE A HARLEY-MV AGUSTA CRUISER IN YOUR FUTURE?

There was talk a while back about Harley and Ducati getting cozy, looks like another Italian marquee is in their sights. Forbes Magazine is reporting that Harley Davidson is in advanced talks to buy Italy?s MV Agusta!

According to Italian sources, the deal would see Harley-Davidson buy out most of the debt of MV Agusta, currently at around 200 million euros — 130 million euros held by banks and 70 million euros held by suppliers.

Harley-Davidson would acquire about 80-85 percent of MV Agusta capital, leaving Claudio Castiglioni the remaining 15-20 percent. Today Castiglioni holds 29.6 percent of MV Agusta while 65.4 percent is held by the financial group Gevi.

TOP STREAMLINERS TO BATTLE IT OUT FOR ABSOLUTE MOTORCYCLE WORLD RECORD AT THE BUB MOTORCYCLE SPEED TRIALS IN SEPTEMBER–GRASS VALLEY, CA; BUB Racing has announced that the Bonneville Salt Flats will again be a battle ground for the top motorcycle Streamliners in September.

In 2006 Three of the top speed motorcycles, the Top 1 Ack Attack, BUB ?Seven? and the E-Z-Hook fought strong and hard for the title World Record Holder. The Top 1 Ack Attack, piloted by Rocky Robinson, was the first to break the 16 year old record on the first day of the Annual BUB Speed Trials. 2 days later, 7-time Grand National Flat-Track champion Chris Carr, fresh from the Springfield Mile, screamed down the 11 mile course to grab the record at 350.884mph.

Sam Wheeler in the E-Z Hook streamliner made a one way pass of 355mph but was unable to back it up as required by the F?d?ration Internationale De Motocyclisme (FIM) to achieve a world record, thus leaving Chris Carr and the BUB ?Seven? streamliner with the World record in their hands.

2007 saw less than favorable conditions at the BUB Speed Trials, with the Top 1 Ack Attack the only streamliner making an attempt, ending in a shattering crash at 300mph.Completely rebuilt, the Top 1 Ack Attack will again challenge the record, with the E-Z Hook/Wheeler/Swissperformance streamliner also joining the fray, while the BUB ?Seven? streamliner is waiting in the wings to topple another challenger and put a bigger number in the record books. In addition, Max Lambky in the Black Lightning, a double engine Vincent streamliner will mount a challenge for the record. But even in the tough conditions the Bikernet 5-Ball Racing Team set the World’s Fastest Panhead record and took home an award for the best engineered motorcycle for 2007

All teams are hoping that the weather conditions from 2006 are replicated, and that history can be re-written in another exciting challenge on the Salt flats. The BUB Speed Trials has a number of entries in the range of National and World record classes, from 50cc to 3000cc. With more world record attempts planning to be made than ever before, in addition to the Absolute record, the top record for a conventional motorcycle is also being challenged. Set in 2005 at 252.832mph the record is currently held by John Noonan on a turbo-charged Hayabusa. Included in the mix are also a number of electric motorcycles, diesel bikes and rider?s ranging in age from 14 to 80+. With over 240 motorcycles pre-entered, this year will have an exciting range of record attempts and plenty to see for the motorcycle enthusiasts

Dates for the 2008 Annual Motorcycle Speed Trials are 2nd- 7th September 2008. Limited late entries are still being accepted and spectators can purchase tickets through BUB Racing, or pay at the gate.

Both motorcycles are equipped with the excitingly designed SPAEHN UNIVERSITY OF BIKES fuel tank / seat combination which is steelmade by hand. The single seat is upholstered with finest Alcantara.

Doctor Bob is the name of the more extreme version: The front end is characterized by the SPAEHN UNIVERSITY OF BIKES upside-down front fork with matching cover tubes. The rear swingarm gives room for a 8.5Jx18 rear wheel with a 245/40 R 18 tire.

Professor Bob has a more discreet suspension using on the standard front fork. In this version the 4.5Jx17 front wheel is covered with a 145/90 R 17 tire. The 8Jx16 rear wheel is shod with a 245/50 R16 tire.

The handmade SPAEHN UNIVERSITY OF BIKES sport exhaust systems for the Street Bob are available in two different versions: The customer has the choice between a street-legal exhaust with EC-certificate or a racing version called TRACK.

