Got rid of the Big Dog and now I?m working on a ?92 Heritage, adding a sidecar for my new puppy dog. I know it sounds weak, but he loves to ride and the bag he rides in now is only good for short trips.

My other new hotrod is a custom shovel that my friend built. (Same guy that turboed the Big Dog and built the Ironhead motor). That way I can still get my Chopper fix. It is an absolutely beautiful bike, and hauls ass!

Michael Lichter shot it for a spread a couple of years ago at the Denver Easyriders where it won the show, but it has never appeared in any Mags. It has lots of cool stuff including the supposed prototype (my buddy asked for it) of the Baker Frankentranny. Jockey shift with the clutch on the shifter, no front brake, kick only 95ci Shovel, this bike attracts attention wherever it goes. It ain?t no trailer queen either. I ride the shit out of it. It?s a shovel so I am usually covered with oil (breather lubes the chain). But that is the way it is supposed to be?..right? I am including a pic of the bike, but it belongs to Michael Lichter and can?t be used anywhere ON THIS PLANET, except Bikernet and Easyriders.

My buddy made most everything for this bike even though it could be purchased elsewhere.The story is that he called me in Denver the day of the show. I had just had a chemo treatment and was feeling like shit but grabbed my son, braved the snow and crap and went anyway. We walked in and saw this bike spinning up on a dais and I fell in love. We went and found my buddy and I asked, ?So where is your bike??. He pointed to this one, and I knew I had to have it. I know he likes having someone who rides it owning it???and I love owning and riding it.

As an aside; he was at the Rats Hole Show in Sturgis this year with a blue bike he built for Bonneville and the turbo on the bike is mine from the Big Dog.

Winners All at the 6th Annual Sturgis Metzeler Custom Bike Contest–It was a huge success at the 6th Annual Sturgis Metzeler Custom Bike Contest, with dozens of radical customs taking the stage, showing off new trends and wild designs from coast to coast. Metzeler thanks the many builders who showed their bikes and the spectators who showed up for the best show in town. Never a dull moment around Bikernet. I’m headed to the Meeting of the Minds at the end of September. That’s a legislative conference, and I’m on a panel to discuss my projects to make a Bikernet film about Freedom, plus build an industry link between the aftermarket and the motorcycle rights community. Plus, we’ll be discussing a University Study to prove that the EPA is spending money in all the wrong areas, including motorcycles. We’ll also discuss our highly provocative Bikernet Independent Noise Study. Good god.

I spoke to Kirk Willard, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation boss the other day and he threw some interesting facts at me. Did you know that there are about 275,000 members of motorcycle rights groups in this country, yet there are 6 million motorcyclists? More riders need to get involved. Join the motorcycle rights group of your choice, these guys and girls, or as Kim Peterson, the editor of In The Wind magazine would say, “Bros and Broettes,” devote their lives to keeping us free and to manage motorcycle training classes all over the country.

More than likely I’ll fly out for the next NCOM (National Coalition of Motorcyclists) to discuss the same issues next year. Let’s hit the news then I’ll toss out our plans for Sturgis next year which look like a ride that includes the Artic Circle in Alaska. Can it be done on vintage styled bikes? We’ll see.

WELCOME HOME FROM THE BADLANDS, REPORT FROM HIWAY– Welcome home! Sounds like you guys had a rockin’ time. I have fallen completely in love with the maltese cross (and the two objects the crosses were attached to in home page a while back). I would sell a kidney to spend 20 minutes on an army cot with that chick…. haha!

That Billy ride to Sturgis was pretty amazing. I didn’t want to be a nay-sayer, but I saw photos of his flathead and thought, “No fuckin’ way”. The engine must be rock solid. That bike is definitely a sleeper. Hope Mr. Lane is hangin’ in there.

Marc and I were gonna head to Bonneville to see if we could lend a hand somewhere. Had a lead on pit crew for Broken Spoke, but it fell through. I just found out I can’t leave the Bay Area that week anyway, so, done deal. Looking forward to 5-Ball Racing 09!!

No word from Oakland Police regarding their noise study. I resent the cover letter and article, this time with return receipt. Got the receipt back, so someone signed for it (signature illegible). Dropped a couple of calls to the business office number. No one knew anything about it. Said they’d call me back. Never heard from them, and I got busy, so I spaced out following up again. Let me give it one more try. If we don’t get traction this time around, we gotta go show up or something, if you want to keep going after this.

I’m guessing these guys are getting swamped with inquiries from all over the country. My stuff is probably just sitting in a big stack on some cadet’s desk (if it didn’t find its way to the circular file). I’ve seen several articles in industry rags referring to the Oakland noise thing. Hundreds of thousands of people are seeing this stuff. I bet the mailbox is jammed.

Also, I just found a CD with photos I thought I sent you after the wind tunnel visit. My filing system sucks, since it’s just a pile of shit on my desk. I’ll send along the photos soon, along with a scanned in copy of the newspaper article that started the whole noise thing we’re working on. I’ll give OPD a try again. Maybe now that it’s been some time since the article in the SF Chronicle, things are quieting down some.

There’s more talk on the forum about an Alaska trip in ’09. I think this time around I’m gonna give it a shot. Gotta go find me a POS bike that I won’t mind beating the crap out of. Nyla says she wants to drive chase vehicle. Does that mean we’ll also have a Biker, Size XXXL, One Each, riding with us? That’d be a helluva trip.

SCOTT JACOB’S STURGIS REPORT–Although the crowds were down, sales of Scott?s artworks were way up at the Sturgis Rally last week. The primary reason for this success was the new release: IN YOUR DREAMS (below) ?The painting just blew everybody away. Sales of the canvas giclees and canvas lithographs were brisk as Olivia shined in her debut of appearances with her dad. The scheduled autograph sessions drew huge crowds of people (see attached photo) who wanted to meet the ?cover girl? and subject of Scott?s latest masterpiece.

As we gear up for the big Milwaukee gathering this may be your last chance (if you haven?t already) to order ?In Your Dreams? because the edition could easily sell out at Harley?s 105th celebration (note the 105th Anniversary Heritage in foreground making it Scott?s official artwork for the event). KRAWIEC QUALIFIES FOR COUNTDOWN WITH READING RESULTS–Screamin? Eagle Riders Hines and Krawiec in Ringers Pro Bike Battle Field at Indy.

MOHNTON, PA. (August 17, 2008) ? Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec advanced to the second round of eliminations at the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway and secured a spot in the 10-rider Countdown to One, the five-race playoff that will determine the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion. The Countdown begins Sept. 11 at the NHRA Carolina Nationals at Lowe?s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C. Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines has also qualified for the Countdown.

?It?s great to have that slot in the Countdown locked up before the U.S. Nationals,? said Krawiec. ?Now we can go to that big event at Indy without the added pressure of racing to grab one of the last spots.?

Krawiec qualified a Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycle in fourth position at Maple Grove with a 6.943-second run. Hines qualified another V-Rod seventh at 6.972. NitroFish Buell rider Matt Smith was the number-one qualifier with a 6.909-second run, and 10 of the 16 riders who qualified for Sunday eliminations ran under seven seconds.

Sunday turned into a festival of red lights, as six of the eight first-round matches and three of four second-round races were decided when one rider fouled at the start line. Hines was a red-light victim in his first-round race with Geico Suzuki rider Karen Stoffer. Krawiec was on the winning end of a red-light start when his first-round opponent, Rocklin Motorsports Buell rider Matt Guidera, left early. But in round two, it was Krawiec who drew the red light, handing a win to Snap-On Suzuki rider Steve Johnson. For the second week in a row, Smith defeated Rush Racing Products Buell rider Angelle Sampey in the final round to take the event win.

?That was the most red lights I?ve seen at an NHRA event, at least in the last year or two,? said Hines. ?Unfortunately, we were part of it. And while it?s disappointing not to win, the up side is that I feel like we really turned a corner with the bikes this weekend, and we are about to get back to it.?

Hines and Krawiec also locked up positions in the eight-rider Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle, a lucrative bonus event held during qualifying for the Labor Day weekend Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis. The Battle winner will receive $25,000 of a $76,000 total purse.

HARDCORE CUSTOMS SURVIVES STURGIS–It took almost 3 weeks prior the event working 16 hour days on our newest kreation- the one of a kind sidecar project, named “Der Sikkn Seitenwakkn “.

