TECH QUESTION OF THE WEEK–I’m thinking about running a 24-tooth sprocket on my JIMS 5-speed and a 48 tooth sprocket on the rear since I don’t have a six speed. I want to keep the revs down at highway speeds and I’m running a 100-inch Crazy Horse engine, so I have plenty of power.

LA COUNTY CHOPRODS

“That gearing sounds about right,” said Gard Hollinger, of LA Chop Rods. “However it’s usually best to run odd and even teeth so the chain isn’t always running on the same ones. Don’t know if it really makes any difference but that’s supposedly the best deal.”

I’m open to other thoughts.–Wrench

COMING UP, BIKERNET/BASSANI BABE POSTER–We don’t have a bike, but I’ll bet you do and wecould put Bassani’s on it for the shoot.

A Bikernet documentary on making the poster could be fun. Just picking theright model could be mass drama. And the model chosen could win an expensepaid trip to Cincinnati where she would work everyday in the Bassani boothsigning autographs and fending off marriage proposals at the V-Twin Expo.

HOUSTON BIKERNET UNDERCOVER AGENT SURFACES–Here is a shot I thought was kind of cool. I had just gotten back from the “devils” to pick up a clutch cable for the FLH which had broken when I was out riding her earlier that evening. Good thing I live right off the beltway & 290, no way in hell I could push that big ol’ girl through an intersection and then jump on her and drop her in gear!

Garage isn’t as big as it was in Pflugerville, but I get by and you can see my assistant Shiner Bock in the background.

PARTS AVAILABLE FOR THE NEW H-D XR 1200–Wow, what a great Harley, the new XR 1200!!It strongly reminds us of the old US dirt-track-racing times in its form and this blood-orange colouring is so very erotic. The bike excited us so much that we decided to make something special for it ? nothing ordinary but as extraordinary as the XR itself!!

wilberfront

The new Wilbers suspension for the XR, consists of tenser progressive fork springs and fitting fork oil to ensure that the front does not compress as quickly as with the OEM setup. The response characteristics of the fork are therewith further increased due to the progressive coils of the springs.

wilberXRshock

The specially build shock absorbers type ?XR? 633 with compression tank are made with new high-end ?spring-steering? piston rods which greatly improve response and enable very sensitive damping control. Depending on the compression speed the ?spring-steering? now affects the oil flow within the piston channels to avoid hydraulic blocking!

The shocks with compression reservoirs naturally possess integrated high- and low-speed adjustment in 22-clicks each, tuneable rebound in 22-clicks and continuously adjustable preload. Their lengths are designed to lift the seating height of the motorcycle for 15 mm ? together with the fork spring kit this raising enormously influences ground clearance!

All adjustment possibilities, the ground clearance and the response behaviour of the suspension are now in accordance to the most modern state-of-art!

wilberXRBike

So are the shock absorbers type ?XR? 630, however those stereo shocks lack the flexible compression adjustment. Here the seating height is increased for 10 mm to again offer more ground clearance than the original version!

In a whole the new suspension setup together with the new vehicle geometry will lead to more agility in handling and riding behaviour! With the optic we conformed ourselves to the hot-blooded ?XR? and decided to pick blood-orange springs to create even more floating transitions!

As a matter of course at Wilbers all suspension parts are build individually for the customer, referring to riders? weight and operation within 14 working days and are delivered with 5 years warranty and an ABE (general permission of operation)!

Please send your enquiry to devries@wilbers.de.

NEW LEGISLATIVE PROBLEM–A new problem on the horizon is these little vehicles that the Federal Government has listed as motorcycles. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,449824,00.html

If listed as motorcycles collisions, crashes, injury and deaths will be added to statistics for two wheel vehicles and the three wheel vehicles we now know as motorcycles If they are listed as motorcycles, will occupants be required to wear helmets in states that require them?

Will the operators be required to have a motorcycle endorsement? Will they have to take the mandatory rider training courses like they are in Florida?

We need to keep a eye on this

THE CODE OF THE WEST FOR Non-Military FOLK WHO CARE– Dear Civilians, ‘We know that the current state of affairs in our great nation has many civilians up in arms and excited to join the military.

For those of you who can’t join, you can still lend a hand. Here are a few of the areas where we would like your assistance:

1. The next time you see any adults talking (or wearing a hat) during the playing of the National Anthem – kick their ass.

2. When you witness, firsthand, someone burning the American Flag in protest – kick their ass.

3. Regardless of the rank they held while they served, pay the highest amount of respect to all veterans. If you see anyone doing otherwise, quietly pull them aside and explain how these veterans fought for the very freedom they bask in every second. Enlighten them on the many sacrifices these veterans made to make this Nation great. Then hold them down while a disabled veteran kicks their ass.

4. (GUYS) If you were never in the military, DO NOT pretend that you were. Wearing battle dress uniforms (BDUs) or Jungle Fatigues, telling others that you used to be ‘Special Forces,’ and collecting GI Joe memorabilia, might have been okay when you were seven years old. Now, it will only make you look stupid and get your ass kicked.

5. Next time you come across an Air Force member, do not ask them, ‘Do you fly a jet?’ Not everyone in the Air Force is a pilot. Such ignorance deserves an ass-kicking (children are exempt).