BIKERNET RALLY ROCKING NEWS HEADLINES

KKI girl

For Sale ? the motor that is from Kustom Kolors Ink.

Hey,

Hang on for this news. Each week it grows and kicks our butts all over the Intergalactic Headquarters. Last night while I hung out in the Wilshire District of LA with Dr. Hamster and a couple of hundred theatrical agents and stars with a handful of Harley execs and the new model line-up, somewhere in the sky was a solstice moon, indicating the emerging summer.

Paul James pulled me aside and said, “You can’t release anything you see here until July 22.” I dropped my super secret, thumbnail camera and we wrestled for it in the only narrow strip of grass in all of Avenue of the Stars. Watch for a new wild Sportster and a tough street fighting V-Rod to hit the streets for 2009. That’s all I can say. Let’s hit the news:

We also have Alowisious Farhatt, The Straight 8?s and Kelly and the Cowboys. We have the Lucky Daredevil Thrillshow and roller derby girls to battle it. Sunday only will be a swap meet open for anyone with a wristband to set-up or shop.

Sponsors are Sucker Punch Sallys, BIKERNET.COM, Torian Chopper Leathers, and Baker Drivetrain.

Meager cost is $35 per person, which is good for all three days or we have a Saturday only pass for $ 30. No one under 18 is allowed on the grounds for any reason. Take exit # 180 off Interstate 40 and go north on 801 for six miles? you will run right into it? or follow your fellow chopper freaks to the Farmington dragstrip.

Smoke Outs aren?t your normal biker parties. This is the one event that the focus is the home-bike-builder. Go to the website and see for yourself the best three days the East Coast offers. http://www.smokeoutrally.com/

GEORGIA:NMA Blog Update Atlanta Suburb Turns Drivers Into Fuel Pumps– It?s a ridiculous concept, but somehow it seemed inevitable. Check out this story from USA Today:

The surging price of gasoline has come to this: a “fuel surcharge” on your next speeding ticket. Drivers caught speeding in this north Atlanta suburb [Holly Springs] soon will have to pay an extra $12 ? to cover $4-a-gallon gas costs for the police officers who stop them. Is your police cruiser running low on fuel? No problem, just pull over someone driving home from work, ticket them, and you?ll have a full tank of gas in no time. It doesn?t matter who you pull over because ? thanks to Atlanta?s notoriously under-posted speed limits ? everyone is a speeder. Need to balance your budget? Maybe you should look to Pizza Hut for inspiration:

[Police Chief Ken] Ball says he was seeking ways to maintain patrols despite record high gas prices. “I was hearing that Delta (Air Lines), pizza deliverers, florists were adding fuel charges to their services, and I thought, why not police departments?” he says. Unfortunately it looks like this isn?t going to be an isolated case. As with any situation where money is available to be taken from citizens, local government is on the case immediately:

Ball says he?s being “inundated” by calls from police chiefs and city managers. “I?ve heard from at least a dozen police chiefs and half a dozen city managers,” he says of the measure passed Monday night. “They want to know how we did it, and could we send them a copy of the ordinance.” Yikes. For an extra dose of craziness, check out this story on phantom speed bumps.

PITBULL

BIG DOG MOTORCYCLES 2008 PITBULL NAMED BEST CRUISER BY ROBB REPORT MAGAZINE–The award marks the second time the all-new motorcycle has been recognized for its design and riding capabilities

WICHITA, Kansas (June 13, 2008) ? Described as ?not a bike for the shy and unassuming? and one that ?demands attention wherever it runs,? Big Dog Motorcycles? 2008 Pitbull was named ?Best of the Best? Cruiser by the editors of Robb Report magazine. This is the second award the all-new, completely redesigned bike has received honors.

In February, Paisano Publications, a diversified media company offering a wide variety of motorcycle magazines, including Easyriders and V-Twin, named it the 2008 V-Twin Bike of the Year.

?We are honored to see the Pitbull receive another award by a well-respected magazine,? commented Paul Hansen, Marketing Director, Big Dog Motorcycles. ?This distinction affirms Big Dog Motorcycles? commitment to fresh, world-class designs. The Pitbull is clearly the showpiece for our high performance, high style motorcycle manufacturing capabilities.?

Don Williams of Robb Report agrees. In the recent ?Best of the Best? issue, the magazine?s 20th annual edition, Williams said the Pitbull handles surprisingly well, has a sensible riding position, and has an inviting appearance. ?Eventually, everyone will be drawn to its beastly beauty,? he said.

