STURGIS RIDERS ALERT! DRUG AND GUN CHECK–On Interstate 64 Approx. 70 miles East of St. Louis there is a sign ? DRUG & GUN CHECK followed by DRUG DOG.When I rode by on Wednesday there was no one there and that may be because it was raining very heavy and I suspect those doing the stops did not want to get wet.

CARLO AND EMMA ON THE ROAD AGAIN!– We did the Ground Zero run last week. I had goose bumps almost the entire ride. Now imagine this, 600+ motor-sickles cruising down the NYC freeways with a Police escort leading us out of town.

The entire freeway system is shut down no one is able to get on the freeway with us, we (the bikes) are the only ones on the road!!!

We were cruising at about 40mph. We were in the front of the pack so when we looked behind all we saw was a Ribbon of Harley Davidsons.

The roar is music to my ears, the site is spiritual a Run to Honor our Fallen Hero’s from Ground Zero. (You remember when the terrorist ran planes into the twin towers, the Pentagon & the last plane did not make it’s target as the Proud American passengers stood up and said we are not going to go the way you want us to we are in charge of our destination and ran the plane into the ground in PA? You do remember right? Well this is something we should Never Forget!)

The ribbon seems to float along undisturbed the wind carrying us like an Eagle, soaring along our way feeling like the Proud Americans we are, following the police escort 65+ miles still the goose bumps makes the hot day seem “cool” against my skin. We reached our destination, (a little sad that I had to come back to reality) Kruckers in Pomona NY and had an ALL YOU EAT BBQ, ribs, chicken the works plus watermelon and Ice cream.

When we arrived ate lunch my work continued, “A labor of Love and Honor.” I was the emcee!! There were bike games, tattoo contest & a 50/50 raffle live music ALL DAY long this is the BEST run I have ever been on. So let’s see some of you there with us next year OK? OK!!

Carlo & I left Bloomsbury NJ Monday July 29Th., heading for Boston made it here in 6 hours. What nice scenery. Funny how until I came to the east cost I thought like most think of CA that it is just pavement & cars. There are lots of open space. So much History here the beginning of Democracy started in these part.

From here we will meander down to FLA taking in lots more scenic roads. Then back to NYC to meet the Milwaukee crew and head to Harley-Davidson’s 105Th Anniversary.

So come along for the ride and when you see someone ride by on a Motor sickle wave & say to yourself “THIS IS THE LAND OF THE FREE!”

Until we meet again.

Stay safe and “get on your bad motor-scooter and ride”!!!!!!!

–Emma

BIKERNET QUOTE OF THE DAY– Like I repeat incessantly to my son, “Every day learn, earn and make the world a better place.Every drop of “volunteering” helps. It’s good karma.

Bon Voyage.

Talk to upon your return.

Click Baldwin Dies in Motorcycle CrashThe owner of Carolina Harley-Davidson/Buell died in a motorcycle accident in Missoula, Montana– Clifton ‘Click’ Baldwin’s motorcycle collided with a car Tuesday morning. The owner of Carolina Harley-Davidson/Buell died in a motorcycle accident in Missoula, Montana.Clifton “Click” Baldwin’s motorcycle collided with a car Tuesday morning. He was airlifted to St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula, Montana, and died later that night.

There were 14 fellow members of the Hamster’s Motorcycle Club with Baldwin at the time of the crash.

They were en route to the 68th Annual Sturgis Rally in South Dakota.

Baldwin’s wife, daughter, mother and brother flew to Montana. Several of his friends and fellow Hamster’s members also made the trip to be with the family.Baldwin was a native of Belmont, North Carolina.

On Wednesday, Baldwin’s company released the following written statement: “His generosity was demonstrated over the years through his participation in all fourteen Kyle Petty Charity Rides and through numerous Poker Run’s benefiting local charities, and Victory Junction Gang Camp for chronically ill children.”

In lieu of flowers, the dealership is asking for donations towards “Bricks for Click” to be a part of their memorial sidewalk at the dealership.

road king

BIKERNET TECH TESTIMONIAL–I am now in the market for a new bike and have a lot of ideas running through my head, I’m sure you get messages all the time about certain bikes, parts, techs., rides, etc. But I pretty much stumbled onto your website and the King Report by mistake. My dream bike is very similar to the ’03 king you built up (prob still are riding) and I just wanted to thank you for the things that you have posted. I feel like I have learned a lot from reading your posts.

I do have a quick couple questions though and since it has been so long since those posts, my feelings won’t be too shattered if you dont know the answers. I was wondering if you have a part number or anything on that SE exhaust system? I can’t seem to find it anywhere online, but I have yet to go to the dealerships.

Actually I think that is the major question I had today. I’m sure I will think of something later though.

Thanks a lot hoss, I appreciate your articles.

Hey DJ, Thanks for the note. I would suggest this system for your King?the best performance. Check this link: www.bikernet.com/garage/PageViewer.asp?PageID=2134.

Let me know if you have any other questions. If you?re dead set on the Screamin? Eagle system, I?m sure you can find it in a Harley Accessory catalog, if they still make it. It was stainless steel and I had it blacked out.–Bandit

fatbob poem

FATBOB POEM FRAMED FOR WOJAHN– Here is the famous Wojahn. Tom did my ’46 and great if I say so myself. I wrote him a poem, and I left enough room for him to draw a cartoon of himself. It turned out cool. He is going to redo the passenger door he spelled Davidson wrong. I laughed my ass off.

He was upset and I told him no big deal. It will be done on the morrow.

I watched him letter my neighbors stockcar when I was 14 years old. I think he does great for 82.

CLOSING THE BOOK ON ANOTHER NEWS COLUMN–We’re packing, scrubbing, beating the dogs, and hauling ass for the Badlands. The Sunday Post will be light and next week the news will be short and sweet, but we’re not leaving you holding a empty bag (paper or plastic). We scored Doc’s Hollister report before he left. I may have something on a new fantastic artist from Australia, Paul Garson submitted a short V-Rod radiator tech and there’s something else floating around that might be launched before we hit the road, if I can find the bastard.

As soon as we return we’ll deliver Brouhaha and Sturgis coverage, plus a road test of the Softail Custom from Jon Towle. We’ll work on bike features from Sturgis, Ms. Bikernet from Sturgis and a Girl of Bikernet from the Badlands. We’ll be cooking, including a feature on Nyla’s bobber from Lucky Devil Metal Works in Houston. Here’s some Root Beer Paint Shots. Can’t wait to see this bike. So hang on. We’ll be back.

There’s official H-D air cleaner added to Samson pipes, and now I need to find a spot on the truck for it. Look out. Sunday you’ll see the final best of show trophies custom painted by Jim Murillo.

94.1 KMPS Welcomes:JAKE OWENWith Special GuestsBACKFIRE BAND– JAKE OWEN to ?YEE HAW? the Napavine Amphitheater and its been a long time coming. My dad had always wanted to be a professional golfer, and he could have been, but life andresponsibilities prevented him from pursuing that dream. He told me that if this was my dream, and if itwere my gift, them I should go for it, and that I had their blessing.?

Two days later, Owen packed his clothes, some furnishings, his two guitars and a notebook full of songsinto his Forerunner and headed north. ?I didn?t know anyone in Nashville, but I knew I needed to go to theplace where it happens. I found an apartment in Bellevue, about 10 miles from town.

That first week, Ibasically stayed in my apartment writing songs.?When he finally made his first visit to Music Row, it wasn?t to a record label, or a publisher, or amanagement office. It was to open a bank account, a deposit that ultimately reaped immeasurableinterest and dividends. ?When Becky (the bank employee) asked me what I did for a living, I told her I wasa singer/songwriter.

She said she would like to hear my music sometime; luckily, I just happened to havea CD,? he says with a laugh. The following day, he got a phone call from Warner-Chappell Music, expressing interest in his material. Though that arrangement did not ultimately work out, Owen felt thathis decision to pursue a career in Nashville has been validated. A chance meeting over lunch withproducer Jimmy Ritchey (Clay Walker, Mark Chesnutt and Jimmy was raised in Centralia WA) confirmedit.

?We just hit it off right away,? he says. ?We became friends first. But he was very supportive. For thenext 18 months, we basically hung out, writing songs. I hardly even went out of my apartment. I wrote asong with Jimmy and Chuck Jones called Ghost that we thought Kenny Chesney was going to record. Hedidn?t, but that sort of put me on the RCA radar. Jimmy got me together with Renee Bell, Senior VicePresident for SonyBMG Nashville and she signed me.? Less than two years after moving to Nashville, the24-year-old former golfer had a recording deal and basically brought a finished album to the table.

HINES RIDES HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO NHRA FINALS AT SONOMA–Krawiec and Hines Face Off in Semi-Final Round; Hines Builds Series Points Lead

SONOMA, CALIF. (July 27, 2008) ? Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines advanced to the final round of Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations at the Fram/Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway. In his fourth final-round appearance of the season, Hines lost to Rocklin Motorsports Buell rider Matt Guidera, but added to his overall lead in NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season points. Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec advanced to the semi-final round before losing to Hines.

Aboard a Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycle, Hines qualified in the sixth position for the Sunday Pro Stock Motorcycle elimination rounds with a time of 7.033 seconds. Krawiec qualified his Screamin? Eagle V-Rod seventh at 7.036 seconds. Karen Stoffer rode the Geico Suzuki to the top qualifying spot with a 6.962 pass.

Hines opened eliminations with a red-light win against Hector Arana in the first round, and a victory in round two over his closest rival in season points, NitroFish Buell rider Matt Smith, who had a mechanical problem during his run.

Krawiec defeated Team Tigue Suzuki rider Craig Treble in the first round, and won in round two when the motorcycle ridden by Chris Rivas broke at the starting line. In the round three race between the Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines teammates, Hines left the line with a reaction time of just 0.006 on his way to a pass of 7.055 to beat the 0.039/7.097 run posted by Krawiec.

In the final, Hines lost at the light with a 0.050/7.026 run to the 0.018/7.054 pass by Guidera, who crossed the line with a .0045-second margin of victory.