Thanks to Cadillac Bob, Jamison, Billy, Road Devils’ Sean, Jimi, and to the financial help from Pat and Silvia we were able to get it done at the last minute! And of course a big thanks to Aaron and Micah from Kruger Customs for donating the fuel tank!

That’s right. Logan and I made it up to Sturgis Monday morning at 5am; two hours before the Thunderdome’s gates opened for the Horse magazine Bike Show. Logan’s “Hunka Hunka Burning Love” took third place.

The day after, we attended the Old School Chopper Show at the Broken Spoke Saloon with Sean’s “Gold Tooth Pan” and scored first place with both the sidecar and Sean’s bike at the Cycle Source Magazine Bike Show @ Limpnickie Lot where Josh Kurpius shot the sidecar for an upcoming feature in Cycle Source. We had a blast all night drinking with our local friends and hanging out with the cool kids!

The judging at the Rat’s Hole Bike Show sucked big time this year, but we were able to spend most of the day in the air-conditioned Sucker Punch Sallys booth with Andy, Shane and Justin. Thanks to them the wait for the award ceremony at the boring bike show went by quickly.

Sturgis was good to us. We met a lot of cool people in the this year’s smaller crowds (thanks to those ridiculous Gas prices!) and enjoyed staying at the Glenco Campground.

After checking the emails back home we found out that Whiteline Magazine got us on the cover. Check out the cover story there!

The German Custombike Magazine printed a feature of the “B-72” Sportster. That same bike should get featured in one of the next issues of Ironworks Magazine including pictures by Curt Lout and a story by Ken Conte.

So what’s next? First of all Logan and I are getting officially hitched on September 5th., in the shop is another Ironhead Sportster waiting to be done and our first SHK Cadillac powered Hot Rod Project is going in build. Then there’s the Mojave Hardcore Run. There’s also the pictures from the March Meet printed in this month’s issue of Rebel Rodz Magazine .

BUELL CLAIMS OVERALL MOTO-ST WIN AT HEARTLAND PARK–Second Win of 2008 for 1125R.

Topeka, Kan. (Aug. 17, 2008) ? The No. 8 Bruce Rossmeyer?s Daytona Racing Buell 1125R ridden by Shawn Higbee and Michael Barnes took its second overall SunTrust MOTO-ST series and Buell Motorcycle Company SuperSport Twins class wins at the Level 5 Heartland Park 500 presented by Hooters at Heartland Park Topeka on Aug 17.

Despite a four-stop pit strategy that put the Buell squad at a one-stop disadvantage to the No. 75 Touring Sport Ducati 848 ridden by Doug Polen and Ryan Gordon, the No. 8 1125R was able to run a consistently fast enough pace to finish the 119-lap race with a one-minute, 36.262-secoond gap over the second place Ducati.

?Early in the race we were concerned about front tire wear, and couldn?t run a full fuel load on the tires, so we changed our strategy to add another stop,? said Higbee. ?That meant we needed to make up the gap with a faster pace, and we were able to do it.?

The No. 8 narrowly missed claiming pole position the previous day when it failed a post-qualifying dynamometer test by a fraction of a horsepower, giving the position to the No. 1 Aprilia USA/Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Aprilia Tuono 1000R, which subsequently fell to fourth in the final order after a series of crashes. The overall and SST class wins are the second of the 2008 SunTrust MOTO-ST season for the Buell, following its debut win in the series? third round at Road America in June.

In the BMW Motorcycles GrandSport Twins (GST) class, the No. 70 James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing Buell XB12R sponsored by Harley-Davidson/Buell of Appleton and ridden by Paul James, Jeff Johnson and Walt Sipp took third place and slipped from the lead in the GST class standings to second behind the No. 77 Ducati ridden by Frank Shockley and Brad Phillips, which took the class win. After the four rounds, the No. 77 Ducati team moved into first place in the GST Team standings with 156 points, followed by the No. 70 Buell team with 152 and the No. 69 Ducati team with 149.

“We were pleased to extend our podium streak to eight straight in the GST class,” said Paul James. “Having Walt on the team with us was beneficial in developing our setup for Topeka, and he will ride for us again at the New Jersey round in two weeks. This is the home stretch and every point is critical in our chase for the championship.”

On August 9, 2008, a Hell’s Angels Outlaw Motorcycle Gang (OMG) member was shot by an off-duty Seattle, Washington, Police Department officer in Sturgis, SD. The officer was wearing “colors”identifying him as a member of the “Iron Pigs,” a law enforcement motorcycle group. The shooting took place in the Loud American Roadhouse bar at approximately 0100 hours on Saturday morning.

A Grand Jury met on August 13, 2008, and heard testimony from both the Hell’s Angels group and members of the Iron Pigs. During the law enforcement testimony, an “unmarked” passenger van occupied by members of the Hell’s Angels was driving by and surveilling the courthouse. For safety reasons, South Dakota authorities subsequently escorted the Iron Pigs group to the Wyoming state line where Wyoming authorities took over.

Members of the Hell’s Angels OMG are not happy that a police officer put one of their members in the hospital and retaliation may be forthcoming. All law enforcement should be aware of this, especially Seattle police officers and colors-wearing law enforcement motorcycle groups such as the Iron Pigs, Blue Knights, Choirboys, etc.

It is any mid-week evening. Across our great country, we rush home fromwork, clean up and don our best looking riding clothes. We touch up thechrome grab mama and climb aboard. All is smiles because we are going out toour favorite watering hole (or two) for bike night.

We know hundreds of fellow bikers will be there; some, we see daily, otherswe only see on Bike Night. Every make and model will be leaning on the kickstand in the “bikes only” parking area. Bikers and interested spectatorswill be milling around, some discussing the latest engine upgrade, piece ofchrome, paintjob or whatever else grabs their eyes or fancy. Most often along neck is firmly in hand.

The biker babes are always well represented; scant tops, no bra, jeans andboots, ya got to love it. Everyone is having a few drinks, socializing andchilling with our favorite kind of people, bikers. The boys know they willprobably see a tit shot or two before the night is done. The loner at theend of the bar is trying to get lucky with that little woman down the way.He buys her drinks and, gets himself one too. The band is sounding good!

Oh hell, my favorite place is running a “Bike Night” special. Five centwings and one dollar long necks. I'll get two at a time to save the littlewaitress leg work besides; it takes her way to long to get around to mytable. This place needs to hire more help! But, since the beers are socheap, I might as well get a shot to go with it. Hey, there's so and so andthe guys. “Come on over here, I'll buy you a shot.”

The owner of the establishment is working the crowd. He wants to make sureeveryone is having a good time and buying his booze. A little girl in shortshorts and halter top is carrying a tray of jello shooters peddling them toevery biker who meets her eye. She is making a killing. Business is good,bikers are having fun, “We like it!”

The night is late and we go to climb on our bikes to carry our ass home. Weknow we have had too much to drink to ride safely but, we're bikers. We'llbe fine. As we are crossing the “Bikes only” parking area, I stop and help afellow biker pick his machine up off the pavement because he dumped ittrying to exit. No damage, we're good. There he goes. I get to my bike,stand her up, hit the switches and she fires right up. Love that sound!Mama climbs on and I blast off with less than half of the capacity to avoida crash than when I started the evening.

I am lucky. I made it home but my billfold is empty. The establishment ownerfeels good because it was a GOOD night. It was such a good night that he wasinterviewed by the local television and newspaper media about his “magicalplan” to bring business back to my favorite place. He speaks of hiscommitment to bikers and his support of their cause.

Before I climb on mybike to go to work, I turn on the news to get the local scoop. I hear aboutyet another motorcyclist(s) killed in a wreck. No names are given pendingnotification of next of kin. Later that day I hear on the radio that John Q.Biker was the casualty. Emptiness comes into my stomach and I feel nauseas.John Q. is my buddy that I drank with last night.

Many of us need to stop talking out both sides of our mouth. On one hand weare all about our biker rights, safety and awareness and our basic freedoms.On the other we play into the hands of money grabbing business people bysupporting their bike nights at the expense of our very lives. We, the BikerNation, must police ourselves and thereby protect our way of life. If we donot awake to that call, we hand our Liberty to every safety nanny who everthought of “saving a life”.

We make a point to have a garage attached to our make-believe Bandit’s Cantina. If we ever open one for real, it will have a garage to store bikes, when a rider needs to take a cab home. GAS PRICES FUEL RECORD SCOOTER SALESRising fuel prices and recession fears have spurred nationwide interest in motorcycles and scooters, and a new survey indicates more people are considering two-wheelers due to soaring prices at the pump.