?It?s exciting to see the industry notice our fresh, new style of bikes,? Hansen added. ?With sales, marketing, engineering, and our dynamic network of dealers all working together, the design strategy was flawlessly executed.? Additional information about the Best of the Best award can be accessed through the magazine?s web site, www.robbreport.com.

The centerpiece of the Pitbull?s new chassis is an all-new spring seat, stretched one-piece fuel tank, and a new tall wheel combination that is unique to the industry.

Contoured and sweeping, the 4.6 gallon tank enhances the motorcycle?s curves and brings prominence to the boulevard cruiser. Big Dog Motorcycles designers then bent the rules of traditional frame design with an all-new radical rigid frame that cradles the ultra fat 280 rear tire and stunning 20? x 10?? polished billet rear wheel. With a traditional stretch of 6? over standard backbone and 1? over standard down tube, the new frame, together with the spring seat, magnifies the motorcycle?s fresh, neo-retro design. The seat also adds to the rider?s comfort.

The front features a 23? x 3?? wheel, making the Pitbull?s front/rear wheel combination the first of its kind in the high-volume custom manufacturing industry making it a major design element on this fresh, new model. A pleasing 33-degree rake provides excellent low-speed maneuvering, high-speed handling, and strong turning performance.

Like all Big Dog Motorcycles in the 2008 line-up, the Pitbull?s effectiveness is born from a heart-pounding 117 cubic inch engine (1,916cc). With tremendous power and torque, the American V-twin power plant is effortlessly brought up to speed with the company?s trademark 6-speed BDM Balance Drive, the award-winning system allows for better balance, cornering, and maneuverability. The motorcycle is available either carbureted or with electronic fuel injection.

The clutch has been dramatically redesigned for 2008, significantly reducing lever effort and allowing for even smoother engagement.

Other standard features include 4-piston billet caliper brakes (front and rear) and 2-piece rotors for confident stopping; speedometer with integrated LED tachometer; 2-into-1 exhaust; durable steel fenders; and gleaming chrome and polished billet components throughout.

Riders can customize their 2008 Pitbull with over seventy graphic options and a selection of vibrant base colors, chrome upgrades, and an extensive line of aftermarket accessories. These include: made-to-order custom seats, sissy bar and passenger seating; touring bags, and more.

AMSOIL REACHES FOR HORSEPOWER GAINS–Here’s a good example of the benefits of using Amsoil Synthetic Motorcycle Oil and NGK Spark Plugs. Just changing to Amsoil Synthetic Motorcycle Oil resulted in 2 Horsepower gains but the addition of the NGK plugs was a real surprise.

If you aren’t using Amsoil and NGK you’re not getting the performance that your engine is capable of. The 2 horsepower gain is strictly from reduced friction which also means that the engine is running cooler and that it is not wearing as fast as it was on standard oil.

Follow the link to see the dyno results. http://www.amsoil.com/news/2008_motorcycle_dyno.pdf

When you’re ready to order just give me a call or go to my website and place your order through the Amsoil online store link.

OIL CHANGE MYTH CRUSHED–Needing to change your car?s oil at 3,000 miles is a myth. Many cars today can go longer without affecting engine wear. Automakers are regularly recommending oil changes at 5,000, 7,000 or even 10,000 miles based on driving conditions.

Yet research conducted by the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) shows that nearly three-quarters of Californian drivers change their motor oil more often than automaker recommendations. Following the 3,000 mile myth generates millions of gallons of waste oil every year which can pollute California?s natural resources.

Do your part to help keep our world green. Always check your vehicle?s user manual for guidelines on when to change your oil. It will save you money, time and help the environment too. And that?s a change we can all get behind.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY RELEASES LIFE STUDY–On the first day, God created the dog and said: ‘Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes inor walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.’

The dog said: ‘That’s a long time to be barking. How about only tenyears and I’ll give you back the other ten?’

So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said: ‘Entertain people,do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-yearlife span.’

The monkey said: ‘Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty longtime to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?’ And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said: ‘You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and sufferunder the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.’

The cow said: ‘That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live forsixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?’

And God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created man and said: ‘Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give youtwenty years.’

But man said: ‘Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the tenthe dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?’

‘Okay,’ said God, ‘You asked for it.’

So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoyourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support ourfamily. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain thegrandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch andbark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you.