?I really cut it close at the start against Eddie, so maybe that was on my mind and I watched the yellow just a little too long in the final,? said Hines. ?But all the way down the track I thought that I would catch Guidera, especially after the 7.125 run he?d made in the semi-finals. But he beat me by about the thickness of my front tire.?

Beating Smith in the second round was a highlight of the day for Hines.

?I thought it would be tough to beat Smith,? said Hines. ?That win not only helped us in the points, it let us run some rounds back-to-back today and really work on our tune-up. I think we?ll be racing with real momentum in the second half of the season.?

Krawiec raced to the semi-final round of eliminations for the third consecutive NHRA race weekend.

?It?s good to be consistent, because we keep scoring points,? said Krawiec. ?I guess I dropped back one position to sixth in the points, but we gained ground on the teams ahead of us, and now there are less than 20 points between sixth and fourth. We?ll have a real opportunity to move up before the U.S. Nationals at Indy.?

After nine rounds in the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Hines leads the Pro Stock Motorcycle class with 762 points. Smith is 76 points back in second place with 686 points, followed by Chip Ellis with 644 points, Rivas with 569, Guidera with 563 and Krawiec in sixth place with 554. NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycles will race next August 7-10 at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway, Brainerd, Minn.

ERIK BUELL APPOINTED TO AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST ASSOCIATION BOARD–On June 27, 2008, the American Motorcyclist Association officially appointed Erik Buell as a Corporate Member on the AMA board of directors. Erik is Chief Technical Officer and Chairman of Buell Motorcycle Company, wholly-owned subsidiary of Harley-Davidson, Inc. In 1971, Erik joined the AMA as a lifetime member.

Erik Buell’s career with Harley-Davidson began in 1979 when he joined the Company as a Junior Test Engineer immediately following his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh. His background up until graduation included working in the motorcycle industry as a mechanic and service manager in a number of dealerships, as well as racing professionally in the American Motorcyclist Association series as an Expert rider. After joining Harley-Davidson, Erik continued his involvement in professional racing, while also working in a series of positions at Harley-Davidson, including Product Engineer, Project Engineer and Senior Project Engineer.

“The AMA is currently going through a huge transformation into what leadership there believes will be a much better organization, poised to open up the world of motorcycling to more people. After going through my first board meeting, I can certainly say that all the members there are absolutely unified in helping make these changes happen. I am very honored by being chosen to be part of this by the AMA and HDI, and will do my best to apply my experience to deliver to the AMA goals,” said Erik.

BUELL launch 1125CR–BUELL has debuted its 2009 model range with the launch of the 1125CR. It is described by the East Troy, Wisconsin company as “a modern interpretation of ‘caf? racer’ styling” and utilizes the Buell Helicon 1125 liquid-cooled V-Twin engine. It is one of nine models from Buell covering sports, Streetfighter and adventure bikes.

“Part superbike and part Streetfighter, the 1125CR is my vision of a 21st century caf? racer,” said Erik Buell, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer of Buell Motorcycle Company. “It’s got Clubman style bars and a fly screen instead of a fairing. Then we geared it down to optimize acceleration. With a class-leading weight-to-horsepower ratio, the 1125CR takes Streetfighter performance to a new level.”

The second bike in the sportbike range is the 1125R, which uses the same Helicon engine as the 1125CR. For 2009 it is available in new body and wheel colors and with tinted windscreens.

Completing the sport range is the Firebolt XB12R, with a new blacked-out frame, swingarm, powertrain, forks and other components. It also features new high-performance Pirelli Diablo Corsa III tires for ’09.In the Streetfighter range the XB Lightning XB12Ss and XB12Scg are powered by the Thunderstorm 1203 engine and gain Buell ZTL2 front brake with four-pad, eight-piston caliper, a design that debuted on the 1125R in 2008. The XB9SX has its seat lowered by 1.3in to 30.1in.

Making up the adventure sportbike line-up are the Ulysses XB12XT, Ulysses XB12X, and Ulysses Police XB12XP. The latter is a ‘special duty’ motorcycle intended for government agencies and private security firms. It is supplied with a special wiring harness for easy installation of an ‘Emergency Response Kit’, which includes special compact, hard-shell top and side cases, a siren and LED police pursuit lamps.

Buell Blast completes the 2009 range and is powered by a 34hp, 492cc single-cylinder engine. For 2009, the Blast is offered in new Sunfire Yellow and Midnight Black, both with Stardust Silver wheels.www.harley-davidson.com

Mother/Daughter Team, Laura Klock and Erika Cobb, Featured at Sturgis Motorcycle Museum ?First Ladies of Motorcycling? Exhibit– Mitchell, SD – The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the opening of its newest exhibit entitled ?First Ladies of Motorcycling.? The exhibit occupies a room in the museum that has been reserved for exhibits honoring women in motorcycling.

The ?First Ladies? exhibit will include displays about the first women?s transcontinental solo ride in 1916, the first women?s motorcycle club, the first woman motocross contender, the first woman to race superbikes, the first woman to sit on the Motorcycle Industry Council, the first female commercial bike builder, and of course ? Pearl Hoel, the first lady of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Laura Klock and her daughter Erika Cobb are honored to have been asked to be part of the exhibit as they are the first mother/daughter duo to hold land speed records on the Bonneville salt flats at the same time.

Laura Klock is the Vice President of Klock Werks Kustom Cycles in Mitchell, South Dakota, where she and her husband, award winning custom bike builder Brian Klock, work side by side. Their partnership has resulted in completing over 248 new part numbers (so far) which are distributed through Drag Specialties and their website www.kustombaggers.com . Laura piloted the ?World?s Fastest Bagger? to an AMA National Land Speed Record in 2006. In 2007, she piloted the WFB again to an SCTA National Land Speed Record of 146.297. Her personal best on the bagger is 147.359, so far.

Their daughter, Erika, was along for the trip when they were at the salt flats in 2006, and decided that she might like to try racing too. So, in 2007, at the age of 16, she rode a 500cc single cylinder Buell Blast to a new land speed record of 101.359. She also won the Women?s Spirit Award for her valiant efforts, teamwork, camaraderie and for displaying the true spirit of the sport while at the salt flats. Erika?s personal best of the Buell is 107.151.

?We had someone ask us while we were out at the flats in 2007 if we knew if there was ever an instance where a mother and a daughter held records on the salt at the same time. We hadn?t really thought about that, but have since discovered that as far as we know, we are!? said Laura. ?And what an honor to be a part of an exhibit that recognizes, well, pioneers.?

What?s next for the ladies? Laura and Erika are both returning to the salt in 2008, and will be joined by Karlee, Laura?s 14 year old daughter. ?This year Karlee will be piloting Erika?s Buell Blast while Erika will race on a Buell S2. Both know the speeds they are reaching for, and if Karlee gets there, it?s her sister?s record she will beat. It?s a little added incentive for a competitive younger sister. It?s all in fun though. The girls do a great job at encouraging one another,? Laura reports. Laura will be riding the WFB again this year, with plans of higher speeds as well.

Stop by the Sturgis Motorcycles Museum and see the exhibit yourself. And Laura, Erika, Karlee and the Klock Werks Krew will be set up at the Top 50 Rally Park at exit 46 off I-90 for the week of the rally.

SASHA STURGIS FILM PROJECT–My World Artists Productions [MWAP] along with PeakHD Productions will be on location in Sturgis SD, August 2-10, shooting footage for their upcoming hi-def video release, Sturgis Scavenger Hunt Bike Build 2008.

Sturgis is a Mecca for motorcyclists, drawing tens of thousands of riders, builders, and vendors to its legendary annual rally. The premise of the show?devised by MWAP?is to come to Sturgis empty-handed, and build a motorcycle from the ground up, using scavenged parts. MWAP has dubbed their resourceful crew ‘The ReCycle Pirates.’ Unlike all the other bike builders getting airtime these days, The Pirates will come to town with nothing other than drive and ingenuity, leaving with a tricked-out custom motorcycle at the end of seven days.

The idea came in a moment of inspiration at 2007’s Sturgis rally, says MWAP’s David Galinsky. “It just hit me as I walked the streets of Sturgis last year. I saw all the parts available, and I thought: ‘Man, you could slap a bike together in no time if you knew what you were doing.'”

The project demanded an experienced hand at the helm, and Galinsky found a perfect match in custom cycle builder Jerry Jackman of Jackman Custom Cycles.

“We’re lucky to have Jerry, he’s the perfect guy for this kind of project,” says Galinsky. “When I approached him with the idea, he kind of laughed and said ‘Yeah, I can do that.'”

Jackman is no stranger to the idea of a Blitz-build. Before opening his own shop, Jerry and his buddies would compete to see who could build a bike in the shortest time, with the smallest budget, using parts scavenged from anywhere they could get them.

“Sturgis Scavenger Hunt is the same concept, only we have a seven day deadline,” says Galinsky. “With so many vendors and biker-related items available at the Rally, we knew we could get the parts, as well as meet some of Sturgis’s unique characters. The deadline makes it all the more exciting.”

Joining the team as on-air host is Sasha Mullins, a biker-culture celebrity in her own right, Sasha has written two books on the biker lifestyle, and has appeared on Discovery, TLC and BBC television. Sasha is more than just a pretty face, she’s a real, live biker chick, and an inveterate scrounger, so she knows first-hand the thrill of tracking down obscure parts. “I love to scour for treasures and dig around at swap meets,” she bubbles. “When David contacted me about this cool idea, I leapt on the opportunity.”

“Sasha will be invaluable to the process,” Galinsky counters. “She has a great energy, and a deep understanding of what we’re trying to do. When I first spoke with her about the project she ‘got it’ immediately. She was so excited, it got me even more revved -up.”

“The kicker will come at the end when the bike is finished, and we auction it off for charity,” Galinsky continues. The proceeds will be donated to Hungry for Music, a charity established in 1994 to enrich the lives of marginalized youth through music.