PowerSports Business reported in July that first half scooter sales increased by 65 percent, validating a consumer trend towards more fuel efficient transportation. Other sources published similar reports such as The New York Times’, June 6, 2008 article “As Gas Prices Soar, Scooters Grow in Popularity”; and The Wall Street Journal, May 21, 2008 article, “Fuel Efficient Scooter Use Takes Off.” In an August 1, 2008 article in PowerSports Business, Yamaha Motor Co. reported that its U.S. retail motorcycle new unit sales grew 12.4 percent compared to a year ago.

With most motorcycles averaging from 40 to 60 miles per gallon and many scooters averaging up to 100 or more miles per gallon, a lot of people are now interested in acquiring these vehicles for cost-conscious commuting. A recent PowerSports Business article released the results of a survey conducted by Consumer Reports National Research Center indicating that more than one-quarter of U.S. consumers are considering purchasing a motorcycle or scooter. Eighteen percent are thinking of buying a motorcycle while 14 percent are contemplating buying a scooter.

“The era of smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles is upon us,” commented Anthony Havens, CEO of Sparta financial and management services for the powersports industry. “Until recently, motorcycles and scooters were considered the choice of enthusiasts, or people who were just interested in fun and recreation. But, with gas prices dramatically rising, a growing number of consumers are buying motorcycles and scooters for extremely practical reasons.”

?In 1998, there were about 15,000 scooter sales, which represented about 5 percent of all licensable motorcycle sales,? said Mike Mount, a spokesman for the Motorcycle Industry Council. ?In 2007, there were about 131,000 sales, which represents 15 percent of licensable sales.

It might be easy to think scooters and mopeds are only popular among teenage boys itching to get their first taste of the open road, but sales figures indicate that both scooters and mopeds are increasingly being purchased by a maturing demographic. In 1990, the median age for scooter owners was 26, according to a survey conducted by the MIC, but by 2003 the median age jumped to 46.

AMERICANS DRIVING LESS

American driving has reached its eighth month of steady decline, a trend officials say signals an urgent need for new forms of highway financing to supplement the gas tax. New data released by the U.S. Department of Transportation show that, since last November, Americans have driven 53.2 billion miles less than they did over the same period a year earlier — topping the 1970s? total decline of 49.3 billion miles.

Americans drove 4.7 percent less, or 12.2 billion miles fewer, in June 2008 than June 2007, based on vehicle-miles-traveled data collected by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The decline is most evident in rural travel, which has fallen by 4 percent — compared to the 1.2 percent decline in urban miles traveled — since the trend began last November.

As Americans drive fewer miles, less revenue is generated for the Highway Trust Fund from gasoline and diesel sales — 18.4 cents per gallon and 24.4 cents per gallon, respectively. During the first quarter of 2008, motorists consumed nearly 400 million fewer gallons of gasoline, or about 1.3 percent less than during the same period in 2007, and 7 percent less — or 318 million gallons — of diesel.

?We can?t afford to continue pinning our transportation network?s future to the gas tax,? said U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters. ?Advances in higher fuel-efficiency vehicles and alternative fuels are making the gas tax an even less sustainable support for funding roads, bridges and transit systems.?

In California, a Pay-As-You-Go tax surcharge measure has already cleared its first legislative hurdle.

U.S. TRAFFIC DEATHS DROP TO LOWEST LEVEL IN A DECADETraffic deaths in the United States declined last year, reaching the lowest level since 1994, reported the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Some 41,059 people were killed in highway crashes, down by more than 1,600 from 2006. It was the fewest highway deaths in a year since 1994, when 40,716 people were killed.

The fatality rate of 1.37 deaths for every 100 million miles traveled in 2007 was the lowest on record, NHTSA said in its report.

Motorcycle deaths increased for the 10th straight year. There were 5,154 motorcycle deaths last year, compared with 4,837 in 2006.

The increased deaths have come while the number of registered motorcycles has surpassed 6 million, compared with 3.8 million in 1998, and vehicle miles traveled have risen.

Transportation officials said they plan to target motorcyclists in a $13 million anti-drunken-driving advertising campaign running during the Labor Day holiday. The department also has discussed new safety and training standards for novice riders, increased training for law enforcement and curbing counterfeit safety-labeling of helmets.

INCREASING FATALITIES MAKE MOTORCYCLES A TARGETAs more people turn to two-wheel transportation, tripling the number of new motorcycles hitting the road over the past decade, the corresponding increase in motorcycle accidents and fatalities has made motorcyclists a target for stiffer regulations, stricter safety standards and select enforcement.

State and federal officials fear the problem could grow as higher gas prices push more first-time riders toward motorcycling without proper training and licensing. “With gas prices on the increase, more people are riding motorcycles to work,” said South Carolina trooper Lance Cpl. Bob Beres. “They’re not just using them for leisure.”

Most motorcyclists who died during a recent 18-month period studied by the S.C. Highway Patrol either had a beginner’s license or no license at all, and troopers worry that inexperience could put newer riders at greater risk. Of the 99 fatal motorcycle crashes they investigated from July 2006 to December 2007, 36 riders had beginner’s licenses — the same number as those with a regular license. Twenty-five had no license and two had expired licenses.

Motorcycle riders were at fault in about three-quarters of the fatal crashes. The major causes were speeding, failing to yield the right of way and driving under the influence.

The S.C. Highway Patrol was awarded a $75,000 grant to create a Ride Smart safety campaign aimed at motorcyclists, particularly beginning riders.

Law enforcement agencies nationwide are stepping up efforts to curb rising fatalities by targeting motorcycles. As part of a state funded Saving Lives program, the California Highway Patrol conducted a sweep of the 605 freeway looking for motorcyclists not obeying traffic laws, high handlebars and improper helmets, and will be keeping a closer eye on cyclists in highly concentrated areas through the summer.

They ticketed 62 motorcyclists, 21 of which didn’t have a motorcycle license. Officers impounded the 21 bikes.

In Ohio, the Ohio Highway Patrol will reportedly be targeting motorcycle runs and stopping riders to check for sobriety, motorcycle endorsements and loud pipes.

The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) has recently taken the New York State Police and NYS Dept. of Motor Vehicles to task for setting up discriminatory ?Safety Check? roadblocks for motorcyclists en route to large rallies, threatening a class-action lawsuit through Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM), but meanwhile other states are taking similar targeted actions toward motorcycle riders under the pretense of safety concerns.

UTAH ENACTS TIERED LICENSING FOR MOTORCYCLISTSEffective July 8, 2008, Utah will begin using a tiered licensing system for motorcycle endorsements.

– If a rider tests on a 90cc or less motorcycle or scooter they will be restricted to 90cc or less.
– If a rider tests on a 249cc or less motorcycle or scooter they will be restricted to 249cc or less.
– If a rider tests on a 649cc or less motorcycle or scooter they will be restricted to 649cc or less.
– If a rider tests on a motorcycle or scooter larger than 650cc they will be allowed to ride any motorcycle or scooter.

If a rider takes a motorcycle safety class on a 250cc, successful completion will waive the riding part of the license test for an up to 649cc endorsement. To get an endorsement for motorcycles above 649cc riders must use a larger motorcycle in the safety class. To use your own bike in a class you must have a permit, registration, and insurance. If a rider currently rides a motorcycle over 649cc they may obtain a skill test waiver by successfully completing a License Waiver Experienced Rider Course (ERC), a 5 hour course that costs $85.

OKLAHOMA MAY OUTLAW GANGSState Rep. Paul Wesselhoft (R-Oklahoma City) told the Tulsa World newspaper that he wants to outlaw gangs by passing a law to enable gang members to be charged with a misdemeanor, even though he admits that such a law might not pass constitutional muster.

Tim Hock, vice president of the Oklahoma Gang Investigators Association, said he strongly endorses Wesselhoft’s efforts, and that allowing gang members to be charged with a misdemeanor would give officers the means to interrogate them about criminal activity in the community.

Tulsa Police Chief Ron Palmer said, “There are various types of gangs — outlaw motorcycle gangs, white supremacy groups, Asian, Hispanic and African American gangs.” They can be identified by gang names, tattoos and, in some cases, the color of clothes they wear, he said.