6. If you witness someone calling the US Coast Guard ‘non-military’, Inform them of their mistake – and kick their ass.

THURSDAY NEWS UPDATES – KLOCK WERKS BONNEVILLE SUCCESS, JIMS TOOL OF THE WEEK, VETERANS DAY HISTORY LESSON, BRASS DEAL OF THE WEEK FROM LATS AND ATTS AND MORE.

Continued From Page 2

FOUR LADIES AND FIVE RECORDS FOR TEAM KLOCK WERKS– MITCHELL, S.D.? Four ladies were riding for Team Klock Werks at the Motorcycle Speed Trials by Bub on the Bonneville Salt Flats this year. After a week of racing, Team Klock Werks came back with FIVE new National Land Speed Records! As a bonus, Laura Klock defended the ?World?s Fastest Bagger? record, and her daughters Erika (17 ? senior at Hanson High School) and Karlee (14 ? freshman at Mitchell High School) joined her as record holders on their own bikes, making the trio the first mother-daughter-daughter in history to set land speed records in the same year at the same event. At age 14, Karlee was the youngest female participant, and she set two of the five records in her rookie attempt.

Laura Klock faced the tough challenge of being a supportive and encouraging mother while trying to set a land speed record of her own. She was successful at both roles. Laura has piloted the WFB (World?s Fastest Bagger) to multiple records since her first attempt in 2006, and this year she reached a new personal best, and a new record. The WFB, #3338 in MPS-PF 3000, reached a top speed of 153.906 mph, with a new record on the books of 153.592. The WFB utilizes many of Klock Werks signature series parts including the patent pending Flare Windshield.

Erika Cobb returned this year after setting a land speed record on a 500 cc Buell Blast in 2007. Erika rode a 1995 Buell S2 for this year?s speed trials. She set a new land speed record on the Buell #455 in P-PP 1350 of 130.392, and her personal best for the week was 132.206.

While both Erika and Karlee have traveled to the salt with the team since 2006, Karlee was unable to participate simply because she wasn?t old enough. This year she was able to get a valid driver?s license from the state of South Dakota, where it is allowed to be licensed at the age of 14, and participate. Karlee rode the Buell Blast that Erika piloted in 2007, which means that she went after her older sister?s record. Karlee not only broke the old record on the Buell Blast #3333 (110.724 mph in class MPS-PG500), she also set an additional record by running the bike in another class by removing the fairing (107.391 in class M-PG 500). Her personal best is 111.580 mph.

klock girls

With Karlee?s land speed records, she will join her mother and older sister in the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum?s ?First Ladies of Motorcycling? exhibit as the first mother-daughter-daughter trio in history to hold Bonneville National Land Speed Records in the same year.

Also new to the Klock Werks team was Michelle Mielke, who is the wife of Klock Werks service manager, Joe Mielke. Michelle was riding her 2000 Yamaha V-Star 650 bike #415 in M-P 650 and set a land speed record of 102.1. Her personal best was 102.389.

All of these land speed records are under AMA (American Motorcycle Association) sanctioning and are subject to final verification. Records on the Bonneville Salt Flats are an average of two passes ? one being a qualifying down run and then a return run. A rider must be at or above the existing record speed to qualify for a return pass.

The Bub Speed Trials are sponsored by AMA so the return pass is made in the opposite direction on the course. The speed is an average of how fast you pass through a measured mile (which is the middle mile of the course). There is no separation between male and female or by age. Bikes are placed in classes based on their frame, fuel and motor size.

Team Klock Werks came home with more than just land speed records. The Team also won an award sponsored by www.landracing.com given to the team who has the cleanest and most organized area in the pits. Thanks to our sponsors ICON, Avon Tyres, S&S, Baker Drivetrain, NOS energy drinks, Drag Specialties, Dynatek, Pingel, Baron Performance, Crossroads Performance, and Buell Brothers and Sisters.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY HISTORY LESSON, VETERANS DAY–Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on November 11.

However, if it occurs on a Sunday then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave, and if it occurs Saturday then either Saturday or Friday may be so designated. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11 , the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.

The holiday is commonly printed as Veteran’s Day or Veterans’ Day in calendars and advertisements. While these spellings are grammatically acceptable, the United States government has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling.

The armistice treaty between the Allies and Germany < was signed in a railway carriage in Compi?gne Forest on 11 November 1918, and marked the end of the First World War on the Western Front. Principal signatories were Marshal Ferdinand Foch, the Allied Commander-in-chief, and Matthias Erzberger, Germany's representative.

The Armistice was agreed at 5 AM on 11 November, to come into effect at 11 AM Paris time (that is, 11 AM GMT, for which reason the occasion is sometimes referred to as “the eleventh of the eleventh of the eleventh”. It was the result of a hurried and desperate process.

Acting German commander Paul von Hindenburg had requested arrangements for a meeting from Ferdinand Foch via telegram on 7 November. He was under pressure of imminent revolution in Berlin, Munich and elsewhere across Germany.

The German delegation crossed the front line in five cars and was escorted for ten hours across the devastated war zone of Northern France. They were then entrained and taken to the secret destination, Foch’s railway siding in the forest of Compi?gne.

Foch appeared only twice in the three days of negotiations: on the first day, to ask them what they wanted, and on the last day, to see to the signatures. In between, the German delegation discussed the detail of Allied terms with French and Allied officers. The Armistice amounted to complete German demilitarization, with few promises made by the Allies in return. The naval blockade of Germany would continue until complete peace terms could be agreed upon.