“It’s an exciting project for anyone who loves motorcycles and it’s a great way for us to give something back to the community,” Galinsky concludes. “Hungry for Music will produce a concert/event, and we’ll have a big ol’ party. We’ll get some footage, and we’ll help some kids along the way.”

Residents of Sturgis and local businesses in and around the surrounding areas are welcome to open-up their garages and invite the ReCycle Pirates over to scavenger hunt their donations to the project, or stop by and drop off their goods at the official build location 961 Howard Street in Sturgis. To invite the ReCycle Pirates to treasure hunt, contact the production team at 301 523 6656.

ROUTE SET FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON 105TH ANNIVERSARY PARADE IN MILWAUKEE–MDA Heroes to Lead the Weekend’s Traditional Highpoint Event

With a group of top fundraisers for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) from around the U.S. leading the way, a parade of Harley-Davidson motorcycles will travel through the streets of Milwaukee on Saturday, August 30, 2008 to celebrate the Company’s 105th Anniversary.

The Parade will depart at 9 a.m. from Milwaukee’s Miller Park. Public viewing areas will begin at the corner of 35th Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Riders will continue east on Wisconsin Avenue, turn south on Milwaukee Street, then turn east on Erie Street to the parking lots of the Henry Meier Festival Park.

The Harley-Davidson Parade of MDA Heroes will be led by riders who have raised at least $6,400 for MDA prior to August 1, 2008. The $6,400 covers the cost of sending eight kids to MDA Summer Camp. The parade will also include representatives from Harley-Davidson dealerships around the world, Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) members in the H.O.G. Chapter Parade of Flags, Harley-Davidson employees and thousands of Harley-Davidson customers. The majority of participants were chosen at random from those who purchased Harley-Davidson 105th Anniversary Celebration tickets. Participants must have an official parade credential to participate.

Harley-Davidson 105th Anniversary parade

“The 105th Anniversary Parade is a unique chance for the family of Harley-Davidson customers, dealers, suppliers, employees and sponsors to celebrate the excitement of 105 years of Harley-Davidson and at the same time help support the Muscular Dystrophy Association,” said Harley-Davidson Manager of Community Relations, Tony Shields. “In addition, one of the highlights of our past parades has been the Milwaukee community embracing our visitors and making them feel welcome.”

Harley-Davidson has held motorcycle parades in Milwaukee for previous Anniversary celebrations in 2003, 1998 and 1993. On each occasion, the community enthusiastically welcomed the riders, making the parades both fun and memorable, with thousands turning out to see the spectacle.

Harley-Davidson’s 105th Anniversary weekend in Milwaukee includes non-stop activities planned throughout the city. The events will be centered around Milwaukee’s lakefront including music, food and entertainment at the Summerfest Grounds, the new Harley-Davidson Museum and a special Harley-Davidson exhibit at Discovery World. H.O.G. will also celebrate its 25th Anniversary in style with an event at Miller Park. Most events will be available to ticket holders only, but the Main Street Exposition at Veterans Park, an outdoor festival with music, food and entertainment will be open to everyone, creating a perfect meeting and gathering place. There will be a celebration kick-off at the corporate offices on Juneau Avenue and other events at area Harley-Davidson facilities.

Harley-Davidson 105th Anniversary Celebration ticket packages, as well as tickets for the August 29 Foo Fighters with special guest Three Days Grace and the August 30 Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band concert at the Roadhouse at the Lakefront, are currently available by visiting www.harley-davidson.com/105th.

In addition to the 105th parade, Harley-Davidson and its dealers and riders have a whole variety of exciting fundraising activities in store for enthusiasts. More information is available at www.mdarides.org.

THE FOLLOWING CALL-TO-ACTION IS FORWARDED TO YOU FROM–Lynn M. WesleyAssistant State Legislative Coordinator, ABATE of PennsylvaniaPennsylvania State Representative, Motorcycle Riders’ Foundation

Action Needed: Please read the below tofamiliarize yourself with the situation. There’s a proposed resolution that would deny publicly funded health care to motorcyclists

Our goal is to:A:) Fill the Public Safety Committee meeting with as many bodies that willfit. The hearingon the proposed Social Burden Resolution will be held @4:00 pmB) Jam the County’s communication system with emails, calls and faxes.(Drozd is the bad guy, Burn is the GOOD guy and most all of the other PublicSafety Committee members are with us, so please be nice to them.) If youremail is returned, that means we have done well. Please do keep resendinguntil the hearing is over.

C) Ultimately, the supreme goal is to convince Council that if they reallyare interested in saving lives, then work with us.

D.) Last, but not least, hit Drozd from all angles. His personal email isMdrozd@verizon.net

And his home office telephone number is 412.364.1600

On 13 June, a University of Pittsburgh press release announced theforthcoming publication of a new study claiming “Major Increase in HeadInjuries Noted after Repeal of Pennsylvania’s Motorcycle Helmet Law.” in theAugust issue of the American Journal of Public Health. The authors, Drs.Mertz and Weiss claimed, “Even after accounting for increases in motorcycleregistrations that occurred during this period, a 32 percent increase inhead injury deaths and a 42 percent increase in head injury-relatedhospitalizations, raising concerns about motorcyclists’ safety and theimpact of this trend on health care costs.” A full-blown public relationscircus accompanied the release, resulting in sensationalist media coveragethroughout the state and across the nation.

The curious timing of the release, two months before the study’spublication, was revealed on 22 June, with the release of The LegislativeBudget and Finance Committee’s report, “Motorcycle Injuries and Fatalitiessince the 2003 Repeal of the Mandatory Helmet Law.” The official governmentreport found that the fatality rate has remained IDENTICAL and major andmoderate injuries, along with the crash rate, have actually DECLINED! Thestate report also addressed the Pitt study, noting that “it did notdetermine incidences of helmet usage in motorcycle head injury deaths andhospitalizations,” even though that data is available.

Disregarding the findings of the state report, Allegheny County CouncilmanMatt Drozd (who, not coincidentally, requested the Pitt study) introduced aresolution calling on the state to re-enact a mandatory helmet law. Meetingvocal opposition from motorcyclists, Drozd amended his resolution tomaintain freedom of choice, but deny public health care funding to anymotorcyclist involved in a crash resulting in head trauma which could havebeen prevented by wearing an approved helmet. The Drozd resolution wasreferred to the Public Safety Committee, which will meet to discuss themeasure on 31 July.

Committee Chair Jim Burn (one of the good guys) has gone above and beyond toencourage bikers’ participation in the Committee’s deliberations, schedulingthe meeting to make sure it does not conflict with the Sturgis rally inAugust, and we plan to turn out in force. (Although these committee meetingsare generally not open to public comment, he invited “as many as we care tobring” to speak in support of our position.) In the meantime, Council–andespecially Councilman Drozd–needs to hear from the broadest possiblespectrum of motorcyclists. We request your assistance by letting Councilknow your thoughts on discriminatory government actions that penalizemotorcyclists in the name of public safety while completely ignoring thewidely recognized hazards which actually cause m otorcycle crashes and killbikers every day.

You can contact Councilman Drozd at mdrozd@alleghenycounty.us

COOLBETH BATTLES BACK AT HAGERSTOWN HALF-MILE–Coolbeth Rides Factory Harley-Davidson to Win and Regains Points Lead

HAGERSTOWN, MD (July 26, 2008) ? Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth overcame a poor start and fought his way through the field to win the AMA Grand National Twins race at Hagerstown Speedway. In notching his fourth Grand National Twins victory of the season, Coolbeth regained the season points lead he lost last week at Greenville, Ohio, to Latus Harley-Davidson/Screamin? Eagle rider Joe Kopp, who finished third at Hagerstown. With five races left on the 2008 season schedule, Coolbeth leads Kopp by just six points.

?The Factory Harley-Davidson team gave me a perfect set-up tonight,? said Coolbeth. ?I got behind at the start but had the motorcycle I needed to race back to the front. This is a big win to put us back on top in points.?

The 25-lap Grand National main started in a light mist, with Glassman/LZ Racing rider Sammy Halbert getting the hole shot and quickly pulled away from Kopp and American Suzuki rider Jake Johnson. Coolbeth started the race in fifth behind Blue Springs Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle rider Jared Mees. Skillfully guiding his Harley-Davidson XR-750 on the slick clay track, Coolbeth got by Mees on lap three, passed Johnson on lap six, and moved ahead of his championship rival, Kopp, on lap eight.

Halbert appeared to be on the way to his first career Grand National win, but Coolbeth would not be denied. Riding smoothly and consistently, the two-time Grand National champion closed the gap and passed Halbert to take the lead on lap 16. Halbert would not go quietly, however, and dogged Coolbeth for several laps. But Coolbeth?s steady performance and a few slight errors by the young Halbert allowed Coolbeth to edge ahead, and he crossed the finish line with a lead of 1.537 seconds. Kopp finished third, followed by Johnson, Mees and Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew rider Bryan Smith aboard the Moroney’s Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson XR-750.

After eight of 13 events on the 2008 AMA Grand National Twins schedule, Coolbeth leads the series with 149 points. Kopp is second with 143 points, followed by Smith with 129 points and Chris Carr with 100. Mees is ninth with 67 points.

The 2008 AMA Grand National Twins Championship will next race on August 31 and September 1 on the Springfield Mile at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill.

The Screamin’ Eagle Flat Track team is sponsored by Matco Tools.

JON TOWLE GET ACCOLADES FOR NIGHTSTER REPORT FROM A BLONDE MOM–Just wanted to thank you for the write up on the nightster. I couldn’t agree with you more. Though it may be a few months old, the article is great and made me smile, as I have a 2009 Nightster of my own.

My story? I’m a mom of two little ones (almost 3 and 1 1/2) I’ve always been a fast pace kind of girl but I think this beats all previous records. On Monday I decided I wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle. On Tuesday I had private lessons. On Wednesday I passed my permit test, wandered into a Doc’s Harley in St. Louis and put a down payment on the ONLY bike that made my heart skip a beat- the 1200 cc 2009 Nightster. On Thursday I got my license and on Friday my Nightster was delivered to my front door. Granted on Friday evening I was only reving the engine in my garage but by today (Sunday) I’ve already put 60 miles on my new baby.