NEW AFFILIATE EVENT: FARO RALLY, PORTUGAL, JOINS CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM– The annual rally organized by Moto Clube de Faro, in Portugal, is the latest event to join the Affiliate program of the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building.Taking place over July 17-20, the rally is now into its 27th year, making it one of the oldest such events in Europe. The rally ran for 10 years before the first custom show was staged. The first event simply consisted of bikes in a field, but that was soon to change with the formation of a special team within the Moto Clube to organize and improve the show each year.

Such was the success of the organizing team that, 10 years after that first custom show, an additional area was added. Known as ‘Custom Farm’, it is specifically for professional builders to showcase their latest builds and has proved to be a major attraction, especially among editors of European custom bike magazines looking for potential feature bikes – such is the quality of machinery on display. Now that it has become an Affiliate event, builders entering this year’s show will have the opportunity to win a travel expenses contribution to go to the World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Sturgis in 2009. With such a major prize on offer, the standard of bikes entered and on display is expected to be even higher than ever before.

To present a bike for consideration for entry, please email coolcat@clix.pt, attaching at least two clear photographs of the bike. Bikes may also be presented at the event itself, up to 2pm on July 19.

Bikes must run and be ridden into the showground, and from the showground to the stage for the prize-giving ceremony, to be eligible for prizes.

A MEMO FROM THE BIKERNET DENTAL LAB–A man goes to an oral surgeon to have a tooth pulled. The Dentist pulls out a freezing needle to give the man a shot.

‘No way! No needles! I hate needles,’ the patient said.

The Dentist starts to hook up the laughing gas and the man objects.

‘I can’t do the gas thing. The thought of having the Gas mask on is suffocating me!’

The Dentist then asks the patient if he has any objection to taking a pill.

‘No objection,’ the patient says. ‘I’m fine with pills.’

The Dentist then returns and says, ‘Here’s a Viagra tablet.’

The patient says, ‘Wow! I didn’t know Viagra worked as a pain killer!’

‘It doesn’t,’ said the Dentist, ‘but it will give you something to hold onto when I pull your tooth.’

BOURGET’S DRIFTER DEMO DAYS–BOURGET’S Bagger Group, Inc., the company set up by Roger Bourget to build production Baggers, will be holding Demo Days on June 19 and 20 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Those attending the event will be able to ride the new Drifter Bagger and see the prototype Entourage. Factory tours and the opportunity to meet Roger Bourget will also be available.

The Drifter is a custom production Bagger which uses an S&S X-Wedge engine and matching six-speed transmission. The bike is 50-state legal and is currently undergoing testing to assure it is also legal in Canada.

Talking about the concept for the Drifter, Roger Bourget said: “I’ve got the Chopper thing done well and decided that I didn’t want to be like everyone else and simply convert a Chopper into a Bagger. We’ve been working on this for two years, and over the past six months we’ve had regular Bagger riders out on prototype Drifters so that we can get the ride totally dialed-in.”

To ensure the ride of the Drifter is the best it can be, the motor is rubber mounted and the suspension has been developed with the help of former off-road racer Walker Evans.

Dealers stocking the Drifter will have the option of 10 paint finishes and three billet wheel styles. In addition, because of the bike’s modular design, dealers can buy a base model Drifter and offer upgrades to meet their customers’ budgets. A complete parts line will be offered within six months, and will include hard bags, fairing options, chin spoilers and a tour pack.

Anyone interested in attending the Demo Days should contact Brigitte Bourget (brigitte@bourgets.com).

BIKERNET TECH QUESTION OF THE WEEK– I recently purchased a 21 inch front wheel. I run the valve off my rear brake that works the rear and left side rotor. The hand control works the right rotor. I would like to remove the right rotor and still be able to use the hand control. Was trying to figure a way to run both master cylinders on one line.

–J. Mead
nub95@comcast.net

That?s an interesting configuration. So you had one rear and one front on one system, and the other front controlled by the lever on the bars? Have I got that right? So now you want to be able to operate the front and rear with either the handlebar control or the foot pedal? Good question. I?m afraid that without a check valve it wouldn?t work. See if you can find a check valve. If not you?ll push fluid into the other master cylinder. I?ll check with my readers.