There was no question of negotiation. The Germans were able to correct a few impossible demands (for example, the decommissioning of more submarines than their fleet possessed), and registered their formal protest at the harshness of Allied terms. But they were in no position to refuse to sign. On Sunday 10 November, they were shown newspapers from Paris, to inform them that Kaiser Wilhelm II had abdicated.

Erzberger was not able to get instructions from Berlin due to the fall of the government. However, he was able to communicate with the German Army Chief of Staff Paul von Hindenburg in Spain who instructed him to sign at any price as an armistice was absolutely necessary. Signatures were made between 5:12 AM and 5:20 AM, Paris time.

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 12, 1919. The United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution seven years later on June 4, 1926, requesting the President issue another proclamation to observe November 11 with appropriate ceremonies. An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday; “a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day’.”

In 1953, an Emporia, Kansas, shoe store owner named Al King had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who served in World War I. King had been actively involved with the American War Dads during World War II. He began a campaign to turn Armistice Day into “All” Veterans Day. The Emporia Chamber of Commerce took up the cause after determining that 90% of Emporia merchants as well as the Board of Education supported closing their doors on November 11, 1953, to honor veterans. With the help of then-U.S. Rep. Ed Rees, also from Emporia, a bill for the holiday was pushed through Congress. President Dwight Eisenhower signed it into law on May 26, 1954.[3]

Congress amended this act on November 8, 1954, replacing “Armistice” with Veterans, and it has been known as Veterans Day since.[

STREETWALKER BANNER

BIKERNET BAR STOOL ECONOMICS– Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve.

“Since you are all such good customers, he said, I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.” The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free.

But what about the other six men; the paying customers?

How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share? They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.!

And so: The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).

The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).

The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).

The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).

The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).

The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

‘I only got a dollar out of the $20, ‘declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, ‘but he got $10!’

Yeah, that’s right,’ exclaimed the fifth man. ‘I only saved a dollar, too.

It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!’

‘That’s true!!’ shouted the seventh man. ‘Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!’*

‘Wait a minute,’ yelled the first four men in unison. ‘We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!’

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Revolution Manufacturing unveils new King Knurl accessories for baggers and more!–Revolution Manufacturing, the world leader in carbon fiber technology for the v-twin, has recently delved into the world of billet aluminum. And with the introduction of its new King Knurl, the first of many styles to come, shows their diversification in the marketplace.

The first parts in the line are aimed directly at the very hot bagger market with floorboards, gas cap lids, speaker grilles, dash inserts, brake pedal cover, and shifter and foot pegs. The floorboards use a new, patented, underside for better appearance and durability. Parts are available models up to and including the new 2009?s.

?We continue to expand our production and have recently added a state of the art CNC machine shop complete with CNC mills, lathes, CNC plasma, and even waterjet cutting equipment to enhance our carbon fiber production operations? states Michael Kamalian, CEO of Revolution Manufacturing. ?The bottom side of existing floorboards are just plain ugly and the plastic add-ons are just not sufficient for more than show? states Michael. ?We constructed a whole new, patented, bottom side that looks as good as the rest of the parts. And with our accent cuts on our new King Knurl, which consists of massive ?? diamond knurling gloss black anodized, the visual effects are stunning as well as providing a firm grip while riding?.

It has received many awards including Hot Bike?s most innovative product award and the first annual Teresi V-Twin award.

BIKERNET FORUM BOARD BANNER

HARLEY DAVIDSON DEALERS CASE SETTLES FOR $90,000–This is just one example of ARB fines in California. Did you know that all motorcycles represent ZERO PERCENT of emissions when stacked against all the other bad guys. We’re working on a study to shine some light on this subject. We’re discovering that it may be all about the money. In 2007 ARB fine garnered the ARB more than 10 million bucks. Here’s just one story:

On a routine inspection in March, 2007 of Harley Davidson dealers located in California, it was found that some dealers were selling motorcycles built by Thunder Mountain Motorcycle Company that had not been certified by ARB.

The Thunder Mountain motorcycles found in violation were built by a manufacturer located in Colorado that had only certified one model of their line of motorcycles for sale in California for model year 2006 and 2007.

The motorcycles found in violation used a Harley Davidson engine and transmission. A Notice of Violation was issued to San Diego Harley Davidson with penalties of $35,000.00 for violations of H&SC 43150-43153.

A Notice of Violation was also issued to Bartels’ Harley Davidson located in Marina Del Rey with penalties of $35,000.00 for violations of H&SC 43150-43153. A Notice of Violation was also issued to Harley Davidson of Sacramento with penalties of $20,000.00 for violations of H&SC 43150-43153.

To settle their case in June 2007, the manufacture paid the penalties for all of the dealers and removed the illegal non-California-certified motorcycles that were left in the dealers’ stock from California. Thunder Mountain has now certified all of its models for 2007 with ARB.

TWO 1950s AUTO SHOW CARS TO SHARE THE SPOTLIGHT AT RM?S ‘AUTOMOBILES OF ARIZONA’ EVENT–Two unique and rare examples of automotive styling ? a record-breaking, Hemi-powered 1954 Dodge Firearrow III Sport Concept by Ghia, and a one-of-a-kind 1950 Saturn ?Bob Hope Special? are set to star at RM?s prestigious ?Automobiles of Arizona? event, January 16th in Phoenix, Arizona.