Some things are just meant to be…..

ROGUE BIKERNET CORRESPONDENT ROLLS TOWARDS THE BADLANDS– I have checked everything I can think of on the bike plus I have installed a Baker Plus 1 Oil Pan to keep the Spectro Platinum 20W50 Synthetic Engine Oil cool and working to protect my engine. The Continental Milestones have the correct air pressure so I get good mileage and handling out of them and also gas economy. A new Alloy Art Swingarm Stabilizer is being tried out as well. I even had Professional Design Upholstery add some padding to the seat and a new panel. That will help me put in the full days of riding in comfort.

rogue use

Cameras have been cleaned and checked so that I will be ready to get some good shots including those at the Brouhahna event at Thunder Roads in Sturgis. I will also be at numerous other places looking for interesting shots for the magazines. Have me take your photo!

I have programmed my cell phone with ICE-Wife and ICE-Son. ICE stands for In Case of Emergency so that if any thing should happen on the ride responders will know who to contact.

Though I will be riding from Florida I realize that for a lot of reasons many will be trailering and I am requesting you keep a eye out for the motorcycles on the road and probably wouldn?t hurt if you had a extra can a gas LOL.

Those riding who pull over and Need Assistance Should Signal Others By Placing a Object A Reasonable Distance Behind the Motorcycle. Hey haulin’ ass in the left lane a person will need time to get over and stop. So many people stop on the side of the road for many reasons so If You Need Help SIGNAL.

The Razors Edge

US Chopper banner

Rick
The author working in his shop.

“The razors edge”, a familiar expression, has returned to our sector once again in 2006. After experiencing robust growth for a period of five years fostered by new TV shows and other forms of media, the motorcycle industry, specifically the American V-twin market that we know and love, is starting to show signs of a “cooling off period”.

The American public has grown dependent on the hi-jinks of Billy Lane, OCC and the like, over the course of the last 5 years which has brought tremendous success to our celebrity brethren while also creating increased sales within the motorcycle community as new riders come forth to join the flock.

This renewed interest in our community has also brought with it the opportunity for others to enter the sector and perhaps pursue a lifelong dream, or for some, just try to earn a quick buck.

This mass flood into our tiny sector has brought with it both good and bad economic effects.

We all recognize the benefit of new talent entering the sector, bringing with them fresh ideas and designs. Economically it forces more competition to the marketplace which benefits the consumer as other players in the sector are forced to be more creative while also price effective in their approach to the new consumer market. Free market economies such as ours are the cornerstone for this action and it’s effect for the consumer.

However, today as manufacturers, we face a new and modern paradigm. New resources have emerged for the manufacturing sector (read: China labor force). These new resources have provided cheap labor allowing an American manufacturer to produce his items overseas while still attaining good margins domestically. As American consumers waiver in their discernment of “quality” versus price, the American businessman can take advantage of this new “margin spread”.

Fewer American consumers lend credibility and credence to the “Made in America” sticker.

While they complain about their salary or hourly wage, they will go out in the same breath and buy a product produced overseas simply on a “cost” basis. You see, we have been trained over the years by product obsolescence and “throw away” goods. We have found a way to produce products so efficiently and cheap using the overseas labor market, that when it’s functional or economic life diminishes, it is simply thrown away and the new “improved” version is bought, sometimes at even less cost than the original.

Folks, we are building our home on a very weak foundation. Although, some might argue that money supply measures are increased (an economic measurement of the velocity “speed” of one dollar handed from one hand to another defined as M1, M2, and M3 money supply), the value of that same dollar decreases as more money is printed to keep the velocity through the economy high. “Easy money” policy becomes a necessary component to keep the wheels turning, further undermining our economic future.

Compound this with the fact that our service sectors are now leaving to countries such as India.

Once upon a time, not too long ago, we had a nation which grew out of the Industrial Revolution as an economic powerhouse producing high quality durable goods which fostered a more mature economy. This in turn, spread into service sectors taking care of and “servicing” the needs of this expanding economy. This provided wide-spread job growth and prosperity in America for many economic “rolling periods”.

Now, we flash forward and notice a time where we are taking this successful formula and entitling other countries with it…… this is the “modern paradigm” shift mentioned earlier. No longer do we care about the production of the goods which trickles money all the way down the supply chain to you and I, but instead we focus the attention to the consumer alone and make him the object of our affection putting price over quality and selling our manufacturing and service sectors overseas to satisfy the consumers veracious appetite.

Rickriding
Rick riding the board track bike he built by hand. It’s featured on Bikernet.

Heck, in this day and age, we have been trained to buy things on credit. Plastic cards buy the consumer his goods without the pain of real money trading hands as we brainwash future generations to undermine their future economic well being in order to grab immediate gratification- “without pain”. Real ownership becomes a fleeting commodity as we are coerced to leverage any purchases through “creative financing” thanks to our benefactors and money lenders who care so much about us that they will lend us the money at a nominal fee, for just about as long as we desire (witness the push for home mortgages past 30 years!). Just don't forget to tell your children to get their credit cards early in life (you can also co-sign for them), so that they can start building their credit! After all, we all need good credit! You simply can’t buy a car or home with cash!

I think this is illegal…. can’t remember the law on this one.

Cash has become such an obsolete tool to barter with. Usually my good looks pay for most everything- I’m sure you’re just as lucky as I am.

Now you say, “What the heck does this have to do with motorcycles?” I know, wipe the sleep from your eyes and reheat that cup of coffee. Our small sector of the economy responds to economic factors in the same way as every other sector. We aren’t as special as we think. In fact, we are the fly on the ass of this economy–pardon my expression. However, I do feel that we share something that others don't. It’s our desire to share our feeling of expression and freedom through riding. Our bikes have been an artistic conduit for over 100 years, giving us a way to express our patriotic feelings, and the one thing that makes our country better than any other country in the world, OUR FREEDOM. Our children place their lives in harms way to help to cultivate, protect and share this wonderful way of life.

I hope that we don’t undermine their efforts and demean their risks by selling away the very thing that empowers us and our future.

We face arduous times. We have the most knowledgeable Fed in history and the most responsive monetary and fiscal policy in our short history working for our benefit. They are doing everything in their power right to fight the effects of this new paradigm and keep our economy moving forward. We are in a period of rising interest rates, increasing commodity prices (caused in part by China exhausting supply), and American debt levels that are unprecedented. Trust me when I tell you, it’s not going to get easier.

What can we do? Well, very simply: SUPPORT YOUR FELLOW AMERICAN!

A company with the name “U.S. Choppers” could not possibly offer products made in China- we would not do this to you. We spend our money using American made materials, American tools, and American workers to deliver you a 100% Red, White, and Blue products.

We simply love our country and our people too much to sell them away for the illusion of easy money.

Our freedom has been paid for in blood and there has been significant cost. We will not let those efforts slip away in vain. Is it worth it for us as a business to pay more for our materials, our tools and our workers? Let me tell you, friend, it’s worth every red cent. I wouldn't trade the quality of my goods or the people I work with for all of the tea in China! For these reasons we have very thin margins and make very little off of our product line, but when we sleep at night, we rest well knowing that no Chinaman can compare his product to ours and we do our best to support our people at home in every way. For these reasons and for you, our American brothers and sisters, we walk “the razors edge”.

s&s coffin air cleaner

S&S AIR-CLEANER KITS FOR 2008 VICTORY MOTORCYCLES– La Crosse, WI (July 24, 2008) S&S? Cycle announces the availability of a billet air-cleaner kit for 2008 Victory Motorcycles. To date, one of the most economical and effective performance products available for the Victory Freedom? engine is the S&S? high performance air cleaner kit. Used in conjunction with a set of Victory Stage 1 performance mufflers, this kit has consistently shown an increase of up to 20 horsepower over a stock 100ci Freedom engine. That?s an increase that you will definitely notice. . . and you don?t even have to open the engine! But until now, they only fit 2003-?07 models.

s&s dyno chart

S&S now offers a high performance air cleaner kit to fit 2008 models. The idea is the same, and so are the results! Big horsepower gains for a very reasonable investment. The new air cleaner kit with a set of Victory? performance mufflers has consistently produced a solid 10 horsepower improvement in our 2008 Hammer? test bike. It should be noted that this is less than what was achieved with earlier Freedom engines, but the lower compression ratio of the 2008 engines appears to hold it back a bit, but the additional power is built just where you can use it.

s&s banner

Like the S&S high performance air cleaner kit for 2003-?07 models the new kit for 2008 engines includes a polished billet air cleaner with a pleated gauze filter, all required hardware, and a calibration card to allow your dealer to load an S&S tune file. Fits all 2008 models except Vision. Contact your local Victory dealer for more information or email S&S at victoryriders@sscycle.com.

THE BANDIT’S BEDROLL STORY–I thought about the Old West and the bedrolls the cowboys used to carry their shit, and it came to me. Something over the headlight, as long as it wasn?t too heavy, could do the trick. The bike would maintain its nasty profile, I could still pack someone on the back, and carry my shit.

As I wound through the canyon, my mind went to work on the bedroll concept. Could it carry all I wanted to pack? Another question smacked me as I rounded another corner and caught a glimpse of the Pacific slapping the Malibu shores in the distance: What about a tool bag? The short answer is yes, the perfect bag for the job.

Then I thought about this bubbly blonde who stuffed her hairpins in my bedroll, so I’d get busted. Bandit?s Bed Roll is the perfect combo of tool bag and weekender engineered by a man who needs to get outta town often. It delivers form and function and keeps your ride looking clean. So pull out your wallet and click here to get your official Bandit Bed Roll Today.

COUNCILWOMAN NAUGLE FEARS THE PARADE OF CHROME IS AND ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN– Thousands of people lined the streets of Gettysburg earlier this month for Bike Week?s Parade of Chime, a yearly ritual that features a seven-mile line of motorcycles filing down Steinwehr Avenue, Baltimore Street and Lincoln Square.

The event is burgeoning in popularity and attendance ? and that worries some town leaders.