JOHNNY HUMBLE HAS THE BIKER BLUES–Why is it so much more fun to ride like an asshole than it is to drive normal? Maybe it’s just me. I woke up this am, started working on the Kilby Deuce feature, and decided to go for a ride. Being it was 5:30 am, I started slow leaving the neighborhood, but before I knew it, I was twisting the throttle hard and grabbing for clutch as I hammered through the gears. I made my rounds by each one of my friends’ houses, as they were all getting the last bit of sleep possible, before they had to start the grind.

RARE DAVID MANN PAINTING FOUND–A girl named Donna Blanchard called recently. She told me her husband won a piece of David Mann art in a bike show raffle 30-some years ago. She wasn’t sure what she had or what to do with it. She also said it was signed on the back.

Of course I asked for confirmation and asked her to send me an image of the back and front of the art. First she sent me a PDF of the back and it contained writing from Lou Kimzey, the first publisher and creator of Easyriders magazine. I recognized it immediately since I worked side by side with Lou for almost 10 years.

David

Then she sent me a shot of the front and the actual illustration. I was blown away. I often suggested themes for Dave’s art, but this was a unique one. I left Easyriders in 1981, since Lou was acting sorta strange, and I was ready to try something new. But I remained close to Dave and stopped in to see him once in a while. So I suggested this theme after my departure.

Dave mistakenly mentioned my input to Lou and he refused to use, what I considered one of his finest centerspreads. He shipped it off to be given away at a bike show. This illustration was the precursor to Dave’s famous GHOST RIDER centerspread. You can imagine how startled I was to see it again. So now it’s out in the open, we may see it as a print some time in the future.

DAYTONA TWIN TECH SCANNER TECH– Read Rogue’s Daytona Twin Tec feature. He did a great job!! I’ve used this product along with the WEGO sensors during Dyno tuning. Works good with SE Race Tuner also. Daytona Twin Tec’s ignition system module is also a great replacement for the H-D EFI module. Great for a shop that doesn’t have a Dyno!!!

This is “the” product for a aftermarket shop having to deal with H-D EFI systems, trouble codes etc. All you need after you have the codes is the Electrical part of the H-D service manual. Find the code/codes and use the H-D flow charts to troubleshoot a problem. The cost for this tool can be paid for easily by saving you a trip to the dealership and having to hook up to H-D’s DT (puter).

BIKERNET KING WEATHER REPORT–Back at you in a cloud of dust and sweltering heat. It’s been in the upper 90s-low 100s here for about a week now, but temps are supposed to moderate later this week. Time to ride up to the Appalachian Mountains where it’s a little cooler.

Still waiting for a rainy day to install those floorboard brackets and Heritage bars on the RK. Replaced the stock rider’s seat with a Mustang solo. No more problems with the sled since I replaced the check valve/fuel supply line assembly. Premium’s running about $4.20 here now, but I reckon that’s still a mite less than what y’all are paying in CA.

Mongols

NORTH COUNTY MONGOLS CHAPTER MEETING ? Several hundred members of the Mongols motorcycle club are expected to arrive this weekend at the La Jolla Indian Reservation Campground near Palomar Mountain for an annual chapter meeting

The Mongols are considered one of the most violent motorcycle clubs in the country. One well-known incident occurred in April 2002 at a casino in Laughlin, Nev., where two Hells Angels and a Mongol were killed in a shootout. In September 2003, a Mongol member shot and killed a man after an argument outside a bar in El Cajon. The biker was sentenced to life in prison in 2005

The Sheriff’s Department will ?have extra staff on alert and some on standby should it be necessary for them to respond,? Undersheriff Bill Gore said.

He said the Mongols have a right to hold their function. ?As long as they obey the laws, they’ll have no problem, and we’ll have no problem,? Gore said.Gore said the department didn’t have an accurate count of how many members are expected at the campground, but it could be as many as 500.

The meeting is expected to last through tomorrow.A person who answered the phone at the campground declined to comment.Yesterday afternoon, several Mongols had been cited for misdemeanor vehicle code violations, said sheriff’s Sgt.

Jason Rothlein.Riverside County authorities arrested about a dozen Mongols yesterday on various charges and issued numerous citations in a stop on Interstate 15 near the Riverside-San Diego county border, said Temecula police Sgt. Ken Southern.

Traffic was backed up in both directions along I-15 as a helicopter circled overhead and several motorcycles were towed from the southbound shoulder.Southern said 14 motorcycles and a few other vehicles were seized. The Mongols started in the 1970s in California. The group has chapters in California, Oklahoma, Colorado, Arizona, Montana, Nevada and Mexico.