PHOENIX, Arizona (November 10, 2008) ? A rare, record-breaking 1954 Dodge Firearrow III Sport Concept by Ghia and a one-of-a-kind 1950 Saturn ?Bob Hope Special? will take centre-stage at RM?s prestigious Automobiles of Arizona event, January 16th in Phoenix, Arizona.

Each unique examples of automotive styling from the 1950s, the Arizona auction marks the first time these particular one-off cars have come to auction.

mercedes

The 1954 Dodge Firearrow III Sport Concept was the Chrysler Corporation?s answer to the sports cars that were known to be on the drawing board for Ford Thunderbird and the already released design of the 1953 Corvette. The third in a series of four unique Firearrow concept cars made, it has been said that this concept car had the skillful blending of the best ideas from Europe and the American design studios of Virgil Exner, and brought an entirely new kind of beauty with a look of poised power.

Introduced at the 1954 Detroit Automobile Show, the Firearrow III was the company?s main attraction at all the major auto shows that year. Unlike other concepts, this example was built to ?show and go? thanks to its superb engineering, detailed design and of course the legendary Hemi engine. Built as a fully operational show car, details of the car are picture perfect ? windows roll up and down, the car sets on 15″ chrome-plated wire wheels, and the quadruple exhaust pipes on the rear fenders and in working condition as opposed to being merely decoration.

caddy

Also set to appeal to those with an affinity for the rare and unusual ? although differing to Chrysler?s idea cars in that it was built without the backing of a corporation or sponsor – is the 1950 Saturn ?Bob Hope Special?, also affectionately known as the ?Bob Hope Special?. A one-off early sports custom built at a reported cost of $12,000 by father and son team, Lloyd, Don and Bob Templeton, this extraordinary example became the most famous and most published custom bodied car in the United States between 1950 and 1953.

Built on a modified Mercury chassis, this unique custom features completely handmade steel coachwork, three-speed transmission, two-speed Columbia rear end and a full race Mercury flathead engine. With a 7 ? foot long front hood and a dashboard resembling an airplane cockpit with 32 different instruments and controls, the car?s unique styling contributions came from a variety of different marques.

These unique motor cars will join over 120 exceptional vintage automobiles at RM?s prestigious Automobiles of Arizona auction event, January 16th at the luxurious Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona. An auction preview will be held January 15th from 9am to 5pm, followed by the auction on January 16th from 11am. Admission to the auction is by catalog only, which admits both the catalog holder and a guest. The full-color collectable catalog is available for $100 U.S. (plus shipping), by calling (800)-211-4371 or visiting www.rmauctions.com .

We’re Americans, the innovative gods, we’ll straighten this mess out and party again. Let’s hit the news:

SPEAKING OF SEX– Bill worked in a pickle factory. He had been employed there for a number of years when he came home oneday to confess to his wife that he had a terrible compulsion.

He had an urge to stick his penis into the pickle slicer.

His wife suggested that he should see a sex therapist to talk about it,but Bill said he would be too embarrassed. He vowed to overcome thecompulsion on his own.

One day a few weeks later, Bill came home and his wife could see at oncethat something was seriously wrong.

‘What’s wrong, Bill?’ she asked.

BIKERNET RESEARCHING AN EFFORT TO ESTABLISH MOTORCYCLE COUNCIL IN SEMA–Iwas just reading the Sunday post and saw your comments about starting a motorcycle council within SEMA. That’s actually an idea I’ve had for a long time but never really moved ahead with it.

Growing up a car hot rodder I’ve always felt there is a very similar mind set between the two cultures and think we would benefit from trying to find common goals to deal with what we all know is impending legislation to either greatly restrict or eventually do away with both cultures.

I’d be interested in being involved with this new idea if you’re looking for others to join in.

Motorcycling safety policies

Fema1
An assortment of major minds in the European motorcycle rights community. Photo by G. Livett.

Editor's note: This is a tad awkward to understand. It falls under, “You needed to be there.” It's a power point presentation, from Aline at FEMA (Federation of European Motorcyclists Association), I plucked it apart to share with you. A Vision Zero concept was promoted in a European country to reduce accidents, for a one year period, to Zero. Research demonstrated that if motorcycles still shared the road it wasn't possible, so they considered a ban. FEMA went to work and created this presentation. It points out all accident avoidance issues. Check this out. It shines a new light on motorcycle safety and where efforts need to be focused.

Overview

Putting motorcycle safety into the right context

Improving motorcycle safety: key safety aspects

Motorcycle safety policies around the worldTowards motorcycle safety strategies

Putting motorcycle safety into the right context

For the debate to be balanced, it is a fundamental prerequisite to put the absolute figures within the appropriate context. It is also important to look into the causes of motorcycle accidents, in order to identify valid remedies

Motorcycling can not be made risk-free

Motorcyclists are vulnerable and have a high risk of injury (this is also true for walking or cycling).

Conclusion: No road safety initiative – whether from Governments or riders themselves – can ever make motorcycling risk-free.

Most riders are safety conscious

Most riders are fully aware of the fact that they are vulnerable road users and that motorcycling requires specific skills and a focused, alert behaviour.