?I know it brings out thousands of people, but I was glad when it was over,? Councilwoman Susan Naugle said during a recent Public Safety Committee meeting. ?I think it?s an accident waiting to happen.?

The parade customarily begins at the All-Star Sports Complex, along Business 15 in Cumberland Township, and proceeds into the heart of Gettysburg Borough, circles Lincoln Square, and then heads back out to the Sports Complex.

?The speed is way in excess of the speed that?s allowed south on Baltimore Street,? Councilwoman Naugle said regarding the posted 25-mph zone. ?We have children sitting out there. It only takes one person who is not an experienced rider for a serious accident to happen in our borough.?

The nine-member Borough Council is largely divided about Bike Week, an event that ? aside from the Parade of Chrome ? is largely held in neighboring townships.

Battlefield Harley-Davidson, along York Road just east of Gettysburg, hosts the event, while the All-Star Events Complex and Gateway Gettysburg, near the Route 15/30 interchange in Straban Township, are co-venues.

?Thousands of people come to our town during the Parade of Chrome,? Councilwoman Caroline Smith, who traditionally rides with Battlefield-Harley Davidson owner David LeVan in the parade, said during a recent board meeting. ?The energy is vibrant, and there?s a buzz in the air.?

The event is generally considered an economic boon to the area?s hospitality businesses. But critics link the mega-event to several unfavorable stereotypes: they contend that biker behavior is disorderly, that the event is uncleanly, and that noise is excessive.

?The noise is going to be loud, and sometimes deafening,? said Councilman Michael J. Birkner. ?What we face as this event grows in popularity scares me.?

Harley-Davidson Motor Company, which is cognizant of the noise concerns, has launched a public awareness campaign encouraging bikers to throttle down.

?I do think that there is a perception problem, that these people are unruly,? said Councilwoman Alice Estrada, who watched the Parade of Chrome in downtown Gettysburg. ?I was on the square (during the parade), and I did not observe any of that.?

The seventh annual Bike Week ? which launched Thursday, July 10 and concluded Sunday, July 13 ? was largely trouble free. Gettysburg Police Department reported that they were dispatched to just 10 incidents that were ?reasonably associated? with the event. The most significant infraction, GPD Chief Joe Dougherty said, was a disorderly conduct citation issued to a drunken biker for barking at a dog.

The streets, Councilwoman Smith added, were cleanly too. Battlefield Harley Davidson placed 50 trash receptacles throughout town during the four-day event.

Still, Councilwoman Naugle believes that officials should closely monitor the Parade of Chrome, before an unfortunate mishap lands the municipality in legal trouble.

?We just need to take a close look at the whole parade, before someone gets hurt,? she said.

Aside from the annual Civil War re-enactment, which was held in early July, Bike Week is arguably the area?s most highly attended special event. This year?s Bike Week reportedly drew more than 25,000 bikers to Gettysburg and the surrounding communities.

CARB CONTINUES TO ATTACK MOTORCYCLING–Many of you volunteered to “adopt a cat”, or a specific issue which challenges the future of motorcycling, after reading my article, “It Ain’t Over Til the Cat Lady Sings.”

This email is for those of you who have adopted the ugly cat named “ARB”

ARB has an insatiable appetite for exhaust systems, emission control components and aftermarket parts for highway motorcycles……ARB presents unwarranted obstacles to American business and entrepreneurship while specializing in needlessly redundant bureaucracy at taxpayer expense.

ARB is inviting YOU to a public workshop to discuss modified draft procedures for the evaluation of aftermarket critical emission control parts used on HMCs. (Highway Motorcycles).

SHELL CELEBRATES H-D 105TH ANNIVERSARY–Shell NASCAR Driver Clint Bowyer, Chopper Chicks to be Part of Celebration

Houston ? American icon Harley-Davidson plans to end the summer motorcycle season with a blowout event and Shell is gearing up for the celebration. As the exclusive fuel sponsor of the Harley-Davidson? 105th Anniversary Celebration, Shell will mark the occasion with an exciting lineup of events taking place in Milwaukee throughout the four-day event — August 28-31.

To kick off the festivities, one of NASCAR?s top drivers, Clint Bowyer — a Harley? owner and driver of the No. 07 Jack-Daniels car Chevrolet in the Sprint Series — will be at the Shell Racing Experience at Veteran’s Park on Thursday, August 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to greet fans and swap motorcycle stories. In addition to meeting Bowyer, event goers will have the opportunity to test their driving skills with the No. 07 and No. 29 NASCAR show cars and racing simulators and get a first hand feel of what it?s like to be in the pits with the Shell Tire Change Challenge.

On Friday, August 29, Shell will host an all-women?s charity custom bike build at the House of Harley, Milwaukee?s largest Harley dealership. The Chopper Chick Crew, led by Athena Ransom, will transform an array of hundreds of bike parts into a fully functioning motorcycle within a matter of hours. These women are some of the best in their field and have been featured on NBC?s Today Show, the Discovery Channel?s Biker Build-Off and SPEED TV?s American Thunder in addition to publications such as Easy Riders, American Iron, and Ironworks.

?Anytime we do a live bike build, it?s a huge draw,? said Ransom. ?People are fascinated by the intricacies of what goes into making a motorcycle, and will stop by several times during the day to see the evolution of the bike.? Since the majority of motorcycles are made to run on premium grade gasoline, Shell Gift Cards will be randomly distributed throughout the event to give attendees the opportunity to try Shell V-Power premium gasoline for themselves.

Throughout the bike build, the ?Garage-Girls? motorcycle experts will conduct free seminars to educate audience members about the importance of proper motorcycle care and demonstrate how to perform personal bike maintenance. The ?fully-built bike? will be donated to the RAACE Foundation, an organization dedicated to fighting child sexual abuse by raising public awareness of the epidemic.

The all-women?s charity custom bike build and Bowyer?s appearances are just a taste of what Shell has in store for Harley fans at the 105th Anniversary Celebration and related events. Attendees can also:

? Get the chance to try Shell V-Power premium grade gasoline for free with a Limited Edition Harley-Davidson/Shell Gift Card that will be distributed at select times and locations by roving Shell representatives.

? Be one of the first to demo the 2009 Harley-Davidson? models, all fueled by Shell V-Power, a high-quality premium gasoline. Participants will also receive a free Shell Gift Card during registration at this State Fair Park event.

? Earn Shell Gift Cards and branded merchandise by bringing sales receipts for Shell V-Power premium gasoline purchases to the Shell Racing Experience at Veteran?s Park.

? Discover how Shell is meeting the energy challenges today and tomorrow at ? where else? ? Discovery World.

Additionally, motorcyclists participating in the Ride Home can plan ahead by using the Harley-Davidson? Ride Planner 2.0, which was launched earlier this year at www.harley-davidson.com/rideplanner. It is a Web-based application that not only enables motorists to map out any route in the U.S., but also provides the added convenience of identifying all Shell-branded sites along each potential route, making fill-ups a cinch.

ANOTHER CRAZY DAY IN PARADISE–We all complain about peeps and what a pain in the ass they can be, but without folks we have nothing. And folks make everything happen. For the last month, on a daily basis our Sturgis plans change. Billy Lane is flying in next week to pick up his flatty featured in the White Line fiction on the home page. He’s going to ride it to Sturgis. Doc Robinson, from Heavy Duty Magazine is riding in on a Victory Vision, switching to a Harley and may ride with Billy to Stugis.

If it wasn’t for Edge from the Smoke Out Fame we wouldn’t have the Brouhaha Sturgis show. Seth Doulton, the man behind the Hollister event and our Bike Show Leader, is hauling the Salt Shaker to Mike Lichter’s Exhibit at Thunder Road. Without Mike Lichter motorcycle photography in Easyriders would not exist. I’m fucking with you, but they’ve all helped Sturgis come together for Bikernet.

panhead tor
Here’s the Best Panhead Trophy for the Broken Spoke Show Wednesday. It’s not quite done yet. Wait until Mr. Murillo paints it.

I joke around about the Bikernet University, or Bikernet studies, because I firmly believe building and riding custom bikes is all about havin’ a blast. But we work on some serious shit from time to time to keep this sport alive and free. Our Bikernet Independent noise study is a serious attempt to take the spin off noise regulations and we continue to work that element.

We are now working with a couple of Universities in California and Texas to research emission efforts, categorize their levels and put a cost on regulation. The Bikernet staff believes that the government needs to evaluate their efforts and focus on global warming milestones that will make the biggest difference and allow freedom to reign having little or no impact on emission levels. If you can help, don’t hesitate to drop us a note. It’s damn important to put this study together quickly, before we’re all buried with bullshit regs.

claw
Does this look like an Eagle claw? I hope so. It’s part of my sculpture for Mike Lichter’s Thunder Road exhibit in Sturgis. My time is running out.

So we joke around at Bikernet and keep it light, but we have also always supported our freedoms whenever possible. We also support motorcycle rights groups whenever we can and hope to help for years to come.

Ride Forever,

BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS SPECIAL REPORTS–OLD SCHOOL EXPLAINED, NEW H-D TRIKE REVEALED

Continued From Page 2

us-needsmen2

BIKERNET OLD SCHOOL / NEW SCHOOL / ALL COOL STUDY BY RICK KROST FROM U.S. CHOPPERS–

All is Kool today as we endeavor to put the pieces together in our search to define what exactly we mean by ?Old School? and ?New School?.

Websters Dictionary describes ?Old School? as:
1 : adhering to traditional policies or practices
2 : characteristic or evocative of an earlier or original style, manner, or form

However, Websters doesn?t seem to define what exactly ?New School? is; we can only assume that we take the converse relationship to ?Old School? and apply the rule.

This appears to present it?s own conundrum. While trying to prevent the replication of prior styles, the artist must create something that is absolutely unique. With over 100 years of motorcycle history and hundreds of American manufacturers, this poses a significant challenge in the search for ?New School? applications.

However, we are always challenging ourselves as Americans to rival any prior works, and top them with a new slant and distinct change. Today we witness fine examples of new era creations done by artists who would not accept limitations. In the words of Napoleon Hill, ?Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.?