Bonne

FATBOB BONNE BELLE FOR BONNEVILLE 2009 UPDATE– After a lengthy conversation with Ed, my authority on British cycles, I have to advise you to use a Triumph tranny, more gear selections, stronger by far. Ed says Nortons are the shittiest of the three, BSA, triumph, and Norton. The pre-unit uses a single row chain, and the unit uses a double row so, by using the later clutch, you have a double row primary. I can get a used box for 150 and the clutch for a 100, the servicing (rebuilding should be no more than 3-4 hundred) so we are looking at around a nickel.

If you want to talk to Ed his number is 815 653 7000. I have the Victory literature on how to make the mounting shit. If you want copies sent with the tranny let me know. The final drive sprocket selection is greater with the Triumph. You can go chain easier though. I might consider being a sponsor for the Bonne Belle.

WE, THE CONSUMERS, MUST TAKE ACTION! — The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can’t just stop buying gas.

But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here’s the PLAN: For the rest of this year, DON’T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. And under no circumstances buy from CITCO. (CITGO is owned by Hugo Chavez, the dictator of Venezuela, and an enemy of US) If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $2.00 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK. We may have to hit SHELL & BP too! But lets send a message to Mobil/Exxon First! Remember, they are the ones that brag about their

$40,000,000,000.00 PROFIT LAST YEAR.

Friends, That’s FORTY BILLION OF OUR AMERICAN DOLLARS!

HINES PADS NHRA POINTS LEAD WITH SEMI-FINAL RUN AT CHICAGO–Screamin? Eagle V-Rod Riders Hines and Krawiec Face Off in Round Two.

JOLIET, Ill.. (June 8, 2008) ? Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines rode a Harley-Davidson V-Rod to the semi-final round of Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations at the Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 NHRA Nationals. First-round losses by Matt Smith and Chip Ellis, his closest rivals in the 2008 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle standings, allowed Hines to add to his season points lead.

Hines qualified second for the event with a pass of 7.028 seconds, just behind Chris Rivas, who made a run of 7.027 seconds in the second qualifying round on Friday to take the number one position. Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec qualified seventh with a 7.106 pass.

On Sunday, Hines won his first-round race when Buell-mounted Tom Bradford jumped the start. Krawiec (7.158) defeated Rockland Motorsports Buell rider Matt Guidera (7.189) to win his first-round race, and would face his teammate, Hines, in the second round. Severe weather moved through the area, however, and delayed the racing action for nearly four hours. When the second round resumed, Krawiec left early and gave the win to Hines on a red light. In the semi-final, Hines (7.156/.054 reaction time) lost at the starting line to Craig Treble (7.141/.013) on the Team Tigue Suzuki. The loss was the first for Hines in 11 consecutive elimination rounds. Treble (7.134) lost to Rivas (7.051) in the final round.

?The good news is we leave Chicago with a 99-point lead for the championship,? said Hines. ?My Screamin? Eagle V-Rod was not as strong this weekend as it has been earlier in the season. We tried a few new things with the set-up that didn?t seem to work, and we swapped motors after each round today, and it caught up with us. We?ll be going back to the set-up we used to win in St. Louis, and I?m confident we?ll get that performance back for Englishtown.?

Krawiec was fighting electrical problems all weekend, which appeared to be solved before the second round.

?We were chasing a misfire since the second round of qualifying, and finally got it fixed for the second round against Andrew,? said Krawiec. ?There were four red lights in that lane on Sunday, but it was especially disappointing to leave early because the bike made a really strong pass.?

Krawiec will be on familiar territory when the NHRA makes its next stop at Englishtown, N.J., where he was the track manager at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park for six years before joining the Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team.

?Mentally I?ll be 100 percent at Englishtown,? he said. ?That?s my home track and I?ve probably made more passes there than all the riders in Pro Stock Motorcycle combined. There?s nothing I don?t know about the track, and that?s an advantage for me.?

After five rounds in the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Hines has 482 points to lead the Pro Stock Motorcycle class. Smith is second with 349 points, followed by Ellis with 325. Krawiec is seventh with 273 points. NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycles will race next at the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals, June 19-22, at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ.