Conclusion: it should not be constantly claimed that motorcyclists are a “careless” group of road users!

The extreme ‘high-risk takers’

motorcycling sometimes attracts “high risk takers” with extreme behaviour.

Conclusion: give motorcycling a bad public reputation!

Doubtful whether any road safety initiative will change the attitude and behaviour of these individuals regular motorcyclists should not have to pay the consequences of these few extremists

Motorcycle accident statistics: reliability and lack of useful data

Road safety targets should reflect casualty rates, not only casualty numbers;

Police accident reporting and discrepencies comparing data;

Need to monitor the effects of various road safety initiatives

Conclusion: Statistical information is generally a problem when talking about motorcycle safety.

Fema12
Here's a shot of Aline giving this presentation to a gang of bureaucrats who would like to ban motorcycles.

Motorcycle accident research:

Motorcycle casualties are often the focus of research, with many reports highlighting the perceived risk-taking of motorcyclists and the dangerousness of motorcycles.

Conclusion: Lack of understanding of motorcycles and motorcyclists: the majority of researchers do not ride motorcycles and do not understand the social issues surrounding two wheeled transport

Accident prevention vs injury reduction?

Vision Zero’s concept = injury reduction

Always some kind of injury in a mc accident

Riders' Organisations (RO) are more focused on accident prevention than injury reduction:

good initial rider training

motorcycle awareness campaigns

predictable road infrastructure

Improving motorcycle safety: key safety aspects

Riders Associations around the world have been working at improving motorcycle safety for decades.

Their thorough knowledge of motorcycling and motorcyclists have provide them with a true expertise not to be overlooked.

Motorcycle safety policies around the world

Policies based on « bikeism » and ignorance only creates resistance and counter pressure from the motorcycling community

Motorcycle Safety policies: Conclusions

Based on facts or prejudices?

Accident prevention or Injury reduction?

Positively driven or « bikeism »?

Taking into account motorcycling characteristics (in consultation with motorcyclists) or derived from car safety policies?

Are these elements linked to a Hidden ban or real consideration?

B) met a woman that causes him to not want to come home.
C)He decides to gamble for once in his life, hits the big one, becomes addicted to gambling and trades in cards for motorcycles.

BIKERNET THURSDAY NEWS CONTINUES – KRAWIEC UPDATE, DAVE PEREWITZ – THE LOOK, JIMS TOOL OF THE WEEK, BAKER POWERBOX AND MORE…

Continued From Page 1

EK_LasVegas

KRAWIEC BEATS SMITH IN LAS VEGAS AND GAINS IN TITLE CHASE–Screamin? Eagle Rider Heads to NHRA Finals 19 Points Away from Championship LAS VEGAS (Nov. 2, 2008) – Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec defeated series points leader Matt Smith in the third round of the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and lies just 19 points out of first place with one event left on the Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule.

Krawiec started the weekend in the second place, 42 points behind Smith in Countdown to One championship points. He gained back three points by out-qualifying Smith with a 7.035-second run, good for second place to the track-record 6.993 pass of top qualifier Angelle Sampey. Smith qualified sixth at 7.059.

Krawiec opened Sunday eliminations by defeating Shawn Gann and Mike Berry in the first two rounds to set up a show-down with Smith, the defending Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, in the semi-finals. Aboard the Screamin? Eagle Harley-Davidson V-Rod, Krawiec cut a 0.005-second reaction time and a 7.078 ET to defeat Smith?s pass of 0.022/7.039. It was the second close light of the day for Krawiec, who had a 0.003-second reaction time against Berry in round two.

Facing Chris Rivas in the final round with the chance to take the points lead, Krawiec got a very late start with a 0.181-second reaction time, and shut his bike down mid-run after realizing he had no chance to win. Rivas made a 0.012/7.052 run to win the final.

?I made a stupid mistake in the final,? said Krawiec. ?I let go of the clutch and the bike hesitated just a bit, and I think the lever caught on my glove. That could have been a win. But we gained 23 points on Smith, so it?s got to be a good weekend for us. We did not have the fastest bikes at this event, but this just shows that the fastest bikes don?t always win. We went rounds with slower bikes.?

Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines qualified eighth at 7.071 seconds and advanced to the semi-final round, defeating Craig Treble and Sampey (red light) before losing to Rivas on a red light.

With each round of eliminations worth 20 points, Krawiec can take his first NHRA championship by winning one more round than Smith at the season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, Nov. 13-16 at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California.

?My strategy is to go to Pomona and win all four rounds,? said Krawiec. ?Just win the event and we win the championship. It?s that simple. It will be important to out-qualify Smith again to keep the margin to less than 20 points.?

Rivas, who is now 39 points out of first place, still has a shot at the title should Krawiec and Smith falter in the early rounds.