Our ?New School? artists are a testimony to this fact, bringing with them a plethora of ideas which were born from the passion of creation and an unwillingness to accept ?no? for an answer.

So, you say, what then do we make of the clich? term ?Old School?? In my practical relationship with old school practices, I understand it as not only evocative of an earlier style, but more importantly, reflective of a bygone era where craftsmen were unwilling to let a small detail go unnoticed. These craftsmen and artists created history.

Giving homage to these craftsmen, we endeavor to emulate both their style and their skills while paying heed to their (old school) policies and practices hoping to re-claim the underpinnings of our Nation and what has made us great.

Thus, I have come to the conclusion that whether you have a passion for the ?Old School? or ?New School?, you are really one and the same. If you create your art without compromising yourself or others and do it in a fashion which honors your family and our Nation, your creation will stand the test of time; and your ?New School? approach will become the next ?Old School?.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON INTRODUCES TRI GLIDE ULTRA CLASSIC–Designed from the Frame Up for Reliable, Comfortable Three-Wheel Touring

MILWAUKEE (July 22, 2008) ? Harley-Davidson brings original-equipment design, quality and service to the three-wheel motorcycle segment with the introduction of the 2009 Tri Glide Ultra Classic motorcycle. Based on a new chassis designed specifically for this three-wheel application, the Tri Glide offers the classic styling and popular touring features of the Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide in a vehicle that will be sold and serviced by the network of Harley-Davidson dealers and covered by a two-year Harley-Davidson limited warranty. The Tri Glide will have an MSRP of $29,999.

Harley-Davidson launched a ?wheels-up? strategy in the development of the Tri Glide, and has created a frame and associated chassis structure that is engineered specifically to handle the loads generated by the steering forces and weight of a three-wheel vehicle. Changes to the front-end geometry enhance steering control by reducing steering effort up to 25 percent. The forks have been lengthened by 1.775 inches compared to the regular Touring motorcycle, and rake is increased from 29.25 degrees to 32.00 degrees. A steer damper controls coast-down wobble, and minimizes bumps and other road inputs during turning events.

Harley-Davidson has designed a new rear-axle assembly for the Tri Glide that utilizes an aluminum center section with steel axle tubes. The Tri Glide retains the high-strength and low-maintenance advantages of belt final drive, and the smooth operation of a rubber-cushioned, compensated rear drive. The rear suspension features dual air-adjustable rear shock absorbers.

The Tri Glide is powered by a Twin Cam 103 V-Twin engine with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), rated at 101 ft. lbs. of torque. It retains the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission used on Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycles, but adds an optional electric reverse ($1,195) integrated with the rear differential assembly that is engaged with a handlebar-mounted reverse module. The Tri Glide has dual front disc brakes and a Hayes Brake dual-disc rear brake system with a lever-actuated, integrated park brake.

FORMER INDIAN MOTORCYCLE CEO ARRESTED–Former Indian Motorcycle CEO Rey Sotelo, who was arrested June 15 by state and federal agents on suspicion of racketeering and conspiracy of trafficking stolen parts, loan-sharking, and doing business with outlaw motorcycle clubs.

Local motorcycle luminary Rey Sotelo retired from the business six years ago, but federal prosecutors accused the Gilroy man last week of helping a central California chop shop send a stolen Harley-Davidson to Sweden – without Uncle Sam’s permission.

The bike in question never made it across the Atlantic Ocean, but Sotelo has been charged with conspiracy after state and federal law officers arrested him July 15 in Gilroy for allegedly helping to counterfeit the bike’s official papers. Eight other men throughout Stanislaus County were also arrested that morning for allegedly associating with the Road Dog Cycle in Denair, southeast of Modesto. Federal prosecutors have used a grand jury’s findings to indict a total of 11 men, including five with law enforcement connections.

Chief among those charged are Robert Holloway, 61, a retired Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy who lives in Turlock; and his son, Brent Holloway, 36, of Modesto. The two men ran Road Dog Cycle and face racketeering and conspiracy charges for trafficking stolen parts, loan-sharking and doing business with outlaw motorcycle clubs such as the Hells Angels, according to the indictment filed by U.S. Attorney Joseph Russionello.

If convicted for his alleged part in the Scandinavian scheme, Sotelo could spend five years in jail and pay about $250,000. But the former face of the Indian Motorcycle Corporation in Gilroy – who posted $100,000 bond Thursday – said he has been pulled in with the wrong crowd.

“I’m not the guy they want. They’re just throwing me in this to sensationalize the case,” Sotelo said as he pulled out of his Day Road driveway Tuesday afternoon.

He described his association with the Holloway men as “minimal” and added that his former business, Indian-CMC, gave Road Dog Cycle a bike on consignment that Sotelo said he thought may have been headed for Sweden. He declined to elaborate, though, until he had a chance to speak with his private criminal defense attorney, Richard Pointer of Hinkle, Jachimowicz, Pointer & Emanuel in San Jose. Sotelo was scheduled to appear in court less than two hours later, but he said he was not going up to San Jose. Pointer did not return messages Tuesday.

Right around the time Sotelo joined the IMC team, authorities allege the Holloways and area biker gangs began illegal activities. Road Dog Cycle became a gathering place and commercial supplier for the Hells Angels, the Jus Brothers, the Alky Haulers, the East Bay Dragons and other outlaw clubs, according to the indictment. The Holloway men and their associates “promoted a climate of fear through violence and threats of violence” and received cover from retired California Highway Patrol officer and former part-time Merced County sheriff’s deputy Joseph Tyler, 65, of Merced, who helped identify and conceal stolen parts for the shop, according to the indictment.

Beginning August 2006, the Holloway men and their associates began obtaining a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The bike was for Fredrick A. Noreberg, 36, of Sweden, the chapter president of the Red Devils outlaw motorcycle club in that country, according to the indictment. This is when prosecutors allege that Sotelo came into the picture: Some time between Sept. 21 and Nov. 2, 2007, Robert Holloway, Sotelo and the Swede linked up and agreed to export the bike illegally.

“Sotelo would assist the defendants in the export of this motorcycle by supplying false (manufacture statements of origin) and a false (vehicle identification number),” reads the indictment. Surveillance captured Sotelo speaking with Robert Holloway and the Swede about the plan on two occasions in October before the 21st, when Noreberg received the tampered bike from Robert Holloway. The bike never made it out of the country, but authorities are still looking for Noreberg, according to Sacramento-based FBI Special Agent Steve Dupre.

The charges were announced Tuesday afternoon at the Modesto Police Department by Drew Parenti, Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent-in-charge, and U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott, both from Sacramento. If convicted, the suspects could face decades in prison and fines of $250,000 to $2.5 million.

What Is Going On In Tallahassee Florida–I am starting to think there must be something in the drinking water or people are smoking things they shouldn?t in Tallahassee Florida. Well not everyone but certainly those involved in running the state.

There was some real strange goings on during the recent legislative session and now the Florida Department of Highway Safety has started a statewide campaign called RIDE PROUD-DRESS LOUD.

In their press release they are suggesting that motorcyclists who make themselves more visible or ?conspicuous? are less likely to have their right-of-way violated by other vehicles on the roadway.

They go on to say; To enhance visibility, motorcyclist are encouraged to wear brightly colored or reflective upper-torso apparel. It is also suggested that reflective strips, high beams and vibrant-colored decals be used on the motorcycle itself.

Motorcyclist are already doing a lot of things to avoid other vehicles from taking their right-of-way like headlights on, loud pipes and yes many do wear bright clothes, but it is not working because motorists are still being allowed to use the lame excuse that they did not see the motorcycle.

Most of it is because they were not paying attention to their driving and in many cases doing other things like talking on cell phones.

My sources tell me this campaign is an attempt to gain support for making a law during the next session of the legislature that all motorcycle riders be required to wear one of the vests or jackets that have reflective material on it. I suspect that those behind this will not admit it and at some later date they will come up with data to warrant them doing so.

This is not going to go well with most riders I know and especially those who belong to any organization that wear back patches which includes Motorcycle Rights Organizations, HOG and many others.

I believe the amount of money that is being used on this campaign can be better used elsewhere like offering state run motorcycle schools at a reasonable price.

And putting reflective strips on motorcycles is a definite No-No!

If you feel as I do about this I suggest you help stop this before it goes any further by contacting the Florida Department of Highway Safety by e-mail at HSMV-Info@flhsmv.gov or contacting Kelly Robertson the person who sent out the notice at 850-339-1336 and stated she was available to answer questions.

WHITE SANDS FLORIDA ABATE CHAPTER SHUTS DOWN–On July 13, 2008 the last formal meeting for the White Sands Chapter of ABATE of Florida, Inc. was held. For the past 2 months there have been no officers in place and after contact with many of the members it was found that there are no interested parties to accept the responsibilities of the available offices. With 38 members in attendance it was voted unanimously that the chapter would disband.

Many of the reasons for disbandment are the same reasons that have been reoccurring over the years, ABATE of Florida, Inc. has changed the true intent of the meaning of “A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactment”.

We have become what we vowed to fight against. We now make laws, negotiate with the safetycrats and sell the souls of the motorcyclists for the sake of notoriety. This year is a fine example of soul selling!ABATE of Florida, Inc. no longer cares what the members of the organization think and does not allow them to voice their concerns at state meetings upon request.

The organization has become discriminatory in it’s selection of who is heard and what is said at meetings.White Sands members made the request to be placed on the April state meeting agenda to ask about the lobbyist contract and performance agreement.

Hopefully the membership of ABATE of Florida, Inc. will wake up to the fact that the membership has hovered in the same numbers too long. There is a problem within its ranks. Until that is resolved I will not support ABATE of Florida, Inc.

I wish you all well in your endeavors. I will continue to fight for my rights as a motorcyclists. I will not let someone go to the capital and pretend to represent the motorcyclists of this state and sell us short. If you care to join me….keep in touch.