But Andrew Spiropoulos, a law professor at Oklahoma City University, said lawmakers “have to be very careful when they legislate gang membership as illegal, because under the First Amendment, a person cannot be prosecuted because they are a member of a group.”

He said a person can be prosecuted only for conduct. “Generally, what states and cities have done is that they usually attack some activity in addition to being a gang member,” he said.

?This is very disturbing news,? relayed Tiger Mike Revere, State Coordinator of ABATE of Oklahoma and member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) board of directors, ?We’ll have to keep a very close eye on this one in Oklahoma, as this type of legislation passed in other states, as in California and Ohio, has been used to directly discriminate against and harass Motorcycle Clubs, and not just 1%ers.?

BAR OWNER ACCUSES POLICE OF DISCRIMINATING AGAINST HER PATRONSA Green Bay, Wisconsin bar owner says the police department is discriminating against her because of her clientele. Kim VandenBusch says 75 percent of the regulars at Kimmers Bar & Grill are members of a motorcycle club.

Last week the city granted the owner a liquor license with a unique stipulation. The police department asked her to hang a sign in the bar that says “No club colors,” referring to the back patches worn by motorcycle club members.

“I was very much under duress on signing that because they said if I didn’t sign it I wouldn’t get my license,” VandenBusch told WBAY-TV, adding that it’s unfair because the bar has a good track record with the police department. “I felt it was very wrong. I felt it was discriminating. It should be up to the owner of the establishment to decide what clientele they want.”

But the police department has every right to do this. Last year the city passed an ordinance that says every establishment wanting a liquor license must first have its business plan approved by the police department.

Police Captain Bill Galvin said, ?There can be fights, shootings, drug dealing, drug usage, things like that occurring at places where these gang members hang out.”

Galvin says putting up a simple sign will eliminate potential problems, but VandenBusch hasn’t put one up yet. Instead, she’s appealing to the Protection and Welfare Committee.

LOS ANGELES CHRISTIAN CLUB GONE WRONG–The leader and members of the Set Free Soldiers are accused of attempted murder in a Newport Beach brawl with the Hells Angels, three of whom are also in custody.

Long controversial for its aggressive evangelism aimed at those with a troubled past — ex-convicts and drug addicts among them — the Anaheim-based Christian motorcycle gang known as the Set Free Soldiers found itself in deeper trouble Wednesday when its leader and half a dozen members were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The arrests, which followed a double stabbing in a brawl with the Hells Angels at a Newport Beach bar July 27, was the latest brush with the law for the group of black-leather-clad bikers, which has straddled the line between Christian outreach group and outlaw motorcycle gang.

By late Wednesday, authorities had arrested 10 members of the Set Free Soldiers and the Hells Angels during raids in Anaheim, Costa Mesa and Rancho Santa Margarita that started at 5 a.m., said Sgt. Evan Sailor of the Newport Beach Police Department.

The operation involved more than 150 officers, including SWAT teams and federal drug enforcement agents.

Seven members of the Set Free Soldiers, including leader Phil Aguilar, 60, have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and are each being held on $1-million bail, police said.

Three members of the Hells Angels are also in custody, including John Phillip Lloyd, a 41-year-old Costa Mesa man charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The other two were arrested on drug charges.

Others are still being sought on arrest warrants.

The arrests stemmed from a 15-person brawl at the Newport Beach bar Blackie’s by the Sea, where Set Free members allegedly stabbed two Hells Angels members.

During the brawl, the Hells Angels also allegedly struck one of the Set Free members in the head with a pool ball.

On its website, which appeared to have been taken down Wednesday evening, Set Free Soldiers call themselves “a group of men who love Jesus and love to ride hard.”

“We are not your normal motorcycle club,” the statement reads. “Some say we are too good for the bad guys, and too bad for the good guys.”

Aguilar, a Harley-riding ex-convict and former drug addict who served time for child abuse in the 1970s, converted to Christianity in prison. He became the founding pastor of Set Free Worldwide Ministries in 1982. But he and his ministry have been highly controversial.

His MySpace.com page describes Aguilar as pastor or “the Chief” of the group. Next to his photo is the statement: “Sinner or Saint you be the judge!”

Police said that through its ministry, the gang recruited people discharged from parole, state prison and county jails and has an outreach program for convicted felons.

Although Set Free has been praised for its streetwise approach; its detractors say it is an autocratic organization that exerts too much control over its members by confiscating their belongings and forcing them to break off relationships with friends and families.

Law enforcement officials and former members say that the group has devolved into a motorcycle gang like any other, and that it has ties to the Mongols, an outlaw biker gang that has engaged in warfare with the Hells Angels.

Set Free chapters in the Midwest have provided security at Mongol funerals, said Steve Cook, an Independence, Mo., police officer and president of the Midwest Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Investigators Assn.

“It is an outlaw club,” Cook said. “Their supposed Christian affiliation doesn’t change my opinion.”

A former Set Free member said Aguilar has performed Mongol weddings and officiated at their funerals. The man, who asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation, said he left the group about five years ago when Aguilar began taking the church in a new direction and started recruiting tattooed bikers. Some members carry guns, he said.

“Phil always wanted to be somebody in the outlaw biker world, and he’s been hiding behind the cross for a long time,” the former member said. “When he began recruiting members, he figured the badder they were the better.”

YARD CAMPING IN STURGIS– For 20 bucks a night, homespun hospitality draws world crowd.

STURGIS — Even though Dee Fowlkes of Sturgis can see from his front door onto Junction Avenue that overall rally traffic is down, he said that the number of people camping in his yard is up 30 percent to 40 percent from last year.

“I thought it was going to be very slow, but campground wise, this year is up for me,” he said. “This year has been very good; the campground has surprised me on how many people have actually stopped in this year.”

But not everybody who rents tent space or bedroom space during rally week is having the same luck as Fowlkes.

Mike Petrocco said his numbers are down this year by 50 percent. He has been renting tent space in his yard at 1320 Junction for the past 10 years and said the low numbers are due to high gas prices and the fact that some of his annual campers are getting older and not returning this year.

“I thought it was going to be down. I talked to people at the campgrounds, and they said they were 30 to 40 percent down from last year; there are hotel rooms open, too,” Petrocco said.

Fowlkes said his ex-wife started renting out bedrooms and tent space 20 years ago, and he took over by himself 10 or 12 years ago.

He has never had to advertise, and he also said he has never had to turn anybody away. Fowlkes said people hear about him through world of mouth, referrals, or see his “Beds N Tents” sign out in his front lawn.

“All hours, day and night, they straggle in. They will see the sign; they will ask these people sitting in the front yard, ask them a few questions, and then come on in and find me,” he said.

This summer is the second rally that Angi Bergman has lived on Junction; she took over for the previous owner’s camping rentals. She said she didn’t know where all of the bikers would stay if it weren’t for the people who rented out their houses and yards.

Bergman said she has about 17 people camping and an additional five people staying in bedrooms in their house. For $20 per person per night, Bergman said the campers have tent space, a porta-potty and a shower in the garage.

“I enjoy it. It’s fun, and we have bikes, so we get involved,” Bergman said. “I just like to meet the people.”

Fowlkes said he has met people from all over the world through renting tent space and bedroom space. He has three bedrooms, a bunkhouse and sometimes uses the basement for barracks-style housing, plus the tents set out outside.

“I like the people, people from all over the world. Every year, we get people from a different country,” Fowlkes said. “Bikers have such camaraderie; they meet people here from last year. They just cannot wait to get back to see those people, and of course, the landlord has a little tiny bit to play with that part.”

KILL A BIKER, GO TO JAIL– In May, ABATE got a letter from a Kathy Paddack who lost her son Timothy Bennett, in a left turn motorcycle crash and was looking for someone to help her persuade the judge in the case to pass a meaningful sentence in the case. The crash happened at 5 p.m. on Nov. 1, 2005. Tim was traveling west on Hwy 82 and the defendant, traveling east on 82 turned her pick-up truck left into a tavern parking lot directly into his path. She went into the tavern to call for help and then returned outside, where another person was already rendering aid to Tim, so she helped direct traffic until emergency personal arrived on the scene.

When the Marquette County officer interviewed her, both she and her husband claimed that he was the driver at the time of the crash, not her. That being the case there were no tests performed on her to see if she had been drinking. (She has since had an OWI conviction for another incident.) When the Sheriff?s office finally determined that she was in fact the driver they forwarded that information to the District Attorney who then filed ?hit and run resulting in a death? charges, against both her and her husband.