After four rounds of the five-round NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Countdown to One series for the championship, Smith leads with 2393 points. Krawiec has 2374 points, and Rivas is third with 2354 points. Sampey, in fourth with 2275 points, and Hines, fifth with 2260 points, have been eliminated from the championship.

rsd_powerbox

lsd_powerbox

THE POWERBOX: APPROACHABLE BAKER FUNCTION-FORMED? LOOK WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY FOR OVERKILL STRENGTH–The surprisingly successful sales of the BAKER Torquebox and the BAKER Function-Formed? design that it sports led the designers at BAKER Drivetrain to apply this styling to a more down-to-earth, premium BAKER Overdrive 6-Speed Evo transmission. The Torquebox?s prime directive was to have the ability to handle more torque than any other transmission and the retail price was not a consideration in its development, so it was though only a fringe customer would invest in it. Although it features an impressive amount of performance-enhancing engineering finesse atop its strength, one of the most popular features was the unique aesthetics of the Function-Formed? case design. A surprising amount of builders were buying the pricey Torquebox for only the visual merit instead of its superior strength and shifting finesse. So, the Powerbox was born to cater to builders who don?t require investing in an obscene level of torque capacity.

The Powerbox is still plenty strong. It?s a BAKER Drivetrain transmission. In fact, with the 6061-T651 billet aluminum case design it will be sturdier than those with mere cast cases. In addition, it still features BAKER Drivetrain?s refined, premium, and unstoppable American gears inside for dependability you can trust. The Powerbox for Evo Softail brings style and rigidity to a new dimension.

In conclusion, the Powerbox is for those who don’t need the torque capacity of the renowned Torquebox, but still want the look and quality. The Powerbox delivers the stiffness and performance of a BAKER Function-Formed case, but at a lower cost. It will handle power better than most any transmission out there – just not the Torquebox.

BIKIES TO BE STRIPPED OF COLOURS, INSIGNIA BY POLICE —QUEENSLAND bikies have called a truce to discuss action over the State Government’s plan to strip them of their prized club colours and insignias.

The Government is looking at a bold move adopted by U.S. authorities, who have sought a court injunction under forfeiture laws to seize the trademark on the name of the Mongols bikie gang.

If successful, U.S. Police would have the power to demand Mongol members remove their club patch or ‘colours’, which bear the gang insignia ? the most prized possession in the bikie culture.

Several Australian-based bikie gangs, including the Hells Angels, have a trademark over their name.

Police Minister Judy Spence said she would ask the State’s Police Bikie Task Force Hydra to consider the move.

It comes as the State Government is looking at introducing tough laws against outlaw motorcycle gangs that have been implemented in South Australia and Western Australia, where it is illegal for gang members to associate.

The Australian Crime Commission has deemed bikie gangs to be a significant criminal threat nationwide.

The Sunday Mail also can reveal that 10 of the 14 resident bikie gangs in Queensland called a truce to meet at a secret location on Brisbane’s south side to discuss the proposed anti-bikie laws.

Gangs sent two to three representatives to a suburban Brisbane coffee shop two weeks ago to the meeting organized by the Hells Angels. Members attended unarmed, not wearing club colours, and were not allowed to bring mobile phones. They told The Sunday Mail that if the Government moved to ban the wearing of colours or introduced laws similar to SA or WA; the gangs would take legal action.

‘If there are no colours, how dangerous do you think that will be for police and the public not being to able identify us?’ he said. ‘No colours will break down barriers between us and we will work together. That means there will be more drug deals and more murders,’ another bikie warned.

SA Premier Mike Rann has called for other states and territories to adopt the groundbreaking laws to prevent outlaw gang members fleeing to other states.

Under the legislation, the SA Attorney General can declare a criminal bikie gang an outlaw organization and confiscate their assets, including their motorcycles.

This week the Parliamentary Joint Committee on the Australian Crime Commission will hold hearings in Brisbane for their inquiry into legislative arrangements to outlaw serious and organized crime groups.

Oakland Police Choose Loud Pipes

HOGcop

A couple of months ago we ran a newspaper report from Oakland, California wherein the Oakland police reported to be re-installing louder exhaust on their patrol bikes for accident prevention . Of course the MIC (Motorcycle Industry Council) disputed their claims. Since we produced the Bikernet.com Independent Noise study, we continually look for confirmation. What could be better than a major metropolitan police department confirming our contentions. It made our day. Immediately we reached out to our Oakland area brothers for help and just last week the data surfaced. I'm going to reprint every official document right here for you to review:

DAYNA?S BIKE–Bandit,My name is George Kohler, I own the red ?48 Pan you are running on the site at this time. THANK YOU, for your interest in the Pan and my life story. (well not quite the entire story but all that I will admit to on paper). Funny thing is there are two Phil?s involved with the Pan. Phil Gonzales did the photos at the Torco Oil factory and Phil that I believe you already know from Phil?s Speed in Orange, Ca. He was responsible for the assembly of the engine and trans.

This guy has not gotten the recognition he truly deserves, what a perfectionist and all around down to earth gear head. It is a small world when it comes down to it. To make a long story short , as I said in the bio, my wife does ride her own scooter and it is a rather unique looking Sporty. I.E. Wide glide, 21? front, new sheet metal ?39 beehive tail light and lots of little subtle changes that really makes it her own.

Dayna Trask_32

The entire bike was from her dreams entirely, right down to the paint color and graphics. She is proud of the fact that Harley came out with a copper paint AFTER she already had her scooter up and running. If you would like I can e-mail you some photos and if it looks like anything you can use for your site I am sure she appreciate it. Thanks for your time,

P.S. How is the patio table coming along ?

CRIME FIGHTERS CHECK IN–Superman was feeling bored after a long day of crime fighting and wanted to go out and party. He called Batman to ask if he wanted to go to a club and pick up some girls. Batman said Robin was ill and he had to look after him.