BUELLS ENDURE AT MOTO-ST BARBER 500K–Buell Teams Score Pair of Podium Finishes in SST and GST classes

Leeds, Ala. (July 21, 2008) ? The No. 8 Bruce Rossmeyer?s Daytona Racing Buell 1125R earned the pole position and finished on the SuperSport Twins podium at the Suntrust MOTO-ST Barber 500K at Barber Motorsports Park July 19-20 after a late-race pit stop problem cost the team the race lead and a shot at a second-straight overall win.

After starting on pole and leading the first five of the race?s 93-laps, the No. 8 Buell 1125R ridden by Shawn Higbee and Mike Smith regained the overall lead late in the going but lost the position during its final pit stop when the team had trouble with the rear brake caliper during a rear tire change. The No. 75 Touring Sport Ducati 848 won the race.

?There was something unusual with the rear brake caliper; I think the brake pad popped out of the carrier,? Higbee said after the race. ?It [the brake pad] was really hot and they had a hard time getting it back in. It cost us a little bit. It seemed like eternity when you’re sitting there.

?Otherwise, the Buell 1125R was running strong. Fuel strategy really played into this race. We were really close to a two-stop strategy. We ended up pitting early to take advantage of the yellow but it may have cost us our two-stopper because at the end we had to come in and that wasn’t planned. But that’s the fun and challenge of endurance racing.?

In the BMW Motorcycles GrandSport Twins class, the No. 70 Buell Firebolt XB12R of James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing sponsored by H-D/Buell of Appleton finished third. Riders Jeff Johnson and Paul James steadily worked their way up the order to finish on the final step of the podium and earned the PIAA Lights Award for biggest improvement in class, having started the race in seventh position.

The No. 7 Richie Morris Racing/Hal?s Harley-Davidson Buell XB12R piloted by Clint Brotz and Bryan Bemisderfer finished fifth. The No. 77 Touring Sport Ducati PS1000LE took the class win. James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing retained its points lead in the GST class, now leading by a one-point margin over the No. 77 Touring Sport Ducati Team.

?This is our seventh consecutive GST class podium, a streak that dates back to last year at Road America,? said James. ?That?s a statement about the durability and reliability of our Buell Firebolt XB12R as well as the dedication and determination of our entire team. We want this championship.?

BIKERNET AMSIOL FUEL ADDITIVE STUDY–While at Amsoil University this week I asked Don Zupec, Amsoil Technical Services Manager, about using P.I. Gas Additive in motorcycles and particularly the Fuel Injected Harley Davidson. I wanted to be sure that I could tell all my dealers and customers the proper amount to use to be certain that there was no adverse effect from using it to clean up the fuel injectors, valves and combustion chambers.

Today I received this response and table, from Don, showing the proper treat rates. The table shows that P.I. is safe for small engines and motorcycles as long as the Amsoil recommended treat rates are followed.

–Nick

Though the new AMSOIL P.I. was originally developed to address the specific needs of automotive applications, it is also suited for use in all types of 4-stroke, gasoline fueled engine. As operational and equipment differences can exist between various applications, how the additive is used in each application may also differ.

Comparing automotive with Power Sports for example we find major differences in such areas as fuel tank capacities, fuel consumption rates, and frequency of use to mention just a few. All these must be considered in order to provide maximum benefits.

It should be noted that regardless of the application, the product is designed to be used for periodic clean-up and not continual use.

Also, under no circumstances should it be used in a two-cycle application. Finally, in all cases the product should be used at a treat rate of .6 ounces of additive to one gallon of fuel. General guidelines regarding the use of the new AMSOIL P.I. in various applications are as follows:

For automotive applications it is recommended that 20 gallons of treated fuel (one bottle of PI) be run through the vehicle with the maximum amount of treated fuel never exceeding 40 gallons (two bottles of PI). It is recommended in an automobile application that the fuel be treated as such every 4,000 miles or 100 hours of operation.

For Power Sports equipment such as motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, PWC and outboards it is recommended that 5 gallons of treated fuel be run through the equipment with the maximum amount of treated fuel not to exceed 10 gallons. It is recommended in Power Sports applications the fuel be treated as such every 2,000 miles, 100 hours of operation or once per year/season whichever occurs first.

For small displacement utility engines such as lawn care equipment, snow blowers, cement mixers, portable pumps, portable generators and the like it is recommended that 1 gallon of treated fuel be run through the engine with the maximum amount of treated fuel never exceeding 2 gallons. It is recommended in utility applications the fuel be treated as such every 100 hours of operation or once per year/season whichever occurs first.

KOPP WINS TO TAKE GRAND NATIONAL POINTS LEAD AT GREENVILLE–Coolbeth is Fourth for Harley-Davidson, Smith Sixth on Darke County Half-Mile GREENVILLE, OHIO (July 20, 2008) ? Latus Harley-Davidson/Screamin? Eagle rider Joe Kopp won his third AMA Grand National Twins race of the season, besting American Suzuki rider Glen Schnabel in a race-long battle on the half-mile oval at the Darke County Fairgrounds. The win moves Kopp one point ahead of Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth in the Grand National Twins season points standings. Coolbeth, the two-time defending Grand National Twins champion, finished fourth on Saturday night.

The win and the points lead are momentum Kopp hopes will carry him to reclaim the Grand National championship he won in 2000.

?I feel like I?m ready to win that championship back this season,? said the Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew rider. ?I?ve battled Kenny before, and I?m fully committed to getting it done.?

Kopp and Schnabel faced each other in the night?s first qualifying heat. Schnabel prevailed in that 10-lap preliminary round, and in the process earned the pole position for the start of the 25-lap Grand National main. Schnabel was out front at the start of the main, with Kopp on his tail. Nick Cummings slotted into third, followed by Coolbeth, positions those riders would hold for the duration of the race. Running a high line on the race track, Schnabel led the first seven laps before Kopp was able to power past the Suzuki, guiding his Harley-Davidson XR-750 along the low line to take the lead. Schnabel stayed with Kopp and briefly re-took the lead on lap 19, but could not hold the position as Kopp charged back to the front. A last-lap charge by Schnabel fell short as Kopp roared across the line to win by just 0.06 seconds. Cummings crossed the line about four seconds behind Schnabel, with Coolbeth another four seconds back.

Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew rider Bryan Smith rode the Moroney’s Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson XR-750 to a sixth-place finish at Greenville. Blue Springs Harley-Davidson/Screamin? Eagle rider Jared Mees finished fourth in a semi-final heat and did not qualify for the main.

Following his win at Greenville, Kopp leads the AMA Grand National Twin series with 127 points. Coolbeth is second with 126 points, and Wrecking Crew rider Smith is still in contention with 116 points in third place. Mees is 10th with 53 points.

The 2008 AMA Grand National Twins Championship will race again on July 27 on the Hagerstown Speedway half-mile in Hagerstown, Md.

The Screamin’ Eagle Flat Track team is sponsored by Matco Tools.

You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny?

Yeah, well I couldn’t believe it…. He was a DWARF!!!He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, ‘I AM NOT HAPPY!!!’

So, I looked down at him and said, ‘Well, then which one are you?’

And then the fight started…..

I SEE A PRO-TOUR ‘S’ IN THE FUTURE–As many of our ?regular? visitors know, we were in the beginning stages of another build when we began the Pro-Tour ?X? build, but we weren?t far enough along for people to envision what it was going look like when completed.

We started with a Genuine Sportster chassis as our platform, cut out and dropped the seat area 3 ? inches, stretched the swingarm 6 inches to give the bike ? inch MORE wheelbase than a full size dresser, added StreetGlide air shocks, built an oil tank that?s cradled between the swingarm horizontals and set the battery just above the oil tank.

What you end up with is a Lightweight, long-wheelbase, low center-of-gravity, drop seat Hot Rod with many attributes of a purebred Drag bike. Here?s the kicker ? this set up will be dressed with same components that you see on the award winning Pro-Tour ?X?! That?s right ? the racy yet functional fairing, the side covers that double as storage compartments, and of course our exclusive ?clamshell? rear fender/storage area.

We?ve designed these components to be duplicated and it is our intention to make this available as a ?kit? that can be installed into any stock Sportster chassis by DOUGZ or any qualified customizing/fab shop.

A SOLID FOUNDATION: THE NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON TOURING CHASSIS–Enhanced Comfort, Increased Capacity and Refined Maneuverability for the Road.

MILWAUKEE (July 22, 2008) ? The new chassis that underpins the 2009 Touring motorcycles from Harley-Davidson improves comfort and functionality of these legendary machines, while preserving the timeless character that makes a Harley-Davidson Touring bike the King of the American road.

The Touring frame, triple clamps, swingarm, engine mounts, exhaust system, rear fender, wheels and tires have been redesigned, and together provide the foundation for what are truly all-new motorcycles. Key styling elements ? including the front end, fuel tank, saddlebags and Tour-Pak ? are essentially unchanged, so that these Touring models are visually similar to those distinctive motorcycles that precede them. Ride quality remains smooth, while maneuverability is precise and responsive.

The Frame
Forming the core of the 2009 Touring chassis is a new frame with a single-spar, rigid backbone designed to sustain the demands of long-haul touring riders and today?s powerful engines. The new frame provides a strong foundation that supports a 70 pound increase in carrying capacity. The storage compartments have a 15-pound increase in rated cargo capacity (five pounds per saddlebag, and five pounds in the Tour-Pak).

The frame is engineered to be manufactured with the latest coordinated motion robotic welding process, which offers outstanding dimensional accuracy and weld quality. The frame design results in a 50 percent reduction in parts, and a 50 percent reduction in the total length of welds. T-studs have been eliminated, and the components of the new frame are joined with cast and forged node-tube joints.

A separate bolt-on tail section isolates the main frame from the tail frame, providing better quality-control during manufacturing and more product-design flexibility. The new tail section improves the fit-and-finish of the rear area of the motorcycle through more-precise alignment of the rear fender over the rear wheel.

A new swingarm is formed with a two-piece, deep-drawn shell with a forged pivot section. The new swingarm contributes significantly to the overall system.