The judge dismissed the case because the defendants did not flee the scene, they had ?only obstructed justice? by not identifying her as the driver and he did not believe hit and run was the right charge. The DA followed up by taking the case to the Appeals Court. The Appeals Court decided the charges were appropriate because in their opinion it is the duty of the driver to identify himself or herself as the driver. The Appeals Court ordered the judge to hear the case. The defendant?s lawyer then appealed that decision to the Supreme Court, which refused to hear it, so the Appeals Court decision stood.

The case did not have to go to trial because the defendant (her husband had died of cancer) came to a plea agreement with the DA. This was about the time that Kathy found out about ABATE from a Share the Road placemat and sent in her letter requesting help. I spoke with Kathy and we decided that we would do what we could to help influence the judge. Having never worked with the courts before, Greg Rodd, Chubby and I put together a plan of attack. Wanting a professional opinion, I sent our plan to Attorney Mike Hupy for his opinion and suggestions on how to proceed.

Mike reviewed our plan with me in several phone calls and then sent it to the Public Relations firm he works with and requested they start looking at this. Several days later they replied with a plan very close to what we had drafted and included a price of $1,000 to $1200 for the work. I replied to Mike that I would need to get BOD (board of directors) approval for that expenditure. In a return email, Mike said that ?Hupy and Abraham S. C. would pay for the PR involvement.? This was completely unexpected, but much appreciated. This started a flurry of emails between the PR firm, Chubby, Mike and I reviewing opinion pieces and possible releases and alerts to the local media.

Kathy provided the contact information for me to talk with the Victim?s Advocate in the DA?s office to get her take on what was happening. She suggested that it would be helpful if several ABATE Officers would be able to speak at the sentencing. With the sentencing being July 9th there was time for a discussion with some of the members of 2J, Adams and Marquette Counties at the Hummer. Bruce Hall, Region Rep for 2J, agreed to speak along with Chubby and myself. Arrangements were made with the DA for the three of us to make statements and we were set to go.

The day before the sentencing we received word that the Portage paper was sending a reporter and wanted to talk to someone from ABATE and that the Marquette County paper had published the opinion piece with Mike Hupy?s name on it. This was a result of the work of the PR firm. The morning of the hearing there were 13 ABATE members in the hall outside the courtroom along with Tim?s parents and the Victim?s Advocate from the DA?s office. The local Sheriff and two of his deputies joined us. He introduced himself and thanked us for showing up to help make a difference. He went over the rules of the court, no weapons or outbursts of emotion. He offered to hold any weapons we may have and told to contact one if his deputies if we needed anything.

At the appointed time, we filed into the small Marquette County courtroom. Between those of us from ABATE and Tim?s family we took up most of the seats. We got to see the judge in action as he sentenced defendants in several other cases before ours was called. When our case was called he started by berating the DA for not bringing the right charges. When it came time for me to speak on behalf of the victim, the judge erupted again because ?there was no victim here?. The DA argued that the victim was not in court because he had been killed. When the judge finally settled down, I was allowed to proceed. That is until one of our members (?thanks? Mary) took a picture and set him off about that. At least he seemed to take an interest in my statement when I got to the part about personal responsibility and how it applied to his case. He even had several comments and questions when I was done.

Chubby was next and he focused on the toll Right-of-Way violations took statewide last year and the need to do something about them. Bruce got to play clean-up and fill in where we had missed. When the judge asked him what ABATE stood for and Bruce told him A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments he kicked back in his chair an gave us a ?thumbs up?.

We were followed by Tim?s mother; she gave a very powerful statement that made many eyes in the court wet. Then it was time for the DA to give his final speech, along with his recommendation for a sentence, 12 years in prison, with the last 5 to 7 being parole. The defense attorney got the last chance to speak.

To the judge?s credit when he tried to bring up the fact that Tim may have had intoxicants in his system at the time of the crash, the judge cut him off, as that had no bearing on the defendant turning in front of him. He asked that the sentence be no more than one year in the Adams County jail with work release. He wanted Adams County instead of Marquette County because that would make it easier for the defendant to find a ride to work.

When the judge was ready to pass sentence he again admonished the DA because all he felt he could sentence the defendant on was the obstruction part of the charge. He did quote some of the responsibility statements I had made so I know he was paying attention. The final outcome was one year in the Marquette County jail with work release privileges, including credit for time already served.

I would like to thank everyone who helped with this effort, Mike Hupy for being a sounding board and for hiring the PR firm, Chubby for shutting his business down for the day and coming up from the Milwaukee area, Bruce, and the folks for 2J for taking a day off from work, and Bill Roberge and Rick Mellon for traveling from the west side of the state to just be there. This was a learning experience for all of us and we intend to pull this knowledge together and spread the knowledge to the Regions for all of ABATE to use. As long as drivers keep violating our right-of-way, we need more headlines that read, ?Woman to serve jail time in Motorcycle fatality?.

We have heard the cry of less people at ever rally and we have done better than ever thanks to all of you coming by. Mass numbers are down, QUALITY people stopping in is up! What an honor to be on Main Street Sturgis for my daughter Karlee?s first visit at 14 and hear her say, ?He?s rockin the Flare!? That is slang for using the performance windshield on your bagger! After 33 years of attending the event since age 8, it was a very humbling experience to see many utilizing our technology to make your bikes handle better. As many of you heard, Laura?s dad, Dave, was involved in a motorcycle accident in which someone did a U-turn in front of him and their bikes collided. He is currently in the Rapid City hospital with a broken leg and crushed ankle. We ask that you keep him in your prayers as well as the other gentleman involved. Accidents are constant reminders of precious time and where our values lie ? let us be thankful!

Speaking of thankful, Sturgis is such an opportunity for all of our staff to be involved and participate. It was an honor to meet Malcolm Smith during his induction into the Sturgis Hall of Fame along with the other inductees, including two amazing women riders. I was thankful Laura and her father got to participate in a Michael Lichter photo shoot and ride organized by Jay Allen of the Broken Spoke. Thankful that Joe and Michelle got to ride with Chris from Cycle Source. Thankful that we all got to see old friends and made new ones. Thankful for the events our Krew could participate in and thankful to hear from all of you there who stopped to say Hi!

NEW BOOK JUST RELEASED, A Road Without End, The JUS BROTHERS,Motorcycle Club, 1990-2007– …..Michael Patrick McCusker, known tohis friends as Irish Mike, is a very interestingfellow. He married his high school sweet-heart, Debbie, and after all these years, he isstill very devoted to her. Mike worked tele-communications in California for 32 yearsbefore retiring while in his mid-50’s and movingto Carson City, Nevada.

In 1990, Mike foundedthe JUS BROTHERS M/C. In the beginning,this was a small, tight group of guys who wantedto ride and who shared the same interests andvalues. But the club has been very succesful,and it has grown considerably.

Mike said, “Wewere fortunate to pick up some very talented anddedicated Brothers over the years that have con-tributed a great deal to further the club to whereit is today.” And where it is today is four chaptersstrong.

You may also recognize Mike’s name fromTHUNDER PRESS. He has a talent for writing, and you have sometimes seen his articles as aRepeat Offender. A few years ago, Debbie devel-oped fibromyalgia and became disabled. Mikesaid that his 400-mile round trip rides to take careof club business and the need to stay home to carefor his wife stretched him too thin. So, after 17 years, he retired from JUS BROTHERS. At the urging of another long-term club member, Mikebegan to write a book outlining the beginning, thehistory, the how, where, and why of the club. Ittook about a year to finish the first draft, and aftermany rewrites, changes and editing, he put hispen down and said, “That’s it.”

The book is entitledA Road Without End, The JUS BROTHERS Motor-cycle Club, 1990 – 2007. Mike says the language isauthentic and on the rough side, but he doubts thetype of readers it will attract will be offended. Itis also loaded with photographs. The book is beingpublished by Publish America and should be avail-able soon. Their website is PublishAmerica.com,and Mike says he always welcomes e-mail atjusbrotherirish@yahoo.com. 3rd Annual Builders Breakfast Raises Thousands for Make A Wish On Tuesday, August 5th, over twenty renowned motorcycle Builders joined forces to raise money for South Dakota Make A Wish Foundation —Minneapolis, MN ? (August 6, 2008) ? After wrapping up the 3rd Annual Builders Breakfast in Sturgis Tuesday, the event is deemed a success by both the Builders and Make A Wish of South Dakota. With an anticipated lighter crowd at Sturgis this year, the Builders Breakfast was not sure what to expect from an attendance perspective. To combat the negative press about projected attendance, over 20 participating Builders came together with an idea to keep the Builders Breakfast running full steam ahead.