A little disappointed, Superman called Spider-Man to see if he fancied a few beers. Spider-Man told him he had a date with Cat-Woman.

As a last resort, Superman flew over to Wonder Woman’s apartment to see if she was free. As he landed on her balcony, he saw Wonder Woman naked on the bed with her legs open. Superman thought to himself:

“I’m faster than a speeding bullet. I could be in there, have sex, and be out again before she knew what was happening”.

So Superman did his Super Thing in a split second and flew off happily. Meanwhile on the bed, Wonder Woman said: “Did you hear something?”

“No”, said the Invisible Man, “but my ass suddenly hurts like hell!”

DOT PROPOSES NEW FEDERAL SAFETY RULES TO BAR NOVELTY HELMETS–The best-selling motorcycle-helmet decals at a popular biker website include fake bullet holes, skull and crossbones, the American flag — and $1 stickers that say ?DOT?.

The latter has created a problem for U.S. highway safety regulators, because fake Department of Transportation stickers can be used to counterfeit safety certification of cheap novelty motorcycle helmets, which they claim are one cause of rising accident fatalities.

?We?re proposing new safety rules to make it harder for vendors to sell unsafe novelty helmets or for riders to get away with wearing them,? said Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, herself a Harley rider. ?We are proposing to do that by requiring manufacturers to place a larger, tamper-proof DOT label on the back of certified helmets that have been through a wider range of safety tests.?

The current federal standard, implemented in 1974, requires a DOT emblem on the rear of the helmet, indicating it passed certification tests. Manufacturer and model data are located on a label inside the helmet. The new proposal calls for a DOT-symbol decal to be applied to the helmet beneath its clear coating, with the manufacturer’s name and helmet model added above the symbol and the word ?certified? below it.

The new rule also would refine the tests manufacturers do to certify their helmets to meet DOT standards for impact, penetration and retention.

Novelty helmets, which have thin protective liners, failed all the federal performance tests, said Stephen Kratzke, associate administrator for rulemaking at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but when police spot a helmet that doesn’t look like the real thing, riders can claim they thought the DOT sticker meant it was certified. Sellers of the labels say it stands for ?Doing Our Thing?.

?It makes it really hard to enforce helmet laws,? said Kratzke. The goal of the new rule is ?to make sure in helmet-law states it is easier for police to enforce the law.?

NHTSA estimates that 15% of the motorcycle riders in the 20 mandatory helmet law states wear ?beanie? helmets that don?t meet the current FMVSS218 federal standard. ?It’s a political statement against the helmet laws,? said Eric Anderson, chairman of an industry helmet task force. ?It’s fashionable to be anti-helmet.?

Regulators estimate it would cost manufacturers, who turn out 5.2 million certified helmets annually, only about 2 cents each or $100,000 to comply with the new rule.

Motorcycle groups said the time and money would be better spent, and more lives saved, through rider education and motorist awareness programs. Public comments will be taken until Dec. 1.

WYOMING BIKERS FEND OFF NOISE ORDINANCE–A proposed noise ordinance is on the “back burner” after scores of motorcyclists flooded the Casper City Council chambers. The council voted unanimously and to a raucous applause to table the proposed change to a noise ordinance, which means it will not be discussed again unless a council member brings it back.

The proposed change read: “No person shall operate any motor vehicle in the city in such a manner that the public’s attention is drawn to the noise created by the motor vehicle.”

One biker after another spoke before the council to testify about how “loud pipes save lives.” Loud exhaust keeps drivers aware of bikers and prevent accidents, said Jim Siri, a member of Wyoming Central A.B.A.T.E., a motorcycle advocacy group. ?Many things distract drivers, and if they aren’t paying attention they won’t always see motorcyclists, but they may still hear them,? he told the Jackson Hole Star-Tribune.

Abuse of a motorcycle on city streets is unacceptable, but motorcyclists also don’t want to be unfairly targeted, said Russ Reddick, vice-president of Wyoming State A.B.A.T.E. and co-director of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) in region three. He told the newspaper that he wants to educate riders on how to ride respectfully and also educate drivers on how to be more aware of motorcyclists.

Motorcyclists and the council plan to work together to help solve “irresponsible riding” through residential neighborhoods, both groups agreed.

7th Annual Rally in the Gorge moves up a month in 2009– Seattle, WA ? Sound RIDER! publisher and event promoter, Tom Mehren, announced today changes in the dates for the 7th annual Rally in the Gorge. The event, held in Stevenson, Washington, has been moved up one month and will be held Wednesday, July 29 to Sunday, August 2 in 2009. The rally will be extended from four to five days. For the fourth year, in a row the event will be designated as the Northwest Regional Rally of the American Motorcyclist Association. ?This is a chance to put the rally on mid-season, rather than at the end of the riding season, which should bode well for the manufacturers and vendors who participate,? commented Mehren from his Seattle office.

Since 2003, Sound RIDER! has produced motorcycle rallies in the Columbia River Gorge. The 2009 Rally in the Gorge features activities for sportbike, sport touring, dualsport and maxi-scooter enthusiasts. Prior rallies have attracted national support from manufacturers, distributors and vendors including BMW, Triumph, Aprilia, Ducati, Parts Unlimited, Western Powersports, Avon Tyres, Nelson-Rigg and others. Guest speakers have included David Hough, author of the Proficient Motorcycling series; Nick Ienatsch, lead instructor at the Freddie Spencer Performance Riding School; and Ramey Stroud, founder of the Cascade Endurance Center. Vendor support and clinic instructors for the 2009 event will be announced beginning in January. The rally is held within the boundaries of the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, an area rich in great motorcycling roads (both paved and gravel), road-building history and stunning beauty that includes Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens.