THUNDER ROAD TO HOST DAVE PEREWITZ CUSTOM PAINT BIKE SHOW– STURGIS, S.D. ?June 7, 2008?Thunder Road, known as the ?Custom Capital of Sturgis,? is home to some of the motorcycle industry?s hottest customs during Sturgis Bike Week. This year will be no exception as Thunder Road prepares to host the Dave Perewitz Custom Paint Bike Show, which will highlight some of the industry?s best art. This premier event will be sponsored by Kryptonite Locks.

Instead of focusing on the machines themselves, as most shows at Sturgis do, this day will be all about the industry?s artistic side. The Dave Perewitz Custom Paint Bike Show will focus on the paint and finishes industry professionals use to achieve those slick custom looks.

The show?s namesake, Dave Perewitz, will also be exhibiting some of his famous customs. Dave has been building and customizing motorcycles since the early 1970s, and his celebrity clientele has includes the likes of Hulk Hogan, Brad Whitford and Kyle Petty. Considered a master of all aspects of the customization process, from engineering to aesthetics, Dave?s bikes are regarded as ?art in motion.?

?Dave Perewitz has created some of the industry?s best customs motorcycles with his signature flame jobs? said Promoter Carrie Repp of R&R Promotions ?This show will give every painter and builder the opportunity to compete with their peers on strictly the quality and aesthetic appeal of their work.?

Awards will be given in a variety of categories, including best pearl, best candy, best use of color, best artwork, best graphics, best in show and Perewitz best flames. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the awards will be announced at 5 p.m.

The Dave Perewitz Custom Paint Bike Show is sponsored by Kryptonite Locks and will be held in Thunder Road?s Thunderdome. Admission to the Thunderdome is $5, but there is free parking and Glencoe Gold campers get in free. For more information, please visit www.thunderroadsturgis.com.

Buell

BUELL TAKES OVERALL WIN AT MOTO-ST ROAD AMERICA 500–First North American Pro Win for 1125R.

Elkhart Lake, Wis. (June 9, 2008) ? The No. 8 Bruce Rossmeyer?s Daytona Racing Buell 1125R ridden by Shawn Higbee and Steve Crevier clinched pole and took the overall and Buell Motorcycle Company SuperSport Twins class wins at the MOTO-ST Road America 500K in Elkhart Lake, Wis. June 7. It was the first major North American professional road racing win for the Buell 1125R.

Unpredictable and rapidly changing weather conditions delayed the start of the originally scheduled 3-hour race by more than an hour and ultimately reduced its length to 1 hour and 40 minutes. Tire choice was a gamble, with the formation of a dry racing line hampered by sporadic light drizzle throughout the race that favored teams that chose intermediate or full-wet Pirellis. But the Buell pulled to the front on Lap 17 of the 36-lap race and pulled away to a 31-second lead over the second place No. 6 Aprilia USA/Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Aprilia Tuono 1000R.

?I don’t have a lot of rain experience at this track,? said Higbee. ?We were a little conservative early and after about 10 laps a dry line started to appear. Then it started drizzling just as I was getting happy with the track and I think that was a defining moment. I backed it down a lot and from then on the race seemed to go our way.?

Canadian Steve Crevier, who joined the Bruce Rossmeyer?s Daytona Racing team at the Road America round, echoed his teammate?s comments about the weather: “It was crazy out there,” the six-time Canadian Superbike champion said. “We thought about going to a slick tire on the final stint, but didn’t want to take the chance in case we got downpour.?

In the BMW Motorcycles GrandSport Twins (GST) class, the No. 70 James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing Buell XB12R sponsored by Harley-Davidson/Buell of Appleton and ridden by Paul James and Jeff Johnson took third place and jumped to the lead in the GST class standings after the first three rounds, taking over the points lead from the No. 7 Ritchie Morris Racing/Hal?s Harley-Davidson/Buell XB12R ridden by Clint Brotz and Dan Bilansky, which retired early with a rear wheel bearing failure. The No. 70 now leads the GST class with 92 points followed by the No. 7 with 88. The James Gang/Hoban Brothers team also earned the Roaring Toyz Best Looking Team award.

?Tire choice was critical,? said Paul James. ?We made the call to switch to DOT tires during our final pit stop, but the Pirelli rain tires the class leaders used appeared to hold up for the whole race distance, and in hindsight those were the better choice. But it?s great to have a solid finish on our home track, and I always knew we had the best-looking team!?