?This event has become a mainstay for me and my buddies in the industry. How many times can we get together, have a great time and raise tons of money for children? Not many? explained Builder Rick Fairless. ?Smaller crowds shouldn?t equate to less money or lessened interest in a charity like Make A Wish? finished Fairless. With that ?can-do? spirit in mind, the event planning team quickly adjusted its plans and requested donations in lieu of the standard ticket fee.

Additionally, the event gathered up amazing auction items. Each signed by all of the Builders resulting in a successful silent auction held the morning of the event.

The event raised thousands of dollars for the South Dakota Make A Wish foundation. Final numbers will be announced upon reconciliation of the silent auction, but early indicators show the two hour silent auction raised around $5,000 alone. ?Our crowd was down this year, but our spirits were high as well as our commitment to the cause. No one does this to get paid or to earn recognition; we do it because we want to help. We will continue to host this event at Sturgis and Daytona as long as the people choose to support the cause? said event originator Darcy Betlach.

Also coming out of the Sturgis event, two new sponsors pledged their support to 2009 events and beyond: Pink Partz? and IronWorks Magazine. Pink Partz, a newcomer to the scene with lots of big announcements coming soon and IronWorks Magazine.

BIKERNET TECH QUESTION– I got a question for ya. I just finished putting together a Bobber style bike with a Shovelhead motor 1979 80 ci. Why does the front exhaust pipe Blue badly and not the rear?

The motor was sent out and punched out to 96 ci with an Andrews A grind cam.

The ignition was updated with a Crane Hi 4 single fire.

This motor come out of a 1979 FXS that I rode the hell out of few years ago. The set of drag pipes I had then blued badly in the front as well.

Any sugestions?

First look at the plugs. See if the front one is running hotter than the rear (gray to white). How does it idle? Then check the intake manifold for leaks. Get the bike running and spray WD40 around the intake. If the idle changes, you have a leak. Make sure both plugs are the same heat range and finally, adjust the valves. Let me know if one of these things corrects it. –Wrench

BILANSKY AND DELK PUT BUELL ON ASRA PODIUM AT BARBER– First Pro Thunderbike National Podium for Delk; Sipp Crashes out of Second

LEEDS, ALA. (August 10, 2008) ? Hal?s H-D/Buell/Hal?s Speed Shop rider Dan Bilansky rode a Buell XB12R to second place in the ASRA Pro Thunderbike National at Barber Motorsports Park. Roanoke Harley-Davidson/Buell rider James Delk was third on a Buell XB12R to take his first ASRA Pro National podium position. The race was won by Nate Kern on a BMW.

Only five riders made the start of the eight-lap Thunderbike National on the 2.38-mile Barber road course. Kern took the lead at the green flag with Bison Racing/Eagle H-D/Buell rider Walt Sipp and Bilansky in close pursuit. Sipp was in second place when he lost the front end and crashed out of the race on lap four. Kern then stretched his lead over Bilansky and Delk and was not challenged for the rest of the race. Ray Price Harley-Davidson/Buell rider Carl Reid was fourth on a Buell XB12R. Sipp was not awarded fifth-place points because his motorcycle was too badly damaged to run for a post-race dyno test.

Several of the regular Thunderbike series riders were unable to be at the Barber race, including the defending Thunderbike champion, Deeley H-D/Buell Canada/Ruthless Racing rider David Estok, who was committed to race in Canada this weekend.

After six of eight events on the 2008 ASRA Thunderbike schedule, Kern leads the series with 197 points, followed by Estok with 132 points, Sipp with 115, and Bilansky with 110 points.

The next stop on the ASRA Pro Thunderbike schedule is the Summer?s End Cyclefest, September 5-7, at Summit Point Motorsports Park, Summit Point, W.V.

I’d classify ’08 as one of the best Black Hills Rallies ever for me and I’ve talked with enough people to know I’m not alone in that. I guess we’ll see how it all shakes down.

The fact is that the Rat’s Hole Show’s judging pissed me off so bad that we decided to pack up and head back home. HINES HOLDS ON TO NHRA POINTS LEAD AT BRAINERD NATIONALS–Countdown Slot Secure, Hines Racing to Gain Leader?s Bonus Points.

BRAINERD, MINN. (August 10, 2008) ? With a spot in the Countdown to One season championship playoff already in hand, Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines advanced to the second round of eliminations at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. Hines also maintained his lead in NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle season points.

Hines, who posted a 7.022-second run aboard a Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycle to be the sixth-fastest qualifier for Sunday eliminations, defeated Matt Guidera in the first round before fouling at the start line to lose to Angelle Sampey on the Rush Racing Products Buell in the second round.

Hines battled to the final eliminations round at the Fram/Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway on July 27 and earned enough points to secure in a spot in the 10-rider Countdown, a five-race playoff to determine the Pro Stock Motorcycle champion that will begin following the finals of the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis on August 1.

?It?s great to be locked in for the Countdown, and this season there?s a 30-point bonus for the points leader when the Countdown rounds begin, so I?d like to hold that lead,? said Hines. ?We just felt like we were a little behind in everything this weekend, and the bike was down on power in the first portion of the track. We have historically run strong at the later races in the season, so I think if we are in the top three after Indy we?ll be in good shape.?

Eddie Krawiec rode a Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines V-Rod to the fifth qualifying spot with a 7.021-second pass, but then lost at the line to Mike Berry in the first round with a 0.141-second reaction time and a 7.037 ET to Berry?s 0.029/7.129 run.

?I just lost my focus for an instant on the line and it was over,? said Krawiec, who is one of four riders battling for fourth place in the Pro Stock Motorcycle points race. ?There is still room for a lot of movement in the standings, and it?s not out of the question for us to move up to fourth before the Countdown. I?m looking forward to Reading, where I made the semi-finals last year.?

The Brainerd event was won by NitroFish Buell rider Matt Smith after Sampey?s motorcycle broke at the starting line in the final round. The win moves Smith to within 12 points of Hines in the season standings.

After 10 rounds of the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Hines leads the Pro Stock Motorcycle class with 816 points. Smith is in second place with 804 points, followed by Chip Ellis with 717 points, Chris Rivas with 606, Guidera with 595 and Krawiec in sixth place with 588. Hines, Smith and Ellis have secured a slot in the Countdown to One championship playoff series.

NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycles will race next August 14-17 at the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pa.

We’re back. We survived Sturgis 2008. The reports are flowing in, but I feel odd about mine. Damn, I’m a trailer Queen. How do I write that? I’ll pour Jack Daniels down my throat and see what spills on my stained computer.

I want to thank everyone who helped with the Brouhaha. We had over 60 bikes and the attendance was terrific. Edge, Nyla, Dar, Ray, Barb, Carrie, Lynn, Bob, Jeff and the entire gang did a helluva job and Jeff and Sydney captured every move digitally.

World Championship of Custom Bike Building 2008 – RESULTS–Goldammer Crowned World Champion again!–After three and a half days of competition the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building has drawn to a close. What began over a year ago with a series of 12 Affiliate shows, covering four continents and an estimated over 2,000 competitors, has culminated at the pinnacle of motorcycling’s Holy Grail, Sturgis, South Dakota. This year’s OWC has been held at Champions Hall in the heart of Sturgis, South Dakota. Since the opening of the hall on Sunday morning, thousands upon thousands of spectators have poured over the 68 motorcycles, which represent 13 different countries.

People from all walks of life, from local residents to industry insiders, to the builders themselves, have spent many hours studying various aspects of the bikes, which represent the highest level of motorcycle craftsmanship and fabrication in the world.

The competition was divided into four different classes, Metric, Modified Harley-Davidson, Production, and the creme de la creme, the Freestyle Class.

The awards ceremony began promptly at 3:00 pm CST with master of ceremony Chris McGee keeping the packed hall of anxious competitors and spectators entertained. With each winner being announced the anticipation level grew and grew.

Before getting to the class winners McGee announced the winners of the Partners Picks of Excellence.

I am including their paid single copy sales for the first half of 2007 and the most recent period – 2008 if they are audited by ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulation).