Sound RIDER! began as an online motorcycle magazine in 1999. In 2009, the publication will celebrate its tenth anniversary. In 2001, the publication branched into event promotion and has created events such as the 3 Pass BLA$T, the Starlight Foundation?s charity ride and Rally in the Gorge. The 2008 rally portal is at www.soundrider.com/rally. A new portal and sub sites are coming soon.

KRAWIEC READY TO RESUME NHRA TITLE CHASE IN LAS VEGAS–Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines Team Puts Championship Experience to Work.

MILWAUKEE (Oct. 30, 2008) ? It has been a long five weeks for Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec. With two races left on the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing schedule and a Pro Stock Motorcycle championship on the line, Krawiec and the Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines crew have been biding their time since the motorcycle class last raced on September 28 in Memphis. They are more than ready to release that pent-up energy when qualifying begins on Friday for the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

?I don?t mind a break but this has been a long time to wait,? said Krawiec. ?It would be great to race between Memphis and Las Vegas, but I don?t make the schedule.?

Krawiec lies in second place in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Countdown to One championship chase, just 42 points behind NitroFish Buell rider Matt Smith. At Memphis, Krawiec gained 17 points on the leader by defeating Smith in the third round of eliminations. Krawiec then lost in the final round when an electrical failure shut down his bike just after he left the starting line.

?During the break we rebuilt both of the team?s Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycles, and we found a broken wire that was the source of my problem at Memphis,? said Krawiec from the Vance & Hines race shop in Indianapolis. ?So the bikes are ready to go, and the team is ready. I?ve never been number one in points, so I think all the pressure is on Smith. He needs to maintain his position.?

The team will be putting extra emphasis on qualifying performance at Las Vegas and at the final race at Pomona, California, Nov. 13-16.

?We are two rounds of eliminations plus two points behind right now,? said Krawiec. ?We?d like to out-qualify Smith at both events and eliminate that two-point advantage. Then we?ve got two races ? eight rounds of eliminations ? to go three rounds more than he does.?

Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines is facing longer odds at Las Vegas. The three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion is in sixth place, 132 points behind the leader Smith. But Krawiec says his teammate will be a factor down the stretch.

Eddie_Dallas2

?Andrew will be racing hard, and he obviously brings a lot of experience to the situation,? said Krawiec, who is in his second season with the Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team and has yet to win a final in regular NHRA competition. ?This is a team that has won many championships, and I?ve been getting a lot of advice from Andrew and (crew chief) Matt Hines, which has been priceless and made me feel confident.

?We all want to bring home another championship for Harley-Davidson and Vance & Hines,? said Krawiec. ?I hope it comes down to me and Matt Smith in the final round at Pomona, and I need to beat him to get my first win and the championship. That would be something to remember.?

5-BALL RACING’S VALERIE THOMPSON SCORES NEW SPONSORS–Two time Bonneville land speed record holder and NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Valerie Thompson announced new marketing partnerships as she arrived at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals. ByeByeBanker.com will step in as title sponsor of Thompson?s S&S powered V-Twin and XXX Racing Fuel will join as an associate. ?This all happened in one week,? said Thompson, fresh off the road after the long drive from Wisconsin. ?I?ve worked real hard at getting new team shirts, the bike repainted by my sponsor Prestige Auto Works, logos on the trailer, new hero cards and the list keeps going.

?After a major setback with my original 2008 title sponsor, we have been hard at trying to keep the dream alive. Having a little down time between Concord and Vegas allowed us to work at showing these two great companies what their involvement with us and the NHRA can do for them.

“ByeByeBanker.com is a mortgage management solution that is just exactly what so many homeowners need these days to protect themselves from the current economy. And many of you have already heard about XXX Racing Fuel and their involvement with many top racers in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class. I?m so proud that XXX CEO Thomas Goss has added me to their already impressive stable. ?We were also able to take a step back during this autumn break and analyze some major issues we had at the Concord event. The team was determined to find the solution and guess what? Mystery solved! We had a great test session at Union Grove, Wisconsin, with a career best 7.05 ET and 187.42 mph speed. I want to thank my crew Jim Schneider, Rob Schopf, Randy Hobena, Lee Coffey, Randy Crouch and Jerry Cameron for their hard work, dedication and endless friendship. I would also like to welcome business development manager Tony Ruggeri to our team.

?Special thanks also go out to Hal?s Harley-Davidson of New Berlin, Wisconsin, 5-Ball Racing and Bikernet.com, and ?Da Grove Dragway. We have many great memories at Union Grove and would like to thank everyone there for their support.

?As far as Vegas, I?m from the desert out in Scottsdale, Arizona, so I?m really looking forward to racing in a more familiar environment. I also have many great memories from the AHDRA finals at The Strip and can?t wait to get back to that great facility. With these new sponsorships, I think it will be the perfect time for me to qualify for my first NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle field. Thank you to them for becoming a part of our racing world, and we are looking forward to a beautiful future together.?