The engine-isolation system has also been revised, resulting in reduced engine and vehicle vibration at idle speed. The new system replaces a single front isolator with twin front isolators with a single tie link. The front and rear mounts are designed to provide optimal balance between stiffness and isolation, and are intended to be very durable. Finally, new asymmetric snubbers provide improved control of the clearance between the engine and frame during extreme bump events.

Wheels, Tires and Suspension. A new wheel-and-tire combination plays a key role in the responsive performance of the 2009 Touring chassis. Front wheel diameter is increased to 17 inches from 16 inches (except for the Road King Classic, which has 16-inch Laced chrome steel wheels front and rear), while the width of the 16-inch rear wheel is increased to five inches from three inches. New 28-spoke cast aluminum wheels were designed using finite element analysis for maximal stiffness with minimal weight. The Street Glide has restyled Slotted Disc cast aluminum wheels that have also been engineered for maximum stiffness with minimal weight.

Hang on. In the next couple of days see all the new Harley 2009 models featured on Bikernet. If you’re going to Sturgis check the H-D display and new models in Rapid City, at the convention center.–Bandit

LA CALENDAR SHOW PROBLEMS– I wish I had my wits about me that afternoon to take a photo of the ?Queen Mary Gestapo? driving off in their little green cart with all my wine! Was just too pissed off. My exhibitor agreement said I would be selling wines ? I had it in writing from Jim G that ?carry out sales of wine bottles would be OK?.

When the security from QM showed up we had Jim come over so we could all discussit ? they both just shrugged their shoulders and said ? Oops ? miscommunication? and then they both walked away. I wish they would haveboth talked before we drove 9 hours to get there!

Anyway ? we told people to come by our hotel room on Sat after the show ? had people coming by until midnight to buy wine from us. We at least recovered out costs for attending the event & Travel expenses.

We also got some great photos of our new ?V-Twin Vineyards Vixen? at the event.

Our incident followed on the heels of the security guards going booth-to-boothand confiscating any beers in personal coolers, cars & trailers. I?ve never seen anything like it before ? at least not sincehigh school prom.

There were a lot of pissed-off vendors. I was open to staying the rest of Sat just to promote ? but we bugged out that afternoon since we couldn?t sample or sell. I thought for everyone?s best interest that we check-out that afternoon and go play tourist on Sunday. Probably won?t be attending that event again.

12th Beast of the East: States Winning The Fight

custom chrome banner

Buck1

April 21-22, 2006, Charlotte, NC—The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) and Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE of North Carolina, Inc. hosted Beast of the East, which drew 122 people from 14 states. Biker’s rights issues are rooted in the core values of the American system—freedom and equal treatment under the law. As the gathering of activists attests, where bikers choose to work the system, the system works for them. Progress is made in state legislatures and on federal issues by the most active motorcyclist’s rights organizations(MROs).

At Friday evening’s general session, state reps shared their strategies and results.Everyone is capable of influencing government, MRF president Karen Bolin made an example of Washington State’s last governor’s race, won—by a margin of 129 votes after three recounts —by the candidate that the MRO opposed. “So don’t tell me your vote doesn’t matter,” she said. The SMRO had some success in passing a secured loads law for trucks.

As in most states, leaving the scene of an accident is a crime; in North Carolina, penalties have been increased.

In Colorado, ABATE is working with the Department of Transportation to update the state’s rider education rules. Their Right-of-Way penalty legislation was weakened from license revocation to suspension.

Buckclass

In New York, ROW bills were redrafted to include road users and pedestrians beyond motorcycles, but now face the journey through the country’s slowest legislature.

In Tennessee, like many other states, the government plays fast and loose with designated rider education funds. ABATE is watching closely and fighting for every dollar. They won an exemption to the mandatory helmet law for parades under 30 mph. Tennessee has also sanctioned the use of certain bicycle helmets certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, for use on motorcycles (motorcycle helmets are subject to Dept. of Transportation-NHTSA standards, a separate agency.) Handlebar height restrictions were also removed; Delaware, Kansas, and New York have loosened their laws to shoulder height.

New Hampshire residents had unlimited opportunity to pass a road test after acquiring a 30-day learner’s permit. A new law effective July 1 requires anyone who fails a road test twice to take the state’s rider training course. Effective January 1, 2007, permit applicants must take a written test, similar to other states. NH also now requires a 45-minute motorcycle-awareness module in driver education curriculum.

Ohio currently allows riders over the age of 18 the right to choose helmet use, ABATE helped defeat a bill that would raise the age to 25 and increase penalties for failure to comply.

Wisconsin’s Senate and Assembly Transportation Committee passed Roadway Users Responsibility Act in March. The RURA toughens right-of-way violation penalties; allow motorcycles and bicycles to pass red lights after 45 seconds when sensors don’t recognize them; and mandates motorcycle awareness in driver education. It awaits Governor Doyle’s signature.

Tom Greenbank of Maryland found a loophole in the state’s law that allows him to ride without a helmet legally. The statutes that apply to only antique motorcycles classify a helmet as part of the bike’s equipment, not the rider’s. Tom keeps a copy of the law in his pocket when he rides.

Michigan’s helmet choice bill has been approved by the state senate, but faces a rough ride through the house.

The Massachusetts Motorcycle Association expects their helmet choice bill will become law by July 1.

California joins Florida’s steps at graduated driver’s licensing. There are plenty of practical reasons, but the devil is in the details. The European model is far stricter.

In the two years since the American Motorcyclist Association began the Justice for All campaign, a total of eleven states have passed new legislation. Penalties for drivers convicted of right of way violations that cause serious injury or death have been increased: in OK it’s a fine up to $1,000, In GA, the fine is at least $250, in addition to other penalties. They join Arkansas, Iowa, Maine, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

Buckclass2

MRF president Karen Bolin overviewed the national issues since the highway appropriations bill was passed after two years of delay in July, 2005. The bill includes $25 million in grants for motorcycle education, safety, and awareness programs over the next four years. Contact the MRF to learn how your state can apply, if the money is not spent, it will not be renewed in the next budget cycle. The long-awaited crash study has been funded, and a National Motorcycle Advisory Council has been created. It will be comprised of: a member of a national safety organization, the AMA, MRF, Motorcycle Safety Foundation, a state motorcycle safety administrator, a highway construction expert, two state DOT officials or engineers, and two SMRO members.

The loophole in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act that permits an insurance company to exclude benefits based on source of injury still stands. Keep after your senators and representatives to support S577 and HR2793, all the more important now that the state of Massachusetts just passed a law requiring everyone to have health insurance. The mandated insurance product currently does not exist.

HR2048 is the Right to Repair Act for all motor vehicles. It forbids manufacturers to withhold tools or training from owners or mechanics, current law makes only emissions tools available. If HR2048 does not pass, independent repair shops could eventually be forced out of business.

Gang legislation in both houses does not directly mention motorcycles, but refers to garments and other details too vague to avoid misinterpretation. The House version calls for more educational programs, the Senate version calls for more law enforcement.

The National Highway Safety Administration has been holding quarterly safety meetings; the AMA, MRF, MSF, members of the major manufacturers, law enforcement officials, MROs, and alcohol distributors. They are working to reduce alcohol-related deaths, which are on the rise.

Another disturbing trend—as many as 65% of all rider deaths are from single-vehicle crashes, most involving alcohol. Alcohol (and pharmaceutical drug) advertising in motorsports is still increasing, could there be a connection?

The Environmental Protection Agency issued new emissions rules affecting all motorcycles produced from 2006 forward. United Nations committees are working on international standards (not rules, compliance is voluntary) for emissions. Currently, the European Unions are the most stringent, the United States are the least, and Japan’s standards are in the middle. A new emissions test will be developed, which will force the EPA to reexamine its rules yet again.

Sound regulations are still controversial within the UN, Germany supports the toughest four-part test, roadside enforcement and penalties including confiscation. The US and many others want a two-part test with no post-factory follow-up. A NGO comprised of the AMA, MRF, FEMA, and FIM serves to represent the interest of over 35 million riders. The MRF has received over seven thousand responses to its survey of motorcycle shops. They are still compiling data, so tell your mechanic to log on to MRF.org-links to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=98991669717

Avon Banner

A lengthy discussion on rider education was presented by state directors of Rider Education Dave Galloway(North Carolina) and Jay Jackson(Indiana). Most programs were started by SMROs, who created their funding structure of license and registration fees. The MRF views rider education as a state issue which should not be co-opted a marketing tool for the industry. NHTSA’s own survey of rider training found three of the top five programs in the country are not from the MSF.

The MSF is selling its program, then trying to control its use or threaten to pull certification from the provider. Jackson related how the MSF tried to insist that Colorado, which certifies more than one curriculum, use only the MSF program, then told Oregon to allow other programs besides TEAM OR to operate. Illinois is testing the MSF’s Beginning Rider Course against the TEAM Oregon program for efficacy.

Galloway observed that the most under-served segment of the market is longtime riders who have never had formal training, which accident rates bear out. North Carolina waives regular skill tests if one successfully completes a BRC or an ERC, but this has not increased demand for ERCs. Seems those old dogs don’t want to learn any new tricks. Riders over 40 have more accidents, and returning military personnel have been pushing up the death rate. Takes a different set of skills to survive insurgents than motorcycles.

Honda has developed a motorcycle simulator, the same concept as a cockpit simulator for training. Some instructors fear that factory-sponsored rider training courses would use this as a replacement for riding module, others acknowledged that it could be very helpful as an additional module.

Buck3

As one who must step outside the biker realm with far too much regularity, I’ve found biker’s rights conferences, whether sponsored by one of the national organizations or the SMRO, are far better focused and in general, meatier than professional groups. Yet the level of camaraderie and support is exactly what most bikers would expect of one another…everyone’s eager to share. Motorcycle riders are just two percent of the road users. We’re a pretty small part of the gross domestic product, we don’t generate very much tax revenue and we’re not the richest special interest group in the capitols. But despite the lies, corruption, and incompetence, we still have the most accessible system in the world. We’ve got the precious right to vote, and so much more.