Please note, that, in spite of a 4.6% sales dip on the newsstand, American Iron Magazine continues to lead the category in copies sold and it suffered the smallest decrease in sales.

I note V-Twin and Hot Bike have lost roughly a quarter of their readers on the newsstand in the last year. I also note most of the smaller circulation Harley-oriented magazines are either not ABC audited or failed to report their sales to ABC.

WHY DON’T MANUFACTURES POST THIS ON THE OVENS? Microwaving Water! A 26-year old man decided to have a cup of coffee. He took a cup of waterand put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had donenumerous times before). I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but hewanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, heremoved the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he noted that thewater was not boiling, but suddenly the water in the cup ‘blew up’ into hisface. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand , but allthe water had flown out into his face due to the build up of energy. Hiswhole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his facewhich may leave scarring.

He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye. While at the hospital,the doctor who was attending to him stated that this is a fairly commonoccurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. Ifwater is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup todiffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc., (nothingmetal).

It is however a much safer choice to boil the water in a tea kettle.

Thanks for contacting us, I will be happy to assist you. The e-mail that youreceived is correct. Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubblewhen they reach the boiling point. They can actually get superheated and notbubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out of the cup when itis moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag is put into it.

To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat any liquidfor more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup stand in themicrowave for thirty seconds! before moving it or adding anything into it

Here is what our local science teacher had to say on the matter: ‘Thanks forthe microwave warning I have seen this happen before. It is caused by aphenomenon known as super heating. It can occur anytime water is heated andwill particularly occur if the vessel that the water is heated in is new, orwhen heating a small amount of water (less than half a cup).

What happens is that the water heats faster than the vapour bubbles canform. If the cup is very new then it is unlikely to have small surfacescratches inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form. As thebubbles cannot form and release some of the heat has built up, the liquiddoes not boil, and the liquid continues to heat up well past its boilingpoint.

What then usually happens is that the liquid is bumped or jarred, which isjust enough of a shock to cause the bubbles to rapidly form and expel thehot liquid. The rapid formation of bubbles is also why a carbonated beveragespews when opened after having been shaken.’

GREG WELD, FOUNDER OF WELD WHEEL INDUSTRIES, R.I.P.– GREG Weld, the driving force behind Weld Racing, has passed away at the age of 64.Weld began his career in sprint car races, winning over 100, including the 1963 Knoxville Nationals, the premiere event in sprint car racing, as well as the USAC National Sprint Car Championship at the age of 23.

After retiring from racing he founded Weld Wheel Industries in 1970, starting the business with $2,300 he’d saved from racing with the simple idea of making sprint car wheels that performed better. He went on to manufacture forged alloy wheels for various vehicles, including racecars, and was an active sponsor of the United States Auto Club series, NHRA and IHRA. In January 2007, Greg started a new company, Greg Weld Competition Wheels.

Weld was honored during his life and was inducted into numerous Halls of Fame including the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1998. “Greg Weld was a visionary in the Motorsports industry. Guidepoint Systems Launches Redesigned Stolen Vehicle Tracking System for Motorcycles–PONTIAC, Michigan – August 13, 2008 – Guidepoint Systems today announced the launch of a newly designed unit for its stolen vehicle tracking system for motorcycles. If a stolen motorcycle is not located within 24 hours, the company will reimburse the customer for the purchase price of his or her system, up to $1,000. STURGIS SHOOTOUT IN DOWNTOWN– A shootout in a downtown Sturgis bar over the weekend has a member of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang hospitalized after he was shot at the Loud American Roadhouse. Sturgis Police are being tight-lipped about the situation. Officials say that’s because they want to ensure public safety because the cases involved gangs.

Police have confirmed that the man accused of shooting the Hells Angel is a member of the Iron Pigs, a biker gang open to law enforcement and fire officials. The suspect in the case is a police officer from Seattle, Washington. A spokesperson there says five officers are now off duty pending the results of the investigation in Sturgis. Right now, that investigation still has a lot of unanswered questions.

Details are still being sorted out, but Sturgis Chief of Police Jim Bush says his department was called to the Loud American Roadhouse shortly after 1 o’clock on Saturday morning. When officers arrived, they found one man with gunshot wounds and a man they believe fired the shots.

“The person that was shot was involved with the motorcycle gang the Hells Angels and the other person who did the shooting was a member of the Iron Pigs and is a law enforcement officer,” Jim Bush says.

Bush says these men were among hundreds in the bar at the time of the incident– he estimates between 400 and 500 people were escorted into the street before police could begin their investigation.

“Each and every one of them had to be identified and taken out of the scene and we had to define whether they were witnesses, or suspects, or whatever they might be, so it was quite a cumbersome process so it took a lot of manpower to get that done,” Bush says.

Despite being sworn to uphold the law, the man Sturgis police believe fired the shots *did break a law by having his gun inside the bar.

“There’s a South Dakota statute that disallows anyone to carry a concealed weapon into a licensed business for alcoholic beverages or malt beverages,” Bush says.

That’s one law that police can confirm was broken– but Bush says a full list of charges won’t likely be available until investigations are complete and information is given to a Grand Jury. The case has been turned over to the Meade County State’s attorney.

Bush says witnesses were interviewed for hours on Sunday in hopes that those from out-of -state wouldn’t need to come back for the trial.

Loud American co-owner Dean Kinney and he says that his customers have told him they see it as an unfortunate but isolated incident. He says his business over the weekend following the fight was actually higher than it was a year ago.

SOUTH DAKOTA Officer Arrested On Drug Charges–A Watertown police officer has been arrested on drug charges.

Officer Jesse Compton was arrested Sunday on three counts of misdemeanor possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and ingesting.

Compton has worked for the Watertown Police Department for five years, and was currently one of the police department?s two drug dog handlers. Compton was suspended without pay, but has since resigned.

Sara Rabern in the South Dakota attorney general’s office said Watertown police asked the Division of Criminal Investigation to come and investigate.

THE STURGIS WRAP–But more news and reports are forthcoming. We aren?t sequestered in the Deadwood jail anymore. We need to spread our wings for greater horizons news wise, such as White Horse Press just released a book on the 25 year history of Buell. Hell, I remember when H-D bought the company. It covers Eric’s design and race history.

In a recent European race three vehicles competed including a Corvette, a Hayabusa and a concept enclosed motorcycle, Mono Tracer. The race took the contestants from Munich, Germany to Berlin. The Tracer won the 387-mile race with just a 115 horse 1171 cc BMW engine, against the 400 horse Vette, and the 197 horse Hyabusa.

I recently stumbled into a Beverly Hills Ducati Dealership while helping a brother revive his monster Ducati. I was blown away to find $45,000 ducks, a Confederate tried to compete for floor space against a $75,000 DB7 Bimoto. Talk about a crazy looking motorcycle. Get this; it’s powered by a Ducati 1098cc Testastretta Evoluzione engine. It weighs 379 pound and pumps our 90 ft. pounds of torque and 160 horses at 9750 rpm. The ultimate road racer, it smacks of a hybrid Ferrari.

The Motorcyclist Advisory Council is conducting a survey on road conditions from the motorcyclist viewpoint. If you want to step up, go to www.surveymonkey.com/MACMembersHighwaySurvey. It will ask you where you ride and to describe the conditions of the roads. And finally, Buell announced a recall of 2008 1125R models. These vehicles might experience fifth gear galling on the clutch shaft due to lack of lubrication. It can force the gear to seize and stick to the shaft and lock up the rear wheel. There continues to be a lot of discussion about the future of our industry as bikers, shop owners, and manufacturers struggle to deal with the new emissions restrictions from the EPA. We have another opportunity to continue our way of life, by starting a state-by-state legislative movement.

My primary concerns remain finding a solution that will keep all the aftermarket engine manufacturers like Flathead Power, R&R, Enginuity, etc in business, and individual builders, at home and in shops, free to build and ride classic choppers.

SEMA in its effort to grandfather Kit cars and other customs crafted a bill that creates two new classes of car to be titled and registered: Street Rods and Custom Vehicles. The law states that vehicles will be titled and registered by the year the body most closely resembles. This helps the county treasurers/titling and registration officials determine how to title and register the vehicle while offering flexibility to the owner. The bill includes kit cars or newly manufactured customs, such as ‘65 cobra replica resembles an actual ‘65 cobra and is therefore titled and registered as a ‘65 cobra custom vehicle.