HOLLISTER RALLY COMING UP–The 60th anniversary of the Hollister Rally was the largest one so far. July 6th, 7th and 8th brought more vendors, more bands, more builders and more entertainment than ever before.

Record crowds visited the rally to shop at California?s largest motorcycle marketplace. Friday was the largest in rally history and Saturday was almost twice the normal crowd. Rally week brought in 130,000 people to the sleepy little town of Hollister.

The new layout with the vendors on San Benito St (the Main st) was embraced by law enforcement and the city as well. This move has secured the rally for years to come.

The Baker Builders Square , sponsored by Baker Drivetrain was packed all weekend as fans check out over a dozen of the countries best bike builders and talked about new projects with them.

There were three stages with non-stop entertainment all weekend long. bands, boxing, fashion shows and the Ms. Hollister contest filled the 33 hours of the rally. If that wasn?t enough David Chaves International Trials superstar thrilled the crowds throughout the day in Vendor Village.

Sunday on the main stage there was a special surprise. Hollister dubbed the Birthplace of the American Biker Movement; it is home to some of the original riders of 1947. Six individuals, Peter Lomanto, Jess Bravo, Joe Bravo, Harry Prater, Babe and Johnny Lomanto from 77 to 90 years old gathered at this years Rally to celebrate its benchmark of 60 years. They represent one of the most extraordinary eras in our history. Following WWII there was an explosive energy of living and loving life. They shared stories of the tremendous freedom then? riding the hills, racing across open fields, sleeping under the stars amidst piles of hay.

Hollister Police Chief Jeff Miller recapped by saying ?this was the safest, smoothest and most organized rally to date.? Considering that this was the largest that?s quite a statement.

Horse Power also plans on adding more VIP bike parking for 2008 as it sold out early this year. All proceeds from the bike parking along with the other profits go to local youth programs and non-profits.

Horse Power Promotions pulled this together in six months. Now with 12 months before the 2008 rally Horse Power will be focusing on bringing back racing, hill climbs, concerts and spreading out to surrounding areas and country side. ?The riding is great up here and there is no reason for people to ride all this way and just cruise around the town of Hollister,? stated Seth Doulton of Horse Power Promotions.

The 61st Hollister Rally is July 11th, 12th and 13th 2008. Keep an eye on www.horsepowerpromotions.com as we announce more events for 2008.

AFFILIATE EVENT–FLYING CHOPPERS IS NEW SCANDINAVIAN CHAMPION– Flying Choppers from Finland have won a bike freight expenses contribution to compete at this summer’s 5th annual Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building (OWC) by winning this weekend’s (June 7) Custom Bike Show, Norrtelje, Sweden.

Organized by Twin Club MC, Custom Bike Show is the OWC program’s Scandinavian Championship of Custom Bike Building, and is believed to be the oldest established custom motorcycle competition in the world.Hugely prestigious in a European context, the event pulls competitors from all over Scandinavia and the rest of Europe and is a one-day ride-in show staged in a downtown City Park in a model of community collaboration with the City authorities.

As ever, the standard of the event reflected the tastes and styles of custom design and engineering in that part of the world. This was the fourth year that the event had been an Official Affiliate, and the winner’s prize (given by Twin Club MC) is worth some 5,000 euro (nearly US $8,000) with additional prizes of some 3,000 euro (approx US$4,700) each for second and third-placed winners to compete at the annual Official European Championship.

This year saw Peder Johanssen of Hogtech (Sweden) take second place with the bike that he has built for the S&S Cycle 50th Anniversary celebration at La Crosse, Wi., at the end of the month. Peder will then be keeping the bike in the Unites States to also compete at the OWC.

For the first time, though, two bikes tied for third place, and the builders will share the prize. Swede Lasse Sundberg scored with his 40 inch over, Redneck-framed chopper that featured twin dual updraft carbs on an Indian Power Plus engine. He tied with Anders Goeth’s very tidy ‘Speed Bob’ bobber, which all points to the incredible diversity that this show produces and that the OWC Affiliate program promotes.

The event itself drew excellent crowds on what is the National holiday weekend in Sweden, and saw outstanding weather and excellent support from several Europe-wide parts and accessory distributors, including Custom Chrome Europe, Motorcycle Storehouse, MotoSpeed of Sweden, and Redneck Engineering’s Sweden-based European operation. The Affiliate program’s next stop is the Faro Rally in Portugal on July 17-20 (see www.motoclubefaro.pt for more details).