Also the same regulations i.e. exhaust, safety equipment apply to the kit car as apply to an original ‘65. The concession offered for this privilege is that the vehicles must be temporary use vehicles, or basically cannot be used for “general daily transportation.” This really doesn’t affect the way most people use custom vehicles.

Applying this idea to the motorcycle industry works with the one distinguishing feature of any bike, by attaching a style to its engine/drivetrain. I’m currently drafting language to state that custom motorcycles will be titled by the year that their engine most closely resembles. This would allow a range of years for people choosing to use legacy designs (or reproductions) like flatheads, Knuckles, Pans, Shovels, Evos, etc.

All of these engines were in use prior to 2006. As legacy designs they are not meant to meet the new EPA tier 1 or 2 emissions regimes. As with SEMA’s bill the concession in my new bill would again state that these customs: “Will be maintained for occasional transportation, rallies, club activities, parades, tours, exhibitions, and other similar uses and will not be used for general daily transportation.” This probably wouldn’t change the way many custom owners use their bikes, and for those who are daily riders, they still have the option to get an EPA certified engine.

That’s a quick rundown on my current plan for the next legislative session in MT which convenes in January. Again, my goal is to create a solution that is easy to implement and follows the logic of SEMA’s street rod bill which has met with great success in a growing number of states. I’m still working through the details and would be grateful to receive the thoughts of bikers, shop owners, manufacturers and anyone with a stake in our industry. My goal is to create a model that will serve the needs of our way of life for years to come.

FYI I currently serve as chairman of SEMA’s legislative caucus that organizes state legislators across the U.S. and remain very involved in their titling and registration efforts. I am also a SEMA member.

Model Custom Motorcycle (example) Bill

Vehicle Laws – Custom Motorcycle

(a) A custom motorcycle means any motorcycle that:

(1) Contains an engine manufactured 20 years prior to the current calendar year or contains an engine manufactured to resemble an engine 20 or more years old; and

(2) Has been altered from the manufacturer’s original design; or is constructed in whole or in part from non-original materials.

(b) The model year that is listed on the certificate of title of a custom motorcycle shall be the model year that the engine of such vehicle resembles.

(c) For each custom motorcycle, there shall be a one-time registration fee of $_____.

(d) (1) in applying for registration of a custom motorcycle under this section, the owner of the custom motorcycle shall submit with the application a certification that the vehicle for which the application is made:

(d) Unless the presence of the equipment was specifically required by a statute of this State as a condition of sale in the year listed as the year of manufacture on the certificate of title, the presence of any specific equipment is not required for the operation of a vehicle registered under this section.

(f) A vehicle registered under this section is exempt from any statute that requires periodic vehicle inspections and from any statute that requires the use and inspection of emission controls.

Motorists Cell Phone Use Study

I have prepared an original scientific review article on the subject of cellphone use while driving, substantiating the huge safety implications for allmotorists, and the even greater safety implications for motorcyclists. Ireviewed the landmark epidemiologal studies and the controlled experimentalstudies, as well as converging studies from other disciplines of science,such as neurology and psychology.

I have reprinted the “Introduction” to the review article below, but I wouldurge those of you who are interested in motorcyclist safety issues toconsider the full article, which is amply supported by references to thescientific studies, also liberally quoting from the supporting text of thescientific literature. We believe the article is also important for the “freedom fight,” inparticular to undermine the efforts of NHTSA to “create evidence” to supporttheir failed “motorcycle safety” policies focusing so myopically on “whatbikers wear.” Most importantly perhaps, the information presented in thearticle effectively undercuts NHTSA's comparisons of raw fatality data”before” and “after” the repeal of helmet laws. Very quickly, the escalationof cell phone use while driving has been literally epidemic over the past 10years. During the past 6 years rising from 4 percent of all American driverson the road at any given daylight moment in time actively engaged in cellphone conversation as of the year 2000, rising to 6 percent in 2002, then to8 percent in 2004 and then to 10 percent by 2005.

To make the implicationsplain, in the year 2000, four percent of all the drivers on the road at anygiven moment were driving as impaired as a DUI drunk driver, four times morelikely to cause an accident than those who were not involved in cell phoneconversation. The percentage has risen steadily over the past 6 years so nowwhen we ride, one out of every ten of the cars we encounter on the road isbeing operated by a DUI level impaired driver.

These cell phone impaireddrivers are actually substantially more dangerous to to motorcyclists, as wemake the case in the review article. But the inescapable fact is that therehas been a huge increase in the incidence of accidents generally andmotorcycle accidents in particular, which is what scientists would call anvery powerful “independent variable” which NHTSA and the states failed tocontrol for in their rush to blame the rise in motorcycle fatalities on therepeal of helmet laws. This line of reasoning is more elaborately explainedin the M-A-D-D article. Below I have reprinted the somewhat terseIntroduction.

INTRODUCTION

The convergence of epidemiological studies, controlled experimental studies,psychological and neurological studies demonstrate that driving under theinfluence of a cell phone is as dangerous as DUI drunk driving. The numberof drivers actively using cell phones on our street at any given daylightmoment is epidemic and rising by more than a percentage point per year forthe past 5 years, from 4 percent of all drivers at any given daylight momentas of the year 2000, to 10 percent as of the end of 2005.

The dangers posedby cell phone impaired drivers also escalates muliplicatively as there arefewer unimpaired drivers every year capable of using evasive action adequateto avoid the hazards created by those driving under the influence of theircell phones.

The mechanism of cell phone driving impairment is demonstrated in thecontrolled experimental literature to be a form of “inattentional blindness”a constriction of what cell phone users consciously “see,” deriving from theshifting of limited conscious capacity for attention to theinternal-cognitive tasks associated with the give and take of the cell phoneconversation away from the external-visual tasks essential for safe driving.

We suggest that the dangers posed by auto drivers who drive under theinfluence of cell phone conversation are even greater for the motorcyclistswhom they fail to “see.” One reason is that motorcyclists are morevulnerable to serious injury and death resulting from accidents generallyand hence from the increased general incidence of accidents caused by theDUI level cell phone impaired. Additionally, auto drivers have a profoundpreexisting inattentional blindness specific for motorcyclists, asdemonstrated by the pre-cell-phone-age studies demonstrating adisproportionate incidence of motorcycle accidents resulting from autodriver inattention specifically at intersections, after the auto driverenters the intersection or turns left at the intersection into themotorcyclist's right of way.

The fact that the auto drivers claim that theydon't “see” the motorcyclist derives from visual/visual inattentionalblindness. The cell phone impaired contribute an additional, different formof auditory-internal-cognitive distraction resulting in external-visualinattentional blindness. We suggest that the combination of the two forms ofinattentional blindness leads at least to an additive and possibly asynergistic effect to disproportionately increase the dangers formotorcyclists.

We conclude that all cell phone use while driving should be outlawed. Thusfar the states which have considered the issue have either rejected bans oncell phone use or have banned only to use of handheld cell phones whiledriving. It will become more and more obvious that cell phone use needs tobe prohibited while driving as the death told continues to mount. Becausecell phone impairment is an intentional blindness resulting from the cellphone conversation, not from “holding” the cell phone, legislation banningonly handheld cell phone use can be expected only to be completelyineffective in reducing the human carnage left in the trail of the cellphone impaired. Only comprehensive bans on all cell phone use while drivingwil be effective.

Cell phone use while driving must be severely penalized, by lengthy driverslicense suspension for first time offenders and jail time for repeatoffenders, equivalent to the penalties for DUI drunk driving. Fines haveproven ineffective in curtailing handheld cell phone use even where drivershad the option to use hands-free cell phones while driving.

There is no economic risk/benefit analysis which recommends permitting cellphone use while driving. To the extent that productive or semi-productivework is accomplished while driving, employers beware, if the employee causesan accident while engaged in business related cell phone conversation youwill be held liable for the resulting injuries. The use of cell phones bythe commuting work force also results in an impediment to traffic flow,traffic delays and longer commutes for all workers. Cell phone users take 19percent more time to regain flow-of-traffic speed after each brakingepisode. With one in ten drivers on our streets and highways activelyinvolved in cell phone conversation at any given daylight moment, indeed theeffect on traffic flow and city congestion is enormous.

The societal costsof driver cell phone use is measured by broken bodies, the loss of our lovedones, medical expense, increased length of driver commutes and citycongestion, increased fuel consumption, and the environmental impact. Nocolorable benefit of cell phone use while driving can justify the costs.
